Canadians Take Top Six Places at McQ’s
3
By DAVID TELLER
SPOKANE, WA Stan Tourangeau of Vancouver, B.C. holds out a surging Edwin Montal and emerges undefeated from a field of 44 to win McQ’s open 9-ball tournament, held Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday Sept. 2. Tourangeau beat Montal 9-6 in a match where the winner would advance to play for the driver’s seat. In the loser’s bracket, Montal, who is from Calgary, Alberta, would cruise past Tyler Edie of Red Deer, Alberta, and Phillip Tourangeau of Edmonton, Alberta. Montal jumped to a quick 3-0 lead with a break and run and then two early 9-balls before Nick Kruger, the returning tournament champion, got a trip to the table. Kruger, who is from
Penticton B.C. was never able to get into stroke, losing 9-3. The win gave Montal a rematch with Stan Tourangeau in the championship match. Tourangeau got started with a 3-0 jump on Montal and extended his lead 63. Montal settled in and rallied back to even the score 6-6 but cooled off as Tourangeau took over the tempo and coasted to a 9-7 win. The Tourangeaus replaced the Gillilands in the match of “brotherly love.” Phillip, the younger brother of Stan, lost the match 9-2. Phillip made the best comeback performance of the tournament, winning his next seven matches in the loser’s bracket, finishing in fourth place in his loss to Montal. The Gillilands did not meet in this year’s tournament. The top U.S. finishers were Justin Lilje of Portland, Oregon and Pete Quande of Helena, Montana.
Sheila Moss was the only female competitor, but did not place. McQ’s nine-ball open is a race to nine on both sides of the tournament board and is played on Brunswick Gold Crowns tables with red circle cue balls. The entry fee is $60 for a total tournament purse of $3,150. The tournament was sponsored by Budweiser.

Letterfrom the Editor:
A misunderstanding or an out and out flimflam, you judge. As told to me by another pool player. He went to a tournament some 175 miles away. It was a state championship but only had 15 players in his division. He was on the one loss side waiting for a match and was shooting on a pool table that wasn’t being used in the tournament. Just banging balls around, he said, trying to loosen up for his next match. A person walked up to him and asked, “Do you want to shoot some pool?” He said “Yes”. They didn’t lag or flip a coin for break. The other player just put the quarters in and racked the balls. He told me he went for shots that he wouldn’t normally go for, tried to do some break outs and other shots to practice. The other player was not very friendly, never shook his hand or introduced himself. This of course is not uncommon because it’s easier to beat someone when you don’t know them or like them. Being friendly can throw your game off. Having said this, the first pool player who thought this was practice was at first surprised when his practicing opponent said, “The match is over. I win 5-zip.” The first pool player said, “We weren’t playing a match, this was practice. Nobody called a match, no one told me.” He went to the tournament director and told him the story. He said the tournament director told him he couldn’t change the outcome because the other player said the exact opposite. What would you do? How would you have handled this situation? And should the tournament director take some responsibility? Of course, the first player could have just got beat badly or he could have got flimflammed. You know a con job. For your opinion email: otbnews@aol.com There may not be enough information to judge this but send in your stories if you have had something similar happen to you.

Almost Stopping By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA
Email Questions to: jewett@sfbilliards.com harada@sfbilliards.com mejia@sfbilliards.com
San Francisco Billiard Academy www.sfbilliards.com In several previous columns, I’ve urged you to go beyond area position — that’s where you get more or less on the right side of the next shot — to something closer to pin-point position. This might be putting the cue ball exactly on the cushion for a shot along the cushion or setting up for a perfectly straight shot on the next ball for an easy stop shot. My main point is that if you never try for a precise spot, you are unlikely to learn how to get there. This month’s drill has you do stop Bob Jewett shots and the family of shots that are nearly stop shots. The first case is shown in Shot A. The goal is to make the object ball and leave the cue ball completely motionless after it hits the object ball. (This leaves the cue ball overlapping the ghost or phantom cue ball.) Mark the exact spot to leave the cue ball with chalk or a paper reinforcement donut so you can see how well you did after the shot. The hard version of the drill requires you to make the cue ball overlap the mark; the easy version just requires you to not move the cue ball so far that a ball could be spotted on that goal spot. Play this as a progressive drill, so that each time you fail to meet the shot requirements, you make the next shot a little easier, and if you do meet the requirements, you increase the difficulty by moving the cue ball farther back. For the next part of the drill, use the setup

in Shot B - that is, you want the cue ball to go forward exactly one ball from a perfect stop shot. The object ball is now farther from the pocket, both to make the shot harder and to force you to use a little more stroke for the following position shots. First, try to leave the cue ball in the position of the object ball - that is, you want the cue ball to go forward exactly one ball from a perfect stop shot. Start with the cue ball close and move it back progressively. I think the farther back the cue ball gets, the harder time you will have with the precise placement. A firm stroke through the center of the cue ball works very well for short shots, but as the travel to the object ball gets longer, you will need more draw. Next, try the same, but pull the cue ball back from the stop position by one ball diameter. This definitely needs a mark on the table as your goal. Depending on how long your interest lasts, try two balls forward and two balls back, then three, and so on. I think you will find that the stop shot is quite easy to do nearly perfectly a large fraction of the time, but the shots get much harder as the required movement changes. For extra credit, put a little angle on the shot and choose a point close-by but off to the side by a ball or two. Most of the time, the table will be open enough that you can get by with sloppy play, but some of the time the cue ball has to be controlled absolutely or you won’t have a shot. This drill will prepare you for those situations. In addition, if you improve to the point where you can put the cue ball within an inch or two of the desired spot, you will more often have the ideal position to get to the next ball, and all of your shots will be easier.

