Welcome to The Bend Magazine’s first annual Summer Guide. Summer in the Coastal Bend is our favorite time of the year. You just can’t beat sunny days, sparkling water, and fresh seafood caught straight from our Gulf Coast. There are a lot of guides around the region, such as visitor guides, dining guides, and relocation guides. However, summer is such a big deal here, our staff felt it deserved its very own, unique guide. The guide was created for newbies and natives alike. It includes everything you need to see, do, and experience this summer in Corpus Christi, Padre Island, Rockport and Port Aransas! The guide was designed to keep locals from summer boredom and offer visitors a great resource for all there is to do in the Coastal Bend when the fun starts to heat up. So, no matter who you are or how long you have been in the area, there is something for you here. As much as our team tried to cover everything there is to do this summer, we quickly realized that the possibilities are endless. It is simply impossible to compact all there is to do this summer into 32 pages. So consider this a starting point to a spectacular season. The City of Corpus Christi has partnered with Zagster to set up seven downtown bike share locations with 40 bikes available to rent. WATER ADVENTURES FUN TIME RENTALS From jet skies to paddle boats, Fun Time Rentals offers every water-related fun under the sun – literally. “If the sun’s out, we’re out,” says owner of Fun Time Rentals, Karim Abed Hamid. Those looking to spend their summer on the water have a variety of classic summertime experiences to choose from. It’s your one-stop-shop to rent jet skis, paddle boats, kayaks, and canoes. The rental times are flexible, ranging from as little as 15 minutes to over an hour. Patrons can enjoy riding one item for hours or spend the afternoon trying several. Wanting to experience some thrills? An exciting feature offered is the speed boat rides around the bayfront. The boats can go as fast as 40 miles per hour and can hold as many as six people. Fun Time Rentals also hosts daily dolphin sightseeing trips, which begin at 9:00 am. This is a treat for children and adults alike. “A lot of people have grown up in Corpus Christi but never seen a dolphin. It’s very exciting for them.” Hamid adds.
Another classic summer activity is fishing, and beginners or novices can get hands-on experience when they sign up for the fishing guide service. The red bike-like rides have become a staple to see along the bayfront. These surreys are another item to try from Fun Time Rentals. They offer a shade from the sun and can hold up to three adults and two children. This year, the summer is lasting longer at Fun Time Rentals. They will remain open through October and are located in the heart of downtown Corpus Christi at the intersection of North Shoreline Boulevard and the Lawrence Street T Head. LETS GO SHOPPING ISLAND FARMERS’ MARKET Lettuce turnip the power of buying local! It’s one thing our Coastal Bend residents love to do – and that is what Heather Stringer, Padre Island resident, was out to accomplish when she cofounded the Island Farmers’ Market. “My favorite working years were spent at an Art & Farmers’ Market in Kona, Hawaii. For 2 years I was there 5 days a week making and selling jewelry and chatting with all the locals and visitors. I could not imagine doing anything else,” Stringer says. She and her husband moved Islands and started their family. After staying home for 6 years, her favorite family night was the local weekly market in Kailua, Oahu. After moving to Corpus Christi about 4 years ago, Stringer started playing around with jewelry again, and her company Tula Blue was born. “My good friend and neighbor, Kelli DeNovellis, and I cofounded the market for multiple reason. We saw a void on the Island. We have this fabulous Island community, but it was without a regular event to unite us all. We wanted to bring everyone out together, and we wanted a venue for local farmers and small businesses. We had participated as vendors at some other local markets around town, and it was after one of these events that we realized we should and we could start our own Island Market,” shares Stringer. The Island Presbyterian Church agreed to
host this community event, so the dynamic duo dug their heels in, and a month later, the first Island Farmers’ Market was held. The turnout was so successful that the 3 farmers were sold out in under an hour. It was clear that the Island folks wanted access to locally grown produce and a place to buy local and shop small. “At our peak we have had 10 farmers plus another 30 food and art vendors. Every market is different though. Farmers and vendors come and go with the seasons, but we will always have something for you!” exclaims Stringer. “We only allow homegrown, homemade, and handcrafted items. Everyone is so passionate about what they are doing. You are truly supporting their dreams when you come out to see us. The Island Farmers’ Market is all about connection and community.” So come out and shop the Island Farmers’ Market, every other Thursday from 4-8 pm. Shop for fresh fruits and veggies, jewelry, oils, honey, homemade goods of all kinds, pet animals, eat from local food trucks, practice yoga, and listen to great music. The list goes on and on, so come prepared to spend hours shopping, eating, and dancing. ARTS & CULTURE PORT ARANSAS ART CENTER Less than a mile from the ocean is a place where art, culture, music, and workshops are found under one roof. The Port Aransas Art Center is home to all things arts and culture in South Texas. Much of the artwork featured in the gallery at the Port Aransas Art Center is created by local artists, but the type of art ranges drastically. The gallery features everything from photographs to paintings to pieces made from metal, glass and hanging clay. Many of the pieces on display at the art center reflect the culture of the Coastal Bend. Artists as far north as Houston have drawn on the nature, scenery, and wildlife in South Texas to create pieces that range from traditional to abstract. The Port Aransas Art Center has a gallery where you’ll rarely see the same item twice – their special exhibit changes every month. The center celebrates every new gallery exhibit with a tradition that never changes. The First Friday night has been on-going for the past 20 years. First Friday is when the Port Aransas Art Center invites the community to tour the
