The third place team, Underrated with, Jonathan Hahn, Hershell Blaylock and Shayne Dunckley had wins over Ted Woodward, Vernon Joe, and Bob Sandy, then over our best looking team and only women’s team, Rhiannon Stewart, Wendy Sedlacek, and Kashia Wilcox, then Pat Vise, Victor Nayola, and Al Pedro, then Junior T, Jing, and Brad before losing to Raul, LT, and Sergio.

Our next event will be a two person eight ball, one master and one open player on November 15th and 16th. All women can play as open players, come enjoy the fun at the Island.

Half-Ball Secrets By: Bob Jewett

In my last column, I went into a little detail on aiming halfball shots. Just aim the middle of the cue stick and cue ball directly to the edge of the object ball, and you get close to a 30-degree cut.

This month I’m going to let you in on a first secret about Bob Jewett the half-ball shot that is useful in position play — what happens when you hit the shot with good draw.

If you’ve studied the game at all, you know that the cue ball leaves the object ball at a right angle to the path of the object ball — along the tangent or kiss line. Of course, if the cue ball has follow or draw when it hits the object ball, the path will be bent away from that perpendicular path, forward for follow and backward for draw.

The useful secret of the half-ball with draw shot is that the cue ball will end up traveling perpendicular to its own original path. This is illustrated in Diagram 1. The shot can be very useful, but it requires some care if you want it to work right.

First, you have to have what might be called “perfect draw” on the cue ball. For most players, this is as far below center as they can hit without miscuing. Also, the cue ball must be relatively close to the object ball, or too much draw will be lost on the cloth on the way to the object ball.

You need to be careful to get an accurate hit on the object ball. The two lightlyshaded “ghost balls” in the diagram will aid in your set up. If all three balls are frozen, with the two helpers parallel to the long rail, and the lower helper and the object ball pointing to the pocket, you are set up for a half-ball shot. Remove the helpers, and point your stick at the edge of the object ball.

Note that there is a curved section of the path of the cue ball just as it leaves the object ball, before the curve finishes. After the draw has been spent, the cue ball will continue in a straight path. If you shoot softly, the curve will not be as wide. If you shoot harder, the curve will be larger, and in the shot shown, it might touch the side cushion before it straightens out to run parallel to the cushion. Unfortunately, the sharpness of the curve also depends on how clean the cloth and ball are.

In the position shown, you should be able to pocket the nine ball within five tries.

Be careful about your setup, and especially be careful about how much draw you are using and how hard you hit the cue ball.

The concept of this shot is not just useful for a precise half-ball hit. If you find yourself in a similar situation, but with a slightly fuller hit required to pocket the ball, you know that it should be possible to pull the cue ball back from the right angle.

Try moving the cue ball just half a ball down, so the shot is a little fuller, and see if you can pull the cue ball back to the middle of the end cushion with a thicker hit.

BCA Player V iew View Sincerely written by: Claudia Justus, Amateur BCA player As the month has past for the Arizona BCA championship, which was held in Payson, Arizona at the Matazel Casino with beautiful Diamond Tables to play on, and the great Mini-Tournament throughout the week, it was some of the great fun events that happened during the middle of August, and even though the turnout was not as great as past years, with 27 teams and 127 players, the results are still fun to read about.

Who’s skills surpassed and who surprised us for that week, and so what were the results?, they are now out, so who successfully won in the Open Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Master Player’s and you get to see the photographs of all the winners.

You read about the great competitions held in each tournament for Singles, Master’s, Male and Female alike, and it’s exciting to read and know that you were part of this annual event.

Then there comes the Story about Team Championships, and when you read it in the article # 203 of the breaking new on the Arizona Pool Scene website, it really ramps up the Idea of Team Competition, It just gets you excited to know what the outcome would be, then seeing the comment “everyone was aware of the one team to beat”, and “that there were many teams that had a chance to take home the title.” but I can say I’m not surprised by the outcome, not saying that the other teams were any less, but when you look at the skill of these players then it was a high percentage belief, that it would be the 10 rated team, I then observed some of the other teams suddenly realizing that these players were there as a team, and they came to wonder how this happened? What were the reasons this was happening, and what were the State BCA requirements; regarding Teams, was it the same as in Las Vegas? Was it one master player per team?

So there wasn’t anything written, but we heard about the questions from player’s on teams who wanted to know what were the rules and why it wasn’t it communicated earlier on these unexpected changes by the Arizona State BCA Committee, what were the reasons for these unexpected changes.

