The 2002 Montana State BCA Singles Championships were held October 18-20 in Billings. The calcutta was held Friday night at Bullwackers and qualifying matches were held Saturday at Charlie Browns and Bullwackers. The finals were played at Bullwackers on Sunday. Entries were up dramatically over last year in the men s division and the women s division held about the same.

Craig Arnold s Scotch Doubles Masters presentation: I usually just present the trophies and get out of the way but this time I d like to say something before I present this I ve known Ted and Jo Woodward since before they were Ted and Jo, and since then they have become the scourge of scotch doubles events everywhere. You won t find finer ambassadors for the game of pool, nor will you find more gracious competitors. It s about time the 2002 Scotch Doubles Masters Champions, Ted and Jo Woodward.

NWPA TOUR STOP #6 THE BREAKING POINT; LYNNWOOD, WA The Northwest Women s Pool Association (NWPA) held its sixth and final 9-ball tournament of the 2002 season on October 12-13 in Lynnwood, Washington. Despite it being the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday, four Canadians arrived along with 35 players from Washington, Oregon and Idaho for a challenging playing field of 39 women. Tournament Director Ted Woodward and assistant Dan Coffman again lived up to their fine reputation of running a timely and smooth event.

The Breaking Point s owner Jonathan Denning hosted the event, providing his beautiful room, 14 of his fine tables, and a team of friendly staff Manager Jessica Penna and crew to tend to players needs. This (NWPA Tour Stop #6 continued by on page 16)

TAP held their summer session Titleholders at this great facility and gave out over $7,000.00 in prize money and awards. Pool players came from Klamath Falls, Eugene, Corvallis and Salem to participate in the Team, Singles and Scotch Doubles events. Once again, Roger Weibrecht did a great job as the tournament director with the help from Theresa Ellenwood, Paul & Laurie Kinney, David Hopfer and a host of other players.

2002 NWPA Awards Banquet With its inaugural season coming to a close, the Northwest Women s Pool Association (NWPA) along with The Breaking Point in Lynnwood, WA hosted its first annual Awards Banquet, Saturday evening, October 12.

Jonathon Denning, owner of The Breaking Point, opened his expansive restaurant and bar area to accommodate the banquet and awards ceremony Saturday evening. Delicious food for the banquet was graciously provided by NWPA Bronze Level sponsor, Entrées Inc., makers of Banzai Sushi and Asian Style entrees.

Vic Valdez, Chairperson of the NWPA board, opened the ceremonies by thanking all players who participated in NWPA events Kim Gates this year, proving that women s pool is alive and well in the Pacific Northwest. After an introduction of the board members, the awards ceremony commenced.

Tournament Director, Ted Woodward, and Assistant to the Tournament Director, Dan Coffman, were recognized for their hard work that has proven indispensable to NWPA events. Ted Woodward consistently travels for entire weekends with the tour in order to officiate each NWPA event.

As the NWPA s first non-industry sponsor, Henderson Mar of Entrées Inc., received a plaque honoring his generous contributions to the organization. Entrées Inc. is a Bronze Level Sponsor of the NWPA, donating meeting space, equipment, supplies and banquet food to the NWPA. Because the final point standings for the year would not be determined until Sunday, the awards for 1st through 4th place would not be handed out until then. Following a fun appreciation award given to Vic Valdez, the awards moved on to the most prestigious of the evening 2002 NWPA Sportswoman of the Year.

Some of the quotes from the voting process were read first: When I first met her, I couldn t play a lick. But she treated me and my game with respect.

Whether winning or losing, her attitude about this game is something we can all learn from. She is a true inspiration besides being the craziest person I know.

She is the most outgoing player on the tour. She is helpful to new players.

And win or lose, this woman NEVER has an attitude. When I grow up, I want to be like her.

And the 2002 NWPA Sportswoman of the Year is Kim Gates of Auburn, WA. On Sunday, the top four players for the 2002 season were determined and received their awards. The 2002 NWPA Tour Champion is Cindy Doty of Longview, WA, 2nd place is Mona Remedios of Surrey, B.C., 3rd is Martha Hartsell of Junction City, OR and 4th is Mary Hopkin of Richland, WA. The NWPA board would again like to thank all players that made our first year a success. We hope to see you all in 2003.

Located in Billings, MT, Bearcreek Billiard Manufacturing is an up and coming billiard table manufacturing company. This Saunders Family team custom builds billiard tables one at a time, painstakingly slowly in order to turn out one beautiful table after another.

Billy Saunders has been playing pool all of his life, and he has been building tables for over 35 years. He has built tables directly for people, and he has also worked in billiard table manufacturing plants. Billy has owned three pool halls as well. He and his son Troy Saunders started building tables together in 1991.

They build tables not only for private use, but also like to build pool halls.

The first pool hall they built was for Billy s brother, Lance Saunders. Over the years they have built many different types of tables, from various wood types to many distinct and creative styles. One customer wanted a pool table to go into his log home, and thus Billy and Troy hand-crafted their first log pool table. Other tables have been made of oak, aspen, cedar, pine and juniper.

Troy and his dad enjoy building each of the made-to-order tables almost as much as they love to play the game. On any given day, Billy can most likely be found over at BullWackers, shootin pool. And you can bet there have been many late nighters at the Saunder s home playing that one last game .

BREAKTHROUGH A Short Story by: Dean Shane Cassem

About the Author Dean Shane Cassem

Born in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father from Lebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his first cue stick at age 15. His father and grandfather before him had Cassem s restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb of Charleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. From age 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn, Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placed second in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966).

In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the bars and out of the rooms where stiffer competition would have honed his game. His stroke subsided completely until his mid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coors statewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981.

Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80 s, his game went dormant again until he sold his business and returned to school. At age 48, he completed his undergraduate work in theology, and earned Master s degrees in Marriage & Family Counseling and Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skills and has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shane has five Carter Keating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough, Resurrection, Backrooms, Twist of Fate and Trade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate in the bookstores

by November 2002. In addition, he has recently created two new characters; Skinny Malone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently, Shane also has a Marriage and Family Counseling practice. He and Mary, his wife of fifteen years, live in Fort Worth, the setting for his ongoing Carter Keating Series. PART 5

In Part One, New friend Dave Wakefield introduces young Carter Keating to pocket billiards for the first time. Keating watches captively as Wakefield and Jimmy The Stick Gadwell play nine ball in Willies Pool Palace. Part One ends as Gadwell completes a spectacular nine ball session with Wakefield, smirks cockily as Wakefield stomps off, then pulls up a chair next to young Keating for a chat. In Part Two, Wakefield and Tools Spinard challenge Gadwell and young Keating to an eight-ball match. Keating agrees, fails to make a shot the entire time, and faces the ridicule of Spinard, Wakefield, Gadwell and the other patrons in Willie s Pool Palace. Young Keating swears that he will learn to play the game, and play it well. Part III describes young Keating s rapid development as a player and, his introduction to Charley Sturgis, an old and wise mentor, who guides him to maturity, both as a pool player and as an individual. Part IV finds Keating and Charley Sturgis in Willie s Pool Palace dialoguing over a cup of coffee, talking about the rudiments of the game, and the qualities of real winners. Winter comes. Keating drops into Willie s after a winning match at a downtown parlor and whips up on Dave Wakefield in a well-played nine ball match. Afterwards, Russell, the Thin Man, Case, offers to back him against none other than Jimmy the Stick Gadwell, the very person who had actually tutored him on the tables.

CHARLEY STURGIS SPOKE QUIETLY, focus on the game n forget about the money. He rested his arms on the wheelchair, then continued.

If someone wants to place a bet tell them to talk to the Thin Man. Stay to yourself and most of all, Carter, think for yourself. His eyes shifted and narrowed on Gadwell as he stroked a couple of warm-up shots. Be ready for anything, he added. Don t be surprised or alarmed at any attempt to distract you. Just smile. Remember it s an act of fear on his part. That s to your advantage, Carter.

Gadwell turned and eyed me, then jerked his head toward the table. I pushed out of my seat and stepped up to the table. Eddy Cooksey pressed in the nine balls and lifted the rack. Gettim, Carter he said in an encouraging nasal tone.

Lag for the break? Gadwell offered.

Nod. We set ourselves at the table. Gadwell on the left, me on the right. Go, he growled, and tapped the cue ball softly down the table.

After hitting the back rail, it rebounded back toward me only three inches from the rail. My shot followed Gadwell s closely and finished a quarter inch better than Gadwell s.

A hush fell over the place. The kid won the lag.

Gadwell reached up and scratched his neck, and said nothing.

Grabbing the cue ball, I aligned myself right of center on the break line then eyed the one ball and drew back and brought the cue stick forward.

Upon impact, the cue ball jumped toward me then rebounded off the rail toward the center of the table. At the last moment, the eight kissed it firmly into the corner pocket.

Scratch. Gadwell had ball in hand and an open table.

A heavy murmur strolled through the crowd as Gadwell positioned the cue ball in front of the one ball. He snapped in the one (Breakthrough continued on page 19)

Lance McGill THE BEST IN THE GAME...MAY NOT BE IN THE GAME

What you are about to read is not an article; it is word for word as spoken

by Jimmy G- a billiard enthusiast; promoter; pool room owner; professional gambler; and a man known, enjoyed and respected on the pro tour. It is in response to and in support of the article that Paul Marquez wrote in July. [ Who the hell is lance McGill...and who cares? ] Jimmy G s words have gone from tape to paper without edit. I don t know jimmy s reason for wanting this; I do know that the others want to be heard and that they are relieved to have a volume of support for what they have long argued.

Darin Walding, Jay Reed, Jeremy Nelson, and Scott Barnard have all taken part; my commentary will follow in the form of a suggested workoutJAY REID: I have known Lance McGill for 11 years now and I want to say that this man has shown me nothing but good from day one. He is a blessing to me and I feel very fortunate to have him in my life. I am thankful that I took the time to get to know him it would have been my loss had I not. I have learned a great deal from him as well, both in pool and in life.

He has such a compassionate caring way towards people; he is one that will truly sacrifice and go the extra mile for you. And the answer is yes in case you want to know. This man has the most powerful stroke I have ever seen. We only gambled once- races to 9 for $20.00 [because he liked me] he was running racks and as uncomfortable as it is to see a race to 9 go by without shooting what was worse is that a lot of the racks looked alike and even worse than that he didn t look like he was doing anything. To this day I can still tell you my exact words to him and to this day I still cannot believe they came flying out of my mouth. Here s what I said. Get this now- I said, that s ok, you don t have to hit anymore balls for me highly unlikely for a pool player with my pride and ego. Thank you for your time and teaching McGill.

DARIN WALDING: I founded the billiard club at Portland State University, I placed high in the collegiate nationals, and I have played Mike Massey, Earl Strickland, Nick Varner, Johnny Archer, Jose Parica, and I have seen more than that. I understand the difficulty that may come from what I say here. And what I say is this, Lance McGill plays one pocket better than Reyes and Parica combined; he plays straight pool like Mosconi did; he plays 9-ball better than Earl [it s called level eleven] and he plays billiards like Hoppe. That is of course all disputable and it is my opinion. What I can tell you is that he is the only player having something like this written about him and that alone is a clear indication. After 11 years of extraordinary instruction I see and realize that he has gone beyond a place that I can get to-I am pleased to leave him there.

