DRAWING TO A CLOSE
I
t's been an interesting, challenging but very fulfilling year. As a company The Best You Magazine is now a year old, we have learnt a lot and we feel we have provided some great content with interviews with the likes of Jacquline Gold, Bill Curbishley, Kanya King, Kubi Springer, Richard Bandler, Tim Lovejoy, John Bird and many more. And we are also very lucky to have a great selection of contributors such as Robin Sharma, Jack Canfield, T. Harv Eker, Wayne Dyer, Paul McKenna and others. This issue packed with inspirational and helpful articles, mostly centred around the festive season and being grateful for what you have. But Christmas isn’t the only thing we celebrate in December – it’s also World Aids Day, so a guest contributor from the National Aids Trust tells us about advancements made in HIV/ Aids treatment. We believe in what we do and that’s why now we have partnered up with Magazine
Cloner and Pocket Mags, world leaders in the digital distribution content. Not only that, but we have also decided to take a very big, bold and important step that will hopefully be appreciated by you all and anyone wanting to improve their lives, and that’s the fact that from December 2013 our magazine is free in every platform! That includes Apple, Android, Amazon, as well as on your PC or Mac. That is our Christmas gift to you, and becoming bigger and better is our New Year’s resolution. That’s our plan. What is yours? How do you plan on making 2014 your year? We would love to hear your stories, so please drop us a mail at any time to share them. All the people we have featured in the magazine this year have believed in themselves, no matter what others have told them. And we, as a magazine, have grown and improved because we believe in what we do. So, my final message to you for 2013 is don't let anyone; no news reporter, politician, friend or
family member, tell you what you can or can’t achieve. Have a fantastic Christmas and think big in 2014. See you next year!

INNER YOU
WAYNE W. DYER
It’s true that the Yuletide is a time for giving, but that doesn’t mean giving has to be confined to this time of the year. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer had an experience while in Turkey that changed his attitude to one of gratitude.
MAKE LOVE YOUR HABIT
O
n the recent Hay House Mediterranean cruise, “In the Wake of Our Spiritual Ancestors,” we visited historic sites of the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. One highlight of the trip was a stop at the ruins of Ephesus on the coast of Turkey, where I was scheduled to lecture. I’ll tell you about an experience I had there that

illustrates the importance of our power to choose who we are. That day in Ephesus, there were many tourists in the area and, thus, a long line for the bathroom. Once inside I saw that there was a man handing out little pieces of paper to the people after they washed their hands. My first thought
WAYNE W. DYER
was an immediate throwback to a younger version of myself. “What is this guy doing in this toilet and is he expecting me to give him a tip? I don’t want to have to give someone a tip for just going to the bathroom. I just had to pee. I don’t think I should have to pay for that. I don’t want to have to deal with this. I don’t want to have to look at him. Here’s someone who’s trying to take advantage of me. He wants a coin. I don’t have any coins.” These thoughts flew into my head spontaneously. I took the piece of paper and walked out. I got about ten feet away and then realised what I had done. “Oh my God, who knows what this man’s story is? He has decided to go into a toilet where tourists come and go all day long. (You can’t imagine what it smelled like in there.) And he stands there all day just handing out little pieces of paper perhaps to earn money to feed his family. Who knows what’s going on in his life? And here I am judging him.” Thoughts born of anger, judgment and fear are habitual memes that fill our heads if we let them. Where they came from doesn’t matter. What matters is that we recognise them. There was a time when, after thinking those habitual thoughts, I would correct them and say to myself, “the next time that happens….” But now what I did was take immediate action. I went back into the bathroom. I had a 20-euro note. I reached out and put it into the man’s hand. “God bless you,” I said. “It’s really thoughtful of you to just hand me a piece of paper after I washed my hands.” This is the healing power of divine love as we open ourselves to it. We’ve all developed mental habits of fear, judgment, getting angry at people for no reason, and
In the poor, we find Jesus in his most distressing disguises. – Mother Teresa
INNER YOU
HOW CAN YOU MAKE LOVE YOUR HABIT? Dr. Dyer’s experience that day in Ephesus could’ve gone by unnoticed, and we all block out experiences like this everyday. So here are some tips to make love your habit. Open your eyes. There are people all around us that need our help, so don’t block them out. Of course you can’t give everything to everybody, but be sure to buy the occasional Big Issue, or buy a cold, homeless person a coffee. Remember you manners. You may remember to say thank you to your friend for having you over for dinner, but remember to thank strangers for small kindnesses too, like holding a door open, or saying “bless you” when you sneeze. Do something special. Next time you leave the office for lunch, come back with some biscuits for your colleagues. They will really appreciate the gesture, and it will make them think of you fondly.
BELOW Being charitable makes you feel good as well as the person you are giving to
feeling threatened. With the working out of divine love, we start seeing these habits for what they are; then we start correcting our thoughts. Finally, we start acting on the corrections. We begin to see the unfolding of God in everyone. I slipped that day in Ephesus. The rest of that trip, when I saw people like the man I met, I had more and more of an outpouring of love. I started giving away coins to remind myself how blessed I am to even have a toilet let alone to have someone inside handing me paper. That’s the shift. You decide you are a being
of divine love and every time you have a thought that is not consistent with that assessment of who you are, you correct the thought and then you go back and correct the action. A habit is a habit until you become aware of it. Ask yourself, “Is this how I choose to react to people who are asking me for help?” Choose love over fear until it becomes your habit. JOHN M. GROHOL
There are probably hundreds of different types of theoretical orientations and techniques that therapists use nowadays in the field of psychotherapy. Looking at all the options can become somewhat overwhelming, so John M. Grohol simplifies.
DIFFERENT STROKES
Y
ou, as a consumer of mental health services, want an overview of different approaches to therapy and practice. I will review the main schools of theory and the techniques they utilise in practice. Four schools of theory and therapy will be examined here: Psychodynamic (and psychoanalytic); Cognitivebehavioural (and behavioural); Humanistic (and existential); and Eclectic.
MAIN PICTURE One type of effective therapy is group therapy
a superego (what is typically referred to as your “conscience,” as in, “Your conscience tells you not to smoke!”), and an id (the devil inside us all that says, “Go ahead, what can it hurt?”)
PSYCHODYNAMIC THERAPY
COGNITIVEBEHAVIOURAL THERAPY
This is one of the oldest theories of psychology in which patients are viewed within a model of illness or “what is lacking.” Individuals are seen as being made up from a “dynamic” that begins in early childhood and progresses throughout life. Psychoanalysis emphasises that all adult problems’ roots can be traced back to one’s childhood. Few therapists can afford to practice strict psychoanalysis anymore and it is typically found nowadays only in the hands of psychiatrists, who have spent extraordinary amounts of personal time being analysed themselves and attending a psychoanalytic institute. Most psychodynamic therapists believe in the theoretical constructs of the ego (a mediating sort of force, like a referee),
It is not really fair to lump these two together like this, but I did it anyway. Why? Because I’m trying to save space and time. Cognitive-behavioural theory emphasises the cognitions or thoughts a person has as an explanation as to how people develop and how they sometimes get a mental disorder. Cognitive-behaviourists

