Letterto the Editor:

Editor’s Note: This email was sent in response to last month’s question about carrying a cue on an airplane. We appreciate our readers input. Mr. Cheese, A January letter wondered how to get his cue aboard the airlines. Your suggestion to FedEx it is, in a word, a bad idea (sorry). I travel a lot as well and always try to carry my cue to my destinations. Here’s several methods on how to do this. 1. Get a strong hard cardboard mailing tube. Wrap your cue(s) with shipping wrap and check it through with your luggage or by itself. 2. Buy a duffle type gym-bag that will fit your cue case. Use some of your clothes for some extra packing and check it through. 3. Go to to a gun dealer and buy a hard-case shotgun case. The one I have fits both my hard cue case and my two cue Joss case. This will cost between $60 and $100 dollars. You may have to recut the foam packing to fit your cue cases, but it works wonderfully. 4. Contact the BCA and tell them to go to cue (bat) for us and get this stupid rule changed. Hope that this helps, “Trapper” John Hill Washington State Anyone interested in commenting or raising another question can contact us by email at: otbnews@aol.com ABOUT THE COVER Bev and Jack Madden taken in their shop just outside of St Ignatius, Montana
4 By: Don “Cheese” Akerlow
In the Mission Valley at the foot of the Mission Mountains, usually people retire to Arizona. Jack and his lovely wife Bev retired from Arizona for the brisk pristine air of Big Sky Country. I asked Jack, “When did you start making cues? He responded, “I made my first cue in the Boys Club when I was about 12 years old. That’s where I really got inspired. There was a pool table in the Boys Club, a real old one from the Brunswick Balke Collander Company around the 1900’s. I went in there and asked the guy if I could play on the big table and he said, ‘No, that’s for the big kids and you’re too small.’ When everybody left I went over and asked again and he let me play on it, but he said I had to be careful. Then I decided to make a cue in the wood shop, which every Boys Club had a wood shop. It didn’t have a joint in it of course, but I made a pool cue. I was later inspired by Cue Maker Gus Szamboti a great deal. He enjoyed my company on the phone and I asked him a lot of questions. I’ve played with Gus Szamboti Cues for many years. Gus liked me. I was one of the better players. We struck up a very good relationship. He was very private about cue making details and what he told people, but he told me stuff about the wood, that inspired me quite a bit. Gus built two cues with ivory hearts in them - one went to Ray Martin the other to me. I met Ray Martin at the U.S. Open when it was invitation only and you had to be in the top three of a major tournament. I came in third in Sacramento at Terry Stoner’s place. Ray was sitting with Luther Lassiter and asked, ‘What kind of cue are you playing with Jack?’ I said, ‘A Gus Szamboti.’ And he said, ‘I have one too,’ and he pulled it out and both our cues had four ivory hearts.” “How do you turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse? In essence, how do you turn a square piece of wood into a beautiful Madden cue?” I asked. Jack responded, “Very carefully and slowly! It takes time to cure the wood. You learn where to purchase the best woods and who’s got them. There are people who sell woods just to cue makers and you have a process of elimination to find
February 2007
the best quality of wood. If you’re a good cue maker you buy the very best because it is so much trouble otherwise - then you can turn it into a Cadillac. You remember the butterflies in the butts. Well I did those through an operation on the butterflies where they had to be pieced together and if it wasn’t done right it would destroy months of work. I looked at them for three months and I was scared to touch them. I wanted it to be just right. I started on them after you left. The three butterfly cues took me 10-12 hours just to prep them and bore them out without blowing them apart. It was a process of keeping them cool and good tooling, good machinery. It took 12 hours to do three butts and they are only 4" long. But if you don’t put them together right and let them cure for a long time, then they’ll blow apart on you. I nailed it! I didn’t have any problems, so I was tickled pink.” Jack continues his cue making with his style. He said he just sets stuff down lots of times when he’s building something unusual. He’ll just sit it there and look at it for an hour or so and then he’ll have enough and walk away. Maybe a week or two weeks or a couple of hours later, it will don on him the process that he needs to do to make sure its proper. That’s how he’s evolved. “As far as building a cue,” Jack