Story & Photos By Jackie Clark Well once again The Falls Club started the New Year off right, with $5,000 guaranteed paid out. This was our 6th annual January open 9-ball tournament at the Falls Club located in Post Falls, Idaho. Every year the players that come for our tournament seem to be better and better. This Northwest s best-kept secret isn t a secret anymore, with players coming from all over WA, Montana, Oregon, Calgary BC and as far away as Salt Lake City. All the tournaments we have Edwin Montal and at the Falls Club guarantees added money, Randy Camantigue thanks to owner Johnny Carr. The snow fell hard and fast Friday night and into Saturday morning, leaving our area with 7 plus inches on the ground by start time Saturday. Once again the WBPPA will be heading for Lincoln City, Oregon for their Regional Championships. The five day 8-Ball Championships will start February 27, 2002 and run through March 3, 2002. by: Kirstin Pires Despite winning three of the top 10 tournaments of 2001, including the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship, Cory Deuel needed a solid performance in the year s final event to earn the first Iwan Simonis/BD Power Index points championship. The 24-year-old Deuel was dogged to the finish by pesky Jose Parica, who finished less than 100 points behind despite failing to win a single title. The diminutive Philippine native posted two second-place and two third-place finishes, placing just behind Deuel in all four instances. The Simonis/BD Power Index points title earned Deuel a $5,000 bonus. Developed by Billiards Digest as an accurate system for measuring performance across the variety of independent tournaments that make up the men s professional pool landscape, the Power Index first measures the strength of an event (prize money, format, size and strength of field), then calculates points earned based on the event s Tournament Factor. The higher the Tournament Factor, the more points earned. (Note: Due to the general confusion the $800,000 Tokyo Open - won by Efren Reyes - the event was not included in the 2001 Power Index.)

While the billiard world is still working to get cue sports into the Olympics as a demonstration or medal sport, the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) is working with industry manufacturers to support Team USA with billiard tables and accessories at the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah. Stephen Ducoff, BCA Executive Director, received a request from the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) for billiard tables, cues, balls, racks and chalk for the Team USA High Performance Centers (HPCs), facilities created for the exclusive use of athletes and coaches representing the United States. We received an overwhelming response from the billiard community to support the Team USA athletes, said Mr. Ducoff, Several manufacturers offered to supply both HPCs with everything they need, but we decided to include as many of our business members as possible to create even greater industry exposure and impact. I was tempted to make this short and tell you all just to call me. It sounded great at first but you would all be wondering what kind of an arrogant fool is this guy . Education can only help us all and maybe keep you from calling Uncle Fred, who used to reupholster furniture, to recover your table. A pool table is really not the same as a piece of furniture. Hopefully you are not trying to get the right english when you sit on your sofa. Many establishments have invested allot of time and money to earn a good reputation with their billiards playing customers. To keep that reputation you need to invest in the quality of your table and it s maintenance. There are quite a few individuals offering recovery and maintenance services but not all of them understand exactly what it takes to keep your table in professional playing condition. While a seasoned player may be able to see and compensate for the defects in a poorly maintained table, a table that is cleaned, groomed and has consistency of play will keep your pool players happy and they in turn will keep the cash box full.

On The Level...
We have all heard the cry the table isn t level . But, is it really out of level? There are other reasons that a table will play as if it were not level. Before you mess with a perfectly level table look at a couple of other things. First, is your cue ball out of balance? To check for level, use an object ball to roll across the table, NOT a cue ball. Cue balls for magnetic return tables are drilled and plugged to trip the return. Some inexpensive cue balls are out of balance right out of the box. A good cue ball will start at about $15-$20. Are cue balls disappearing with your shadier customers? Try keeping a set of good ones in the back for your league players. Second, what about your last recovery? Was the cloth installed properly? Is there glue on the top of the slate? Glue on the top of the slate will create a trampoline effect. Balls might roll away from the pocket or rail. The only way to deal with this is to have the table recovered again at which time you must remove all of the glue from the top of the table. NEVER let anyone glue the cloth to the top of your table. Regarding your article in the Dec. 2001 issue Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance . We recently purchased a nice pool table for our vacation home from Golden West Billiards in Portland Oregon. Upon completion of delivery and set up we were given guidelines for proper care and maintenance, which included never vacuum, always brush in one direction . I have owned a 9' table in our own home for over 30 years and this is consistent with what I orginally learned as proper cleaning and what I was told by the table service company that moved our table 5 years ago. I am interested as to how or why there are two completely opposite points of view on proper table cleaning. Thanks in advance for any additional light you may be able to shed on this subject. As you might have noticed from the article, my advice was mostly directed at tavern and billiard hall owners. These people usually (not always) invest in a better grade cloth and hopefully a decent grade install. Unfortunately, some home tables are installed with a cloth that might not stand up to the ol shop vac. Especially if the fit is a bit lacking. Also, the establishments that sell you a table are in the business to sell - brushes, more cloth, etc. I am not saying that the advice was given to you under false pretenses, just that the information your salesperson had might not be from the experience of maintaining hundreds of tables. Remember that products and technology change and what was once true may not be now. There is a type of cloth that is not the tightest weave, it sheds badly and would need to have this treatment. I have commercial operators whose tables jam up constantly because they have used it. This type of cloth can wear very quickly if you aren t very gentle with it. Of course I advise them to change it. If this method of care works for you, great! Keep at it. The tables that see league play see a lot more dirt and grime and need to have slightly different care than what happens at home. Commercial tables have ball returns and mechanisms that get gummed up because of dirt and shedding, a vacuum is the way to go here. Have a question for The Pool Table Guy? Thanks for the question! Three Balls In One Shot Here is a three ball shot that you can set up and master. If your friends don t know the secret to the shot they won t be able to pocket all three balls. Place the three balls as shown. Take note that ball A is slightly farther away from the long rail than ball B. All three balls are froze to each other. Place cue ball as shown. Here is the secret to this shot. You must wet the contact point between balls A and B. If you don t, ball B will hit far up the long rail before it gets to its intended corner pocket because of throw. Wetting the contact point with spit will cancel the friction, thus cancel the throw. With a moderate stroke hit the cue ball with high right english, hitting ball A first, then caroming off to ball C. Ball A will go in the side pocket, ball B will go in the far corner first, followed by ball C. Be sure to have a designated driver if you win too many beers off of this shot in one night. OTB

