Q: What's your favorite holiday tradition in the Coastal Bend?

CK: I’d say driving around to look at lights with the family when my kids were little. From the house with the giant tree on Carmel Parkway to driving through Candy Cane Lane with the windows down to cruising down Ocean Drive. Even with the kids all grown, my wife and I still continue this tradition.

AR: My favorite holiday tradition of late has been ice skating at The American Bank Center with my extended family in town for Christmas. Cold weather is the best weather, and since the temps stay pretty mild here, I love an activity that brings all winter feels without leaving the Coastal Bend.

JC: I would have to be watching the Illuminated Boat Parade with my family! I love all the unique ways local sailors decorate their boats with different themes and lots of lights.

This month’s cover depicts a coastal holiday scene. Though our geographic location lacks snowblanketed pine trees, the Coastal Bend comes alive in the month of December with festive displays.

From Our Family to Yours

Every holiday season, I wait with some anticipation for the holiday cards to start rolling in. One of my absolute favorite things about this time of year is turning the fridge into a collage with the cards we receive in the mail. It’s a reminder of the people who, even if you aren’t in frequent contact with them, have played some role of significance in your life.

Holiday cards also act as a tangible reminder of the passage of time. A yuletide time machine of sorts, the arrangement of family photos and handwritten notes comes together to remind you of growing families, the year’s trials and triumphs and exciting changes on the horizon.

I couldn’t help but think of this issue as a holiday card to our readers. While its cover is devoid of matching sweaters or group photos featuring new and shaky Photoshop skills, it simply and elegantly depicts a coastal Christmas — and that’s our favorite kind.

So with this month’s cover feature, we decided to share that ideal by packaging

together 10 pages of seasonal fun for everyone. Our hope with this feature is to remind you that what the Coastal Bend lacks in snowblanketed pine trees and ice-related activities (though we do have a few of the latter listed on pg. 40), it makes up for in joyous spirit and community. From grandiose light displays to local theatres bringing seasonal classics to the stage, it truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

Also, inside this issue, you’ll read about The FREE Store, a volunteer-based mutual aid effort providing life necessities to underserved community members (pg. 26); meet a retired Navy veteran who’s since dedicated his life to spreading holiday cheer (pg. 28); gain inspiration from a marvel of a home filled with timeless treasures (pg. 54); learn how one local artist is bringing new life to a neighborhood that gave him so much (pg. 68); discover a new coffee shop that aims to be a celebration of unity and a safe space for the queer community while also serving up a great cup of joe (pg. 84); and so much more.

Writing the December issue’s Letter from the Editor, similar to writing a message for a holiday card, always forces reflection on the preceding year. In 2022, we launched an ancillary publication, The Bend Business, to shine a light on the Coastal Bend’s exciting and ever-evolving business landscape. We had a record-breaking number of nominations and votes in The Local’s List reader’s choice poll. We grew our staff to include several new employees who continuously outdo themselves with each issue. We shared hundreds of local stories, all geared toward uplifting this community. That’s quite a year.

With that, and on behalf of the entire Bend family, I wish you and yours the happiest of holidays. We’ll see you in 2023 — with a few exciting surprises up our sleeves.

Omni Hotels across the U.S. seek to en hance the local flavor of each location. The Omni Corpus Christi has partnered with Aunt Aggie De’s for the past year with other ventures and decided to work together to enhance the exquisite dessert menu at their award-winning restaurant.

“Pecans, chocolate and caramel are all ingredients that make us think about the holidays and sharing a meal with family and friends,” she said. “That’s truly what this was - getting together with our friends at Aunt Aggie De’s and creating a fun dessert to share.”

Pastry Chef Tina McPherson is respon sible for the warm bread that guests en joy before their meal at Republic of Tex as, as well as the sweet tastes afterward. She was excited to collaborate with a local favorite to create this dessert. With the continued support of her Executive Chef, Danny Rosa and General Manag er, Etta Butts, Tina has no limits.

“This is the first of what I hope is many more to come,” Morris said. “We are excited to feature this in November and December, and if the community and our guests like it, we may just have to make it a regular on our dessert menu.”

Staying true to yourself and prioritizing what’s important to you — while reminding yourself that you don’t have to do everything on your own — is one major tip. From there, delegating responsibilities to others and setting boundaries with family and friends pertaining to your time and energy are key points.

This time of year can also bring stress, anxiety or depression stemming from loved ones who have passed or aren’t able to join with one another. Rodriguez and Wiley say that honoring and celebrating those who aren’t able to be with us during the holiday season and being okay with starting new traditions are other key points in managing our minds during this time.

As we move through the holiday season, we are constantly reminded that this is supposed to be the happiest time of year. Family, friends, food and gifts are all part of the festivities — but for some people, the bustle and demands of the holidays can be highly overwhelming. As our schedules become busier and our spending becomes heavier, it is too easy to spiral into a holiday depression while trying to be everything for everyone. Kate Rodriguez (Ph.D., LPC-S) and Melica Wiley (M.S., LMFT), co-founders of Youvolve Healing Center, have developed a few strategies to combat the holiday stress.

Rodriguez and Wiley do not shy away from battling a difficult task. Founded in 2020 amid the pandemic, Youvolve Healing Center is a group-practice counseling center that specializes in a variety of therapy practices. In addition to seeing individual clients, it also offers wellness workshops on the last Wednesday of every month that are available to the public. “The goal of Youvolve is to help 'you evolve' before negative things start happening,” Rodriguez said.

As Youvolve believes in preventative measures, it held its “Overcome the Holiday Blues” workshop in October to help people prepare for the season. Along with the stress of Thanksgiving and Christmas comes the impending “new year, new me” perspective. The practice’s go-to tips

The FREE Store, an Aid for the Unhoused

growing steadily, Garza has established a network with like-minded individuals and donors who help provide aid to The FREE Store's inventory. Unfortunately, the demand keeps increasing. The FREE Store's mutual aid is quick and far-reaching. With its strong digital presence, the organization is becoming more accessible, which allows inventory to deplete quickly.

