If you speak to a Bend staff member about the great endeavor that is The Local’s List, you’ll learn just how much work goes into putting together our annual readers’ choice poll. A lot goes on behind the scenes to get us to the day this issue finally gets into the hands of readers.
From beginning to end, six months of work goes into producing the coveted July issue. Though it’s a beast of a project, its magnitude and importance to the Coastal Bend community are not lost on us. I couldn’t begin to count the conversations I’ve had with past Local’s List winners who share how their category win aided in changing the trajectory of their business, gave them the confidence to continue their pursuit or made them feel that all their hard work was worth it.
I don’t share these anecdotes to blow our own trumpet, but to remind us that giving someone their flowers while they can still smell them is an invaluable act of gratitude. Showing appreciation to those who give us so much — in the specific case of The Local’s List
winners, they give our community plenty of reasons to love where we live — provides a meaningful reminder of hard work being worth it in the end.
Behind every Local’s List winner, you’ll find a dreamer. You’ll find sacrifice, grit, passion, ambition. And because each of these dreamers decided to take a chance and put themselves out there, the Coastal Bend is a better place. For that fact alone, an immeasurable number of flowers are owed. On behalf of the entire team here at The Bend, I’d like to genuinely congratulate each business that won its respective category, made it into the top five voting round or was even nominated in the first place.
Now in its eighth year, The Local’s List rounded out at 173 categories, 164,709 votes and 21,801 participants. That’s a drastic change from its inaugural year back in 2016, when the poll consisted of just 37 categories, 16,000 votes and 1,300 participants.
Although the numbers have continued to grow over the years, I find immense joy in the fact that the purpose behind The Local’s List has remained the same. It will always serve as a reminder of the people in this community who pour themselves into making the Coastal Bend a dynamic and exciting place to live, work and play. It’s a reminder of why The Bend exists in the first place: to give the local dreamers and doers their beyond-deserved flowers.
Lastly, I am thrilled to announce the much-anticipated return of The Local’s List Party. After a three-year hiatus, our team is bringing the celebration back with a bang at Whataburger Field. Mark your calendars for July 27, 2023. I promise, you won’t want to miss this.
Without further ado, the readers have spoken, the votes have been counted and The Local’s List 2023 winners are …
I’ve admired Armon Alex from afar for quite some time. When you hear of local climate-related advocacy and action, you often hear his name. In learning he is only 23 years old, I became even more in awe of his work and passion. Pg. 16
THE PEARL OF SUNSET ISLAND
As a Corpus Christi native, I’ve always had a fondness for Snoopy’s. It’s been exciting to watch the business and Marker 37 evolve over the years and its newest addition, Snoopy’s Pearl Oyster Bar, is no exception. You’ll want to add this to your list of new restaurants to try. Pg. 112
A SUMMER TOUR OF LOCAL ART
It’s no secret I am a major supporter of the arts, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about the exhibition lineup our local galleries have this summer. As a huge Will Barnet fan, I am particularly excited to visit K Space Contemporary this month and view many of his pieces in person. Pg. 116

IN CONVERSATION W/
THE COMMUNITY AND CLIMATE ADVOCATE DISCUSSES CONSERVATION PROGRESS, HIS WORK WITH THE MAYOR’S ENVIRONMENTAL TASK FORCE AND MORE
BY: KYLIE COOPER PHOTO BY: SHOOCHA PHOTOGRAPHYKC: From acting as the Director of Youth Engagement for the Gulf Reach Institute to being one of the youngest members of the Board of Directors for EarthEcho International, you've worked with a number of environmental groups. How has your vast experience shaped your advocacy and leadership work?
AA: In many leadership roles I’ve held, I’ve often been the youngest member in the room. My generation brings another perspective to these decision-making tables. My extensive experience with environmental nonprofits, leading and supporting conservation campaigns and collaborating with government entities has deeply influenced my perspective on addressing the climate crisis and the power of collective action.
This work has highlighted the significance of grassroots movements, community engagement and the potential for local partnerships to effect change. Collaborating with government entities has taught me the complexities of policymaking and the need for engagement both within and outside the system. These experiences have shaped my understanding that addressing the climate crisis necessitates a multifaceted approach. It requires mobilizing communities, conducting strategic campaigns and collaborating with stakeholders to drive systemic change. By leveraging collective action, we can amplify our impact and create a more sustainable and resilient future.
KC: As the vice-chair of the Mayor's Environmental Task Force, what do your responsibilities look like.
