This was a tournament that Allison had debated about attending. While dealing with a medical condition, Allison went undefeated throughout the event.

With the new format used by the WPBA, eight players from the winners bracket and eight players from the one-loss side compete for the title in a race to 7, single elimination format. The title is up for grabs with the final 16 players. Saturday’s rounds saw Allison defeat Helena Thornfelt after the match went hill-hill. Vivian Villarreal defeated Pam Treadway 72; Monica Webb came back from a 6-3 deficit to defeat Julie Kelly 7-6. And the surprise of Saturday’s play Kim Shaw was the defeat of Karen Corr #2 ranked by Kim Shaw #14 ranked player on the tour. The match went hill-hill before she won her way into Sunday’s matches. The field was narrowed to Allison Fisher, Kim Shaw, Vivian Villarreal and Monica Web for Sunday’s line-up. Semi-final #1 pitted Allison and Vivian against each other with Allison coming out on top 7-5 despite Viv’s comeback attempt. The second semi-final between Kim and Monica had Kim earning her spot in the finals by defeating Monica 7-4. The finals were set Allison Fisher would face Kim Shaw and the winner would take home the $14,000 first place prize money. Kim came out fighting but Allison was not to be stopped. She prevailed in a 7-5 victory.

JD and Andy Ruth win 2006 Juan de Fuca Mixed Scotch Doubles 9 Ball Tournament 21 couples played in the Juan de Fuca Mixed Scotch Doubles 9 Ball Tournament and when it was over JD and Andy Ruth eked out the win that gave them first place. After winning the point JD and Andy waited for an opponent and they got a very tough one in Larry and Andrea Wilson from Victoria. In the first set, Larry and Andrea won 7-4 and in the final set they had a 6-2 lead before JD and Andy reeled of five straight games to take a 7-6 win and the first place prize of $900. To get to the finals undefeated, JD and Andy
posted wins over Marvin Seal and Mary Olson 7-6, Jim Boyce and Jessica 7-5, Jeff Jimenez and Tiffany Taylor 7-3, Larry and Andrea 7-4 and won the point over Kevin Fong and Pam Rushton 7-1. Larry and Andrea got to the finals with wins over Phil Wilson and Bernie Foster 7-6, Clyde Bowles and Heidi Hoffman 7-1, Pat and Cathy Gamble 7-0. IPT Players Is the IPT PARTY Over? .....’Til 2007 To Be PAID Oct 30,2006 IPT Alert: The International Pool Tour’s Masters says Trudeau Championship, King of the Hill and Tour You be the judge! We have received dozens of phone calls from pool players all over the country and hundreds of emails trying to find out if we know anything about the IPT and the subject was all the same. When are we going to get paid? We’ve tried to answer the best we can but we didn’t know anything more than they did. Questions range from “Is Chicago a go? Did Sigel and Loree Jon get paid the advertised amounts? What about 2007? When will the players get paid from Reno? Does Ho Interactive actually exist?” (Ho is reported to be buying IPT) One emailer couldn’t find Ho Interactive on the internet. They stated that IPT was the only entity that has mentioned them and that was in an IPT press release. Does the IPT exist? Is it a corporation? Does it have a trademark? According to http://www.uspto.gov/ IPT is not a registered trademark. What is it’s legal status? These are all good questions. Billiard Digest did an interview with Kevin Trudeau on the subject of being paid from Reno. I would suggest logging onto www.billiardsdigest.com to read the interview and make your own judgement on the future of the IPT. Card Tournaments are officially being rescheduled. These schedule changes are due to many factors, many relating to the Ho Interactive acquisition and financing schedule being pushed back due to recent legislation signed into law relating to online gaming. New dates for these events will be published in the coming days as the IPT event team is in contact with each of the venues. Tentatively, the IPT is targeting February and March for these tournaments and they will most likely be held in Chicago. The IPT offers its sincerest apologies for those players and fans who have already made travel arrangements to attend these events. Players who have played in qualification tournaments and won qualifying spots in the 2007 Tour Card Tournament will be contacted shortly with the new dates. Again, the IPT apologizes for the inconvenience. Due to the fact that the IPT Masters Championship needs to be played in order to complete the field for the Tour Card Tournament, it was impossible to keep this event scheduled as-is. Please note that these events are not cancelled, but rather in the process of being rescheduled. The moment that new dates are secured, there will be an announcement made. It is expected that within a couple of days new dates will be secured for each of these events. The Masters Championship will still be considered a 2006 event, thus prize earnings in that tournament will be reflected on the Money List for 2006.

or 9 cushions in diagram pattern to the dollar bill. the cue ball must stop on or over the dollar bill. The vertical edge of the cue ball closest to the dollar bill will determine success of the shot. Here are a few helpful hints on how to execute this shot. I place my cue ball in the 1x1 diagram quadrant where the number 8 is in the diagram. If you place the cue ball as diagram you risk the chance of hitting your hand on the table as you follow through. You’ll need to use at least a 10 inch bridge length so you can execute a long fast warm up stroke. I cue the cue ball with a touch of left English and a touch of draw. The closer the cue ball hits the fifth rail by pocket E, close to scratching, the better your chances of making the shot. If your head is low on the cue when you shoot pool, stand up more so your upper body doesn’t get in the way as you follow through with this powerful stroke. Have fun with this one.

