Farewell to Thee, 2023 Oh, December … it really is the most wonderful time of the year. Cooler temperatures, time spent with loved ones you don’t always get to see, sparkling Christmas lights line the streets and a contagious, joyful spirit fills the air. By the time you’re reading this letter, if you’ve yet to switch gears and embrace this time of year fully, I am sure this issue will aid in giving you that last little nudge. For this month’s cover feature, we called in professionals to aid in inspiring your holiday decor. Starting on page 36, Terrie Moore, Jo Anne Howell, Buck Matthews and Kim Hewerdine style four festive vignettes and provide expert tips on how to really deck the halls this season. Continuing the yuletide theme, readers will discover local initiatives spreading cheer for kids in our community in this season of giving (pg. 20) and gain inspiration for DIY gifts such as a tea kit with local goodies or a homemade spice rub (pg. 60). Also inside this last issue of 2023, Debra Young Hatch explores the incredible ways in which music therapy is transforming lives right here in the Coastal Bend. On page 43, Young
Hatch details the work being done at Therapy Connections of South Texas and how its programs bring hope to children and their families. Writing the December issue’s Letter from the Editor always forces reflection – albeit, a bit earlier than I’d do my personal reflections – on the preceding year. It serves to express gratitude for all the year has brought us. In 2023, we brought back The Local’s List Party after a three-year hiatus with a literal bang at Whataburger Field, which concluded in an epic fireworks show. The City Regional Magazine Association recognized The Bend as a finalist in the CRMA Awards’ Cover Excellence category – a category in which our publication competed against some of the nation’s largest city-regional magazines. Our team relocated its office into one of Corpus Christi’s oldest buildings brimming with character and history. We brought on several new contributing photographers and writers who continue to bring fresh perspectives to our pages. And, perhaps most importantly, we shared hundreds of local stories, all geared toward uplifting this community. I’m so grateful you’ve continued to turn these pages for (almost) a decade now. It’s one of my life’s greatest joys to play a small role in sharing the stories of our Coastal Bend community with you all. With that, and on behalf of the entire Bend family, I wish you and yours a happy and healthy holiday season and a joyous end to the year. I can’t wait to see what 2024 has in store for us all – I’ll see you there!

to feel more inclined to share their new merchandise or marketing tools on social media. KC: What is the AR Map of Downtown Corpus Christi and what inspired you to create it? MM: The AR Map is an augmented reality infrastructure for public landscapes, allowing for murals in downtown Corpus Christi to come to life. I got the idea to create it because, in many sci-fi movies, you’ll often see holograms or floating screens in public areas, bringing more entertainment to areas that may otherwise seem empty. I reached out to [a local muralist] on Instagram, and, with him on board, we created the first augmented-reality mural in the Coastal Bend. The AR Map is currently powered via QR codes, so we bought a sandwich board to put in front of the mural, and this allowed anyone walking by to access the new attraction.

