W
elcome to the first ever issue of The Beauty Bible, a digital magazine based in New Zealand focusing on beauty and all things related.
Firstly, let me introduce myself. My name is Leah, I am a graphic designer by trade and makeup artist by choice. This magazine combines both of those passions, and I am thrilled to finally be sharing it with you. When I first told people I thinking about creating a digital magazine most of them looked at me with slight confusion, and then the questions started rolling in. Was it a website? Was it a blog? But, how will it be printed? I was surprised by the amount of people who didn’t fully understand what I was doing, I mean a digital magazine isn’t exactly a new concept? It was then that I realised that here in New Zealand we don’t have anything like what I was thinking of doing. We have beauty magazine’s and we have beauty blogs, both are extremely popular amongst the beauty community, why not create something that combined the two?
What makes this magazine special is its writers. None of the content in here is written by journalists. What they are is a group of passionate, well-respected individuals who live and breathe beauty and everything that beauty means. Their opinions are honest, valid, and their tips are tried and true. As much as I love the online world, it is easy to get caught up in its craziness. With social media and online blogs slowly turning into product placement platforms the lines become blurred between genuine impressions and paid promotion. It is becoming difficult to decipher what is really sincere. My goal for The Beauty Bible is for whoever reads it to feel like they are taking a breather from this otherwise chaotic world. Happy reading! “It’s amazing what you can accomplish with good brows & a good attitude” Leah Vine Editor/Creative Director

5 SKINCARE TIPS FOR TRAVELLING
With Tessa of RefinedBy Travelling anytime soon? For those who are dying to escape the cooler months here in the Southern hemisphere, we’ve got the top tips to keep you glowing. From maintaining hydration during long-haul flights to avoiding skin fatigue, this is how to maintain good skin care, even when you’re mile high. 1. Dry Cabin Air This is probably one of the biggest issues you can have when flying. Even if you are downing bottles of water in-flight; dry, blotchy and irritated skin can often occur due to lack of hydration. Upgrade your moisturiser to a richer cream for the flight as well as a good hydration serum. Try adding a sparingly small amount of your favourite hydration mask around the eye area to help last the distance of your flight and keep those fine lines exaggerated by dehydration away. You should try to avoid blasting the air conditioner directly on your face by turning it slightly away and on a low setting. You might think ‘fresh air’ will help, but turning it down will help reduce dehydration in flight. 2. Carry-on restrictions Due to security measures, we sadly cannot take our favourite day-to-day products on board that are above 100ml. I opt for specially made travel packs that you can use in flight. This means you don’t have to give up your skin care routine and you don’t have to compromise on quality. Opt for a travel-sized version of your everyday products or pop down to your local supermarket and grab some compact empty bottles to make your own.
www.itsrefinedby.com
3. Airline food and drink Unless your flying with world renown air carriers like my favourites Air New Zealand, Qantas and Singapore Airlines; a lot of the food offered can be heavy and unhealthy leaving an unwanted mark on your skin. Coffee, soft drinks and alcohol are a big no when it comes to hydration. When it is combined with other contributing factors, consuming these beverages can often escalate dehydration - something you evidently want to avoid. 4. UVA/UVB Whether you are flying or travelling by train, bus or car, you are still at risk of sun exposure due to the size of the windows. I recommend applying sunscreen if you’re positioned in a window seat. Windows on planes do not block UVA rays which are associated with wrinkling and skin ageing. UVA is a higher dosage when at 20,000 feet. Apply a good protective moisturiser that has an SPF of 50+. You should also think about closing the window blind or curtain when you can. 5. Travel stress Lack of sleep and the general stress involved with travelling can contribute to fatigued and stressed out skin. How can you tell? Dark bags under the eyes as well as dry skin and blemishes are some of the tell-tale signs. Keep your under eyes hydrated by using a good hydration serum. Never go past a good hydration mist too. This helps keep your thirsty skin plump with hydration. Just remember to keep under 100ml when packing your carry-on.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO SKIN CARE
With Seed & Soul Our skin is a magical, cruel creature that gives us external clues about what is going on inside our bodies and with our health. We all suffer from pesky pimples every now and again but what is really causing them? Here are the some of the common causes of acne and how to fix them:
Forehead = Poor Digestion Try increasing your antioxidant intake by drinking more green tea to flush out toxins. Reduce your fat intake. Between the Brows = Liver Your body is telling you to lay off the booze, cut your alcohol and dairy intake. Nose = Heart/Gastrointestinal Issues Eat your greens, nuts and omega-rich fish and avoid spicy foods, meat and salt. Chin = Stomach Just like the forehead, try increasing your antioxidant intake by drinking more green tea to flush out toxins. Add some more fibre into your diet and cut out late night snacking.
