Brazillian Butt Lift People have been talking about the Brazilian Butt Lift for a few years now, but most people are afraid to ask, “Is it real?” and, “If it’s real, what does it do?” The Brazlian Butt Lift (BLL) is a common plastic surgical procedure that uses liposuction to improve the curves of the waist and hip. Fat is transferred to the buttock area from other parts of the body and improves the posterior curve. Liposuction is one of the most common plastic surgical procedures performed today and can result in dramatic improvements in the body shape, which in turn can improve self-confidence and self-image. Because the fat is removed with intentions to improve the appearance of the body, the procedure is more appropriately called liposculpture. Significant weight changes after liposculpture can affect the outcome of your surgery, so it’s best to be at or near your goal weight before scheduling the procedure. After deciding on plastic surgery, the next step is to pick your surgeon. It is very important to make sure your surgeon has the necessary training, has completed his/her residency, and is board certified. In plastic surgery, a membership in the American Board of Plastic Surgery confirms that your surgeon has successfully completed residency, passed their board exams, and follow the high ethical and professional standards set by the organization. It is also important to make sure that you have a good rapport and feel comfortable with your plastic surgeon and their office staff.

Controlling Your Blood Pressure Blood pressure is the pressure blood puts on the walls of blood vessels as it circulates through your body. High blood pressure is when the force of the circulating blood is consistently too high, which can put you at risk for health issues such as strokes, heart attacks, and heart failure, among other conditions. Mountain Valley Regional Rehabilitation Hospital suggests making positive lifestyle choices to help control blood pressure: • Eat a healthy diet
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Reduce your salt intake
• Limit alcohol
• Exercise regularly
• Manage stress
• Quit smoking
High blood pressure usually doesn’t have any signs or symptoms, so protect yourself by getting your blood pressure tested and discuss it with your physician.

SAVE YOUR NATURAL TOOTH!
Has your dentist told you that you need root canal treatment? If so, you’re not alone. Millions of teeth are treated and saved each year with root canal, or endodontic, treatment. Watch our videos at southtexasendo.com to learn more!
I
nside the tooth, under the white enamel and a hard layer called the dentin, is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, and helps to grow the root of your tooth during development. In a fully developed tooth, the tooth can survive without the pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it. Contrary to jokes about the matter, modern endodontic treatment is very similar to having a routine filling and usually can be completed in one or two appointments, depending on the condition of your tooth and your personal circumstances. You can expect a comfortable experience during and after your appointment. We also provide nitrous, oral and IV sedation for the anxious patient.
If you are given a choice between root canal treatment or tooth extraction, always choose root canal treatment. Dentistry has yet to produce a denture, bridge or implant that looks, feels and functions as well as a natural tooth. Never choose extraction because you think it will be quicker! Endodontic treatments generally require one to two visits lasting less than an hour each. An extraction requires one visit, but the denture, bridge or implant will require several additional visits with your dentist. Never choose extraction because you think it will be cheaper! When a natural tooth is extracted, it must be replaced with an artificial tooth to prevent other teeth from shifting, and to prevent future dental problems. The cost of a denture, bridge or implant, plus the extraction, often is higher than the cost of an endodontic procedure that would save the tooth for years to come. Most dental insurance plans cover endodontic treatment.
Saving the natural tooth with root canal treatment has many advantages such as: • • •
Efficient chewing Natural appearance Normal biting force eating your favorite foods
• •
Protects other teeth from excessive wear or strain Limits the need for costlier, ongoing dental work
Call South Texas Endodontics: Dr. Anthony, Dr. King (Board Certified) and Staff are here to answer your questions. If you have any questions about root canal procedures, you can visit our website at southtexasendo.com or call us at 361-992-7871.

On the Cover: The Local’s List issue is one where our staff steps back and allows the reader's voice to truly be heard. Everything our magazine represents comes to life in the form of a reader’s choice poll where each of you tell us what your favorites are. While we usually photograph one of the winners for the cover, we wanted to do things a little differently this year. The Local’s List is an all-encompassing list of the local community. So, we decided to curate a cover that would serve as an all-encompassing symbol of the Coastal Bend. When we thought about it that way, it was quite simple. And thus, we found our favorite patch of palm trees and started taking photos. (Photo by Jarred Schuetze)

It’s tempting for me to say The Local’s List Party, because I cannot wait to see your jaw drop when you walk into this year’s big event! Honestly though, nothing tops being able to call a hard-working business owner and let them know that our community voted them as the leader in their category. That’s what this is all about, after all–allowing locals to shine a light on other locals who excel at what they do.
Chris Knapick,
Director of Business Development
My favorite thing about Local's Lists is that it brings together the businesses, individuals, events and locations that make the Coastal Bend what it is, a great place to live. It’s amazing to see all the nominations we received and how many voted. Even though a spotlight is put on the winners, in reality there are no losers. All the nominees make up the fabric of our local lifestyle that we all take great pride in.

Local’s List is a great project, not only because we get to support the Coastal Bend’s artisans and small businesses, but because itreally enables locals to tell us what they like, and what they want to see more of. Knowing what the locals are currently into helps us curate content that people want to see and read.

