Letter to the Editor: First, I love your publication. I was reading in “The Break” about the IPT and the financial woes and speculation abounding about the tour. I feel that pool is a sport that can be enjoyed by everyone and is rightfully loved by millions. What the IPT instigated was a long time coming. I watched classic pool on ESPN faithfully. Seeing national treasures like Willie Mosconi and Luther Lassiter play for ridiculously low amounts was a disgrace then and the money in pool has not been much better until the IPT. I feel the pool community has been let down by poor management and a lack of backing by its sponsors. One company in particular can sponsor bowling to the tune of 200,000 plus on every national televised match... but, in the challenge of champions.....eight WORLD pool champions compete for 50,000 total. A few years ago there was a national Canadian Club tournament. In the state finals in Helena, first place won $500 and second place won an Ice cooler. Here in Montana as I write this, the State Championships are this weekend and the Holiday Classic is coming soon. Both great events. I will be playing in arguably the two biggest tournaments the state has for an entry fee of $45 dollars on one and $50 plus green fees on another. The most I could win in both with Calcutta is still under $1000.If I remember, many of the players in the last holiday classic that placed in the top ten, barely broke even. Spending $75 dollars or more to win $100 over a weekend is ignorant. Chasing a nonexistent payout happens in every casino in our state at one time or another. I know the game is not about the money, but from the grass roots to the BCA nationals, we can all do better. God bless the IPT and the idea behind it. Thank you , Jack Salveson, Billings, MT

WPBA Nationals By: Don “Cheese” Akerlow

As I headed out on my deliveries for November, I had planned to attend the WPBA Nationals the following week. It seemed like it had rained every minute of every Ga Young d a y Kim and by the end of the month, it had become the wettest month on record for the Northwest. Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City, Oregon for the fourth consecutive year hosted the WPBA Cuetec Cues National 9-Ball Championships, November 8-12, 2006. The events started off Wednesday with a Pro-Am Celebrity Shoot-out with the p r o c e e d s benefiting My Sister’s Place in Lincoln City.

WPBA tournament play started on Thursday. Spectators came from all over the northwest including Wayne and Marilyn Boucher, owners of the Broken Rack in Emeryville, California. Players were eliminated one by one throughout the week. I had a chance to talk to a lot of fans as well as Kelly Fisher