GET YOUR GAME BACK IN TUNE FOR THE NEW SEASON

Six Balls in Six Pockets This one is an oldie but a goodie. Start by placing the cue ball dead center of the table width ways and halfway between the side pocket and the diamond. Now align balls A and B to the center of the side pockets and frozen to the cue ball. Tap balls A and B in place so that they don t move.

You can now remove the cue ball and place as shown in the diagram. The four end balls should now be aimed along the dashed lines for the corners of the short rails. You are now ready to execute the shot. Aim the cue ball between balls A and B and hit the cue ball slightly below center using a hard stroke. You should see all six balls disappear from the table following the solid black lines. If any of the corner balls miss, adjust their aim to allow for the proper throw. I hope you enjoy this classic shot.

I was at a pool tournament and noticed a game a friend of mine was playing. He was down 2-0 in a race to 4. His opponent broke, a couple of shots, he s up 3-0. My friend walks over to me and made a statement that I didn t think I would hear from a quality player like he is, I can work my way back through the losers bracket. I looked at him, with a look of bewilderment I am sure, and said, You re not out of this one yet. All you need to do is win just one. Don t let him 4-zip you. Just win one. He looked at me and said OK! He won the next game, now it s 3-1. He looks in my direction, I put my index finger up and told him, One more, just one more. Now it s 3-2. He comes back over and says, I can win this. I said, No, just win one more. That s all you want to do for now. He wins hill-hill. He looks at me and I said, Just one more. He won the match 4-3.

In the mental game of pool it is important to keep your goals simple, just win one. Just win the first one. Take one game at a time, one shot at a time. Give yourself the opportunity to win or give yourself the opportunity for another shot.

Turkey Talk Let s talk turkey. I don t, of course, gobble gobble, mean it literally, gobble gobble !! But really. Why would anyone want to talk turkey??

The domestic cousins have a brain the size of a hazelnut and are the only creature alive, I have heard that will eat themselves to death.

The wild ones, at the minimum, fly well and at best are wily prey creatures with great eyesight. Is there a cultural fixture Wily Turkey? NO! Do we say, He/she has turkey eyes ? NO! Is there a song Fly Like a Turkey ?? NO! Oh well So anyway, back to talking turkey. There is a situation, which never ceases to amaze me. Imagine having a fashion show and not allowing any classy clothes; or having a whole bakery that sells only plain bagels; or a spelling bee with only one common 5-letter word; or holding a tournament and not letting Joe and Joey play, because they are too good, but letting Mikey shoot because some of the locals manage to beat him once in awhile. Selective discrimination is reflective of a Loser Mentality. Knowing your skills are outclassed by a strong opponent on the greens, yet facing him/ her and trying anyway is the path of growth. I cannot help but feel that banning specific non-pro individuals only because of their level of skill is a cowardly action, which reflects poorly on the entire pool community. How can players truly gauge their skills or improve when specific, high-calibre players are banned from the event? How can any of the remaining players take any real pride in winning in an arena bounded as tightly as a corseted woman? Unfortunately, in this case, pride has no place in this picture. It is mounted and framed by the Money-is-Everything Company. Money controls so much of each of our lives, in various ways. I don t know about you, but it appalls me that we have allowed it to taint in this manner a sport loved by so many. Classify tournaments to give lesser-skilled players a venue; this promotes the sport. Do not participate in selective discrimination against the very thing we all spend thousands of hours striving for excellence.

Spokane, WA On October 12th & 13th McQ s Billiards played host to another chapter of the ever popular class C 8 ball tournament. The event attracted 48 players, 9 ladies and a few under 21 players in action. The field was very competitive. This event also marked the first time I did not receive any complaints about someone s ability. An event without any complaining how strange is that. Sam Moul prevailed in the end with the finals going two sets. His opponent was Keith Hanson from Brewster, Washington. Keith won the first set 5-4 but Sam came back and nailed down a 5-0 win in the second set. Thanks again to all that played and we ll see you next time.

Class D Event a Success!!

Spokane, WA On the weekend of October 26th 27th McQ s Billiards hosted our first class D 8-ball event. The tournament was open to 32 players and by the time we did the draw 29 players were ready to compete. The field was assembled with players that had already played in class C tournaments. These players never finished in the money in any event and the field had spectacular parody.

The matches moved along nicely and the players had a blast. Marc Vargas moved through the board winning out some very close matches to claim the drivers seat. Hass, his opponent in the finals won the first set 3-1. Marc shut the door in the second set though with a 3-0 win to claim the first place money. Thank you to all that played and we will see you at the next one.

October 5-6, 2002 Missoula, MT Edwin Montal of Calgary defeated Al Greenlee of Calgary 9-5 to claim first place in the 21 st annual Montana State 9-Ball Championship held at Cue Ball s Billiards in Missoula, Montana, October 5th & 6th.

Edwin went undefeated to win his second straight victory here at Cue Ball s. He makes the game so effortless and has such an affable disposition, a true credit to our great sport. All the Canadians have a real good attitude towards the game. They are fierce competitors but they are gentlemen and have fun as well.

Most of this will come as no surprise to some of you, but maybe it will enlighten you as to the state of pool in Montana. There are people in this state that resent the fact that someone is better than they are. Rather than use this to their advantage and get better, they whine about it. They use phrases like NO MASTER PLAYERS or INVITATION ONLY to limit who plays and who doesn t.

When I moved back into this state after being gone for 5 years there were a number a guys dominating the tournament scene. Names like: Kohm, Hamper, Oliver, DeRoeck, & Smith were always at the top of the board. One state championship after another.

