BEHIND THE SCENES
GET THE LOOK
With Hare & Hunter / LeahLovesMakeup THE MAKEUP Step 1. Start with a glowy base and an HD foundation. I used MAC Strobe Cream and Nars Sheer Glow. Step 2. To finish the face I applied Benefit Hoola Bronzer to contour and MAC Soft and Gentle highlighter for a rose gold glow. I also applied MAC Margin blush to add some colour to the face. Step 3. I filled in Rael’s brows with the the Benefit Precisely My Brow Pencil to add some bold definition and make them stand out in photos. I then set them in place with the Benefit Gimme Brow - My two go-to brow products. Step 4. For her eyes I went for a shimmery, glam look using the Tarte Tarlette In Bloom eyeshadow palette. I applied shimmer champagne shades on the lid and soft matte browns into the crease. I decided not to use an eyeliner, instead smoked out her lash line with a dark matte brown for a softer look. I then applied some natural false lashes to finish off the eyes.
THE HAIR Step 1. Start by brushing all knots out and making sure the hair is blow dried smooth with a round brush. Step 2. Using a medium sized GHD, curl the hair starting from the bottom of the nape all in the same direction, I generally curl towards my right. Once you have finished curling the back, move around to the sides, making sure you are still curling in the same direction. Use a curling tong if you prefer.
Step 5. For the lips I went for an understated nude and applied MAC lipliner in Subculture and MAC lipstick in Blankety - my favourite nude combo! Step 6. Apply a setting spray. My current must have is the L’Oréal Infallible.
Step 3. Let the hair cool down before you dress the hair. Starting from the bottom again, go back and use the same sectioning pattern you started with - I use a comb that has the prongs on the end. Lightly spray the hair with a workable hairspray, at the moment my fav spray to work with is Sebastian Shaper Zero Gravity. Brush the curls out until your happy with the shape they are forming, Step 4. Once you have brushed out the curls, lightly sprinkle some texture powder through the top, Davines texture dust is great! Back comb 2-3 sections either side of the part and 2 sections around the crown. Lightly smooth out the teasing through the top. On the right hand side of the part tuck the hair behind the ear, and spray all the fly aways down. Step 5. Lightly mist the hair with a shine spray and if the hair is not prone to holding maybe a light mist of a strong hold hair spray.

LETTER
A
new season and a brand new issue of The Beauty Bible. Spring is my favourite season, I don’t know if it is the satisfying feeling of tossing my coat in the back of the wardrobe or the fact that I turn another year older but spring for me is about fresh beginnings - out with the old and in with the new. In the months following the launch of The Beauty Bible I have been all about new starts and focusing my time and energy on doing what I love. I said goodbye to the office life and now focus on my passions full time. It was something that I had been putting off for a while but I finally took the leap and couldn’t be happier. With more time on my hands to focus on The Beauty Bible we have created another awesome issue showcasing the lastest trends and informative articles from a whole new group of contributors. We have also introduced a new ‘Style’ section following NZ Fashion Week and have concentrated a lot of energy on our Inner Beauty section. One of the articles in this section talks about L’Oréal’s annual Citizen Day. I was lucky enough to be invited down to the Coromandel with the L’Oréal team to partake in giving back to the community. It was an incredible experience, you can read about it on page 24. We also had an epic photo shoot day for this issue with a whole bunch of talented people coming together at Smith Studios to create not only a stunning cover but some awesome shots for inside the magazine. It was certainly a step up from our last cover which we shot in the model’s garage - You have to start somewhere right? I am beyond excited to see how The Beauty Bible grows and I appreciate all of the support from our readers and contributors on our last issue and on this one.