There was a statement on the BCA Report that a BCA note book was in hand, but about the rules for State BCA Requirements, were they at hand?, is there anything in writing? As I have never seen these, only when the nationals have made changes have I seen them given to players.

When situations occur and can create conflicts for the team and players especially, when it comes to a master’s level playing as a team in the Men’s Team tournament, it’s bound to bring many questions and speculation for these unforeseen events, so yes, it was verbally stated there is no rule for who can play, but was this information given to all league operators’s to relay to the team captains, and if so would there have been the same outcome?

Did anyone see how this affected the players, the confusion of it, the sudden knowledge that if you were fortunate enough be in the bracket to meet up with the great team with the caliber of skill that is the team to beat, and yes they are all Arizona rated 10’s, Cops & Robber’s out of the past Alexander Lounge, these players who have excelled in their field of play, players who are US Bar Table Champion, BCA Master Division Champion, and no less they are all in the top 10 of the lead points in the Arizona Desert Classics Tour, and we respect this great achievement and we as amateur player’s alike love to watch these player’s and have the up most respect for them at their skill.

But, it makes me question, what was the intention of these players to do this to the league players? Was it a fair and ethical decision made by the Arizona BCA committee and in knowing this information, what the repercussion would be for these players and the teams? How this would affect its outcome? The percentage of this I would not want to say, or even try to guess. Then, what uncertainty the teams felt.

I know in speaking with a few of the player or team captains, that some felt disappointment, and to some extent, they felt swindled, where as other players enjoyed the opportunity for competition at the higher level of skill.

So was there any communication brought for solutions or options given?

What I observed, were that some of the teams & players just played silently, and attempted to make it the best they can. I doubt that if teams knew ahead of time about these conditions, would there have been more (Opinion continued on page 21)

Paul Newman died Friday September 26, 2008 at his farmhouse near W e s t p o r t , Connecticut following a long battle with cancer at the age of 83.

For pool players Paul Newman is best remember for his role as the pool hustler “Fast Eddie Felson” in the movie “The Hustler”. Alongside Jackie Gleason, Newman made infamous the life of a hustler, from seedy pool hall to seedy pool hall in the hopes of beating the legend himself, “Minnesota Fats” (Gleason). This movie had its debut in 1961 and brought pool playing to a new level of interest. The effect the movie had on the pool industry was astounding. Newman took on a role in a seemingly unconsequential sport and made everyone who played the game proud. This pride translated into a new interest in pool, the resurgence of pool halls and more and more Americans participating in the sport.

As an 18 year old, ’10 foot tall and bullet proof’, I found my way to my first pool hall in 1966 and all anybody could talk about was the movie, “The Hustler”. “The Hustler” was playing across the street at the Bijou. It was a second feature, sort of like a rerun today. I sat in my seat in awe. This was what I wanted to be. The movie from its beginning became synonymous with the game.

In 1986, Newman reprised his role as “Fast Eddie” and starred in a movie with Tom Cruise called, “The Color of Money” for which he won an Oscar. In the movie, Paul Newman, demonstrated what many pool players thought of a cocky, brash, stick swinging, mouthy, pool player that is trying to prove who he is. Tom Cruise played

this role to the hilt giving Newman a reason to almost hate and admire him in the same moment.

Was Cruise’s character any different than many players today?

Perhaps it was Mr N e w m a n ’ s character “Fast Eddie” that had mellowed, and knew who he was, comfortable in his own skin, that depict the pool players of today.

Paul Newman in “The Hustler” and “The Color of Money” was a hero to all pool players. He didn’t make a successful movie about pool once, but twice. These two movies to this day mark the rebirth of a sport that had fallen into oblivion and revived an interest in the psyche of a pool player and the mystique surrounding our sport.

Paul Newman made a lot of great movies and I want to personally thank him for that. He was not only a humanitarian but he walked the walk. “The Hustler” was unequivocally the standard of the life of the pool player. We as pool players were fortunate to have a true movie star portray the life of a pool player. By the time Newman did “The Color of Money”, he showed how you could be a gentleman at the table and play with honor. The pool community was very fortunate to have such a human being to represent the sport that we all love and adore each for our own reasons.

Pool players everywhere will remember Paul Newman with fondness and appreciation for his roles as “Fast Eddie”. If you are new to the sport and haven’t seen these movies, rent them, you won’t regret it, they are classics!

Road to the World - National Championship Series (NCS) Announces Qualifiers CueSports International (CSI) announces the first set of sanctioned qualifier tournaments for the National Championship Series (NCS) 8Ball National Championship.

