ELEANOR AND EMILYN CALLADO

Tiger West Coast Women’s Tour’s fifth stop was held at Family Billiards on the weekend of November 12 and 13, 2016. Mr. Delbert Wong, who has been a tour supporter since TWCWT’s start, had his staff open its doors promptly at 10:00 am to give players enough time to warm up. Now that we are approaching the end of this eight-stop season, players are trying their hardest to accumulate as many points as possible. At the end of the year, all players who participated for at least 4 of the 8 stops qualify for point money. Players are awarded points based on how they finish in our main events. Players who return for the Second Chance tournament on Sundays also earn an extra 5 points for participating. At the end of the season, all players who qualify get some money back based on their point total. This is one way of give back to the players who support our tour, whether they place in the money or not. The Tiger Buck incentive program also rewards players for

run outs after the break, bringing new players into the tour, executing and pocketing a legal jump shot, or snapping the 9 ball on the break. For this stop, we had a total of 30 players, including 3 returning players from previous years, as well as 5 brand new players to the tour. In the first bracket, we had Revelina Um (7) winning matches against Yuko Takahashi (6), Lori Elizabeth Moris–Burgesen (5) and Shawn Modelo (7). Eleanor Callado (7), currently ranked 1st based on tour points so far, got a bye in the first round and then won matches against Mili Chin (6) and Naomi Manuel (5) for a spot in the top 8. Sher Ahola (7), who continues to have a great year cashing in all stops so far, won matches against Denise Domingo (6), Olga Azarova (6) and Tammy Moreda (6). In the last bracket, we had another regular to the top 8, Leslie Bernardi (7), also getting a bye in the first round and then winning matches against Emilyn Callado (7) and Khahn Ngo (6) for a spot in the top 8. The four players who would compete on Sunday on the winners’ side were: Revelina Um (7) vs. Eleanor Callado (7) Sher Ahola (7) vs. Leslie Bernardi (7) On the one-loss side, in order to stay alive and make it to day 2, players had to win at least 4 additional matches on Saturday. The remaining players were: Emilyn Callado (7) vs. Olga Azarova (6) Khahn Ngo (6) vs. Lori Elizabeth MorisBurgesen (5) The TWCWT Board likes to highlight players who make it into the top 8 for the first time, as we all know how hard it is due to the close competition in the tour. Lori has played pool for many years, but took a break to raise her family. Just two years ago, she started to play pool again. Now in 2016, she has only participated in 1 stop prior to Family Billiards and was very happy with her performance. In order to make it to Sunday, she won matches against Alice Loo (6), Renee Mata (6), and Tammy Moreda (6). She would get to the hill against Khanh Ngo (6), but would not be able to close the match. The final score 6-4 in favor of Khanh. Another player who had to win many matches to stay alive was Emilyn Callado (7), who slowly got in stroke as her matches progressed. After losing her second match of the day to Leslie Bernardi on the winners’ side, she went on to defeat Moon Kim (6), Naomi Manuel (5), Olga Azarova (6),

Leslie Bernardi (7), Khanh Ngo (6) and Sher Ahola (7) to have a chance to challenge her sister, Eleanor Callado (7), who awaited her in the hot seat. For the final match of the day, Emilyn would have to beat Eleanor twice as we run a true double elimination tournament format. Both races would be a race to 7, since both players were rated as 7s. The handicap of this tour requires that players win the number of games as their rating. The Callado sisters both shoot at a very fast pace. Their skill level started to show as the match progressed. Any time one of them would miss a shot, the other one would get out. As many times before, the house was rooting for the underdog, Emilyn. Every time she has had a chance to YEVA PLOTNIKOVA, KAREN ZENG challenge her sister Eleanor, her game rises to a different level. You could see the intensity on her face, her quick and deep breathing patterns, and the focus she has while at the table. Eleanor, on the other hand, is much more confident at the table as she is used to being in the Hot Seat. However, if there is anyone who can touch her on the Tiger West Coast Women’s Tour, it is definitely her sister Emilyn. In the first set, Emilyn was ahead 6-4 and had an opportunity to make a 1 to 9 combo, which she executed, giving her the first set. The score for this match would be 7-4 for Emilyn. For the second race the match was even closer, the sisters continuing to display quality billiards. You could see Eleanor playing more safeties than Emilyn (who likes being more aggressive at the table and will capitalize on her sister’s mistakes). The game got to a 6-6/hill-hill match, Eleanor was on her way to running out and scratched after missing the 7 ball that was sitting at the bottom of the table. Emilyn took ball in hand with a tough leave which she hit well to then set herself up for an easy 8 and 9 ball. You could feel the adrenaline through that last shot as the 9 ball went down, and then Emilyn jumped up to hug her sister. The entire house was happy for Emilyn who, for the first time since her start in 2003, won a stop on the Tiger West Coast Women’s Tour.