JULY / Letter From The Publisher
I
read a lot of magazines. It’s something that comes with the territory. Rarely am I surprised by a new title on the newsstands, but the day I first flipped through a copy of Airbnb Magazine I was in shock. Why would a digital company, focused on short-term rentals, decide to release a print magazine? As I read through the articles, I realized this was not a magazine about Airbnb at all—it was a publication dedicated to celebrating local culture, history, and tradition. Personally, I love the opening line on their “About Us” page, which says: “To uncover the true character of a place, you need to bypass the tourist stomping grounds and experience a location’s history, food, and customs through the eyes of the people who live there.” Since we launched The Bend Magazine in 2014, I have hoped to do just that. We started The Local’s List feature three years ago with the hopes to make our annual “Best Of ” issue less about what we like and more about what the people who live here like. It’s basically the local’s guide to experiencing the best of the Coastal Bend. Our readers nominated and voted
The Local’s Guide to Local for their favorite food trucks, breakfast tacos, and boutiques. We do everything we can to make sure word gets out to the community and voting is fair and accurate. In 2016, we received only about 16,000 votes; this year votes reached 75,000. Each month, we aim to go deep into the heart of the Coastal Bend through stories and guides that capture the essence of life here. It seems as if change is happening everyday, all around us. There is a new bridge under construction, we will soon have new representation in congress, and new businesses are opening all over town. Who knows what The Local’s List will look like in 10 or 15 years from now. However, if you want to know what life in the Coastal Bend looks like in 2018, turn to page 40, for the locals have spoken. We hope to see each of you at The Local’s List party on July 26th. Jordan Regas, Publisher

Green Light Coffee Southside
Green Light Coffee, an uptown small business known for its bright green coffee bus, has opened a new location on the Southside. Their weekday hours range from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — perfect for a post-brunch or post-church pick-me-up. Green Light may serve as a spot to wind down, as well — cocktails are to be added to the Southside location’s menu.
Yoga Time Studios
This yoga studio, which recently moved to a new location in Water Street Village, offers a variety of yoga courses, including Buti yoga, a yoga workout that incorporates dance, and is often evoked as yoga for “boss babes.” This studio was a major contributor in June’s Sun Blissed Festival at BUS, and they strive to promote both a healthy lifestyle and community engagement through charity. Check out their donation-based Sunday yoga classes at the Texas Surf Museum, or the Buti Brunches occurring at BUS through August. Each Buti Brunch features a local non-profit organization, and attendees are encouraged to donate in lieu of a class fee.
Roots Café
Coastal Confections
This new bakery on Alameda serves home-y baked goods in a casual atmosphere. Coastal Confections opened on May 23rd, and serves cookies, cupcakes, and sticky buns, among other confiture. Patrons can savor a treat in the shop — with a cup of locally roasted Driftwood coffee — or take a treat to-go, like their decorated chocolate-covered cream cookies.
24 The Bend
Juice-pressing duo Coryn and Justin are planning to expand their business by opening up the Coastal Bend’s first entirely plant-based café! The two entrepreneurs are dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle in the Coastal Bend, by providing a warm, relaxed atmosphere where residents can grab a nutritious bite to eat. They are currently raising money to support the endeavor, and are doing so by crowdfunding (on indiegogo.com) and hosted a vegan BBQ fundraiser at Wildflowers on June 30th. The BBQ was a hub for local pop-ups, as well as jackfruit pulled pork.

magine tasting sweet, freshly picked onions from local gardens or the sight of green shoots sprouting from dry pinto beans planted in rich, warm, Coastal Bend soil. You can experience both of these things at the Learning Garden, a part of GROW Local South Texas. The experts there will even let you in on the best time to harvest Dragon Kale! Aislynn Campbell, the Executive Director of the four-corner garden plot on Up River Road on the Northside of town, believes in the simple concept of “teach a man to fish rather than giving him a fish.” She states, “Our primary goal here is to teach you how to grow wherever you’re at.” Since sprouting in 2013, the garden remains open five days a week for growers and four days a week for those who want to volunteer, learn, or explore digging in the dirt. Campbell and the gardeners show people around, introduce the garden’s concept, and tell visitors how to start their own garden at home. Campbell would be overjoyed if every backyard in Corpus Christi brimmed with food and flowers. Joining the garden is membership-based and includes discounts to local businesses and other benefits. Reduced fees are available for students and veterans.
28 The Bend
“While I’ve been out here working in the garden for all these years, I’ve learned so much about wildlife and have seen every kind of caterpillar and butterfly,” Campbell says, looking over her garden corner, complete with bishop flowers and young vines. “It’s just being able to sit for a second and hear and see things that you don’t when driving through concrete.” The gardeners at the Learning Garden hope to affect a change in the way Corpus Christi residents view food by producing and sharing their harvests with the community. In addition to helping others grow plants in the Learning Garden, Programs Manager, Cynthia Garcia, overlooks most of the community involvement of the garden with the annual Farm-to-Table dinner. This program encourages the spread of locally sourced food. The garden is also a part of the Corpus Christi Downtown Farmers Market held every Wednesday. Gardeners arrive with oodles of fruits and vegetables that were harvested that same morning. Campbell believes in the growth opportunity our area offers because we have more pliable, healthy farming land than we have residents. For this reason, she and other garden members want to inspire the community to yank a green revolution from the soil and take it to their own backyards. Creating a community space for people to come together, grow together, and enjoy each other’s company blossoms into a neighborly support system. If cultivated properly, programs like the Learning Garden can produce a bounty of benefits. Contact: growlocalstx.com

also gluten-free. It is not a choice for us. Even the slightest amount of gluten ingested can make me miserable for hours. We all have intestinal issues, foggy brains, and fatigue when we eat gluten. The little ones become quite agitated and their behavior deteriorates to meltdowns when they eat gluten. One of my daughters is allergic to dairy, also, and breaks out into hives just touching cheese, so my bread is dairy free also. HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED A HIGH DEMAND FOR GLUTEN-FREE GOODS THAT HASN’T NECESSARILY BEEN MET IN THE SOUTH TEXAS AREA?
Yes, as the medical community, health food industry and “crunchy” community spread the word about the effects of gluten and how a gluten-free lifestyle can help those like me, more people are realizing that they too have gluten “issues.” It has become more acceptable to be gluten-free. Because of this, there has been a huge increase in the amount of gluten-free options available in the grocery stores and on restaurant menus. The problem is, they are still pre-packaged foods which contain preservatives and other added ingredients. There is also a problem with cross-contamination or lack of knowledge in restaurants. You have to go to San Antonio to find a bakery that is exclusively gluten-free. HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A CHEF, OR DID YOU LEAN TOWARD THE CAREER LATER IN LIFE, WHEN MOTIVATED BY A LARGER GOAL?

WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO BEGIN SELLING GLUTEN-FREE GOODS?
If you lead a gluten-free lifestyle, you know how hard it is to find fresh baked goods that actually taste good. The prepackaged items available in the stores can also be full of preservatives. I saw a need for fresh, soft, sandwich-size bread and began working on recipes that would fill that void. I got tired of eating burgers and sandwiches without a bun or bread, so I started making my own. You can buy gluten-free bread at the local stores, but it is usually frozen, stiff, half the size of a normal sandwich, and quite costly. This is beginning to improve, but there is still a long way to go. I have led a gluten-free lifestyle for over nine years. My three adult daughters and four of my six grandchildren are

I was raised in the kitchen. My parents owned a soul food buffet in Los Angles when I was young. I started working in the kitchen with my step-father when I was 15 years old. He had a scratch kitchen and that is how I learned to cook. From there I worked in a fresh fish market restaurant on Redondo Beach pier. I moved from there to learn the art of high-end, large scale banquets with Marriott Hotels. Since then I have worked in a variety of restaurants, conference centers and colleges creating food from scratch for large volumes of people. HOW HAVE YOU PERCEIVED YOUR SMALL BUSINESS’ IMPACT ON THE COASTAL BEND COMMUNITY?
This is a hard question to answer. While there is still a need for fresh, high quality gluten-free baked goods here in the Coastal Bend, it is hard to maintain a business based solely on gluten-free. I still work full-time at Del Mar College creating food for the students and staff, so I only had one day a week to bake. I also did not have many venues to sell my products. Creating high quality baked goods is expensive, so it costs the customer more to purchase them. But they are worth it. I believe if I brought my experience and knowledge to a restaurant that was willing to adapt its menu, it would be very successful. Wouldn’t it be great to go to a restaurant with your family and not have to worry about everyone’s food allergies?

CORPUS CHRISTI HOSTS YOUTH SAILING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, BRINGING THE BEST OF THE BEST IN YOUTH SAILING TO CORPUS CHRISTI BAY.
O
ur Sparkling City by the Sea will soon be able to show off our bay’s amazing offshore breezes that make us a premier destination for windsurfing, kiteboarding, and sailing. For the first time in its storied history, the Corpus Christi Yacht Club will host the 48th Youth Sailing World Championships from July 14 - 21. The event, which World Sailing regards as one of the most important regattas, will feature 387 competitors representing 65 countries. This is not the first time that Corpus Christi has been chosen for a world-class sailing event. Over the last two decades, the city has hosted seven different international sailing events and will host the 2019 Etchells Worlds next year. Corpus Christi was chosen for the Youth World Sailing Championships in November 2014 at the annual World Sailing meeting in Spain. We competed with six other countries in our bid to win this event. Many years have passed since this competition was last held in the United States. “With our consistent sea breeze, easy access to the sailing area, and lack of marine traffic, Corpus Christi is a great venue for an event of this size and scope,” says Mark Foster, a Corpus Christi native who is chairing the event with Corpus Christi Yacht Club’s Sandra Carl. Foster is also a U.S. Sailing Team member and World Champion. Carl adds, “We are looking forward to the opportunity to see these amazing young people compete in this sport at the highest level.” The event resembles the Olympic Games in several
ways. Each country is allowed one team per event and has its own qualification series for the championships. Most countries select representatives based on results from two or three events over the past year. This regatta will feature Olympic style opening and closing ceremonies including a “Parade of Nations,” South Texas mariachis, live country music, and barbeque with all the fixings. The sailors, ranging in age from 12 to 19, will sail nine classes of watercraft, including RS: X Windsurfer, Laser Radial, 29er, I420, and Nacra 15. The boats will be launched from McGee Beach twice a day. The morning group will leave around 10 a.m., and the afternoon group will follow at about 2 p.m. The races take place on Corpus Christi Bay. McGee Beach and the T-heads at the Corpus Christi Marina offer the best spectator views. Sailing and boating enthusiasts from across the world will be tuning in to the event, which will be broadcast with live updates on all of the World Sailing media channels including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. This year’s Youth Worlds is special for another important reason. It’s the first World Sailing Championship with a focus on sustainability and ocean conservation. The Corpus Christi Yacht Club has partnered with 11th Hour Racing, whose mission is to “establish strategic partnerships within the sailing and maritime communities to promote collaborative, systemic change benefiting the health of our ocean, one degree at a time.” As part of this sustainability Initiative, the regatta will be plastic free and include educational opportunities and beach cleanups. thebendmag.com

Elizabeth Kratzig, who grew up in Corpus Christi and represented Corpus in the Youth Sailing Worlds in 1991, heads up the Green Team, which is responsible for the sustainable regatta initiatives. “By following environmentally sustainable practices at this regatta and through educational activities, the Green Team hopes to promote a passion for protecting our oceans in competitors, volunteers and the South Texas community.” Locals can get in on the action with a variety of downtown events. The Art Center of Corpus Christi will feature environmentally themed art and interactive exhibits. The Science of Essential Oils DIY herbal blends with essential oil classes By: Kirby Tello Photos by: Rachel Benavides

aDonna Calhoun, a surgical first assistant with American Surgical Professionals, is no stranger to modern medicine. However, her passion for alternative medicine is shifting the medicinal landscape within our community.
Calhoun started Archer Soapworks & Apothecary in 2015, but she started laying the company’s foundation long before she dreamed of it becoming a business. Her love for creating things, including medicine, with her own two hands had always felt empowering and intriguing. But the turning point came when she suffered a massive bruise on her forearm after an archery lesson. Remembering that arnica, a plant from the daisy family, is used medicinally to treat bruises, she went home and

concocted a beeswax and arnica salve to soothe her injury. Just like that, her company was born! Although Archer Soapworks & Apothecary stocks many healing products, essential oils are what they do best. In fact, they specialize in customized synergistic blends catering to people of all ages. One thing to note when experimenting with oils is the importance of safety. With the trendiness of herbalism skyrocketing, it is Calhoun’s mission to provide in-depth education on essential oil usage. If someone doesn’t know the correct way to blend oils, usage might wind up being more harmful than helpful. That is how the company’s Basics of Herbalism Series began. The series consists of four classes where students take a deep dive into the history of herbalism and learn about common misconceptions and assumptions. Two of the classes specifically focus on how to choose essential oils and why using a carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil, is a must in terms of safety. Calhoun, who studies Clinical Herbalism at Herbalism Academy, hosts