players, most of the concerns were the weather and the IPT. There were eight Brunswick tables set up for play with spectator seating on 3 sides. You could sit and watch most all the tables with keeping most of your focus on 2 or 3 table play. Even Jennifer Barretta was there and pregnant. She is teaching her child about the love of the game. There was also an APA Regional tournament in the next room. The ladies of the WPBA would generously spend their time with the APA players and even play in many tournaments. As the tournament field whittled down, play went from a double elimination format to a round of sixteen - single elimination. The Sunday rounds would be televised by ESPN for a December broadcast (ESPN does not have a budget for billiards. The WPBA pays ESPN to come in and film the events. This is paid for through sponshorships.) See POOL ON TV for the times and dates- page 27. In the final four Allison Fisher faced off against Kelly Fisher in the first semi-final match while Karen Corr and Ga Young Kim were slated to compete in semifinal #2. Kelly Fisher (ranked #4) advanced to this match with wins over Melissa Herndon 9-3 and Sarah Rousey 9-2 to meet Allison Fisher (ranked #1). Allison had easy wins over Megan Minerich 9-1 and Gerda Hoffstatter 9-2 to face “the other” Fisher. It now came down to Allison Fisher and Ga Young Kim. The shooting was anything but spectacular between Ms Kim and Ms Fisher. During the banquet there was a new item, the First Annual Tournament Director’s Award was given away. This recognizes sportsmanship, attitude, volunteerism and professionalism. It is awarded by the non-player volunteers who work so hard behind the scenes. In a unanimous vote, we congratulate Elaine Eberly on her deserved recognition. The action started Saturday with 33 players fighting for final rankings and a WPBA Qualifying spot for 2007. The added money for this event was provided by Uncle Jack’s with Electronic Gaming and the NWPA providing the WPBA Spot. This was partially due to the generosity of Jim Lebold of The Cue Ball. Linda Carter donated a vacation cruise which we were then able to raffle off to help raise money for our 2007 season. Congratulations to those winners. By Sunday, the point finals matched Joanne Ashton, who beat Rachael Abbink, a WPBA regular in 2006 playing in her 1st, but not last, NWPA tourney 7-6, Kim Jones 7-5, Linda Dick 7-3, Mary Hopkin 7-6 and Crystal Opoka, herself playing in her 1st NWPA event, who beat Susan Gray 7-1, Kathy Iwata 7-2, Jo Woodward 7-2 and rallied from a 6-3 deficit to beat Deby Welfringer 7-6. This momentum continued for Crystal and she won the point 7-5. On the B side, Kim Jones and Deby Welfringer beat Mary Hopkin and Rachael Abbink 7-4 respectively and Kim then lost to Deby 7-4 to face Joanne. Upset by her loss to Crystal, Joanne was on fire and won 7-2, but revenge was not to be and in a back and forth match, Crystal prevailed 97 to win in her first NWPA appearance. This hasn’t happened since Hsin Huang did it in 2003 and then went on to be the 2005 WPBA Rookie of the Year. (No pressure Crystal). Ok, it may have happened another time. The final standings became important later when a last minute cancellation in Lincoln City had the WPBA asking us for our highest ranked player within driving distance that could be there in a matter of a few hours. Our #2 finisher was Kim Jones and she threw all her stuff in a suitcase to join us late on Wednesday, November 8th. One of four (4) NWPA players in the field, she started Thursday by squeaking out a 9-8 win against the #32 ranked player and then demolishing the #16 player, Julie Kelly 9-3. At 10pm Friday, her reward was Allison Fisher, who ran every available rack winning 9-1. Saturday morning, Kim played what should have been an evenly matched opponent, but the hundreds of spectators, the spotlight (she was the talk of the tournament) and nerves were a tougher opponent. She lost 9-2. However, congrats and thanks to Kim, winning two matches against highly ranked players in her 1st event brings greater respectability and pride to all of us in the Northwest. Arlo Walsman played and won his first Sam’s 14-1 Tournament, November 5. After edging Chris Culligan in the first match of the finals 50 to 46, Arlo the new kid beat Norton Johnson the old timer in the final match 50 to 17. Akio Nakashima came in thrid. Arlo marched through the day undefeated and took the high-run prize with a modest run of 22. A high run of 22 is clearly a bad day for this top notch shooter. Having had the opportunity of being waxed with a 45ball run by Arlo a few weeks ago, I can assure you we are going to see great things from this young man. Many thanks to Sam Rabito for running the tournament in my absence. I hope a few of you will be interested in playing in the new Straight Pool Society League. Hope to see you all December 3rd for the next monthly Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’s.

one handed jacked up (no rail or bridge allowed)to the object ball on the foot spot. Make the object ball in either pocket C or F. Unless obvious from cue ball placement, shooter must designate which pocket the object ball will be made in. There is no penalty for scratching. Here are a couple of tips to aid you in making this shot. Hold your cue very close to the balance point so it stays level as you come down to shot this shot. Align the tip on the cue ball to hit the cue ball along it’s vertical axis, (no English), and use one tip of high. Don’t stoke this shot in mid air, just come forward with your cue. When practicing this shot, align the cue ball to the object ball for a half ball aim. To do this put a ghost ball where the cue ball will be upon contact of the ball on the foot spot. Of course align the ghost ball and object ball to be made in the full opening of the pocket. With your cue ball aligned for a half ball aim you now can use the center of your shaft as an aiming device. Aim the center of your shaft to the farthest outside edge of the object ball opposite the side of the pocket you wish to cut the ball into. This shot takes steady nerves. I made this shot on my first attempt at the 2003 U.S. Open Artistic Pool Championship at Accu-Billiards in New Bedford, Mass. Stefano Pelinga won the event and Mike Massey finished second. Good Luck on this one!

Try Some One Pocket

Email Questions to: jewett@sfbilliards.com harada@sfbilliards.com mejia@sfbilliards.com

By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy I’m a firm believer in trying different games. Each new game will make you work on specific aspects of your fundamentals, strategy or techniques, and those improvements will carry over to the games you usually play. Besides, the other games can be a lot of fun. In a past article, I urged you to try some straight pool. It is one of the great games at pool. This month I’m promoting the pool game for movers and thinkers: one pocket. The rules are fairly simple. Each player gets a pocket. The first player to get eight balls into his pocket wins the game. If you foul, no ball pocketed on the shot counts, and you have to put up one of the balls you made as a penalty. If you make a ball in your pocket on a shot, Bob Jewett you go on shooting, even if you have also made a ball in your opponent’s pocket or elsewhere. Balls that come back onto the table for fouls or being pocketed in extraneous pockets are spotted on the long string. Deciding pockets is more or less automatic. It is nearly always obvious which pocket the breaker is going for, and that is his pocket. The opponent gets the other foot pocket. There are rare “trick” breaks that are not so obvious, and for those the breaker should designate his pocket.