Crossing The Line

San Francisco Billiard Academy There are easy ways and hard ways to play position. “Not crossing the line” is one principle that will help you to find the easy ways. In the upper situation, you are playing eight ball with just the one ball left from your group. The problem is to get shape on the rather restricted eight ball. The simplest way to get into the shape zone is to shoot with a little draw to go along Path A. The shot is straight enough that you will have to use a little extra power to move the cue ball far enough. The problem is to get just the right speed to end in the shape zone. You have about one hand-span for the margin of error to avoid being blocked by the 10 or 15. For players who have both draw and english in their toolbox, Path B is a much better choice. Bob Jewett Even though the shot is more complicated, if you get the cue ball to hit by the first diamond as shown, the speed of the shot can be off by a lot and you will still have a shot on the eight. The idea here is that as long as you can get the right direction on the cue ball the speed will not be important. The cue ball will be traveling directly along the line of the next shot. Is the added complication of the draw and english worth the benefit? That’s up to how you play. If draw is still a miscuing mystery for you and the use of side spin causes most of your shots to miss by a lot, you should stick with the simple way. If you want to make any real progress, you have to master the other techniques. Another point in the upper shot is the choice between the narrow and wide part of the shape zone. While Path A takes the least draw (or english), if you pull it to the left with some more draw or english, you will cross the shape zone where it is wider, although you are still going across the line of your next shot.
Another example is the lower diagram. To get from the 1 to the 2 (at nine ball) you could just roll the cue ball along Path C. This shot is a little touchy again because you need to have just the right speed on the cue ball to avoid being blocked by the 3 ball. Path D takes more effort, but as long as you have enough control of your draw to land on the right spot on the side cushion, shape is nearly guaranteed. One other factor in this shot is that C must be hit quite softly and if the table is not flat a miss is likely. D allows you to hit the ball more firmly. Once you get used to the idea of not crossing the line, you will start to (Crossing the Line continued on page 29)

10 THINGS THAT SEPARATE A PROFESSIONAL FROM AN AMATEUR

Samm Diep © October 2006 Last month, I had the honor and pleasure of competing in a small proam tournament with five WPBA stars and only three invited amateurs. My early exit from the tournament was disappointing but watching the rest of the tournament gave me great inspiration. As I studied the final matches, it brought to mind a list of ten things that separate the professionals from the amateurs. Here are my observations: Samm Diep 1. Holding the cue ball for shape. A pro will not miss a shot when they need to hold the cue ball for position. Many times, amateurs will shoot a shot tentatively when they’re thinking about where the cue ball needs to be, particularly on shots where you need to hold the cue ball for shape. Often times, an amateur player will just barely under cut a ball and end up with “perfect” position. 2. Tougher opening shots. Pros are not afraid to take the tougher opening shot to get the better run out. In this case, the easier opening shot may be a solid, but stripes may have the ideal layout. They will choose the “correct” opening shot regardless of the difficulty. 3. Overcoming a miss or loss. Pros can break and run the first two games of a match after missing an easy shot to lose the previous match. I watched Laura Smith miss the second-to-last ball to lose the match just before mine, only to break and run the first two games of our match. She wasn’t beating herself up over the miss. If she was, it didn’t show at all. She played flawlessly. 4. Getting back in line. When they get out of line, pros will make the tough shot in front of them and get back in line. Often times, instead of focusing on how to get out of a jam, amateurs are still dwelling on how they got themselves into it. Therefore, their energy is not on making the shot and getting back in line. It’s wasted on the previous bad shot. Perfect example, pointing to the table at where you intended to leave the cue ball. 5. Strength to run a rack after being down. After being down 3-0 against her own friend, Monica Webb flew out of her seat after a dry break by Helena Thornfeldt. She would run that rack and the following one. A professional does not let the score distract or defeat them. 6. Takes the break on a miscue. I watched Helena take the break from Monica, her own friend and traveling partner, after she miscued on her attempt. The term “professional” does not only refer to their occupation in this case. They’re all business. 7. Table run after a miscue. On the flip side, in the same rack, after miscuing and losing the break, Helena broke dry and Monica maintained her composure and ran that rack out. A professional is simply that. They have a job to get done and it doesn’t matter if they are playing their friend of their enemy. It will not stop them from doing their job. 8. A pro gets closer. Generally speaking, professionals get closer to their next object ball. Instead of just deciding what general area or what line the cue ball needs to be in, a professional will pinpoint a spot on the table and it is usually within a couple diamonds of their next shot. Amateurs may be left with a long, tester because they were more concerned with making the last ball. That’s how pros make it look so easy; they just don’t leave themselves tough shots. 9. Consistent pre-shot routine and ball address. Most professionals are very religious about their pre-shot routine, sometimes down to the number of warm-up strokes before firing in the ball. If you pay close attention, professionals address the ball in the same manner and go through the same series of motions prior to each shot, regardless of difficulty. 10. Fire in the last ball. If you watch enough ESPN, you’ll notice that most of the time, the last ball on the table is fired in. Unless it’s necessary, rarely is it babied or rolled into the pocket. A professional player is not tentative about shooting the last ball on the table. They stroke it in with confidence. They don’t take any chances with the ball rolling off or skidding on them. Fire in the hole! I know there are many more things that separate a professional from an amateur than this, but these are some points I noticed last weekend. 1945 1945 was a very exciting year. The war was over and the world celebrated the dawn of a new era. Brunswick was ready to begin producing pool tables for the Billiard rooms that would be opening for the boys when they returned from Europe and Asia. During the war the company produced tables for the war effort and the boys played pool in bases all over the world and when they returned they would flock to the billiard rooms that would be opening. The drawing boards were full of new ideas and the engineers planned to change the tables for the first time since the French revolution. It was the 100th year since Brunswick had been in business so it was time for some new ideas and the bells and whistles were Pat Sheehan about to sound. Since the dawn of the indoor billiard table bolts had passed through the rail horizontally through the rail to fasten them to the bed of the table. Since the early table beds were wood it was an easy task but as slate was used for the bed it became a difficult task. A hole had to be drilled horizontally through the slate and vertically to place a nut for the bolt to go into. That nut had to be perfectly positioned and held in place so that the bolts could be tightened without cross threading and be removed and reinserted time and time again. A light went on in an engineer=s head, Why not insert them vertically through the slate into the bottom of the rail. Simple stupid there isn’t enough room. The table frame is in the way and the slate isn’t wide enough or long enough to facilitate this radical idea; so they made the slate 11/2" Bill Hulen wider all the way around artwork and drilled holes through survived the surface. Now they 50 years at Grand thought that by losing the Central Bowl lower part of the rail they would give up the rigidity of the bouncing surface; so the rail would go from 4 to 6 inches and plates would be added to accept the bolts coming up through the slate. The design people took the engineers ideas and thought to get rid of the boxy idea and put some curves and rounds to the design. A casting was designed to accept the pocket and the pocket was changed to the more modern style we see on the tables today. The frame was made smaller and cantilevered and a deep apron was designed to cover the exposed under frame. Since this was the 100th year lets call one an Anniversary and lets use all this scrap Aluminum from the airplanes that will not be used to fight the enemy and call it the Centennial for 100 years. They also designed the Sportsman CF the Modern and the Sentinel for Uncle Sam. The first three were big hits; the modern was only made for a few years and the need for the Jim Lebold and myself at The Cue Ball government dwindled since they had so many Liberty and Victory left over from the War effort. Orders came in so fast for these new tables that the factory was not ready and a few necessary refinements were needed. They needed slate so badly that there was not time for it to cure and they had left out the long supports to keep the slate from sagging. The legs on the Centennial and Anniversary were bolted through the frame into the top of the leg and the (1945 continued on page 29)

