JS:
As far as home design goes, I truly want to see more skylights and/ or atriums built into residential homes. Popular in the '50s and '60s, this trend died out in the early '70s and has only barely made a resurgence, but mainly in commericial spaces such as hotels and office buildings.
GRAPHIC DESIGNER Lillian Meador
@benjaminsurfnskate
A trend I'd love to see return to interiors is slow and intentional decorating. Many are rushing through the process to be "done" rather than focusing on quality, timeless furnishings and decor. I would also love to see the death of open concept rooms. Give me defined, spacious rooms stat.
CG:
I’d like to see a shift to more sculptural, curvy furniture. We’re getting away from straight lines and are looking for comfort in our homes. Organic shapes and soft lines give a much-needed break from stark minimalism.

EDITOR’S LETTER
V.IX 4.22 THREE TAKEAWAYS
Where Our Stories Live What makes a house a home? More than tangible items, a home is a spirit and collection of memories — a shared sentiment that allows for a sense of belonging. The smell of a delicious dinner lingering from the kitchen; the sound of children’s laughter ringing down the hall; the feeling of a safe space to rest your head after a long day. In this month’s cover feature “A MidCentury Love Story” (PG. 34) Cecile Gottlich takes readers inside the doors of a breathtaking Mid-century Modern masterpiece built in 1958. More fascinating than the museumworthy furniture pieces housed inside and remarkable architectural design, though, is the story of how the Kane family manifested their dream home, and the memories they’ve made within its walls. Gottlich writes, “These thoughtfully curated details are not what truly make this home special. The Kanes poured their love into this home, and it’s evident.” Life and love were breathed into every corner, every space.
And while the Kanes’ abode houses a variety of iconic chairs and impeccable design details, the star of the couple’s dream home is the life lived therein. A similar sentiment is shared in this month’s Open House story, “The Pearl of Port A” (PG. 62). The homeowner said, “The biggest joy about this house is that it’s for creating good memories. I’ve had some of the absolute best memories with my family and dear friends in this home. And the house just adds to it.” Regardless of your home’s square footage, the art hanging on the walls or even the neighborhood it’s located in, I’d like to think this sentiment is a universal one. Because the fact of the matter is that our homes tell stories — our stories — and even when you move from one structure to the next, the narrative continues to be written. The tale might be centered on a particular space, but it’s also tied to the intangibles these spaces provide us with. As you flip through this month’s issue, my hope is that you’re encouraged to perhaps look at your own dwelling spaces in this way … and maybe gain a little interior design inspiration along the way. Lastly, I’d like to take a moment to introduce a new member of our team: As the founder and owner of her own full-service interior design firm, Cecile Gottlich knows a thing or two about a well-designed space. I am thrilled to welcome her onto our team of contributors as the curator of our Open House section, and cannot wait to see how she helps to elevate these pages each month.

The Power of 100 PHILANTHROPIC GROUP OF WOMEN MEETS QUARTERLY, CONTRIBUTES LOCALLY AND CONNECTS PERSONALLY TO BENEFIT CHARITIES IN THE COASTAL BEND BY: JACQUELINE GONZALEZ PHOTO BY: LILLIAN REITZ
W
hen women with shared goals answer a calling to serve the community they love, great things can happen. After Lauren Mims moved to Corpus Christi from Boerne, Texas, she began looking for ways to get connected in the philanthropic community. Many of these opportunities, however, required a time commitment that was not feasible for a mother of four small children, so when she learned of a philanthropic group in the Hill Country consisting of 100+ women who donate quarterly to a charity, she knew this was the perfect way to give back to the Coastal Bend. As Mims gathered ideas, she immediately thought of her friend, Kristen Collins, who was also looking for ways to get involved. Collins, originally from California, fell in love with the Coastal Bend when she moved here seven years ago — but with two small children, she was also struggling with demanding time constraints. When Mims presented her idea for the Power of 100, Collins knew this was a great opportunity for the Coastal Bend, and they both set forth to create the sisterhood of women that would soon become 100 Women of the Coastal Bend. So far, four other women — Jessica Polderman, Libby Martin, Catherine Polinard and Kasey Hunter — have joined the leadership team for 100 Women of the Coastal Bend and are working tirelessly to bring this fantastic opportunity to fruition. 24 The Bend
Membership will consist of 100 women who pledge to donate $100, 4 times a year, to a chosen charity, for a collective total of $10,000 per quarterly meeting. Each quarter, the members select three charities from applications received, and these charities are given five minutes to present their history, mission and how they intend to spend the money. After the presentations, the members will vote on their chosen cause, and the majority recipient will be awarded the full $10,000. An audience of 100+ women is much larger than some of these lesser-known charities have been in contact with, and both Mims and Collins are excited about the exposure level this will give them. As she reflected on her discoveries by following the Hill Country chapter, Mims said, “That 5-minute presentation has opened the door for these charities to receive many life-changing donations, including checks, electronic devices and remodeling centers.” They look forward to broadening the reach for charities here in the Coastal Bend. Each charity awarded the $10,000 will have the opportunity to speak at the next meeting and discuss the impact of the funds and how it helped their organization. For those interested in getting involved, the registration link will go live this month, and will be announced via the organization’s email and social media. Anyone is eligible to join, but for the first meeting, enrollment will be capped at 100. Although this philanthropic organization requires a relatively low financial and time commitment, the results of these contributions will ultimately benefit the community in a great way. Bubble Teas
DISCOVER THE FIVE BEST PLACES TO SIP ON A DELIGHTFUL BOBA TEA BEVERAGE BY: KYLIE COOPER
LISABE LLA' S BIST RO & B A R
Boba milk tea, or "bubble tea," is a frothy drink consisting of a tea base shaken with flavors or sweeteners and milk, with tapioca pearls or popping boba anchoring the beverage. This imaginative version of tea finds its roots in Taiwan in the 1980s, but several Coastal Bend establishments share their excellent versions of the drink.
Hanaya Poke
6113 Saratoga Blvd, Ste A 4938 S Staples St, Ste E5
This spot serves Hawaiian-style, Asianinspired poke bowls and sushi burritos. But its extensive tea menu should not be overlooked: The Rainbow Lychee is a fan favorite, consisting of lychee-flavored butterfly pea tea with rainbow popping pearls.
Happy Tea
5433 S Staples St. Suite A
Pick literally any tea on the menu here and you’ll be more than satisfied. Happy Tea’s selection includes caffeine-free options, various milk alternatives, roasted oolong and more. Plus, it features a BOGO 50% off special every Tuesday and Wednesday.
Vu Tea
5634 McArdle Rd.
Vu Tea’s star beverage is, of course, its bubble teas. Select the flavor of your cravings — we recommend the Mango Milk Tea or the Vietnamese Milk Coffee — and then add in your choice of “sinkers” (a variety of tapioca and popping pearls) to finish it off.
Rock and Rollin
2033 Airline Rd. Suite G5
Bubble tea and ice cream make quite the pairing, and to get Rock and Rollin’s full experience, we recommend ordering both. Its fresh bubble milk teas come in Classic, Jasmine Green Tea and Taro Milk flavors, and boba, popping boba and various jellies can be added.
Port A Poke 345 N Alister St.
With a fairly new and revamped menu, Port A Poke is an excellent spot for more than just boba, but its selection of teas definitely doesn’t disappoint. Ten tea flavors, ranging from matcha to mango, are complemented perfectly by its delicious boba varieties.

