Chris & JR The Rick John Memorial is finished. What a wild week of events! Rodney ‘The Rocket’ Morris made an appearance for charity. He played for over three hours against the local players, and the donations went to the American Heart Association, in Rick John’s name. The Tournament Director, Rick Jensen was the first of four locals to take Rocket down. Dale Howell, Cal Homes and Kara Graziano followed his lead. Thursday was a great night of fun, and we are grateful to Rodney for going overtime with the crowd. Friday night kicked off the 9 Ball events. The locals proved too much for the Rocket, with Bernie Devlin sending him to the losers bracket, where he then matched up with John Sandifer from Denver, who put Rodney out in 17th place. Several tough matches ensued, and it left Damian Pompanik with the title, with JR Melton in second. Local star Ace Brown finished third. The Scotch Doubles event was tough contest, won by Brooke Demke and Mike Allen. Juanita Brown and Chris Muirbrook finished

runner up.

Saturday brought the featured 8 ball events, with a Women’s Open, a Classic division for lower rated players, and an Open 8 for the top guns. With full fields in all events, over 260 total entries, there was going to be some tough matches, and that proved to be true. The brackets were chopped down to 8,16 and 16 respectively for a wild Sunday finish. Sunday brought out the best players from each division. Wendy Micari took out several top shooters to take down the Women’s tourney. She beat Jodie Gifford, who took second. Susie Moss placed third and Paula Reeder place fourth. The Classic was the biggest field, and Mike Elton survived to take the championship. He defeated Brian Lafond, who placed second. Mike Bauman placed third. The Open proved to be just that. Rodney Morris was put into the loser bracket on Saturday, but lived to get revenge on John Sandifer, only to get beat by long time local

Ga Young Kim Wins Championship TOP GUNS PLAY FOR THE MOST COVETED TITLE ON THE TOUR

BY SHARI STAUCH PHOTO BY DALE SHANK The Women’s Pro Billiard Tour returned to the beautiful Chinook Winds Event Center on the Oregon coast this year for the most coveted title on the tour, the WPBA Tour Championships, or as veterans know it, “the Nationals.” The event is only open to 48 players, and only by invitation. The world class field included all WPBA’s top guns save Karen Corr, who has moved back to England and is unsure whether she’ll return to professional competition. Beginning play on Thursday morning, November 10, the double elimination field was quickly whittled down to the top 16 who would compete in single elimination rounds for the title. The players making it past this first round would be featured in the quarter-finals, taped for ESPN broadcast in December and January (check poolmag.com for up-to-date air times). The final sixteen took to the floor late Friday night to pare down the field, with eight great matches. US Open runner-up Ga Young Kim defeated Hall of Famer Ewa Laurance 9-6 despite a valiant comeback from Laurance late in the game. Last year’s Tour Championship runner-up and the 2010 National Junior Champion Brittany Bryant defeated Norway's Line Kjorsvik 9-7. Great Britain's Kim Shaw destroyed American contender Liz Cole, and in a surprise victory, the Texas Tornado Vivian Villarreal bested UK native Kelly Fisher. Fisher, hot off a win at the Yalin Women's World Championship in the Philippines, was an early favorite. The other four matches in this round included Swedish native Helena Thornfeldt defeating Georgia's Monica Webb 9-2; media superstar Jeanette Lee (the Black Widow) over Colorado's Melissa Little 9-3, Hall of Famer Allison Fisher over hot newcomer Erica Park of Korea 9-3; and New York's Jennifer Barretta over Liz Ford 9-5. On Saturday, the first to take the stage in the televised races to seven were Ga Young Kim vs. young Brittany Bryant. Kim quickly left Bryant tied for fifth with a 7-2 win, then waited for her semi-final opponent. Next up, England’s Kim Shaw vs. the “Texas Tornado” Vivian Villarreal. Villarreal put on a whirlwind performance, but Shaw stayed right with her until the bitter end. Vivian eked out a 7-6 victory to set up a Kim vs. Villarreal showdown. In the third quarter-final match, Jeanette Lee faced friend and formidable opponent Helena Thornfeldt. Lee won by a slim one game margin, 7-6. And, wrapping up Saturday’s action, a marquis match between BCA Hall of Famer Allison Fisher and New York’s Jennifer Barretta, always a contender but yet to win a major title. Fisher, winner of the 2011 U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships, the WPBA’s last major tour stop in Tulsa, Oklahoma this past June, was eager to put another notch in her belt, and eventually defeated Barretta 7-5 in another close match to set up a Lee vs. Fisher semi-final. make WPBA history and cement the last title of the 2011 season. Ga Young Kim was having none of the Tornado’s dark cloud; she defeated Vivian Villarreal 7-2 and set her eyes on the prize. Ditto Allison Fisher, who quickly eliminated Jeanette Lee 7-1 to secure her own seat in the final. And so it was a fan’s dream, two of the best players to wield a cue facing off in a battle for the last bragging rights of the season. Ga Young Kim came on strong in the final match, opening with a two-rack run. But a scratch in the third rack put Fisher at the table to run out and close the gap 1-2. Answering with a break and run of her own she quickly tied the match 2-2. Fisher then pulled ahead 3-2, only to be stopped short by another game win from Kim to tie it up 3-3. Then Ga Young Kim hit another gear. She won the next three racks to lead 6-3, just one game away from the title, but Allison fought back with a clever masse in game ten, followed by a break and run to trail one game, 5-6. She broke, played safe on the one, but left Ga Young Kim a long cut shot. Kim made the cut to the delight of excited fans, and ran the remainder of the rack to take the game, match and title victory! Into The Cushion

Here are two shots that demonstrate a feature of cushions that you might overlook: they are relatively soft. When a ball hits a rail with force, it can sink in more than half an inch depending on the angle and speed of attack.

