I still couldn't see what was going on. I used my size to push my way to a vantage point. There was absolutely no place to sit, let alone stand.

The action was all at the one lone pool table.

Someone in the crowd mumbled, “He’s pretty good.” With every step I shuffled I heard a different conversation, “He’s on a roll.” … “He beat me and my horse yesterday.” … “ … Houston, Texas last year.” … “What kind of a cue is that?” … “Didn’t we see him beat Buddy Hall and Cole Dickson in Tennessee years ago?” … “That lucky bastard.”

Somebody was obviously the talk of the town.

Thought Lucky had to be here watching what was going on. I was starting to get the picture. I couldn’t help but think, man, this is not what I expected.

Stretching up on my toes, I could see over the crowd some older, not so elegant guy unscrewing his cue and placing it in an old, beat up case. He spread out a whole lot of bills on the table. I did a double take… it looked like Lucky! I started to head for him; then realized it wasn’t him, just a close resemblance. I scanned the crowd, but didn’t see him anywhere. To my left I noticed the pay phone. Maybe I’d give Lucky a call right now and get the scoop.

While I was pondering that, faces began to stand out … some of the best bar table players around were in this room - plenty of road players, some old-timers, some young pool prodigys and some high-roller types you see at every big tournament. Even the famous Rail Birds and Bill Cress were there. There were a lot of gold chains and expensive threads. You'd think they were going to some formal event. I could smell the sweet aroma of sweaty money. E Pluribus Unum was obviously the spoken language here -- maybe more money in this room than in Fort Knocks. I wondered for a moment where the armed security was. Come to think of it, everyone was likely packing. I had never seen anything on this scale before, only minor versions, and mostly big talk, at some of the larger tournaments. Everyone was wolfing to gamble. SURE SHOT MOVES & EXPANDS

Sure Shot Billiards & Darts has moved into a new larger building in Richland, Wash., allowing owners Stephen and Yoanna Sawdey to expand their retail business and incorporate a pool room and coffee shop.

The Sawdeys have owned Sure Shot Billiards & Darts since 2000 and Steve has been repairing pool tables since the 90s, so they have established a solid customer base and trusted name in Eastern Washington over the past few decades.

The new 7,800-sq.-ft. space at 2602 N. Columbia Center Blvd. allows the Sawdeys plenty of retail room to display table games, cues, darts and game room accessories. And even more room for storage.

“I may not have it on the floor,” Yo said. “But we have or can get the best quality stuff out there.”

Previously, the Sawdeys rented two buildings at 5510 W. Clearwater Ave. in Kennewick—one for the retail store and one for the billiard room.

He tried to fit at least nine tables in a 2,400-sq.-ft. space in the store building, and another seven pool tables in a 1,800-sq.-ft. space for playing. “There wasn’t room for anything,” Steve said.

Having everything under the same roof helped him lower his overhead costs, allowing one employee the ability to staff the store and take care of the poolroom.

Parking is plentiful and easily accessible, now, as well.

Steve said their all ages pool room also fits in with the adjoining family-friendly businesses, Chuck E. Cheese and The Batter’s Box.

The location has increased visibility for the business and Yo said more parents and grandparents are bringing children in to play pool, in addition to the regular traffic provided by singles groups, church groups and birthday

parties.

Local BCA leagues are also being run out of the pool room, which features a 5 by 10-ft. Olhausen billiards table, a 5 by 10ft. snooker table, a 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown, four 8-foot tables and two 7-foot tables. The game room will also feature a shuffleboard and has a ping pong table.

remodeled the space from floor to ceiling, opening the retail space and billiard room in July. They will add a coffee shop, with a drive-thru window, and deli inside the space

by November. They plan to offer espresso, smoothies, Italian sodas, ice cream, hot dogs and panini sandwiches.

“We’re excited about the coffee shop,” she said. Sure Shot Billiards & Darts offers used pool tables of all sizes and pool tables from Presidential Billiards, a Texas manufacturer that features exotic solid hard wood tables from Zimbabwe. “They just have gorgeous tables,” he said. They are also an Olhausen dealer with tables made in the USA. Sure Shot is open every day from 10 a.m. to midnight. Individual pool players can play for $3 per hour before 6 p.m., or for $5 per hour after 6 p.m., and groups can get a reduced rate. Players can join the Billiard’Aires Club by paying $60 a month for unlimited table time. There is a senior and student discount as well. Call Sure Shot at 737-9868 for more information.

BLONDE CHALLENGE #2

On Saturday, September 25th, 2010, while everyone else was shopping, mowing lawns, etc., the real fun was happening at Q-Spot Billiards in Tulsa, OK. Shortly after 2:00 pm, Gene La Viness (of Crown Cues) and Gene La Viness Josh Smallwood began a 9 ball race to 7 ahead. The video camera was filming the match which was broadcast live, online.

The loser of this match would have to become a blonde for at least two weeks.

It was decided they would alternate breaks. Gene won the Josh Smallwood lag and the games began! Gene won the first two games, then Josh won three, then Gene won two... The match carried on in this manner for ALMOST ELEVEN HOURS and 147 GAMES!! The guys only ate during play and refused to stop for a lunch break, or to get some fresh air, call home or rest. The only breaks taken were during the few five to ten minute periods while the computer was rebooted for the live stream. Everyone knew Gene and Josh must be enduring a great deal of pain to continue the match so long, but nobody was giving up and signs of weakness were only evident in the ease of irritation when someone interfered or an easy shot was missed. Even the irritation was fairly well controlled, though. Both men were extremely dedicated to their match and kept a positive attitude throughout the day. They took whatever time was necessary to make the shot at hand and seldom gave up position to the opponent. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to determine the two were very well matched for this particular competition and fatigue might be the only factor which would allow a winner.