faulty thinking and behaviors by educating the person and reinforcing positive experiences that will lead to fundamental changes in the way that person copes.
HUMANISTIC THERAPY
Cognitive-behavioral therapy, in a nutshell, seeks to change a person’s irrational or faulty thinking generally believe in the role of social learning in childhood development, and the ideas of modelling and reinforcement. People’s personalities come from these experiences in which they are involved in critical learning, identification of appropriate (and inappropriate) thoughts and feelings, and imitation of these behaviours, thoughts, and feelings. So, in other words, if your parents act like snooty, uptight individuals all their lives, and treat other people with little dignity or respect, you, as a child, would learn to do much of the same thing. Children learn by observing and imitating. This is social learning theory. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, in a nutshell, seeks to change a person’s irrational or
Responsibility is a key ingredient of this theory, for all humans are responsible for the choices they make in their lives, with regards to their emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. Pretty tough stuff, eh? Yes, it is, because it says, in effect, that no matter what kind of childhood you suffered through, no matter what your life experiences, you are ultimately in charge of how you react to those experiences and how you will feel. No blaming it on the parents here! There are a number of major conflicts that also tend to need attention, according to this theory. These generally involve the struggle between “being” and “nonbeing” (life versus death, accepting parts of yourself, but not other parts, etc.), being authentic versus being “fake” or “fraudulent” in your day-to-day interactions with yourself and others, etc.
INNER YOU
WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES? Psychotherapy doesn’t work for everybody, but there are options out there. These are some of the most popular: Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy. The connection between the neurological processes (“neuro”), language (“linguistic”) and behavioural patterns learned through experience (“programming”) can be changed to achieve specific goals. Hypnotherapy aims to access the deeper parts of people’s minds to help them overcome a wide range of psychological and physical conditions. Acupuncture uses an ancient form of traditional Chinese medicine to help relieve symptoms. It involves inserting very fine needles into key pressure points on the body. The aim is to stimulate these pressure points to regulate the body’s healing process and restore health and energy. Art therapy helps people express difficult thoughts and feelings through creative activities. It requires creativity and imagination, but can be very helpful, especially amongst people who have difficulty communicating.
theory or therapeutic technique that they tend to use more often or fall back on, but they are willing and often use all that are available to them. After all, the key here is to help the patient as quickly and as effectively as possible. Not to pigeon-hole them into some set way of looking at all people, whether it works for them or not. This article has been adapted from http://psychcentral.com/therapy.htm
ECLECTICISM THERAPY Of course I saved the best for last. Some of my colleagues are probably saying, “Hey, eclecticism isn’t a therapy!” I’d say they’re wrong, but I’m too modest and subtle for such an absolute statement. Oh, what the hell, You’re wrong! There are many forms of eclecticism, but for you, the gentle reader, it is not really important to know or understand the differences between them all. It’s a pragmatic approach to therapy, meshing all of the above approaches together to fit the individualistic human being that sits before them for the first time with their particular problem. Eclectics use techniques from all schools of therapy. They may have a favourite

BUCKET LIST
‘TIS THE SEASON
E
verybody has a bucket list, whether it’s on an official, laminated document, or just a few ideas floating around. But at this time of the year, people have pretty specific things they’d like to do, so we’ve put together a festive-themed
bucket list comprised of things to accomplish during the Yuletide. Don’t panic, you don’t have to do them all this year – keep them in mind for future Christmases. Some of them are fun and others are for the good of humankind, so spread them out, but be sure to do a couple this year.
MAKE YOUR OWN MINCE PIES One of the simple joys of Christmas is a cup of mulled wine and a mince pie. Sure, store-bought pies are acceptable, but imagine the delight of your friends and family if you welcomed them to your home with a warm, homemade mince pie. It may sound complicated, but it’s actually really simple. All you need to do is make the short crust pastry, use it to line a muffin tray, fill it with fruit mince (you could make this yourself too, but who has the time?) cover with pastry and bake.
16 | WWW.THEBESTYOUMAGAZINE.CO
Part of enjoying life is living for the moment, so don’t wait until you’re on your deathbed to make a list of what you should’ve done. Life is happening now, so start ticking things off that bucket list.
DO SOME CHARITY WORK We have some ideas on how you can help the less fortunate over the Christmas season scattered throughout the magazine. For example, you could fill a shoebox with goodies for a child in need, which you can find out more about in our We Support feature on page 28. Or you could donate a few hours of your time by volunteering at a soup kitchen or hospital. And if you don’t have the time, you can always donate money to a cause you care about.
BUCKET LIST
HAVE A WHITE CHRISTMAS For those in the Northern Hemisphere, having a white Christmas is rather common. However, there’s a whole other hemisphere full of people who celebrate Christmas in the sunshine. This is nice, but since the media mostly associates Christmas with snow and woolly jumpers, summer Christmases just don’t feel like Christmas. So if you’re in the south, head north one Christmas and see why it’s possible to eat a real Christmas lunch there.
BUY SOMETHING EXTRAVAGANT Imagine the look on your partner or child’s face if you splashed out on something really amazing. We’re not recommending that you get yourself into debt over it, but if you can afford it, why not? The feeling you’ll get from their reaction will totally be worth it. But, extravagance is relative, so it could be a romantic getaway for you and your partner, or a car for your newly licenced teenage daughter.
CHRISTMAS CHURCH SERVICE With all the television adverts and shopping mall Santa Clauses, it’s easy to forget that Christmas is actually a Christian holiday. If you’re a practicing Christian, you probably go to a Christmas Eve service anyway, but if you’re an atheist who enjoys celebrating Christmas, find out about the service at your local church. It’s festive, as well as being educational about the historical meaning of Christmas.
ENJOY LIFE
LEARN A WINTER SPORT If you’re going to make your way to snowy climes, make the most of it. How about learning to ski or snowboard? It’s great fun, and a good way to burn off extra calories from all those Christmas indulgences. And you get to go back to the lodge after a day on the slopes and sip something delicious. And it doesn’t take long to learn. Get an instructor for the first day, and by the second day, swish, swish, swish.
HOST THE CHRISTMAS LUNCH If you usually go to a family member or friend for Christmas lunch, why not have a go at hosting it yourself for a change? It can be a lot of fun, and if you go all out, there’s a great sense of accomplishment. Decorate your home in tinsel and lights and remember the festive place setting. And if you really feel up to it, we refer you to item number one.
MAKE FAMILY CHRISTMAS CARDS Cheesy as they may be, Christmas cards with a portrait of the whole family is something that all your friends and family will love. You can do it properly by going to a photographic studio and getting your family portrait taken professionally, or you can use a candid shot of your family and give it to a card making company. Remember to wear your Christmas jumper!