Being armed with the knowledge of the safe application of essential oils puts clients in the driver’s seat of their health by using an easy, daily approach to self-care. HEALTH / MEDICAL MATTERS must-sees among hundreds of activities at our city’s largest health fair. This annual event owes its success to the tremendous participation from area hospitals, businesses, and gyms. According to Dr. Anderson, this year’s participating organizations include Driscoll Health Plan, Superior Health Plan, South Texas Family Planning & Health Corporation, Amistad Community Health Center, Almouie Pediatrics, Children’s Clinic of the Coastal Bend, and CHRISTUS Spohn, among others. Services range from vaccinations to disease prevention information.

nly one fair in Corpus Christi offers cholesterol screenings, immunizations, and bicycle helmet fittings as the main attractions. The annual Nueces County Medical Society (NCMS) Health Fair will be held August 11 at the American Bank Center from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. The event’s 2018 chairperson, Dr. Lori Anderson, a pediatrician at Amistad Community Health Center, is passionate about our community’s health. She loves how the fair exposes residents to a wide spectrum of health and wellness services. “It’s a great service to provide for our community. We are able to show or remind everyone what health services are available in our community,” Dr. Anderson explains. “People learn how to improve their health or where to go if they need help.” Dr. Anderson is one of many physicians involved in the event. In fact, each year, physicians are hands-on with planning and day-of activities. The Ask the Doctors booth offers one-on-one answers to all types of health questions. This Q&A booth is only one of the

Johanna Mettlach, MSN, RN is an Employee Health Nurse Navigator in the CHRISTUS Spohn Health Network Wellness Program. As longtime health fair participants, the Health Network Wellness team knows the life-saving importance of this event. “It’s important for people to get screenings because many diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure can be silent, meaning they have no symptoms. Unfortunately, sometimes people don’t know they have a problem until they end up in the ER.” As Mettlach reminds us, “Our health is our most precious resource.” Excited about her 2nd year at the NCMS Health Fair, Christie Perez, Wellness Coordinator in the CHRISTUS Spohn Health Network, says the fair provides a critical tool in the fight against disease – early detection. “Health screenings can identify issues before they become serious,” explains Perez. “They are very effective and play a major role in your health. Preventative care is significant to your overall health; it is the key to a healthier you!” Dr. Anderson and the entire planning committee are thrilled about the valuable resources offered to Coastal Bend residents. “This is a great program, and it’s also like a tradition,” says Anderson. “We want a lot of involvement, so we’ve removed barriers like cost.” In fact, the 52nd Annual NCMS Health Fair features free admission, free parking, and free physicals. For a Saturday that’s equal parts fun and healthy, mark your calendars for the Nueces County Medical Society Health Fair.

HEALTH / MEET THE DOCTOR
“I don’t give up. I just don’t give up,” says Dr. Pollard. Dr. Pollard was born and raised in Corpus Christi and graduated from IWA Academy. She completed Medical School at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and was one of two Fellows in the second graduating class of the University of Texas Health Science Center - San Antonio. After a residency at the Harlem Hospital Center’s Sickle Cell Clinic, she almost took a job in Los Angeles before finding out her dad had Lymphoma and came back home to Corpus Christi in 1987 to help treat him. He went on to live for ten more years. Dr. Pollard has helped patients in the Coastal Bend fight against cancer for over 30 years. She finds joy in the little victories along the way, such as helping patients get access to medications they need, even when they are denied by their insurance.

Fighting the Good Fight Dr. Ester Pollard once learned a valuable lesson in perseverance

fter a horrible accident, Dr. Ester Pollard found herself face to face with a doctor who wanted to remove her leg. She sought out a second opinion and found a doctor in Houston who would reconstruct it. It took seven surgeries and two years of seeing patients in a wheelchair before she was back on her feet.
“It was really humiliating to see patients in a wheelchair, because I am really active,” said Dr. Pollard. One day, while treating a patient for testicular cancer, she was feeling down on herself for not being able to walk. The young man gracefully offered to trade places with her, and mentioned she was actually more effective treating him because of the wheelchair. It was in that moment her whole philosophy on treating patients changed.
66 The Bend
“The biggest challenge is helping patients get the funds they need for medication and therapy,” says Dr. Pollard. “There are other options out there, including Immunotherapy.” She will connect patients to different grants available to help get the testing they need to qualify for new ways to fight cancer. Also, Dr. Pollard is connected with physicians across the state, and when patients can’t get treatment for whatever reason, she connects with other doctors to find the right physician for them to get started with their treatment. At least a quarter of the year, Dr. Pollard will have a resident with her. She likes teaching and loves to travel. She has helped breast cancer patients in the Dominican Republic who do not have access to the level of care available here in the United States. She also heads up two hospices, taking care of patients from front to back. Dr. Pollard does everything she can to fight for her patients, but she knows her limits. “I will offer the patient who has a reasonable performance status another option. You could go to Houston, you could go to Dallas, you could go to San Antonio,” says Dr. Pollard. Her fierce passion for helping others has allowed her to care for many here in the Coastal Bend and her will to keep pushing forward is an inspiration to all.