The area around the table was rather quiet, although the rest of the room was often rolling with laughter, frustration, pride... typical sounds from a family pool Blonde for at least 2 weeks!! hall. Some were there to watch the match, but played at other tables and only checked in once in a while to avoid disrupting the focus of the players. Although the room was full of sounds, it is doubtful that even the loud jukebox was heard by either of them, when it was played. Some viewers watched the match on their computers from Mississippi, Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania... Some of the more dedicated ones stayed throughout the day.

In the middle of the night, at almost 1:00 am, a winner finally prevailed! Josh Smallwood would remain a brunette, while Gene La Viness was to become a blonde for at least 2 weeks!! Congratulations to Josh for a well-deserved win!

Billings MT BCA Sizzling Sammy Strikes Again

The Billings BCA Pool League completed their summer 2010 session with many of the same results as 2009. Bullwackers team 3 went wire to wire in first place much the same as last year. This year things tightened up at the end of the session but Bullwackers hung on the retain the Summer League Championship for another year. Something to be said for continuity as the championship team had the same players as last year. Ryan and Sara Grimm and Doug and Linda Asleson.

Ryan and Linda were the league most valuable players, again leading from wire to wire with Dina Winter and Darrel Frickel as the runner ups in a very close finish.

The summer league consists of mixed teams, 2 men and 2 women, and has just completed its 10th season.

Next year we will do our 11th season.

Fabulous BullShooters Billiards in Phoenix, AZ hosted the 5th stop on the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour on Sept. 25 & 26. This stop offered another severe test for the ladies by featuring 9-Ball on 9-ft. Gold Crown tables.

The eventual winner, Samm Diep (Aurora, CO), wasn’t shooting extremely hot in her first match as she lost that one to Susan “Madhatter” Mello (Scottsdale, AZ) by the score of 7-5. It didn’t take long for Diep’s game to heat up, however, as she proceeded to tear through the loser’s side with wins over Susan Wilbur (Gilbert, AZ), Susan Williams (Chandler, AZ), Salena Holland (Phoenix, AZ), and Edwidge Cavanna (Tucson, AZ); setting up a re-match with Susan Mello who was sent to the final of the loser’s bracket by one very determined Sara Miller (Glendale, AZ).

This repeat match between “Sizzling Sammy” and the “Madhatter” wasn’t to be, however, as Mello was then forced by her job to forfeit out Samm Diep of the tournament and report to work.

The holder of the hot seat was none other than BullShooters’ own, Sara Miller.

Sara earned her perch by taking down Pat Schultz (Peoria, AZ), Barbara “Barracuda” Lee (LaCanada, CA), Ashea Erdahl (Phoenix, AZ), and Susan Mello.

The final match between Miller and Diep was a single race to 9. In this match, “Sammy” continued her run-out ways by jumping out to a 6-1 lead before Sara managed to mount something of a comeback by winning 3 of the next 5 games.

The last of Miller’s hopes were dashed in game 13, however, when she scratched, giving Diep ball-in-hand with the 9-ball hanging in the corner pocket.

This tournament win marked Samm Diep’s second on the AWBT this season, and propelled her to second place in the point standings, right behind leader Susan Williams.

As with all AWBT tournaments this season, raffle tickets for a J. Pechauer custom cue, were sold to anyone present, and the drawing was held just prior to the final match. This particular raffle raised $221 to help support the AWBT, and the lucky winner of the beautiful $620 cue was Roger Long.

The winner of the Second Chance tournament was Susan Williams and she took home $75. Alicia Streenz placed second and won $50 and Jeri Engh (Osceola, WI) placed third and won $20. Thank you to all the ladies that participated in the Second Chance event.

Our “Lucky Loser” this tournament was Pat Schultz. Pat will have free entry into our next event which is October 23-24 at BullShooters. It will be our final event of the 2010 season. Hope to see you there!

BEAT THE GHOST

What’s hot in pool? 10-Ball vs the Ghost. Now, add a unique scoring system and how about a tournament that combines rooms across the nation weekly as well as offer quarterly and annual play-off events?

It’s called the 211 Tour and it is growing with the addition of participants and venues month by month. Played on 9-foot tables, it is a true tournament in the sense that you pay to play and are able to win cash based on your skill level and performance for that week. What’s unique about the tour is you have no opponent during your match and you can play “remotely” in any room that is registered with the tour. No more travel expenses to compete nationally on a weekly basis.

Entry fees and score sheets are tallied and winnings are paid out weekly. Imagine 50 states, 5 locations each state, 10 players in each room what do you think that weekly purse adds up to? I’ll tell you… the payout would run $21,050.00 per week! A wet dream? Maybe, but it’s the goal of the tour and they want you along for the ride.

The “virtual tour” started only a few months ago, but interest in the tour is growing. According to Deby Welfringer, Tour Director, “We’ve got over 70 players in four rooms participating regularly right now: Golden Fleece in Kenmore WA, Malarkey’s in Tacoma WA, Ballad Town in Forest Grove, OR, and Badfish Bar in North Carolina.” Huh? North Carolina? “Yep!” says Deby. “We’re working to get this game in rooms all across the nation and hope to have thousands of players by next year. For example, we’ve got rooms trying to get on board with us in California, Oregon and Idaho.”

