Letter to the Editor: I travel for business often and find myself more frequently in the San Jose, CA area. I found a couple of really good places to shoot pool while on the road. While at the California Billiards Club, I found a copy of your publication “The Break”. I was excited to see that such a publication existed. I enjoyed reading the contents and was very jealous that I have not seen any publication like this in the North East area. As I enjoy competion, I was very interested in the listing of places to find tournament play on a daily basis in multiple states. Are you aware of, and can point me to, any publications like yours in the North East so I can subscribe to it. Additionally, I wanted to see if you had any advice on how to travel with your own pool cue due to all the hightened security measures in the airports. I do not believe, I would be able to carry a pool cue onto an airplane. I assume security would look upon it as a potential weapon..... Of course it is only a weapon when used by me on the pool table : ) But seriously, I am concerned about the value of my cue and “just anybody” being able to get to them easily. Thank you for any assistance and advice you can offer. Regards; Paul LaVerdiere There are no publications to my knowledge in the Northeast covering regional tournaments. Traveling with your cue can be done by shipping it Fedex or UPS overnight to your destination. Be sure to insure it for more than the value of the cue.

9-BALL RENO OPEN RESULTS from: Gene Miller

$24,000 added by the Sands

1st - $12,500: RICHIE OREM Richie, a 26 year-old resident of Florida who spent most of his life in Fairbanks, Alaska, played his first Reno Open when he was 19. This was his second trip to Reno. This week he had several moments he will remember for a long time: He snapped in the 9-ball against Cliff Joyner to win 9-8 and leave Cliff in fourth place. About an hour later, he defeated Tony Chohan on the one-loss side with a 29 combination that missed but then rebounded across the table and found a

hole. He then went on to defeat Gabe Owen with another 9-ball break to win 9-7 and force the final match, which he won 9-5 for the $12,500 top prize. To reach the finals, Richie beat Jim Gottier, Mike Bredehoft, Ike Runnels, Jim Kuykendall, lost to 19 year-old Justin

2nd - $6,000: Gabe Owen Gabe began with a bye, then proceeded to the hotseat with wins over Ronnie Wiseman, David Krolick, Mark Tadd, Jonathan Pinegar, Ernesto Dominguez, and Justin Bergman.

3rd - $3,250: Tony Chohan

Tony defeated Jonny Warren, Santos Alarenga, Ted Banas, Dan Louie, Mark Haddad, Jose Parica, Sparky Farrell, lost to Gabe Owen and Richie Orem.

4th - $2,100: Cliff Joyner

Cliff defeated Tony Casas Jr., Al Markasky, George Michaels, Dan Wallace, Keith Bennett, lost to Justin Bergman, defeated Rafael Martinez and Sparky Ferrell before losing to Richie Orem. Bergman, then defeated Bobby Hunter, Jose Parica, Bill Ganne, Justin Bergman, Cliff Joyner, and Tony Chohan.

USPPA in RENO Well, you had to be there! This was the 44th trip to the Sands for 9-ball enthusiasts from several countries, all presented by the USPPA and the Sands Regency hotel. There were 162 players in both events, and the Early Bird drew 105. Computer problems and other unexpected woes led to a weird looking draw for the Early Bird, but we got through it okay and Skip Miller (78 avg) won the $900 top prize. All matches were race-to-five, and the four players finishing 5th thru 8th each won $85, covering their entries for both the Early Bird and the main event. Skip began with wins over W. Van Alst (34), Gilbert Arellano (86), Kristen Cobb (74), Dante Rakin Sr. (80), Larry Austin (67), and Gene Peregrino (67). His opponent in the finals was Tom Passow (39) who defeated Jeff Padjan (111), Elmer Diwa (82), Travis Reil (90), Jay Valdez (69), Keith Arnold (53) and Bret Baker (63) before his loss to Skip in the finals. Tom’s 2nd place share was $475. Both events were under the expert direction of Scott Smith, along with a staff of Kenny Shuman, Gilbert

Arellano, Frank Giordano, myself, and of course, busiest of all of us, Tony Annigoni. Adrian Annigoni, Tony’s youngest son, became sales manager for the popular Hustlin apparel and did very well. If you plan a trip to Derby City next month, that will be Adrian once again in the Hustlin booth. The 16 pool tables were Diamond Smart tables with the polka-dot cue ball. Tony Annigoni, USPPA director, announced that the Sands will now host only the December event, while the June event will take place at Hard Times in Sacramento. Later during the week he announced that the USPPA has begun its own Hall Of Fame, and the first inductees are Jose Parica and the late Denny Searcy, a San Francisco legend. Also notable: Billy Teeter awarded a custom $2,000 cue stick to the winner of the open event, and Dave Jacoby donated a $3,000 Jacoby cue stick, raffled off to a USPPA member to be announced Christmas Eve. (l to r) George Michaels, Francisco Murcia (owner Billiard Palacade), Ernesto Dominguez from: Gene Miller

Francisco and Mirna Murcia went allout, as usual, in preparation for the Winter Warmup open 9-ball tournament held at their Billiard Palacade Saturday & Sunday, December 16 & 17. Ernesto Dominguez came in and recovered all tables and we had new sets of balls with “Pro Cup” cue balls. For the first time we had free parking! As always, there was lots of free food for the players both days. The $2,000 added prize money (more than half the total purse!) put almost half the 36-player field in the money. Many players appreciated the unusually mellow music Mirna chose for the tournament, and as we got down to the final eight players, all games, music, and the coin-op pool table were shut down in respect to the players. Even though the event didn’t attract the expected field,