Bart Braselton
Local Legacy
A
s avid Bend Magazine readers voted for their favorite local Coastal Bend businesses, Braselton was blessed to be busy racking up our own list of top industry and local community organizations that have chosen us as one of their “favorites.” As the largest homebuilder south of San Antonio, we are proud of being named as a national “Housing Giant” by Professional Builder Magazine, as well as recognition by Builder Magazine in their “Next 100,” a list of the largest homebuilders in the nation. But the recognition for our commitment to stewardship of the environment is something we are even more proud of. From national organizations, we have received the Energy Star High Performance Award, the Environments for Living Diamond Award, and locally, we were honored with the Coastal Bend Bays Foundation Environmental Stewardship Award. Braselton is the first builder to ever be so honored by the Bays Foundation. Braselton Homes is also proud to top our own Builder’s “Locals List,” as one the most awarded homebuilders in the Corpus Christi area. Including Parade of Homes, GreenBuilding, and other recognitions, we have received scores of awards over the last few years. Industry awards are a great honor and remind us that our hard work building beautiful homes and neighborhoods is important, but we also take our commitment to our local community very seriously. So, it is doubly an honor for us to receive recognition for our efforts to help those that need help the most. Through our “Community Builder” programs, we support key charities and ministries, throughout the Coastal Bend.
Mentoring our youth and giving them the tools they need to succeed is all part of building the fabric of our community. Our work in this area has been such a rewarding experience. We are proud to sponsor the ECF Community Center’s tutoring and after school programs for inner-city children, as well as to work with “Fish for Life,” a Christian organization that partners with the local juvenile justice system to mentor at-risk youth, demonstrating the love of Christ and building a better future for our city. We also have made a commitment to the most vulnerable in our community, women and children who have been abused by the sex trafficking industry. We were honored to sponsor the New Life Refuge Ministry’s Celebration of Courage and to work with them to build a home for those rescued from this horrible experience. The organization graciously dubbed it “The Braselton Home,” making it the Braselton Home we are most proud of building. We are also happy to be the main sponsor of new housing for women and children at the Salvation Army’s upcoming Center of Hope, which will provide a long-term stay for moms with kids. We’d like to thank The Bend for the Local’s List, which gives us all the opportunity to vote for our favorite local businesses, allowing so many of them to shine. There’s such an amazing and supportive community here in the Coastal Bend, and we are so pleased to have been a part of it for three generations. Together, we’re all building a bright future for our area!
Bart Braselton is the Executive Vice President of Braselton Homes, the Coastal Bend’s oldest and largest Homebuilder and Neighborhood Developer. Born and raised in Corpus Christi, Bart is the third generation of The Braselton family building in the Bay Area. Returning to Corpus Christi after earning a BBA in Finance, as well as a second degree in Real Estate, from the University of Texas, at Austin, Braselton began working in the family business as a construction superintendent. Since then, Braselton Homes has won numerous local, state, and national awards, including the Energy Star Leadership in Housing Award, as well as the Environments for Living Diamond Award for Energy Efficiency. And, the company has grown into one of the Nation’ s Largest Homebuilders, earning consistent rankings in the annual lists compiled by both Professional Builder, as well as Builder Magazine. Bart, a graduate of Leadership Corpus Christi Class 18, has served on numerous local community and business boards, including the Coastal Bend Green Built Initiative, Bay Area Smart Growth, and the Police Foundation. Presently, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Community Development Corporation, the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce, the Builders Association and the Corpus Christi Business and Job Development Corporation. Braselton and his wife, Michelle have 2 young children at home, and are active, with Braselton Homes, in community and church organizations throughout the city, including the American Heart Association, the ECF Community Center, and the Food Bank.

ophistication abounds at the first sight of Lunette Jones’ home in Bessar Park, one of Corpus Christi’s premiere neighborhoods. The peaked urn pediment atop the front door frame adds exquisite detail and character to the entrance. And the brick stairway, flanked by swirling wrought iron handrails, leads guests into a realm of old fashioned style and architectural bliss. It’s no surprise that Lunette, owner of Lunette Jones Interiors, is a well-rounded interior designer with a broad knowledge of real estate. She showcases her passion for design throughout her home. Lunette has lived in 15 different homes in various places including California, Mississippi, and France. Accustomed to lush greenery, she struggled between buying a house by the bay or on the island. In the end, she chose the two-story beauty she now calls home. Initially, she was not fond of the house because the dark interior was draped

in dreary browns and grays. However, the open floor plan showed potential, and she knew she could work magic with her decorating talents. Now that her home is filled with fresh, light colors, it offers an inviting atmosphere. Heirlooms placed throughout the home add to the warm aesthetic. Framed family memories arranged in a vignette and her son-in-law’s gorgeous, intricate artwork lend a more modern touch to the old-fashioned flair. Lunette also has a passion for Parisian culture. She and her husband once owned a Gîte, which is a small vacation home, in France. They renovated each room with furniture and decorative pieces carefully selected from antique fairs and online shops. If there is one thing Lunette swears by, it is her ability to find great decorative pieces for any style of décor and any given budget. “Give me a budget, and I can make a house feel like a home,” she says. Several pieces, acquired during her time in France, California, and Mississippi, traveled back with her to Texas, bringing a sentimental value that permeates her home’s relaxing vibe. Among the pieces she’s kept is an old wrought iron fireplace screen from the 1800s. She now uses it at the front entrance as a wall table with a marble top and a mirror. Although modernizing antiques with spray paint is a popular trend, Lunette prefers to let the antique’s natural beauty speak for itself. The second floor features a generously sized master suite with an abundance of closet space, a fireplace, additional bedrooms, and a washroom with modern appliances and a large utility sink. There is
even a bedroom personalized specifically for much treasured visits from her grandchildren. The spectacular kitchen is the only room in the house she didn’t change. It had already been updated with a clean shade of white, granite countertops, and high-end stainless steel appliances before the Joneses purchased the house. If the modern look and feel of the kitchen isn’t enough, a nearby family room, surrounded by windows, offers the perfect view of the courtyard style backyard. Lunette credits her landscape designer, Robin Marcoux, for making her vision a reality by turning the courtyard into a French garden with a coastal twist. One of the most prominent features of the stylish backyard getaway is an exquisitely decorated guesthouse. The vividly colored, multi-patterned tile floors in this charming abode exude California vibes. The Joneses' backyard also has an outdoor kitchen and custom pool, providing an entertainment area and a place to unwind after a long day. “Although the South Texas heat can be tough to handle, the evenings are filled with a fresh, cool breeze that makes this area enjoyable to host small get-togethers,” Lunette says. She also added a few planters along the fence to give a simple yet sophisticated coastal feeling to her sparkling pool. Although Lunette is happy with the renovations she’s made in her home, the eager designer is up for any changes that present themselves. Anyone who enters the Jones’ home can attest to the endless possibilities to come!