Shot 1 is one of the first trick shots I learned. The bank looks impossible since the 1 ball is frozen to both the 2 ball and the cushion. Hit the 1 ball as full as you can without hitting the 2 ball first and the bank will at least be close. Adjust the angle by hitting the ball a little thinner to make it go more towards the short rail (which is called “longer”) or with a little left English to “stiff” or “pinch” the 1 ball and make it go “shorter” or more towards the long rail side of the corner pocket.

before it reaches the 9. What happens instead if you hit the shot firmly is that 5 sinks into the cushion and remains in the cushion for nearly an inch as it travels towards the 9. If your speed is right, the 5 will leave the cushion just as it reaches the 9 and the 9 will fly into the pocket.

If you play on the same table all the time, there is a technique you can use to prepare for bank shots such as this. Find a distant spot on the wall along the line where the shot is straight. As long as you set the balls at the same place on the cushion each time, which should be even with the second diamond, you will have a head start on the aiming -- just shoot the 1 ball at the far target. For similar shots, such as three-cushion banks and kicks, look for similar guides. Shot 2 -- set up as a combo for the 9 ball -- also looks impossible since the 3 and 5 are at a 45 degree angle into the cushion and the 5 is a chalkwidth or a little more from the 9. Any reasonable person would think the 5 ball will leave the cushion long

If you set the 3-5 up closer to the 9 ball and maintain high speed, it’s possible to miss the 9 by having the 5 still well into the cushion when it gets to the 9 and it will actually shoot the 9 away from the rail. Once you have a feel for the speed needed to make the shot work with the spacing shown, try the shot without the 3-5. First notice the line of the 3-5 and see how close the right edge of the pair passes the edge of the 9. In the diagram, it looks like the 5 would just miss the 9 if the cushion wasn’t there. Next, remove the 3 and 5 and shoot the cue ball along that same line and at full speed. The 9 should again fly into the pocket as the cue ball follows the same path that the 5 ball did from the combination. I think you will find the shot more than a little amazing. Shots like this are among what I would call “irregular” shots, where regular shots, such as straight-ins and simple cut shots make up the vast majority of the shots you will ever play. The rare shots can often get you out of trouble, although it’s mastery of the routine shots that will keep you from getting into trouble. And the strange shots are fun.

Always Seek the Advantage in Nine Ball PLAY THE CONDITIONS, DON’T GET OUTSIDE WHO YOU ARE BY THE MONK

This is not a feel good program. This is the real deal. You will be working with the monk for over four months. You will be working step by step to build the skills at nine ball that your opponent does not have. You will master the important moves this game calls for. You will become a master nine ball player and play better nine ball than you have every played this game before. May all the rolls go your way, The Monk

In nine ball you must play the conditions. Don’t get outside who you are. Learn to be a warrior. A good soldier is not anxious but prepared to strike at all times with an effective well disciplined stroke. His intentions are clear. He knows his opponent and he knows the territory. He seeks an advantage. Master the art of war. I once lured a top player to a senior center that had no shades on the window. I chose four o’clock in the afternoon. The sun would be just right. My opponent has had surgery and he cannot stand the glare. Since he was the best player he readily agreed to my time and location. I left him shots where he had to face the window and was able to win the match.

Rules you must go by: 1. Your first order of business is to classify the shot you are facing. It is a “Taking your Medicine or Playing for a Sweet Roll? 2. You should always see the cue ball coming off the rail. Never send it to the rail and leave yourself a rail shot. Always visualize the cue ball away from the rail.

“Taking your Medicine” I faced a seven ball I could do nothing with. All I could do was pocket the ball and take a long tough shot on the eight ball. I decided I would take my chances with the eight ball. I would go through my pre shot routine and make every effort to pocket that ball. I was not going to lose on the seven ball so I cinched it and then faced a full table cut on the eight. It went in and I was straight in on the nine. If I had any reservations on this move, I would have failed. I call this move, “Taking your medicine”. Make the shot and take what you get. Once I faced a shot where I would break open a clump. I did not know where the balls would go once I made contact. I simply made my shot, allowed the cue ball to plow in to the clump and accepted whatever the roll the roll would be. I call this “Playing for a sweet roll”. In both cases I don’t want to miss my shot because I am worried about the next shot.

You must be certain on what you intend to do. If you read my book I Came to Win I offer you a wonderful chapter on what intentions will do for you. If you can control your mind, and your persona and who you are and how you function you will beat most players. Discipline is what enables us to take home the prize. We all shoot shots well, we all know safeties but the disciplined mind is the one who wins.

I faced a shot where I was actually playing for a bank on my next ball. I told myself to “Be willing to face the next shot” and make the shot. In the past when I played for a difficult shot on my next ball I missed the shot I was shooting because I was worried about the tough shot coming up. I call this, “not wanting to face a tough shot”. • Take your medicine. • Play for a sweet roll. • Be willing to face the next shot.

3. Learn to recognize safeties when they come up. Don’t stand there and try to figure out what you should already know. 4. When playing combo’s always pin point where the first ball is going. You know the second ball is going in the pocket. 5. Make sure you are clear about what you want after the shot. Often times we can only play position for a bank or combo and miss the shot because we are not totally interested in the combo or bank. Pinpoint where the cue ball will go after you deliver the stroke. Spend the day memorizing these rules. Imbed them within your mind so they become a natural instinct. TAP Little River, SC, Nov. 23rd, 2011 - TAP Players from all over the USA and Canada, the best of the best from each TAP territory, won their trips to the TAP Nationals event held in Las Vegas, NV November 9th through the 14th. Bally’s once again played host to this exciting event, that TAP Players look forward to each and every year placing their bets, they will be the TAP National Champions for 2011. The kickoff party starts off the event on Wednesday evening, with fabulous food and beverages provided by Founder and CEO Loyd Schonter. Registration handed out gift bags also provided by Schonter for each and every National trip winner / player. So, they were winners when they arrived. The Predator Group provided their support of the event once again, along with vendors D & D Cue Repair, Speed Break, Pool A Holic Apparel, Hustlin, SharkNU Apparel, and Joe Salazar from Connoisseur Cues. Champions Robin Dodson and Allen Hopkins both attended TAP’s National event this. Robin provided instruction on jumping and Allen held expositions throughout the entire week of the event. Players and Licensees alike enjoyed the opportunity to interact with them both, and vice versa. This year, a lot was at stake. Championships for the TAP 8 Ball National Team Event and 9 Ball National Team Event were held in addition to the ever popular Rally dream team event, slated as Rally at Bally’s for the second year. Singles provided each evening as well, also produced 8 National Champions.

