Q: What is your favorite hidden gem every Coastal Bend local should know about?
BO: The Grandview lounge at the top of the Best Western. I never knew it was there! It’s the only time i’ve seen the marina from up above and it’s incredible to see things from a new perspective. Solid plan is to walk there after the farmers market and have a drink while you watch the sunset.
KB: I am not sure if this is necessarily a hidden gem, but I love Rockport Beach. The shallow water is great for small children and we love to lounge beneath a cabana.
TM: I’d have to say partaking in a ride with Horses on the Beach. This is an absolute must-do for anyone in the Coastal Bend!

With the nature of our cover story revolving completely around iconic Coastal Bend imagery and history, we felt it only fitting to have a cover that represented that same sentiment. We knew Brynn Osborn was the perfect person for this job. The water reflection photo gracing our cover this month was shot on a Canon 5D MKII and then flipped and edited beautifully. With the exception of leaving for college, I’ve lived in the Corpus Christi area my whole life. This has worked in my favor when it comes to putting together a local lifestyle magazine each month – but even when you think you know your city like the back of your hand, it still finds a way to surprise and excite you. Turning our entire cover feature into a 12-part quiz revolving around iconic Coastal Bend landmarks, imagery, history, people, and places didn’t seem very daunting. That is, until we sat down to actually create the component puzzles and quizzes. Over the course of two weeks, our Art Director Jarred Schuetze and I racked our brains, the brains of our confidants, and the internet to come up with the content you’ll find beginning on page 28.
What stood out to me the most when creating this quiz feature was that … well, perhaps I don’t know the Coastal Bend as intimately as I might have thought. I am fairly familiar with the here and now, sure, but our region’s extraordinary past certainly helped to shape what we know to be the Coastal Bend today. Uncovering, and finding ways to incorporate, those surprising gems of information felt like a real-life treasure hunt.
From a crossword puzzle featuring local staples (that even I have trouble completing even though I made it) to a Lotería bucket list featuring Corpus Christi Lotería, you’ll have a good time – and maybe even a slightly stressful time – completing these 10 pages of fun.
Inside this issue, we are also thrilled to finally share with you all our newest endeavor: The Bend Shop. Any time we embark on a new project here at the magazine, we ask ourselves if it is rooted in our purpose. Embedded in the idea of celebrating and highlighting what makes the Coastal Bend so great, The Bend Shop definitely is.
The Bend Shop is a curated collection of Coastal Bend-made products by creatives and makers throughout the area, and our own Bend-branded items. On a seasonal basis, we will drop themed collections featuring a different set of local brands each time. Our goal is to not only share quality products with you, but to do what we do best: share each of our makers’ stories through beautiful, visual storytelling.
I’d like to take a moment to sincerely thank our first collection’s local makers – who you will meet on page 20 – for trusting us with their creations and stories, and for truly understanding the vision we have for this shop. We cannot wait for you to see what we have in store (literally)!
While we’re on the topic of gratitude, I’d also like to express a great deal of it to Brynn Osborn, who has been providing our publication with the most exceptional photos for about three years, including – for the first time – this month’s stunning cover. With classic Coastal Bend imagery a must given the feature, we knew it was the perfect time to embrace Osborn’s talent.

CONSERVING FRESHWATER AND COASTAL NATURAL RESOURCES FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS

ocated along the narrow stretch of coastline we call home, where the saltwater and freshwater mix, more than 70 percent of valuable natural economic resources are found. Aransas-Copano, Corpus Christi-Nueces, and upper Laguna Madre-Baffin Bay are the three major estuarine systems that encompass more than 3,200 species of plants and animals. To protect these bays and estuaries, scientists, business owners, and private citizens organized the Coastal Bend Bays Foundation (CBBF) in 1991. The CBBF is a public-interest organization that brings diverse interests together to achieve communal ecological and economic objectives.
One of those objectives being a federal designation for Corpus Christi and the surrounding bays as an “Estuary of National Significance.” This designation served as a catalyst for developing the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program and many other accomplishments, including the Coastal Bend Land Trust, various educational programs, and outreach events including free public information forums, Adopt-A-Beach clean-up, and Earth Day-Bay Day.
Coastal Bend Bays Foundation President Melissa Brewer says, “Once a month, we host a Coastal Issues Forum ... Citizens interested in what's going on in the area can hear from featured speakers what it is they're researching in the area and how that affects the community.”
Along with the forums, the annual Earth Day-Bay Day festival educates thousands of attendees on environmental stewardship. CBBF partners with more than 50 local businesses and groups to work in tandem and highlight new and innovative ways to enjoy and conserve nature.
Their efforts and events throughout the year collectively form a platform for community stakeholders to become informed, get involved, and share their opinions. CBBF's mission promotes awareness and inspires conservation for our coastal wildlife and environments. The Foundation conducts in-depth research to identify ecological solutions for local projects such as the Oso Outreach Project, Suter Park Erosion Plan, Pollywog Pond, and more. Every year, the CBBF bestows the Conservation and Environmental Stewardship Award to nominated individuals based on their significant contributions to different conservation efforts.
"We like to be involved out there and bring awareness to the community. Without a healthy environment, we're setting ourselves up to be unhealthy," Brewer says. "The foundational aspect of a healthy community is the environment in which we all live. Whether it's industrial or you're a teacher, we all live and work here, we are all interested in [sustainable] economic development. Taking care of our environment is the foundation for good health, a healthy environment, and a healthy community."