The Essential Culinary Herbs for Summer Grow beautiful container plants all summer long with these helpful tips By: Justin Butts Photo by: Rachel Benavides
ESSENTIAL KITCHEN HERBS FOR SUMMER -BASIL: Space 12” to 15” apart; grows bushy up to 36” tall. Easy to grow. Best varieties are Italian, sweet, and Thai. Lemon basil can become pungent. Remove blooms and routinely harvest upper leaves to stimulate leaf growth and bushiness. -OREGANO: Space 15” apart. Greek oregano has smaller leaves, grows up to 15” tall. Cuban oregano has larger leaves, grows taller, with slightly different flavor. -MINT: Space 12” apart. Easy to grow, aggressive ground cover—once established will spread rapidly. Best varieties are spearmint, peppermint, apple, orange, and pineapple. -THYME: Space 12” apart. Upright thyme grows up to 15” tall; creeping thyme spreads like a ground cover. Delicate plant until established. Harvest by clipping top quarter of stems to promote growth. -ROSEMARY: Space 18” apart. Shrub grows up to 4’ tall. Baby the plant for a few months, but once established, it is nearly indestructible. Harvest often to promote growth. -SAGE: Space 18” apart. Plants grow up to 24” tall. Harvest lightly in first year until established. There are many colorful and tasty sage varieties. Pinch any blooms to concentrate flavor in leaves.
T
he kitchen herb garden is an essential tool for the home chef. Herbs bring flavor, nutrition, and even medicinal properties to your cooking. Best of all, they are beautiful and easy to grow!
A small 4’x8’ bed close to the kitchen door is plenty of space for an herb garden. Plant herbs in rich, well-tilled, well-drained soil. Use high-quality organic compost as fertilizer. Herbs emit powerful natural aromas to repel pests. No pesticides are necessary for herbs grown in healthy soil. Most herbs are difficult to start from seed. Plant well grown transplants into the soil. Dill, cilantro, and parsley are cool weather herbs; save them for the fall. This month, plant the heat-loving herbs listed and they will grow through summer, fall, and even winter (if there is not a freeze or heavy frost). These herbs are perennials, which means they will grow for two years or longer. Once established, harvest the leaves as desired. The more you harvest, the lusher the plants grow! These herbs require full sun (7 to 8 hours per day), but they prefer evening shade in the hottest part of summer to ease heat stress.
Water the soil beneath the herbs when it is mostly, but not completely, dried out—usually three times per week during summer. It is imperative to heavily mulch the bed (at least 4 inches thick) with raked-up native leaves to insulate the soil and prevent weeds.

-MEXICAN MINT MARIGOLD: Space 12” to 15” apart. Grows to 24” or higher. The anise-like flavor is similar to tarragon. Easy to grow, lush, and covered with beautiful yellow flowers. -LEMONGRASS: Space 36” apart. Grows up to 36” tall, like a large clump of grass. Essential for Asian dishes. To harvest, clip several stalks of grass at base.

A Pun for Your Thoughts Angelica Demiris has coupled wit and creativity to make a business that shares laughter and connects people together By: Alexa Alley Photos contributed by:Rachel Benavides
A
ngelica Demiris’s love of laughter led to the creation of ACouplePuns, a greeting card business based on puns and her own illustrations. “Ever since I was a kid, I have always been the comedian of my friends and family. So for me to turn my love for laughter into a business comes to no surprise to those who know me,” Demiris says. It all started when she and her fiancé were dating long distance. They would communicate with puns throughout the day. “It made the distance seem shorter because we were always laughing and seeking out fun puns or wordplay to share,” she says, reminiscing. When they did see each other, she would take photos of him and write clever captions about what he was doing or holding. Once she began sharing the captioned photos on social media, her friends encouraged her to expand on her artsy inclinations. That’s how ACouplePuns was born. After moving to Corpus Christi from the East Coast, Demiris had to work hard to make Corpus feel like home. “I had to really push myself out of my comfort zone. It’s that feeling that inspired me to start something I could take with me wherever I end up, utilizing my talents and my professional experience,” she says.
82 The Bend
Her professional marketing experience helped her grow ACouplePuns into the successful business it is today. “I started this knowing how to turn a creative idea into something tangible,” she says. Ever since the summer of 2017, she has been illustrating greeting cards and writing “punny” captions to go with them. Some of the illustrations come from her imagination, while others are photos from interesting places. Describing her design process, Demiris says, “Whenever I am planning a trip, I scope out popular blogs and find out where the best murals or fun photo-ops are, and I’ll design my cards specifically for a trip I plan to take.” ACouplePuns has taken off since launching in the summer of 2017. Demiris exhibits her greeting cards at one to two markets every month, including SXSW in Austin this past March. Locally, you can purchase the cards at the Texas Surf Museum’s gift shop or online through her website and Etsy shop. She considers it a gift to be able to collaborate with other small businesses. “Whether it’s through a card or through social media, this is a medium for me to connect and share my love for laughter and art. And I hope to continue to do that.” ” Contact: acouplepuns.com, @ACouplePuns Can Be Purchased at: Texas Surf Museum, 309 N. Water St., Corpus Christi, TX 78401

