For this year's HER feature, we made it a point to include as many women in the production team as possible. The experience lent itself to some of our favorite photos we've ever published. The cover features one of our six HER 2020 honorees, Caitlin Chupe. Photographer Lillian Reitz beautifully double exposed this image with a photo of the florals styled and provided by Iuliia Prokhorova of Wild Veggie Bouquet to create a unique and conceptual cover, showing off the beauty and power within every woman. WITHOUT WOMEN LIKEYOU
Back in August, while putting together this issue, I received an email that seemed – scoff if you must – unequivocally an act of fate. You know the kind; when something happens much too conveniently for it to be chalked up to simple coincidence. The email was from a woman you’ll actually meet within these very pages this month, and to my surprise, she was thanking me.
A whole year has now passed since our inaugural HER issue and corresponding event. Brianna Davis, sender of the aforementioned thank-you email, attended our HER 2019 event. That night at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, engulfed in a powerful female aura moving through the room like its own unique form of kinetic energy, Davis made a decision. The experience gave her the confidence she needed to start a nonprofit she’d been passionately dreaming of – and the connections she made that night proved pivotal in her organization’s success. She, verbatim, thanked us for putting together a concept that ultimately changed her life.
When preparing to write this, I decided to reread what our Vice President Kaley Regas (a powerful woman I not only am honored to work with, but go through life with) wrote in her letter for last year’s Women’s Issue. Because it served as our introduction to HER, she spoke to the intended purpose of HER: Honoring, Empowering, and Raising Up Women of The Coastal Bend. She wrote about the importance of embodying the words HER stands for in every step of this process, how HER would serve as a way to cultivate community, and to unite all women in the Coastal Bend in sisterhood.
When reading the email from Davis, I couldn’t help but cry. I’m talking ugly, need-to-come-up-for-air crying. Not solely because of the kind words she shared, but because the way she described her experience and what it brought to her life was exactly what we set out to do when creating HER: to uplift the women in our community and embolden them to chase down their goals with might.
This year, we made it a point to include as many local women as possible in the production of the epic endeavor that is HER. From the photographer to the set design to our glam team, an incredible bunch of women had a hand in creating the extraordinary magic you’ll find beginning on page 32. We simply would not have been able to create such a beautiful issue without each and every one of them. We’re honored to have worked alongside their expertise and talent.
It’s quite a remarkable thing to be inundated with the thoughts, inspirations, and words of wisdom of six different fearless community leaders. When speaking with the women we are honoring this year, I was able to take away something so special from each. Much like Davis felt after leaving the event last year, a new sense of inspiration was instilled in me when leaving our shoot day. My hope, as you navigate this year’s feature, is that you too will finish feeling as though you are capable of following your dreams, whatever they may be. Because without women like them, without women like you, we wouldn’t have extraordinary stories to tell.
So, here’s to every woman in the Coastal Bend changing the landscape and enhancing our community. Here’s to the countless roles you each play in creating a world we wish to live in. Here’s to the sacrifices you’ve made in the name of the greater good. This one’s for you.

A CORPUS NONPROFIT WHOSE MISSION IS TO HELP ALWAYS, IN ALL WAYS
BY: ALEXIS HARBORTH PHOTOS BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES
It was a leap of faith. Brianna Davis had been working in forensic mental health, but she felt pulled in another direction.
“I had this overwhelming feeling every day,” Davis explains. “I had a feeling that I could be doing more. I decided it’s now or never – and it was the now. So I went in to work and gave my two weeks’ notice.”
She spent the next month planning her passion project, a nonprofit that launched in January 2020. Esperanza de Tejas – Hope of Texas – strives to provide help wherever it’s needed. Whereas some organizations exist with a focused purpose or to serve a certain group, Esperanza de Tejas is fluid – providing different types of support to anyone in need.
The 501c3 organization is dedicated to enhancing access to health care, hygiene products and supplies, education and skills, healthy food, and more. Within weeks of their launch, the COVID-19 pandemic hit – but the group was not deterred. True to their mission, they pivoted to provide assistance where people needed it, even if it meant coming to their doorsteps. Recently, Esperanza de Tejas aided a homebound elderly couple by delivering necessities right to their home.
How You Can Help:
Volunteers and donations are vital to ensure that Esperanza de Tejas can continue helping our community. To learn more or get involved, contact (361) 445-4697 or HOPE@esperanzadetejas.org.
Esperanza de Tejas lives out its goals through several programs and initiatives. Its food pantry is called Mercadito Esperanza. As Davis says, “Everyone deserves proper nutrition and nourishment for their bodies.”
Davis explains the Helping Hands outreach, which is all about providing basics and necessities. “We host pop-ups to provide needed items. We just did several where we handed out hygiene bags, containing masks and hand sanitizer, all free of charge.”
The group also provides emergency aid and items after crises, such as fires and hurricanes, to ensure people have food and clothing.
Its mentoring initiative is lived out in several ways, including a podcast called Cafe con Esperanza that covers important subjects and emerging topics.
Education is a crucial focus area. Esperanza de Tejas is in area schools to supply items the school counselors have identified as necessary so students can focus on their education. Soon, they will be launching an after-school program and virtual ACT prep classes.
Also, there is Operation HOPE, which addresses community needs and brings people together. “We get together for clean-ups, holiday drives, and more.”
Esperanza de Tejas is a groundbreaking organization that seeks to fill gaps in the community, doing everything it can for anyone in need. Such a herculean task is accomplished thanks to a strong, pioneering spirit and dedicated individuals. “We have a ‘do whatever it takes’ attitude doing everything we can to help,” says Davis. “And if we can’t help, we will direct them to someone who can.”
The group currently services Nueces and Harris counties – but just like its name, its focus is much bigger. “Our long-term goal is to provide hope all around Texas,” Davis says. “We want to make sure everyone, all around, no matter your race, gender, socioeconomic status, sexual identity, whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever you need, we just want to help.”

MEET THE EXTRAORDINARY WOMAN BEHIND A LOCAL SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING FIRM CONVERSATION BY:
KYLIE COOPER PHOTOS BY: LILLIAN REITZ
WHAT EXACTLY IS ESV CREATIVE?
ESV Creative is a full-service social media marketing firm geared toward empowering small businesses to elevate their online presence and guide them toward being not just popular, but profitable in the process.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THIS BUSINESS?
Helping people has always been at the heart of who I am. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a geneticist and even majored in premed in college. Digital communications was something I fell into. Total plot twist. After working in digital marketing for over a decade, starting my firm was the natural progression to put my expertise to good use by helping other business owners feel less overwhelmed when it comes to social media.
WERE THERE ANY DOUBTS ABOUT STARTING ESV CREATIVE & IF SO, HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I think it’s natural to have a little bit of doubt when you take the leap from a steady job and benefits to starting a business. For me, it was no different. Luckily, I had already taken on a couple of clients outside of my normal 9-5 job, so I had a decent cushion to make my leap. Now here I am, over three years into owning my firm, and I couldn’t imagine it any other way.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?
The relationships I’ve built with my clients and seeing their social media successes (big and little). We’ve all become a little social media family, and that’s precisely how I want every new client or ESV Insider to feel. I am here for them always.
WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO SEE A WOMAN IN A LEADERSHIP ROLE SUCH AS OWNING HER OWN BUSINESS?
As cliche as it may sound, we are modeling for our children (boys and girls) what their lives could be like one day. I’d like to think that when our kids grow up, women in leadership positions will be the norm. I pray they won’t know anything different than the hustle and heart they’ve seen me and other women put into their lives at home and in business. I know so many people say the “future is female” but I’d argue we’re already living in that era of female empowerment and breaking all the molds of our traditional roles right now.
AS A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER YOURSELF, WHAT ABOUT HELPING OTHER SMALL AND LOCAL BUSINESSES IS SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Small businesses are the heart of our city. We’re the ones sponsoring tee-ball games and cheer camps, helping our local
community causes, and we love our city as much as our neighbor. This is why every card or client gift I mail or product I have made is from Corpus Christi. We have so many talented designers and locally owned businesses in this city. They deserve our love and support.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS?
Oh boy! Now that’s a question! I could literally write a novel’s worth of answers here. But here's three:
Keep social social. The worst thing you can do is post and ghost. Reply to comments, comment on other accounts, engage with people’s stories, send direct messages. At the end of the day, people are looking for connection, not your latest announcement. Engaging with others is paramount to building brand awareness and loyalty. You don’t have to be on 24/7; but even 10 minutes a day will make a world of difference.
Be consistent. I cannot stress this enough. It’s time for everyone to get it out of their head that they aren’t successful at social unless they post every single day. You won’t get dinged by the algorithm gods. What will hurt your brand awareness, however, is not being consistent. Only have time for 2 posts a week? That’s okay! Just make sure you pick two days that work for you and keep trucking along.
#Hashtags, y’all. If you are on Instagram, hashtags should be one of your BFFs. For posts you’re allowed 30, for stories 10. Not sure which ones to use? That’s where we come in. Our ESV Insiders have full access to our hashtag vault filled with over 50 categories of hashtags proven to perform. For non-members, we offer a “30 niche hashtags for your industry” service on our website. Once you have them, use them! Every post, every time. Max those babies out.