AA: For clarity, the Mayor’s Environmental Task Force is an ad hoc task force. It was designed to advise the Mayor’s office regarding green initiatives and ways to be proactive. The committee makes recommendations to promote safe, healthy, socio-economic and environmentally sustainable projects and programs. To date, we’ve pushed initiatives through the Mayor’s office around recycling, composting and one of my personal favorites, the recent CommuniTree-CC Initiative that plans to
plant at least 400 trees in the next five years around Corpus Christi. In April, we launched this initiative through the support of council members Jim Klein and Sylvia Campos. Mayor Paulette Guajardo played a critical role in organizing our sponsors and leading the effort.
KC: In 2021, you co-founded the first Gulf of Mexico Youth Climate Summit. What sparked this idea and what do you believe to be its importance?
AA: The creation of the Gulf of Mexico Youth Climate Summit (GOMYCS) was sparked by personal experiences in my coastal community, witnessing environmental injustices and recognizing the need for youth empowerment. Growing up in South Texas, I saw the biodiversity and vibrant communities of the Gulf of Mexico, but also the disparities affecting marginalized groups. My colleague Maggie Peacock and I realized the lack of youth representation in traditional coalition spaces in the Gulf, prompting the idea for GOMYCS.
Our organization brings together young leaders to address intersectional environmental issues. By collaborating with other scientists, experts and policymakers, we bridge generations, fostering dialogue and effective solutions. GOMYCS empowers marginalized communities and amplifies youth voices in decisionmaking processes. It serves as a platform for advocacy, education and policy discussions, enabling young activists to drive positive change.
KC: What environmental-related accomplishment you’ve been part of achieving for the city are you most proud of?
AA: Our coastal city still has a long way to go. Through my work in national and international collaborations to address the world’s most pressing issues, my hope is to bring those efforts and knowledge back home. It’s my personal belief that there needs to be a
combination of systemic, individual and corporate change in order for us all to reach a sustainable future. I’m honored to have been a contributor to some of the recycling and composting work led by the city, but I know this is just a start. Our tree initiative is just a start. We need to work on bold initiatives like emission reduction, creating more green spaces, educating the public on natural resources issues and embracing clean energy as a city operation.
KC: How can people take climaterelated action if they don't know where to start?
AA: First, educating oneself about climate change and its impacts is essential. This can be done through peer-reviewed scientific research, reading reliable sources and staying informed. Connecting with clean-funded environmental organizations provides guidance and support. Engaging with corporations and the fossil fuel industry is crucial; individuals can support sustainable businesses and encourage clean energy strategies.
They can also advocate for change by attending local government meetings, participating in shareholder workshops and urging companies to prioritize environmental commitments. Additionally, taking personal actions like reducing energy consumption, supporting renewable energy and practicing sustainable habits are impactful. By combining education, organizational engagement, corporate accountability, policy advocacy and personal actions, we can all make a meaningful contribution to combat the climate crisis and build a future in which we all are safe and healthy.

- REGENIA HARRISON-MOORE (VIA FACEBOOK)Founded in 2000 by Tony Reyes, Mission 911 began as a men's homeless shelter and has since grown to become a beacon of hope for many vulnerable individuals and families in our community. With a recent rebrand and launch of new initiatives, it’s become much more than just a shelter for the unhoused. The organization continues to bridge the gap between poverty and stability.
Lauren Cargill, Chief Financial Officer of Mission 911, has worked tirelessly alongside Reyes to rebrand the organization and launch new initiatives to better serve the community — such as the Peace of Mind Case Management Program, which provides access to various solutions to help individuals progress toward their ultimate goal of self-sufficiency. Mission 911 offers many benefits, including case workers, a clothing closet, "Getting Ahead" classes, utility assistance and more.
Along with the new initiatives comes an enhanced brand identity, launched in April, which is crucial to the success of this program. It communicates the vision and mission to the community they serve, inviting all who need assistance or want to get involved to join them in their journey. The brand’s reimagined identity revolves around the crucial work it does for individuals in our community, as it “exists to care for individuals living in poverty in our community by connecting them with key resources to facilitate their journey toward a life of stability.” The vision is to “build connection, break the cycle of poverty and empower and create a sustainable community.”
As the CEO of Mission 911, Reyes' dedication to the organization is palpable. His unwavering commitment to help those in need has been the
driving force behind its successes. "This takes a lot of passion and understanding,” he said. “One cannot assume someone's situation. From there, you have to work on where they want to go, filling the gap between where they are and where they need to be.”