Garza said the catalyst for this organization was clear: "I live in Uptown Corpus Christi; the houseless crisis has reached an all-time high in my area of town. I decided someone had to do something and that I was someone. I could do something. I honestly didn't anticipate it to grow this big,"

Building a network by working with members of the community, local organizations and those in need, Marilena "Mari" Garza is a fervent disciple of charity. Operator and founder of The FREE Store, Garza has been serving the community by providing resources to the unhoused.

Native to Beeville, Texas, Garza holds the Coastal Bend in high regard, and began volunteering with her partner in 2020. Garza immediately noticed how many people were without shoes, so she went home and found 10 pairs she no longer needed. Thus, The FREE Store began taking form.

"The FREE Store Corpus Christi started with only shoes. It has evolved to provide clothing, ready-to-eat food, shelf-stable items, onsite first aid care, a rinse station, hygiene distribution and resources that make surviving on the street or in extreme poverty more bearable," said Garza.

With expansion goals to meet the community's needs, The FREE Store plans to provide a mobile closet, shower and food units. Currently, the organization consists of a core group of 10 volunteers with an additional fluctuating roster of 5-20 volunteers. While

What sets The FREE Store apart begins with its slogan: "Kindness makes the difference." The organization hosts picnics where it sets up shop, ensuring people can have choices while selecting from The FREE Store inventory.

"As shoppers come through, we assist with shopping to ensure they receive everything they need to succeed in their current situation. We have conversations with them, ask how they are, learn their names and eventually learn their stories," said Garza.

Garza exemplifies the good in the Coastal Bend and is someone who truly loves where they live. The FREE Store has given this charitable crusader, along with many shoppers and volunteers, "hope." With that hope, Garza wants to find longlasting solutions to the growing problem of poverty in the Coastal Bend.

KC: Let's start with your Santa origin story. How did you get into this line of work and officially become Santa Ray?

SR: A few years ago, I was visiting a good family friend; while sitting in his living room, we were discussing his Santa business. After a few minutes he said, “I think you would make a great Santa. Would you like to try on some of my suits?” Not being one to disappoint, I tried on his traditional red suit and hat, big Santa belt and furry leather boots — and I was hooked. Before leaving his house that weekend, I bought my first Santa suit online … and since that weekend, I have never looked back.

KC: What does attending Santa School with the Worldwide Santa Claus Network entail?

SR: Over the past few years, everything has been virtual. Increasing my computer skills to develop in person and a virtual business has been very important. Mentorship is vital; having a group of common professionals asking questions and understanding best practices and lessons learned helps to develop all aspects of a Santa business. You also learn about the history of Santa and the role he has played throughout time. [It entails] learning to appreciate all things needed to help safeguard you and be the “Very Best Santa” you could be.

KC: You're also a retired Navy veteran with over 30 years of experience. Are there any skillsets you learned while serving that aid in being a professional Santa?

SR: As a retired Master Chief Hospital Corpsman, I learned and developed strong ethics, robust communication skills and business expertise. Traveling around the world allowed me the opportunity to meet people of different cultures and develop both private and professional relationships. Understanding people helps when engaging them … once I see a smile, I know I have accomplished my mission.

KC: How do you typically respond when a child asks if you're the "real" Santa?

SR: This question is probably the number one question asked. I always ask the child what they mean by “real.” I have them tug on my beard and ask them if my beard is real? I have them touch my finger … I ask if that is real. As a last resort and only if needed, I have a North Pole International Sleigh Driver’s License with my picture. Once I show my license, that usually seals the deal.

KC: From commercials to storytelling events, your services can be booked for just about anything. Is there a certain type of event you love doing the most?

SR: Elementary schools! I have a jolly good time, and the joy of seeing the smiles on all the children’s faces is so moving. Santa gets his energy from seeing the joy on everyone’s faces.

KC: What is the most rewarding, and most challenging, part of being a professional Santa?

SR: Most rewarding: Promoting joy and happiness! Most challenging: Being Santa for everyone. I’m always saddened when I have someone reach out to see if I am available for an appearance and I have to say no because I have another event scheduled at the same time.

KC: What’s the craziest/most memorable thing a kid has ever asked you?

SR: My previous boss (who is not a kid) once asked for a new M series BMW. I have been asked by children if I would be visiting them this year because last year, I did not show up and they didn’t get any presents. For those children, I carry a special shiny gold coin that says “Believe” on one side and “I made Santa’s nice list” on the other.

KC: How do you spend your time during the off-season?

SR: Santa has many chores to do during the off-season. Mrs. Claus always seems to have a list of things she needs fixed around the house. In the springtime, we always plant a garden and grow fresh vegetables. Believe it or not, Santa loves his veggies!

Kick off your tour with the iconic Candy Cane Lane. Every year, residents of Schanen Estates deck out their front lawns for a delightful wonderland of giant candy canes and over 300 holiday lights. Admire on foot or drive the four streets: Donegal Drive, Wooldridge Road, McAlpin Drive and Killamet Drive.

Peppermint Lane

Did you know that in the 1960s, the blocks of Chaparral transformed into a festal block party? Today, the tradition lives on with a joyous holiday shopping experience, rows of Christmas lights illuminating the street and local storefronts sparkling with their best decorations to celebrate the season. Don’t forget to stop by Artesian Park’s Winter Wonderland sponsored by the Downtown Advisory Council and The Port’s Holiday Tree in La Retama Park for more holiday décor fun.

H-E-B Christmas Tree

Mr. Bill’s Wonderland

Bringing all the holiday charm is Mr. Bill’s Wonderland on Hampton Street in Brighton Village. For two decades, this has been more than your average Christmas light display. With a choir, a nativity scene, a train, toys and Santa Claus, Mr. Bill’s Wonderland is a mustsee every year.