IN OUR BEAUTY BAGS With ZM’s Megan & PJ PJ What products do you use to keep your skin in check? I love to experiment with products and am in a particularly experimental phase at the moment! I use a Bare Minerals oil cleanser every morning and night, or a Tailor skincare oil cleanse. I mix it up with an exfoliating cleanser as well, one I love is a Omorovicza refining facial polisher. What is your biggest beauty splurge? Facials for sure. I go to my dear friend Romy Burgess at Beauty Elixir for facials and admittedly you do spend a bit of money but I find it so worthwhile and relaxing! My skin and soul always love me for it afterwards. If you had to cut your make up bag down to only 3 products, what would make the cut? Mascara, Coola tinted moisturiser and bronzer
MEGAN What products do you use to keep your skin in check? I use a lot of natural oils from Le’Esscience on my face. A lot of people are scared to use oils on their skin, but I love them. What is your best beauty bargain buy? I often buy like $6 eyeliner from the supermarket. I smudge them and blend them with my eyeshadow anyway, so I don’t need an expensive smudge proof one. What is your biggest beauty splurge? My foundation is the most expensive thing in my make up bag. I use Elizabeth Arden Prevage. It’ $110 for 30ml, but it’s anti-ageing and has SPF30 sunscreen in it. It is important to me that my foundation has a good sunscreen in it. If you had to cut your make up bag down to only 3 products, what would make the cut? My fav Roller Lash Mascara from Benefit, my contour from The Balm, and probably my foundation. Then my skin will look on point, and you don’t need a whole lot of eye makeup if you have a decent mascara. What’s the beauty appointment that you look forward to the most? I enjoy getting facials and microdermabrasion. I used to get lots of bumbs and blemishes under the skin, since getting microderm it’s evened out my skin tone heaps, and plus it’s nice to just lie there and be pampered!
When applying make up, what part of the face do you spend the most amount of time on? Probably my skin and by that I mean hydrating it underneath as well. If my skin is glowing, I feel way more confident! Finish the sentence: my hair would be a mess without... Washing it enough... Probably my worst habit, washing it too much... I do love Pureology shampoo though. The minty one is mint! (excuse the pun).

SKIN SAVIOURS With Stacey Banfield It always seems to be when you have something that you’re looking forward to, your skin decides to sabotage you and have a wee breakdown. This is totally not ideal and so typical, but I finally think after all my years in the beauty industry I may have found a few products and things you can do to try and help prevent stress break outs from happening.
polished. This also means any makeup you are going to be wearing will apply not only alot easier, but it will leave you with a more flawless looking finish. If you are wanting to prep your skin for an event such as a wedding, I would also recommend having microdermabrasion and facial treatments 6 months prior to the day.
The first step I advise to all my brides to be and anyone who has a special event coming up, is to drink LOTS of water in the month or so leading up to it. Obviously we don’t always get that much notice, but water is the best way to keep your skin hydrated and bright from the inside out, plus it won’t cost you a cent - even better!
When it comes to cleansers, it’s all about finding the right one for your specific concerns. I personally love the Clearing Skin Wash by Dermalogica out of all the cleansers I have tried over the years. The salicylic acid helps with congestion, and the beta hydroxy acid helps to stimulate natural exfoliation which in turn helps to prevent future breakout activity.
Alongside drinking lots of water, and trying to not touch your face with your hands, it’s also best to keep the sugary drinks to a minimum. Sugar and stress are a bad combination, and are enough to really make those little bumps under the skin rear their heads, especially when you would prefer they didn’t.
Aside from using good skincare, there are many other affordable products that are fantastic quick fixes, when it comes to blemishes. My favourite one that I find works the best when it comes to a spot treatment, is the Mario Badescu drying l otion. This is hands down one of my holy grail products that I suggest to everyone! Available from Mecca Maxima and only $26, it really is magic!
However when it comes to skincare, exfoliating and cleansing are key to really clearing out the skin from deep within. It can be expensive, and you may not require a whole new routine but they are two steps that I think are super important alongside moisturising. I absolutely love using the Dermalogica Microfoliant, this is great for all skin types and isn’t drying or harsh like some exfoliants can be. Exfoliating is an important step as it helps to remove impurities, and flakiness and will leave your skin feeling beautifully
I apply a small amount at night time, with a cotton tip if i feel a bump coming up under the skin. Literally by the morning it has already dried it out, and by day 2 after treatment, the impurity has disappeared completely. So there you have it, a few tips that really will make a world of difference when it comes to maintaining healthy clear skin.

STEP 1
Prep
On days when I don’t have much time I like to use a tinted moisturiser. I love the Bobbi Brown SPF 15 Tinted Moisturiser. You only need a pea sized amount of product as a little goes a long way. Dot the product onto your cheeks, forehead, chin and nose and blend in with your fingers or a foundation brush.
STEP 2
Conceal
Even when I am doing the most natural makeup I can’t leave the house without concealer. I have really dark under eyes so concealer is a must. I apply the Maybelline Master Concealer under my eyes making sure to tap it in not wipe the product.
STEP 3
Brows
Brows are always a must! I am currently using the Collection Cosmetics Brow kit and its a really inexpensive products that gives great results. To get natural results follow the natural angle of your brows and just fill in gaps.
STEP 4
Eyes
I like to leave my eyes pretty bare however mascara is life so I always apply mascara. I am currently loving the Loreal Telescopic Mascara. It gives you really long thick lashes without the clumps.
STEP 5
Lips
To finish my look I just apply a natural lippy and my current go-to is the NYX Soft Matte Cream in Buenos Aires. It gives a nice glossy look but its not too sticky.

