THE SPARKLING CITY It’s summertime in the Coastal Bend. Summer is really the time of year that we shine brightest, or sparkle as they say. The water glistens brighter, the seafood tastes a bit fresher and the water is a little warmer. You start to see unfamiliar faces around town and it gets difficult to find parking on the beach because this is the place that everyone wants to be for summertime! If you are new to the area or just visiting this summer, maybe you are unfamiliar with the term “The Sparkling City by the Sea,” one of Corpus Christi’s trademark slogans. It’s something you have to experience for yourself in order to really understand. I remember the first time I was cruising down Ocean Dr. early one morning on the way to work when I looked out on the water and literally saw the Corpus Christi Bay sparkling. It was truly a sublime feeling and continues to be each time. However, over the past few months, I have grown a new understanding for the term. From planning to production, it was with heavy hearts and between many thoughts and prayers that we created this summer edition. News of flooding and the horrible tragedies that occurred were widespread across local and national news outlets. Our community has been deeply affected; it’s been difficult for many to carry on with everyday life through this period of grieving. The Bend Magazine is not a breaking news outlet, but there is something I wanted to share. Over the past few months, what I have seen has again left me in awe at how special this place truly is. With each tragedy, the people in this city have selflessly given of themselves and have rallied to support those in need. If a family is hurting, the community hurts with them. Corpus Christi is more than a city, it’s a community that cares for one another. Corpus Christi is a city that sparkles inside and out. It is not only a place I would hope to experience during summertime. It’s a place I am glad to experience and be a part of all the time.

HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS TOUR JULY 20TH

WADE BOWEN AND RANDY ROGERS WANT YOU TO GRAB A DRINK AND GET READY FOR A GOOD TIME. The longtime friends, and Texas Country stars, are bringing their Hold My Beer and Watch This Tour to Brewster Street Icehouse on July 20th in support of their new album of the same name Hold My Beer: Vol. 1. We caught up with Wade Bowen this month for a chat, who graciously took time out of his busy schedule promoting the new album, playing around Texas with Randy and spending time with his family, to talk about what it’s like making a record with one of his best friends:

IF YOU GO:

THE BEND: Do you get any time to enjoy Corpus Christi when you’re down here playing shows or do you have to get back on the tour bus and head to the next gig? WADE BOWEN: I really enjoy Corpus Christi, always have. I’ve been bringing my family down for years to enjoy the beaches and the restaurants. It’s a beautiful town and we always have such a blast! People really enjoy good music down there and they always have a lot of fun. THE BEND: What was your favorite part of making “Hold My Beer: Vol. 1” with Randy Rogers? WADE BOWEN: We’ve been doing these shows together for years and we were actually going to do a live acoustic recording, but then we just decided to go into the studio and record a couple of songs. (Hold My Beer: Vol. 1 was produced by the legendary Lloyd Maines.)

It sounded so good, we decided to do a whole record and it just kind of fell out of the sky. I think you can hear the camaraderie on this record and how much fun we have when we’re together. And the reaction has just been amazing. THE BEND: Well, since the record is called “Hold My Beer: Vol. 1” it begs to ask - when can we expect a Vol. 2? WADE BOWEN: I think it’s always in the works. We’ve got a lot of songs left over. We’ve still only done one show for this tour, so we’re going to tour through September and see where it goes. You know, I just released my own album last fall too, so it’s been crazy working two records at the same time. But it’s been really cool that this has become more than just a side project, with the record debuting on the Billboard Charts, it’s been a lot of fun.

START A CAREER HERE! If you’re reading this, chances are you live in this fine region we are proud to call home. Now, if that’s not enough in itself, maybe this will pique your interest. Corpus Christi was recently voted #6 in the top 10 places in America to start a career. With monthly median salaries starting at nearly $3,000 and median income at over $47,000, the study also ranked Corpus as the second best median income growth rate and the seventh best annual job growth rate. This, my fellow residents, puts us at #4 for overall professional opportunities. So keep on working, Corpus Christians, and spread the word – the money is good and the living is easy.

COMING THIS SUMMER,

ROCKPORT AS “DESTINATION ON THE RISE IN 2015” Trip Advisor has recently recognized Rockport as a top “Destination on the Rise in 2015.” The representative told Rockport/Fulton Chamber of Commerce staff that “Rockport showed an impressive increase in bookings within the last year and was praised by travelers for being a family-friendly destination with great beaches and playgrounds.” Trip Advisor’s goal was to discover 30 of the fastest-growing vacation rental destinations for this year. Rockport was identified as gaining popularity while offering vacationers something special, like the beaches and it’s unique blend of outdoor recreation, kid-friendly attractions, entertainment, culture, arts, history and more. For more information on the Rockport-Fulton area go to www.rockport-fulton.org or call the Visitor Center at 800-242-0071.