Francisco remains enthusiastic and wants to do another one in February. The action began at 3:00 Saturday afternoon and we had cut from 36 to 16 players by about 8:00. They were all guaranteed at least $65 when they returned Sunday. All matches were best 6 of 11 g a m e s , alternate b r e a k s , d o u b l e elimination, except the final match which was a single race to eleven. Midway through the first day we took a break for the 9-ball breakpot, and nobody made the $500 9-ball but Eddie Leon had the 6th ticket, winning $50. The breakpot kitty gained $101 in the process. 36 players x $45 = $1,620 Green fees: -$180 Added by Palacade: $2,000 Total purse: $3,440

1st $1,150 George Michaels defeated Ernesto Reyes, Taylor Townsend, Rylan Hartnett, Ernesto Dominguez, and Sonny Orquiza to reach the finals. Draw Discipline Here’s another great Artistic Pool Shot/Challenge. This shot is from the Draw Discipline and has a Degree of Difficulty (DOD) of 7. Object ball letters coincide with corresponding pocket letters. To set this shot up position F ball per grid one diamond segment off of the foot cushion and one diamond segment off of #4, (long rail), cushion. The A ball is centered between the pocket points. The International Brotherhood of Cueist Union from: Tom Dennehy

To all members and all future members of The International Brotherhood of Cueist Union: 1. What is the players’ union going to do for you? Thirty percent of all union dues goes to added money to approximately 12 tournaments a year. This money is held by the union and paid to the winner and up to as many places as we can, so every union member has the opportunity to get back his union dues for the year, which is only $85.00 a year, so it turns out to be a win, win situation for all union players. Other important benefits the union will be offering union players (starting approximately October 2007) will be health insurance, eye glasses and dental insurance and disability insurance, all at discounted group rates. 2. What happens to the rest of the money? Two thirds of the money the union holds, 10-20% of that money will go to a point system which will be paid out at the end of the year’s final tournament. 3. Who decides what tournaments the union is going to add money to? This is done by the Board of Directors, consisting of six individuals, and in the event of a tie it will be decided by a coin toss at a tournament event which everyone can witness. 4. How will you know how much money the union has left at the end of the year? Each member will receive a financial statement at the end of the year. 5. Point system? We are working on a point system so that the player with the most points will receive a cash award at the end of each year. 6. Entry fees at tournaments? If the entry fee is $75.00 all non-union members will have to pay $100.00. The additional $25.00 for all those who don’t belong to the union, 70% of that money will be paid into the pension fund which will be divided into every individuals’ account. Being a union member would certainly be advantageous. If you have any further questions please call me at 603-747-3187.

line X. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball to F ball and draw back to A ball. You must make both object balls as pocket letter designated. The cue ball may contact an extra cushion before making A ball. A scratch is also allowed. Here are some helpful hints on executing this shot. Don’t raise the butt of your cue to get draw. Keep your cue as level to the plane of the table as possible, ie. lower your bridge hand. Pay close attention to how low you are cueing the cue ball. Don’t use excessive power. Make sure your warm-up strokes are smooth and don’t forget to follow-through on your execution stroke.

One Pocket Strategy

Email Questions to: jewett@sfbilliards.com harada@sfbilliards.com mejia@sfbilliards.com

By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy Last month I went over the basic rules of one pocket. If you missed that issue, go to the On The Break News website to catch up. A good site for both rules and suggestions on playing one pocket is www.onepocket.org where you can find the complete rules, history of the game, and stories about legendary players. Briefly the rules are: each player gets one of the corner pockets, and you have to make any 8 balls in your pocket before the other player makes 8 in his. You get to shoot again if you make a ball in your pocket. The golden strategy at one pocket is to never leave your opponent any easy shot to his pocket, and preferably no shot at all. How to do that, and how to overcome an opponent who does that well is at least half the game. It is useful to be able to make Bob Jewett a ball from time to time, but you should have that skill down pretty well from other games before taking up one pocket. In Shot 1 is the typical result of your opponent’s break. You have no obvious shot for your pocket, marked by A. Inspecting the remainder of the rack, it looks like the 6-7 is a dead combination to your pocket, but if the gaps between the balls are in the wrong places, it will either not have enough speed to get to the pocket or will be kissed out by the other balls. Pass on these unless you are sure.

A very standard response is to play the cue ball to hit the three ball, go to the end rail and then slide between the 2 and the cushion to leave the cue ball at B. If you leave the cue ball nearly in the jaws of your opponent’s pocket, he will have little to shoot at. The problem with this safety is that if the cue ball touches the 2 ball after the rail, it may scratch. Suppose you don’t scratch, but the cue ball ends up about where the 2 is. In that case, your opponent will have an easy bank for the 1 ball since you moved the 3 out of the way while attempting the safe. A similar shot that doesn’t leave the bank is to play the cue ball directly to the cushion at C to knock the 2 up the table. The does have the potential to scratch, and requires a very precise hit on the 2. A word about banks. You have to be able to make them at all speeds and with various kinds of English. Short banks like the 1 ball cross-corner that you might leave your opponent in the paragraph above should be automatic. On difficult banks, you have to be able to leave the cue ball somewhere very safe and the object ball within a diamond of your pocket if it misses. You will learn how speed and English change the bank angles if you play one pocket. Back to our problem. Often after the break you will find the original head ball where the 4 is. An easy shot is to bank that straight across to your side of the table and leave the cue ball on the cushion at D. The main thing is to get the speed right to leave the cue ball frozen or nearly frozen so any ball near your opponent’s pocket is harder to shoot. Note that you are not trying to get the 4 near your pocket, but rather just over to your side of the table. Maybe you will have a long bank on it later, but mostly you don’t want it on your opponent’s side. A more aggressive shot, but one that takes quite a bit more skill, is to bank the 5 toward your pocket and leave the cue ball against the top of the rack where the “X” is. If the 5 hits the 8 ball, both of them will move toward your pocket. If the 5 misses the 8 ball, you have to be careful not to hit it so hard that it bounces back across the table to your opponent’s side. If you leave the cue ball stuck on the rack, and an object ball near E, your opponent has no shot and no safety to play. The required soft, dead draw is not easy to master.