SINK-INS When a ball hits a rail, it sinks into the rubber. The depression can be as deep as a quarter of an inch on a hard stroke, which opens the door to a group of shots I call sink-ins. Some are easy; some aren’t. They can save the day in escaping from hooks and in creating problems for your contemptible and loathsome opponent.
An easy one This easy threecushion-first doublethe-rail shot is possible because the cue ball sinks into the rubber to escape from behind the 1-ball. With more left sidespin, the same pattern can be used to hit the 2-ball. No English or running (right) English will send the cue ball along the dashed line to hit the 3-ball.
An even easier one Many of the shots diagrammed in my book are tough even for advanced players. To counterbalance that, here’s one so easy that you can teach it to tiny children. They may be so pleased at making a reverse-English, doublethe-rail combination shot that they will become captivated by the game and unfit for any other activity.

The draw curve Shooting into the rail with draw makes the cueball path curve. Here you not only escape without hitting the 4-ball by compressing the rubber, you hit the 3-ball at the other end of the table. The 3-ball, incidentally, is a ball width from the right end rail, making it a big target for the player trying to escape from the hook. When laying down a safety, try not to leave the target ball close to the rail. Note the second cueball trapped behind the 5-ball. By using the sink-in technique, from this position you can hit a second ball no matter where it is on the table. In some cases you will need to use two or three rails.

MEDFORD, OR Back in the days of Willie Mosconi and Minnesota Fats the real test of a pool player’s skill was 14 & one continuous or Straight Pool. That’s what Fats and Fast Eddie Felson were playing in the Hustler. When television arrived in the fifties, straight pool took a back seat to 9 ball, a faster game with an element of luck that played better to TV audiences. Nine ball is quick and exciting because slop counts. Players race to 6,7 or 8 Dave Smith, owner games to win the match and that leaves plenty of room for commercials between games. Straight Pool is a race to 100, 125 or 150 balls with no real breaks for commercials and no slop. A player would have to miss often and in championship games you don’t see many misses. Guys like Mosconi would run 150 often. So, for years nine ball has been getting all the publicity. Last December I tried to go with the flow and switch to nine ball. I entered a tournament in Reno and left feeling empty. I vowed to start a straight pool league back home and in January I did. Nate’s Great Straight Pool League started looking for players in January of this year. My friends and I expected about a dozen players to sign up which would have been great. What we got was a surprising 25 members. The league was going to meet once a month every month to play a match but they voted to play two games a month in a round robin format. What a treat for us! The league is handicapped so that players from medium to advanced all have a chance to win. Matches are played anytime but you will probably see the best matches on the last Wednesday of every month at Rack’em. The winner gets $450 at the end of the year with a total purse of $1,250 all going to players and the trophy. The league gets nothing. Straight Pool is back, at least in Southern Oregon. Great players like Irish Mike Jones, Fickle Terry Mickle and Squeaky Bob Hilton are always around. Squeaky Bob recently ran 73 balls in a match against Tall Paul Kinney. Even Tall Paul said he enjoyed watching that. He ran 91 on me last week. Mike Jones has a 65 ball run, Terry Mickle has 50, Wayne Whiting has 42 and Dave Smith, the owner of Rack’em has 40. Some of the finest players in the State have joined the league from Medford, Ashland, Grants Pass and even Roseburg. Lightning Wayne Whiting, 82 year old Dead-Eye Frank Mc Lain and Boom-A-Rang Mike Morang are always looking for a straight pool game over nine ball now. It’s a truer test of skill and all the good pool players know it. So, if you’re in the area of Rack’em some time, swing by and see if you can catch a Nate’s Great Straight Pool League match. Look for a little sign underneath the table light that tells you to be considerate... a league match is underway. Pull up a chair and just watch. It’s free and you are guaranteed to see some of the best pool you have ever seen in your life with no commercial interruptions. Final Standings for the “Chip” Classic pool tournament held at Eagles Club #326, Bozeman, Montana. This tournament was held Saturday October 14, 2006 with a great turn out of 43 players. A special Thank You goes out to all the players that showed up and our added money sponsors. For those of you who might have Mike Schaff missed the explanation of what a “Chip” Pool Tournament is I will quickly explain it to you. The game is 8-Ball, singles. When you pay your $10 entry fee, you receive 5 poker style chips. The format is a race to ONE (1) (an absolute brutal game). Anyone can win. If you win, you stay on the same table and wait for your next opponent. You are paid immediately for every game you win – instant gratification. If you lose, you must turn in one of your chips to the tournament director and then wait to be assigned to another table. The winner of course, is the player with any chips left. I think every player won at least one game. Everybody made money. LUCKY

