Letter to the Editor:
F Y I: This email was sent to me and I thought it was important to share with all our readers. *Hi Everyone* Google has implemented a new feature which enables you to type a telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and you will be given the person’s name and address. If you then hit MapQuest, you will get a map to the person’s house. Everyone should be aware of this! It’s a nationwide reverse telephone book. If a child gives out his/her phone number, someone can now look it up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious, and alarming. Note that you can have your phone number removed or blocked I tried my number and it came up along with the mapquest and directions straight to our house. I did fill out the removal form for myself, and encourage all of you to do the same. Please look up your own number. In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: google http://www.google.com/. Type your phone number in the search bar (i.e.555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on your telephone number and then click on the Removal Form. Removal takes 48hours. Check your own number and although this may not apply to you if you have an unlisted number or cell phone as primary contact, but you may know someone who needs to know this. Please share this information with friends and family. Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving.

The Fan Drill By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA
Email Questions to: jewett@sfbilliards.com harada@sfbilliards.com mejia@sfbilliards.com
San Francisco Billiard Academy www.sfbilliards.com Here is a drill that will perfect your draw, follow and stun. To do this drill well, you will have to take complete control of the spin on the cue ball. Once you have these s h o t s mastered, you should be able to take the cue ball anywhere on the table Bob Jewett that doesn’t require a cushion. I call it the Fan Drill because of the pattern that the paths of the cue ball makes in going to each position goal. Place the cue ball and object ball as shown. The object ball should be about a ball off the long rail and two diamonds from the corner pocket. The cue ball is a diamond farther back and also about a ball off the cushion. The goal is to make the object ball and take the cue ball to each of the numbered balls along the rail. Consider the shot a success if the cue ball ends up within a hand span of the target ball. When first trying this drill, start with the one ball and go in numerical order. For the shots to spots along the far side rail, you may find it easier to put the cue ball closer to the rail to get more sideways speed. That’s OK at the start. Similarly, to draw the cue ball back to the 15 spot, you may want a

straighter shot. This shot does not need — and should not have — any side spin, since that makes the aiming harder and has only a very minor effect on the path of the cue ball if you don’t hit any cushion. All of your position control is determined by three factors: how much cut angle you have set up, the speed of the shot, and how high or low you hit on the cue ball. If there is side spin on the cue ball on this shot, you need to work on hitting the cue ball on its vertical axis. You can adapt this drill to your own skill level. If you are a beginner, try for just the first seven positions (1-7) and try to do each position within four tries. Intermediates should try to get to each location within three shots. Advanced players should be able to get to each location on half of their shots. Remember that you have a handspan’s margin of error in where the cue ball finishes. This drill is easier to do if you take the positions in order, so for an added challenge, pick the goal by drawing a card. This is the easy sort of shot you will have either if you have ball in hand or you have played great position on the previous shot. An easy shot leads to easy position. For some additional challenge, move the cue ball back a diamond or two.