A Positive Resolution

Samm Diep (c) December 2006 What do you do when you miss a shot or scratch? How do you react when your opponent plays a safety on you? How about when your opponent gets a lucky roll and hooks you? Do you get angry? Do you swear or shout? Does it affect your next shot? Most likely, if you react negatively, that attitude carries over to your next shot. Have you ever been so angry with what you were facing that it consumed you? Were you so flustered and overwhelmed by the thoughts of “I can’t believe I did that!” or “That sucked!” or “What a crappy roll!”? Believe it or not, those negative feelings can influence the decisions we make and how Samm Diep we execute them. I remember the days of being an incredibly emotional player. I wore everything on my sleeve. You could tell if I hooked myself or if I got perfect shape. And, you could definitely tell that I was going to miss my next shot by how affected I was from the previous one. I expressed every single feeling towards every single shot. By the end of each match, whether I won or lost, I was completely emotionally depleted. It’s taken me years to gradually overcome this natural response and step towards a new outlook for each shot. It’s not an easy transition to completely separate yourself from your emotions during a match, but just give it a try and you’ll begin noticing immediate benefits. During this transition, look around. Notice the players in the room that pound their cue into the ground and yell and scream profanities at the balls. How silly do they look? (Nothing personal, if this is you.) What did that change? Now, watch Allison, Thorsten, Karen, and many of the other top pros. Notice their calmness and lack of response, regardless of what shot they face. During competition, this flat affect strengthens their consistency. Every ounce of negative energy wasted on reacting to something in the past, something that you can not change, drains you. Better yet, redirect that energy and focus on something you can change. You can not change the outcome from the previous shot, but you can change and control what happens next with the actions you take. Why allow yourself to waste all that energy reacting to what your opponent did to you? It still doesn’t change what you need to do. Rather, use that energy to determine which rail to kick at or how to play a nasty safety. Try this: When you’re hooked or faced with a tough shot, whether you did it to yourself or your opponent left it for you, try to approach the table with a feeling of thankfulness. Be thankful to have a shot. Whether you like it or not, a shot is a chance to win. So, don’t piss and moan about what you left yourself or if you get out of line. Redirect that energy! If your opponent left you that same tough shot, you would be thankful to be at the table again. Appreciate the fact that you’re at the table and make the best of it. Nobody said it would be easy. In fact, not reacting at all can even affect your opponent. I love it when my opponent gets all bent out of shape and jumps out of their seat because they can’t tell if I have a shot or not. I’m not saying that you can’t be a great player if you show your emotions, but just don’t allow it to consume you. So, as you’re making out your list of resolutions add this one to it and make it a positive year, every year. I wish you and your family a Happy & Prosperous New Year! Part II: Gold Crown Tables Enter a real room operator to the business, Jimmy and Dorothy Wise took over the Golden Cue room and brought true management and promotional skills to the Portland metro area. Jimmy was an old time player and Dorothy was a World Champ. They operated the room until Jimmy died and Dorothy went to work for Fischer a large table manufacturer. Dad and I traveled all over Washington, Oregon, Northern California and Idaho setting up over three thousand tables of all different Pat Sheehan colors and models. The largest room was in Everett, Washington, in October 1963. It was over 30 tables and we had to hurry for my wedding was to be on the 19th and the practice and dinner was Friday night and we were finishing up early that morning. Just in time. We got back and Saturday Brigid and I were married at Holy Redeemer Church and off to San Francisco for a quick honeymoon and back to set up Sam’s Hollywood Billiards. We were so busy that the days just ran together. The year before Dad and I had talked my Uncle Tony and Aunt Olive to move from Chicago and put in a billiard room with us. They came out and we did a 16 table room on the second floor over the Virginia Café and the Embers. Shortly after we opened the Columbus Day storm hit and Wayne’s Billiard Academy was the only place that had lights and a roof overhead while the west hills had no power for two weeks. Grand Central Bowl was full of water and Amato’s was in darkness. Tony made so much money that he bought Dad and I out. He ran a very successful room until he retired. The 6100 series was replaced by the Gold Crown II and our work was a lot easier. The GCII had the adjustable foot and the apron extrusions were cut down to 4, each 1 foot pieces on the long apron and they added the extrusions to the ball box. These tables were a piece of cake to set up and recover and are still the most sought after used table in the U. S. Most of the fat ladies skirts have been removed and the bowling alley colors have been changed to natural stains or black. They are still my favorite table and remained in the line till the mid ‘70’s. Brunswick could no longer be competitive as their costs went up and the other manufacturers were able to produce a smaller markup. The Gold Crown III came along after I was no longer a Brunswick dealer, but I have had plenty of exposure to them. The castings lost their color almost at once and the rubber was goofy. The frame was light-weight and they began to fall apart before your eyes. They had begun to lose their reputation as a force in the billiard business and a flood wiped out Brunswick’s plant in Virginia and they finally went out of the billiard business in the 80’s. It would be several years before they would come back but no longer manufactured their own products, but found sub contractors that could produce equipment at a price that they could be in the business and make a profit. Thanks to engineers like Marvin Eisenhauer who set the standards required and Jim Balukas to market the tables. Brunswick came back and the Gold Crown IV became the new standard of pool tables. I remained out of the Brunswick loop since I was a table manufacturer but still feel the awe of that company’s name. I have not had a great deal of experience with the IV and have only set up those that have changed homes. I have had several sets of rails to change rubber and have seen several that have had Artimas or other K66 rubber attached. The table is great except that the braces in the long direction have been forgotten. They now have adjustments in the frame to level the slate and all the new