WE SUPPORT Operation Christmas Child
It’s not too late for people across the country to help send gift filled shoeboxes to disadvantaged children around the world.
O
peration Christmas Child is a global children’s project of Samaritan’s Purse that uses simple gift-filled shoe boxes containing school supplies, toys, necessity items and notes of encouragement to let hurting children know God loves them and they are not forgotten. Over the past 23 years, through Operation Christmas
Child, Samaritan’s Purse has delivered 100 million giftfilled shoeboxes in over 100 countries. While the deadline for dropping off shoeboxes has now passed, people can still take part through Shoebox World – a fun and interactive way to create a shoebox online. It’s a quick and easy way to fill a shoebox gift for a child overseas. This year Shoebox World is compatible across all PC and MAC devices and Tablets. Best of all, Shoeboxes can be created online using any platform, anywhere, from as little as £15, right up until New Year’s Day! People can choose from a great selection of toys, education supplies, hygiene accessories and other items. Samaritan’s Purse volunteers will then place the chosen gifts in decorated shoeboxes
Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts are collected in the UK, United States and many more
and send them for distribution overseas to vulnerable children between two and 14 years of age. Shoeboxes can also include a personalised message and/or a photo for the child receiving their shoebox, a simple thing to do but something that makes each shoebox so special, so memorable. Samaritan’s Purse UK Executive Director Simon Barrington said: “We want to tell children receiving these shoeboxes that, whatever their circumstances, people in the UK do care about them and are thinking about them this Christmas.” Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts are collected in the UK, United States, Canada, Australia, Austria, Finland, Germany, New Zealand and Spain. e all know that they make a great cup of coffee, but Starbucks is also doing great work for humankind, and we don’t just mean giving them a morning caffeine boost. The coffee conglomerate has vowed to help 10,000 war veterans and spouses of active soldiers find work within the company over the next five years. Howard Schultz, Starbucks chairman, president and chief executive officer, said,
“There are more than one million transitioning U.S. veterans and almost one and a half million military spouses. Our missiondriven sensibility can build longterm careers at Starbucks as they return home.” All of the positions available, ranging from management to logistics, require a skill set that Schultz believes these veterans possess. Former Defence Secretary Robert M. Gates said, “They represent one of the most underutilized talent pools in our country.”
RECYCLABLE FESTIVITIES
N
early 30 million of them get bought every year in the United States, and a significant percentage of those get recycled and turned into mulch. It’s been a great success in America, and it’s something we should really try and spread across the world. We’re talking, of course, about
recycling Christmas trees. According to National Christmas Tree Association spokesman Rick Dungey, recycling your Christmas tree in the United States has becomes “easier than ever” over the past few festive seasons. For the city of San Francisco, this will be the 27th year for Christmas tree recycling. Here nearly 600 tonnes
of trees are fed into a giant wood-chipper each year and turned to mulch. New York City’s Department of Sanitation collects about 150,000 trees each year and mulches them in a joint program with the Parks Department. The mulch is used in community gardens. So, let’s make this go global. Find out how to recycle your Christmas tree.

One of the things that gives me most peace is have a clean, simple home. When, on the other hand, I walk out into a living room cluttered with toys and books and extra things all over the place, it is chaos and my mind is frenetic. I’ve been a simplifier and a declutterer for nearly a decade and I’ve gotten pretty good at it, but I’ve found that you have to keep coming back to revisit your clutter every once in awhile.
HERE ARE MY TOP DECLUTTERING TIPS: 1. DO IT IN SMALL CHUNKS. Set aside just 15 minutes to declutter just one shelf, and when that shelf or that 15 minutes is up, celebrate your victory. Then tackle another shelf for 15 minutes the next day. Conquering an entire closet or room can be overwhelming, and you might put it off forever.
2. SET ASIDE A COUPLE HOURS TO DO IT. This contradicts the tip above, but the same decluttering strategy doesn’t work for every mess or for every person. Sometimes, for me, it’s good to set aside part of a morning to declutter a closet
MAIN PICTURE Keep you common living area organised. You never know when guests could stop by
BELOW Keep your wardrobe in check for your own peace of mind
or room. I do it all at once, and when I’m done, it feels awesome.
3. TAKE EVERYTHING OUT OF A SHELF OR DRAWER AT ONCE.
Whichever of the two above strategies you choose, you should focus on one drawer or shelf at a time, and empty it completely. Then clean that shelf or drawer. Then, take the pile, sort it, and put back just what you want to keep. 4. SORT THROUGH YOUR PILE, ONE ITEM AT A TIME, AND MAKE QUICK DECISIONS. Have a trash bag and a giveaway box handy. When you pull everything out of a shelf or drawer, sort through the pile one item at a time. Pick up an item, and make a decision:
THE BEST YOU trash, give away, or keep.
5. BE MERCILESS. You may be a pack rat, but the truth is, you won’t ever use most of the junk you’ve accumulated. If you haven’t used it in the last year, get rid of it. It’s as simple as that.
6. PAPERS? Be merciless, unless it’s important. Magazines, catalogues, junk mail, bills more than a year old, notes to yourself, notes from others, old work stuff … toss it! The only exception is with tax-related stuff, which should be kept for seven years, and other important documents like warranties, birth and death and marriage certificates, insurance, wills, and other important documents like that. But you’ll know those when you see them. Otherwise, toss!
7. CREAT A MAYBE BOX. If you are on the fence with a
ENJOY LIFE
lot of things, create a “maybe” box. If you can’t bear to toss something because you might need it later, put it in the box, then close the box, label it, and put it in storage (garage, attic, closet), out of sight. Most likely, you’ll never open that box again. If that’s the case, pull it out after six months or a year, and toss it or give it away.
8. LOOKING AHEAD Create a system to stop clutter from accumulating. There’s a reason you have tall stacks of papers all over the place, and big piles of toys and books and clothes. It’s because you don’t have a regular system to keep things in their place, and get rid of stuff you don’t need. This is a topic for another day, but it’s something to think about as you declutter. You’ll never get to perfect, but if you think more intelligently about how your house got cluttered, perhaps you can find ways to stop it
from happening again.
9. CELEBRATE!
Create a system to stop clutter from accumulating. There’s a reason you have tall stacks of papers all over the place, and big piles of toys and books and clothes
This is actually a general rule in life: always celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small. Even if you just decluttered one drawer, that’s great. Treat yourself to something delicious. Open that drawer (or closet, or whatever), and admire its simplicity. Breathe deeply and know that you have done a good thing. Bask in your peacefulness. b

LEFT Angelina as a baby with her mother, Marcheline
D
espite the apparent good fortune of being born into Hollywood glamour, Angelina Jolie grew up in a turbulent Hollywood household in which her mother hardly saw her for the first year of her life. It's said that for that year she rarely saw the same person two days in a row and was left by a string of babysitters to stare at the sky in an empty apartment above her mother's home. It was a place so lonely her babysitters nicknamed it the Ivory Tower. In 1971, her mother, Marcia Lynne Bertrand, later Marcheline Voight, had married the young and handsome film star Jon Voight, famous for his role in 1969 film Midnight Cowboy. She was a model and actress. Ostensibly a devout family man, the 37-year-old Jon Voight strayed from Marcheline just as Angelina was born in 1975, falling in with the younger theatrical student Stacey Pickren. Devastated, Angelina's mother told friends she could not bear to look at her new daughter because she reminded her of her unfaithful husband. So, as Marcheline struggled with shock and depression, Angelina's year-long sojourn in the Ivory Tower began. The years that followed were filled with strife. Jon Voight tried to be a good father to Angelina, but at the same time was haunted by his relationship with Pickren, who, as a member of the infamous sex-based cult The Children of God, had opted for an open relationship. The situation took its toll. As Voight put it, "Nobody tells you the cost of free love." Angelina made her first foray into film in the movie "Lookin' To Get Out" in 1982. Starring Jon Voight with Marcheline as his wife and Sandra Pickren as a prostitute, Angelina played the daughter. She was seven years old. With strong tensions at home, by the time she was 13 years old, Angelina was starting to go off the rails. Her mother, always more interested in being her friend than a disciplining influence, let her run wild and take drugs. When Angelina was 14, Marcheline invited Angelina's boyfriend to stay at the house many nights a week, giving up the master bedroom to the two children. Her reasoning was that Angelina was going to have sex anyway, and she felt that it would be safer for her to do so at home rather than in the back seat of a car. Her lax attitude toward her daughter's development meant Angelina had

plenty of time to go to clubs and take drugs, despite her mother's avowed intention of "containing" her at home. As a teenager, Jolie developed anorexia and started cutting herself, often on her inner thighs. An argument with her boyfriend at this time saw them both hospitalised after stabbing each other. It is fair to say that Angelina was lost and confused. After leaving school, she declared she had no interest in acting, and subsequently went into modelling. By the age of 17, this striking young woman was chosen to replace Cindy Crawford as the poster girl for a swimwear brand. Unexpectedly, Jolie turned the job down, deciding instead to go into acting. She refused to use her father's surname, opting to use her middle name to become Angelina Jolie. Impulsive, wild and sexually predatory, Jolie's life was a series of extremes. She took numerous lovers of of either sex and frequently indulged. Those extremes had other, even darker manifestations. At the end of filming for one