AROUND THE BEND PERSON OF INTEREST
KC: When you first launched the brand, did you ever expect it to grow into the viral beauty company it is today? MM: Absolutely not. We hand-crafted our products thinking this would be a smallscale thing. It was NEVER supposed to be a huge thing. I was still a celebrity makeup artist at the time, and I thought this would just be a side thing to help me do what I truly love, which is giving back, helping my planet and of course helping animals, especially locally. KC: From the clear-to-rainbow highlighter to color-changing mood creams, your products always seem to be innovative and ahead of the trend. Is this something you consciously work toward with your brand? MM: We always strive to create innovative products. We want to create things no one has ever seen; even products that give that nostalgic feeling. It also comes naturally since I’m a makeup artist.
Megan Martinez
IN CONVERSATION WITH THE CHAOS MAKEUP FOUNDER ON OWNING A VIRAL BEAUTY BRAND, CREATIVE PROCESS AND HER HIGH PROFILE CLIENTELE CONVERSATION BY: KYLIE COOPER PHOTO BY: DUSTIN ASHCRAFT
KC: Take me back to the beginning of Chaos Makeup. What originally inspired you to start this journey? MM: When I was a celebrity makeup artist, I was known for colorful and artistic looks. I was also known for using a ton of highlighter, even though colored highlighters did not exist (yet). Since no one carried them at the time, I started making my own for my own looks. At the time I also taught workshops, and my students were wanting me to make them for sale. So I did it — with no intention of having a brand. I called it Chaos Makeup for short since I was known as Chaos Makeup Artist before. I eventually made an online store where people could purchase them, so I could fund local animal assistance and humanitarian goods where needed. In a nutshell, that’s kind of how this whole journey began. 28 The Bend
KC: Other celebrity makeup artists have used Chaos products on everyone from Dua Lipa to Cardi B. What have been some of your favorite celebrity Chaos sightings? Do you ever get used to seeing your products on such notable people? MM: I have a ton of favorites! [Like] Kim Kardashian and her daughter, Kat Von D, who is a friend now. I am somewhat used to it since I have had celebrity clients, but I do always get excited and feel honored when any celebrity uses our products. KC: Describe the feeling when you see a makeup tutorial or look with Chaos products being created by people from all corners of the internet. MM: Seeing all the creative looks people make with our products is mind-blowing. I would have never thought that this would be real life, people creating works of art with products my brand creates. KC: What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs looking to launch their own brand? MM: My advice would be to always believe in yourself and in your dream. Like Selena once said, “the impossible is always possible."
Rapid Fire Q's – If you could do anyone's makeup, who would it be? Gwen Stefani. If you could only use one beauty product for the rest of your life, what would it be? A beauty blender. What's a movie or TV show you'd love Chaos Makeup to be used in? Our products are used in “Euphoria” and that’s my absolute favorite. Any upcoming beauty trend predictions? I go against trends.
KC: With "Euphoria's" makeup looks being a huge talk of the internet and beauty world, how did it feel for Chaos Makeup to be one of the brands used to create looks for the show? MM: We were considered before the show aired, so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect or how the show would be. We were only told that it was a new show that Drake and Future were producing. But, now that the show is out, I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to have our makeup be a part of these iconic looks. KC: I'd love to know a bit about your creative process. From the inception of a new product idea to launching a product, what does that process look like? MM: In a simplified answer, I sit down with my right-hand person and we make a list of all the ideas I have, and we brainstorm step by step on what we need to achieve this. We create a prototype to see if it’s achievable, and then we adjust it from there until the product is perfect. We then do tons of video content for marketing and photos to launch on our website. KC: Any future plans or projects for Chaos Makeup you can share with us? MM: We're currently working on our custom palettes right now. It’s a work in progress, but as of now that’s the next thing we are working on.

A MID– CENTURY LOVE STORY
32 The Bend
Inside the Kane family's dream home is a collection of design icons by CECILE GOTTLICH photography by JASON PAGE
thebendmag.com 33
COMMONLY CALLED “AMERICA’S FAVORITE CHAIR," THE EAMES LOUNGE CHAIR WAS DESIGNED BY CHARLES AND RAY EAMES IN 1956. THE DESIGNERS WANTED TO CREATE A CHAIR WITH "THE WARM RECEPTIVE LOOK OF A WELL-USED FIRST BASEMAN'S MITT." THE MOLDED PLYWOOD SHELL WAS UNPRECEDENTED IN DESIGN AT THE TIME.
is one of Glenda Kane’s great loves, second to her late husband Jerry. When she was just 15 years old and visiting Corpus Christi from San Antonio, Kane was driving with her mother through Hewit Estates. Every time they visited, they would drive the winding street, admiring the unique architecture of each home. On this visit in the early 1960s, Kane spotted the house of her dreams. The striking 7,200-square-foot mid-century modern masterpiece was the newly built home of famed oil titan and self-made millionaire Oscar Wyatt and his wife, Lynn, an international socialite and philanthropist. When Kane laid eyes on this home, she knew it would be hers one day. “I looked at my mom, and I said, ‘I’m going to live in that house.’ My mother balked, ‘You’re getting delusions of 34 The Bend
grandeur. You’re never going to live in that house,’ and I thought, ‘Watch me.’” A few months later, she met Jerry Kane. She went on a date with his friend, but instead hit it off with Jerry. Glenda and Jerry had much to talk about. Jerry mentioned to her that he lived on Hewit Drive, and Glenda promptly told him, “My house, the one I want to live in, is three doors up.” Jerry said, “That’s Oscar Wyatt’s house. I love that house.” And that was the beginning of their love story. The Kanes were together from the time they were 15. Every step of the way, they worked toward their dream of owning the Wyatt house. Finally in 1988, they made their dream come true. The home had been vacant for years after Oscar and Lynn Wyatt moved to Houston. Glenda’s first order of business when they purchased the home was to plant the statuesque oak trees across the sprawling lawn. Little by little, they added their personal touches to the home.