No Shave November Benefit Tournament of Grand Coulee Dam, WA and Liz Dick of Nespelem, WA, took fourth place. Sterling George won the money for the 8 ball break. We had two big raffles; the 50/50, where Nico Ortiz won $50 and Alex Besemann won $50 with the other $100 going to Charlie Potts to help re-cover his pool tables. For Charlie Potts, Banks Lake Pub Owner November 19, 2016 The Banks Lake Pub in Grand Coulee Dam, Washington, held a Benefit tournament for Charlie Potts, owner of the Banks Lake Pub, to assist him in his fight against cancer. The tournament was 8ball, Mixed Doubles, Vegas rules, loser breaks, race to 5 on the A side and a race to 4 on the B side. We had 20 teams turn out for the event. Entrance fee was $15 with $5 added per player. $25 was paid to the first 8ball break and $25 was to be paid to the first break and run, but unfortunately, that money was never taken. Four spots were paid out to the placing teams. Sonny Redthunder of Elmer City, WA and Phyllis Fernandez of Spokane, WA, split the first and second place winnings with Shane Palmer and Lorena Dick, both from Nespelem, WA. Pool players frequently mention that magical state - “The Zone” - when they refer to a great performance at the table. “He was deep in The Zone, man.” “He was unconscious.” “It was just him and the balls.” We all talk about it as if we know what it is, but when we try to explain it to someone, we run out of words pretty quickly. We’re not going to nail it down fully here, but we’ll characterize it and try to identify possible triggers to help us get there. One of the problems in describing The Zone is the idea that it’s purely a “mental thing.” I say not quite. It’s a mindbody state. One of the primary characteristics of being in The Zone is that it is a time when mind & body are integrated and are performing together without conflict, i.e., in harmony. “Getting it together.” This is an ideal state for playing pool. We want our brains and our bodies both to contribute their best performances. Meanwhile, we also want to keep emotion, doubt, and distraction out of our game. Some players feel Focused Concentration is the key, the trigger that launches them into The Zone. Well, how do you “do” Focused Concentration? If you’re “doing” it, and you realize it, you’ve broken your concentration - you’re not there any more. I’d say concentration is both a symptom and a cause. It’s like smiling and feeling good. If you feel good, you smile. If you smile, you feel good. In that sense, if you can somehow focus and concentrate fully, you may fall into The Zone. By the same token, if you’re in The Zone, you’ll find you are fully focused and concentrated. People say pool is a mental game. So what about thinking? Well, yes, we have thoughts in The Zone, but they are not the “monkey chatter” thoughts that typically run through our heads all day long. They are not about worry, failure, what’s going on outside of the table space, and so on. They are not self-conscious or introspective, but rather they are much closer to pure “joyous function,” by which I mean it’s just you and the balls, and they are pretty much already in the pockets, but you’re not patting yourself on the back about it. Your success is due both to doing the right things well and to not interfering with that. Our culture is very goal-oriented, but zoning is a process thing. Teaching martial arts students to take smooth, safe falls, we talk about how a coin rolls along at its perfect speed, each part of the edge making full contact with the ground. No rush, no getting ahead of itself.

