The ladies of the Women’s Professional Billiards Association (WPBA) will compete in the Cuetec Cues National 9-Ball Championship at Chinook Winds Casino Resort. The tension will be high and the playing will be tough. But for die hard fans, recent admirers and those who are just curious, this is an event that can’t be missed. This opportunity provides those who watch the matches on ESPN the chance to see them live and in person. Fans were not disappointed in 2005 as #6 Vivian “Texas Tornado” Villarreal took on the world #5 player Ga-Young “Little Devil Girl” Kim. Villarreal went into the finals undefeated in the tournament and awaited her eventual opponent Kim as she took on England’s Allison Fisher. In the race to 7 games Kim out played #1 ranked Fisher 7 to 5 and then #4 Monica Webb 7-4. The tension was high as the final match between Villarreal and Kim was set to be played. SACRAMENTO, CA - Sept 16, 2006 Pool may not be rocket science to most of us. But you may want to ask Jessie Killian who is majoring in Math and Physics. She is someone who has the ability to calculate the physics and math that it takes to create angles, patterns and ultimate run-outs. She may have a job with NASA after receiving her degree. Maybe shooting for the stars won’t be a cliche as much as it would be shooting pool in outer space. While the (l to r) Revelina Morales, Jessie Killian dreams and aspirations may involve the known universe back here on earth, Jessie won her second tournament in a row. The same scenario as the last tournament. Jessie “Rocket” Kilian had to come from the one-loss side to face Revelina Morales in the finals. The difference being that this time Jessie wasted no time in claiming her victory with 7-3 and 7-2 defeats of Revelina. There was not going to be the hillhill matches of the last tournament. The WWR would like to thank Hard Times Billiards for hosting this tournament and for their continued support.

The August $ 1000.00 Added tournament at the Cadillac Island in Longview, Washington was eight ball alternating breaks. The top two finishers were Canadian Champions, Stan Tourangeau and Kevin Cardinal with Bob Zack and Tim Robertson a respectful 3rd and 4th place. The last four on the winner side put Stan against Northwest Champion Glenn Atwell and Kevin Cardinal bumping heads with Chad Bisconer. Stan and Kevin advanced to play for the point match. Stan won the point and waited for Bob Zack and Kevin to face off. Kevin pulled off a close win over Bob to get another chance at the I.P.T. Member Stan. Kevin needed to defeat Stan twice in the double elimination format, but in a hill, hill first set Stan pulled out the win. Island Casino’s pay high B player out of the money a crisp $ 100.00 bill. This time it went to our friend Stan “The Tax Man” Alameda from Bend OR. We had a blind draw Calcutta that turned out to be a lot of fun and some extra cash for players as well as rail birds. Four Qualify for U.S. Amateur Championships
The APA is reporting that the Preliminary Round held at the Cue Ball in Salem, OR – September 23rd qualified the following players for the U.S. Open Amateur Championships. For the second consecutive year, Mr. Cues II in Atlanta was
both a Men’s and Women’s Division, with the winner of each division advancing to a pro
of 8-Ball.The APA, based in Lake Saint Louis, Mo., sanctions the world’s largest amateur pool league, known as the APA Pool League throughout the United States and as the Canadian Pool League in Canada. More than 250,000 members compete in weekly 8-Ball and 9-Ball league play. The APA is generally recognized as the Governing Body of Amateur Pool, having established the official rules, championships, formats and handicap systems for the sport of amateur billiards. The APA produces three major tournaments each year—the APA National Team Championships, the APA National Singles Championships and the U.S. Amateur Championship—that, together, pay out nearly $1.5 Million in cash and prizes annually.

two other object balls, separate and D ball pockets in D pocket. The cue ball goes to the right and avoids D ball travel line. The two solo balls must not be disturbed by any means. A scratch is allowed and the cue ball and D ball may make additional contacts after initial hit. Here are a few helpful hints on how to execute this great shot. Instead of aiming straight at the D ball and just using high right English for the bank, I begin by aiming straight in line with D balls vertical axis and then pivot the butt of my cue to the left. The amount of pivot is so the center of my cue shaft is aimed between one quarter and three eights in from the right side of D ball, in other words I’m cutting the D ball to the left slightly. The elevation of my cue is between 10 to 15 degrees. Remember, this will be high right English. I also use an open V bridge. Be sure to get your bridge hand out of the way - both balls will quickly come back at your hand. When you master this one, you will definitely impress your friends.