said, “you get your wood in from your supplier and go through it right away. As soon as you get the wood, you need to start on it. You want to acclimatize it because you don’t know what type of climate it has come from, so it’s happy here in this particular environment. You have to keep your wood at a certain amount of humidity and then you dry it, and cut it and round it and dip it. You have to dip it in a stabilization material, then hang it and monitor it. Every month or so you have to cut off a couple thousandths or so (a dollar bill is 4/1000 thick), then you have to reseal it. The wood will stabilize if you use the proper procedures. Over a period of a year or so you’ve got a lot of good wood that is ready to build cues out of. Before you build a cue you have to go through this process. You also have to remember that you bore the wood not drill it. There are suppliers that buy wood. If you get a quality piece of wood you can build a cue in just a few days but it’s not necessarily good. There are hundreds of operations that go into building a cue and so to pay attention to all of them and to produce a really high quality cue you have to have all your ducks in a row. You have to be focused every time you go out there. You can’t be thinking about something else. All it takes is one error and all of that work is gone. It’s precision all the way through. There are a lot of mental, physical and environmental aspects to building a cue. I’ve gotten into it really heavy.” I then asked Jack about his shop, “You don’t actually have a one-man shop. It’s more extensive than that. Explain what you have in your shop. The process the wood goes through in making a Madden Cue.” He responded, “I built and designed a shop like they were done years ago. Gus’ shop and Ginacue. There were pictures of Ernie Gutierrez’s shop. I took those pictures and blew them up and fashioned our shop after
February 2007
Ernie’s. Not knowing a thing about machinery, I could see little tidbits in the enlarged photo. So that’s how I designed it. Bev mentioned, “The building was built around the machinery. Jack actually designed where each piece of machinery was going to go and then we figured out how big the shop had to be.” To which Jack said, “We took a piece of drafting paper and measured each machine and scaled it out - each little square. We cut little pieces of paper to glue on there and designed the shop. It was truly Bev’s idea on how to design it that way.” “But
Jack knew what machine we wanted for what operation and where to place those machines to cut down on the amount of walking. Sort of like an assembly line. Jack used to work for Sperry Rand and they did a lot of aircraft production parts,” Bev added. You said your shop is about a ten-man shop if you wanted to expand. “If I wanted to, I could work about ten people out of here,” Jack said. “One thing that puzzles me is that most people retire to Arizona. You reversed that and retired to Montana from Arizona,” I asked. “I did,” Jack said. “In 1955, when I was a kid in Phoenix, we lived where downtown Phoenix is now. It was all country. There were 30,000 people there and I was a country kid in Phoenix. Where I lived we had horses, cows, chickens, and ducks. We had a small 2 acre place but Dad owned half the neighborhood and had about 5 or 6 houses that he was renting out. It was all country, but now that’s all inner city. So I enjoy the country and met Bev while we were working at Bob’s Big Boy back in ’65. She was the waitress and I was the cook. And she looked pretty good to me.” “I was born just down the road from here,” Bev interjected. Now I knew the connection and said, “Oh so Bev, you were born in Montana that’s the key to why you came up here.” Jack continued, “We came up here on our honeymoon to meet the family in ’68 and said, ‘I can’t believe this. This is where I want to live. I’m going to build a house here someday and I did back in ’80. Then the recession hit.” I then asked Bev, to tell me the magic she does with the inlays to the cues. And she responded by saying, “The CNC machines do all the inlay work. Basically the machines we’ve got right now, weren’t designed for cue making. When we bought those machines, there was no such animal. We had to buy machines that do engraving and Jack had a lot of tooling done to them and figured out how to make them work. We spent another $10,000 on them to get them so they’d do cues. Originally we just had one and we got lucky and found the second one. One is set up so that it will cut the pockets in the butt. If we do a floating point, which we are trying to get away from because that is not where the value is for this type of cue now. The value is for those nice white points and pre-cut points that Jack does - where they are hand