The breaker will break the rack softly toward a corner pocket and try to leave the cue ball on his opponent’s side of the table. The standard break shot is shown in the diagram. The shot is played with inside English (left in this case) to just skim the head ball and carom onto the ball behind it. The cue ball then hits the end rail, the inside English removes some speed and straightens out the angle and the cue ball ends at about point A. If you are lucky enough on the break to get some of the balls to stop near your pocket, your opponent will be hidden behind the nearly full rack. One very standard response for the second shot is to play the cue ball off a ball at about B to end in the jaws of the pocket at C. There is a lot of tradition at one pocket, and if you are just starting out, it’s good for you to know about it so you don’t offend the old-timers. You alternate breaks, because the break is a very important and potentially productive shot, like the first move at chess. Usually both players will break to the same pocket as it is easier or the table rolls a little into that pocket compared to the other corner. If you foul and have no balls to spot, put a coin on the cushion by your pocket to mark the debt. Those balls are spotted as available at the end of your turn. It is considered really impolite to touch your opponent’s balls. (That shouldn’t be hard to remember.) If he fouls, let him do the spotting. If you are playing on a table with a ball return, let him put his balls in the ball slot in the front of the table at the end of his turn. I think this unwritten rule comes from those players who “accidentally” put balls into the wrong slot. If you owe balls (coins are on the rail) and you make some balls on your turn but forget to spot them at the end, there are a couple of ways to play. Petty crooks prefer the “you snooze, you lose” rule which says that if you forget to make your opponent spot the balls he owes, the debt is forgiven. The right way to play is to spot the balls one full turn after the mistake is noted. The wait is needed because spotting the forgotten ball immediately might ruin a good safety by the sudden appearance of a ball to shoot at. (One Pocket continued next page)

Don’t Give up Unless You’re Giving up a Bad Habit Samm Diep © October 2006

Our Women’s Masters Team is a third of the way into the new fall league session. This year, we picked up a fifth player for the league. He won’t be playing with us in Vegas, but we need five players on league night. As an APA 6 in 8 ball, this is his first time playing VNEA or BCA. I’m proud of him for stepping outside the APA box. During league a couple weeks ago, he missed a shot and his opponent began running the table. With each ball made, I watched in frustration as my new Samm Diep teammate became antsy and anxious. He paced around and finally set his cue down and mumbled, “Its over. I’m sorry. He’s out. It’s over.” I could’ve strangled him… There are plenty of bad habits I could write about. In fact, I have. I wrote an entire book about them. Some of the worst habits are anything that takes you away from being fully and completely prepared to kill. This is a perfect example. To verbalize the fact that your opponent is out and that the game is over is simply giving up and I refuse to give up. Although he didn’t break down his cue, he may as well have in my eyes. It’s understandable to be disappointed when you miss a shot or don’t do what you intended to, but I found his display of quitting behavior to be unacceptable. We spoke about it after his match and he tried to explain that he was “being realistic” and knew his opponent was going to get out. I explained that while his opponent is at the table, he has thoughts of losing to them and what the score will be versus what it should’ve been. And, while my opponent is at the table, I’m planning my next move and expecting them to make a mistake (whether it happens or not). I’m hoping they will miss, scratch, miscue, or even trip and bump into the table and land on the cue ball so I can have ball in hand. The point is that no matter how good things look for my opponent and notso-good they may look for me, I refuse to give up. Try Some One Pocket

(continued from page 8)

When racking, put light or contrasting balls in the front of the rack. It’s considered an insult to put two dark balls up front, as it makes it harder to aim the thin hit you need for the break. (Personally, I don’t care which balls are in front, but I try to be careful when racking.) Also on the rack, the balls need to be as tight as possible, especially in front. If they are loose, funny things start to happen, like the corner ball near your opponent’s pocket moving too far and giving up a shot. If a ball is in the jaws of your opponent’s pocket, the best move is usually to sink it for him. He keeps it, but he has no way play position from it. Also, if you leave the cue ball right by his pocket, he will usually have no good shot. If you scratch on the shot that makes your opponent’s ball, it doesn’t count for him, and spots up. Try playing some one pocket for the next month, and in the January issue, I’ll discuss some special moves and strategies. If you haven’t tried the game yet, I think you are in for a treat.

