What Local’s List winner have you yet to visit or meet that you’d like to and why?
Who doesn't love a healthy looking tan? Being that I have never had a spray tan and I hear so many good things about Third Coast Spray Tans, I may just have to try it out one of these days.
I had the honor of taking Stacie Richline's (Water Dog Floating Yoga) photos for the magazine, but I've yet to make it to one of her classes. It sounds like so much fun to combine yoga with water sport!
I would want to visit South Texas Distillery - Home of Wild Rag Vodka. It’s so cool that we have a distillery crafted by locals!

There are actually a few on my list but the first one I will visit is Bellino and I have plans already to go this week! I have heard wonderful things about the food and ambiance and am excited to check it out while supporting our local businesses.
I have an embarrassing admission— promise me we can still be friends... I have never had Gates Donuts! Blasphemy, I know. I can’t wait to try out this local legend.
I would choose BKK thai kitchen + bar because I’ve heard fabulous things about the food, atmosphere, and staff.

For this year’s Local’s List cover, we wanted to create something a little more conceptual. By taking the ideas of a Coastal Bend summer and the celebration of Local’s List 2020, we created a playful scene featuring Tannins Wine Bar & Tapas Restaurant, who won for both Wine Bar and Wine List, to say “Cheers!” to each of our 2020 winners. Kennedy Dental Care
Is your child nervous about the Dentist? If the answer is yes, then you will be happy to meet Scout, Kennedy Dental Care’s very own therapy dog. Scout’s job is to take the edge off of nervous and uncertain patients or parents. She is being trained to provide comfort and affection (and detect when it is needed). She will place her head on your child’s lap, climb onto the dentist chair, or offer her soft fur to calm your child’s nerves.

WITHOUT YOU, WeWouldn't Exist
Our annual reader’s choice poll, The Local’s List, will always hold a special place in my heart. A little over three years ago when I first started working for The Bend Magazine, putting together the 2017 Local’s List feature was my first real assignment. I remember noticing how important the honor was to so many local businesses, and thinking how these people being honored were at the core of The Bend’s existence.
I’ve spoken to this thought multiple times, but our magazine truly would not exist if it weren’t for the incredible community of locals who make up the Coastal Bend region. The small business owners who wake up every day with a mission to make this area a better place to live and work; the event organizers who pour their hearts into creating ways for locals to fall even more in love with their city; the creatives who produce beautiful work and put our area on the map as an inclusive home for arts and culture; the chefs and restaurateurs who have a passion for fresh foods and providing others with innovative dishes … the list goes on – and these are the people who allow The Bend Magazine to exist in the first place. Because simply put, without you, we wouldn’t have a story to tell.
The July issue is always a special one, as it allows our staff to take a step back and really listen to our community. We hand things over to our readers as they tell us who their favorite local businesses, services, people, and places are. Over a period of two months, readers nominate and then vote for their top picks in lifestyle-related categories. Nominees are vetted based on their local engagement and category fit, and the top five in each advance to voting. This year, in the midst of a pandemic and many of the nominated businesses and brands having to close their doors, the votes continued to pour in regardless. In all, 136,121 votes from more than 30,000 people were tallied for this year’s poll.
Beginning on page 28, you’ll find the results of The Local’s List 2020 readers' choice poll. I’d like to extend a huge congratulations to all of our winners, especially those who have made it onto the list for the first time!
When speaking on the topic of what makes this local community so great, I would be foolish to not speak to the incredible diversity that makes up the Coastal Bend. While putting together this issue, much has been happening both inside and outside our city on the subject of race and the severe inequality Black people face daily. The world has erupted, in a demand for justice, and for good reason.
As both a small business and a media outlet shining light on all things positive in our community, we understand we have not included Black voices in that narrative to the best degree we can. We also understand that actions speak louder than words; we can and must do better. By bringing more Black voices in our community to our editorial team and asking our readers and our local community as a whole to hold us accountable to that ideal, we aim to do just that. We are committing ourselves to raising the level of diversity in our coverage, actively seeking out Black voices, and showcasing the strength we all gain from our differences, that make up your community.
We’ve always had a mission of spotlighting the incredible aspects of our community, and the BIPOC population in the Coastal Bend is no exception. So, we are committing to do better, being more inclusive, and be an active part of the solution. Because everyone has a story to tell, and we’ll be here to share it for as long as you’ll have us.

VISIT CORPUS CHRISTI RALLIES WITH LOCAL DONATIONS TO SUPPORT INDUSTRY EMPLOYEES
BY: JESSIE MONSIVAIS PHOTOS COURTESY OF: VISIT CORPUS CHRISTI
Visit Corpus Christi is supporting local hospitality, tourism, and service industry employees with a new program called Visit Corpus Christi Cares, which provides emergency funding to employees from these industries faced with unforeseen expenses that cannot be covered by insurance. Due to nationwide stay-at-home orders, many of these businesses have been forced to temporarily shut down and reduce hours and staff. And as any local knows, these industries contribute heavily to our economy.
Meredith Darden, Director of Visitor Services at Visit Corpus Christi, said the idea was inspired by the difficulties of their job as a destination marketing organization when the pandemic hit and shut businesses down.
"To say to visitors, ‘Don't come here because you can't come here' made us think about some of the other people in our industry and how they were affected," Darden says. "We realized we had a mechanism to help them. We implemented the Visit CC Cares fundraising program to directly give to the employees that couldn't go to work."
Visit CC Cares, which launched on April 8, has partnered with Made in Corpus Christi to sell locally-made merchandise, with half the profits going directly to the Visit CC Cares fund. From T-shirts and hats to decals, koozies, and more, all products benefiting the non-profit program can be purchased directly online at madeincorpuschristi.com. Thanks to Made in Corpus Christi and significant private donations from the Vishal Raju Bhagat Foundation and Bill Pettus from Pettus Advertising, Visit CC Cares was able to distribute 11 financial assistance payments within a few weeks after the launch.
"It's really heartwarming to see the community get behind the retail merchandise. Seeing people wear the products that say, ‘We Ride This Wave Together,’ knowing that they made that purchase with the understanding that 50 percent of the profits were going to somebody [in need], makes me proud to be a part of this community," says Darden.
Darden said the Visit CC Cares program will always exist, because there are still unforeseen circumstances.
"We will keep the Visit CC Cares fund an evergreen fundraising mechanism so that we, as an organization, can assist if the need arises. We're going to continue our line of merchandise with Made in Corpus Christi and will continue to campaign for private donations," Darden says. "Visit CC Cares has funds available to help, and we want to help!"
Darden highly encourages struggling individuals in the hospitality, travel, or tourism industries to apply. The application process can be found online on the Visit Corpus Christi website. You can also make contributions via online donations or by mailing in a check or money order.
"We are thankful to see our community come together in these little movements." Darden said. "It means so much to the people who are in need."

