Northern Lights Shootout recap By Matthew Mullally, Pierce County Tribune RUGBY, N.D. - Perhaps it was fitting the two players with the most success at the Northern Lights Shootout would meet in the eight-ball tournament¹s final match. Fargo’s Marc Oelslager and Stan Tourangeau, of Vancouver, BC, both had a pair of tournament titles to their credit over the past nine years. Now, Oelslager can claim one more. The 43year-old defeated Tourangeau 6-0 in the raceto-six championship match, claiming the $4,000 first prize on Nov. 23 at the Rugby Armory. He won his first two matches to get into the round of 32 and then won six more to complete the three-day event with an undefeated mark. Oelslager won the inaugural tournament in 1999 and again last year. The Rugby event features a strong field, is well-run, and its proximity to Fargo (about three and a half hours away) makes it a favorite for Oelslager. And now he can lay claim to being the tournament¹s only three-time champion. “It’s a great event and one I look forward to competing in,” he said.

DIEP

WINS WOMEN’S CROWN

On the women’s tournament, Samm Diep of Colorado captured the $1,000 first prize in the women’s draw, which featured just 10 players this year. She won four matches to claim her first title. Julie Brunelle of Belcourt was again runner-up. Rachel Wentz, formerly of the Rugby area, was third.

BEARDY WINS INTERNATIONAL CUP The third International Cup 9-ball challenge preceded the Shootout. Twenty American players and 12 from Canada took part in the tournament. The champion was Felix Beardy of Winnipeg, MB. He won the $1,000 first prize. The top six players received a cash payout. There were 71 men and 10 women in the tournament field, which was significantly fewer than past tournaments. Mark Hamilton, tournament coordinator, said a couple of large tournaments going on in the region were a factor in taking away some top regional players. Nevertheless, the tournament did have its fair share of top players, including some from north of the border. Hamilton said about one-half of the field was from Canada. Hamilton said tournament officials will determine whether to move the tournament back to mid-December. The first eight years

it was held at that time. That may provide fewer scheduling conflicts with other tournaments. The event is sponsored by the Rugby Geographical Center Chamber of Commerce with the help of several other local and area sponsors. Hamilton said those businesses which again supported the tournament deserve the credit. “They help make this a go every year.”

OELSLAGER FEATURE STORY Feeling right at home - Oeslager has enjoyed much success at ‘Shootout’ By Matthew Mullally, Pierce County Tribune RUGBY, N.D. - It was a bowling alley, of all places, where Marc Oelslager, of Fargo, N.D. learned at an early age he had a talent for pool. “I was in a youth bowling league, and there were a couple of (pool) tables there. We would play while waiting for rides home,” Oelslager recalls. “We would play for quarters, and often I¹d come home with a pocket full of them.” These days the 43-year-old has walked away from the pool table with much more. Oelslager captured his third Northern Lights Shootout title on Nov. 23 in Rugby, becoming the tournament’s only three-time champion. He won the inaugural ‘Shootout’ in 1999 and again in 2007 and was runner-up another time. “There is always a strong field here with a number of pro-level players competing,” he said.

“I look forward to coming, especially since it’s close to home,” Oelslager said. Entering an established, well-known tournament like the Northern Lights Shootout means the field will include a number of talented players, he said. “In a field like this there are up to a dozen guys who have a good shot at winning,” Marc said. Of course, there is always that possibility of an underdog who gets hot, but usually talent and experience win out. And the players with both rise to the top. Marc’s not only been a six-time participant in the event, he’s also helped tournament officials by running the past two Calcutta tournaments held at the same time. “We appreciate him taking time out to do that,” says Mark Hamilton, tournament coordinator. “Marc is always wanting to promote the game.” Although Marc doesn’t devote as much time to his game as he once did, noting his commitments to his business and family, he said experience makes up for some of that time away from the table. “When you’ve played in a number of tournaments, you don’t get as nervous,” he said. “You have that past experience to draw from.” (continued on page 26)

