There’s such a great energy that comes back to Jakarta after Ramadhan and Lebaran have past. You can see it in the faces of the people as they start to pick up pace moving into another year re-charged and ready to go, which isn’t surprising after having to lay low for a couple of months more or less. Bars and restaurants were packed during the last couple of weekends and it’s sure to go on unabated now for the next few months until before you know it, we’re back to Ramadhan again. Phew, live it up while you can folks. There are plenty of events coming our way soon too and the number one to watch out for is the Java Soulnation held at Istora Senayan over the weekend from September 28. There is a great line-up of international acts and can’t be missed. Also that same Friday night, Keane will be live at Tennis Indoor Senayan - a little bit of competition you could say. Brandals are back at Hard Rock Café while the blues grabs hold of Illigals with a visit from Gugun Blues Shelter on Sept 26. It’s great to be back and thanks to those who came along and supported the Beat events last week, which you can read all about inside, and we’ll be doing that again soon. Keep yourself posted right here at the beat magazine for all the info you need to get yourself around this stormsome town. There’s plenty more to read about inside to and if you have any comments please direct them to editor@ beatmag.com and we’ll get right back to you.

Big Bang Alive Tour 2012 The boyband fever is still quite hyped up in prepubescent Indonesia, and they love the South Korean boyband named Big Bang. Big Bang was formed in 2006 and consists of G-Dragon, TOP, Taeyang, Daesung, and Seungri. Arguably, they created their own hallmark; in fact they have been named as a “Revolutionary Group of Hallyu Wave” for their unique music and fashion style. Many achievements have been awarded to them, including the Most Favorite Korean Artist. Big Bang will visit Jakarta in their world tour schedule and hold a concert on October 12 & 13 at Mata Elang International Stadium, Ancol. If you claim yourself as a V.I.P., you won’t miss a single moment of the concert.

Is the array of upcoming shopping opportunities near Mega Kuningan a good thing? ver been shopping at Singapore’s Orchard Road? Many of the older malls there are currently being refurbished so parts of it look a bit like a building site at present. Generally speaking, though, the walk between Orchard and Dhoby Ghaut MRT (subway) stations is quite pleasant, sidewalk cafes are welcome pitstops, trees provide shade from the tropical

sun and plenty of pedestrian crossings make it easy and safe to go from one side of the road to the other. Jakarta’s Jalan Dr Satrio/Casablanca shopping area has been touted as the Indonesian capital’s version-to-be of Orchard Road. Guffaws apart, let’s put to one side that it’s even more of a building site at the moment due to construction of an overpass along its entire length. Three large, new, shopping complexes along the road have either just opened up or are about to do so: Kuningan City, Kota Kasablanka and Ciputra World. Their names are quite revealing for they indicate that the three venues will be somewhat different to the older malls that exist all over the city, aiming this time to provide more of a total lifestyle experience. They will incorporate some or all of the following: a large supermarket, plenty of clothing and consumer goods stores, cafes and restaurants, entertainment facilities, offices, apartments, a hotel and even an art gallery (at Ciputra World). If you include Mal Ambasador nearby, there will shortly be four major shopping complexes, all on the same road and within two kilometres of each other. Most visitors to Orchard Road usually take the MRT, a bus or walk, and a relatively small proportion drive there or go by taxi. Contrast that with the likely scenario at Satrio/ Casablanca once the new venues are up and running. In the absence of a reliable mass rapid transit system like the MRT, these new, multiuse complexes are likely to generate a huge

amount of car and motor cycle traffic. Once complete, the new overpass should provide additional road capacity but you can imagine how much traffic congestion will still be almost inevitable in the area. Although the offices and residential accommodation at these complexes have the potential to generate high shopper demand, will there be enough buyers in general to support such a huge increase in quality shopping floorspace, including new brand names, in this locality? Perhaps one indication is to take a look at what’s happening just a little to the south in the Sudirman-Senayan corridor, where seven malls also lie within two kilometres of each other: Plaza Senayan (plus Acadia Plaza Senayan), Senayan City, ITC Senayan, fX mall, Pacific Place and Plaza Semanggi. While Plaza Senayan and Pacific Place clearly target the top end of the market, the others largely squabble over what remains. ITC Senayan and fX have rather under-occupied upper floors for venues in this area, and much of the floorspace at ITC is used as small offices rather than retail units. We’ll find out soon enough if the Satrio/ Casablanca area becomes the shoppers’ paradise it has been planned to be. Meanwhile, take advantage of the opening promos (particularly at the cafes and restaurants) as new outlets open up. Just be patient, though, while waiting to get into the car parks.

his trend has actually been emerging since late last year and Hollywood celebrities are getting very comfortable with it. But I haven’t really seen this trend creeping into the street style of the Jakarta fashion scene. I wonder if it’s just a matter of time or is this style just not something for us Jakartans?