Q: Aside from creating beautiful smiles, what is a passion of yours?
A: One of my greatest passions is surfing. I started surfing while attending dental school in Southern California, I have been hooked ever since. Recently I have started shaping a few surfboards and had an article I wrote in a surf publication.
Q: What attracted you to South Texas?
A: I am originally from a small town in Oklahoma. Gaining my passion for surfing I wanted to live by the coast and South Texas happens to be the closest coast to my hometown in Oklahoma. It gives me proximity to family and also allows me to live at the beach.
Q: What makes Allen Dental Group unique?
A: When I first met Dr. Allen, I knew this was the place I needed to be. The group is different from other offices I have seen and shadowed previously. Allen Dental Group cares for their patients and treats every patient to the highest standard. The group has a family like atmosphere and we work hard to make every patient feel comfortable.
Picnic Spots
BY: JULIETA HERNANDEZ
For the spontaneous and the well-planned alike, a picnic makes for some savory memories. When you’ve got good company, fresh food, and cold drinks, don’t let location be the one factor to stump you. The pleasant outdoors comes with a fit for every picnic goer; here are a few spots where you can lay those blankets down and crack open that cooler. Just remember to practice social distancing and wear that mask.
BAYFRONT PARK
Bayfront Park is a top pick for anyone who likes sunshine and activity. If you need to get out of the house and remember that other people still exist, the distant joggers and dog-walkers who share the ocean views will be a delight. With close parking and a variety of scenic little nooks to choose from, picnic goers can enjoy an oceanfront vibe; just make sure to bring a good picnic blanket so you don’t get sand in your watermelon! 1513-1517 N Shoreline Blvd, Corpus Christi
THE BEACH
When it comes to picnic spots in the Coastal Bend, really any spot on the multiple beaches will suffice. From Padre Island National Seashore to Rockport Beach Park, there are numerous ways to enjoy living on the coast with the perfect snacks in hand. Pack up the sunscreen and blankets, gather your loved ones, and prep a day’s worth of treats!

SUNSET LAKE PARK
Sunset Lake Park in Portland is quiet and gorgeous, and lives up to its name: Sunsets are made to be seen from here. Terrain may be a bit more rocky, so thicker picnic blankets or foldable chairs are advised. Family fishing is popular at this peaceful little spot, too, and dogs love it here. Also, Portland winds are arguably some of the best winds to bring a kite into. 201 Sunset Dr, Portland
ROBERTS POINT PARK
Roberts Point Park in Port Aransas is known for its tidiness and convenience. Since it’s located right off the ferry landing, it’s pretty hard to miss, and it’s perfect for watching boats sail by. It’s got all the charm of Port Aransas without the sand. Although it’s a hot spot for community events, during its quieter weekends, it’s a relaxing place to unpack some sandwiches and watch different bird species fly by.
301 J C Barr Blvd, Port Aransas
THE WATERGARDENS
The Watergardens. A cliche? More like a classic! Having a sunset picnic while watching the harbor bridge begin to light up is as patriotic as a local can get around here. The Bellagio-style fountain, if turned on in full swing, is handsome and calming to witness. The grass is plush enough for a light picnic blanket, and you’ll be presented with a view no matter where you look: the uninterrupted sky, or the historic surrounding architecture. Pastor Donald G. Leavell
EDITORIAL DIRECTOR KYLIE COOPER AND PASTOR DON SIT DOWN TO HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT HIS JOURNEY TO FOUNDING A CHURCH THAT NOW REPRESENTS 38 DIFFERENT NATIONS, HOW THE DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD BECAME A TIPPING POINT AROUND THE NATION, AND WHY COMPLACENCY IS AN EXISTENTIAL THREAT
CONVERSATION BY: KYLIE COOPER
PHOTOS BY: LILLIAN REITZ
First, tell me a little about yourself and your journey.
I grew up in East Texas in a town called Palestine, and I thought that was the best place in the world. It was all I had ever known. I went to junior college there at Henderson County Junior College, but I wanted to get as far away from my town as I could to discover who I was. But, I didn’t have enough money for out-ofstate tuition because I was sending myself to college. I met a guy who had spent time at A & I Kingsville, and I thought it was a good place for me to go. I met my wife there and we got married during my senior year, and I graduated 1969. After that, I went into the Army for a little while and then left to work for Exxon for almost 17 years and stayed there for years and it was tough to get a promotion. I was one of the most educated guys there, you know? But finally, I did move up and went to drilling school to learn how to supervise through their extensive drilling program.
And when did you finally make your way to the Coastal Bend?
I eventually ended up in the Middle East and by this time, I was already preaching and sharing with other preachers in the area. But being in a non-Christian environment really weighed heavily on me because my faith is very palpable, it’s tangible for me. So, I just wanted to please God and I felt lonely. I was 38 at this point and I thought, "Man, I am a late bloomer," and it bothered me. So, one day I told God, "Look, if you want me to preach, you have to send me a sign because if I make a lot of money, I won’t leave that to preach," because I always wanted to make a lot of money in my life. But, one day after that, I was walking down the road from a bible study and I began to weep. I said, “I don’t need the money, I just need you.” And that is when I decided to leave and come to Corpus Christi.
How did you navigate the experience of being in an environment where most people might not share your beliefs?
I never forced my views or beliefs on people. But I always asked for equal time. In the oil field, you’re surrounded by all types of people. Being a preacher, I would feel like if I didn’t speak my truth, then it
would be like I was cooperating with these guys in certain types of behavior. So, I had to create a standard. I always demanded equal time: in your turf, do whatever you want to, but if you come on my turf, I am going to demand equal time. So, if people would come in and act a fool, I would say "Well, now I am going to tell you about Jesus Christi for two minutes."
You’ve been referenced as the “pastor of pastors” and preach to nations around the world. Tell me a little bit about that aspect of your work.
We have a ministry overseas called "The Fellowship International” where we serve more than 30,000 pastors in Ghana alone, and have ministries in Asia, Africa, Europe, Central America, and here in North America. I think we are called to the world and I wanted to reach out in that way. My wife and I have always had friends of various races and I have always just loved people. In my 20s, I heard an inner voice telling me “I would like a place where all of my children can worship me together” and I responded that I didn’t know how, and God said, “Love everyone who comes in your doors.” I thought he was giving me something to do, but later I realized he spoke that into me and I have never had a problem loving people. I just absolutely love people and that is what really did it for me. I believe that God doesn’t speak to us, but into us, so that is how I have always viewed it, and I think that is why our church is so diverse. We have people here from 38 different nations.
Where do you think your passion for teaching and sharing comes from?
I think it definitely came from my mom and dad. My dad was a lot of things. He worked for the railroads, he was a farmer, he was a pastor. My mother was a bible teacher and extremely educated. So, I definitely got my passion for teaching others from them.
I want to shift the conversation to speak to the racial injustices around our country and the recent uprising in protests and calls for action that arose after the horrendous death of George Floyd. In one of your video messages on Facebook, you said attention being put on looters takes away from the real reason people are protesting in the first
place. I’d love for you to expand on that thought.
In the community, people will come up to me and ask, “Hey Pastor, what do you think about this looting? Isn’t it horrendous that people are tearing down our country?” So, I let them talk, I give them equal time, and then I speak. The George Floyd murder was insidious and horrendous. We should never forget that and that is what is informing me. We’ve seen this before, but what Derek Chauvin did to George Floyd, that shocked the consciousness of America. He placed his knee on that man’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds and that is where the context of this conversation should be coming from. Because without that, it takes away our legitimacy. We don’t really want to have dialogue because dialogue always leads to discovery. So that is why we should always be talking, but there are forces in the world that don’t want dialogue for that very reason.
I love that phrasing, that “dialogue leads to discovery.” Why do you think it is difficult for people to understand that idea and then in turn actually have the conversations that are needed?
I think because it will unveil impure motives. We cannot forget the context of this conversation and what has caused it. People that know me, know I am not anti-police, but with some of them there is lawlessness, and the police around the country are a fraternity – they protect each other; but we should not have the backs of murders. I just think we need to recognize the precipitated. Those officers denied George Floyd of his civil rights and of his life. So, I think when people talk about the looters they are trying to shift the conversation in a way that is not helpful for us as a nation. It is an ingenious insult to do so. We should all be asking ourselves “Is it more important to defend people who have lost their lives or is it more important to somehow shed light and deal with people who pillage and destroy property?” I think the evil those men displayed is what we should be discussing, because it precipitated the looting, it precipitated the protesting. it precipitated the recent deaths of innocent Black people. I think it is shameful when the destruction of property gets more attention than the destruction of human life. In my view, no ra-
tional human being supports violence in any form, but if one talks about the looters first, it is a sign of where that person’s heart is. And as a Pastor, I want to know where people’s hearts are.
George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade's deaths are only four of the most recent examples of the racial injustice Black people in America face every day. I’d love for you to expand on the idea that these aren’t isolated events, but more of a tipping point perhaps.
It is my view that the arrogance Derek Chauvin showed when he murdered George Floyd really got shoved into the gut of most of us. It isn’t just Black people saying enough is enough, it is multiracial. And that is what we have needed, we needed a concerted effort. I think there are a lot of people, in politics and not, that want division in the country and they’re doing a pretty good job at it. But, I think the amount of people who are speaking to this now is the difference. I don’t want this world for my grandchildren and my children, and I pray for that. I believe God has mobilized those who have a conscience, sound reasoning, and compassion for others around the country and that is what we are seeing. It is not just a Black movement anymore, it is an American movement to seek real change.
What role do you feel the church can play in the fight for equality?
The church is the light of the world, that is what Jesus calls us, and I think the church has been woeful in this. I think church leaders need to make a full denunciation of this, but they’ve yet to do that. But, I think if they don’t give a denunciation of what is going on, they’ll be left out. I think unlike our predecessors in Christianity, we now have access to press in a way we’ve never had before, and some even have access to lawmakers and congressmen and senators and you can use that. Those that have access, in my opinion, should use that access for righteousness, rather than for their own personal benefit, and too many evangelicals are currying favor to power rather than speaking to it. I think the church has failed miserably because you have these large churches with big names and followings, and if these guys would do their jobs, it would mean
so much. They have access and you can make an immediate impact and make a great difference in advancing the call for justice and righteousness. God’s throne is built on righteousness and justice and scriptures tell us that when the righteous rule, the people will rejoice. So we need good leaders in that aspect and not to fan the flame of racism and injustices.
What do you think of complacency in a time like this?
I think complacency in this hour is a crime against humanity. Complacency is complicity with those who pose an existential threat. We can’t say this conduct is not an existential threat to Black people because they are senselessly dying at a much higher rate and they are innocent. To be complacent is to be complicit.
Is there a message you want to relay to anyone reading this and willing to learn?
To the Christian community, I want to say that you must find in Jesus Christ the strength in all that is needed, the strength to do it, the wisdom to do it, the understanding to do what is necessary. Because Jesus Christ came into a hostile environment and the system that was, was an existential threat to him, from his birth. So, I identify with Jesus in that. So I would say, we cannot sit on the pews and say amen because somebody told us about a story from 3,000 years ago, but won’t say amen to justice and righteousness and equality in our present day.
Outside of that, I think together we stand and divided we will fall. I would say do not stand with a lie, because the truth will always win out and that we must have dialogue. Do not be insensitive to pain, because the pain of another could one day be yours. I would also suggest to read Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's Letter from Birmingham Jail and that might help your perspective. Always ask questions, train your children to be fair-minded, and let your voice be heard. And, if your ladder is leaning against the wrong wall, this is a good time to change walls.

