Our Parade of Homes features New Homes by some of the best Homebuilders in the Coastal Bend. We hope you will enjoy the tour!
Putting on a Parade of Homes is big challenge. Coordinating multiple builders for a dozen homes to produce the Coastal Bend Home Builders Association 2022 Parade of Homes has not been an easy task! However, thanks to a multitude of talented people, we have put together an amazing show for you this year.
First, I’d like to first thank the Builders who invest their time and resources in this event. These New Home Builders work tirelessly for weeks on end to bring you the best and most beautiful, innovative homes in South Texas. We know that you will love their unique work.
And, thank you to all the sub-contractors, suppliers and trades people who make our houses so beautiful. It takes an army of people to get a house to completion, and this year they have all gone above and beyond to prepare these homes for you to tour. We appreciate their hard work all year long, but don’t often get the chance to publicly thank them for their efforts.
Finally, thank you to the Coastal Bend HBA staff for their tireless work in organizing and promoting this event. They seem to have an endless supply of ideas and energy, ensuring that the Coastal Bend is informed about this outstanding event.
We made several changes to the Parade this year that we believe will make it an even better event, including event dates in the cooler fall weather, and free entry to all homes! Furthermore, we have limited the number of homes in the event, increasing the quality of each entry and making sure that you can tour them all.
We hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to visit each of the 12 homes that have been entered in the 2022 Parade of Homes. For your convenience, a map to each home is included in this magazine and each home is open from 11am- 5pm on all days of the Parade.

How do we start to build your home? “We start with your budget. Careful consideration is taken to ensure that you get the most for each dollar. Followed by lot selection. How you want to live must be considered when evaluating where you want to live. The lot is just as important as the actual home. Next would be the home design meeting. We come up with a conceptual design based on the design questionnaire we ask all our customers to fill out. Then we want to know what you like—so we ask for pictures that inspire you so you get a home that fits your personality and lifestyle. We utilize this conceptual design to give the customer a cost estimate.
Once the customer has approved their conceptual layout and projected budget, we will then get a TBD contract and develop a full set of detailed plans. These plans are given to the customer for a thorough review and approval. Finally we provide a final cost and a construction meeting will be set. This meeting is utilized to reaffirm that the design and features meet the customer’s lifestyle and needs
Top Tips When Building a Custom Home. The number one thing homeowners need to consider is budget. It is easy to over-design and get carried away. Second, put a lot of thought into lot selection. This is sometimes overlooked. Many customers are surprised when I mention sun positions and prevailing winds. Make sure the builder is a good fit for you. Third, be careful who you hire to build your dream home. You want someone who communicates well and is open, upfront, and honest. Make sure to do your research - ask your builder for references. Finally, remember to have fun with it. Building a custom home is truly rewarding when it is all said and done. Look at the big picture. Construction is not perfect. Layout your expectations with the builder in the beginning and then step back.

REASONS TO CONSIDER A CAREER IN THE TRADES
With the sky-high prices of a college edu cation today, the sad reality is students are graduating severely in debt and unable to get a job that pays enough to pay that debt. Well, here’s some good news. You may not need to go to college to find a great career!
Just ask Mike Rowe, the host of the show, Dirty Jobs, he will tell you: “There’s an absurd belief that a four-year degree is the only path to success.” Here are five reasons why careers in the trades are some of the best career paths to be focused on right now, both in terms of income and job security.
1. TRADE SCHOOLS ARE CHEAPER
Most community colleges offer 1 and 2 year certificates that give you the hands on experi ence you need to land a well paying job. Here in the Coastal Bend, we have several options for training: the Craft Training Center, Del Mar College and the Association of General Contractors all offer low cost trainings that will get you started in your career. Most of the programs work with local employers to help you get apprenticeships that can lead to full time employment.
2. TRADE JOBS PAY REALLY WELL
If we look at averages, the paychecks for trades are either at or above other careers. An electrician or plumber with 2 years ex perience can expect to earn $48,000 a year. Once you become a Journeman in either of those disciplines (which means you work as an assistant for 4 years), you can expect that income to double
3. JOB SECURITY
During the recent shut down the only people still working was those that were deemed “es sential”. All of the trades—plumbers, electri cians, hvac, masons, concrete workers—were all considered essential. Currently, all the trades are losing their aging workforce. The trades are desperately short of new workers to come in and take their places. There is great opportunity for hard workers.
4. THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF WORK
Our economy continues to expand. South Texas is on the verge of great expansion. There is much industry that is coming to this area that will need skilled labor, and those workers will need houses to live in. The po tential is amazing!
5. THE HOURS CAN BE MORE FLEXIBLE
Many trades have different (work nights, or work three days on/four days off, etc.), that are more appealing than the typical office job where you work all day, 40-50 hours/week. Trade jobs can give you the flexibility you need to take a class, start your own business, or pursue a passion.
There are great financial rewards and unlim ited opportunities for young men and women that are willing to work hard. College is not the only path to a successful future. If you work hard, a career as a plumber, electrician or mason can give you everything you want I life without the expense of college.

He is a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the United Sates Air Force. In 2022 Dick was Knighted with Sam Houston’s sword into the Knights of the Order of San Jacinto, this honor is accorded those who have rendered outstanding service to Texas in keeping with the aims of the “Sons of the Republic of Texas”. He was the only SRT member Knighted in this calendar year, which is a distinct honor.