This new TAP feature product will be available in the next couple of weeks for use by some selected areas, and will be going out to all TAP Players and Territories in 2012. The phone application will allow players to keep score on their phones and submit via their phones, but that’s only the beginning. DVPL Scotch Doubles 8 BALL League WINTER SESSION RESULTS The Scotch Doubles 8 Ball League for the Winter Session ended this past September 2011. Twelve teams signed up for the double round session which was held on Sundays at Farringtons Bar in Pleasant Hill, Ca. and generated a total payout of

LESLIE BERNARDI, RICH YODER $6,407, which all went back to the participating teams. The dominating team at the end was Leslie Bernardi and Rich Yoder. These duo are part of the same Open-Mix team. Leslie is also currently the Top Female Shooter in the DVP Open and Women’s leagues, and the Champion of the 9 Ball Scotch Doubles League with Jared Williams. Congratulations to them. They won 17 matches and lost 6 out of the 22 required. They also took top honors for “the most break and runs” with 8. They faced tough competition from Holly Good Luck Robinson and Dave Gomez; last years this Year scotch 8 Ball and 9 Ball champions as Bozeman well as former champions Shawn and Bar 9 VJ Modelo. Holly’s aggressive game speaks for itself and it totally complements Dave’s game. 3rd $836 Shawn Modelo / Vj Modelo This father-daughter team is very dangerous. They are also former champions of the DVPL 8 and 9 Ball Scotch Doubles Leagues. They have been laying together for years. Both dominated the ACS national Championships last year as well as BCA for Senior Single Championships. They are DAVE GOMEZ, HOLLY ROBINSON both remarkable players. 4th $708 Morris/Bj 5th $599 Annette Wood and Eugene This was the first session that this pair played together. They played very well together. They placed 5th in the overall standings. 6th $506 Gary Marcus and Cony Mendoza These two are veterans of pool. They complemented each other with styles of play. With Gary’s great cue ball control and Cony’s ability to slice any makes them a dangerous duo. 7th $422 Dick Knutson and Tiffany Walker Two veterans of the game of pool joined efforts this season. DCK, who’s been out of the pool scene for years, joins Tiffany SHAWN AND VJ MODELO Walker, a dangerous and temperamental shooter to placed 7th in this tough field. 8th $349 Aljoe Mandoriao / Jess Quinata 9th $284 Chad Okada / Kristin Einsen 10th $229 Robert Vanfredenberg / Mili Chin This couple first came into the scotch league a few years back and from their first holiday party with DVPL, which they took first place and their high finish in that session, they made their presence felt. 11th $184 Fred Poetzsch / Brenda Clark Fred is a Veteran of DVPL leagues. He participated in the early stages of the Scotch sessions. He joined forces with Brenda who continues to show improvement all around and was able to better her defense by teaming up with him. 12th $145 Ramon Borrayo / Jenny McCary Jenny and Ramon connect with high hopes. Jenny was able to finish the season with an alternate partner. She has come a long way since participating in all the DVPL leagues and events offered including TWCWT recently finished.

TWCWT Finale The sixth and final stop of the 2011 Tiger West Coast Women’s Tour (TWCWT) took place Nov. 19 & 20 at The Broken Rack in Emeryville, Ca. We were all thrilled when a tour-record 53 women entered the event. Among the many women we were happy to see come out were two former West Coast Women regulars and top players—Kim Broughton (formerly Benson) and Heather Pulford. Work conflicts made it impossible for either to make the previous TWCWT dates this year, but we hope to see more of both in 2012. The large field made it possible to pay out to 12th place in the Main Event and to 8th place in the Second Chance event, which drew 24 players on Sunday. On Saturday, the race to the top eight in the main event shook out this way. Eleanor Callado took matches from Jaime Dizon, Kirsten Karim, Heather Pulford and Khanh Ngo to secure her place. Tiffany Finnan from Sacramento beat Cony Mendoza, Tracy Palma, Shawn Modelo and Rachel Byrket to claim another spot. Mary Rakin remained undefeated with wins over Claudia Wong, Kim Broughton, Cathy Reaves and Leslie Bernardi. And Bonnie Plowman defeated Salene Castaneda, Greta Garbo, Patty West and Revelina Um to be the fourth player remaining on the winners side. On the one-loss side, Kim Broughton, having been knocked over early by Mary Rakin, took four matches and a late night forfeit to remain in the main event. Leslie Bernardi won three matches before being sent to the one-loss side—also by Mary—then took a match from Lindsey Dorn to earn a place on Sunday. Khanh Ngo, a San Francisco player going for her second final 8 in just her second TWCWT tournament, went deep on the winner’s side before losing to Eleanor Callado, then had to face Emilyn Callado on the one-loss side. Khanh won that match putting Emilyn, who’s had an excellent year, out in 9th/12th. The final Sunday spot went to Rachel Byrket who’d also played deep before losing to Tiffany Finnan. Rachel defeated Mary Osborn to stay in the Main Event. Sunday morning started with a win by Eleanor Callado over Tiffany Finnan, and a victory by Bonnie Plowman over Mary Rakin in a tough hill-hill contest. Leslie Bernardi, who’s raised her game to a whole new level this year, continued strong defeating Kim Broughton, and Rachel Byrket won her match with Khanh Ngo. Then Tiffany Finnan ended what Leslie laughingly called her “reign of terror”, putting Leslie out in 5th/6th place where she was joined by Rachel Byrket who lost to Mary Rakin. The hot seat match between Eleanor Callado and Bonnie Plowman was won by Eleanor. Mary Rakin defeated Tiffany Finnan, putting Tiffany out in 4th place. The last match on the one-loss side was a rematch between Mary and Bonnie Plowman. This time Mary prevailed earning a place in the finals. It was fitting that the final match of the year should be between the Tour’s top two players, both WPBA pros. Eleanor Callado had finished 17th-24th in the WPBA Tour Championship in Oregon the week before—scoring a win over Canadian and World Junior Champion Brittany Bryant and giving Vivian Villareal a very tough match. Mary was not able to play in Oregon but was ranked 30th on the Tour before it took place. The two young women have grown up together in the Bay Area competing against each other countless times while honing their skills; their competition always fascinating. In two previous tournaments at The Broken Rack, Eleanor gained the hot seat and Mary battled back to meet her in the finals. TWCWT plays true double elimination. Each time Mary took the first set before Eleanor dug in her heels to win the second set and first place. This time Mary seemed determined not to follow the same old script. She had her game going—her three matches on the one-loss side all convincing 5-2 wins. In the finals she never faltered, powering to first place (7-2) (5-1). It was a great tournament that capped a very successful year for TWCWT. Despite the lagging economy and hard times in the pool business, this has been a year of exciting growth for our