I love the style. I don’t think I can pull it off but I like how they lend such an effortless yet luxurious look. They also look comfortable to wear because they kind of resemble slippers, the ones you usually get during a stay at a hotel. Hmmm, no wonder they have an effortless yet fancy vibe.

www.beatmag.com

Some of celebrities who sport it are Olivia Palermo, Taylor Swift and Jennifer Hudson. The way I see it, these loafers look great with pants that hit right or above the ankle. Shorts would be great too as it will give these fancy slippers more of a spotlight. I like how Taylor Swift wears them, she chooses a contrasting color to her pants and leaves the top part neutral, resulting in a chic but still dressy kind of look. www.fashionesedaily.com Style & Beauty with Attitude

For a tasty culinary trip to Japan, you gotta open ‘the gate’!

type of Japanese pilaf cooked with various types of meat, seafood, and vegetables, and flavored with soy sauce, sake, or mirin. By cooking the rice and various ingredients in an iron pot, the rice gets slightly burned at the bottom which adds a certain flavor to the rice.

We began with a serving of the tasty Takoyaki (32k) a ball-shaped snack made of a batter and cooked in a special takoyaki pan, filled with octopus meat. The Takoyaki are doused with a special sauce and mayonnaise, and generously sprinkled with shavings of dried bonito (or katsuobushi), made from dried, fermented, and smoked tuna.

The Taiyaki (25k), fish shaped pancakes filled with red beans and smothered with chocolate sauce, was our choice of dessert. While the Strawberry Mint Tea, the Green Apple Mint Tea, and the Green Tea Smoothie (30k each) were very refreshing.

The restaurant has several types of Kamameshi, but the most popular one is the Unagi The interior at Kado++ is both stylish and Kamameshi (98k) with grilled eel. Simple, yet welcoming. It melds a modern Japanese aesthetic scrumptious. with a cozy lounge vibe. The dining room looks very cozy, with some homey elements such as a Kushiyaki (also called yakitori), is a term that book shelf thrown in for good measure. There’s encompasses both poultry and non-poultry also a lounge area, which is perfect for hanging items, which are skewered and grilled, kind of out with a bunch of friends and getting the “++” like satay. The Mix Moriawase Kushiyaki (95k) treatment. here is a superb platter of Tebasaki/chicken wing, gyu karubi/beef belly, ninniku/garlic, ikada/ The skillful Japanese head chef makes sure that green onion, gyutan/beef tongue, momo/chicken authenticity is the key and each plate is artfully leg meat, and salmon. The dish is accompanied presented. The restaurant is a popular place for by a Kyabetsu Miso dip, a delicious mélange of lot of Japanese clients, but the locals are also miso, cabbage, and Japanese chili. The dip takes getting into the Japanese spirit here. the kushiyaki to a whole new level!

Up next, the Row ‘The Salmon’ Boat sushi (60k); a brilliant take on the more traditional salmon sushi. Presented like a boatful of sushi, complete with spoons as ‘oars’, the six-piece sushi come with three different toppings. Highly recommended!

ado is the Japanese word for “gate” and Kado++ is a wonderful restaurant by Kawano International Group, the company behind several successful Japanese ventures in town such as Sakana, Hon Zen, and also Kado (without the ‘++’). Kado++ specializes in Kushiyaki and Kamameshi. We will get into them a bit later.

If you’re looking for a place to lounge after work, the bar at Kado++ offers a diverse selection of sake infused cocktails. We highly recommend the Sake-tini (50k); a nice blend of Nomo Nomo sake, Martini Bianco, Lime, and sugar. The Red or Dead (85k) is another favorite here; a mix of tequila, lime, grenadine, syrup, and arak Bali. The arak can also be substituted with a Korean sake brand called Chum Churum.