Hey Cheese, Believe it or not today was my first time to your website. I haven t even thought about pool in two years, but now that I am getting involved a little bit again your website is a real pleasure to see. I still can t believe I haven t been to it before this, I guess it just never hit me and I certainly didn t know how nice of a site it was. By the way this is T.R. Olson from up north of you so you know what angle all of this is coming from. I really got a kick out of your article on sharking and I am really glad to see that I am not the only one who notices. Most of the time people are so busy admiring some players that they fail to notice the same things that those of us who are intent on kicking some butt notice. The type of critical things that cost you matches. I personally was on a path to single handedly put an end to that stuff, but got cut off by some of life s little detours. I have recently come into some money and one of my biggest dreams is to organize a tournament circuit, open to all who wish to play and appropriately handicapped with some serious corporate sponsorship and also to involve juniors and women s divisions. These tournaments will be held in places other than bars and pool halls and promoted more as a family atmosphere than has been done in the past. (Not that a little of that isn t good for the sole) Anyway, to shorten this up a bit sharking and cheating of any kind will result in loss of the privilege to play for a sizable amount of dough with no exceptions, one strike and your out. That is to include talking out loud at all during your match or leaving your seat at all and etc.. Nothing aggravates me more and if you say anything it makes you out to be a real a-hole. Well, enough on that subject too. One other thing I wanted to say is that all who play pool deeply appreciate your contribution to this game, but here is my own personal pat on the back. It takes a certain kind of individual to make this there life or a such a big part of it and your sacrifice does not go unnoticed. But, there is always a but, you said something to me at that big tourney at the eagles in Bozeman that kind of ruffled my feathers. You asked me how I did in that Spokane tournament and when I told you, you said yeah Jeff said you had an easy road. I would presume that you know what kind of field there was in that tourney, but there were no easy roads. I places 7-8 or 9-12 or something like that and my two losses came to Dan Louie and John Horsefall, not exactly chopped liver if you know what I mean? No big deal anyway look forward to a response. Bouquets February - Valentine s Day. Hearts and flowers for our sweethearts of choice. Life christens us with a bounteous bouquet of choices. Sometimes we consciously craft those decisions, and sometimes our hearts play Captain. Choose to follow or to lead; choose to run; choose to hold real still. Sometimes we refuse accountability for those choices; sometimes we rejoice at being given the light to see our destiny. Sometimes we listen to the Spirit; sometimes we run raving away, covering our ears like the first little monkey. (No - I am not going to discuss what the other two little monkeys were doing!) Pool is such an exercise in choices. Chalk. Cue. Locale. Opponent. Partner. Team. All that, just to get to the table. Then infinite paisleys of patterns array and display for us on the break after we choose which break to use! Serious players are not usually afloat in the USS Wishy-Washy though we sometimes bob about in its wake. Our cue is the rudder guiding us through a plethora of choices obviously not unerringly, or we would all be pros! I sometimes believe that pool is a great natural therapy device. (Yes, I know many of us probably NEED therapy sometimes not until after we have played this game for a time ). The sight and sound of the balls spinning, clacking, falling, is comforting and calming. Visceral satisfaction is found in making good choices great safeties and table runs are our friends. The pocketing of balls a visual putting away of things; making order of chaos; patiently parting the pattern from its colorful camouflage. Even the frustration this all sometimes engenders has a balance within it. Pool is, after all, another snapshot in time of our other life; that life where felt implies feelings and not greens; where our choices guide us onto or away from the path to fulfillment, not only to the successful completion of the project at hand. Balance beckons from within and from without (which is undoubtedly why there is both 8-Ball and 9-Ball!). Well, here is to good choices and fun therapy ! YOUTHS THINK IT S COOL TO PLAY POOL IN SCHOOL from: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development
Instead of running laps around the track or doing pushups, junior high and high school students in some parts of the country are playing pool. The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) and the Billiard Education committee (BEF), the charitable arm of the BCA, are doing their part to send pool to school. The committee held during the fourth quarter of 2001 to discuss plans to expand billiard education classes into schools around the country. Stephen Ducoff, BCA Executive Director, implemented a BCA board directive by forming the BCA Education Committee to develop a comprehensive youth-oriented program to bring a new generation of players and consumers to the sport. The Education Committee is charged with developing billiard education programs and hands-on experience to promote billiards as a lifetime sport , explained Mr. Ducoff, Committee members aim to establish a specific school program curriculum that certified billiard instructors can teach in cooperation with supervisory physical education teachers. BCA certified instructor Barton Mahoney attended the meeting and said the BCA was extremely supportive and very excited about the youth program. BCA staff liaison John Lewis feels quite happy with the current success of the established youth programs and hopes to increase the number of programs nationwide. One very successful billiard physical education program is at Del-Campo High School and taught by high school instructor Madeline Davis and billiard instructor Barton Mahoney. Del-Campo High has over 2,000 students and is located in Sacramento, CA. Every year 200 students sign up to take the class, but only the first 70 are accepted. For an hour and a half, Monday through Friday, students meet at HardTimes billiards to learn about the history of billiards, skill development, strategies, rules
and competition. Some of these kids have told me that the pool class is motivating them to attend their other classes, Ms. Davis told the Education Committee. This program gives all students an opportunity at developing their personalized sporting development. It gives them [kids] a chance to become a competitor where they may not otherwise have a chance. Billiards is for all people; that is the strong aspect of this program, said Mr. Mahoney. Youth programs will be funded by resources redirected from the BCA All American Tour (AAT), an amateur tour coordinated by the BCA and sponsored with monetary and product donations from manufacturers and retailers. While the AAT was a popular and successful event, the BCA feels the resources would be better spent on bringing a new generation of players into the game. We feel this program is an investment that will last a lifetime. The future of the sport lies in our younger generation of players and we hope to cultivate a life-long interest from an early age, said Amy Long, BCA Director of Marketing and Business Development. Mahoney, Davis, Tom Riccobene, coordinator of a weekly junior program in Albuquerque, NM, and BCA staff liaisons John Lewis and Bill Meacham gathered to plan a three-year course of action to propose to the BEF and the BCA Board of Directors. The committee is considering attending and presenting at various youth-oriented national conventions to increase awareness as well as inform other instructors about this fun alternative to the standard physical education class. The Billiards Congress of America is a national nonprofit organization, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, whose mission is to provide exceptional value to our Members by promoting and growing cue sports worldwide.