The 211 game is a scored match based on the 10-Ball game with an interesting twist: you get ball in hand after the break! You heard right, you place the cue ball anywhere on the table and run out as best you can scoring a point with every ball dropped with bonus points for additional 10 balls pocketed and break and runs. The game is pure offense that requires control, precision and determination. A full match consists of eleven break and run games with a monitored scoring system.

The 211 Tour offers 4 divisions: Pro, Semi-Pro, Handicap and Handicap/Scratch divisions. One exciting division of this tour is the Handicap division because it incorporates a handicap system that is established on your raw scores after the first ten games recorded.

Cue Ball Importance, Part 2

Last month, I talked about the standard specs that cue balls are supposed to be made to, and how those on coin-operated pool tables (“bar boxes”) have historically been manufactured outside of those standards in order to have them return to the head end of the table whenever they wander into pockets.

In that article, I also explained how difficult it can be to control one of those huge and/or overweight suckers.

In fact, one Roger Long particular type is so ridiculously unresponsive that pool players like to call it the “mud ball.”

This month I’m going to talk about the cue balls that are used on free drop tables (8-ft. and 9-ft. tables that are rented by the hour).

As I said in last month’s article, standard cue balls are supposed to be 2-1/4 inches in diameter, and weigh 5-1/2 to 6 ounces, i.e. identical to the object balls. Cue balls made to these specs will contact object balls at an equal horizontal line, which is 1-1/8 inch above the surface of the table. What this does is ensure that the cue ball does not skid the object ball – as it would if the cue ball’s equator is above that of the object ball – or over speed the object ball as can happen with a lower cue ball equator.

And as far as the weight is concerned − equal weights mean equal mass − which means equal reactions between cue ball and object ball. (That’s a good thing, pilgrim.)

Now here’s an interesting thing to ponder: There are at least 8 or 10 different “standard” cue balls on the market. Now there’s an oxymoron for you! How can something be different if it is standard?

Well, most of the differences are in appearance, only. Some are milky white, while others are opaque yellow. One has red dots all over it, while another has absolutely no markings at all. Most, however, will have some sort of logo or other identifying mark of its manufacturer.

And here’s another interesting thing: Even though these “standard” cue balls are all made of the same type of material (phenol resins), and all are made to the same specs; they do not all play exactly the same. And of these “different” standard cue balls, one stands out as the clear favorite among the advanced and professional players.

That one is: the Red Circle. It is so called because of the small red circle its manufacturer places on it to distinguish it from other brands.

Now to my knowledge, no one has ever been able to pinpoint the reason the Red Circle cue ball plays better than all the rest; but most players will definitely agree that it does.

And now here’s some good news for you bar table players: A few years back, Diamond Billiard Mfg. developed a coin-operated table that can use a standard cue ball – a Red Circle, even!

I’ll bet you’re going to go check the cue balls in your favorite pool room now. Aren’t you.

I really don’t like drills either- but are they good for my pool game? YES YES AND YES!!!!

For advice I recommend trying to incorporate all different types of games, drills, total offense, and practice with friends to improve your game. But be aware that if you do practice with friends make sure you try your BEST!!! If you catch yourself just hitting balls without meaning then it’s really not good for your pool game.

When I practice with friends some of them mention, “wow, give me a chance, it looks like your trying to beat me”? Well guess what?

I am trying to beat you!! When I get to the table I feel disciplined enough to try hard every time!! At this point in my career I cannot afford to just have fun and hits meaningless balls. I take pool very serious…. And I think everyone should!! If my friends want to have fun with me then I recommend going to the movies or shopping… now that’s fun.

I don’t like drills, 1-pocket, billiards, 8-ball but the reason I don’t like them is because I am not good at them- But I am honest and I look forward to playing them because one day I will be good at them all. I would like to be known as a great ALL AROUND pool player, not just a good 9-ball player.

I’ve always been told that it takes 21 days to form a habit. If there’s something you want to learn or a behavior you’d like to develop, give it 21 solid days and it should become second nature by then. New information tells us to throw that number out the window. Recent studies by the Medical Research Council indicate the new magic number is 66. Their research has shown that it actually takes us Samm Diep more than three times as long to learn to do something automatically.

According to Professor Jane Wardle, of University College London, “What we found was that it takes 66 days on average for people in our study to acquire a habit.” Though the studies varied between individuals, they were able to determine that if you do something every day for 66 days, in the same situation, it will become automatic.

Also, “performing an action for the first time requires planning, even if plans are formed only moments before the action is performed, and attention. As behaviors are repeated in consistent settings they then begin to proceed more efficiently and with less thought as control of the behavior transfers to cues in the environment that activate an automatic response - a habit.”

What does this mean for pool? Well, depending on what your personal goals are, you may want to consider this information the next time you decide to take the day off from practice.

If you’re a beginner, learning a new shot, or changing your mechanics and you do not have 66 straight days to spare in the pool room, it will now take even longer to learn this game. If you’re only committing 2-3 days a week to your training, it could take in excess of six months before changes become automatic to you.

And who has that kind of time and patience?

If regular practice wasn’t important enough before, we are now reminded of just how detrimental the lack of it can be to our progress. An hour a day keeps the misses away. Even if you only have an hour or less, put in the time and continue to develop that muscle memory.

Here are two trick shots to make the 8 and the 9 in side pocket A. I call them great because unlike some trick shots, there are things to be learned from them that you can use in games.

Also, they are truly amazing when they go, which is most of the time if you have practiced them.

