By: Eddie Cranfield

Tourangeau Wins at City Lights By: Andrea Saenz-Maes, Tournament Director

WOW! What a Weekend! Stan Tourangeau snapped off the Tacoma City Lights – McDermott Thanksgiving 9-Ball Open November 29th and 30th. With everyone’s great play, it made for a great weekend! Sixty-one players competed for $3,940 in prize money. It was a very competitive and entertaining time for all. From this players standpoint, it was an honor to watch and participate with some of the best in the business. (City Lights continued on page 15)

On December 13th and 14th, Harvey’s Billiards in Renton, Washington held the December McDermott 9 Ball Tour Tournament co-sponsored by The Break and McDermott Cues. 47 out of the 48 entrants that were signed up for the tournament showed up to do battle on the thirteen 9 foot tables used for this tournament. Dan Louie 1st Place Mr. Harvey was extremely impressed by the attitude and professionalism of all of the players. The tournament went off with out any problems. Bert Harvey did institute a rule that kept the players on time. For every 10 minutes you were late for a match you lost one game. This rule only got used during the first matches and was not needed again. There was also no smoking permitted during the entire tournament. The first day went smoothly with the matches starting at 9a.m. and finishing by 4 p.m. leaving the top 12 finishers to play the next day for all the cash. There were a few upsets the first day of play, but that can happen in the (Harvey’s continued on page 19)

Western BCA Adds New Events From: The WBPPA Board

The 2004 9th Annual Regional 8-Ball Tournament at Chinook Winds will bring some new and positive changes for the members of the WBPPA. The first being, that one day has been added to this tournament and it will start on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2004. This was done to accommodate the tournament finish and not shortening races or cutting events. Mark your calendars. In fact, there will be more events added. The very large Open is split into an Open A and Open B Division. The Open A will be the entrants who have been money winners this past year. The Open B Division will be the others who have entered in the past. There will also be a Seniors Division for both men and women. The men must be at least 55 years old by the first entry deadline and the women 50 years old. No master players are allowed to enter the Seniors. The board hopes these changes will be productive and more interesting for all. See everyone there. (see ad page 8) OTB

WSPL: Big Dog The WSPL Management would first of all like to Thank ALL of the TEAMS, that have participated in the Federal Way and Gig Harbor Division development. ****** Without the PLAYERS and TEAMS, there would not be a BIG DOG Division. THANK YOU ALL Very Much!! At first the Big Dog Divisions moved slowly, and then the (Big Dog continued on page 10)

2004 BCA Hall of Fame Ballots

The 8-Ball Bible

Actor Jerry Orbach scheduled to attend ceremony to honor inductees From: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development

A Guide To Bar Table Play When I first came across “The 8-Ball Bible” it made me curious about the correlation. At first I thought it wouldn’t live up to its name – was I ever wrong! There are diagrams that are illustrated on how, why, where, from, to etc. The complexities that can baffle any player are explained with amazing simplicity, with rules, how to practice and how to play. You’ll find a new way of thinking about the game of 8-Ball and how to play to win. A new look at preparing for your game and why you shouldn’t beat yourself up. “The 8-Ball Bible” offers information on safeties, your starting shot, as well as mental imagery, stroking, thinking the wrong way and the obstacles that can stop your runs. If you are just starting to play 8-Ball or a seasoned league veteran, this book has something to offer. For your pool library. Others will notice the improvement in your game and ask how you did it. 12th Semi-Annual USPPA Reno Warm-up 9-Ball from: Chet Itow, California Billiard Club

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - Nov 29-30, 2004 We had 98 players competing for the $2,000 first prize. The two day event had many great matches. On Sunday the final 24 players had many matches that went hill - hill. Seventeen of the twenty-four players were averages over 100. This gave the audience some of the best pool they have ever seen. The finals was a slow thriller. Jeff Gregory, who had won this tournament last November, was in the hot seat waiting for Amar Kang. Amar, who had also won this tournament 3 year ago, had worked his way from the one loss side. In the finals, this was a true double elimination and Amar had to beat Jeff 2 sets of eight. Amar (162 average) spotted Jeff(110 average) two games. Jeff immediately jumped out to a 4 game lead. When Jeff was winning 7-2, Amar made his move. Amar worked hard during the next 5 games and took it to hill - hill. In this final game, Amar was running balls when he scratched and gave Jeff cue ball in hand. Jeff proceeded to run the remaining balls to win the match and the $2,000. 98 Players @ $60.00 Added Money Total Prize Money

THERE’S AN OLD GAME MADE NEW IN TOWN From: Rose & Ford, League Directors

Shotze’s in Everett hosted its second season of a new In-House 9-Ball League. Again, as the first season did, the second was a huge success. The league at this time is being played with 3-person teams, 10 teams, on five 9-foot tables. Our goal is to build this league into 4-person teams but stay with a (10) team max. What makes this league such a success is that every penny the players paid in is paid back out. There is a $20 league fee per player and then a $10 weekly fee for each week. League is on Monday nights and runs for (14) weeks with free practice from 6-7pm, and starting time at 7pm. Each player plays (9) games weekly (will be (12) games with 4-person teams). Every player earns $1 back for every game won during the regular season and the (5) top individuals with percentages receive cash prizes. Also Shotze’s starts the season off with a 9-ball break pot of $100 and players have the option to buy tickets at $2 each and (3) tickets are drawn weekly to give those lucky players the opportunity to make a 9-ball break to win the money available. The money is carried over to the following week if not won until the end of the season. After the individual payouts and top percentages, the remaining money is paid out in a Singles Playoff. EVERY member of the league that qualifies receives money for participating in the playoffs. Shotze’s also adds $500 to the playoffs. For this season there was a fantastic $6,428 paid out. The breakdown was as follows: $1,849 individual win, $150 percentage winners, $795 in mystery 9-ball break envelopes and $3,634 paid out in the singles playoffs. If you would like to join this league, please don’t hesitate. Right now there are approx (6) established teams. We have the room for teams and individuals can be added to existing teams or put together to form teams. This is a singles league so how a team finishes has no baring on the amount of money each individual can win. The winner of each of the singles playoffs has his/her entry paid into the next Shotze’s weekend tournament. This season’s playoff was the weekend of December 20th & 21st. Scott Chandler lost his first match on Saturday to Joe McLaughlin (4-9) and marched all the way through the b-side to take first place. Scott’s matches were Joe (4-9), Brent Langley (7-3), David Shields (7-2), Don Rachels (7-2), Dave Eckert (7-3), Alan Buck (7-2), Ray Lundy (7-4), Rodger Arent (7-5) and defeating Jeff Jimenez in the finals (11-7). Some amazing pool was played by Scott to win this tournament. Jeff Jimenez made a bid to become the champion of this season’s league but unfortunately came up short. His matches were Ken Wilson (9-6), Arnold R. (9-1), Ray Lundy (9-1), Alan Buck (9-6), and then winning the point match against Rodger Arent (9-2). Scott came into the finals only having to defeat Jeff to win it all and he did just that. Scott took an early lead and never looked back. Jeff made valiant efforts to catch up with Scott but