The EksoGT ™ Robotic Exoskeleton
As part of our commitment to rehabilitation, PAM Rehabilitation Hospital of Corpus Christi uses cutting-edge technology to help patients regain their strength, mobility, confidence, and freedom. The EksoGT™ robotic exoskeleton is the first exoskeleton indicated for stroke and spinal cord injury rehabilitation. The wearable device augments strength to help these patients stand and relearn to walk, improving their step patterns, weight shifting, and posture. PAM Rehabilitation Hospital of Corpus Christi is using the device to mobilize patients earlier in their rehabilitation.
Each year, as many as 15 million individuals suffer a stroke and 500,000 experience a spinal cord injury. Early mobilization is especially beneficial for stroke recovery. Gait training with this exoskeleton suit is one of the latest advancements in stroke treatment and neurorehab in general.
Clinical research suggests that including EksoGT gait training during inpatient rehabilitation can improve patients’ gait speed and walking distance. Most patients take an average of 400 steps their first-time training in the device. It is the most clinically used exoskeleton and patients around the world have taken over 100 million steps and counting.
LEGENDARY
SOUTH TEXAS MUSIC WALK OF FAME INDUCTS ITS FINAL STAR
BY: KIRBY TELLO
The pebbled walkway surrounding Water Street Market is home to the South Texas Music Walk of Fame – referred to fondly as “The Walk.” It opened in 2004 as a privately funded gift from Water Street Market owner Brad Lomax, to honor the 20th anniversary of the group’s first restaurant opening in Downtown Corpus Christi. The market itself has long since been a place where locals love to gather for fresh seafood, music, and good ol’ coastal hospitality.
To know the market is to know the music scene that defines this part of the bay. And for music makers, being a part of the world of sound that is the Executive Surf Club is a rite of passage. In fulfilling the market’s overall vision, commemorating South Texas’ rich history through constructing The Walk was a fitting sentiment adding to the texture of our city’s musical landscape.
Sue Donahoe is the founder of the South Texas Music Walk of Fame, and worked in conjunction with Lomax to see the project come to fruition. In its 16th year, the Walk is capping its inductees at 100 stars. “Why 100 stars?” asks Donahoe. “We are running out of room! The courtyard is full – so full, in fact, that the stars are competing with tables and palm trees for real estate.” As such, Donahoe feels that the Walk is now “complete” … but that is not to suggest that there are only 100 talented musicians in South Texas worthy of this honor.
“Here are represented musicians, songwriters, producers, and performers of all styles of music, from the early 1900s through today, from San Antonio to the southern tip of Texas,” explains
Donahoe. The artists on the Walk represent the core of South Texas’ rich and diverse music scene.
Embodying a wide variety of genres across multiple eras, candidates considered for induction must meet a select standard that exceeds the norm. Being a maker of music is only the tip of the iceberg. Artists considered for induction are required to be documented and vetted as having made a significant contribution to our region’s music legacy – either by their fame and success, bringing the focus of the world onto South Texas, or by contributing so deeply to the region that their local light outshines the awards of others, said Donahoe. Above all, an artist “must be a good citizen.”
While the Walk is already a local landmark, the potential for its impact is truly just beginning. Recognition is especially strong during the annual induction ceremony, which takes place every year on the first Friday in June. This year, seven stars will join the ranks – as opposed to the standard six – to complete the 100. Year-round, the Walk is always open, always free, and led solely by the work of volunteers. It goes without saying that it’s a major attraction for locals and tourists, but even after 17 years, the Walk has not been able to be formally categorized as such.
“Only when we stop adding stars will it be treated as a public attraction, rather than an annual event,” says Donahoe. “Only when it finishes can we begin to look for ways to enhance the Walk as a tourist attraction and educational site. Such possibilities include a walking tour, providing info about each artist, and
LEGENDARY OUTRO
[the creation of] a book about the stars represented there and about all the nominees, whose names will be honored in those pages, and who, hopefully, will be given a nod by future press.”
Keeping it local (and bayside), each star is handcrafted by the local ceramists at Aloe Tile Works, family-owned and operated in the Coastal Bend for more than 20 years. They are known for their custom designs and master artistry in ceramics, and have a special process for creating their tiles that includes drawing inspiration from the community – things like music, the ocean, history, greenery, people – with the ultimate goal of weaving parts of themselves into each tile, and helping the recipient find themselves in the clay, as well. Aloe Tile Works has partnered with the South Texas Music Hall of Fame from the very beginning, lending their blended approach of classic ceramic style and contemporary design to make the stars feel personal, coastal, and timeless throughout the years.
While each star has a uniform layout so that all look relatively similar, their placement was planned – in the beginning. For the first 10 or 12 years, the Selection Committee deliberately placed stars so that a variety of genre and era was represented from any viewpoint. Recently, stars have had to be placed wherever there was room.
The question of why the stars do not spread farther than Water Street Market comes up quite often. “Although city sidewalks and other courtyards may, someday, be offered, the Selection Committee feels that to extend the Walk physically would be a
mistake,” Donahoe explains. The immaculate care given to the Walk by its community volunteers is set at a high standard, and the Committee does not feel that the city should be responsible for following those guidelines. When it becomes an official public attraction, however, that could change.
Similar to nearly all businesses and organizations, Donahoe is having to shift gears in her plans for the final induction ceremony due to restrictions related to COVID-19. Even though the first Friday of June celebration was not possible this year, the Walk’s final bow will take place later this year, when the selection committee “feels it is safe to gather a large crowd that includes as many artists being inducted as possible,” Donahoe notes.
The purpose of the South Texas Music Walk of Fame has always been and continues to be a celebration of the depth and diversity of our region’s music. With the final inductees added among the stars, the mission of the Walk lives on. And for the people who have cared for the Walk for 17 years, the most important thing is for this gift to remain a source of joy for the community. “The Walk has already helped to inspire new and exciting events and organizations that celebrate our region’s art,” says Donahoe. Thus, the closing of this chapter does not signify a true ending. Instead, it is the catalyst in honoring the legacy of South Texas musicians in a profound and indelible way.

