The credit must go to Craig Arnold, tournament director and his staff (Renee Moss, Julie Burney, Georgia Cassle, Kit Dennis, Andrea Saenz-Maes, Felisa Delon, Jean Bartholomew, Susan Statler) and referees (Cecil Pickett, Ted Woodward, Steve Peterson, Andrew Monstis, Larry Maes, Paul Marquez, Paul Kirkland, Martha Hartsell, Kelly Reynolds, Pat Mowdy), as well as the sportsmanship of the players. On October 11, 2001 in Baltimore, Maryland at the ESPN Zone, Mike Massey defended his 2000 title of the ESPN Trick Shot Magic Championship and won again against an international field of competitors, earning a $25,000 paycheck in the process. (See more details at www.mikemassey.com provided by Westar International). The players went into each match cold, not knowing what shot their Mike & Francine Massey opponent was going to present them with. One player presents his shot and the other has to duplicate it. The matches required each player to execute six skill shots and six artistic shots in a challenge format. Mike Massey said, It s like horses in basketball or match play in golf. It s a true test of skill. It s fair competition because the shots are the same. I love it. Yes, there was a book of 50 or so shots that each player had to choose from, but they had to use only four from the book. The rest could come from their imaginations in order to confound their opponents in a moment s notice. (Continued on page 11)

Deuel Sudden Death 7-Ball Champion
The 2001 ESPN ZONE BILLIARDS SHOOTOUT was held October 10-11 in Baltimore. Corey Deuel defeated Ralf Souquet for the SUDDEN DEATH 7-BALL crown and Mike Massey bested Stefano Pelinga for the TRICK SHOT MAGIC title. ESPN Zone was host to two international fields, both playing for $40,000 total purse (no entry fee) and $25,000 first place prize money in each event. SUDDEN DEATH 7-BALL and TRICK SHOT MAGIC were both taped for three 1-hour telecasts on ESPN beginning in December. SUDDEN DEATH 7-BALL was the first tournament, played on October 10, and drew an international lineup battling for the $25,000 first prize. The action in 7-Ball is fast and furious (the speed of light compared to 9-Ball) with two sets, race to five games each set, and a sudden death single game deciding ties.
Deuel and Souquet emerged from the pack as the top guns. In the Championship Match Deuel overcame Souquet by scores of 5-3 and 5-4 to capture the title and the money. Souquet, who otherwise played flawlessly during the tournament, took home $5,000 for second place. In semifinal action, Deuel edged out Alex Pagulayan in a onegame sudden death after splitting sets 5-1 and 5-1. The other semifinal saw Souquet break past Troy Frank in straight sets 5-4 and 5-2. World class players who were knocked out in single elimination included World Champion Mika Immonen (Finland), Fong-Pang Chao (2001 Champion of Champions), Earl Strickland (Player of the Year), Alex Pagulayan (Canadian 9-Ball champion), Charlie Williams (USA) and Troy Frank (USA).

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 10-14-2001 The American Cuemaker s Association issues a Challenge to the Billiard World. The American Cuemaker s Association is issuing a challenge to the Billiards World. Mr. Barry Behrman and his staff have been promoting the U.S. Open Tournament for over 25 years. While he doesn t get rich from this event, he has continued to promote it year after year. During some of the dry years , this event was one of the only venues players had. This year s U.S. Open was scheduled on the heels of the September 11th Tragedy. Mr. Behrman was ready to cancel the event, but the players wanted it to continue. This caused Mr. Behrman to lose a substantial amount of money since there was virtually no spectator revenue. This came on the heels of another major financial loss suffered by Mr. Behrman at the Masters tournament. This was a new tournament, and the promotion of new events usually lose money, but when it is followed by a financial disaster such as the U.S. Open, the future of these events become uncertain. The American Cuemaker s Association feels that The US Open has been the most prestigious event in our sport for over 25 years, it must continue. On behalf of all of its members, The American Cuemaker s Association has donated $5,000 in an effort to save the US Open 9 Ball Championship. In addition to this immediate relief, the American Cuemaker s Association has challenged all it s members to donate a cue, a case, or any product our members produce or sell. Mr. Behrman has agreed that all proceeds from the sale of these products will go into a separate account for the U.S. Open. The American C u e m a k e r s Association is also challenging all other members of the Billiards industry and pool enthusiasts to follow our example and donate money and/or product to save this important event. Any and all donations 125 West Pine St to this fund will be Okanogan, Washington posted on the American Cuemaker s Association s website for all to see (unless the donor wishes to PEN ALL remain anonymous).