Q&A Where did the idea for “What’s up CC” begin? Leadership Corpus Christi Class 40 started the What’s up Corpus Christi? (WUCC) Calendar and application as a project back in 2012. The idea was to create a free calendar and Quality of Life application that could be a type of “Wiki” for Corpus Christi residents – a community run calendar for the community to help connect people to the great things happening in Corpus Christi. Since it’s impossible for one person to know about everything going on around town, this calendar allows businesses, individuals and organizations to submit their own events for free. So now, Corpus Christians have a website they can check at any given time to find out the full range of things happening--from arts and entertainment to festivals, family events, sports and recreation, volunteer opportunities, downtown events and more!

Leadership Corpus Christi Class 40 graduate is making sure Corpus Christians still know What’s Up.

22 the bend magazine

The mission of “What’s Up Corpus Christi?” is to be the most comprehensive, largest, and up-to-date human-edited event calendar and resource directory for Corpus Christi and the surrounding South Texas region. It highlights the many activities, events, and resources that make living and visiting coastal south Texas one of the best places in the United States. There are so many great activities and events going on in this beautiful city – and we just want to make sure that people know about all of these things!

What kind of response have you seen from the community? The calendar has been operational for about 3 years now – this is solely because of the awesome involvement of the community! The calendar only works if venues and individuals submit their events and utilize the calendar, so the fact that we’re still up and running 3 years later and the audience has only continued to grow, is a testament to the support of our community.

How does it work? WUCC is constructed and maintained by a diverse community of volunteer editors and the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The “What’s up Corpus Christi?” mobile app and event data is made available for free to anyone. Anyone can submit an event by clicking the “Submit an Event” link on the WhatsUpCC. org website. Users then input all of the event information, including date, time, location, description, contact information and even an event flier. Images uploaded should be 300 pixels high for best results. When posting events, we just ask that users ensure the image is their own organization or company logo or an event flier the organization has created. Then, it’s automatically posted to the website calendar, as well as feeds both the iPhone and Android apps! We also feature different events from the calendar on our Facebook page daily. WUCC is first and foremost a self-regulating community of net-citizens that basically runs itself. Through a system of self-governance, the

What is your ultimate goal for What’s Up CC?

WUCC volunteer editors manage the directory’s growth and development, and through a system of checks-and-balances, ensure the directory is of superior quality. What’s up Corpus Christi is an Open Source inspired, volunteer-managed initiative. The Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce Foundation administers it and is committed to keeping it a free and open resource via its social contract with the Web community and through seeking funding from local supporters. Regarding event submissions and content editors, there are now 300+ users entering events on the calendar – this includes individuals, venues, businesses, volunteers and different organizations trying to get the word out about their events.

Can anyone submit events and does it cost money? Because of great community supporters, such as this year’s Presenting Sponsor Bay Area Title Services, ANYONE can submit an event or use the calendar and it’s 100% FREE! The calendar is a program of the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization. The calendar is funded by local sponsorships and grants. To be a regular contributor to WUCC, you have the option of creating a user account that will be approved for you to submit events for any category of your choosing.

[the lifestyle magazine of the coastal bend}

Financial support is also key to ensuring we can keep this free tool up and running. And thanks to companies like Presenting Sponsor Bay Area Title, we’re able to continue administering this site! It should also be mentioned that community support is how we were able to develop the site in the first place – several companies stepped up to help donate the funds that got the site developed, including Valero, Sterling Personnel, Casa De Oro, and several more. These local companies understood that people living in the Coastal Bend want a wide variety of activities and entertainment options, so they invested in this Quality of Life application to help connect our residents with all of the great things to do in the Coastal Bend. GIVING BACK

A MORAL DUTY: SAVING THE SEASHORE’S BELOVED MARINE LIFE FROM EXTINCTION Words: Christina Boothe Photos: Renee C. Gage

The Padre Island National Seashore attempts to preserve Texas Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles and restore their population.

“Sea turtle nests are kind of like feast and famine.”

I

n the words of Crush, a beloved member of the Finding Nemo character crew, sea turtles “so totally rock!”

But everyone knows this. Around the world, people take great efforts to preserve these beloved marine friends. In Hawaii, sea turtles are considered sacred, and the slightest misstep involving a sea turtle can result in prison time. The adorable little creatures are very special. But, why? To begin with, they’re critically endangered. In 1947, the number of sea turtle nests was

With so much industrialization along the Coastal Bend, Corpus Christi and Port Aransas aren’t the safest places for sea turtles to come to shore, and it’s even less so for the hatchlings to try to shuffle their way back to the ocean.

The PINS has long been dedicated to the preservation of the critically endangered sea turtles. For the past 30 years, the organization has worked hard to locate and confiscate the nests, saving them from the tidal inundation and overwash of the raw Texas coast. The eggs are then taken to the PINS headquarters, where the turtles are watched closely and hatching estimates are given.