couldn’t quite get the edge that was needed to put a couple of games together. Again the final score was Scott (11) and Jeff (7). Congratulations, Scott. When I mentioned earlier that every member of the league that participated in the playoffs made money, I wasn’t kidding. (27) players started the playoffs and all (27) were paid money. Below is how each member ended: (#1 = playoff - #2 = individual wins - #3 = 9-ball break mystery envelopes & #4 = top individual percentage winners) 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5/6 7/8 9-12

There is lots of opportunity for you in this league. We are looking for the dedicated league player who wants to expand their horizons into the 9-ball world. We want to be able to pay (10) top percentages, (3) hi-women percentages, and tons more money out in the singles playoffs. If you think that you have what it takes to play in this kind of league, come join us for our next kick off meeting on January 12th at 7pm. League will start up again on January 19th. Hope to see you all then.

$2,000 ADDED Next place E ball one half of a ball to the left of pocket E and one half of an inch out from cushion # 3, the long rail. The cue ball is in hand anywhere behind the X line. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball to E ball, carom to cushion # 3, then rebound and curve back to F ball. You make both object balls as pocket letter designated. A scratch is allowed and you may contact an extra cushion by F ball. Here are a few helpful hints on how to execute this shot. I place my cue ball centered from pocket A to E ball, not as diagrammed. Keep your cue level to the plane of the table. You don’t need as much high, (follow) on the cue ball as you think you do. Stroke at a moderate speed and not with a lot of power. Based on a 13 mm tip, I use about two-thirds of a tip of left English. Don’t forget to follow through. Have fun with this one. Next months Artistic shot will be from the bank/kick Discipline and have a, DOD of 7. OTB

A Basic Aiming System By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

Email Questions to: jewett@sfbilliards.com harada@sfbilliards.com mejia@sfbilliards.com

San Francisco Billiard Academy Sometimes I think beginners believe too much in aiming systems. They think that if they just find the right way to look at the cue ball, object ball and pocket, they will never miss again. Unfortunately, there is no such system. Aim varies with balls cloth, stick, speed, spin, humidity, and where your head is, literally and figuratively. All systems, or at least the ones I know about, ignore some or most of those factors. The only way to learn how to aim is to play and develop a feel for angles, but that’s not to say that all systems are worthless. A system can provide a first estimate of the line Bob Jewett of a shot that you have no feel for, which will frequently be the case if you are just beginning to play seriously. If you practice with one, it can give you confidence in times of stress. A system will usually make you look at the shot, and that alone will improve your play if you’ve gotten into really lazy habits. Finally, a system will organize angles into a structure that may be easier to understand than if every shot is separate and unconnected to shots at slightly different angles.

The fractional ball aiming system has been with us for perhaps 200 years — it appears in a book by Edwin Kentfield that was published in 1839. The basic idea is simple: any cut angle is described by “how much” of the object ball the cue ball hits. If the cue ball is directed straight at the object ball, it is said to hit the object ball “full.” If the center of the cue ball is sent towards the exact edge of the object ball, it is said to hit “half” of the object ball. If the cue ball barely grazes the edge of the object ball, for a cut of nearly 90 degrees, it is a “very thin” hit. Various thicknesses of hit are illustrated in the top diagram. Shown is how much the cue ball overlaps the object ball from the tip’s-eye-view. Of course the diagram is a simplification, since the balls are drawn as equal-sized twodimensional disks, and real balls are three dimensional. The cue ball will always appear larger than the object ball at its starting point and even at the time of contact because it will be nearer to you. Besides full ball and half ball are 1/4th or “quarter” ball and 3/4ths full. To aim for a half ball hit, you actually have a visible target: the edge of the

object ball. Your stick should be aimed directly through the center of the cue ball at the edge of the object ball. For 3/4 full, you sort of have a target if your stick is pointed half way from the center of the object ball to the edge. For a 1/4 full shot, your stick must be aimed as much outside the edge of the ball as the 3/4 shot was aimed inside the ball. In the lower diagram is view from above of a halfball hit to make things a little clearer. Note that the edge of the cue ball is going towards the center of the object ball, just as it’s center is going towards the edge of the object ball. Also drawn is a line half way between the two “centerlines” (Basic Aiming continued on page 29)

Jones sent the home fans in to a state of ecstasy as Team Europe’s brave challenge was ended with an 11-9 scoreline. Marcus Chamat was quickly 2-0 down after a break and run and then clearance with a clever 2-ball bank by Jones, but the Swede fought back with a run out of his own. Chamat missed a simple 5-ball in the fourth to give Jones clear water and a run-out took him to the hill. A dry break by Chamat on rack six looked costly but he didn’t waste his opportunity when allowed back in and closed the gap to 4-2. An error by Jones when he missed the 2-ball gave Chamat a lifeline, but it was all over on the next when Chamat left a tough 1-ball on and Jones pounced to clear and ensure the cup would return to the hands of Team USA. Thorsten Hohmann 3 - 5 Rodney Morris After yesterday’s heroics, things started badly for Team USA as Rodney Morris halved Team USA’s deficit as he edged out world champion Thorsten Hohmann in the opening match of Day Four. Morris took advantage of a ball in hand to run out the first against the break but Hohmann executed a clever clearance to level in the next. The German got in to stroke to clear from the break and then Morris followed suit as the match reached 2-2. After an exchange of snookers in rack five Morris was handed a chance which he took to take the lead for the first time but Hohmann dragged the match back in to the balance as he negotiated a tricky run-out. However, Morris, to the delight of the home crowd, capitalised on a scratch after a nasty kick in the seventh and then a lack of position on the six in the eighth rack to take the match and make the overall scores 8-7 to Europe. Steve Davis 2 - 5 Johnny Archer Mosconi veteran Johnny Archer put in another stellar performance as he cruised past Steve Davis to tie