The Midwest Classic started on Oct. 11th and finished on Oct. 14th. The Pro Am Charity Event kicked off the festivities Oct.10th at the beautiful Palace Billiards in Villa Park Illinois. Owners John Abruzzo and Steve Hopper pulled out all the stops for this WPBA Tournament, including buying new Brunswick Gold Crown Fours that they are keeping for the billiard room. The women played on six gold crowns for the main event and then installed a gorgeous 9 foot Montebello table by Brunswick. Rob Sheets V.P. of sales for Brunswick was present for the semifinals and finals on Sunday. Also present was Renee Poehlman from the Sardo Tight Rack. Attending this tournament was Billiard Congress

Jones Captures First Rack em B & Under Tournament

Dave Smith, owner of Rack em Billiards in Medford, OR wanted to hold a tournament that would be fun for everyone and give local players of all abilities the opportunity to experience the thrill of winning a tournament match. On October 13th & 14th, he held the first in a series of six B and under tournaments. The tournament was well attended as he drew a field of 45 players. Play was 9-ball, race to 5, double elimination with a free $100 tournament on Sunday for anyone losing their first two matches in the main draw. Play began after auctioning off each of the players in a separate pot to which the house added $50. By 7:00 pm, Saturday the tournament was down to the final six players who were all guaranteed money on Sunday. The winner s bracket consisted of Mike Jones, Butch Barrett, Bret Baker, and Laurie Kinney. On the one-loss side, Mark Fenn and Frank McLean waited to see who their next opponents would be. Play resumed on Sunday at 1:00 with the six players in the main draw and 10 players in the consolation tournament which was double elimination, race to 3. On the winner s side, Mike Jones defeated Butch Barrett and Bret Baker defeated Laurie Kinney. Mike then defeated Bret to win the hot seat and wait to see which player would survive the one-loss side to play him in the finals. On the left side of the tournament board, Butch defeated Frank, and Laurie continued her determined play and sent Mark home. Bret then outlasted Butch in an up and down, seesaw match that came down to the wire. In the finals, Bret had to defeat Mike twice, which would be a tough go, as no one had defeated him yet. Bret was able to win the first set, but then Mike kicked his game into high gear and took home the title! The second tournament in this series is scheduled for November 17th & 18th. Everyone had such a good time at this tournament, I m sure the next tournament will be even more successful! Karen Corr was born November 10, 1969 in Ballymoney, Northern Ireland. At the age of 8 Karen moved to England but didn t start playing snooker until the age of 14. One year after that, at 15, she won her first ladies snooker championship. One day after her 21st birthday, in 1990, she gave herself a birthday present by winning her first world snooker championship, also repeating in 1991, as well as 95 and 97. In 1998, in the off season for snooker, she wanted to see how she could do playing pool. She won 10 qualifying events in a row which made her eligible for WPBA events. Karen and her friend, Julie Kelly (another touring pro) moved to the U.S. and lived with one of Julie s sisters in Boston, before moving to northeast Philadelphia. Most afternoons you can find Karen at Pete Fusco s place in Feasterville, PA practicing for the next tournament. Corr has now won five WPBA titles in 2001. Karen defeated the Dutchess of Doom , Allison Fisher 7-5 in the finals of the Midwest WPBA Classic Tour event, at Palace Billiards in Villa Park, Illinois. Allison sent Karen, who is now the #1 player in the world, to the one loss side beating her 7-4 in the winners bracket finals. It s the third straight tournament that Fisher has done this. Karen met Gerda Hofstatter in the finals of the one loss side and defeated her. This set up the rematch. Here is a shot you can have a lot of fun with and amaze your friends. Depending on your current level of skill this shot may be very easy for you or quite difficult. Place the cue ball, (BALL A) under the rack so the front is raised up in the air and not touching the table. Now shoot the dark ball, (usually the one ball) into the second diamond using top right english. Shoot this shot with a moderate stroke. The one ball will rebound off of three cushions and knock the cue ball out of the way. The rack will fall into its proper place and you will have all fifteen balls racked up. Depending on the condition of the rails and cloth, you may need to hit higher or lower from the second diamond. A few test shots may be required to learn the rails and how they react. Have fun with this one.