Mission 911's approach is rooted in compassion and love for one's neighbor. It reflects the community it serves and values empathy, justice and human dignity above all. As Mission 911 embarks on this new journey, its personnel invite everyone to join them in creating a more just and compassionate society. Ultimately, it is not just about providing support and services to those in need, but empowering people to find their way toward lives of self-sufficiency and fulfillment.

The Bayside Pilates owner shares her tips for incorporating a positive self-care routine you can actually stick with
By working in the fitness industry, I have seen many health and wellness fads come and go, but the current culture seems to have a stronger focus on daily habits that inspire longevity. Eating well, moving your body, drinking enough water, getting outside and adequate sleep are what beauty and self-care mean to me. I always tell people it doesn’t matter what type of exercise routine you’re doing; if you enjoy it, you’re way more likely to stick to it!
Good ingredients and nutrient-dense foods are what I reach for most. I eat a ton of berries on a regular basis — which are not only delicious but are also full of antioxidants that are great for your skin. When it comes to my overall diet, flexibility and balance are my top priorities.
Aside from a wholesome diet, exercise is a very important part of my life. My routine consists of Pilates three to four times per week to target my muscles. I also love any physical activity that involves being outside. Most people don’t realize the importance of getting adequate sunshine. A healthy level of Vitamin D is vital for physical and mental well-being.
When practicing my self-care, I notice a considerable difference in my skin. I believe exercise, nutrient-dense foods and good sleep largely contribute to a good complexion. Skincare rule number one: I always end my day with a clean face, whether I do a full skincare routine or not. I don’t typically wear much makeup — cream bronzer and blush, some lip gloss and brow gel are my must-haves — but when shopping for skincare, I always stick to brands with clean ingredients.
The key to a consistent routine is finding the foods that make your body feel good, the exercise you enjoy doing and beauty and hair products that complement the unique features you already embody.

Who doesn't love finding a killer deal? Tack on the act of supporting a local business and you've got yourself a no-brainer. Here are few gifts we love under $25.
BY: JARRED SCHUETZEWith more and more people seeing results from botox, we sent two members of our team to experience a less invasive alternative with these “faux-tox” treatments from local skin care professionals.
I've said it once and I'll say it again: Best. Tables. Ever. The massage/facial tables at Peace of Mind Massage Therapy & Natural Healing are incredibly soft, and the vibration setting is a game-changer.
I went to Peace of Mind for the Facial Cupping Face Lift Treatment, which is an all-natural alternative to surgical facelifts, fillers and chemical treatments used for preserving youthfulness. The facial began as most do: aromatic mists to open pores, an initial cleanse and into extractions and detoxing. Using a microcurrent tool, owner Jynelle Ornelas-Stanton, LMT began to remove and eliminate the bacteria hiding deep withing the skin. While this tool can be painful to some, I merely experienced a slight pressure. Once the detoxing was complete, the cupping process began.
Ornelas proceeded with three rounds of cupping with progressively more suction/intensity. The suction lifts, tones and plumps the facial muscles. Its deep invigorating action increases elastin and collagen, which reverse gravity’s effects on your face. This process also gives your face full lymphatic drainage and increases circulation, resulting in a clearer, cleaner and a more even complexion. Post-facial, I left with glowing skin and no redness, irritation or sensitivity — it's truly the perfect lunchtime face-lift facial. The next day my face felt noticeably tighter, and very clean, which is what I'm looking for from choosing an alternative to botox or fillers. 10/10; would recommend giving this treatment a try.
While the facial is recommended for people wanting a natural approach to skin health as opposed to fillers and botox, it also is highly beneficial for those who struggle with acne, as the cupping process draws and pulls toxins and bacteria that cause acne from deep within the skin … without being as invasive or abrasive as other acne treatments.
The professionals at Gold Dust Cosmetic Collective are second to none. The pleasant atmosphere and knowledgeable staff set the foundation for an experience that is tailored to you.
I visited licensed esthetician Jenna Pilsner for “The Face Lift” treatment, consisting of a collagen promoting peptide mask, glycolic acid exfoliation, hyaluronic acid moisturization and regenerative high frequency technology, to give the skin a natural lift. Before the treatment started, we had a lengthy consultation in which it was evident she had the knowledge required to address my unique skin concerns.
After a series of cleanses and a facial massage to promote lymphatic drainage, the NuFace device delivered microcurrent in the same lymphatic path to stimulate the facial muscles. I could feel a slight tingling from the current, but nothing painful or uncomfortable. Then, an exfoliant was applied, followed by steam before the peptide mask was activated.