I have played the game of pool for many years and met a lot of great players. One stands out from the rest and I will refer to this player as this player . A couple of years ago this player was on the edge of becoming a B level player. Not being satisfied this player took some lessons from a great player and soon this player began learning what it took to be a top player. With many hour of dedicated practice this player started to get very good and would occasionally win a tournament. Here is where the story takes a turn. This player started barking and nipping at other players wallets and frequently this player would win too. After several years of hard work this player is becoming a great player, only to see this player bark louder and more often. Now
this player is taking bigger bites out the wallets of other players and that s great. In honor of this player some of the bears are thinking of erecting a statue, built in this player s honor, and put in one of the pool rooms around town so others will know how great you are too. After all, you can only tell a small percent of the people by yourself no matter how loud you are. I want you to know you don t need to bark anymore. You ve proven you can play the game, but if I ever draw you in a major tournament and win, I m going to brag about it for the next ten years. Ha Ha from the Master Pooh Bear

Overcoming the risk factor is one of the greatest thrills in pool, feeding our egos and generally inspiring us to continue the progression of improvement towards a higher level of play. It s like an obsession or addiction. Once you ve had a taste of it, you want more and more. Occasionally the risk factor overcomes us. We re stuck with the agony of defeat . What a terrible feeling! After a few outings of losing many people quit playing altogether, when in fact they should humbly bow their head, walk out the door and go home. The smarter person would sit down, replay and analyze the whole match using their memory recall. Just like watching a video you can pick out your mistakes, log them in your memory banks and head for

2020, A Pool Odyssey with Art and Pat
By Andrew Monstis Story dedicated to my friend Art Schuff and mostly was written before he died in 1995. From Part Two: Art edged his bubble closer to a five-sided table, where five balls sat in the middle, surrounded by five extra-wide pockets. A flashing neon sign above the table announced the game as Scatterblaster. Apparently the object was to pocket all five balls by smashing them in as fast as possible a speed game. Hey, Pat! he exclaimed, peering more closely at the players. See those two guys? Isn t that Steve and Q?

Yeah, it s Steve, the Crash King! boomed Pat, causing the wiry old man at the table to look up in surprise. And Q, how re ya doin ? Heyyyy, long time no see! Steve grinned delightedly, giving Art and Pat the old high five. After a few minutes of realizing they were all still alive and remembering old times, Steve went back to his game. Interesting game you re playing there, Steve! Pat couldn t resist saying. Remember this game, Art? Steve is the Master of Scatter Blasting! He s been trying to play this game, or a form of it, for 35 years. Fast and wild we used to call Steve the Crash Rat! The guy who always could find the cheese from the old Sewickly s 9-ball ring games! At one time it had been the longest-running regular ring game anywhere from North Dakota to the Pacific Ocean. I am pretty good at it, claimed Steve, undaunted by the teasing, and it s the only game I play. Now it s one of the biggest games around. There s even a Scatterblaster table on Space Station Europa. I m going to the World Crash Finals in Tokyo next month with Quenton. He s the city runner-up. Q nodded modestly, still slim and smiling and quiet, and joined the group. Everyone had a story to tell, so Q rounded up a couple more hoverbubbles, Steve gave up the table for a game or two to some kids who were anxious to work off some energy, and they all settled in to visit. It seemed, Pat thought, like they remembered playing more than anyone really could have. Once they started telling their stories they were all convinced they each could write a book about their escapades. They recalled Ron the One Tooth Alien, Brian The Lab Rat, Tasmanian Devil Dave, Eric Von Pool, Jack the Bet Joey, Easy Money Rich, The master Drew. There was a story about each of
them. They laughed at another story Steve told, about the time a group of friends went to an out-of-town w e e k l y tournament and on the way back, stopped for a m i d n i g h t breakfast. After the meal each put down his money, including a tip. One of the guys got up and said he would pay the bill, and scooped it all up and headed for the cashier. The only thing was, he used everyone s tip money to pay for his own meal. We all laughed at that. Art said, Like he never thought we knew. Whatever happened to him anyway? Quenton said, He became a millionaire. Over a whole lot of laughter about that, Steve and apprentice Q took the table back from the kids and demonstrated Scatterblaster for Art and Pat. Looks like you ve applied your old skills to this new game, Art remarked. Well, luck is the biggest factor, Quenton said. You have to feel it, and have psychic ability to master the luck of the game. As a matter of fact, we re writing a book on Science of Scatterblaster. Hmmm, said Pat, Good luck with that . Say, we re here to play some nine-ball. We were talking about pool and decided to see if we could still play. But they don t even know what it is around here! There isn t even a regulation table! What s with that? Aw, nobody plays 9-ball anymore, and they haven t for a long time, said Steve, crashing into the rack. Too spendy. Only some of the real old-timers know that game and they only play on antique home tables. Steve finished his game in 15 seconds and came over and joined us as Quenton racked yet again. So what s up in the pool world these days, Steve? Art asked. We re completely out of it, you know. Just found my cue in the basement today, and that got us started even thinking about it. Simple. Steve shrugged his shoulders. People started playing slower games to get their money s worth. We ve got new games now like Two-Pocket, Five-Rails or Better, Left and Right, and Thirty-Count Practice Strokes.