A CONVERSATION WITH ONE OF THE COASTAL BEND’S MOST EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN ON HER LIFE’S JOURNEY, HER CONTRIBUTIONS TO EDUCATION AND CIVIL RIGHTS, AND WHAT BRINGS HER JOY

KC: Let’s start with some background information. In a few sentences, share with us a bit about your journey through life.
DGS: I was born in Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston, Texas on April 14, 1938. I attended Fourth Missionary Baptist Church Kindergarten from September 1941 when I was three years old until May 1943 when I graduated as the valedictorian of my class. I went on to attend Blackshear Elementary School (which was two blocks from my house) and Jack Yates High School. I graduated as the Salutatorian of my class with a 4.986 GPA (which was only .0001 below the Valedictorian). I was awarded an E.E. Worthing Scholarship and the Fill Four Year College Scholarship. I then went on to attend Indiana University and received my master's.
KC: In school, you studied Zoology, Botany, and Genetics. What initially drew you to those fields?
DGS: I have a B.A. in Zoology with a minor in Botany and my M.A. is in Zoology and Botany with Genetics as the subject area. My master’s thesis research required attention to the question of, “Could an animal live and perform if it had a different genetic composition from the normal diploid genetic composition of that species?" That concept itself really drew me to these specific fields.
KC: Tell me about your PhD and what the experience of obtaining it was like.
DGS: As I was very involved and fascinated with animals and their “normalcy,” I decided to [continue my education in that field]. Therefore, for my research, I posed the questions of, “How would the toad frog function if it only had one half of its normal genetic composition?" I created the “haploid frog,” frogs that had only one half of their normal diploid composition, and treated them compared to normal frogs. I observed their behavior and how they did or did not survive as a haploid animal. My PhD research also focused on this subject with genetic discrepancies to others. My severe curiosity about animals', and certainly humans', composition–determining how they function in life – is what drew me to these ideas and concepts.
KC: You’ve made great contributions to the civil rights movement and continue to remain a figure in the fight for racial and social justice. I’d love for you to share a bit about that.
DGS: The one thing that really used to bother me as a little girl was why I couldn’t go to the library. The public libraries in Houston became open to Black people either during my senior year or after I had graduated. When it first opened, I walked through every inch of the library. That was my sort of defiance. When you say “the civil rights movement,” I say “the modern civil rights movement.” If you know history, you know there were many riots, early, where Black people rose up against the treatment being given to them.
When I first started teaching biology in Indianapolis in 1961, I was the first Black teacher at this predominantly white college. In the process of doing that, I decided that what I really wanted to do was work in Black colleges for Black kids. I knew there were hundreds of thousands of Black kids just like me, poor, who didn’t have access to a number of things, who needed to have people help move them along.
You can focus on obstacles, or you can go on and decide what you want to do about it. To me, it breaks down to that: you can do and not just be. (Excerpt from I Dream A World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America.)
KC: The bulk of your career has been in the field of education. What about education are you so passionate about and why do you continue to work in the school system to this day?
DGS: I am so passionate about education because it is what determines where and how and what a human being can do. The more in-depth (at any level, from kindergarten through doctoral study) and high quality education there is, the better the results will be in creating excellence in functioning for human beings. Therefore, I continue to work in the school system (even as just a volunteer at this point in my career) because I am committed to producing the best minds for America of all biological races, so that we can improve life.
KC: In 1975, you became the first Black woman president of the National Girl Scouts Organization. Tell me about that. experience and what it has meant to you.
DGS: [Originally], Robinwood was at the south end of the property that was on a lake outside of Houston, while the white girl scouts had the property at the north end of the property. Even though the purpose and structure and content of the Girl Scout program experience [was to] provide growth and development, there were barriers.
It meant a lot to become the National President because of the opportunity to help move human relations beyond color. Changing the Girl Scout Pin to the present day pin – which has the three profiles of faces of three girls, representing white, brown, and black, the genetic range of skin color – was one of the ways in which the program became more inclusive for all girls.
KC: You’ve made history with your achievements in more ways than one over the course of your life. What would you say are some of your proudest moments?
DGS: One proud moment was when the Girl Scout National Board adopted the agenda item at the National Conference that then created the new Girl Scout pin. A second proud moment in my life was when I was appointed, over a period of several years, by several U.S. presidents to national and international organizations and events, representing the United States. Another would have to
be running the last mile of the torch for United Nations International Women’s Year Celebration and Meeting that was held in Houston. The torch had been all over the world and I, as one of the commissioners in Houston – because of my contributions to women's and girl's development – was chosen to run the last mile into the opening of the conference.
KC: You actually have a day dedicated to you! How did you feel when the City of Corpus Christi named June 18th Dr. Gloria Randle Scott Day?
DGS: I was and am [still] very honored that the City of Corpus Christi created my day. I still am always trying to live up to that designation. I had no idea it was even being considered, but was pleased that the contributions I have made and still try to make for our community would be recognized in this way.
KC: What keeps you up at night?
DGS: Trying to figure out where our country is headed! And, hoping that we will all come to our senses.
KC: What brings you joy?
DGS: Seeing how the various religious, social, athletic, and educational institutions and the commitments being made [by them] around the world to our younger generations and what that will positively allow them to do!