BANKS

The Long Way Freeze the 1-ball and the 2-ball as shown. Hit the 1-ball from the given cue b a l l position a n d watch w h a t happens. The 2ball is thrown into the rail and o u t again, but sometimes picks up enough sidespin to hit the right end rail and rebound into the upper left corner pocket. Don’t bet on it. At the bottom, the percentage is a little higher. Both balls are one ball width from the cushion, which seems to rule out a bank shot. But the 3-ball can be banked with the help of sidespin transferred from the cueball. Kick-back strategy The game is eight-ball and you have the solids. The 8-ball is blocking the c o r n e r pocket. It wouldn’t help to make the 7-ball, and while there are various ways to play safe off the right side of the 3-ball, they don’t improve your chances, and they give your opponent a chance to play safe in return. An ingenious play is to hit the 3-ball squarely with low backspin so that it banks off the end rail and back into the cueball. With the right speed, the cueball will end up near the 7-ball, and the 3-ball will be near the side pocket. You are now a big favorite to win because the 3-ball is away from the blocked pocket and it’s hard for your opponent to lay down a decent safety. The position shown is contrived, but the idea of banking a ball back into the cue ball is occasionally useful in safety play.

In Memory Of ...

Jeff Howard 1970 - 2006

Jeffrey L. Howard, 36, died unexpectedly of heart failure on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006. He was born Oct. 21, 1970, in Omaha, Neb., to Roger and Mary (Lauderdale) Howard. In 1992, he moved to the Bozeman area where he met and fell in love with his wife, Erin. They were married on Sept. 9, 2000. The joys of his life were his four-year-old daughter and two-year-old son. He was constantly amazed at how cool Jeff Howard it was to be a dad and would often say that being a husband and a father was the most rewarding part of his life. Jeff spent many years working at Bare’s Stove and Spa, most recently as the store manager. His work there was not just a job to him; it was truly part of his heart and soul. Jeff’s passions included fishing, playing pool, reading and rooting for his beloved football team, the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He is survived by his wife, Erin (Stephens); daughter, Cassidy; son, Connor; parents, Roger and Mary Howard; brother, Mike; sister, Kris; and grandparents, George and Leona Lauderdale. He was also blessed to have a large, loving extended family and a wide circle of close friends. He touched many lives. Jeff was truly loved and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to a fund for the children of Jeffrey L. Howard at Big Sky Western Bank, 106 E. Babcock St., Bozeman, MT 59715. Sam’ s 14-1 Resul ts Sam’s Result Justin Lilje returned to win yet another Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’s Billiards December 3. He topped a field of 18 players, beating Vinnie Mellott for first. Sam Rabito came in 3rd and Cristy Barsky of Hood River came in 4th. There were a number of runs over 20 in the tournament, but Justin’s run of 34 in the finals took the prize.

Mosconi Cup. The USA side had trailed 4-8, 6-9 and 10-12 and were only one shot away from losing the cup for only the third time in 13 years. But they kept fighting right until the end as Mike Davis and then Corey Deuel won the last two singles matches under intense pressure in front of a partisan packed out Dutch crowd. A delighted Archer said: “We were behind the whole week and I don’t know what to say about my guys. I’m choked up a bit. Earl and I know we let the team down today (they both lost their singles matches) and we were hurting but we gave it our all. “The European team outplayed us this week but we showed a lot of heart. and the European guys as well. It’s really tough to explain it, all you can do is your best.” Archer was full of praise for Matchroom Sport chairman Barry Hearn and the supporters who packed out the Cruise Terminal, Rotterdam and created an incredible atmosphere for each of the sessions. “Thank you to Barry Hearn for making this event happen. He’s the one that gets to sit back on his recliner and laugh at us as we make mistakes,” joked Archer.\ “Thank you to all the fans. You were against us but we knew what it would be like. You guys make the event. “If we didn’t have you guys we couldn’t come back. It makes it hard but gratifying when you win.”