Davis took the next after Archer failed to execute a tough 2 / 7 combination leaving an open table for the European. Archer ran out of position and left himself an awkward shot on the 8 ball down the rail. He missed an Davis wrapped up the 8 and 9 to go into the lead at 2 - 1. That was to be Davis’ final success of the game. Davis’ lack of knowledge told in the fourth as he put Archer back in after the American pushed out. Archer banked the 1 ball in and proceeded to clear to tie it up. A scratch by Davis in the next gifted the rack to Archer. Davis failed to make a ball on the break and Archer executed a tricky clearance to put Team USA on level terms. Nick van den Berg 4 - 5 Earl Strickland Team USA continued their superb comeback as Earl Strickland beat Holland’s Nick van den Berg in a 54 thriller that saw the Americans regain the lead at 9-8. They are now two points away from regaining the trophy they last held in 2001. Strickland recovered from his 5-0 drubbing yesterday as he performed well in the pressure cooker atmosphere at the MGM Grand. From the opening break Strickland had no real shot on the 2-ball and left van den Berg in snooker situation from which the Dutchman scratched. With ball in hand Strickland cleared to take the early lead. A golden break from van den Berg levelled it at 1-1 before a run out from the break restored the USA lead. Strickland missed a long cut at the 2-ball to leave van den Berg a chance to clear which he took. Strickland ran out in game five and won the next to go to 4-2 after the European missed a difficult 1/8 combination and left the table open. Strickland had a chance to wrap it up in the next but ran slightly out of position on the brown 7 and missed (Mosconi continued on page 16)

POOL ETIQUETTE A COMMON SUBJECT THAT GREATLY EFFECTS THE GAME WE ALL LOVE BY: CRAIG W. RITTEL OWNER OF FULL SPLICE BILLIARDS 10606 BRIDGEPORT WAY S.W. LAKEWOOD, WA 98499

Craig W Rittel

Hello, this month let lets take a look at a subject that many times gives our sport a black eye in the eyes of the general public, and also in the eyes of new league players and that is a lack of Etiquette while participating in pocket billiards. Our sport and especially league play should be serious, but also something that is enjoyed beyond just winning matches and trophies. I truly think the average league player uses their time during league play as a form of stress relief, and relaxation after a hard days work. Keeping this in mind, these same people do not want to deal with un-conscience or conscience negative behavior, poor sportsmanship, or bad habits that effect fair play. Lets start with the obvious, what is difficult about being

courteous to your opponent and your opponent’s team. When another team comes to local establishment for league play, they should be treated as guests. This simply means treat others, as you want to be treated. Make the other team feel at home, help keep the noise down during play, help stop other patrons not involved in league play from becoming a problem and from getting in the way. Be fair while winning a match is very important, winning by intimidation from patrons either observing or playing during league play is un-acceptable and should not be tolerated by league operators or by team captains. A good example of this occurred recently during league play here in Washington State. A player from an opposing team was asked not to smoke a cigar because it was making another player sick. The players reaction to this was to not only continue to smoke his cigar, but to act as if it was a joke and to antagonize the situation further by intentionally blowing smoke in the direction of the other player. What did he have gain by this behavior? Additionally how was this situation perceived by others on both teams? Last how should conduct unbecoming be treated by and why

are no actions taken by league operators against individuals and teams who behave in this manner on a frequent basis. Below are listed some of the more common actions that show poor etiquette during play. 1. Spitting in the chalk 2. Placing the chalk upside down on the table or creating a mess on the table by other means. 3. Removing the chalk form your cue tip on the floor or furniture at your local establishment. 4. Standing at the Table and chalking your cue when it is your opponents shot. 5. Walking away from the table with house chalk when your time at the table is over. 6. Placing items on the table such as drinks, food, or your backside. 7. Standing near the table when it is no longer your shot or intentionally standing and making movements in your opponent’s line of aim. 8. Consciously trying to distract your opponent, by noise, by talking to them, or by other means designed to break their concentration during play. 9. Intentionally being late for your match

10. Sand bagging 11. Intentionally causing damage to house equipment, pool tables, racks, cue sticks and other items provided by the establishment owner. 12. Any form of unsporting behavior, such as, slamming the rack down on the table, throwing things, foul language due to a miss or a loss, or intentionally antagonizing other players either through intimidation or unprofessional behavior. Inclosing, I think most players want an environment where they feel comfortable and where they can enjoy this sport. I also think that league operators should take a closer look at policing league play. If these behaviors are truly made unacceptable and actions are taken to deter unprofessional behavior things can change. All players have to do to make this happen is band together and make you voices heard, there is definitely strength in numbers and numbers are on your side. Please have a wonderful Christmas and an even better New Year!!!!!!!!!!!! And keep your stroke in tune. Last, anyone who has additional information regarding this subject can contact me at manwon@comcast.net or at 1-253512-6898 from 9am until 7:30pm MF and 11am until 7pm Sat. OTB

players voted on many things. But, with a little innovation and support, the players of the WSPL BIG DOG have helped us develop a new playing format that has become very popular! The BIG DOG Divisions in Federal Way and Gig Harbor gives us an opportunity to have some fast paced fun. With a 3-5 format (3 players per team, per night), and a maximum of 5 players on your team roster, we are able to start at 6:30PM, and finish by 8:30PM. Most Big Dog players are able to make it home early therefore making it home in time to keep our ‘better halves’ happy!! Although the WSPL requires that you be a member of a team in an established division. We only require that each player plays (4) regular matches on any one team during each session. The players who at present are playing in the Big Dog Division, will actually become the teachers and instructors of the new players coming into the new Big Dog Divisions. Which will further develop the WSPL, and soon to come SOLA. So, if you really want to have some fun, and not stay out all night! Please contact us at 253-606-POOL, and let us answer your questions! The following locations will be supporting the BIG DOG Divisions again starting in late October. January 2004