Tournaments wins everywhere.

Doubles, singles, it didn t matter.

They were IT around here.

But no one ever said They ruin tournaments, don t let them play at all. Not once did I ever hear something like Oh great, Jerry & Bob are here, we re all playing for second . These guys were Jeff Boucher respected for how good they played.

They were looked up to by others.

Kind of a measuring stick for the rest of us to judge ourselves by.

And something happened over the next couple of years, the players started getting better. Traveling to tournaments and seeking out the better players began to pay off. Soon a new breed of player came along. Names like: Olsen, Stanchfield and Boucher were showing up on top of the boards. These were the guys who took advantage of the better players and learned from them. They showed up to lose because they realized that was the only way to get better.

It seems to me that about every 5 to 7 years the names change.

Some of the names remain, but overall it s the new ones you hear most.

About 15 to 20 years ago the names were McGowen, Johnson, Gray, Quande, Christensen, Saunders & T. Boucher, but you heard about players like DeRoeck, Kohm, Oliver.

But something has changed, the list of new players is growing short. There are players out there who don t complain and show up to learn and watch. Hey, it s what I did for 3 years before I tasted victory. But there aren t that many any more. Not like 10 years ago.

On Sunday at any given decent tournament, it was packed. I remember the finals of the 1993 Traynor Memorial tournament in Butte when Kohm & DeRoeck beat Stanchfield & Boucher. Standing room only.

There was hardly enough room to play. There were 36 teams and a waiting list of another 20. Last year there were 24 teams and only about 10 people, including the players, watching the finals. What happened?

It appears to me that the majority of players either don t want to pay their dues or don t like the idea that they might lose. I have some shocking news for them. Unless they show up to play, they will never be any better than they are now. By paying dues I mean getting beat. I took plenty of beatings when I was learning. I put my fair share of entry fees in other player s pockets. But now I happen to be reaping the rewards of all those losses. To learn what it takes to beat the better players you have to play them first. To a man, I cannot think of a top player in this state that is not willing to help anybody get better. I myself will answer any questions and sometimes even help my opponent out while playing the match. I would like to see the other players in this state get better because that would make me better. And if my years of playing have taught me anything, it is that there is always someone better.

I was once told, The only thing you learn by winning is that you play good enough to win. Think about it.

New York and Pool Later in the day, we have a players meeting and draw and we know that play starts in the morning. My first draw is another player from years back, Jean Valincourt, who has not played in a big event in a long time either. I lose to her on Thursday afternoon and don t play again till 10 am Friday.

My matches Friday went much better. I played well and beat Jan McWorter early. Then at 3, I play one of the hottest young players, Angel Paglia, and win another match that even gets me into money. I m thrilled to death.

I have another match at 10 pm so I go to my room, rest, change, eat and head back to the poolroom for a match with Stacy Hurst. I played well to start and was ahead 3 to 0 but it was not to be. At some point I leaned over a shot and saw stars.

Heck I m almost 50 and it s been a long two days already.

I was never the same and lost the match. Now its time for me to be a tourist, see the sights and go back with some pictures. I keep telling the ladies on my tour that these events are a lot of work but I guess you have to attend one to realize how much. But it sure is fun to see all the pros that do this every month and keep on. My hat goes off to them for all the work they do to promote the game and themselves.

So I m back home now, and still getting caught up on my real job, which is to make a poolroom homey for all those players that love the game as much as I do and to make it fun for every one that plays.

I m invited to play in a WPBA event in New York City. Even I was in shock at first. After the whole idea set in it was time to get to work on flights and rooms and all that goes with a trip of this magnitude. It s been about ten years since I ve been to the big apple and the last time was for a WPBA event, and I did not fare well that time. New York is a Mecca for pool. Straight pool events have always been big there and the idea of going is to say the least scary, but reservations are made entries are paid and roommates have been secured.

I got lucky, the most used pool phrase, is how it all started. I found another person to share a cab from Newark. That was $80.00 when you add in tolls and tunnels and rush hour. I arrive at the bed and breakfast brownstone that I m staying at and it is cute as a button.

It s just like being at home except that I m on the 4th floor and there are no elevators. So I m sure to get in my exercise every day that I m here. I take a cab uptown to the Amsterdam billiard club and like magic I m in my natural environment again. Down into the basement and tables everywhere, they are just setting up the arena area for the event and all are hustling around with last minute preparations. The managers and crew are very friendly and know that ladies coming in are most likely players. They find me coffee and a table and set me right to work at getting a feel for the beautiful gold crowns that we will be playing on.

included such perks as polishing balls between every match! In addition, Jonathan graciously added $750 to the prize purse and announced his commitment to next year s season by committing to host the NWPA year-end tournament with a whopping $1,500 added.

The tournament made for a most exciting weekend. The top two finishers are seasoned players of the game both have played in pro events and both displayed tremendous drive and focus over the weekend. Long-standing local player, Linda Carter of Kent, WA, started off the weekend with a frustrating loss to Sara Schwefel [4-7]. Perhaps it was the thought of a quick out on the B-side (race to five) or maybe it took her first match to get her into gear.

Whichever the case, Linda Carter plowed her way through the entire B-side to reach the finals! She (l to r) Jessica Penna (Manager), Linda Carter, Ted Woodward showed great (Tournament Director) stamina and focus as she weaved her way through B-side matches against Kathy Iwata [5-3], Tamré GeenéRogers [5-2], Kendra McCoulier [5-1], Natalie Wiita [5-4], Emily Pham [5-3], Kim Sijer [5-2] Deby Welfringer [5-1], Katherine Czarkowski [5-4] and Mona Remedios [5-4]. She then had to face the winner of the A side, Mary Hopkin, for the finals; a race to 7 for the first set and a race to 5 in the second.