From The Work Bench
by: Pat Sheehan
California 6 x 12 Snooker Tables You might get bored with all the stories of 6x12 snooker tables but for some reason I have been exposed to a dozen of them in the past year. Not too many people in the USA working on tables have been exposed to them and the mechanics seem to do their best to destroy them. I was asked to go to So Cal to see if I could pull a couple of them from the trash heap and breathe life into them. The first in Chico and the second in Ventura. I like to draw the analogy that a pool table recovery on a smaller table like a 4x8 or 4 1/2 x9 is like mowing your front lawn but a big Bertha is like taking care of the back nine on a golf course. The table in Chico had been refinished by Royce, a very talented furniture manufacturer in the area. It was such a mess that the first pictures I saw of it, I wondered why Jim Anderson had picked this wreck but by the time I got to Chico the frame had become a thing of beauty and a joy to behold for ever. Bob the local billiard mechanic arrived and after getting the frame leveled and the missing frame members that I had made in my shop installed they put on the slate under my directions. Since my fingers that I fed to the Jointer were not completely healed I gladly stood back as the 400# plus pieces were put in place. Since the last person to take it apart had not marked the slate they had to do a little reshuffling but we did get a match. Terror filled my heart as I saw that each slate had carbon streaks running through them, but I had brought my slate hone with me and Royce had a disc sander. We flattened the slate and filled the cracks and streaks with super glue so it will be good for another 5 years. We leveled and re-leveled until the table was on the money. It was well into the second day and my feet were already tired from the 20 miles I walked around the monster. The first rule on working on a 6x12 is always have a helper. Herb the landscape architect for the Condos Jim is building in Tahiti and Matt the foreman on the project were there and my steps were shortened by 50%. 60 years ago I saw my first 6x12 because Dad used me as the gofer at the Portland Labor Center so I learned at an early age what a challange they could be. I always enjoy working on them because of the memories they bring back. Three days and the table was perfect except for the rubber. I was assured that the cushions were OK and had not prepared myself to fight that battle. I had to install cushions in Ventura so I was not sure I would

have enough so I was “ta-ta for now and we shall return. We got to Ventura at 3:00 am on Saturday and the City of Ventura senior center was not open on Sunday so I had the rare pleasure of a day off and what a place to have it. I slept in till 8:00 am and went out to the pool to work on my novel and had a chance to meet some of the nicest guys I ever met. Gary and Jack were staying at the Vagabond while they were working on the oil fields two hills north and they called me over to the hot tub and we shared their beer. Gary invited my wife Brigid for his hillbilly barbecue that after noon and we spent the whole day goofing off. Before I knew it, it was Monday and I was off to meet Tom Buchan and his oversized girl friend. Another can of worms. Birtha had been covered and new cushions installed 3 years ago but it was almost impossible to play a good round of golf on her. The balls hoped a foot in the air on some rails and stopped with a thud on others. The ball rolled every direction on the playfield. The mechanics level showed a hilly course with the bubble disappearing on some slates and remotely close on others. In 1918 when the table was first set up no one noticed that the braces were bowed up and the slate was never able to flatten them. Tom and I were able to work the slate off and plane the offenders. One was so bad that it had fractured a slate over the years. The cushions were glued on with contact cement with the usual result (they had fallen off). It is impossible to work rubber that has been contacted so we saved it for the 4x8. Much to my surprise when I came back from picking From the Work Bench (continued on page 22)

for a total purse of $1,000. The tournament started at 1:00 pm and finished close to 11:00 pm. Billy Palmer to no one’s surprise took home the $400 first place prize, however it was no easy task. Tough player Jeff Gregory went through the winner’s side beating everyone including Billy to get to the hot seat. This resulted in a tough final match between Jeff and Billy. Although Billy was the eventual winner beating Jeff 2 straight matches, each match went to the hill game. Sunday’s 9-ball event featured twenty-five of Northern California’s top players vying for the $1025 purse. Play began at 1:00 pm. Tony Annigoni sailed through the bottom half of the bracket while Billy Palmer flew through the top. The hot seat was eventually went to Tony. Billy came back through the one loss side setting up the final match. Tony jumped out to a 4-0 lead when his scratch on a relatively easy 8-ball provided Billy with the break he needed. Billy stepped up his play and took advantage of this break resulting in a 4-4 tie. However the day belonged to Tony and he took the next 2 games and the tournament with a 6-4 victory. 3rd Stop - The Broken Rack, Emeryville, California - September 22-23 The Broken Rack is a favorite local hangout for pool-playing enthusiasts. Housing sixteen Olhausen tables, the third WWR stop brought in fifteen women to test the new cloth. Among the fifteen were last year’s tour champion Jessie Killian and runner up (also a previous champion) Michelle Rakin. Traditionally, the tour has always held two-day events, so even with a small field, the tournament was stretched out to Sunday. On the winner’s side, Michelle heftily fought her way to the hot seat, having to beat Lisa D’Atri for it. From the one-loss side, however, the road was not so easy for Mary Rakin. After a 7-6 loss to Jessie first round, Mary won her next four matches and then lost to Helen Gaughran for fourth place. Helen was in a similar situation, having lost to Lisa D’Atri first round and then winning her next four to meet Mary. Helen met Lisa again on the one-loss side, but Name 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5-6