New Orleans Flare Transforming a coastal home into the French Quarters for the sake of love

his lovely bride and groom wanted to bring New Orleans to Corpus Christi for their wedding. They cherish the Crescent City and wished to make it the center of their nuptials. From the food to the décor to the music, a New Orleans French Quarter atmosphere dazzled all night long.
rade to the backyard reception for dinner and dancing. Luxurious gold velvet linens and compotes overflowing with flowers accented the tables. Lights twinkled beneath the magnolia trees, and the brass band continued to play as guests mingled, sipped on drinks, and nibbled on appetizers.
The beautiful bride looked gorgeous in a striking purple gown paired with green velvet shoes. The bridesmaids wore black dresses accessorized with brightly colored tassel earrings. The hand dyed ribbons around the oversized bouquets fluttered freely in the coastal breeze.
A delicious white cake and, of course, King’s Cake, followed an authentic New Orleans style dinner. The dancing continued into the night, and both the happy couple and their guests reveled in every moment of this “une belle nuit.”
Getting married at their home made the event intimate and personal. Friends and family from far and near arrived to witness this next step in the happy couple’s love story. They transformed their front yard into the French Quarter with exquisite silk tents and decorative wooden chairs lining the sidewalk for family seating. Abundant arrangements of ferns, purple hydrangeas, and magnolias turned the front porch into the perfect setting for the ceremony. Guests gathered under the tents where they were greeted with champagne spritzers and a handkerchief (for any happy tears). After the bride and groom kissed, the brass band led everyone in a pa-

Effective prostate cancer treatment with minimal or no side effects STEPHEN G. CHUN, MD Many patients choose proton therapy over conventional radiation since it’s less invasive and spares surrounding tissue and organs. Patients can usually maintain their quality of life, and many can return to work the same day as treatment. Side effects, such as incontinence, are minimal to none. MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center’s experts can precisely target and deliver high radiation doses to kill cancerous cells in the prostate. Surrounding healthy tissues and vital organs, such as the bladder and
rectum, are spared from extra radiation, resulting in less rectal, genitourinary, and gastrointestinal complications. Fortunately, if found early, prostate cancer has a five-year survival rate of approximately 99 percent. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United States and is the second leading cause of death from cancer in men. Risk factors include being 65 or older, a family history of prostate cancer, obesity, and being African American.

GRASS-FED STEAK WITH SUMMER VEGETABLES Serves 2 Prep time: 3 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes INGREDIENTS:
SKILLET CHICKEN AND RICE
DIRECTIONS:
Serves 4-6
Preheat oven to 375°F. Heat large cast iron skillet (recommend 13-15” in diameter) over medium-high heat. Once you are only able to hold your hand over the skillet for less than three seconds, add olive oil, onion and peppers. Cook for about 5 minutes and set onions and peppers aside on a clean plate. Return skillet to heat.
Prep time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour INGREDIENTS: 2 tbsp olive oil, plus 2 additional tbsp 1 large onion, sliced 2 sweet peppers, seeded and sliced 1 bone-in whole chicken with skin on, broken down into parts 1 tsp paprika 3/4 tsp cumin 1-2 tsp salt ¼ tsp cayenne 5 sprigs tarragon (or ½ tsp dried tarragon) 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup uncooked basmati rice 2 - 2 1/4 cups chicken broth or stock 2 bay leaves Freshly squeezed lime, to taste
94 The Bend
Season chicken with paprika, cumin, cayenne, and salt (to taste). Add additional olive oil to skillet, and cook in batches to avoid crowding. Cook chicken for 6-7 minutes on each side. (Add tarragon at this time if using dried tarragon.) Set chicken aside. Add garlic and rice to skillet and cook for 1 minute, stirring frequently. Add chicken broth to skillet and reduce to low heat. Simmer rice for 10 minutes, until most of the liquid is absorbed. If necessary, add additional broth at this time. Return onion, peppers, and chicken to skillet, along with bay leaves and fresh tarragon. Cover skillet with an ovenproof lid or aluminum foil. Place skillet in the oven and cook for 30-40 minutes until juices from chicken run clear. Squeeze lime over chicken and rice and serve.
1-2 lb grass-fed beefsteak (recommend at least 1” in thickness) at room temperature Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste 2 corn cobs with husks removed, sliced horizontally 2 zucchini, sliced into spears 4 tbsp butter 4 cloves garlic Chimichurri sauce (see below) DIRECTIONS: Prepare chimichurri sauce (see below). Preheat seasoned cast iron skillet on high heat. Season steak liberally with salt and freshly ground pepper. Cook steak for about four minutes on each side for medium rare. Sprinkle salt and pepper over vegetables and add them to the pan while steak cooks, turning frequently to prevent burning. Remove steak and allow to rest for about ten minutes. Continue to cook vegetables until tender and lightly charred on all sides. Set vegetables aside and reduce heat to low. Add butter and garlic to skillet, scraping bottom of pan to release flavorful bits. To serve, drizzle steak with garlic butter and a spoonful of chimichurri sauce.

CHIMICHURRI
2 tbsp sugar
Serves 2
1 tbsp all-purpose flour
Prep time: 5 minutes
Juice of 1 lemon
INGREDIENTS:
Topping:
1 bunch fresh parsley (about 2 ounces)
½ cup flour
1/3 cup red wine vinegar
½ cup brown sugar
4 garlic cloves
4 tbsp butter
¾ tsp salt
DIRECTIONS:
½ tsp red pepper flakes
Preheat oven to 350°F.
½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
In a medium-sized bowl, combine topping ingredients with your fingers or a pastry blender until the mixture forms pea-sized crumbles.
DIRECTIONS: In a blender or food processor, pulse parsley, vinegar, garlic, salt and red pepper flakes until smooth. With the blender on, add olive oil in a slow, steady stream until well incorporated. Let flavors meld for 20 minutes before serving. Chimichurri will keep in an airtight container for one week.
BERRY SKILLET CRUMBLE Serves 6 Prep time: 3 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes INGREDIENTS: 2 pints fresh berries (we used raspberries)
½ cup rolled oats
Heat two small cast iron skillets (recommend 6-inch diameter) over medium heat. Add 1 pint of berries to each skillet and stir in sugar, flour, and lemon until well blended. Stir occasionally and cook until berries have reduced and a sauce has formed (about 5-7 minutes). Spoon topping onto both berry mixtures and bake for 10-15 minutes until the crust is a nice golden brown. Best served warm, right out of the skillet.