San Francisco Billiard Academy Usually a miscue is an accident that leads to a missed shot or missed position. Lack of chalk is often the problem although a faulty stroke that lands the tip too far from the center of the ball can also be the cause. Some miscues are done on purpose. I remember one old-time carom player who was an expert at the sly miscue. At carom billiards — the kind without any pockets — you are expected to play some shot even if there was very little chance to score. The old-timer, when faced with such a situation, could be expected to miscue and by some miracle the cue ball would roll to where the shot would be pretty hard for the incoming player. If it wasn’t intentional, the odds against so many consecutive coincidences is astronomical. Bob Jewett When I was first learning to play, there was a pretty good pool shooter who used to practice miscuing while still making the nine ball. All the better to keep his fish on the line. Here are five shots I’ve seen at pool where a miscue is used to accomplish a goal. Shot A is the usual beginner’s jump shot where the cue is level but it strikes the cue ball so low that the jump takes the cue ball over the blocker to pocket the hidden ball. I hope no one reading this article is still at that level. Shot B is a similar situation, but the problem is avoiding a double hit rather than getting a good hit. If you miscue, the cue ball jumps up and avoids being hit by the cue stick a second time, maybe. Shot C and D are for the same position. The object ball is close to the cushion, the cue ball is only a quarter-inch from the object ball, and the player is afraid of stroking toward the ball for fear of a double hit. Shot C is accomplished not like B with a normal miscue, since that would get too much energy into the object ball and it would likely strike the stick
after it came off the cushion. Instead, the cue stick is brought forward under the edge of the cue ball by maybe 1/8-inch. Then, rather than a forward stroke, the stick is lifted straight up, the tip hits the cue ball a glancing blow, and just enough speed goes into the cue ball to get the object ball to the cushion. You might not call this a miscue but I do. The shot can also be accomplished by dropping the stick or waggling it sideways. Shot D comes from snooker. The goal is again to get the object ball softly to the cushion. The tip is aimed clear outside the cue ball and at a right angle to the line you want to send the cue ball along. The tip is so far off-center that a miscue is guaranteed. With a little practice you can get a cushion in this situation without noticeably hitting the cue ball with the side of your ferrule. Finally, Shot E is usually shown as a trick shot. The cue ball and object (Intentional Miscues continued on page 29)

Have you ever wondered whether or not you have a dominant eye or how it might affect your pool game? Have you ever checked? Do you know how to check? Many people have never checked and don’t know how to. The dominant eye is the eye that looks directly at an object, while the nondominant eye looks at the same object at a slight angle. Understanding and recognizing this concept can aid in

Restaurant & Bar correcting potential sighting and aiming flaws. Here is one very basic way to determine your dominant eye: 1. Choose a stationery object that’s approximately 10 feet away from you. 2. Stare at the object and then point to it with your finger. 3. When your eyes are focused on the object and not at your finger, you should see two blurry fingers in your line of sight. 4. Now, close one eye. Then, close the other eye. 5. Notice that with one of your eyes closed, your finger will point exactly at the object. Now, when the other eye is closed, your finger will point at an area shifted slightly from the object. The eye with which you see your index finger pointing exactly at the object is your “Dominant Eye.” It’s possible that you may see two fingers and have trouble pointing your finger at an object. In this case, you might not have a dominant eye. Here’s how this applies to pool… The diagram shown is an example of how we approach center ball with our eyes. Ideally, we aim for a precise point on the cue ball. In this case, that point is where the two solid lines meet. However, if you have a dominant eye, that eye will sent more information to your brain than the other eye. If you’re unaware of this, it can cause your cue to align itself parallel with that dominant eye. In our example, the dotted line indicates the visual parallel shift the player has made due to a dominant left eye. As you can see, the contact point has now moved from the actual center of the cue ball to what the dominant eye perceives to be the center of the cue ball. Still following me? Obviously, just determining our dominant eye is not enough to improve our pool game. However, when we recognize this fact, we can make the proper adjustments to begin sighting shots correctly. Having a perfect stroke demands we know where the center of the cue ball is. This may require retraining your eyes. Honestly, there’s not enough room on this page to cover the various ways that we can use this information to fix our sighting and aiming flaws. There is, however, a training aid I was recently introduced to that is a small, simple, yet extremely effective tool to help make this correction. This device is called the 3rd Eye Stroke Trainer. Created by Joe Tucker, a truly remarkable player, it’s a small plastic extension that slides over the tip of your cue. There are two arms that continue approximately the width of a cue ball. Stroking with the 3rd Eye Trainer demands your sighting and your stroke to correct itself. Periodically using this trainer will dramatically