At just 18, Matthew Morel started his own LED sign-making business, MRM Designs, with his brother. Within six months, he was making signs for YouTube celebrity channels such as Mr. Beast, which meant his creations would potentially be seen by upwards of 205 million subscribers. Then, COVID-19 hit and, subsequently, materials became harder to source. The now 22-year-old spent time figuring out his next steps and landed on the curation of Snapchat Lenses – an augmented reality experience within the app that transforms how users see the imagery. Realizing the boundless opportunities the world of AR presented, he dove head-first into the craft. Today, that entails creating an AR map of downtown Corpus Christi, bringing new life to the imagery around us. KC: Your business MRM Designs now focuses on designing AR merchandise, filters, maps and business cards. What led you to make the pivot? MM: A common feature in most AR software called “marker tracking” allows you to feed the software an image and have it track your custom design to whatever the image is printed on. I saw this as a cool way to make a new concept for shirts, posters, stickers, business cards, etc. It brings life to everything and can even be shareable, allowing users 18 The Bend
KC: How did the map expand from one mural to including other locations around downtown? MM: I wanted to create multiple augmented reality experiences around the downtown area. I reached out to The Gold Fish and offered to make a free concept for their mural outside of the bar. They gladly accepted, and we got to work. AR murals have already been done in other cities, and I wanted to separate my work. So, a month after introducing this mural, I created a new feature for this Snapchat Lens called AR View. With AR View, the user can split their phone screen in half, allowing them to put the phone inside of one of our own disposable AR headsets, custom-made specifically for these murals and passed out during big events in the area. I began reaching out to more people about becoming a part of The AR Map and partnered with local businesses such as Blue Shore Pedal Lounge and Mesquite Street Pizza, and it was a hit. People loved playing with the AR installations and sharing them on their social media, gaining businesses a lot of extra publicity. A
s a marketing director and a woman in my 40s, I feel as though I have not been prepared for all life has thrown at me, in particular, the metamorphosis of my skin and body. On this personal journey, self-care has always been important to me because it plays a crucial role in my overall physical, mental, social and emotional health. I’ve come to find that if I look good, I feel good. Aging gracefully means different things to different women depending on where they are in life. Making time for myself is a daily challenge, but I make my best effort with healthy eating habits, at-home workouts and the occasional trip to a medspa. A healthy work-life balance for me includes trying to keep up with the ever-demanding roles of being a good wife and mother to my husband and three children as well as being a leader at my hospital and to my team. One thing my mother always told me was to never go to bed without washing my face, and, to this day, I can count how many times I have done so. I also drink lots of water and have recently started meditating when I am feeling stressed or anxious. I love being outdoors and just getting up and moving, even if it's just completing simple household chores. As a mother, I feel compelled to add the importance of beauty in character, and it is something I feel needs to be passed on to young girls everywhere. As we raise our daughters into womanhood, we need to remember to instill and teach them about kindness, trust, respect, responsibility and the beauty within.

stablished in 2015, Corpus Christi Rimz, a local adaptive sports league, founded by Eric Shandy, Carlos Cavazos and Moses Reyes, has a vision to inspire differently-abled individuals to feel empowered by team sports. “As a team, we like to use the term ‘handi-capable’ to prove to others that we are capable of achieving what we set our minds to,” said Shandy, who also plays on the team. “People may be under the impression that wheelchair basketball [means we’re] slow or lethargic, but that is far from the narrative.” An official team within the National Wheelchair Basketball Association, CC Rimz is one of the 225-plus teams across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The NWBA is organized by divisions including mens, womens, high performance, collegiate, junior, prep and divisions I, II and III. CC Rimz is a part of Division III, and its season lasts from mid-September to late-March, with a national divisional championship tournament in early April. The CC Rimz made back-toback appearances at the national tournament level the last two seasons, and are hoping to make it a three-peat as the current season’s end nears. As for the game itself, the rules are fairly similar to the type of basketball most are familiar with. “Wheelchair basketball is very hardhitting and action-packed with similarities to ‘able-bodied basketball,’” Shandy said. 32 The Bend

The basketball hoops are 10-feet high and traveling rules consist of players being allowed just two wheel pushes before a dribble, similar to the two-stepper dribble rule. A couple of differences include a 30-second shot clock as opposed to 24 seconds and five personal fouls instead of six. While the physical activity aspect of the team certainly aids in the overall wellbeing of its players, the ability to find camaraderie with one another and build self-confidence is just as important. CC Rimz players gain a level of independence and assuredness that translates both on and off the court and inspires the next generation of teammates. “Knowing that in your backyard there is a group of men and women inspiring others in the only way they know how – that is what makes CC Rimz so great,” Shandy said, when speaking to the importance of access to adaptive sports in a community. “When we get recognized by the same youth we strive to inspire, it makes us feel accomplished and that we’re doing something good for our community.” As a NWBA team, the CC Rimz is required to host a home tournament. This season’s tournament, Bayfront Classic, will take place on Dec. 9-10 at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Participating teams will travel from Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Arizona, Arkansas and Nevada. “Our goal [with the tournament] is to show our community that wheelchair basketball is a real thing,” Shandy said. “We want our [local] community to come out and show continued support not only for our home team but for wheelchair basketball as a whole.”

A Grand Staircase Tip No. 1 Add decorative elements to the steps or a table near the staircase. This is an easy way to enhance the railing’s decor while utilizing your favorite holiday items that don’t seem to have a designated home.