SHOTZE’S 8-BALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP from: Rose Wilson & Ford (Tournament Directors)
Shotze’s in Everett, WA, held its 7th Annual-Ball State Championship Tournament and it was a great one. Forty-nine men and eleven women from Japan, Canada, Oregon, Eastern Washington and the local areas came together to put their bid in to win this very difficult tournament. Glacier’s Bowling Lane owner Larry Miller helped sponsor this tournament by donating a $250 prize. His instructions were to find a way to give the money to an individual in the tournament that accomplished something that would be considered difficult to do. Ford and I made a decision that any individual who won their match with a score of 5 to 0 and had two 8ball breaks would receive this money. Neither of us really thought it would be done. Half way through the first round and already three 5 to 0 scores, but no 8-ball breaks being turned in, I thought the $250 was safe. How

wrong I was. Val Alvardo, a regular in our tournaments bested Dave Williams with a score of 5 to 0 and said he had two 8-ball breaks. I called Dave over and verified with him that it was true and then called Ford over and had them repeat it to Ford. Afterwards, Ford laid out $250 and we presented it to Val and I made this announcement to the rest of the players. What made this all work is that, even though a few people knew we had the $250 from Larry, no one but Ford and I knew what we were going to do with it. Shotze’s, Ford and I would really like to take this time to thank Larry for his contribution and we had a great time giving it away. We would also like to take this time to thank The Platis Law Firm, Billiards 911, ABC Billiards, and Family Game Store & Billiards for their sponsorship into this year’s tournament. It’s the sponsorships like this that make it all work for the players. Each tournament winner since the first gets his/her entry fee paid into the next year’s 8-ball tournament. Also, our Monday Night 9-ball league winner also gets his/her entry fee paid. Dan Louie, from last year, and Jim Conway, from Monday Night League, received their entry fees free and set out to show every one in the tournament that it was earned. Dan Louie’s matches were Andy Ruth (5-0), Shari Ross (5-0), Zack Masiba (5-2), a loss to Damian Pongpanik (0-6), Tim Tweedell (6-3), Randy Camatigue (6-5), Jim Conway (6-2), Chris Estrada (6-0), Todd Marsh (65) and then into the finals against Stan Tourangeau. It had been awhile since Stan had joined us at Shotze’s for one of our tournaments and it was great to have him back. His matches for the weekend were Josie Leroy (5-2), Chris Estrada (5-2), Jeff Jimenez (5-3), Sambo Huff (6-2), Jim Conway (6-1), Todd Marsh (6-2) and then waiting to see who was going to try to unseat him in the finals. Our finals have been one race for all the marbles for a very long time. This tournament was no different. Both Dan Louie and Stan Tourangeau had won this tournament before and once again, one of them was going to get their entry fee paid next year. Unfortunately, I had to leave before the 3rd place match started and was told I missed some great action. I just hate (Shotze’s 8-Ball continued on page 27)