If you are suffering from problem skin (or even if you are not) we recommend using natural paraben free products. If symptoms persist this could also be a sign of an allergy so head along to your local health store and get checked for any food allergies if needed. Not only are natural products better for you skin and health but they are easier on the environment too - many synthetic ingredients do not naturally break down and have been found to lead to aquatic toxicity, meaning that they can potentially pollute natural bodies of water such as lakes, and the sea, resulting in the deaths of fish and other aquatic life.
Hairline = Dirt Build Up Make sure you are cleaning your face properly and removing all of your makeup before hitting the sack. If you have a fringe pin it up and wash your hair regularly. Cheeks = Lungs Get outside and enjoy some fresh air. You may also need to give your cell phone and pillow cases a wash. Below Cheeks = Hormones These pesky zits are caused by a hormonal imbalance and tend to get worse during your period and times of stress, unfortunately there isn’t a lot you can do about them except drink lots of water and get some rest.
Seed and Soul is a small New Zealand owned and operated business run by two friends who have a passion for great skin care, health and wellbeing. They take a holistic approach to skincare and beauty - their products are made from natural, locally sourced ingredients and incorporate aromatherapy to soothe the mind body and soul. Plus, they test their products on willing humans and not animals so are cruelty free and vegan-friendly so you can rest easy knowing no bunnies were harmed in the making of your products.

EVERYDAY HABITS THAT ARE AGING YOUR SKIN
It is never too early to future proof your skin. Sometimes we have to look a bit deeper than the products we are putting on our faces. A great skincare routine is important, but some of your daily habits may be effecting your skin health more than you think.
1. Pollution Problems While embracing makeup free days and letting your skin breath can be beneficial, leaving skin fully exposed to sun and pollution can cause serious skin problems down the line. Pollution decreases oxygen and collagen in our skin leading to uneven skin tone and breakouts, while consistent sun damage could lead to more life-threatening issues like skin cancers. Guard your skin with an SPF Moisturizer everyday, even on days where you aren’t planning on being outside, even the smallest amount of sun exposure can cause wrinkles over time. Cleansing thoroughly every evening is also crucial to get rid of any nasties stuck in your pores from the day.
4. Get Your Beauty Sleep It is called beauty sleep for a reason... Studies have shown that women who sleep less than 7 hours per night have more wrinkles than those who get their recommended 8 hours. This is because while we sleep our skin goes through a renewal process, and the less time we sleep, the less time it has to rejuvenate.
5. Water Water Water! The older we get the thinner and drier our skin gets making it even more important to keep hydrated! We all know we are supposed to drink lots water to feel better on the inside, turns out downing those 8 glasses a day helps us to look better on the outside too.
6. Sleeping With Makeup On
Last but not least the biggest no no of all and a hard habit to break for some. We all have nights where we get home and really 2. Wash Less... cannot be bothered spending 10 minutes bent over a sink washing off our makeup. However, sleeping with a face of Excessive washing of your face can leave it dull. Keep the makeup on has extremely detrimental effects on the skin. The washing to a maximum of twice daily, and opt for a gentle, makeup combined with a days worth of environmental pollutants hydrating cleanser for the morning. Our skin restores itself seeps into your pores and breaks down the skin’s elasticity. overnight, and harsh cleansing or exfoliating after a nights sleep Always wash your makeup off, or at the very least keep a packet defeats the purpose of this process. As for exfoliating, twice a of makeup wipes next to your bed for a last resort. week is more than enough.