Bob Jewett For the 9 ball shot -- the goal is to make the 9 in pocket A -- both the 9 and the cue ball are frozen to the cushion and to each other. They really need to be frozen or the shot will be either inconsistent or impossible. One technique for encouraging balky balls to stay frozen is to tap them into place with another ball.

If you aim at about the point indicated, which is the edge of the metal fitting for the side pocket on the other side and shoot firmly, the 9 will move relatively slowly down the rail while the cue ball zips across one rail to hit it just as it passes the side pocket.

The main thing to learn from this shot is how adjustments can be used to modify parts of the shot.

The more you shoot into the B C nine ball, the faster it will move down the table relative to the cue ball speed. If the nine ball is short of the side pocket when the cue Side pocket shots ball returns, you need to give it more speed, so you need to shoot into it fuller. Choose an aiming 9 point closer to the middle of the side pocket -- not a lot closer, try Aiming point a half-inch at a time.

A As you take an aiming point to the left or right to get less or more speed on the 9, the path of the cue ball will also change.

3 5 To adjust it to come to the side 6 8 7 2 4 pocket, use a little left or right English to change the angle off the far cushion. With these two controls -- and with careful setup -- you can expect to make the ball over half the time. Remember to hit the ball firmly as it keeps the timing more consistent; the 9 should be moving at a good pace when it’s struck by the cue ball the second time.

The exact distance of the two balls from the side pocket is not too important, but you will have to change the aiming point and English slightly as you move away from the side. The shot can be made with nearly the same line three diamonds from the side.

The shot to make the 8 ball in the side I first saw done by the exhibition player Jack White in the 1960s but it dates back at least 70 years. It’s called The Rosebud. The 8 is on the spot with the 6 and 7 straight across. The other four balls are placed touching the 6 and 7 and lined up with the 6 and 7 to the far corner pockets, B and C. For example, the 5-7 line points to pocket B. The proposition is to make the 8 in any of the four pockets on that end of the table, which you can let the audience pick before you place the cue ball. If pocket A is chosen, place the cue ball as shown in line with the 2-8-5 line, and shoot the 2 straight at the 8. Do you see what happens to let the 8 go in side A? The entire shot is based on tangent lines from ball collisions. The 8 ball last hits the 5 ball -- I’ll leave it for you to figure out where the other balls have gone during the lightningfast sequence of collisions. I’ll also leave it to you to figure out where to put the cue ball for the other three pockets. Have fun.

Cascade Pool League News Cascade Pool League is in its 13th year of BCA pool for upwards of 400 players in Portland, Oregon. After a great 10-week summer 9-ball session, with over 160 players in 10 locations around the area, CPL has moved into its main session of the year, 5-person 8-ball teams. With 9 divisions and 16 locations to date, CPL provides weeknight league play to fit everyone’s needs. Their 8-ball session will run through the fall and winter, ending with their annual Awards Bash in late February. The highlight of this session is a city-wide Interdivisional Playoff, where teams are flighted with their league peers for a 5-week battle to the finish. In CPL’s 8-ball session, every player earns money back based on individual point accrual, and top players and teams are recognized. Any team can reach the top through CPL’s tough handicapping system.

CPL’s host locations provide free pool prior to and during league play.

They also provide means to bring great gifts and giveaways to players at the annual party.

There’s always room for more players in CPL. Signups are now being taken for an in-house session at Classic Billiards on Wednesday night.

Play is on 9-foot tables and the atmosphere is excellent for focus and concentration. It’s all about the game at Classics. Signups are also being taken for Don’s Dugout on Monday night, a friendly bar where play is on 3 Diamond tables and the food is just outstanding. Pinole’s Champions

Diablo Valley Pool League Concord, Calif.

Jim Wheeler owner of Bar None is a long time pool player and loves the competition of the game. He took over ownership of Bar None in Pinole, Ca. five and half years ago. A year ago he connected with the Diablo Valley Pool League to join the highly competitive league by bringing 3 teams from his bar.

Monday nights at 7:30 the bar runs an open 8-ball double elimination tournament with a $10.00 buy in. The winner of each week qualifies in the Tournament of Champions and takes home the prize money for that evening. Once Jim sponsored teams into DVPL the bar began getting players like Jason Williams, Bee Davidson, George Williams and Billy Palmer amongst other participants.

For this men’s Tournament of Champions there were 16 players all competing for the grand prize of a lap top, an a printer ; but as all us pool players know we play for the competition and the bragging rights.

Prizes are great, but to be able to add that we beat someone like a Billy Palmer or Jason Williams is unforgettable.

Prior to the tournament there was lots Aljoe Mandoriao (3rd Place), Billy Plamer (1st Place), of socialization, George Williams (2nd Place) wise cracking, and recollection of other tournaments or fabulous shots. But once Jim asked for everyone’s attention it was game on. Jim gave his welcoming speech and his thanks to everyone for participating.

Everyone thanked him in return because all the prize money goes back to the players each qualifying week and for the final tournament there is no entry fee.

Jim and all the players concur on one thing. The love of the game we call Pool.

The games began and the room was packed but so silent. The wow sounds would come out every once in awhile when a great shot was made or an incredible safe was played. Men started moving to the winners or losers brackets.

Gary Melanson’s game has improved in recent months which led to him knocking out tough opponents such as Feras Quadora and Jason Williams.

By the end of the evening it was between Aljoe Mandoriao, George Williams and Billy Palmer. George claimed the hot seat by beating Billy Palmer after Billy scratched in the side pocket and George ran his remaining balls. Aljoe and Billy played and but as we all know one miss and the other person is out when playing against top notch players.

