I flew into Portland Thursday at 4 pm, got my rent-a-car headed south to Hwy 99 through the rolling hills and over the coastal mountain range arriving at Chinook Winds in Lincoln City. I got to watch some of the early matches involving Allison Fisher, Ewa Laurance and Jeanette Lee, Ikumi Ushiroda, as well as our local talent Martha Hartsell, Linda Carter and Hsin Huang. It’s pretty much like any other tournament you’d find in any pool hall, some came dressed to kill, some were casual, but it did not by any means diminish their play. As great as these ladies are, they can still miss or dog a shot like the rest of us, but saying that, make no mistake these ladies can play. Beauty and brains are the normal not the exception. While sitting and watching, one thing that impressed me was, not only can these ladies shoot, they rarely make mistakes or take chances on shots. In a game like 9-ball, where each player is shooting at the last ball the other missed, calculated safeties are strategies that are practiced and must be executed precisely. There’s not a “go for it” attitude on a low percentage shot. Even the lesser known players possess these talents. Just watching them will make your game better. There was a turnout of thousands of fans that came to watch within the four days, autograph seekers and enthusiasts of the game. As I sat and watched, numerous autograph seekers, sought their quest after each match was finished with enthusiasm and bright-eyed as any child seeking their presents on Christmas or any birthday. What a thrill it

is to have the WPBA National 9-Ball Championship here in the Northwest where pool is the game we love. I had the distinct honor of sitting in the press section covering two semi finals and the finals that are to be shown on ESPN (first scheduled showing is January 4th at 4pm Pacific Standard Time on ESPN2), with a crowd nearing 1,000 onlookers. The Master of Ceremonies, Steve Tipton, entertained the crowds before and between the matches with trivia, jokes and introduced the VIP’s as well as doing a little “hokey pokey” and sometimes even serenading while the ladies were waiting to play. Witnessing the behindthe-scenes action at one of these events is very interesting. You don’t have the smooth transitions as they appear on the finished broadcasts. What you do have is the players being cued when to start their play, a low key commentating being heard in the background and a camera man following the action going on at the table. Talk about distractions and sharking a player, this has to be the ultimate. Playing in the first semi-final were Monica Webb and Jeanette Lee. After the introductions play began. The crowd of approximately 1,000 spectators cheered and clapped for what was to begin an afternoon and evening of some exciting pool. Webb and Lee battled back and forth with Jeanette tying it at hill-hill. And the battle raged on until Jeanette finally won. She was so happy (WPBA continued on page 18)

Cascade-Classic Pool Seminar a Sensation “Fantastic opportunity from those who have what it takes to consistently win under pressure”…seminar participant Art Sasaki
“History was made,” said Glenn Atwell. An idea that sprouted several years ago and was scoffed at by critics came to be on November 16th. The first-ever allday pool seminar taught by several area instructors took place at Classic Billiards in Portland, Oregon, and by the feedback, was a huge success. Along with Glenn, instructors John Morabito, Pat Schumacher, Brad Gowin and Andrew Monstis shared some of their 25 to 40 years worth of skills and insider techniques. “We all agreed that it would be a great way to give back to the pool community something for the years of pool being very good to us,” said Andrew. “We are also meeting a need in the area. I’ve had this idea for several years and it has finally come together.” Twenty-seven eager participants, whose skills ranged from beginner
to accomplished player, divided into groups and rotated hourly from teacher to teacher, where they learned or honed skill after skill. It was a day packed with information and even lunch, all for $60. The seminar helped players with prescribed pool insight into five areas of essential pool information and skill development. The goal of the seminar was to share skills and inside techniques on aiming, banking & kicking, shot rehearsal, draw shots, and cue ball positioning. Participants also received a seminar manual and Classic Billiards provided cards for free practice hours. The cost of the seminar was kept down by the help of the sponsors and promoters: Cascade Pool League, a BCA & VNEA League; Classic Billiards on 122nd and SE Powell in Portland; Dragonfly Tattoo in Vancouver Washington; Bigfoot

Pool Halls - Are They A Vanishing Breed?