A FRESH TAKE ON TREEs Tip No. 1 Holiday trees don’t need to represent the typical pine, spruce or fir. Find trees made of unconventional materials like punched tin trees, or get crafty and create a one-of-akind tree for yourself.
Tip No. 2 Layering the trees by height and width is key to creating a visual impact. Keep taller trees in the back and flanking the sides, short, wide trees layered in the center.
Tip No. 3 To make a cohesive scene, share materials throughout. Think tree toppers, tree skirts and significant accent pieces. Christmas tree is typically the focal point of any home’s holiday decor. Although decorating the tree as a family can create meaningful memories, some years, you just might not feel up to digging through all those ornaments. Think outside the box and allow yourself permission to shake things up year to year. tepping onto the porch of the small, tan house with bright red doors at Therapy Connections, the musical notes are immediately audible, giving rise to the notion something special is taking place inside. Within the walls of this unassuming, clapboard structure, music transforms the lives of children and families in the Coastal Bend daily. “What we do here for kids is life-changing,” said Robin Palmer Blue, Therapy Connections of South Texas owner and executive director. “Through music, we address nonmusical goals for children to help them with everything from verbal and non-verbal communication to focus, memory, sensory awareness, social interaction, motor function and cognition. We are much like the Pied Piper for kids. We create songs 44 The Bend
for everything and the kids follow along.” Upon entering one of the two musical therapy rooms, it’s easy to see how the center’s therapists – equipped with their Pied Piper skills – would certainly have sway here. The room is replete with every instrument imaginable to pique a child’s interest – from a complete drum set to a keyboard, guitars, ukuleles, bells, a xylophone and maracas. A musical magic of sorts takes place as children are given instruction set to music or are offered the chance to play an instrument as they master childhood songs such as “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” or “In the Jungle,” while simultaneously completing specific goal-oriented tasks. “Each child we see is given an initial assessment and experiences a musical session,” said Blue, who opened Music Therapy Connections
in 2008. “They are fully evaluated and a plan is designed to meet their individual needs. What we do as musical therapists is data-driven, and has been proven scientifically to be extremely effective. We see children who never respond to a single verbal request, but they respond to music.”
WATCHING TRANSFORMATIONS HAPPEN Even though the concept of musical therapy dates back to 1500 B.C., according to the American Music Therapy Association, its value in modern times did not gain standing in the United States until after World War II when it was used – with great success – in VA hospitals for psychological and physical healing. It was not until the 1990s that it began to be used extensively
for children with autism, intellectual disabilities, developmental issues, Down syndrome, ADHD and emotional issues including anxiety and depression. “Although music exists in all cultures, science is just catching up with what we have seen all along,” Blue said. “We see daily what a difference music therapy makes for children. For example, we had one autistic young boy who would not talk, but he would sing. In school, he would not say the pledge of allegiance. So, we started singing it to him. Then he started singing with us, and eventually, he began saying the words; the transformation was amazing.” Blue said – unlike spoken words – music has the ability to affect and stimulate all parts of the brain simultaneously. Music is processed in both hemispheres and taps into
places in your brain that words are unable to reach. “You can’t ignore music, your brain won’t let you,” she said. “We had a young boy in our practice who would fall on the floor and wouldn’t follow any instructions, at home or in therapy sessions. There were no words that made a difference; he was tuning us out. INDIVIDUALIZED CARE At Therapy Connections, children are seen optimally once or twice weekly with sessions lasting from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on age and individual
therapy goals. Typically, therapy plans are implemented for six months to two years. For kids with special needs, therapy is often ongoing, with an emphasis on mastering and sustaining objectives and a mindset of keeping sessions interesting and engaging. “We like to change things up and allow kids to make choices when they come, especially kids with disabilities,” said Therapy Connections therapist Frank Castillo. “They often don’t have a lot of say about most things happening in their lives, so we try to give them a little more autonomy. If they are able to request a song or an instrument, and it fits with the skill we are working on, we let them choose.” Most kids' instrument of choice, according to therapist Kay Derostyne, who joined the Therapy Connections team in 2021, is unequivocally the keyboard. “They immediately gravitate to it,” she said. “Once they realize they can change the sounds the keyboard makes, it becomes a whole new world. Even kids who are profoundly visually impaired can learn to play the keyboard. We place their hands on the keys and tell them whether the key under a specific finger is an A, C or an F. They keep their fingers on the keys, and every time we say that letter, they press that key. Seeing the smiles on their faces once they realize they are actually playing a favorite song … there’s nothing like it.” Currently, Blue and her team offer services for children 15 months through high school, via the Driscoll Health Plan, the Rise School, Youth Empowerment Services for at-risk kids and enrichment programs at Ingleside ISD and the School of Science and Technology. As for the future sounds of music at Therapy Connections, Blue is set on expanding therapy services in the hopes of serving a larger portion of the population – something that would certainly be music to the ears of children and families throughout the Coastal Bend.