Las Vegas Cue Club The eleventh stop of the 2007/2008 McDermott All American Tour (produced by the American CueSports Alliance - ACS) was hosted at the Las Vegas Cue Club in Las Vegas, NV, on Saturday, November 10. The $500 added event drew thirty-two players in a double-elimination 8-ball format on 7-foot bar boxes. Tim Glass (Las Vegas, NV) ran undefeated to the finals. In the hot-seat match, Glass (rated a “5” on a regional handicap system used) glided past Kenny Miller [4] (Las Vegas, NV) 5-3. Earlier in the A-bracket quarterfinals, Kenny Miller dispatched Sam Smith [3] (Las Vegas, NV) 4-2, Ted Banas [5] (Las Vegas, NV) clipped Davis Toothman [5] (Las Vegas, NV) 5-4, Rick White [6] (Las Vegas, NV) outpointed Carrie Halvorson [3] (Las Vegas, NV ) 6-2, while Glass aced his match. The A-side semi-finals featured Glass outplaying Rick White 5-4, while Miller was eclipsing Banas 4-4. In the B-side bracket Rick White stopped Davis Toothman at 5th place by a 6-4 margin, while Banas eliminated Sam Smith at the same placement 5-2. In the loser’s semifinals Rick White toppled Banas, and White kept his hot hand in the B-side finals by ousting Miller in another hill match 6-3! The tourney finals between Tim Glass and Rick White was nip and tuck until Glass won the first set on the hill 5-4 to take the title! By virtue of Kenny Miller being the highest-finishing ACS member in the event, he qualified for a free 9-ball singles entry into the 2008 ACS Nationals in Las Vegas - courtesy of the ACS. The ACS wishes to thank sponsors McDermott Handcrafted Cues, Championship Billiard Fabric and Nick Varner Signature Cases for their support in donating “Value-In-Kind” product for this and all stops on the McDermott All American Tour. Billiard Congress of America Official Statement: The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) expelled the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) as a member, citing conduct prejudicial to the interest of the Association in matters regarding the ACS’s actions pertaining to the BCA’s position as the North American representative to the World PoolBilliard Association (WPA). The ACS was allowed the opportunity to explain their actions to the BCA Board at a meeting in Broomfield, Colorado, on September 20, 2007. The BCA Board considered the explanation given by John Lewis, ACS executive director, and subsequently voted to expel the ACS from BCA membership. “The ACS was afforded the opportunity to explain their efforts to supplant the BCA as the North American representative to the WPA,” stated BCA President Ivan Lee. “After considering their explanation, we [the BCA Board of Directors] concluded that the ACS was willful in their actions and we have taken what we feel are the appropriate steps to protect the BCA’s assets.”
J. Pechauer Title Sponsor As one of the benefits to the sport and to ACS members, the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) has been producing the All American Tour for three years now. McDermott Handcrafted Cues has been the title sponsor for the Tour since its inception, but the ACS is delighted to announce a new title sponsor for the Tour - J. Pechauer Custom Cues - to become effective on December 1, 2007. Scott Douglas, National Sales Director at Pechauer, noted, “J. Pechauer Custom Cues sponsors other regional Tours around the country, but we were excited to have the opportunity to gain broader exposure for our cues through a well-known national Tour such as the ACS All American Tour.” John Kittilstad, National Sales Director at McDermott, added, “McDermott Handcrafted Cues enjoyed sponsoring the Tour, and we were pleased with the results. We are now moving in other directions, and we would expect that the J. Pechauer Company will benefit from its sponsorship of the Tour as we did.” Championship Billiard Fabric and Nick Varner Signature Cases will continue to partner with the Tour as well, and the Tour title will now be: ACS presents the J. Pechauer All American Tour! The Tour will continue to feature weekend events around the country open to any amateur player, with the highestplacing ACS member in each event gaining a free singles entry into the ACS National Championships, June 7-14, 2008, at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Patience + Commitment = Improvement Samm Diep (c) October 2007 In my clinics, I always make sure I remind people that when you learn something new, you can expect your game to go down before it can ever go up. Anyone can attend a clinic or take a private lesson and hear new information. But, to actually process the information and improve requires a serious commitment that many of us just aren’t willing to accept. It requires hours and hours of missed balls until we get it right and get used to the change. It will almost always get worse before it gets better. Is that why so many players are afraid to take the next leap??? Last year, Monica Webb and Helena Thornfeldt were passing through Denver and in a conversation with Monica she Samm Diep admitted to me that she knows that her mechanics are not perfect. She’s aware that she shoots into her body but for her to make the change now to correct it would require taking months off from competing and she couldn’t afford to do so. This is understandable because at the time of our conversation, mechanical flaw or not, she was ranked number four on the WPBA. For her to make such a dramatic change would require an enormous commitment. Obviously, she’s an outstanding player who’s worked hard enough to get to where she is, regardless of any imperfections. I don’t blame Monica for her decision one bit. For the rest of us on the other hand, I doubt many of us can say that we can’t take the time off from competing because we’re currently ranked number four and can’t afford to. Making that statement meant that Monica recognized the responsibility involved in learning something new. She was aware of the impact it would have on her performance. I am aware of this too. In the earlier part of this year, I began working with a new coach. With this change came the decision to fix my own stroke. Very similarly to Monica, I was not perfectly up and down from behind. My stroke went into my body and because I’d had a bit of a slip stroke, I was able to get away with it in the past couple years. When I was stroking into my body, there was only so far my stroke could follow through. In a sense, my body was acting as a governor for my stroke. I always knew that it was not ideal, but it wasn’t until the beginning of this year that I committed to making the change. In the photographs below, you can see that my forearm was not hanging directly below my elbow. This caused my stroke to move into my body and restricted my follow through. Making the change to open up my stroke helped me deliver the cue straighter and improve my consistency.