Healthcare HEROES
HOW FRONT-LINE WORKERS ARE PROVIDING NECESSARY CARE THROUGHOUT COVID-19
BY: ALEXIS MAYS PHOTO BY: LILLIAN REITZ
We are living in history. COVID-19 turned the world upside-down this year, and it has forever changed life in many ways, for many people. Throughout the pandemic, many temporarily closed their doors as everyone sought to flatten the curve. However, essential businesses had to find ways to continue operating. And fearless front line workers will forever be remembered as our bravest heroes.
Countless stories have poured in from across the world about the selfless care that doctors, nurses, paramedics, and all necessary workers give each day. Because when it comes to managing COVID-19 in healthcare settings, from ambulances to hospitals, care had to be taken to the next level.
Micki Hauser has been a registered nurse for more than 25 years, most of which were in critical care. Hauser’s career led her to become a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) over the past 10 years, and she spent the last few years as CNO at Post Acute Medical Rehabilitation and Long-Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH) of Corpus Christi.
Life-changing care is provided every minute at Post Acute, from caring for those who are acutely ill to providing rehabilitation needed to function in daily life. These are services that patients cannot live without, and Hauser explained that’s why they began planning and preparing long before positive cases were confirmed in South Texas.
“Even when COVID-19 seemed very far away, we asked ourselves, ‘Are we ready for that?’ And we began preparing.”
It was critical that they ensured people could still receive occupational, physical, and speech therapy. Because if someone misses or terminates their care, Hauser said, it has dire health consequences.
“Without rehab, the level of debilitation that occurs is profound,” Hauser says. “Rehab provides that strengthening and endurance building to be able to return people to their home and their daily lives. Inactivity means you can lose the ability to do basic things, such as moving from the living room to the bathroom, or even having the ability to stand up.”
Hauser described how their team pivoted in these new times: “Our company formed an EMA – emergency management agency – and the team provided a day-by-day, sometimes hour-by-hour, update of the information and resources we’d need to continue providing care.”
From masks to goggles to equipment and technology, the agency ensured the Post Acute hospitals and clinicians had what they needed to provide care. This also meant installing increased safety measures.
“As the virus ramped up, we ramped up restrictions of visitors. That was, probably, the hardest part. We’re in the business of caring for people, and we know part of that healing process very intimately involves family, and having the family unit together. People heal better when their families are with them,” she says – which is why they adapted to the situation, using glass separators and video calls to ensure families stayed connected with their loved ones and could receive updates from doctors. These alternatives kept people connected during a situation that could have created more distance. As Hauser says, “Just because we’re separated, doesn’t mean we’re not together.” In fact, Hauser knows that amid all the social distancing, this time has also brought everyone closer together.
“My hope and inspiration comes from watching and working with my team.” Hauser says. “The camaraderie, the teamwork, the way we’ve come together to deliver care is inspiring. Our teamwork means they’re not alone, and I’m not alone.”
It wasn’t just families of patients, but also families of the staff that were remembered. The Post Acute team sent letters to family members of the nursing staff to thank them for supporting each of the mothers, fathers, spouses, and more as they worked on the front lines for those in need.
The dedication and sacrifice of healthcare workers changes all lives, and as Hauser explained, the benefits are felt both ways.
“Rehab means we can return people to their homes. It is truly one of the most gratifying things for us to see someone able to return to the place they love.”
Because for Hauser, healthcare is equally a passion and a calling.
“I am so proud to be in a servant industry, and not only serve the patients, but also care for the people who are caring for patients.”
We at The Bend Magazine recognize, honor, and thank all front line workers for their service and care throughout this time.

SENIOR WRITER KIRBY TELLO BREAKS DOWN HER SELF-CARE ROUTINE AND HOW BECOMING A NEW MOM HAS REINFORCED HER PRIORITIES
BY: KIRBY TELLO PHOTOS BY: LILLIAN REITZ
I am a writer, marketing professional, and part owner of a nonprofit organization. My most recent job title, however, is “mother” – the role of which I am most terrified and which I am most honored to accept. I have two speeds: go go go and no no no. Meaning, I am a huge homebody, and when I am home, the world is essentially shut off. Over the years, my beauty routine has gotten smaller and smaller for lack of time and lack of interest in fussing around with a ton of products. However, after I turned 30 (I am now 33 years old), I began to realize some changes in my skin that meant I could no longer keep scaling product usage down. My skin went from normal to oily in my 20s to very dry and sensitive, thus creating more oil, in my 30s.
I have never been one to wear a lot of makeup, mostly because I am never sure if I am doing it right. And quite honestly, I see how much joy it brings so many people to do their face for the day, and I have never been able to grasp that joy with makeup. However, I do find skincare absolutely delightful, and have made a point to create a daytime and nighttime regimen that not only gives my skin the nutrients it needs, but also makes my mind feel clear and my soul feel happy and settled.
Beauty and self-care are so important to me. I do not always feel that I have the time to indulge in either, especially now being a mom to a little girl. But since I do have a little girl, I think it is important to be an example for her for what self-care looks like and how essential it is for women to prioritize their needs. It will forever be a work in progress, but with my daughter’s lens uniquely focused on me, I do my best to exude beauty, self-care, and body positivity.
Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser
This is one of three facial cleansers I use in rotation. Since my skin has shifted from oily to dry and back again, I have to be careful not to use cleansers that have alcohol in them. This product is really great about not stripping the skin of all of its oils. Seems counterintuitive for the end result I am trying to achieve, but I was basically “today years old” when I discovered that the drier the skin, the heavier the oil production. Cetaphil probably gets the most love of the three these days, but especially in the winter. Now that summer is here, I will add a cleanser that has more of a squeaky-clean feeling.

Liquid Neutrogena Fragrance-Free Gentle Facial Cleanser with Glycerin, Hypoallergenic & Oil-Free Mild Face Wash

A girl cannot walk around town kicking butt and taking names with chapped lips. I use Maybelline’s Baby Lips in “Cherry Me,” which has a reddish tint to provide a little color while moisturizing my pout.

Burt's Bees Detoxifying Charcoal Sheet Mask & Burt’s Bees Hydrating Sheet Mask
Here is where the self-care really kicks in. Applying a single-use sheet mask before bed is just delightful. Whenever I am at H-E-B I snag a few of these and save them for when I need a little boost of relaxation. And for just around three bucks, it is a small indulgence that has a major impact for perking up my mood.