Tour. We added a sixth stop. Our tournament entries started at a healthy 37 and grew from there culminating with 53 players at our final stop. Seventyeight different women became members and played at least one stop on the tour, an increase of 25 over 2010. Thirty-four women played in four or more tournaments which qualified them to share in the points prize money. That’s an increase of 13 over last year and we were MARY RAKIN able to pay slightly more per point as well. We started reciprocal membership with the So Cal Ladies Tour and we offered livestreaming for the first time. It’s clear to us that there are lots of women out there who love to play pool and who love to compete. We expect to grow even more next year. We are grateful to our sponsors who appreciate the potential of women’s pool and support it. Tiger has been very generous in donation of its products to be raffled for the benefit of the Tour at every stop with a grand prize awarded at our final stop. The grand prize, a Tiger package including cue, shirt, hat and towel, was won by Shauna Madrigal, who plays on our tour and the SoCal Ladies Tour. Magic Rack provided racks for use in all our tournaments. Diablo Valley Pool League helped with our advertising expenses and tirelessly promotes our tour to its players. Eileen Hanshaw provided very beneficial chair massage at our tournaments and donated a portion of the proceeds to our Tour. We thank the Break for its coverage of our tour and other women’s regional tours. TOP AMATEURS CROWNED U.S. AMATEUR CHAMPIONS Winner of Men’s and Women’s Divisions Advance to 2012 Pro Events AKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (November 14, 2011) — The top amateur poolplayers in the country came to the Gulf Coast of Florida in early November to compete for the coveted U.S. Amateur Championship title. After three days of intense

competition, Suzanne Smith of Edgewood, Wash., and Ernesto Bayaua of Houston, Texas, emerged as the 2011 U.S. Amateur Champions. This year’s event took place Nov. 4-6 and was held in two locations: Strokers in Palm Harbor, Fla., and the Crooked Cue in Clearwater. The Men’s Division began Fri., Nov. 4 at Strokers, while the Women’s Division got underway the following day at the Crooked Cue. In the finals the of the Women’s Division, Smith defeated local favorite Jamie Toennies of Largo, Fla. The match opened in the 8-Ball set, with Toennies jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Smith came storming back, closing out the 8-Ball set with four straight wins, and opening the 9-Ball set with two more. Finding herself down 6-2, Toennies didn’t give in. She took the next three games to pull

within a game of Smith. Finally, Smith managed to close out the match by taking the next three games for a 9-5 victory. Smith moves on to compete in the WPBA U.S. Open next year. Toennies finished as the Runnerup in her first U.S. Amateur Championship competition. Finishing in 3rd Place was Lenore McCarthy of Bolingbrook, Ill. In the Men’s Division, Bayaua bested former champion Ron Park of Charlotte, N.C. The match would prove to be one of the greatest comebacks in U.S. Amateur Championship history. The match opened in the 8-Ball set, with Park opening up a commanding 6-1 lead. Just when it looked like the former champ was ready to put the match away, Bayaua reeled off six straight wins for a 7-6 lead as the match shifted to the 9-Ball set. Park took the first two games to regain the lead, before Bayaua tied it 8-8. Park momentarily regained the lead with a win in the 17th frame, but Bayaua would not be denied, winning the next three games and the match 119. Bayaua will advance to the U.S. Open Championship next year. Park’s Runner-up finish was his highest at a U.S. Amateur Championship since he won the event in 1994. Finishing in 3rd Place was David Uwate of Miami, Fla. In 4th Place was Will Haagensen of Mobile, Ala. Criegh Dumo of Bonney Lake, Wash., and Pete Ziemak of Windsor Locks, Conn., tied for 5th Place. The 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship was produced and conducted by the American Poolplayers Association (APA). Preliminary qualifying rounds were held throughout the country in mid-Sept., with nearly 2,200 players attempting to qualify. Smith and Bayaua competed with the nation’s most highly skilled amateur poolplayers who were all vying for the U.S. Amateur Championship title. The Men’s Division consisted of 128 players, while the Women’s Division featured 32 players. As Champions, Smith and Bayaua will return next year to defend their coveted titles. The U.S. Amateur Championship is a double

elimination tournament that offers the nation’s top amateur players the opportunity to showcase their skills through a combination of 8-Ball and 9-Ball matches, in the only APA event that does not use The Equalizer® handicap system. Suzanne Smith EXCLUSIVE INTERIEW