AQUATIC KNOWLEDGE FROM CANADIAN NATIONAL CHAMPION SWIMMER DEAN “KONDO” KONDZIOLKA

ean Kondziolka is a decorated swimmer with years of unrivaled experience under his swim cap. Originally from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, Kondziolka began swimming at the age of 9, and the sport became a gateway to see the world. Having seven Canadian National Champion titles and claim to the 50-meter sprint along with the 100-meter freestyle, Kondziolka soon was a serious threat in the swimming circuit. He swam for the University of California–Berkeley from 1991 to 1992. He then transferred to the University of Lethbridge, which provided the training changes needed for Kondziolka to improve and compete internationally. Transferring allowed him to win bronze at the 1993 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Kobe, Japan.
Now, we are happy to have Kondziolka in the Coastal Bend. Kondziolka, like several migratory species, desired warmer weather with a beautiful view. Anyone having lived above the 49th parallel knows the ennui that comes with shorter winter days. With the climate affecting his behavior, attitude, and energy, Kondziolka took a chance on Corpus Christi to serve as his panacea.
After some time in the Coastal Bend, Kondziolka created the High Performance Aquatic Club in 2017. A relatively new venture, it’s been holding up well throughout its infancy and the turbulence of 2020. But this independently run club is working to create the next generation of swimmers through the leadership of Kondziolka.
Open to anyone from 6 years old to 19, the High Performance Aquatic Club boasts a distinctive mascot: The Banana Slugs, inspired by the shirt John Travolta wears in Pulp
Fiction. "I wanted something people would remember and to have fun with it," Kondziolka says. "If I can remember that t-shirt from the ’90s, then it is sure to stick with you."
Throughout 2020, several obstacles created strains for sports at every level –but Kondziolka mentioned that there was not a single case traced back to swimming pools during the pandemic's apex. During restrictions and closures, the team got creative, conducting workouts off Ocean Drive and doing plyometric work on the sea wall's steps and conditioning around the area. To get swim work in, Kondziolka simulated swimming pool standards out by Emerald Beach Hotel. The markers in the water allowed the Banana Slugs to not skip a beat by training in the Gulf. The mentality, knowledge, and passion Kondziolka brings are generating renewed vigor. He coached a handful of times privately in Canada while taking a step back from the swim circuit after the 1996 Olympic trials, but did not become a dedicated coach until he started High Performance Aquatic Club. The Coastal Bend is lucky to have such an unrivaled talent giving back to the community. Kondziolka uses swimming to teach work ethic and provide a positive experience. "I would like for people to know that they can have a gratifying sport that doesn't require a ball."
Nonetheless, when discussing his athletes, he expresses his gratitude for having a group of loyal and dedicated swimmers. He makes sure to underscore the importance of their work ethic, and shares the mindset of a champion with his swimmers; to always be present and make sure they aim for excellence. After all, to be the best, one must learn from the best. The next generation of swimmers has that opportunity now available to them in the Coastal Bend.

Dr. April Hallquist is a board certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who was born and raised in a small town in Arkansas. She remained in Arkansas for college and earned her medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She went on to complete her Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. o say life at my house is busy would be an understatement. With my four-year-old son Joshua, three-yearold twins Duke and Leila, and my daughter Madison, who will be graduating in May from Georgetown University, things are never dull. Along with being a mom to my crazy crew, I am a reading therapist for dyslexic students and have a team of consultants in both the beauty industry and the health industry. Looking and feeling beautiful is important to me. I love sharing products I’ve discovered or learned about from the beautiful women in my life.
Did you know your skin is only 20 percent determined by our genes? Our daily habits are responsible for 80 percent of our aging. The earlier you start, the better – an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of filler. Two of my crucial tips are: Don’t smoke (female smokers are at a greater risk for developing wrinkles than male smokers; I know, it’s not fair), and protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. If you don’t believe the sun is aging your skin, look at your arm and compare the outside to the inside. Truly, the best gift you can give your skin is to wear sunscreen every single day.
My newest beauty revelation on the best order of applying makeup comes from my friend Danielle, a professional makeup artist. Complete your eye makeup before the rest of your face. I cannot count how many times I have been working on my eyes only to hit my face with a dab of mascara or have shadow fall along my cheek bone. Since I am usually in a hurry, I lose precious time having to redo my highlight, foundation, and blush.
Another vital tip I have is to find the right skincare routine and stick with it. Everyone has different skincare concerns and needs and there is no one skincare routine that is right for all skin types. Prioritize your main problem areas; acne, hyperpigmentation, aging skin, or redness. Choose products that contain specific ingredients to address your concern. Beyond these tips, there are a few “must-have” products I highly recommend.