The NCS is a unique series of 5 national championships in the following disciplines: 8-Ball, 9-Ball, 10-Ball, 14.1 Continuous and One Pocket.

The first event in the series will be the NCS 8-Ball National Championship. A field of 64 players from all across the United States, in addition to cash and prizes, will vie for an all expenses paid coveted spot to the (WPA) 2009 World 8-Ball Championships expected to be held again this coming April in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.

In order to qualify to play at the national level, players must compete in a sanctioned qualifier event and either be a U.S. citizen or eligible to hold a U.S. Passport (a requirement to represent the U.S. in WPA world championships). From November 2008 through January 2009 pool rooms across the U.S. will host qualifiers where (2) paid entries to the NCS 8-Ball National Champion will be allotted to the top finishers.

The final four was made up of familiar names in the Colorado tournament scene. On the winners side Bill Skinner faced off with Chris McDaniel after victories over Ed Christopher, Art Siever, Jeff Crawford, Peter Mercaldi, and “ATM” Andrew Pettinger. Chris reached this point with wins over Jared Valesquez, Greg Way, Jim Gardner, and Damond Lemoine. With a more successful break, Bill would get the better of Chris 6-3. Jasmin Ouschan Vivian won the lag, broke and with her trademark whistle, pocketed a ball and began the match by missing a thin cut on the one. She joked “ah it’s just the first game” but you could tell it was a wry comment.

Jasmin stepped up and thinned the 1 into the corner pocket and continued to make her way through the object balls.

Jasmin came to the table looking to extend her lead to 3 and began picking her way through the rack.

She easily maneuvered the table layout and Vivian, looking resolute, watched as Jasmin went up 3-0 in a matter of just a few minutes.

Game 5 saw both competitors fighting over control of the rack via the one ball, back and forth it went until finally, Jasmin had an open shot. Vivian would not be denied and ran out to finally get on the board!

The safety battle continued for several rounds, but Jasmin ran out to reach the hill.

Jasmin enjoyed the break advantage, pocketing the 7 ball, but the table layout forced her to play a safe which was successful in leaving Vivian a one rail kick. Although Vivian hit the one, the cue ball came off of the ball and scratched, giving Jasmin ball in hand. The 2 and 9 were tied up as were the 3 and 6, but not enough to prevent them from being pocketed. The 4 ball proved tight shape and Jasmin was forced to play safe, snuggling the cue ball up to the 8 and hiding the 4 ball from Vivian’s view. Vivian’s 2 rail kick shot missed the mark and Jasmin once again received ball in hand. Down went the 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 balls, for Jasmin’s first foray into the Finals this year! Vivian threw in the white towel as Jasmin was down on the 9 ball in concession.

The FINALS of the 2008 WPBA Carolina Classic began with Jasmin winning the lag, breaking, making nothing and leaving Jeanette to push out. Jeanette, after a tough match versus Norway’s Line Kjorsvik, appeared refreshed and ready to play as Jasmin, with her typical Austrian stare, came back to the table

ready to rumble and run out. She uncharacteristically missed the 3 ball, but didn’t leave an easy shot for Jeanette, who went for a bit of a flyer and missed. Jasmin was left with an open shot, methodically pocketing each successive ball. Jasmin drew first blood against the Black Widow, going up 1-0.

Game 2 saw Jeanette’s break come up dry, but Jasmin had no easy go of it on the 1 ball. She beautifully shot the ball though and continued running out, picking her way through a fairly difficult layout to sink the 9 and go up 2-0. Jasmin also had the break advantage, sinking a ball. She missed a 2 to the 9 carom but left Jeanette a tough cut which she missed. A safety battle ensued with Jeanette blinking first and Jasmin put together a tough but solid runout to extend her lead to 3-0.

After a failed jump shot in game 4, Jeanette ran 5 balls to finally get on the board, down 1-3. Jasmin broke and ran out to regain the 3 game lead, 4-1. In game 6, Jeanette’s break came up dry and Jasmin ran out to the 3 but missed, allowing Jeanette another chance at the table. She ran out to the 6 and even as she struck the cue ball, knew she’d missed the 6, crying out “Oh my gosh!” She left Jasmin with a side rail bank shot, which she missed, allowing Jeanette back to the table to face a thin cut on the 6.

She undercut it badly and Jasmin returned to the layout with a long but routine shot on the ball. Pocketing it cleanly, Jasmin had 3 balls left to win the 6th game, now up 5-1. Jasmin continued to dominate the racks, with Jeanette clearly out of sorts and before Jeanette could say boo, Jasmin was running out to win the tournament! 7-1.