increase your accuracy by retraining your eyes and your brain to find center ball. I personally discovered a slight sighting flaw in my own game and have used it with numerous students in my clinics to identify and correct theirs. As described by Joe Tucker, if you were aiming for the center of a bullseye and your first group of shots went to the left of the target, you would make an adjustment and aim your next group of shots to the right of the target. This is going against your eyes, but our results indicate that what we believe to be center is clearly not the center. In pool, our results are not so obvious. FROM THE ASHES THE OLD BECOMES NEW The first time I went into Grand Central Market was 1945. We had been raising chickens and Dad and Mom were very good at it. They bought a place on 109th and Division that had 16 chickens and one very aggressive rooster. The next year we had 200 chickens and we needed a place to keep the dressed ones. Grand Central had a very large Freezer in the basement and rented lockers to keep food frozen. I always enjoyed the excitement of going to the market for there was so much to see and so much going on. The folks sold the farm and we didn’t have occasion to go back until 1956 when Dad and I were called on to set up 6 - 4x8 pool table and 1 - 5x10 snooker for the change in the Market . The market was to be changed to Grand Central Bowl and it was to be the finest in Pat Sheehan the city. As we arrived Bill Hulen was busy with his new plastic art process creating the most unusual 3 dimensional murals. Bill used a filled polyester plastic with color to create scenes that to this day jump out to be viewed. The fighting stallions in the Billiard room was my favorite and it has survived to this day. I constantly watched him out of the corner of my eye, and he came over and as Dad was putting the plaster of Paris in the seams commented that the plastic resins would do a great job for it had the ability to move with the slate . Of course Dad said that Plaster was always used and it was good enough for him, but I never forgot Bill and his process and I began to experiment with the Tap 500 filled polyester and when Dad was around I used for all types of repair. It became available as Bondo later and replaced the lead method of repairing dents in the automotive section. Grand Central Bowl became a major part of my life for the next 50 years. Herman Levin became my best friend and mentor. Whatever Herman wore, I wore; however Herman phrased his words, I phrased mine. Herman loved the bowling lanes and the business, but he had a shock and was told that he had a very short time to live. He had complete failure of both kidneys. At that time there was no hope and he was told to put his house in order and prepare for death. Herm put an add in Wall Street Journal and it was answered by Stuart Legris. The sale price was agreed and a hand shake given. Stu went back to Seattle to get ready to move to Portland . Herman’s doctor called him with great news. A machine was developed that could take over the Kidneys function and he would live as long as he went on a regular visit to this Dialysis machine. He called Stu with the good news. Stu informed him that he had given notice to his employer, sold his house and was prepared to move. “I shook the hand of a gentleman whose word I knew was good.” There was no contract written that could have been broken but both men lived by their word. A new era began at Grand Central and I had a new hero. I moved into the basement and built a shop where we would be building the Sheehan pool table for 6 years. We never had a lease there was no first and last and the rent was very reasonable; however, I never had to reach into my pocket for Stu always had some task for us to do. Cover tables, build the control desk, remodel this or that, build pool tables to match the Anniversary. He was always concerned with my well being and would offer advice and help when I needed it. Stu had a spring to his step when he walked through the lanes that never told his age. I asked him how he did it and his answer was, “It kills me but I will not let them know.” Now that I am at that age I know just what he meant and I try not to let them know, but after that flight with a set of slate it’s tough. Stu always looked straight ahead and never down or back. It was a point that I admired in him but it was his down fall. He went over to the produce company that boarded his parking lot to tell them that their produce trucks were taking up his customer spaces during league. As always he looked straight ahead and went right off the loading dock. The injuries proved fatal and I lost a great friend. I could not respect the new management and for several years I did not set foot in the Bowl and finally it closed down and I felt that an era had come to an end, but I got a call from another good friend, Dan Lanzen. Concepts entertainment was to blow new life into Grand Central. And the Anniversary tables were to be restored to their original glory and the Men of the Cloth were the ones to do it . The perimeter of the building would be retail shops and the core bowling like it has never been seen in Portland. Overstuffed chairs and sofas with tables. Drinks served at your lane. A brand new billiard room will be on the second floor with it’s own bar and food service. We took the tables down and moved them to storage until final plans are made. The renovation will take eight months but a new and better Grand Central Market will rise from the ashes and debris. Next month we will be telling the story of the tables that were born on that 100th Anniversary in the life of the Brunswick Balke Collender Co. That year changed the billiard table for ever.