Darn it! Lips age too! Hydrate yourself to keep your lips hydrated. During these dry months, you may need to use a lip serum or balm. My go-to lip serum is Rodan+Fields Lip Serum, but if I am in a pinch, Vaseline works wonders. Don’t forget to lightly exfoliate your lips – with a product, not your fingers – when you are exfoliating your face, too! Refrain from picking at your chapped lips, because that will always make them worse.

COLOR COMBINATIONS HELP CREATE THE PERFECT TEXAS COAST VACATION HOME

magine taking a vacation to a coastal resort community with beautiful scenery, beaches, upscale homes, and a variety of recreational activities. The lure of the peaceful scenery and relaxing ambiance of coastal living often drove Maria Villaronga and her wife, Dr. Donna Rolin, to visit the Hamptons in New York for a getaway. Although they live in Austin, Texas, the Hamptons was the perfect place for their vacation.
They loved the Hamptons so much that when Villaronga’s brother invited them to summertime parties at a beachside rental in Port Aransas, they realized how much it resembled what they loved about the Hamptons – and that they didn’t need to go to New York to enjoy a beach resort community. They immediately fell in love and decided to invest in a home there. They weren’t sure how things would work out, considering they both work full-time and have school-aged children, but they devised a game plan. It would be an investment opportunity that would give them a place to come enjoy a family vacation, but also a great place to rent out to families the remainder of the time … not to mention the ideal home to live in after retirement. Together with a contractor, they developed a custom floor plan and architecture.
The true challenge was how to translate their love of the Hamptons’ coastal vibe into the beauty of the Texas coastline. Luckily, part of the construction was going to include the high ceilings, tall doorways, and shiplap walls that are characteristic of a coastal home, and which also added a necessary aesthetic of a blank canvas before the décor is set.
Looking around Port Aransas and Mustang Island, Villaronga found that the gray-blue of the water and the dunes were unique to the Texas coast, so she decided to use them as the base for her color palette and décor choices. “The dunes are elaborate and intricate,” says Villaronga. “If you look at them, they have a lot of colors. They’re muted, but once you look closely, they’ve got Texas grasslands, beautiful yellow flowers, and cactus blooms amidst the muted browns of the sand.”
To combine their love of the Hamptons’ scenery with a Texas ambience, Villaronga and Rolin hired Kim Hewerdine, manager of local furniture shop Chic to Chic, as their interior designer. Hewerdine’s expertise with decorating interiors helped capture the chosen design for this home. Hewerdine helped with everything from the paint colors to furnishing from her shop, and sourced additional furniture from places with coastal scenery around the United States.
Villaronga and Rolin wanted their home to be unique, so they found common elements to use in each room that would tie their décor together. The counter on
the island was a piece that Villaronga found at Ferguson’s and immediately fell in love with. The sea glass imbedded in the kitchen island counter is bright with shades of light blue and sea blue, working perfectly as the focal point to tie other elements, such as the teal backsplash in the kitchen, to other areas in the home. Natural wicker, too, appears peppered throughout the home, standing out amid the soft and rich blues in the home and weaving the dunes and sand into the ocean-like aesthetic.
Villaronga also didn’t want to overpower the rooms with décor that would overwhelm her guests, so in addition to the plain colors, Hewerdine chose pillows with varying textures – which also helped to differentiate the patterns and color schemes in each room.
Their décor is definitely unique, but in addition to being unique, it is also user-friendly, especially for people with mobility issues. When working with the designer, the couple required a room downstairs for family members with limited mobility. The room is sparsely furnished to facilitate movement for people with walkers or wheelchairs, but still has the same coastal décor with
plush white bedding, rich ocean blue throw pillows with intricate patterns, and coastal artwork adorning the walls. The room is also located next to the back door, which has a ramp that leads to the carport outside. It’s one of the few area homes with this amenity.
With school-aged children, bunk rooms are a must. Not only do they provide a great place for sleepovers, but adults love them, too! When Villaronga and Rolin designed this room, they wanted to create the ambiance of an ocean, which was achieved with four built-in, full-sized white bunk beds, with navy blue sheets. Each cubby has its own lighting and offers an “under the sea” feeling, complete with fish artwork on the walls. “It’s a really fun room, and people fight over who gets to stay in that room,” says Villaronga.
With a combination of the color scheme of the home and the unique designs in each room, they’ve achieved their goal to bring the outdoor coastal ambience into the home, creating a sophisticated retreat that makes you feel like you’re on vacation the entire time.
Plant well-grown transplant in full sun in well-drained soil. Does not require rich soil or fertilizer. Space 18” to 24”. Grows to three or four feet in height. Mulch with native leaves. Water regularly until plant is established, then water only as needed; do not overwater. Once established, take frequent cuttings of top 4” to 6” to stimulate growth. New growth leaves are more tender and less woody for culinary uses. No pest problems.
Rosemary is easy to propagate. Clip the top 6” of new growth from an established plant. With fingers, strip away the bottom 2” to 3” of leaves. Place the bottom, stripped part of the stem into compost or starter mix in a pot with excellent drainage. Loosely cover the pot with plastic to help hold in heat and moisture. Keep the soil moist until roots start (a few weeks), then harden off plant and move to full sun.
GROWING ROSEMARY IN THE COASTAL BEND