caitlin chupe
I first met Caitlin Chupe two years ago when we co-chaired a committee for the Art Museum of South Texas. She was the brains of our dynamic duo, I was the idea woman. Anyone who works with numbers for a living is like a unicorn in my book – a mythical creature which I do not understand, but find fascinating nonetheless. Hearing Chupe talk about her work will have even the most rightbrained person ready for a sudoku puzzle.
Chupe currently serves as an audit shareholder at Collier, Johnson & Woods, PC. At 32 years old, Chupe is one of the youngest female shareholders in the company’s history. Mind you, the world of accounting is a relatively male-dominated one, and with her leadership role Chupe has made it a point to create opportunities for more women to succeed in the field. And where she leads, others follow. She has this innate ability to rally people to not only believe in the work she’s doing, but believe in themselves, too.
When I ask Chupe what advice she’d give to young women just finding their full potential, she is undoubtedly speaking to her younger self. Her biggest advice? To say yes. Whatever the position or opportunity at hand might be, to say no because you’re unsure of your capabilities is allowing yourself to fail before even trying. She thinks back to the moment she was asked to become a shareholder and remembers her first thought being that she wasn’t ready. Obviously, she ultimately decided to take it, but it took someone outside herself to show her just how real her abilities and talents were, and how she undoubtedly could take on the position and succeed. So from there, the often overwhelming, yet extremely fulfilling role of audit shareholder began for Chupe and she hasn’t stopped since.
Not only has Chupe worked her way to the top of her firm, she’s made pulling others up along with her an integral part of her journey. For example, Chupe, with the help of another female shareholder, worked to implement a new system for the company that would encourage working mothers to get back into the office. Said system wasn’t in place when Chupe had her own child, and she made it a priority to help create a future in which young female professionals felt supported by the company when starting their own families. That’s the thing about Caitlin Chupe: Sure, she’s an industry leader because she’s at the top of her field, but even more than that it’s because for her, being at the top means making room at the table for others to sit there with her.
What advice would you give women who are looking to break the glass ceiling in the field of accounting?
First, get over your fear of failing. You will make mistakes and you’ll learn from each and every one. Also, do things that scare you or make you uncomfortable. Make everyone else’s job easier by picking up tasks – the more things you pick up the more you’ll learn and the more the people above you will notice you and need you … and the best advice there is: Put your head down and work hard.
What is the importance of seeing women in leadership roles?
I think the more women there are in leadership roles the more young girls will be able to see themselves in leadership roles. I think the more prevalent it becomes, the more we’ll see other girls envision themselves in a similar role. I think it’s really common for us to not believe in ourselves or our capabilities and it takes seeing someone else in a role or position similar to your goal to give you an added boost of confidence. For some reason, it often takes someone outside of ourselves to show support or belief in us for us to really support and believe in ourselves.
What does being a woman in 2020 mean to you?
I think lately there has been this trend of women really coming together and supporting each other. And that’s been a really interesting shift as opposed to the mindset of there are only so many spots for x and we have to all compete for it. Instead, we’re seeing women lift each other up more and have these moments of, “If I help you reach your goals then I will also get to my goals.” I think that is the most empowering thing about women: that we can lift each other up in that way.
Who is your role model or someone you most hope to emulate?
That would definitely be my grandmother. She is 93 years old now. She was raised by a mom who made a difficult decision to leave her husband and raise eight kids on her own. She only spoke French, so my grandmother didn’t learn English until elementary school. She worked her entire life and raised three incredible daughters. She really taught us that if you roll up your sleeves, you can get a lot done. She’s resilient, she’s independent. She taught us we can do anything a man can do and probably do it even better.
the industry leader in her own words
What does being a woman in 2020 mean to you?
Being a woman now at this age to me means someone who is creating opportunities for herself. That’s something I think I have really learned through experience and time, because 20-year-old Elena was completely different: 41-year-old Elena is a bad ass. I think it means knowing who you are and what you’re worth, the value you bring to this world, and being comfortable in your own skin – and that’s something that has certainly come with age. I believe in the power of women and in the power of unity and the power of sisterhood and I am just so happy to be a small cog in the wheel.
So much of what you do is centered around the concept of supporting local. What do you believe to be the importance of that to be?
The importance is that local matters. This community is small, but has big ideas, and big things are happening. When one grows, we all grow, and I wholeheartedly believe that. Plus, you never know who you are inspiring.
What would you say to young women who are just starting to see their full potential?
It’s something I would tell my younger self: When you have an idea or an itch to do something, just start. Because once you take that leap of faith in starting something, whether it’s starting something new or it’s you deviating from the plan you set out for life like most of us do, just start. Have confidence in that first step you have to take.
What inspires you or motivates you?
You know, I just love making things and I really believe in the power of color. I come from a very colorful cultural background and was inundated with both English and Spanish, different foods, and just colors everywhere. So, I really believe in living a colorful life. My home is super colorful, my business is super colorful. I believe in leaving a mark of not only actual color, but also just being vibrant. I feel like I am a walking box of crayons.
elena flores
If you’ve ever had the pleasure of interacting with Elena Flores in some form or fashion, you’ll understand that she is a bold force to be reckoned with, a guiding light for others to follow, and is without a doubt, whole-heartedly and unapologetically, herself. These are all traits I not only admire about her, but strive to mimic in my own professional and personal endeavors. A lot of you probably do, as well.
Born and raised straddling the border of the U.S. and Mexico in Eagle Pass, Texas, Flores considers representation and sharing the importance of her vibrant culture to be at the cornerstone of everything she does. She came to the Coastal Bend in 2001 for school and completed her BS in Health Science and Psychology and her MS in Community Counseling. Although she’s worked in the social services field ever since, her natural creative itch needed a scratch. Thus, merely as a hobby, her brand Sew Bonita was born in 2014.
Since, Sew Bonita has grown into a nationally recognized brand, an outlet for Flores to share her love of all things colorful and representative of her heritage, and a community-centric market event known as Loca for Local. When Flores first created Loca for Local, the market featured six vendors, all of which were creative friends of hers wanting to embark on their first pop-up experience. That number grew to 11 and then to 36 with food trucks and all, and this year in the midst of a COVID-19 world, her genius mind turned the entire event into a complete virtual and curbside experience. If you ask Flores to describe Loca for Local, she’ll tell you it isn’t just a market, but a movement.
At the root of everything Elena Flores does, you’ll find the utmost belief she has in our community and the creatives who form it. You’ll find a proud Chingona who isn’t afraid to live her life authentically. You’ll find someone who uses her well-earned platform to lift others up. But most notably, at least to me, you’ll find a woman who knows no limits, a woman who will laugh in the face of adversity, a woman who brings such a specific effervescence to this world – one so desperately needed. There’s simply no telling what this woman will do next.
terrie moore
While writing this story, I asked each woman about the importance of seeing women in leadership roles – a question prefaced with the notion that they each possessed such a role in our community. Terrie Moore began her response by saying, “Well, I don’t really see myself as a leader – more a cheerleader.” I smiled, because that is the most true-to-form response for someone like Moore. A champion for community.
Born and raised in Corpus Christi, Moore has a passion for the Coastal Bend running through her blood. Her vintage and modern local boutique Wildflowers has, at its core, always been a place for local makers and creatives to call home. Moore first opened the shop in 2000, and decided to close its doors in order to focus on raising her four children. She made a promise to herself to reopen the shop when the time was right, and when she did, creating a space for others to shine was the top priority.
Moore understands the value behind the experience of someone caring about what you do. When a stranger recognizes your hard work or talent, and even more so wants to pay money for it, a motivating validation sets in. Wildflowers is a place for not just Moore or even the goods she carries to shine, but for a plethora of locals to find their pedestal and stand proudly on it.
While it’s true that the way Moore runs her business is a testament to her status as the loudest fan in the bleachers, the way she simply moves through life is another. Are you a local business that just introduced a new membership program? She’s subscribed to it. Have a new community event experience in the works? She’ll be there. Just announced a new brand you’ve been passionately working on? Chances are she’s already reposted it in her Instagram story.
I remember Moore once sharing with me something she’s always told her kids: “If there is something you feel is lacking in your community, bring it here yourself.” It’s that very mentality I believe to be rousing locals to embark on new ventures and bring fresh ideas to our community. And when they do, Terrie Moore is undoubtedly first in line, ready to cheer you on.
What are the things that keep you up at night?
I don't know if it keeps me up at night, but I do worry about the future of our tradesmen and women. I worry that the brick layer, tile layer, woodworker, furniture builder, painter … doesn't see the real value of their craft; that people stop pursuing their love of working with their hands because society doesn't make those people feel important. Beautifully laid tile is art. A bespoke cabinet can make a room. A gorgeous paint job is everything. Beauty is in the detail and construction – if we want to be surrounded in beauty, we need to value the artist.
What is the why behind what you do?
Giving a platform for other locals and being that cheerleader. That’s really it, that’s the only reason. I had my store about 21 years ago and my kids were little. I had the shop for about one year and I just realized I couldn’t do it. It broke my heart and it was one of the saddest days when I closed the door. I knew one day I would reopen, and so I really look at this as an opportunity to give a space for other moms who might feel the way I felt or other creatives who don’t have a place to sell their work.
It's safe to say you’re one of the Coastal Bend’s biggest supporters. Supporting local is a vital component to both your shop and your daily life. Why is supporting local so important?
I truly believe it's the small, local entrepreneurs that give a city its flavor and spice! Cities that are filled with nothing but chain restaurants or corporate clothing stores are often boring and predictable. It's the small local businesses that bring a very personal experience to shopping or eating. They are the fabric of our city and we must support them!
What would you say to young women who are just starting to see their potential?
Don’t be scared. I think fear sets people up for failure more than lack of talent. Because it really isn’t about how talented you are. You’ll learn stuff and you’ll get better the more you do something, and you’ll grow. That’s just how it is. Anything you do, the more you do it, the better you’ll be. But when you start to fear failure, you think, “Well, I can’t do this because I am not good at it,” and that is when you fail.
the community visionary in her own words
the medical hero in her own words
What are the things that keep you up at night?
Did I do enough? Did I miss something or fail to model or lead in a way that is worthy? In the work I do, as well as what it takes for me to be the best parent I can be, I give it my all. Sometimes so much that there isn’t enough left for me. Not so long ago, I woke up to one of the worst calls of my career. I was set to run Beach to Bay, and I was informed that one of my previous clients, who I had worked with that year, had died by suicide the night before. This individual had moved out of Corpus Christi but was struggling with trauma and mental illness for many years, as well as other life stressors. I was devastated and heartbroken for the family. Nothing could have prepared me for this; not my masters or doctoral program, and definitely not my training. Working with the populations I serve means we will lose people.
What do people need to know about mental health?
Mental health treatment is not just important, it is vital to our health and overall well-being. We must take it seriously and play an active role in order to change the narrative we still see today. Not everyone believes in mental health or supports those who struggle with their mental health. I deal with it every day and that stigma prevents people from getting the help they need. In 2020, people still struggle with being okay, with not being okay.
We must all do our part with our family members, people in our friend circles, and the community we live in. Learn the warning signs that someone may be struggling with a mental illness. For those who are having difficulty, just know it is okay to ask for help. We need more federal and state dollars allocated for mental health services, therefore removing the barriers and allowing easier access in all communities. We are losing our future to a death that can be prevented.
What gives you the most satisfaction, inspiration or joy?
That’s easy: helping others, music, and family. I will always help people whether I work with them professionally or not. I am determined to live my life and use my gifts that God gave me to the best of my ability. When I am looking for inspiration or I need that extra push, I go to my music. I love all genres and music is my medicine. That’s how I wrote my dissertation. Music moves me like no other thing can and I use it in everything I do. When the world gets quiet and I’m struggling to find my joy, it’s my family I need and no one else. Without them I would not be what I am today.
dr. claudia ikonomopoulos
When you hear the words “medical hero,” mental health might not ring the first bell in your mind. However, the importance of the topic is paramount, and is precisely where Dr. Claudia Ikonomopoulos enters the conversation.
As the Mental Health Services supervisor for the Nueces County Juvenile Justice Center and a Licensed Professional Counselor with Coastal Bend Psychological Associates, Dr. Ikonomopoulos certainly has her hands full, yet she wouldn’t have it any other way. Her passion for helping others, especially at-risk populations, started in high school when she joined a mentorship class. That passion fueled the journey that ultimately led her to a Ph.D. in Counselor Education, and is what continues to fan the flame behind her work in our community to this day.
The work Dr. Ikonomopoulos does is not easy, but she knows just how vital it is. More than 90% of the juveniles she serves have some type of mental health diagnosis, and at the end of the day, it’s her job to keep them safe, provide a secure space for them to feel heard, and see each person for who they are as opposed to just the crimes they’ve committed. Because beyond the crime society perhaps will define them by, this is someone’s child, a complicated person with an individual set of thoughts and feelings and often complex trauma. As a counselor, she’s helping these kids become the best possible versions of themselves and advocating for their success along the way.
You’ll find a certain sense of intention behind every word Dr. Ikonomopoulos speaks, and more importantly, behind her silence. I suppose it comes with the territory, but the way she has mastered the art of listening is remarkable. She reminds us how crucial it is for everyone to have someone simply hear them out.
There is a moment during our interview shoot when I ask Dr. Ikonomopoulos who her role model is. She speaks nostalgically of her late grandmother – of her selflessness and how she’d do anything in her power to help others – and ends the sentiment by saying she hopes to one day be even half the woman her grandmother Grace was. However, to me, sitting next to Dr. Ikonomopoulos and soaking up her powerful presence, it’s clear to see she already is.
stefany schade
I am confident in saying that if you were to ask anyone to describe Stefany Schade in one word, they’d say something synonymous with “altruistic.” She brings an unmatched level of care to the table in all she does, and even when presented with unimaginable challenges, the question of “How can I help?” will always be Schade’s first response.
Schade is the type of person who was president of each extracurricular club she was a part of in high school. Involved in and at the helm of countless nonprofits and organizations over the years, Schade has held a handful of positions all aimed toward lending a hand to our community. Currently, on top of owning her own finance advisory business, TorOso Financial Group (which, by the way, she started at just 27 years old), she also serves as the current president-elect of Junior League of Corpus Christi and the chair of the board of Goodwill Industries of South Texas.
I ask Schade if she ever has a common theme or goal behind her philanthropic endeavors, and she begins to tell me the story of a starfish. If you’re familiar at all with Schade, you might also be familiar with this anecdote. The crux of the tale is that a young woman stumbles upon thousands of starfish on the beach one day, and begins to throw them back into the ocean. An older man sees this good deed take place and points out the sheer volume of starfish means that she couldn’t possibly help each one. The woman responds that if she only even throws back one, it would make all the difference in the world to that singular starfish.
The metaphor here is obvious: Schade understands there is no way for her to help the entire world, or even her entire community for that matter. But if she can make a difference in one person’s life, help change the mindset of even a single being, or provide someone with the necessary resources to obtain a goal, then she has achieved what she set out to do. That’s the obvious takeaway, but a more obscure understanding of the narrative leads me to a different pillar of Schade’s work.
After suffering from a traumatic brain injury in 2015, a new mindset found her. She realized she had too many hands in too many baskets and because of this, wasn’t able to give enough of herself and her efforts to anyone. With this newfound sense of clarity, the number of starfish on the beach suddenly became significantly smaller. She realized the value in finding specific causes you’re passionate about and having the space to make significant impact. And that’s precisely what Schade does. She pours herself into her endeavors and because of this, real help and hope is provided.
Where do you think your passion for giving back and helping others comes from?
Well first, it's the way I was raised. God blessed me in so many ways, and it's just not in my nature to sit around and just be. He has a purpose for me, and I want to do what I can to fulfill that purpose by giving back to my community. Everything I did growing up and the way my parents raised me, that all aided me in what I do today through community involvement. Without those roots, I wouldn’t be who I am today. And then after my accident, I had this pivot moment and I realized there were some things that meant more to me and I needed to focus my efforts on those few things rather than spread myself so thin. I wanted to be able to give my best self to the things I was involved in and truly make a difference. Because that is what is important. I don’t do what I do for the accolades, but I love to see when other people rise up and become better because of something I had a hand in. That is exciting and fuels me.
What advice would you give young women just starting to see their potential?
You know, this is a good question. Well, I am a nerd, like a big nerd, and I would say the best advice I can give someone just starting out is to form some type of action plan. Like actually visualize what you want to accomplish in your mind, and set a goal and set a timeline, and make some type of plan to get there. The plan might not go the exact way you wanted it to; you’ll have to adapt along the way and that’s okay. But you have to visualize what you want to accomplish. I mean literally write it down and then go do it.
What gives you the most satisfaction, inspiration or joy?
Honestly, it's the simple things. You know, like a refrigerated Lindt Lindor truffle, a great cup of bubble coffee, amazing calamari. But truly, it's seeing people who work hard, people who are good and kind, seeing those people succeed and have great things happen to them and for them, that is absolutely pure joy. Seeing my son being proud of himself for learning something new or doing something hard is so absolutely satisfying. Seeing someone that set a goal, accomplish that goal, despite the odds – pure inspiration. Seeing people truly realize their potential, or just simply realize that they have potential, which changes their whole attitude, that is a wonderful, heartwarming moment.
the humanitarian in her own words
Who is your hero or person you most hope to emulate?
My mother, my aunts, a lot of the women in my family. My family was very closeknit and very loving. And my aunts, they were born in the 1800s, quite ahead of their time, but didn't know it. One of my aunts, my father’s sister, ran, was elected, and served as a congresswoman in her eighties. This woman knew no limits, and these are the type of women I grew up with. My mother was the most incredible, giving service person I have ever met. She was my example of what being a servant is. I would love to be like her when I grow up.
What advice would you give to young women who are just starting to see their potential?
You know, fear is something we all experience when a door opens and we are invited to step through that door. But my advice would be to not look at that fear; look at the possibilities. Because the worst thing that can happen is it doesn’t work or you fail, but all that means is you have to start in a new direction. But don’t ever let fear stop you from being and becoming who you were meant to be.
What do you feel is the importance of seeing women in leadership roles?
I think the importance is that it reinforces the fact of equality, that women are just as capable as men. It just hasn’t ever been recognized in centuries past. But we are now being given this opportunity, and we must take it and shine.
What gives you the most satisfaction, inspiration or joy?
I love to be of service to others, I am inspired, and satisfied when I can make a difference in someone’s life. I love to work out; I feel energized, renewed, and joyful after exercising. I love spending time with my family and seeing my grandsons grow and become who they are. And lastly, my dogs make me happy.
beatriz hanson
Food banks have been a vital component of communities around the world for as long as they’ve existed. However, in a year like 2020, their presence is more crucial than ever. Since March, our newsfeeds have been flooded with headlines revolving around the stress being put on this community resource. Our very own Coastal Bend Food Bank is responsible for 55 distribution sites in 11 different counties. Pandemic or not, that’s a lot of mouths to feed, and Beatriz “Bea” Hanson is at the center of it all.
Born and raised in Mexico City, Hanson moved to the States in 1968. She recalls the experience as an isolating one. She knew only Spanish, had left a close-knit family dynamic and a teaching career, and knew practically no one in the Coastal Bend. But Hanson saw possibilities, rather than barriers. Within six months, she had begun to communicate in English and found her first job at the Welfare Office, and from there her love for being a community servant only blossomed.
Being of service to others is a way of life for Hanson. She knows no different. She tells me the various accomplishments of the strong women in her life and how they all centered around the concept of being of service to others. From her aunt, a once 80-year-old congresswoman well ahead of her time, to her mother and her endearing nature, the joy in helping others is imbedded deep.
In 1997, the year Hanson first started at the food bank, they distributed 2.5 million pounds of food a year, had a total of seven employees, and used one old, beat-up van for distributions. This year, they’ve distributed more than 13 million pounds of food, have a total of 48 employees, and use an entire fleet of refrigerated trucks. Beyond the daily task of feeding the community, the food bank also provides a plethora of resources like nutrition education, diabetes management classes, and weekend food for children who depend on school food for a meal.
The reason Bea Hanson is our Woman of the Year goes well beyond the undeniable fact that leading a food bank – always, but especially in a COVID-19 world – is a very real and taxing role to hold. Just as a food bank’s purpose goes well beyond getting food in mouths, Hanson is restoring hope in the hopeless, she’s nourishing souls in need of sustenance, and in a time like this, that’s needed more than ever.