Another top player and no stranger to pro-events either, Mary Hopkin of Richland, WA arrived at the tournament with amazing resolve and focus. Mary kicked off the entire weekend in the zone and remained there as she dominated the A side with steady wins over Julie Valdez [7-2], Carol Mellors [73], Heather Doherty [7-1], Katherine Czarkowski [7-5], Deby Welfringer [7-5] Mary Hopkin and Mona Remedios [7-5].

The finals promised to be a most interesting match with these two veteran players going head to head both dominating their respective sides of the board the entire weekend. The scores proved most exciting with Mary starting set 1 off with a 2-0 lead over Linda. Linda then battled back to a 3-2 lead over Mary who, in kind, returned the favor to move the score in her favor again at 5-3. Linda didn t let the strong lead sway her and bore down to win the next 4 games for a first set win over Mary 7-5. With such a lengthy string of wins, it appeared set 2 of the finals was mentally dominated by Linda as she kicked it off with impressive runs at the table to a 2-0 lead over Mary. It was then Mary who dug deep to play some great safe shots against Linda to put herself on the board.

She followed it immediately with a winning 9ball break to tie up the score. Nerves and stamina began to fray for both players as they started trading short innings at the table with Mona Remedios numerous missed opportunities. Despite this, it was Linda who managed to hold it all together and cash in on her opportunities, resulting in a 5-3 victory over Mary. Her reward for her endeavors: an impressive $529 and 200 tour points, which put her in 5th place overall for the 2002 season.

The NWPA will close out the 2002 season with an 8-ball tournament at The Halftime Bar & Grill in Vancouver, WA, November 9-10. This event is only open to NWPA members who have won less than $150 [excluding consolation tournament winnings]. A minimum of $500 will be added guaranteed. In addition, the NWPA is pleased to announce the finalization of its 2003 season schedule.

competitive by each person playing. Some of the best pool was played, of any tournament, anywhere.

Probably the best of the rest was the match between Glenn Atwell and Tony Balzas. Both are top Northwest players. Tony handled Glenn with some of the most flawless play ever. Actually, Glenn never had much opportunity to get to the table offensively. Tony bested Glenn to put him on the losers side. Glenn worked his way back with an emphatic win over Russell Cearcy and the 2nd chance at Tony in the finals. It was instant replay of the first time around for Glenn and a second place finish. Tony won the Master s Singles title and definitely played the solidest of a very tough field. This young man has a tremendous future in competitive billiards.

On the Women s side, Josie Leroy is a tough, up-coming Lady poolplayer from Newberg, Oregon, who gave Barbara Thompson of Vancouver, WA a tough time for the Ladies Masters title.

You would be hard pressed to find anybody that didn t have a good time from meeting up with old friends, making new ones and new stories to tell, not to mention the incredible pool shooting that was on display. I saw many familiar faces of friends I have made over the years and I made some new friends as well. It was great to see everyone and to have the time to sit and get to know everyone. The weather was superb the whole week and everyone enjoyed themselves with the tournament operations being handled by Gary Benson and all ran smoothly.

It was nice to welcome Charlotte Hagen back, after her recent medical problems. We missed Harry Peterson, who is gravely ill, and wish him a full recovery very soon.

Players from Canada to California converged on Q-Street Billiards in Springfield, Oregon for the 2nd of several stops on the newly formed Pechauer Cues 9-Ball West Coast Tour. Owners Dennis and Sharon Blackwell, and the friendly staff at Q-Street greeted excited competitors Friday night.

An auction was held Saturday morning to accommodate players traveling from afar. Play commenced directly thereafter. New behind the helm of tournament direction, On The Wire staff members handled the flow efficiently and ahead of schedule. Play ran down around 8:00 Saturday evening, giving everyone a muchneeded breather and a shot at karaoke!

Sunday morning brought back the top 16.

Californians emerged on the front side, while the Canadians tried to fight their way through the backside.

Dan Louie stopped Alan Ima in his tracks, while young Brett Seyler knocked off John Horsfall.

Spectators from all (l to r) Billy Palmer, Tony Annigoni over enjoyed match after match of awesome pocket billiards! The finals pitted Tony Annigoni of Manteca, CA against Billy Palmer of San Francisco, CA. Palmer took an early lead, shooting some beautiful pool, and although Annigoni was able to attempt a comeback, Palmer shut down the match at 13-6.

confidently, eased to the seven, moved the cue ball down the table to the eight, popped in the eight and finished off the game with an easy shot on the nine.

He led one game to none.

I WAS OVERCOME BY A CONSUMING, DEBILITATING heat within me. How could I be so stupid, I thought? At least make him work for it, Keating! Gadwell doesn t need any help from you. What a stupid childish mistake.

Suddenly I felt humiliated. The great Keating, the kid prodigy. Yeah, come a long way alright. Ha, ha, ha. Look at the incredible, unbeatable kid now.

Keating, what s changed? You re still the laughing stock at Willie s.

Eddy Cooksey racked the balls as Gadwell stepped to the table. After Cooksey nodded, Gadwell with tightly pursed lips jacked his stick back and launched it forth like a rifle shot. The cue ball slammed dead center into the rack. Miraculously, after going through a radical rendition of bumper pool, it stayed on the table. Though rattled by almost every ball on the table, it finally braked inches from the upper corner pocket.

The crowd gasped. Four balls were left on the table. Five had dropped into the pockets. Including the nine.

Gadwell led two games to none.

Oh, God! No! Gadwell lopped onto mistakes like a spider on its prey within its deadly web. On top of that he was a notorious momentum player. Given the force of his break he had the capacity to run five, six games without giving his opponent a shot.