With an easygoing atmosphere and plenty of drinks to choose from, D’Lounge should be on your summer drink list

lipping inside the cool, calm, and darkened D’Lounge Sushi Bar on a hot summer day is a refreshing escape from the chaotic outside world.
“It’s laid-back and a place to get away. Life is so hectic outside,” says Lyly Nguyen Le, who has owned D’Lounge and the restaurant to which it is attached, the Hu Dat Noodle House, for 12 years.

One-of-a-kind mixed drinks, created by Lyly Nguyen Le and her bartending staff, await visitors. Delicious Asian Tapas, such as homemade egg rolls and sauces, also entice customers. For sushi lovers, the Maui Eel roll, consisting of tempura fried eel, mango, cream cheese, and blackened sauce toppings, is another tasty treat. According to Le, most of her dishes, served both in the restaurant and the bar, are made from scratch each day. But it’s the D’Lounge version of the Long Island Iced Tea, called the Corpus Christi Iced Tea, which impresses people most. Served in a high ball glass with a wedge of lime, its
top shelf ingredients set it apart from similar drinks. “We want Corpus Christi to have the best, and we have offered that for the past 12 years,” she says. Another drink, the Ling Ling, contains three Malibu Rums: pineapple, coconut and cranberry. A splash of pineapple and cranberry juices combined with the rum blend results in a light, fruity cocktail that packs a powerful punch. The businesses are located in the Saratoga Town Center at the intersection of Staples Street and Saratoga Boulevard. There are additional locations in Calallen and Portland. The first location was opened in Rockport in 1993, but was closed because of Hurricane Harvey damage. Le expects to re-open in six months to a year.

Proton therapy cancer treatment is less toxic with fewer side effects, research shows. STEVEN J. FRANK, MD Research conducted at The University of Texas MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center shows that proton therapy treatment can have fewer negative side effects than traditional radiation, reducing toxicity and the need for feeding tubes in throat cancer (oropharyngeal carcinoma) patients by up to 50 percent. Unlike traditional radiation, proton therapy is especially well-suited for patients with the most complicated tumors. Layer by layer, it precisely paints protons onto difficult-to-reach tumors in the head and neck, including the base of the tongue and tonsils, sparing surrounding healthy tissue from damage.
Sparing healthy tissue in this way produces important quality of life outcomes as it preserves neurocognitive function, swallowing ability, vision, hearing, taste and speech. Other benefits may include fewer and less intense side effects such as vomiting, nausea, hearing problems, and inflammation and ulceration of the digestive tract. Patients can usually maintain their quality of life, and many can return to work the same day as treatment. For these reasons, many patients choose proton therapy over conventional radiation.
If you would like more information about the MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center, please call 1-866-632-4782 or visit us at MDAndersonProton.com/HeadAndNeck

hen walking into Shabu Shabu Hot Pot and Grill for the first time, it’s hard not to feel like you’re in an upscale restaurant in Austin or Las Vegas. The atmosphere and cuisine are altogether different from any other eatery in Corpus Christi. Shabu Shabu Hot Pot and Grill is the passion project and dream of owner Lenny Le and his two business partners, Peter Phat Nguyen and Huy Nguyen. The three men’s wives have lovingly nicknamed them The Three Amigos. The restaurant, born from Lenny Le’s love of soups, opened its doors in March 2018, bringing a first-of-its-kind experience to the city. According to Lyly Nguyen Le, co-owner, and wife of Lenny Le, that’s the whole point. “You come in, you feel the aura, and you take your time. It’s not going to be fast food, so don’t expect to be done quickly,” says Le. “It’s not just about eating; it’s the experience.”
104 The Bend
The idea of the hot pot is simple. You build your own pot by using a three-step process beginning with choosing your broth. Next select your protein; choices include the ever-popular ribeye or pork options and the more adventurous squid. For the third step, add noodles or rice. Soba noodles are a customer favorite. After the hot pot is delivered to the table, it is up to the customer to cook it. Shabu Shabu hopes that Coastal Bend residents will embrace this unique dining experience when they realize how easy and relaxing it is. “If you love soup, you’ll love this. And it really isn’t that hard,” says Le. “All you have to do is swish, swish your meats (in the broth) -- then you’re done.” From fresh ingredients to the potential for a wholly new experience, Shabu Shabu Hot Pot and Grill is already making a lasting impression on the Corpus Christi food scene. And that’s what matters most to Le and family. “We are dedicated to making sure that everything is fresh, tasty, and consistent. The majority of people don’t know what Shabu Shabu is yet. We just have to take our time and teach them,” says Le. “And what we’re finding out is that the people are willing.” Contact: 6042 S.P.I.D., Corpus Christi, TX 78412 (361) 500-4950 shabucc.com

onstructed in 1929, the Ritz Theatre has brought culture and entertainment to Corpus Christi for 57 years. Its Spanish Renaissance design makes it a towering presence on Chaparral Street, one of our city’s main commercial areas in the early 1900s.
The theater’s interior, designed in the popular “atmospheric” style, features a blue sky with twinkling stars, giving theater goers the illusion of being seated beneath an open sky in an exotic Spanish courtyard. Changes have been made to the Ritz over the decades. A proscenium arch originally framed the stage, but it was removed when the size of the movie

screen increased. During World War II, bands came to the theater to entertain local military personnel. When the movies ended in 1972, the Ritz transitioned to hosting concerts, including Metallica and other big names. Since its closure in 1989, the vacant Ritz has been awaiting its next phase. Preservation Texas named the Ritz one of the Most Endangered Historic Places in 2012. Visiting a restored atmospheric theater takes you back to another time—something that would be amazing to experience in our own downtown. By supporting the Ritz, we can all have a part in ushering this magnificent theater into her next act.