OPPOSITE: THE PLATNER ARMCHAIR, DESIGNED BY WARREN PLATNER FOR KNOLL, IS A DESIGN ICON. SINCE ITS DEBUT IN 1966, IT HAS NEVER BEEN OUT OF PRODUCTION. PLATNER’S DESIGN MARKED A CHANGE IN DESIGN FROM RIGID AND MINIMAL TO “DECORATIVE, GENTLE, AND GRACEFUL.” 36 The Bend
“Glenda Kane has a profound knowledge of design classics and an incredible eye. Her home could be a museum of design icons,” observes writer, Cecile Gottlich. The current den used to be a covered patio, but an accidental barbecue fire in the early ’90s led to converting the patio to a den and expanding the kitchen. “I thought, ‘This is my chance. We can fix up this part of the house,’” Kane recalled. The formerly monotone Formica kitchen hadn’t been updated since the house was built in 1958. Kane was ahead of her time opting for deep green lacquered cabinetry to bring the outdoors in; she and her contractor hand-mixed the paint to get the exact shade of green to match her vision. Throughout the years, Kane made it a point to stay true to the home’s aesthetic and to the mid-century ideal of honest materials, minimal furniture and integration of indoor and
outdoor motifs. She has spent years thoughtfully curating and collecting iconic furniture pieces and art to fit the home’s style. Framing the modern marble fireplace in the den are two original chrome Platner for Knoll armchairs, while a Milo Baughman burlwood and chrome console table sits behind a deep blue sofa. A Herman Miller Eames chair with accompanying ottoman is set against the immaculate walnut paneling that is repeated throughout the home. Each bedroom has its own sense of style. Kane opted for a monochrome palette in the first guest room, with an upholstered headboard wall that makes for a stunning and functional focal point. A second guest room, off the thebendmag.com 37

But the real star is an enormous Art Deco chandelier salvaged from a theater in San Francisco. This is the jewel of the room; one of just a few available for purchase. “I wanted the larger one,” Kane said, “but Johnny Depp bought it instead.” These thoughtfully curated details are not what truly make the home special. The Kanes poured their love into this home, and it is evident. Jerry passed away a couple of years ago, but Glenda has carried on their legacy breathing love and soul into every corner of the home. The Kanes spent 30 years working toward their dream to own this iconic estate, and another 30 filling it with love. But the greatest love story is not the home itself — it is the one that Glenda and Jerry created together therein.

MAKE AN ENTRANCE ENTRYWAY TABLES FOUR WAYS
photos by Lillian Reitz
location London Towne Model Home, D.R. Horton Coastal Bend
entryway table Chic to Chic
A house’s entryway should be both utilitarian and aspirational. It’s where you leave shoes or drop your keys; it’s also the first impression your home will make on entering guests. So, how do you achieve functionality while also leaving an impact? Using the same entryway table, stylists Katy Jones-Gulsby, Monica Benavidez, Terrie Moore and Jo Anne Howell provide their takes on the space and share their top tips on creating your own.
44 The Bend
JOANNE HOWELL'S DESIGN TIPS:
NO.1 An entryway serves as the introduction your guests have to your home. With that in mind, use this space to show off your personality with items that are meaningful to you or tell a story.
NO.2 Add interest to the area with a cohesive color palette and a variety of textures. Incorporating colors and textures that complement one another will tie the space together.
NO.3 Play with varying heights and depths to add interest. Display decor atop your table at different levels with items like books or stands. Place storage options under the table to keep the area clutter-free.

thebendmag.com 45
TERRIE MOORE'S DESIGN TIPS:
NO.1 Go big and resist the temptation to play small. If floor space is tight, hang a statement art piece or an over-scale hanging light fixture.
NO.2 Greet guests with something alive. Keep a large, heavy vase filled with pebbles ready for tree branches or a palm fond you cut from your yard. Add flowers for special occasions and celebrations.
NO.3 Decorate for how you live. If walking your dog is a daily adventure, keep a beautiful box filled with leashes and treats by the door. No shoes in the house? Position a chair for easy shoe removal.

KATY JONESGULSBy'S DeSign tIpS:
NO.1 Large-scale art makes a big impact in an entryway — choose something with bold, vibrant color and a graphic edge. I love old posters in an entry, and these mid-century airport posters bring the perfect shot of color and style.
NO.2 Vintage suitcases make great storage for under an entry table or bench. Stash throw blankets and seasonal items out of sight. Finding a matching pair is always a plus.
NO.3 Scoring vintage umbrellas at vintage and thrift stores is easy, and mixing them in with your modern umbrellas gives visual interest. They often come in lovely colors and patterns.

MONICA BENAVIDEZ'S DESIGN TIPS:
NO.1 Add in décor at various heights using risers, books or even trays flipped upside down with items stacked on them.
NO.2 I always recommend incorporating something live into a curated space, such as florals or a plant, for a luxe, seasonal look.
NO.3 Layer in something unexpected such as leaning art, a bold ottoman or something vintage to give it a “wow” factor. Use what you have and get creative!