The final match was between George and Billy. Billy had to beat George twice since he was coming from the losers bracket. The first game Billy won by playing safes and making incredible shots. George tried the same strategy both games but Billy prevailed to win the second game also. The final match was intense.

George played a great safe but if Billy can see a micro fiber of the ball he will figure out how to make it or how to play a great safe back, which is what he did.

Both gentlemen played incredible games and are great representatives in talent and sportsmanship to the game of pool.

Bar None and the Bay Area are fortunate to have great guys playing great pool.

Liz Cole is Queen of the Fleece

By Suzanne Smith On September 18-19, 2010 the NWPA’s 6th Tour Stop of the season was hosted at Askar’s Golden Fleece in Kenmore, WA. The room has some of the toughest equipment in the region, housing 10 9 foot Diamond tables with blue 860 Simonis cloth, so the pockets are super tight and the felt is super fast. The room also has beer and wine available, along with a variety of snacks. We would like to thank Askar and Dave for being such gracious hosts and for supporting the NWPA by hosting their second stop of the 2010 season. The NWPA would also like to welcome new player Sophia Tran from Seattle, WA. Thirty-four ladies came to compete for the $750 added prize fund and Live Streaming was available all weekend through the final match on Sunday. With 34 players, tough equipment, and only 9 tables used for tournament play the loser’s bracket race was reduced to a race to 6 format in hopes of shortening the length of play on Saturday. Match play started promptly at 10 am, but did not conclude until 11 pm that night.

Eight women returned to play in the Main Event on Sunday. On the winner’s side June Maiers vs. Andy Ruth and Jana Montour vs. Mary Hopkin. June and Mary would win their morning matches 7-3 and 7-5 to advance to the hot seat match which June won 7-6. On the B side Jackie Karol vs. Liz Cole and Andrea Saenz-Maes vs. Suzanne Smith. Liz and Andrea both won their matches 6-3, respectively. Liz and Jana would end Andy and Andrea’s tournament tied at 5th/6th with the scores of 6-3 and 6-2 to square off in the next round. Liz also ended Jana’s tournament by a score of 6-3. The last opponent on Liz’s run to the final was Mary Hopkin who after losing a hill-hill grinder against June would also lose a hill-hill battle to Liz. Congrats Mary on your best finish of 2010.

THE FINAL of June Maiers vs. Liz Cole was one Race to 9, alternating break. June’s path to the final: Sue O. (4), Adrianne B. (3), Kit D. (1), Suzanne S. (3), Andy R. (3), Mary H. (6) Liz’s path to the final: Talya M. (3), Loss to Suzanne S. (4), Stacy E. (2), Mikki S. (3), Regene W. (3), Jackie K. (3), Andy R. (3), Jana M. (3), Mary H. (5) Liz won the lag and would break first.

Both players were shooting well coming into the match, but safeties and tight pockets were the key elements dictating play. During the first 6 racks 4 rattled balls mid-run, a missed safety, and a fouled jump shot resulted in the match being tied 3-3. Neither player would concede much of a lead, and the match was tied again at 6 games a piece.

Game 13: Liz broke and made the 8 ball, then ran down to the 5 and rattled it. June came to the table and pocketed the 5 and 6, leaving herself a bank on the 7, which she also pocketed, but left herself a tough cut to the side pocket. June missed the shot and left Liz the opening, which she took. 6-7 Game 14: June broke dry, Liz played safe. June made a good hit and got safe. Liz also made a good hit, but left a bank or safety. June played the bank and the safety leaving Liz kicking off the side rail for a hit, which

she did not get. With ball in hand, June pocketed the 1 and 2, then played a safety on the 3. Liz was unable to get a good hit. Now on 2 fouls, June was in perfect position to tie up the match with a 3rd foul causing loss of game, but instead opted for setting up a long shot on the 3 ball. June rattled the 3 and left the ball sitting in the pocket. In 2008, the first year that Golden Fleece hosted the event, Liz Cole, in addition to tour points and cash prize also received a diamond and sapphire necklace in the shape of a crown. Instead of pocketing the necklace as she could have, Liz decided to start a new tradition for the NWPA. In 2009, when Suzanne Smith won the event, the necklace, along with the title was passed to her. And now in 2010, it has passed back to Liz who started the tradition in the first place. Congratulations Liz, or should we call you Queen of the Fleece?

BCAPL CROWNS SOUTHWE Over Labor Day Weekend at the stunning Radisson Fort McDowell Resort Casino in Scottsdale, Arizona the first BCAPL Southwest Regional Championship kicked off to a very promising start with approximately 250 players.

The inaugural $6,000 added BCAPL regional event was open to both BCAPL and Men’s Open Singles 1st Alex Aroz USAPL league players and non-league current player members. Bad Boys Billiard Productions provided the 40 Diamond 7’ Smart Tables and were the onsite acting tournament directors.

The players participated in the following divisions: beginners coed singles (that was open exclusively to AZ 4-6 rated players only), women’s open singles, men’s open singles, coed advanced / master singles, women’s teams and mixed / men’s teams.

Although the field was mainly from Arizona players traveled from California, Colorado, Idaho, Texas and New Mexico to name a few states represented. In fact Brenda Shilling who won the Women’s Open Singles traveled the farthest, from Minnesota, to play in the event.

In addition to the tournament, 5 time U.S. Open 9-Ball Champion and multi-World Champion Earl “The Pearl” Strickland performed an exhibition and answered questions from the

audience.