Working with Banks

San Francisco Billiard Academy www.sfbilliards.com

By: Bob Jewett

Do you have a problem with your banking? Do the object balls seem to come off the cushions inconsistently for you? Here are some tools to help you improve your oneBob Jewett cushion banking game. (For a basic, accurate banking system, see my May 2006 column which is available on onthebreaknews.com just click on past issues) First you should understand that banking is more of an art than a science. While systems may help you become consistent faster, there are so many effects involved in banking that you will have to develop your feel as much as your knowledge. The knowledge, such as systems or the items below, will give you a way to shoot the bank, but then it will be up to your feel gained from experience to make the ball. Use the Force. The first thing to note is that the angle into the rail is almost never equal to the angle out of the rail. This bogus assumption is behind the various “mirror,” “double the diamond” and crossing lines systems. (The last one is diagrammed in Willie Mosconi’s 1965 book.) Speed changes everything, usually. To see this, set up Shot A to bank the ball off the side cushion to pocket A. Note that the object ball is on the line about a diamond from the cushion. Begin with the cue ball set up for a more or less full hit on the object ball. Make a trial shot with just enough speed on the object ball to get it to the pocket. Based on that test, try to pick a distant target — a chair, the edge of another table, a spot on the floor — that gives a target for the slow, straight shot. You could also use the adjustable target I mentioned in my

previous article — a ball on a barstool, which is just the right height for aiming. How consistently can you make the shot? Do you always get the shot within a ball of the pocket? If you can’t do that with a known target and cue ball in hand, you need to work on your basics. OK, your game has developed to the point where you come close to the first shot every time. Now crank up the speed. What you should observe is that the ball will bank to X rather than to A. The second shot is said to go “shorter” than the first. The reason for the change in angle is that for the slow shot, the object ball picks up follow on the way to the cushion and the follow bends the ball back towards the rail some after it leaves the cushion. The faster shot picks up less follow, doesn’t curve back and consequently hits shorter. Try moving the target so the high-speed straight shot goes. How much did you have to move it? In a game situation, you probably won’t have cue ball in hand for the bank, but that doesn’t keep you from choosing a distant target that looks about right based on your experience and shooting the ball towards the target. In Shot B, the point is to see how side spin on the cue ball can change the angle of the bank. Place the object ball and the cue ball the same distance off the cushion — maybe 10 inches. Shoot the cue ball full at the object ball using center left English. The cue ball should not have draw or follow so it will stop dead when it hits the object ball and spin a little in place. Note how far towards pocket A you can throw and spin the object ball. Some of the cue ball’s spin is transferred to the object ball, but since the action is a little like gears, the object ball will have right English. See how far the pair of balls can be moved away from the rail and still make the bank with a more or less stop shot. Too much side spin on the cue ball is actually counterproductive — it should have only slight spin after contact. Next time I’ll suggest some practice drills for banks. You better have practiced the above.

Golden Fleece Billiards, Seattle, Washington. The national championship series (NCS) 8-ball qualifiers are continuing to gather momentum, November 15-16, 2008 SAT SUN, Golden Fleece Billiards hosted the 2008 Open 8-ball national championships series. The original plan was to limit the field to 32 applicants, but due to the large turn-out the tournament directors opened the field to 64 players from Washington and nearby states, Adding $1250 and a $40 entry (pay out 24 spots), players traveled from WA, ID, OR, CA and Alaska, to secure the two NCS 8-ball spots, so they will qualify as one of 64-players, soon to head to Vegas with a $32,000 prize fund. The tournament was open to all players, men and women, with BCA rules in effect, race to 5 both sides, double elimination. With 64-players and talented field that included known players such as (Dan Louie pictured below) 1976 world champion, defeating Mike Sigel in a 4 hour final match; 2 time intercollegiate champion; and many numerous northwest titles. John Doherty (pictured left) a local player, acknowledged by many as the Northwest’s top onepocket talent. (Harry Platis) the noted attorney, (Tyler Luce) 2nd Las Vegas BCA 8-ball championship 2006, Raul Abenojar, Todd Marsh, Kris Iverson and Rich Geiler, getting to the finals was no easy task. Throughout the day, Robert Colby, looked nearly unstoppable,

pocketing balls with ease and getting nearly perfect cue ball position for the next shot. Robert remained undefeated until the finals. John Doherty (J.D) mowed his way through a talented field with some great quality wins, coming from the B side back to the finals, which was a double elimination format. The heat is on, the light and attention only on one table. Everyone quietly watched the ongoing art form performed by (J.D.) and Robert. (J.D.) a strong and sustainable group of national events in which the players, and the sport would all benefit”, and that’s what did happened in Nov 15-16 in Washington state at Golden Fleece Billiards. Vince Frayne “a former 8-ball expert”, the definition of Expert according to some is (A HAS BEEN DRIP” player “WHO NEVER WAS), the talent shown in this regional event was SCARY! Billy Cress said “It was the first time in 25 years, I’ve seen 100% paid entries for a tournament before the starting date. I attribute this to great playing equipment and constant action. Everything was on time, with everybody enjoying themselves. If you have not been to the Golden Fleece billiard room yet, make it a point to stop in”. Golden Fleece Billiards will hold the second 8-ball event January 17-18 2009. More championship events are coming, these being, 9-ball, 10- ball, 14-1 and one pocket. Slump Therapy: Prescription to Better Pool Health from: Mike Fieldhammer, BilliardCoach.com