On Saturday, October 13th, the Twin Falls Idaho Magic Valley Men s Pool League held a benefit 8-ball tournament. The tournament entry fees plus raffle proceeds from 2 donated cues generated $946 for the American Red Cross Liberty Fund. A great time was had by all twenty-five randomly paired doubles teams. The league would like to thank The Pocket in Twin Falls for hosting the tournament along with donating a very nice Lucasi cue for the raffle.

Hegge Wins at Shorthorn & Club Tournament
I remember how I laughed the first time I saw that on my poolplayer buddy s tee shirt back when I was still a novitiate to the fields of green; back when pool was just a recreational pastime; before I understood it is as infinite as time and space, bound only by table time. Before I discovered it is a green door to a community, to a gathering of some of the most unique individuals I have encountered in a lifetime filled with many really unique individuals. The game of pool (I cringe saying that) has some interesting side effects. Talent, or lack of; ego, or abundance of; attitude, even or odd; these things tend to level the field of acceptance. Think about it. Look at the behaviors, attitudes and even personalities that are tolerated regularly within our game environment that would (and often do) otherwise create social loners. The world of green the world of endless challenge where we are really only competing against our own ability to do that which we know and feel. The world where we expose our whole psyche on the felt each time we shoot. The world where we acknowledge and applaud the beauty and finesse of someone s game regardless of the someone. The Great Common Endeavor. Recently, this amazing commonality of community was brought home to me. My best friend, my beacon light into the unknown world of greens, my buddy who often exclaimed how great the pool community is, died. Gathered to celebrate him were 200 of his community . Friends, many of whom like me had gotten to know him on and around the felt. Unique people who would otherwise probably never gather together, bound initially by the love of the game, missing a small piece of the whole. These ties that bind are round rolling orbs that spin into our hearts and minds. Truly, marbles IS just a game.