BEFORE NOW Although I’m very happy with my change, it took about eight months before finally evolving into the stroke I have today. It required a much bigger change
90{
and commitment than I initially realized. It meant lots and lots of missed balls and failed tournament results but I was willing to make that sacrifice. Instead of just bringing my arm out, I actually had to open my body and adjust my stance in order to follow through straight. Making such a serious change at any level can be a scary thing. You don’t know if you’ll like it, if it’ll work for you, or even if it will help. But I was committed to improving and truly believed that this would help and it has. I’m very happy with my mechanical fix. My arm flows more freely and my stroke is more relaxed and requires less effort. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I committed and patient (for the most part) because I knew that’s what it would take. PLEASE BE SURE TO VISIT THE NEW & IMPROVED TIP JAR AT POOLTIPJAR.COM. Fundamentals End of Story By Roger Long Advanced Certified Instructor In the past few articles we covered good stroke fundamentals (Straight Alignment, Level Cue, Staying Down, Following Through), and also covered the most common mechanics used in achieving and maintaining those good fundamentals. Now I’d like to tie the two together (fundamentals and mechanics) and explain how they represent what is probably the only “secret” that exists in pool. You know how it goes; everyone always wants to know the “secrets” of the pros. How do they do this, and how do they do Roger Long that? Well, when it comes to many shots and strategies, there actually are a lot of things that pros don’t necessarily like to share; but that doesn’t make any of them secret. Anyone can find the answers to anything concerning the game of pool if they just know where to look. But when it comes to the execution of good fundamentals, even most pros can’t tell you what they’re doing wrong on those rare occasions when they actually do mess up. Their shortcomings often remain a mystery to them because they cannot watch themselves play. They usually need someone else, someone with a knowing eye, to tell them things like, “You jumped up” or “You twisted your wrist.” So whether they do it all on their own, or someone else helps them do it, the secret to success must be unlocked. Now in unlocking this secret, everyone needs to be aware of a few certain things: It doesn’t matter how many shots you know; it doesn’t matter how many systems you’ve learned; it doesn’t matter how many books you’ve read; it doesn’t even matter how many years you’ve been playing - if you never develop a good consistent stroke (which means consistently applying good fundamentals), then you will never be able to consistently execute all that you know. Therefore, the following becomes the order of development that good players generally adopt. They first develop a good stroke, and then they start learning all of the shots. And from that point on, they try to use a good stroke on each and every shot. Even when it comes to shots that require a deviation from one of the fundamental rules, good players will not allow themselves to stray any farther from those rules than what is absolutely necessary. Take, for instance, the fundamental rule of the “Level Cue”. If your cue ball is close to the rail, let’s say, and you want to stop it on contact with the object ball in order to get position on another ball, you know that you will have to elevate the back of the cue stick in order to put some initial back spin on the ball. And just for argument’s sake, let’s say this particular stopshot calls for an approximate elevation of 25°. Now the good player will not elevate the cue any higher than that (say to 30°), because that would be straying farther from the rule than what is absolutely necessary to get the job done. And as soon as this one-time excepted shot is finished, the good player will immediately return to following the rules. And it won’t matter to good players if a shot is worth $10K, or worth nothing at all; it won’t matter if they are up against champions, or playing their own kids; it won’t matter if they are competing in front of hundreds of people, or just practicing at home alone - good players will always strive to follow the fundamental rules. So the concept of learning good fundamentals, and then applying them on a consistent basis - regardless of the import of the situation - is what separates winners from also-rans. And that is the good players’ one true “secret” to success.