new exhibit while enjoying live music, wine, hors d’oeuvres and more. This completely free reception takes place the first Friday of each month from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. Among the other unique events on their calendar include a songwriter’s showcase, annual Artfest event and more. Those looking to get a hands-on experience can sign up for art classes. Their workshop area hosts weekly classes for adult beginner or intermediate, and children. The calendar this summer features water coloring, pastels, and drawing, and each class lasts approximately three hours. Those looking to take a piece of art home with them can visit the gift shop, which sells handmade jewelry, prints, original work and more. It is a special summer for the Port Aransas Art Center, because it is the last in their current location on North Alister Street. After a decade of fundraising, they have purchased and built their own new building, which they are slated to move in to at the end of the summer. 323 N. A LA MODE GELATERIA What’s better than cold gelato on a hot summer day? A gelato cookie sandwich, says A La Mode Gelateria superfan, David Eckenrode. Just over the Causeway that leads to Padre Island is your new confectionary addiction, A La Mode Gelateria. The quant café houses a bold menu of homemade gelato, pastries, and completely original creations. This local sweet shop is the brainchild of chefs Vita Jarrin and Gale Huesmann. These business partners and culinary pros make 16 - 18 flavors of gelato for each new day, and they can hardly keep them in stock. The flavors range from classics to original such as white chocolate raspberry and lavender peanut butter. Eckenrode, who has traveled the world says, “You wouldn’t expect anything like this in Corpus Christi.” It’s not just the range of gelatos that they offer, but also what they make with them that makes A La Mode Gelateria such a unique café. One of their feature items is the Nice Cream Sandwich: A cookie sandwich stuffed with a gelato flavor of your choice. Another original creation is called the Hawaiian Bio and is a take on an Italian Brioche, but served on king’s Hawaiian
bun, stuffed with gelato of your choice, and topped with whipped cream. They also put together homemade waffle creations, with gelato and toppings, and it is the favorite of another regular named Terri Cotten. “Their waffles are amazing.” Cotten gushes. “They’re big enough to share, but you probably won’t want to.” Their creations haven’t gone unnoticed. They were featured on the Food Network’s Cooks vs. Cons and Cut Throat Kitchen in 2016. It’s hard to think outside the gelato, but A La Mode does specialize in other sweets, too. They also routinely whip up batches of Tiramisu parfaits, Italian Cannoli’s or cookies. They’ve only been on Padre Island since February 2016, but some recipes, like for Nonna’s Cookies, go back generations. Nonna is Italian for grandmother and named after Jarrin’s mother. These light, sweet cookies sell as quickly as they make them. Pair your sweet with a cup of specialty coffee or tea and try every flavor of gelato this summer. BAY JAMMIN’ CONCERT & CINEMA SERIES From ebb and flow to rock and roll, the Bay Jammin’ Concert & Cinema series is a summertime tradition. For almost 30 years, the Bay Jammin’ Concert & Cinema Series has brought the Cole Park Anderson Amphitheater to life with a variety of top-notch musicians and first-run movies that the whole family will enjoy. This free concert and film series is a collaboration effort between J2Productions and the City of Corpus Christi Parks. Every Thursday and Friday night from June – August, Cole Park is the place to be when the sun sets over the beautiful Corpus Christi Bay. In 1989, during a lunch with the member of the Corpus Christi Parks department, J.J. Nelson, who owned a popular live music venue at the time, decided to take advantage of the empty amphitheater in Cole Park. “I wanted to promote publicity of the city and live music, but I also wanted to promote these bands who come touring through. They would do the free show and give people a taste. People would see the show and say, ‘Wow! That band was dang good.’ Otherwise, people would not be
familiar with them,” says Nelson. The original time was set from 7:30 to 9:30, so the band could break down and get over the venue. Over the years, bands like Blue October and Bob Schinder have made their way through Cole Park. Movies were added in 2002 with the help of Laura Gonzales Jasso, Special Events Program Manager for Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation. The series showcases both local and regional acts around Texas from a variety of genres.This year’s line-up includes crowd favorites like Another Level, Scarecrow People, The David Martinez Band, and One Destiny. Concerts start in June and last from 7:30 – 10:00 pm. On Friday nights, expect to see popular films such as BFG, The Secret Life of Pets, Finding Dory, and Moana at sunset. Concerts and movies are free, thanks to the generous support of local businesses and the city. Works include painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, graphics and design works. This exhibition is sponsored in part by TAMU-CC School of Arts, Media, and Communication.
Full-color award-winning photographs from the 2015 Wildlife in Focus biennial photography competition are on display, with photographers’ metadata, on 20 art pillars along the Mary Hope Brennecke Nature Trail. The exhibition is included in general admission, and may be viewed from 9 am to 6 pm daily, except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas. The varied collection was shot by photographers partnering with South Texas landowners, and includes birds, mammals, invertebrates, reptiles/amphibians and specialty animals.
The brand new Water Street Gallery is sure to entice surfers and non-surfers alike this May! Their work will go beyond the genre normally referred to as “surf art” to include thoughtful expressions of the ocean and beaches having been involved in the preservation of the Gulf Coast for years – and in many cases, most of their lives.