Room Owners Show Tremendous Heart !!! By: Darin Walding
In slow economic times, many things may contribute to the life or death of a pool hall. As in real estate, there are 3 very important guidelines to follow, location, location, location. The pool halls financial success may also depend upon curfews, gang colors and the economic stability of your clientele. In some areas going smokeless whether it was legislated or of the owner’s own volition has seen a drop in clientele. The neighborhood also may have changed around you. With urban sprawl, the pool hall may be what now has become too far away. In the 70’s and 80’s a chain of pool halls were started called “Corner Pocket”. With virtually the same layout in each pool hall that favored the spectator and/or other players to view important games, but they too fell on hard times and were sold off individually. The pool halls I grew up in 35 to 40 years ago were smoke-filled, gambling havens, whether cards, cribbage or games on the slate. There was a code of ethics that the players respected. Many of the owners didn’t allow cursing, which caused arguments that led to fights. Some of your owners or employees of the room ran “book” (illegal gambling that the government didn’t take money from). Not all pool halls were that way, some were true to the game of pool, be it 9-Ball, One Pocket or Straight. You came in, played by the hour and there was always a sign “no gambling”. The “no gambling” meant “no money on the table”. Pool halls back then didn’t have to deal with technology. We had pinball machines and that was pretty much it. Today if a pool hall doesn’t have video games, digital juke box, satellite TV, alcohol, food, leagues, billiard supplies and maybe even an internet connection you’re not keeping up with your competition. You can’t attract the players who have the money and time on their hands. There have been closures of pool halls up and down the West Coast and some I don’t know about. Here are a few: 211 Club (WA), Q Street Billiards (OR), Kelowna Q Club (BC), Blondies Billiards (BC), Felts Club (CA), Oakdale Billiards (CA) and Cue Ball’s Billiards (MT). In March of 2003, a movie was released called “Poolhall Junkies”, that depicted violence and cursing as part of its theme. Perhaps coupled with the struggling economy, this has had an effect on different pool halls around the country. Is this a sign of the future of pool? In this new millennium, will the game of pool be relegated to seven foot tables? By itself that would be a shame, there must be a choice – Pool halls do survive and they can survive in the twenty first century. So if you’re lucky enough to have a pool hall close to you, relish the opportunity. If not, get in your car, take a bus, streetcar, mule train, horse and buggy, any way you can, just get there. Kathie MacDonald, who just recently moved from Calgary to Vancouver Island, is the woman on top at Tour Stop #7, November 15/16, at Bankshots Billiards in Surrey! Regene Springett, who took the long road through the B-side after losing her first match, placed 2nd. Let’s Play Billiards played host to the s e c o n d McDermott Tour stop in Oregon. This event featured a race to 7 in 9-ball and $1000.00 added to the kitty. We began at 11:00am to await the late arrivals, this in part to the short Brett Seyler (1st), Bob Ohashi (2nd), John Campbell (owner) number of entries. Almost 48 people had called in to express their interest in playing, however, 22 players paid their way in. The light number of entrants didn’t face the gracious room owner’s of Let’s Play Billiards, Gary French and John Campbell. They showed tremendous heart in making sure all $1,000.00 cash was added despite the less than anticipated field. My personal thoughts are “Isn’t it strange to see more heart from a room owner than from Northwest pool players?” The tournament was successful with or without a full field, it was disappointing to me to have heard throughout the years how there are no good tournaments in Oregon, and when we do have a strong added pot, the players call in sick? I think the pool players of the Northwest at least owe an apology for not supporting pool, or at least the integrity to not whine about lack of events in the NW. The winner of the tournament was BCA Men’s open champion Brett Seyler. NWPA Makes Powerful Statement at WPBA Regional Tour Championships By the NWPA
On October 30, 2003, seven players from the Northwest Women’s Pool Association (NWPA) made the trip to Atlanta, GA to compete in the WPBA’s Regional Tour Championships. The invitation-only event, held on

This month’s artistic shot is from the draw discipline and has a degree of difficulty (DOD) of 9. This shot in my opinion should have a DOD of 11. This is an extremely challenging shot. To set this shot up place B ball by the long rail one ball’s width plus 2mm from the cushion and in line with the first diamond to the right of pocket D. The B ball by the side pocket is centered and placed so that the pocket side of the ball is at the slate cut. The cue ball is in hand or as the diagram suggests. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball to ball B on the long rail. The cue ball caroms to the long rail and rebounds around moving B ball. The cue ball then makes B ball at the side pocket and gets out of the way. The first struck B ball then goes into the side pocket. Here are some special notes on this shot. The B ball by the long rail may be adjusted slightly away from the rail but must still be in line with the first diamond. There is no penalty for scratching. Here are a few tips to help you execute this great shot. I place the cue ball half way between the space of the short rail and the B ball by the long rail. My cue ball is one and one quarter balls away from the long rail. Based on a 13mm sized tip I use one and three fourths tips of draw on this shot. The speed of the shot is a moderate stroke. Adjust your speed and amount of draw based on how the cue ball bends off of the long rail and arcs over to the side pocket. There are many factors that complicate this shot. Here are a few of them. Rail height, grade of cloth, newness of cloth, tightness of cloth, how used the balls are, (new, slightly used, old), size of table, profile of rubber, wet or dry climate. There are more, but my article can only be so long! Don’t worry if you can’t make this shot, I’ve only made it less then 50 times in my life, and I have about 200 hours of practice in this shot. November 1-2 at The Pool Room in Marietta, GA, was a 9-ball tournament open to the top seven players as of September 1, 2003 from each WPBA-sanctioned regional tour. The winner of Regional Tour Championships receives a paid entry into every WPBA Classic Tour event in 2004 – a $3,500 value. An additional $5,000 was added and split for a payout through 16th place. Tournament format was race to 7, alternating breaks and a single race to 9 in the final. The seven NWPA players originally invited were Hsin Huang, Martha Hartsell, Jo Woodward, Kim Gates, Katherine Czarkowski, Mona Remedios and Mary Hopkin. The latter three players declined their spots, which were ultimately filled by Shawn Wolf, Deby Welfringer and Julie Valdez. Kevin Lewis, manager of The Pool Room (a huge venue with close to 30 tough Olhausen, Gandy and Brunswick tables) went way above and beyond the duty of tournament host by shuttling players from the airport to the hotel and the room – not to mention providing a number of players with free pool time to prepare for the big event. She recently took 2nd to Karen Corr at a WPBA Classic Tour stop in New Mexico. And her ultra-fast, super aggressive style is enough to intimidate some of the most experienced players. There were many other semi-pro/ amateur stars competing as well: Betty Sessions, Ellie Chang, Janet Atwell, current amateur national champion Phoebe Choy, Tracie Majors-Hines, Jeannie Seaver, and many more. At the end of tournament play on Saturday, three NWPA players were left standing: Hsin Huang and Martha Hartsell on the A side and Julie Valdez on the B side. Follow Drills By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA
San Francisco Billiard Academy distance of the follow simply by controlling the speed of the shot. In the diagram is a family of drills. In each case, the object ball is a ball or so from the side cushion, and the cue ball is in hand. The goal is to pocket the object ball and leave the cue ball close to target position. You can mark that target with an extra object ball, and the goal can be to leave the cue ball within six inches of the target ball. Two of the setups are shown, object ball positions 1 and 4. In both cases, the goal shown is to get to target 1. For each of the five locations of the object ball, see how many tries it takes you to reach each of the four target positions. Of course, the try doesn’t count unless you make the object ball. Doing all 20 situations in fewer than 50 tries is very good. If you get to that level, place a tighter restriction on how close you leave the cue ball to the target ball, for