Alexander’s Thanksgiving 9-Ball
Article and Photos courtesy of azpoolscene.com
Nov 24-25,2007 On Thanksgiving weekend, Alexander’s (in Phoenix, Arizona) was the place to be if you were a seven or under rated pool p l a y e r . Alexander’s held a $ 5 5 5 . 5 5 added 9-Ball tournament and twentynine players broke away from their f a m i l y , friends, and turkey, to take a shot at Dick Krenz, Dale Teague, Bill Moore a good payday. Probably a good idea with Christmas right around the corner. On Saturday, Alexander’s played the tournament down to eight players then ended the action for the day. Those eight players returned on Sunday. Four players still on the winners side and four players over on the left side of the board. The players returning were eventual tournament winner Dick Krenz along with Bill Moore, Andy Davis, Willie Harris, Leo Satterwhite, Randy Thompson, Glenn Sigler, and Tim Rachu. As the tournament progressed on Sunday, Dick Krenz won the hot seat and waited while the one loss side eliminated the players in search of Dick’s opponent for the finals. The player emerging to face Dick, in the finals, was none other than Bill Moore, one of Phoenix’s hardest working and favorite pool players. Bill was faced with having to defeat Dick twice in this true double elimination event. Bill almost forced a finals second set when he jumped out to a 6-2 lead in a race to seven in the first set. However, Dick was not to be denied as he won the last five games of the set to win the tournament and $710.00. Bill took home $425.00 for his second place finish. Andy Davis and Willie Harris, both from Prescott, finished 3rd and 4th. Randy Thompson and Leo Satterwhite finished 5th/6th.Tim Rachu and Glenn Sigler finished 7th/8th. Dale Teague, from Dale Teague Custom Cues, presented Dick with a $350.00 Dale Teague Custom Cues gift certificate for winning the tournament. Congrats to all the cashers most notably Dick Krenz and Bill Moore for their one-two finish. 1st $710.00 Dick Krenz 2nd $425.00 Bill Moore 3rd $190.00 Andy Davis 4th $120.00 Willie Harris 5/6 $80.00 Leo Satterwhite, Randy Thompson 7/8 $40.00 Glenn Sigler, Tim Rachu * All Payouts include side pots

By: Don “Cheese” Akerlow
The 8th Annual Holiday Classic is now in the record books. It was hosted by the Eagles Club in Bozeman, Montana, November 23 - 25, 2007 and was an outstanding event as usual. Dick Jones, manager at the Eagles worked tirelessly to make sure that everything ran smoothly and everyone had a great time. The field this year was slightly smaller than last year’s with 98 men and 35 women. The finals on Sunday was held at the Eagles for the Men’s and Women’s Divisions. The Women’s side saw defending champion Jana Montour from Alberta battling it out with Julie Schultz from Colorado for the first place prize money. Julie came out on top and received $750 for first and $715 from the Calcutta. The Men’s finals came down to local favorite Jeff Boucher from Bozeman, Montana and a familiar face at the tournament Stan Tourangeau from Vancouver, British Columbia. Jeff and Stan have

matched up before but Jeff played his best pool during the finals and the match only lasted about 40 minutes. It was one table run after another for both players. It came down to the 8th game, which had a lot of safety play with Jeff taking home first place and $1530 plus $1925 in the Calcutta. There were a lot of players that made the trip from Wyoming this year to attend the tournament. “They were and excellent lot and we hope to see them here next year”, said tournament director Curt Watts. I asked Curt a b o u t anything of interest or amusing that went on during the tournament and he related the following story, “Four players from Calgary had a four way saver going. That’s where traveling players agree to split the total winnings by four so they can afford to keep playing on the road. All four made Sunday and were pretty happy. However, two quickly lost out, then the third, and finally only one of the group was left, guaranteed to finish in the top four. Now the first three are intently

Molly Brown, Scoop, Crystal and of course, the Eagles. Dick Jones deserves the biggest thanks. He does everything and sets the plate for the whole tournament from getting all the food together, taking care of all the little details (like index cards for the Calcutta), meeting and greeting the players and making sure everyone has a good time. Leland Flint ran the Women’s division and was a huge help. He was assisted by Becka Larkin (our roving OTBnTV reporter), Candice Evans, and on Sunday by Barb Walker. Hing Tsang took care of the bracket at the Cats Paw and also computerized the Calcutta. Thanks should also be given to the ladies at the Eagles Club who prepared the food with the proceeds going to charity. The owner of the Crystal Bar, Grunch, has been very supportive of the Holiday Classic since the very beginning and Curt credits Grunch by saying, “We wouldn’t have a tournament if it wasn’t for the support of the Crystal Bar. Grunch should be put in the hall of fame.” All the volunteers are what help keep the tournament running smoothly and are to be commended for their efforts. Keith Erickson donated a $1500 custom cue which was given away and also had a tournament special