From The Work Bench by: Pat Sheehan See Ad Page 13 By the time you read this, the Christmas Season is over. I hope you enjoyed the holidays, I know that I will. Like I mentioned in my last article, the last minute rush to get the table for the kids is no longer the big item. The last two tables I sold were for the month of January. Pool is a year round thing and most people own up to the fact that the table is really for the adults. I am putting a picture of the 1906 table that Pat Sheehan we redesigned. Come to find out that it was in Erickson’s Bar in downtown Portland. Erickson’s had the longest bar in the world. It went all the way from Third Street to Forth Street on West Burnside. The bar was one of the oldest in Portland and was owned at one time by Henry Weinhart. There were six Brunswick “Brilliant Novelty” tables. Most of which I have restored. I still have one that spent 30 years in a chicken coop. Henry sold the “Novelties” and the next owner put in cheaper models. The picture shows the 1906-1920 tables that were there. In 1955 Dad and I moved 10 of the tables from the Rialto to the Alaska which was one half of the old Erickson’s. It was a big place and I can only imagine what Erickson’s must have been. We are still restoring some classic tables from the early 1900’s. We finished the Mission style table for McMenamin’s Rock Creek Tavern. The original burned to the ground twice. I plan to do a story on it in one of the next editions. The table originally came from the East Side Billiards. It was made by Brunswick early in the century; however, it had five coats of paint and we were unable to find the patent dates. It took forever to get through all the paint that the people at Lewis & Clark College applied, but Mike liked

the style and the frame turned out beautiful. The slate for this table is in Grants Pass on another table so we used the new over size slate and built a new set of quarter sawn Oak rails. It plays like God intended a pool table to play, Gorina supplied the English Green Tournament 2000 Cloth and I find that it goes on much better and plays better than Simonis. You can get 9 rails with an easy stroke. The solid rail and K55 profile cushion gives an excellent bounce, and the accuracy to permit the 9 rail shot. If you are in Portland you must make the trip to see the Rock Creek Tavern and play on the table. The place is just like it was before the fire only much nicer. There are so many beautiful items that your head just continues to spin left and right and up and down. Mike told me that it cost $1,500,000 to rebuild and outfit. The Rock Creek Tavern is on 10000 Old Cornelius Pass Road and well worth the trip. For directions call 503-645-3822. Still working on the 1905 Econo, the owner decided to do some of the project so we have to wait for him to show, so we went to the next table which is from the 1909 to 1912; however, we cannot find a name to go with it. I have tried everyone I know, even the great guru, Joe Newell. He has every catalog that Brunswick ever published but no picture of this one. It is a 5 x 10 Billiard and Pool with interchangeable rails with the Eureka Patent Fastener. The table is very unusual and when I have it finished I will send a picture in to “The Break”. The owner pulled all the veneer but two hidden pieces, so I know it is another quarter sawn Oak table. To make things worse, the owner took a belt sander to the substructure and gouged the surface so badly it has taken a week to fill the surfaces to the level of the highest point. There are many curves to bend around and 86 surfaces to veneer. It’s one of those jobs when you have to say I think it’s going to cost so much but I won’t know until it’s done. In my mind’s eye I know exactly what it should look like but it’s a real task to make it happen. See you all in the next exciting chapter of “The Break”. OTB

January 2004

Shotze’s Fall Classic EVERETT, WA - November 22-23, 2003 I really don’t know what it is about this tournament, but it always seems to draw all of the best of the west out of the woodwork. Out of the forty field that went off on Saturday, half are considered tournament winners, world travelers and major contenders in any tournament they participate in. It is simply amazing. Stan Tourangeau, the winner of our last tournament, showed up ready to prove that the last win was no fluke. His two Saturday matches were Joe McLaughlin (7-1) and Dave Jones (7-1). Stan’s Sunday matches were against tough Washington players. The first was Robert Colby (8-5), Kris Iverson (8-4) and then a major win against another Canadian, Paul Potier (8-7) for the point match. Paul has participated in a few of Shotze’s tournaments over the last eight years and has done well. His Saturday matches were Dave Williams (71), Zorix (7-3) and Mike Shannon (7-1). Paul also started out Sunday against some tough Washington players. They were Tim Tweedell (8-6), Dan Louie (8-4) and then his loss against Stan (7-8). Paul fought his way back to the finals by defeating Kris Iverson (7-6). Stan took a commanding lead and never looked back. Paul did try to make a match out of it at one time, but Stan wasn’t having anything to do with it and finished the match. The score was Stan (9) and Paul (6). Congratulations Stan. The question is, can he do it again for an unheard of three in a row. Hopefully, we will see in March of 2004. Watch for our ad for the next Spring Classic. Once again, and as always, the players need to take time out to thank Darryl, owner of Shotze’s, for a great place for a tournament, and also for the extraordinary staff that is always on hand to make the players weekend as easy as possible. Without those two elements, tournaments of this caliber for this area wouldn’t be. Final results are as follows: $940/$324 Stan Tourangeau 1st 2 nd $600/$243 Paul Potier $400/$162 Kris Iverson 3 rd th 4 $300/$81 Dan Louie 5/6 $225 Sam Y, Santos 7/8 $175 Alan Ima, Tim Tweedell 9-12 $120 Jeff Jimenez, Mike Vidas, Robert Colby, J D Thanks to each and everyone of you for participating in this tournament and hopefully we will see you in March. Class “D” 9-Ball

From: Clay Skidmore, Tournament Director

SPOKANE, WA On December 6th and 7th McQ’s Billiards hosted a class “D” 9-ball tournament. Many of the 38 players that entered the event really felt like they had a good chance to win. And that is exactly what I am striving for. I want to direct tournaments for all levels of play and I want the players in those events to really feel that they have a good chance to win. My system is not in any way perfect, but at least I give opportunities from the top to the bottom. Thank you very much to the players that played and I’ll see you at the next event. 1st $400 Brian Condin side pot $135 2 nd $280 Chuck Hood 3 rd $175 Dan (Tic Toc) Evanger 4 th $125 John Lesonik th 5 $75 Don White, John Joplin 7 th $50 John Hoff, Chris Bailey OTB 9 th $25 Mark Nevills, Don Totten, Rick Adams, Bob White

