The remodel and renovation of Rack’em Billiards in Medford, Oregon, ended last fall with the completion of a fresh facade and a deeper appreciation of the challenges of restoring a historical building. After completely remodeling and restoring the interior to the original style of the 1926 ‘Medford Auto Company’ building in the last several years, the exterior was next on the agenda. The exterior facade was removed and replaced with 3 new awnings, stucco, paint, and fresh tile. Rack’em’s location of 20 years falls in the ‘Medford Urban Renewal District’, and ‘The Historic District’, and renovation projects are subject to historical guidelines. A historical preservationist, George Kramer, was brought in to draw plans that were consistent with the 1920s style, while at the same time meeting current codes and requirements. Along with a new electrical system and new A/C units, the entire building had to be engineered and earthquake retrofitted. Finally, a new neon sign was designed and installed to complete the makeover. The patience and experience of Arlan Mendel of Action West Contractors was invaluable, as was the assistance of ‘The Medford Urban Renewal Agency’. A grant from the agency under their ‘Facade Improvement Program’ helped make the project possible. In November, Billiard Digest featured their 20th annual ‘Architecture and Design’ awards and Rack’em was chosen as the best billiard room renovation in the United States. Rack’em also won the Medford Planning Commission’s ‘Historic Preservation Award’, and the mayor presented owners David and Susie Smith with a bronze plaque to be mounted on the building.
Rack’em celebrated it’s 20th anniversary in 2008, and continues to provide a smoke and alcohol free billiard room for all ages and skill levels to enjoy. The third year of our 20+ member 14.1 straight pool league will end soon, and the 2009 league will begin. The USPPA 9-ball tournaments continue, and several players fared well in the recent Sands Regency tournament in Reno. We’ve added a monthly open 9-ball tournament on the third Saturday of each month, and we appreciate the players’ support! Our restaurant, pro shop, and table & cue sales and service keep us busy, and excited to be in the billiard business. Soon we will launch our website ‘OldSchoolPool.com’ which will feature information about our
business and events as well as instructional info on subjects such as cue and tip selection and maintenance, table recovering, and more.