Cleanlogic Exfoliating Stretch Bath & Shower Gloves
There is a feeling of being clean and then there is being CLEAN. These gloves do the latter. Plus, they ensure that my body gets exfoliated on a daily basis without having to use an additional product, so it saves me some much-needed time.

Eva Naturals Skin Clearing Serum +Vitamin C
I finally jumped on the serum bandwagon. When I got pregnant last year, I really noticed a difference in the integrity of my skin. I was looking to gain back a more even and brighter skin tone while putting moisture and nutrients back into my pores. I came across Eva Naturals and scoured through reviews to make sure it was a good product for my skin type. I have been using this serum for close to a year now, and really could not be happier. Not only does it work to hydrate the skin, I also love the ritual of applying it. It is so soothing and smells yummy.

NIVEA FOR MEN Sensitive Post Shave Balm
This is my secret weapon. If you have oily skin and are in need of a moisturizer that does not make your skin oilier, post shave balm is it! It is very lightweight and absorbs quickly into our pores without clogging them. For the hot and humid weather we get on the coast, this product is a lifesaver. (Note: If you live with a man, he will start to use this product and assume he purchased it for himself. Therefore, just buy two and hide yours somewhere safe.)

ISave Your Natural Tooth!
Has your dentist told you that you need root canal treatment?
If so, you’re not alone. Millions of teeth are treated and saved each year with root canal, or endodontic, treatment. Watch our videos at southtexasendo.com to learn more!
nside the tooth, under the white enamel and a hard layer called the dentin, is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, and helps to grow the root of your tooth during development. In a fully developed tooth, the tooth can survive without the pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it. Contrary to jokes about the matter, modern endodontic treatment is very similar to having a routine filling and usually can be completed in one or two appointments, depending on the condition of your tooth and your personal circumstances. You can expect a comfortable experience during and after your appointment. We also provide nitrous, oral and IV sedation for the anxious patient.
If you are given a choice between root canal treatment or tooth extraction, always choose root canal treatment. Dentistry has yet to produce a denture, bridge or implant that looks, feels and functions as well as a natural tooth. Never choose extraction because you think it will be quicker! Endodontic treatments generally require one to two visits lasting less than an hour each. An extraction requires one visit, but the denture, bridge or implant will require several additional visits with your dentist. Never choose extraction because you think it will be cheaper! When a natural tooth is extracted, it must be replaced with an artificial tooth to prevent other teeth from shifting, and to prevent future dental problems. The cost of a denture, bridge or implant, plus the extraction, often is higher than the cost of an endodontic procedure that would save the tooth for years to come. Most dental insurance plans cover endodontic treatment.

Saving the natural tooth with root canal treatment has many advantages such as:

OLD WORLD ELEGANCE
ARANSAS PASS HOME EXUDES REGAL ENGLISH VIBES THROUGH NEUTRAL PALETTES AND ANTIQUES
BY: JAQUELINE GONZALEZ PHOTOS BY: JASON PAGE
Chuck and his wife, Donakay, had been on the hunt for the perfect home for 10 years before 2006, when they found the ideal lot located in Pelican Cove Subdivision in Aransas Pass. The size of the lot and location in close proximity to a canal made it the right spot for them to build their home.
They broke ground for construction in 2006, and a year and a half later, their home was ready to move in. They had quite the journey with the design of this home, though. The architect they were working with had the right idea, but the concept of the house was reversed on the blueprints. Chuck noticed that the idea he had in mind to maximize sunlight was not being executed well, and was going to create an overall darkness in the house. Instead, he and Donakay chose to start from scratch and redesign the home with unique qualities that encompassed features from past homes in which they lived. They’ve owned homes all over the United States prior to building this home, and each had elements that they missed – so what better way to bring them back than incorporating them into one unique design?
Chuck and Donakay wanted a large home that displayed a castle look, portraying European style with an Old English flair, so they opted for stones over brick for the outside of their home. The main house is built towards the back of the lot, with a garage and guest house toward the front. Although the home is near the water, they didn’t want tropical island or coastal décor; they wanted a tall, ornate, regal aesthetic – which was achieved by 8-foot-high walls that maximize privacy.
They worked with an interior decorator from Ethan Allen to create the graceful feel of the living room’s neutral shades and country French décor. The various prints and materials offer a cozy feel, while the red couches give the area an energetic, bold pop of color. The extravagant large-scale antique lighting sets the tone by brushing the living area with timeless taste.
The ornate stonework and granite accents in the kitchen provide a European look to the area, making this space the heart of the home.
The oversized granite island sits atop a stone stand with ornate wooden corbels used to hold up the granite. Although structurally, they’re just holding up the island, Chuck didn’t just want something basic. He wanted a design that would stand out and vibe well with the rest of the décor, so they opted for corbels, which are the perfect castle-like accessory. The island opens to the formal dining and living room, so guests have the perfect open floor plan for communication no matter which room they’re in. While Chuck and Donakay were choosing the tiles, stonework, and back splashes that make this kitchen so eye-catching, they came across a book of murals that included the gorgeous peacock mosaic mural hanging above the stove. The area is also perfect for entertaining large crowds due to the vast selection of appliances including three ovens, a large gas range, and a warming drawer.
The stairs in the living area lead to a small space on the second floor perfect for a small gathering or a kid’s area. Chuck and Donakay

spruced it up by adding a few slot machines for their perfect at-home Las Vegas space. Other areas on the second floor provide perfect play spaces for their grandchildren, especially for Chuck and his granddaughter to host tea parties with dolls.
The backyard is a South Texas paradise, and is split into two different areas: the pool and the ocean. The pool area features a deck around the 32 x 16 foot, 8-foot-deep pool, and a courtyard. The courtyard consists of a 20x30 area where they grow plants, and doubles as an ecosystem. Chuck and Donakay really enjoy gardening and the house has many plants, both indoor and outdoor. The ocean side of the outdoor paradise features a screened-in back porch with a sitting area perfect for enjoying the outdoors during any kind of weather. The stairs wrapping around this area lead to a boat lift, jet ski lifts, and fish cleaning station overlooking the canal.
The entire aesthetic of the home is ornate yet welcoming, and it’s perfect for gatherings of family and friends, or just for spending some alone time relaxing in the pool.

Here at Braselton Homes, our hard work in building beautiful homes and neighborhoods for our friends and neighbors to live in is important. But we also take our commitment to our local community very seriously. We call this commitment community building, and, perhaps the most important aspect of our community building effort is supporting, both financially and with our time, the kids and schools of Corpus Christi. And, as the third generation of my family building homes in the Coastal Bend, I know how important our local schools and school children are to the future of our community.
We also support higher education. The Braselton Family and Braselton Homes has endowed multiple scholarships at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, to give our future leaders the support they need to shine. The scholarships, in the College of Business, are specifically designed to foster entrepreneurship and leadership for those students who receive them. We know that this investment in the students of today is an investment in the future of our area. These students will be the business leaders of tomorrow that will lead us into the bright future we see ahead.
The importance of the kids and their schools goes to the very core of our mission; when we design a neighborhood, and build a community, access to the local school is paramount. Many of our neighborhoods are built within walking distance of their neighborhood school including: Royal Oaks, near Tuloso- Midway Primary School, the Cottages at the Park, near Dawson Elementary and Grant Middle School, London Towne, near London ISD and Parkside Cottages near Mireles Elementary School. This proximity to
school makes the school part of the fabric of the life of the family, eliminating stressful commutes and giving parents and kids a much less hectic morning and evening ….and more time with each other to decompress after a long day.
Additionally, the very design of our neighborhoods, and homes, focuses not only on the schools, but also on the kids that will live there. When we Build a new community, we work to design in access to parks, playgrounds, and walking/biking trails. Rancho Vista is built around a park system, featuring a huge playground, 2 lakes, fountains, and walking trails, throughout the entire neighborhood. Our homes are designed for families, with floor plans organized with large kids bedrooms, upstairs “bonus rooms,” kids playrooms, and study nooks, so that boisterous family time, as well as quiet study time, are an easy part of everyday living.
We are proud of our community building efforts, and of our premiere neighborhoods and homes; building a better Coastal Bend is what we strive to do.
We would love to have you visit us at a Braselton Neighborhood yourself, and see the homes we have to offer. We have 7 fully furnished Model Homes, with another one opening later this month, all around the Corpus Christi Bay Area. Whether you are looking for a house in the $160s, or the $460s, we have a Braselton Home for you. For more information and directions, please visit us at Brasletonhomes.com