3. Moisturise More Moisturizing is a huge must for preventing aging, and doing it twice daily is essential no matter what your age or your skin type. There is a common misconception that those with oily skin should avoid moisturising, but the problem with skipping this step is that your skin starts to produce more oil to make up for the lack of moisture.

THE TRUTH BEHIND YOUR MANICURE
With Bonnie Hu We had the pleasure of sitting down with Bonnie Hu, Makeup Artist and Nail Technician. Bonnie brought up some interesting points about the nail industry, we asked her to shed some light on the truth about cheap manicures and the hidden costs many of us don’t think about.
How can we tell the difference between a properly trained nail tech and someone who isn’t?
What new nail trends are you noticing lately?
1. Cheap is not the best! 2. Do you research! 3. Ask questions! Ask them what brand of products they use, ask for their qualification and council health protection licence. I know the convenience and cost of going to a mall salon is tempting, but it is not worth having your nails look pretty for two weeks if it causes damage that can take a year or longer to heal.
Your nail tech should be asking you lots of questions, instead of only giving you what you ask. A well-trained and knowledged nail tech would ask your needs, get to know your nail condition What made you want to open a nail studio? and nail history, and then diagnose what the most suitable services are for you. When you ask any questions to your nail I have always wanted to find a business that would go along with tech, he/she should have detailed answers to solve any of your makeup. I have loved doing nail art with traditional nail concerns, and also educate you at the same time. If they can’t polishes for many many years, but somehow I never thought I answer your questions and concerns it is likely that they are not could turn it into a career. Sometimes you are so blinded until properly trained. you get out of your comfort zone (resigning my full time job in my case), and then suddenly you find that missing piece of the What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get their puzzle! nails done?
Free hand nail art! Plain colours are still oh-so-chic but lately my clients are loving designs, patterns and pictures hand-painted on their finger nails. Ballerina nails aka the ‘coffin shape’ is making a big comeback, it may have slightly taken over the sharp stiletto styled claws. What do you think are the main differences between going to a cheap salon as opposed to independent nail techs?
What is your key to success?
Be passionate, be patient and do it right! Being passionate and loving what you do is so important. No business was born a The “mall salons” are also called NNS - non standard salon, they success, so being patient is a must. And do it right from the might be convenient and cheap, but you are very likely to have beginning, don’t cut corners and keep the quality high - your your nails damaged after their services. They generally do not customer knows. care about the health of your natural nails, profit is their only concern. Going to an independent nail tech who is qualified, licenced, and well trained, is going to help you achieve your dream nail goals without damaging your natural nails, instead, protecting them to get longer and stronger. Most people assume that acrylic damages your natural nails, but that is not true at all. Cheap salons tend to use nasty products and the wrong application and removal techniques which has ruined the reputation of acrylic nails, when in fact the acrylic itself is not to blame in these cases.
www.bonniehu.co.nz @nailsbybonniehu
Are there any dangers going to cheap salons? Yes! You’re 95% guaranteed to have damaged nails from their service as they are not properly trained for acrylic nails or any other enhancement. They also do not give proper after care instructions, cut corners and do not use professional products (or even fake OPI, Gelish etc.) to cut their cost. All of this leads to huge health and safety concerns. They also do not properly disinfect their tools or basins at all, which can cause nail infections and fungal diseases.

STYLE FILES OF A PAGEANT QUEEN
With Hannah Carson Meet Hannah, former Miss International New Zealand, Director of Miss Auckland, blogger, and absolute style queen. We had a chat with Hannah to gain insight into a typical day in her shoes... And they are some pretty great shoes.
What is one beauty product you can’t live without?
How did you get into directing pagents?
What are your everyday makeup items?