Pretend Pool By Roger Long - Advanced Certified Instructor
If you’re like most people you probably get the jitters when you get into really important matches. I know I used to be like that. I would practice at home until I was confident there was no shot I couldn’t make; then I’d go jump in a tournament and dog everything in sight. Where did my confidence go? Why did that always happen? I know it’s been said far too many times already but I’m going to say it again here - this game is 80% mental. What does that mean? Does it mean that 80% of the game is knowledge? Or Roger Long does it mean that 80% is strategy? Or does it mean that 80% of the time at the table is spent on thinking? No, it doesn’t mean any of those things. What it means is that 80% of your performance will depend on your current state of mind. You see, it all has to do with the efficient combination of confidence and concentration. This is how it works: Your concentration level will be determined by your level of confidence, and your level of confidence will be determined by the quantity and quality of your most recent practice sessions combined with recent competitive experience. In other words, you can’t just practice, practice, practice and then expect to go out and beat everyone. There are going to be plenty others who practice just as much as yourself. So what you have to have going for you – in addition to a well practiced game – is a strong mental game. Now some players never have the problem of being under-confident. As soon as they develop a decent physical game they go right out and fire away at anyone they come across. But let me tell you the truth; that type of player is rare. As I said before, most of us get the jitters as soon as we know others are watching and the games count for something. So is there any way to counteract that? Let me share with you a little technique that I have found to be of some help in my own experiences. First, whenever I would practice I would try to find ways to simulate the pressure of tournament competition. Sometimes I would video tape myself playing matches in which I pretended to be playing in the finals of a world championship where tens of thousands of dollars rested on the outcome and millions of fans were watching on TV. On other occasions I would exchange the videotaping for a scoring system, but would pretend that the same set of circumstances applied. The purpose for both the taping and the scoring was so that there would be a telltale record if I choked the match. This added an element of pressure that while not exactly being the real thing, it was better than nothing at all. Second, whenever I got into a tournament match and found the old nerves creeping in, I would simply reverse the set of circumstances in my mind – I would pretend that I was back at home, practicing. And just as pretending in practice play wasn’t quite as nerve wracking as tournament play, pretending in tournament play wasn’t quite as mellow as practice play; but both helped me concentrate a little better. Break the Glass Ceiling!
By Samm Diep (c) January 2009
The term “glass ceiling” most commonly refers to situations where advancement is stopped at a lower level due to some form of discrimination. In the case of this article, we often times hold ourselves back from advancing because we’re stuck in a place where we have been for so long. We want to improve but we hold ourselves back. We lose to players that we look up to. We tell ourselves, “I’ve never beaten him before. He’s better than me.” In turn, we are the ones discriminating against ourselves and our own abilities. As we improve, we may leave some of our Samm Diep peers behind. We will also inevitably face players that were at one point better than us. By now, we may be pretty even with them or in some cases even better than them. Regardless of how much we admire their game, we can’t lose sight of our own abilities. Remembering how great they are and how much we idolize them only reinforces that glass ceiling. The truth is: we might be able to beat them but if we still look at ourselves as that timid beginner player, then we stand no chance. The only way to break through the invisible barrier we’ve created is to compete, compete, and then compete some more. Hiding out in your basement for two years shooting nothing but drills might give you the knowledge and skills, but it will not give you that competitive edge and tournament toughness required to beat your hero. How well competition pressure is handled is what separates the ball-bangers from the masters. The first couple times we play the local champ, we get our butts handed to us. We go back and practice. The next time, maybe we make some really nice runs but miss the money ball. We go back and practice that shot. In the next tournament, run a few more racks but still lose. We go back and work on our break shot. Until, eventually, we finally beat them. If we continue the hard work, the day will come. We may not beat them again the next time after that, but we now know they’re beatable. They all are. Congratulations, you’ve just taken the first step towards breaking the glass ceiling. Glass ceilings can be set by us, our peers, our family, or any of those random thoughts that creep into our subconscious. We’ll never break through if we don’t believe in ourselves and accept our own improvements. It’s not who you were, it’s the player that you’ve become. Keep practicing, keep competing, and keep breaking through. Please be sure to visit PoolTipJar.com “random smatterings of pool thoughts, articles, & news”. You can take polls, view article archives, and read tournament and training updates. and was hoping for a Tafoya-repeat. The winner of their match would be heading to Vegas with Tokoph. The spectators were not disappointed as the players traded racks in a speedy fashion until the score was hill-hill after only 30 minutes. In the final game, Tafoya broke and, in less than three minutes, thoughtfully picked through the rack for the set and his spot in the NCS Championship. Matches on the feature table were being streamed live all day on the Rack ‘Em Billiards channel on Ustream.tv. Broadcasting was made possible with support from local businesses, Delta-13 and PoolDawg.com. Two Delta-13 racks and a PoolDawg cue & case were raffled off at the end of the day. Rack ‘Em plans to continue the live streaming at upcoming events.
On Saturday, January 17, 2009, Rack ‘Em Billiards in Aurora, Colorado hosted their second qualifier for the National Championship Series. The top two finishers qualify for the NCS 8-Ball Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada held February 13-15 at the Golden Nugget. Though the 10 player turnout was smaller than hoped for, the caliber of the players present was largely impressive. The last men standing were two ‘young’ men from Albuquerque, New Mexico. They drove six and half hours the previous day just to compete for their shot at an entry to Vegas. In the end, their gamble paid off. 22-year-old up-and-comer, Tommy Tokoph and 17-year-old juniors champ, Nick “The Stick” Tafoya worked their way through their respective brackets to meet up for the driver’s seat match. Tokoph would ultimately take that match 64, to secure his admission to Vegas. This would leave Tafoya facing Colorado’s own top player, Andrew “ATM” Pettinger who was sent to the one-loss side earlier by Tokoph. Pettinger had just eliminated Tafoya’s 15-year-old brother Mark

Rack ‘em Billiards in Medford, OR, hosted the second installment of our new monthly 9-ball tournament on Jan. 17. The tournament is a double elimination, race to 5 with alternating breaks and is limited to the first 16 to sign up. Each of the first two have filled well before tournament day, and early sign-ups are encouraged. The level of tournament play in the Southern Oregon area has risen of late as the local pool community has welcomed talented players Linda Carter, Mike Zimmerman, and Jesse Allred to the Rogue Valley. For this event, Mike and Jesse joined local tournament players Terry Mickle, Barney La Montagne, Ken Cavener, and Ward Fortune as favorites for the top spot. Ward Fortune The winners bracket final featured Ward Fortune, who had wins over Ken Smith, Bob Neill, and Chuck Skeen (the defending champion from January) playing Mike Zimmerman who survived matches with Mike Morang, Steve Neesby, and Terry Mickle. Zimmerman won the hot seat battle and would play the winner of the Jesse Allred v. Ward Fortune match in the finals. Fortune got by Allred and bolted to a 6-2 lead in the race to 7 finals with Zimmerman. A few short minutes later, however, the match score stood at 6-6, and Zimmerman was running the case rack. Mike ran into trouble, though, with a tough jacked-up bank on the 7-ball which missed narrowly. Fortune cleaned up the rack and made a long, tough 9 for the hill hill win and the $250.00 first prize. Our thanks go out to all the players and we hope to see you the third Saturday of each month. 1st $250 Ward Fortune 2nd $130 Mike Zimmerman 3rd $80 Jesse Allred 4th $40 Barney LaMontagne