SACRAMENTO, CA September’s Jamboree started with the One Pocket event and 28 strong players for another fine field. The $840 pot included the $280 added by Hard Times. One Pocket is owned by Billy Palmer in this part of the country, and Billy didn’t let anyone that was in attendance get disappointed with the results. When Billy is playing, the question is “Who’s going to finish 2nd?” Mr. Palmer went undefeated with victories over Roger Estelle, Patrick Rhea, Ron Lilly (7th), Bart Mahoney (4th) and Chris MacDonald (3rd) for the hot seat. Chris MacDonald won his matches on the winner’s side over Ross Webber, Jermaine Lazaga, Bob B., Tony Melindez (3rd) then lost to Billy Palmer in the hot seat match. Chris had to face Tony Melindez again in the finals of the one loss bracket to earn the trip to the tournament finals against Billy Palmer. This carried Mr. Palmer’s streak of Jamboree tournament wins to 5 in a row. Combined wins in One Pocket and 9 Ball earned Mr. Palmer true Champion status. Congratulations Billy on your excellent play. The 9 ball event attracted 52 players from all over northern California and Western Nevada. Hard Times added $500 to the $1300 from entry fees to make the total prize fund of $1800. Not bad for a one day event. Once again Billy Palmer went undefeated to win the hot seat match with wins over Jake, Chase Staggs, Chris Cass, Gilbert Arellano
Billy Palmer
(9th), Jeff Gregory (5th) and Robert Aldana (3rd) for the hot seat win. Robert Aldana got to the hot seat match with wins over Ricky Smiley, Bill W., JJ Cain (13th), Marshall Williams (4th) before losing to Billy. Robert then went to the left side to wait for the final one loss match against the winner of the Roger Estelle and Marshall battle. Roger won a great Hill-Hill match and then went to the finals of the one loss bracket with another Hill-Hill match against Robert Aldana. The finals are true double elimination and this meant that Billy Palmer was the odds on favorite to win his 6th straight Jamboree event at Hard Times. Roger Estelle had other plans for Billy. Roger won the first set by jumping out to a 4-1 lead. Billy fights back to tie at 4-4. Mr. Estelle then finds an open table in the 9th rack and runs out, getting to the hill first. Roger then breaks and runs out taking the first set.
The final set was all Roger Estelle. Roger got to the hill before Mr. Palmer won his first game. Then Roger faced another open table when Billy’s break came up dry and Mr. Estelle won that game and the match for first place and the $450 prize and stopping Billy’s tight hold on the Hard Times Billiards monthly Jamborees. Diablo Valley Women’s Pool League
The Diablo Valley Pool Women’s league has been running leagues since 1995. We are composed or women whose only goal is to play pool and be part of a competitive environment in preparation for a National tournament held in Las Vegas yearly. Not everyone chooses to go to the tournament however most of us choose to be part of an organized handicapped system which protects the new players heavily. Last year we were contacted by Laura and Pat. They wanted to find out about our women’s league. We welcomed them and placed them in a team composed of new players, under the lead of one of our experienced players. We currently have 63 women participating on a summer-fall session, in a total of 12 PAT AND LAURA IN FIRST CLINIC 2006 teams. Laura and Pat embraced the BCA rules, the tough competition from all players, the handicap system, the fact that they were our only senior members with lots of interest to learn but with limited knowledge of the game at the time. They were part of our first pool clinic taught by our recently deceased teacher Dave Piona. These two players are now on their second season. Their experience the first season showed us the being a Captain of new players takes particular skills including lots of patience and willingness to guide and explain as needed. These two players have improved LAURA tremendously; they attended the recent Safeties clinic offered by BCA certified instructor Larry Davis. They understand the handicap system and are taking advantage of it; they are learning the importance of safeties. More than anything they are having fun and look forward towards each Wednesday league night, even though typically they face mostly more experienced players. Cost of the Safeties clinic was $25 per player however participants only had to come up with $15 as DVPL paid for the rest from its expense account. A total of four players attended this clinic. When I asked the girls their thoughts about the safety clinic this was their

response: Laura felt “he went a little fast for me and I really would have preferred more time to practice, as a way of helping retain what he was trying to pass on, rather than being talked at on and on , I was sorry not to have pen and paper to take notes, and/or that he didn’t have any handouts prepared showing those basic calculations for PAT - INSTRUCTOR LARRY DAVIS bank shots, to help me/us retain what he showed, once we’d left. Pat and I got home and found we were fairly muddled, more than we had expected to be.” “Pat says she found it very beneficial; the instructor was easy for her to hear and follow, and had a lot to offer. She thought his way of making a bridge at the rail was particularly useful, and the introduction to learning how to make bank shots, and how and why to “hide the cue ball” also was very enlightening.” When I asked the girls their thoughts with regards to being part of our women’s league these were their LARRY SHOWING TANGENT LINE response: ‘I have really enjoyed meeting all these “strangers” and becoming acquaintances, and who knows, maybe some will become good friends. I’ve gone from being slightly interested in pool — I got involved primarily because I knew Pat had always wanted to play more, and a women only league suited us best — to becoming “hooked” and really enjoying the art of it. I think the league is run just swell! — from a newcomer’s point of view, I’d just really make sure newbie’s have a captain who is communicative and warm and generous. When asked about the handicap system (125%): “Handicap mostly works; a truly perfect handicap would make us all even, and as it is, the “worst” teams are generally at the bottom, so to me that means the handicap isn’t quite high enough; but I am sure you would never get the “old-timers” to agree with more than BARBARA, PAT, LAURA,LARRY, CONY 1.25! As a final thought from Laura”: “.... think is pretty neat, about this women’s league we’ve joined ... that you have 18 year olds to seniors (us), all joined together for the love of pool ... and even some mothers and daughters ... a very supportive comminuty of players ...

Sam’ s St ra ight Pool Sam’s Stra raight from: Bill Bradford
Free Pool Videos
There’s a new player in Portland and he turned a few heads at the 14-1 Tournament at Sam’s Billiards on September 2nd. Three weeks ago Damian Rebman moved from Santa Barbara to Portland. He was delighted to hear there is a Straight Pool Tournament in Portland, and when we saw him play we understood why. This young man can play. He had at least 4 runs of 19 or more, marching through the field of players undefeated, ending the day with a run a 29. Buzz Poleson was the only one to score more than half as many points as Damian, losing to him in the final match 50 to 28. He has a sweet stroke, a sharp eye, and excellent cue-ball control. We’ll be looking forward to watching him match up against Bob Zack, who didn’t participate in today’s tournament. The Labor Day weekend tournament only brought out 12 players, but the tournament went well. Next month’s first-Sunday-of-the-month tournament is October 7, which is also the registration deadline for the Straight Pool League at Sam’s Billiards. The League starts October 14. The $65 registration fee covers 9 weeks of free table time up to 7 PM daily. The League has a simple handicap system. All players with winning records finish in the money with the playoff tournament on December 15. Call Vinny Mellot at 503-572-9921 or Bill Bradford at 503-284-2992 for more information. The final results of the September 2nd tournament were as follows: 1st $60 Damian Rebman 2nd $45 Buzz Poleson 3rd $25 Chad Kurokawa 4th $15 Sam Rabito High Run: 29 - Damian Rebman