What s that last one? Pat asked. Oh, you know, where you stroke at least 30 times before you shoot like chewing your food before you swallow. It takes about an hour to play Thirty Strokes. I ll bet you know who invented that game. And One-Pocket lasted for a while. The slower the game the less you had to pay. But then, on the time tables, you couldn t play the new slower games, because it would cost $20 a game to play. It got pretty confusing there for a while. But finally, prices stabilized and all these new innovative games were established and they stuck, but no one resumed playing any 9-ball! In 2018, The Olympic Committee and UPC that s the Universal Pool Congress, housed in the New World Trade Center now encouraged different types of pool games. I think there are over 40 World Championship games and 30 of those are in the Extreme Olympics. Steve paused, said he needed a drink, and this time, like magic, a holographic wench appeared to take his order and, where no one was standing. Pat marveled at how fast a real hoverserver appeared with the drink. How cool that a holograph could be programmed to take an order, which would then filled and returned in no time. Have you ever watched the Interactive Satellite Pool Channel? Steve wiped froth from his mouth, Twenty-four hours of nothing but pool. You can get a lot of info on that channel. You can design your own shots and check out the outcomes a very creative tool. The ISPC was originally on cable, but nowadays everyone uses satellite. Some of us around here got together and bought one and sent it up a couple of years ago. Pat and Art looked each other for about the tenth time that night. But even the unreal was beginning to seem real. Have you been down to the third deck? asked Q. No? Well, lets go down. They only let the serious players down there, but we can get in. Jeff Haakinson Cruises Through Rack em B & Under Field by Bret Baker
Owner, Dave Smith and Rack em Billiards held their 3rd B & Under Tournament on January 12th & 13th. The field of 47 was the largest field yet. Much of the continued interest in these tournaments can be contributed to the unique idea of having a free consolation tournament for anyone losing their first two matches on Saturday in the main draw. This allows 10 players in each tournament to go home with money in their pocket. After the first three tournaments, 28 different players have won money in these tournaments. This particular weekend belonged to Jeff Haakinson. Jeff is an up and coming player and came in with a lot of confidence, having just finished 3rd in the Reno USPPA tournament in December. He cruised through his first five matches and then waited to see who would survive the oneloss side of the bracket. The one-loss side of the bracket also had a great story brewing. Ken Smith, after losing his first match on Saturday, refocused, and ground out a nine match winning streak to meet Jeff in the finals. To win the tournament, Ken would have to stretch his winning streak to eleven, as he had to defeat Jeff twice to win the tournament. Jeff s game was just too strong on this day, and he defeated a wore out Ken in one set, 5-3. Dave Smith would like to thank everyone who participated and wanted them to know, Each and every one of you showed classy behavior the entire weekend. You all are a credit to the game. He has set February 23rd & 24th as the dates for the next tournament. This Year, the Swanson Memorial Tournament had a full field of 128. About a dozen people tried to sign up after the field was closed. The first day the event was held at Gaslamp Billiard Palace (33 - 9' tables with Simonis 860). We got down to the final 32 (by around 8 pm) that would return the next day to play at College Billiards, (Jay Swanson s home room ). AIl the tables had new cloth (860 Simonis) and played great. Swannee was love by San Diego s pool fans. There was a standing room only crowd that all day until local player Victor Castro won the event in the single race to 13. The finals were played on the new 9' Diamond Smart Table. Jay Helfert, (as usual) did a great job of directing the event. The next, (7th year) Swanson Memorial event will be held Jan 18 & 19th, 2003. We will try and find additional sponsors and increase the added money. This is becoming one of the premier events in Southern California. Spokane, Washington On January 5 th & 6th McQ s Billiards held our first C class 9-ball tournament. The field was open to 64 players, and when I put this event together I felt I might get around 40 players. But when it came time to do the draw 57 players from around the northwest were here to play. The event would have attracted 64 players had I let a few more players in that are on the bubble between C and B . So if you are one of the players I did not let in take it as a sign of respect, and sign up for the next B tournament. To the 57 players that did play, the field was pretty even except for our eventual winner. Even though I know a lot of the northwest players I can t know them all. And there are players that slip through. I apologize to the players in the tournament that ran into this player. And those that played him in later rounds received a 1 game spot. I do plan to impose stiffer penalties in the future on players who try to sneak in to a tournament that is clearly under their class. So in the future when I put these events together please be honest about your ability and play in the event that is fair for you and your opponent. Without the excessive snow of December, the turnout for the January 12th 8-Ball Tournament at the Pastime Tavern in Oroville, WA, was significantly increased. A total of 19 players participated in this race to 3 event. Several guys from Monroe, WA, who were just in town to have a good time, managed to add some exciting competition to the fun we were all enjoying. In the end it came down to two hot players out of the local Oroville league, Ernie Wisdom and Jeff Rounds, and a serious competitor from British Columbia, Wally Gabriel. Jeff was sent to the loser s bracket halfway through the tournament by one of the Monroe players. He managed to shoot his way back with some incredible banks and excellent leaves to meet up with Ernie, who had just lost the match for the hot seat to Wally. Going hill-hill with Ernie, Jeff eventually came out on top and went on to face Wally, who won in the final match which again went hill-hill. I thought you d like to see this update that Stephen Ducoff received from Jimmy Caras daughter regarding his health. Ms. McCrossan said she was glad to have this information shared throughout the billiard industry. Dear Stephen, Just a short note to update you a little about my Dad. He has made tremendous progress with physical therapy. Although he is no longer able to walk unassisted, he doesn t seem to mind using a wheelchair. He transfers himself and is back to being his old self again, perhaps even stronger! It seems the only residual damage from the stroke itself is that his voice is softer. She s arguably the most recognizable pool player in the world. Her long black hair, snug black pants and tight black shirts have helped earn her one of the best nicknames in sports, The Black Widow. Currently ranked No. 3 on the WPBA Tour, Jeanette Lee is revered as much for her flamboyant, sexy style as her calculated strategy and marksmanlike precision at the table. It s that panache that has led to spots in SportsCenter commercials, in the HBO series Arliss, and in the major motion picture The Other Sister. She s also a contestant in ESPN s World s Sexiest Athletes contest (aired Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN). Questions