Topspin Topspin, or follow, is the most common type of cue ball rotation because it’s what you get when you simply roll a ball down the table. Natural roll, in which there is no slippage between the ball and the cloth, is, believe it or not, the most topspin you can put on a cue ball when you shoot it down the table. Hit a cue ball in the center and it will slide for a short distance before the friction of the cloth converts the slide into natural roll. To give the cue ball natural roll from the moment it is struck, the tip of the cue must contact the cue ball halfway form the center to the top. A higher hit means a miscue, consequently there is no way to put an excess of topspin on the cue ball. As scientist George Onoda has helpfully pointed out, maximum backspin, sidespin and topspin, can be practiced by using a striped ball because the stripe is exactly half a ball wide. Clean a striped ball, chalk your tip so it will leave a mark on the ball, and convince yourself that halfway out from the center is as far as you can safely hit a cue ball. In the diagram, note that the bottom edge of the tip hits the top edge of stripe.

Topspin Limit Unfortunately for this particular practice method, some balls now have a stripe that is wider than half a ball. There is no technical difference between the terms “follow” and “force follow.” The latter is used when the cue ball is struck hard, and almost all players think that by using high speed they are spinning the cue ball faster than natural roll, but such is not the case. The rotational speed is greater on a high-speed follow shot only because the linear speed is greater. Until the cue ball hits a ball, there is no slippage between the cue ball and the cloth. When a cue ball with natural roll hits an object ball full, it stops dead if the balls are the same weight, but the cue ball doesn’t stop spinning. Because of the friction of the cloth, the topspin quickly makes the cue ball resume its forward roll. Watch for it an you will see the hesitation on a full-hit follow shot.

Once you and the world’s referees understand that when a cue ball with follow hits an object ball full it hesitates before following, it is easy to recognize the small-gap foul. The shot at the bottom of the diagram is a foul if the cue follows through to hit the cue ball again. The double hit makes it easy to bank the cue ball to the other end of the table for position. If the cue ball doesn’t hesitate at impact, the stroke is a foul. With such evidence at hand, there should be no cause for arguments. To see the difference between fair and foul, set up the shot shown at the top right, with six inches between the balls. Use maximum follow, shoot hard, and note the hesitation of the cue ball. It’s not easy to get the cue ball to the other end of the table with topspin alone. The cue ball might still have topspin when it comes off the rail, which will kill its speed completely.

Western BCA Regionals Western BCA’s ninth annual regional 9-ball tournament Western BCA is proud to announce that there will be guaranteed $12,000 added prize money at the ninth annual regional 9-ball tournament, Oct. 25-29. This includes $5,000 from Chinook Winds Casino Resort and $1,000 from BCA Pool League. Along with the activities offered at Chinook Winds and Lincoln City, there will be vendors, giveaways, raffles, secondchance tournaments, mini-tournaments and ring games. You can expect all that and more at the premier 9-ball tournament on the west coast, if not the country. The upcoming 9-ball tournament will see the split of the men’s Open division into Open-A and Open-B divisions like those that the 8ball tournament has. Placement will be according to the player’s 8ball ranking. Some of the reasons for this change are to alleviate any confusion about a player ’s ranking for either of the association’s tournaments and level out the playing field in each division. The revised dress code is available on the entry forms and on the Western BCA web site (www.westernbca.org/tournaments). Of special note, players on the tournament floor must wear sleeved shirts of polo/golf style or button-down style with a conventional fold-over collar. No T-shirts, sweats, warm-up suits or jogging suits are allowed. Players must keep their torsos covered at all times. For mixed scotch doubles and teams competitions, matching shirts are encouraged but not mandatory. As Western BCA enters its 12th year, it continues to grow and attract more players from a wider area. We are happy to welcome back the Roseburgarea players. Bruce Deal, league operator, and Janet Thomas, secretary, have started up Roseburg BCA League in Oregon. Inland BCA, lead by Johnnie Landis in Spokane, Wash., is expanding to include teams from as far as western Montana. Applauded manager, Jeff Jackson, of the Island Casino’s has added Western BCA pool leagues to their Kennewick, Wash. location under Cindy Doty’s Northwest Players League. TIGARD, OR - Even though it was only a field of 15, this was an important event to many players to obtain points. The players also chose to play a race to 9. With the yearend prize just a month away and a lot at stake, play was just as exciting as it has been all year. To start the tournament off, Joanne Ashton (current #1 player on the tour) and Mary Hopkin (2nd place player on the tour) played each other right out of the gate. With only a 100 point difference, this was a crucial match for both. Joanne however, won that match in a hill-hill match 9-8 and continued to dominate the remainder of the tournament, gaining the right to play in the finals by also beating Marion Morales 9-1, Julie Valdez 9-4 and Kim Jones for the point, 9-7. Kim Jones made her way to the finals by beating Liz Cole 9-8, Tamre Rogers 9-3, Martha Hartsell 9-7 then losing to Joanne Ashton 9-7. Moving to the losers side, she then