Four players competed on each team in two different events, an open division and a mixed division (2 men and 2 women). Last years open division champions, Jim Winter, Jeff Boucher, Seth King and Jason Dawes, successfully defended their title by edging the runnerups, Khan Tran, Cole Dixon, Doug Medina and AJ Martino. The mixed division crowned a new State Champion Team, Wade Hudson, Nick Carlson, Jennifer Pavlovick and Candice Evans, who defeated, Carl Higgins, Art St. Germaine, Jan Higgins and Stephanie Crawford in the championship match. Jeff Boucher continued his fine play in the tournament going undefeated to

RENO WARM-UP Mountain View, CA November 24-25, 2007 California Billiard Club hosted it’s 20th semi-annual Reno Warm Up USPPA Tournament. With $1000 added money 101 players of all levels showed up to compete for their share of $7060 in prize money in this first class event. The field of players was narrowed down to the last 24 players on Saturday to get into the money round on Sunday. Deo Alpajora (135) and Marshall Williams (108) faced off in the hot seat match with Deo winning 8 to 3. Tinsley Johnson (105) and Marshall on the one loss side played to have a shot at Deo with Tinsley taking it down 8 to 6. In the finals Tinsley beat Deo in the first set 8 to 5. In the second set Tinsley jumped out to a 7-4 lead when out of nowhere Deo is running out but misses the 9-ball very badly, but gets it to go in around the table 4 rails into the side pocket. Deo then wins the next 2 games to go hill hill for the $2000 first place prize. Then with ball in hand after Deo scratches on the break Tinsley hangs up the 3-ball in the upper left corner. Deo has a fairly easy out but gets funny shape on the 8-ball, where after looking at it for a few minutes fires it in going 4 rails to get straight in on the 9-ball in the side pocket. Congrats to Deo and Tinsley for a well played tournament. Special thanks to Kevin McClain and Alan Sutton (GOLD RUSH CUES) for raffling off a $1200 cue just for playing in the tournament. Congrats to Bryce Leong for winning the cue. 1st $2000 Deo Alpajora (135) 2nd $1260 Tinsley Johnson (105) 3rd $700 Marshall Williams (108) 4th $500 Jonny Warren (90) 5-6 $300 Jordan Beers (95), Alex Bradley (75) 7-8 $200 Jeff Gregory (99), Rick Smith (55) 9-12 $150 Nick Mendoza (78), CraigOden (90) Tony Annigoni (150), Justin Abraham (55) 13-16 $100 Wei Ni (80), EZ Wadsworth (77), Billy Plamer (168) Carl Wilson Jr (105) 17-24 $75 Josh Edgar (80), Yao Chuang (76), Rylan Hartnett (72) Nick Callado (84), Austin Murphy (122) , Bee Davison (80) Denzel Suntay (50) Joe Palley (90)