and Answers: Your nickname, the Black Widow ... that wouldn t seem to fit in with where you want pool to go. Who gave it to you? Lee: It started at this pool room in New York, the Howard Beach Billiard Club. The owner of the room, this guy Gabe, said when I first walked into the room, I was so mysterious and pretty and quiet and nobody knew who I was. Then I just walked up to the table and started whamming balls all over the place. It seems like you re always playing Allison Fisher. Tell us about her. Do you guys truly dislike each other? Lee: I don t know how much we really like each other. But we re very respectful of each other. There s a lot of ribbing going on, but it s very light. We don t really know each other. We haven t had a whole lot of heart-to-hearts. At tournaments, it gets so heated and so competitive you can just feel it. That s why it s so exciting. And we re such different players. Allison s strength is her discipline and composure and shot routine. She s a lot more, I don t know how to say it, mechanical? Some people say she s like a surgeon. I call it methodical, but that s not very flattering. Let s just say, extremely consistent. But my top game is better than her top game because I have more natural talent and a bit more knowledge than her. Not much more, but a bit. It s like any sport, where the one competitor is very methodical, doesn t take any chances and is always right there at the end. Marsh Wins It All At Canadian Club Regionals continued from front page
The contestants were: Tom Akin, Fred Castellano, James Davee, John Doherty, Leonard Gascon, Vincent Gascon, Jen Gralish, Kris Iverson, Sean Kiani, Alex LaFountaine, Todd Marsh, Dan Miller, Randy Ohrstrom, Paul Olesky, Shawn Olson, Shad Pantle, Teaguen Parks, Jeff Ridgely, Pross Riem, Gerry Van Sharrel, and Mike Zimmerman. Jen was the only woman that qualified for this tournament. Being a single elimination tournament, a first round bye was huge, and 11 contestants were favored with one. However, the biggest upset of the tournament came in the first round when Sean Kiani defeated favorite Mike Zimmerman. The format was 8-Ball, races to 5, APA rules. Kristina Gargiulo from National Media Group in NYC was the tournament director, and I was on hand to referee. Each player had to contend with lighting, ball, and pocket issues, but for the most part, things ran very smoothly. Everyone got a nice gray Canadian Club embroidered polo shirt as they finished out of the tournament. Finally, the last 8 players matched up, with Kris Iverson defeating Gerry Van Sharrel, James Davee over Tom Akin, Fred Castellano winning over Shad Pantle, and Todd Marsh escaping a hill-hill battle with friend John Doherty. Fred then lost to Todd, and Kris and James battled each other, also going thrillthrill. James was last year s regional Canadian Club winner and seemed about to go into the finals once again, until a missed 8 ball down the rail wobbled, giving Kris the victory. That left only Kris and Todd to battle it out. One of them would go home at least $1,000 richer, and the other was assured the 2nd place prize of at least $500. They would both get a chance to enhance their winnings by playing Jeanette Lee a race to 3 for another $1,000 each. As a friend of Jeanette s, Kristina put me in charge of meeting and greeting and hustling Jeanette upstairs to a crowd that had been anticipating her arrival for hours. When she finally arrived, she was met by her appreciative fans, and they were then treated to a fantastic trick shot show and running commentary. This was followed by autographed glossy 8x10 s and free Billiard s Digest magazines featuring Jeanette on the cover. trying to win the tournament. It was a battle of nerves, as well as skill. Each player would make small mistakes and give the other air, but neither could capitalize on them. A mild skirmish between Todd and Kris at 2-2 resulted in me having to put them on the 60-second shot clock. It was close all the way, with Kris on the hill first. A costly scratch by Kris at 4-4 gave the deciding runout and game, set, match, and tournament win to Todd Marsh. Well played, gentlemen! The next test of skills came when the guys got to match up with Jeanette for a shot to win another $1,000 in addition to what they had already won. If Jeanette won, the money would go to her favorite charity, the Scoliosis Foundation. The previous night at the Portland regional tournament, she had won against both finishers there, so Kris and Todd were both forewarned! Kris went first. Jeanette showed why she is a top-ranked player by running out some very difficult racks of 8-ball. It went hill-hill as well. Jeanette ran down but left the 14 near the end rail, and Kris had most of his balls on the table with no good shot to start with when she missed. Instead of playing safe, Kris went for the out and missed and left Jeanette with a tough but makeable cut on the 14. She sliced it in clean and was in line on the 8. Jeanette won, 3-2. Next Todd was in the ring. Jeanette won the first game handily. He may have been shaking and sweating bullets, seeing how Kris fared (male pride and all that), but Todd has a way when he gets that determined look in his eye, he will NOT be denied! Todd won by a margin of 3-1 for another $1,000. He had quite a payday in all: $2,000, plus he and Kris won an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas where they will go head-tohead with other regional winners at the national championship. There, the 1st prize is $5,000 and the winner will have the chance to win an additional $1,000,000 by sinking the 8-ball on the break. Congratulations to both our regional winners and good luck at nationals! Saturday 22nd December Europe 1 - 12 USA In the most one-sided Mosconi Cup of its eight year history, the United States lifted the trophy after hammering the Europeans 12 -1 to leave the event finishing a day early. In the final match Johnny Archer and Nick Varner, who ironically were the only US losers of the tournament, dispensed with the World Champion and European No.1, Mika Immonen and Ralf Souquet 5 - 1 to leave the sizeable US contingent in the crowd chanting the familiar York Hall refrain of USA, USA! Commented winning captain Earl Strickland, who hoisted the coveted Mosconi Cup for the second time in his illustrious career, I m very aware of the fact that we had a lot of the breaks over the last three days and the Europeans didn t but that is the nature of the game and I make no excuses. I m honored to be captain again because this is really the only team event when you represent your country. My players were outstanding throughout and full praise to them. I m sure I ve got a few more good years left in me but I hope that when I m old and grey and watching the Mosconi Cup, I ll be thinking that I was part of that great event. Johnny Archer, who shot the winning 9-ball for the third time said, That was the best team ever; we really stuck together and Earl s captaincy spoke for itself. The final word went to the oft-defeated Euro skipper Ralf Souquet; Winning the Mosconi Cup is my target in life. That s my dream having been defeated seven times. Despite our poor performance I d like to thank my teammates and congratulate the Americans. One year we ve got to win the Mosconi Cup. around. Bob Kollasch, better know by all as Cowboy Bob , always does a fantastic job of squeezing every penny he can out of anyone who opens his or her mouth to bid. This time he raised $3630, our second biggest ever, with the big sellers being Edwin Montal, Tommy Baker, Dave Martin, Rick Johns, John Duclos, Nick