HEALTH BE WELL
Now Experiencing: IV Nutritional Therapy Intravenous (IV) Nutritional Therapy has become increasingly popular in the world of health and well-being. From detoxification and improving immunity to boosting energy levels, you’ll find this type of treatment on a variety of beauty and health blogs and publications. To give you a rundown on local spots to receive IV Nutritional Therapy, we sent three of our team members out to experience the treatment for themselves and report back on their findings.
“As someone who never paid much attention to the IV Nutrition trend that slowly dripped onto the scene (pun unapologetically intended), I was surprised at just how much medical science is required to safely and effectively administer these treatments. My experience began with a thorough discussion with RN, Skylar Smith at Coastal Spa MD. After discussing my medical history and several rounds of questions later, the majority of my nerves about the treatment were settled. Coastal Spa MD offers several types of drips that address anything from immunity boosting to stress and peace of mind. Re: my conversation with Skylar, we opted for the hydrate drip, which restores your body’s fluid and electrolyte balance. The hydrate drip takes around an hour to complete, which seems like a long time to sit doing nothing, but they have you covered. They ensure their clients' comfort with dimmed lights, aromatherapy, a TV setup with Netflix and of course, a glass of wine or two. The immediate effects of the drip aren’t anything intense, though I did get a rather nice boost of energy. The beauty of these IV drips is their ability to be customized by your RN to serve your specific health needs."
"With new technology changing the way we think about beauty and health products, one of interest has been IV Therapy. Intravenous infusions combine vitamins, minerals and health boosters within 30 minutes to support optimal nourishment, energy and overall health. I had a chance to visit Revive Corpus Christi for an IV therapy treatment—the Glamour Infusion. Packed with vitamins, minerals, amino acids and more, the infusion was painlessly done by a nurse before I was taken to the IV Lounge which offered comfy recliners, blankets and internet to either relax or send emails while the infusion was underway. I felt great afterward and went into the week with high energy levels and no side effects. Other benefits including hair, skin and brain health require multiple treatments. Revive offers monthly memberships and several other boutique services and treatments including ozone therapy, hormone optimization, regenerative medicine and anti-aging and aesthetics. If you’re interested in the next level delivery of health or need restoration and hydration after a wild night at a classic Corpus Christi event, visit Revive!"
– SUZZETTE JAMES, C O N T R I B U T O R
“What if I told you there’s a simple way to push a hangover over boost your own body's energy and performance or assist in your anti-aging beauty regimen? Sounds too good to be true, but according to statistics, the Infusion Therapy market is predicted to grow to $10.98 billion by 2027. Needless to say, I had to give it a try. 361 Wellness, a Neurowellness Spa, was my first experience with this type of therapy. They offer a variety of different types of treatments that help with all types of conditions. After being greeted by the sweetest nurse, I filled out a short medical history and answered a few questions. The Beautiful, their signature beauty solution, boasts help for skin damage, thinning hair and brittle nails (bingo!) and includes Glutathione. Glutathione uses its antioxidant powers to eliminate toxins and repair damaged cells while boosting strength and endurance. After the insertion of the needle, the not fun part, I got to relax and play on my phone, the fun part, for 40 minutes. Easy, peasy. The nurse mentioned I would sleep very well that night and notice the benefits in 24-48 hours. Looking through their menu of services, I made note of the concierge service for home treatment of jet lag and hangovers.”

Low-Dose CT Lung Scans for Women: An Essential Exam in 2022 With the beginning of a new year, it's time to start thinking about your health and overall well-being. Radiology Associates, the leading medical imaging practice in the Coastal Bend, would like to help you get the crucial exams you need for a healthier 2022. We often hear that cancer does not discriminate; this is particularly true during a pandemic. Don't put aside your well-being by delaying these important health screenings. Keeping your scheduled appointments is key to a healthier you. Women receiving their annual Mammograms and/or Bone Density tests should consider adding a CT lung cancer screening to their yearly assessment. Radiology Associates can assist you with all three screenings. Despite advancements in surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, lung cancer remains the leading cause of death in the U.S. This is largely due to cancer not being discovered until the disease has reached advanced stages. However, like most cancers, the earlier lung cancer is diagnosed, the greater the chances of survival. Low-dose CT lung screens are the most effective advancement in cancer detection today. Low-dose CT scans capture images of the entire vascular system, while multiple images give cancer less chance to hide.
High risk individuals may include women who: • Are 50 through 80 years old • Have a history of heavy smoking (one pack per day for 20 years or two packs per day for 10 years. • Are either a current smoker or have quit within the past 15 years If you have any of these risk factors, talk to your health care professional about getting a low-dose CT lung screen. Laura Commons' go-to BEAUTY ROUTINE
TOP REALTOR SHARES SELF-CARE TIPS FROM HER FAVORITE LOCAL YOGA CLASS TO THE PERFECT, LONG-LASTING HIGHLIGHTER BY: LAURA COMMONS PHOTO BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES
I
’ve learned you have to make yourself a priority. For me, that looks like taking time to cook healthy meals, getting as close as I can to seven to eight hours of sleep and exercising to keep myself strong and agile. My husband of 28 years passed away over two years ago, and it was a hard reality to face that he was no longer here to encourage me to live a healthy lifestyle. It was now up to me to do it on my own — so almost immediately, I tried very hard to do just that. It’s now routine for me to exercise three times a week with my trainer, Amy Daniels, who has also helped me come up with meals consisting of lean proteins, lots of green vegetables and a few healthy carbs that work for my palate. I absolutely love food, so for me it is a balance. I try very hard to stick to healthy meals on a daily basis so that I can splurge on special occasions. You have to enjoy life and all that it has to offer. I’m not about denying myself the things that bring me joy, like a delicious meal with friends. If you’re content, it shows! Other than the three days I train with Daniels, I also try to get in another two to three days of exercise per week, typically consisting of a run or walk in the neighborhood or maybe a yoga class, such as one of my local favorites: Water Dog Yoga, SUP & Barre. The classes are fun, and if you pick the right class, you’ll also get to take in some great views of our bay. More importantly, being comfortable with who you are and living your life in gratitude for all that has been given to you is the basis of beauty in my opinion. But, when it comes to tangible products, there are a few I can’t go without.
Check out Commons’ favorite local yoga studio, Water Dog Yoga, SUP & Barre to take one of its amazing classes.

This is a luxury I will never give up! This is the absolute best if you like a light base but still need coverage. This stuff smells and feels great on. I have turned so many friends onto this product.
Years ago I asked a woman at a restaurant why her makeup looked so luminous. She said it was her Anastasia highlighter kit. So I went straight to Ulta and purchased it and I have worn it every day since. Works great on your face, eyes and décolletage.