Gold Crown Tables Last month we discussed the big changes that happened after World War II ended. The flat rail and oversize slate on the Anniversary, Centennial, Modern and Sport King tables. The Anniversary and Sport King continued from 1945 to the mid sixties but Brunswick had been designing a new look for the bowling lanes that were now springing up all over the world. Lots of what was then the hot colors. White, a light grey called classic white, Pat Sheehan Tangerine, Blue and Gold. This line of bowling lane equipment was called the “Gold Crown look” and they designed a line of billiard tables to go with it. Lots of formed plastics, shinny castings and extrusions and a round foot on a very shapely leg. My Aunt Olive, who owned Wayne’s Billiards in downtown Portland described it well as a fat lady in a tight skirt. The look was very commercial and it stuck on for 40 years and still is the hot item of the 21st century. The Gold Crown was and is, the look of pool. There have been four major changes in the tables. The 6100 Series known as the Gold Crown I had a lot to be desired. The feet were attached with a #12 screw and the hole was pre-drilled too large so the foot would fall off if the frame was lifted too far and was not adjustable. The company sent round veneer shims, but a lot of the floors were so far out of level that there was never enough. It didn’t take long to discover that you could shim between the leg and the frame so that the shims were not required and they no longer skidded out from the foot. The biggest problem came with the aprons. The first Gold Crown Dad and I encountered was in Lewiston, Idaho. Brunswick had sent us to install two tables at the bowling lanes there. The shipping cartons were not the same as we were used to seeing and as we opened them out came a brand new table and of course we were a long way from home. Everything went well for a while. The frame was the same as the Anniversary; the slate was the same and the rails were no problem; but the aprons were a b——. The extrusions to hold them on were so stiff that the corners did not want to close. The closer clips to fasten the corner did not want to go on and when you got them on you couldn’t get more than 1/4 of the 3/8 head on the bolt. We placed a collect call to the factory and I had my first chance to talk to a new friend Miles Unteed, the engineer who had designed the table. He told us to put paste wax on the extrusion and head to the nearest Sears store for an R4343 ratcheting wrench that looked like a regular open end but had a bite taken out of one of the jaws. Problem solved. The natural slate from Pennsylvania was a real problem on the first models shaled within 90 days as the last of the Anniversary tables, and the company switched to Blue Stone. It was much more dependable and stable. Those tops still survive while very few of the slate tops are still on their tables. Sam Chapman discovered that the company was advertising natural slate, but sold him Blue Stone and sued Brunswick and won. Years later two of the table tops failed. The only slate tops he had been shipped. As I mentioned in last month’s article, the movie “The Hustler” changed everything in the world of pool. Overnight the demand for pool tables went off the charts. Brunswick was not ready for the demand and a 90 day wait was the rule. Since bowling and billiards were hot, financing was easy. It only required 10% down and a lifetime to pay so the monthly payments were easy. Bowling lanes were opening everywhere and the proprietors were also able to open freestanding billiard rooms. The first of these was in Beaverton, then Forest Grove, Hillsboro and finally Eugene. Play was immediate and heavy, but management was not, and that chain failed very soon. The cash vanished faster than the payments could be made and they closed one by one. We took the tables out of the Beaverton location loaded them into a truck ready to go back to Brunswick. The next day we got a call from Dick Arney, the Brunswick foreman, “Go back to the same location and set them back up.” (Read the rest of the story - Gold Crown - Part II continues next month)

BANKS Conventional wisdom holds that the harder you shoot a bank shot, the “shorter” it goes, yet many teachers and instructional books state that the angle of a ball going into a rail is the same as the angle coming out. You can’t have it both ways. In fact, the angle of incidence is seldom exactly equal to the angle of reflection (as physicists would put it). When a naturally rolling ball rebounds from a cushion, the topspin bends its path forward and it banks “long”. Any sidespin the ball has when it hits the cushion also, of course, affects the rebound angle. Triple Banks At the left, the 3-ball and the cueball are both a ball width from the rail. Nevertheless, the 3-ball can be triple-banked into the lower-lefthand corner, which might be desirable if the upper-left-corner pocket is blocked. Use a hard stroke, cut the 3 slightly to the right, and use plenty of right English. It’s easier to miss an immediate kiss if you place the 3-ball a half inch farther from the rail than the cueball. The triple bank at the right is even more surprising. Note the line of centers of the combination. By shooting the cueball into the left side of the 1-ball, the 2-ball is not only thrown to the right, it is given a little right sidespin. Double and Triple There doesn’t seem to be any way to make the 4-ball in the lower-left corner, but it can be triplebanked. Use right sidespin and cut the 4-ball just enough to the right to avoid the kiss. At the right, the 5ball can be banked to a point beyond the lower side pocket and into the upper side pocket. Align the balls by laying your cue on the table on the dashed line. Use a hard stroke and maximum left English