I had the opportunity of interviewing the new U S Amateur Champion in the Women’s Division Suzanne Smith, a lady familiar to pool players in the Pacific Northwest. Suzanne has had a great year! She preceded her win at the U S Amateur’s by winning the Women’s Master Division at the Western BCA Regional 9-Ball Championships in October in Lincoln City, OR. The U S Amateur Championships held in the fall each is year sponsored by the APA. Pool players can qualify at locations all across the United States and the winners of the qualifiers advance to the finals. Suzanne won the U S Amateur Qualifier at The Cue Ball in Salem, Oregon. The men’s field was held at Strokers Palm Harbor, Florida and the women played at the Crooked Cue in Tampa the first day. I asked Suzanne to tell us a little about the event and she said, “I went straight through the event. I played for the hot seat on Sunday against the girl that would eventually end up being my opponent in the finals, Jamie Toennies from Largo, Florida. I was very excited to be playing for the hot seat. I knew if I won that match I would be in contention to win the title, which is obviously what my goal was going out.” The event was being live streamed so the audience was able to watch at home on their computer as the game unfolded. I was also watching the finals when Jamie jumped out to a 2-0 lead after an 8 on the break in the second game. I asked Suzanne her feelings, to which she responded, “The first game I took a low percentage shot, where I played safe. I had one ball that was tied up with her ball and I went for a really tough shot and missed and it ended up opening up the table. I don’t feel like the 8 ball break ... that was the only one of the event that was played on me ... I felt like ... ‘Well OK, I hope she doesn’t do that again.’ But I figure, it’s a lucky shot and if everybody could do it all the time they would. I didn’t feel too bad, I just tried to focus on the next game.” The tournament had an unusual format and I asked Suzanne to explain to me how it worked. “The winner of the lag got to choose whether they wanted to break or pick the game. Once the game was determined you had to play that whole set out. Jamie won the lag in the final but she wanted to play 8 ball so I got the break. We then played 6 games of 8 ball. She won the first 2 but then I came back and won the next 4 and we switched over to 9 ball and we played out the rest of the set in 9 ball.”

This format was played throughout the tournament with the early rounds being a race to 5 and the finals a race to 9. After wins at the Women’s Masters of the Western BCA and the Women’s Division of the U S Amateur Championships, I was curious as to what Suzanne did to change her game over the last year or so. She told me, “Well I think having my daughter has really put things in a different perspective for me. When I get my time away, I really try to make the most of it. I just look at things differently. It’s important because I really want to do well. I really want to shoot my best but I’m not willing to make all the sacrifices that the best players do to excel. So I just try to make the most out of the time I am spending to practice and I try to match up with people and I try to play. Playing on the Northwest Women’s Pool Association (NWPA) has helped a lot. I’ve struggled and have only had one good event. Just being around the competition and just fully committing when I’m there to what I’m doing.”

I can’t even ... I’m trying to imagine myself in that position. I have a lot, a lot, a lot of work to do to make that happen.” We would like to thank Suzanne for taking her time to talk to us.

“Having children, I can’t say enough about it. It has totally changed me as a person. You learn about yourself and your strengths and who you are. I have a little girl that just turned 17 months. She’s awesome, so fun, really great temperament, really pleasant. She’s into everything right now, up and down, in every drawer ... it’s interesting. It’s a great time.” Suzanne worked hard and it paid off. At the Western BCA she played on 7’ tables and played on 9 footers for the U S Amateur’s. She credits hard work and her practice partner Robert Hahn, who would annihilated her in practice, from which she worked harder. She also worked on her mental game and took some lessons from Steve Lingelback and got some good advice from Carissa Biggs. Suzanne is an up and coming player who is working hard to improve her game and take it to another level. She is currently sponsored by Creigh Dumo the Northwest distributor for Hustlin, who gives her shirts. She is looking for additional sponsors so she can pursue other opportunities. When I asked her who she wanted to thank, she simply said, “I want to thank my family for all their support and love for believing in me. My husband, my sister and my baby, everybody has made it possible, all my family, it has been huge.” Because of her win at the U S Amateurs, Suzanne will have a paid entry into the WPBA U S Open

CARRIDO WINS By David Teller Edmund Carrido of Auburn, Wash., held off a former top finisher in the U.S. Open to win a follow up tournament held Nov. 5 and 6 at Black Diamond Billiards and Eatery to redeem a lackluster performance in last month’s open 9-ball event in Spokane, Wash. In the Labor Day open 9-ball tournament, Carrido, a 2010 National Singles Championship qualifier, lasted only three rounds and was eliminated by Brady Golan. In the follow up tourney, Carrido got under way with convincing wins: 7-2, 7-3, 7-5, 7-1, and into the match for the driver’s seat where he continued his route, beating John “Jack” Madden 7-1. Madden, now a highly respected cue maker in St. Ignatius, Mont., placed fifth in the U.S. Open in 1979 and placed third in the World Nine Ball Championship in 1978. Madden faced the music in the one loss bracket, being matched against a player he put there, Danny Quince. Madden beat Quince 7-4 the first time. He beat Quince again, 7-2, to get another shot at Carrido. Carrido got off to a rough start in the rematch. A red hot Madden with a side-arm whip break stroke started out with a 2-9 combo and then followed with a break and run to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead. Despite getting one run out, Carrido continued with control problems, giving up a ball-in-hand once on a whiffed kick shot, another