Mazoch Holiday Display

You haven’t seen it all until you visit the Mazoch family holiday display at 15301 Isabella Court across the bridge on North Padre Island. Their famous display appeared on ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight” in 2015, and for good reason. Every year until 10 p.m. the Mazochs exhibit the glory of Christmas on The Island, featuring pelicans, fish and sea themes mixed with traditional holiday décor.

Life-size Nativity Scene

The Bocanegra family produces a life-sized nativity scene every year, making it a popular décor destination. With live doves, life-like barn animals and more, this ornamented home at 4826 Willowbrook Drive never fails to impress during the holiday season.

Garcia Holiday Light Show

During the week from 6-10 p.m. and until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, stop by 3425 Austin St. to catch more than 50,000 lights flash in sync to holiday tunes on the radio at 100.7 FM.

Christmas on the Beach

Take your light tour to the beach! Every year, Rockport Beach hosts a completely free vehicle light tour, as local businesses and organizations set up displays with various themes to create miles of holiday joy. The displays take place Dec. 4 to Jan. 2, Monday through Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m. and Friday through Sunday, 6 to 10 p.m.

The holidays often evoke feelings of warmth and nostalgia from being surrounded by family and reliving childhood holiday memories – memories that have been made at two local landmarks as a result of the kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity of the families at the core of Candy Cane Lane and Mr. Bill’s Wonderland. Though these communities have experienced tremendous loss this last year, their legacies will live on among family and neighbors that are committed to keeping the magic alive and bringing joy to our faces and warmth to our hearts this holiday season.

Candy Cane Lane

Candy Cane Lane is a true testament to what can happen when neighbors unite with a purpose. The Bocanegra family has had the privilege of witnessing Candy Cane Lane grow into a holiday spectacle. What started as a humble attempt to create holiday cheer for the community has grown to be a wholeneighborhood extravaganza, complete with parades and visits from Santa himself.

It all started over 40 years ago with a spark of creativity and desire to spread holiday cheer. The Boggs family began collecting milk cartons to use in place of bags for a luminaria light display. The idea was that “everyone would take a milk jug of lights, and it would be like the whole neighborhood is holding hands,” says Irene Bocanegra. Eric Barnes, son of the late Elain Barnes, who was known for his tree light displays on Donegal Lane and one of the founders of Candy Cane Lane, joined Theresa to hand out milk jug lights to the community when he was just a kid. This is perhaps the same sentiment that served as a catalyst for Candy Cane Lane becoming what it is today: kind, humble families who love to see joy on kids' faces when they walk by and see the lights.

“Candy Cane Lane would not be what it is had it not been for all the streets participating. It’s all about being communal,” says Bocanegra. People who are new to the neighborhood or perhaps people who celebrate and acknowledge different traditions have rallied around the cause. Some houses have even taken it upon themselves to hand out cookies and hot chocolate.

“They feel cozy and they feel the love of Christmas. This is something that can’t be done in another part of town — the coziness comes from strolling the neighborhood. The beauty of it all is when the kids are walking by with their families. There is nothing else to do except relive childhood memories,” says Bocanegra. The Schanen Estates neighborhood is filled with kind, humble families who have lived in the same house on the same street for years. No one participates out of selfish ambition or name recognition. They do it because they love their neighbors near and far — and want to create joy for them at Christmastime.

Mr. Bill’s Wonderland

Hop on over to the Brighton Village neighborhood and you’ll encounter Mr. Bill’s Wonderland: a handcrafted, immersive, truly one-of-a-kind Christmas experience made with love. Bill Cox, known as “Mr. Bill,” made this wonderland his life’s work after retiring.

His dedication to creating Christmas cheer predates him purchasing the house on Hampton Lane 22 years ago. “He used to live in an apartment off of Weber Rd. Every year he would decorate, and after the first year, neighbors started asking him to decorate their place. By the time he moved out, he had decorated the entire courtyard,” says Anthony Cox, Bill’s son. His festive displays are not without years of dedication to his craft. Upon moving to the house that has become Mr. Bill’s Wonderland, the manger scene was the first display he made. He built the frame and carved all the faces out himself. “Every year, he would make new additions, and he would spend the entirety of the year working on them so they would be ready for Christmas,” Cox says.

The Wonderland is complete with lights, castles, nutcrackers and several mechanical displays such as a Ferris wheel with Snoopy and Winnie the Pooh, and Santa’s Workshop with handmade helpers and details. The sleigh in front of Santa’s Workshop has become a popular photo-op for visitors — ask any local; they probably have a photo in the sleigh and a memory of Mr. Bill talking over a hidden speaker as Santa Claus.“The neighborhood has really gotten behind it. Every year one or two more people have put lights out that haven’t before. There are lots of kids that won’t go to sleep until they get to walk by Mr. Bill’s,” Cox says.

“Our family bought the house across the street just to help with this and we’ve been there for 16 years,” he continues. “We’ve been through all of it, really — we’ve helped, every year, come up with ideas and troubleshoot issues. To see how the community reacts has been beautiful. It’s been wonderful being able to share it with the community. I have more memories than I can count.” With Bill Cox’s passing last year and the house selling, his legacy will continue to live on through his family and friends on neighboring streets. Anthony says they “will do as much as we can for as long as we can,” and plans to have most of the existing displays in front of his house across the street this year.

The community has certainly felt the loss of a cherished holiday visionary responsible for countless memories of Christmas cheer. Mr. Bill’s is so much more than lights — the attention to detail and creativity showcase his caring and thoughtful nature, and the magic and sense of wonder his displays create will continue to live on.