Some people are born Lucky; some are just Lucky. Lucky Staehly was paralyzed from the waist down in an automobile accident and was confined to a wheel chair for the rest of his life. That didn’t destroy his spirit. He found a home at the county poor farm in Troutdale and spent his years socializing, lifting weights, playing pool and racing about in his wheel chair. Every time Dad and I would head to the Poor farm to work on the pool tables, there would be Lucky on the side of the road looking to race us to the job. I clocked Lucky at 25mph as we raced to the entrance and by the time we parked and got out our tools Lucky would be by the tables. He loved to play pool and had that First games played at Lucky Staehly’s Pool Hall sledgehammer break we at Edgefield Manor all dream about and he had a great view of the shots from his seat in the chair. Lucky Staehly would have been so proud to have his name posted over the entrance to McMenamins newest addition to their list of poolrooms. We just finished installing three 46x92 pro size Madison style tables two 41/2x9 regent pool tables that we built and a magnificent 6x12 English billiard (snooker) table. I have worked on a good many tables from England and they are always a challenge, but this one had me stumped. It was identical to the Burroughs and Watts at McMenamins Grand Lodge in McMinnville and we assumed that it was an older model. The frame was made of Cedar and the Legs and lower rails were Honduran Mahogany. There had been a coat of dark varnish stain applied to the entire table that had gone bad over the years and masked the product below. I did not discover that the rail were Amaranth the wood of the immortals in a beautiful quilted pattern. The foot rail had the Ivory nameplate just like the Burroughs plate but had no lettering. We had to remove it to put on the false rails we h a d developed to cover the Journey to the top at Bolts we had Corvallis with 5 x 10 slate to design because there was no original Hardware so we covered with a false rail the Burroughs table at the Grand lodge. As we took off the plate the backside had the Name J.A. Aschroft. We put on the outside of the false rail and learned a great lesson. Never assume that you know it all. We found a way to fit an old set of Brunswick snooker castings to fill the bill for the missing Aschroft castings and the table became a real beauty. The room is located in the basement of the Hotel in Troutdale Oregon and is the type of a billiard room that you always wanted to walk into but you were probably too young or not even born. As always the McMenamins out did themselves on outfitting the room with all the treats for the eyes. The sound system is great and food is served at your table if you are playing pool. The grounds are Fountain Sink display at Corvallis McMenamins very well cared and there are so many things to see and do that it is well worth the visit. The McMenamins are constantly expanding and Pool has become a very successful part of their business. As Mike says “If it’s fun lets do it”. And do it he does. The week before Lucky’s opened we finished a new room on Monroe Street in Corvallis. It is located right across from the Chem. Bldg at Oregon State University. And as soon as the doors opened it was
packed and is still going strong. Mike always comes up with something new and exciting to catch your eye. On one wall there are a collection of sinks from 8ft. from the floor to the top of the ceiling and water runs from one to the next. It’s the most unusual water fall I have ever seen and I am sure that you will have to see it to believe it. There was one small problem with the layout of the place. They planned the pool tables for the second floor. We had restored a 5x10 Newport style snooker table and the slate was 1 2@ thick and weighs 450 pounds per section. First problem they ran over my toe with the hand truck and then I stepped into a bucket of black paint that someone put in our way. Everyone but me got a big kick out of it. The Pool table slate was only 1"thick but was still a task; however, Casey Luce, Steven Ashley and a very cute young lady Elyssa Ackerman helped me get the slate up those 27 stairs. They will be able to tell their kids how they had to deliver the pool tables to the second floor. To put the excitement and life into every one of the McMenamins they have a Jenny Joyce artist extrordinair for McMenamins full staff of artists and my favorite is Jenny Joyce. I look forward to seeing her at work at each place. She is very inventive and expressive in her designs and always open to suggestions. Going into any of the pubs in the ever-growing chain is made more pleasant because of their work. The Corvallis pub has a special place in Mike McMenamins’ heart because years ago when he was a student at OSU he flipped burgers in a restaurant in the same location and learned his skill as a restauranteur. As soon as the new sight became available he jumped on it and we began to plan the pool tables, the brewery, the artwork and the signed posters of the concerts that played at the Crystal Ballroom, and all the fun and exciting things that go with a McMenamins’ Pub. The results all must be seen to be believed.