beat Liz Cole again 9-5 to play Kim in the finals. Joanne took a quick lead 7-3, but Kim came back and before you knew it, it was 8-7. With Joanne on the hill, what we thought was the last game, Joanne ran down to the nine, leaving herself a fairly easy shot. But, she missed and Kim tied up the match. Joanne broke, scratched and Kim made a difficult 1-9 combo to win her first ever NWPA event. Congratulations Kim! The NWPA would like to thank Kevin and Shannon Parr for hosting the event. Ironman Pool Tournament Sept 23 & 24, 2006 On a beautiful fall day 16 pool players showed up at New Peking in Port Angeles to do battle in the Ironman Pool Tournament. In the round robin format no one could be avoided and everyone had their ups and downs over the two day event. Larry Wilson of Victoria had a great ferry ride home because it was not only a great day and flat calm water but he had a pocket full of money. Larry played 60 games like everyone else but he won 46 of them and took the first place prize of $800. First day leader Rich Ivan Doty, Larry Wilson, Rich Geiler Geiler wilted on the warm rd fall day and had to settle for 40 wins and 3 place while Ivan Doty after 4th Place playing in a haze the first day caught fire on day 2 and climbed to 44 wins 5th Place and a second place finish. Pat Gamble was the top local finisher with 37 Most 9 Ball wins wins good for 4th place and ageless Clyde Bowles was just one game in Out of the money back of Pat with 36 wins and 5th place. The house pro, Kevin Fong got the Most 8 Ball wins most 9 ball wins out of the money with 19. Jerry Hagen and Mike Jensen Out of the money tied for most 8 ball wins out of the money with 16. Ivan, Maynard Jean and Tied

ATWELL WINS LONGVIEW, WA Cadillac Island Casino hosted the NW Pechauer Tour September 9-10, 2006. A field of 45 players show up to vie for the title. It turned out to be Glenn Atwell’s tournament. After being sent to the one loss side by Ivan Doty on Saturday, Glenn fought his way back. When play resumed on Sunday, Atwell was on fire. He won his first 25 games before suffering a loss. His matches all seemed to be 7-0. While Glenn was tearing through the one loss side Bob Zack waited in the hot seat for the finals after defeating Eddie Carrido 8-4. The finals was one race to 13. Atwell and Zack squared off and it was an
all Atwell finish. Glenn jumped out to an astonishing 9-0 lead before he gave Bob a chance at the table. From there it was only a matter of time before Glenn finished the match with a final score of 13-6. Justin Lilje went undefeated to win the September 3rd, Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’s Billiards. Sam Rabito lost a close game to Justin in the first round, but when the two faced off again for 1st place in the finals, Justin was on a terror, racking up a 32-ball run on his way to a 50 to 10 win. Sam came into the finals in the wild card slot and beat Mike Ottoboni to assure himself second place. Bill Bradford came back after being down against Mike to win 50 to 46 for third Justin Lilje place. Among the mix of players were several newcomers and some folks who haven’t been at Sam’s for many moons. Sam’s is under construction, but that didn’t hurt the flow of the tournament. By November the upstairs will open up with more tables, food service, and a non-smoking option. The billiard table will be coming out of storage and be set up on the first floor. Don’t let having to walk around the stairwayin-progress to the upstairs keep you away. AREA PLAYERS GEAR UP FOR 8TH ANNUAL NORTHERN LIGHTS SHOOTOUT IN RUGBY by Pierce County Tribune staff writer, Rugby, ND The Northern Lights Shootout began in 1999 to bring together the top 8ball pool players from the region and Canada. Eight years later, the tournament remains one of the largest in North Dakota, boasting a total purse of $15,000 and attracting 150 men and women pool players from several states and Canadian provinces to Rugby. This year’s double elimination tournament will be held Dec. 7-10 with most of the matches at the city armory, with Bob’s Pizza Inn, Jester’s Lounge, and the Eagles Club hosting some matches. Mark Hamilton, tournament co-coordinator, expects another strong field. “The men’s draw will have around 128 entered, and we expect about 32 on the women’s side,” he said. Big payouts Top prize on the men’s side is again $3,000 with the runner-up receiving $2,000 and third place earning $1,000. The top 32 players receive a payout. On the women’s side, the champion earns $800. Runner-up receives $500 and third place gets $300. The top eight receive a payout. Players from North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana and Washington are expected to participate, as well as players from Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia. Hamilton notes that at least six players who have appeared in the Rugby tournament in past years have also participated in the International Pool Tournament (IPT) which is the biggest payout tournament in the country. “One of our top players who comes to Rugby regularly has placed in the top 50 in the IPT,” Hamilton said. “This really speaks for the caliber of players who come to town.” Eight-ball matches will get underway at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8 with the finals expected to begin around 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10. In addition, a consolation tournament will be held for players knocked out of the main tournament, and there is a payout for the winner. There is no entry fee for the consolation tournament. Also, a Calcutta will be held at Jester’s Lounge on Saturday evening, Dec. 9. New this year