The Infamous “Cool Down” Stroke
Samm Diep (c) May 2007 I’ve recently noticed a strange phenomenon that I like to refer to as the “cool down” stroke. It is exactly as it sounds - the opposite of a warm up stroke. A cool down stroke is when a player’s cue is still stroking after they’ve already struck the ball and the shot is complete. In my observations, there are two different types of cool down strokes. The first is the classic runaway stroke. It’s as if their cue never stops moving. It’s out of control. Wait! Come back! It’s stroking before the hit, it strikes the ball, and it continues stroking afterwards. The fact that Samm Diep the player contacts the cue ball at all is just a circumstance of one extended warm up stroke. The other one is the checking stroke. This typically occurs after a missed or poorly stroked shot. Some players have really made this a part of their routine. They feel an immediate need to double check what they were doing. Typically, the expression on their face reads, “Like this? No. Like that.” I suppose in this case the cool down stroke could be a good learning tool. I guess the player that uses this is checking to see if their cool down stroke is the same as the actual stroke they just used. Are they checking their alignment? Are they simply trying to stay loose? I’m not quite sure. The biggest obstacle with the cool down stroke is that, at its truest form, just about in every instance that I’ve seen it used, it is so soon immediately following the ball contact that the player is unable to follow through fully. They are almost lassoing their stroke back instead of delivering a full acceleration through the cue ball. Do your strokes still count after you’ve already contacted the ball? Does what you do AFTER the shot change the outcome of the already completely shot? Stroke and keep stroking all you want, but once that ball has left your tip there is nothing you can do to change the results. I’ve never seen Johnny Archer or Karen Corr with any extra movement after they strike the cue ball. They are steady, concise, and deliberate, keeping the excess to a minimum. Therefore, instead of wasting the energy on stroking your cue afterwards, direct it towards all the essentials in properly executing the shot before and during. Direct it towards your pre-shot routine, your ball address, your stance, the contact point, your warm up strokes, and delivering a calculated shot. These are the things that affect the outcome of the shot, not the cool down strokes afterwards. Good Mechanics Capone Wins Main Streets 8th Anniversary 8-Ball Extravaganza Step One Article courtesy of: AZPoolScene.com
In my last article I talked about certain mechanics being very helpful in the maintenance of good fundamentals, and good fundamentals being the certain properties than make for a good, consistent stroke. For review, I’ll identify the “fundamentals” once again. They are: Straight Alignment, Level Cue, Staying Down, and Following Through. Now let’s take a closer look at what I mean by straight alignment. (The Roger Long diagrams below assume that the player is right-handed, so just reverse everything if you are left-handed.) Diagram A depicts what instructional books and videos mean when they say that alignment should be “in one plane”. This is what you should want your alignment to look like if you could see yourself from an overhead view. It shows five points of alignment: the bridge hand, the chin (or dominant eye), the right shoulder, the right elbow, and the right hand. These should all be aligned together. The first four points should remain locked in place while the grip hand and lower arm execute the stroke. When this alignment technique is properly employed, it will provide the most accurate shot achievable because it eliminates all except the essential body movements; the grip hand will simply be pulled straight back, and then will be pushed straight forward. Diagram B shows a back view of the lower arm alignment. This is the arm position that you should use in conjunction with a pendulum stroke. If you line up everything; bridge hand, chin, right shoulder, right elbow, wrist, and hand, all in one vertical plane, all you will have to do is pull the stick straight back, and then let it go straight forward. Nothing moves except the forearm and hand. That is the simplest way to achieve a straight stroke. It should be easy to see that if the lower part of the arm is angled in towards the body, or out away from the body, while everything else is lined up and held in a vertical plane, then, during the stroke, the grip hand would have to swing in an arcing motion, causing the tip of the cue to waver from side to side. Next month we’ll look at a couple more mechanical practices that can help you develop better fundamentals.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF: WILLIAM BUFFALO GOODWIN By: TR Olson
On December 6, 2006 the pool world suffered another great loss. William Buffalo Goodwin born February 25, 1958 passed away after a valiant fight with hepatitis and cancer. From 1997-1999 Billy put me on the road as a representative for his business, Buffalo Bill’s Billiards Supply. His support was a God sent to a struggling pool player like myself and thanks to him I was able to experience things I otherwise never would have. Playing 4-20 hours a day on his perfect Gold Crown didn’t hurt my pool game any either. I would personally like to make it known that pool was more than a business or a game to Billy, it was a passion that he lived and loved to share with anyone and everyone. From the way he would put his own interests aside to show someone how to shoot a jump shot, Buffalo Bill to the way he would stop everything that was going on in his world just to watch a good pool player in action. He and I shared this love so much that when we would go to Reno or someplace like that we would play pool a couple hours a day and watch matches up to 12 hours a day. Sounds crazy, huh? Well, it wasn’t one bit crazy to him and I; it was an undying passion for the game. He truly couldn’t get enough. A passion that very few others I have met shared with me to the extent he did. I remember one time in particular. It was a Friday night in Reno and
had gone to the all you can eat seafood buffet at the Atlantis. We were so stuffed when we came back to the Sands we supposedly had only one intention. Going and laying in our motel rooms and being miserable from the five pounds of fresh shrimp we had consumed, but Billy insisted we make a stop by the poolroom to see if there was any action, and there was. It was Harry Platis playing Ron Weisman one pocket for $2000 a set, if memory serves me correct. After laying back in the bleachers for about 5 or 6 hours watching the playing and barking, I asked Billy, “so what do you think” and he responded “I don’t think I’m ever gonna eat shrimp again.” In true Billy fashion we finally made it to the room, be it 5 or 6 hours later. Mind you being 5 or 6 hours late was actually like being on time for him. Goodwin That pretty much sums up Billy’s general outlook on life. All else can wait for pool, fishing, guns, friends, family, oh and last but not least “food.” Although Billy was a very knowledgeable player and spectator when it came to pool, he never had the chance to pursue pool the way he would of liked in his younger years. For many reasons, the most important of which were work and raising his four children: Tamara, William Jr “BJ”, Natalie, and Seth. Working to support them and himself consumed his prime years if you will, but he wouldn’t have had it any other way. When I asked him once why he backed me in pool the way he did, he told me “that he was getting to live his dream through me,” wow no pressure there. Again for those of you who didn’t know him personally you can start to get a sense of the type of man I am talking about here. He would rather share his dreams with someone as opposed to follow them alone. That is exactly what he did for the last almost ten years of his life is follow dreams, not only his, but those of all he came into contact with. One of the biggest dreams and dreamers that fulfilled the end of his life was his beautiful wife Amber. They had what many of us long for in life, love and dreams, they didn’t just have these things, they shared them in every way and lived both out to the fullest extent for the last 10 years or so. Having lost the love of my life almost two years ago my heart bleeds for Amber as she struggles through this very difficult time. However, I know that like my wife did for me, Billy empowered her both alive and in spirit, enabling her to handle this situation with the utmost of grace, notice I didn’t say ease. I know that with the strength he passed (Buffalo Bill continued on page 21)