GROWING UP
Bougainvillea require at least eight hours full sun per day to fully flower. Protect from north wind to prevent freeze damage. Grows to 10’ tall with spread of 15’. Space at least 6’ apart. Any soil; must have good drainage. Water every two weeks until established, then deeply water once per month. No fertilizer; nitrogen inhibits blooms. Add 2 pounds compost and 2 cups wood ash at base of plant each spring.
PROFILING
Bougainvillea flower from spring into winter in colors of red, yellow, white, orange, pink, or purple. Bougainvillea can be planted as a hedge, for ground cover, in pots, or as climbing vines. Full-grown vines require strong support or trellis. Prune in March to desired shape. All varieties have sharp thorns. To “trick” plant into blooming, hold back water to concentrate sugars in the leaves, which triggers blooms, then water as normal.
the color of SUMMER
BY: JUSTIN BUTTS
Many plants wilt, shrivel, and die in the burning heat of a South Texas summer. But one heat-loving plant stands above all others for its stunning summer blooms: the beautiful bougainvillea.
Bougainvillea can’t get too much sun or heat. More sun equals more blooms for bougainvillea; and the hotter the weather, the brighter its colors. Well-established, mature bougainvillea are very drought tolerant. A spell of hot, dry weather actually increases the flowers on the plant.
Bougainvillea have gorgeous flowers, but they also have sharp thorns. If you have a backyard fence that you want no one ever to climb, plant bougainvillea every six feet along the base of the fence. The massive, thorny vines will take over the fence and even spill to the other side.
Anyone who tries to jump that fence will be captured in your bougainvillea hedge or filleted trying to get out!
That also means that a bougainvillea planted in a high traffic area is likely to catch you or your guests on its thorns. That dainty little potted plant from the nursery, if well-tended, will grow into a massive vining spread, so make sure to locate bougainvillea away from paths, doorways, and places where kids play.
Give your bougainvillea a sturdy structure if you want it to climb. Once a bougainvillea reaches its full height, spread, and weight, you will not easily be able to access the support or trellis to reinforce or repair it. Prune bougainvillea each March to achieve any shape – even a small tree.
LOCAL RECS
No other plant says summer in South Texas better than Bougainvillea. It can be planted in a big clay pot or in the ground. We love them for their brilliant color and free form. We place bougainvillea in designs where there is plenty of room to spread, good drainage and full sun. They are great cascading over walls or anchoring the corner of a sunny backyard.
- Sally Gill @gills.corpus
FUN FACTS
The richly colored red or purple blooms on bougainvillea are not actually flowers; they are called bracts. The tiny yellow or white flowers in the center of the colorful bracts are the true flowers. Bracts evolved their bright colors and welcoming shapes to attract pollinators, such as bees and hummingbirds, to the miniscule yellow flowers. Bougainvillea plant breeders have ingeniously developed many colors of bracts to sell more plants – including, after many years of effort, blue!

GLAM HOME OFFICE MADE EASY
BY:
MONICA BENAVIDEZ
productivity whether you work/study from home or manage a household.
Even if you can’t devote an entire room to an office, you can carve out space for one in a closet or an empty corner with some wall space.
My home office is where I spend a ton of time working on my home décor line, my interior design blog, and projects for my day job. I’ve surrounded myself with glam, floral décor that inspires me, and functional furniture pieces that keep office supplies hidden and organized.
FUNCTIONAL STYLE
Garage sales, Facebook Marketplace, thrift markets, and dollar stores are perfect for finding bargains to create a stylish home office. The memo board behind my desk was a $10 picture frame before I added foam core board.
If your home office lacks windows, I suggest adding a mirror to reflect light and using daylight bulbs in a lamp to add some brightness.
Corral items using trays or baskets to keep useful supplies on hand but tidy.
Soft touches such as curtains, pillows, throw blankets, and rugs add warmth, comfort, color and pattern to an area. They create layers in your décor that will make any space feel more polished.
To increase storage in small home office spaces, use the walls available to you. Installing wall shelves is an easy, beginner-friendly project.
When designing this space, I opted for the largest desk I could fit, and I do not regret that decision. Once I had the dimensions of the desk, the other supporting pieces fell into place. If you’re creating an office, start with your desk and make it as large as your space can reasonably accommodate.
Overall, creating a home office space is an opportunity to have fun and get creative. I like repurposing items (for example: candle holders, shoe boxes, vases) to hold office supplies, creating oversized wall art using gift wrap or wallpaper, and revamping old furniture with paint to add style.

Bright Lights, BAY CITY
REVITALIZING ARTS AND CULTURE IN DOWNTOWN CORPUS CHRISTI
BY: EMMA COMERY PHOTOS BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES
From the bayfront Miradores to the parapets of the Art Center, Shoreline Drive pops against the sparkling background of the bay…postcard perfect. But as beautiful as our city is, we all know that other corners of downtown can feel a little quiet sometimes. Corpus Christi is full of life, tradition, ingenuity, and community spirit, but the empty storefronts and weathered historic buildings of downtown don’t reflect that. In recent years, innovative entrepreneurs, artists, and organizations have been breathing new life into the older streets of downtown, turning an old bus station into one of our trendiest patio bars, building luxury apartments, and beautifying our streets with murals. Downtown has made big strides, but there’s still work to be done.
That’s where the Downtown Revitalization Alliance comes in. Led by a board of former Downtown Management District employees, community leaders, and creatives, the Alliance is the nonprofit arm of the Downtown Management District. Though this Alliance
was founded in 2012, it was inactive for several years and recently revitalized itself thanks to the initiative of Downtown Management District Executive Director Alyssa Barrera-Mason. After the creation of the cultural district, Barrera-Mason and her team saw the opportunity to reactivate the 501(c)3 and align it to DMD’s arts and culture initiatives. “There are some things that are reasonable to spend on with those dollars, but the arts are not the most core service activities,” Barrera-Mason explains. “When we talk with potential contributors, they’re more interested in a nonprofit than a municipality, so the 501(c)3 is a tool to garner resources toward revitalization.”
The Alliance’s mission is to create a culture and environment that attract businesses and residents, and reflect the creative brilliance of the community. “Arts and culture is the heartbeat of your community,” says Barrera-Mason. “The downtown is the face of your city and needs to reflect your people and their creativity.”
Some of the Alliance’s recent projects include the electrical box murals dotting the streets, and the popular Downtown Corpus Christi Coloring Book, which raised money to support revitalization efforts. Ensuring that Corpus Christians can earn a living as artists in the community is important to the Alliance. “I’m not an artist,” Barrera-Mason says, “but I definitely have respect for artists, and I’ll utilize my position to advance our community and the creative members of our community.”
Currently the Alliance’s biggest endeavor is revamping Artesian Park. “Artesian Park is the third oldest park in Texas, and the oldest piece of public property in our city,” Barrera-Mason says. “So why isn’t that on the list of top ten things to do in our city?” Maximizing Artesian Park has long been a goal for the city, but “plans were often thwarted by dreams that got too big.” So the Alliance is taking things one step at a time. They started by securing sponsorships for electricity in the park, which allowed them to light up the trees for the holidays. Next, they repaired the pergola, and recently were allocated $150,000 from the city for improvements, such as landscaping. The vision, says Barrera-Mason, is “a town square, a widely-utilized public space for tourists and resident pride.”
If that vision is any indication of how the Alliance may lead the way toward a fully revitalized Downtown, then we are in good hands, indeed.