any details of the match; both are great players and the crowd was so transfixed by the matchup that we mainly were just watching runouts waiting to see which sibling would prevail. I was urging the loser to have to change his name. Their credentials are about even; Stan is a pro and Phil is a Mountie in the RCMP. Phil probably wins that one. Another highlight Sunday was an impromptu exhibition of practice routines and specialty shots by IPT pro Shane Van Boening, who wowed the crowd with spectacular bank and masse shots. Shane, I want to single you out for your interaction with the local players during the weekend. You joked around and encouraged up and coming locals

November 25-26 By: Curt Watts, tournament director

The 7th Annual Thanksgiving weekend Bozeman Holiday Classic ended with a bang Sunday as Jana Montour from Edmonton, AB bested Denver-based Bonnie Plowman in the women’s finals, while on the other side, representing Vancouver, BC, Stan Tourangeau beat Tony Ruhl from Idaho Falls, ID. Both matches were decided on small mistakes amidst flurries of runouts; the tables that were not run out due to these errors went to the other side and determined the matches. The field itself was the largest ever for the classic with 44 women and 121 men, both records. These fields were pared down to 8 women and 16 men for Sunday’s finals. Tourangeau won $1610 from the purse and Calcutta of $2215, while Montour received

$1000 along with the Calcutta of $1140. Men finishing 17th through 24th got $100 for their efforts. Saturday was a bloodbath in some brackets with the likes of Jeff Boucher, Kevin Cardinal, Ace Brown, Dwayne Bjornstad, Rick John, Pete Sky, Jeremy Smith, Mark Vinogradov, Tony Weert, Merv White, T R Olson and Bob Flores falling in the mayhem. Including in the highlights of Sunday’s play were a 3rd and 4th place m a t c h between Stan Tourangeau (pronounced torango) and his brother Phil Tourangeau (pronounced toronjo) from Vancouver. Don’t ask. I forget

after matches. Now they know that top players have class as well as skill. The pool level in Bozeman, Montana is going to go a lot higher thanks to your inspiration. You are definitely welcome in the future and will never have to pay for lodging here. On the women’s side were also some great matchups, but the fun ones are always the o n e s b e t w e e n people who

drove up a long ways together. Good friends and car mates Bonnie Plowman and Julie Schultz met at a point where the loser finished 5th. Bonnie prevailed but mentioned the ride home might be a little cold. Bonnie is the original grand master designation in Las Vegas, given when the masters had bitched long enough about having to play her. Julie, I just met at this tournament and liked immediately. You tow also are great examples of the class top players should show.

December 2006 Another player new to this tournament is Jana Montour, the winner. Jana, it was nice to meet you; you’re another great example to aspiring players. To wrap this up I would like to mention a local player who finished 4th for the second time.

It’s only a matter of time until Loreen Carey wins it; she’s a champion in the making and her showing in this field should give her that final bit of confidence and determination she needs to get there. This tournament, although equal in status of luminaries, actually was not as strong a field as last year. I count the Vegas masters from APA, VNEA, and BCA each year. I think it shows the strength of the body of the field. This year the men included 23 masters and 5 intermediates, compared to 33 masters last year. On the other hand the women’s field was our strongest ever by far with 10 masters and 7 intermediates. Out of 44 total players that’s an incredible density. Stan Tourangeau (remember, torango) and Shane Van Boening are both on the IPT pro tour. I would like to single out some people without whom we couldn’t succeed. Our tournament committee of Aimee Neel, Candace Evans, country singer star Ashlee Akey and Becka Larkin ran the women’s Saturday and Jenn Pavlovick, Cat Hansen, Chris Ballinger and Cindy Barbula helped with the bracket drawing and