December brings live theatre productions to celebrate the season

Curious about what's in store at your local theatre this season? Harbor Playhouse is running its 13th production of A Christmas Carol , fans of the classic A Christmas Story can catch it over at Aurora Arts Theatre and the enchanting tale of It's a Wonderful Life will hit the stage at Port Aransas Community Theatre. We sat down with the directors of each production to get the inside scoop on what you can expect.

It’s a Wonderful Life, Port Aransas Community Theatre

In conversation w/ Jessica Golden Matthews

JC: What can audiences expect to see in this year’s production?

JM: We are creating, as we call it, theatre of the mind. It's not your typical stage show. Think of it more like a radio show of old: A cast of nine, taking on the challenge of nearly 50 roles, using only their voices and the collective imagination of our audience. We'll have live musical accompaniment, plus a mix of prerecorded and live sound effects created before your very eyes (and ears) – from footsteps to a cash register to a body falling in a faint. This show creates a whole new feel and, we hope, a new appreciation for audio dramas.

JC: What are you most excited for regarding this year's rendition?

JM: A lost scene, cut from the shooting script, has been added to our show, and it answers a few questions regarding one of the main characters. It's large shoes to fill as Pete Lutz truly did the groundwork for this show. He put together the script, sound effects and so much more. Having been a part of the cast for the past four years, I am excited to take on the role of director, bringing the show to the Port Aransas Community Theater for a second year. It's a Wonderful Life is a true classic that has been a traditional staple of my family's holiday celebration, and I am very honored to help make it a tradition for the Coastal Bend.

JC: What can audiences expect out of this year’s production?

DA: You're going to see a lot of happy, excited characters singing and dancing and enjoying the holiday season. Our lead is just so much fun to watch on stage. He truly makes you feel like he really wants this present, and he isn’t going to get it. We’ve also got a younger group of kids [on stage] this year and they are so talented. They all learned to tap dance for this one song we're doing. And of course, you know, kids being kids, they know every line of every person in the entire show. My favorite part of the show is when they're up on Santa's lap. We've got a funny Santa Claus this year and lots of elves that will make you laugh. There was a lot of talent that auditioned, and I was very fortunate.

JC: What is something unique about Aurora's rendition of this production?

DA: This is not a show that fits for a stage the size of the Aurora Arts Theater, so it will take a little imagination. It's going to be very creative in how we present it because it's very difficult [for us to create] a house, exterior settings and a school all [on our stage].

JC: What are you most excited about for this year's production?

MS: This is my directorial debut, but I've been in A Christmas Carol [at Harbor Playhouse] the past eight years. Each year, every cast member has those “I wish we could do this, and I wish we could do that" moments. I finally get to have those moments for me! This year, my challenge has been to bring audiences what they know and add some new life to it to make it a little bit different from what we've seen in the past. It has been fun putting in those differences while still staying within the bounds of copyright.

JC: What role does the cast play in giving the annual production new life?

MS: Everybody on stage is local talent, meaning we don't get paid for this. We do it because we love it. The great thing about the show is that we've had people who have done it yearly. One of the things we considered when casting the show this year was making sure we [put people in roles they haven’t played before.] So, it's giving new people opportunities to bring their touch to these characters while still being part of a show they know and love.

Dr. Rosanna Whidden is board certified and a diplomate for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Born and raised in Corpus Christi, she graduated from Incarnate Word Academy, then earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. She is a graduate of Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry, where she also completed her residency program and received her certificate in pediatric dentistry.

Now Experiencing: Self-Defense Classes

Whether you want to develop skills for basic self-defense, or are interested in taking up martial arts for the art form that it is, a self-defense class at a local martial arts school is a great place to start. The world of martial arts encompasses several methods of practice, each with techniques of its own. We sent a couple of our team members to experience two different self-defense classes at local schools to learn new skills and to interact with martial arts in its different forms.

Self-defense at Corpus Christi Family Martial Arts Academy:

The thought of taking a self-defense class is one that’s crossed my mind several times, yet I've never acted upon. I had imagined such a class feeling uncomfortable to participate in, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth.

I took an evening self-defense class at Corpus Christi Family Martial Arts Academy, whose self-defense curriculum consists of Karate, Japanese Jujitsu, Krav Maga and Kung-fu. Owner and Grand Master Mark Timmerman led the class, which started with a few laps around the gym and a series of warmup movements. Grand Master Timmerman has extensive real-world and teaching experience, which was nice to learn from for a beginner like me.

We then went into a series of partner exercises that focused on brush blocking. This type of blocking can off-balance your opponent without heavily interfering with your own equilibrium. A great aspect of the class is that it doesn't just teach martial arts techniques; it shows real-world applications in self-defense and gives advice and guidance along the way.

Though the nature of the class might initially bring about uneasiness, the dojo truly maintains an inviting, safe and welcoming environment. The self-defense class is open to all ages and is beginner-level friendly. Taking this class allowed me to truly think about what it would mean to protect myself against harm –something I honestly haven’t put much thought or practice into but am glad I now have. One thing to note is self-defense certainly isn’t a one-and-done type of lesson, so committing yourself to several lessons is a good first step in gaining hands-on experience to defend yourself.

Women’s self-defense at Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Upon arriving at the self-defense class at Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, led by owner Leo Cantu, I joined a class of about 20 students to learn and practice the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I participated in a quick but rigorous warm up with the whole class and then another instructor, Arnold Garza, briefed me on the basics of self-defense that simulate realistic attack and escape situations.

We began with a series of submissions where I was paired up with another woman from the class. I learned the figure four armlock, in which I bent my opponent’s arm and elbow up toward the ceiling, while controlling their body and stopping the opponent from moving their arm.

I then learned the armlock, which aims to hyperextend the opponent’s elbow joint by using my legs, hips and hands to isolate the opponent’s arm while controlling their body. We practiced these submissions along with other isolated techniques and submissions several times over the course of the class.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, known as “the gentle art,” is designed to allow the weaker to defeat the stronger in a nonviolent way. The Gracie Barra Method is specifically designed to be inclusive regardless of gender, build, etc. This diversity was reflected in the class, creating an environment where students can be challenged by others and therefore improve their skills.