COVER STORY THE BEST YOU movie, Jolie fell into a post-filming low and hired a hitman to kill her. She arranged for small amounts of money to leave her account, thus not making him a suspect in her suicide. At their meeting, the hitman advised that she should call him back in a month and if she still felt the same, he would fulfil the contract. She never made the call. In typical impulsive form, Jolie fell in love with English actor, Johnny Lee Miller, immediately after she met him. They were married within six weeks, just as he was finishing filming the classic Irvine Welsh movie, Trainspotting. Within four weeks, she had been unfaithful to him, and within 18 months the marriage was dead. So her life went on through her twenties, swinging between extremes of relationships, heroin addiction and film-making. At the same time, the extremes of her life fed into her acting accomplishments. Jolie won a string of nominations and awards for her screen work, including an Academy Award for best supporting actress in the movie Girl, Interrupted. Jolie tried to find some balance by marrying US actor and musician Billy Bob Thornton in 2000. It was during her marriage to Thornton that she started to turn things around. Her heroin addiction was taking a toll on her looks, and she vowed to stop. She had landed the lead role in the film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, which required her to be fit, focussed and upbeat. Drawing on the poised, controlled character of Croft as an inspiration, and confined by an 11:00pm curfew by the director, she kicked the heroin habit and started to take charge of her life. Filming on location in Cambodia, Jolie's insular filmstar lifestyle came into direct contact with genuine poverty. As Thornton later observed, seeing three people walking down the road, two blind and one without arms, carrying piles of wood back to their village put annoyance at the worn leather on the seat of your sports car into perspective. Returning to the US, she was due to play a wealthy socialite who becomes involved in an African refugee crisis in Beyond Borders. The role spoke to her, and when the film was shelved she decided to approach the UN and find out more about humanitarian crises unfolding around the world. 2001 was an intense period of learning for Jolie. She threw herself into her research, insisting on paying her own way, and being sure to live in the same conditions as the UNHCR workers she travelled with. Some of her research was genuinely dangerous, and her father even tried to prevent her going on one of her fact-finding missions, so concerned was he for her safety. Never one to be put off, Jolie continued to work with the UNHCR, donating large amounts of money and discovering more about those suffering throughout the world.

It was not long before the UNHCR took her on as a goodwill ambassador in 2001. Around this time, Jolie also decided to adopt a child from Cambodia, wishing to give a child the opportunity to grow up with all the advantages of the West. Life wasn't going to be a simple curve for Jolie, and her one-time obsessive relationship with Billy Bob Thornton abruptly foundered in 2002. A new Jolie, was emerging. From here on, her career and her passion for humanitarian causes went hand in hand. Jolie became the most highly paid actress in Hollywood, at the same time as becoming a vocal advocate for the work done by the UNHCR. Working on the film Mr and Mrs Smith in 2005, Jolie met Brad Pitt. Finding that they had so many things in common, Jolie and Pitt got together and by 2006 she was pregnant with his child. It appears that the everrestless Jolie made the right choice as to her partner. Brad Pitt has supported his wife's working endeavours as well as her charitable ones assiduously ever since. What is extraordinary about Jolie is that she brings the same single-minded obsessiveness to everything she does. In her early years this focus caused destructive relationships,

debauchery and self-harm. In later life, that same singlemindedness has been thrown in to something genuinely positive. Alongside her extraordinary acting awards, Jolie has amassed numerous awards for her humanitarian work. From numerous humanitarian awards, a “Citizen of the World" award and an award from the International Rescue Committee in 2007, the list of recognition goes on and on. From the King of Cambodia she received Cambodian citizenship for her work in setting up a nature reserve and funding a Millennium Village in accordance with UN development goals. In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, she funds the Zahara Children's Centre, which treats children suffering from HIV/Aids or TB, and she has built at least 10 schools in Cambodia and numerous other schools throughout the world. Her ceaseless and untiring work has undoubtedly saved lives and improved the lots of many others. It appears that Jolie has connected with something bigger than herself. Her impulsive nature that led her into heroin addiction when younger still continues to shape her actions in many ways - but she has learned to be addicted to things that are good for her – and for others. With three of her own children fathered by Brad Pitt, and three adopted children from around the world, Brad Pitt's joke that they are intending to have a "football team" looks like it might actually be true. Her restless energy is poured into the family and the charitable work she does gaining her accolades from around the world. She is co-chair of the Clinton Global Initiative's Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, which funds education for children affected by disaster, and she also co-chairs Kids In Need of Defense (KIND), providing free legal aid to unaccompanied minors in immigration proceedings across the US. Never long out of the headlines, this year a more personal story surfaced. In a surprise move in response to the death of her mother and other female relatives from cancer, Jolie announced she would have a double mastectomy. Once again her strong-mindedness and her strength of mind fed into that decision. Her life has been extraordinary tale, perhaps worthy of one of the films she has starred in. From someone who was so very lost in her early years, she has become a positive force for good throughout the world. Long may her work continue. b

notice as soon as Perween Warsi sits down that she has a smile that puts me immediately at ease and eyes that twinkle with quick-thinking intelligence. Perween's story of success is an impressive one. From an initial outlay of £2.50 making food on her kitchen table, she went on to become a major food producer in the UK. So, what nourished her confidence and vision to make that happen? "I had the most exciting time as a child," she tells me. Her father was a civil engineer
who was frequently transferred to different parts of India. "It was a headache for my mum because of the packing and unpacking," she says. "But for us it was absolutely great fun." The constant moving taught her three things: "One, learn to make new friends; accept, embrace and enjoy change; and also learn to adapt to new situations." These attitudes were vital to her later business life. Another ingredient lay in having a very close family – parents, five children and maternal grandmother (or

nana), who would always be there for one another. And her nana added another part of the mix – the all-pervasive presence of food. "She was a treasure. She was full of wisdom." A fantastic cook, despite being disabled, Perween recalls: "Every morning her cook would bring all the ingredients to her, the herbs, the spices, whatever and she would spoon it out to make sure that the dishes were absolutely perfect." This obsession with food was passed on to Perween. "So we were a foodie family.

And a very close family as well. And the closeness in family has been our greatest strength... it was a wonderful childhood." Her schooldays also reveal something of the attitude that has guided Perween through life. She was ambitious and keen to improve herself from early on, wanting to learn English from an early age, and dreaming of going to boarding school rather than the local school. Her inspiration she puts down to two particular drives which she defines as "action" and "reaction." The action side is personified by the people who inspired and influenced her. For Perween, these were her parents. "My parents were my heroes," she recalls. She admired her father for his commitment and passion for his work as well as his integrity and commitment to family. She admired her mum for her "daring attitude, speaking her mind and challenging the norm." "They both taught me one thing, and that was just think about others and help others who are not as fortunate as you are. So they were my heroes, they are the ones who inspired me." She was also inspired by her own reaction to the people she saw for whom she felt sorry. "I saw poverty around me. I saw dependent women. I saw
uncut diamonds – that I called them – who had the capability and ability and... were very creative, who were not given the opportunity... I just wanted to be different so I could do something for those people and stand on my own two feet." Perween's opportunity came when she moved to England. Coming from a conservative Muslim background, Perween married her husband by arranged marriage when she was 17. He later travelled to the UK to train as a doctor, and Perween joined him in 1975. She had her first child when she was 19. "I was a young girl who had never been even to a corner shop on my own. And then one day I find myself at the international airport with my one-year-old child in my arms and £3 in my handbag. I was travelling 4,000 plus miles away from Delhi to Heathrow to meet my husband all on my own, no help, no support... And when I came everything was different. There was nothing familiar. The culture, the people, the language. The food." That last became a bugbear for Perween. She settled in thanks to her early experiences of constantly relocating, but the food was a problem. "Missing my family was tough enough, but missing my coriander, my chillies, aubergines all the wonderful fruit was just heartbreaking.