5
done. The pocket is where the inlay goes into. The other machine has a flat plate. I usually use that one to cut the piece that goes into the pocket. We had to start from scratch. First off, I had to learn how to run this machine. The instructions didn’t say “this is what you do” - it generalized it all. There was a lot of blood, sweat and tears, screaming, ranting and raving trying to get it to work - a lot of frustration. I have a brother who’s a machinist. He wasn’t into the CNC machining too much and he’d come over and shake his head. Then one day he told me, after we got it up and running half way decent, ‘Do you realize that a lot of machinists can’t even run this machine because it goes north, south, east, west; then it goes up and down and then in a circular pattern.’ You can actually put a part in there and it can rotate it at 360 degrees and put an inlay in there as it is rotating. I can rotate the machine more than 360 degrees - I’ve got an inlay that’s for 420 degrees. A lot of machines can’t do that either and my machine according to the instructions can’t do it, but I’ve figured out how to fool the machine. My brother told me, ‘There’s a lot of machinists that don’t have the knowledge you do on this machine.’ Jack would say, ‘Just make it work. I have all the confidence in the world in you. Just get it done.’ And I’m bawling my eyes out because I have no idea how to get it done.” To that Jack added, “Without Bev I’d be sunk as far as inlays go. Most people think to make a good cue you’ve got to be a woodworker. That’s not the case at all. Not only do you have to know woods and how they move and what to do to stop them from moving, and to know the different densities. You have to weigh every piece and every part to balance the cue and the shafts also. Every shaft is a different weight and all those things together - you have to also be a machinist. I don’t mean just a half-assed machinist. You have to know precision and be a good quality machinist. Any machine that breaks down - we fix it and we have all old machines and sometimes they break - things happen. We build our own parts. You can’t buy parts for these machines anymore so we build all our own stuff.” “You know there are a lot of guys who call themselves cue makers and they’re not taking a piece of wood and making it into a cue. There are companies that you can go to that you can buy all the parts and you put a big screw in one end, a big screw in the other, put it all together and spray it and you’re a cue maker. They don’t do what Jack does to create a custom made cue,” Bev added with pride. “Jack, tell me the story again that you told me about U. J. Puckett,” I asked. So Jack began this story, “It was 1965, I was at the pool room in Phoenix, the Golden Cue, and I had been playing. I had about $400 in my pocket and this painter walked in. He had all of the garb on. He had paint on everything bib overalls. He had a hat with paint on it, and had it on kind of sideways. U. J. used to carry a little bottle around - like an eyedropper bottle and he’d put whiskey in it. He didn’t drink but before he came in the

pool room, he’d take that whiskey and rinse his mouth out so that when he started talking to you, you’d think he was full of it. He had a hundred dollar bill stapled to the corner of his bib overalls. It looked like it was going to fall out and in the other pocket he had about $10,000. He asked me, ‘Son, do you want to play some?’ I said, ‘Sure.’ We started off at $20 a game and the next thing you know it evolved into a little more than that. I had about $400 of his American money and I was about 125 pounds and about 5’8". That 6’5" big man came over to me and he stood as close as he possibly could to me. There wasn’t an inch between us. His belly was rubbing my belly. He said, ‘Son you’re going to have to bet some. I can beat you.’ He put the intimidation factor on me and I was looking up at him and he said, ‘How much you got?’ And I said, ‘I got around $800 now.’ He said, ‘Bet the $800 - we’ll play a session for that.’ And I thought, $800! I’d never bet $800 in my life and I started turning a little red in my face and I said, ‘Hmmm’ and I looked down. I said ‘Well, mister, I don’t know.’ I looked down and I saw his shoes through our bellies and I went - wait a minute - I thought what’s a guy doing in painters garb with $400 shoes on? And I looked back up and it donned on me that this was U. J. Puckett. I said, ‘You’re U.J. Puckett?’ He looked at me and said, ‘Shhh - be quiet. How’d you know son?’ I said, ‘Those shoes. You got $400 shoes on.’ He said, ‘Oh Jesus, don’t tell nobody.’ I said ‘No, I won’t.’ Anyway he asked me who to play in there to win a little money and he did. I hadn’t seen him for about 20-25 years, I guess it was. I went to Vegas and Billy Incardone was playing somebody for $25,000 in the back and I’ll bet there were 500 people standing around the table. You couldn’t get in close to the table so I was in the back of the crowd. I grabbed a little chair to stand up on so I could see over the crowd and I looked around and there’s U. J. sitting in a chair and he had that great big cowboy hat on like Hoss wore on Bonanza. He looked over at me and nodded and I nodded back but I thought ‘Oh hell, he wouldn’t remember me after 25 years.’ I guess that match ended up an hour or so later. He came wondering over talking and said to me, ‘Phoenix, Arizona, 1965. ’‘There’s no way you could remember me,’ I said. He responded, ‘Oh, yes I do! I’ll never forget you young fella. I never forget a guy that beats me out of a little money. How you been?’ We sat and talked for a while.” Jack went on to say that stories like these always meant a lot to him as a pool player growing up, as a source of inspiration. When I asked Jack if he had anything to add, he answered with, “This is a story about cues and a guy and his wife that wanted to live up in God’s country and couldn’t get there. So they had to start making cues before they could do something on their own. So they could live up here in the prettiest part of the world - so that’s all I can say. I get offered to go to tournaments and get my room and everything paid for, but I tell them, ‘I love you for it, but I’m happy what I’m doing.’ I teach a few people to play and try to show them things. I have fun doing that. This little town, Ronan, will have some great players coming out of here someday. Visit Jack at: www.JohnMaddenCues.com

and 2nd diamonds from pocket C.The cue ball is in hand anywhere behind the X line. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball to C ball, then carom to the foot cushion, rebound and go around the blocking ball with curve back to F ball, pocket C ball and F ball as designated. Special Note: Blocking ball may not be hit by the cue ball. Also, extra cue ball contacts on the foot cushion are allowed, and a scratch is allowed. Here are some helpful hints on executing this shot. Keep your cue as level to the plane of the table as possible. Aim the cue ball at the ball C for a 3/4 ball aim. The cloth and rail height of each table are not the same so adjustments on cueing and speed of stroke differ greatly. You shouldn’t use a lot of power on this shot, and you don’t need to cue the cue ball with maximum follow. Start out cueing the cue ball with follow between the horizontal axis of the cue ball and maximum follow using a crisp moderate stroke. Adjust the amount of follow and speed until you get the cue ball to rebound and curve around the blocking ball to pocket F. Make sure your warm-up strokes are smooth and don’t forget to follow through.

Derby City Shootout By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA
San Francisco Billiard Academy For those of us on the left side of the country, the Derby City Classic in Louisville, Kentucky in January may seem like a long, cold road trip. I remember back in the ’60s when I was just learning to play and I heard of the Johnston City “hustlers” tournaments. I wish now I had gone to those before they stopped. The modern replacement is the DCC, Bob Jewett with 40 big tables, a bunch of bar tables, and even 3-cushion tables with nine or ten events spread out over nine days. At any one time in “the pit” - a group of tables in the main tournament room — you might see six current and former world champions in matches simultaneously. And if you stick around after hours, you will see another set of amazing
match-ups. Go now or regret it later. You have plenty of time to prepare for next January. This year I ran the straight pool (AKA 14.1) event. It was not a tournament as such but rather a high-run shootout. In the prelims, each player got up to 12 tries to run as many balls as possible from a break shot of his choosing. After a miss, start over. The top eight players advanced to the finals where they each got only 5 tries to get a good run. Champions like Corey Deuel, Ralf Souquet, Thorsten Hohmann, Dennis Orcollo, Niels Feijen, and Larry Nevel entered. On the first day of the prelims, John Schmidt took the daily prize with an 89, but after that at least 100 was required to be best for the day. Johnny Archer ran over 100 on each of his three sets of four tries in the prelims. Mike Davis popped in a 151 on his final try on the second day edging out Souquet who had a 137. These runs are all the more amazing because of the very tight Diamond 9-foot tables. Johnny Archer

A Positive Resolution
by: Samm Diep (c) December 2006