osemary is the first herb mentioned in recorded history. Egyptian scholars chiseled their love for rosemary into stone tablets roughly 5,000 years before Christ.
The Ancient Greeks wrote about rosemary as early as 500 BCE. Pliny the Elder, the celebrated Roman historian, details the culture and culinary uses of rosemary in his classic text, The Natural World.
Rosemary is for remembrance, or so the illfated Ophelia tells us in Hamlet. It has been used throughout history in the burial process, where its strong scent masked less pleasant odors. Mourners tied bundles of rosemary sprigs together and waved them beneath their noses as they wept over the departed and said their farewells.
It is for remembrance of marriage vows, as well. It's been used across a wide range of cultures over many centuries in wedding ceremonies: woven into crowns for brides; worn as adornments by grooms; and used in the officiating process itself.
Rosemary is a perennial, evergreen shrub native to the hot shores of the Mediterranean Sea. In fact, the literal translation of rosemary from Latin means “dew of the sea.” This is great news for us here on the Gulf Coast, where rosemary thrives.
Rosemary loves hot weather, will tolerate some drought, and can survive even our coldest winters. Once your rosemary plants are established, they only require periodic watering and almost no maintenance at all.
If possible, plant rosemary in its own dedicated space, rather than grouped with annual garden herbs, such as basil, dill, and coriander. While most other herbs in a kitchen garden survive only a season or two, rosemary will happily make itself at home as a permanent fixture in your landscape.
“The great thing about rosemary is that its life lasts all year. It's fragrant and wonderful to enjoy in any season. Rosemary is a great addition to tequila, vodka, and whiskey creations. The leaves are extremely versatile and can be muddled, infused in a liquor, or used in a syrup, in addition to be a fantastic garnish. At BKK we use it for a simple syrup. ARTIST OF ALL MEDIUMS ON HIS NEWEST PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION

founding member of the Rockport Art Association, established in 1967, Steve Russell has long been an integral figure in the local art community. Russell was born and raised in Corpus Christi, and is a true historian with a plethora of knowledge, experiences, and memories that date back to a time when the third coast looked a lot different than it does today. And it is this rich history that Russell weaves into the narrative of his artwork.
Steve Russell is a legend in Rockport. He has mentored numerous artists who now make up a large part of Rockport’s Cultural Art District. Similarly, Rockport is home to many well-known artists who have shown their work all over the nation, who mentored Russell in his early days. Having the invaluable influence of major art players guide his own artistry, Russell has been able to explore mediums including painting, glass blowing, jewelry, sculpture, and many other variations of art. In each of these disciplines, the viewer can get a sense of the profoundness found in the atmosphere of the sub-tropic, coastal plains.
In his latest endeavor, Russell is working hand in hand with the Rockport Cultural Art District (RCAD) on a public art installation: a series of bronze sculptures that explore the days of European conquistadors and the Karankawa Indians, who are native to Corpus Christi. In fact, RCAD is sponsoring Russell to create this iconic depiction of historical Corpus Christi at a time when the natural resources available to survive were (and still are) fish, shellfish, crab, and game such as deer and wild hog.
And there could be no better person than Steve Russell to tell this story, since he has witnessed the many changes and evolution of the community – not to mention that his ability to recall even the most minute historical details is unmatched. RCAD’s executive director, Jennifer Day, says Russell can “tell you where the beach used to be.”
Day calls Russell a “true renaissance man.” His broad portfolio of accolades makes him an excellent storyteller, too. He’s invested a great deal of time and effort into constructing this series, consisting of two sets of three nine-foottall bronze sculptures, and the narrative is peppered with references to local culture and industry.
As if six nine-foot bronze sculptures aren’t impressive enough, Russell’s installation will showcase a European conquistador, a pirate, and a monk together on a boat emerging from the horizon. Yes, emerging from the bayfront! This first set of sculptures will be situated atop a large 40-foot rock in the water. As the first set of bronzes will tell the story of the Europeans approaching the coastline of land which belonged to the native Karankawa Indians, Russell is creating a sculpture of a male, female, and baby which will be placed on shore.
“There are a lot of requirements from an engineering standpoint,” says Day. “We have been working on this with Steve since last year.” After a few rounds of successful fundraising, Russell got started on set one (the portion of the
installation that will live in the water). “It is an out-of-the-box idea that brings up all sorts of geotechnical aspects to protect art in the water,” Day explains.
Knowing the potential limitations that he would have to work around, Russell thoughtfully made the decision to use bronze because of its complementary relationship to saltwater. Day stressed the importance of the sustainability and integrity of the art, and how that can only be a reality if the wellbeing of the surrounding natural habitat is cared for, too.
Russell is mentally and physically ready to begin the second and final set for his installation. Another successful online art auction in which local Rockport painters donated their pieces to this virtual bidding event has enabled Russell to focus on completing part two of the project.
The collaboration has given Russell the chance to create and showcase without having to personally attend to all of the administrative and logistical aspects, and hand over concerns such as the feasibility of securing a massive bronze art piece in the middle of the bay.
When it is all said and done, while this project is a solo installation, Russell is actively engaging Rockport Fulton’s “art colony” – artists who he’s mentored or been mentored by – to collectively create other forms of public art, i.e. murals, in the cultural art district. He doesn’t have to do much for the ears of admirers to perk up. He is a Rockport legend, after all.