I could feel the mask slowly tightening over the course of about 10 minutes, while Pilsner continued to walk me through the science behind its ingredients, specifically Argireline, the botox-like peptide that aids in collagen production. She also massaged my neck and shoulders, which was a significant bonus and contributed to the overall superior experience that Gold Dust delivers. She finished the treatment with dermaplaning to remove any lingering dead skin and vellus hair and then applied a series of serums.
Over the course of the next several days, I noticed a decrease in fine lines, specifically on my forehead and around my eyes, and a significantly brighter complexion. Thanks to Pilsner, I left the experience not only with immediate results, but a renewed motivation to put the time and effort into skin care that will promote the cell regeneration the treatment initially provided.

The region of western Florida that contains the cities of Tampa and St. Petersburg is nicknamed the Sun Coast for good reason: It clocks the most days of sunshine per year in the Sunshine State. Despite the omnipresence of vitamin D, though, and the fact that Tampa is the third most populous city in Florida, this sun-soaked oasis is still relatively underrated when compared to more well-trodden travel destinations in the state like South Beach, Orlando and the Keys. But in addition to a particularly bucolic beachfront in St. Pete, this Gulf Coast locale is an epicenter of culture, cuisine, wildlife, historic architecture and all-around fun.
Rising like a pastel-hued beacon over St. Pete Beach, The Don CeSar celebrated its 95th anniversary at the beginning of 2023, following a 2021 aesthetic renovation across its 227 guest rooms and suites, as well as its six restaurants, shops, two pools, sprawling spa and two-story penthouse. Managed by Davidson Resorts, the aptly palatial abode is so legendary that it’s hosted the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and in 1989 it joined the National Trust’s elite Historic Hotels of America roster. For something more metropolitan, hole up at Midtown Tampa, a new urban development in the heart of Tampa. The sleek 20-acre complex is anchored by a smattering of restaurants, shops, outdoor entertainment and boutique hotels. While The Don CeSar reigns as a classic, Element Tampa Midtown is a hip newcomer that puts guests in the heart of an
exciting new neighborhood while still being mere minutes from downtown attractions.
The hotel has more of a residential vibe designed to make guests feel like locals, with spacious and well-appointed rooms and suites, a rooftop pool and restaurant, 24-hour fitness center and living room-like common areas equipped with kitchens and couches. Most uniquely, the Element brand partnered with sustainably minded Lettuce Grow to enhance its food with fresh herbs and greens, using recipes provided by equally sustainably minded and Michelin-starred chef Sammy Monsour.
In Tampa, start with a scenic stroll along the 2.5-mile Riverwalk, a paved pathway that runs along the Hillsborough River and links restaurants, businesses, outdoor art and museums en route. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for
Tampa’s most famed aquatic residents: manatees. Even if you don’t see any in the river, just pay a visit to ZooTampa. Located in pastoral Lowry Park, the zoo is not only home to underwater viewing areas but also a nonprofit rehabilitation center for injured manatees.
Elsewhere, Tampa offers opportunities for old tradition and new innovations. For the former, historic Ybor City boasts an iconic thoroughfare of Cuban cigar shops and restaurants along 7th Avenue, along with the Ybor City Museum. On the newer side of things, Sparkman Wharf is a veritable waterfront playground teeming with events, bars, a beer garden, shops, a bowling alley and restaurants.
In St. Pete, the star attraction is St. Pete Beach, famed for its sugary white sands, crystal-clear waters and miles of prime seashore. While there are numerous sections and access points, particularly popular spots include Upham Beach Park for family fun or Jimmy B’s Beach Bar for tropical cocktails, daily live entertainment and seafood snacks.
On the opposite side of the barrier island, jutting out into Tampa Bay like a boardwalk behemoth, the St. Pete Pier is a mecca for skyline views (especially stunning at sunset), dining, drinking and entertainment, including outdoor
art installations and concerts sprawled across 26 manicured acres of lawn. For the little ones, the Discovery Center and Wet Classroom is an opportunity to learn hands-on about local aquatic life.
For a different kind of gallery experience, swing by The Dalí Museum, mere blocks from the pier. A slice of Surrealism in the heart of St. Pete, the enthralling museum houses myriad works created and inspired by the distinguished Spanish artist, including one painting of his famed melting clocks.
Beyond piña colada-slinging staples like Jimmy B’s Beach Bar and Undertow Beach Bar, there’s a wealth of flavors worth exploring in this low-key foodie mecca.