Many of the players had a chance to play in the newly opened upstairs of Justin Lilje Sam’s Billiards, which has six 9-foot Brunswick tables in great condition. It’s a great addition, and it allowed Sam’s to bring back the billiard table, which has been in storage for over 20 years. The upstairs also offers a non-smoking environment. Thank you, Valerie. C.P.L. 2nd Annual

Midseason Tournament Rodders Grub and Pub in Oregon City recently hosted the 2nd Annual Cascade Pool League Midseason Tournament. Good players, mixed with players on the rise, met in this handicapped extravaganza, where over $2,300 in prize money was won. The three-day weekend league tournament drew over 80 different CPL players from over 44 league teams. They came to play one or all the special events. The three-day tournament featured hundreds of handicapped 9-Ball, 8-Ball, and Open Scotch Doubles games, played over eight tables. CPL operator Andrew Monstis started this annual event to provide CPL league players an opportunity to get together outside the regular weekly league match setting. Many CPL players play week in and week out throughout the entire year, some for years on end. These players, all part of a pool community, deserved the opportunity to do more than just show up weekly to qualify for the Chinook Winds Regional. Monstis believes that doing something for the players is vital, and plans for next year’s event to provide even more prize money. CPL is sanctioned by the BCAPL, using BCA rules and guidelines. Glenn Atwell, a long-

John Lewis

standing CPL member, gets main notice with the ‘hat trick’ this year. He won the Friday 9-ball and Saturday 8-ball singles events and the Sunday Scotch Doubles event with partner John Lewis. Glenn found himself fighting uphill handicapped battles all weekend … about 36 hours worth when the dust settled. Phil Rothschild gave Glenn a stiff startup match, leading 4-0, but Glenn persevered and faced Cody Johnson in the 9-Ball finals. Cody won the first set from Glenn but couldn’t double dip him. Cody is an up and coming player, having played only a year and a half. Glenn’s final 8-ball opponent was Todd Gooch, an established master player. In the Scotch Doubles finals, Glenn made a great 8-ball shot worth noting: Partially hooked, he launched the cue ball, caromed the 8-ball off another ball and into the air, and calmly watched while it fell neatly into his called corner pocket. It is great that a player of Glenn’s caliber supports league play, sharing his knowledge and giving up tips. This year’s surprise gems were Mickey Mixon and John Jacobs, who both placed high in all events. Big singles wins came from Susan Millhollin, Cathy Duenas and Steve Copher, who beat up on their share of higher ranked players during the 8ball event. Cody Glenn Atwell

Johnson & Tony Dunlap showed off some skills, playing very well. If you were watching, there was great shot making and position play by regional master level players including Steve Tune, Todd Gooch, Mike Dubendorf and Andrew Monstis. Other great match play was seen from Cecil (‘Don’t touch my hat!’) Pickett and Paris Brown. Ken Christensen, Dave Kartchner, and Jake Morin made players earn whatever they could get. The same was true for Eve Stockstill, who played great. She is getting tougher and gaining valuable experience. Returning Scotch Doubles team Julie Deboer and Mike Dubendorf brought their games again. Because of the h a n d i c a p s , predictability went out the window. Some people grumbled over Cody Johnson getting beat, but most just took their lumps. Some thought others received too much handicap, but many just played really well. It was hard for those who had to give up a spot, but it did even out many matches. Many players got an opportunity to beat players that they normally would not. The spot made it fun and grueling and always uncertain. Open level players could and did compete with the master players. Improved sportsmanship went to John Lewis

this year, while he continued to give players fits on the table. Sean Stevenson was running around trying to convince players not that he could play but that he was giving up too much spot… however, that didn’t really work to his advantage. And then there were Jennifer Windell and Chrissy Yanez, who provided entertainment on and off the table. Cathy Duenas did her part by being Kurt’s partner, and by getting Andrew his coffee in the morning. Vo l u n t e e r Tournament Directors Andrew Monstis and Kurt Hamm ran the tournament s m o o t h l y, l a r g e l y Glenn Atwell because Kurt could be seen taken bribes again when he had to make a call or do the draw. Andrew’s cool head, fielding the many questions and dealing with losers crying jags, kept it all running like clockwork. These guys worked over 50 hours to put on this tournament. An up and coming player from the Vancouver area is Todd Speakman, who recently won the Men’s Master Division during the Western BCA Regional 9-Ball tournament this past October. I had the opportunity to meet with Todd, snap a few photos and shoot some pool. He is a very competitive person and played both Varsity Baseball and Basketball in high school. I asked him about his experience winning Master’s and he remarked, “Winning Master’s at the Western BCA was unbelievable. After the last several years playing the tournament down there and watching the finals of a match, it was kind of surreal to find myself in that position being surrounded by all the great players that were there. I didn’t have to play any of the top, top players. There are, like you said, so many great players. They are obviously formidable opponents being in the Master’s that if you don’t have to play a Glenn Atwell or Schumacher right off the bat you can get deeper in the tournament. Then obviously shooting pool against the good players when I was deeper in the tournament made it the perfect tournament.” Todd had great training to reach this point. The twenty-eight year old player noted that he had only played a few games of pool before going to

Todd Speakman college. At the University of Washington, he was part of a group of 5 or 6 players that were very passionate about becoming the best around. The competition started on the dorm level. There were two 9 foot Brunswick Anniversary tables in the dorm and he had to beat the best in the dorms. From there he went to the HUB (Husky Union Building) where they had fifteen 9 foot Anniversary/ Centennial pool tables with better players. Todd and his friends would watch videos, read books and watched the gamblers at Dr Cues. They a l s o played pool every chance they got. “The first f e w years I would go to class and then play 8-10 hours a day. Got pretty good, pretty quick. Still lots to learn,” Todd said. He also competed in the ACUI Northwest College Regionals several times and mentioned, “I lost to those pesky Cougar players from Wazzu. They always seemed to get the better of me. I had several high finishes but never enough to go to Nationals.” When I asked Todd if he had any mentors, he responded, “Not really, basically all my friends. We all wanted to get better and got