orpus Christi has a new hotspot for tourists and locals alike. Sunset Island, a development by Mitchell Kalogridis, is the recently opened boardwalk on S. Padre Island Drive.
Many will be familiar with this area; longtime local favorites Snoopy’s Pier and Scoopy's Ice Cream Shoppe are at the heart of Sunset Island. The locale suffered damage following 2017’s Hurricane Harvey and still had not fully recovered years later. In 2018, Kalogridis decided to purchase and develop the marina, and in 2019, Snoopy's and Scoopy's were purchased – bringing to life his longtime vision.
“It’s been my heart’s desire to build an entertainment district,” Kalogridis says. “I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a long time. I saw this as an opportunity to be much more than just a marina.”
And expand it he has. Mile Marker 37 has become a first of its kind in the city. Located on the waterfront, it features restaurants, shopping, sightseeing, and an array of outdoor activities – all nestled in lush landscaping.
“There’s art, it’s a music venue, a nationally recognized fishing tournament spot, a birdwatching destination, an area recognized for water sports of every kind, a wedding venue, and more,” Kalogridis says. “We have retail shops; Sunset Island is home to one of the largest Panama Jack shops in the state, the iconic Snoopy’s restaurant, and we’re continuing to grow.”
Water sport and rentals of all kinds can be found at Sunset Island, for whatever mood you may be in, from relaxing activities to highadrenaline sports. “Sunset Island has kayaking, jet skis, stand-up paddleboarding rentals and classes, boat rentals, windsurfing, and more.” Kalogridis added that this aspect of Sunset Island will continue to be developed. “We are focused on growing, recruiting, and facilitating and putting in the infrastructure to be a national headquarters for wind sports: windsurfing and sailboarding.”
Mile Marker 37 originally opened over 40 years ago. While hours can sometimes flex due to weather and seasons, Sunset Island is generally open from 5:30 am till sunset. After being destroyed by Hurricane Harvey, the popular Paradise Pier has been rebuilt and is open for fishing to private parties.
And from the surf to the sand, another favorite at Sunset Island is volleyball for leisure and professional players of all ages. “We are very excited about our volleyball courts,” says Kalogridis. “We want it to be a stopping place for beach volleyball, collegiate volleyball, and state organizational volleyball.”
From the activities to the events, hours of fun can be had in just one spot. A unique aspect of Sunset Island is that you can find something new every time you visit, from tournaments to boat parades. It’s an ideal spot to try a new activity or just enjoy the views. The sunsets come at no cost because at Sunset Island, parking is always free, and there’s no charge to enter the boardwalk.
“We want everybody to be able to come.” Kalogridis encourages. “Come and enjoy the prettiest sunsets in Corpus Christi.”
There is something for everyone at Sunset Island, and it was created with families in mind.
“We are all about family. If we are about any one thing, it’s family.” Kalogridis explains that each day, Sunset Island has tens of thousands of feet of deck work for families to eat, play, and relax. “It’s very touching to see.”
Kalogridis, who has been visiting and living in the Coastal Bend throughout his entire life, has a fondness for the simple joys of the Coastal Bend and finds it heartwarming to see wholesome simplicity captured for visitors.
“Someone asked me why I did all this, and I had a picture on my phone. It’s of two little kids sitting at the ends of the pier, arms around each other, watching the sunset, holding ice cream cups. That’s what it’s about.”