The Open division was hosted by the 8 Ball In and Casino which featured 13 Valley tables and one 9ft Diamond covered in Simonis 860. The grill put on breakfast for Saturday and Sunday morning in addition to all their other excellent regular menu items. 2nd Place Stan Tourangeau Check or Bet Poker provided entertainment between matches with a live Texas Hold em’ game which ran throughout the weekend. Friday night featured a mini tourney and the Calcutta which gathered $11, 505 for the open division and $2,540 for the Ladies division. Saturday started off at 9 a.m., after 342 matches the final 32 were set for Sunday. Sunday started at 9 a.m. as well. The final 32 featured some notable names like Stan Tourageneau, Edwin Montal, Damian Pongpanick, Jeff Boucher, and several others that you may or may not of heard of. The final 8 found Brett Van Vost (Helena, MT) vs. Jim Winter (Billings, MT), To move on and play for the hill. Jim won the match 5-4 to move on to play Dwayne Bjornistad(Calgary, AB) who defeated Justin Bergman (SLC, UT) 5-1. Dwayne took the hill in a 5-2 match over Jim. The B side found the other half of the final 8 where Stan Tourageneau(Vancouver, B.C.) Defeated Doug Medina(Billings, MT) for 7/8th and Jeff Boucher(Bozeman, MT) won 5-3 over Dan Gilbert. At the 5/6th Spot Stan moved on defeating Brett 5- 2 to meet Jeff who was victorious over Justin 5-3. Jeff was 2nd Place left with 4th place after a 4-4 shootout Linda Asleson with Stan. Stan won the match 5-4 to continue on to play Jim for 3rd, Stan was victorious here as well winning 5-4. The final match put Stan against Dwayne where Stan had to beat him twice. Stan won the first set 5-2 and looked in firm control to take the tournament from the B side as he led the second set 3-1. One miss from Stan however was all Dwayne needed as he mounted a comeback to win the match and the tournament 5-3. The Ladies field of 55 was hosted by the Prospector Sports Bar which features 3 Diamond tables and one Dynamo covered in Simonis 860. 2 additional tables were brought in to accommodate

a larger than expected field. The Prospector also features a full service restaurant & casino with a diverse menu and excellent food, as well as a live Texas Hold em’ table. Like the Open division, the ladies had several great matches on Saturday as they played to reach the final 16 for Sunday. The last 8 ladies set Cathy Metzinger(Calgary, AB) against Sky Tigart (Great Falls, MT) and Linda Aselson(Billings, MT) vs. Mary Assmus(Butte) to move on to play for the hill. Cathy and Linda won their matches sending Sky and Mary to the B side. On the B side Loreen Carey(Bozeman, MT) lost to Janet Dunks(Anaconda, MT) and Stephanie Crawford(Great Falls, MT) defeated Val Weber, losers placed 7/8th while the winners moved on to play for 5/6th. Janet defeated Sky and Mary won over Stephanie, to move on and play each other for 4th place. Mary took the win leaving Janet with 4th. Mary’s opponent was Linda who lost to Cathy for the hill. Linda left Mary with 3rd as she moved on for the rematch with Cathy. Linda had to defeat Cathy twice to win the tournament, she took the first set but was not able to complete the journey as Cathy took the second set and the tournament. K C’s Midway Bar & Grill

I sat down with Kraig Pauli inside his new poolroom, which is inside K C’s Midway and we talked about his new room. I remarked about the street construction project that went on in front of his location. Kraig said, “The construction started September ’04 and finished in early August ’05. I joked that I knew what it was like to have a business at the end of a dead end road. We bought this building right before the construction started. It was financially interesting.” I asked Kraig to tell me about his remodeling projects, since I have noticed many changes in K C’s Midway over the years. He responded, “The exterior was pretty run down and we put quite a bit of money into that. It had been let go for some time and it is a ninety year old building. We started with the exterior, added awnings and improved the curb appeal. After one of our tenants gave notice we then decided to go ahead and do our expansion in the back.” Kraig was able to do a lot of the work himself and his attention to detail really shows. “We’ve always been really strong into the pool leagues and tournaments in terms of when we incorporated in 1992. We ran quite a few small tournaments in Depoe Bay in our little two table bar down there. We used to get thirty-two players for our tournaments. We got players coming from both directions. The business peaked in Depoe Bay and we both decided to move back to the Portland area that we were from. We found a place in Oregon City and Carol thought it was a great idea. We eventually sold the place in Depoe Bay but for a while we were driving the 110 miles there and back every other day for about six weeks.” K C’s Midway is the most well known pool playing establishment in Oregon City and I asked Kraig to tell me a little bit about how they progressed
to that point. “When we got this place here in ’96 we only had three tables and my wife started playing APA. We’d always had a real interest in promoting pool. I play now (since the winter session in ’98). We now have APA, BCA and ACS leagues. We were a natural draw for the players. We were running open tournaments at that time. Our leagues started to grow and in the fall of ’99 we rented the space adjacent to us. We added a 4th table on the main floor and we added 4 in that new area, which gave us 8 tables. We thought we’d be able to have our league back there and casual play out front. Pretty soon the whole thing was leagues, so we had all 8 tables going with leagues every night of the week. So with the leagues and the
tournaments, we were losing a lot of casual play.” I asked Kraig if that is when he decided to expand again - when he bought the building and what did he plan for it? “Well”, he said, “When we purchased the building there was about 4800 square feet just warehouse space. So we decided after our tenant gave notice, that it gave us an opportunity to add 2500 square feet in the new office and new restrooms and 2000 square feet of space for tournaments. We put in 6 Diamond pool tables and left the 8 Valley pool tables up front. Now we’re starting to see some actual payback.” I mentioned that the special attraction of the back room is that it is non-smoking. Kraig was quick to remark, “I have the building for smokers and non-smokers alike. They all seem to like that.”