BLAC TO BASICS The harsh truth about parabens Ever wondered what is really in our makeup products? After discovering the devastating effects of parabens Blac Cosmetics founders Mary Estelle and Krystal Hayward set out to create a more ethical and safe makeup brand. Where did the idea for Blac come from? We both wanted to bring a range to the market that was not only cruelty free but also paraben free so after a couple of years of research and tossing ideas between us we came up with Blać cosmetics, we wanted products that we would use in our kits on all of our clients and that they would feel comfortable using at home . How has the brand grown since you started We started as a online store and are now in several salons around NZ ranging from hair salons, skin clinics and clothing boutiques. We are also the official make up sponsor for the Adam & Eve show on TV 2. They recently did an interview with Famous Beauty Vlogger Patrick Starr, who used our highlighters on camera. Why do you think it is important to use paraben free products? Parabens are known to mimic oestrogen. It is made of the same cell formation. As it is absorbed into our biggest organ, the skin, it messes with our hormones and immune system and has been linked with breast cancers, endometriosis and ovarian cysts. Using parabens everyday is like using bad medicine. It is a preservative. We will be also releasing a Organic range in the near future to really work on the health of our skin, we are still in the process of perfecting so watch this space.
What do you see for the future of Blac Cosmetics We would love to have a flagship store , a place where our clients can come and be made up and experience our products to the fullest. What are your favorite products from the range Well that’s hard one because we love everything in our range! We test all of our products on our clients and ourselves for 3 at least months before we release so we make sure they last the distance and are top quality! But our all time fave is our golden glow highlighter! We also love the tinted moisturizer as it offers a decent but natural coverage all while protecting you from the sun Where can people buy Blac Cosmetics We have a online store and we are available on mym.co.nz, but if your wanting to try the product before hand you can pop in to one of our lovely stockists!! We are still hunting for the perfect fit to Stock us in the major cities around NZ and Aus. PAINTED INSPIRATION
By Courtney Devereux Fashion designer Trelise Cooper’s newest season has featured designs sourced from an unusual source of inspiration – a popular autistic painter. The high-fashion gowns feature designs from the top emerging Chinese painter, who was diagnosed with Autism at age three, and his incredible works of art. Cooper, who shares a long time personal relationship with the artist known as BCY (Bi Changyu), is known for her glamorous clothing line and unique collections – and these creations are no exception to the rule. Select proceeds from the show, which was held at Cooper’s Summer Theatre of Fashion 2017, went to the Children with Autism Foundation. The four-day event remains as popular as Cooper’s designs, filling Q Theatre with fashion pursuers of all different ages and personal style. Collaborating with one of New Zealand’s top designers is an opportunity that has in no way been handed to the artist, who has worked on previous projects with the designer in the past. The gowns, which range from light floral numbers to erethral floor length gowns, blur the lines between fashion and art - as the dresses seen on the runway are a mixture of each. Designs within the collection have been created in a way that appeals to both fashion and art enthusiasts alike, with a range of stylistic colour pairings and subtle prints that draw in the eye with every step.
Many fashion houses have long incorporated fashion into art, and art into their pieces. In 1974 Yves Saint Laurent partnered with Andy Warhol, in 2012 internationally renowned footwear designer, Jimmy Choo, collaborated with contemporary artist, Rob Pruitt, to create a capsule collection, adding to the ongoing trend that that fashion appropriates art. This is not Cooper’s first instance of combining her eye for fine art within her designs. Cooper’s Curate 2017 Spring collection featured items based on classic art pieces as well as more BCY inspired prints. The Theatre of Fashion, which runs for four nights in the late of June, shows the latest Summer collection by the designer. A collaboration of brands which ensures Coopers message is translated into the show and its success. Several gowns were based on BCY’s work, with one singular model showcasing the dress at a time, demanding the full attention of the audience from the floor to the heavens. Coopers energetic and bold collections have become common place on her runways, but the inspiration by BCY’s collection is a collaboration that brings something more into the spotlight.