Though she had no plan, she had a vision – seeing the whole nation enjoying her food. She started selling into a local takeaway and deli and then into local shops. But Perween wanted the whole of the UK to taste great Indian food, and that's when she approached the major supermarkets. She made hundreds of calls before Asda agreed to include her offer in a blind taste panel. After weeks of waiting, Asda awarded her the business. Throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s scientists searched for an effective treatment as the number of people acquiring HIV and then dying from AIDSrelated illnesses shot up across the world. A major turning point came in 1997 with the discovery of antiretroviral therapy (ART) drugs. After their introduction, there was a 60-80% decline in rates of AIDS, death, and hospitalisation in the UK. This was a major victory for the activists who had campaigned
and fought to push through medical trials and treatments. Today HIV treatment has become so effective that an HIV positive person, diagnosed and treated in time, can expect to have a normal lifespan. Treatment also has preventive benefits. It reduces the amount of virus in the body and when this happens, the chances of passing HIV on are significantly reduced. The reduction of infectiousness as a result of treatment also prevents motherto-child transmission - in the UK today, almost all women with HIV will give birth to an HIV negative baby. What we know about HIV has improved vastly since the ‘80s when the condition first came to our attention. We now know that HIV is passed

BELOW The Aids virus looks pretty frightening under a microscope
This 1 December is the 25th anniversary of World AIDS Day. Suzi Price, communications manager, NAT (National AIDS Trust), outlines the progress we have made in our scientific understanding of HIV, as well as the challenges that remain in the fight against HIV stigma and discrimination.
SUZI PRICE LIVE LOVE LEGACY life but the few of my colleagues who do know have warned me not to tell others.” A recent survey by IOPS Mori, commissioned by NAT, revealed that one in ten people agree that they do not have much sympathy for people with HIV. In 2010 less people felt comfortable working with a colleague who was HIV positive than in 2007. Adding to this, almost two-fifths of those surveyed believed that they had a right to know if a colleague was HIV positive. Knowing about someone’s HIV status is completely unnecessary as there is no risk of HIV transmission in everyday work situations. Such prejudicial views are examples of how stigma can undermine rights to privacy and confidentiality. It is important to challenge stigmatising views of HIV and to ensure everyone knows the facts about HIV. This World AIDS Day NAT we are asking everyone to learn five facts about living with HIV in the 21st Century, and to pass them on to others. b
To protect yourself and others from HIV always use a condom when having sex.
on through infected bodily fluids such as semen, vaginal fluids, blood, breast milk and rectal secretions. Today the most common ways HIV is transmitted is through sex without a condom and through sharing infected needles, syringes or other injecting drug equipment. To protect yourself and others from HIV always use a condom when having sex. You should also never share needles, syringes or any other injecting equipment. It is recommended that gay men, and those from African communities, have a HIV test at least once a year, and more often if they are changing partners regularly or think they may have put themselves at risk. It is recommended that the general population also test before new partners. So there is lots of good news when it comes to HIV but challenges remain. There are significant numbers of new HIV diagnoses each year. Currently 100,000 people in the UK are living with HIV; this includes one in 20 gay and bi-sexual men and one in 25 black African-born individuals. In the general population the prevalence of HIV is one in 650.
Worryingly, a quarter of people who have HIV don’t know they have it, and half of all people living with HIV are diagnosed late, which means usually having had HIV for at least four years prior to diagnosis. This is something we urgently need to tackle, as we know that around half of new infections are acquired from people who are undiagnosed. Late diagnosed HIV can have a devastating effect on your health, for example the chances of dying in the first year increase 11-fold if you are diagnosed late. People living with HIV are particularly vulnerable to discrimination, as HIV remains a highly stigmatised condition. Research has shown that one in three people diagnosed with HIV have experienced HIVrelated discrimination at some point. Amy (not her real name), who is living with HIV, told NAT: “Stigma and ignorance are for me the main issues around my diagnosis. Living in a rural area where everyone knows everyone, I don’t feel I can risk ‘coming out.’ The fallout could affect not just me but also my child and family. I would love to stop living this double

hen we were used try out as many things as possible, because we naturally wanted to learn how things work. That natural behaviour was soon stopped as we grew up because our parents taught us their view of the world and life and we were encouraged to follow their thoughts. They taught us how to deal with people, how to study, how to get a job, etc. This, with the addition of time, created our personality and our view of things. Unfortunately we also came up with a lot of limiting beliefs against our dreams and growth. Personally I believe that 90 per cent of our thoughts are not validated and are untrue. Take the following five examples:
LIVE LOVE LEGACY
on your physique at any age, you only need to get started.
Fortunately, once we realize that we have a limiting belief, it’s easy to turn it into a positive belief.
l Your brain stops growing at 20 years old. Our brain is extremely malleable and scientists have proven that the brain continues to develop new connections well into old age.
THE PROBLEM WITH LIMITING BELIEFS Let’s make this clear. It’s impossible to live a 100 per cent objective life where you personally validate everything you do or hear. And it might also not be a big deal to know that the Chinese wall can’t be seen from the moon. The problem rises when you believe something that causes you trouble. I call these beliefs limiting beliefs, because they provide no positive value to those who accept them as true. You should be well aware of them, because they are often the cause of our pain.
TURNING LIMITING BELIEFS INTO POSITIVE ONES Fortunately, once we realize that we have a limiting belief, it’s easy to turn it into a positive belief. Take the 95 per cent of business failure as an example. Once we discover that the truth is that only 23 per cent of businesses fail, and some of them are not a real failure, but rather the business was sold or the boss retired, we can easily assume that, almost four chances out of five, your business will succeed. In this particular case you can increase your chances further if you consider your preparation, determination and knowledge.
l 95 per cent of businesses fail within five years. I don’t know who said this at first, but I really believed it was true, until I saw some real statistics. Talking about the US market, only 23 per cent of business close within five years, and we must consider that not all of them are a failure. Some businesses are sold, and some are closed because the boss retired, that’s far from a failure.
There are a few simple steps you can use to turn your limiting beliefs into positive ones:
l You can’t become fit at your age. Some people believe that in order to become physically fit you must be younger. Although youth may help to develop muscles, you can work
① Validate them. Is what you think really true? Try to search for
evidence, or ask around if someone thinks different than you.
of statistic, don’t say that 30 per cent of people don’t pass an exam, but say something like 70 per cent of people pass the exam. Can you see the difference?
a negative belief, see if you can do something about it. If it’s true that you can’t do a side split right now, you can train and improve every day, until you reach your goal.
if everything before didn’t work. At this point you should simply ignore your belief. With this I don’t mean you should negate it, but rather that you shouldn’t let it hurt your feelings, this is really important. If you can’t do anything about something, let it go.
② Turn them to the positive side. If you are dealing with some sort ③ See if there’s room for improvement. If you are still dealing with ④ Don’t care about it. This is the last step and you should use it MAIN PICTURE Don’t let obstacles stand in the way of reaching your potential

