SUMMER ISSUE

ISSUE 7 Summer I
t seems as the end of the year approaches the seasons come around faster and faster.
It feels like just last week we were putting out the spring issue and now here we are ready for a new season and another issue of The Beauty Bible. Fitting in with the season, we went for a nautical inspired cover shoot. Shooting a summer cover in the up and down spring weather can certainly have its challenges but the end result was definitely worth it. In this issue we not only have our usual dose of beauty goodness, but we have a large focus on mental health. We chatted to the mental health foundation to gain some insight into how it affects us as New Zealanders, and worked with some influencers in the beauty community to shed some light on the topic and remind us all that we are not alone. As always, I hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed creating it.

SALON STYLE HAIR AT BOSTON How long have you been hairdressing for? I’ve been hairdressing for 6 years, including training. Was owning a salon always a dream if yours? YES! I was always on Pinterest looking up salons that inspired me, hoping one day or have my own! When did you know it was the right time to take the leap and open Hair At Boston? To be honest, at the start I wasn’t, I was in a salon I loved working at and Hair at Boston kinda just happened and I haven’t looked back. What does a day in your life look like? I usually hit the gym in the morning before work as I work 12 hour days so I don’t get a lot of down time, after work I love coming home to my man and snuggling up on the couch watching our fave shows with a glass of red. Describe your personal style I’m quite girly, I love my dresses and bright colours, but also live in my leather jacket and mom jeans! What hair trends have you noticed leading up to summer? Bright, creamy, lived in blondes! The ‘grown out’ look is super seamless and beautiful, it’s easy to maintain & definitely most popular. If you could give someone wanting to start a business one piece of advice what would it be?
JESSY LEONARD - OWNER HAIR AT BOSTON
Don’t be afraid to ask for help! My partner and I own the salon together and it does get stressful and hard, but it is the most rewarding feeling at the end!

HOW TO MASTER THE SUMMER GLOW
With Michael Finch Michael Finch’s massive combined following of over 1.5 million people easily places him in the top 25 male beauty influencers in the world. We chatted with him about all things beauty, Youtube, and how to master the perfect summer tan with the new Bondi Sands GLO wash off tan.
What’s a typical day like, for you? Wake up, eat, emails, film, edit, check all my social media accounts, sleep. Repeat. That’s literally me every day when I don’t have somewhere to be!
Which of the Bondi Sands range is your favourite product? That’s hard! I’m stuck between the One Hour Express and the new GLO One Day Tan in Matte.
What’s the best thing about your job?
Best tip for self-tanning?
The best thing about my job? Being able to inspire others, help others be themselves and help get them through tough times. The number of people I get reaching out to me thanking me for making them smile is truly amazing.
MOISTURISER AND EXFOLIATION ARE KEY!
If I can make someone’s day, make someone smile, my work is done! Also the fact that I am my own boss! I’ve always had a problem with authority (don’t we all!) but it’s great being able to make your own schedule and do things when you want to do them!
Can you use self-tan to contour? Yes! 100%! I tend to use the GLO One Day Tan in Matte on my face and use it as contour/foundation when I’m on the run and am in a rush! It works a treat with a beauty blender and acts just like Foundation.
How much is too much? The limit does not exist! What’s the best application method? Exfoliate the DAY BEFORE so your pores have a chance to close up and don’t clog. Apply tan/GLO the day after and make sure you use moisturiser on your elbows, knees and most importantly, your hands and fingers! Get in the little cracks and crevices! What’s on your self-tanning session playlist? Anything house! I like to listen to Cardi B when I’m tanning/ getting ready to go out! Can you tell us about the new GLO range? The new GLO range is literally amazing, you have three different options, matte, shimmer or gloss! You can apply matte, then some shimmer and then some gloss if you want an all in one effect. I really like it because it doesn’t transfer or when you sweat it doesn’t move! What do you love most about these products? The fact that they don’t transfer or rub off like the majority of other tans. Why did you originally decide to partner with Bondi Sands? Bondi Sands was the first self-tanner I ever used and was told about. When the team reached out to work with me I was honestly gobsmacked. It’s so important to work with brands you truly love and even more importantly ENJOY working with! The Bondi Sands team is hands down one of the best teams I’ve ever worked with and they know how to throw a good partyyyyy! How do you deal with online hate and what advice do you have for young people who are being bullied online? I’ve dealt with hate ever since I was in primary school, so I’m just used to it now, I don’t think about it every day but when you put yourself online for the world to see hate is always expected. As sad as it is, it’s just how it is! What advice do you have for people who want to become YouTubers? I encourage EVERYONE who wants to make a YouTube channel, do it! If I can do it, ANYONE IN THE WORLD CAN! Make sure you do it for the right reasons, I truly have a passion for creating content and teaching others, if you’re in it for the money or ‘fame’ people will pick up on that and you won’t have much of a career on YouTube. What’s next for you? Watch this space ;)