Farm to Table atYour Doorstep
DAGON PRODUCE FEATURES HOME DELIVERY OF LOCALLY SOURCED GOODNESS
BY: JESSIE MONSIVAIS
PHOTOS BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES
With a firm belief in the benefits of small-scale urban farming, Dagon Produce is offering a new service that delivers fresh local produce to your doorstep. Working for the local farmer, Joel Trevino produces baskets with fruits and vegetables harvested directly from local farms here in the Coastal Bend. Now the owner and curator behind Dagon Produce, Trevino began his journey while working for Grow Local South Texas. By helping out with the Farmer's Markets, Trevino said he got to know a number of the farmers very well. Noticing a need for an outlet allowing farmers to share their produce with restaurants to avoid throwing away large amounts of produce that didn't sell, Trevino created Dagon Produce to help farmers out.
What started out as a vision of making local food more accessible to prevent waste quickly expanded into a farmhouse delivery service. The business rapidly proliferated to producing 40 to 50 baskets a week, meeting the needs of both local restaurants and residents.
"December was the first time I started making baskets. Since then, it's picked up a lot. People have come to know that this is going on," says Trevino. "I think that as Corpus progresses, the whole farm to table movement is far from over. Speaking with some local chefs, they would love to be able to have local produce in the restaurants. I'm hoping to provide that outlet for farmers to continue growing and deliver their food to the local restaurant scene, which helps out the farmers and the local economy."
Our way of doing business is designed to get to know you and your dreams. That’s something you won’t get from a website. From the first step until the last, we’ll be there through each milestone. Let’s talk today, and begin the journey to your dream home. We’ll be with you all the way.
There’s nothing like the smell of freshly cut grass or hay in the morning, or the scent of newly tilled earth in a field or garden bed. There’s a quality in the air as you head out on your John Deere Tractor, Gator™ Utility Vehicle or ZTrak™ mower. It’s that same quality that inspires us to build machines that can keep up with you—lasting from sun-up to sun-down, day after day, year after year.
Dagon Produce offers three different sizes of baskets for small, medium, and large families. The Regular, Double, and Chef basket provide seasonal produce, proteins, and fruits sourced from at least seven local farms. The Double, Dagon’s original basket, includes plenty of food for families of four to last for the week. The Regular basket provides half that amount, making it feasible for families of two. Lastly, the Chef basket contains culinary ingredients that resemble those seen in network cooking competitions. In fact, Trevino shared, Chef Tony from The Exchange picks up two Chef baskets and does a live Facebook challenge on Thursdays with other chefs in the community, to cook using the local ingredients.
"I think it's important because this stuff is grown here in our soil. We get a lot of the nutrients from everything that's around us. Also, you can look at it environmentally, too. It's not taking 18-wheelers driving across the country to bring products to us. You can grow a lot of the stuff that the farmers grow here in South Texas,'" says Trevino.
Trevino said his goal is to encourage locals to order baskets or shop at the Farmer's Market. "It's more of a community thing. If it wasn't for the community accepting this and wanting farm-to-table produce, farmers would just do the same old thing; just growing enough for the farmer’s market, and that's it."
Eager to help locals cultivate a deeper understanding of local food and empower them to be a part of the process, Dagon Produce looks forward to partnering with other groups to focus on educating the community about local gardening and offer local farm tours. With Dagon Produce, you can feed nutritious meals to your family with confidence, knowing that all the products were grown, raised, and produced right here.

Celebrations in a COVID-19 WORLD

Downsizing. Hosting a mini or "micro" event is beautiful way to honor or celebrate a loved one. You can still incorporate your desired décor elements and set a scene even if your original venue and guest list look different.
Backyard Party. Outdoor events and downsized guest lists are the new norm in the event world. A spacious backyard provides a blank canvas to create a stunning celebration while keeping social distancing in mind. Taking your indoor event outside is a great way to shift the celebrations.
parting words
As new ideas and ways to celebrate circulate the internet, event planners, such as myself, must create methods to provide a new and safe way to host events. With new regulations and the re-opening of the state, guidelines are enacted to keep guests and venues safe. So, preparing an event takes on a whole new meaning these days, if you want the celebration to continue. Finding new ways to do this is all part of the creative process!
tables simple and small, seating guests as family units and requiring guests to wear masks and observe social distancing should be your number one rule. Seating no more than 6 to a table and keeping six feet of distance between each table is to be observed. Food handling must be full service by trained staff, which is protected by masks and gloves as well. Food buffets for now should be one sided and served by staff.