the long pot up the table. Van den Berg cleared the remaining three balls to take the rack.Another error from the American, this time a fluffed 2/5 combo down the rail, gave Team Europe a lifeline which van den Berg duly took to put the match at hill-hill.With everything at stake, Strickland cracked home a brilliant break shot to put two balls down and leave a road map to victory. Mika Immonen 2 - 5 Tony Robles New York’s Tony Robles finally came good as he stopped in-form European Mika Immonen in his tracks to put Team USA on the hill at this year’s Mosconi Cup.The 5 - 2 win for the US puts them within one point of regaining the trophy they last held in 2001. The Finnish star took the opener as he ran out from the break but a couple of errors from Immonen in the next two racks gave Robles the opportunity to take the lead at 2 - 1. Robles made a spectacular jump shot to pocket the 4 ball but messed up the safety on the orange 5 and Immonen was able to dish up for the rack. Immonen scratched on the break in the next and Robles ran out with ball in hand to regain the lead and a further scratch by Immonen followed by a foul on the 7 ball gave Robles the chance to go 4 - 2. To compound the misery Immonen came up dry in his final break and Robles held himself together to run out and take the point. Ralf Souquet 5 - 3 Charlie Williams In a match that seemed to last a lifetime, Ralf Souquet held off Charlie Williams to keep Euro hopes alive the MGM Grand. The score now stands at 10-9 in favour of the USA with a potential two games left to play. The match was characterised by some excellent safety play from both players but it was Williams who made the critical errors down the home stretch to give the former World Champion the chances he needed to seal the victory. With the scores tied at three racks each Williams broke but could only manage a safety on the 1-ball. It looked good but with the 1-ball hovering by the bottom right pocket, Souquet managed to jump the blocking balls and pocket the yellow 1. From there he cleared the table to go to into a 43 lead.Souquet broke in the next and cleared until the pink 5 but a long roll down the table was too loose and the pink failed to drop. With just four balls left it looked a certainty for Williams to level it up but he committed a school boy error as he missed a straightforward green 6. The pro America crowd gasped in disbelief and it was left to Souquet to clear three balls to register Team Europe’s first win of the final day. (Mosconi Cup continued on page 20)

We are proud to introduce a new product to clean your pool table cloth. It’s called The Original Quick-Clean, A First Quality Pool Table Cleaner. There is no other product designed to clean your pool table cloth without harming the cloth or requiring a lot of work. Replacing the cloth costs hundreds of dollars and takes time away from play. It doesn’t matter if you have a home table, a pool hall with 30 or more tables, or a tavern with only one or two tables. This product will save you time and money, and keep your pool table cloth looking and playing like new. Just spray it on the cloth and wipe it off. That’s all there is to it. It takes about a minute to clean the table and you can play on it with no waiting. The product does not wet the cloth, so it requires no drying time. It will not fade the cloth, and has been tested in both a home and a poolhall environment for several years before release to the general pool playing public. If you had chalk on an expensive suit, you wouldn’t brush it, you would dry clean it, so why brush your pool table cloth? Dry clean it with Quick-Clean. Things Quick-Clean Will Do: Safe on all grades of pool table cloth Brings cloth back to the original color Eliminates table slide caused by new cloth Brings cloth back to original playing speed Makes cloth last 40 to 50% longer Cleans table in 60 seconds Ready for play immediately Keeps under rails clean No dust in pockets to get balls dirty Keeps balls shinier No chalk dust on furniture & fixtures Saves time in cleaning Makes it easier for anybody to clean tables so they will do it Cleans Irish linen cue grips For more information, Contact Us (for the Western United States) at 1877-285-3099 or David Hodges at 1-866-240-2789. Holiday “Classic”

From: Dick Jones, Event Coordinator/Manager

This tournament, which is headquartered at Eagles Club #326, Bozeman, MT, was played Saturday November 29 and Sunday November 30, 2003. The Holiday “Classic” which is only in the fourth year, has again produced an awesome field of 77 men in the open division and 31 ladies in the women’s division. By that Saturday night the field had been narrowed to 16 men in the open division for the finals bracket and Jody Thornton 1st 8 ladies in the women’s division for the finals bracket. Before going any farther, there are some people I need to thank for all their

help. Shelly Mitchell, James Deming for helping with the brackets run here at the Eagles Club. Mike Wright for running the women’s division at the Molly Brown. Here’s hoping I didn’t miss anybody. For sure you all did a great job, thank you. Finally, I would like to thank all the pool players that came to play in this tournament. Without a doubt, the field was filled with nothing but class act pool players. Again, thank you for playing in the Holiday “Classic”. And finally to Curt Watts who did all the real work,

what a great job, thank you. (Holiday Classic continued on page 27)

And then Mike plays John and wins 6 to 4. With three players left we get to see who will get to the point. It’s Dan Louie playing Robert Colby. Dan wins 8 to 4. Now the re-match was on between Mike Z and Robert C. It was one of the craziest matches of the tournament with ups and downs the whole (l to r) Tom Lyons and John Plunkett (4th) match, but in the end Robert hung in there and won 6 to 5 on a played wonder shot. He went for it and won it. With a 10 minute recess the finals started in a one race to 11 games. Now for the winners side! Dan Louie plays Doug Enera and it comes down to a nail biter with Dan winning 8 to 7. Next was Mike Zimmerman playing Robert Colby and it was yet another nail biter with Robert coming out on top 8 to 7. With only eight players remaining John Plunkett beats Randy 6 to 2. John played some solid matches. Then JD beats LC 6 to 4 this too was a well played match. All remaining six players had a good chance to win the tournament. John now plays Doug and wins handily 6 to 1. Mike beats JD 6 to 4.