Suddenly, my stomach started rumbling. I felt nauseous. My head started spinning.

Be right back, I whispered numbly to Charley Sturgis.

While Eddy Cooksey racked the balls, I leaned my cue stick against my chair and crossed the room to the men s room. Once inside, I opened a stall door, dipped my head into the john and puked my guts out. I stayed there. How could I do such an idiotic thing? My God, how was I going to win a game?

Keating the prodigy, the laughing-stock of the entire city.

It s all in your head, son, intervened a suddenly silent whisper. As though Charley Sturgis was in the stall with me. The voice continued, Until you handle the battle in your head you ll never be a great player. Lifting my head from the toilet seat, I suddenly stared into nothingness and looked around. I was alone. The wall before me seemed like a huge movie screen playing vivid colorful pictures almost as if I was in a trance.

Stay focused, Carter, the voice prodded. Direct all that passion, all that energy into what you re doing. Discipline your mind, Carter. Set the stage, endure, and play your best. Win the battle with yourself. That s the real battle, Carter.

The hunter green stalls and faded yellow walls suddenly came into focus, and I looked around me. Now a centeredness welled up inside me. And I became angry in a different way.

I let it consume me.

Rising off my knees, I wiped my mouth and flushed the toilet then opened the door and went to the sink and gargled and washed my face. I looked in the mirror and brushed my full dark hair. This was the mental block that Charley had talked about, and outside a few feet away was the opportunity I d dreamed about, planned on and thought about. I drew in a huge breath and looked at myself in the mirror then exhaled slowly and smiled.

The time had come to break through the wall. Turning, I unlocked the door, breathed in deep and stepped back through. With shoulders back, my long frame strolled to the table. Out of the corner of my eye, a somewhat familiar trench coated figure moved away from me, lost quickly in the back of the crowd.

For a fleeting moment I wondered who it might be.

Thought you d fallen in, Tools Spinard yelled out cynically.

The place burst out laughing.

A smile washed across my face as I looked at Jimmy, the Stick, Gadwell, and said, Sorry about the delay, Stick. Scared me so much, I lost my innards.

He looked at me, thought about what I d said for a moment then leaned in to the table and set for the next break. Without hesitation, he reared back and brought the cannon home again. And again, as before, he exploded the rack.

Nothing much changed. The nine ball went into the hole again.

Gadwell led three games to none.

Hoots and whistles roared from the upside bettors, while groans and sighs poured out from the losers. Gadwell grinned broadly. If they d turned off the lights, he d have lit up the place like a light bulb.

Rackem , I barked to Eddy Cooksey. Before he cools off.

Leaning back in my chair, I whispered to Charley Sturgis, He s on a roll.

Sturgis glanced at me just enough to catch my eye, and then said, Had a talk with yourself, eh?

I grinned. Yeah, had a visit with the ghost of Charley Sturgis.

They haven t put me in the grave yet, son, he said warmly.

Thank God for that, I gasped, then pushed off my chair and went over to the Stick.

He narrowed his eyes and looked at me suspiciously. Yeah, kid, what s up?

Leaning in to him, I muttered quietly, Stick, it suddenly occurred to me that I m in the presence of greatness.

He grinned. You ll live through it, kid, he said cockily.

Uh huh, I muttered, while chalking my cue. Listen, Stick, if you shut me out, I ll put an extra hundred in your pocket. Plus, I ll bow down before you in front of the whole frigging crowd.

He jerked back and eyed me like I d just escaped out of the nut house.

You re my hero, Stick, I intoned, so don t disappoint me. Then I grinned, turned my back on him, and went back to my seat next to Charley Sturgis.

Ask him for a date? Charley jibed.

Just taking care of the things I have control over, I replied.

Uh huh. He turned his eyes toward the counter. Better bring me a refill, Honey, he said to Jacqie. Looks like it s going to be a long night.

Something inside spoke to me in a way I d longed for, and that something told me Charley was right. Relaxing, I settled back in my chair and waited for a chance. I knew at some point, before this night was over, the opportunity would come.

Libel Suit Filed Against WPBA & Board of Directors

New York, NY The WBPA and it s Board of Directors (Jan McWorter, Kelly Oyama, Stuart Mattan, Monica Webb and Candi Rego) were named in a lawsuit filed in the Supreme Court of the State of New York in the County of New York

by Dr Diane Sorrentino.

Dr. Sorrentino was discharged as Secretary of the WPBA and an elected member of the WPBA s Board of Directors earlier this year. The lawsuit is seeking compensatory and punitive damages as a result of that dismissal and the publication of libelous and slanderous statements by the WPBA and fabrication and falsification of the charges used to dismiss Dr. Sorrentino.

BCA Signs 5-Year Agreement with Expo Producer

September 26, 2002 Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) and William T. Glasgow, Inc. of Orland Park, Illinois recently entered into a five-year agreement to manage and produce the BCA International Trade Expo. We re very pleased that the BCA and Glasgow will continue to work together to produce the BCA Expo, said BCA Executive Director Stephen Ducoff. This company has done a superb job producing our Expo since 1999 and provides the BCA and its members with an annual event that literally brings the world billiard industry together under one roof.

The next BCA International Trade Expo will be held July 9-12, 2003 at the Sands Expo & Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Business of Billiards seminar program runs Wednesday, July 9 - Friday, July 11, with the Expo floor open Thursday, July 10 - Saturday, July 12.

The annual General Membership Meeting as well as the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) Challenge the Stars benefit will be at the Sands on Wednesday, July 9 and the Expo concludes with the BCA Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony, held Saturday, July 12.