Playing pool in the zone, there is no hurry. Even though you might know the rack is gone, the joyous function, the reason we do this, is to fully live each moment of every shot. The one-ball is as beautiful as the nine-ball. Feeling the cloth slide against your fingertips as you set up is as excruciatingly fine as the roll of a ball. You can’t readily will yourself into The Zone. I try to remember my triggers. Just like having a pre-shot routine, you can have a pre-zone routine that might help you get there. You still have to remember to do it, and get out of the way so it can happen. It’s more of a “giving up” than a “making it happen.” Musicians talk about “sinking into the instrument.” This is the experience we’re seeking. When we merge with our instrument - the cue - we’re in The Zone. Contradictory concepts like “soft focus” and “relaxed concentration” make sense in The Zone, whereas in our everyday state, these ideas seem paradoxical. Try softening your eyes and allowing the balls or the pockets to become bigger. Concentrate without clenching anything up. Find anything about your body or your mental state that seems for you to be a symptom of being in The Zone. Your personal Pre-Zone Routine should feature that symptom. Maybe it’s one of the things mentioned above. Maybe it’s a quality of your breathing. Maybe it’s a certain rhythm of movement. Maybe it’s how your eyes feel. Find something and use it to get you to The Zone. Unfortunately for most of us, we can’t make it last. It’s a few seconds to a few minutes at a time. Maybe we can stay in the “region” for a longer time, though, and get back in on some shots or innings. If everything clicks, it might go a little longer, but awareness of time is another one of those things that knocks you out of The Zone. Jack Nicklaus is in The Zone as he approaches, sets up, and executes his shot, but he’s probably only in the region as he walks to the next shot. Become aware that you’re in The Zone and it’s over. Congratulate yourself on what you just did, and you’re out. You can’t maintain it. As you develop the skills and experience to a) play well enough to get into The Zone and b) trust it and let it be, you’ll tend to get more Zone-time. The present moment is all there is. Dwell upon a past shot or worry about a future shot and you’re out. As Obiwan Mosconi would say (if there were such a person), “Present shot, only shot.”

A FANCY FORCE-FOLLOW STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

This dated trick shot belongs to the category I prefer: the useful trick shots. It came in handy during quite a few games of 9- and 10-ball where I had a ball hanging by a pocket and the lowest numbered ball close to a rail. It made it so easy to pocket the hanging ball that it gave me very good odds to keep shooting. As shown, the 2-ball is in the middle of the short rail and frozen to it. We can’t cut it in the corner because an opponent’s ball is blocking that pocket. But if we have the right approach angle which is quite wide and marked by the two green solid lines, we can try to hit the 2-ball full using a lot of top spin on the Cue Ball. We can either use a 12 o’clock and 2 tips of English or an 11:30 and even a 12:30 hit, depending on the table. The second solution will work better if the table plays short. The stroke will need to be a speed 3.5 - 4. The CB will hug the rail, after hitting the 2-ball and pocket the 6-ball in the corner, while the 2 ball gets either repositioned in zone “1” or it may even end up in the same corner pocket after travelling 4 rails. If you want to show off this shot to your friends, you will need to pocket both balls at once. Thus, pick a 12 o’clock hit on the CB and change only one variable: the CB position. If the 2-ball comes long, move the CB a little to the left; vice versa if the 2-ball comes short.

Recently in an on-line discussion someone asked for a game that could be played on fairly equal terms between players of very different skill levels. There were some suggestions of short races and huge spots but those don’t really solve the problem. One game that gives C players a pretty good chance to beat the pros is Mum Pool. It’s an interesting novelty game that should be good for some laughs if everyone takes it in the right spirit. I first heard of Mum Pool fifty years ago at the Student Union where I learned to play. The rules were published in 1961 in a newsletter for pool room proprietors called “Chalk Up!” that was produced by the A.E. Schmidt Company of St. Louis. It was the first in a series of off-beat games intended to promote more play. We had a lot of fun with it. Here are the rules: Mum Pool is a game for several players -- four or more is good. Draw for shooting order. Each player takes only one shot when it is his turn. The rules: 1. Rack any nine balls in a diamond shape -- the numbers make no difference during the game. 2. A player who commits any foul or violates any of the following special rules is out of the game. The goal is to be the last player left. 3. The breaker prior to breaking must tap the table with his cue and say “Mum.” After that all of the following rules apply to all players left in the game. 4. The shooter is subject to all ball fouls, just as if you were playing eight or nine ball, but no particular ball has to be hit first. Touching an object ball is a foul, as are the usual: scratching, ball onto the floor, no cushion after contact, etc. The following are special fouls that come into force starting with the break: 5. Breaking without saying “Mum.” 6. Chalking. 7. Talking -- this includes grunting and groaning. 8. Resting the cue on the floor. 9. Sitting down. 10. Interfering with the shooter. 11. Using the mechanical bridge. 12. Shooting out of turn or taking more than one shot on your turn. 13. Shooting with either foot off the floor -- both must be on the floor. 14. Pocketing the last object ball on the table. (If the last ball is pocketed, it spots on the foot spot or the head spot if blocked.) There are several new skills that you will need. Simple sign language is useful -- He’s out! -- but everyone pointing at the person who just forgot not to chalk will probably be clear enough. We all quickly learned to rest our cues on the tops of our feet. The no bridge rule combined with both feet on the floor makes the upper shot in the diagram an effective safety -you may want to learn a little one-handed