Celebrating Our 2nd Anniversary

TEAM USA were understandably delighted to have regained the Mosconi Cup, particularly with the event being played on their home soil for the first time in its ten-year history. Led by captain Nick Varner, the Americans fought back from an 8-6 deficit after Day Three to take the honours with an 11-9 win. Here are the thoughts of the men that matter from Team USA: Varner “These guys have incredible heart. Even after the catastrophic events of yesterday, we easily thought we could win this 11–9 if things went our way. What we were concerned about this morning was that we were 8–6 down. We discussed what the line up would be and we all agreed very quickly but I was surprised by their running order. I thought it opened the door up for us just a little because I wouldn’t have gone with that line up. I would have started with Mika and Souquet. I thought Tony Robles had a real, tough week but his was the match of the day for me. He was asked and boy did he deliver! I would also like to say thank you to Kim Davenport who was with us the whole time and played a big part in helping get the team regrouped after day three. Being captain has been great but it’s been the hardest thing I’ve had to do, watch but not play.” Jones “Three years ago I had the chance to pot the winning 9-ball, ironically against Marcus Chamat so to have the opportunity again was a real blessing. Winning the US Open and now this puts me up there with players like Earl and Johnny; guys who have done things in this game that most other players haven’t. I want to take my hat off to the two debutantes who both won huge matches on our way to the win.” Robles “I play Mika a lot in New York and when his name came up I knew I had a chance because I know his game well. I was determined to win whoever it was. Today was the proudest day of my career. I’ve watched all these guys growing up and it was

His father and grandfather before him had Cassem’s restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb of Charleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. From age 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn, Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placed second in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966). In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the bars and

out of the rooms where stiffer competition would have honed his game. His stroke subsided completely until his mid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coors statewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981. Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80’s, his game went dormant again until he sold his business and

returned to school. At age 48, he completed his undergraduate work in theology, and earned Master’s degrees in Marriage & Family Counseling and Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skills and has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. match ,which he wins. In Part Seven, Keating and the Brat face off in the prelim finals. After a bitter, intense match, Keating advances to the state playoffs. Part Eight features the Keating in the state finals at the Galleria. A tough competitive match develops between Keating and Tony Ever Ready Reyes. Down in the match to Reyes, Keating takes a break, is confronted by the ghost of old Charley Sturgis, a former teacher, and then returns to the match. In Part Nine, Keating struggles for control of the match. His persistence pays off when finally Reyes fouls and leaves Keating with ball in hand. The story continues . . . EVER READY, SUDDENLY AT BOILING POINT, SNAPPED HIS CUE down on the table and broke it off just above center into pieces. For a moment I thought I had seen a reincarnation of Danny the Brat. Reyes snorted a few expletives then went to his chair, uncased a new upper shaft for his cue, assembled it and sat down as if nothing at all had happened. “What is it about you, Keating?” Joe snarled, “guys act like the full moon’s out when they’re playin’ you.” He muttered, “serves the little wimp right.” “Time out!” Reyes screeched suddenly. Then he walked hurriedly toward the restrooms. “What the – “ Joe exclaimed. “Nothing to be alarmed about, Joe,” I said, “he’s taking his break time.” Standing, I reached my cue out to Joe and said, “Be back in a few minutes. Watch my stick for me.” “No problem Swami,” Joe said grabbing the cue and setting it against his chair. Spreading his arms and waving them downward, he said, “mind if I chat with Linda Jo while I’m guarding the holy grail?” Grinning, I spun around and shot Joe with my thumb and forefinger, then kept walking. Elbowing my way through the shoppers, I nosed through the double doors to the concierge’ desk. Empty. A Mercedes wheeled around the corner and stopped under the breezeway. The door opened, the valet slipped out. A white-haired older looking man

handed the valet a tip and wiggled into the Benz. The valet crossed over to the concierge desk, then glanced up. “Boss Rickling around,” I asked. “Boss Rickling? Who’s that?” he asked. “Boss Rickling,” I repeated, the concierge. “Dunno a Boss Rickling,” He said politely, fiddling with some paperwork. He looked up, eyed me strangely and said, “Tandy’s the concierge, fella, n’ he’s out for a bite to eat.” Eyeing his watch, he said, “Be back in couple minutes.” Something I can help you with?” I chuckled nervously, “You telling me that you’ve never heard of Boss Rickling?” “No Sir, never heard of ‘em, Mister.”

Pause. His eyes moved beyond me, “There’s Tandy the concierge now, If n’ ya want to ask’im.” Dressed in a well pressed, spiffy uniform, Tandy was gentle looking and black, but not Boss Rickling. As Tandy drew closer, the valet eyed him and said, “Any chance ya know a Boss Rickling?” “Boss Rickling?” Tandy reflected, stopping short of me. “Sure do know a Boss Rickling.” I sighed thankfully. “Quite a loss,” he said, gazing off into street. “Been about a year now since he passed on.” He turned his eyes back toward me and added, “Was the concierge here for a bunch of years. Fine gentleman. You know ‘im?” he asked.

Part 10 In Part One, Carter Keating, college graduate and former Special Operative returns home from a tour of duty in the Colombian jungles. Gracie, his significant other, has dumped him for someone else. He enrolls in the local police academy and meets new friend, Joe Lauterette. Later, Elizabeth, a new companion, seeing his love for the game, inspires him to enter the Texas Eight Ball Championships. The story continues as he ponders the decision. Part Two finds Keating and Lauterette at a local restaurant, talking about his former passion for the game, and the role that Jimmy the Stick Gadwell and old Charley Sturgis had in teaching him to be a young prodigy at only eighteen. Part Two ends as Keating decides to fish his cues out of mothballs and prepare for the tournament. Part Three has Keating working on his game in Sharky’s, a popular Houston hangout. In the interim, Danny the Brat approaches Keating for a game. A verbal confrontation ensues and the Brat storms off pouting. Later Linda Jo Minard, a local singer and pretty good player, approaches Keating while he practices. Part Four continues as Keating befriends Linda Jo. As he leaves Sharky’s another confrontation almost develops between Keating and the Brat’s cohorts. Later, Keating, Lauterette, Linda Jo, and Elizabeth anxiously await the pairings for the Texas Prelims. The story continues as Keating and his first opponent, an Asian pair off in an eight ball race to five. In Part Five, Keating beats the Asian handily and wins a testy second match. Given a schedule break, Keating skates out for a burger. The Brat’s cronies confront him in the parking lot and Keating deals with the two bullies. In Part Six, someone steals his Corvette from the Galleria parking lot. Short on time, he runs back to Sharky’s in a cold rain, is run down by a biker and injures his leg. A kind old man takes him to Sharky’s just in time to make his