ESCAPE TO WELLNESS
AKASHA YOGA INFLUENCES POSITIVITY THROUGH YOGA, MEDITATION, WELLNESS, AND ELEVATION
BY: JESSIE CHROBOCINSKI PHOTOS BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES
When we think of space, we often interpret the word to mean emptiness or an unoccupied expanse. In the Sanskrit language, the name used to describe "space" or "ether" is Akasha, which expresses concepts derived from Hindu philosophy, "in which air, fire, water, and earth come together as creation," and "what existed before anything else came into being is that which everything will return to."
Akasha Yoga is a sacred studio for the community to unearth courage and self-belief; to come together and grow beyond what we thought possible and fulfill our greatest potential. Created by a passionate and accomplished group of four –Cheryl Lehman, Melissa Macias, Vance Crocker, and his wife, Lynn Crocker – Akasha Yoga was developed to be a tranquil place for the community to gather for yoga, meditation, and much more while striving to reach Akasha.
"As this project started, it just evolved into this beautiful, beautiful process," Cheryl Lehman says energetically. "I don't think we could have done it without each other, just what we all brought to the table from expertise and different aspects of the project in terms of this beautiful masterpiece. We wanted to create something more than just a room to do yoga. It evolved from one small group looking for a place to practice to [the idea that] we can really do something different here in Corpus by bringing something to the community where everybody can find a class that they like."
With overall wellness being the focus, Akasha Yoga offers many options among classes, including Yin, Kundalini, Beginner's Ashtanga, and traditional classes such as Vinyasa, Hatha, and Restorative yoga, along with Pilates, meditation, and healing services such as Reiki and Earthing –a grounding therapy.
The premier yoga studio completes its service with a peaceful, inviting atmosphere for socializing and practice. The open communal space is designed with visitors in mind, from its modern furniture, couches, and large table to the juice bar, where visitors can order a fresh, cold-pressed juice and enjoy the company of others. ISave Your Natural Tooth!
Has your dentist told you that you need root canal treatment?
If so, you’re not alone. Millions of teeth are treated and saved each year with root canal, or endodontic, treatment. Watch our videos at southtexasendo.com to learn more!
nside the tooth, under the white enamel and a hard layer called the dentin, is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, and helps to grow the root of your tooth during development. In a fully developed tooth, the tooth can survive without the pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it. Contrary to jokes about the matter, modern endodontic treatment is very similar to having a routine filling and usually can be completed in one or two appointments, depending on the condition of your tooth and your personal circumstances. You can expect a comfortable experience during and after your appointment. We also provide nitrous, oral and IV sedation for the anxious patient.
If you are given a choice between root canal treatment or tooth extraction, always choose root canal treatment. Dentistry has yet to produce a denture, bridge or implant that looks, feels and functions as well as a natural tooth. Never choose extraction because you think it will be quicker! Endodontic treatments generally require one to two visits lasting less than an hour each. An extraction requires one visit, but the denture, bridge or implant will require several additional visits with your dentist. Never choose extraction because you think it will be cheaper! When a natural tooth is extracted, it must be replaced with an artificial tooth to prevent other teeth from shifting, and to prevent future dental problems. The cost of a denture, bridge or implant, plus the extraction, often is higher than the cost of an endodontic procedure that would save the tooth for years to come. Most dental insurance plans cover endodontic treatment.