The tournament hosted by the Shorthorn Tavern in Omak, WA and the Club Tavern in Okanogan, WA on October 6th and 7th attracted players from all over the Pacific Northwest. We want to thank the 55 participants whose homes ranged from Portland, OR to Vancouver B.C. and inland over to Idaho. It was an excellent turn out for a fun and exciting weekend. Pete Cue Ball Quande hosted 28 players from Washington, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia for the 20th Annual Montana State 9Ball Open. At stake was over $2,000 purse and $800 in the calcutta. Calgary s Rob McDonald walked away with the $800 first prize. He sent the legendary Cole Dixon currently of Billings, Montana to the B side, then beat him again for the cheese. Harold Prine of Spokane finished a strong third, while Kevin Osborne, of Calgary took fourth. Twenty year old Nick Kruger, also of Calgary, tied Terry Johnson of Kalispell for fifth and sixth. Missoula s Bob Grey and Jim Winter of Billings got seventh and eighth. Enroute to first, McDonald beat Casey DeYoung, Rob Hamilton, Lee Lang, Cole Dixon, Harold Prine, and Dixon again. Dixon dealt with James Mason, Shannon Gibson, and Kevin Osborne, before Rob put him on the B side. Cole then defeated Terry Johnston, Kevin Osborne again, and Harold Prine, before the final loss to the consistent Canadian. Spectators and players enjoyed spirited competition and great food and beverages available at Cue Ball s. Pete thanks all the players and fans, especially those traveling so far. Image Have you noticed where the image of the pool player has been and is now going? Or whether or not the image has made any changes at all? In case you haven t noticed then it s time you look, and while you re at it take a look at yourself too! The older image of the pool player paints a rather tainted picture. Although most of the champions were men of integrity, the next level players were that of a hustler s, thieves, con man, and others, giving out a bad image to the aura of pool. The poolroom was a dark, quiet, mystical type of place. It was an action place. Things happened there! It was both an exciting and scary place to be. Nobody ever told another person not to gamble with someone. This was an unwritten rule! He didn t know whom to trust, so you didn t trust anyone! There were con men everywhere waiting for their opportunities, ready to pounce on the unwary, eager for a chance to fleece their opponent and take every cent he had! It was a time of confusion. The Vietnam War was going on. We had the lottery system in effect, drafting men into the military left and right! We were all afraid we d be drafted, go overseas, and die for a cause we knew nothing about! Pool, drugs, and everything else was heavy on the scene during that time. We wanted to experience all that we could! Fear of being drafted and dying was a driving force. Everyone gambled! Hustlers and con man made large sums of money lying, cheating, dumping stake horses, and so on. It was greed that checked many good players out of the championship level. Money was their friend. It came fast and was easy to make! I m not saying, don t gamble. Gambling is one of the greatest ways to test your ability under pressure. It also increases and creates the need for the player to improve at an accelerated rate. Clearly, gambling is essential to pool. Image is also important. The gambling image of the past needs to become more dignified in order to insure the future growth and development of this sport. As executives all over the world are beginning to enjoy this sport more and more, we need to take on their style of attitude towards pool. They gamble large sums of money in order to produce the same kind of pressure a tournament would provide. In other words, the executive crowd is using the gambling as a tool to improve, rather than win the money. The money is just a way of keeping
score. Evolution is inevitable. To evolve is to change. Pool is evolving from the hustler era into the player era and yet, still needs your help. Today s billiard rooms are much different than those of the past. They now have beautiful bright colored carpets, track lighting , vivid wall colors being spotlighted with soft lights, state-of-the-art music systems, and generally an atmosphere much like the disco s of the 70s. Gambling rarely exists anymore. The action seems to be headed in the direction of tournament play, and with the tournaments, notoriety. The tournament winners are in the spotlight, being closely examined and scrutinized by the public. The public is looking for reason why they would, or would not enjoyed taking this game up as a recreational sport. Most tournament winners, aware of this experience, rise to the occasion, de-light the public and give pool a big nudge in the correct direction. Yet, the old hustler image hasn t totally left the game yet. Some players are going tournaments conducting themselves with the old hustler image, crying, complaining, sharking, and generally doing whatever it takes to win. And when they can t win gambling, some of these people aren t even paying off. It s no wonder the public hasn t let go of this less desirable image. These players desperately need to know the public eye is on them, ready and eager to judge their actions! Are they so unaware of their actions? Is this the image we want to present? And what about the rest of us? This problem is partly our fault too. After all, we do allow this crap to continue. Maybe, we could all try keeping each other in check from now on. It s time for every player, no matter what level, to begin conducting themselves in a professional manner. To be a champion is to compete with champions. You need to look like a champion, walk like a champion, talk like a champion, pack like a champion and respect others like a true professional. We need to lift the spirit of lesser players and encourage them to continue in their improvements. We need to promote pool as a fun game to play, no matter what level of player a person is. This is the image we seek. It takes a combined effort of all players, at all skill levels. Remember, you can be at the top of the heap, you can be at the bottom of the heap, or you can be in the middle of the heap. You re still part of the heap. It s a lot more fun to play a bad player with a good attitude, than a good player with a bad attitude. It s a more enjoyable experience to play a good player with a good attitude. You ll get a lot more games if your opponent feels honored to play you. Keep a good attitude. Represent the game with respect to your fellow players. Be a champion!