The old adage “good things come in small packages” is certainly true with this tiny taqueria.

www.beatmag.com

ocated in the new hipster hangout zone of Jalan Panglima Polim V, South Jakarta, a new restaurant is making the right kind of buzz lately. Mexican eateries are few and far between in Jakarta, and a recent Mexican food craze in Melbourne kind of triggered Taco Local’s owners Sebastian Subakti and Dito Kartowisastro to open up a taqueria for the masses. Sebastian’s experience in Texas is also a big plus in bringing such flavors to Jakarta. Taco Local serves some of the Mexican favorites that diners crave. There are tasty tacos (well, duh…), hefty burritos, nachos, etc. But what’s most impressive about this place is that each ingredient such as the tortilla shell, refried beans, guacamole, salsa fresca (also called pico de gallo), and even the hot sauce is prepared

fresh daily! Some newcomers may even have a tough time deciding what to eat from the menu. And Taco Local offers plenty of house specialties that keep hungry customers coming back for more. The interior is decidedly simple. No colorful piñata or oversized sombrero here; just a basic brick wall and wooden furniture, accented with some quirky wall hangings; check out the huge board of the restaurant’s tempting Weekend Specials! The cozy patio is also a main draw for diners, especially in the evenings. On a rare slow weekday I took my dear friend Clarissa there recently. We brought our big lunch appetites and were not disappointed. We started by sharing the Nachos El Local (50k) -

For an added kick, we added some home made chipotle and jalapeño sauces (4k each). These delectable hot and tangy dips will make your taste buds tingle with excitement.

The Taco Pollo Comino (28k single/52k double) - Cumin chicken, refried beans, salsa fresca, and guacamole, and Taco Elote (26k single/48k double) - Chipotle corn, refried beans, salsa fresca, salsa verde, and pimento asada continued our Mexican culinary journey. Another worthy note of mention, the custom made paper containers for the food add a nice touch; a real local taqueria feel.

Speaking of the weekend specials, Clarissa and I are already planning to visit Taco Local on the weekend. Some Torta (Mexican sandwich) with Lengua (grilled beef tongue), Taco with Menudo (beef intestines), a spiced milk drink? Hey, maybe we’ll see you there! This small restaurant is certainly making a big noise in Jakarta’s culinary scene. (Budi Iskandar)

As for beverages, the Yogyakarta-made bottled sarsaparilla drink called Saparella (15k) is popular here, so are the Margarita and Piña Colada Sorbets (20k each). But our favorite has got to be the Coriander Margarita (45k); a cool twist of the old Mexican favorite. This is something that you just have to try!

037

f o o d

Tortilla chips smothered with cheese, refried beans, guacamole, and salsa fresca, and some Quesadillas Elote (32k) - Chipotle corn, salsa fresca, coriander, and cheese stuffed in a toasted and flattened home made soft flour tortilla. We knew we were on a tasty trip to Mexico that day! The home made tacos here really are a revelation. Clarissa loved her Taco Al Pastor (30k single/56k double). It’s an incredibly tender take on grilled pork shoulder, with pickled cabbage, salsa fresca, salsa verde, and also grilled pineapple for a bit of zing.

From Classicism to Impressionism By Erza S.T.

Over a decade after that, the European classical music movement changed again into a new direction called impressionism. Renowned mainly in France, this movement appeared in the late 19th century and continued into the beginning of 20th century. Musical impressionism focuses on a suggestion and an atmosphere rather than a strong emotion or a depiction of a story as in program music. It occurred as a reaction to the excesses of the romantic era. The earlier era was characterized by a dramatic use of the major and minor scale systems while impressionist music tended to make more use of dissonance. This was the era where many nocturnes, arabesques and preludes were created. Indonesian and international musicians will give tribute to these fantastic eras by performing compositions from that time. Duo Greco-Bonucci from Italy for example, is coming to Jakarta under the patronage of the Embassy of Italy and will perform some great music from the classicism era. Corrado Grego on pianoforte and Rodolfo Bonucci on violin are two award-winning musicians who will present you with great program of Italian composers such as Tommaso Vitali, Cesar Franck, Goffredo Petrassi, Luigi Dallapiccola and Maurice Ravel in their upcoming concert September 19 at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta.