Based on feedback from both exhibitors and retailers, the BCA board of Directors decided the 2004 Expo will move from its traditional July timeframe to early April. BCA President Skip Nemecek explains that the earlier Expo date allows retailers to place orders that the manufacturers will be able to fill in time for the 2004 holiday season. The Expo will have April dates in 2004 and 2005 so that we can gget a good read on the success of the date change before making any concrete decisions for 2006 and beyond. We re anticipating that the earlier Expo date will be good for the industry.

BCA Elite Player Council Elections From: Amy Long - Director of Marketing & Business Development

September 27, 2002 Colorado Springs, CO - Players, both amateur and professional, will soon have enhanced representation on the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Board of Directors by virtue of the newly formed Elite Billiard Player Council. The board reconfiguration is part of the BCA s ongoing efforts for recognition by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) as an Affiliated Sport Organization (ASO), the first step in having cue sports included in the Olympic or Pan American Games.

According to the revised bylaws, a player is eligible to run for the Elite Billiard Player Council if, within the previous ten years, they were selected by the BCA to represent the U.S. in an event recognized by the World Confederation of Billiard Sports (WCBS) or if, in the previous 24 months, finished in the top half in a Master Division of the BCA National 8-Ball Championships or the top half of the highest division of the BCA National 9-Ball Championships. Any person who meets the criteria may nominate him or herself for placement on the ballot. The first election will take place on Sunday, May 11, 2003 at the Riviera Hotel & Casino at 12:00 p.m. (noon).

Players may submit nominations in writing to the BCA in advance of the election and nominations will also be taken from the floor the day of the election. Election will be by sealed ballot. Each nominee is responsible for providing verification that they meet the Elite Player definition. TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

2002 MOHEGAN SUN INTERNATIONAL The premier special event in Women s billiards will be telecast on ESPN for the fifth year in a row. The 2002 MOHEGAN SUN INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS will be held November 6-7 at the Mohegan Sun casino, Uncasville, CT. The field of players will include a stellar cast of international champions.

The Tournament of Champions is one of the most widely viewed billiards programs on ESPN. Once each year four international champions are brought together in a sudden-death shootout with winner-take-all of $25,000. The purse is the highest single payday in the sport, and the winner claims one of the most coveted titles in pool Champion of Champions!

The 2002 field includes top stars in the sport. Karen Corr, Allison Fisher, Jeanette Lee and Helena Thornfeldt.

The 2002 event will be ADDMISSION FREE for pool fans from around the USA and the world. The matches are two sets, race to five games each set, with a 1-game sudden death tie-breaker in the event of tied sets.

TAP Teams in Vegas On October 5th and 6th Evergreen Division of The Association For Pool, Inc.(TAP) had a total of 15 teams competing to go to Nationals. Five teams in each division battled it out and even though we were going to be sending a total of six teams (two per division) we are only sending five teams. Why you may ask? We had one team competing in all three divisions and two other teams competing in two divisions. Therefore this doubled their chances in going to Nationals. Out of those teams only one team rose to the occasion and qualified in both the 2nd & 3rd Place Divisions (House Sticks) and we would like to take this time to say congratulations to all teams that are going and wish them the best of luck. Oregon TAP Titleholders at Q Street

Congratulations to More Sure Shots of Mick and Mom s (Stayton, Oregon) for winning the grand daddy of them all, the 1st Place Titleholders. It was not an easy task as the Big Johnson s team from Klamath Falls revenged an earlier loss by winning the losers bracket and then beating More Sure Shots the first match in the championship game to force a second and final match which both teams decided to play on Sunday, September 29th at 9a.m. With an early 1st Place - 2nd Place Titleholders start for both teams and 5 Stix & 2 Lucky Chics (Salem) a very close match it seemed as though the morning just didn t agree with the Big Johnson s placing them in 2nd. It did however make for a very exciting match to watch. Not only was there the pride of calling yourself the champion, there was also $1800.00 waiting for the winning team to claim.

Also equal to the challenge this weekend was the team 5 Stix & 2 Lucky Chics from Salem who won the 2nd Place Titleholders and the 3MTA3 team from Klamath Falls who won the 3 rd Place 2nd Place - 1st Place Titleholders Titleholders. These The Big Johnson s (Klamath Falls) teams among other teams already qualified will be participating for a chance to win a free trip to Las Vegas to compete in the TAP Nationals being held October 23rd 27th, 2002.

In the Singles event Alfonso Merchant from Salem won the 2 s, 3 s & 4 s singles tournament and Bob Heckel from Salem won the 5 s, 6 s & 7 s.

Our most popular tournament, the Scotch Doubles was twice as nice this session. As mentioned earlier Dennis of Q Street Billiards donated all the quarters from the tables to the Scotch 1st Place Captains Tournament Jesse Arismendez Doubles event making the pot twice as big. Congratulations goes to the team of Bobby Alford and Teresa Shaw from Corvallis for taking 1st Place and Chris Bartron & Tom Saksa also from Corvallis for taking 2nd Place in this fun tournament.

SCOTT BERNARD: I m one of the top bar box players in Portland and have enough ability and experience on the 9 footers to stand with most players. I was fortunate enough to begin my pool playing experience being sponsored by Jimmy G., because of that I got a lot of attention and quality instruction from the top local players. I have gone to the major tournaments. I have exposure and know what pool can look like when it s played on a world class level. For me this is an easy matter. Lance McGill is the best pool player that I have ever seen. That s all I want to say.

JIMMY G-I know every modern player. Not from tapes or what I ve heard. I know them and I know what the problem here may well become.