safeties were right on target, and she was capitalizing on every opportunity that was given to her (or that she created for herself). During those first games, it seemed that Sarah was never going to get a chance at an open shot. But anyone who knows Sarah knows that she doesn t give up easily. Sarah took 2 of the next four games, which left the score at 6-2 in Kim s favor. And then Sarah showed everyone in that room why she had earned her spot in the finals. She won the next 3 games by turning the tables and playing terrific safeties back on Kim, creating opportunities for her to get open shots and run the tables out. With the score standing at 6-5 in Kim s favor, everyone started thinking that this was going to end up a real shoot-out, possibly even one of those hill-hill matches that grind both players down until only one is left standing. But Kim Shaw had other plans. She quickly won the next three games, cutting Sarah s comeback effort short, and earning herself the title of 2001 WPBA Amateur National Champion. Congratulations to both Kim and Sarah for an excellent tournament!! As for me, I could make all sorts of excuses as to why I didn t win the tournament. I cut my foot at the airport so my right heel hurt all weekend, I got stung on the arm by a bee before my second round match, and I almost missed a match due to a misunderstanding of when my match time was .but here is the truth plain and simple. The two players I lost to, Melanie Koger and Jeannie Seaver, both played better than I did in those matches. It is that simple. And I congratulate them as well for their strong finishes in this extremely tough event. And once again, I would like to take a moment to salute each and every girl who played in the event. It took a lot of strength and courage to travel in the face of such devastation and to stand up and prove that it s hard to keep a good girl down!!!!

Spokane, Washington On October 20th & 21st, McQ s Billiards held an open Mixed Scotch Doubles 8-Ball tournament. Twenty-four teams came to play the race to 5 mixed format. And fun was had by all. We managed to finish the event on saturday, but it took all day to do it. But in the end the team of T.J. Frank and Amber Johnson defeated James Hevener and Kathi Fornay for the win. Portland, Oregon On October 20th & 21st Cue s Billiard Club held a B and below tournament. There were 35 entries and everyone had a great time. Fred Bon placed 4th after a 7-5 loss to Mike Patterson. Mike worked his way through the losers bracket by beating Fred Bon to face Creigh Dumo whom he beat 7-3 giving Creigh 3rd. Jeremy Nelson walked all over Creig who was considered the favorite to win (7-3). In the final match Jeremy and Mike fought it out all the way. They tied at 3, then at 5, again at 6, the match then went to 7-6 then 8-6, and then 8-7. In the final game Mike broke and didn t make a ball, then Jeremy ran out for the win 9-7. A mini tournament with 12 players was also held. In the final match he defeated Stepano Pelinga (Italy) 12-5, who, coming in second, won $5,000 for his efforts In the semi-final action, Massey prevailed over Paul Gerni 12-5. The other semifinal saw Pelinga slip past Sebastian Giumelli 11-9 in a tight match. International trick shot stars who were bumped off in single elimination included Charles Darling (2001 World Champion), Paul Gerni (WTSA Champion), Herbert Friedemann (German Champion), Bogdan Wolkowski (Poland Champion), Wen-Hung Fang (Taiwan Champion), and Sebastian Giumelli (Argentina Champion). The winner s checks were presented by ESPN Zone and Olhausen Billiards. Also, Viking Cues presented a one-of-a-kind cue to each of the champions. In addition to the fine tournament site at ESPN Zone, the event was sponsored by Viking Cues, Olhausen Billiards, Aramith Super Pro Balls, Sardo Tight Rack, Simonis Cloth, Silver Cup Chalk and Mikharl Darafeev. The WPA sanctioned event was produced by Matt and Bettiane Braun of Billiards International, Ltd.

Master Singles, Women s Master Singles, Men s Open Singles, Women s Open Singles, Open/ Men s Teams, and Women s Teams had a total purse of over $30,000. A total of 534 entries would be competing for the prize money in each of the divisions. First place in any one of these events could range from $500 to over $2,000. The tournament was held at the Chinook Winds Casino, a beautiful, picturesque, setting on the ocean. As you drive down the hill heading west to the ocean, the casino stands boldly and proudly. I had the distinct privilege of meeting many great pool players and had the opportunity to watch many fantastic matches from both the masters division as well as the open, the men s play to the women s play. These were extraordinarily talented pool players coming from both Oregon and Washington, established from a BCA league. The weather was not conducive to doing anything (except for Sunday) but play pool. The casino was very much Vegas style , plenty of action and plenty of money to be won. One lady