t's a scrapbook of our lives," said Glenda Worthley, as she discussed the components of her beautiful home nestled among a mature treeline and landscaping of an older, distinguished neighborhood. A pastiche of eccentric art pieces, tasteful furniture and well-executed renovations, this remarkable home has been a labor of love, as the owners took a leap of faith by moving in during the construction process. The result is a home infused with warmth and comfort, where friends and family can feel right at home. Where the grace of mid-century modern architecture intertwines with the stories of generations past, this home has classic notes of the 1950s. Intricate brickwork fills the entrance, the sun shading provided by this construction allows shadows to grace the front door as guests take a respite from the all-too-familiar Texas sun.
Exposed brick in the great room not only indicates the detail in construction but also provides a layer of texture and materiality that brings the room together. An ancestral table, a cherished heirloom from George Wothley's mother, is a focal point of the dining room. Passed down through generations, the 140-yearold table is a testament to the enduring importance of family and shared moments. This table has witnessed countless gatherings where friends and family come together to share and create memories. rowing microgreens is a quick and easy way to add nutrient-rich ingredients to your diet year-round. Often confused with sprouts, microgreens are vegetables and herbs grown from seed and harvested by cutting at the bottom of the stem at the seedling stage. Sprouts are not grown in soil, like microgreens, and they are consumed by eating the entire plant, including the root. Another way to differentiate microgreens from sprouts is the leaves that emerge, which are edible, like baby greens. The leaves come in a variety of shapes and colors, which make garnishing a dish with microgreens pleasing to the eye. These young vegetable greens are aromatic and full of flavor. Some common microgreens include cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, sunflower, lettuce, carrot, onion, beet and chives. Not as common, but still enjoyed as microgreens, are wheat, oats, rice and beans. The flavors are strong and vary from mild to bitter and some can even be spicy. The convenience of growing your own microgreens is appealing, whether you are a seasoned gardener or just wish to have fresh ingredients on hand to enhance a dish. Gardeners can use microgreens in many ways: They can be added to top a salad, pasta, pizza or included in a sandwich, wrap or soup. You can also blend them to make juice or a smoothie. For those with children or grandchildren in the home, growing microgreens is a fun way to educate them on how to sustainably grow nutritious food.

At-home growing kits are available online from a variety of retailers. The kits often include a planting container of some kind, soil and seeds. You can also grow microgreens in a windowsill planter that gets plenty of sun or a greenhouse space. Keep them watered with a spray bottle, and be sure to mist the plants lightly at least every other day. You’ll want to keep the soil moist but not wet to avoid mold issues.
From the time you plant until harvest typically takes anywhere from one to three weeks after germination. They’re ready to eat once they’ve reached a height of around 2-3 inches tall. Multiple harvests are possible with microgreens. You might get up to three harvests depending on the variety, but the flavor will likely change. It’s important to wash your seed tray thoroughly before beginning a new round of seeds to prevent mold.
Despite their size, microgreens offer a variety of highly concentrated nutrients. Research has found that the nutrient levels are as dense or nearly double that of a mature plant with high levels of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, depending on which plant species was measured.

Gingerbread Tea Biscuits Makes 2-3 dozen PREP TIME: 15 minutes COOK TIME: 15-20 minutes, per batch INGREDIENTS:
2 cups whole wheat flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon ginger 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 stick (1/2 cup) salted butter, softened 1/4 cup milk DIRECTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Pulse dry ingredients in a blender or food processor for 30 seconds to mix. Add remaining ingredients and pulse another 30-45 seconds until a wet dough forms. Line your work surface with parchment paper and sprinkle with flour. Transfer the dough to the floured surface and form into a disk. Cover the dough with another sheet of parchment and roll it out to 1/8-inch thickness. Use a 2 1/2 inch biscuit cutter to cut round shapes into the dough. Remove the excess dough, form into a disk and roll it out once more to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut out more round cookies, repeating the process until all the dough has been used. Transfer parchment with prepared cookies to your baking sheet. Prick the biscuits with the tines of a fork to ensure no bubbling during the baking process. Bake biscuits for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