I first competed in Miss Auckland in 2009 and I was hooked. Fast forward to Miss New Zealand in 2012, since then I have represented New Zealand overseas four times, with one win in the Miss FX Pro in Spain, one fifth place at Miss Global City in China and one Top 15 at Miss Intercontinental in Germany. Because I come from a dance background, I was asked to choreograph Miss New Zealand which I have been doing since 2013. I am so passionate about the doors it has opened for me and passing those opportunities on to younger women. Pageants have truly changed my life, I have traveled the world, I have so much more confidence, had the craziest experiences that money could never buy and I have friends in every country! So in 2015 I directed Miss Auckland for the first time and it was the most successful the pageant has ever been, I love modernising the different aspects of it and creating a relevance in today’s society. We no longer do swimwear and focus on creating awareness for our chosen charities and causes. In the last two years we raised over $39,000 for charity. Seeing the girls on Day One then seeing how they have changed on the final night just creates so much happiness for me!
Tinted moisturiser, concealer, brow pencil & brow gel, Mac Mineralize Skin Finish powder, a little bit of Tom Ford highlighter and a L’Oreal mascara.
This is a tricky question! If I had to only have one it would definitely be moisturiser. I hate having dry skin!
What current fashion item are you obsessed with? Bags!!! I’ve suddenly become obsessed with bags and it’s dangerous! Who are your style icons? Jennifer Hawkins and Lydia Millen.
Describe your typical day. I don’t have a typical day which I love. Everyday I am doing something different! The one thing that stays the same is it always must start with coffee! Three times a week I will head to the gym, I’ll catch up on emails and have a huge healthy breakfast. I’m then pretty much always working - whether I’m off to meetings, shooting for my blog, writing content for a client or off to train the girls. Something they all have in common is creativity which is great, it keeps me sane! Describe your personal style. My personal style is definitely classic. I love filling my wardrobe with high quality items that I will wear year after year. I love to invest in shoes, coats and accessories that are classic and that last. I’ll then mix up the more expensive pieces with pieces from Zara, it’s my absolute favourite!

BEAUTY PRODUCTS TO GET YOU SET FOR WINTER
With Cassandra Thompson Winter is most definitely upon us and with the shift in seasons, a change in your beauty regime is much needed. Think of it like changing your toothbrush, but it is much more exciting and it means you can either; a) Go shopping for some new beauty goodies, or b) Shop your stash for those products you may have discarded over summer. It is a great way to discover those products you used to love. Here are some of the areas in your beauty regime you should change up to suit the season.
For a more moisturising option that still has a matte finish, the Maybelline Color Sensational Loaded Bold Lipstickshave a large shade range, with some darker red and even a ‘greige’ shade to add something a little daring to your makeup looks.

TOP TIPS FOR LONG LASTING MAKEUP
With Kate Manihera Auckland makeup artist and Youtube vlogger Kate Manihera shares with us what she loves most about her job, and how to ensure your makeup stays flawless, no matter what you are up to this season. What made you want to become a Makeup Artist? I actually never intended on becoming a Makeup Artist. I was always the nerd in my family so I think my parents were hoping I would end up as the doctor/lawyer. My business started after I began getting creative with my own makeup and had friends/ family start asking me to do theirs. When I realised I had a passion for it in 2015, I decided just to take the leap and become a MUA. What is your favorite thing about doing people’s makeup? My favourite part about being a makeup artist is definitely seeing my clients’ reactions when I hand them the mirror! Making someone feel more confident in themselves is the best feeling in the world.
What are you go-to makeup products for a big event? My go-to products are false lashes, either xo Beauty Gold Diggers or Ardell Wispies, Becca Champagne Pop highlighter, Hoola Bronzer and MAC Face and Body foundation. These products will always be on my face if I’m out at an event. What are your top makeup tips for long lasting makeup for a night out? Use a primer, a setting spray (I am such a fan of the skindanavia range), and bring both concealer and a powder compact with you. If you’re tearing it up on the dance floor then your makeup is bound to start sweating off, so its best to bring a couple of touch up products in your handbag to ensure you can fix yourself up afterwards.