In St. Pete, casual beach bars are contrasted by high-end hot spots such as Allelo, a gorgeously designed Aegean restaurant piling plates with salsa-clad branzino, eggplant with citrus yogurt, snapper crudo and octopus with romesco and chicharrón.
The cocktails at Allelo, as well as at other restaurants like Maritana at The Don CeSar, are top-tier, but the St. Pete brewery scene is booming in its own right.
Case in point: the effortless coolness of Green Bench Brewing Company, a downtown watering hole that crafts a unique portfolio of beers, ciders and even mead, pouring it all out in an industrialchic taproom with a tropical patio.
In Tampa, the city continues to prove the enduring synergy of the old and the new. It’s the kind of hungry food town where historic fixtures are just as revered as the buzzy newcomers. For instance, Gaspar’s Grotto is an Ybor City icon that does kitsch with class. Flanked by cigar shops and mojito bars, with wild roosters roving the spacious patio, the pirate-themed bar and restaurant is a fun fixture for Cuban sandwiches, shrimpfilled quesadillas and medallion-shaped chicken doubloons.
Meanwhile, The Pearl is a newly minted modern tavern in downtown Tampa’s Water Street district, shining bright with oysters and seafood dishes from executive chef Olivia Giesler. A modern tavern, the restaurant is convivial and polished, offering a crowd-pleasing spread of smoked whitefish, jalapeño corn spoon bread, clam chowder, Thai curry mussels, fish and chips and much more.

15334 CARTAGENA CT., CORPUS CHRISTI, TX 78418-6917 OFFERED AT $655,000
When Eric and Erikka Youngstrom of Austin decided to build a beach home in Port Aransas, Erikka — a former fashion designer — couldn’t be more excited to create a space that both her family and vacationers would appreciate. “I wanted to design a place where everyone has a chance to connect to the outdoors and each other,” she said.
Erikka also had a clear design vision for her home: “I wanted the house to reflect both masculine and feminine. It is boho chic and cowboy noir. Both styles are very natural and use a lot of the same tones,” she said. This balance of masculine and feminine is clear throughout the home.
The light and airy great room, with its vaulted ceilings, bright white walls and delicate light fixtures, feels soft and feminine. The unique paneled walls, designed thoughtfully by Erikka, add texture and give the space a bohemian feel. The great room includes both lounge seating and a dining area, which flows into the open kitchen.
The kitchen features the most prominent color throughout the home: green. “When I was young, my mother used to say to me, ‘Always design with green. It’s God’s color.’ I realized when I was older that green really is the perfect design color,” Erikka said. The emerald tone used throughout the home is the inspiration for the home’s name: “Emerald Engagement.”
The color green and its connection to nature were important to Erikka when designing the home. “I really wanted to bring the outdoors in. That was the foundation of the house.” Its connection to nature is evident in natural details like the rustic wood cabinets in the primary bathroom, Capiz shell and rattan chandeliers and the kitchen counter stools with barn wood seats that bring the outdoors in.
The primary suite is a striking contrast to the light and feminine great room. Its dark quartz countertops, charcoal metallic shower tile and black fixtures fit right in with the cowboy noir aesthetic. “The masculine side of design is lost a lot of the time. I wanted to present a more masculine space. The primary bath is much heavier and sleeker,” Erikka said.
Another focus of design is the history of Texas. “With so many new people in Texas that might be staying at the house, I wanted to pay homage to Texas

history,” she said. The rare photo of James Dean from the 1956 film Giant, which is displayed in the primary bedroom, is the perfect conversation starter. “That movie was filmed in Marfa and really put Marfa on the map. It’s the story of Texas — windfalls and dry spells. I’ve always loved that photo. It’s iconic.”
The green and ivory Marfa toile wallpaper featured in the powder bath and designed by Katie Kime is another homage to Texas, as are other nods like cowboy hats, an equestrian statue and cowhide rugs.
This combination of boho chic and cowboy noir reigns throughout the space and results in a fresh, fun and unexpected design. However, the home's most important aspect, according to Erikka, is the connections it makes. “I really wanted this home to be an easy place to sink into and leave the world behind,” she said. “My favorite memory is the first time my whole family came home from the beach. Everyone was sandy, salty and sun-kissed. We built the house for two years, and finally getting to see everyone in the space was the best memory.”