space to expand”, I asked. “We’ve got roughly 2000 square feet in the front of the building that is in a rough warehouse space. We’re not quite sure what we’re going to do with that. We’re pretty sure that we’re going to rent it out for the time being. You never know though with the future. We’re going to actually start back on the front half of the bar now which is well worn after the last couple remodels. Paint, freshen it up, rearrange it a little bit. Redo all the bathrooms,” was Kraig’s response. “What about food and drinks? Can you get that back in the poolroom?”, I inquired. “No problem at all. Our wait staff serves the back room and they are dedicated just to that. We offer daily food specials for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We have happy hour of course 3-6 pm Monday through Saturday and 9 pm to Midnight on Sunday. We are open from 10 am – 2 am Monday through Friday and 9 am – 2 am Saturday and Sunday.” Kraig and Carol and their staff invite everyone to stop in, say hello and shoot some pool in their newly opened poolroom. There are more plans in the works for the new poolroom and Kraig elaborated, “We’ve got a few televisions to add and all the trophies won in leagues are going to be displayed here. We’ve been getting a good response. The players love the atmosphere. It’s a little bit more quiet, the high ceilings and the way sound travels makes a really good atmosphere for a pool hall.” The room is set up so that a tournament desk sits up and looks out over all the tables. That’s an advantage to anybody running tournaments and running leagues. I asked Kraig if the Tri-Cups were held there. Enthusiastically he answered, “Yeah, Tri-Cups was great! This last session it seemed that everything worked well. Everything was laid out well. We were packed with people everyday. The great thing is we have the seating off to the sides so that the players in a tournament feel like they have the floor all to themselves. You don’t have a crowd around you and you don’t have people coming by and bumping you. It works really well in there. I think the matches actually go a little faster, the tables are spread out enough that you don’t have to wait for a player on another table.” “What other plans do you have? You mentioned that you had even more

The Fall season for pool in Sacramento started with a 32 player field of One Pocket players. All the usual northern California players took the ‘First of the Month’ Jamboree as the kickoff for the fall/ winter season for pool tournaments. The One Pocket tournament started at 1pm on Saturday Oct 7th with a great field of 32 players. The double elimination race to two on both sides started with some strong players losing their first match and taking the long road to the cash. Robert Aldana bested Billy Palmer in their first match making it a very long day for Mr. Palmer. But, Billy took it all in stride and won the rest of his matches to face Trevor Smith in the finals. Damien Trevor Smith went undefeated to reach the finals. Because of the very late hour, and a huge waiting list for the ‘retail’ players wanting tables. Billy and Trevor decided to ‘split’ first and second prize money. The new guy in town, Damien Overton, when through the winners bracket undefeated and was looking like a lock for taking down the 1st place prize of $440. Pat McLeod had other plans. In the ‘hot seat’ match Pat made Damien work for the victory. The match went hill-hill with Damien winning the toughest match he’d played all day. Pat went to the one loss side and took out young Austin Murphy, who had just defeated fellow IPT member Bobby Hunter. Pat and Austin ended up going hillhill with Pat winning. Pat McLeod was not playing in the finals against Damien Overton. The true double Overton elimination called for Mr. McLeod to defeat Mr. Overton twice for 1st place. Pat won the first match hill-hill (his third ‘hill-hill match in a row) and now had to overcome Damien’s 3 game lead in the 2nd match. Pat fought back to tie the match up and lock into his 4th hill-hill match. Mr. Overton got the rolls in the last game and took 1st. I had the great honor of sitting down and talking with Mr. Robert Byrne, and I have to say he was one of the best people I have had the chance to talk to in along time. We talked mostly of stories about him; who he’s seen play; tournaments he’s played and won; his views about the game; and where he thinks the game is or where it’s going in the future. This trip to Medford, Oregon was not his first. He traveled here 15 years ago to play in this same event. He said he liked the Medford Elk’s billiard Tournament, and it was a shame that state or local newspapers around here don’t cover this very famous national event. Byrne’s stated he was amazed on how complex it was for being a week long event and how many games needed to be played to complete the whole entire tournament. He also said, if travel expenses weren’t so costly for him coming from Iowa, He’d probably come here more often. Robert was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa. Lived in San Francisco, Ca for 40 years, and then return to Dubuque in 1996. He first became a magazine editor and an author of several novels before he began writing books about the game of billiards and that’s only because his publisher asked him if he was able to write about billiards since he played the game of billiards. And in 1978, Byrne wrote, “Byrnes Standard Book of Pool and Billiards”, and sold over 400,000 copies worldwide. Since then Byrne has written hundreds of instructional magazine articles, additional billiard instructional books, went to Burbank and Hollywood, CA to shoot six videotapes, received the Industry Service Award by the Billiard and Bowling Institute of America in 1994 on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina (an honor previously awarded Willie Mosconi, Paul Newman, and Jackie Gleason), and was inducted into the BCA’s Hall of Fame on July 21, 2001 at the annual world billiard trade show at the Las Vegas Hilton. As a player, he finished third in the National Professional Three-Cushion Championships in 1977 held in North Hollywood, Ca, and won The National Amateur Billiard Tournament in Pan Dennis, KY and The National Senior Billiard Tournament in Chicago, IL in 1999. As we sat, he told me about how he missed the old style pool halls, when large amounts of people would gather to watch and of course bet on matches being played. He told me about his thoughts about the popularity of billiards on the whole. Throughout the years, billiards has risen and fallen in numbers of people playing, and it’s mainly because of the low tournament winnings in general. Look at why every other sport that is watched on TV is popular, everyone who is playing, is earning or winning large amounts of money and becoming millionaires almost overnight. The game bowling (a great game all on its own) is ranked one higher than billiards because of the amount of money that is being won. Although the latest billiard event of Reyes winning a half a million dollars by beating Siegal in the IPT King Of The Hill event didn’t get recognized by any of the general national news, I think that the IPT Tour has a good start on making the great long climb of making billiards close or as popular as it was many years ago, but it may take other billiard organizations to follow suit to the IPT Tour to increase the odds. LUC SALVAS INT’L SPEED POOL CHAMPION & MIKE MASSEY WINS TRICK SHOT MAGIC TITLE The 2006 ESPN ZONE BILLIARDS SHOOTOUT was held October 4-5 in Las Vegas. Luc Salvas defeated Dave Pearson for the
Barthelette 8-6 in a tight match. Barthelette and Szywala each won $3,000 in a tie for third place. International Trick Shot stars who were eliminated in the quarterfinals included Stefano Pelinga (Italy), the defending 2005 champion, Andy Segal (USA), Nick Nikolaidis (Canada), and Charles Darling (USA). The four quarterfinalists won $1,500 each. The standing-room-only crowd gave Salvas and Massey a rousing ovation at the conclusion of the final matches. The winners checks were presented by ESPN Zone and Olhausen Billiards, and Viking Cues presented a one-of-a-kind cue to each of the champions. The presentations brought another round of cheers from the audience. In addition to the fine tournament site at ESPN Zone at the New York New York Hotel & Casino, the event was sponsored by Olhausen Billiards, Viking Cues, Aramith Super Pro Balls, Simonis Cloth, The Association for P.O.O.L., Original Italian Slate, Liguria International, Mueller