Kruger, Jim Ward and ex-home town boy Randy Camantigue, just to mention a few. Gives you an idea of what kind of talent we had at this tournament. This was my first encounter with Edwin Montal. His playing is superb; no one could stop his climb to the drivers seat, after a bye in the first round he encountered along the way, Ken Haines, Wayne Boyd, Dave Martin, and Merv White all only averaging just over 2 games a match, his strongest contender was home town favorite Randy Camantigue. Randy worked his way through the top bracket taking out Mike Kurz, Dave Gould, Cowboy Bob , Kenny Trambitas, and Joe Gilliland. Edwin sent Randy to the losers bracket 9-7 guaranteeing Randy 3rd place money. Randy played his next match with much determination to meet up with Edwin again, by sending Dave Martin home with a 9-2 victory, which brought Randy back to Edwin s side of the board, and a shot at first place. Randy s excellent playing ability just wasn t quite enough to over come the rock solid playing of Edwin Montal. Final match score 9-5. I d like say my personal Thank You to Johnny Carr for allowing me to put on such a wonder event every year, and for all the tournaments he guarantees added money to. As usual The Falls Club staff went out of their way to make everyone feel welcome and provided excellent service to both players and fans alike. Great Falls, Montana The owners of the old Minneapolis bar opened their new bar, Classic 50 s, near Marketplace mall (the old bar closed). It s a great place for tournaments! They have 4 pool tables, a non-smoking section, and a Howards pizza. They also have a classic 50 s car in a display window! Their first pool tournament was December 15. About 60 people showed up, but the field was limited to 32. They learned that if they limit the field they will have to let people know in the future! The great turnout was not expected. They are planning to start having monthly tournaments. Nothing can cause your stroke to tighten up more than erratic breathing. Earlier, when discussing the Center of Mass, I referred to what is known as CENTERING. So what is it, and is it fatal? Centering is a breathing technique designed to produce physical balance and mental focus. Centered is a confident state that you can achieve immediately before and during competition that lets you know with certainty that you are mentally and physically ready to perform your task. So how does one become centered ? Achieving Dead Stroke means that you are literally playing out of your head . This means that you have shifted your focus to the external task of pocketing the balls on the table. The internal is in perfect harmony with the external. Shooting the balls into the pockets is an external task, and when you re in Dead Punch, it stays external. When we make a position error, or if we make a blunder such as a miscue, we have an internal reaction. This reaction is either anger, frustration, regret, or any combination of the three. When we internalize the task, we tend to cross the wires, creating and breeding negative pathways and thought processes inside the coconut. Once we have located our center of mass, we will notice a change in our breathing pattern as we become balanced . Shooting pool requires that we perform weight transfers periodically. No two shots are the same, but if we concentrate on our center of mass, or become conscious of our center of mass, we can FEEL THE SAME WAY for every shot. This can be achieved by becoming conscious of your breathing. Become conscious of how the air comes in and goes out of your body. Become conscious as to how far you direct the air into your body, and become conscious of the speed of the air. There are several breathing techniques out there, but I will concentrate on this technique that transfers beautifully to pool. Go back to the chair and once again guide yourself through the process of locating your center of mass. Once you have located it, become conscious of the air entering and exiting your body. Knowing that air is brought into the body by inhaling, we must also realize that once the air is brought into the lungs, oxygen is sent through the bloodstream. The oxygen is carried through the bloodstream and eventually the brain is supplied with that oxygen. Shallow tense breathing supplies limited oxygen to the bloodstream and a limited amount to the brain. Marathon runners experience what is called a runner s high , which is primarily caused by the oxygen that is being transferred through the bloodstream and eventually the brain (creating a euphoric state caused by the production of endorphins). Common sense would tell us that quite simply, more oxygen = less tension. More oxygen = better thinking. Less oxygen = more tension and horrible thinking. SO let s find a way to transfer this Runner s high to the pool table. As I said before, I could spend pages explaining different breathing techniques, which would be helpful and quite informative, but I m sure you d skip it and move on to something else. What I will do though is tell you how to link together three links in the chain. By that I mean linking together your Center of Mass and your Breathing to achieve Centering. Your Center of Mass should be the point that we direct our breathing. Scratching your head yet? It s a rather simple procedure. Get down in your stance and become aware of your center of mass. When that is accomplished, become aware of your breathing as well. Upon inhaling, inhale until you can feel the air in your center of mass. Exhale slowly and evenly (naturally) and feel the air leaving your center of mass. DO NOT FORCE THE AIR IN AND OUT OF YOUR BODY. Very slow, deep breaths will suffice. Allow the air to come in through your nose, and out through your nose. Practice this while you are at the table, and practice this while you are away from the table. This IS the key to playing in The Zone . This is what you can concentrate in while the other guy is shooting (and you re in the chair). Many of us just sit helplessly watching the other guy clear the table, as we cringe and slump further in our seat with the pocketing of every ball. We usually sit there and think bad thoughts. WE can eliminate that from your game starting today. We can now sit in the chair concentrating on our breathing, knowing that we will be ready when we get back behind the cue ball. (Many of us beat the hell out of ourselves while the other guy is shooting, then after serving up a self inflicted mental bashing, head back out to the table to continue our disaster). Utilizing this method serves a dual purpose: while sitting in the chair and being aware of our center of mass and our breathing, we tend to sit with good posture, therefore eliminating slouching. I strongly suggest that from this day forward, you become acutely aware of the position of your ears in relation to your shoulders. Body language is a funny thing. If I see a pool player with his head drooping and his shoulders sagging, I bet he s losing, or well on his way to getting there. When the ears are placed atop level shoulders, the body becomes erect and the neck straightens out, loosening the tension that the drooping head placed upon the muscles of the neck. The oxygen in the blood is flowing freely (not blocked off by tension) allowing more of it to be sent to the brain, which is where we need it most. Placing the ears above the shoulders does wonders. The main thing is that you do not look like a loser. If you stand like a winner, you ll feel like a winner, and I bet that you will end up a winner! OTB Next Issue: Getting Shape

Kerry Resch Memorial
CUSTOM POOL TABLES UNBELIEVABLE PRICES!