But the Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) is determined to change that. Dr. Donna Shaver, the Chief of the Division of Sea Turtle Science & Re-

And that’s where the public can get involved. “The turtles usually hatch 48-53 days after being laid,” Dr. Shaver explained. “We update the [PINS] website with a release window of five days, and we have a countdown clock. Releases are announced the day prior by 2 pm and start the next morning at 6:45 am in front of the Padre Island National Seashore Visitor’s Center.” The results of the updates are contingent upon the amount of nests they find. “It’s kind of like feast or famine,” Dr. Shaver laughed. “Just on Sunday we found 22 nests.” Dr. Shaver recommended that visitors from out of town come in at the beginning of that window. When turtles prepare to reenter the water, they go into a “frenzy” – a very active time of their young lives when it is pivotal to release them. If the frenzy happens early in the window, visitors who choose to come later will miss the release. Sometimes, the frenzies happen in the middle of the night, and the turtles must be released immediately, resulting in a cancellation of the public turtle release the next morning. “To ensure that the turtle release is still happening, we recommend that those hoping to attend call the Turtle Hotline before they leave in the mornings,” Dr. Shaver advised.

By the Numbers • The Padre Island National Seashore Division of Sea Turtle Science & Recovery is a part of a 30-year effort to safeguard sea turtle extinction. • Over 1,000 people have showed up to watch the turtles return to the sea before, and each release averages a couple hundred people from all over the state, country, and world. • There are 20 to 25 public sea turtle releases each year.

As noble and heroic as those at the PINS are, they cannot be everywhere at once. And with the turtle-nesting season being in its prime (female turtles typically nest between the months of April and June), they rely on your help to save the beloved marine life. “If you see a nesting turtle, don’t rush up to her,” Dr. Shaver cautioned. “Protect her from a healthy distance from cars and other potential threats. Call 1-866-Turtle-5 and a biologist will rush to your location to document the turtle’s nesting habits. Be sure to place something by the nest after she goes back to the water to mark where the eggs are.” As a community, it’s up to us to preserve the precious marine life around us. However, we also have the privilege of taking part in the miracles that nature provides us, like a turtle release at the crack of dawn on one of Texas’ most beautiful beachfronts. So get involved today. Don’t miss this miraculous race to the shoreline.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT 10 YEARS OF ROCK & ROLL

HE BUILT THIS CITY ON ROCK AND ROLL HOUSE OF ROCK TO CELEBRATE 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY WITH A BASH “There is a feeling of accomplishment when you can produce an event that creates memories that last a lifetime,” Lain said. “Everyone remembers their first concert, or the best show they ever saw.”

“We accomplished a lot of what we wanted, and we still have a laundry list of things we would like to get done.” “cool” local hangout that would draw top-tier bands. Lain signed on with them in 2005 and hit the ground running.

A

s the hard rock band ACDC famously said, “It’s a long way to the top if you wanna Rock n’ Roll.” Nobody knows this better than the team at House of Rock. What began as a dream to a small group of Corpus Christi club owners, they’ve grown it into a premier music venue in South Texas, drawing respected bands from around the state and country. In 2005, House of Rock opened its doors with a simple idea: Foster creativity in the community and become the hub on the Gulf Coast for local, regional and national touring bands. Ten years later, House of Rock is just that. Today, the House is known as a go-to place for art shows, concerts, charity benefits, and the home of the Corpus Christi 7-Day Film Festival. Co-owner Casey Lain is the face of this downtown creative locale, who, along with his partners, has created a venue unlike any other in Corpus Christi. “There is a feeling of accomplishment when you can produce an event that creates memories that last a lifetime,” Lain said. “Everyone remembers their first concert, or the best show they ever saw.” To celebrate, House of Rock is throwing a 10 Year Anniversary Bash, kicking off at 6 pm, Saturday, July 25, headlined by Authority Zero and featuring a long list of exciting bands who have supported the venue through the years. Lain said the anniversary bash is he and his partner’s way of celebrating the growth and success of House

GO:

of Rock, thanks to its solid local support. “We are a venue that needs things to do, in a community full of people with things to do who need a venue,” Lain added. “This way of thinking has always been beneficial to both the House of Rock and the community.” Tying into that spirit of community, the entire month of July House of Rock is set to host “DIY July,” where the venue will host shows, open mics, and events put on exclusively by local promoters and local acts. “It’s important to us to help cultivate the local art and music scene,” Lain said. “If the response is good and people are successful, this will become an annual event.” But Lain said the company’s success didn’t come easy, or overnight. Layered beneath House of Rock’s exterior of good times and loud tunes is an unwavering work ethic that Lain tries to instill in his staff. Lain rose in the Corpus Christi music scene as a young bartender at local restaurants before signing on with the Executive Surf Club at the age of 19. He quickly ascended the ladder there and soon was placed in charge of booking local and regional bands. Lain leveraged eight successful years there, and took a major step as the booking agent for Concrete Street Amphitheater, the largest music venue in town. Those roles helped him better understand the live music business and caught the eye of a group of three local club owners who wanted to open a new kind of a venue: A