Product Review Magic Ball Rack Delta-13 Case by: Don "Cheese" Akerlow I recently had the opportunity to use the Magic Ball Rack first hand and test it against the use of a regular rack. I was pleased and surprised at how well it held the ball, ease of use and that it didn’t have to be taken off of the table before the break. I did have some concerns however and made up a list of questions. Here are my questions and responses about the Magic Ball Rack. Try it out yourself and see what you think. I know you’ll like it.

1) How, when and where did you get interested in the game of pool or billiards? I had always had an interest in cue sports but I was really in my teens where I really caught the bug. I used to go play every Saturday afternoon with a school friend, we were not very good but we enjoyed playing. I started playing 8 ball but after a while progressed to 9 ball, lucky for me that pool started to become very popular in the UK and more players converted to 9ball. That was over 12 years ago now.

2) What inspired you to design a rack and why? I had always found that in pool you could buy a nice production or custom cue, buy good quality balls and even tables. But it was near to impossible to buy a rack that would rack the balls 100% touching everytime. So I thought I could design a rack which would fill this gap in the market and add a level of consistency to the game of billiards.

3) How did you come up with this design when everybody else removes the rack from the table?

I looked at nearly all the other triangles and devices on the market, some were great and some were not so great, but from my study I had identified it doesn’t matter how good or precise the rack is! It’s the cloth, which will make the difference. Eg, Sometimes the 1ball just won’t stick or the wingball just moves slightly when you remove the rack.

So I looked at designing a rack at the cloth level not above the table like all the other predecessors.

I brought a sardo rack many years ago and found that to work quite well, I remembered that it suggested that you tap the table 1st to train the cloth. From this I was able to design Magic Ball Rack, a rack which sits at cloth level and will hold the balls and can be removed after the break.

4) What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Magic Ball Rack? I think the advantages of the Magic Ball Rack are: · Consistent rack every time · Quick and easy to use · Eliminates cloth wear around the racking area · Will give a perfect rack on new and old cloth · No need to tap tables

I think the disadvantages are: · If a ball is rolling very slowly over the rack after the break it could change the angle of the ball. However, this is at very slow speeds. · Sometimes a ball will rest back on top of the rack after the break.

Overall I would say that Magic Ball Rack fixes more problems than it does cause.

5) How long do they typically last? The racks last between 6-9 months of everyday use. The racks are made from a tough grade film which is strong and durable, they will not crack or chip. I would recommend that you do not bend the rack as this can impair the performance of the rack.

Piona Memorial

Vinnie’s Bar N Grill in Concord, Calif hosted the 4th Annual Dave Piona Memorial Tournament on September 19th, 2010. It was yet another great afternoon of seeing familiar faces, excellent shooters, great barbecue offered by Vinnie’s bar and some excellent pool. Dave Piona was not only a dear friend of ours but also did the pool clinics for our participants of the Diablo Valley Pool league. He will always be missed with his great disposition, friendly demeanor, helpful advice and smiling face around Vinnie’s Bar. This was the fourth year the event, and for a beautiful Sunday afternoon, we had a good turnout of 41 players who paid homage to Dave by competing in the double elimination, race to one game on both sides of John Zapata 2nd, Alex Almendral 1st the board.

Players came down from Sacramento and Vacaville/Fairfield areas, up from Daly City, Livermore, and the Greater Bay Area; as well as all over Contra Costa County.

At the end local talent Alex Almendra won the event but not before having to stroke through tough matches against as Dave Gomez, Mike Sano, Ver, Ben Kumli and finally playing John Zapata for the so wanted “Catbird Seat”.

Working his way through the looser side Mike and Ben survived the matches with Jared and Joe securing third and forth spot. At the end Mike would move forward to fight it out with John Zapata for a chance at the catbird seat. Zapata was in rare form and couldn’t miss much, when he finally met Alex for the top price, he took the first game but Alex came back strong on the second game and put the 8-ball down winning the event. Congratulation to our local players it shows that the level of pool out here n Concord is measuring up with other local cities.

We had 36 males and 5 women who joined to try their luck in this high skill level of competition.

Jason Williams the winner from last event didn’t have a good afternoon, and to everyone’s surprise he was out early. He is still one of the best shooters in the area, if not the best.

Cristina Piona, showed up to the event to welcome and thanked everyone for participating in the celebration of Dave’s memory. His daughter Star, Dave’s nephew Randy Piona and Christina’s sister Lorie also paid a visit to Vinnie’s.

Let’s take a minute to thank Vinnie’s manager Jeannie and owner Parker for their support, they added $60 to the pot and provided us with excellent food and the usual great atmosphere.

There aren’t many all women’s qualifiers in the Bay Area but Bar None has one.

Each Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. women gather to compete for the prize money and for the excitement of competing in the Women’s Tournament of Champions.

This is the third women’s tournament sponsored by the bar and owner Jim hopes that it continues to grow. There were 13 women who had qualified and since it was a single game but double elimination no one could predict who would take home the grand prize of the Compaq Lap Top. There were women from Pinole, Concord, Livermore and other local cities. The 1st Tournament of Champions was held last October and was won

by Jess Quinata, the second was won by Kristin Eisen, and the third claimed by Jess again.

Brittany from Livermore was the last woman to qualify for the event and it looked as if she was going to come and win the prize. She defeated everyone she played and took the Hot Seat. She just had to wait and see who would make it to be her final challenger.

Pam DeSoto, Jess Quinata, Would it be Pam De Soto, Jess Ron (tournament director) and Brittany Quinata, Em Santos (Local favorite), or Tammy Moredo.