For the first time this year, a special Geographical Center International Cup 9-Ball Tournament will be held on Thursday, Dec. 7 beginning at 3 p.m. Cost to enter is $40 per player with the first 16 Canadians and the first 16 Americans to sign up. The format is a race to seven. Payout is $1,000 for first place and the cup trophy. The second place finisher gets $500 with third and fourth place receiving their entry fee into the weekend’s 8ball tournament. Economic boost While the tournament creates another event for the community, it also generates an economic boost for several local businesses in early December, mainly the motels, gas stations, bars and restaurants, as well as some retail stores. Hamilton said the support from the community over the years has been tremendous and the tournament would not be possible without their continued support. “The local businesses have been great, and we appreciate their part in making this tournament possible,” he said. Public welcome The tournament is open to the public, and it’s a chance to see some of the best 8-ball players in action. Admission is free. This year, the tournament has been taken over by the Geographical Center Chamber of Commerce. Hamilton will be assisted by Jeremy Schoenberg, Darin Williams, and the chamber board members. Posted: September 10, 2006 Never before to my knowledge has there been pool at this magnitude available online live that is brought to you in the comfort and privacy of your own home. We have always had to wait to read about it, hear about it, or with any luck buy a tape of great players in great matches. This has always been months and sometimes years down the road. If you weren’t there in person trying to find a seat with the best advantage you were out of luck. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and found myself reacting to misses, wins, breaks and even to the audience and announcers. This is like watching your favorite football, basketball or favorite sport on TV only on your computer. And this is live, online. Reyes, a total master of the green felt wins the lag by a hair but makes nothing on the break. Morris runs the table with little effort. Winner breaks. Rodney breaks and came up empty. Efren takes the one in the corner and runs out. So far the break is the disadvantage. The players are miked so you can hear them talking as they play and talk to the cornermen (Reyes: Santos Sambajon - Morris: Junne Padua). Efren breaks and again comes up short. Rodney’s back at the table. If one of these guys starts making balls on the break they will have

an advantage. Morris jumps up on the three ball and misses in the corner. Efren runs to the 8 and makes a tough shot in the side. The video quality is good when the focus is in but following the player around the table sometimes takes a few seconds. Nothing on the break again. That’s four breaks, no balls and Rodney ties it at 2-2.
The banter between the players and the cornermen (Reyes: Santos Sambajon - Morris: Junne Padua) is a unique facet that usually you never hear. The break again plays the culprit with a scratch. When it comes to ball in hand after the break there is no perfect way to run the table but finding a pocket for the 8 is the key. Again I am live at home watching online. This is so unique to me. This type of technology has never been available in the billiard community. Efren runs down to the 8 and jumps up on his shot off the rail and misses. Rodney looks surprised and gets up and runs out. Now 3-2 Morris. Finally someone makes something on the break in rack 6 the 10 in the side and Rodney runs out 4-2. Efren wins now 4-3. Efren breaks and again nothing on the break. Rodney has the 12 in the side but he stands up walks to his seat, takes a drink of water to calm down, comes back and nails the shot but then missed the next shot by overcutting. You can see the pain on Rodney’s face. He knows the importance of each game and especially each shot. Efren up now at the table and runs out 4-4. The live online video even has replay. How cool is that! Rack 9: All Bust No Balls Rodney at the table and gets out 5-4. How many times can the break not work (IPT continued on page 21)

Pierce County APA Summer Session Division Champions from: Michelle Barkdoll League Operator
The APA calendar year consists of 3 sessions: summer, fall and spring. Teams from each session that win the title of ‘Division Champion’ earn entry into the annual Local Team Championship (LTC), generally held
in May (8 Ball) and June (9 Ball). Teams that win the LTC advance to the National Team Championship (NTC) in Las Vegas. The amount of teams that can qualify for the NTC is based on local area team count. Last year, 3 teams from Pierce County in the 8 Ball format and 2 in 9 Ball competed to win the 1st place prize of $25,000 (8 Ball) and $15,000 (9 Ball). Pool Cues Stolen in Oregon YOUR HELP IS NEEDED On Tuesday, August 29, 2006, our home in Grants Pass, Oregon, was broken into. Among the things stolen were two very distinctive pool cues. We are attempting to get the values verified for insurance purposes. We do not believe the thieves were after any pool cues due to what they did and did not take. They were strictly into “smash and grab”. Barney’s late father was Chub LaMontagne, he was an avid pool player all of his life, as well as a pool room owner, and cue maker. He was well
known among some of the greatest players of his time. In 1939 Chub won a “Rambow” cue at a Northern State Snooker Championship in California. This cue is inlayed with much detail, all of which is ivory crisscross, lines, and dots. The cue butt is jointed as it at one time had an additional interchangeable weighted butt. There was two shafts. The second stick was Chub’s personal cue he used for many years. It has in the black resin butt, two “Harvey’s Wagon Wheel” red dice, it has a green/white linen wrap, it is stamped with the “CHUBCUE” logo on the butt plate, there were three matching shafts with this stick. They were both in a brown “suitcase” style cue case when stolen.