STAPLE SESSIONS HOW TO WEAR:
With Serendipity Ave
THE BLACK SLIP Fashion Bloggers and best friends Nami and Pascale of Serendipity Ave show us how to style the classic black slip dress - a wardrobe essential. We had a chat with them to get inside their heads and understand life as a fashion blogger and what it’s like to share your best friends wardrobe.
always thinking about our blog and new creative ways to connect with our followers. Do you have similar taste in fashion?
We met in the Bay Of Islands 10 years ago working on dolphin swim boats. Pascale was a crew member and Nami a photographer.
Pascale: I would say we do. It’s a oversized tomboy chic thrown in with a bit of glam. Nami: It’s actually good we have a similar taste in style because that means we can share our wardrobe haha. The one thing that differentiates us a bit is that I love leather bottoms whilst Pascale lives in her denims.
How has the blog developed since you started?
What current fashion item are you obsessed with?
Nami: It really is full on, like a good full on. We have never dreamed to get such great responses and building a following of over 20k in under 2 years, on our social channels. Like wow people actually like what we are doing?! We are able to work with so many amazing brands and we can’t wait to see where the blog will take us! Like world domination? We are ready! Joking .. or are we? Haha, We are riding the wave and absolutely loving it.
Pascale: A shoe with a mid heel, think Balenciaga Ceinture boots. Nami: Leather bottoms, I invested in a pair of leather pants from Marissa Webb which meant I had to live of 2 minute noodles for a month, but it was oh so worth it!
Where did you guys meet?
Describe a typical day for you both Pascale: A typical day would be in this order gym, work (we both still work full-time), home, blog work, photoshoots or events (usually in Auckland), sleep and repeat. Nami: If we have a day off which happens like never, as you know the social and fashion world doesn’t sleep, we try to spend time with our partners and my two pugs. But we are
Who are your style icons? Pascale: My number one style icon is Christine Centenera. There is no way she can do wrong in my eyes. Oh and also Marina Didovich and Alexandra Spencer, for their use of colour and sassiness. Nami: Model Gizele Oliveira’s (instagram stalk her). Her style speaks to my soul. Also a Kiwi girl that I can’t take my eyes off is Jess Thomson editor and stylist for Fashion Quarterly, her understated cool style gets me every time. Oh and Erin Wasson is my badgal style crush.

SUPER CITIZENS
With L’Oréal New Zealand Cosmetic giant L’Oréal trades makeup for paint brushes and spades for their annual Citizen Day.
The company, who has a partnership with Fostering Kids New Zealand, provides ongoing support to those in care.
The Citizen Day, which began eight years ago sees thousands of L’Oréal employees volunteer in communities in need all over the world. The movement, emerging on the 100th anniversary of the company is a way to commemorate the companies success not by throwing a celebration, but by giving back to the community.
“More than 450 teenagers from care have graduated from the L’Oréal Face Your Future careers program since 2009. Many have gone on to further education, training and employment, including some whom are now working within our own business.” Says L’Oréal Communications Manager Tanya Abbott.
This year Beauty Bible editor Leah Vine travelled to Dingwall Trust in the Coromandel with the L’Oréal team to clean up the camp and spend time with the refugee women and children in care.
The company and its many employees believe Citizen Day to be a highlight of the year and a rewarding experience not only for those who they are helping, but for the team themselves.
“It was a truely rewarding experience. What L’Oréal is doing is fantastic, it was a day I won’t forget” she says. Over the years L’Oréal New Zealand have built playgrounds, painted bedrooms and faces, danced, sung, gardened, and cooked up a storm for families in need.
“It just feels good to do good.” Says Abbott.

BEAUTIFUL BACK PACKS New Zealand charity I Got Your Back Pack is on a mission to make a difference with their special care packages. The charity, which began in 2016, provides back packs filled with essential items to women and children affected by domestic violence. They believe that these packs provide hope to those going through safe houses accross the country. “To be able to give them a special gift that is just for them that shows them that someone is thinking of them is fantastic. The children are often on edge and unsure what to expect and to give them a wee backpack they call their own with special gifts in it goes a long way towards helping them feel like the safe house is a safe and ok place for them to be.” Says Women’s Refuge Assistant Manager. The I Got Your Back Packs containing food, water, and personal care products as well as toys, books and games for the children are a way to show these survivors that someone cares. “It was so cool to come into the room to find this beautiful bag full of goodies on the bed just for me, it made me feel like wow someone did that for me. It really brought tears to my eyes I felt quite special.” Explains a survivor.
www.igotyourbackpack.org.nz
Founder Anita Hinton says that the idea for I Got Your Back Pack stemmed from her own personal journey through Women’s Refuge. “At the time I felt lost, hopeless and completely worthless. I didn’t want anyone to ever feel the way I did”. The charity is now run by an incredible, selfless team of women who are determined to see some positive change happen around domestic violence in New Zealand. I Got Your Back Pack hopes to eventually be able to provide not only care packs but practical support to survivors such as education and legal support. “That way we can help to make sure that no one falls between the cracks” says Hinton.
“I felt lost, hopeless and completely worthless. I didn’t want anyone to ever feel the way I did.”