What are your future goals/aspirations for your business? My three passions have always been makeup, business and helping people. One day I want to combine these together to create something bigger than just makeovers. I am currently studying a bachelor of business at AUT to ensure I have the tools in the future to expand my company further.

THE POWER OF MAKEUP
By Maddy Paget We go through the motions every morning, we fill in our brows and bronze our cheeks, coat our lashes in mascara and cover our dark circles with concealer. For so many of us, applying makeup is a daily ritual and we become so used to it that we never consider just how powerful it truly is. Of course we wear makeup because we appreciate the way it makes us look, and the way it can hide our imperfections so well. However, although aesthetic is a big part of my love affair with makeup, it isn’t the whole picture. After seeing the YouTube Tag “The Power of Makeup” started by Nikki Tutorials go viral, I really started thinking about my own reasons for wearing makeup and how I feel it improves my day to day life. My favourite assumption that comes from non-makeup wearers is that we wear makeup to impress other people. As if I would spend my hard earned money on a $60 highlighter only for my boyfriend to ask me why my face is so sparkly! Nor do I spend hours getting my winged liner even just for someone to tell me I look like Cat Woman. The real reason that I wear makeup is because of the way it makes me feel. I think it’s incredible that experimenting with your makeup style can do so much for your self-esteem. It’s a creative expression, it’s art. There are so many different opinions and preferences to how people wear their makeup, but there are absolutely zero rules. It’s all about expressing your own individual personality and your own mood. People who don’t wear makeup often assume that it’s worn to hide what we really look like. While makeup is great for covering our imperfections, it doesn’t make us any more or less beautiful. In reality, you’re looking at the same face with or without makeup, the only difference is that with makeup we look more flawless, and our features are more defined. If I’m feeling low, I know that wearing a bright red lippy will help me to give me the boost I need to conquer my day. I know that a pair of false eyelashes and a perfect contour make me feel like I can take over the world. I know that covering my dark under eye circles makes me feel like I didn’t stay up all night watching Netflix, even though I did. Unfortunately, there’s a common misconception that covering our flaws is a bad thing, like we aren’t showing our true selves if you can’t see our pimples, and the veins on our eyelids. In my opinion, if makeup enables you to feel better about yourself and be more confident in your own skin, it’s worth a try. Personally, I feel so much more “me” when I’m wearing makeup, because I feel like I’m showing the world a side of my personality that isn’t shown through my natural face. I feel confident and I feel bold. That doesn’t mean that I don’t feel beautiful without it. The power of makeup is that it enables us to express our individuality and look on the outside, how we feel on the inside. Makeup is powerful because it can speak for us when we aren’t feeling up to speaking for ourselves. If makeup can do all of this while also ensuring we look fabulous, then it must be pretty incredible. Makeup is fun, creative, supportive, encouraging. Makeup is powerful.

HOW-TO: THE PERFECT CUT CREASE
With Alyshia Jones The cut crease is one of this years’ biggest makeup trends. It may STEP 4 look difficult to master, but Bay Of Plenty makeup artist Alyshia Jones breaks it down for us and demonstrates how to create this Next create a wing using eye liner making sure to keep the line stunning eye look in 6 easy steps. on your lid as close to the lash line as possible and make the wing mimic the shape of the cut crease effect. STEP 1 STEP 5 Blend a light brown shade with an orange under tone in the crease with a big fluffy blending brush. Fill in your lower and upper lash line and inner corner with a black eye liner, extending the inner corner with eye liner to create an STEP 2 elongated eye effect. With a smaller defined blending brush, add a darker brown in the STEP 6 crease and underneath the lower lash line. Add mascara and false lashes and you are good to go! STEP 3 Using a concealer cover the lid space making sure to not go over the crease, then extend the concealer out in a flick motion to the end of the eye brow. Set the concealer with a white or cream shade then apply your colour of choice - I used a light gold.