Once my orientation was over, I was able to observe the other students engage in a fight where they were able to seamlessly recall submissions they’ve learned and put them into practice with an opponent.

Beauty, to me, is not just about what you look like on the outside. It’s how you feel physically from within, and the way we feel inside is so important to our quality of life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been obsessed with fashion and beauty products. It wasn’t until later in life that my love for skincare, nutrition, health and wellness came along. Growing up, I was super active and heavily involved in different sports. I loved being busy and always having something to do. But in my late teens/early 20s, my health definitely took a backseat.

In 2016, I was working full-time for a medical company specializing in hormone replacement therapy, and working part-time at a cycle studio in Dallas. Between the two, my love for fitness, nutrition and health grew. I was learning about how I could balance my hormones through diet and exercise, which was all very fascinating to me. That’s when I really took hold of my health.

Fast forward to today, I’m a mom, a wife and a Realtor — and much like when I was a teen, I feel like I thrive in a busy environment. Which is why it’s so important for me to have a morning and nighttime routine to help me assess the day ahead or wind down from a crazy one.

I always give myself 30-45 minutes in the morning to just sit and be with my thoughts. This is an absolute non-negotiable for me. I start out with my green gut shot, and then enjoy a cup of coffee while I check emails, watch the news or plan out my day. Most days, if I’m not meeting with clients, I like to go makeup-free to let my skin breathe. I’ll do my morning skincare routine, add some tinted SPF and I’m good to go.

As for nighttime, a hot bath or shower is a must. It’s so nice to wash the day away and decompress. No matter how tired I am, I never go a night without cleansing my face or doing my skincare routine.

A Good Night’s Rest

Our hometowns always hold a special place in our hearts, and that is most certainly the case for Brittany Wendl-Aoshima and Masato Andrew Aoshima. After years of moving all over the country for medical school and residency, the Aoshimas decided to return home to Corpus Christi.

“Masa and I both grew up in Corpus,” said Brittany. “We were living in Fargo, North Dakota, and we knew we were going to be moving back home. Masa saw the listing for our home. The house was more pictured for the land, [and that’s what we were going to buy it for], but then realized there was a house here. It’s so tranquil. We just kind of fell in love with it. We knew it was home.”

After their purchase, Brittany and Masa were determined to make the house a reflection of their personality. “My biggest objective, because I mainly work from home, was that I wanted to bring the outside in — hence all the green. It’s my favorite color. I wanted to make it feel very zen and very homey, but I also wanted lots of color,” said Brittany.

The grandiose Asian screen in the office was discovered at a local secondhand shop and reframed by the owners.

Her natural sense of style and true creativity shine through every design detail in the home. Brittany, who is a real estate agent, artist and decorator, even hand-painted the faux finish and murals on the walls of the guest bedroom, office and primary bedroom.

Masa was also involved in the home’s design. “Masa has a creative sense as well,” said Brittany. “We would go to stores, and he would say, ‘I really love this piece.’” Brittany and Masa’s many homesteads over the years had resulted in unique treasures they could eventually display in their dream home.

The antique chandelier in the dining room was their first big purchase when they were living in New York City. “We held on to that piece for 10 years.

We bought it during medical school and knew it was something unique that we wouldn’t find again,” said Brittany.

The Chinese urns in the living room are from the same warehouse in Brooklyn where they bought the chandelier. Brittany found the carved green doors that frame the hallway to the bedrooms at Pickers Paradise in San Antonio, while Masa discovered the vintage Asian screen in the office at a local second-hand store.

“I always love filling the house with conversation pieces,” said Masa — a collection that includes the diver’s helmet sculpture in the kitchen. “I was very drawn to it,” he said. “It represents who we are. We take chances. We love adventure and love to travel.”

Another conversation starter is the couple’s breathtaking primary bathroom. “When we were picking out that green tile, Masa recommended that I pick the blue tile because it was safe. I’m not safe, so I picked the green,” said Brittany. The other stunning detail of the bathroom is the eye-catching floral wallpaper that covers every wall. The deep blue vanity, brass accents and striking marble tile finish off the space. These bold design decisions throughout the home have resulted in a space that is eclectic, moody, global, zen and full of heart.

This soul is felt throughout the neighborhood. “We always wanted to be a homestead for the

community,” said Brittany. “When we moved in, we noticed every fence had a gate. We found out that the original owner, Marie Manning, had the tradition of welcoming neighbors to pick fruit from her trees, so we’ve continued that tradition. We wanted to bring awareness of that good sense of community and neighborhood that is still alive today.”

Not only do the Aoshimas often welcome neighbors to their property, but they also still have a connection to the daughter of the original owner, who visits her childhood home every few months. “There’s just something about this house. Everybody comes back to visit."

arrots are native to the mountains of Afghanistan, where they were first cultivated at least 3,000 years ago. Those original Afghan carrots were purple and bitter. The soldiers who crossed Afghanistan, from Alexander the Great to the Mongols and Persians, carried Afghan carrot seeds back to their homelands and spread the cultivation of carrots throughout the Old World.

In the 1700s, the Dutch developed a new carrot that was slender, orange and sweet. This variety, called the Long Orange, became the basis for all modern carrots; its descendants are virtually the only carrots available in the supermarkets of America.

However, older and more diverse varieties are coming back into style. Visit Baker Creek Seed Company (rareseeds.com) online for the best selection of heirloom carrot varieties. Here are our favorites:

Red Core Chanteray: Best for sandy soil. Grows long and slender. This is the sweetest carrot of all; great raw, juiced or cooked.

Danver’s Half-Long: Best for clay-rich soil. Grows up to 7” or less where soil is difficult to penetrate. They are short, but can grow fat for a nice appearance. Featuring great flavor raw or cooked: They're good for breaking up soil for next planting.