As I sit at the gate at the Denver International Airport, awaiting my flight to Texas for the first Hunter qualifier of 2007, I reflect on my recent preparation for this tournament. I just began working with an amazing new coach who, in the very short time that we’ve been working together, has instilled in me one important statement: I’m setting a higher standard for myself. Okay. So, I’m still a work in progress, but the more I can repeat it, the more I will believe it. Along with that mindset, he also states, “success and failure are determined by your performance at each Samm Diep individual shot - victory is not always an indication of success and losing is not always an indication of failure.” Therefore, reinforcing how I’ve always wanted to feel, it’s okay to be proud of my performance even though I may not win. It’s also okay to feel a bit disappointed when I know I just played barely well enough to win a match. I am setting a higher standard for myself. It’s a new way of thinking. It’s not necessarily a huge change from the current discipline principles of my training, but in respect to exactly what it is he’s demanding from me and what I am now demanding from myself, this is very different. Quite simply put, merely pocketing the ball is just not enough. Furthermore, just being on the correct side of the ball is not enough either. I am setting a higher standard for myself. The player that comes out ahead is the one who “fights for the angle.” This is another way of thinking that he’s enforcing. Fighting for the angle, as I’ve discovered, is a very sophisticated way of looking at this game. The player that just plays to a general area or to get near their next ball so they can see it will eventually get into trouble. The one who has the plan and doesn’t just save their problems until it’s too late is the one who will prevail. “No Lazy Shots - EVER!” he also tells me. Not setting higher standards for yourself and for where you want that cue ball to be is often due to laziness and carelessness. I am often guilty of this. I think we can all agree we have been at one point or another. From now on, good enough is just not good enough for me. From this day forward, I’m setting a higher standard for myself. Let’s start a movement! Declare it with me: “I am setting a higher standard for myself.” Repeat it... Believe it... Live it... APA POOL LEAGUES EXPAND TO JAPAN Japanese Poolplayers Association Forming Teams in Tokyo LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (January 23, 2007) -The world’s largest amateur pool league is expanding oversees to Japan. In late-December, the American Poolplayers Association (APA) granted Noriyuki Nanjo approval to begin promoting and administering APA Leagues in Tokyo as the Japanese Poolplayers Association (JPA). Nanjo, a former APA member, began playing pool in the APA Leagues in Washington State while attending college. “The APA League was a great place for me to learn about the game of pool and meet many new and interesting people,” said Nanjo. The JPA will operate under the same guidelines as APA Pool Leagues and will utilize The Equalizer® handicap and scoring system. JPA teams will be eligible to qualify for the APA National Team Championships held annually in August at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The first JPA League is scheduled to begin in February. For more information about the APA, visit www.poolplayers.com. For more information on the JPA, visit www.poolplayers.jp.

The January 19-21 weekend featured four 2006/2007 McDermott All American Tour stops around the country, one of them being a $500 added 8-ball event with thirty players, hosted by owner Henry Nogiec and director Greg Kuhl at the Las Vegas Cue Club in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday. The American CueSports Alliance-produced event featured a doubleelimination format on Global 7-footers, and Henry Nogiec (Las Vegas, NV) ran undefeated to the finals. In the hot-seat match, Nogiec – rated a “6” on a local handicap system used - outpointed Edgar Jackson (Las Vegas, NV), rated a “5”, 6-2. Earlier in the A-bracket semi-finals, Henry had clipped Jim Murphy [5] (Las Vegas, NV), 6-1, and Edgar sprinted past Bruce Barrett [4] (Las Vegas, NV) 5-2. Early-round loser Gary Onomura [6] (Las Vegas, NV) continued on a tear in the B-bracket by eliminating Barrett [4] 6-2 in the quarterfinals, Rick White [6] (Las Vegas, NV) 6-1 in the semifinals; and Edgar Jackson [5] 6-4 in the finals. The tourney finals showcased Onomura and Nogiec, with Gary Onomura taking two tight sets for the title, 6-4 and hill-hill 6-5! By virtue of Gary Onomura being the highest-finishing ACS member, he qualified for a free singles entry into the 2007 ACS Nationals in Las Vegas – courtesy of the ACS. The ACS wishes to thank sponsors McDermott