hopping is terrifying for me. Shopping malls intimidate me: I never find what I need when I have the money to spend, and I always see what I want when I don’t. Queues for one purchase and pushing and shoving for the sale items make the insides of my stomach quiver and I would rather be ‘so last season’ instead of going through all the hassle. But, ‘tis the season to be
jolly, and I face all of the above with a hum on my lips and a skip in my step, and I do it like a pro. And I am convinced that it is because I am not doing it for me. And I don’t think that I am that different from many others. Most of us love to give, love to see the look on someone’s surprised and happy face. Love to find that ‘perfect gift’. Love to give. The gift of giving – perhaps a little bit of a clichéd sentiment, but one

that I can totally relate to. One that, if the above doesn’t at all relate to you, I dare you to try. Differently. You see, the thing is that giving doesn’t only have to come in the shape of divinely wrapped purchased items. In fact your gift to most of the population could be as simple as giving. The fact is this: if you are reading this article right now from the screen on your computer, your smartphone or tablet, you are better off than more than half of the world. And I bet you’ve submitted your wish list to Santa already. What if on everyone’s letter to Santa they wrote about something for someone else. Orphaned children or homeless animals. Empty tummies are real, Santa isn’t. You are real – humanity isn’t – unless it’s about doing a little more for someone else. I guess the task of giving can be a little daunting. What

do you give? And to whom? How do you do it? Where do you send it? But the truth is that there are so many charities, homes, organisations and NGOs that have that covered for you. It really is as simple as a little bit of research, a teeny-weeny bit of organising, maybe a drop-off, but not necessarily, and voila. You have made difference.

that over-sized woollen jersey that you haul out once every two years only to keep the moths from nesting in could save a life this winter. Food:
budget for an additional few pounds a month to spend it on dry food and drop it off at your nearest shelter. Or better yet, offer to help them cook and serve the meal – be part of the cause. Time: gather some of your close friends and arrange for all of you to go to a nearby children’s hospital or shelter. Take crayons and books, read stories and play games. Time is after-all the best gift of all. Money: not all of us have a lot of it, and sometimes it’s hard to track how it is being spent – so start a small change bank – contact a neighbouring school and ask them to accept the donation as a contribution to a promising, but struggling child’s
education fee, extra mural fee or lunch cost. Those are the simple ones. The necessities. The items most of us take for granted. I am not asking for the whole world to become heroes overnight. I am not demanding that you feel guilty for being excited at the thought of a gift under a Christmas tree. I am not suggesting that any of this is less important. I am merely saying that the other stuff, the stuff we generally turn away from, is important too. An episode of Friends once told me that there is no such thing as a selfless act of giving, because giving makes you feel good so therefore there is something in it for you too. Well, if Joey Tribbiani was right, then there really isn’t much reason not to do it, is there? Even being the world’s most selfish person wouldn’t give you that right. W
hile I am, of course, an advocate of living a healthy lifestyle, I am not a fan of feeling miserable about your appearance just because you're a few inches bigger than you'd prefer. Because the truth is, you can instantly look (and feel) slimmer and younger with just a few careful tweaks to the clothes you wear. By wearing the colours that naturally harmonise with your overall appearance. Seriously! If you've heard of colour analysis, it may well be from Bridget Jones's Mum 'having her colours done' or some vague memory of it being 'de rigeur' back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. It's kind of got a bit of a
bad reputation for either being a bit too 'woo woo' (I'm sensing green in your aura), or being practised by slightly scary looking women who wear too much colour and put everyone else off. But here's the thing. Whether you 'believe' in colour analysis or not, you cannot deny not everyone suits the same colours and, in fact, some people look positively ill in certain colours. The truly marvellous, almost miraculous, thing about understanding which colours to wear is that you can instantly look at least one dress size smaller than you actually are and look 10 years younger. And it makes sense to follow Mother Nature's palette and work with what you've got. Once you start doing this, you are creating harmony and balance between your face and hair and

the clothes you wear. So just how does it work, and how can you figure it yourself? Some experts in colour analysis like to complicate matters. It's called 'analysis', so it must be scientific, right? Well it is science, but not of the rocket variety. So let's get some basics covered. It starts with your hair colour. If you're a red head (ginger, strawberry blonde, auburn etc) then you suit colours with a warm undertone (browns, salmon, yellow, orange, coral, kelly green). If you have grey hair (silver, white, salt & pepper etc) you suit colours with a cool undertone (blues, raspberry, sea green, grey, violet, purple). If you have naturally blonde hair, you look great in colours that are not too dark – white, light grey, baby

pink, sky blue. If you have dark brown or black hair, you look great in colours that are deeper in their tone, such as burgundy, black, navy, bottle green. If your hair colour is in the middle (mousey or dark blonde or light brown) then this means you suit colours that are also in the 'middle'. Colours less extreme such as lavender, jade, beige, light navy, golden brown, soft pink. There are tonnes of information about this on the web and you can, of course, book a consultation with a professional, which is definitely worth the small investment. The key is to be a tad braver with the colours you choose
and try something you normally wouldn't go for. The effect is astonishing. Wearing the right colours makes you look healthy and vibrant. And when you like what you see in the mirror you feel better on the inside. Win win, I'd say! The photos attached show Carol and Susan who looked old, unhappy and overweight. Yes – they had some make up and got their hair done, but you can see the difference wearing the right colours can make. The before and after shots were taken on the same day so everything to 'transform' them was done in one day. Carol looks drawn and sallow wearing beige – a common

f you’ve been following me on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube or reading my books, you’re now familiar with my brain tattoo: “To have the results only five per cent have, you need to do the things that only five per cent are willing to do.” That insight – and the others I’ve been sharing with you recently in an effort to help you end this year strong – comes from my formula for extreme achievement that has helped millions of people do amazing things with their live. To make the ideas I’ve been sharing even more relevant to you, I set about searching for some of the powerful – and sometimes eccentric – moves that the best among us make. Ernest Hemingway woke up at 5:30am every morning to write, even if he’d been drinking the night before. He wrote as a practice, not just when he felt inspired. Benjamin Franklin sat naked every morning in fresh air for his “bath” which he claimed fuelled his energy and creativity. He also listed 13 character traits in a journal that he wanted to build and measured how he lived against each of them every night before he slept. Padmasree Warrior (Chief
Technology Officer at Cisco Systems) has regular “digital detoxes” where she unplugs from technology to reboot her brain and replenish her creative reserves. Leonardo da Vinci slept via small naps throughout the day versus sleeping 8 hours straight. The famed inventor Thomas Edison reportedly did the same thing (as does Hip-Hop mogul Sean “P. Diddy” Combs). Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky took daily walks, which shifted his mind-set from the mundane to the original. The Great Nelson Mandela used to walk entire days for the exercise and mindclearing effects the discipline would deliver. So many extreme achievers take a walk every day; ideally, take your walk in nature. And bring a means to capture the outpouring of fresh insights that will flow. Steve Jobs would fast for extended periods of time, recognizing that it created a sense of euphoria within him that motivated his dazzling output of ideas. He also loved carrots, eating so many during one period that his skin turned to a soft orange colour. Maya Angelou writes in a cheap and Spartan hotel room she rents. Personally, I’ve done the most important work of my career in hotel rooms from Buenos Aires to Auckland. And on aeroplanes. The longer the flight the more I get done. Ludwig Van Beethoven loved his coffee and measured out his beans with meticulous love and care: 60 beans per cup. Many elite performers use this drink as a productivity tool. But please do so in moderation: Balzac drank 50 cups a day. Sadly, he died from a heart attack at 51. Mick Jagger exercises six days a week and includes ballet, pilates and yoga in his regimen. Sir Mick clearly gets that fitness rewires the brain to fight fear, reduces the stress response and multiplies stamina. o, what is a financial set point? “It’s a number your subconscious mind has determined feels safe,” says Dr. David Trybus. “And this number often is a result of an emotional event in your past.” You’ve probably heard emotions can impact your health. Now Dr. Trybus and his partner, Barbara Webber, say these same emotions can impact your wealth, too. For example, if you hear your father say, rich people are greedy when you’re five years old, and there are some strong emotions around his statements, as a child you may internalize this by saying ‘If I’m rich, then my father will not like me,’ says Trybus. In this case study, as a teenager with a single parent, one woman heard over and over again, “All your father thinks you are worth is the $80.10.” This was because this was the exact amount he paid in child support every month. This created a financial set