inspired from each other. Eventually from the course of being in college for 5 years, you shoot so many balls and play so many games and learn different things from all the different media that’s out there, that you get better.” Todd’s father was a big influence on his love for the game. He was a good local bar player and used to bring home steaks and turkeys on Thanksgiving. “I never played pool with him one game until I was old enough to go into the bar at 21 and at that point I was already better than he was.” During college Todd played pool around the Seattle area at the 211 Club (which he used to sneak into), Dr Cues and in local bar tournaments. S i n c e graduating, Todd has moved back to the Vancouver area and started playing in the bar leagues with APA. He was moved to a 7 after the first week and that handicap hasn’t changed. His APA league play has resulted in winning two Tri-Cups, a win at Regionals to get to Nationals and play in Las Vegas for the last two years. Branching out he started playing in smaller B tournaments and recently won the Cadillac Ranch “B” Tournament (see March 2006 issue of The Break). He also started playing in the Western BCA leagues, where he could surround himself with better players on the same team, which was unlike the APA teams with their handicapping system. To his credit, he has finished well at Regionals of the Western BCA with a 3rd place finish in the Open “B” 8-ball, 7th/8th in the Open “A” 8-ball and won his first

January 2007

Master’s 9-ball tournament. Playing in different leagues during the week with sometimes as many as 4 league nights and tournaments on the weekends, Todd is always playing pool. He carries a custom made cue by Larry Schave, a Vancouver cuemaker. I asked him about his cue and he remarked, “It is a great looking cue that plays really well too. It was something I couldn’t get off the rack. I wanted it 59” since I’m 6’3”. After playing with 4 or 5 different cues in the course of learning, I kind of like a 19 ½ ounce cue, balanced correctly so it doesn’t feel like a heavy cue.” He went on to talk about his ability to play pool, “Obviously I’d like to get lessons, because I still feel that my stance is awkward and wrong. I grip the cue too far back. These are all little tiny things that someone could help me with by watching me play and give me pointers as well.” What does the future hold for Todd? He will be going to Las Vegas this year with his team to play at BCA Nationals and has decided to enter the singles event as well. I found Todd to be a focused, competitive young man who is eager to learn and become the best player he can be. In closing Todd added, “I would like to thank “The Break” for doing this. It’s not everyday obviously, that you get an article like this written about you. I know that there are plenty of other good players around the state and the Northwest that are way more deserving than I am. A lot of this comes from knowing ‘”Coyote” and I would like to thank him and B J for seeing my ability to be a player as well as Boomer and Merle, APA league operators in the Portland/ Vancouver area. The Western BCA put on a great tournament. They did a good job all around.”

Shotze’s League Season Complete Shotze’s has now completed its 5th season and just like the rest, it was a good one. This season consisted of (12) teams and a total of (36) players. This league was started to give the pool players in our area an opportunity to advance their game from 8-ball into the world of 9-ball and work with and watch those players who have been in the game of 9-ball for a few years. I have been able to see the improvement of several players games during this short period and expect to see many more. This league has gotten so big that we have actually had to turn a few away because there just hasn’t been room. This next season, which the meeting is on Jan 15th at 7pm, may be no exception. The standing rule of joining is: #1 - those who played in the last season have first choice, #2 - past players who want to rejoin & #3 - any new players hoping to join. We have already got a list of several players who fit into the #2 & #3 category’s. This year, though, we are going to try to make room for everybody. So if you are truly interested, plz join us at the meeting. This year our payout for the entire league was just short of $7,000. Every penny that the members put in is paid back out at 100% at the end of the year. Players have several different ways to earn money in this league. They are: #1 - $1

Treon Pham, Jim Conway, Don McMillin

paid for each game won, #2 - $1 paid for each 9-ball break during the reg league play, #3 - top (10) percentages overall & top (2) women percentages, #4 - 9-ball break pot during the reg play or mystery envelopes at the end of the season, & #5 - players who physically play in the singles tournament received cash for all places (even last). I honestly don’t believe there is a better league for the player out there anywhere in Washington state. The playoffs for this league is ran just the same way we do our big weekend tournaments. Longer races for the A side and shorter races for the B side and one long race for all the marbles in the finals. This season saw a new Champion

The rest of the playoffs ended up as follows: 1st $585 Treon Pham 2nd $408 Jim Conway 3rd $300 Don McMillin 4th $225 Pat Farison 5-6 $175 Lance Bauge & John Te 7-8 $140 Ed Slade & Marvin Holmes 9-12 $110 Scott Walton, Alan Buck, Randy Measor, Jeff Jimenez 13-16 $85 Joe McLaughlin, Manny Fernandez, Phil Wilson, Melanie Elder 17-24 $70 Bernie Foster, Marc Greenberg, Bill Irons, Ken Tran, Lyman Moss, Paul Haubiel, Steve Hicks, Jim Schumaker

crowned. He is our one and only adorable Treon Pham. Treon has come close in all the past playoffs but finally got over the hurdle and won it all. His matches were, Bernie F (7-5), Manny F (7-1), Marvin H (76), John T (7-3), his one and only loss against Jim Conway (8-9), Don Mc (6-3) and then the back to the finals. Jim Conway is a player that I have known for 20+ years and watched him win 8-ball league championships and tournaments in this area forever. Jim was also the very first winner for this league in the playoffs. Those who know Jim, know that he is no pushover in these league playoffs and this one was no exception. His matches were, Joe Mc (7-2), Jim S

(7-0), Pat F (7-2), Don Mc (7-4), Treon P (9-8), and then the finals. Everyone who was here to watch the point match between Treon and Jim was able to watch fabulous shot making and strategy play. Back and forth they went, game after game, and finally when Jim made the last 9-ball, he let out a holler and then quickly covered his mouth because he knew there was another match going on nearby. It defiantly was a stress reliever to get it over with. But it was only the beginning. Treon came back with only one goal on his mind and that was to give Jim a run for his money. Again the match started out with the games going back and forth with neither player giving the other any slack and the strategy play was coming from everywhere. I stated to a couple of the other players there that I could see this match going to a tie-breaker again and either player could come out winning it. But then, Treon started to get the upper hand. First one game and then another and before anyone knew it, he was ahead by (10-7) and on the hill. Jim wasn’t going to let it go easy but Treon kept up with pocketing one ball after another until the 9-ball was it and then it was over. The final score was (11-8). What a match to watch. Congratulations Treon. You earned the title of Champion the hard way.