Rodney takes his time but is there too much thinking? He kept getting a little out of position every shot until the cue got too close to the 6 ball for the side and has to take the 2 in the corner but didn’t get good position on the 6 again. Tries the 6 in the corner and misses. Efren runs out and leads 6-5. You only get one turn at the table that is the norm. Efren breaks and makes a ball in the side. I love technology especially when it Rodney Morris works - and this does!!! The announcers comments on Efren’s spider fingers to bridge over the 14 to make the 6 but has only a half pocket for the 8 ball. NO... Efren misses the 8! Rodney plays a safety but everyone thinks Efren can see the 8. He tries to make it but fouls on the 15 ball and makes the 8 and the crowd goes wild but doesn’t know Efren fouled - loss of game. Tie 6-6. Besides everyone at the World 8-Ball Championships, we here online with the membership to the live video feed saw it too. This is the world of pool to come!!! Efren wins the next game and is breaking at 7-6. A lucky kick on the break keeps Reyes at the table. HE RUNS OUT AND WINS THE $500,000 FOR FIRST PLACE with his only break and run of the match. Rodney just had too many misses but graciously accepts $150,000 for second place. Efren jumps for joy after he won - he just couldn’t stop smiling. He spoke to the audience in his native language. Jennifer Barretta Empress of Pool INCHEON, KOREA Six of the world’s greatest and beautiful players competed in the first annual Empress Cup at the Hyatt Regency in Incheon, Korea on Sept 14. The stars included Jeanette Lee, Tiffany Nelson, Ga Young Kim, Miyuki Sakai, Yuram Cha, and Jennifer Barretta. The format was round robin races to 5, alternate breaks, and ladies were in two groups of 3 players each. Best record in each group would play each other for the Empress Cup. The event was pressure packed with a standing room audience and media including major newspapers, radio and every major TV network covering the event, with MBC ESPN exclusively filming the matches live. First up in Group A was the Black Widow against 9mm Barretta and the nerves were showing as both players made easy unforced errors the first 2 racks including an easy 9 ball combination missed by Lee. Lee reasserted herself to win the next game and the two battled until 4-3 Lee advantage when she missed a straight in the side 9 Ball to conclude the match. Barretta came back and broke and ran the last rack to win. Next Group B, World Champion Ga Young Kim easily took out Nelson who seemed to be having trouble maintaining her normal solid game. Lee came back the next match and was visibly determined to show the Korean fans why she’s the world’s most famous pool player and she tore the young 19 year old sensation Cha apart with amazing shot making, banks, and caroms to win 5-0.
Back in Group B, Kim faced Japan’s Sakai. Sakai seemed very nervous and botched some easy run outs and an easy 9 Ball which gave Kim a boost and she proceeded to run over Sakai 5-1 to secure her spot in the finals. The final group match was Barretta against Cha. Lee needed Cha to win and hold Barretta to 3 games in order for Lee to advance. Unfortunaetly for Lee, Barretta had alternate plans as she played flawlessly to cruise to the finals with a 5-0 win over Cha. The finals pitted Korea star Kim against USA’s hopeful Barretta, who was appearing in her first international finals. Kim made a couple errors but Barretta made her pay for each one and kept her serve as she defeated Kim 6-3 for the win. “It feels good to win my first major title here.” said the 6 month pregnant Barretta who is due on Dec 24 this year. “ Now I have to get copies of my matches so that I can show my son later he was here with mommy helping her win!” The Empress Cup matches were scheduled to air live for 2 hours, but due to enormous ratings, the matches were aired an additional 2 hours making it a 4 hour live coverage straight and pushing Korea’s national baseball league game back. Empress Cup was the #1 show in its time slot for 4 hours breaking records for any billiards show aired in Korea. Jeanette Lee SEOUL, KOREA Jeanette Lee in beautiful company with stars Jennifer Barretta, Ga Young Kim, Tiffany Nelson, Yuram Cha and Miyuki Sakai performed trick shots in a standing room only crowd at famed amusement park Lotte World, Korea. The event was aired live on Korea’s #1 network MBC ESPN for 2 hours and was the #1 show in its time slot.