Page 15

www.onthebreaknews.com prelim work. As always, the man behind the scenes, the Phantom of the Opera who scurries around making the food appear, all the arrangements exist, the drawing and rules, and most noticeably to the guests, the person who greets them at the door, prompting many times the question “... and who is that guy who always tells me how glad he is that I came? ...” Dick Jones, the manager of the Eagles Club. I would also like to thank the other bars

involved. The Crossroads, Scoop Bar, Cat’s Paw, Crystal, Pour House and singling out Allison and the Molly Brown. Thanks, we couldn’t do it without you. Our sponsors, Spas and Home Recreation has given us a generous gift certificate for four years now. The Lewis and Clark Motel and on the other side of town, the Western Heritage Inn are our accommodations. A huge thanks to our main sponsors, Shawn and the boys at Ressler Chevrolet and Jeff Flatness at Rocky Mountain Vending. Thanks, this is your tournament. I would also like to thank a friend of mine, Cheese Akerlow, and take this opportunity to kiss up to him. Cheese was the inspiration for this piece, giving me an opportunity for some publicity for this tournament. Our minds seem to click together when we brainstorm (with what we have left in brain cells). The Classic was not always a tournament of 165 players. We started in t h e year 2000 with 49 players. I had been told by literally everyone that a tournament could not draw 40-some players in Bozeman, especially a $50 one. They might have been right. I also wanted to hold it on Thanksgiving weekend, contending that real pool players would come in droves. We didn’t have a women’s side because it was obvious that women are tied up at that time and would never come.My primary motivation was to bring world-class players to Bozeman for my

entertainment, the excitement it would bring, and to show local players how the game could be played. This would continue the education started by Helena players Jeff Boucher and Dan Hamper, who c a m e religiously once a week in the 90’s to take our money and again, show us how the game could be played. These two players raised the level of local pool and inspired the achievements recently gained by so many of our players. A friend of mine who owns the Crystal Bar going only by the name of Grunch (THE Grunch) agreed to add $50 a week so I could charge locals $10 and get each into the Classic at $50. What few know is in that first Classic, 42 of the 49 players were locals who got in by way of the Crystal qualifiers. We drew exactly 7 players from out of town and three big names, Bob Flores, Stan Tourangeau and the eventual winner Jeff Boucher. Three women played in the tournament with Jane Bartram Plant finishing the highest. I was immediately besieged by women demanding to know why I hadn’t held a women’s field. Starting in 2001 we held men and women. The winner of Classic 2 was Edwin Montal of Calgary and Jane won the first official women’s bracket. She won again in 2002. I wouldn’t want you to get the idea she won because of weak fields; in 1993 she won both the VNEA Nationals 8-ball and 9-ball in Las Vegas. Each year our size and strength of field increased, with many interesting entries from afar. I always try to get some spectacular names to come. This year three-time Junior National Champion Justin Bergman was supposed to come, but the 19-year-old was busy in Australia in a championship event. I would like to thank local cue-maker

Keith Erickson, who gives us a cue each year. The winner this year of the free $1,000 cue is Kevin Davis of Idaho Falls. People have finally started to recognize Keith’s fine cues and jump cues. Our state champion uses a previous Classic cue by Erickson. Our total money was $19,635 ($18,635 cash+ $1,000 cue stick). The second chance tournaments were won by Kevin Cardinal and Jenn