Artistic Pool Clinic

5800 198th St SW, Ste 19 Lynnwood, WA 98036

There is something new for the state of Washington. The second Artistic Pool Clinic. What is artistic pool? “Artistic” by dictionary defination means beauty, skillfully, and tastefully done, aesthetically pleasing... Relating to or characteristic of one who is skilled in public performance or one who exhibits artistry or skill in his or her work. Art is a skill or “knack”. Artistic Pool is the umbrella word for these skills and/or “knacks”. Artistic Pool has 8 disciplines, Trick and / or Fancy, “Prop”/ “Novelty”/ Special Arts, Draw, Follow, Bank/Kick, Stroke, Jump, and Masse. The Artistic Pool Clinic will be held at Harvey’s Billiards in Renton, Washington on Jan. 24th & 25th, 2004. The cost for the clinic is $175.00. You will not be charged for table time. This is a two day clinic. The instructor for this clinic is Ken “Sarge” Aylesworth who holds a World Record in Artistic Pool. Sarge’s World Record is: Most points scored for the four hardest disciplines of Artistic Pool, (Masse, Jump, Stroke, Bank/Kick), for any Continental Qualifier ever held. He set this record in October of 2001 at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower California when he competed in the 2002 North American Artistic Pool Championship. Sarge will be teaching the first three shots of all eight disciplines during the two day clinic for a total of 24 shot/challenges. The shot/challenges come directly from the 40 shot program that is used for the Artistic World Championship at the professional skill level. Each student will receive the 40 shot program. Sarge Sarge will be giving up numerous secrets that have cost him 10’s of thousands of hours of practice. This clinic is not just a knowledge clinic, it will be a “hands on” clinic where each student will execute all 24 shots. This clinic is designed for the intermediate/advanced player, but is open to anyone who wishes to learn. If you fall into one of those categories and possess a good stroke or a great stroke, this clinic is for you! Well the rumor is “TRUE”! Sarge will be holding the 2nd Washington State Amateur Artistic Pool Championship on Feb. 28th & 29th, 2004, also at Harvey’s Billiards, 4100 East Valley Rd, Renton, WA. If you would like to learn some Trick Shot Magic, you had better sign up and pay to reserve your spot. The class size will be limited. You can sign up with and pay Bert Harvey or Sarge and his wife Charli. For more information call Sarge at (206)719-2695. OTB

BILLIARDS WORLDCUP ASSOCIATION - BOARD from: Pierre A. Cornelissen, President BWA

On dec, 6 th an extraordinary general assembly of the BWA took place in Oosterhout (Nl). The BWA board announced that they will lay down office effective immediately and that they will look only after the current business untill the Statutory General Assembly to be held in the first quarter of next year (2004). Irresolvable problems, arised during the negociations with the players to renew their contracts, have taken away the elementary basis to continue the activities. The BWA will continue to exist as an association for professional billiard players and it is now a matter of giving birth to a new and workable concept that is acceptable to all parties. This will have to be proposed at the statutory general assembly where also a new board has to be elected; date and place will be communicated in due time. The resigning board invites creative minds and candidate board members to join forces to reach a solution in the interest of professional billiards. St. Louis, MO — BILLIARD CLUB television, pool’s only weekly TV show, is now available for viewing online at www.billiardclub.net. Three one-hour BCtv shows are available 24/7 for free, unlimited viewing to all registered users. A new BCtv episode will be posted each week giving viewers a fresh look and extended opportunities to watch the two previous weekly programs. To watch BCtv, simply visit www.billiardclub.net and click on the video player image on the front page to open the interactive player. New users are required to register with a valid email address and a personal password for their free membership. Each new member will receive an email confirmation of registration. The process takes less than a minute to complete and the video is then available for viewing. The online broadcast programs are the same as the cable TV broadcast seen on Empire Sports Network and Sunshine Network but without the network commercial spots. The BCtv spot ads will remain. The cable TV schedule, times and other information are available online at www.billiardclub.net. Presently, BCtv is featuring the 2002 Mosconi Cup through the end of 2003 to help promote this year’s Mosconi Cup at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. BILLIARD CLUB network, producer of BCtv, plans to offer other event inventory for online viewing along with the weekly episodes. The 2003 US Open 9-Ball Championship event should be available in their complete unedited versions by Christmas. Viewers will all be treated to stockpile of video content from various regional pool tours, including the Viking Cue Tour, the Falcon Cue Tour and the Joss Northeast Tour. To submit content for broadcast on BCtv, call 1-866-774-8770. “Contrary to the Billiard media pundits with the doomsday outlook for pool, this is a very exciting time,” said Rob Sykora, BCn president. “BILLIARD CLUB tv has more weekly broadcast hours than any other pool programming in the United States and that includes ESPN. Plus, the number of weekly viewing households we’re reaching is growing at a rapid pace due to our consistent and reliable weekly schedule. But, since we’re not in every cable TV market nationwide just yet, we’ve launched this online channel to provide a more direct and targeted delivery of BCtv to the core billiard marketplace. The best part for the viewer is that it’s available 24/7 and it’s free to everyone who wants to watch as often as they like.” BCn contracted Eonstreams of Knoxville, TN <http:// www.eonstreams.com> to develop the media player and administer the broadcasting of the online video stream. “The interactive video player has great functionality,” said Emma Woods, Project Manager for Eonstreams. “A billiard sports fan can browse the net, read breaking news articles, and even engage in discussion in a popular online forum, all while watching BCtv in the upper half of the player.” “Linking to the sponsors and advertisers who support the program was a key ingredient to bringing the project to fruition,” added Sykora. “The advertising and promotional opportunities we’ve now created for billiard industry merchants, product manufacturers and corporate sponsors are more dynamic than any other billiard media outlet and we’re confident that our members will show their support to the companies that helped make this happen.” OTB

Resurection - Part 10

(continued from page 21)