ust above the gift shop at Harrison’s Landing and up a discrete set of stairs waits the new premier cocktail experience in the Coastal Bend at The Mariner. A concept born between Harrison’s Landing owner Hank Harrison and executed by bar operator and veteran of the Texas drink scene Jacob McClain, The Mariner offers a blended experience of upscale drinking, sleek wooden interiors and an eclectic selection of fixtures paying tasteful homage to nautical culture. McClain traces his roots in the Texas food and drink scene to The Davenport, a Monstrose gem owned and operated by his uncle in the late 1990s. From Houston to Seattle and now the Coastal Bend, McClain has earned a reputation as a master in the art of crafting cocktails and curating menus, even playing a pivotal role as the original mixologist behind menus at local favorites The Post and The Goldfish. At the heart of The Mariner is the menu, which McClain built with his staff, including executive chef Eric Morin, executive sous and pastry chef Cody Fitzpatrick and lead bar manager Devin Hoeling, among others. In the mid-shift before an evening rush, the flow of communication between the front and back of the house is constant, whether it's stopping to consult about microgreens, fresh catches of the day or preparing to cut down and process 50 pounds of fresh tuna. “We cast a wide net, with the vibe of being on the water,” McClain said of the menu, which features a diversity of Mediterranean-inspired tapas like their well-loved lamb lollies, chicken croquettes and ceviche. “It’s all tapas because we’re a bar first. Our plates have bold colors and bright flavors made with beautiful ingredients.” The Mariner utilizes a seasonal bar menu with twists on classics and new creations mixed in-house, in the interest of keeping things fresh. 64 The Bend

“You don’t see an Old Fashioned on the menu, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make it,” he said. “We lean towards modern classics. We’ll call it a ‘whiskey improved’ cocktail — where we’re not hiding the spirit, we’re elevating it.” Some such cocktails currently on The Mariner’s menu are their Scout’s Honor and Long Shoreman, two bourbonbased favorites with citrus notes. “This is a collaborative menu,” McClain said. “It’s been fun to see the cocktail progression and where the staff has taken things. We’re constantly innovating. If you’re consistently inspired to create, you gotta change it up and write it down.” The Mariner will see its hard launch at the start of 2024, but until then, McClain and his staff continue to innovate and tweak a menu that offers persistent promise to bar goers in the Coastal Bend. “When you put love in, you get love out,” he said. hristian and Ashley Bernard, the power couple behind the local favorite brunch and dessert spot Sugarbakers, have done it again. The Bernards recently transformed the space adjacent to Sugarbakers in the Del Mar neighborhood into their newest concept, Fork & Vines. The restaurant celebrates the couples’ appreciation for fine wine and elegant bites. “Over the past 10 years, Ashley and I have developed a love and appreciation of wine,” Christian said. The duo expanded their knowledge by visiting vineyards and wine bars around the world. Returning home from an impressionable trip to Croatia, it was with this fervor that the Bernards jumped at the opportunity to create their own take. The restaurant has a European aesthetic, with sapphire-hued velvet loungers contrasting striking white quartz tables. The L-shaped bar spans the length of the main dining room, leading guests to a second eating area. Warm tones and vining greens help ground the brick accent wall and lend the room a homey, intimate feel. The bar and dinner menu mimics the global vibe. A
s a medium, film has the unique capacity for conjuring stories and etching them into our minds in a way that becomes like our own lived experience. For Gabriel Duran, a working filmmaker and university film professor, the key to expanding cultural enrichment lies in the ability to tap into this accessibility and offer audiences new viewing experiences, memories and stories in the expansive world of film. Festival de Cine Latino Americano (FDCLA) found its roots whilst Duran was still living and working in the Dallas metropolitan area, contributing his work as a filmmaker and educator to his hometown community. “We opened up in Fort Worth at a place called the Grand Plaza,” Duran said, describing their first festival venue as a three-story Latino mall. “The kind of place where girls go to buy quinceañera dresses.” What began as an idea of a projector with 20 seats in a makeshift screening room grew into a four-day festival after a tireless promotional campaign across radio shows in Dallas. Since moving to Coastal Bend four years ago to begin work as a film professor at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Duran sought to share this blended love of film and Latino culture with a community he felt could intimately appreciate it. Corpus Christi, with its history, traditions and residents invested in the spectrum of Latino cultures, is the ideal backdrop for an event of this quality, Duran said. 70 The Bend