But, the real action was on the tables between the over 500 entrants in the eight different divisions. But, the couple that stood out most was celebrating their 10 th Anniversary by coming here and playing pool. That is love of the game and love of each other. Congratulations Aaron and Renee Moss of Allyn, Washington. (see photo front page) The tournament started on Wednesday with Scotch Doubles, both Masters and Open Divisions, concluding that evening. On Thursday and Friday there was the singles events, Men s Masters, Men s Open, Women s Masters and Women s Open. They concluded on Saturday way into the wee hours of the morning, play ended at 3 AM. Team play started on Saturday and concluded on Sunday. This was a combination of Men s/Open Team and Women s Team, three person teams vying for the top prize. Women s Open Singles and Paul was a member of the winning Open/Men s Team. Kevin Kaehler a member of the winning Open/Men s Team also won the Men s Open Division. The champions of the other divisions were: Kris Iverson, Men s Master Division, Becky Mowdy, Women s Master Division, Steve Graham and Sabrina Henson, Open Scotch Doubles Division. The women s and men s teams virtually completed their championship matches at the same time, around 11 PM Sunday. The winning men s team was Good Shot Dummies , with Paul Marquez, Kevin Kaehler and Chris Gattman and the winning women s team was Noti Heartbreakers , with Martha Hartsell, Bonita Mahaffey and Sharon Blackwell. Both teams won very close matches. All the players deserve congratulations for a battle well fought, with respect and dignity for each other that was shown throughout the entire tournament. BCA League & Program Department Offers Air Travel Tips for Your Cue & Case from: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development
We are all aware of the terrorist attacks of September 11th and the heightened level of security at all airports around the world. The FAA has announced that no objects that could be used as a weapon will be allowed as carry-on baggage THIS INCLUDES CUE STICKS. In an effort to minimize inconvenience to players flying to billiard events, the BCA suggests you consider the following luggage check-in alternatives for your cue and case: a). Bubble wrap your case with cue(s) enclosed and obtain an airline s plastic bag at check-in. The bag is heavy-duty and is tied, so that there is little chance of damage to the case in transit. b). Bubble-wrap your case with cue(s) enclosed and pack in a box that you can check through as luggage. Businesses such as Mailboxes, etc. are experts at boxing such items in advance. c). Special cue cases are available from some retailers that have a cushioned interior and metal/aluminum exterior, making them immune to damage in luggage handling. d). Check in your case as luggage (see above), but pack your bubble-wrapped cue separately in your clothing luggage. e). Ship your bubble-wrapped/boxed case with cue(s) enclosed via UPS, etc., to your destination in advance. Many people have always been somewhat anxious about air travel and the recent events have made all of us more so. The BCA staff understands this, but we also feel that it s best for everyone to move forward with plans, including tournaments that involve air travel. Air travel is still and will always be the most secure form of travel and the BCA truly hopes that the incidents of September 11th do not deter you from participating in events that you so enjoy and deserve.