Handcrafted Cues, Silver Cup Chalk, Billiard Wholesalers and Pro Series Cases for their support in donating “Value-In-Kind” product for this and all stops on the McDermott All American Tour. Sponsorship opportunities are still available by contacting the ACS. January 26-28 will feature McDermott All American Tour stop #18 - the $5,000 added 3rd Annual Bud Light Amateur Winter Shootout (for onsite entry details – men’s and women’s divisions - contact Jon Van Roekel / 563-243-4361 or 563-243-6179). Information, entry details and schedules for the 2006/2007 McDermott All American Tour are available at www.americancuesports.org. Uncle Jack’s Billiards & Lounge started our first monthly 9-ball and 8-ball tournaments on January 1, 2007. A one day event that is played on the first Saturday of each month 9-ball is played on the 9 footers races to 5 and 8-ball races to 3 on the bar table. Players that played both tournaments did not have much time to sit which was fine for most of them “We wanted to have a fun tournament for our players” said House pro and Room owner Randy Camantigue and with a
reasonable $25- entry fee for each tournament it was definitely a fun way to spend the day shooting pool against the best players North side has to offer. The full field in the 9-ball division saw James “Big Daddy” Davee take the hot seat with wins over Lance B, John K, Mike Z, Randy C, and Ben H. Mike Z took care of the B side to earn a rematch with James in the finals but both decided to split the pot. Mike Z was busy on the 8ball division as well he had an undefeated run with wins over John T, Greg O, James D, Manny F, and Scott C for the point. Scott C got in the finals by beating Gary G in the B side earning a rematch with Mike 9-Ball division: Entry fee $20 Green fee $5 Total purse $890 1st $250 James 2nd $250 Mike Z 3rd $130 Ben H 4th $100 Randy C 5-6 $50 Marvin, Bob S 7-8 $30 Alex, John K

On December 20, 2006 I went in for my routine ultrasound at 38 weeks pregnant. I knew something was wrong when the ultrasound doctor told me not to leave, and that my OB/GYN, Dr. Cavalli, was coming over to the hospital to talk to me. I asked him what was wrong and he said to just wait until my doctor got there. That was the longest 20 minutes of my life. I called my husband in a panic and he got there in about 15 minutes. When my doctor arrived, the ultrasound doctor sat us all down and showed us that the blood flow to the baby was compromised because he was all twisted up in his cord. If I went into labor the contractions could kill him. 10 minutes later I was being prepped for surgery. I went in to the OR at 4:30pm, Max was born at 5:03pm, and I had him in my arms by 5:45pm. Luckily I had great doctors, and we both came out healthy! The second annual Helena Bar Box Open 8-ball singles pool tournament was held over the weekend at the Edge Casino and Lounge, with defending champion Jeff Boucher successfully retaining his men’s title. The final was a rematch of last year, as Boucher of Bozeman met Salt Lake City’s Damian Jeff Pongpanik for the championship. Boucher, Boucher formerly of Helena, reached the cat-bird seat undefeated, so Pongpanik would need to win two race-to-five matches to claim the title. The Utah player captured the first set, 5-3, but then dropped the final race, 5-1. The championship was a sparkling exhibition of 8-ball, with only one game containing more than one miss by either player. The contest featured 12 table runs Damian seven by the champ and five by the runnerPongpanik up. Boucher collected $1,000 for the victory, while Pongpanik took home $875. There were 49 competitors in the two-day, double elimination tournament. Four local area shooters placed in the top-eight, led by Rusty Taylor, who finished third. Jerry Young of Edmonton, Alb., took fourth; Chuck Hoagland and Dan Hamper (both of Helena) tied for fifth; with Phil Sauer (Helena) and Tyson Sustaire (Salmon, Idaho) tying for seventh. Rusty In the women’s division, comprised of 11 players, Taylor Jana Montour of Edmonton garnered the crown, defeating Helena’s Brandi Mackey in the finals. Mary Garcia placed third. Montour’s winning share was $500, and Mackey pocketed $400. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5-6 7-8

Meet “Jake” the Bar’s Namesake By: Don “Cheese” Akerlow
Looking for a place to play pool? Why not go to the hottest new pool bar - Jake’s - in Salem, Oregon that just opened its door January 14th. I spoke to the owner, Scott McComas about his newest enterprise. Since it is only a couple of blocks from Jammer ’s, which was THE hottest pool bar, I asked Scott why he opened Jake’s. He said, “For the last three years Jammer’s has been at maximum capacity and there was not enough room. We have triple the square footage with Jake’s. We have a state of the art facility designed for the comfort and the serviceability of the pool community. The bar itself is roughly 1/3 bigger than the one at Jammer ’s. There are two completely separate bar stations and three separate cash registers. The entrance and egress behind the bar is not built like what we had at Jammer’s, so the bartenders aren’t dodging one another. We