When in doubt, use follow. This is good advice for playing position because the cue ball really wants to have follow. If you start it with draw, t h e backspin w i l l dissipate as the cue ball travels on the cloth to the object ball, and if it’s a long way to ball, you’re likely to have follow Bob Jewett when you get there. On the other hand, if you start the cue ball with follow, it keep that follow. If you start the cue ball rolling smoothly — with neither slide nor overspin — which you can do by hitting the ball about halfway from the center to the top, it will continue to roll smoothly on the cloth. In this situation, you can control the

example within one ball diameter. If the object ball is too close to the cushion to bridge comfortably, move it a little further away. The goal of the drill is to learn follow, and you can learn awkward bridges some other time. At first you may have some trouble in deciding where to put the cue ball down to get the right angle to the target. Here is a simple system that works best for small cut angles. When in position to shoot the shot, note where on the short cushion your stick is pointed. That will be some distance D. The system says that the cue ball — if played with full follow as described above — will hit

the rail a distance four times as large from that pocket, or 4D. If that’s not the place you want to land, move the cue ball. In the shots diagrammed, the cue stick will be pointed at D to get to 4D in spite of the fact that the distances are so different. A common mistake that a lot of players make with this shot is that they don’t hit the cue ball high enough for it to have smoothing rolling from the first instant. You can test your own ability to cue the ball high by using a stripe for the cue ball. Place the stripe so that it is horizontal like a belt around the ball. Your tip should be almost into the white at the top of the ball. Look at the ball after you shoot, and the chalk mark should be barely all on the stripe. With perfect chalking and an ideal hit, you may be able to hit part way into the white, but that’s definitely miscue territory. Finally, note that if the cue ball starts a ways back from the object ball — say three diamonds or so — you don’t have to be so careful to have good follow from the start. If the cue ball is sliding a little at the start, the cloth will “rub on” some follow during the travel to the object ball, and it will arrive with “perfect” follow. Are you ready to practice? While your game can improve by play against a lot of players, you can learn specific shots and techniques a lot faster if you single them out and spend time just with them. This month, let it be follow shots.

Spokane, WA – On October 18-19 I held another edition of our class “B” tournament. It was another sold out event and like always there were a few complaints. But nothing like our visit from the unknown pool player. The field was tough but no one was overpowering and every player in the event lost at least once. The player in my mind that had the best run was not even in the top three. Terry Marshall our 4th place finisher and still recovering from being hit by a car during the summer had a great tournament. After losing his first match Terry went on to win 8 matches in a row. He lost to the eventual winner but played great with all things considered. I think that car cleared his head. Just kidding Terry. Myths and Facts: New Aramith Magnetic Tournament Cue Ball

Hello, this month I hope to dispel some of the myths that are being s p r e a d a r o u n d about the New Aramith Magnetic Tournament Cue Ball that was used during the Craig W Rittel B C A Nationals early this year in Las Vegas. I have been testing this ball over a period of three months under normal playing conditions and I have found the following information to be true. 1) Since the introduction of this cue ball many of the inherent problems that were common with the Oversized and the Magnetic Plugged cue balls, such as, untrue roll, wobble, and drift have been eliminated. 2) The new Aramith Tournament Magnetic cue ball weighs .37 lb verses the Aramith Tournament Red circle ball, which weighs .36 lb. 3) This new cue ball is more prone to surface marks than other Aramith products.. However, these balls can be cleaned using Aramith Phenolic ball cleaner, and a piece of Scotch Bright. The surface marks I have encountered seem to mainly be friction marks caused when the ball is hit and skids across the cloth. This problem also appears to intensify
when these balls are used on new cloth. 4) Chips and cracks in the balls surface, which were reported during the BCA nationals seem to have been eliminated. To date, I have had no reports from customers who have purchased these balls that these balls are not wearing well. 5) A consistent rumor that I continue to hear is that the new ball is really no different than the small sized magnetic cue ball. This statement is completely in correct. Thanks to Chesse the Breaks Editor I have been supplied with a New Ball that was cut in half. This shows that the balls construction is in fact total different than any other magnetic ball made. This ball has a magnetic film, which is inlayed around the outer edge of the ball and the balls core is solid Phenolic like any other ball. 6) These balls can be used on almost any coin-operated table where the previous small magnetic cue ball was used. To date I have only encountered one Valley Table that would not return these balls. Tables that use the oversized cue ball also will not return these balls through the ball return. 7) Currently the price of these balls greatly fluctuates from location to location. However, if you would like to purchase one of these balls I would not pay more $18 for them. Recently Mueller Recreational Products has begun to offer this product to the General public for $14.95 ea plus $4.95 shipping. Bagley Benefit Tournament One of our dearest and bestest friends passed away on October 8, 2003. He had surgery in March and was unable to go back to work and his wife had surgery September 1 and is only able to work 4 hours a day at this time. A benefit tournament was held on Saturday, November 22, 2003 at City Slicker’s and Boss’s Office in Redmond, Oregon. The format was BCA 8 ball double elimination. The entry fee was $20 with $10 to Betty, his widow and $10 going to the prize fund. Both bars opened their tables and also donated 10 % of the food and drink sold that day. We opened the tournament with a field of 34 players and with donations from other supporters, we gave Betty $390. The 10% from the bars will be given to her at a later date. A toast was made to Louie by his brother and Gary Miller of City Slicker’s before the start of the finals. Raymond Riddle took first place and took home $136. Second was his niece, Karla Bagley who won $102. Third was his widow, Betty Bagley and she recieved $68. Fourth was Martin Riel. I, Glenda Kessell, can attest to the fact that Louie Bagley, had a kiss and hug for most every one he knew. Have many great pool games up there with that diamond tipped cue stick!!!!! OTB