Black Nebula: Stunning black carrot from India, this variant is not sweet but has a nice, interesting, berry-like flavor. It retains a purplish/black color after cooking. Black Nebula carrot juice is gorgeous and delicious.

Pusa Asita Black Carrot: Another excellent black carrot from India. Taking 100 days to mature means an April or May harvest, which is perfect because this carrot, unlike the others, can take the heat. Also, if we get an early spring and summer, the Pusa Asita will perform where the other varieties may turn bitter.

Carrots like a good frost and actually grow sweetest in cold weather. Companion plant your carrot seeds with radishes (see below) for a clever gardening hack. Planting in December brings a January radish harvest and a March/April carrot harvest.

GROWING UP

Full sun. Plant from seed. Well-tilled, well-drained, sandy soil. Add copious compost to clay-rich soil; till deeply. Companion plant with radishes — combine carrot and radish seeds 1:1 in a cup of clean, fine sand. Broadcast the sand/seed mixture evenly across the garden bed, then rake the bed, draw lines 2” apart down the bed and pour seed/sand mixture into lines and rake into soil. Water often until sprouting, then as needed.

PROFILING

Carrots take three weeks just to sprout, but radishes mature within 20 to 30 days. Harvesting radishes helps thin carrots (a tedious job). Thin any remaining carrots to final spacing of two/three inches. Carrots mature in 70 to 100 days. Harvest when green tops are bushy and roots show an inch across. If hard to pull, water garden before harvest.

RECS

Carrot tops have a vibrant, slightly sweet flavor and are a great stand-in for parsley in tabbouleh or stirred into shrimp pasta. They are great shredded in salads, muffins, straight out of the fridge or tossed in soups. A great way to prepare them is to roast them with a little olive oil, honey and za’atar. Don’t bother peeling your carrots, but make sure to wash them well if you leave the skins on.

FUN FACTS

Carrots are nature’s best source of beta-carotene, the anti-oxidant that gives carrots their orange color. Our bodies convert beta-carotene to vitamin A, which is essential for eye health. Carrots are also a key source of vitamin C, folate, copper, potassium, manganese and iron. Purple carrots are rich in anthocyanins, which help fight diabetes and cancer. Carrots are a garden super food.

Going Big in Small Spaces

The holiday season … don’t you just love decking the halls and making your spaces extra festive and glamorous? But if you have trouble figuring out how to decorate a small space for the holidays, you’re not alone. You have to balance form and function, especially in a space that will host family and friends, such as a dining room.

My dining room, or truly more like my dining space, is about 10’x10’ square, but I love finding creative, unique ways to decorate it for the holidays. My approach is always to make the set-up practical for entertaining, and also a beautiful backdrop for enjoying the season. Here’s some tips that will help you decorate any smaller space in your home.

DECK THE HALLS

Go big with the garland: If you can’t squeeze in a slim Christmas tree due to floor space, opt for using a beautiful garland. With many options out there such as flocking or glitter, it’s easy to customize by adding lights, floral picks and ribbon. I recommend laying it askew for extra drama.

Ornaments galore: Now is the time to take out those beautiful decorative vases or bowls and fill them up with ornaments as a way to incorporate colors and different textures. I like to layer in at least one metallic color for extra sparkle.

Decorate your chairs: Adding a jeweled wreath to the back of chairs adds a personal touch to the area without taking up any floor space. These wreaths are easy and quick to make and you can use them year after year as part of your decor.

Pick ONE focal area: In my space, the mantel is the focal point of the dining room, which is why it has the most decor. By keeping the rest of the space minimally decorated, the focal area gets to be the star and makes an impact, while not overwhelming the room as a whole.

The Art on Ayers Experience

BREATHING LIFE INTO FORGOTTEN NEIGHBORHOODS WITH PUBLIC CREATIVITY

local artist Jeremy Flores felt inspired. A developer with an artistic vision had poured energy and resources into Wynwood, a historic neighborhood in Miami, transforming it with public art. The results compelled Flores to bring that same energy back home, and he knew just the area to begin.

The city has been focused on the Downtown Revitalization project, which includes the addition of colorful art by talented artists and more art-themed events. Bringing art to the forefront of the city’s culture has long been Flores’ dream. However, he noticed that since growth has been focused heavily on the downtown area, some lower-income communities aren’t receiving as much attention. This sentiment is what inspired Flores to start his latest project, Art on Ayers.

“I’ve seen art transform communities all over the country, and now I want to use that energy to help lower-income communities in my city,” he said about his mission. He explained that “the main goal is to use the power of art to uplift our underserved communities, while also providing support to them in a very real way.”

The Art on Ayers project will involve painting murals up and down Ayers Street to breathe color and life back into the area, and to remind people of how beautiful the part of town was — and could be again.

Art on Ayers’ next event, Cleaning Up the Corner, will take place Jan. 13-15 and will focus on freshening up a street corner in preparation for a new mural. For more infor mation or to get involved, visit the website.

Much like the revitalization of the Wynwood neighborhood in Miami, Art on Ayers will focus on bringing color and vibrant designs to the sides of buildings, but it is also intended to give youth in the area a different type of goal or perspective on life.

By growing up in La Armada, an affordable housing community on Ayers Street, Flores has firsthand knowledge of the stigma surrounding the neighborhood, and how these reputations can negatively influence young minds. He hopes that the addition of colorful murals in the neighborhood will bring the positive attention this area needs, and in turn, inspire the kids who live in the surrounding neighborhoods to pursue their dreams, work toward positive goals and stay out of trouble.

In addition to painting a variety of murals in the area, the Art on Ayers project will also focus on restoring old signage and buildings in need of a healthy dose of TLC. Art on Ayers also hosts community events, such as its Back to School Backpack Giveaway.