Saving the natural tooth with root canal treatment has many advantages such as:
• Efficient chewing
• Protects other teeth from excessive wear or strain
• Natural appearance
• Normal biting force and sensation so you can continue to eat your favorite foods
• Limits the need for costlier, ongoing dental work

spacious studio allows for Akasha Yoga to continue observing social distancing guidelines by extending classes with limited capacity, spacing students 6 feet apart, and providing sanitized yoga props such as mats and blocks.
"We've got a little bit of everything. Not one thing works for every single person; where yoga is great for one but is better for another. We've got everything here so people can find what they need in one place," Lehman says.
To further emphasize the uniqueness of Akasha Yoga, the studio is dedicated to researching the scope of wellness activities' health benefits. With two physicians as part of the team, the studio is able to conduct before and after studies with yoga, grounding, meditation, and sound experience.
"It's going to be amazing to see the breadth of health benefits. A lot has been studied, but not all of it has been studied like this," Lehman says with excitement. "It's really what sets us apart. We're kind of like the wellness umbrella, if you will."
Whether your passion is yoga or searching for purpose deep within, Akasha Yoga embodies a wellness sanctuary and influences positivity through yoga, meditation, wellness, and elevation. From your first steps inside, the positive energy you feel, from the soft lighting and soothing sound system to the calming colors and wood floor, is likely to make you feel that you’re in the right space.

CLARISSA SERNA ACHIEVES FLAWLESS SKIN
BY: CLARISSA SERNA
PHOTOS BY: LILLIAN REITZ
Since the age of 16 I have always worked multiple jobs at any given time. One of those "jobs" has always been singing and performing which means hundreds of long work days followed by late nights with a full face of makeup and a lot of energy. I'll admit that back then, the quality of my skin wasn't much of a priority. Most of the time my night routine was a face wipe, and that was on a good day. It wasn't until my mid 20s when I started to really think about how to care for my skin and prolong its...uhm...youthfulness?
With everything we see being cut, cropped, and photoshopped it's hard to feel confident with what you've got, but please remember this: Beauty is all of you, your confidence, perseverance, humility and values, every obstacle you've overcome and every miracle you have manifested into this world. Beauty is on the inside. It radiates through you. Beauty is aesthetic and it is interpreted uniquely through every single one of us.
Like many of you, my life is insanely busy, stressful, and overwhelming at times. My approach to managing this is to take life in strides, conquering one obstacle at a time and allowing space to enjoy my loved ones and express gratitude for all of these blessings. Self-care is important and it can be difficult to find balance in a world that is so fast paced. Although my workout routine has changed drastically since my younger years, I still keep it on my priority list as a staple in maintaining mental and physical health. As much as we all appreciate great skin and a tight booty, I believe that inner beauty is most important. The way we treat one another, inspire and lift others up is most important to the legacy we leave behind. As I move into an even busier chapter in my life, renovating and moving into our first home and growing our family, I will strive to keep self-care as a priority and to love myself and my body through all of its seasons.
Lubriderm Advanced Therapy Lotion
Keeping your skin moisturized is crucial. As we age, we lose the collagen in our skin and things begin to sag, discolor, and wrinkle. And while that’s okay, there are a few things we can do to slow down that process. In addition to drinking as much water as humanly possible on a daily basis, I've retired the super scented Bath and Body works and added this skin focused moisture routine. Immediately after the shower I apply this lotion. It's enriched with vitamins E and B5 and doesn't leave a greasy feel. Remember to apply every night to hands and feet. It is a total game changer.