2003 Montana BCA State 8 Ball Tournament By Doug Asleson, State Tournament Director
Bullwackers Billiards in Billings was the host site for the finals of the 2003 Montana BCA State 8 Ball tournament. Qualifying competition took place on Saturday at Bullwackers and Charlie Browns with the finals all taking place on Sunday. Over 12,000 dollars was awarded to players in four divisions. Out of town entries exceeded last year as many players from around the state competed on this tournament for the first time. The four state champions were all first time winners of this event. The quality of the players continues to increase as we still have not had anybody win the title twice. A Division Men

Cole Dickson of Billings completed the tournament with no losses. He played exceptionally well defeating Jeff Boucher, defending champion, in the championship match. Ryan Grimm of Billings had a strong tournament finishing in third place. Previous state champion, Dan Hamper finished in 5th place. A Division entries were up over last year making this the strongest field yet to compete in the state tournament. A Division Women Sky Tigart of Great Falls was undefeated in the

As November grows older my system gears up to the old days in the late ‘60’s and ‘70’s when the pool table was a Christmas gift for the kids. That was a sneaky way to get a pool table for the family room and pretend it was for the little ones. Christmas is no longer the reason for the pool table and they sell year round, but I still get the feeling that I have so much to do as Thanksgiving approaches. In the old days we would deliver over 500 tables Pat Sheehan between November and December. Now I even get weekends off, and I get a chance to do the part of the business I do enjoy, restoring antiques, build new tables and recovering ones for my regular customers. I just finished restoring a 1906 Brunswick Economy and strangely enough am in the middle of a 1905 Econo table. That year made a big difference. The ’05 had the Pagoda leg, very ornate and stylish, the ’06 had a straight leg. Both were not veneered with high grade oak but were solid Ash. The rails on both tables were quarter sawn oak with Ivory Diamond sights. Both had the original #3 irons. The 1906 had been in a private home for 70 years while the 1905 had been in a Fire Department for almost 100 years. The bottoms of the legs had been destroyed, most likely from daily mopping. We rebuilt the bottom of the leg and re-veneered them. Since the frame was solid ash without veneer and the legs had a common flat grain Ash, in looking through the samples of veneer I fell in love with figured Ash. It’s tough enough to bend any veneer over the complex curves of a Pagoda leg but the figure made it curl in every direction. Since tradition says the leg veneer should be vertical it was a bitch. We pre-bent the tightest curves with a ½” hair curling iron and the larger curves with a 1 ½” curling iron, and put them in the vacuum bag. It is now taking a lot of time to be sure that every surface is tight to the leg. The 1906 had been painted with black paint, white shellac and finally tangerine. To make things a little more complex, it was installed in a basement and the concrete replaced later. This model of the Economy was a one piece frame that would not go out. Not to be stumped we very carefully cut the frame in the same spots that the later knock down models were cut. Of course the reassembly in the Brunswick manner is a little trick to have it come out perfectly. Now the frame and legs were going to be very ugly even after stripping. And this model table was never a K.D. So I found one of the models that were alike (only different) at the Blue Moon, one of McMenamins Pubs. I took some pics of it and sent them to the owner. He liked the idea and wanted the table to look authentic but attractive. This was a 1912 model very much like the Reno table so it has an inlay pattern done in celluloid and ebony. We needed to use a triple band veneer since it had not been veneered before. We found some beautiful quarter sawn oak door skins made in the USA. We veneered and inlaid the table. Since this model was prior to the 1920’s, the finish had to be orange shellac. The color was perfect with three coats then sanded and rubbed out with pumice colored very dark to fill the pores and make them stand out. Two more coats and then the French polish, a treatment that I learned from Sheraton the Master of the Polish. His book was written in the 16th century and the terms were tough to follow. The English refer to the pad you use as a rubber, but the French call it a tampon. You charge the pad with shellac and add alcohol to cut the surface and a drop of oil of paraffin, so the pad does not stick. Then you rub coat after coat until the finish is like a piece of glass. In the meantime we build sixteen tables for the new poolroom in Portland called “Spare Parts”. It will be opening in December on M.L.K., just a few blocks from the Rose Court. More on it next month. We also restored an old 4 ½ x 9 Monteray Mission made by Brunswick in the early 1900’s and a 5 x 10 pool and billiard combination. This is a really tough table because the veneer had been removed and the frame sanded with a small belt sander that gouged the substructure. I did find one little piece of quarter sawn oak. I sent pics to Joe Newell and with all the volumes of information on old tables Joe had never seen the likes of this one, so we will use our poetic license. I am writing this with a great case of Pneumonia, so I do hope it makes sense. See you next month. OTB