The primary bedroom features one of Youngstrom’s most prized possessions – a framed still of James Dean from the 1956 film GiantIf the colors of a sunset could be replicated in a flower, the result would be the Pride of Barbados. Also known as the Peacock Flower and Mexican Bird of Paradise, Pride of Barbados’ Latin name, Caesalpinia pulcherrima, means “most beautiful” and is certainly an accurate description.
This heat-loving shrub makes a statement in any Coastal Bend landscape. A member of the Fabaceae (pea) family, this fern-like bush typically blooms in summertime. The red, orange and yellow flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden, which adds to the spectacular show of colors.
A distinct characteristic is the long, red stamen extending beyond the length of the petals. The pistil of the plant projects upward creating a stairway of seed pods, and the symmetry of the flowers is pleasing to the eye.
When planted en masse, this deciduous shrub makes an excellent screen or a mixed barrier. Pride of Barbados loves the heat and can tolerate the cold. The Coastal Bend is in Zone 9 of the USDA Plant Hardiness Map, meaning Pride of Barbados may freeze to the ground during winter, but will grow back from the roots in the spring.
Dwarf varieties are also available, and they put on the same stunning show during the summer months as larger varieties. The Pride of Barbados has earned its designation by the Texas AgriLife Research program as a Texas Superstar Plant.
Pride of Barbados can be easily grown in the Coastal Bend. It's a low-maintenance shrub that prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Spacing and height, 5’ to 8.’ This hardy shrub does not mind even the hottest summer days in the Coastal Bend. Water regularly until established, then no supplemental water should be needed. Grows quickly in alkaline or acidic soils. No insects or diseases are a serious threat.
When planting Pride of Barbados, dig the hole twice as wide as the plant and as deep as the root ball. Choose a spot that receives full sun for the best blooms. Even a mild winter in the Coastal Bend can keep Pride of Barbados from being evergreen. Prune in late winter. This shrub makes a quick comeback in spring, so give it some space to bush out for a striking summer show.
This flower represented Barbados, one of the 56 nations of the British Commonwealth, on the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle’s wedding veil. The Pride of Barbados flower can also be found on the Barbados coat of arms. The independent island nation has embraced this beautiful plant, which is believed to be native to the West Indies or tropical Americas, and of which its people are rightfully very proud.
INSPIRATION FOR A FOURTH OF JULY GATHERING
BY: TERRIE MOORE PHOTOS BY: RACHEL BENAVIDESIt’s officially summer and time for that Fourth of July party. This Independence Day, I’ll celebrate the diverse and beautiful melting pot America has become, starting with my table. Blue and white porcelain vases filled with Dutch tulips and Spanish red roses get the color scheme going. I chose gorgeous hand-painted plates and glassware, a nod to my Mexican heritage, in the same blue and white colorway. Thinking beyond stars and stripes, I laid down a paisley table runner and solid blue napkins. In decor and in spirit, I’ll be celebrating inclusivity this Fourth of July.

Pony Party
Double S Ranch was the perfect venue for this pony and popsicle inspired birthday party. Guests enjoyed
Customized cookies were a sweet addition to the dessert lineup. In addition to the popsicleshaped treat, guests enjoyed a popsicle bar with sprinkes, gummy bears and more.
When planning this special birthday party, vivid colors were chosen to capture the essence of summer. A marvelous ribbon rainbow and larger-than-life popsicles served as fun focal points; and an array of jewel-tone florals from Wild Veggie Bouquet added bright pops of color throughout.
Mark Twain said, “When one has tasted watermelon, he knows what the angels eat.” Most would agree. Watermelon has been called “summer’s blessing” and has long established itself as an essential nosh on hot July days. While the original wild watermelon is believed to have been bitter with much less flavor, it contained valuable fluid to sustain societies in dry, desert climates. Archaeologists unearthed traces of watermelon seeds at a 5,000-year-old settlement in Libya. Paintings of watermelons adorned King Tut’s crypt, dating cultivated varieties to at least 4,000 years ago. Ancient cultivars propagated varieties with a milder taste, and eventually bred out the acidity.
Watermelon is great for its refreshing sweetness, but also for its hydrating ability. The high water and antioxidant content of summer’s favorite fruit leave partakers quenched and satisfied. High in Vitamins A, C and B6 plus potassium, watermelon is a nutrient powerhouse. As an added bonus, it’s low in calories.
We combined watermelon with other summer all-stars like vine-ripened tomatoes, sweet and spicy peppers and heat-loving herbs to create invigorating dishes you can harvest from your backyard garden or source from the farmer’s market.