Flores is also working to re-open a creative development center in the area after having to shut down his former downtown location due to the pandemic. This center is intended to give kids an opportunity to thrive in the arts, and a safe space in the neighborhood to do so.

The local artist and community advocate is thrilled to be at the forefront of Art on Ayers. His goal is to bring a new energy to the area, as well as new opportunities for growth to those who inhabit it. Three to four years down the road, Flores envisions a neighborhood known for its art, rooted in its vibrant culture and celebrated because of it.

A BREAKFAST BOUNTY FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

You’ve gotten the biggest aluminum tree you can find, perhaps even painted it pink. You’ve bested the neighbor’s decorations and blown a fuse or two, in classic Griswold fashion. You’ve hung stockings by the chimney with care. Another magical Christmas morn is nigh, but what to feed the starving masses?

My biggest “bah humbug” on Christmas morning is leaving the merriment in order to put together a last-minute breakfast that I haven’t had a chance to think about before that very second. Not this year! This year, we’re

making a new tradition where we get to continue the fun of Christmas together, as a family, in the kitchen.

If your family is anything like mine, enticing them to desert their new toys is no small feat. We need a menu as fun as an official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle. Luckily, we needn’t worry anyone will shoot their eye out when they’ve got their hands on cinnamon hand pies. A salute to a childhood classic, these small tarts are portable and can satiate the kiddos while they recount their Christmas loot. I also

put the kids to work rolling out the dough, a task they merrily play paper-rockscissors for. They’ll love choosing what festive shape their tart will take. We chose Christmas trees, which narrowly beat out angels and snowmen. The best part is watching how creative the darlings get with icing and red and green sprinkles.

To round out our family-friendly Christmas fare, we’re making partridge (nests) in a pear tree. Tailor this sheet pan meal to your tastes: use sweet potatoes, substitute gruyere or prosciutto, maybe try adding a southwest flavor kick with

bell peppers and pepper-jack cheese. These treats are a perfect nibble that hits all the high points of a great breakfast — buttery hash browns dotted with cheese, smoky bacon and a runny egg that oozes when you cut into it. If you don’t like your eggs runny, just cook them until the white congeals.

Hopefully you’ve missed walking in on Uncle Frank in the shower and Ol’ St. Nick left more than coal under your tree. Gather round the table for a stress-free, no fuss Christmas brunch. And always, “Remember no man is a failure who has friends,” family and good food. Merry Christmas.

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tbsp granulated sugar 1 tsp kosher salt 16 tbsp cold, unsalted butter, cubed 1/2 cup ice water 1 egg 1 tbsp milk

FILLING

1/4 cup dark brown sugar 2 tsp all-purpose flour 3/4 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt 3 tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature 1/4 tsp vanilla bean paste

ICING

1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar 1 tbsp milk 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp vanilla extract 1/4 tsp salt

DIRECTIONS:

For the crust: Add flour, sugar and salt to a food processor and pulse to combine. Add cubed butter to flour mixture and pulse another 10 seconds. Finally, add water to mixture and mix another 15 seconds, until mixture starts to come together. Form dough into a ball and cover in plastic sling wrap. Store in the fridge while you preheat the oven and make the filling.

Prepare the filling: Preheat oven to 375°F. Combine brown sugar, all-purpose flour, cinnamon and salt in a medium size bowl and whisk to combine. Using a fork or pastry blender, cut butter and vanilla bean paste into the dry ingredients until a paste is formed.

Assemble the pies: Remove dough from the oven and place on a well-floured surface. Roll dough to 1/8” thickness. In a small bowl, scramble the egg and milk together until blended. Brush a thin layer of the egg mixture onto the dough using a pastry brush. Using your favorite large cookie cutter, cut as many shapes as you can from the dough. Spoon one heaping tablespoon of filling into the center of the dough and carefully spread across the surface of the cutout, leaving a 1/8” border. Top with a second cutout and press the edges with your fingers to seal. Prick the surface of the pie with a fork, and press the tines of the fork around the edges to ensure they have sealed. Transfer hand pie to a baking sheet. Repeat for the remaining cutouts. Form a ball with any remaining dough and repeat the steps listed for assembling the pies until all the dough has been used.

Baking and Icing: Place prepared pies in a preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes. For those who like their tarts tender and soft, remove the pies once the bottom is cooked, but before they begin to brown. If you like your pie slightly crispy, leave in the oven until golden brown along the edges. While the pies bake, stir ingredients for the cinnamon icing in a separate bowl until a thin icing has formed. Remove the pies from the oven and let cool to room temperature before spooning on icing and spreading it with the back of a spoon to cover the surface. Alternately, enjoy the pies naked hot from the oven with a hot cup of coffee.

Partridge Nests

Makes 6 nests

PREP TIME: 5 minutes

COOK TIME: 35 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

3 lbs shredded hash browns, frozen 3 tbsp olive oil

1 tsp Italian seasoning

3/4 tsp salt, divided 1/2 tsp black pepper, divided 1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 lb bacon, sliced, cut into segments 1/2 cup Parmigiana Reggiano cheese, shredded 6 eggs, preferably pastured from a local farm

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 400°F. In a large bowl, combine hash browns, olive oil, Italian seasoning, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper and garlic powder, tossing to combine. Spread hash brown mixture on a rimmed baking sheet that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Lay bacon slices on top of hash browns, leaving at least an inch of space between the slices. Cook in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until edges begin to brown.

Remove from the oven and sprinkle with cheese. Create six nests lined with bacon slices. Form a well in the center about 2” in diameter. Crack an egg into each well and season with remaining salt and pepper. Return to the oven for 10-12 minutes, until eggs have reached desired level of doneness. Garnish with green onions, chives or fresh parsley and serve warm.