James Fontin wins Colorado Junior State Championships The Wynkoop Brewing Company located in Denver, CO hosted the 3rd annual “2008 Colorado Junior State Championships” this last Saturday, September 27th. Kids ages 8-19 travelled from all over the surrounding states to participate in this prestigious event.

It was James Fontin from Denver, 19, who went undefeated winning five straight matches to become the 2008 Colorado State Champion. The last two years James finished 2nd & 3rd place but with his dedication and determination he challenged himself and won this year’s title with style winning 10-1 in the finals.

James won a $500 build-your-own pool cue donated by Jacoby Custom Cues, a custom Delta-13 rack, a trophy, and a “free entry” into the Dragon Promotions World Junior 10-ball Championships for 2009.

Malek Haj-Hussein from Colorado Springs, 16, was runner-up and won a trophy and a Delta-13 Custom rack, and third place was Brandon Baker, 16, from Wyoming who also won a trophy and a Delta-13 custom rack. All participants won a “free” subscription to Pool and Billiard Magazine thanks to Executive Editor Shari Stauch.

Cancer Benefit Pool T ournament Tournament

Kelsey needs your help Support the Kelsey Christensen Cancer Fund We, the owners of Jake’s Bar and Grill, Sharky’s Pool & Brew and the regional APA League Operator (American Poolplayers Association) will be hosting a Benefit Pool Tournament November 15th, 2008 to raise money for the family of three year old Kelsey Christensen, who has been stricken with malignant cancer tumors in the spine and brain that are extremely difficult medically and financially costly to treat.

Kelsey has a twin, and there are two other siblings in the home under the age of five years old. They are the children of Andrea Christensen, an APA member, living in the McMinnville area. Andrea, the sole caregiver of these four children, must provide transportation to Legacy Emmanuel Hospital Cancer Treatment Center in Portland several times a month. There have been surgical procedures as well, with the expectation that there will be more in the future. There is no health insurance in place and the medical expenses are exorbitant.

Our request to you is for donations of cash, gift certificates or goods or services that will be auctioned and/or raffled for cash at the benefit tournament in November.

APA, the single largest pool players association in the world, has readily agreed to sanction this tournament in order to maximize the exposure to the community as a whole.

More On Physical Fitness

Last month I told a story about how I had changed my diet and exercise practices for a year and how the results of which had a seemingly very positive effect on my playing performance. This month I’d like to delve a little deeper into the subject of physical fitness.

Now I know that this topic is not a favorite one with most pool players. Many of them would rather discuss the benefits of learning a good aiming system, or what tip grips the cue ball best. To them, thinking about physical fitness conjures up images of hard work and sacrifice.

Roger Long And they’re right; attaining a good state of physical fitness definitely does require those two things.

But how many things of real value in life come without hard work and sacrifice?

Have you paid attention to the top men and women professional players of the last decade? Have you noticed that most of them appear to be very fit?

I’m not going to mention any names here, but I’ve been told that several of the best players in the world maintain strict diet and exercise regimens.

And why shouldn’t they? These people are professionals, and professionals look for every advantage they can get in order to stay on top.

As I said last month, long and/or successive matches played under extreme pressure are very stressful. High stress leads to mental and physical fatigue; and fatigue can lead to failure. Therefore it stands to reason that the more conditioned a body becomes, the better it becomes at warding off physical fatigue.

Now let’s look at one of the benefits that physical conditioning can have on the mental game. Everyone knows that any kind of physical discomfort can be very distracting. Distraction can cause a loss of concentration, and a loss of concentration can be very detrimental to any pool player’s game. But think about this: the more physical discomfort you bring on yourself during physical training, the better you prepare yourself to deal with physical discomforts that arise during competition. That’s right! If you accustom yourself to focusing on your training goals while working your way through the pain that training is causing, the more you will be able to ignore physical discomforts that arise during a match, and the more you will be able to stay focused on your game.

Still another benefit to be derived from developing a well conditioned body is the added confidence it can bring. Many people are very sensitive about

their appearance. Some of them are so sensitive that they let their appearance become a mental distraction to themselves. For instance, if they are out of shape they may start to think they look bad, and may even wonder what other people are thinking about them when they are at the table. Whether this type of self-perception of one’s appearance is realistic or not, it is yet again mental activity that can detract from one’s performance.

Changing an out of shape body into one that is well conditioned can make these players feel better about themselves, and thereby help erase unnecessary, negative thoughts from their minds.