The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) is pleased to announce that over forty rooms throughout the United States and Canada will host a Billiards for America event on Saturday, November 10, 2001 with more locations registering everyday. In a recent development, Olhausen Billiard Manufacturing, Inc. of Poway, California, announced that it will be donating an 8-foot Oak Augusta table in American Walnut Finish with Spruce cloth with a retail value of $3,395. All Billiards for America event participants, spectators and organizers will be eligible to enter the contest. Stephen Ducoff, executive director of the BCA, states that the Billiard Congress of America would like to thank Olhausen and all of the room owners for their outstanding support of this industry-wide effort to generate funds for the relief efforts and give billiard enthusiasts in North America the opportunity to make a contribution through the sport we love. Helping to promote and coordinate the event are the American Poolplayers Association (APA) and the Women s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA). Money generated by Billiards for America will be donated by each event site directly to relief funds established in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the American people. An updated list of event locations is listed on the Play page of the BCA web site (www.bca-pool.com/play/ ). All event sites will be sent Official Grand Prize Sweepstakes entry forms that they will mail to the BCA after the event for the Grand Prize Drawing on Wednesday, November 21, 2001. Billiard rooms and league operators throughout North
America have been asked to organize and host pool tournaments or other fund-raising events on this day, while billiard retailers and manufacturers are encouraged to support the tournaments with monetary and product donations for prizes, raffles and silent auctions. Billiard retailers are also being asked to collect donations from their customers. The WPBA is encouraging its members to participate in or make an appearance at an event. Proceeds from the tournaments will be donated directly to relief funds such as The American Red Cross, the New York Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund, The United Way and The Salvation Army. Each host site, as well as retailers, have received BCA-produced posters to advertise the event as well as tournament charts, a certificate of appreciation and tournament guidelines. All host sites will be listed on the BCA, APA and WPBA web sites. Retailers and manufacturers should contact local host sites and support the tournaments with prize money or product donations. Players should not only contact their favorite room for tournament details, but also to invite their friends and family to participate, regardless of skill level. All billiard rooms in the United States and Canada are encouraged to participate by hosting a Billiards for America tournament. BCA-member rooms have received a tournament packet. CHALLENGE POOL THE NEW GAME ! Challenge made its U.S. debut at the B.C.A. in Las Vegas in July of this year. It became the talking point of the show very quickly, because of its unusual shape, people saying hey have you seen that new table? The hourglass table? Take a look at it. From the beginning we were very busy with clients from all over the world. Coming just to have a look at this new form of pool, playing it once or twice going away but coming back and back again to play more, when we went for a ten minute coffee break, we came back to find the people who had only played a few games of Challenge, had already organized there own tournament. WINNER STAYS ON. My demonstrators Julie Kelly the two thousand Lady s World Champion and the current Belgian eight ball champion Tony Mc Callum fought hard to get back control of the table. It just let you see said Tony, this game is a great leveler. People at the B.C.A. who played said the game is awesome, great fun but also this is a serious game. Its great we girls can take on our guys now NOT SO MANY LONG SHOTS . Charles Correll who recently opened a new billiards store in Gladstone Illinois was so impressed that he brought other people to see Challenge pool. At the end of the show I made Charles an offer, because he in my opinion is a guy that loves his game of pool and with his retirement pension and savings wants to give other people the right goods at the right price. Charles has the first nine feet Challenge pool table in the whole of the world; needless to say he is astounded. WHAT A GUY! Challenge pool. Readers you know when we go into a pool hall or a bar we get this feeling. THIS IS MY NIGHT. RACK EM UP I M READY. Me I go trough the same routine, my adrenaline running at the rate of liters per minute. I take my
cue out of its battered case order the table get my beer. My friends and I start talking pool, it comes to the time when we toss the coin the game is eight ball tonight, I win the toss, you to break Alistair, so I break off. I do my best but there is always, always this stupid ball that gives me heartache, it s happened again. My friend and opponent who is of course a better player than me comes to the table leaves me sitting there watching him clearing up the balls, thinking to myself what might have been! At the end of the night the adrenaline back to being subdued. The expectation long exhausted, the frustration of defeat getting higher knowing that I should have done better. And I joke I took a packet off cigarettes squeezed it in the middle and thought hey what a shape for a table . Within a couple of seconds I had the idea. Then after a few months of getting the angles right on an old pool table, I asked my friends to try this game, they all loved it! I even won some games, the verdict was unanimous, this game is addictive lets play again. The next morning it was off to the patent office directly. I am someway down the road now and getting there. O.K. I used to own my house, had a nice car but to me the game means so much to see players really enjoying this new game. I went for it! Karen Corr the ladies number one in the world at this moment launched Challenge for me in Scotland. Her comments were and are, great game, success Alistair . All the professional players who have played, say the same this is different, Julie Kelly said; when are we getting these tables in the U.S.? Readers at this moment I have a good manufacturer in Belgium who can export but I am looking for a partner in the U.S. to join with the production and promotion of this new cue sport Challenge Pool. Jim Trenary Responds to Boomer First of all I would like to say that I wished Boomer s letter to this newspaper had not been printed. It was. While I don t understand Boomer s decision not to share her teams successes with any publication that is willing to print it, I respect her right not to. Unfortunately the only people that lose are the players. More troubling to me was why Boomer felt it necessary to bring my name into her disagreement with Cheese. I have never had an affiliation with any newspaper other then as a reader and an advertiser. That being said, She has made some very serious, false and damaging allegations against me personally. What she stated has harmed my reputation. For those of you who don t know me, I am a business owner. I own several retail gas stations, a Tobacco store, Hair Salon and a Tanker Truck business. Contrary to Boomers allegation, my Pool League
(Evergreen Division, Inc.) has never made a profit. All of the Oregon TAP players weekly fees have either gone back to them in Cash prizes, trophies or towards direct costs of running a statewide pool league. Its not that I am opposed to someone making a profit from their hard labors it is just not the reason why I started this Pool league. There is no secret that I do not find that APA is a league that I wish to shoot in. I quit the APA league in Salem before I even heard of TAP. While APA does offer up a big dollar tournament at the end of each year, if you add up the money paid by the APA players each year (over $42,000,000) it is not that big of a pay out. That doesn t even count the membership money. The APA operators keep most of this money, but as a collective group the players are not getting a very good deal. When you count a slop shot with the same weight as a skill shot, you cannot have an accurate handicapping system. In