“Er . . . Ye . . .es, yes sir.” I stammered. My head turned down, my eyes stared a hole through the concrete. I was speechless. Turning slowly around, I breathed in deeply, then slowly headed to the double doors, confused. “You alright, son?” Tandy called out, raising his voice. “Yeah,” I said weakly, as the double doors closed behind me. A pervasive, permeating chill ran through me. Could it have been my imagination? Charley had said, “I’ll always be with you.” I shook off the implications and shot back into the Galleria. Suddenly a calmness had come over me, and it seemed to be enough. THE CROWD APPLAUDED LIGHTLY WHEN I CAME BACK into the arena. I gestured to them and went to my chair. Reyes had already returned, and was eyeing his shot. Joe handed me my cue. “Take an act of God for him to wiggle out of this one. He chuckled. Nod. Ever Ready had settled down and regained his composure. His posture was again confident. Though snookered, he had a different walk and theme in his manner. In the upper right corner pocket, the seven laid dead in the pocket. For Reyes to make the shot, he’d have to go three rails, a highly risky and illogical shot. Positioning himself, he eyed the rail, backed off, and studied the shot some more. Then suddenly smiled just enough for me to notice. Calmly he reset himself. To everyone’s surprise, he jacked his stick up slightly, stroked his cue several times, and then followed through. I didn’t see the shot until the last moment. Reyes was attempting to drive the cue ball into the rail so that it jumped backwards off the rail, went airborne over the cluster, and eventually rolled the seven into the jaws of the upper corner pocket. The cue ball went airborne, cleared three other balls and headed straight down the table to the seven. Striking the seven solidly into the pocket, it hit the upper rail, loped to the center of the table and stopped. The shot was tantamount to Willie Mays famous over the shoulder catch in the Polo Grounds. The crowd went nuts. The noise was deafening. Ever Ready lit up. He through back his shoulders and looked up to his fans and nodded, but quickly gathered his attention back to the table. Bitten once, he was reluctant to let it happen again. “Geez,” Joe said, “is that legal?” Nod. “And a super shot,” I said, “didn’t see it myself till the last moment.” Ever Ready, the endorphins working overtime, ran out the table and took a six four lead. With the momentum back, he attacked the diamond cluster by uncoiling his body and powering the cue ball into the next rack. If the fifteen object balls had been filled with dynamite the break would have blown the arena to pieces. The cue ball, as if choreographed, jumped up just enough for the table to clear out under it

then drifted to the side rail and rebounded softly to the center of the table. Three balls tumbled off the table into pockets, two stripes and a solid. Again the crowd got into the act, responding boisterously, bellowing hoots, howls and whistles. “Get the feelin’ they like this guy, Keating?” Joe quipped. Nod. “Listen Keating, if it comes down to people takin’ sides, n’ it gets physical when this is over, hope ya don’t mind if I go with the crowd.” Nod. Ever Ready steadily, methodically ran the table. Seven four. Three more wins and he’d be on the hill. A wide charismatic grin spread wide on his face as he bowed like an actor completing a Broadway play. The crowd clapped heartily. Ever Ready knew how to bring his whole intimidating package to the match. “Force your mind away from the intimidation, Charley Sturgis’ ghost whispered. “Whatever it takes, don’t buy into your opponent’s tactics.” Taking in a deep breath, I slumped down in my chair, eased my head against my shoulder, closed my eyes, opened my mouth, and pretended to snore lightly. Ever Ready turned in my direction and apparently stopped in his tracks when he saw me. Slowly the crowd noticed. Like a wave moving quietly across the room, they caught on as the laughter started slow and increased. Playing my cards to the hilt, I breathed in deep and snorted. “Senor!” he growled, and tapped me on the shoulder. “Uhhh . . . yeah,” I replied, in a slumbering stupor. “We play pool or not?” he reprimanded arrogantly. “Uhhh . . . yeah,” I taunted, “my shot?” “Eeess my shot, Gringo. Eees my shot!” “Oh,” I said, sat up in my chair and stretched my eyes wide. He eyed me angrily then crossed back over to the table. Again, I slumped down in my chair. The crowd laughed. Ever Ready turned, looked at me, then raced over and complained to the referee. “Keating,” Joe mumbled, “you’re driving him ballistic.” “Elbow me, Joe,” I muttered through my teeth.” “Huh.” “Elbow me, Joe.” He did. Like a student caught sleeping by the teacher, I snapped up and sat alert. Stretching my eyes again as though I’d just woken from eight hours of sleep, I looked around as though I was lost. The crowd laughed, Ever Ready steamed, and the advantage had been won.

December 13-14, 2003 Zablan Triumphs in $10,000.00 9-Ball Tournament The $10,000.00 Aloha Open 9-Ball tournament held at Hawaiian Brian’s Billiards played to a packed house and included drawings for thousands of dollars in prizes and opportunities for pool players to prove they’ve “got game”. The 128 player field was filled nearly two weeks before the start of the popular Honolulu tournament. The “race to three” finals pitted unbeaten Lance Uyeda from the winner’s bracket and old-timer “Hawaiian Jay” Zablan emerging from the losers bracket. Winning the toss of the coin and the first break, Jay made the nine-ball on the break, then coasted to a 3-0 victory to claim the $3,500.00 first place check and the commemorative Hawaiian Brian’s 18k gold ring. such an honour to be a part of all this. Kim Davenport had everything to do with our win, he’s played a big part as well.” Archer “We’re here to win and this has turned into a big event and emotions run high. Animosity is created because once this starts, they’re not our friends, because you can’t beat your friends. We’re all trying to win but when it’s over we shake hands and become friends again. It would have meant just as much for them to have won so we don’t feel bad about it. Morris “This is like a second chance for me after my break from the game. It’s my greatest feeling and a real kickstart for me personally. I hope us winning this event will increase pool’s popularity.” Williams “Even though I didn’t make a point for the team this was my favourite Mosconi Cup because of the atmosphere. It was the most exciting with the most emotions and I’m proud to be on the team.” Strickland “It’s great to win. I told Charlie he’s the first guy not to make a point on the winning team but it was a team effort. We know the Europeans have a great team but our guys are good too and we showed what we are capable of.” OTB

which turns out to give the two points on the balls that actually make contact at “CP.” This demonstrates that the stick is almost never pointed at the spot on the object ball you actually want to contact. Geometry tells us the cut angles for each of these four cardinal fullnesses of hit. Full ball is pretty obviously a cut of zero degrees. Half ball is 30 degrees, which can be shown pretty easily with equilateral triangles, if you retain some of your high school geometry or mechanical drawing. It’s a little harder to work out that 3/4 full is a cut of 14.48 degrees, and 1/4 full cuts the ball 48.59 degrees. A friend of mine memorized the cut angles for thicknesses down to 64ths, so he could tell you that 51/64ths full is a cut of 12 degrees. I think the 1/2 ball angle is plenty for most people, since you have to judge the angles by eye anyway. Even if you don’t use the idea of fractional ball hits to aim, it is very useful to describe how full a shot is hit. In future columns, I’ll cover some other common aiming systems. OTB