In a stunning one point victory Charles Darling of Washington, MO defeated 2003 World Artistic Pool Champion Mike Massey 194 to 193 total points at Comet Billiards in Parsippany, NJ on November 15th and 16th, 2003. This BCA sanctioned event was also a qualifier for the 2004 WPA World Artistic Pool Championship to be held in Asia late next summer or early fall. The prize fund of about $6,000 was spread out among the 15 artistic pool players. In addition, the top 12 BCA North American finishers and defending 2003 WPA World Artistic Pool Champion Mike Massey, are now eligible to compete for the 2004 WPA World Title next year along with Champions from the other Worldwide Billiard Federations. Last month at Accu Billiards in New Bedford, MA at the U.S. Open Artistic Pool Championship, the prize fund was $20,000 spread out among 20 International Artistic Pool Players. Colorado Springs, CO - The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) has joined forces with local the Boys & Girls Club of America to bring billiards to the youth of Colorado Springs, with an eye toward going national. The Boys & Girls Club of the Pikes Peak Region (BGCPPR) and the BCA are partnering in the Junior Billiards pilot program for 2003-2004. Junior Billiards is a five-fold pilot program with the following goals: 1) provide club members with a structured activity that will promote social interaction, sportsmanship, fundamental skills and positive use of leisure time; 2) promote the sport of billiards; 3) provide resources (equipment, education and instruction) to the BGCPPR; 4) establish a partnership between the BGCPPR and the billiard industry; and 5) establish a national billiard program to be implemented in the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Sports Initiative Program. “The Boys & Girls Clubs of America is one of the top charities in the country, and the BCA is proud to join forces with local branches,” said BCA President Skip Nemecek. “We hope to begin a national effort, to include over 3,100 clubs, in the next year. R E S U R R E CT I O N by: Dean Shane Cassem About the Author Dean Shane Cassem Born in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father from Lebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his first cue stick at age 15. His father and grandfather before him had Cassem’s restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb of Charleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. From age 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn, Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placed second in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966). In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the bars and
out of the rooms where stiffer competition would have honed his game. His stroke subsided completely until his mid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coors statewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981. Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80’s, his game went dormant again until he sold his business and
returned to school. At age 48, he completed his undergraduate work in theology, and earned Master’s degrees in Marriage & Family Counseling and Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skills and has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shane has five Carter Keating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough,
Resurrection, Backrooms, Twist of Fate and Trade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate in the bookstores by November 2002. In addition, he has recently created two new characters; Skinny Malone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently, Shane also has a Marriage and Family Counseling practice. He and Mary, his wife of fifteen years, live in Fort Worth, the setting for his ongoing Carter Keating Series. Down in the match to Reyes, Keating takes a break, is confronted by the ghost of old Charley Sturgis, a former teacher, then returns to the match. The story continues . . . THE REF EYED HIS WATCH. “CUTTING IT CLOSE, KEATING,” he sneered. “Guy’s out of time,” Reyes roared, rushing up to the ref, “he forfeits the match!” “Still had about a minute, Tony,” the ref snapped, “get your mind back on the game. Ever Ready’s eyes globalized. He froze for a moment, then turned and stomped back to the table. Grabbing the cue ball, he glared at the ref then set himself to break. The crowd quieted. I grinned. The ref had just sharked my opponent for me. Walking over to the railbirds on the front row, I nodded to Joe and reached for my cue. Ever Ready flexed his shoulder, drew back his cue and followed through with a cannonball-like explosion on the rack. Fifteen balls darted out of the rack and fell like flies off the table into the six pockets. One in the lower corner pocket, one in each side pocket, and two in the upper corner pockets. Geez, great job leveling the playing field, Keating. The crowd responded vociferously. Ever Ready spread his hands and bowed slightly. I sat there without expression. Reyes ran the rack. Five zero. My opponent had flawlessly run the first five racks without missing a shot. After pushing reluctantly off my chair, I slowly racked the balls. After withdrawing the rack, I scanned the crowds on all four levels looking for Elizabeth. My eyes stopped suddenly on the third level. I saw a face that looked like her then disappeared. Re-taking my seat, I sat back and waited for my chance. “Again?” Joe questioned, leaning over to me from the front row after returning from the john. Nod. “Midget only needs six more to win the match,” he added.
Silence. I shrugged, crossed over to the table and racked the balls. Thumbing in the balls tightly, I pulled the rack away went back to my seat. Ever Ready glared at the rack, then me then the rack. The crowd laughed. Jockeying down to the foot string, he examined the rack, scurried back and broke the balls. The cue ball blasted the rack and spread the balls much like before. Three balls fell into the pockets. Ever Ready, initially pleased with the break, watched with large eyes as the cue ball unexpectedly crawled up and snookered him between the eleven ball and the rail. I sighed heavily. A groan from the disappointed crowd faded to a
hush. Ever Ready’s only option was to shoot through the eleven hoping something would slop in one of the pockets. If he got lucky, I was in trouble, if not I had a chance. He grinned. Then putting his palms together he looked up to the ceiling and looked as if he was going to pray. The crowd laughed. When the laughter fell away, Ever Ready danced around the table, double-checked the possibilities, then leaned into his stick and drove the cue ball right through the eleven. Balls flew everywhere. The six speared out across the table, wobbled in the gut of the lower corner pocket, then hung up at its
Part 9 In Part One, Carter Keating, college graduate and former Special Operative returns home from a tour of duty in the Colombian jungles. Gracie, his significant other, has dumped him for someone else. He enrolls in the local police academy and meets new friend, Joe Lauterette. Later, Elizabeth, a new companion, seeing his love for the game, inspires him to enter the Texas Eight Ball Championships. The story continues as he ponders the decision. Part Two finds Keating and Lauterette at a local restaurant, talking about his former passion for the game, and the role that Jimmy the Stick Gadwell and old Charley Sturgis had in teaching him to be a young prodigy at only eighteen. Part Two ends as Keating decides to fish his cues out of mothballs and prepare for the tournament. Part Three has Keating working on his game in Sharky’s, a popular Houston hangout. In the interim, Danny the Brat approaches Keating for a game. A verbal confrontation ensues and the Brat storms off pouting. Later Linda Jo Minard, a local singer and pretty good player, approaches Keating while he practices. Part Four continues as Keating befriends Linda Jo. As he leaves Sharky’s another confrontation almost develops between Keating and Danny the Brat’s cohorts. Later, Keating, Lauterette, Linda Jo, and Elizabeth anxiously await the pairings for the Texas Prelims. The story continues as Keating and his first opponent, an Asian pair off in an eight ball race to five. In Part Five, Keating beats the Asian handily and wins a testy second match. Given a schedule break, Keating skates out for a burger. The Brat’s cronies confront him in the parking lot and Keating deals with the two bullies. Later, someone steals his Corvette from the Galleria parking lot. Short on time, he runs back to Sharky’s and is run down by a biker and injures his leg. A kind old man takes him to Sharky’s just in time to make his match. In Part Seven, Keating and the Brat face off in the prelim finals. After a bitter, intense match, Keating wins and advances to the state playoffs. Part Eight features the Keating in the finals held at the Houston Galleria complex. A tough