Using watermelon in the base for this gazpacho adds natural sugar to an already fresh line-up of tomatoes, cucumber and sweet bell pepper. Mint adds another cooling element, but grassy cilantro or sweet basil would work as well. Slightly acidic with a peppery finish, this summer soup is a restorative treat after a long day in the sun or as a starter for a get-together among friends.
Knowing how well feta and watermelon pair, we couldn’t help joining in on the whipped feta craze for this summer harvest salad. It includes all your summer faves: avocado, tomato, cucumber, basil and, of course, watermelon. Whipped feta also marries beautifully with pita, crudités or everything bagels. I’ve taken to smearing it on my cucumber sandwiches.
With the multitude of ways this summer staple is enjoyed, the best July days end with sand in between our toes, tan lines and watermelon smiles.
1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
Thinly sliced red onion
Juice of half a lemon
WHIPPED FETA
4 oz feta, drained
4 oz cream cheese
2 tbsp olive oil, plus more for dressing

DIRECTIONS:
Prepare the whipped feta by combining cheese, olive oil, garlic, lemon zest and the juice of half a lemon in a food processor or blender. Blend until smooth and creamy. Spoon the whipped feta on the bottom of your salad serving bowl and drizzle with additional olive oil (if desired). Toss vegetables and basil together and transfer to the serving bowl. Port Aransas is one of the most popular beachfront destinations in Texas, and joining that coastal landscape is The Sandbar, a beachy, casual bar that embodies the spirit of laid-back coastal living. Located just minutes from the beach, The Sandbar is the perfect spot to grab a cold one before or after a day on the water. With its double-decker design and dog-friendly patio, The Sandbar provides a unique spot to hang out day or night, for pre-dinner drinks or post-beach refreshments.
While some business ventures begin with a dream, owner Jerry Anderson just follows his instincts. “You can’t have a preconceived plan for a bar and make everyone in that location happy with your plan,” Anderson said. “You must adapt to where you are opening the bar and just give the people what they want.” The concept delivers a fun, clean bar where locals and tourists can sit back and enjoy a beverage.
He was spot on in his assertion, as The Sandbar has become a favorite hangout spot boasting live music, indoor, outdoor and rooftop seating, lawn games and a family/dog friendly atmosphere of relaxation. Its impressive drink menu and weekly specials keep the locals coming back time and time again.
The traditional frozen margarita made with superior tequila is a crowd favorite, but that doesn’t stop the expert mixologists behind the bar from creating other exciting beverages. Whether you’re craving a refreshing mojito, a craft brew or something with a little more
flair, they’re ready to serve up unique and flavorful drinks that will satisfy even the most discerning palate. Next time you visit, try the Shark Bite, consisting of a strawberry frozen margarita and a Landshark lager tipped over into the glass.
Since opening in March of this year, the community response has prompted plans for a food truck or external kitchen, along with a shuffleboard and a golf tee game to enhance the experience. For now, visitors can count on weekly frozen drink specials and an unparalleled atmosphere. Whether you seek a relaxing afternoon in the sun, an exciting evening of socializing or a vibrant night of entertainment, the Sandbar in Port Aransas is the place to be.
Sunset Island, the strip of sandy beach under JFK Causeway along the Intracoastal Waterway, is known for the landmark restaurant Snoopy’s. Over its 43-year tenure as a beloved waterfront eatery, Snoopy’s has seen renovations, an expansion with the addition of Scoopy’s Ice Cream — and now the opening of its newest eatery, Snoopy’s Pearl Oyster Bar.
“The Pearl,” as owner and real estate developer Mitchell Kalogridis affectionately calls it, has the same great view and rustic vibe as its sister restaurant. Walking up the grand pier to the entrance, patrons have plenty of photo ops next to hand-painted murals and the iconic Snoopy’s Pelican. Inside are 10-top teak root dining tables flanking a massive full-service bar. In spite of the impressive furnishings, the eye is drawn to the south and west-facing walls of the restaurant, both of which are open to the beautiful views and refreshing sea breeze.
Where Snoopy’s Pearl Oyster Bar stands out is in its elevated menu. First-time diners may show up seeking 15+ oyster varieties from around the world and come back for the filet mignon. What started
as a simple concept to serve a variety of oysters developed into a multifaceted menu of old and new favorites: panseared scallops, prosciutto-wrapped mahi mahi and a show-stopping seafood tower. Kalogridis credits this to the talent of his chefs and the creative process. “We continually strive to push to a higher standard in culinary experiences,” he said.