BYE BYE BEAUTY STANDARDS With Jolene Guillum-Scott This movement for me is to inspire others to love themselves raw and ready. With and without makeup, with and without our hair done, with and without our birthday suit on! I know that there are voices out there already that also promote this same movement, but there are never enough voices. Everybody any size or shape needs to hear that they should love their bodies and anyone of any size or shape is allowed to promote it. The pressure to look or be a certain way can come from so many different things! But one of the main reasons is simply what we see all over the media. All we see in magazines, on T.V or on social media is women being teared down because they have gained a few kgs or “Kim K’s butt has cellulite, gross!” Even celebrities who have just had babies or are pregnant are picked on for the weight they have gained. On the other end of it, the woman who have lost weight or toned up are being praised. We see these “picture perfect” women and tiny models with no imperfections and average sized models being labelled as “plus size”. I could go on and on forever, but after all of this how could you expect women not to be pressured to look “perfect”? I have had people ask me plenty of times “how can you promote body positivity when you’re not even overweight,” or “You’re indirectly offending others that are bigger than you because you’re saying you have rolls”. Not everyone is going to like what I do and that’s fine. All I can do is try to explain where I am coming from and help them understand better. From a very young age up until about a year ago I spent some time every night in the bathroom after a shower looking at my body and crying. Why? Because I had eaten too much that day, or my legs were too fat, or because my skin wasn’t nice, or I had stretch marks and cellulite. I was a size 6. I would run multiple times a day and starve myself to achieve the size I used to be and one day I just looked in the mirror and asked myself, “Are you happy now?” The answer was no. It didn’t matter how small I became, it didn’t matter how tan I was or how nice my skin looked. I did not love myself and I was never going to. I was never going to love myself because the standards I chose to live by were not my standards. Those standards came from outside, from other people and not from within. As soon as I realised that all it took to be happy and love my body was to create my own standards was the day I began to actually live my life. I am now a size 8-10 and I love my body! I want to be fitter and healthier, yes, but I am confident and happy with myself just the way I am. I want to help others see that it is up to them if they want to have a great body, because it is their decision whether they want to love their bodies or not. I want others to know that it is not up to anyone else to tell them if they’re sexy or not. You are sexy if you want to be sexy!

LIVING THE LUXE LIFE With Iyia Liu Have you ever had a dream but had no idea where to start? We chatted with Waist Trainer and Luxe Fitness founder Iyia Liu who made hers a reality and is reaping the rewards. Tell us a little bit about your businesses? I started Waist Trainer 2 years ago from my home, and grew that into a multi-million dollar business in the first year, I then went on to launch Luxe Fitness and again grew that into a multi-million dollar business within it’s first year. I worked from home for the first year and a half, and have finally shifted into a warehouse. You can certainly run your own business on the side from your home. What made you want to start these businesses at such a young age? At Uni my initial goal was to study Law and Commerce to become a commercial lawyer, but I just hated the theory. In my 2nd year, I heard about the Nastygal story, where Sophie Amoruso started selling clothing from Ebay, and grew her online clothing retailer into a $100million business within a few years, this really inspired me to start my own business so I launched my own online clothing retailer as soon as I graduated. How does it feel to now own such a huge empire?
What is one of the biggest lessons that you have learnt throughout this journey? To keep trying and not to give up. I thought my first clothing business was going to take off, but it failed, whereas for Waist Trainer I hoped to sell 10 a week, and ended up building that into a multi-million dollar business. When my clothing business was failing, I began to look for full-time work on the verge of giving up, but I’m glad I persevered. What advice would you give to girls wanting to start up a business? Do it now, while you don’t have a mortgage, while you don’t have kids or other things to worry about and consider, take risks because what have you got to lose? And if you do have those things to worry about, it’s ok, you can still do it. Thanks to the internet and social media, its so low risk and low cost to start a business now What do you see for your future? Do you have any goals or aspirations? I’ve just launched an online course, “How to Start, Run and Grow your own E-Commerce business” available from my website www.iyialiu.com which is my little side project, and am looking into starting another E-com business at the end of this year, and will hope to launch early 2018.
It feels great, I always hoped to do something big but I never expected it to happen in this way. My life goal was to build a beautiful home on a lifestyle block and I’m so grateful to have been able to achieve that in my early 20’s.