Alexander’s held an 8’s only eight player Round Robin 9-Ball tournament on September 15th & 16th, 2007. The format called for all eight players to play each of the other seven players, once, in a race to nine games. The two players with the most match wins, of their seven matches played, then advanced to the finals. Winning the finals was worth $1100.00 and losing the finals (2nd place overall) was worth $500.00. All other six players, not in the finals, were shut out and received no prize money. The entry was $200.00 per player. Alexander’s invited the eight participants. Terry Tucker, with five match wins, and Brandon Butler, with six match wins, made the finals. Terry won the finals while Brandon settled for second place overall. on to her she will get through this. This is yet another testament to all that he believed in. He was above all in life a true friend and an enthusiastic teacher. A teacher of many things, not just things like pool, but a teacher of life, love, and friendship. For those who knew Billy you can really appreciate this story and for those of you who didn’t I just ask you to imagine how funny this was. Billy had bought tickets for him, Amber, and myself to go see Eric Clapton in Calgary. We took off in his beautiful SS Impala, with Amber looking stunning as always sitting in the back seat and him and I, both cracking the scales at least 300. For those of you who know us that is not the funny part so give it a rest. And as always he was in full garb with long hair in pony tail, gold rings on every finger, and of course he was wearing one of his hundred or so Harley-Davidson t-shirts and black jeans. When we got to the border and the guard started asking us questions, can’t blame him cause I myself would have to say we looked, well for lack of a better word, a bit Mafioso if you will. After the usual “where are you going” and “how long are you staying,” the guard asked Billy how much cash we had on us. He responded, “ I don’t know $5000 give or take.” As you might guess that bought us a trip (Buffalo Bill continued on page 23)
2007 VNEA Sportswomen’s Champions: Eagles 4 Susie McRae, Christine MacDonald, Carrie Miller, Becka Larkin
The ladies of the Eagles 4 Team placed second in the tournament to win a trip to Las Vegas for the VNEA Nationals, so they paid their own entry and expenses for the chance to compete. They were out of the national tournament after three rounds but decided to stay and play in the Sportswomen’s Team Championships. Their team spirit and desire to play their best was rewarded when they took first place. Eagles 4 is part of the Women’s League of Rocky Mountain Gaming from Bozeman, Montana. We congratulate these fine Sportswomen on their victory. A video interview with team members is on www.otbntv.com

up Brigid there was Mel Furgeson an old time player from Portland who I had not seen in 20 years. The work force had now Expanded to Four and we buzzed right along and with the purchase of a belt-disc sander I was able to figure out how to do Jim’s table in Chico. Again, we leveled and re-leveled until we got the table right. We took care of the carbon streaks and bonded the seams bringing the whole gang of people out of the building. Since I am a senior a hate to comment about the over reaction of the center. They were sure that I was practicing chemical warfare. In 40 years of using filled polyester resins this was the first time any one commented. We replaced the pockets with linen bags and we were off to Chico again with a new spirit. We took the rails off, Brigid and Herb pulled the staples and with Brigid on my case about not being able to talk and work at the same time we had the rubber on for snooker matches that night. Sabrina, Jim’s wife , had prepared a fantastic dinner for a full house and patio of guests. Jim manned the largest barbecue machine I ever saw and by 11:00 PM Brigid and I were able to eat. We were invited to spend the night and at 5:00am we were up and ready for our next stop in Medford, but that is another story. The goal from the end of the previous season’s League carries to the beginning of the next. We’re expecting over 16 players. Thanks, everyone, for keeping the interest in straight pool alive in the Northwest!