Ivory Soap I have very sensitive skin, leaning toward dry, and when I was very young my dermatologist suggested I use Ivory because it has little fragrance and wouldn’t dry out my skin. I have never been able to use anything else on my face since. Available at H-E-B

Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream My mom instilled in me the importance of keeping my skin moisturized from day one, and I am so thankful for that. This product was also recommended to me by my dermatologist, and it is a staple in my home; I could not live without it. I apply a generous amount after showers. I keep it at my desk and in my purse. This is a perfect example of an inexpensive product that truly works just as well as, if not better than, some of the most expensive moisturizers you can buy. Available at any major grocery or drug store Coconut Oil I love the shine that it gives my legs! I don’t use it anywhere else. I’ve been asked a few times what product I have on my legs and this is it. Available at H-E-B

Available at Ulta Beauty NARS Orgasm Blush This product seems to make everyone’s "Best Blush" list. And rightfully so — it adds a very natural color to your face with a little shimmer too. All of the products I use on my face tend to add a dewy effect; I don’t use any matte products. The idea is for my face to look like it’s well hydrated and glowing. Available at Sephora Hill Med Spa I make regular visits to see Alice Hill, a local aesthetician. I absolutely love her, and she understands how important it is to me to look natural and healthy. She also never tries to oversell me, and I trust her fully. I typically will go in and just ask her what products and/or treatments she thinks would be most beneficial.

qua sea glass coated in salt from the ocean, broken shells with their textured, creamcolored façade, muted green dune grasses blowing in the wind, driftwood washed up along the shore — all these items are perfectly imperfect and fill this family beach home in Port Aransas’ coveted Beachwalk neighborhood. When the homeowner first found the property, she couldn’t help but appreciate these details. “The former owner took the outside and brought it in,” she said. Whitewashed shiplap covers the walls of the main living areas, while seafoam green paneling is repeated on the ceilings. floor lamp even has the smooth, curved appearance of a conch shell. Wingback chairs with coordinating fabric frame the fireplace, and a sisal rug grounds the space while adding another layer of texture. The whitewashed paneling in the living area seamlessly melds into the glass mosaic backsplash in the kitchen. This backsplash, reminiscent of sea glass, continues behind the custom paneled vent hood, one of many special millwork features. Details like the ogee profile on the feet of each kitchen cabinet and the petite columns at each corner of the island make the cabinetry feel more like showcase furniture rather than simple kitchen cupboards. The enormous kitchen island includes even more of this unique detailing. Its countertop looks

Counter stools of distressed driftwood with rush seats add more texture to the kitchen. Out the glass doors from the kitchen and living room is a massive wrap-around porch with stunning beach, dune and water views. Mint Condition
A VERSATILE HERB WITH A STORIED BACKGROUND BY: JUSTIN BUTTS
T
he flavorful and aromatic perennial groundcover mint grows extremely well in the Coastal Bend. It can actually jump out of your flower bed if you let it. The herb grows by sending out runners that dip to the ground and set roots. In this manner, mint can spread as far as healthy soil and plentiful watering will take it. To contain mint, build a border for the bed 12” high, or occasionally spade the borders. Mint is one of the most storied and legendary of all herbs. It has been documented as a food and medicine in societies from Ancient Egypt through modern times. It’s even used today on an industrial scale. The herb is excellent for adding flavor to drinks and food, of course. But, it’s also used to make sauces, vinegars, oils and syrups. Mint baths are highly rejuvenating for the body and mind, and the essential oil of mint is a powerful remedy for colds. Applications for this versatile herb are endless, including sprinkling dried mint in cabinets to deter mice, rubbing it on a new beehive to attract bees and planting it close to tender vegetables to repel pests. The list of uses goes on. Spearmint (Menthe spicata): Spearmint offers the largest leaves and most luxurious growth of all the mints making it best overall. Peppermint (M. piperita): Peppermint grows nearly as well as spearmint but with smaller leaves. The aroma is not quite as powerful as spearmint, though distinct and strong. Apple Mint (M. suaveolens): Apple mint is perhaps the most interesting mint flavor and aroma. Apple mint is not as hardy or fast-growing and has smaller leaves. Red Raripila Spearmint (M. raripila rubra): Large, pointed, dark green leaves with purple stems. Grow slightly upright for a lush mint bed up to 24” tall.

Spacing, 12” to 24”. Height, 12” to 24”. Hardy perennial groundcover. Plant from transplant in full sun in rich, welldrained soil. Add several inches compost, plus two cups pastured poultry manure and two cups native wood ash around each plant. Mulch bed with native leaf mulch. Water regularly. Mint performs well even in the heat, but only with plenty of water. Spreads rapidly. Contain mint with edging or a spade.
Mint quickly grows into a lush and expanding groundcover. To stimulate growth, harvest a few leaves regularly and remove all flowers (they are edible). Once the mint bed becomes lush, it will suppress weeds and continue to grow taller and thicker. Harvest often by clipping the ends of a few stems; regrows quickly. When the bed is mature, let the gorgeous purple flowers bloom; bees and birds love them. The entire garden will smell of glorious mint.
"Mint is a magical little thing, especially when it comes to cocktails. When you want it to be a giant green flavor, it will. Sometimes though, it lights up flavors you wouldn't expect in the most subtle way. Mint is magic. My go-to cocktail with the refreshing herb is a South Side, which combines gin, lime juice, simple syrup and mint."
We used mint to wean our daughters off soft drinks. When the girls wanted a sweet drink, instead of opening a soda, we had them go outside to pick their own mint from the garden. With plenty of varieties growing, they could take their time smelling and tasting each one. Meanwhile, we boiled water with green tea leaves. The girls steeped their chosen mint in a glass of green tea with honey and forgot all about Cokes! They still love their mint tea.

ALL MIXED UP Vintage plates are plentiful! Sets are easy to source at vintage and thrift stores, in a plethora of patterns and colors. Don’t worry about finding an entire place setting — this is where mixing comes in. Find a set of dinner plates, and mix in another set of salad plates or soup bowls. If mixing patterns seems daunting, start by finding two that have something in common. Disparate patterns in the same color tones are a great match, or maybe use similar patterns in wildly different colors. Don’t forget the textiles! Tablecloths, placemats and napkins are having a bit of a moment right now, and they make a great way to play with pattern and color. No need to be formal. While table setting might make some people think of fancy dinner parties, today’s table styling is all about having fun. Don’t worry about where your bread plate sits or which cutlery goes where — create place settings that work for you!

I
’m a firm believer in mixing patterns whenever possible, and this extends especially to table settings. No matter what your interior design taste might be, a tablescape is the quickest and easiest way to inject playfulness and pattern into your home, and to experiment with colors and prints that might otherwise be daunting. Stripes, paisleys, bold colors and graphic patterns — anything goes when you are setting a table, and in today’s style climate, more is definitely more. As always, I find that vintage dishes are the cheapest way to play with this trend, especially if bold colors and patterns are something new for you. Paired with patterned table textiles, colorful or unique cutlery and jewel-tone glassware, you have an easy, eye-catching table perfect for spring and summer entertaining.