Now please be aware that I am not a doctor, a nutritionist, nor a psychologist.

I cannot give you professional advice on what is best for you as an individual.

All I am trying do here is relate a few of the benefits that I have personally experienced through the development of a physical fitness program. So before you make any drastic changes in your own lifestyle, I highly recommend that you consult your physician.

I also highly recommend reading The Pro Book by Bob Henning. In it, Mr. Henning has a whole chapter dedicated to the subject of conditioning.

SUMMER LEAGUE 2008 SEASON The 2008 summer session of the BCA Pool League was a long and winding road to the conclusion. Long because the usual 13 or 14 week season was 19 weeks, due to the amount of teams playing and winding because of the all the twists and turns during the year as far as who was going to be league champion. It was not decided until the final night and the winning team won by only half a round.

The Most Valuable Player race was not so close as Ryan Grimm and Linda Asleson dominated from the first week. Both played extremely well against some good competition throughout the summer. Runners up were Bill Luscombe and Gloria Scott.

As the 2008 Season winds down for the NWPA and the race for the top rankings gets tighter, it’s the regular players that can’t afford to miss a stop and keep an eye on the matches at tables next to them.

This is how it was at Jack’s Billiards in Lynnwood, WA on September 20th and 21st as tour stop #6 was held. With only one stop remaining, things (l to r) Chris Rogers (Tournament Director), Liz Cole, Cindy Sliva, are getting interesting.

Since both are top players in their own right, they know what it is like to be a player in a high end tournament. As we wound up on Saturday, a new aspect to Jack’s was seen, it seems that live music is now part of their lineup. The band was great and played all night, so next time you’re in the neighborhood, stop by and check it out.

But we were still back on Sunday morning to crown the next winner (poor Randy on four hours sleep). The A side semifinals had Liz Cole taking Jo Woodward 7-3 and Cindy Sliva over Jessica Orth 7-5. Jessica had beaten Kit Dennis in the first round then had to face her again as Kit fought her way through the B side and this time, despite holding a 5-0 lead, lost 7-5. Arlo Walsman beat Bob Zack in the finals to top off an outstanding tournament and head-to-head competition between the two great players.

Arlo also squeaked out the high run prize over Bob with a run of 46 to Bob’s high run of 45. They both played with such utter precision it was a shock to see them miss occasionally. Both shot making and position play were excellent.

Getting to the one and two spots required Arlo and Bob to play some very good players. Arlo beat Sam Rabito, Mitchell Henderson and Kevin Long in the qualifying round and Russ Hodgin in the finals before facing Bob. Bob beat Michael Jensen, Darin Walding, and newcomer Yao Ting Chen in the qualifying round and Mike Deitchman in the finals before facing Arlo.

In addition to the finalists, players with runs of 20 or more included Darin Walding (29), Michael Jensen (24), and Jim Gillespey (23).

Yao’s home town was probably the furthest away, but I forgot to ask what it was (thanks, Dan Yan, for serving as interpreter). We also welcomed back Mark McGregor from Auburn, WA, who played well enough to edge Buzz Poleson in a 50 to 49 match, but lost his chance to make the finals by losing to Russ.

participation or less, or even team player changes, but that also was not considered an option, as it was told to some of the captains that player had to be out of the same league, and there were some player who wanted to play with a team, outside of the league, even though it was still a BCA league.

But again, that was not an option, so they were told, and it seems there were inconsistencies on some of these issues. So if teams were given this information, it would have given them the opportunity to have caused to grieve this issue, or at least be better prepared.

In addition to this I also observed the Tournament Directors, who’s participation did give you an idea about a lot of favoritism to this awesome team during this event, I observed it verbally on the speaker with comments commending their skill, as a team or a player, which I didn’t see or hear much of that to other teams. It should be the agreement for Tournament Directors to display the appropriate professionalism of being objective and respectful to ALL players. And lastly those highly skilled players’s need to recognizing who they represent, and that they are all role models for the pool community and are obligated to display that manner with respect to all, for sad to say, that I have lost some respect for them, and I believe I am not the only one.

As in the BCA Report it states, 5 of the 6 events were won by the player and teams of Alexander and a total of the monies won was at least $ 4,650.which is a “True testament of the level of talent there” as stated, on the BCA Report.

I hope in the future these great players will continue to show this community though their support, and participation to enhance other teams in play and create a positive belief of this sport. I hope to see the Arizona State Tournament Committee take this information into consideration for the next year’s events and ensure that all players receive consistency in the rules, communication of the rules, encouragement, support and commitment for this annual event.