Malarkey’s Pool & Brew (formerly City Lights Billiards) in Tacoma, WA held its annual Thanksgiving Open 9 Ball Tournament on November 24th and 25th. The field was full at 64 players from Canada and Washington playing modified Texas Express with races to 7 on the A side and 5 on the B side. Leading off was Tacoma’s Jay Siongco, who quickly dispatched John Horsfall (7-6). Even though the match went hillhill, Jay was still able to keep his breaks in check and play safe when need be. Junior Sardoncillo quickly handed Jay his next match (7-2). Then Malarkey’s own Scott Thurston threw a curve, but his play came up dry losing to Jay (76). Then in the money matches Leroy JD with Andy Ruth Dorsey took the easy way out and failed letting Jay once again slip by (9-8). The next match featured a local favorite, Rich “The Hat” Geiler, but Jay was too much and sent Rich, who had mostly played through the brackets, packing to the B side. In the end and at the point, Dan Louie showed what a seasoned and always threatening player he is sending Jay waiting in 3rd for the winner of the B side (9-3). The top half of the B side was run early on by JD, after falling to Dan Louie on the A side. He set out on a mission beating last years 3rd place finisher Sergio Tristan (5-2), Jing Gicoso (7-3), Tim Paget (7-3), Treon (7-0), “The Hat” (7-5), New York Frank (7-4) and Jay Siongco (7-4), only to face a rematch with Dan Louie for the championship match. The bottom half of the B side was equally controlled by at first Bill Coats who dispatched Karl Kalama (5-2), Brandon Apodaca (5-3), Scott Nelson (5-3), Don Wirtiman (5-3) before finally giving his reign to Jeff Jimenez falling (3-7) in the first money match. Then Jeff was met with a blockade of strong breaks from New York Frank who soundly defeated Kevin Fong (7-4), Jeff Jimenez (7-1), Ed Hobbs (7-3) before coming up dry to the top half’s J.D. (7-4). The championship match was a show of true safeties and smart mental pool. JD started off early up (8-3), but Dan stormed back to make it (8-5), then (87), but on the next rack Dan came up dry and in seizing the opportunity took an early three nine to make it (9-7). The next rack JD broke and ran to make it hill - 7, and in the true form broke and ran to win the Malarkey’s Thanksgiving 9 Ball Open. 1st $1100 J.D. 2nd $ 700 Dan Louie 3rd $ 450 Jay Siongco 4th $ 270 New York Frank Bess 5th $ 150 Ed Hobbs, Rich Geiler 7th $ 95 Jeff Jimenez, Treon 9th $ 75 Tim Paget, Robert Colby, Leroy Dorsey, Kevin Fong 13th Bill Coats, Scott Thurston, Jing Gicoso, Pat Vice Top woman - Andrea Saenz-Maes $ 50

‘Shootout’ Successful Over 100 take part in the 9th annual eight-ball tournament
By Matt Mullally Pierce County Tribune Editor - Rugby, ND
The Northern Lights Shootout was held a month earlier than in previous years, but the results were the same, according to Mark Hamilton, tournament coordinator. “We had a good turnout of players, actually a little higher on the men’s side, and all in all, things went smoothly,” he said. “We even finished a little earlier than in past years.” The ninth annual Rugby eightball tournament was held Nov. 1518 - about a month earlier due to scheduling conflicts with reserving pool tables. However, that date change will likely prove beneficial in the longMarc Oeschlager term. “The weather conditions were nice,” he said. “Weather is always a concern, especially since we have a lot of our players coming from far away. Holding the tournament in November (as opposed to early December) gives us a better chance of having decent weather.” Hamilton said the tournament will likely stick with the November date again next year. Repeat winners This year’s tournament featured repeat winners on both on the men’s and women’s sides. Marc Oeschlager of Fargo Jana Montour captured the men’s title, earning $3,000. Oeschlager won the inaugural tournament in 1999, and his victory snapped a streak of six straight years where the title went to a player from Canada. There were 101 competing in the men¹s draw, and the payout was for
the top 32 finishers. For the second year in a row, the top local finisher was Layne Opstedal of rural Rugby. He finished in the 17th through 24th spot, Hamilton said. The consolation title went to John Traverse of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Jana Montour of Saskatchewan claimed the women’s top prize. She took home $800. Montour was champion in 2004. There were 16 competing in the women’s tournament. Prior to the eight-ball
Stan Tourangeau
tournament, the second Geographical Center Cup nineball tournament, was held. The event had 16 Canadians and 16 American players squaring off. This year’s champion was Stan Tourangeau of Vancouver, BC. He earned $1,000. A number of participants again came from north of the border, but other players came from Minnesota, South Dakota and Montana, as well as from around the state. Hamilton said the John Traverse number of local players competing was down slightly. He speculated that could have been due to deer hunting season. The tournament was a boost for many local businesses, including motels, restaurants, gas stations and bars. Hamilton said the event would not be possible without the support of the community, including volunteers. “We heard a lot of positive comments from players about the tournament and the community,” he said. This was the second year the Geographical Center Chamber of Commerce had coordinated the tournament. Player Profile: Claudia Shultz
Last time we spent time honoring one of our best shooters in our local pool scene. Shawn Modelo has excelled in the game of pool and has accomplished many tittles and top prices in our leagues. Today we want to highlight another great contributor to our leagues and another veteran of the game of billiards. Claudia Shultz was first introduced to pool in 1990. She started playing pool in 1991 and fell in love Claudia Shultz with the game right away. She didn’t start playing seriously, with knowledge and strategy until 1997. It was then that she decided she wanted to become a competitive pool player so she took lesson and began to read books. She might not have victories and titles as some of our other veteran’s players do; however her commitment to the game of pool and desire to be an active member of our DVPool Leagues is as strong as anyone else. Her teams are not loaded with top shooters but new talent who are eager to play but have limited knowledge of the game. They are the players of tomorrow, if they stick to the game, of course. Claudia has had to deal with a lot of health issues which have taken her out the game off and on and onto recovery. Claudia, however has found other ways to stay connected to the game she so much enjoys, and started making pool ornaments, and items that pool players love. Her creative way has brought her full circle and she now has a full jewelry business which includes earrings, necklaces, rings and of course billiard items. Claudia has been to Las Vegas to compete in the National of the amateurs twice. “It’s such a great experience....much different than playing at home. The mind set for me is very different. I’m usually pretty generous with my foul calls and such at home....not so there....it’s definitely a different level of play”. She attended her first Expo event where she had her own booth, two years ago and has managed to make a name for her self with her jewelry. Not only is Claudia quite the competitor, she is fair, honest and a great lady. Her input as a league member and captain of her teams is valuable, and her contribution within our local scene as a pool player and /or a designer is welcomed everywhere. Let us wish her a speedy recovery from her last surgery, as well as much luck in her business endeavors.