designed it to be pool friendly and user friendly to the staff. There is no table that is closer than 5 feet to
another table, the same clearance between the pool tables and the seating. We have seating for 168 people spread out, not crowded. The original concept was to put 12 pool tables in, but that was too
happy with our facility and we can’t be more pleased that the players have accepted it 100%.” Our conversation then turned to the pool players themselves, leagues and tournaments. Scott remarked
crowded. We dropped to 10 in order to maintain the spacious seating as well as the area between the buddy bars and the bar stools. We wanted enough room for anybody to get in and out of where they are sitting, where nobody should have to get out of the way to make a shot. We spent over $9,000 on smoke eaters - state of the art equipment. You could have 100 people in here smoking and it will not be smokey. We have air conditioning behind the bar for the bartenders and the kitchen staff has their own air conditioning and heating. We have great parking and our lot is fenced on three sides for security purposes and has a rolling gate for added protection. In fact the parking lot is so bright at night that you could sit outside at midnight and read a book! We are really
that he had APA, BCA and STOP (a local tavern league) that all had teams out of Jake’s and he has seen a 50% increase in team count in both the upcoming APA and BCA sessions. This is remarkable since the bar has only been opened a
couple of weeks since mid-January! Scott is continuing the traditions he started at Jammer’s by being a pool players bar. Jake’s is having weekly tournaments three times a week where the house matches the pot. “If a player puts in $5 then the house adds $5 per player. We match 100%,” Scott remarked. Every three months they will continue their Calcutta tournament. January was no exception. The first tournament in the new facility was January 20th (less than a week after opening) and it was a huge success with 20 teams participating. The player auction conducted by Jesse Arismendez brought in an additional $2,190. (The tournament results are on page 21) I asked Scott about his philosophy for running a very successful pool Continued........page 32

On January 20th 2007 Jakes Bar & Grill hosted it 1st tournament at the newly opened bar. Scott & Judy McComas owners of Jammers completed the bar just in time for the BCA 8 Ball Calcutta tournament. It all started on Friday the 19th with the auction of the teams. Jesse Arismendez was the auctioneer and did a great job getting everyone psyched about all the teams. At the end of the auction the total monies paid for the teams was 2190.00. Shawn Self and Jesse Arismendez started the tournament Saturday
with the expectations of finishing in one day. No one thought it was possible but with the 10 tables at Jakes and all the wonderful staff the tournament was done and everyone had collected thier winnings by midnight. $900.00 for 1st place team was Glen Atwell, Kris Kochen & Nalean Clinton $670.00 for 2nd place was a TOTAL surprise because Shawn put the team together at the last minute and needless to say they played great together, Norm Reddenkopp, Phillip Peterson & Linda McLaughlin $450.00 for 3rd place was Bob Heckel, Randy Petz & Becky Heckel $280.00 for 4th Place was Shawn Self, Billy Sexton & Annie Gay The auction team owners were Mike Vego won 876.00

Southwest Oregon APA Fall Session Results
by: RJ & Wild Bill
The Fall Session has produced three more 8-ball teams and two more 9-ball teams for the May Regional. Teams earning these slots will be competing for our two APA National slots. The APA gives out well over a Million Dollars in money awards, trophies and prizes each year between their two National events. The Singles National is in April and the Team National is in August; both are held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. In Josephine County: The Cedarwood Saloon is showing off a 40” High Point Trophy won by their representing team “The Cedarhogs”. The Cedarhogs did an outstanding job but succumbed to the returning determination of the Old Barn’s “Mixed Plate Shooters” who eked out the Division’s Championship and then scooped up that 8-ball regional slot. In 9-ball competition the Old Barn’s “Da Misfits” secured their High Point trophy and held on for their championship.