technique. The lower shot is also a big problem for the shooter if that is the last object ball sitting in the pocket. If you sink the ball, you’re out, but you also have to get a hit and a cushion. Learn to shoot softer than you ever have before. When we played, the eliminated players would try to encourage fouls by the players still in the game, such as by talking or chalking. The original rules specified that you played until the first player was eliminated so there was only one loser. If that’s how you play, I guess he could buy the next round. We played that the single winner got the pot. Good luck and may the quietest player win. (Five years of the newsletter mentioned above was published as a booklet. SIMPLICITY: THE ULTIMATE SOPHISTICATION Applying the correct fundamentals is a critical part of any pool player’s game. However, learning effective strategy is just as important to maintain a high-level of consistency. The primary reason professional players are more successful than intermediate players is because they are much more efficient at managing the game. Simply put, pro players are much better at capitalizing on the weakness areas of their opponents.

executing the shot is to strike about 1/8 of the right side of the object ball with lots of right spin. You will want to practice the shot until you become proficient at leaving the object ball on the middle of the end rail. The right spin will aid you at leaving the cue ball on the opposite end of the table. Once you practice shooting the shot with correct speed you will become very proficient in executing it. In fact, it will become almost automatic.

One strategy pros use is called “knitting.” You might be asking yourself “What is knitting?” and “How can it help me play a better game of pool?” The term “knitting” should not be confused with the billiards term “nit,” which is a player or gambler who refuses to bet or wager on a relatively evenly matched game. “Knitting” on the other hand, is doing something simple during a complex game situation. The first thing a player should do is start with then end in mind and try to figure out what their opponent will like the least. Players need to understand that usually this will involve shooting a shot that is fairly simple to execute. Remember to never look for something difficult to do during a high-pressure situation. Many times, shooting the most difficult shot will get you beat. When weighing your options, try to think about the best place to leave your opponent. In 9-ball, many times it will become impossible to snooker your opponent from the contacting the lowest numbered ball on the table. One thing to think about is leaving plenty of green between cue ball and object ball. Another powerful tool is leaving the object ball sitting near either of the two end rails. You might ask, “Why is the end cushion a problem?” The answer lies with the fact that balls positioned in this location are often difficult to pocket. Several years ago I was playing in the finals of the Billiard Café 9-Ball Championship in Lancaster, Kentucky. I was left with a difficult off angle bank shot. However, instead of shooting the difficult shot I decided to play a simple safety (as shown in Figure 1). The safety won the tournament. It was the best shot, because I could execute it a higher percentage of the time.

The shot below is a little more difficult to execute but can be mastered after shooting it a few times. The key to this shot is to kick to the bottom rail first with lots of left spin. Again, striking about 1/8 of the object ball using the correct speed. Remember to use lots of sidespin. This will serve to aid you in repositioning the cue ball on the opposite end of the table.

Many times the difference between winning and losing may be buying yourself another trip to the table. It’s important to weigh all of your options and to always give yourself the best opportunity to win. Any time you can gain even a one or two percent advantage, it is important to exercise that option. Even small percentages add up over the course of time.

In Memory of successful. I do not remember who won in the men’s division but I do know that Sheree Larson took first in the women’s division and Judy Griffith took second. In 1995, the organization held its state/regional event in Seaside, Oregon, at the Convention Center. At this time, the rest of the Board of Directors resigned and the only two left who believed in this endeavor were Sheree Larson and Judy Griffith. Sheree and Judy had already begun preparation of Constitution and By-laws for the organization and had agreed on the name of the Western BCA Poolplayers Association. 1996, Judy and Sheree approached Bill Mildenberger about joining them in their efforts, and the event was held at the Kelso Fairgrounds, in Kelso, Washington. We had both 8-ball and 9-ball events. In 1997, we went back to Seaside, with both 8-ball and 9-ball events. During the summer of 1997, Judy and Sheree went to Chinook Winds to talk to them about hosting the pool event. They then arranged several meetings with Frank Lanaro at Chinook Winds and requested that Bill attend these meetings also. 1998, the regional tournament was held at Chinook Winds Casino, both 9-ball and 8-ball. We had to cancel the 9-ball due to late arrival of the pool tables. We then decided to hold the first separate 9-ball tournament in November of 1998. And from then on, we held separate tournaments for the 8-ball and 9-ball. Due to medical and various other reasons, Sheree Larson left the association.