DOLCE AND GABBANA LITE BLUE EAU INTENSE
KAREN WALKER RUNAWAY AZURE EAU DE PARFUM
When the summer months come around time and time again I gravitate to an all- time favourite and constant bestseller– Dolce and Gabbana Lite Blue. This crisp fragrance, which hero’s apple and lemon, was inspired by the Mediterranean and takes you to those beautiful blue waters with every spritz. I prefer the newest version Lite Blue Eau Intense which has a bit more oomph than the original. RRP $81- $155
Karen Walker launched Runaway, her masterpiece fragrance, back in February 2017. An intense woody fragrance inspired by a journey deep into the woods, it conjurs up visions of campfires and crushed pine. ESTEE LAUDER ADVANCED NIGHT REPAIR SERUM
BENEFIT THEY’RE REAL MASCARA
REVLON MATTE LIPSTICK
I love this product. I find that some serums don’t absorb into the skin and tend to leave a (sometimes sticky) film on the skins surface. With ANR, I feel that my skin absorbs it well making it feel soft and really hydrated. I would literally bath in it if I could. RRP $188 (50ml)
I have used this for years and even though I have trialled gazillions of different mascaras I always go back to this one. RRP $46
I’m all about a good matte lip which doesn’t feel dry on my lips and lasts while still giving great colour. Revlon have just launched a matte in their Super Lustrous range in 10 gorgeous shades (I have 3 of them with my favourite being Show Stopper) which literally glides onto your lips with a gorgeous velvety feel. STYLE FILES WITH SAND & SCARF It is the most versatile of the accessory family, and is quickly becoming this seasons must have closet staple - the decorative scarf. We chatted with Morgaine Halligan boss babe and founder of NZ scarf boutique Sand & Scarf about her epic business and scarf styling tips. How did the idea for Sand & Scarf come about? About a year ago I become obsessed with silk scarves. There was an accessories shop in my local mall that sold so many different styles and they were very affordable! As you can probably tell, silk scarves have come back into trend and they are now sold on majority of online fashion stores. I loved wearing them as tops and hanging them from my bag. One day I randomly had the idea to start a website selling them because I couldn’t find any online stores that just sold silk scarves in a way that was marketed to the “Instagram” world! I remember rushing to my mums house to tell her my idea and we tried to come up with a name for it for weeks. I finally settled on Sand & Scarf and fell in love with the whole project! I made the website myself, created all of the content, sourced the scarves and handed them around to family and friends to see how they liked them. I started an Instagram page for S&S, set a launch date and in April, my baby launched. It has brought me so much happiness and I am so incredibly grateful for everyone who has and continues to be apart of the journey! What does a day in your life look like? A day in my life is very hectic! I currently have a full time admin job which is hella stressful, in my breaks and after work I pack scarf orders and quickly pop round to the post office to send them! I am always on the go and have to remind myself to slow down otherwise everything gets too crazy. I think I love the challenge of trying to balance everything. At night all I want to do is lie in bed and watch Netflix because I’m so exhausted!

.
What inspires you to come up with new designs/products? I’m always trying to follow the trends and keep it fresh. I really want to keep coming out with new styles on the website to keep people interested and grow the collection! I am always watching what other brands are coming out with. Also, influencers/fashion bloggers on Instagram inspire me to source new scarf styles to stay relevant. Who is your fashion icon? My fashion icon would have to be Steph Smith. She always has the most gorgeous outfits when she gets dressed up for events! I am also, like many others, obsessed with Kendall Jenner & Bella Hadid. What is your favorite thing about owning your own business? The love and support that comes with it. When people support your business and are excited about your product just as much as you are, it inspires you to keep grinding! Any future plans for Sand & Scarf? That’s a secret! I am always thinking ahead. What advice would you give to someone wanting to create their own brand/business? Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, you learn from them! As Sophia Amoruso (Founder of Nasty Gal) says - “There are secret opportunities hidden inside every failure”. It is also improtant to let people in if you feel you need help. I have always wanted to do everything on my own and I’ve found that sometimes you just need a helping hand whether it be from a professional, a family member or a friend! Oh and of course, if you have an idea and are passionate about it, run with it and don’t look back!