Kalogridis grew up with Florida saltwater in his hair. He remembers his dad sitting him on the bar stool of their first family-owned oyster bar. After purchasing Sunset Island, he sought to protect Snoopy’s legacy and heighten the already bustling marina at Marker 37.
He’s done just that. From the pistachio-crusted salmon to the Nutella and caramelized banana crepes, Snoopy’s Pearl Oyster Bar offers superior choices for Sunday brunch, lunch and dinner. To start, we swooned over the oysters El Salvador, grilled oysters topped with cold ceviche and a creamy avocado salad, and the Far East oysters flavored with spicy wasabi, pickled ginger and shaved red onion. The Pearl’s three-tier tower of Dungeness crab, clams and mussels sautéed in white wine, shrimp cocktail and oysters on the half shell seals the deal.
With this addition, Sunset Island now has a bit of everything, and is proving itself to be a sensational Padre Island destination for tourists and locals alike.

What started as a whale-watching trip off the coast of the Pacific Northwest in July 2005 quickly turned into a onewoman quest as Lyn Christoph began to track down the maker of a scarf she picked up while waiting to board a boat. After putting the scarf around her neck and feeling the amazing fabric, Christoph, a knitter herself, had to know where the material came from. Weeks of searching later, she found out it was made from alpaca yarn. On a subsequent trip to the PNW in 2006, Christoph planned a full weekend on San Juan Island, where she discovered an alpaca farm. Her first face-to-face with the fluffy animal on a misty morning was all it took; she was smitten.
The following year, Christoph purchased three alpacas from a farm outside San Antonio and started her family's business, Gulf Breeze Alpaca & Sheep Ranch & Lodging, on five acres of land. Since then, it has expanded to 30 acres, and is home to 13 alpacas and nine sheep that her family is eager to share with the community in a multitude of ways.
Over the years, the Christophs have learned how to shear the animals that were bred and born on the ranch, bypassing the need to transport them for shearing. “From field to fashion,” as the Christophs
say — the fleece of the alpacas and sheep are made into the yarns and rovings for sale or for use in creating finished products such as socks, gloves, scarves and shawls, all available for purchase at the Fiber Arts Studio and Shop on the property. The yarns and rovings are made in a variety of weights and are suitable for knitting, crocheting, weaving and other fiber arts … all of which visitors can learn more about via the various classes available at the farm.
In addition to the fiber products and classes, Gulf Breeze offers a variety of farm tours, lodging and “Alpaca 101,” which presents guests with the unique opportunity to learn more about feeding, watering and tending to the animals on the grounds and other elements of the
alpaca farm lifestyle. The Christophs are also registered Harvest Hosts for selfcontained travelers to park their RV or vans on the property for overnight stays.
Whether it’s a class, a tour or a weekend away at one of the lodges, the Christoph family has created a one-ofa-kind experience by bringing alpacas to the Coastal Bend and sharing them with all those who visit. Now you too can have a face-to-face encounter with these impossibly fluffy animals and be captivated by their charm.

THE CALLER-TIMES WAS PRINTED DOWNTOWN FOR NEARLY 90 YEARS
BY: JILLIAN BECQUET PHOTO CREDIT: CORPUS CHRISTI PUBLIC LIBRARIES, LA RETAMA SPECIAL COLLECTIONS & ARCHIVES.As iconic as the Caller-Times building is to us today, it’s actually been the site of much change. The CallerTimes, formed upon the merger of two papers in 1929, hasn’t always called that site home. Each paper, the Caller and the Times, had its own offices. They consolidated during the merger to an office in the 300 block of N. Chaparral, across from today’s Executive Surf Club.
In October 1935, the entire operation, including a 36ton printing press, was moved to the Lower Broadway site from offices six blocks away, at 405 Mesquite. The building was smaller than the one we know today, running 50 feet on Lower Broadway and 114 down Twigg. After expansions in 1948, 1952, 1958, 1984 and 1994, the building takes up the entire block at 81,893 square feet.
The latest renovation’s highlight was a $10 million Goss Metroliner offset press, used to print the CallerTimes and several other regional newspapers in-house. The press printed the daily news on the four-story-tall press for 30 years, until its last run Mar. 1, 2023. Through numerous ownership changes in the time since that renovation, the building has stood relatively unchanged at 820 N. Lower Broadway — until a fresh paint job and the addition of a brightly colored mural, “Endless Sunset: The Color of Our City” by Sandra Gonzalez, in 2016.
Now, as the Caller-Times enters an era without its printing business, more change is coming to the paper … and to the building it called home for nearly 90 years.