beat Fernandez 5-3 in their first meeting during the second round. Hopkin also posted wins 5-3, 5-1 and 5-2 to get to the driver’s seat. In the one-loss bracket, Fernandez eliminated Sheila Moss and Darlene Freedman 5-2 both times. A steady-shooting Christie Loehding gave Fernandez a little more workout, but lost 5-3. Back in the final match, Fernandez and Hopkin exchange break and runs. Fernandez yielded two scratches and a miss to give Hopkin momentum who ran out the next two tables. Fernandez tried to wrestle the next table away, but left the 8 ball sitting in the jaw of the pocket, leaving an easy out for Hopkin. The women’s tournament was played by Billiard Congress of America rules on 7-foot Shelti tables with Red-Circle cue balls and an alternating break. Entry fee was $25 with no greens fees, but no extra money added. The total purse for this tournament was $360. The race was to five on the winner’s side and to four in the loser’s bracket. After a Madden break and run to make it a 3-5 defict, Carrido went on a tear getting a make on the break and running out twice and then running out a third time after an unproductive Madden break. Down 6-5, Carrido scratched yet again, but Madden reciprocated by selling out the 9 ball leaving an easy tap in for Carrido. The best comeback performance goes to Zak Biggs, who lost his first match 7-5 to Kenny Trambitas. Biggs’ high-octane game charged back through the one-loss bracket 5-0, 5-1, 5-1, 5-4, 5-4, 5-3, before losing in a hill-hill match against Quince to finish in 4th place. The tournament was played by Billiard Congress of America rules on 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown tables with Red-Circle cue balls and an alternating break. Entry fee was $50, the total purse for this tournament was $1850. The race was to seven on the winner’s side and to five in the loser’s bracket. Tournament of Champions at Rack ‘Em

Medford, OR November 2011 Every Friday night we hold an 8 ball tournament at Rack ‘Em. Points are accrued for placing, and B players earn extra points for attendance. Other points that can be won are for the 8 ball break pot, and for the blind draw Bounty. Anyone who has put a dollar into those side pots and either makes the 8 ball on the break during the tournament, or beats the Bounty player, wins those pots. High Woman out of the money also receives extra points, so it is fun for all skill levels. Since June, we have 98 players who have accrued points in the standings to earn a place in our Tournament of Champions, held semi-annually. Our next one will be held in May. Throughout the last session, we saved $400 to go toward this TOC, which was held on November 12th at noon on 5 bar boxes. We had 34 tough competitors who earned the right to play in the Tournament of Champions held last Saturday. It was a super time for all involved. It started off with a Player’s Meeting where I thanked the players and Rack ‘Em for having us and for adding $200 to the tournament, bringing the total prize fund to $940! We also covered basic pool etiquette and sharking such as slow play, cell phones, moving, and talking during the opponent’s turn and during matches. We told everyone that as they lost they would receive a door prize of their choice from the fabulous selection set up on a nearby table. Channel 12 - KDRV came out to cover our tournament. They do a segment called Athlete of the Week, which Mark Fenn was featured on. It aired Thursday night, Nov. 17th at 6:30. We went over the rules and then announced the A players who MARK were Mike Zimmerman, Barney LaMontagne, John Cassidy, Ken Cavener, Steve Heiman, Linda Carter, and Jesse Allred. The C players were Dara Brood, Shawn Carter, and Jimmy Hubbard. Everyone else was a B player, which included Mark Fenn, who was given a game on the wire by the A players. A players went to 4 games, B players - 3, and C players only needed to win 2 games. And then it was ON! Mark Fenn won the whole shebang against Steve Heiman in the Finals. Steve lost his first match but came up through the ranks to challenge Mark for it all, going

thrill-thrill in the first set, but making one mistake in the final game to take 2nd overall. Mark is now an A player. Mark started his journey to the Finals with wins over Shawn, Matt Andrews, Mike McClure, and Jesse, before playing Joshua Holder for the point. Josh won out over Eric Cole, John C, Linda C, and Stephanie Karpins before falling to Mark for the hot seat. Meanwhile, Steve Heiman lost his first match to Stephanie and then tore it up on the B side, posting wins over Don Smith, Matt A, Randal Milhoan, Linda C, Larry Nathan, Jesse A, Stephanie, and Joshua to earn his way into the Finals. Way to go Steve! No A players made it into the top 4 except new A player, Steve Heiman. More notable were the ones who did not make it into the money at all - Mike Z and Ken C. On the B side, they played each other first round, the winner then played John C, and the winner of that played Barney. That was one tough bracket with all of our top A players battling it out! The Break pot had $9 left over from the previous night, so midway during the tournament, we set up a break table on the 9 footers and were ready to give out the $23 to anyone who could break in the 8 or even break and run. Luckily, Stephanie ended up winning it in the real tournament. We start a new session on the 18th. To play in the next TOC, you must play in at least 8 weeks to qualify. There will be some allowances for work and child custody schedules. Everyone will start fresh with 0 points and the next TOC will be held around 6 months out in May. Please patronize Rack Em not only on Friday nights but any time you want to play pool so we can keep the pool scene alive FENN in the Rogue Valley! Thanks to Rack ‘Em for having a great place to hold tournaments. If you love to play pool, come on out and play. We welcome all skill levels. #13 Lucky Plays the Pescado Grande