Sheree lost her battle with cancer on August 18, 2016. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and had been in remission for four years and then in 2014 her cancer returned. She was married to Mark Larson for many years. A celebration of life was held for her on September 10th in Astoria, Oregon.

Sheree was responsible for bringing the Billiard Congress of America to the Pacific Northwest. In 1993 it all began with a telephone call from Sheree Larson to Judy Griffith. They held a meeting in Salem, Oregon with Michelle Pecora, Nancy Gould, Linda Volmer, Sheree and Judy. It was decided to go ahead with the idea. They all wanted to give pool players a player’s league and also a state/regional championship for the majority of the players who would never go to Las Vegas to play in the National Championships. After a lot of planning and discussion the organization was started and the first state/regional championships were held at Sharkey’s in Salem, Oregon, 1994. This first year we had 95 total members to the association. We had both 9-Ball and 8-Ball events. In 1994 the organization also held a 9-ball event at the Cue Club (not sure of the actual name) in Salem, Oregon. This was to accommodate the under 21 members that we had. Nobody under age 21 showed up, but the event was

In 1999, Judy Griffith took one year off from the Board of Directors but continued to run her leagues. From 1999 to 2004 we held our regional tournaments at Chinook Winds. Also, in 2004 the Billiard Congress of American sold the league system to Mark Griffin. They no longer wished to continue with the league system. They wanted to concentrate their efforts on the annual trade show. John Lewis, former director of the league system for BCA, went on to form American CueSports (ACS). Sheree will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She taught me a lot about the administrative side of billiards. Even when she retired from pool I could always call her and go over things with her and she always had an answer to my questions and would help me with possible solutions. She was very intelligent and a very quick thinker. She always looked at every possible scenario and the consequences of those scenarios. She passed on to me the golden rule of running tournaments – do not do for one that you are not willing to do for all. What a simple concept.

Wyoming was represented with 22 players from Rawlins, Saratoga, Cheyenne, Laramie and Casper who battled it out for the 8-ball title. The eventual champion Perry Gilbert of Casper, WY went through the field undefeated en route to another 1st place finish that is just another reminder that the “P-Dog” is a threat to win any tournament that he enters! Tournament runner up honors went to Josh McCloskey of Laramie, WY who shot strong all weekend and whose only losses were to Perry Gilbert. Josh’s Dad, Dean McCloskey, had a strong showing during the weekend and finished up in the 3rd place spot only losing to Perry and Josh along the way. Ricardo Martinez of Rawlins, WY continues to be a factor in each tournament and he took 4th place over the two day tournament and also only suffered losses to Josh and Perry. The 5th place tie spots went to the Cisneros brothers, Johnny and Chico, of Cheyenne, WY so that tells how strong the shooting was this weekend in holding those two accomplished players to 5th! These tournaments continue each month with $1,000 added to each tournament The Andy Cloth Nubbins Memorial October Pool Tournament that was held at Duke’s Bar & Grill in Saratoga, WY on October 28th & 29th saw Wyoming players from Rawlins, Saratoga, Evanston, Cheyenne and Gillette tussle with a handful of tough players from the Denver, CO area in a battle of the Saratoga (an 8-ball & 10-ball hybrid) game! The eventual champion Adam King of Denver, CO played great all tournament and just as his name implies he went undefeated to claim the crown and another 1st place finish! Tournament runner up honors went to Monte Thayer of Rawlins, WY who had a strong shooting tournament and whose only losses were to Adam King. The “always gracious” Kenny Wilson also from Rawlins, WY won six consecutive matches after a 2nd round defeat before losing to Thayer to get back to the finals and finished up in the 3rd place spot. Ryan Henry of Denver, CO who has been really coming on strong as of late also won six consecutive matches after dropping a opening match loss to his road dog, Justin Rekemeyer, to post a 6-2 mark over the two day tournament and a 4th place finish. WITH ALL 28 qualifying events now complete, the team to represent the United States of America at the 23rd annual Mosconi Cup is now finalized and there is one change from the team that represented the US at the Tropicana last December. The annual transatlantic showdown takes place at the Alexandra Palace, London December 6-9, 2016.