As I am a passionate player and love to compete to the best of my abilities, I enjoy watching, supporting and believe in this sport as it progresses and excels each year for Arizona players, I commend those who take on this task, and appreciate the work it takes, and lastly I hope to see this situation cleared and apologies given to those league players through the future changes.

Claudia Justus Bio - Billiards I began Billiards as a youth at home with family, and then returned to billiards in 1997 as an adult, mainly for recreational purposes. Then I came to a realization that this helped me to build my self confidence in this pressurizes skill. I enjoyed the opportunity to meet the challenges of pocketing and began my trek into increasing this skill and wanted to do more. I have been participating in the BCA leagues through teams for the past 7 years, and just in 2008 I played in my first singles event, and Scotch Doubles event, and placed 5th on the Arizona State BCA Championship. In 2007, I worked closely with a fellow player Greg Stone, (who recently passed on) from the Gila River Indian Community, to promote billiards to All Indian’s through a successful annual pool tournament which was added to the annual Tribal Fair event, called the Mul-Chu-Tha. 2008 we had players from surrounding reservations; New Mexico, Tucson, Wisconsin, as well as local city participate in the 64 person event.

In 2007, I was also introduced to 9 ball billiards on the 9 ft tables and this was another avenue I wanted to meet the challenges. So joining the AWBT in 2007 has brought even more to my world of pool with meeting the players that are currently on the tour and meeting new player’s from all over the country, and understanding the etiquette of professional women’s billiards, and what it takes.

I was given a great opportunity to go to Florida to represent Arizona and participate in the WPBA Regional Tournament of Championships for 2007, and participated in the first 2008 Western Women’s Amateur Open event, all though I didn’t place it was a great experience to go for a first year player and gave me the incentive to continue to participate and meet the personal goals I have, In addition, I continue to support other women to participate, I continue to grow as a bar box player improving my skills in 8 ball, 9 ball, scotch doubles, and hope to meet the goal I want to establish and support all player, organizers, and league operators. These are some of the event I have participated and most importantly, I am firstly and for mostly a mother, grandmother and sister, aunt, and friend and my family supports and believes in me and with heartfelt support this gives me ambition to continue on my journey.

SHOOTING FOR THE STARS TOURNAMENT, $60,000 RAISED FOR CHARITY

Community members from the Portland metro area gathered on Sunday, August 24 at the high-end El Gaucho Steakhouse to raise about $60,000 for the Hemophilia Foundation of Oregon and OHSUs Child Development and Rehabilitation Center, and they had a good time doing it. The seventh annual Shooting for the Stars event was a swanky, black-tie fundraiser presented by El Gaucho Portland’s general manager, Todd Moore, and fifteen-time world billiard trick shot champion, Mike Massey. The evening consisted of a lively auction and raffle, blackjack, poker, and craps games, a trick-shot exhibition by Massey, and a single-elimination 9-ball tournament—all of which, accompanied by an exquisite buffetstyle dinner.

Trophies and prizes were awarded to the top three finishers of the pool tournament. First place, awarded to Tony Bloom, sponsored by Ed Schwartz of American Steel, received a Tommy Bahama watch; second place, Celeste Trapp, founder of HairM, received a Meucci cue of the month for April 2007; and third place, Toeutu Faaleava, sponsored by Sarah Graves of Young’s Columbia Wine Company, Meucci cue of the month for April 2006. Steel tycoon Howard Hedinger sponsored two of the tournament players. The matches were played on two beautiful, regulationsize Brunswick pool tables, both of which provided by Apollo Pools.

Sherwood Dudley, El Gaucho’s esteemed maitre de, remarked, “It was a very exciting evening…a real organized affair. The beauty of it is that we had more people than last year. Next year, we’re planning to auction off another pool table like we have in the past.”

“One of best moments of the evening was watching Celeste knock Sherwood out of the tournament,” recalled tournament director Sam Rabito.

For $150, participants reserved a spot at the dinner table and indulged in El Gaucho’s baby back ribs, Dungeness crab cakes, fresh northwest oysters, and their house-specialty Caesar salad—to name a few of the delicacies—and drinks were included. An entry into the tournament was an additional $850. Items up for bid ranged from El Gaucho steak dinners to vacations in faraway places.

Hotshots family Billiards began an adult nine ball league Sunday September 21st. League will start at 6:00pm. The Non profit Pacific ACS league will run twelve weeks allowing its players to qualify for regional and national tournaments.

This league currently has openings for new members.