CARROT CAKE, RASPBERRY LEMON, AND BANANAS FOSTER DONUTS

ho is your sweetheart? They come in all shapes and sizes – we have some little sweethearts at home who are always hungry, and always ready for donuts. They don’t mind taste-testing our many donut experiments. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.
Your sweetheart may be a big, burly man or an enchanting young lady; an elderly grandmother or a young father; an old flame or a new romance. One thing is for sure: Every sweetheart loves donuts!
We experimented with many recipes to find the right balance between sweetness, density, and depth of flavor. We also wanted a donut that was easy and fast to prepare, but versatile enough to deliver a variety of flavors.
We discovered that cake donuts (baked in the oven rather than fried) offered the best flavor and versatility, but at a highly reduced calorie count! By baking instead of frying your donuts, you can serve them more often … and eat more of them when you do.
We begin with a master donut recipe of endless versatility. You can prepare these donuts and dust them with powdered or cinnamon sugar, or modify the master recipe to the variation you like best.
Balancing a few key ingredients is paramount in achieving the desired texture and taste of these cake donuts. The slight acidity in buttermilk helps leaven the
donut and contrasts the sweetness of the toppings. For lighter, fluffier donuts, try cake flour; though we prefer a more substantial crumb and opted for all-purpose. Granulated sugar by itself lacks depth of flavor, while using only brown sugar leads to tough donuts. Use a mixture of granulated and brown sugar for just the right texture and sweetness.
Our toppings come from local ingredients ripening at this moment in the garden: carrots, rosemary and lemon, and bananas. Overly ripened bananas give our Bananas Foster donuts a rich and compelling sweetness. Find them in a friend’s backyard or from a local farmer’s market. We slather them in cream cheese icing spiced with rum to mimic the rummy vanilla ice cream in the popular dessert.
Earthy rosemary and tart lemon marry beautifully together in some of our favorite pasta, bread, and dessert. These flavors are so good on donuts, it’s surprising they are not donut staples. The rosemary counters the acidity of the lemon, resulting in a complexity your typical runof-the-mill donut lacks.
Make your sweetheart feel especially loved this Valentine’s Day with these wonderful treats. Nothing says “I love you” better than fresh, homemade donuts. Come to think of it, when you make these homemade donuts for your special someone, the real sweetheart is you!
Master Cake Donut
Makes 1 Dozen
PREP TIME: 20 minutes
COOK TIME: 10 minutes
INGREDIENTS:
Non-stick baking spray
1/2 stick unsalted butter, room temperature
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup light brown sugar
2 eggs, room temperature
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup buttermilk, room temperature
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Prep two standard donut pans with non-stick baking spray. In a large bowl, whisk all of the dry ingredients and set aside.
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat butter and sugars on high speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Reduce mixer speed to medium; add eggs and vanilla, beating until combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture in two batches, alternating with milk, and beat just until combined.
Spoon batter into donut pans, filling about 3/4 full.
Bake until tops of donuts spring back when lightly pressed, about 10 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool.
CARROT CAKE VARIATION: Complete steps 1 and 2 as above, increasing cinnamon to 1 teaspoon and omitting the nutmeg. Add 1/2 cup grated carrots, 8 oz crushed pineapple that has been strained, and 1/3 cup shredded sweetened coconut to the prepared batter and stir to mix. Spoon mixture into prepared pans and bake as instructed in step 4. In a separate bowl, beat 4 ounces softened cream cheese, 1/4 cup softened butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and 1 cup powdered sugar until no lumps remain. Top cooled donuts with cream cheese glaze, shredded coconut, and roasted, chopped walnuts.
ROSEMARY LEMON: Substituting spices for 2 tbsp lemon zest and 1 tbsp minced rosemary, complete steps 1-4 as above. While donuts are baking, prepare rosemary lemon glaze as follows: heat 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1/4 cup water, and 1 large sprig rosemary over medium heat. Remove from heat as soon as mixture starts to boil. Add 2 tbsp unsalted butter and let cool to room temperature. Stir in 2 cups powdered sugar and 1 tbsp lemon zest, and drizzle over donuts. Garnish with candied lemon rind.
BANANAS FOSTER: Complete step 1 as above. Add 2 over-ripened bananas to butter and proceed with steps 2-4 as above. In a medium sized bowl, combine 3 ounces cream cheese, 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, 1 tbsp softened butter, 1 tbsp milk, and 1 tbsp rum (or rum extract). Drizzle donuts with rum glaze and top with roasted pecans and spun sugar.