Lance McGill is happy where he is and won t go out of his way to prove any of this. Him proving it to you or for you is none of my business. I want to tell you what I know and what I ve seen, most importantly that I saw it for 3 years straight EVERY NIGHT. He was not in the zone. He lives there- that means that often I was watching this level of play for 2-3 months straight each and every night! He would go out of town for a few days and when he returned he got right back to work. When he worked he was there from before open to close. He had a key and would usually be there when I arrived and it would be rare that he left before I did. This man was giving it 12-16 hours every day. One day he was breaking and racking when I arrived.

Breaking, looking at the result and then rack and break again.

It was about 11am when I arrived; at 2am he was still breaking and racking. He was doing a job. He would send someone next door for Chinese food and stop to eat, make a few jokes with us, and then right back to work. That level of work is unheard of and what makes it worse is this: he already had, by far, the most powerful and effective break I had seen in my life! And from there he saw fit to do that level of work! I may be the only poolroom owner in the history of poolrooms to go over and ask a player to please take a little off of that break? That was on the gold crown with a light right above.

When he was working on table #6 where the light was in the ceiling he would hit the ceiling over and over until he wanted to stop and use the gold crown. One day I asked him to not hit my ceiling anymore and he never did it again.

He was also considerate enough to put a swatch of billiard cloth under the cue ball to save wear on my cloth. I sat and asked him about the break that day and he showed me. When I break Jimmy, if I get to play the one ball here next [he points to the lower left hand pocket] I m out. He did it a few times including the run out and then he broke and showed me the one ball next in THAT corner. He was making between 3 and 5 balls on the break and just pointed to the obvious out. And he did it over and over again. Anybody could win with that break. The more fascinating thing is that all of his students have more

powerful breaks than the rest of us so he can also teach it. The rest of this is easy and I ve seen people and students of his argue this until they were blue. I doubt that they will have that argument with me. Varner, Sigel, Strickland, Archer, whoever you want to name- Lance McGill has the most powerful stroke in the game of pool, the most accurate and the most powerful. If you have questions I am known and easy to findCOMMENTARY: I agreed to all of this because I want you to listen. I want you to use the workouts that I designed. The stroke and accuracy you re hearing about here is the result of some things. I want to offer you those things and have you succeed from their use. Those of you that do the work will have a like result. If pool is not your life and you can only work at it a limited amount of hours you will still have the opportunity to gain more power and accuracy than most. The first thing I recommend is that you spend some of your practice time on a billiard table. You need not be proficient just have the basic understanding. There is of course a limit to the percentage of your time that is useful and you can email me for help in deciding how much time you should spend on billiards and the other things that follow. And while we re discussing billiard balls, when you want to gain an understanding of the kind of stroke you need for monster draw- use a billiard ball with a regular sized object ball; then when you have that, use the billiard cue ball and a snooker object ball; and from this you will have the monster draw. After some daily work on the billiard table go to the 9 ball break.

This is the fastest and most effective way to go from warming up to in stroke. You will be surprised at how well this works.

I didn t design it, I noticed that after my power break workouts that I was playing immediately in dead stroke when I moved to the next step: after the 9 ball break workout I go to working on my high run in straight pool. Find the high run that you can do daily and make it happen. Begin with the standard 14.1 stack shot. [Ask any player or find it in a book on straight pool.] Next is what I call the island exercise. Place the 15 balls randomly on the table with every ball at least 10 inches away from the rails. Take cue ball in hand and run the rack having the cue ball never reach a rail. If this was all you did for 2-3 weeks, if it was all of the pool that you played during that time you would begin seeing patterns that you may not ever see no matter how long you shoot pool. This exercise will also allow you to develop uncanny sense of touch and feel far far ahead of schedule.

On October 9 and 10, 2002 eight of the greatest artistic pool specialists in the world emerged at the ESPN Zone in Baltimore, MD. This magnetic host of superstars embraced the twists, turns, dips, and dives of the round spheres, along with an assortment of prop novelties strategically placed across the green blaze. The highly spirited list of competitors included Mike Massey, Stefano Pelinga, Sebastian Giumelli, Ray Allard, Gerry Watson, Steve Geller, Charles Darling and, finally, Tom Dr. Cue Rossman from Indiana was making an ESPN debut in his unique table trotter style.

Matt Braun Productions had set the stage for what would prove to be some of the closest matches in the history of this highly rated TV presentation. The format would be similar to horse in basketball. One player would choose a shot for a hopeful 1 point score, if made, while his opponent would have an equal chance of scoring a critical point for the same shot. Both players would have 2 attempts at each challenge. A total of 12 shots would be chosen by each player thus offering a few surprise selections in a strategic plan of calculated moves by each champion. And, surprise surprise would be the name of this game in more ways than one!!

Pelinga and Rossman would play for the title, glory, and the $25,000 first place prize. All was in place for a flavorful night of competitive spirit and audience enjoyment, Rossman once again took an early lead, but Pelinga narrowed the gap. The score was tied with 1 challenge left.

Rossman chose the starburst shot (15 balls in 3 pockets in 5 rapid fire cue movements). Perfect! Pelinga missed, so the score stood at 11 - 10, with one shot left for Pelinga to present. A new masse never before seen

by Rossman was Pelinga s choice. Both attempts by Pelinga fell short of their target, assuring Rossman of the victory!! The debut of Dr. Cue on ESPN turned into a special blessing with this victorious moment. The prayers for burning focus and wisdom in this unique format of shot selection were answered.

Positions of finish with corresponding prize money were as follows: 1st $25,000, 2nd $5000, 3rd & 4th $2000 each, and 5th thru 8th $1500 each. A custom Viking Cue engraved with 2002 ESPN Trick Shot Magic Champion was presented to Dr. Cue as an additional prize. Watch for the upcoming ESPN schedule of TV releases for this historic event.