With such a fun selection to choose from, it would be a total loss to miss any of these performances. So let’s mark your calendar now! Concert Duo Greco-Bonucci 19 September 2012 starting from 20.00 onwards GedungKesenian Jakarta For more information: +6221-392 7531/2 or +6221-344 1892

Classicism was started in Europe in the middle of the 18th century where most people began to move toward a new style in architecture, literature and the arts which sought to emulate the ideals of classical antiquity and especially those of classical Greece. In this era, classical music has a lighter and clearer texture than Baroque music and is less complex too. Melodies tended to be shorter than those of Baroque music, with clear-cut phrases and clearly marked cadences. The orchestra also increased in size and range and the harpsichord was replaced by the piano.

Aside from this fascinating duo, we will also have another performance by the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra and the Reformed Oratorio Society from Singapore, who will also be showcasing music from the classicism to impressionism. Famous pieces such as Rossini’s William Tell Overture, Ravel’s Pavane Pour UneInfante Defunte and Debussy’s everlasting Clair De Lune are some of what they will performed at Aula Simfonia Jakarta on September 29.

fter the long holiday, now it is time to fill our lives with some great classical music again. Welcoming autumn, Jakarta has so much to offer in terms of classical music shows. Ride a Fixie with a Teddy Bear to Kill Zombies?

By: @JohanJT

Begitulah kalimat tak masuk akal dan bahkan imajinasimu jika kita coba menggabungkan objek sorotan dari ketiga film berikut. Tapi kamu langsung penasaran bukan? If you were a character in a movie, try to imagine a scene just like the odd title above! Definitely doesn’t make any sense, but that’s what a movie is sometimes – illogical. And again, if you care too much on logical sense of a movie’s story, you must be too serious. Having an alive-and-talking Teddy bear as your soulmate? Possible to survive a whole world of ferocious zombies with only a team? Can you ride a bicycle so fearless and fast to escape chasing cars? Why not at www.blitzmegaplex.com and www.21cineplex.com?

Ted Comedy, Fantasy. Writer & Director: Seth MacFarlane. Writers: Alec Sulkin. Wellesley Wild. Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel McHale. From the director and writing team of the hilariously well-known “Family Guy” series, Seth MacFarlane brings his boundary-pushing sense of humor to the big screen with a live CGIanimated talking Teddy Bear. It’s a story with a ton of funny scenes and a dose of good drama about friendship and love. Put up your expectations, bring along your own teddy bear to watch Ted together.

Resident Evil: Retribution Action, Horror, Sci-Fi. Writer & Director: Paul W.S. Anderson. Cast: Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Michelle Rodriguez, Colin Salmon, Kevin Durand, Shawn Roberts.

Starting life as a video game series, the Resident Evil franchise has seen some gratuitously fun films for about a decade. Starting from 2002 with the first one, the sequels were Apocalypse, Extinction, Afterlife and now Retribution. The series follows Milla Jovovich’s character as she constantly battles the evil Umbrella corporation and deadly zombies. Having a rough week? Channel the stress by enjoying a very sexy protagonist battle evil companies and zombies for some brainless fun.

Premium Rush Action, Thriller. Director: David Koepp. Writers: David Koepp, John Kamps. Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Shannon, Dania Ramirez, Jamie Chung, Lauren Ashley Carter. From an interesting premise about an agile and fearless bike messenger in hectic New York City, Premium Rush captures the thrilling and gripping chase scenes of Wilee (Joseph GordonLevitt) who receives a mysterious envolope that appears to put his life at edge and must escape the police, FBI and bad guys’ cars trying to grab hold of the package. If you’re hoping for a good adrenaline rush, then this film is the right fit for you. Munch on popcorn and sip on soda because our hero will be doing enough exercise for all of us.