2016 Mosconi Cup: American Five Set for London Showdown become the definition of hard work. He brings tremendous Mosconi Cup experience and just as important the “hang loose” attitude when facing adversity which will assist the less experienced players. He was just inducted into the Hall of Fame which indicates his standing in the sport.

“Justin Bergman is the final pick and his physical stature belies the immense dimension of his pool abilities. Justin is a no-nonsense player who does not flinch during the many hard fought battles certain to occur. Confident and very polished despite being young plus this being his third Mosconi Cup, he will be looked upon as a solid presence within the middle of a very skilled line-up. Last year he was number one statistically for a Team USA and this year we anticipate a similar performance.”

Topping the rankings once again, and by some margin, is Shane Van Boening who will be making his tenth appearance in American colors. He will be joined by Mike Dechaine and Skyler Woodward who came second and third on the ranking respectively. The two wildcards are the highly experienced Rodney Morris who, lik like Van Boening will be making his tenth appearance, and Justin Bergman who comes into the side for the third time.

LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (Nov. 15, 2016) — It’s about leaving a legacy. Sure, there’s perks too. Like a getaway to Tampa, one of the premier vacation destinations in the world. An allexpenses paid trip to a pro event next year courtesy of the APA. Oh, and let’s not forget the championship trophy - a combination of marble and bronze that more closely resembles a piece of fine art than something awarded at a tournament. But winning the U.S. Amateur Championship is all about the title. It’s about leaving one’s mark on the sport of pool. It’s about having your name and your accomplishment forever etched in history. That’s what drove more than 2,000 of North America’s top amateur players to try and qualify. That’s what brought 128 men and 33 women to Stroker’s in Palm Harbor, Fla., in early November to compete in this year’s U.S. Amateur Championship. Parks Wins R ecord 4th Title Brian Parks of Bakersfield, Calif., has already left his legacy on the sport. The three-time U.S. Amateur Champ had little to prove. He’d been there and done that. In the final round, Parks would face young Daniel Gambill of Hickory, N.C. Gambill, another U.S. Amateur Championship regular who’s poised to be part of the event’s next generation of perennial stars. Gambill had gone undefeated throughout the event and was playing arguably the best pool of his career. The finale began in the 8-Ball set at Parks choosing. Gambill opened with two quick wins. Parks regrouped for two wins of his own. They’d go on to split the next four games and were dead-locked at 4-4 heading into the 9-Ball set. That’s where Parks shined. He won seven straight games, giving Gambill few chances at the table. What moments before looked like it might be a hill-hill nail-biter, was suddenly over faster than anyone expected. Parks had won 11-4, and secured his fourth U.S. Amateur Championship title. A gracious Gambill was the first to congratulate him, understanding all too well who’d defeated him, and knowing that his time would eventually come. Parks will compete in the 2017 U.S. Open, and his name will once again be added to the Larry Hubbart Trophy of Champions. Gambill finished as Runner-up, while Adams finished in 3rd Place – it was both players top finish in U.S. Amateur Championship competition. Fernando Vaca of Gaithersburg, Va., finished in 4th Place. Brett Stottlemyer of Pasadena, Md., and David Singleton of Port Orange, Fla., tied for 5th Place. Robin Parker it takes newcomers a few years of U.S. Amateur Championship competition to be in a position to take home the title. Maybe it’s the combination 8-Ball and 9-Ball format. Maybe it’s the level of competition. Whatever it is, it certainly wasn’t the case for Robin Parker of Birmingham, Ala. After failing to qualify in a Preliminary Round five years ago, Parker not only qualified, she steamrolled this year’s Women’s U.S. Amateur Championship field in just her first appearance. Her most difficult test would come from Jackie Blomlie of Ocala, Fla. Parker sent Blomlie to the one-loss bracket early on the final day of competition, but Blomlie would put herself in position to avenge the loss by ousting Lea for a spot in the final round. In the finals, Blomlie got on the board first with a win in the 8-Ball set, and led 3-1 after four games. An unfazed Parker would take the next two games, and evened the match 3-3 as the ladies moved into the 9-Ball set. Blomlie again got on the board first in the 9-Ball set. Just when it looked as though she might open up the match, Parker rose to the occasion, and reeled off six straight wins for a dominating 9-4 win. The victory secures Parker a spot in a 2017 WPBA pro event, while Blomlie had to settle for a strong Runner-up finish. Former champion Betty Lea (’06) finished in 3rd Place in her first U.S. Amateur Championship competition in several years.