UpStairs @ Sam’s Billiards Hollywood District By: Don “Cheese” Akerlow

Sam’s Billiards is moving up – to the second floor with a new poolroom. Valerie Schwartz, owner of Sam’s, has created a new space on the second floor that has a warm, inviting feeling. I took photos of the new poolroom while on deliveries last month and I was impressed with the room. I asked Valerie how the idea for the poolroom came about and she responded, “My parents had the idea back in the 70’s. Then they got divorced and my Dad never went through with the renovations. They even had architectural plans drawn up but since then all the codes have changed. It had always been planned to do but for one reason or another it didn’t happen until now. We’ve always talked about doing it.” By making the upstairs poolroom a reality, Valerie has fulfilled a dream that her Mom & Dad had. Another plus for the poolroom is that it is smoke free. I asked Valerie how the customers and players like it, “The players seem to like it. It will

remain smoke free as long as the customers use it. If not it will be like the rest of the building. Right now it’s quiet and away from things but we have plans to put in a big screen

John Perkins, from the neighborhood, the Hollywood District came up with the idea. He’s fabulous.” The next thing you notice once you enter the u p s t a i r s poolroom is the unique wall design. “The Night The Stars Came Out”

Written By: Lynn Kulungian Pool Table Magic Submitted By: Tom “Dr.Cue” Rossman

There was a very unusual and yet “stellar” show Sunday night (November 5, 2006) at “Pool Table Magic” in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman came to Pool Table Magic to perform a spectacular trick shot show never before performed in this fashion…..in total darkness!!! The event started with a “debut” TV showing of the ESPN Trick Shot Magic competition held in Las Vegas this past October, with “Dr. Cue” in the finals against Mike Massey. The show was televised on the big screen in the main pool room while

Tom and his wife Marty watched with other onlookers, as the trick shot stars performed phenomenal shots that wowed the spectators.

performed his wide array of trick, fancy, skill, and novelty shots with flying colors aided with only a few flashlights. The audience crowded around the table with just a few emergency lights to show the way and watched while “Dr. Cue” performed shot after shot amidst applause, laughter, ooohs, ahhhhs, and cheers. Imagine shooting a shot where a ball flies off the table into a cowboy boot in the darkness! Both Tom and Mike Massey accomplished the feat in back to back efforts, while Bruce Barthelette executed an “artistic pool” shot to perfection in the dark as well. The crowd was thrilled to be part of such an adventure.

There was an additional treat when Mike Massey and Bruce Barthelette showed up to watch the debut showing and Tom’s evening performance. Bruce also played in the ESPN event finishing right behind Mike and Tom. Mike, Bruce, Andy Segal, and Tom were part of the recent ESPN World Cup of Trick Shots “Team” event at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT. Team USA won over Team Europe in exciting fashion. The televised show ended and “Dr. Cue” prepared to perform some magic live. To everyone’s shock and surprise, the room was plunged into total darkness with a power failure that affected over 10 neighboring towns for several hours. Tom, being the excellent showman that he is,

To finish off the show, Tom had seven children in the crowd (new budding stars) each shoot their own trick shots, as they became “shooting stars” themselves. The crowd went wild! Even with the total darkness created by the power

2006 WPA World Artistic Pool Championships from: Al Relf 2006 WPA World Artistic Pool Championships hosted by Ty Wilson & Greg Asproth owners of Two Stooges Sports Bar & Grill in Fridley, Minnesota. What a beautiful room with a 14 foot HD big screen TV, full service restaurant, 8 league electronic dart board, 14 plasma TV’s and two pinball machines, 43 pool tables, and in the center of this massive pool room was a bar that could easily seat 100 patrons comfortably. It takes a lot of hard work and many dedicated individuals to pull off a tournament of this magnitude and at the center of this work was an individual I’m glad to call a friend, Patrick Morrow. This man worked tirelessly making sure that the players, the spectator’s, the staff and everybody were having the time of their lives. Patrick, mission accomplished buddy. I’d also like to thank the volunteers who gave of themselves and who may have sacrificed some points on the scoreboard. Nate Bryant President of the WPAAPD (World Pool & Billiard

systems work well. The bolt lugs have a little problem and too much pressure pulls them out. I had the opportunity to set up the table that Steve Lingelbach had been using to give lessons. The table went up with no problems. Several of the lugs were gone but there were plenty in the aprons to work. Artimas rubber was put on, the usual problems were there. Balls hoping short angles and balls that doubled back on the cross table bank, but I was again impressed with the entire table. Brunswick still has the magic name and the magic touch. We will soon find out how well the Chinese can be directed to produce the high quality that the company expects.