Another member, Donny, who is a graduate

What music are you into at the moment? Mostly rock and metal. I’m kind of stuck with 60s to 90s music hehe… I don’t really follow current music trends. Plus I’m not really listening to the radio or watching TV anymore. It has become less and less interesting for me. They all sound and look the same. So artificial as well. So here I am, happily stuck with Zeppelin, Sabbath, Crimson, Motörhead, Clash, Maiden, Tool, FNM, Anthrax, Megadeth… Well, if I really have to mention a new group from the rock/metal scene, I would say Meshuggah. Some indie stuff is interesting too. I continuously check www.yesnowave.com for new stuff. What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? Seventh Son of a Seventh Son by Iron Maiden! At exactly the same time I got my first ever radio-tape player/recorder. It was total double excitement! Before that, I used to sneak into my brother’s room to listen to music and surrender myself to The Beatles, CCR, Queen, Stones and

the Police. Which I didn’t really mind but they didn’t really express who I was at the time. So when I had my own tape player, I had my complete freedom to crank up stuff that I was really into. What is/are your all-time favorite album/s? Why? Ænima by Tool. It’s a very intense album. Experimental and conceptual at the same time. Lots of anger but simultaneously thought-provoking and poetic lyrics towards the corporate-state, beliefs, and values in the contemporary society. It’s also a fatalistic album where Maynard James Keenan prays for a tidal wave, all the destructible things in the world should be flushed. The album also presents speed and rhythm that is constantly changing, challenging, yet integrating. Other than experimenting with soundscape, this 1996released piece also features industrial-rock groove “Die Eier von Satan” which features a speech in German complete with a synchronously

What was the worst record you ever purchased? Hmm… I don’t think I have any. I guess because I’m pretty picky when it comes to buying records. I always did comprehensive research before purchasing records. Even though the album didn’t meet my expectations in the end, I’ll collect it and archive it. Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? To be a successful entrepreneur. If possible to become the fifth richest man in Indonesia. I guess I could do a lot with all the money I had— much better than what I am able to do today. To build a Spending Spree Foundation isn’t a bad idea, is it? What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Materialisme Dialektis: Kajian tentang Marxisme dan Filsafat Kontemporer by Martin Suryajaya. Martin is a brilliant and promising young thinker. Not only he once again explores the strand of

Marxism called Dialectical Materialism, he also criticises post-modern philosophies these last few decades. Can I add one more? Other than that too-serious book, at the moment I’m also reading the comic version of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. What new movie should people see? Why? Prometheus by Ridley Scott. This the prequel of the horror sci-fi Alien but Scott adds his own idea about the origins of mankind on earth, the pursuit of God existence (God a.k.a. the creator in this movie is called the engineer—such a technical term). This movie challenges the concept of God and creation. And of course the extraordinary, big-budget, special effects which are mainly based on H.R. Giger design.

militaristic hand clap. You could feel a fascistic atmosphere there! But in fact there’s nothing fascistic about it. The contents of the speech are about a hashish cake hehe... This album also includes a sample of jokes from my favourite stand up comedian, Bill Hicks, in “Third Eye”. Not to mention this album gives you a bonus, a surreal videoclip for “Stinkfist”. It’s one of my all-time favourite videoclips. Everything in this album is inspirational for me.

What song do you choose to start your weekend? “The Pot” by Tool. And song you choose to end your weekend? “Cuckoo for Caca” by FNM. The speed and the shout, perfect combination to start weekdays. Check out the lyrics so you understand what I’m talking about: ...Being good gets you stuff Being stuff gets you good Good stuff gets you being And wheelin’ and dealin’ and squealin’ Shit lives forever…

Summer White Party

Resident DJ Ruffie and Ricky Chataway got the white party going with pumping house music with the help of a number of body painted dancers. A few more white garbed punters on the ground coulda been handy but good party in any case.

he focus of the Beat Down party presented by The Beat Jakarta at Otel Lobby last weekend was on the fashion show presented by the birthday girl, Tutus Kurniati and her celebrity Jakarta friends sashaying elegantly down the red catwalk in a collection of Italian summer inspired kebayas. With drinks from the sponsors Ciroc Vodka (somewhere), a few snacks and tunes from Mikey Moran and later Jeremy Jay, Otel Lobby proved to be quite the spot for fun, games and pre-clubbing drinks. And where’s the next Beat Down or Beat Up Party you may ask? Good question, we’ll let you know soon.

Boshe elements

T

he Elements party in Boshe was built around a collaborative performance from two of the hottest local DJs from Jakarta, Anza March and Dizzi. The night was opened around 10pm by DJ Dee who performed his set in front of an already excited crowd. The top billings then came on right after that to supply the beats for the famous Boshe sexy models show. Anza March and Dizzi kept the tempo high with their back to back performances that only got the party crazier through the night. People started to climb on to the stage to dance until closing time in the early morning hours.