point for this number in this individual, and no matter how much she earned as an adult, the balance at the end of the cycle was always around $80. Her mother was upset as a single parent and the emotional energy around this monthly check amount created a set point in the child, says Webber. It’s the emotion that is attached to the spoken word, which carries the energy, which is then picked up by you. As an integrative medicine expert, Dr Trybus, uses kinethesiology to test where in your body and when in your lifetime, the subconscious mind has created one of these financial set points. Once identified, Trybus and Webber have created a process to clear these set
points called the Genki Clearing Process. This process, called Genki Masters, is a blend of Eastern and Western healing philosophies combined with decades of experience in Dr. Trybus’ private practice. The Genki Clearing Process has three key steps. Firstly, you need to identify where the set point is located in the physical body and create an awareness of what organ system is related to the block and what emotion is activated by the set point. Secondly, you will identify the original time the financial set point was locked into the your energy system. Thirdly, the hidden emotions are revealed, which disconnects the pattern around money, which you keep
THE BEST
YOU
Once the set point is removed, the hidden block is replaced with a new message repeating, and results in keeping you from moving forward into increased prosperity. Once the set point is removed, the hidden block is replaced with a new message to your neuro-pathway designed to strengthen the new desired outcome. This is established through a series of statements. For example, if you want to make $10, 000 a month, you may create a statement that says, “ I feel happy and safe making and keeping $10,000 a month.” Barbara Webber says the change is permanent. “It’s like weeding a garden – once you pull it out by the root, its gone, but you also need to tend you mental garden and take care of the new ideas.” The clearing is related to your personal desires. It’s not simply about being free of a pattern; it’s also about where you want to direct your energy as you move into the future. This is how the desire statements are created, what is the vision of what you would like to see manifested in your finances. It’s also important to be specific. A statement like, “I want more money” is not as powerful as “I am happy and safe to receive and keep $25,000 a month,” says Trybus. How much money is possible once the financial set point is reset? Dr. Trybus says you are the one in control. “How much do you feel you deserve?” asks Trybus. “If you can be comfortable with a million dollars, then it’s absolutely possible. You determine the numbers within yourself.” So, here is the personal challenge to you as you step into the New Year. Answer this question: What is it that you really want? Then second part of this process is to be prepared to receive it. b

Wealth Dragons shares with students inspiration, strategies and tools to help people of all ages and backgrounds change the way they think in order to change the way they live.
HOW TO BEGIN:
Mindset – many of your beliefs are self-limiting based on what your family or peers taught you. If you want success in life, you have to define what that means to you personally. To some it might be £10 million in the bank and a yacht, to others, the opportunity to own your own home, a healthy family and enough money in the bank for retirement. Education – educate yourself and learn from other experts in their field. This doesn’t mean, surfing the net and finding a few articles. Sure, this is a starting point, but go and meet like-minded people within responsible training environments. Read some fabulous books, pursue a mentor, create a power network and use your shift in mindset to help shape the ‘new you’. Action – Once you have some solid education and a positive mindset in place (and this takes time) decide what your new life looks like: if you want to start a small business, invest in property or write a book, write a plan and develop your new venture organically, while keeping your other employment going if you have to. Lifestyle – All of the above has to happen in line with you being as fit and healthy on the inside as possible. Ensure you are exercising and consuming a healthy diet that can also be extended into family life. It isn’t expensive to eat and live healthily. And the long-term benefits are infinite. Savings – Consider a family budget. What is necessary and what is superfluous to your family needs. Cut back on the daily latte or croissant and see how much you save – money that can go towards your education, new business venture or healthy recipe book
In short, changing your life is absolutely possible, at any point. This life is precious and sometimes brings unexpected challenges
collection. It is empowering to be in control of your finances, working on the premise of wealth rather than debt management. In short, changing your life is absolutely possible, at any point. This life is precious and sometimes brings unexpected challenges. So make way for roast turkey with all the trimmings and toast a new you, the best you, this Yuletide. Happy Christmas everyone (and don’t expect the roast turkey to fly into your mouth either). b For more information about how Wealth Dragons’ training can change your life please visit: http://www.wealthdragons.co.uk

GUY LALIBERTÉ
JENNIFER CAPRIATI
THE WORLD IS HIS STAGE
THE COMEBACK KID
The sun stands for energy and youth, which is what I thought the circus should be about.”
Tennis is what I do and is part of who I am.”
Hailing from French Canada, Guy Laliberté was born in 1959. He was enthralled by show business from a young age. He began staging performing arts events while still in school, however, these weren’t typical plays. Fire breathers and acrobats were more Laliberté’s style. After finishing school, he caught on with a traveling show and toured throughout Canada. Following a short stint back in the general workforce, he returned to his true passion of street performing. Laliberté co-founded Cirque du Soleil in 1984 with the help of a Canadian Government Grant. Literally meaning ‘Circus of the Sun,’ he wanted the organisation to be steeped in the concepts of ‘energy’ and ‘youth.’ Cirque du Soleil has become arguably the most recognizable live performing show on Earth, growing from a regional Canadian operation to an international entertainment machine with a presence on five continents. Laliberté’s interests have extended beyond the performing arena over the years. He is an avid high-stakes poker player, having finished in the top five at the World Series of Poker. He also became the first Canadian space tourist. His motivation in going to space was to fuel awareness for water issues facing the planet. His One Drop Foundation is designed to fight poverty with access to water. Guy Laliberté has journeyed all his life to create new perspectives in the arts, and in the art of giving back.
Taking the lifetime approach to her career, Jennifer Capriati never learned the meaning of throwing in the towel. Throughout her playing career, the tennis community and media alike attempted to label her. Ultimately winning a total of three tennis Grand Slam Singles titles, Capriati tore through a bevy of mental and physical barriers to to show the world that she would not be defined by the mistakes of her youth. Two important factors were at play to create Jennifer Capriati’s early celebrity. The first was that she was only thirteen years old at the time of her breakthrough, and the other was the fact that Capriati was one of the first female powerhitters of the modern era. Eventually becoming burned out by peaking so early, and with the media’s fascination of her every move, Capriati crashed out of the game when she was still a teenager. She subsequently had run-ins with the law, accruing two arrests on her record, made all the worse by the fact that she had yet to reach the age of twenty. Finding herself again through the game of tennis, Capriati regained her drive near the end of the 1990s. Recreating her image from the inside out, Jennifer Capriati finished her professional tennis career with fourteen singles titles, including two Australian Open titles and a French Open title. In 2012 she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
• "GUY LALIBERTÉ HAS CHANGES THE LANDSCAPE OF THE CIRCUS, GETTING RID OF THE ANTIQUATED ABUSE OF ANIMALS FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT OF HUMANS, WHICH IS SOMETHING WE SHOULD ALL RESPECT."
• "JENNIFER CAPRIATI IS LIVING PROOF THAT YOU CAN COME BACK TO SOMETHING WHEN YOU ARE READY AND BE GREAT AT IT. SOMETIMES YOU ARE TOO YOUNG TO DEAL WITH GREATNESS."