Elta MD UV Elements Broad Spectrum SPF 44
I LIVE for this product! Thanks to J-Lo I have made SPF a priority. I've tried countless brands of SPF products for the face and would break out or have this weird white film left over. This tinted moisturizing sunscreen is so gentle. It also contains hyaluronic acid (a skin care must-have), zinc oxide, UVA/UVB protection and the perfect amount of tint for my liking. YOU MUST WEAR SUN SCREEN IN SOUTH TEXAS!

MAC Mineralized Powder
I worked at MAC for 6 years and was elated when they released this product. Its formula has only gotten better over the years. It melts to the skin, looks natural and has great coverage. Because it's mineralized, it's perfect for setting makeup and can be used wet or dry.

CBD + Nature Radiant Face
This product is a cannabidiol infused serum with botanical and essential oils. Its lengthy list of natural ingredients claim to help all skin types, but especially those with rosacea, oily skin, and scars. It's become a staple in my nighttime routine. It absorbs well into my skin after a shower and moisturizes without leaving an oily feel. I'm going to keep this one around for a while.

I honestly don't even know how many years I've had this curler which says a lot. Remember to always curl at the base, middle, and tip of naked lashes and don’t squeeze too hard.

Shiseido Benefiance Wrinkle Smoothing Eye Cream
I've gone through a handful of eye creams since my skin care journey began and this is one I keep coming back to. A little bit goes a long way. This cream is ultra-moisturizing, but doesn't interfere with makeup application. Check out the key ingredients if you really want your mind blown. For me it's about results and whatever mukurossi and gambir are...they're keeping my eyes looking fresh for TV and confident in my own skin!
Available at Sephora
Shiseido Wrinkle Resist 24 Day Emulsion
This day cream is lightweight and quickly absorbs into the skin. I love the fragrance of the product as well. I appreciate the SPF although I have that covered with my Elta MD. It just makes my skin feel good and comes in a pretty large serving.
Available at Sephora
Cerave Vitamin C
I can appreciate a good over-the-counter skin care product and brands like Cerave and Lubriderm always deliver. Vitamin C is another essential for brightening and protecting the skin. This is a lightweight serum that has all the bang for bucks and a little bit goes a long way.

Every girl knows that the real holy grail for good lashes is finding the perfect combo of mascaras that harmoniously join forces to give you the most bodacious lash achievable. We all look for something that doesn't flake and helps keep the lashes curled. Here is my magic combo. Start with the Falsies and Finish with Colossal. They both have curved brushes which I feel enhances the curl and helps comb through your lashes with ease. Both are pretty water-resistant and leave a beautiful soft lash.

Good Lashes
If you're still reading this, you deserve a treat. Here ya go: Babe Lash and Lash Boost Lash Growth Serum have been game changers for my lashes. They do leave your eyes a bit dry and itchy when you first wake up, but the double natural lash volume is totally worth it. Use it religiously and you'll get results. You're welcome.

Notepad
Last but certainly not least: the notepad. Cell phones are cool but for me there's something about writing things down that really changes the way I process thoughts and emotions. Although I don't journal as much as I'd like to, I do love pouring my heart out in lyrics when I'm feeling some type of way. I also enjoy making to-do lists and the gratification of crossing things off when I’m finished. I jot down inspiration and notes that are meaningful every time I come across them even if it’s years later...almost like a time machine. Plus the screen won't crack if you drop it so that’s cool.

MEDICAL SPA
Reputation for Innovation
Welcome to Halcyon Med Spa
Halcyon Med Spa has a reputation for innovation. They were the first medical spa to introduce treatments like Emsculpt and Pico Genesis and now they’re debuting a totally new technology to Corpus Christi, Aquagold® Fine Touch.
Dr. Katie Boyle joined the medical team this year and introduced Aquagold to the menu, making Halcyon Med Spa the first and only location in the Coastal Bend to offer this treatment. What makes Aquagold unique is the ability to micro-inject a drug or HA filler just under the dermis at a consistent depth.
This single-use device consists of a reservoir to hold a therapeutic “cocktail” and twenty gold-plated, surgicalgrade needles that infuse the liquids into the skin. Each needle contains miniature spiral grooves and is smaller than a human hair, allowing ingredients to penetrate without injury.
Aquagold is ideal for: Fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, decreased skin elasticity, and loss of facial volume. Unlike deeper injections, this treatment won't affect muscles that cause wrinkling or plump deep facial folds.
RADIANT FACE
Cannabidiol-infused serum infused with botanicals like neroli diminish the appearance of scars. Balance skin while harnessing the anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD.
$65 for 30ml
AQUAGOLD
Get radiant, supple skin with dermal micro-filler by Juvederm or Restylane, shrink pores with micro-Botox. Even delicate under-eye areas.
$600
ZITSTICKA KILLA
Tiny microdarts on this amazing little patch self-dissolve upon application and flood your early-stage pimple with targeted ingredients. Contains 8. $29
Aquagold affects the appearance of the skin, not the action of the muscles. It pairs well with dermal filler injections and it’s an ideal complement to surgical facial rejuvenation.
So what’s in the mix? Botox, or a similar neuromodulator, gently deactivates the arrector pili, a tiny muscle in each pore. Relaxing that muscle minimizes the appearance of large pores.
Next, an HA filler. Juvederm, Versa and Restylane contain hyaluronic acid, a naturally occuring substance that attracts and holds water, giving skin a radiant glow. That’s the coveted “airbrushed effect” that almost entirely eliminates the need for foundation!
For aesthetic patients familiar with microneedling, this is an upgrade to the procedure you already love. The needles are so delicate that they can even be used to treat crepey skin and fine lines around the eyes.