Lee, who is former Women’s World Trickshot Champion, used her experience in defeating her opponents in the event in the round robin format playing with similar rules to basketball’s HORSE. Her opponent in the finals was Korea’s teenage young gun Yuram Cha. The youthful Cha was not able to keep up with the Black Widow’s repertoire of shots, but Cha gained experience and a whole lot of fans. Korea has a star rating of celebrities including actors, actresses, sports figures, etc. Cha’s rating at the beginning of the event was ranked 800 and she moved to #1 ranked in the chart and also search engines. MBC ESPN and other Yuram Cha networks will be doing a documentary on the now overnight stardom of the young and beautiful Cha. “She’s so beautiful and she has such a bright future ahead of herself in this sport.” said Lee when asked her opinion of Cha. Jeanette Lee and all the stars of the event will team up with the men stars in pool including Rodney Morris, Charlie Williams, and George Breedlove in this weekend’s Korea vs. USA. The Ultimate Trickshot Challenge is part of the Brunswick Korea Pro Pool Tour and was played on the sleek Brunswick Metro table. Team USA Wins Kangwonland Casino, Korea- Team USA defended its title at the 2nd Annual Kangwonland Casino Korea vs USA. The two day event pitted some of North America’s greatest talents against South Korea’s best. Team Korea comprised of World Games Gold Medalist Jeanette Lee, 2x World Champion Ga Young Kim, #5 ranked KPT Min Hu Baek, and Korea International Champion Captain Charlie Williams aka Hyeon Ho Kim. Team USA had US Pro Tour Champion Captain Rodney Morris, 2x PBTA Tour Stop Winner George Breedlove, Empress Cup Champion Jennifer Barretta, and Top 5 USA ranked Tiffany Nelson. Korea vs USA was a 2 day event airing live in Korea on MBC ESPN. The show ratings were #1 for both days not only in its time slot but the entire day breaking all previous billiard show
ratings in Korea (previously all held by Dragon Promotions). Korea vs USA captured 20% share of all TV audiences, unheard of for a billiards event. Richard’s matches were Frank Anthony (5-0), Glenn Atwell (50), Jeff Leonards (5-2), Russian Dave (6-2), Eddie Mataya (6-3), and then that first loss against Dan Louie for the point (2-6) and then James Davee (5-3). I heard Ford tell a couple spectators that he wished he had $20 for every time he had watched Louie and Geiler play each other in the finals over the last 25+ years. IPT Announcements IPT 2007 Tour Card Qualification TournamentsThe International Pool Tour is about to start week two of the ten week 2007 Tour Card Qualification System. Here is your opportunity to secure a spot on the 150 player IPT 2007 Tour! The IPT is hosting qualification tournaments throughout the world starting this Friday! The top two finishers in each of these events will win an entry into the 2007 Tour Card Tournament where the top 50 players will earn a 2007 Tour Card. And, each qualifying player will also win free airfare to the tournament as well as a hotel room. No matter how many players enter each tournament, two players will earn spots in the tournament. And remember, every 2007 IPT Member is guaranteed a minimum of $100,000! Each tournament will be a Double-Elimination competition with races to ten. The Two players from each tournament who will qualify for the 2007 Tour Card Tournament will be the winner of the winning side and the winner of the losing side of the brackets. Players who place 3rd-6th will receive a free entry to another qualification tournament of their choice. IPT Rules, which can be read on line, govern each tournament. There is very limited space at each event so entries are based on a first-come, first-served basis. Do not miss this chance to play on the IPT tour by failing to register in time. On line registration is the only way to enter these events and the form is on the IPT web site www.internationalpooltour.com. Absolutely no entries will be allowed at the tournament; no money will be accepted at the events. You align your stick parallel to the cushion and far enough out on the cue ball so that you will miscue but maybe not so far as with shot D. By some strange double kiss the object ball is guided into the pocket. Are these shots legal? Some feel they are, especially C and D. The current rules are not perfectly clear on the matter. In the currently proposed revision of the World Standardized Rules, intentional miscues are explicitly

forbidden as not part of the game. Another problem is what to do with unintentional miscues. The ultra-high-speed video in the Jacksonville Project shows that many miscues involve the side of the stick slapping the cue ball. To make life complicated for the referee, not all miscues have contact with the ferrule. For the time being, unintentional miscues are assumed to not be fouls in and of themselves. You can do your part to avoid confusion by making sure your tip is chalked.