FROM THE CHAIR
With Brooke from Hare & Hunter How did you start out as a Hairstylist? I started my apprenticeship at a high end salon in Sydney when I was 16. Creating cool hairstyles just came naturally to me while I was at school, and I really did not want to stay at school any longer! So I decided to leave to start my apprenticeship, 12 and a half years later and I still love it!! What made you want to start ‘Hare & Hunter?”
What hair products are your ‘go-to’ for personal & professional use? My faves would have to be Oi all-in-one Milk, it is a very light weight leave in moisturiser, I use it before blow drying, it comes out as a mist so it distributes evenly and doesn’t weigh any hair type down. After curling, I always apply invisible serum, it is the yummiest smelling product ever! It is a light weight creamy serum that has a slight tackiness to it, so it helps separate those waves, adds grit and tames fly aways. It is great for leaving hair down as is, or as a prepping product before you up style. And another must have is the texturising dust. After i’ve finished prepping the hair, I sprinkle the dust through the roots, this helps create volume and grit to get the perfect tease happening. I also sprinkle it through the curls if I am about to create a messy bun. Sometimes clients have such slippery hair, you just need it to feel dirty to achieve that messy look that is going to hold all night. All of these products are by Davines, I can not recommend this brand enough. Their products are environmentally friendly, don’t test on animals and smell divine!
I moved to NZ with my kiwi husband and our then 10 month old son in March 2016, I was going to get a job in a salon part time just to ease into life here in Auckland and make some new friends, but having run my own business in Sydney for the past 8 years prior to moving here, I decided it was a no brainer to start up another business. I knew it would take some time and patience, as I only had one friend here and no money to put into marketing, but once i made a few clients through my one friend, made some amazing connections with the right people, and worked really hard on my social media, it really paid off! A year later and I am super happy I decided to take that chance with Hare & Hunter. What have you noticed are the biggest differences between NZ & Australian clients/trends? What is it that you love most about your job? I feel like kiwi women prefer a more relaxed hair style for their I love when I’ve really made a difference to how someone feels wedding, lots of braids and messy buns. Sydney women go for about themselves, it is a pretty special feeling when someone more of a glam look, a popular style would be the classic S-bend shows so much emotion just from having nice hair! At one of the wave or a sleek chignon. But i have noticed that tousled waves weddings I was a part of last year, I held my mirror up to show are favoured by both countries. You cant beat beachy waves. the mother of bride how she looked after I has finished, and she actually cried! Not just a little cry, I am talking a proper sob, bless. When it comes to colour, I feel like Aussies get their hair done She felt so beautiful and confident and it just made me feel so more often, so they tend to be on the blonder side, kiwis like to good that I can have that kind of effect on someone. #joblove keep it low maintenance, so I create lots of variations of tortoise shell and ashy browns for them. Describe your typical work day. Have you noticed any particular hair trends lately? Each day is different for me, One day I might be working from my home studio cutting and colouring, the next day I will be on Now that the weather is starting to cool down, most of my clients location for a wedding, and then another day I will be doing a are wanting to go darker with their colour. So I am just using what styled shoot in an amazing venue or location. And then I have they have as a base and tweaking it slightly by deepening the to find time in between all of that to do admin and social media roots, adding lots of lowlights and bringing the toner down a few posting, not to mention fitting in time to be a mum/wife. shades, but I still try and keep some light sections through the lengths to create texture and dimension. Do you have any future aspirations for your brand/business? I am seeing lots of lobs! Especially on my brides who have just returned from their honeymoon. They keep their hair long for the I would love to see Hare & Hunter spread out across NZ and wedding and just want to chop it all off afterwards! potentially back in Oz. It would be amazing to have talented people working for the brand who want to make brides beautiful And for weddings, I felt like the messy low bun with some sort of in the places that I can’t get to. Definitely a future goal! braid variation was the winner for my first season here in Auckland. Next to that, the half up half down with waves was another fave.