Since opening, House of Rock has brought choice acts to Corpus Christi, including Powerman 5000, Hinder, Clutch, Girl In A Coma, and Slightly Stoopid - the venue’s first sold-out show. In the years since, House of Rock has grown to include the “Kitchen,” a new pizza counter that serves up some of the tastiest sub sandwiches, meatballs and pizza concoctions in Corpus Christi. And while the kids enjoy rocking there at night, it seems the downtown business crowd has flocked to House of Rock for its tasty lunches and hip Rock N’ Roll setting. But we’re only ten years in, Lain reminds us, and there’s plenty more to do at House of Rock. Recently married and having added a newborn boy to his family, which also includes a teenage daughter, Lain has become the patriarch of Rock N’ Roll in Corpus Christi; a father-figure who has helped shape the way people enjoy art, live music, and now food, downtown. Looking back on all the sweat and late nights it took to get there, Lain says he’s thankful to the bands, the artists and the fans who helped make House of Rock what it is today. “Pulling this off and making it look easy is the challenge I enjoy. I am fortunate to have an awesome staff that shares a common vision and gets things done,” Lain said from behind his weathered desk inside the club. “We accomplished a lot of what we wanted, and we still have a laundry list of things we would like to get done,” he added.

Fireworks!! Shoreline Boulevard

Boom! Crackle! Fizzle! What’s more iconic than mass amounts of fireworks in July? Lucky for us, Corpus Christi has their Big Bang Celebratory fireworks on the 4th of July off of the USS Lexington, sponsored by HEB. Preceded by a parade and other activities up and down Shoreline Blvd., lay down your blanket anywhere on Shoreline or Ocean Dr. and you’re sure to have the best seat in town. Then turn around, because there’s another grand finale to see! The Hooks will then light up the sky with their own set of fireworks! And all summer long, they’ll provide this lightshow after each Friday night game, sponsored by Bud Light.

At Molly McArdle’s Irish Sports Bar, karaoke is sort of their “thing.” If you want a true local experience, mosey on into this authentic dive bar, get a few taps in you, then find your untapped singing potential. Pick your favorite song and belt it out! Singing isn’t your thing? It’s just as fun to watch (and hear) the others.

The decommissioned aircraft carrier, the USS Lexington, is one of Corpus Christi’s main tourist attractions; but did you know that this floating museum is said to have a resident ghost? Named Charly, this friendly seaman has stayed aboard despite being killed in 1944 in an attack off the coast of the Philippines. Known to be polite and knowledgeable, many visitors to the boat have encountered this uniformed gentleman. So, do something different and partake in the Ghost Tour on the USS Lexington. Word is, Charly isn’t the only spirit aboard.

ARANSAS PASS:

No longer a PASS THROUGH but a DESTINATION LOCATION The town of Aransas Pass wants to be on the map for your vacation spot, your second home and simply just a great place to live. From a quiet shrimping town to a vibrant and developing future, Aransas Pass sure has a story to tell. Words: Cissy Tabor Photo Courtesy:The Aransas Pass Progress, 1967

56 the bend magazine

[the lifestyle magazine of the coastal bend}

A Town Built on Shrimping Aransas Pass was once called The Harbor City. Its history tells of a town with a difficult start. Several attempts failed to develop Aransas Pass into a great deepwater port city. In 1890 it seemed a future would be founded when plans to dig a channel from the Gulf to the proposed Harbor City were rolled out by two notable organizers: Russell Harrison, son of the late president, William Henry Harrison and former Texas lieutenant governor, Thomas Benton Wheeler. The impressive three-story Hoyt Hotel (later named Bay View Hotel) was built to attract and accommodate the influx of people who arrived by train or boat to check out the new port city. However funds diminished in 1893 and plans were halted. In 1909 a land lottery promotion garnered interest and the City of Aransas Pass was founded. This fishing village sent its first shipment of shrimp to San Antonio in 1912. A seawall was built after the 1919 hurricane and the shrimping industry growth continued, adding more businesses, canneries and packing plants built on the harbor. By late 1940s the shrimping fleet was one of the largest on the Gulf coast.

Harbor Days of Past “Harbor” says Michael Garrett into the phone. A phone he has answered for 30 years as proprietor of the Harbor Shrimp Company in Conn Brown Harbor. His weather-worn face and sincere smile speak of his way of life. His father drove a truck hauling shrimp, his mother worked at the packing plant, and at 14 years old Garrett was working at the harbor. “At 17 I had my own fish house” Garrett says. Today his nephew, Jacob, 16, works summers for his uncle at the marina. Like many teenagers in the past, the harbor was a place to earn income by unloading, icing, and heading shrimp. There were plenty of jobs for kids at the harbor and they spent their money at local businesses: Winn’s, Morrison’s Five & Dime, and the movie theatre; none of which exist today, explained Garrett. Garrett has lived through the fluctuating tide of the shrimping industry in Aransas Pass. “We would unload 100 boats a day: Today, 20 to 30.” He attributes the shift in business to various obstacles: the turtle excluder device (TED), price of fuel, price of shrimp, imports, and too many state and federal rules and regula-