inside to answer even more questions and long story short Eric Clapton had to go on with out us that night. Although Billy was an accomplished Chef, pool player, glass blower, fly tier and fisherman, businessman, well let’s just put it this way he was accomplished at whatever he put his mind to. Nowhere in those things did he find his true sense of pride. His true pride and sense of accomplishment came from being a father, a lover, and a friend like no other. And just being these things wasn’t enough for him he liked to share and teach these qualities to all that would listen. I know I personally took many bits of wisdom away from my time with him and I think all that truly knew him could testify to the same. I have also been informed that Billy’s 19-year-old son “BJ” is a spitting image of his dad as far as his style around the pool table. If there were one thing Billy would have liked to pass on to his children it would have been just that, STYLE. After all he was a man of impeccable class and style. All of Billy’s friends, family, and pool colleagues would like to invite you to a spectacular weekend of pool being held in his honor. There will be a $5000 added 8-ball men’s events, a $2500 added women’s event and a Calcutta and early bird tourney held November 9, 10, 11 at the 8-Ball Inn in Great Falls, MT. The weekend will kick off on Friday the 9th with the Calcutta and mini tourney starting at around 7 PM, followed by a full weekend of pool. I feel truly honored to have been asked by Amber to write this article and hope you can all attend this great weekend of pool. See ad back cover

Jeanette Lee Wins Empress Cup Article and photos courtesy of: Dragon Promotions
Chun Cheon, Korea- Jeanette Lee went undefeated to become the 2nd Annual Empress Cup Champion. The Empress Cup drew record breaking TV ratings last year in Korea and even pushed #1 rated sport baseball back in its live broadcast. The Dragon Promotions produced event comprised of 6 of some of the world's most talented and beautiful ladies players in a round robin format. This year's players were Shanelle Loraine of Guam, Isabelle Krafczyk of Germany, Ga Young Kim of The Lovely Stars of the events Korea, Yu Ram Cha of Korea, Miyuki Sakai of Japan, and Jeanette Lee of USA. The event was sponsored by the city of Chun Cheon in conjunction with their annual sports festival which included competitions in skating, roller blading, bass fishing, and break dancing. The billiards event was the main attraction on center stage and was aired live for 4 hour broadcast on MBC ESPN, Korea's #1 network. Isabelle Krafczyk won her first international TV debut by defeating Shanelle Loraine in the first match. Next Ga Young Kim looked on her way to dominate Japan's Sakai but missed a very easy routine 9-Ball to win the match 3-0. Instead Sakai mounted a great comeback at the cost of Kim's error and won 3-2. Next Koean Womens Champion Yu Ram Cha shut out Krafczyk 3-0 and then Jeanette Lee defeated Sakai 3-1. Cha clinched her finals berth by crushing Loraine her next match and Kim needed to defeat Lee 31 to force a tie breaker but could not overcome the Black Widow and lost 3-1. The players were placed in two groups and the finals would pit the top finisher in each group against each other. Lee crushed Cha in a whitewash in 2006 Empress Cup. So Cha and Lee would face each other in a rematch of last year's Empress Cup round robin match, except this time this would be for the title. Despite Cha making a superb out in the first game whicj included two difficult bank shots, Lee won the first set 2-1. The second set was won by Cha 2-0 after Lee made a terrific thin cut shot on the 9-ball only to have the cueball go two rails for a Jeanette Pleased the crowds and herself with the win scratch. Lee and Cha one set each. This would push the finals to a sudden death 1 game match. Cha won the lag and had an opportunity to run out but stymied herself on the 5 ball and opted for a safety. Lee came to the table hooked but went for a masse instead of a jump shot. She curved the cueball perfectly to pocket the 5-Balll length of the table and then shot a nervy long straight 6-ball and finished off the 7,8,and 9-ball perfectly with a concluding fist pump announcing her victory. "It feels good to win a 9-Ball event here finally. It's a good start to this week's competitions." said Lee. Lee can now add the Empress Cup 9-Ball title alongside her Queen of Carom and Women's Trickshot Challenge wins. In Korea Lee has now won in 3 disciplines in 3-Cushion, Artistic Pool, and 9-Ball. The Empress Cup was also supported by billiard industry sponsors Brunswick Billiards and Predator Cues. Video results of this tournament are on www.otbntv.com