Pavlovick. Next year we hope to increase the added money and bring in an even more spectacular field, but we also need to address the problem of how large a field we can handle. Hope many of you reading this will come next year. It’s always the weekend of Thanksgiving in the States ... you know, when no one in his right mind would come. Chad Sylvester emerged from a field of 42 to win McQ’s “B” nine-ball tournament, defeating Chase Guthrie 7-5 for the Championship. Chase Guthrie was put into the loser’s bracket 7-6 by Bill Anglin in a quarter final match. Guthrie eliminated five players: Scott Gracio 7-6, Dennis Brown 7-4, Don Lundy 7-3 and Clayton Thorton74, before getting a rematch against Anglin. Guthrie avenged his earlier loss by eliminating Anglin 74 to get back into the tournament championship. The tournament’s top female finishers are Glenda Harding and Sheila Moss, both were eliminated in the same round, neither were able to place. The director of the double-elimination tournament is Nita Saddler. The race was to seven, both sides. It was played by BCA rules on 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown tables with RedCircle cue balls. Entry fee was $40. The total purse was $1,900. McQ’s is located at 9614 E. Sprague, Spokane Valley, WA. For questions about future tournaments call Nita Saddler at (509) 891-8357. time winner George Michaels and Tony Chohan. By early evening Barbara MacDonald had run this tournament so smoothly that we were down to the final 24 players who would return on Sun Nov 26. On Sun, the tournament came down to the final two players: Dave Vincent and Colin Mazaika, both local players. Dave Vincent won matches with William Lee, Bob Beaulieu, Efren Saurez, Revelina Morales, and Sonny Orquiza. Then Dave met Colin Mazaika and lost his first match. Dave then proceeded to beat Ron Ustynik to get back into the finals for the double elimination bout. Colin Mazaika beat Daniel Campos, Jarvis Haskin, Jon Mojica, Forrest Roberts, Tony Chohan, Ron Ustynik, and Dave Vincent to reach the hot seat. In the double elimination finals, Colin led the first set 7-5 to a race to 8. But Dave Vincent would not give up and tied the score to hill -hill. On the final game of the first set, Dave had a difficult shot on the 8-ball, and cut the ball in and went 6 rails around the table for shape on the 9-ball and won the first set. In the second set Colin Mazaika did not take any chances and whenever he had a difficult shot, he would hook Dave. Dave never missed his kick shot but eventually gave Colin a shot to run out. Colin won the second set 8-4 and won the first prize of $2,000, his biggest tournament prize fund thus far. Look out Reno, here comes Colin Mazaika. (Final Results continued on page 32)

Ray Lunde Memorial Tournament from: Shane McKinley

A Tournament was ran last Saturday the 18th at JR’s Steakhouse in Marysville, WA. We had a Memorial Tournament for a guy who has been an icon in the pool community for over 30 years. The man I am speaking of was Ray Lunde w h o passed away on June 19th, 2006. Ray was a Ray Lunde g r e a t ambassador of billiards. He was very involved in the APA and the BCA, reaching the Nationals with several teams. Ray was well known by most pool players in the West Coast. We had 32 players show up for this tournament as most of them were special invites. We wanted to have most of Ray’s closest friends (Pool Players) be involved in this 1st Annual Tournament. We shared the company of some great pool players like Mike Stephens and Larry Nelson. It was a great turnout as we cut the field to 32 players. We had several other players who wanted to play and we just did not have the time to run more than a 32 bracket board in one day. We will most likely have a two day tourney next year. Ray’s Family showed up for the event and talked with all ray’s friends, which brought tears to their eye’s more than once. For the most part the family was all smiles knowing that Ray was so appreciated by all. It was my honor to run

this tournament in Ray’s name along with my partner Alisha Rogers. Alisha was close to the family and did a large part of organizing this event. The tournament was 8-ball Vegas rules race to 2 on both sides. The tournament started at 1:00 pm and was finished at 9:00pm. We had some really good matches as Mike Stephens and Larry Nelson were on opposite sides of the board. Everyone was thinking that they would meet in the finals as they both were winning Brad Hornshaw matches 2-0. It seamed like they were breaking and running most of their racks. As most tournaments proceed forward you always have someone playing great and looking for an upset. There were two people on this day who were looking to win, Frank McMurtry and Brad Hornshaw. Once we were down to the final 8 players we had Larry Nelson get upset by Joby Williams 2-1 and then Frank McMurtry beat Joby Williams 2-1 to face the looser of the point match. Mike Stephens and Brad Hornshaw played for the point as Brad beat Mike 2-1. Mike Stephens took out Frank 2-0 as it looked like he really wanted another chance at Brad. The final match was tense as Mike Stephens took the first set 2-1. The final set was a battle of safe play as they ended up 1-1 and Mike had a chance to close out the match when he got

hooked and played a safe. Brad had a shot and made a 90 degree cut on the 8-ball to the side pocket for the win. It was an awesome shot with the tourney on the line, if he missed, it would have been Mike’s game. On this day it was all Brad Hornshaw. He never lost a match!!! Mike Stephens The tournament fee was a $10.00 entry fee with half going towards a donation to Ray’s family as they were in need of some money to purchase Ray’s Headstone. We felt it would be great if we could help out with the cost. We had donation jars around the bar and people donated in large amounts. We Frank McMurtry raised over $800.00 for Ray’s family. The APA donated a very nice McDermott pool cue for our raffle and Chuck from JR’s Steakhouse chipped in $200.00. LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (November 13, 2006) - Two rookies to the U.S. Amateur Championship came to Mr. Cues II in Atlanta, Nov. 3-5, and shocked a field of the nation’s top amateur players to advance to a pro event in 2007. The finals in the Women’s Division pitted Michell Monk of Palm Bay, Fla., against Melinda Huang of Los Angeles. The two were both undefeated when they went head-tohead on the final day of the