TOTAL TOWNHOUSE
MAXIMIZING FUNCTIONALITY IN A SMALL SPACE THROUGH DESIGN
BY: JACQUELINE GONZALEZ PHOTOS
In January, Shaynaeh and Thurston Thomas received an opportunity to expand their business, Thomas Grae Interior Designs, and made the move to the Coastal Bend from South Carolina. They were unfamiliar with the area, but fell in love with a townhouse in a centralized location that would provide access to many of the wonderful local businesses Corpus Christi has to offer.
As small business owners themselves, Shaynaeh and Thurston were eager to check out the local scene to purchase items for their new home. Unfortunately, with the restrictions set in place due to the pandemic, their ventures were derailed as quickly as they began. Even though they had to source some of their items online, she and Thurston had many great ideas they were ready to implement.
Thanks to their combined talents and expertise, they quickly brought their townhouse to life, using a black and white theme that provided an essential background to incorporate pops of color and cultural design and showcase their personalities. They knew they wanted to incorporate their African culture as well as items from Charleston into their decor, and Shaynaeh got the idea for a linear design on their living room wall that was reminiscent of their African culture. “I wanted contemporary, yet unique,” says Shaynaeh, and this design was the perfect starting point for their intended ambience.
When choosing the wall art, Shaynaeh was looking for something that popped against the black wall, and found two abstract pieces of art featuring a combination of teal, orange, brown, burgundy, and black, which provided the necessary bursts of color. Overlapping both colorful prints is a smaller, simple design with black lines intertwined to resemble the silhouette of a woman. Layering is one of Shaynaeh’s favorite techniques, and the entire layout of the artwork over the linear wall blends in nicely with
the black and white print, and the teal throw pillows on the gray sectional couch situated directly beneath the artwork. Shaynaeh put her own spin on a metal and glass coffee table design by combining a solid black metal table reminiscent of African drums used for dancing with a simpler, wired metal, glass top table overlapping it. These two designs form a unique style with the intended wow factor.
The round wooden table paired with bright orange chairs sitting atop a cowhide rug in the dining room adds another pop of color and style in the dining area while combining different cultural patterns. The Sputnik chandelier is the perfect finishing touch, as it is hung at an angle, creating an optical illusion of cascading bubbles.
The stylish kitchen bears a modern, simple design. The black cabinets with silver handles give the area a sleek appearance, and although keeping a smaller kitchen space free of clutter can be a challenge, Shaynaeh opted for minimal accessories in wood and metal accents to keep her essentials
Top Tips from Thomas Grae Interior Designs
Tip No. 1
Implementing greenery, real or faux, is a great way to incorporate nature into your home.
organized while still adhering to the modern and eclectic design of her home. Wicker baskets that she brought with her from Charleston and a woven bowl overlapping artwork that bears neutral shades of black, taupe, and white were placed atop the cabinets to add cultural flair to the kitchen area.
The window above the sink has a great stream of natural lighting, and instead of choosing a curtain to cover it, they chose to accessorize it by adding a valance made from a black and brown animal print fabric purchased at Heirloom Elegance to add character to the space. The light shining through this window highlights all the cultural accents, greenery, and pops of color in their home, but it also provides a gracious view of the outdoor patio.
Finding the right seating, lighting, and décor for a small patio can be challenging, but fun. Shaynaeh and Thurston created the perfect functional space to enjoy some family time on a radiant, sunny day. The fenced-in area features a dark wicker sectional with off-white cushions to provide comfy seating, while a matching umbrella gives the right amount of shade while still allowing for ample sunlight. The throw pillows in tribal patterns are the perfect accessory to mirror the African culture in the home, while the bright green and flamingo print pays homage to South Texas coastal flair. As an added measure, a string of Edison bulbs hangs around the umbrella to provide elegant, relaxing lighting during the evening and nighttime.
For most of us, decorating a smaller space would be quite the undertaking, but this power couple’s incredible design talents allowed them to produce an eclectic space that is comfortable yet stylish.
Finally, It’s Fall…. At least the South Texas version of it! We’ve all survived the dog days of summer and can now look forward to those cooler months ahead. It’s time to get outside and enjoy all the “Great Outdoors” that the Coastal Bend has to offer.
And, one of the major benefits of living in a Braselton Home, in a Braselton Neighborhood, is the access to the Great Outdoors. From your home’s outdoor patio to your Neighborhood’s Common Areas and Open Spaces, we plan and design homes with the act of enjoying the outdoors in mind. Whether it’s walking, hiking, or biking the neighborhood’s sidewalks and trails, taking the kids to a nearby community park and playground, or just enjoying views of local nature, we strive to add value to your living experience.
Our Rancho Vista neighborhood, Corpus Christi’s only master-planned new home community, features a 1 ½ acre central park, with a large kid’s playground sandwiched between our 2 community lakes. With a beautiful front entry, Rancho Vista’s landscaped boulevards feed into its walking path and park trail system. That system winds throughout the neighborhood, eventually connecting to large city parks on Oso Creek and Bill Witt Park. Rancho Vista provides not only beautiful vistas, but also a great way to enjoy Mother Nature.
As you can see, in Braselton Communities we’ve placed a great deal of emphasis on beautiful, shared outdoor spaces, for a number of reasons. First and foremost, in order to turn a neighborhood into a community,
neighbors should spend time interacting with each other; our parks, playgrounds, hiking and biking trails, and nature walks give our homeowners the space to do just that. Whether it’s taking the kids for a bike ride or the dog for a walk, being out in your community makes it easy to love where you live. Shared outdoor space is also great for our homeowners – allowing you to enjoy the parks and landscaped outdoor spaces without the challenge of maintaining them. This makes it much easier to enjoy our outdoors.
Creative design and planning have led to beautiful and effective design both in the home and in the surrounding neighborhood. My family has spent decades touring some of the best communities in the country in order to find the key aspects of master-planned communities that would work best for our hometown. Access to beautiful parks, trails, play areas and water features are integral parts of that special outdoor landscape help turn a subdivision into a community
We would love to have you visit us at a Braselton Neighborhood yourself and see the homes we have to offer. We have furnished Model Homes, all around the Corpus Christi Bay Area. Whether you’re looking for a house in the $180s or the $460s, we have a Braselton Home for you. For more information and directions, please visit us at Braseltonhomes.com.
It’s a great time of the year to get outside, so I hope to...

GROWING UP
PROFILING
Grows easily from seed, but best planted as transplant immediately after Feb. 15 (the average last frost date). Plant in fall through October. Loves heat, dies in first frost (around mid-December). Space basil 12” to 18” according to variety. Plant in well-drained, heavily composted soil. Basil loves heat, but needs afternoon shade in summer. Keep soil moist; water deeply when top inch or two dries out. No fertilizer necessary if soil is well-composted. No pesticides required.
When plant reaches 6” to 8”, prune regularly by pinching top four leaves from each stalk. This stimulates leaf growth to create a bushy rather than leggy plant. Prune often, but never take more than 2/3 of plant (it quickly regrows). Pinch all flowers immediately; full flowering plant stops growing. In late summer, flower growth is inevitable. Use flowers in food or as a gorgeous garnish. Store basil for winter by freezing the leaves in olive oil.
The Queen of Kitchen Herbs
BY: JUSTIN BUTTS
Basil is the queen of kitchen herbs. It has been the most popular herb in history since its first cultivation in India more than 5,000 years ago, and spread early throughout Asia and Africa, where locally cherished varieties have long been cultivated.
Here are a few favorite varieties for a Coastal Bend garden:
Sweet Basil
The true basil; most common. Basil quickly loses its flavor in the cooking process, so add fresh basil at the very end to retain flavor. Space 15”.
Thai Basil
More subtle than sweet basil, with overtones of anise and licorice. Retains flavor better under heat of cooking than sweet basil. Space at 12”. Green leaves and stunning purple
Cinnamon Basil
Incredible cinnamon aroma and flavor. Purple flowers. Smaller, more compact variety, space at 12”. Suffers in the heat of our South Texas summers.
Purple Basil
Gorgeous purple leaves and purple/white flowers. Does not take the heat of summer well; needs afternoon shade and a wind break. Wilts quickly after cutting in summer. Subtle basil flavor, pretty rather than tasty.
Lemon Basil
Pungent lemon aroma and flavor. Most powerful of all basil scents. Perfect for fish dishes in summer, when lemons and dill are out of season.
Spicy Globe Basil
Small and compact, space at 10”. Makes a nice edging on a path or at the feet of taller plants. Perfect as an indoor potted plant near a sunny window. Flavor is sharp and spicy, more intense than sweet basil.
Basil
The largest basil variety. Space at 18”. Strong camphor aroma and flavor. Grows tree-like, must clip top four leaves and all flowers often to promote bushy growth. Can grow over 36”.
LOCAL RECS
I love working with basil. It's both distinctive and versatile at the same time. It's especially good with gin, in my experience. I prefer to use it as a complimentary flavor – kind of like a supporting cast member. Not the star, but the show would be different without them. Cucumber, watermelon, lemon, ginger and lots of other flavors benefit from the addition of a little fresh, herbaceous basil.

FUN FACTS
Basil is an ideal companion plant for tomatoes. Basil repels and confuses many pests that attack tomatoes. Plant basil transplants midway between tomato plants in spring or fall tomato planting. African basil is the best variety due to height, followed by sweet basil. Basil competes well for sun with tomato vines early in the season. Then, in hot weather, tomato vines provide much-needed afternoon shade to basil. Many gardeners say that tomatoes planted with basil taste better.

SWOONWORTHY BEDROOM

Bend, making it blissfully fun to stay warm and cozy in bed while binge-watching your favorite shows.
To create a bedroom that will remind you of the most stylish hotel you’ve ever stayed in, I highly suggest you mix and match bedding textiles and incorporate a variety of pillows. On this bed, I have the usual king bed-sized pillows for sleeping, a trio of European-sized (i.e., euro) 26” square pillows, and some smaller decorative throw pillows.
CREATING A BOUTIQUE HOTEL BEDROOM
•
A new duvet cover is a perfect low-risk way to instantly change the look and feel of a bedroom. No paint brush required!
•
Incorporate seasonal throw pillow covers and throw blankets that can be changed out to accent the bed and space as a whole. For fall, I love velvet, moody florals, and leopard print paired together.
•
If you have trouble mixing patterns, I recommend a solid color, a floral/geometric pattern, and a simpler polka dot/ stripe in complementary colors for a curated but eclectic vibe.
•
If you can splurge on bedding, do it on the pillow inserts and the sheets. These are items you’ll be sleeping on, and will appreciate and notice the most.
By adding in the euro pillows, you’re able to add style and function. These larger pillows are great to prop yourself up and support your back while reading or watching TV.
The area above the bed is also a great opportunity to create a decor focal point. I used some lightweight wall moldings painted the same color as my wall to create a large frame above my tufted headboard, adding architectural interest to the room. If you’re a renter, you can still do this by using command strips. Other options include a chic starburst mirror, or a trio of frames with art or photos that you love.