A slump is a prolonged dry spell of sub-par performance on the pool table. All players go through them. In the depths of a slump, one can feel bewildered, frustrated, and hopeless. Sometimes a slump works itself out in a short time or it could go on for weeks upon weeks. Here are six remedies to help you escape the dreaded slump. 1. Change your routine. Could you be stuck in a rut because you have a regular schedule? Do you play two nights of leagues per week, warm up with the same teammates, and play a couple of weekly tournaments per month at the same place? You may need a jolt to the system to break out of the slump. Try to play some unknown players in unfamiliar surroundings. Play a tournament on the other side of town. Ask the counter person at a pool room to find a player to practice with and choose a game that you don’t normally play. You will be forced to perform in totally different circumstances. These unfamiliar pressures to your system may help you forget your slump-related anxiety. If these measures do the trick, you will have gained experience and confidence. 2. Buy a new cue. Why not get some new equipment? It may excite and motivate you. You’ll have a fresh chance to work on your game and become a whole new player. The cue could take a while to get used to forcing you to make some adjustments to your game. These adjustments could solve the problems that put you into a slump. You’ll also feel better about making mistakes because you are still adjusting to your new cue. In effect, it reduces the anxiety of missing. This is one of the keys to breaking out of a slump. Playing well is largely having the confidence that you will play well. When you are consumed with tension and angst in the slump, a new cue may ignite your confidence. You’ll relax and swing your new cue smoothly rather that the tight and fearful stroke that keeps slumps alive. 3.Gethelp. Take a lesson or ask another player to tell you if you are doing something different than pre-slump. Self analysis can be difficult. You may have slipped into some bad habits and an outsider’s opinion could get you back on track more quickly. Even Tiger Woods has a swing coach to critique his golf swing when he isn’t playing his best. Maybe you are jumping up during your stroke because of the anxiety of the slump. Don’t be afraid to copy a better player’s style of play. You must be humble and believe that changing something could be the way out of the slump. 4. Take a break. When you come back after some time away from the table, your performance expectations may have changed. You will understand that you’ve got to shed some rust and you may play below your potential. By giving yourself permission to miss you’ll remove pressure and be more relaxed at the table. The game may become fun again and this will spur excitement to play. 5. Clear up other issues in your life. If you are consumed by work or family problems, you will not be giving your pool game the focus it requires. Everyone has had times where thoughts of important issues spin through their heads while standing over a pool table. Is it any wonder mistakes can happen on the pool table with these major distractions? Sometimes pool should take a back seat to other parts of life. Spend some time working on important issues and your pool game will come around. I’ve witnessed incredible performances on the pool table by players who have great things happening in other areas of their life such as a promotion at work or an exciting new significant other. When things are going well in other areas of your life, your pool game may have no choice but to hit a record level of performance. (Slump Therapy continued on page 21)

Key Things to Check in the Search for Consistency

13

By Roger Long - Advanced Certified Instructor

The most common area of concern that instructors encounter is that of inconsistency. Many players who have reached advanced levels of play often complain that they are still not happy with their consistency. When confronted with this common complaint, the instructor must be able to determine exactly where the problem lies. Is it in the player’s inconsistent usage of good fundamentals? Is it in inconsistent mechanics? Is it in inconsistent practice routines? Or is it in one or more of a number of other things that can detract from consistent play? Roger Long Below I’ve listed six points that should be checked when trying to determine the reason, or reasons, for inconsistent play. Are your FUNDAMENTALS consistent? Remember and practice these four things: Straight Alignment, Level Cue, Stay Down, and Follow Through. Not doing these four things on every shot will lead to inconsistent shotmaking. Is your BREAK consistent? The break is the most important shot in the games of 8-Ball, 9-Ball and 10-Ball. A good break is one that pockets at least one ball and keeps the cue ball out of trouble. When you break well, you retain control of the table. When you don’t break well, you turn control over to your opponent. All professional players work very hard to develop a good, consistent break. Are your KICK SHOTS consistent? Kick shots have become probably the second-most important shot in the game. Being able to kick well will get you out of more tight spots than you could ever imagine. Usually, a kick shot is also much more reliable than a jump shot. Are your SAFETIES consistent? Defense is half the game. If you disdain safety play, or if you simply don’t know how to play a defensive game, you should get with it ASAP or you’ll never win your fair share of matches at the higher levels. Is your PRACTICE consistent? Do you practice regularly, and do you practice things that will positively reinforce your overall game? Just throwing balls out on the table and shooting them in the holes is not good, positive practice. Good, positive practice helps lead to a more consistent game. Is your PREPARATION consistent? When preparing for a tournament, do you eat properly, get enough rest, and dress comfortably? Paying attention to things like these can contribute to consistent play more than you might think.