Billy Palmer Takes the Weekend

By HARDTIMES Tournament Director Tom Suarez

Billy Palmer put his signature on the First of the Month One Pocket and 9 Ball events for November. No one has won both events in the same weekend in almost 4 years. Guess who that was?... Billy Palmer. Billy took the One Pocket event with wins over Brian LaFlamme, Taylor Townsend, Ed Ames, Frank Nordmann (5th/6th) and a close ‘hot seat’ match with Rafael Martinez (3rd). Chris MacDonald took 2 nd place by wining matches over Chris MacDonald Charles Lintz (5th/6th), Dave Rodden and then losing a close match to Frank Nordmann (5th/6th) and taking the trip to the one loss side. There Mr. MacDonald fought off tough matches with Trevor Smith, Ed Ames, Charles Lintz (5th/6th), Jim Fabionar (4th) and then another nail bitter with 3rd place finisher Rafael Martinez. The Finals were true double elimination and Mr. MacDonald took full advantage of his winning streak by handing Mr. Palmer his first loss of the day. The second match was all Mr. Palmer. Billy won the second match in less than 20 minutes. There were 24 players for the One Pocket event and HardTimes added $240 for a total purse of $720. The 9 Ball event had 42 players from all over Northern California. The $25 entry fee and $420 added totaled $1470 for the players to win. Billy Palmer took the short path to the finals by winning all of his matches on the Winner’s side. His matches included wins over Jarvis, Taylor Townsend, Art Valencia, Tony “T-Rex” Chohan (3rd)(this was a Hill-Hill thriller), Damien Overton (4th) and another tough match against Sacramento’ Jim “Da-Tee-Cha” Fabionar (2nd). . In Memory Of ...Joan Stroud Joan Stroud June 14, 1943 – October 26, 2006

WWR

Joan Stroud, owner of the Log Cabin Pub & Eatery in Sumner, WA, passed away on October 26th from a heart attack. For many people that play pool in the American Poolplayers Association (APA) and Billiard Congress of America (BCA), this face will be sorely missed.

She was an active member in the APA and proud sponsor for both Leagues. Not only was she active in playing pool, she supported the teams that made it to the National Tournaments with her presence in Las Vegas (we know it wasn’t to play slot machines). Joan was also known to many as a great cook, especially Sunday dinner at the Log Cabin. A kind and unselfish person, she was always

there for anyone in need. In addition to being a wonderful person, Mom and Grandma, she was downright fun to be around! Many had a special bond with her and will forever cherish those memories. Words can’t express how much Joan will be missed but know in our hearts that she will always be watching over everyone whose life she touched.

Arlo Walsman Wins at Longview’s Cadillac Island Story by: Mike Jensen

Young gun Arlo Walsman “shot em down” at the monthly tournament in Longview. It was just a matter of time before the twenty-year-old Walsman got to the top of the winner circle. Arlo is a new, young talent that we will be seeing at the top of tournaments for years to come. He plays in our nine ball tournaments on Friday night and many times has had to leave with third place money because of the age laws. Everyone under twenty-one must leave the pool hall at eleven PM. because alcohol is served. Arlo has had to leave more than once and take a lesser spot than he probably would have if he were able to finish to the end. He is a nice young man who plays by the rules and treats everyone with respect. He is gracious in winning and losing and the type of person that everyone wants in their establishment. The Cadillac Island Casino congratulates Arlo on his 1st place finish. Arlo and James Davee were the last two on the winner side, with Arlo pulling out the win over James. James then defeated Glenn Atwell in a hill hill win to play Arlo again. James would have to beat Arlo twice in a race to nine, but Arlo had other ideas and won the first set to take the tournament. James Davee had wins over Bob Ohashi, Eddie Lau, Eddie Carrido, Troy VanWinkle and Glenn Atwell for a strong second place finish. Thank you James for coming to Longview. Arlo had wins over Justin Kiske, Jack Kiske, Al Perez, Don Wirtaman and James Davee. 1st Arlo Walsman nd 2 James Davee 3 rd Glenn Atwell 4 th Troy VanWinkle 5-6 Don Wirtaman, Bob Olson 7-8 Al Perez, Eddie Carrido