at Chinook Winds for the Western BCA regionals, graciously took pictures for this gala event. Steve had to figure out how to get everyone to stop running around long enough so that he could take their pictures. Cascade Pool League division managers Joyce Gumm, Andrew Zuniga and Steve Marker also did their parts to make this a successful event by getting the word out via the weekly CPL newsletter. Hats off to Cathy and John ‘JJ’ Johnson, owners of Rodders Grub and Pub, and their staff, for their continued support of CPL’s league players. They were instrumental in putting this event on the map. It is great to see sponsors holding local events for league players. JJ does it better than anyone, adding significant money to the pot, showing his players that it’s not always about the buck and that success can be achieved through fun and a great showing of appreciation for his customers and friends. CPL players were appreciative of their efforts throughout the weekend. The food and service were excellent. 9-Ball Singles Winners: 1st Glenn Atwell, 2nd Cody Johnson, 3rd Mickey Mixon, 4th Sean Stevenson, 5th/6th Cecil Pickett, Jake Morin, 7 th/8 th Kenny Christensen, Bill Ruddick 8-Ball Singles Winners: 1st Glenn Atwell, 2 ndTodd Gooch, 3 rd John Jacobs, 4 th Mickey Mixon, 5 th/6 th Steve Copher, Mike Dubendorf, 7th/ 8th Henry Rico, Eve Stockstill, 9th12th, Terry Erdman, Susan Millhollin, Dave Cobb, Cathy, Duenas Scotch Doubles Winners: 1st Glenn Atwell and John Lewis, 2nd Steve Tune and Terry Erdman, 3rd Chris Gattman and Sean Stevenson, 4th Steve Copher and Tony Dunlap, 5th6 th Julie Deboer and Mike Dubendorf, Dave Hawksley & Andy Mays, 7th-8th Bill Ruddick and Dan Rodriguez, Andrew Monstis & Doug Poczynek

One Pocket (continued from page 8)

Whenever you have a chance to leave the cue ball frozen to a ball or a cushion, do so! If your opponent can’t draw the cue ball or even stop it, his options are very limited. Don’t be lazy and try to leave the cue ball “somewhere close.” Work to leave it frozen. Do not surrender the inches — they are all important. In Shot 2 is a banking drill that will teach you to use speed and spin to change the angle of the bank and control the cue ball. Place four balls on a line as shown with enough space between that each ball can be banked to pocket P. Start with cue ball in hand, but after that you have to play from where you leave it on the previous shot. Getting through all four half the time on a table with large pockets is a reasonable goal. I hope these two articles have whetted your appetite for this great game. For me a main attraction is that one pocket allows a much wider range of shots than most games, provided you can hide whitey when you are going for the difficult or impossible shot. For most players the immediate payback will be learning speed control of the cue ball down to the millimeter.

Promises, Promises....

Kevin Trudeau

“I will never allow pool players to take a financial hit” Trudeau Anticipates Shortened Schedule, Promises Refunds In an e-mail sent Dec. 18 at 3:37 p.m., International Pool Tour Founder Kevin Trudeau addressed several questions on the minds of players and hopefuls, most notably announcing that the schedule for the 2007 season will be finalized by March 1, and fewer events are anticipated. As such, those who participated in qualifying tournament in pursuit of a 2007 tour card will be refunded their $2,000 entry fee if the schedule is abbreviated. The full text of Trudeau’s e-mail is included below: From: dandrews@internationalpooltour.com To: dandrews@internationalpooltour.com

Sent: Mon, 18 Dec 2006 3:37 PM Subject: Message from Kevin Trudeau Subject: IPT Updates Dear IPT players & all qualifier participants, I am writing this to all IPT players, and every player who participated in a 2007 Tour Card Qualifying Tournament. Here are the updates relating to the IPT 2007 Season and the IPT’s future: We are still working on the merger/ acquisition with Ho Interactive as well as the option of taking the IPT public independently. These negotiations and details are going rather slow but still look encouraging. We are still actively pursuing major sponsorship packages for the 2007 season. Great progress has been made although nothing is definitive as of yet. We anticipate announcing the 2007 season schedule by March 1st. The schedule may be smaller than we had hoped. We are on schedule for paying the players for the 2006 World Open. We anticipate getting all players paid in full within the first quarter of 2007. If the IPT is not capable of fulfilling the 2007 season schedule as we had previously announced, the IPT will refund the $2000 entry fee to every single player who entered a qualifying tournament for a 2007 Tour Card! By March 1st, we should know what the 2007 season schedule will be. As you all know, I love pool. The IPT is meant to be a tour where the players are put first. I want the IPT to have

tournaments each and every year and grow. Most importantly I want to make sure that the players are always put first. If the IPT struggles, I will personally continue to lose money. However, the players will never lose a single penny even if the IPT fails. This is why if we cannot meet the expectations for the 2007 season, we will refund the entry fees for every player who entered a 2007 Tour Card qualifier. Obviously, players entered the qualifier based on the potential winnings and monetary guarantees mentioned for 2007 Tour Card holders. If these cannot be fulfilled we will make sure that the entry fees will be refunded in full. In any other business, such as the airlines, this would not happen. The business would simply file for bankruptcy and have no legal obligation to pay back anyone. However, I love pool and I love pool players! I will never allow pool players to take a financial hit. I hope that you can appreciate my efforts and commitment to the IPT and to you the players. It appears that the IPT will continue with tournaments although the schedule may be smaller than we initially forecasted. We all agree that the most important thing is that the IPT continue in some fashion or another. During this holiday season, be thankful for all that has been accomplished this year and be hopeful for all the great things that we will accomplish in the future. Happy holidays to all, Kevin Trudeau, Founder