next three matches, meeting up with Michelle Rakin in the hot seat match. She settled for third after her back-to-back losses to the Rakin sisters, first Michelle; then Mary. In the finals it was the battle of the Rakin sisters. Michelle, the elder has made a name for herself in women’s pool especially on the West Coast. She’s had her share of championships, both near and far in open, women’s and handicap events. She’s no stranger to the winner’s circle. Little sis, Mary, is a force to be reckoned with. She’s no longer in big sister’s shadow. Both sisters are fiercely competitive and confident, while maintaining a true sense of camaraderie and support of each other and the other women players. They play to win but have true sportswomanship. Mary got to the third round and lost to Eleanor Callado; then came back strong on the one-loss side defeating five opponents to earn her spot in the finals. Michelle’s route was more direct after her initial round bye; she defeating all of her opponents to sit in the hot seat waiting. A huge hi-five to Wayne and Marilyn Boucher and everyone at The Broken Rack for supporting pool for so many years and generously added $500 to the prize fund for this event. Remember when you’re in or around Emeryville; stop by for a game of pool and some refreshments. Linda Silva did the honors as the tournament director so you know the tournament went along smoothly.

Walking into the Broken Rack on Saturday afternoon, the 25th of October gave me a feeling of nostalgia. The Broken Rack was hosting their first West Coast Women’s 9 Ball Open and twenty-two ladies were already on the tables challenging one another for the champion’s crown when I arrived. I’ve had the opportunity to attend many tournaments in the past twenty years but it’s been awhile since I had the privilege of enjoying a women’s event so I was excited to see how the ladies were all shooting. There were many new faces in attendance, many of whom came out with the encouragement from the Diablo Valley Pool League director, Cony Mendoza. I hesitate to call several of the other players veterans as they are still full of youthful exuberance, but their pool playing skills speak for themselves. One of the spectators told me who the top four would be and he was right on the money of the who but not their placement. The fourth place finisher was Revelina Um who had her own fan club in attendance with husband and baby girl. She looked relaxed and yet focused as she rolled through her first three opponents. She met up with Eleanor Callado in the 4th round of play and was sent to the one-loss bracket where she defeated Helen Gaughran; then found herself settling for 4th place after losing to Mary Rakin in a close call match. Even with the obligations and responsibilities of being part of the organizational team putting this tournament together, Eleanor Callado still managed to finish in 3rd place after getting a first round bye, then winning her

Here’s Frank Giordano’s note. “Hanh Chung used T h u r s d a y ’ s tournament to get in stroke for the Pechauer after not playing for a year. He should have played in Monday’s tournament before this one, as he only lost to one player in the Pechauer—twice. Congrats to Ernesto Dominguez.” Actually, Hanh hadn’t been gone that long. He won back-to-back tournaments February 28 and March 6 this year, for a total of $680. What a guy.

On behalf of the staff at KC’s Midway, we would like to thank all the people who took part in the fundraiser for Mike Carey. Because of your generosity, we were able to raise $1,757 for the family. This is an accumulative total from donations, tournament entries, raffles and the silent auction. Everyone was so giving and supportive that it was a pleasure to host such an event. Special thanks go out to all the people who donated the prizes, food and time for this event. Inez from The Living Room donated a beautiful stein from their collection. Anton Renz donated two pilsner glasses that were absolutely gorgeous, as well as helped us set up the event. Greg Zabel donated a collector’s edition Budweiser stein from 1990. Joe Evinger, who took first place in the tournament, donated his winnings to Cameron Carey. It was a beautiful Outlaw pool stick donated by Kraig and Carol Pauli. Most of the food was donated by someone who wishes to remain anonymous, but thanks go out to them as well. Also a local artist donated some of her work, which was beautifully crafted, for the silent auction. All in all, the day was a great success, and we thank everyone for their contributions. We will be dedicating the Halloween Sharking tournament to the memory of Mike Carey, and will be donating the proceeds from the tournament each year to the family. Once again, we would like to thank everyone for their generosity and support through this tough time. Sincerely, The staff and owners of KC’s Midway Bar & Grill

Slump Therapy:

(continued from page 13)