tions. There are no photos in Garrett’s office of the packed harbor in its heyday. “I wish I had a picture,” he says, “We never had time to take any. We worked seven days a week and didn’t know what holidays were.” But his office did have a bucket to collect money for the families any time a fellow shrimper died. “Everyone helped,” he said. “It was a wonderful way of life. The people in this industry are very proud of what they do and they work very, very hard” said Garrett. The shrimping business runs deep in Aransas Pass families. Mary Jane Abrego of the Lupe Lopez family grew up with a grandfather who was a shrimper, her father a boat captain, four brothers owned or captained shrimp boats and nephews and grandsons worked in the business. Two of her sisters married shrimpers. None are shrimpers today. “Little by little they started finding other jobs,” Abrego said of her brothers and other relatives “because they couldn’t make a living anymore.” Her memories of “the Bayfront” in the summers when she was younger are good ones. As teenagers her brothers worked summer jobs heading shrimp at the harbor. There were so many boats in those days, “you could hop from boat to boat all the way around and not touch ground,” she said. Abrego also remembers when she was a child, the Shrimporee was free. For the annual celebration, shrimpers would come in with pounds of fresh shrimp and big boilers and everything at the Shrimporee was free.

Keeping History From old to new, changes to revitalize Conn Brown Harbor have begun. The old slabs of foundation at the harbor are now crushed rock, which will be used for roads. “The old shrimping industry is imbedded in the very bedrock of the roads that are going to be created here. Letting the folks know that we are not coming in and just demolishing it but are trying to embrace our heritage and keep and reuse much of it,” said Sylvia Carrilla, Aransas Pass City Manager. Pilings taken from Conn Brown Harbor will be grouped together and used as nautical pieces around town. Locals know Aransas Pass as a shrimping town. Its future image may hold that of a shrimping town adorned with new beautification improvements for all to enjoy.

Conn Brown Harbor A rusted sign, overgrown grass and only a handful of boats is the drive-up view of the harbor today - but this could be your future vacation destination or homesite. Developer Hal Jones is working with city officials to transform Conn Brown Harbor. The new development will be called Harbor Towne at Conn Brown Harbor. This ten-year project will be approximately 35% residential, 35 % commercial and 30% public open spaces. Proposed developments include a boardwalk, hotels, restaurants, shops, homes, parks, an amphitheatre and an amusement park. “This is an active

intercostal waterway. There are barges and ship traffic so part of the harbor remains a working harbor sort of like the Baltimore harbor,” explains Carrilla. All the fishing piers and the free public boat launches will remain. The area around city dock will be beautified with greenery and benches. “This is still your harbor,” says Carrilla to relieve the concerns of locals who fear loss of public access to the harbor. “You can fish at city dock, ride your bike, enjoy free outdoor concerts at the amphitheatre, picnic in green spaces, launch your boat at free boat launches, walk on the boardwalk, and enjoy the park,” says Carrilla.

361 Waterway Noticeable changes along this route include the casino cruise ship (Aransas Queen Casino) now open for business and residential properties going up. “You really can’t find waterfront property as cheap as we have it here,” says Carrilla. The 361 waterway route to the Port Aransas Ferry is targeted for improvement. The city has plans to clean up the shrub brush and beaches along the road and add palapas and benches for shady places to picnic. “We are working with TXDOT to create those flat areas to become places where folks can get off and don’t need to drive

all the way to Port Aransas, or wait in the ferry line,” says Carrilla. Enjoying this area is a new personal discovery for Carrilla. She has new eyes for the town after a recent experience wade fishing, where Carrilla found herself among sea grass and dolphins when she waded out 20 yards with her pole after a rainfall.

Downtown Revitalization “As we transition Conn Brown Harbor so goes the transition to downtown, because there are connection points,” explains Carrilla about plans to connect historic downtown to the harbor by creating a hike and bike trail. The downtown facelift has already begun with new lighting, additional

Christmas lighting and decorations and center mediums and promenade lighting. Other plans include adding benches along the sidewalks in the downtown area and encouraging businesses to improve facades with low cost loans. Needless to say, BIG plans are underway. City officials hope to benefit from rising DATE: 2-3-2015 industry growth in the area. “We are a hub, but we are a pass-through hub. We’ve got some beautiful amenities that we’ve not capitalized on. So the next couple of years is capitalizing on those and capturing the folks that pass through. I want them to stop, to discover, to experience what we’re all about, because this is a gem of a town,” says Carrilla, proudly.

Our city is attracting more tourists than ever, and we have some special people to thank for that. There are over 8 million people who choose to visit Corpus Christi each year. That’s roughly the entire population of Austria! Tourism is incredibly important to our economy, our growth, and our overall reputation. Now, meet the people who work hard to promote our sparkling city and bring visitors to our different areas of the Coastal Bend.

Byline: Whitney Noble Meet our Tourism Ambassadors

CORPUS CHRISTI

Corpus Christi Convention & Visitors Bureau with Ashley H. Simper, Director of Communications TB: What is the economic impact of tourism in Corpus Christi? CVB: During the last fiscal year, tourism provided an economic benefit to Corpus Christi of over $1.2 billion.