my opinion APA operators have too much control of the handicapping system. Politics and the competition between APA operators has an undue impact and perhaps misleading effect on an individuals handicap. Don t confuse my dislike of APA with an attack on Merle and Boomer. I believe they do a decent job as league operators. There is no doubt in my mind that Boomer likes her players and wants the best for all of them. It s their product that is flawed. I would rather see players shooting in an APA league then not shooting in any league at all. All pool leagues help players become better shooters and the friendships that can be developed is well worth the 5 or 6 bucks a week. The 1st major 4-Division Titleholders (With all Teams having already qualified for an Annual $5,000, State Tournament), squared off at Q z FAMILY RESTAURANT on Sept.8th & 9th, 2001). The new pool league was formed in Dec. of 1998 in the Federal Way, WA area, the Washington State Pool League (W.S.P.L.). Founded by Gary E. Smith, the league now has (5) Divisions. The Divisions are kept small, at only (8) TEAMS. This is being done so the original Charter Members can have the best chance of qualifying for the W.S.P.L State Tournament held in February of each year. The 1st (3) TEAMS who place in points, in a (16) week session automatically make the Playoffs. Then a Wild Card is drawn from the 4th-8th place teams (50% of ALL TEAMS make it to the PLAYOFFS). Washington State Artistic Championship
On Oct. 6 & 7 Harvey s Billiards hosted the first Annual Washington State Amateur Artist Pool Championship. This was a trick shot competition that involved 18 different shots. Artist pool is

broken down into eight disciplines and each participant executed three shots in six different disciplines. The two disciplines that were eliminated were jump and masse. Each competitor shot all 18 artist shots and they were given three chances to make each shot. Degrees of difficulty are assigned to each shot. You receive full value of the shot if you make the shot on your first attempt. If you make it on your second attempt you receive one point less and two points lee if you make it on your third attempt. There were 41 people that purchased the Shot/Challenge Program to learn the required shots. On Saturday the 6th twelve brave people, of which two were women, executed twelve of the eighteen artist shots that day. On Sunday they returned and executed the last six shots of the program. There was only one who had a lead after the first day. Everyone else was within a few points of each other and first place was not secure. It was very exciting to see who would capture first through sixth. Each artistic shot meant a lot to the competitors. cue raffle was held for the American Red Cross Northwest Response Fund (for the September 11, 2001 tragedy.) Many people bought tickets for the beautiful custom cues. A total of $545.00 was taken in and donated to this worthy cause. I would like to personally thank Jack Madden of Madden Custom Cues and Andy Scott of Phoenix Custom Cues for their support of the Amateur Artist Tournament. Each person donated a custom cue for the raffle. Accepting the money was Beverly Tandy of Bank of America. I would also like to thank my wife Charlie for all of her support and help she gave me in producing directing this event. A special thank you for the table judges, Doug Fritschy and Tanya Aranda who gave up their week-in to help me run this tournament.