6. Play your way out of it. Commit to figuring out what the problem is. Is your speed off? Missing long straight shots? Forgetting to play safe when the opportunity presents itself? Perform some drills and fine tune these weak spots. Attack these vulnerable areas and round out your game. I am gratified to see a player shooting shots they missed after a match rather than seeing a player shooting and making their favorite shot over and over. It can be difficult to address the source of a slump, but hard work can prevail. It is important to remember there are some growing pains to endure as you become a better player. When you eventually recover from the slump, you will be back in the game. You may have gained mental toughness or made a slight adjustment to your pool stroke. Remember why you love the game and that improving your skills is a dividend that will pay off for years. 2008-09 SEASON

For those of you who might have missed the explanation of what a “Chip” Pool Tournament is I will quickly explain it to you. The game is 8Ball, Singles. When you pay Shawn Spence your $10 entry fee, you receive 5 poker style chips. The format is a race to ONE (1) (an absolutely brutal game).

Anyone can win. If you win, you stay on the same table and wait for your next opponent. You are paid immediately for every game you win, instant gratification. If you lose, you must turn in one of your chips to the tournament director and then wait to be assigned to another table. The winner of course is the p layer with any chip/s left. Every player won at least one game. Everybody made money. What’s left of the prize fund is paid out to the final four players. 1st $80 Shawn Spence 2nd $60 Dan Hamper 3rd $40 Tina Hansen 4th $20 Lee Hedglin To all you pool players out there, thank you for supporting our tournaments.

December 2008 (continued from page 3)

At first glance, eight-ball is a far different style game from nine-ball. “I compare it to a chess match,” he said. “You have to think through your shots carefully, always looking ahead. It’s a far different approach from the one taken in 9-ball.” To win at eight-ball a player needs to make a ball or two on the break and get a roll now and then. “And in a big tournament there is always that one match that’s tight,” he admits. “If you can get through that one, you’re in good shape.” Marc has come out on top of his share of tough matches over the years. In addition to capturing the Rugby tournament, he’s won other regional tournaments. And in 2001, he won the singles title an a large international tournament in Las Vegas. Two years earlier he was a member of a fiveman team from Fargo that won the team title. And the women’s team from Fargo also was tourney champion. That is the only time that has happened, he said.

ONE

OF THE BEST

Oelslager was one of the top Fargo area teen pool players, and following high school he went to Chicago to work for a cue maker and to also refine his game. Eventually, he would enroll at St. Cloud State University in St Cloud, Minn., graduating with a degree in Business Administration. It was there where Marc also won the ACUI national pool title in 1991 - the equivalent of an NCAA title. In 1992, Oelslager opened Billiards on Broadway - a pool hall, bar and restaurant in Fargo. Today he’s married and has an eight-year-old son who is starting to get interested in pool. “It¹s fun to help him along,” he said. And perhaps one day there will be another Oelslager competing for the ‘Shootout’ title.

Golden Fleece Billiard King academic BilliaRds collective The Academic Billiards Collective is an organization that local teachers, billiards industry figures and community members are forming in response to pressure from the largest budget cuts seen in our schools in decades. Here’s a link to a Las Vegas Review Journal article about the first pool table donation of 9 9' D i a m o n d Tables we received: www.lvrj.com/ news/15581222.html. Our Board of Directors includes myself, John Kutcher owner of Pool Sharks in Las Vegas, Steve Thyfault publisher of Cues, News and Brews based in Las Vegas, Maridee Cooper local leading journalist on women’s billiards in Las Vegas. If you’ve heard of the B.E.T.T.E.R. Play Billiards Program that was active in the Dallas area for some years until recently, then our program should seem similar. We’ve based our organization, loosely, on theirs. We’ve started billiards clubs at various high schools and middle schools in The Clark County School District which is the 5th largest school district in the US servicing Las Vegas and the surrounding mountain area. In the spirit of a “collective,” the ABC has a goal to keep all industry

aspects closely involved in the formation of this endeavor partnering with several pool leagues, including: TAP Las Vegas (HS 8 ball), Southern Nevada 9 Ball Tavern Owners Association the local BCA league (HS 9 ball), and Las Vegas APA (middle school 8 ball and 9 ball) to accomplish the goals of keeping kids in s c h o o l , motivating them to keep grades up in order to participate, and introduce them to the game of pool. We’ve reached out to community businesses like the Indian Springs Casino, in Indian Springs, NV, where the ABC is based, to help with the program. They’ve allowed us to place one our donated tables on their game room floor to run tournaments and share coin revenue (see attached flyer) We’re finding a little success working with DonorsChoose.org to help equip our club but it comes slowly.