SUMMER
BRUNCHIN'
THREE RECIPES FOR A DELICIOUS WEEKEND
BY: JUSTIN & KAYLA BUTTS
PHOTOS BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES
We love slow Saturday mornings in the summer. No rushing through breakfast to get everyone out the door. If all goes well, we sleep in long enough to call it brunch.
A relaxing morning is nice for an easy omelet. Simple recipes place even more importance on using high-quality ingredients, so for this recipe, we recommend exclusively using pastured eggs. Grocery store eggs can’t compete with the rich flavor of pastured eggs. The labels and slogans on supermarket egg cartons are just clever words invented by the corporate marketing department; they don’t reflect the reality of the corporate farm. Pastured eggs from a local farm (or your own backyard!) don’t require these labels, because you can look across the fields and see the happy animals for yourself. You can’t help but taste the difference.
Let the eggs reach room temperature before cooking. Cold eggs straight out of the fridge take longer to cook in the pan, which makes for a tougher omelet. Whisk the eggs with a fork just until the colors combine and no more. Add a teaspoon of water before whisking to help the egg whites and yolks come together. The water will steam out in the pan and help the omelet cook a little faster.
For this recipe, we used jalapeño peppers, gorgeous tomatoes, and fragrant summer herbs as toppings simply because they were in season. Let your preference and what’s growing in the garden guide your toppings.
We should tell you that this three-egg omelet recipe makes a huge serving! You could easily split this omelet with the one you love to save room for the melons. And be sure to save room – these irresistible melons, harvested at the peak of ripeness, are the essence of summer sweetness.
Easy Vegetable Omelet
Makes 1 large omelet for sharing
PREP TIME: 7 minutes
TIME: 12 minutes
INGREDIENTS:
2 tbsp olive oil
1/2 sweet yellow onion, sliced
1 bell pepper, sliced 4-6 mushrooms, sliced
1/2 cup arugula or spinach
1/2 tsp salt
2 tbsp unsalted butter
3 eggs, brought to room temperature 1/4 cup cheddar cheese, shredded 1/4 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
DIRECTIONS:
Place an 8” non-stick pan over medium heat. Once hot, add olive oil. Add peppers to the oil once it begins to shimmer. Sauté onion and pepper slices for 3-4 minutes until beginning to become translucent. Add mushrooms and cook for 2 additional minutes. Transfer vegetable mixture to a clean plate.
Melt butter in the same pan. Meanwhile, beat eggs in a medium-sized bowl until they begin to froth. Add eggs to the butter once it has just started to become fragrant, before it turns brown. Rotate the pan in either direction until egg is evenly coating the bottom. Remove the omelet from heat. Sprinkle cheese evenly over the eggs. Sprinkle arugula/spinach over 2/3 of the egg, leaving 1/3 exposed. Immediately transfer reserved vegetables onto tender greens to finish cooking them. Using a rubber spatula, carefully loosen the edges of the egg. Tilting the pan over the serving plate, gently slide the omelet onto the plate, folding the exposed third over the vegetables. Garnish omelet with fresh vegetables and sliced avocado, salsa, or cilantro sour cream. and stir a final time before serving.
In this pizza recipe, the basil pesto brings an unexpected wave of freshness to the savory sausage. We like a thin crust so the resulting dish doesn’t become too heavy. Be ready for this brunch pizza to disappear fast.
We purchased the pan sausage from Turkey Hollow Farm of Cuero. They also offer spicy pan sausage, and even Italian sausage for different pizza occasions. The pork, pastured eggs, and every other ingredient for these recipes can be found at the Corpus Christi Downtown Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m.
Summer mornings are meant to be savored. These rich, savory, spicy, and sweet flavors of the farm are also meant to be savored. Shop ahead of time for excellent ingredients, and let your slow weekend morning begin with brunch perfection!
RECIPE
Pesto and Pan Sausage Pizza
Makes a 12” pizza
PREP TIME: 30 minutes
COOK TIME: 30 minutes
INGREDIENTS:
1/3 lb Italian or breakfast pan sausage
8 oz pizza dough
1/2 cup prepared pesto
3/4 cup mozzarella, shredded 5 cloves garlic, minced
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 500°F. Place a skillet over medium high heat. Once hot, add pan sausage, breaking it up into bite-sized crumbles using a wooden spoon. Continue to cook for 3-4 minutes until mostly cooked through, but still slightly pink in a few spots. Pork will finish cooking in the oven.
On a well-floured surface, roll out dough until 1/16” thick. Transfer to a sheet pan and pinch the outer edge of the dough to form a small crust. Spoon pesto onto dough, leaving some areas with a thicker coat. Cover surface with mozzarella. Top pizza with pan sausage and garlic. Cook for 10 minutes, or until crust is a golden brown and crisp.
Healthy Impact
BY: KYLIE COOPER PHOTOS BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES
Funky and creative flavors abound at Impact Nutrition. The local drink spot has become a neighborhood social gathering place for those looking for modern-nutrient and protein-based ingredients.
There is a specific emphasis on high energy and positive vibes, when it comes to both their brand as a whole and the environment the shop has created for their customers. Co-owners Rebekah Gonzalez and Lino Diaz started the shop for that very reason: to promote a healthier lifestyle for the Coastal Bend and help people feel good in the process.
Impact Nutrition’s menu is packed with flavorful drinks and bites that you can feel good about taking in. From energy and immunity teas to sugar-free coffee drinks and delicious shakes, their endless options aim to help customers feel refreshed and energized
throughout the day. The shop also serves up meal replacement shakes, healthier alternatives to energy drinks, protein coffee, specialty donuts, and fat burner shots, as well as tons of vegan and gluten-free options!
Not only have owners Gonzalez and Diaz committed to making sure the community feels at home in their shop, they’ve also made it a point to get involved in the local community and give back. Amid the height of COVID-19, Impact Nutrition operated with curbside pick-up and delivery options, but they wanted to do more – they wanted to give thanks to our essential workers.
The shop started a GoFundMe back in late March, aiming to supply first responders, grocery workers, medical staff, and other essential employees with delicious shakes packed with vitamins, minerals, and protein, as well
as energizing and immunity-boosting teas to help nourish and protect those who worked hard for the community during that time. Every dollar raised from community donations went to providing drinks to those working hard to keep our city safe and running.
The shop, being open for just about a year now, has quickly become a beloved spot for not only our health and fitness community, but for any local looking to enjoy a refreshing beverage. With the South Texas heat beaming down, a drink from Impact Nutrition will not only help cool you off, but make you feel good in the process!

MUST-TRY CAJUN FUSION SENSATIONS
BY: EMMA COMERY PHOTOS BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES
Crack. Bright red shell splitting in half. Golden butter dripping. Oh, the beautiful mess. The art of crawfish.
Maybe I’m being too fanciful, because David Lee and Elias Garza – owners of Mudbugs Cajun Ice House – will tell you that crawfish are just plain good eats.
A few years ago, the sushi chef and former Marine were just two friends hosting crawfish boils in their driveways for the neighbors. “We couldn’t find any restaurants around that had live crawfish,” recalls Lee, “even in season. So we would buy a couple bags and do it ourselves.” Upgrading from driveway boil friends to restaurant business partners seemed like a natural transition, so they converted an empty commercial space on Airline into a warm, elevated dining room and started building their menu.
Though deeply rooted in Cajun traditions, Mudbugs isn’t just bringing Louisiana fare to Texas. It’s bringing something new to the table. “My father is Chinese and my mother is Scotch-Irish,” says Lee. “So everything I cook is fusion, because I’m a fusion myself.” That means in addition to traditional Cajun crawfish with lots of spice, lemon, and garlic oil, you’ll also find Vietcajun crawfish (a style born out of Houston) tossed in a garlicky butter sauce, and Mudbugs’ own signature style served with their house butter. Because butter is never just butter.
While Lee, who also owns Rock & Rolls Sushi Lounge on the island (and one in Austin), oversees the menu with Chef Joe Andaverde, Garza runs the day-to-day of this Cajun-meets-Corpus gem. It’s a lot like his time in the Marines, he says. “Long hours, lots of hard work, lots of fun.”
From the polished cement floors and brick accent wall to the custom-built wood and pipe tables, Mudbugs feels a bit like a refined man cave. “We wanted industrial and elevated,” explains Lee, “because there’s this connotation that Cajun food is dirty, and we want to show that it’s for everyone.” Mudbugs isn’t a pile of fish and potatoes thrown onto a sheet of butcher paper. It’s a full bar, craft cocktails, Sunday football games … a place to entertain clients, catch up with the girls, or experience crawfish as a family.
During COVID-19, Lee and Garza provided free meals to nurses, supplied sack lunches to kids, and hosted Free Meal Tuesdays at all three of their restaurants. “For a while,” says Garza, “we turned it into a grocery store. We have a lot of elderly customers and we didn’t want them fighting the lines at H-E-B just to find out what they need is sold out. We had a lot of essentials here, so we wanted to help people.”
Now they are getting back to a regular schedule, and even launching their lunch hours, too. For Lee and Garza, Mudbugs is a place of community, an extension of their old driveway crawfish boils where old friends come together and new friends are made. They invest in that community, buying their crawfish from a local supplier and their alcohol from local retailers, and expanding the Corpus dining scene with some of the best Cajun food around.

Airmail Takes Flight in Corpus Christi
BY: JILLIAN BECQUET PHOTO COURTESY OF: CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LIBRARIES
When we drop a letter in the mail now, we know it may take varied forms of transportation to get to its destination, from the mail truck to a plane. But until the 1970s, post office patrons had to purchase a special airmail rate to ensure their delivery would get the quickest transport via airmail. Experimental airmail flights started in 1911, just eight years after the Wright brothers’ famous flight. After years of experiments and governmental red tape, the Post Office Department and the Army Signal Corps cooperated to begin scheduled airmail service, giving Army pilots needed flight practice.
By 1920, a transcontinental route was established, with mail flying by day and traveling by rail at night. This route reached many of
America’s large cities, with feeder lines reaching outward to places like St. Louis and Minneapolis. The service quickly modernized, adding overnight flights on planes equipped with luminescent instruments and navigational lights, before contracting out service to commercial aviation companies in 1926.
On June 1, 1932, Corpus Christi Postmaster Gilbert J. McGloin marked the occasion of Corpus Christi sending its first mail off for delivery via airplane, and posed with the pilot for a ceremonial handoff. Forty-five years after the arrival of the railroad in Corpus Christi and six years after the opening of the Port, airmail service even more strongly connected Corpus Christi’s residents to their fellow Texans, Americans, and the world.