INTERNATIONAL SPEED POOL CHALLENGE crown and Mike Massey bested Tom Rossman for the TRICK SHOT MAGIC title. ESPN Zone Las Vegas was host to two international fields, with a $50,000 total purse in each event. INTERNATIONAL SPEED POOL CHALLENGE and TRICK SHOT MAGIC were both taped for three 1-hour telecasts on ESPN beginning in November. INTERNATIONAL SPEED POOL CHALLENGE was the first tournament, played on October 4, and drew an international lineup battling for the $50,000 winner-take-all prize. The action in Speed Pool is fast and furious (the speed of light compared to 9-ball) with two sets, twelve racks in each set, the first set Straight Pool and the second set 8-Ball. Players routinely run racks of fifteen balls in about 1-minute and the player with the lowest accumulated time for twelve racks wins the match. Salvas of Canada and Pearson of England emerged from the pack as the top guns. In the Championship Match, Salvas overcame Pearson by scores of 6:37 / 7:30 minutes the first set 8:01 / 8:20 minutes the second set to capture the title and $50,000. In semifinal action, Salvas zipped past Jeanette Lee (USA) 7:55 / 9:13 in the first set and 8:20 / 12:18 in the second set. The other semifinal saw Pearson zap Jason Kane (England) in straight sets 7:18 / 7:48 and 8:45 / 10:47. Salvas displayed blinding speed to defeat Pearson who holds several Speed Pool records in the Guinness Book of World Records. Even then, it went to the last rack of the second set to decide the Championship Match. The Seventh Annual TRICK SHOT MAGIC, which was played on October 5, also featured a stellar international cast vying for $30,000 first prize in the $50,000 event. The matches required each player to execute 2 Skill shots and 8 Artistic shots in a challenge format. Players challenged their opponents with shots of their choice, with each player forced to make the shot to score a point. The players alternated back and forth with a possible twenty challenge shots, and the player with the highest overall points won the match. The Championship Match was poetry on green felt, with Massey defeating Rossman by a razor-thin score of 12-11 to take the crown and $30,000. Rossman, who otherwise played to top form in the event, claimed $8,000 second prize. In semifinal action, Rossman prevailed over Luke Szywala of Poland by a score of 11-7. It stands for “Jump Shot” which happens to be my nickname because it’s my favorite shot and one that I practice the most and use frequently. I was given the nickname after jumping an opponents ball to perform a long bank on the 8 ball in a match. I picked up my 2005 Yukon XL Denali in May of 2005 and ordered the new plates just days later. I played basketball in school and it doesn’t hurt that I am 6’7” tall so I have many people assume that my license plate is related to basketball. MOSCONI CUP TEAMS ANNOUNCED ‘Best from Both Sides’ to Contest Rotterdam Showdown With the annual Mosconi Cup USA v Europe 9ball clash set to take place at the historic Cruise Terminal, Rotterdam, Holland in December, promoters Matchroom Sport can announce the two sides to contest the 13th running of pool’s biggest team event. The two teams march into battle from 7 - 10 December over four passionate days of singles, doubles and trebles play in an event broadcast live throughout on Sky Sports in the UK and SBS6 and Sport 1 in Holland and on delay by Fox Net in the States. Team USA are once again defending champions in an event they have dominated in recent years, including a comfortable defense in Las Vegas last time out. There are five players named for each side with the sixth member being decided after the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship which takes place from 4-12 November. This is in the event of an unnamed player doing well enough in the WPC to warrant Mosconi Cup inclusion. There is one debutant on the American side as Mike Davis, following a couple of near misses,
finally gets his chance. Corey Deuel, who recorded 9 wins from 13 matches from 2000-2002, returns to the fray, whilst Archer, Morris and Strickland have superlative records in the event. The five players selected are: Johnny Archer (Georgia), Rodney Morris (Hawaii), Earl Strickland (North Carolina), Mike Davis (Maryland), Corey Deuel (Ohio). For the Europeans there are wholesale changes to the side that capitulated in Las Vegas in December last year. Only Mika Immonen remains and he will be joined by the German pairing of Ralf Souquet, returning to Mosconi Cup duty following a three year absence, and European No.1 Thomas Engert, Nick van den Berg (Holland) and debutant Imran Majid of England get in following impressive years on the EuroTour. The five players selected are: Mika Immonen (Finland), Imran Majid (England), Ralf Souquet (Germany), Thomas Engert (Germany), Nick van den Berg (Holland). TACOMA, WA City Lights held its second B and Below 8-Ball tournament October 21st and 22nd. The field consisted of (6) women and (52) men for a 58 player matchup. The tournament was set with races to (5) on both sides, evening up the field with a twist of 8-Ball. The eventual winner, Junior Tolentino ran through the winners side to make it to the point, his only close match was (5-4) close win over 9th place finisher Pete Semoe. Meeting Junior at the point was local favorite Jim Boyce, with strong wins over Ronnie Wayland (5-2), Tony Costanzo (5-1) and Sean Gray (5-3). The match point was a show leaving Junior waiting with a win (5-3). The losers side was dominated by Dannie Stewart who after losing to Junior (5-3), came off 7th with wins over Rudy Shaw (5-3), to the 5th/6th a win over Sean Gray (5-2), than to 4th with a win over Eddie Mataya (5-3) to face Jim Boyce and in a tough match eventually losing (3-5) to Jim. The finals were (1) race to 9 and Junior started strong pulling to a early lead (4-1). Then Jim made a huge comeback running the next 3 racks making it even at (4). But with the usual feeling Junior pulled away to claim his first tournament win (9-6) and an official rating. I also would like to congratulate Rudy Shaw on his comeback to the game and a 7th place finish and top women Cindy Sliva and Clara Silvas. Poolcomps.com Launches Weekly Tournaments An Australian online sports site, PoolComps.com, with potential to be the world’s biggest, will begin operating global tournaments this Friday (October 27). The first weekly tournament carries prize-money of US$10,000 and is open to registered players who pay only US$7.50 a month. Many other services, including coaching advice, are available free of charge from PoolComps.com, which is already operational. The new site is a brainchild of the sport’s main controlling bodies, the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) and the World Confederation of Billiard Sports (WCBS). It has been four years in development and provides enthusiasts with a new level of technical excellence in online play. PoolComps.com is supported by a unique, patented tournament system, also developed in Australia, which will allow a wide range of continuous, global competitions, as well as major events such as world championships for online players. Players choose their own times to compete in the initial rounds and schedules are introduced only in the deciding stages. PoolComps.com is scheduled to conduct its inaugural World 8-Ball and World 9-Ball Online Pool Championships before the end of this year, with entry at no extra cost to subscribers. These will become world-class annual events and the 2006 prize pool will total US$100,000.