TB: How do you reach visitors and promote tourism here? CVB: As the marketing arm of Corpus Christi, our team works hard to reach as many prospective visitors as we can. We strive to be progressive, creative and true ambassadors for the Coastal Bend. Visitors to our area are increasing year over year, both domestic and international, but our top target markets are San Antonio, Houston, Austin, and the Rio Grande Valley. To reach visitors from those markets, we have a strong digital presence. We launched a new website in March of this year that we’re very excited about, have developed a robust and highly-effective social media strategy that continues to evolve and the implementation of a thorough media plan with our agency, Pettus Advertising. As well as our digital presence, we employ a dynamic outdoor

62 the bend magazine

campaign with the use of 11 LED billboards that are strategically placed within our target markets. These boards have rotating messages with our branding as well as special events in our area, general advertising spotlighting our beautiful destination, partner promotions, etc.

TB: What kind of visitors do you hope to attract? CVB: Our Sales team works diligently to promote the destination to business travelers and sports organizers, while our Communications and Leisure departments work to bring in those leisure guests. The Coastal Bend is blessed to be an outdoor lover’s paradise and nature tourism is the predominant sector of visitors to our area. The regional approach that we adopted in 2014 has expanded our scope to also include our neighboring towns and their offerings. In doing so, we have seen great results as a region in regards to visitor number increases.

TB: How do you develop attractions to bring in more visitors? CVB: With our location along the beautiful waterways, our entire

area is blessed with so much natural beauty and wildlife. This alone draws people in from all over Texas and increasingly more distant destinations. But it’s also our South Texas culture that people enjoy; it’s the unique flavor that we offer that delivers the experiences that keep visitors coming back to Corpus Christi time and time again. We have so much to offer guests: music, art, culinary, nature, attractions, festivals and we’re expanding upon that! Our attraction partners are constantly working to enhance the visitor experience at their own venues with expansions, additions to programming, etc. Our festivals and special events are increasing in attendance each year.

TB: What are your physical/ local resources? CVB: All that we do here at the CVB would not be possible without the unyielding support of our partners and Board of Directors. There are so many and they each know who they are; they simply make our world work. And we hope that we make theirs work a little better, too! We all have the same end goal in mind: Viva Corpus Christi!

[the lifestyle magazine of the coastal bend}

Top Attractions: Truly, all our attractions are amazing in our book. And here’s why: because it isn’t just about the numbers; it’s about the EXPERIENCE. People want different things; their interests vary across the board. Fortunately in our area, there’s so much desire & motivation to continue enhancing that visitor experience that our offerings are increasing annually. Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend IS the attraction….we just work hard to blow them away while they’re here.

CANE HARBOR PERFECTION PADRE ISLAND, TX

Don’t harbor your dreams any further, own one on Cane Harbor

Words: Whitney Noble Photos: Jason Page

PLANS FOR HARBOR MARINA: A new marina district has been approved and will be built right at the fingertip of Cane Harbor. They’ll dredge a new canal system to extend from the West side of S. Padre Island Dr. to the East side and will orchestrate boat and pedestrian traffic by 3 separate arches. The center arch will be for the boats, and the two arches on either side will be for pedestrians and golf carts. The canal archway will have a 13 foot clearance, whereas the two pedestrian archways will have a 10 foot clearance. The canals will be finished late 2015, early 2016, and the bridge has an end-of-theyear completion date.

I

n a category all its own, this Mediterranean-style waterfront estate will capture your heart, not only for its numerous stylish features, but particularly for its panoramic and fiery sunset views and the sparkling Upper Padre Island lights at night.

Built originally as the builder’s personal home, it’s no wonder the attention to detail and quality features are present at every turn. It is very clearly custom designed for luxurious and maximum indoor-outdoor living. It was this and the privacy of Cane Harbor that lead owners Victor and Dee Jae Schreck to purchase this home after retiring here from successful careers in Dallas. Dee Jae’s father was involved in the dredging of Padre Island, so she grew up coming to the area and knew it was a place she wanted to eventually live.

From the time you pull up to the circular drive and enter through the iron and glass entry doors, you will see the magnificent foyer along with a backlit wall of windows that offer breathtaking views of outdoor living at its best. Playfully peeking behind mature palms, you can begin to understand why the siesta is historically common throughout Mediterranean cultures. Relaxation just flows over you in the serenity of this home, outfitted in calming travertine tiles and teal accents. A handsome sandstone fireplace is the centerpiece of the home, standing tall and nearly reaching the top of the stately 25-foot ceilings. Colorful marble tiles surround the fireplace and bring out vibrant accents and shine. At the center of the room is a 500-pound sandstone coffee table. The homeowners love to rearrange the furniture in their living room as variety IS the spice of life; however, the table stays in its place. Ornate cabinetry work in the kitchen offers elegance alongside its gourmet appliances, adjoining