“One thing about Corpus is that when you put on an event, people support it,” he shared. “Whether it’s a small business or an event, people show up and support, which is amazing.” The festival will explore Latina filmmakers, Texas filmmakers and documentarians, international narrative film, international documentary film and more. Similar to the desire to show a multitude of genres and styles of filmmaking, Duran and the FDCLA committee seek to highlight the diversity of Latino cultures and experiences, featuring filmmakers of all backgrounds from North, Central, South America and the Caribbean. “I wanted us to have a space to showcase our work,” Duran said. “A way to break racism and stereotypes is to showcase voices, like Latino voices, openly through artwork and on screen.” Duran said his love of film began as a bonding opportunity with his father, watching anything from old westerns to Gone with the Wind to Nacho Libre. From these memories, Duran forged a path into film, and he wants to create opportunities for the next generation of film watchers and filmmakers to have their own memories and epiphanies. “This festival is very communitybased,” he said of the free event. “I want all the tíos and all the tías to get out of the house for this one; bring the kids! It’s important to see somebody who looks like you on screen. I hope to give that and have an open discussion with the community.” The festival is scheduled for May 2024 at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Performing Arts Center. A
n entrepreneurial duo is rewriting the script for classic car dealerships. Jaron Jackson and Jasmin Escutia, the minds behind Finders Keepers Classics, are building a community fueled by their passion for classic cars. Jackson's journey into the world of classic cars started with a 1975 Chevrolet Caprice classic convertible. Little did he know, this purchase would be the spark plug that ignited a new career path. When Jackson shared the Caprice on social media, a follower made him an offer he couldn't refuse, turning his passion into a profitable venture. “When we closed the deal, I quit my job the next day,” he said. “I realized I could spend my time sourcing classics and making more money. We turned it into a business from there on out. Now we are here, looking forward to being in business forever.” He saw the potential to make a living doing what he loved most, and with an unwavering belief in himself, he took that leap of faith and opened the dealership in 2021. Every great journey has its compass, and for Finders Keepers Classics, that guiding light is Jackson’s fiance and business partner, Jasmin Escutia. With a background in nursing and a master's degree in business, Escutia brings a unique blend of compassion and strategic thinking to the business. Her background in business administration and her commitment to stability made her the perfect counterpart to Jackson's passion. Escutia’s family history is steeped in entrepreneurship, giving her a profound understanding of the business world. “My family immigrated from Mexico,” she said, “and they had to find different ways to make ends meet. My father owned several businesses, many of which failed terribly. My sisters and I acted as his employees, so we got to experience running a business at a very young age.” 72 The Bend

They're not just about cars; they're about crafting a tailored experience for each client. In pursuit of cultivating their community, Finders Keepers is also looking to participate in more festivals and events to create a fun environment for car enthusiasts and novices. “We also believe Corpus Christi does not have enough going on for the car community,” Jackson said. “Especially classic vehicles. Shopping Central JCPENNEY HAS HAD LOCATIONS ACROSS THE CITY AFTER STARTING DOWNTOWN

Before SPID and the expansion of shopping to the southside, downtown Corpus Christi was where residents could find anything from furniture and hats to cameras and the fine wares of multiple department stores. The local JCPenney’s was one of the longest-lasting of the department stores downtown. The location pictured is now a parking lot across from BUS at N. Chaparral and Starr streets. Throughout history, the local JCPenney always went where the shoppers were. Initially, its home was this brick building built by Hugh Sutherland in the early 1920s. Penney moved into the leased building in December 1925, in time for the holiday shopping season. The windows provided display space for elaborate settings of merchandise to draw in the many shoppers. stores were often open six days a week and as late as 9 p.m., with brightly lit signs to draw in shoppers. After its success in this two-story building, JCPenney moved down the street to Chaparral and William streets (now Lomax), where it operated from 1949 to 1978. That building is standing today, and TAMU-CC owns it. The pictured location became Levine’s and was demolished in 1987. As shoppers moved south, so did JCPenney. It operated an anchor location at the new Parkdale Shopping Center at Staples Road and Gollihar Street in 1957, then it moved into Padre Staples Mall upon its opening in 1970. While not the same local draw as Lichtenstein’s and others, Penney’s has been a constant in Corpus Christi shopping for nearly a century.