JOHN PAUL DEJORIA
URSULA BURNS
FROM HAIR TO BILLIONAIRE
A CAREER TO BE COPIED
Good hairstylists never die. Vidal Sassoon and Paul Mitchell will always live on.”
Where you are is not who you are. Remember that when you’re rich and famous.”
How does a former Los Angeles gang member become a billionaire? With the right mix of hair care, tequila, various energy holdings and philanthropy. John Paul DeJoria was born in Los Angeles in 1944. His parents divorced early in his life and, after his mother found it too difficult to support DeJoria and his brother, the pair was placed in a foster home. After deciding that gang life in LA probably wasn’t the best way to spend his career, DeJoria first checked into the US Navy before bouncing through a series of menial jobs. He eventually found his way into hair care, working for Redken Laboratories. He secured a $700 loan and found a business partner in Paul Mitchell, the man with whom he would build his hair care empire. Over the years, DeJoria’s ambitions grew. He cofounded the The Patron Spirits Company, makers of the world famous Patron Ultra Premium Tequila. He also maintains interests in the oil and natural gas sectors, and was a founding partner of the House of Blues. It seems that almost everything John Paul DeJoria touches has turned to gold. He has also taken his good fortune and given back in many ways. His philanthropic efforts include involvement in the Food for Africa organization, where he has helped to feed and nourish over 17,000 orphaned children.
Ursula Burns was brought up by a single mother in a New York City housing project. Hardly the place one would associate with one of the most powerful women in the modern world. Burns’s education took her beyond her humble beginnings. She earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, the latter from Columbia University. On her path to becoming the first African American female CEO to head a Fortune 500 company, Burns worked at Xerox Corporation as a summer intern. After spending several years in product development, she began to work directly under the Chairman and CEO of the company. Burns spent the first decade of the 2000s working closein-partnership with Anne Mulcahey, the previous CEO of Xerox. She then took the reigns from Mulcahey, which made her the first woman to follow another woman as the head of a Fortune 500ranked company. The very next year she added to her impressive resume the title of Chairwoman. Ursula Burns has always maintained a strong sense of community, holding seats on several boards, including the University of Rochester and the MIT Corporation. When Burns assumed the top spot at Xerox, Forbes Magazine also listed her as the 14th most powerful woman in the world.
• “JOHN PAUL DEJORIA IS THE EPITOME OF COOL AND KNOWS HOW TO MAKE PEOPLE LOOK FABULOUS. HE IS PROOF THAT A LIFE’S CHOICE ISN’T SIMPLY WHICH GANG TO JOIN. YOU CAN BE SUCCESSFUL OUTSIDE OF CRIME."
• “TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL AS A BLACK WOMAN IS INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT, BUT URSULA BURNS SHOWS THAT IT’S POSSIBLE. SHE IS AN INSPIRATION TO ALL YOUNG GIRLS OF COLOUR THAT THEY CAN BE ANYTHING THEY SET THEIR MIND TO."

TOP TIPS THOMAS GAGLIANO DON’T BE AN OVER-CARER Do you carry the burden of the family’s problems on your shoulders because it’s your role to take care of everything and everyone? Some of us are natural nurturers, and pampering and taking care of people feels like the right thing to do. But there is a difference between being a good host and being overbearing. Ask yourself what inner voice makes you feel so guilty when asking for help?
DON’T BE A PERFECTIONIST
THE
FESTIVE BLUES
Thomas Gagliano talks about the holidays and the stress of going home. We play roles in our lives that were created by the messages we received in childhood. What inner voice is commanding us to play these roles and why do we listen? DON’T BE A PEOPLE PLEASER Do you say yes to family and friends because saying no is too painful? Sometimes it is really difficult to say no, especially to friends and family. You could find yourself spending more on gifts than you can afford, or preparing four different types of potatoes to satisfy everyone’s different tastes at Christmas lunch. Learn why it’s so difficult for so many people to say no
Are you allowed to make mistakes in front of your family? God forbid the family sees you stumble at times. When you made a mistake did you identify yourself as a mistake? Mistakes are good, they are how you learn. And everybody makes them, so there’s no shame in them. In my book I explain the ways to silence your oppressive bully and give yourself the compassion you deserve.
DON’T BECOME A WALLFLOWER When you return home do you to lose your voice and disappear with family members? If you have a very charismatic family, it is easy to lose yourself and blend into the background, especially if you only see your family a a few times a year. Find your voice with others and you'll find your rights to share your feelings and be heard. Speak up!

BEHIND ASOS
The face of shopping has certainly changed a lot since the internet has become commonplace in our homes. What used to be a mad dash to the high street on a Saturday morning can now be done from your couch at any time of the day. We look at one of the men behind the phenomenon of online shopping. here’s something alluring about a successful entrepreneur who wasn’t always a hard worker. Perhaps it’s because it makes the lazier of us feel we might still hit the jackpot of success. Yes, it’s true that Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard, but it’s important to remember that he got into Harvard in the first place. Nick Robertson, co-founder of ASOS.com, may not have dropped out of college, but he
does describe his university experience as “diabolical” after getting very poor results at an elite educational institution. As the incomparable Austin Reed as Nick’s great grandfather, it may seem like all things sartorial run in Robertson’s blood, but it took him a while to fulfil his destiny in the world of fashion. After his performance at school left something to be desired, he spent some time on the slopes, skiing and not doing much else. Eventually, at the age of 20, he followed his father into the world of advertising, taking up

a post at Young & Rubicam in 1987 as a media buyer, where he stayed for nearly four years. He left for a brief stint at Young & Rubicam’s main competition; Nick decided he was better off working for himself. In 1996, Nick teamed up with Quentin Griffiths and formed Entertainment Marketing, an advertising agency that brought product placement to the forefront of sales tactics, placing wellknown brands in TV shows. Pretty soon they were attracting
THE BEST YOU big brands such as Carlsberg, Coca-Cola and Ford. Product placement is where the idea for ASOS was born, or as it was called then, As Seen On Screen. “We read a stat back in 1999 that when the programme Friends aired,” says Nick. “NBC got 4,000 calls about some standard lamp in one of their apartments asking where it could be purchased. So that was the real idea behind the business. Anything that gets exposure in a film or TV programme creates desire among the public, so we based the shop around that.” Starting with products from the screen, it was only later that As Seen On Screen started in the world of fashion. A summarised excerpt from the ASOS chapter in the book How 25 Good Ideas Became Spectacular Digital Businesses by Georgina-Kate Adams, published by Crimson Publishing, says it best: "Nick and Quentin launched As Seen On Screen online in June 2000, just after the dot-com bubble had burst. With the good fortune of
having entrepreneurial families who were willing to back the venture, the pair raised a total of £2.4m in start-up capital and purchased a variety of celebrity-linked products to launch the business. “It was always going to be an online business, because of the amount of products that came up after being on TV. It needed to serve that function,” Nick says. One of their first hires was buyer Lorri Penn. She believed deeply in the potential of focusing the business on fashion – and they trusted her judgement. “It wasn’t until our first buyer came in, who was a fashion buyer, that we were pushed in that direction,” Nick says. “Fashion is where we got the most returns for the business. Rather than saying ‘here’s a standard top’, we could say ‘here’s a top that Jennifer Aniston wore in Friends.” Targeted initially at 18 – 24-year-olds wishing to ‘steal’ an icon’s style, the company homed in on the popularity of starlets such as Kate Moss and