THE FINAL CHINA 11 - 10 FINLAND CHINA ARE the 2007 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool champions after holding off a marvelous comeback from Finland at the Outland Nightclub in Rotterdam. It was a fantastic victory for Li He-wen and Fu Jian-bo and they can look forward to receiving all the plaudits when they return to their home country. 11-10 was the final score but at 10-6 up and breaking for the match, a Chinese victory seemed a certainty but a combination of nerves and some terrific Finnish heart took the game into a thrilling final Team China rack. Immonen broke and got a ball down and there was potential for Juva to make a 1-9 combination. The deliberation took for ages as the Finnish pair of Immonen and Markus Juva sized up their options and in the end Juva took it on but the 1 ball didn’t even connect with the 9 and it ran up table. However, it left a 1-6 combination on and China made it to regain control of the table. The question was whether their nerves would hold up and they slowly inched their way towards the title. Fu Jian-bo pocketed the 9-ball to spark scenes of joyous celebration as China were the World Cup winners. The Chinese players pocket $30,000 each while Finland can console themselves with a $15,000 pay day each. Earlier, Fu missed a shot to win the Cup with the score at 10-8 before Li then nervously scratched in the next when China were two shots from glory as Finland forced only the third hill-hill match of the tournament. China had beaten South Africa, France, Philippines and Japan on their way to the final, while Finland defeated Qatar, England, Switzerland and Canada. In the semi-final, Finland had used the soft-break and positioned the cue
ball in exactly the same position on their way to a 9-0 victory. However, this tactic was not as effective in the final as Finland, who won the lag, saw a dry break to give China an early opportunity. They appeared to have wasted their chance as the Finnish duo of Immonen and Juva were back at the table, although Immonen lost position going from the 8-ball to the 9-ball and Juva missed the subsequent 9-ball. Video results of this China sunk the same ball for 1-0 but then tournament are on recorded a dry break of their own, the first www.otbntv.com time in this tournament where there had been two successive dry breaks. But they still won the rack, thanks to a 3-9 combination from Fu Jian-bo. Amazingly, there was then another dry break from China, the third in a row. Juva failed with an attempt at the 6-ball but Fu Jian-bo then was not successful with an effort at the 7-ball, the 23rd time the 7-ball had been missed in the tournament, and Finland made it 1-2. In the fourth, Immonen missed with his shot to kick off the rail and connect with the 1-ball and that proved costly as China made it 3-1. It was soon back to a one-rack gap as Fu could not down the 1-ball and a long bank from Immonen helped it become 2-3. Finland had broke and run out five times in the semi-final and did for the first time in this match to tie the score at 3-3. Yet another dry break, the fourth in seven racks, brought Finland back in action but Juva gifted the rack to China when he scratched as the score was now 4-3. It was level again after Fu produced a gaff on the green 6. China regained the lead after a crucial miss from Juva on the 1ball following yet another dry break as Finland were unable to reproduce the success from the break they had in the semi-finals. For the first time since the early stages of the match, China moved two ahead at 6-4 before another dry break in the 11th from China and it was 6-5. The 12th was an error-filled rack as Juva laid a tight safety and Fu was miles away from connecting with his desired target, but Immonen later lost position and (World Cup continued on page 27)

World Cup (continued from page 25) the lead was back at two with it being 7-5. China ran through the next rack and at 8-5 had the biggest advantage than at any other stage of the match. But they were still another three away from the title. Both sides had used soft breaks in this match but Fu opted for power in the 14th and it seemed the right decision as the 1-ball disappeared with a straightforward shot on the 2-ball. Within seconds it was 9-5 as China had now stamped their authority on the match with Finland desperate for another chance. There had only been ten dry breaks in the previous 30 matches but now China produced the sixth in only 15 racks during the final. Finland did the rest and it was now 6-9 to China. After another dry break, the seventh in 16 racks, the frustration was showing as Immonen slammed his fist down on the table after he left his partner with no shot on the 2. China moved to the hill and were now one potential shot away from the victory. But, for the eighth time in this encounter, no balls went down on the break shot as Finland were clinging on but the thinnest of margins. Finland were thrown a tournament lifeline as Li, aiming to make the 2 into the right side pocket, watched in horror as the cue ball vanished into the top left pocket. That gave Finland ball-in-hand and Juva held his nerve with a fine long-range pot the 9-ball for 10-7. The Finnish pair had been successful in the semi-final with the soft break but Juva now went for power and got an instant reward for three off the break and his team ran out in one of the fastest racks of the final for 10-8. Despite hitting the cue ball hard in the next, Finland had no luck and the ninth dry break of the match came at the worst moment for the Europeans. The safety shot was not good enough and China moved through the balls and Fu Jian-bo had an attempt to win the World Cup. He tried to roll the 9ball down the right rail but the ball rattled in the jaws of the bottom right pocket but did not drop. Juva showed nerves of steel by sinking the 9-ball but were China going to regret that crucial error? In a hugely dramatic final, Juva then scratched off the break to give China ball-in-hand and again in sight of victory. Li He-wen pocketed the 8-ball but in an unbelievable error the cue ball ended up in the right centre pocket. Juva again disposed of the 9-ball and it was hill-hill for only the third time in the tournament. However it was not be for the Finns as Team China sealed a magnificent week as they became PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool Champions.