October & November Monthly Results
Sacramento CA By Tom Suarez Tournament Director October and November Monthly Tournaments at Hard Times Billiards Sacramento CA. The October First Weekend of the Month tournament One Pocket and 9 Ball events had a great turnout. Fall has come and it is bringing in the pool players from the outdoor summer activities. Thirty Two players played in the One Pocket event vying for their piece of the $940 prize fund. The tournament winners had a local Sacramento theme. Seven out of the top 8 finishers were local players. Pat McLeod went undefeated on the winners side only losing ONE Game on his way to the Hot Seat. Pat defeated Bob B, James Williams, Jim Fabionar (4th) Chris MacDonald (2nd) and Tony Melindez (3rd). Pat’s opponent for the Hot Seat match was Tony Melindez. Mr. Melindez defeated Jay G, Bill D, Gilbert Arellano, Kevin (7th), then Pat McLeod lost to Pat McLeod. Tony then played Chris MacDonald for the finals of the one loss side. Chris MacDonald defeated Mike DeWeese, Frank Nordmann, Bob B and then lost to Pat McLeod to get sent to the one loss side. Chris then defeated Robert Aldana (5th), Jim Fabionar (4th) and Tony Melindez (3rd) to face Pat McLeod in the true Double Elimination finals. Pat McLeod took first place and the $300 prize. $300 Pat McLeod 1st $200 Chris MacDonald 2 nd $140 Tony Melindez 3 rd $100 Jim Fabionar 4 th 5/6 $60 Kevin and Robert Aldana 7/8 $40 Ralph Daloian and Bart Mahoney The 9 Ball event had 54 entries for a total of $1850 in prize money. Not bad for a one day event. We started at 1:10pm and the finals were at 9:30. A race to 6 on the winners side and a race to 4 on the one loss side with players raring and ready to play kept a quick pace for the entire tournament. Carl Wilson and Marshall Williams met in the finals and it was apparent that Carl was the superior player for this particular final match. It was all Carl and he took the $500 first place prize while Marshall settled for 2nd and $300. Carl went undefeated into the finals winning matches over Tommy Soria 6-1, Jun Almoite 6-4 (9th), Deo Alpajora 6-5 (9th), Greg Furuta 6-1 (5th), and then won a tough match against Robert Aldana 6-4. Robert Aldana won his winner’s side matches over Patrick Rhea 6-4, Roberto Martinez 6-4 (9th), Mike Spinola 6-2, Pat McLeod 6-1 and Frank Nordmann 6-3. Mr. Aldana then met Marshall Williams in the finals of the One loss bracket and it went Hill-Hill with Marshall making the 9 on the break on the final game of the match. Carl and Marshall’s final match up of the day was shortened by Marshall offering to split with the majority of the money going to Carl. Carl took 1st place with Marshall taking the runner-up spot. Oct 7th Sunday First of the Month 9 Ball event $25 entry fee with $500 added for 50 or more players Total prize fund was $1850.00 $500 Carl Wilson 1st