tables swayed back and forth when bumped on either end so a leg spreader was added and a retro fit kit was sent out to stiffen the table so the sag could be removed from the slate. The kit consisted of 2 ea 2 x 8 with U channels on both sides 2ea U channels to affix to the end frames and 1ea 2 x 4 to fit the long way on the table and dimensions to cut the old cross beams to fit the long way in the table. Dad and I put a lot of these in tables that were in the field. The first of these tables were sub titled C1’s and the Anniversary legs were painted white along with the corner castings. There was no casting for the side pocket, but a dowel inserted to keep them lined up. The pocket was inserted into the semi circle cut in the rail. The Aprons were screwed on and there was no way to drill into the rail to line them up, so you had installers with huge forearms from driving these screws into the hard wood and the screws would not keep the aprons tight. The first time the floor buffer hit the leg the leg crunched. The castings were very hard to line up for it took two screws and a bolt to hold them in place and no way to insure the openings would be consistent, so they sent out a block to insert in each pocket. As the tables were recovered time after time all the screw holes wore out. Something had to be done. Complaints came from all over the US and the engineers went back to the drawing board. By 1948 the DC model was introduced. A leg spreader was added; The casting was added to the side pocket; an aluminum band was put on the Anniversary, the figure 8 nut plate was added so the aprons could be bolted instead of screwed; the legs on the Sportsman were tapered and the color change to beige and burgundy and the name to Sport King DC. When the boys came home they didn’t head to the poolroom but to the Altar and got married and raised kids and got jobs so the sale of tables slowed down. Rents in the areas where the poolrooms thrived went up and the pool tables came down. Things looked glum for Brunswick. The bowling and billiard business had come to a stand still. There were only so many kids you could have set pins and they could be undependable Its time to automate but The Brunswick Balke Collender Co. procrastinated too long and American Machine and Foundry came up with the first automatic pin spotter and bowling center could be seen going up all over the US. All Brunswick’s efforts went into developing there own pin spotter and it

happened. The sale of pool tables would go into these new deluxe Centers like Grand Central Bowl, Amato’s and Crosley Bowl in our area. New poolrooms were starting up. The Cue Ball in Salem opened and things were looking bright in the student union facilities all over the country; however in the late fifty’s things looked glum for billiards at Brunswick. Again there was a slow down in Bowling and people had turned away from Brunswick for their cloth, supplies and tables. In 1959 Dad decided it was time to head back to Chicago to discuss the future of billiards with the Vice president of bowling and billiards Jack Thomas. Mr. Thomas was very pleasant and gave us an hour of his time; however, his tone was very disappointing. A Billiards is dead and we are planning to drop it from our products@, was his answer to us. Dad told him that we had the best year by far and were looking for a hefty increase in the future. Jack asked just how much we had done with the company and Dad showed him that we had purchased over $75,000.00 in cloth and supplies and had been responsible for the sale of nearly 100 tables in our area. We only received a $50.00 lead fee and got the installation which accounted to another $50.00. Jack called his secretary to bring in the billiard sales for the past year for the World. After going over the totals he looked Dad in the eye and informed us that we had accounted for 25% of their sales for that year. Since the population of the Pacific Northwest was so small compared to the world he felt that we must be doing something right. That hour stretched out into discussions of just what was going on. Dad switched the conversation to the success we had by booking Willie Mosconi in our area and his involvement in the upcoming movie “The Hustler”. That touched a sensitive nerve for the powers with the company felt that “The Hustler” would destroy what the company had been doing in creating the image of pool as a family game, but he would discuss holding off on closing the billiard division for a year. We left Chicago with an expanded franchise and we would install all the tables that were sold in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Northern California. How wrong the Company was about “The Hustler”. As soon as the movie was released the company was backordered 90 days, but a new table was in the works that could be massproduced and eliminate all the hand work that went into the old line of tables. Next month the Gold crown.