In Jackson County: The Break Room is strutting tall with representation for all three slots. In 9-ball, “The Smokers” got the High Point trophy and then gave up the Championship to “Handicapped”. In 8-ball, both High Point trophies and the Division Championships went to “New Testament” and “HalfN-Half”. All five Champion Teams will meet to compete in May in a grueling two day tournament and the big bucks to help get them through a full week of competition in Las Vegas. The top prize in the Las Vegas Nationals is a whopping $25,000 with plenty of other prizes and money awards shared among the top performing teams. To learn more, log on to poolplayers.com or for more information in the Southern Oregon area, go to sworegon.apaleagues.com or you can call the local office at 541-5820821. Derby City Shootout
(continued from page 8)
mentioned that he practices mostly straight pool these days. In the final 8, Mika Immonen was the only player who broke 100. He had shown up on the final day of the prelims and ran a 127 his first shot off the airplane. I guess his game travels pretty well. In the finals, he was again the class of the field with an amazing 160. He pulled down $3600 from a $12,200 prize fund — not bad for a single $50 entry. In the diagram are the two standard break shots that most of the players started with. Shot A into the side pocket was introduced to the event last year by Leil Gay. It’s impossible to miss if you put the cue ball pretty close to the object ball, and if the object ball is in the right place the cue ball will land right between the two head balls of the 14-ball rack and have little chance to scratch. Use just a little follow. Shot B is the break shot I like. I prefer a fairly thin cut angle as shown. With right follow, you rarely get into trouble. I like to shoot ten tries of this in my practice sessions. I keep track of total balls made and highest run. If you need a goal to shoot for, you could try to match Immonen who had the 160 and an average of 62.3 balls per turn at the table. I’d be willing to settle for about a third of that on a regular basis. Practice up and I’ll see you in Louisville next year. Open Daily from 5pm - 2am

Hard Times Monthl Monthlyy Results
December and January First Weekend of the Month 9 Ball tournament has consecutive winners for each event for the first time in almost 4 years. Damien Overton from a little town just south of London, has taken up residence in Davis CA. Damien’s 13 years of Snooker experience has proven a very valuable asset for his 9 ball game.
Rarely does Damien miss a shot and has been giving clinics to the very best of the N o r t h e r n California pocket billiard players with his excellent potting skills. Mr. Overton took a vacation for the Christmas Holidays traveling back to his home country to celebrate the holidays. The weekly and monthly players enjoyed his holiday trip.

bar and he remarked, “I’m a great believer in the game of pool. The pool players are just top quality, competitive, not rowdy and supportive in every way, shape and form that you could possibly imagine. Play pool and have fun. Here at Jake’s like Jammer’s we play pool differently than most bars. Whenever we go to the coast we buy our players $500 in housing or when we go to any of the out of town tournaments it’s the same. My wife and I usually take groceries and provide transportation to wherever the play is taking place and things of that nature. Our teams get free T-shirts. The first order of T-shirts was $931 and I just made another order yesterday for $850. When they play at another bar and come back they get a victory drink. We take care of the people that take care of us. We support the people that support us.” Annie Gay is the tournament director at Jake’s and has announced a Women’s 8-Ball Open scheduled for February 24, 2007. The entry will be $10, race to 3 open players, race to 5 master players,
double elimination, paying 25% of the field. Jake’s will be adding $250 based on 32 players. (See the tournament trail page 34) If you are interested or have any questions, call Annie at 503-999-3301. Other tournaments are planned on a semi-pro level. I couldn’t end our conversation without asking about Jammer’s and what’s going to happen there. To this Scott replied, “We are going to take Jammer’s and leave two pool tables down there. We are going to completely reconfigure it, redecorate it; repaint it; recarpet it; restain behind the bar and turn it into a karaoke, dance club with pool tables. We’ll probably run a little league out of there too. It would appear that we already have an overflow at Jake’s.” When I delivered the January issue of The Break, Scott didn’t have Jake’s quite finished and I am looking forward to seeing the finished product on this month’s deliveries. If you are looking for a great place to play pool in Salem, stop in at Jake’s Bar & Grill, 1686 12th St SE or call 503-362-3600 to find out about their upcoming events.

Inter-Divisional 8 Ball Team Championship Tournament III from: Doug Schulze, W. WA. BCA Pool League Operator #287
On Jan. 20-21, 2007 twelve teams from the Tacoma and Federal Way Traveling 8 Ball Divisions competed for the third Western Washington BCA Team Championship Title. This event was sponsored and hosted by Vintage Billiards in Federal Way, WA. and the W. WA. BCA Pool League. The owners of Vintage Billiards, Terry and Mary Smith provided great tournament conditions with the use of twelve 9 Ft. tables. The tables used for this event had Simonis cloth with red circle cue balls. The format was a race to the first 3 rounds won with 4 games in each round. The regular weekly player handicaps were used with the difference being credited at 1.5 the normal rate to the lower team per round. The additional team handicap points create a good challenge to a team with strong players and equalizes the tournament playing field of all teams participating. The next Team Championship