The BJACS (Beaverton Junior American Cue Sports) will begin there forth year of league Sunday September 28th. Juniors aged seven to twenty are invited to join. Each Sunday there will be competition as well as coaching for specific skill areas.

This league runs through mid December with the winter session starting January 21st. Last year four juniors (under 18 years of age) went to Nationals in Las Vegas Nevada to compete!

Pacific American Cue sports had a board meeting September 21st. A new president was elected to take over for our friend Bill Mildenberger. Craig Arnold will be the new president of PACS. Craig is committed to the future of the league continuing to maintain the high standards and goals as envisioned by Bill. Judy Griffith retains the secretary- treasurer position and Kelly Reynolds will continue as the Vice president.

The regional tournament dates were secured March 25th through 29th 2009 in Shelton Washington, Little Creek Casino. This regional tournament allows for all levels of ability as well as providing a selection of events (scotch doubles, singles eight and nine ball and team eight ball). WPBA Qualifier at Pacific Coast Classic

$500 Added WPBA Qualifier at Pockets, Tucson 26 Women from all over came to Pockets, Tucson to play in the AWBT’s 5th stop!

This was a $500 added paid WPBA Qualifier for the Pacific Coast Classic event!

Hill-hill was the name of the game this weekend!

Out of just the last 14 matches alone, 6 went hill-hill! Sunday started with the top 8 ladies.

The top 4 on the A side were: Iris Ranola from the Phillipines vs. Emily Wilmoth from Florida and Nicole Keeney from Colorado vs. Michelle Micik from Tucson. The top 4 women on the B side were: Phoenix ladies Sara Miller vs. Susan Willams and Tucson ladies Mary Moench vs. Lois Schmitt!

Iris defeated Emily (7-6) and Michelle defeated Nicole (7-6). They then went on to play each other in the hot-seat match. Iris won the match by the Iris Ranola score of 7 to 3 which earned her the coveted hot seat.

7th/8th place was determined when Sara lost to Susan (7-4) and Mary lost to Lois (7-1). 5th/6th place was determined when Nicole lost to Susan (7-6) and Lois lost to Emily (7-1). Susan won 4th place as she was defeated by Emily (7-5). Emily then went on beat Michelle (7-4) for 3rd place.

After all was said and done, two women remained. Iris Ranola and Emily Wilmoth.

Since this was a true double elimination format, Emily would have to beat Iris in two sets of a race to 7. Since both of these women came from so far away to play in this tournament, we new we were in for a great match! Iris won the lag and away they went.

The games Emily Wilmoth went back and forth until the score was 4-4. The ladies took a break, came back, and then Emily won the next two games which put her on the hill.

Iris quickly won the next 3 games which won her the set, the match and all the marbles! Congratulations to Emily for an awesome 2nd place finish and a big congrats to Iris for the win and the paid qualifier spot! We’ll be looking for you on TV at the WPBA Pacific Coast Classic Event!

12 women came back on Sunday to play in the free second chance tournament.

Congratulations to Ashea Erdahl for winning the hot-seat and then winning first place ($40)! Congratulations to Krystal Edmonson for 2nd place ($30) and to Pat Schultz for 3rd place ($20)!

The AWBT gave away 2 beautiful J. Pechauer Custom Cues at this event! The first cue was valued at $480. As promised at the beginning of the season, the tournament directors chose a random event to hold a player draw for this cue. Well guess what!

This event at Pockets was the event chosen and Sara Miller was the very lucky winner! The funny thing is, after years and years of buying tickets to try and win a

cue, she finally wins and it’s the one time she didn’t have to spend a dime!

Congratulations you lucky lady!

The second cue was valued at $560 and it was gorgeous! Congratulations to Pockets very own server Ceres (Sara) Pineiro for winning this stunning J. Pechauer Custom Cue! Thank you to everyone who bought tickets and for all your support. We raised $300 and all proceeds help the AWBT keep playing so we really appreciate it!

We were excited to have photographer Rick Schmitz from Rixx Images on hand snapping pictures of the women playing during both days of the tournament. A slide show of Ricks photographs played on the big screen all day Sunday! The women really enjoyed all the pictures and were able to purchase their favorites! It was a joy having you there Rick! We hope you’ll come back to future events!