Andy Segal, who just recently took second place in the 2003 ESPN Trick Shot Magic tournament to Mike Massey, jumped out to an early lead after rounds 1 and 2. In round 3, Mr. Massey on the second day blew the field apart and took what appeared to be an overwhelming lead. In WPA/APD Artistic Pool tournaments there are five shots in each of the eight disciplines and forty shots total, with 2 disciplines in each round totaling four rounds. Mike Massey is famous for his consistency throughout the tournament format and rarely wins any of the individual disciplines. It appeared like a victory for Mike until Charles Darling made a fantastic finish in the last three disciplines; Stroke Shots, Jump Shots and Masse Shots. In addition to the 2004 WPA World Artistic Pool Championship and the 2004 ESPN Trick Shot Magic Event, there will be the 2004 Artistic Pool Masters Event at the Hopkin’s Expo in Valley Forge, PA next March. Winner of Mens and Womens Division Advance to ’04 Pro Events LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (November 13, 2003) - Bruce Choyce of Orlando, Fla., and Tina Larsen of Palatine, Ill., are this year’s U.S. Amateur Champions. In the Mens Division, Choyce defeated Pete Genovese of New Britain, Conn., 11-7, while Larsen defeated Shannon Condit of Columbus, Ohio, in the finals of the Womens Division Sunday, Nov 9. Choyce will move on to compete in the 2004 U.S. Open Pro event, and Larsen will compete in one of next year’s WPBA Classic Tour stops. Bruce Choyce The 2003 U.S. Amateur Championship, produced and conducted by the American Poolplayers Association (APA), was held at Ultimate Billiards in Berlin, Conn., Nov. 7-9. Preliminary qualifying rounds were held throughout the country in midSept., with nearly 1000 player attempting to qualify. “This is absolutely the most exciting experience of my life. I came expecting to play well, but not to win. This is just unbelievable,” said an excited Choyce following the victory. “This is just wonderful, I didn’t know what to expect coming in. Choyce and Larsen competed with the nation’s most highly skilled amateur players who were all vying for the U.S. Amateur title. The Mens Division consisted of a 128-players, while the Womens Division featured 16 players. As Champions, Choyce and Larsen will return next year to defend their coveted titles. Both Genovese and Condit finished as the Runners-up. Finishing in 3rd Place was Joe Cutler of Bay Shore, N.Y. In 4th Place was Phil Stevens of Billerica, Mass. Matt Tetreault of Agawam, Mass., finished in a two-way tie for 5th Place with Chris McDonald of Dacula, Ga. Leigh Brown of Clemson, S.C., rounded out the top finishers in the Womens Division with a 3rd Place finish. The U.S. Amateur Championship is a double elimination tournament that offers the nation’s top amateur players the opportunity to showcase their skills through a combination of 8-Ball and 9-Ball matches in a race-to-7 format, in the only APA event that does not use The Equalizer® handicap system. BCA Adds Expo Hours! Buyers request more time with exhibitors From: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development
(Colorado Springs, CO) BCA Executive Director Stephen Ducoff is excited to announce that, due to requests from BCA members, the BCA Board of Directors has expanded the hours that buyers can walk the floor of the 2004 International Billiard & Home Recreation Expo. “Each year, we have more exhibitors in more categories. Our members are telling us that they would like additional time to see all that is offered, meet with exhibitors and place orders”, said Mr. Ducoff. On Thursday, April 1 and Friday, April 2, the floor will open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, April 3, the floor will open at 9:00 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m. The BCA Expo will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center (South Hall) in Las Vegas, NV, with educational seminars and the annual BCA General Membership Meeting on March 31, 2004. Colorado Springs, CO - The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Instructor Program has developed an innovative marketing and quality assurance program to assist makers of billiard training/ teaching aids and consumers. BCA Executive Director Stephen Ducoff announced that the BCA Board of Directors approved the BCA Instructor Program Training/Teaching Aid Seal of Approval. “The Seal of Approval is designed to assist companies in marketing their products,” said BCA Instructor Committee Chairman Bob Radford. “There are hundreds of products that claim to improve a person’s game, but some are clearly better than others. Colorado Springs, CO - The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) is seeking nominations for the 2004 BCA Hall of Fame ballot. The BCA Hall of Fame honors outstanding people whose competitive skills and dedication have enriched the sport and industry of billiards. “The Hall of Fame program allows us to honor the best players and contributors to billiards,” said BCA Executive Director Stephen Ducoff. “We’re very pleased to announce that Mr. Jerry Orbach of NBC’s Law & Order has agreed to be the host of the 2004 induction ceremony.” The induction ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 1, 2004, in the Las Vegas Hilton. “We’ve moved the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to an earlier night so that everyone will be able to attend this magnificent gathering of billiard legends,” said Mr. Ducoff. “In past years, the event has been held on Saturday night, when most exhibitors are busy dismantling their booths.” Ballots will be mailed to BCA Business