Scribbled notes containing the plant magic that combines various tea blends for proprietary recipes are dancing with prose that resembles love notes. The mad fairy scientist is at work.
Coryn Wenger, the founder of a new local tea company named Petal to the Kettle, is a lifelong ally of Mother Nature. Wenger has always been entranced with the healing properties that have been embedded in nature’s bounty since the beginning of time. Having spent her childhood growing up around her parents’ local cafe, Wenger said she is accustomed to experimenting in the kitchen and “throwing spices together and learning the subtle poetry of flavor.”
“What has inspired me to create Petal to the Kettle is my genuine care for others,” says Wenger. It is easy to absorb the chaos, noise, and stress that buzzes all around just being a human presence in this world, she explained. On the surface, one could easily connect the dots – she creates calming tea blends to counteract the effects the everyday rat race has on us. But ending the story there would be painfully shortsighted. Yes, Wenger’s approach to botanics is rooted in a slow and sensual process meant to help ground her tea-lovers and realign their souls. However, her primary fascination is in Eastern homeopathic remedies and Ayurvedic practices as a holistic approach to medicine dating back more than 5,000 years. “What [these] ancient traditions have already discovered of plants’ sacred power, modern science can now prove.”
Studying these teachings and incorporating their knowledge into everyday life has provided the momentum on which the business thrives. Wenger explained that creating a tea product naturally packed with benefits ranging from anxiety relief to hormone balance and vitality to energetic syncing is where she finds herself the most content.
Petal to the Kettle brings accessibility to healthy living and approachable health education – something that hasn’t always been easy to find in our city. “One of my heart’s goals is to open up conversations about wellness in a gentle and understanding way,” says Wenger. “As my holistic knowledge grows, I want to share accessible healing tips and what has personally helped me to enrich my days.”
If Wenger’s approach to healing sounds like it’s from someone who has “been there done that,” it’s because she has. As a person who is not shy about her personal journey with mental health and wellness, Wenger knows firsthand that conversations like these are necessary. Her goal is to infuse our community with a unique take on loose-leaf teas and ultimately inspire others to let their passions free to make their mark on the Bend.
Petal to the Kettle is arriving on the popup market scene more frequently these days, serving up tons of tea and elixir creations –and soon, unique merchandise, photoshoots, and recipe videos. “I am enhancing my pop-up setup and menu concepts for a more memorable experience for the consumer,” Wenger says. And as her passion projects continue to soar from ideas on a drawing board to endless mugs of steaming plant magic, Wenger has only just leapt down the rabbit hole of the healing alchemy of nature’s petals.

nside a little box of delights neatly rest artisanal confections, fait avec amore by a local cottage baker. That is the world of Sucré, Jeannette Hernandez’s homebased pastry workshop for the sweet-seekers of the Coastal Bend.
Hernandez, wife and mother of two, has mixed and baked and iced delicacies for a decade. Recently, the Corpus Christi native decided it was time to whip up her own baking business, and ventured out solo to start Sucré. The name, meaning “sugared” or “sweet,” is what Hernandez envisioned she’d name a business of her own someday – back almost a decade ago when she studied French in college.
“My favorite desserts to make are classical European desserts, because I love how buttery, delicate, not overly sweet, and beautiful they are,” says Hernandez. “I appreciate the time and technique required to make them. It’s methodical and brings me back to some of my favorite memories of being in school and visiting Europe.”
Hernandez was classically trained at Le Cordon Bleu, where during her time as a culinary arts major, she happened to fall in love with the art of pastry making. Along with her formal training, Hernandez has also gathered skills from working in the patisserie field. Hernandez’s passion for baking drives her success at filling orders from home, including sometimes working well before the sun comes up and adhering to health and safety rules that have challenged her to think creatively in terms of using her space.
When the pandemic began, it started out with Hernandez baking loaves of bread for some of her friends, bartering baked goods for a few groceries, and working on her own recipes during the lockdown period.
Sucré’s most recent mouthwatering macaron flavors include: white chocolate cranberry, spiced fig, cinnamon mocha, clementine and dark chocolate, salted caramel, and London fog.
“My husband asked me why I didn’t want to start selling my baked goods. And I honestly didn’t have any reasons good enough to counter his reasons why I should,” she says.
The plan started with her making dessert boxes, but after deciding to include a la carte options as well, the end result turned into a full-on menu to pick a variety of pastries from.
“The support that has been shown for my small business has been so encouraging. Every order that comes in feels like confirmation that I made the right decision. Still a nerve-racking one, nonetheless.”
From different flavored madeleines, to macarons, to entire crafted cakes, Sucré’s website displays her menu with instructions on ordering from her cottage kitchen.
Hernandez hints at a super special box for Valentine’s Day, as well as miniature assortments “that can be gifted to teachers, friends, classmates … a secret crush, perhaps?”

It’s not unusual to see a fire engine take part in parades today, lights flashing, with firefighters waving to onlookers. In early Corpus Christi, the firefighters were the main attraction of the parade, and the community gathered to show its support. Instead of flashing lights, there were dress uniforms and vehicles adorned in oleanders.
After a fire burned the home of William L. Rogers in 1871, he set out to gather support for organizing a volunteer fire company. By the end of the year, they had a small fire engine and a list of volunteers. The next year, they held a parade, ball, and banquet to fund a headquarters for their new Pioneer No. 1 Company. Another was held to celebrate the first anniversary of the company’s founding, and the firemen’s parade became a Corpus Christi tradition.
Through the support of citizens and the City, money was raised to buy their equipment and a bell to hang in Market Hall (present day La Retama Park) to summon volunteers to a fire. The volunteer force grew to include the Lone Star Hook and Ladder Company, which joined the Pioneer company to create the Corpus Christi Fire Department in 1874.
The support given to these early firefighters – all volunteers until 1913 – helped grow and professionalize the organization into the Corpus Christi Fire Department we know today.