2nd part of this adventure continued from last month …… It was 11 am Lucky had been playing all night and most of the morning. Determined to preserver Lucky was 5 ahead going to ten ahead for $10,000…. Lucky got what looked to be a second wind. Playing now for over 10 hours, you know he is tired. With 5 games to go… a little rustling of the crowd started up when a new guy came in. We did not know who this mystery guy was but the people in Hardtimes knew him…he came over to where we were and watched the match. The games went back and forth again but Lucky creped out another few games and got to seven. His stride was pretty good. Lucky ended the next few games playing safeties in every game getting ball in hand then finishing the racks. After two sessions I had over $30,000 on me, what we won and brought with us for the action. I sensed they were not done. The mystery guy who came in said something about betting some. Obviously he had some money and he wanted some of this tired old man’s action or money. Wow with all this money it was already going to be a nice I thought. Mystery man and Lucky got into a private conversation off to the side. It seemed Lucky was mostly listening to whatever proposition was happening. Eyes and ears wide open. Lucky nodded his head in what looked to be a favorable agreement. Come back and says I am giving him a spot What!! “I am giving Pescado Grande a spot”. Lucky has always told me he never gives a spot unless he really needs to embarrass an idiot-jerk . This match was very civil. So I was puzzled. Lucky said “Christmas is coming up”…. Not sure how he meant that. Either figuratively he will be receiving gifts from this Santa Claus or he will become Santa Claus, weird. “What’s the spot” I asked “The Black Mamba” The Mexican was getting the wild 8ball. $2000 a game pay at ten ahead. This was the first time I had seen “McKinley’s. It was too much money to handle. We talked to the folks that own the place and they were going to let us use the safe to keep some money in. We each put up $20,000. We counted out our money. The mystery man counted out 40 McKinley’s. The economy good for some. We put the money into a bank bag and I was to continue to hold it. With agreement with the house we put our money in another bank bag and put back in the safe. My side bet guy wanted to keep betting $50 a game but go back to paying after each game. I suspected he was running out of money and might quite at any time.

We were playing on money already won and none of our own. It would be the time for a robbery for sure. I was truly nervous. Lucky said he thinks he figured out the magic rack. He thinks it make the balls get off to a good start setting off the felt/cloth when cue ball hits the rack. It is easier to make the balls and more of them. Someone was reading an On The Break Magazine. a bundle must have just been delivered by mail to Hard Times. I was concerned that the stories that were published were going to kill Lucky’s action, but no one seemed too alarmed or they didn’t read that section of the paper yet. Lucky had the first break. “Here we go” he said the sweaters must of thought it was said to them but mainly Lucky was saying it to himself over the nebulous magic rack. Lucky starred at the rack for a minute said “no spaces between the balls”. He was really looking at the places the numbered balls were sitting in the rack. Scouting out how to hit the rack and where the balls will go on the table after the break. Lucky positioned himself for breaking, wiggled into a comfortable stance. Making sure his feet and body were aliened. A few practiced stroke…. Crackkkk !!…. a sound everyone knows as a good break. Cue ball stopped dead in the middle of the table. 4 balls went in. Interesting it was all the even numbered balls, leaving the oneball for an easy start up shot. That is Lucky’s textbook break. It was a simple map to the nineball and the game. Pescado Grande racks. Crackkkk there was that sound again. That was deafening my ears were ringing. Lucky makes the same balls and got the same position. He is dialed in. Pescado Grande racks game 3 and Lucky makes not a ball. Pescado Grande makes a few balls and runs out the rack. Pescado Grande runs out a few more and gets the lead. Lucky would like the break back but noting he can do this magic rack is truly magic for all who get the break. Pescado Grande now has run 6 racks and has a lead, something Lucky wanted. What was early in the morning is now the late afternoon. Lucky had no sleep over 34 hours now. The games went back and forth. No ground was being made. I was confident knowing that any time Lucky could do what Lucky does, turn it on. Pescado Grande starts to creep up and played good to go 9 ahead. Lucky was getting behind, what was lucky thinking we were likely not getting another set. We were on his hill. Pescado Grande breaks and again looks like a run out the money gone. He jawed the

5 ball, what a relief. Lucky got out. We were either on the hill or one off for what was hours. Again what was Lucky thinking. People were actually sleeping in the bleachers. The side bet guy was now sitting next to me so that the money transferred easily. After a while someone who was reading the OTB magazine came over to one of Pescado Grande’s entourage holding up the magazine pointing to a story in it. They suspiciously looked at us. One of them came over to sit by me and started a conversation, where were we from type stuff? I tried to avoid him by concentration on the match. I was thinking we were made. I said I saw him reading On The Break and what he thought of it. He gave me some trite response then moved back over to his group. Lucky knew what was going on said to me don’t worry there is some guy who goes by Lucky Lawrence they probably think I am him. I must have been so nervous that I didn’t notice that Lucky was back to zero with this guy. I said why don’t we quit come back later after you get some rest a win it all. Lucky said the deal was we had to play to a winner or forfeit the bet. He was locked in. They were counting on Lucky’s old age to be a factor no doubt. I was concerned about Lucky s health the reason we were on this quest to begin with. It was now 10 pm I could barely stay awake and I am holding the money zee wiz. Pescado Grande started to argue with his girlfriend and she stormed off. What was that about?? Lucky won the game and broke and made the even balls again. He went on a run of 4 to be 5 ahead.. My side bet guy quit which was a relief. At this point he games went back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, this for an incredible 10 more hours. Eating snacks and drinking pop was getting tiresome. I wanted a good meal and some rest I was constantly fighting not thinking about Lucky health and how nice it would be to be home for Christmas, with my wife and my cat. It was now 8am hour to go until Bank of America which was gratefully next door would open at 9 so we could put the money in the most, safest place we could. Of course that much money would raise a red flag to the bank and IRS, but it would be safe considering where we were. We hadn’t won the money yet Merry Christmas or what…. To be continued….. O’Connor Cues Thomas O’Connor asked for a pool cue for his sixth birthday and receiving that cue influenced the next forty odd years of Tom’s life—first as a player and then as a craftsman. Combining his experience as a machinist in the aerospace industry with his interest in playing, Tom started making cues for himself. He began crafting cues with one lathe and much practical sense in a small workshop. As a player, he focused on producing a solid hitting player’s cue. Word of mouth soon brought requests for cues and Tom built many cues for players in the greater Los Angeles area, including world class players. In the summer of 2006, Tom looked up Hall of Fame Cuemaker Bert Schrager.