The Flap of a Butterfly Wing BY: JO ANNE HOWELL PHOTOS BY: BELOVED PHOTOGRAPHY Invite Only When it comes to invitations, I always say less is more. Keeping the design simple and to the point, while adding in subtle nods to the wedding’s theme, is the way to go. This is the first impression your guests will have of the event, so using high-quality paper and coordinating branding elements, such as monograms or logos, will make all the difference.
parting words For the wedding of Annie and Dillion, the bride’s love of butterflies became the theme’s cornerstone. Taking inspiration from an installation featuring hundreds of butterflies hanging from the ceiling at Neiman Marcus, this motif was used as a way to add special and unique touches throughout the celebration.
Make a Statement Don’t be afraid to make a big impression with your wedding cake. In an event world filled with traditional and trendy elements, not being afraid to go big and make a statement with something different is always a breath of fresh air. Delicate fondant butterflies flutter their way around the entire cake and create a wow moment.

Kelby McCan Why did I become a Realtor? I have always desired to help those in dire need. This manifested when I was 20 years of age and I tried out for Air Force Special Warfare Pararescue. After a grueling selection and 2 years of training, I began a 10 year adventure across 4 continents rescuing military personnel from war zones and civilians devastated by natural disasters. While overseas I would come home and see my family 2 weeks out of the year. On one of these trips I met my soon to be wife Rachelle at the oldest dance hall in Texas, Gruene Hall. She was from Falls City and grew up believing time with extended family would be important for our children, so I began submitting paperwork to move back. Rachelle had been managing Brons beach carts in Port Aransas for 8 years and I would visit her as often as possible. She dreamed of owning a home there and when we found out she was pregnant we applied for a VA home loan. This was a difficult process as the Island is expensive and a military salary isn’t much. We were approved for a home that had two little apartments below that helped bring in income and were necessary to our approval. We signed the paperwork for the home while in the hospital 2 days after our first daughters birth. After settling in and finding some projects in our fixer upper, we got to work restoring our new home and enjoying being newly weds. It was stressful with contractors and a newborn, but we were making things work. Then Hurricane Harvey hit our home 2 months later. Our apartments were demolished and the work we had completed down stairs destroyed. We felt defeated, but with the support of family, we got to working cleaning up our home. As we began to put plans together to rebuild, the city contacted us and issued a cease work order. Apparently
the home we were sold had illegal dwellings built downstairs that were not permitted and could not be rebuilt. We were scared. The home had to be rebuilt, we were not allowed to have renters, and the mortgage demanded to be paid. So I set out to contract in Africa 45 days on 45 days off providing medical aid to indigenous people and forces. Our hopes of an island life together quickly changed into a military lifestyle yet again. Over the next two years we took the contracting money and rebuilt the bottom of the home into garages and patios and opened a small golf cart rental company to help bring me home once it was profitable.
While in Africa I studied real estate, took the exam, and became an agent because I never wanted this to happen to me or anyone else I knew ever again. I would become an agent, provide honest representation, and share my story. It didn’t take long for this message to be received warmly. In my first year I went on to list $15M in properties and represented and additional $12M in purchases. Was this success generated because I work tirelessly for my clients? Or because I provide access to hard to find properties?Sure, that’s all true. But what I hear most often is that clients feel safe, their interests protected, and that I never quit working for them. I know what it’s like to lose almost everything while keeping a family together. I will never let that happen to you.

Realtor in Corpus Christi
(832) 540-1006 mylin.realtor@gmail.com I am originally from the Philippines, and we moved to the US when I was a teenager. I have been a Corpus Christi resident since 1999. I moved here to do my internship for Physical Therapist Asst. Program and came back after graduation. I have worked in various hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living and my last job was at Therapy First, an outpatient clinic. I met a broker who was my patient that introduced me to real estate. I got into real estate full time in March of 2020, when Covid started. I educated myself through attending Real Estate conferences, listening to RE podcasts, reading business books and talking to other seasoned Realtors because I wanted to be a professional Real Estate Agent. I engrossed myself in the real estate world because I wanted to excel, and I needed to as well, especially as a mom. I wanted to be a good role model for my kids and I want to provide a good life for them. I would attribute my success in real estate by my honesty, integrity and compassion for my clients, as well as my strong mindset that I would succeed in this field. I would work hard and give it my all to be able to provide a good service as well as establish a good, long relationship with each one. Real estate is not for everyone, but for me, it is the best thing that has ever happened. It is my passion and joy to help friends, families, clients, and investors achieve their real estate goals! My passion also encouraged me to help others. I am a Board Member on a few organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Leadership Corpus Christi, a member of Paws and Claws and my vision to start a charity to help underprivileged buyers achieve their home dreams, and Coastal Bend Keys Foundation.

MAGICAL SOUNDS OF THE CORPUS CHRISTI CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY BY: MARK GREGORY LOPEZ
S
ometimes, to hear music is to see. When someone hears a melody or refrain permeating the air, a sensory memory can occur. Or someone could easily get lost in the sounds of a violin note, possibly woodwinds gaining momentum with the shift of a beat. In that sense, music is personal. However, it’s universal in that it’s a craft like many others. It’s this craft that the Corpus Christi Chamber Music Society sought to bring to the Coastal Bend 40 years ago when the society was first founded. The society aims to promote the appreciation and enjoyment of chamber music by bringing world-renowned artists to perform for a broad range of listeners in the South Texas area at concerts, educational opportunities and community outreach programs. “Isn’t it beautiful that a few people can have such a vision and do the work to bring it together, and that it lives beyond their participation in it?” said Susan Sturman, the society’s current program director. “That’s such a beautiful thing. I think the founders of the chamber music society were quite visionary, and it’s a successful movement.” The series boasts incredible artists, with groups like the Ying Quartet, Billy Childs, Roomful of Teeth and Gryphon Trio making appearances in the 2021-2022 season. However, don’t think because chamber music has stayed mostly within the classical tradition that the society isn’t open to experimentation and innovation. “We are trying to keep our high standards and stick with the mission that our founders started, and at the same time be a little more inclusive,” Sturman said. “What I mean by that is, there’s a preponderance of string quartets and piano trios that have come to Corpus as part of 98 The Bend
the society, and that is very much the heart of what chamber music is, but our world is changing, and chamber music is changing. “There are fabulous wind groups, brass groups, voice groups that play phenomenal chamber music, and wonderful new composers writing chamber music, so we try to make sure to include that in our season by having a greater variety of instruments and voices represented — and also definitely try to bring more contemporary music while still satisfying the appetite of someone who wants Beethoven and Mozart, but keeping us current as well.” Case in point: the society’s April 23 concert, which will have the aforementioned Ying Quartet, along with jazz pianist Billy Childs, in what the program describes as a “genre-bending concert.” When asked about the hesitancy of someone who might consider chamber music boring or passé, Sturman responds: “Some people come thinking they’re going to hate it, and they absolutely love it! They’re drawn in because the artists are so fine and dedicated to their art.”