LOTERIA CARDS ARE GETTING A CORPUS CHRISTI FACE LIFT
BY: LUIS ARJONA ILLUSTRATIONS BY: NANCY MILLER
The leaves are changing (metaphorically, at least), the temperature is becoming moderate, and school is back in session – autumn is rolling in. October is almost a season in itself. I have fond memories that surround the excitement of the season: Halloween and the accompanying slate of films on ABC Family, pumpkin patches … and games of Lotería, the popular game of chance renowned in the area due to our Mexican and Latinx heritage. Sold in various themes, cards portray objects or animals widely recognized throughout Mexico. Illustrations on Lotería cards have become culturally iconic.
Nancy Miller is the program coordinator and assistant professor for the graphic design program at Texas A&M UniversityCorpus Christi (TAMU-CC). After a summer residency at Otis College of Art and Design fell through the cracks, Miller used the nebulous timeline set by COVID-19 to explore her "Home Salty Home." Experimenting and conducting quick studies on her new iPad drawing app, Adobe Fresco, Miller honed her craft by expanding on a previous project she had worked on for TAMU-CC: a Corpus-specific Islander Lotería set the graphic design program had developed for the university's 2020 Homecoming in collaboration with assistant professors
Alexandria Canchola, Andrea Hempstead, and her talented students.
Initially, Miller’s goal was simply to practice digital graphics. After a few images, she consulted with her friend, designer, and owner of Made In Corpus Christi, Nikki Riojas. After their charrette, Corpus Christi Lotería came to life. Corpus Christi is a beautiful area, and Miller decided to memorialize the city with her striking illustrations.
Miller admitted the selection process for people, places, and things to be portrayed on the cards was challenging. After extensive research, suggestions, and testing the willingness from the showcased businesses to participate, she curated her final deck – but after seeing how the first round of cards do, there are plans to increase engagement with the public.
“After the first games sell, we may poll followers on social media for ideas on card substitutions in the next game set edition(s). Many businesses have expressed interest in being featured, and we'd love to include them," says Miller.
Even brief interactions manage to illustrate the character behind the mindset of Corpus Christi Lotería. Miller makes a point of showing gratitude to her colleagues, collaborators, and the city she calls home. She expresses immense appreciation to Danielle Galindo, the magic behind their social media, and Grunwald Printing. Miller acknowledges the contributions of her community and colleagues to her development. It shows in the way she speaks about the area with care and exemplifies her endearment through action.
"Many small businesses have been crushed by the COVID-19 crisis,” she says. “I hope that this game will remind people of those great places that we all used to frequent and love, and renew our hope to gather there again soon. Corpus Christi Lotería will elect a different charity to benefit every six months or so, allowing the game to give back to the community by supporting the various missions of organizations that serve it."

THE CLINTON PEABODY SHOW’S LOCAL FLAVOR
CATALYST TO A BUSINESS EMPIRE IN THE MAKING
BY: MONIQUE DENNIS PHOTOS BY: LILLIAN REITZ
Our story begins with food. It all started with the idea of shining a light on the local food trucks and restaurants in Corpus Christi. After sharing that inspiration with his closest confidantes, Jacolby Satterwhite realized a bigger impact could be made, in an even more significant way, by involving the whole community. That allowed for his initial idea to be manifested and evolve into a local hit program: The Clinton-Peabody Show.
Satterwhite is the host of the local live broadcast, but as he likes to highlight, the show would not be as dope as it is today without his team being a driving force in its success. The show spotlights local arts, culture, cuisine, music, and other lifestyle topics in the community.
The Clinton-Peabody Show is named after the street Satterwhite lived on. Growing up in the Hillcrest area, he was influenced and inspired by the culture and history of his community. In 2017, the city began tearing down the Hillcrest neighborhoods to make way for the new Harbor Bridge. Hillcrest, one of the last majority Black and Hispanic neighborhoods left in Corpus Christi, is a sad memory for Northside natives, such as Satterwhite – but it helped fuel his determination to start the show and promote positive representation for Corpus Christi.
“The gratitude is so real that the city stole our neighborhood and we still decide to give back to the city,” Satterwhite says in regard to the show itself.
Satterwhite describes The Clinton-Peabody Show as evolving into a type of directory, giving direct access to the local guests he features on the show. Through the show, the community can find out about businesses, local artists, and restaurants that many people never knew existed. Not only does he want to spotlight the people in his community, but he also brings awareness and attention with a “wave” that he hopes the people can relate to. As an athlete with a basketball
How to Watch: The show can be viewed on Sundays at 6:30 p.m. via Facebook Live on The ClintonPeabody Show Facebook page. You can contact the team on their Facebook page, The Clinton- Peabody Show, for inquires on being a guest, andsponsorships, other showrelated questions.
background as his foundation, Satterwhite relates his community peers to his teammates, and feels that it is his responsibility to place them in positions for them to succeed.
“My goal is to use the show as a platform to bridge the gap between all ethnicities, all cultures and all of the people in my community,” Satterwhite says when asked what he hopes the show brings to our community. “They took our bridge, so I became the bridge!”
But securing guests is not always easy; he said people can be reluctant to record live, and scheduling also plays a major role – we all can relate just to how hectic life can be! As we dive into what takes place behind the scenes, Satterwhite said production is a whole other entanglement of its own. The show is recorded live, which calls for a production team to aid in pulling off a successful broadcast. Satterwhite has a team of five who come together for show content, research, business affiliations, camera operations, and photography…just to name a few roles that his team fulfills.
Aside from the show, Satterwhite runs a basketball training camp in South Texas, called Supreme Training, and is a rapper, community activist, and up-and-coming Coastal Bend entrepreneur; he and his partner sell and market a clothing brand called The WaveGods Supreme. Essentially every facet of Satterwhite’s life comes back to the love he has for this community and he continues to pour that into each of his ventures.