rounded breakfast salon and glamorous family room. Custom plantation shutters prep up each window creating that warm homey feeling of exceptional, classic craftsmanship. James Sandel at SunQuest Shade and Shuttle Shoppe was the only one able and willing to take on the custom shutter job, paying such close attention to detail that each and every shutter lines up perfectly with the others. The resort-style backyard takes full advantage with its twinkling tiled in-ground heated pool and bubbling hot tub. Bring on the boat! The lift, remote controlled, is capable of hoisting a 10,000 pound boat. Be captain of your big ship and the king of your big castle. Catch dinner right off your dock as the fish swarm toward the submerged green fishing light strategically placed below. All surrounded by beautiful custom landscaping with mature palms. Cane Harbor is part of its own Homeowner’s Association, where the owners of the homes on the street are exclusive from the rest of the Island and make their own choices! With low yearly

assessments, the homeowners are their own bosses. The median was just redone with large and low-maintenance rocks, and each palm tree lining the street has its own spotlight for when it gets dark. This is THE street to own a home on, and this one just happens to be for sale! You, too, can live the life of luxury.

LIVE WELL GROW SOUTH TEXAS

“I think it is extremely valuable to garden alongside experienced growers, so coming out to the community garden is a great place to do that.” “Our job is to teach people how to grow their own food, so that they can provide for themselves.”

than distribution.” Campbell explains that stores are more focused on produce that looks good and lasts long, rather than produce that tastes good. The result being that stores want seeds that will generate lasting produce, while local farmers want seeds that will yield tasty produce. Most farmers who sell at the market also farm using organic practices. GROW’s farmer’s market, the Corpus Christi Downtown Farmers’ Market, is open downtown every Wednesday evening from 5-7 pm. A variety of venders sell a selection of food such as meat, eggs, cheese and produce that are from within a 100-200 mile radius from Corpus Christi. While a few craft vendors are present, “Our goal is to be a food focused organization,” says Campbell.

G

ROW Local South Texas was born in March 2013 from Aislynn Campbell’s desire to increase the option of local, healthful food for Corpus Christi residents.

What’s Next for GROW Local: •

Aspirations of expanding the farmer’s market presence downtown.

Incorporating a weekly street festival into the market.

Increasing the number of apprentice growers at the Learning Garden, adding a public park with a children’s area to the garden, and setting up distribution of locally grown food to local restaurants.

Initially beginning as a small farmer’s market, GROW Executive Director Aislynn Campbell explains “My passion was healthy food, buying healthy food for my kids, and it turned into something, something bigger than I could ever even imagined. And it continues to keep doing that.” GROW has expanded to also include a learning garden and educational outreach programs. So not only does GROW help explain how to garden, but they also educate the community on what to do with the produce once the food has been harvested. “The educational component of everything that we do is really a top priority,” describes Campbell. GROW’s educative outreach extends to involvement in local heath

events as well as local schools. They are also partnering with Youth Odyssey this summer to put on a local food production camp. “Outreach initiatives are extremely important in our education process,” expresses Campbell. Educating the community extends to the ability of consumers to ask questions of the local farmers at the market. Farmers should be able to teach prospective buyers about their food and where it came from, along with the farming practices used for production. An advantage of purchasing locally grown food is that it gives consumers “… the opportunity to speak face to face with the person who has harvested and grown your food,” says Campbell. Consuming locally grown food allows consumers to eat what is in season catering to the farm to table movement and was most likely picked that same day, so the nutrients are often greater. The quality of the seeds is usually better with locally grown food, with seeds that are, according to Campbell, “…used for taste, rather

Those who might be interested in starting their own garden can find help at the Learning Garden at 3808 Up River Road. “The open volunteer hours are a great place to come out and meet our staff, the other volunteers and apprentices,” says Campbell. “I think it is extremely valuable to garden alongside experienced growers, so coming out to the community garden is a great place to do that,” she indicates. Informational appointments and tours are available, as are workshops and children’s activities. Those who sign up for the volunteer hours not only reap the benefits of gardening education, but they also take home a share of the produce. Campbell also recommends seeking out Gill’s Nursery and the Master Gardener groups in Aransas and San Patricio County for educational information. “Our job is to teach people how to grow their own food, so that they can provide for themselves,” claims Campbell.

SUMMER SAFETY TIPS: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

“When the weather heats up in South Texas it doesn’t take very long to cause serious harm to the body,” Dr. Blow said. “Make sure you’re drinking plenty of fluids and taking frequent breaks from the sun.”

Tips to Stay Safe and Healthy during the Summer As school lets out and the mercury rises, the CHRISTUS Spohn Trauma Team is encouraging the thousands of residents and visitors headed to Coastal Bend beaches this year to remember to keep it safe. “This is the beginning of our busy season here at the hospital,” said Dr. Osbert Blow, Trauma Medical Director at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial, a designated Level II Trauma Center. “We want to make sure everyone has a good time, but that they don’t have to make a trip here to see us,” Dr. Blow added.