MILKY COFFEE BAR SEEKS TO SERVE CREATIVE FLAVORS AND PERSONALITY, WHILE PROVIDING A SAFE SPACE FOR ALL

ocal artist and entertainer Frankie Reyna sees Milky Coffee Bar as his love letter to the community. A coffee shop beyond coffee, the beginning of a good day and a safe space for all, the new spot brings warmth for both the mug and the people of the Coastal Bend.

“A lot of people have coffee on a daily basis. It is a necessity for so many,” Reyna said. “If it is such a need and an everyday expectation, let’s bring some personality into it! Let’s bring some culture to it; let’s bring some excitement to it.”

Though it’s a coffee bar at its core, Reyna intended Milky to extend so much further than just a cup of joe. The drinks are a collection of hot takes on many cafe classics, partly originating from nostalgia for his and his generation’s collective childhood memories.

The menu will feature small batch specialty coffee and all the classics such as cold brew and americanos, as well as rotating tasty innovations. The Strawberry Milky Horchata is a homemade pink drink that may invoke a memory of the first time you tried strawberry milk. There’s also a banana pudding number that folks will definitely want to try, complete

with cinnamon syrup-soaked bananas, crispy Texas-made wafers and a Mexican vanilla mousse. “Everything has a little bit of flair and a little bit of personality — maybe you’re then able to find your new favorite, and it becomes a part of who you are now,” Reyna said.

Though Reyna has been a successful entrepreneur in the Coastal Bend with varying business ventures, he put extra love into designing every aspect of his first coffee shop with care. Milky Coffee Bar features white walls and coffee tones contrasting the onyx counter finish. As an artist of multiple mediums, Reyna wanted the space to give off a chic-yet-zen atmosphere where he would want to hang out, with menu items he’d personally order.

He also credits the support and insight given by Evana Reyna, his sister and Riptide Salon owner. The shop’s name was actually from a suggestion she had made.

Once the vision was clear, the design elements and details followed. The shop has an accent wall, warm lighting fixtures and a rustic cottage sliding door.

All in all, Milky Coffee Bar is a celebration of community and a safe space for the queer community. When opening the shop, Reyna decided this would be “a place for the weirdos, a place for the queerdos, a place for the disenfranchised, for the misunderstood.”

He continued, “I want people to [feel comfortable doing things such as] having their first queer date here or maybe this be the first place they run to when they were going through a breakup. I want this to be a place people can go to where they can walk in having the worst day, and with a drink, a sandwich and a smile … their day just got better.”

s its name suggests, Bluewater Cowboy is a convergence of land and sea. BWC, as friends and patrons affectionately know it, serves steak, sushi and most everything in between. Overlooking the coastal town of Port Aransas, the three-story concept offers a casual dining experience with an expansive menu and live music to Port A locals, visiting families and event guests.

“I haven’t tried anything here I don’t like,” pronounces Taylor — the mixologist on shift — from behind the bar, fashioned out of a converted sport fishing boat built by the owner himself. The nautical setup is outfitted with impressive deep-sea fishing rods and reels and lined with everyone’s favorite liquors. A few of Taylor’s favorite menu items include the chopped steak, tempura fried broccoli and Alan’s pesto pasta.

Brian — chef, kitchen manager and veteran of the restaurant business — beams as he sets a steaming plate on the table. He uses his lobster bisque as the base for his crowd-pleasing lobster pasta, a time-saving step that ensures the favorite entrée is perfectly seasoned every time.

Fan favorite menu items include Combination Sashimi (Moriawase), Avocado Salad and the Dragon Tail Roll.

Turns out, this is one of many miracles Brian and his staff accomplish in the kitchen to create every plate made to order. “We won’t even batter the fish until the order is placed,” he said, which is a fine feat in today’s faster food environment.

The lobster pasta is involuntarilyrolling-your-eyes good. A kick of cayenne and bell pepper counters the sweet lobster in rich sauce. The wait staff joke that customers often change their order when they see BWC’s lobster pasta or hand-crafted sushi emerge from the kitchen. Speaking of which, Dave — BWC’s sushi chef — has returning patrons from all over the state of Texas. His original rolls are extravagant and

creative, and he enjoys experimenting with flavors and hosting special events at the restaurant.

We recommend sopping up the last of the cream sauce with a remaining corner of parmesan garlic bread and finishing things off with a slice of white chocolate bourbon pecan pie from Snake Farm Pie Co.

After dinner, aid digestion with a stroll through the BWC’s mercantile. Memorialize the trip with coastal home décor, a wayfarer buttondown or merch branded with BWC’s caricature of a cowboy ridin’ a marlin.

ELECTRIC STREETCARS WERE A STEP TOWARD OUR MODERN TRANSIT SYSTEM

Someone in Roy Miller’s (1883-1946) generation saw the entirety of the development of Corpus Christi’s public transportation system. Their first memories of public transportation would have been of the steam dummy streetcar line. People could even ride from downtown out to the Alta Vista hotel, between present-day Cole and Ropes parks on Ocean Drive, in a steam-powered passenger coach resembling a railroad car.

Concurrent with the steam dummy was the Gussett Street Railway, offering horse-drawn streetcars. This eliminated the dangers of the steam power, while allowing regular service on a designated line. But the horses needed care and made a mess of the streets, so the line wasn’t a sustainable business as the city grew.

In 1910, electric streetcars arrived in Corpus Christi with the start of the Corpus Christi Street & Interurban Railway Company. Daniel Hewitt came to town as a streetcar promoter to found the company, and sold it just a year after its first run on March 28, 1910. The line continued to expand through another sale in 1914, before changing its name to Corpus Christi Railway & Light Co. in 1915. Electric streetcars were fixtures on Corpus Christi streets until 1934, which is even later than commercial air travel coming to town with the 1928 opening of Cliff Maus Airport.

Streetcars and buses coexisted for five years before the flexibility of buses won out. In one lifetime, Corpus Christi saw technological innovation completely change the landscape of public transportation.