Em played Tammy for her second loss, Pam sent Tammy out of the tournament and then Jess sent Pam packing. So it was the new comer versus the woman who claimed the first Tournament of Champions Title.

Jess made battled her way back through the losers bracket to face Brittany again. Jess had to beat Brittany twice in order to take the prize home for the second time. The first was played well by both players but Jess’s smooth stroke and defensive play prevailed to take the first game and then the pressure was really on for both.

The final game Jess had the 10 ball which she had to choose between sharp cut, low percentage bank shot, or a safe. Her lessons from many people came thru and she played the safe. Brittany ended up scratching on the next shot and gave Jess ball in hand. She hit her ball in the corner, leaving herself great for the 10 in the side and perfectly for the 8 ball in the lower corner.

Brittany was a great competitor and showed great sportsmanship that evening.

UTAH OPEN ANNOUNCED The Ogden Eagles will be hosting the 2010 Utah Open November 5 - 7, 2010. Play starts off Friday at 6 pm sharp with a 9-Ball open tournament.

Open to 64 players with a $50 entry plus a $15 green fee. The races are to 4 on the winner side, and 3 on the losers side.

Scotch doubles tournament race to 4 on the winners and 3 on the losers, with a 32 team limit. Again with a $50 entry and a $15 green fee.

In the 8-Ball Division: Saturday morning play will start at 8:30 am sharp and the afternoon play will start at 3:30 pm sharp. Women's entry is $40 plus a $15 green fee; Open entry is $60 + $15 green fee; Master's entry is $80 + $20 green fee. This will be a double elimination tournament and you will race to your handicap.

California Pool Players Tour Delbert Wong and his friendly and helpful staff at Family Billiards in San Francisco welcomed the CPPT Sept 25-26 for the fourth stop on the Tour. Delbert has been a staple in the Bay Area for the last 20 years supporting pool players and hosting tournaments in his room, and we are very grateful for his contributions to the sport.

A fairly equal mix of 14 A players and 16 B/C players turned out to compete for a total purse of $2300, Four players from each bracket returned on Sunday for the money round, where the luck of the draw produced all A vs.

Congratulations to Amar Kang for going undefeated and claiming first place.

Kang started off Saturday with wins over Frank Giardano, Colin Mazaika, and Chris McDonald. After the redraw on Sunday, he defeated top B/C finisher Jimmy Qu to meet Deo Alpajora for the hot seat match. On the one loss side, Billy Palmer was busy trying to find a consistent stoke after losing to Delbert Wong on Saturday. Billy churned out wins over E. Joinca, Teymour Ansari, Paul Bramwell and Jaynard Oraque to make it to the Sunday round.

Deo Alpajora had a tad easier road on Saturday, with wins over E. Joinca , Delbert Wong, and road partner Jaynard Oraque to make it to Sunday, where he got matched up with Bret Baker from Medford OR, who made it to the money round for the first time. Alpajora then got derailed by Amar Kang in the hot seat, where he waited for Billy Palmer. But Palmer was too much and Alpajora claimed his familiar third place spot, the same position he has claimed in every CPPT event he has played in this year.

Jimmy Qu went undefeated in the B/C bracket on Saturday with wins over Mike Leahy, Oscar Lopez, and Irish Paul McCaffrey to advance to the money round, where he matched up against Amar Kang and was promptly sent to the left side of the bracket. Qu got by McCaffrey again before succumbing to the onslaught of Billy Palmer. Qu played very well against Palmer, and later said ”I had my chances man, I just didn’t take advantage of them.”

The California Pool Players Tour took its show on the road the weekend of Sept 17-18 and traveled to historic College Billiards in San Diego, California, where owners Pedro Piedrabuena (world champion 3-cushion player) and Timo graciously allowed us to take over their room for two days. These gentlemen should be commended by every person that picks up a cue in the San Diego area – they are truly a class act. Together with Fran Smith, they raised $1500 for the prize fund. The CPPT also added $450 which, combined with entry fees of $1050, created an eye popping $3000 prize fund. Our format pays 25% of the field normally, but to even things out for the money round, we decided to spread the money a little deeper to reward the 18 players that showed up. We were surprised by the low turnout for a tournament with such a large amount of added money, but we later learned that in addition to unfamiliarity with the CPPT, we were up against the APA national qualifiers and the Senior Games being held the same weekend.

Saturday Tournament trails of the 8 who advanced: Louis Ulrich defeated Rydell Rabor 7-1, lost to Tyler Van Wulvan 6-7, defeated Mark Arnold 7-2, Damian Alishan 7-3, Paul Bramwell 7-5. Ben Pham defeated Mark Arnold 7-5, Steve Eakins 7-6, Paul Bramwell 7-6.

Tyler Van Wulvan had a bye, defeated Louis Ulrich 7-6, defeated Ken Johnson 7-3. Ken Johnson had a bye, defeated Damian Paul Bramwell with Louis Ulrich Alishan 7-3, lost to Tyler 4-7, defeated Kevin May 7-4. Shan Damani had a bye, defeated Jason Gilbert 7-0, defeated Fran Smith 7-0. Carlo Cabrarlo had a bye, defeated Pedro 7-2, defeated Marc Barredo 7-5. Pedro had a bye, lost to Carlo 2-7, defeated Max Jansen 7-6, defeated Fran Smith 7-2. Marc Barredo had a bye, defeated Max Jansen 7-4, lost to Carlo Cabrarlo 7-5, defeated Jason Gilbert 7-2.