The 1st Annual Kerry Resch Memorial Scholarship 8-Ball Singles was held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12-13, 2002 in the Eagles Lodge #4040 newly purchased building at 14 W. Main, E. Helena, MT. The Eagles manager, Steve Farstead, worked closely with Bob & Becky Zapata to assure there would be beverages and seating available in the room, which is not actually in use yet. The Eagles Lodge also donated plenty of tacos and all the condiments to the tournament. Bob Zapata, in addition to setting up all the tables, donated a cue to be raffled, with all proceeds generated going to the Kerry Resch Scholarship Fund. By 10:30 am 36 men and 4 women had arrived, anxious to compete. The calcutta gathered $1103 to pay on the top 3 finishers. The race-to4 matches moved along well on the 6 tables being used, and we had arrived at the 6 players in the money by 11 pm, Saturday night. The women s entry fees were paid back to Paula Hiatt, who was top-placing woman, and to Becky Zapata, who came out on top of a 3-way playoff for the 2nd spot. Plaques were awarded to them, in addition to the prize money. Sunday morning at 11 am play commenced with races to 5. Marvin Yakos, Eureka, MT, and Heath Gradwohl, Helena, MT played the first match of the winner s side with Marvin taking the win. The next match on the winners side found Marvin matched against another great local player, Bob Bateen. Again Marvin triumphed. (l to r) Becky Zapata and Paula Hiatt The one-loss side had Lowell Luke, of Helena, taking the win over Jayson Nicholls, yet another good local who had a hard fight to his place in the money. Heath was then matched against great Northwest player Jeff Boucher, also from Helena. Jeff took this match. Heath Gradwohl & Jayson Nicholls finished at 5th & 6th, quite an accomplishment in a tough field. Jeff next handily won over Lowell Luke, out now in 4th, in his first large singles event. The next match pitted Jeff Boucher against Bob Bateen. These 2 close personal friends shoot together weekly and know each other s game well. Bob ultimately came to a 5-3 victory in a tense match, knocking Jeff into 3rd place and out of the battle. The finals match found Marvin Yakos (l to r) Bob Bateen and Marvin Yakos facing Bob Bateen. These players have met before in finals competition, and were wary of one another. Marvin jumped into a 1-0 lead. Game 2 found Marvin with a tough out. His 10-ball was left near a clump of Bob s balls close to the side rail and the placement of the cue ball left only a very touchy crossface, cross-side bank. Marvin nailed this bank shot and managed to come out of the mess and pull shape for another cross-side bank, this time on the 8-ball, nailing it and the win on game 2. Bob broke and made the 8 in game 3, choosing to rebreak. Unfortunately for him, nothing fell, and the only other time he saw the table this rack was for a kick shot. Score was now 3-0, Marvin. Rack number 4 was a terrific, tense chess match, which Bob won. 3-1, now. Next rack, Marvin pocketed a couple of balls, then played a good safe. This safe enabled him to make the kill on game 5. Score now at 4-1. The final table was broken by a very intense, determined Bob Bateen, but his break failed him. Marvin at last grasped the victory. Bob Bateen took 2nd in the tournament, but played with the class, finesse and heart of a champion. He received a plaque in addition to the 2nd place prize money. Marvin Yakos won the tournament with skill, focus and determination, receiving a plaque, a jacket and 1st place money. Marvin s name will be the first engraved onto the memorial trophy of his close friend, Kerry Resch. This was a very moving finals and the caliber of play of all the players in this tournament would have made Kerry proud. Thanks to all the participants! The Scholarship Fund grew by over $400 and we will be ready to make the first award in 2003. Chip Pool Packs House Final standings for the Chip Pool Classic held at Eagles Club #326, Bozeman, Montana. This tournament was held Saturday January 5, 2002 with a field of 52 players. Wow 52 pool players, what a great turn out. We had players come from as far as Boulder, Gardiner and Helena. A special Thank You goes out to all the players that showed up, Scott Lee for the helping hand, and our added money sponsors. For those of you who might have missed the explanations of what a Chip Pool Tournament is in the August issue of On The Break, I will quickly explain it to you. The game is 8-Ball, Singles. When you pay your $10 entry fee, you receive 5 poker style chips. The format is a race to ONE (1) (an absolutely brutal game). Anyone can win. If you win, you stay on the same table and wait for your next opponent. If you lose, you must turn in one of your chips to the tournament director and then wait to be assigned to another table. The winner of course is the player with any chip/s left. We pay down half the field. REFEREE COMMITTEE POOLS IDEAS from: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development
The 2001 Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Referee Committee met in Colorado Springs, CO fourth quarter 2001 to discuss this past year s progress, as well as tournament plans for 2002. New ideas discussed and approved were details for the design and use of a referee handbook. The handbook will include procedures to follow while refereeing tournaments as well as a code of conduct. The handbook is still in its conception phase and will be released in the months to come. Also discussed at the committee meeting were procedures for the 2002 BCA National 8-Ball Championships. The committee decided on the number of referees that will be on staff for next year s tournament, a total of 46 referees. At the 2002 tournament, the BCA will be able to rotate referees throughout the tournament, due to an increased interest in the referee program. Stephen Ducoff, executive director of the BCA states that, The BCA referee system is strong and getting even stronger under the leadership
of Mr. Messer and the guidance of the Referee Committee. A credible referee program is vital to the continued health of our tournament system and these folks know the rules and how to interpret them. Current members of the BCA Referee Committee consist of: Director of Referees and Committee Chairman Cecil Messer of Portage, IN; BCA National Head Referees Bill Butler of Sun Valley, ID and Alan Barnes of Mesquite, TX; BCA National Senior Referee Kelly Reynolds of Bend, OR; BCA National Referees Shannon Lynde of Las Cruces, NM, Mark Avlon of Lynnwood, WA, and Dave Merrill of Pueblo, CO. BCA Board of Directors member Randy Goettlicher of Dallas, TX is the Board liaison to the Referee Committee. Betty Harris of Colorado Springs, CO is the BCA League and Program Coordinator, Referee Program Administrator and staff liaison to the Referee Committee. The BCA referee program is a four-tier system. Referee is the first tier, which offers progression to the second of National Referee .