A HUGE thank you goes out to Valerie, Eric and everyone at Pockets! We had so much fun! We love your pool hall! The new big screen TV’s are awesome and the new sitting area was perfect! MAX EBERLE GOES TO MANILA

Max Eberle was almost in a league of his own for the Bay Area’s first Ten-Ball tournament, held at California Billiard Club September 6 & 7. Nobody won more than five games against him. Max was one of four players from the Los Angeles area who came to the expansive Mountain View pool room for this qualifying tournament, and along with his first-place prize money, Max also earned tournament entry plus complimentary travel and lodging to Manila for the $400,000 World Pool Ten Ball Championship coming up September 29. This was one of only two qualifying tournaments held in the USA. When former California Billiard Corey Harper, MaxEberle, Tony Annigoni, Chris Swart Club owner Chet Itow put up his $50 entry fee shortly after the player’s meeting ball spotted. If you pocket a ball that you didn’t Saturday, that rounded out the field to a perfect call, of if your object ball goes in the wrong pocket, thirty-two. All matches were race-to-nine, double it stays down and your opponent has the option elimination, and with the World Pool to shoot or let you shoot again. Max began with 9-4 wins over Colin Mazaika, Terry Jones and Marshall Williams. On Sunday he reached the hot seat by defeating Corey Harper (95) and Tony Annigoni (9-2). Annigoni’s three Saturday victories were over Norman Rapelo (9-2), Chet Itow (9-4) and Alex Almendral (9-4). On Sunday he defeated George Michaels (9-8), lost to Max Eberle (9-2), then defeated Corey Harper (9-8) to earn the rematch with Eberle, and once again Max got him by a 9-2 score. Tony and Corey won free entry to December’s Reno Open along with their second and third place finishes. All entry fees were returned in prize money, and table time was donated by California Billiards. Ben and Chris and their staff at California Billiards were perfect hosts, as always. Ten-Ball might become a regular event, after hearing Chris say “This would be fun to do every year,” as we wrapped things up Sunday night.

Thirty of the top Northern California players tested their skills and competed for the $900 purse. Billy Palmer took first place after he and Warren aka Monk Costanza decided to call it quits after the first set of the finals. Billy’s only defeat in the tournament was to Mr. Costanza.

The 9 Ball event drew 41 players fighting for the $1,435.00 prize fund.

Billy lost the Hot Seat match to young gun Josh Edgar a new resident to the Sacramento area. Billy took the left Billy Palmer side finals in 4 straight games. Mr. Palmer then took the first match of the true double elimination 6-0 and then won the final match 4-0. When I handed Billy the $400 for first place, I told him “Congrats on wining the last 14 games” and looked a little confused and told me he wasn’t sure but he thought he played a little better after the Hot Seat match. We had a good laugh after that.

who was the comeback kid Saturday by overcoming deficits of 2-6, 0-4, and 0-5 before falling to Cindy. But there were no more comebacks and Kit won 7-3. She then faced Cindy, who having lost a hill - hill battle to Liz for the point, fought back to the finals by winning 7-5. The rematch was a close affair, but Cindy could never get on top and Liz pulled away at the end to win 9-6.

This will give Liz Cole a strong but not insurmountable lead heading into the last tour stop at The Parlor in Bellevue on October 11th and 12th. You can adjust the fuller hit back to the right-angle line by taking a little draw off the cue ball. How much? That’s why practice is necessary with this or any system — you must develop your feel for the shot. If the cue ball is further back, your perfect draw may degrade just the right amount to get the angle you want.

Similarly, if you are in a situation where the shot requires a hit thinner than half-ball, you know immediately that it will be nearly impossible to pull the cue ball back to the 90-degree line.

One more factor in this shot is the weight of the cue ball. Many cue balls that start out the same weight as the object balls are worn down in play from the constant abrasion of the tip and chalky cloth. You see “red circle” cue balls that have turned into “faint pink circle” cue balls because the owner is too cheap to replace worn-out equipment. Such a light cue ball will draw far more easily than a cue ball of the proper weight.

On the other hand, if you play on a coin-op table that uses a large cue ball — the traditional “bar ball” — you have the opposite problem. It will be much harder to draw the cue ball. How much harder? You already know how to find out, but more importantly, you now have a shot to test the equipment.

Also, if the cue ball is brand new and regulation size, but the object balls are old and worn down, you will see a little of the “bar ball” phenomenon.

Nick won 5 straight matches and Nate won 3 straight. This was the big brother’s day as he took down the match for the right to play McDaniel and a shot at the finals.

Nick continued to show his big heart not only streaking through his match with McDaniel 5-1, but taking care of the first set with Bill. Skinner would fight hard though and make it interesting the second set. However, Nick Smith prevailed again, winning his ninth set in a row to claim the $600 first prize.