Having worked with Bert thirty years before, one thing led to another and Tom purchased Bert’s cuemaking shop in Lake Isabella. With the addition of four lathes

and a mill, several cues are in process. While continuing to craft solid cues for players, he is also creating detailed and uniquely patterned cues. The cues feature the finest of materials and hand craftsmanship. Utilizing a variety of designs and materials, one–and only one–cue is created. Ivory and abalone inlays combine with ebony and other exotic hardwoods for elegant cues. For others, Tom uses the grain of the wood to create naturally beautiful cues. Thus, just as you are an individual, so is each cue crafted by Tom. For a change of pace, Tom has built a few electric guitars, several wall clocks, a grandfather clock, and many walking canes (all are for sale as well). He continues to refurbish pool tables as well as re-felt local tables and repair cues. He enjoys talking about cues in his collection and cuemaking in general and will work with you to make the cue of your dreams a reality. Liz Cole closes out a stellar season at NWPA’s Year End Event On November 19-20th The Parlor in Bellevue, WA hosted the NWPA’s 7th and final tour stop of the 2011 Season. The tournament was ran on 10 9 foot Brunswicks and Rail2Rail Productions provided live streaming throughout the event. As always, The Parlor was a gracious host and even provided comedy club tickets to several of the entrants after the NWPA banquet hosted as a buffet style dinner at The Ultra Lounge. Some of the The Parlor’s upcoming events include The Vixen Gauntlet and Country Line Dancing on Wednesdays, Thursday/ Saturday football specials with 16 HD TVs and all kinds of door prizes and giveaways, DL Hughley on December 8-10, and Comic Search open auditions on December 15-17. 2012. In contention were Kimberly Kirk and Deby Welfringer, both players would have to have their best tournament of the year to have an opportunity. Kimberly would need to win the event, while Deby would need to finish 3rd. Twenty ladies came to play on Saturday morning, and unfortunately due to snow, a few of the tours’ top players were not in attendance. Matches started at 10 am, and the field was whittled down to 8 players who returned on Sunday. On the A side, Liz Cole squared off against Michelle Hughes (her first Sunday appearance), while Shelby Locati battled against recently crowned 2011 US Amateur Champion, Suzanne Smith. Liz and Suzanne both won their matches 7-4 and 7-2. Liz then defeated Suzanne 7-4 to secure her 6th final appearance of the season. On the B side, Kimberly Kirk played Jessica Orth and Deby Welfringer played Clodagh Lancaster. Both Kimberly and Deby defeated their opponents 7-5, and momentum from their morning wins propelled them through their second rounds where Kimberly defeated Shelby 7-6 and Deby defeated Michelle 7-3. The next match would prove to be a true test, for if Deby were to advance she would be guaranteed a 3rd place finish and take over 2nd place in the standings. Kimberly had different plans, as she was also in contention for that 2nd place spot, and ended up defeating Deby 7-2. Kimberly continued her superb play and defeated Suzanne 7-4 to secure her spot in the final against Liz. Path to the Final: Liz Cole: Andy R (6), Shari R (5), Kathy S (2), Michelle H (5), Suzanne S (4) and Kimberly Kirk: Bye, Sara M (0), loss to Michelle H (5), Andy R (3), Jessica O (5), Shelby L (6), Suzanne S (4) Kimberly won the lag. Straight out of the gate, Kimberly continued stroking the ball well to take a 3-0 lead, forcing Liz to take her break early to regain her composure. After Liz’s break, a couple untimely errors by Kimberly allowed Liz to tie up the match at 3 games each. Both ladies were shooting great and the match was alos tied at 4-4, 5-5, and 6-6, however in game 14, with an opportunity to tie the match again at 7, a hung 8 ball by Kimberly allowed Liz to take a two game lead 8-6. Kimberly then scratched on the break for the first time of the set in the next rack and Liz methodically ran out the rack to end Kimberly’s hopes of securing 2nd place in the standings. Congratulations Ladies, Great Tournament for you both. Congratulations to Jana Montour as well, who with her 2nd place position in the NWPA’s overall standings has earned her tour card. The third Saturday of the month, which is designated for Ma’s Big Shot handicap 9 ball tournament, fell on Nov. 19th this time. With 11 players paying a $15 entry fee plus a $5 green fee and the house adding $75 the pot was $225. Grand Master Stan Tourangeau of Canada sailed through the winners bracket to hold the point, even though he was the only one in the house who had to race to 7! He DIANE KRAUS, STAN TOURANGEAU continued to prevail over master player Diane Krauss who came from the losers bracket racing to 5, though she put up a good fight!! In the final outcome, Tad Sickler, a ‘B’ player racing to 4 took 3rd place for $50. Diane Kraus of Eugene in 2nd place won $75 and Stan Tourangeau took the coveted 1st place prize of $100!! We hope that more of you pool players out there will join us next month on Saturday December 17th for our next Big Shot 9 Ball Tournament!! With 30 or more players the house will add $300!! Ma’s Tavern in Albany, OR held their first Sunday of the month Scotch Doubles Tournament on Nov. 6, 2011. 6 teams paid their $5 entry fee plus $1 green fee per person and the 5 (recently recovered) pool tables were opened. With a $60 pot created by players, the house added $40 to bring the total to be won to $100!! Since the field was small, the usual format of 8-ball, race to 2 was increased to a race to 3. Many matches went to the hill before being won, extending the fun!! In the end 1st place was taken by Tad Sickler and Gayle Gould for $50. In 2nd place, Lonnie Bevard and Teresa Wydronek won $30. And $20 went to Tony Vanella and Shirley Holfelter for 3rd place. Ma’s next Scotch Doubles tournament will be Sunday Dec. 4th at 2pm. Come join in the fun!!!