CONQUERING CANCER, ONE LIPSTICK AT A TIME
With Hannah Rye Meet Hannah, 15 year old Australian born aspiring makeup artist and one of the most positive and inspirational people we have had the pleasure of knowing. This is her story. My name is Hannah Rye, I was born on the 20th of December 2001. When I was 13, I was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma. It is an extremely rare form of bone and tissue cancer which was unfortunately found in my spinal cord, vertebrae and wrapped around in my spinal tissue. It rocked my world, just like it would with anyone else. It just shows that your life can completely turn around in a matter of days. One of the most inspirational people I met during my treatment - in fact through my entire life, was my bestfriend Connar. He was just starting kindergarten when he was diagnosed , and fought an extremely long and hard battle which ended in him passing away on October 8th, 2016 at age nine, I loved him very much. He would always brighten my day in any sort of situation, his mum even told me recently that he said he would’ve married me, he was very witty like that.
I love everything about makeup the bold colours, different textures and finishes. The sky is the limit. I think one of my first brands I fell in love with was Mac, I would love just going into my local store to see what new and beautiful things they were creating and bringing to consumers. I would love to work on their runways one day, their slogan “all ages , all races , all sexes” really speaks to me in that we are all equal. I think the absolute number one piece of advice I would give to anyone overcoming a challenge in their life is to definitely keep going. Despite what people think you should be doing, just be yourself. The only things you ever regret in life are the things you don’t do, take leaps & be the best version of you because you can’t be anybody else.
I think the best thing about makeup is that no matter what your going through in your life you can transform yourself into anyone or anything. It reflects whatever your imagination tells you, and you can completely shut away from your life and create what you want.

MIND OVER MATTER
Do, Be, Think Positive In life your attitude and your thoughts reflect on all that you do. Looking good on the outside is one thing, but feeling good on the inside is everything. Learning to find the bright side of a situation and avoiding negativity are fundamental steps in improving your life and achieving your goals. Sometimes being a positive person is easier said than done, but there are a number of daily steps that you can take to start changing your thought process.
Surround Yourself With Positive People
Start Smiling More
Productivity Over Procrastination
It may seem like an obvious point, but studies have shown that when you smile your brain activates neural messages that actually make you feel more positive. As we all know smiling is contagious, spreading positivity to those around you by flashing a simple grin will in return make you feel better. At first it may seem forced, but it will eventually become a habit that is difficult to break.
Keeping yourself busy with activities that you enjoy, or tasks that will make you feel accomplished is an easy way to avoid negative emotions. Crossing things off your ‘to-do’ list is a satisfying feeling, procrastinating can have the opposite effect making you feel unmotivated.
Do Nice Things For Others
Excercise is shown to have drastic and positive effects on your mood, releasing stress-reducing hormones in your body that help to keep you feeling great. Excercise can be daunting for some, try to find a form of physical activity that you enjoy. Go for a walk with a friend, join a team, or sign up to a class. The options are endless.
One word - ‘karma’. Whether you believe in it or not, one thing is certain, you will always feel better about yourself when you help out those in need. Whether it is spending a day doing volunteer work, or something as simple as complimenting a stranger, brightening someone else’s day is guaranteed to make yours slightly better.
Stop Comparing As the saying goes “A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms”. Comparing yourself to others is so easy with social media platforms like Instagram depicting carefully curated versions of people’s lives. Always remember that nobody is perfect. Everyone has struggles, and someone may even be looking at you wishing they had what you have. Comparing yourself to others is one of the easiest ways to get stuck in a rut and begin to feel unworthy. Forget about what others are doing and focus on being the best version of yourself.
The people we surround ourselves with either raise or lower our standards. Surround yourself with positive thinkers who encourage and support your decisions. The world is full of negative people who get satisfaction from seeing others fail, avoid those people. Empower others, and make time for the people who empower you.
Get Active
Take A Break Often negative emotions can stem from high stress levels. It is important to know when to take a break, relaxation is essential to staying positive. Sometimes life can get crazy, but even something as simple as taking a nap or a bath can have a great impact on your head space. Take a longer break if possible - Go on a holiday and use the time to recharge.