Wear appropriate clothing outdoors, including a widebrimmed hat. Take frequent water breaks if you’re going to be in the sun. Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and be sure to re-apply. Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle. Always keep water nearby when using fireworks, and keep a safe distance. Keep an eye on everyone in your group, and know who to call in an emergency.

in the water; and know where lifeguards are stationed if you do need to call for help. Dehydration and sun exposure are also common ailments coming through the doors of the CHRISTUS Spohn Trauma Center, Dr. Blow said. To keep hydrated, beachgoers and outdoor enthusiasts should take frequent water breaks, wear protective clothing and hats, and never leave a pet or child in a car alone. “When the weather heats up in South Texas it doesn’t take very long to cause serious harm to the body,” Dr. Blow said. “Make sure you’re drinking plenty of fluids and taking frequent breaks from the sun.” One of the more favorite summer activities, fireworks, can also be the most dangerous, medical experts caution. In 2012 alone, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 8,700 people for fireworks related injuries; 55% of those fireworks-related injuries were to the extremities and 31% were to the head, according to the National Fire Protection Agency. Here too, in South Texas, trauma personnel see burns to the hands and body each summer related to fireworks. To stay safe while you celebrate, make sure to buy fireworks from reputable businesses; make sure adults are there to monitor the festivities; save alcohol consumption for after the fireworks display; light fireworks one at a time and move to a safe distance quickly; and always have water or a fire extinguisher on hand in case you might need it.

One of the most common injures the CHRISTUS Spohn Trauma Team sees during the warmer months are water-related injuries, including drowning victims. In fact, more than one in five drowning victims are children 14-years-old and younger, and most incidents happen when a child falls into a pool or is left unattended at the beach, according to the National Security Council.

By following these few simple safety guidelines, the CHRISTUS Spohn Trauma Team hopes Coastal Bend residents and visitors will better enjoy their summer, while avoiding the emergency room.

The Trauma Team encourages parents to keep an eye on their children as they head out to the water; looking for signs of distress, like bobbing up and down

“Have fun, be safe and take care this summer,” Dr. Blow added. “And if you suffer an injury, know that we are here to provide quality care for you and your family.”

eter Barr is now a 36-time award-winning designer. Peter’s work has been sold through Sotheby’s and in some of the finest shops on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. In the early 90’s Barr had a designer line of Jewelry in Sak’s Fifth Avenue in Chicago.

“There is a price I pay for creative freedom. If I worry too much about everyone liking my custom jewelry, I will never create my best work.”

“There is a price I pay for creative freedom. If I worry too much about everyone liking my custom jewelry, I will never create my best work. So not only will you never see it, I won’t either. In jewelry design competition, the judges have already seen all of yesterday’s designs. They want a peek at tomorrow, but they want it to sell today. As an award-winning designer, I can tell you that is a lot harder than it sounds.” “There are a lot of things happening in jewelry today. Color is big, from colored diamonds to pistachio pearls and sapphires of every color available to the designer. There is a freedom being given to the true artisan. Thanks to today’s technology, gemstones are being cut in ways never seen before. It is truly an exciting time for the creative soul and designer of custom jewelry.” Peter’s custom designs often create a piece just for a client from a design they have in mind, or creating a new design using their existing gemstones and gold. “My favorite part,” says Barr, “is watching the emotional connection between a person and a piece of my jewelry. Each piece should be just as comfortable to wear, as it is beautiful. That is what I strive for.”

COASTAL BEND KAFTA KABOBS, BABA GANOUSH, AND PITA BREAD THE BARBECUE OF ANY GIVEN COUNTRY REFLECTS THE NATURAL RESOURCES OF THE LAND.

n America, our style of barbecue was born in the great forests of olden days. Our forefathers had access to limitless amounts of firewood, so they were able to slowly roast huge sides of beef or pork on fires that burned for days. We inherited our love of briskets and other large cuts of meat from the long-burning fires of our ancestors.

But trees have always been scarce in the deserts of Arabia. Barbecue in the Middle East evolved over the treeless centuries into small cuts of meat that could be grilled quickly over a modest fire. This fast-grilling tradition produced the kafta kabob. A kafta kabob is a skewer of ground meat seasoned with herbs and spices and grilled over a fire. The kafta kabob brings a unique and exotic flavor to the table. And because they cook so quickly, it is easy to grill your kafta to perfection. Traditional Middle Eastern kafta is made from mutton. But local mutton is hard to find because sheep are difficult to raise in the heat and humidity of the Coastal Bend. For this recipe, we used our own grass-fed ground beef and seasoned the kafta with garlic, onions, parsley, and mint from the garden. Cumin and cinnamon give kafta kabobs their signature Middle Eastern flavor. Baba ganoush is a dip made from eggplant, tahini (sesame seed paste), garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil. Grilling the eggplant gives your baba ganoush its smoky flavor while removing the phenolic compounds that can make eggplant bitter. Baba ganoush can be served on top of your kafta kabobs or as a dip for vegetables or pita bread.

You can grill your pita bread along with the kafta and eggplant, or finish it on a cast iron skillet. Homemade pita is the perfect complement to your kafta kebob and brings an authentic flair to this dish. These recipes are perfect for a simple and healthy weeknight meal for the family. And these dishes are so flavorful and out of the ordinary, they will make a wonderful addition to any weekend grilling party. Bringing the Middle East to your grill has never been so easy.