NOT ALONE Mental health issues affect 1 in every 5 New Zealanders. Recently, mental health awareness has become a large topic of discussion and general conversation in the hope that anyone living with a mental illness should never have to feel alone. According to Mental Health New Zealand CE Shaun Robinson “When we have good mental health, we are better able to cope with the ups and downs of daily life. It is important that we can all have open, honest and authentic conversations about mental health so that people are better equipped to look after their own wellbeing, and that they feel confident to be able to support friends, whānau and colleagues who may be going through tough times.” Over the last 30 years the awareness and response to mental health has improved significantly with public awareness campaigns making it more acceptable for New Zealanders to talk about mental health problems and to seek help. However there is always more that can be done to reduce the stigma that surrounds it. “The important thing is that people who are experiencing mental distress have good support from friends and whānau. The best thing people can do is to ask a loved one what support they would find most helpful – it’s not about trying to fix someone, but simply being there for them no matter what.” Says Robinson Something as simple as offering to pick up someones groceries, taking their children for an hour, or even just a coffee and a chat can make a major difference to someones week. You are not alone, and you don’t have to go through this on your own. There are people who care and want to help you find a way through. Reach out to friends, whānau or your GP and let them know what’s going on so that they can help you get the support you deserve. If you want to talk to a trained counsellor you can call or text 1737 at any time.

ASH OWENS I have always spoken about my struggle with anxiety openly on my blog and on Instagram because I knew as someone who struggled, it helped knowing that there were others out there who were struggling too. The reality for me is that it’s not just crippling anxiety that puts my stomach into knots for hours and stops me from being able to function throughout my day for no apparent reason, it’s the odd panic attack, chronic nightmares, nightly teeth grinding and weekly sleep paralysis. It’s hard, but every year I am learning to cope with it better as I am constantly looking for ways to manage it. If you have a friend or a partner who struggles with their mental health, look out for them. Make an effort to empathize, send them a message when you’re thinking of them, make sure they know that you can talk to them about it because you have absolutely no idea how much of a difference that can make to someone’s day who is drowning in worry or sadness. Think about others, and the world will start to become a better place, and an easier place for people to manage their mental health struggle.
Today is so different. I have overcome this situation. I am so proud of how far I have come. It got to a point where I was sick of my thoughts drowning me out literally to the point of no return.
ASHLEY ALLEN Mental health can effect people on so many levels. I have certainly had my fair share of battles with Mental Health. I have been fortunate enough to have my incredible Mother. She shed light in my life, when I only saw darkness and no way out.