"F
lowers bring joy to people, and I’m happy to be a part of spreading that,” said Leslie Bentley of Bentley’s Flower Truck. Starting in 2021, residents of the Coastal Bend may have seen glimpses of a 1958 Volkswagen bus driving around town, selling flowers with a side of smiles. Bentley, along with her husband Matt, took the initiative in combining their passions for Volkswagens and flowers and worked toward her dream of starting a flower business. “It’s all about the fun experience of each customer being able to approach the truck and hand-pick their own bouquet,” said Bentley. This dream started several years back when she was tagged in an Instagram post for a similar business in Nashville, Tennessee. With prior experience in the floral department of her local H-E-B, Bentley transferred her inherent floral knowledge to this new endeavor and set

out on the journey to opening Bentley’s Flower Truck. Her humble demeanor shows as she claims she is no florist, but with the opportunity to combine her penchant for flowers and well-built German cars, Bentley knew she had to be the first flower truck in the Coastal Bend. Bentley and her husband share the experience of making the business and the truck itself come to life. After selling their beloved 1968 Volkswagen Bug, they found what’s now their truck through word of mouth in Arizona, and shortly after, it made the trek to the Coastal Bend. Upon arrival, Fenton Speed Shop helped with a fresh coat of paint. However, the truck needed more than just a paint job; the Bentleys got together and rebuilt the motor, and resolved any maintenance issues to restore the truck to its former glory. After six months of work, Bentley’s Flower Truck made its first appearance in October 2021.

Bentley shows immense gratitude for the support of the local community. She constantly attends local markets and popups on the weekends with the intent to bring joy to those who shop at her truck. “It makes me feel good to hear people are enjoying this new business and type of experience,” she said, “and I personally want to thank each and every one of my customers so far.” She plans to keep expanding the business, and hopes to have a monthly subscription service and daily deliveries. Striving to provide her service to private events is also on her professional itinerary, as Bentley’s Flower Truck is just getting its tires warmed up. So, if you are out and about, keep your head on a swivel. You may spot this floral chariot coasting around the Coastal Bend.

Tasty Time Savers
WEEKNIGHT MEALS IN 30 MINUTES OR LESS BY: KAYLA BUTTS, MS, RDN, LDN PHOTOS BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES
T
he number one reason people give for not cooking at home is that they don’t have enough time. On average, both men and women are spending about an hour in the kitchen, almost half of the 112 minutes women cooked in the ’60s. Most cite long work hours and juggling child or senior care as reasons for opting to eat out. In fact, some food experts, like cookbook author and chef David Tamarkin, say that “Home cooking is dying.” He cites a 2014 study published in Nutrition Journal that showed a 16-30% decrease in home cooking from 1965 to 2007. An article published in The Washington Post reinforces this data, stating that less than 60% of meals consumed at home were actually prepared at home. Busy Americans have traded hours in the kitchen for preprepped meal boxes or semi-prepared foods. And who can blame us? With all the demands and expectations put on the average adult, this form of self-care can seem like a tedious chore. And while cooking at home saves money and promotes health, it may not be everyone’s proverbial cup of tea. Even the most hesitant home cook can take solace in this: There is a secret to simplify cooking at home. That secret is good ingredients. Fresh, high-quality ingredients don’t need frills and complicated recipes. Often, adequate seasoning with salt and pepper will do the trick. This month’s recipes are simple and cook up within a half an hour. Customize these meals to suit your taste — replace the snapper with salmon, use tofu or chicken instead of cauliflower. Indeed, the most fun aspect of cooking at home is making every meal to your own taste. Cooking doesn’t have to be difficult or timeconsuming. Finding joy in the kitchen can be as simple as finding a superb, locally grown tomato or pastured, thick-cut pork chop.

RECIPE
Sweet and Sour Cauliflower Serves 4 PREP TIME: 5 minutes COOK TIME: 25 minutes INGREDIENTS:
3/4 cup avocado oil 1 head cauliflower, cut into bite-sized pieces 1/4 cup cornstarch 1 tsp fine salt 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1 white onion, cut into 1” pieces 1 red bell pepper, cut into 1” pieces 1 green bell pepper, cut into 1” pieces 1 cup pineapple chunks, canned with juices reserved 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup tomato paste 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar 2 tbsp soy sauce 2 cloves garlic, chopped
DIRECTIONS:
Heat avocado oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Whisk together cornstarch, salt and garlic powder in a shallow bowl. Toss and coat cauliflower in cornstarch mixture. Test oil by adding a little cornstarch into the frying. It’s ready for the cauliflower once the cornstarch immediately starts to vigorously bubble when introduced to the hot oil. Fry cauliflower on each side for 3 minutes, until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and transfer to a paper-towel lined plate. Discard all but approximately 1 tbsp frying oil remaining in the pan. Add in onion and bell peppers, sautéing for 2 minutes, stirring frequently. Meanwhile, prepare sauce in a separate bowl by whisking together pineapple juice, brown sugar, tomato paste, vinegar, soy sauce and garlic. Add sauce, pineapple chunks and prepared cauliflower back into the pan. Cook an additional 2-3 minutes, until sauce starts to thicken. Serve hot with steamed rice. 112 The Bend
RECIPE
Snapper en Papillote Serves 4 PREP TIME: less than 5 minutes COOK TIME: 12-15 minutes INGREDIENTS:
2 snapper fillets 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed 4 cloves garlic, chopped 1 bulb fennel, sliced 1 bunch dill, divided 1 lemon, sliced 4 tbsp olive oil 4 tbsp butter, cubed 1/4 cup dry white wine Himalayan sea salt Cracked pepper
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 375. Lay out a sheet of parchment paper a little over two times the size of your fillet on a baking sheet. Place the fish in the center of the parchment, flesh side up, and season generously with salt and pepper. Lay asparagus, sliced fennel, 1/2 bunch of dill, garlic and lemon slices on top of the fish. Drizzle on 2 tbsp olive oil and 2 tbsp white wine, and top with 2 tbsp butter. Repeat steps for the second fillet. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until the fish is no longer opaque in the thickest region and registering 140 with a meat thermometer.