Members in early December 2003 and will be due back to the BCA office by January 12, 2004. U S Open 9-Ball on The Sopranos Strickland plays Petroni for Crime Boss Tony Soprano “Badda Boom Badda Bing” - A 5 minute segment from the 2003 U S Open 9-Ball Championship, produced by Billiard Club network and featuring Earl Strickland and Fabio Petroni, will appear in HBO’s hit series The Sopranos, scheduled to air in May of 2004. The footage is being used in a channel changing scene where Tony, the show’s main character played by actor James Gandolfini, is trying to fix the remote for his TV and is testing it out while the U S Open match is on TV. Episode # 512 will air 12 weeks after the initial air date of the series, which is in its fifth season. Because the season is still months away from airing, more information will be available closer to air date. St. Louis, MO — Billiard Club network, producer of Billiard Club television, pool’s only weekly TV show, is gearing up for online broadcasting of BCtv at www.billiardclub.net. The three most current one-hour BCtv weekly programs will regularly be available online for the worldwide Internet viewing audience. Each week a new one-hour BCtv show will be posted on the BCn homepage. The streaming video will be available free of charge 24/7 to all registered users. Presently, BCtv is broadcast weekly through Fox Sports Network cable affiliates Empire Sports Network in Upstate, NY and Sunshine Network covering all of Florida. Both of these networks are available to out-of-market satellite customers with Dish Network or Direct TV. Digital cable customers have access through FOX Sports Digital Nets Atlantic, Central and Pacific. All channel and broadcast information is available online at www.billiardclub.net. “We acknowledge that finding BCtv can sometimes be a challenge, so we’re doing everything we can to eliminate the barriers billiard fans may have in getting the program,” said Rob Sykora, President of BCn. “Although we have cable and satellite distribution, we need even more exposure to continue our growth and development as pool’s TV network. It would be nice to say that we’re on the Travel Channel or Spike TV or even ESPN, but we’re just not there yet,” added Sykora. “The Internet distribution will greatly enhance the exposure for our sponsors in addition to giving all pool fans top-quality TV production at their finger tips whenever they want it. And best of all, it’s free!” The Internet streaming or iBroadcast of BCtv does not require any additional software or proprietary media to be installed on a viewer’s computer to watch the programs as is expected with the vZine product launched in 2002, yet still operational. Now, a simple Windows Media file streamed at various speeds of 56K, 100K and 300K should accommodate all users. Viewers will be prompted to enter their valid email address in order to receive a personalized password allowing them to watch BCtv whenever they want or as often as they like. Each weekly BCtv show will be available in its entirety, but without the cable network commercials seen on the regular broadcast. Each show is presented in 8-10 minute video segments to give the viewer the opportunity to manage the viewing experience and avoid network congestion issues or lengthy sessions in front of the PC. Instructions, system requirements and other information will be available at the time of launch set for later in November 2003. Jeanette took the finals all the way to the sudden death tie break to determine the winner. sunk the 9-ball only to watch the cue ball trickle into the side pocket, making the score 6-6. Her opponent won the final rack, stopping Julie at 17th24th. NWPA’s #2 ranked Martha Hartsell played strong Sunday morning but ran into two extremely tough players. Jeannie Seaver of Florida knocked Martha to the B side. Martha then faced Ga-Young Kim, who was knocked over to the B side by NWPA tour champion Hsin Huang. Determined to work her way to the final, Ga-Young Kim ended Martha’s tournament run, forcing her to settle for 9th-12th. In the meantime, having beaten friend and longtime adversary Ga-Young Kim, Hsin Huang continued her march through the A side. Hsin eventually faced Florida’s Jeannie Seaver in a match for the point. Seaver, a fearless, aggressive player, handily won the match for the hot seat. Hsin Huang once again faced Ga-Young Kim. Kim came out strong, taking a 5-2 lead in the match. But Huang’s consistent, composed and intelligent play won out, putting her in the final against Seaver. With the tournament well passed the estimated
time of completion, the race-to-9 final began. Neither Huang nor Seaver were playing their best – both obviously tired and pressed to get to the airport. Seaver came out swinging and dominated the first part of the match, taking the lead to 6-3. However, it didn’t take Huang long to show the crowd what made her a top contender on the Taiwanese pro tour as well as the winner of five out of seven 2003 NWPA events. Never straying from her game, Huang began to creep back into contention with Seaver. Consistently taking advantage of opportunities – both for runouts and exceptional safety play. It came down to a hill-hill rack to determine which player would compete with the pros at every WPBA Classic Tour stop in 2004. And Huang seized the opportunity, running out on Seaver. Not only was Regional Tour Championships a tremendous experience for most of us as players discovering where we rate in relation to the nations best. But it was also an exceptional opportunity for the NWPA to prove that our women play strong. We look forward to competing again next year.