I made a choice to get strong and society where I can.... even if it is only one take my power back. I am mentally strong small step at a time. in who I am and that situation no longer controls my outlook on life. I am a strong The rise in mental health absolutely breaks and confident women. However getting my heart, after loosing a few friends to here was not an easy road. I learnt the true suicide I have become super passionate meaning of forgiveness. Forgiving him was about fighting for everyones right to stay a process but I was not going to allow him here on this earth and to make sure they steal from my future anymore. live their life to it’s absolute fullest. No one should ever feel alone, no one should ever My mum says it best - you can either be feel like they aren’t good enough and no powerful or pitiful. one should ever feel that the world is a better place without them, because that couldn’t be further from the truth. As fellow human beings we all need to step our game up, actually check in with our friends and family, apologise when we screw up, be supportive when someone needs us and actually take the time to be still and listen. We all get so caught up in our own lives that half the time we don’t even notice the signs of those around us who may be struggling.
When I was nine years old I was sexually abused by my next door neighbours father. This situation traumatised me. Not initially, as I didn’t understand the entirety of the situation at that age. No child should ever have to go through that. When I was In high school I suffered with depression. It became so bad that at one point suicide seemed like the only way out. I am so grateful I had my mother to confide in. My mums home was broken in to when I was ten months old, she was attacked and raped. Opening up about her own experience saved me. I finally had someone that understood me. I would have flashbacks. All of this made me feel dirty and unclean. My innocence was literally stripped away. This situation left me in such a mess. There I was at 1314 dealing with things I should not have to. My self esteem and confidence were destroyed.
STACEY BANFIELD Mental Health is something I think isn’t talked about enough, especially online. These days there’s a real stigma around talking about things that make you appear I guess “less than perfect”. Instagram in particular has become quite toxic in the last couple of years, and even though it is apart of my job most days I actually despise the unrealistic expectations people are sending to their audience. Perfectly curated lives, with no real value
This extreme desire for social approval is honestly one silent bastard that is the root of alot of issues at the moment, people base their lives around follower counts and like numbers that they forget whats actually going on outside of their instagram feed . The reality is you can be “known” online but no one will stand up at your funeral and say “oh yeah her selfies changed my life”. But people will talk about how you made them feel and what you did for them in their time of need. Remember mental health doesn’t discriminate, it effects each and every one of us at some point in our lives, even those who appear to have their life together. So it’s time to stop sweeping the chat under the rug and normalise it so no one ever feels alone. We are all in this together and being a good human is all it takes to truly change a life.
FINDING YOUR MOTIVATION
with Abbey Jessop
We all know that one of the hardest things about living a healthy lifestyle is self-control & motivation. We chatted with Personal Trainer Abbey Jessop to find out her top tips for staying on track.
34
.
How do you manage to stay motivated all year around? It’s really important to have big goals with little “stepping stone goals” in place. This has helped me immensely with “motivation”. Find a goal that that you indefinitely desire to achieve! Then work backwards and think about what you have to do in order to achieve that. Those “steps” to achieving your big goal are what I call the “stepping stone goals”. By having small goals to work through, it creates a sense of achievement, that you’re constantly moving forwards and paving the path that you desire. That has truely been the biggest contributor for myself and keeping motivated! What is your favourite summer activity? Ohh this is such a hard one!! Definitely being in the outdoors with my friends either on the boat wake boarding, paddle boarding, tramping, kayaking ..They are just all so great! there’s nothing like being wrapped in the beautiful New Zealand outdoors, soaking up some glorious sunshine and sharing the whole experience with some awesome company! What is your drink of choice for a night out? So if I’m being healthy Abbey (90% of the time) Then it’s a Vodka with soda water and fresh lime! OR if i’m being the “10% Moderation Abbey” Then I cannot say no to a good rum with Coke Zero! (Kraken Rum is my ultimate faaaaav!) What is your ultimate cheat meal? Oh noooow you’re talking gal! I’m definitely a massive sweet tooth, it’s a well known fact that Abbey goes ham on the treat meals! Haha. Because I’m gluten intolerant, I love to stop by RAW cafes and get a really good RAW slice! A good blondie, brownie, coconut or caramel Gluten free slice has my name all over it ...not to mention bliss balls ...homemade bliss balls are my guilty weakness! Haha What are your biggest tips for staying motivated and on top of your healthy eating/training throughout the holidays? Indefinitely GOAL SETTING! I know, a lot of people reading this will probably glaze over it as we’ve heard it all before. Goal setting is something that I knew to do it, but I just kinda ignored for a little while ..and then I wondered why I just felt like I was so stagnant. I felt confused like what did I want to achieve? Nothing seemed like it was going forwards. It goes with the saying “if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!” There is nothing more fulfilling then ticking off a GOAL! For myself I have also set up a little reward scheme. So for example if I achieve a stepping stone goal then my reward might be a treat meal.
In regards to healthy eating and training; consistency is key!! If you fall off track (like we all do), the most important thing to do is re-focus and get back on track as soon as you can. When you let yourself slip out of your regimen, it’s a lot harder to get back into the swing of things and get your mojo back. For example; I know that if I miss a few days of training then it takes me a few training sessions before I can get into my rhythm and really have to push myself through those initial few trainings back. I find eating healthier actually easier surprisingly enough! Because I have been eating healthy for a few years now, I honestly feel like I get a hangover if I have a day of eating processed foods which makes me crave just a good wholesome and healthy meal. But again with the nutrition side of things, it comes down to consistency. The first few weeks are the hardest to develop that new routine, but after those few weeks of eating healthy, you will find the health benefits so darn worth it. I promise you! For myself when I’m eating healthy, I find that I have a lot clearer mind, can think faster, more stable energy and mood levels, better sleep, decrease in boating and not to mention I feel more confident in my appearance too!