Eight players returned on Sunday for the money round, and the luck of the draw had the remaining A players in the top half of the bracket and the B/C players in the bottom half of the bracket, a scenario that CPPT founder Vincent Paul Bramwell had been anticipating. Ben Pham and Tyler Van Wulvan matched up in the first round of play, and the pace of their match slowed considerably. At 75 minutes a warning was issued and a 30 second clock was instituted, after Van Wulvan refused to take the default win at the end of the 90 minutes (per tournament rules) when he was ahead 5-4. The shot clock worked in Pham’s favor, however, as he began moving around the table like a man possessed, running out from everywhere to beat Van Wulvan 7-6. Pham later stated that putting him on the shot clock made him stop thinking about missing and just think about making the ball.

Shan Damani defeated Carlo Cabrarlo 7-5 to make it to the hot seat match against Pham, but Pham was on a roll and defeated Damani 7-2. Damani then lost his next match to Louis Ulrich and finished in 3rd place.

unmatched, anywhere, anytime. I felt like I’d stepped back in time, to the era where this stuff really happened, something I’d not seen in my lifetime.

I plugged 25 cents into the phone and dialed Lucky’s number. I had to press my hand over my other ear to hear the phone ringing faintly, and after several rings with no answer I hung up. Well, maybe he was here somewhere.

I scanned the crowd again and thought that might be Lucky over by the jukebox, but was disappointed when it turned out not to be him after all. So, I thought, I’ll watch the action for a while, and if Lucky shows up we’ll have breakfast in the café. A waitress squeezed by and I managed to snag her and order a cup of coffee. I wasn’t counting on getting it.

A clothes rack stepped up to the table, very sharp, took off his leather coat and traded it for a sparkling cue from a brass-cornered oak case presented to him by a handsome but hard-eyed woman. Looked like people were chafing at the bit to play who ever this guy was who was winning. In the meantime, the winner had laid his cue on the table and picked up the money, licking a finger and

... “but, this started three days ago when I played a guy and won all his cash. Instead of leaving, he called out for more money” ....

November Issue: Lucky Part III - “Lucky In The Big Game” counting the bills quickly. Pretty slick, I thought. Wonder who he is? He does not look familiar to me. He was wearing a fancy and very expensive custom suit and wingtip shoes. And wearing his suit jacket while he played. Clean-shaven, short hair, looking neat and very much like he just came from church or a board meeting. I didn’t recognize him as anyone I knew. I wondered if Lucky had already played him. Maybe he beat Lucky. I really needed a better look at this guy, so I made a move through the crowd to a spot nearer the end of the table.

I could not think of any player who could beat the Lucky I had played that night, and I was determined to get a closer look at this guy and see what he was about.

He turned slightly, someone opened the front door, and in the streaming, smoky light beams I could finally make out his face. Now, I thought, maybe I had seen him before. But who, where? My fatigue and the smoke made my head hurt and my squinting dry eyes burn. Ah, bag this, I thought. I’m going to get something to eat and grab some sleep.

Then, in one of those frozen moments of time, when all the fragmented pieces of memory and reality come together, the realization of who this man was rushed through me. It was… I mean, it wasn’t, but it was … the same face, or at least the same under the face, I mean. Grab a hold, I thought. I couldn’t believe it, I was caught so off guard. I closed my eyes and literally shook my head to clear it. Wow! That’s Lucky! What the…?

So now what? I had come here planning to buy my friend breakfast and shoot the breeze in the peace and quiet of this quaint place, and hopefully find out how I could help him with his … problems. That picture was fading fast.

The picture before me was electric with question marks and unknowns. What had happened to Lucky to bring him to this, all that he abhorred and abandoned years ago? I could only stand here, suspended in the crowd, and watch, and wait, and wonder, what’s next?

Ulrich stated after the tournament that he was pleased with the tournament and its unique format, and he believes that as word spreads among the San Diego players, we’ll see a tremendous turnout for the On Cue tournament Nov 6-7 in La Mesa.

“This is what this format is all about,” said Vincent Paul Bramwell, “It gives the B and C players the opportunity to play each other and gain some confidence before facing off against the top guns, and even if they lose they get to still make a nice payday and get the benefit of the experience playing the better players and hopefully learn something, it’s a win-win for everyone. “ The feedback from everyone that showed up to play at College was very positive.

They didn’t really understand at first how the format would really work, but after seeing it in action they are convinced that it is definitely a winner and that all the B/C players can most definitely benefit from it. Quite a few spectators came to watch, and all the players in the Sunday bracket stuck around until the very end.

Without knowing who or what to expect, the San Diego pool community welcomed us and embraced the Tour and unique format of play, they had a ball and made some money, and we made many new friends. Many thanks to Pedro and Timo for their kindness and generosity. They have invited us back next year, and we look forward to returning to College Billiards.

Now that the area players have seen the product and earnings potential, we expect a better turnout for the next event at On Cue billiards on Nov 6-7. We’re calling out all Southern California players to make this a success so we can bring a full series of tour stops to Southern California in 2011. If you show your support we will support you. Our goal is to have a combined championship event with the S. Cal players and the N. Cal players, which would be very exciting to watch and compete in.

If neither of the men had won 7 games (or the women five games) by the conclusion of the final game of 9-Ball the players automatically switched to 8-Ball until one or the other reached their needed game total.

If 8-Ball was the first game category chosen then the men had to play five games of 8 ball where as the women played three, then the switch to 9-Ball was made until one or the other reached the required number of games won. The competition began at following registration and the players meeting. For the most part, once the actual play got underway everything sort of started progressing nicely.