NIGHTS IN MOROCCO
BY: JO ANNE HOWELL
BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES
Keep it Simple
Soft floral stems and flickering candles set the mood throughout the space. Keeping the table décor simple and elegant was key in achieving the overall vibe of the event. Single stems in a variety of vases are an easy way to accomplish this look.
Cozy Up. Keeping with the Moroccan aesthetic of the venue, various elements were added to enhance the already chic and cozy Mediterranean dream of the evening. Leather tufted poufs and over-sized pillows were used for floor seating around communal tables.
parting words
Venue location can make or break your entire event. While the original plan for this wedding made for an outdoor celebration, inclement weather forced us indoors. Yet the setting of the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History saved the day and allowed the theme of Moroccan nights to still be achieved! Always make sure to have a plan B that you still feel reflects the desired theme and feel of the event.
All in the Details. A deep, rich crimson color can be seen throughout the space. Crushed velvet runners and table covers added a fine texture to the setting. Gold-etched designer glassware was used to add a luxury touch and specialty craft cocktails filled them gloriously.
CUISINE
Crescendo Cafe and its menu are unique. The trendy spot offers a blend of Asian-inspired classics with modern American twists. From ice cream treats to ramen burgers, each dish is delish and a must-try.
Beef Wellington
BY: JUSTIN & KAYLA BUTTS PHOTOS BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES
Beef Wellington is an iconic British dish. It also happens to be identical to the French filet de boeuf en croute. To complicate matters, this French dish with a British name was popularized not in England, but in America! So, what’s the story with Beef Wellington?
In the early 1800s, filet de boeuf en croute was a classic French dish served at the tables of the wealthy. The main ingredient, filet, or tenderloin, was the most expensive cut of beef. The rich duxelles (finely chopped mushrooms, shallots, onion, and herbs) and delicate puff pastry made this dish a favorite of the French upper-crust.
Then, in 1815, the British general Sir Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, issued a stunning defeat to Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. According to lore, Wellington’s favorite supper was filet de boeuf en croute. In honor of his great victory, this dish was (supposedly) renamed Beef Wellington.
Here is the problem: There is no corroboration of the Wellington connection, and no mention of Beef Wellington in British cookbooks throughout the 19th century. The first citing of this name does not appear until 1903 in a Chicago newspaper. Beef Wellington was not mentioned again until 1939, this time in a New York City newspaper.
What’s certain is that in 1965, the legendary chef Julia Child, a master of French cuisine, featured Beef Wellington
on her hit American television show, and the dish instantly achieved iconic status. The wives of America, in perfect “Mad Men” style, were soon serving millions of Beef Wellingtons to their upwardly mobile husbands.
Most likely, Beef Wellington was a cultural appropriation, in which the English took the dish from France but changed the name to their own celebrated French-defeating hero. Even more curiously, this may be a double cultural appropriation, where third-party Americans took the delicious dish from France and the cool name from England.
There is no doubt, though, that Beef Wellington is a right proper name for such an elegant dish. It’s absolutely exquisite fare, the height of luxurious dining. You will feel like a British lord when you sit down to this show-stopper.
Be sure not to overcook the tenderloin – keep it rare. You will almost be able to slice this succulent beef with a butter knife. Also, make sure to cook all the moisture from the duxelles to prevent the puff pastry from becoming moist on bottom.
We used prepared puff pastry to shorten prep time and keep the dish simple, something you can make on a weeknight. If you want to go all the way with homemade puff pastry, see our Puff Pastry recipe at thebendmag.com. No matter how you slice this dish, it will likely be the best thing you taste all week!
Beef Wellington
Serves 6-8
PREP TIME: 30 minutes
COOK TIME : 35 minutes
INGREDIENTS:
2 lbs beef tenderloin
Sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp Dijon mustard
2 tsp thyme, chopped
1 package prosciutto
1 sheet puff pastry
1 egg, beaten, with a dash of salt
DUXELLES:
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 shallot, minced (~1/4 cup)
8 oz assorted mushrooms, finely chopped
1/4 cup dry vermouth
11/2tbsp fresh thyme, chopped
SAUCE:
2 tbsp butter
1 shallot, minced
1/2 cup sherry
1 cup beef broth
2 cups heavy cream
2 tsp coarsely ground black pepper
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
4 sprigs fresh thyme
DIRECTIONS :
Preheat oven to 425°F. Place a large cast iron skillet over high heat. Season tenderloin liberally with salt and pepper. Sear loin in olive oil until a brown crust forms, about 60 seconds on each side. Transfer to a plate to cool.
Reduce heat to medium and add butter to the same skillet. Once melted, add shallots and caramelize for 3 minutes, until translucent. Add mushrooms and vermouth and cook an additional 7-10 minutes, until liquid reduces and mostly evaporates. Finish with fresh thyme.
Lay out parchment paper 18” in length on a clean surface. Prepare surface with a sprinkling of all-purpose flour. Roll out puff pastry until large enough to envelop the tenderloin (allow 3” overlap on all sides when loin is in the center of the pastry).
Coat all sides of tenderloin with Dijon mustard and sprinkle with thyme leaves. Spoon duxelles on top of loin and cover with prosciutto. Rotate loin and repeat until completely coated with duxelles and secured with prosciutto.
Transfer to puff pastry and carefully wrap loin in pastry as you would a present, sealing with egg wash and pinching the ends if necessary. Transfer pastry-wrapped loin to an oiled baking sheet with the seam side down. Brush exposed surfaces with egg and score pastry with a decorative pattern using a sharp knife. Bake in preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, until pastry is a deep golden brown.
While Beef Wellington cooks, place the same skillet used before over medium heat. Melt butter and cook shallots until translucent. Deglaze the pan by increasing to high heat, adding sherry, and stirring vigorously to release the flavorful bits from the bottom of the skillet. Continue to boil for 5 minutes, until the sherry has reduced. Add remaining ingredients and reduce to medium-low heat, stirring frequently, another 3-5 minutes, until desired thickness is reached.
To serve, cut Beef Wellington into 3/4-1” slices and drizzle with sauce.
BLENDERS AND BREWS
HEMISPHERES
CAFE SERVES HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS TREATS – POST-WORKOUT OR NOT
BY: EMMA COMERY PHOTO BY: RACHEL BENAVIDES
Like many great stories, the tale of Hemispheres Cafe sprouted from a mutual love of the majestic coffee bean. Dexter Rhines and Joel Torres, coworkers at Corpus Christi Army Depot, each dreamed of opening a coffee shop. Both men of drive, once they realized their mutual goal and upgraded their relationship from coworkers to business partners, nothing was going to get in their way.
After two years of studying, attending classes and conferences, and perfecting their craft, the pair landed a meeting with the Corpus Christi Athletic Club, who agreed to host Rhines and Torres in the cafe space just inside their lobby. With its built-in traffic flow, accommodating staff, and central location, the CCAC has been the perfect home for their cafe.
Hemispheres served its first customer in the midst of a global pandemic, a risky move in terms of timing that is paying off more every day. “Most businesses come in when times are well,” Torres says. “And then when times are hard, they don’t know what to do. So if we can
thrive during these times, it means that when things start picking up, we’ll be a lot more efficient.”
(It’s important to note that you don’t have to be a member at the CCAC to stop by and grab a drink from Hemispheres. Non-members can stop by the cafe or order curbside anytime!)
“We knew coffee wouldn’t be our moneymaker at the gym,” Rhines explains. So they did their research and dedicated themselves to developing the best wellness smoothies in town. “We found an all-natural product from a vendor we believe in and stand by.” Healthy protein powders (that actually taste great, too) and nutrient-rich recipes are all approved by Torres’ young son, their unofficial taste-tester. “If he didn’t like it, it was right off the list,” Torres laughs.
Rhines and Torres (and his son) have built a powerhouse health-conscious menu from the ground up, featuring three levels of smoothies: low-intensity, medium-intensity, and
high-intensity. Each designed to provide the perfect amount of energy restoration and nutrients. Customer favorites include the “I Love Veggies,” a spinach and kale powerhouse that tastes nothing like vegetables, “The Mango Crusher,” “Chocolate Elvis,” and “Cookies and Cream,” which Rhines swears tastes just like ice cream without the guilt. This writer can also attest to the deliciousness of the “Peanut Butter Cup” and “The Caffeinator.”
And although smoothies are their number-one seller by far, Rhines and Torres are pretty proud of their unique coffee blend. As they should be, in our opinion! Working with local roaster Driftwood Coffee, they developed a singular coffee based on Ethiopian and Brazilian roasts, then topped off with a Colombian to smooth it out. Run it through an espresso machine, Keurig, pour over, French press, or cold brew … it’s heaven in any form.
And then there’s the name, Hemispheres – born from the idea that when two different sides come together, they form a better, stronger whole.
“Dexter and I are very different people with politics, religion, values, and how we make decisions,” says Torres. “I think most people never expected us to end up working together. In today’s world, the only thing that sells is extremes. But the fact that we’re able to get along, respect each other’s values … that’s what’s allowed us to take the business to another level. Hemispheres is about incorporating those differences. So every day you’re not just one person, not just one way.”
“We’re like a sailboat and an anchor,” Rhines says. “He’s the sail and I’m the anchor. Joel has plenty of great ideas, and then I hit him with a little bit of reality. We are best friends.”
And together they stay the course, aiming high, helping Corpus Christians stay healthy, happy, and caffeinated … even in the midst of a pandemic.

A TASTEFUL CRESCENDO
FUSION CAFE SINGS ITS OWN TUNE

Cornering the bustle of Staples Street is the aroma of Crescendo Cafe, a fusion restaurant that brings new taste-pairings and spin-offs to its listening (and hungering) audience. Originated in Los Angeles as an ice cream shop, the goal for this sweet spot was to bring its ideas to big Texas. However, when the ball started rolling for its South Texas operation, Crescendo decided to march to its own beat.
Independent and developing its own reputation, the cafe has an aura that is distinctive on its own, and it plans to explore that.
“People come in and look around to see what it’s all about,” says manager Rosanna. “We wanted to keep it family oriented – even young people, which is why we have power outlets for students. We like the idea of people coming in and just enjoying their time here.”
Crescendo’s menu holds unique entrees for those willing to try something new. The blend of Asian-inspired classics with modern American food offered here fits well into our midday lunch daydreams.
The burger ramen speaks for itself. It’s one of the hot items on the menu, and that’s because it’s literally a ramen noodle-bun burger, as in actual noodles shaped into a bun, with a fried egg and special sauce. Crescendo also prepares different styles of ramen, pork katsu dishes, and innovations that include flavors like miso or teriyaki.
One thing that might attract an on-looker seeking variety is the selection of crepes. Your sweet tooth will not go unsatisfied here, and this cafe has about eight explosive flavors for the crepe community.
and inviting environment is
for dining in, however they have takeout options to make eating out even easier for you during these times. Stay up to date with the restaurant by visiting their Facebook page.
“When we partnered with the L.A. company Crescendo for their ice cream, we really liked the name,” Rosanna explains. “Sushi is replacing the nitro treats, but we ended up still keeping the name. We’re planning to become a new spot for sushi.”
The sushi menu rolled out after a temporary pause in business during COVID, but now the restaurant is welcoming guests for dine-in with a line of original rolls. The “Beach Boy,” “Black Mamba,” and “Hyper California” rolls are among many that are just as colorful as they sound.
“We’re going to see where this takes us,” Rosanna says. “We’re going on a year and a half being open, and COVID did take a hard hit, but now we’re open for dine-in, and the sushi menu is out.”
Whether you’re there for the vibes or the sushi, the cafe welcomes all wanderers. Bring someone who’d like to try something new to the spot, where a fusion of flavors is waiting to be combined.

LOOKING BACK
The City's Submarine

It seems logical that a city with a long history with the military would be honored with a military vessel named in its honor. The first was USS Corpus Christi (PF-44), a frigate that commissioned during WWII and served only a few years before it was decommissioned less than a year after the war ended. A helicopter repair ship, USNS Corpus Christi Bay, served from 1965 to 1974.
As the fleet of Los Angeles-class submarines grew in the 1970s and ’80s, they were each named after an American city, and the Navy once again looked to honor Corpus Christi. However, naming a nuclear-powered fast attack submarine Corpus Christi – or “body of Christ” – wasn’t popular with everyone. Arguing that that
name would be more appropriate for a nonlethal vessel, a bill was introduced to the House and the Navy modified the name to City of Corpus Christi (SN-705). The submarine was commissioned Jan. 8, 1983.
The city embraced the honor, and even held an art contest to design the ship’s patch. Crowds gathered to view the submarine’s trip through Corpus Christi Bay, and a lottery was held to issue 4,000 tickets to residents who wanted to tour the vessel. The 361foot, 11-inch sub and its 110 crewmembers returned to visit its namesake city three more times before taking its final voyage to Pearl Harbor, where it was decommissioned in 2016 after 33 years of service.