The third tier is National Senior Referee , with National Head Referee as the fourth tier. The Director of Referees is nominated from the existing pool of National Head Referees by the National Head Referees. The BCA Board of Directors must approve this nomination. This tiered system allows each participant to progress in experience through re-certification every two to three years, depending on level of service. A formal certificate of recognition, official BCA Referee patch and identification card are issued to each person passing the exam. Each referee-in-training must go through a national training course and once the course is completed, an open-book written examination must be taken. To become a billiards referee, candidates must achieve a passing grade of 90% or higher on the final exam. Test information comes from the current edition of Billiards: The Official Rules and Records Book, published annually by the BCA. The 8 rolled softly and steady toward the pocket, but fate would not give Ron a break this day, and it kicked the corner of the pocket and came to a stop. Game Over, Marc just tapped it in. 2020, A Pool Odyssey plank stair that wound its way around the circular area and down to the deck. Along the stairs softly lit walls were framed photographs of past local pool Legends like Flyboy, New York Blacky, Mexican Joe, Buttons, Lucky, Everett, King David, Skinman, Buzzsaw, The Shoe, Detroit John, Zack Attack, Q and many others. The legendary pool teams of the 80 s & 90 s like The Blasters, The Pirates, and J s Gang were all there. Group Therapy, who began the new decade with a World Championship in 2000 and also the National Senior Team Championship in 2012, were there. There were framed copies of pages from old pool newspapers and magazines, articles from The Bridge, Cue and Quill, National Billiard News, The Cue Ball Gazette, On The Break, On The Wire, and Cue Today. Reaching the bottom, a young man who looked like he could handle any event that might arise greeted them pleasantly. Pat looked around the room, what he could see of it, anyway. There was an eerie mist everywhere that made it difficult to make anything out, and it felt like they d entered a timeless space, a dream zone. The air almost crackled, and everything had a blue sheen. Gone were the noise and lights and hordes of people, replaced by a flat yet charged quietness. They were guided to hoverbubbles and seated by a Hoverserver who brought drinks and snacks without even asking. On a fountain-table bubbling without sound nearby was a large, leather-bound book. Pat floated over to it and found it full of fascinating memories. The history of the sport of billiards and pool was there, followed by a comprehensive section on local pool history. There were more excerpts from pool papers, and other published works regarding the sport, including, Whatever Happened To King David? Pat remembered the one about the big scores of 2002, and another telling of the $25,000 added to Northwest Regional BCA Championships of 2005. While they waited for Captain Hook, Pat read an article critiquing the book, The Perfect Form, by Brad Gowin. The critics had a lot to say. There was an article about Liz Schwartzreich winning the WPA championship in 2003. Pat started reading another article about a famous player named Lucky, still playing pool at the age of ninety-something and sharing his secrets, when he found himself dozing off Ok, time to wake up! said Steve, Captain Hook is about to start a game. We can watch. Captain Hook appeared through the mist and took a hoverchair in the middle of the room. He sat down and spoke aloud. Connect to Mindbender, he said. Connected, a soft voice spoke back. You are in Portal 16. You may begin at any time. Pat leaned over to Steve. What s this? he asked. Steve whispered back, This is Mindbender, the Big Daddy gambling game of them all. There s three hundred portals worldwide. It s a fourdimensional holographic virtual reality billiard game. A player can instantly to all the rooms at once if he wants. This sounded like the old Internet that drove Pat nuts, and he said, Oh, I ve seen this before. No, Steve said, I doubt it. You re thinking of that old game where you used the mouse to shoot the pool balls you saw on a computer monitor. This is different. Look over there. Steve pointed. Pat and Art looked through the mist and could see holographic pool balls projected all around. You see him using anything? He is using his mind to execute his shots. Art and Pat exclaimed in unison, What? It s true. It s hard to do, but if you have psychic

propensity or have control of your alpha beta waves, you have a big advantage. You have to be mentally fit. Captain Hook is one of the best in the world he is really good at it. Art could see holographic balls moving through what looked like shot patterns. You mean this is a pool game and he s playing? Yep. You really have to think carefully. I guess you use your left brain to analyze and your right brain to transmit, or the results get really messed up. You play against people in the other rooms. You can even play other groups. It s even possible to play all three hundred spheres at one time. Looks like right now he s only playing someone in Portal-236 over there and someone else in P-129 over there, said Q, pointing through the mist to another area. It s rumored he s played up to 170 games at one time. There s another guy named Tor who holds the record, though. Wow! Pat exhaled, as his mind tried to open to the games going on before him. So, explain the details to me. Steve said, Well, beyond learning to control the thought orders, there are concepts or rules for this game, like: Dogging the Balls, Calling the Professor, High Ball Run Ante, Final Answer, Guru, Sneaking Sally Through the Alley, and Purple Haze. Purple Haze is a term you would say aloud to protect yourself from elimination if you see all the balls coming at you at once. Calling the Professor is an onboard help scenario when you get stuck on a move or a shot but you can only use it once a week. Final Answer is a move to counter the white ball attack or the kobi-osha-maru . Pat and Art watched in amazement and almost disbelief as Captain Hook sat, swiveling from game to game, silently concentrating on the games at hand. Finally, he emerged victorious from both, and through the mist the voice said, Portal 16 wins game number 43-786 and game number 57-521. The money has been deposited in your account. Do you wish to play another? No, said Captain Hook, and he gave his bubble a push and floated over to join the group. Arrrrr mateys, have you found a game to your liking? he asked. I know things are so different now from when pool was a real sport I ve been thinking about bringing in an antique 4 1/ 2 by 9 Gold Crown V. It might encourage classic 8 & 9-ball again. But I m having a hard time finding one. Most of them were demolished or rebuilt into other type table games. Brunswick hasn t made them for 20 some years. But, it s mostly talk by the time real pool shows back up all us old-timers will be gone, long gone. Times change, Pat thought, and like the old adage, all things must pass. He wondered what they d be playing ten and twenty years down the road, in the 30 s and 40 s. Well, maybe something good would happen. Pondering that, he yawned. Well, Art, we haven t played any pool, but I m beat. How about you? Yeah, agreed Art. I m ready to head out, too. This has been quite an eye-opener. I guess we re just plain out of luck. They said their goodbyes and made their way back upstairs. As soon as they had paid their tab they saw Pat s Polutnaut pulling up to the front door. They left the world of Captain Hook s Pool Emporium, their minds full of glitter, glitz, gadgets and gizmos, but no real pool to be found. Arthur, my friend, said Pat, keep that Schrader handy, ok? You just never know when we might run across a game of 9-ball. Art gave Pat a skeptical look, but nodded slowly, thinking, yeah, you just never know. th th th th That s all folks!