Cold Brew — Shaken, Please
CASSIDY’S TAKE ON A RESURGENT CLASSIC BY: JULIETA HERNANDEZ PHOTO BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES
T
here’s nothing quite like hot coffee in the morning, but there’s a chilly wind of cold brew creeping into our nights. The Irish Cold Brew Martini, with just the right mix of exhilarating and inebriating, is a part of Cassidy’s Irish Pub’s cocktail menu. This take on the espresso martini comes with a Cassidy's twist. Kyla Neely, manager of the romantic downtown corner pub, came up with the cold brew martini for a seasonal cocktail menu. “We make a lot of Irish coffees, but we don’t do actual espresso,” Neely explained on a candlelit evening at Cassidy’s. “So we did cold brew, and went with the Jameson Cold Brew instead of vodka, which is typically used.” Neely begins with the fitting liquor: Jameson Cold Brew Coffee Whiskey. The next ingredient is Caffe Del Fuego, a Texas craft coffee liquor with the warmth of Madagascar vanilla notes, followed with some creme de cacao, a classic and silky chocolate liqueur. After adding a touch of cream, Neely throws ice in the shaker and gives it a hard shake; just enough to get everything aerated and frothy together. She pours the cocktail into a chilled coupe glass through a fine cocktail strainer for a smooth, velvety texture, then delicately pops a trio of coffee beans on that fresh and foamy head. “We’re not really [a cocktail-centric place] here, so what we do have, we try to make it a little more … us, rather than just what everyone else is doing,” Neely said. “We knew a lot of people did espresso martinis, so we didn’t want to do one just because; it needed to be something that fit with us.” Through the fine froth and foam, the martini has the mouthfeel of coffee in a snowstorm. Jameson, which is usually a forward spirit, lays a modest but stable foundation to the rest of the flavors in this drink: smooth hints of chocolate, cold cream and a brisk chill of caffeine.

Kolaches on the Corner THIS LOCAL SCRATCH KITCHEN OFFERS DELICIOUS, FRESH-BAKED KOLACHES AND MORE BY: JESSIE CHROBOCINSKI PHOTOS BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES

f you drive past the intersection of Staples and Comanche, you might catch a whiff of the mouthwatering smells flowing out from Comanche Corner Cafe, where delicious, freshly baked kolaches are served almost every day. Comanche Corner Cafe was only open for five months before the pandemic hit in 2020. Owner Ricci Neer describes the cafe's humble beginnings and how COVID-19 changed the fledgling business: "It's been a work in progress,” she said. “We actually used to scoop our dough with ice cream scoops, and that's how we measured them out. People started ordering dozens at a time, though, and they’d have to wait for long periods of time because it took us forever to make them. The pandemic impacted us economically, but with the help of a small loan we got a dough splitter. Now, we are able to weigh big portions of dough and split it into pieces that are easier for us to roll into kolaches." These improvements meant getting kolaches into hands much quicker — like the most popular brisket kolache, stuffed with shredded smoked beef and Boar’s Head cheese, or a pulled pork kolache with smoked Gouda. The menu also features breakfast kolaches of bacon, egg and cheese or chorizo, egg and cheese, with the latter’s spicy sausage sourced from Boarri Craft Butchery, which is located just up the road.
Chef Ricci’s friendly face welcomes each customer to the walk-up window when ordering at Comanche Corner Cafe.

Comanche Corner Cafe makes everything from scratch as much as possible, from smoking the meat to homemade sides and barbecue sauce to self-brined jalapenos and pickles. Inside this little corner cafe, in addition to tasty flavors, you’ll also find caring community service. For those in need, the cafe’s D Cup Program offers a complimentary cup of soup to women who are overcoming a crisis, pregnant, new mothers or undergoing chemotherapy or surgery of any sort. "People in this community have been good to us in helping our doors to stay open. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support of our customers and our community," Neer said gratefully. "I've always wanted to figure out a way to get a hot cup of comfort to a woman in crisis. That's such a private matter and it's difficult to leave those types of situations. I want people to be able to come and get a complimentary cup if they need it every day we're open." Comanche Corner Cafe’s signature barn red color, intoxicating smells and delicious offerings — and Neer’s unbeatable hospitality — make this local joint one of the best pit stops you’ll make all day.

HISTORY LOOKING BACK
King-Kleberg house, 517 N. Broadway, 1940.
Broadway Style NORTH BROADWAY’S GRAND VIEWS WERE ARCHITECTURAL ELEGANCE BY: JILLIAN BECQUET PHOTO COURTESY OF: CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LIBRARIES, LA RETAMA SPECIAL COLLECTIONS & ARCHIVES The Corpus Christi Cathedral, Wilson Building, 600 Leopard and Wells Fargo (formerly Driscoll Hotel) are so central to the views many of us think of when we think of downtown Corpus Christi’s skyline. Picture that stretch, but with large, ornate homes instead. Most were two stories, all were unique. It was the top choice of location even for the city’s founder, Henry Kinney. Reading down the names of those who lived in homes on North Broadway is like opening a book of Corpus Christi history: Mann, Rabb, Kenedy, King, Spohn… These homes each had distinctive architecture, but the King-Kleberg home stood out with its turret and gingerbread trim. The home was built in 1893 by Henrietta King, matriarch of King Ranch, after her husband died. She lived out her life 122 The Bend
here, running the ranch for four decades until her death at 92 in 1925. She shared this home with her daughter Alice and her family. Her son-in-law Robert J. Kleberg, Sr. worked to grow King Ranch alongside Mrs. King. While the King and Kleberg families were wholly dedicated to the land they owned and the business they built, this home afforded the Kleberg children the opportunity to attend schools in town. It stood only until 1945, when the land became part of the Diocese of Corpus Christi site of the Corpus Christi Cathedral, an unfortunate casualty of the King and Kleberg families’ enormous generosity with their land and their money.