door. The twelve rattled the jaws of the side pocket and the five hung up in the upper corner pocket and bounced out. When everything had stopped rolling, the table was mine. I finally had a shot. “Bout time,” Joe muttered loud enough for me to hear, “now treat this jerk like a felon, Carter.” Silence. A low murmuring buzz filtered through the crowd like a soft wave coming into a sandy shore. The field was set. There were at least five shots I could take that were straight in, all lay down shots. It was a matter of me asserting myself and doing what I was supposed to do. Carefully, methodically, I took my time. First one shot then another until I ran the table. The crowd applauded lightly. I had won my first game. Five one. Ever Ready racked the balls. Eyeing the rack closely, I said, “re-rack ‘em, Tony.” And pointed to a loose ball. He looked at me strangely as if I had no right to question him, then capitulated. “Again,” I barked, after the six ball eased out of the rack like a drunken sailor. Arrogantly, he re-racked them again. I went to the head string, broke the rack and pocketed three balls. After making a ball and breaking out a tight cluster, I made the next shot then ran the table. Five two. The crowd murmured louder. A sprinkling of them applauded. Joe Lauterette the loudest. “Gettim’, Doc,” he roared boisterously, “slice up that midget,” he taunted. Reyes begrudgingly scooted to the foot string and racked the balls, then marched off to his chair without saying anything. I checked the rack . . . it was tight. Now I felt focused, as though I was transcending into a zone, the concentration bottled and nuclear. Moving just off the head rail on the right side, I eyed the second ball down, took my time and
followed through with a violent, but level, steady stroke. The rack spread out like a sudden ripple of water. The cue ball jumped to the side rail and the eight, like a proud peacock retiring for the day, made a brisk walk out of the rack into the left side pocket. Five three. A larger, more inviting slice of the crowd applauded. A few hooted and howled. Ever Ready threw his stick on the floor and just sat in his seat. Then, eyeing the referee, he poutingly sauntered over and picked it up. In the next game, my break produced nothing. I sat down and waited. Ever Ready articulated a beautiful six-ball run but on a difficult long shot, hung the last ball up in the corner pocket. The crowd groaned. Joe Lauterette clapped obtrusively. I relaxed, took my time, ran out and made the eight. Five four. Had Ever Ready made the seven, he would have had an easy shot at the eight and gone up six games to three. Instead the score was now five four. Boss had been right. Funny, I thought, how he reminded me of Charley Sturgis. In game ten, I made two stripes on the break, but froze the cue ball against the nine, clustered with the eleven. Ducking the shot, I skinned the nine and laid up the cue ball behind the eleven and the rail. A ring of light applause sounded out around the arena. Ever Ready had no way out. “Devious, aren’t ya?” Joe hissed, a sparkle in his eye. Nod. Ever Ready cross banked the cue ball in an attempt to hit the object ball. He missed the entire ball, leaving me ball in hand. The story continues ...

NEW CONCEPT RESULTS IN FUN The Time Out Inn in Federal Way, Washington had the first playoffs of their new in-house Scotch Doubles League on Wednesday, November 19th. Darren Flint and Keith Ohm took 1st Place for a prize of $350. A total of $1520 was awarded at the playoffs. The league is formed around a new concept in pool leagues and is ideal for an in-house league for players that want to have a lot of fun and
are tired of the traditional travel league/team concept. Although the play is traditional scotch doubles, players change partners every week. They play 2 matches, best 2 out of 3 games each night. There are no skill levels or handicaps involved. Points are awarded based on ball count and games won. Total points earned over the 12 week session determined standings for the playoffs.
The league plays on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm and usually is done for the evening by 9:30 pm. John Foley, owner of the Time Out Inn, said this has been on of the few times he has had league people come to him and express what a fun time they are having. The next 12 week session begins December 3, 2003. The league plans to run three 12 week sessions a year with the summer off for family summertime activities.
Anyone wanting to join this exciting new in-house league only needs to come to the Time Out Inn in Federal Way on December 3 at 6:30 pm.