Open 9-Ball Singles Eagles Club #326 Bozeman, Montana. This tournament was played Saturday January 24th with the temperatures in the low single digits a field of 38 pool players braved the elements for a chance of an early win in 2009. The finals featured Mike Schaff and Jeff Grinwis. In an earlier match these two Mike Schaff players went hill-hill before Jeff finally won that match. Mike Schaff also avenged his loss in last year’s finals where he finished 2nd to Jeff Boucher. When I arrived, my son Mike was playing Phil Curry and Mike Schaff was playing Nate Neergaard. Both Mikes won so it was a sure bet that Mike would win the next match. I was giving odds but nobody was taking LOL. Jeff Grinwis Schaff was playing extremely well and won the match to go into the semi finals against Doug Crossman who had just lost to Jeff Grinwis for the point. Mike won that match and then double dipped Jeff in the finals to take the 9-Ball title. From the first match to the last match there was not an easy match played all day.

January 10, 2009 42 pool players turned out for the Colorado Cue Clubs 4th Annual New Year Nineball. This was a barbox event with the races being to 9 and alternating breaks. The final four was made up of familiar names in the Colorado tournament scene. On the winners side Greg Way faced off with Rick Fields. On the one-loss side it was Chris Onesky versus Chris McDaniel. Greg managed to capture the hot seat with 9 to 5 win while McDaniel got a number of rolls to eliminate Onesky 9 to 3. Now it was Fields versus McDaniel for the right to face Way. The break seemed to be the difference as McDaniel cruised to a 93 win. This would turn out to be the final set of the tourney though as it was 2am and both players agreed to an undisclosed settlement. Congrats to all the money finishers! Final Standings: 1st $570 Greg Way 2nd $400 Chris McDaniel 3rd $260 Rick Fields 4th $160 Chris Onesky 5/6 $100 Jeff Crawford, Travis Morton

San Francisco Billiard Academy www.sfbilliards.com In my last column, I promised you some drills for practicing banks. Here are two of them. Drill 1 is as easy as it gets and is intended to build up your confidence while you learn how the cushions behave. Set up a row of balls Bob Jewett about in the middle of the table and bank each in turn cross-side. You get to place the cue ball for each shot. At first try to place the cue ball so the bank is a full-ball hit. Use a firm hit and no side spin on the cue ball. You should be able to make five in a row pretty often before moving on to harder versions. Don’t worry so much about the angles and diamonds — just try to get a feel for the shot. For the first variation, try shooting the shots at different speeds. You will probably find that the first two or three balls are not affected much by the speed of the bank. As you get farther from the side pockets, speed will have an increasing effect. Next add a little side spin. See if you can set up a shot that’s off of straight and correct the line with either spin or speed. The amount of correction depends a lot on the cushions and the cloth, so this is a good bank to

try when you find yourself on an unfamiliar table. For the second variation, place the cue ball so that you are cutting the ball to either the left or right to make the bank. This change actually complicates the shot quite a lot because the cue ball puts some side spin on the object ball as it rubs across it during contact. This transferred spin can be used to make the angle change off the cushion — try it and see. The transferred spin can also be cancelled by using “outside” English on the cue ball so that it rolls rather than rubs across the surface of the object ball. In Drill 2, the goal is to bank four balls crosscorner without repositioning the cue ball between shots — you have to play position for the next bank on each shot. To do this drill well, you will have to master changing the bank angle with spin and speed. You will also have to master precise draw. Four banks in a row is tough even for top players, so don’t get discouraged if you have a lot of 1’s and 2’s. Perfecting this drill is a big help for the sorts of banks used at one pocket.

It started as a spark of an idea. An idea from the same mind who created the Jay Swanson Memorial 13 years ago, who has helped to grow the U.S Bar Table Championships for the past 16 years, and who took ownership of the BCA Pool Leagues almost 5 years ago. This new idea has slowly started to gain recognition nation wide. The brainchild of Mark Griffin, CEO of CueSports International, the National Championship Series (NCS) is days away from its first national event; the NCS 8Ball Championship at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas February 13 -15. The NCS is unique in many regards. Its first national event, the NCS 8-Ball Championship is the first tournament in the country’s
pool history where the winner will move forward to represent the United States at the world level, specifically the WPA World 8-Ball Championship. Another unique aspect of the NCS is its openness to all U.S players, men, women, amateur and professional and where membership is not required to any organization or association. The NCS is a series of national championships in five cue disciplines: 8-Ball, 9-Ball, 10Ball, 14.1 Continuous and One Pocket. It is also the first to encourage knowledge and growth in multiple games. In the past five months the team at CSI scheduled 8-Ball qualifiers all over the country. The NCS system encourages players to participate in their local and regional pool rooms. Depending
on the qualifier tournament turnout, each qualifier sends 1-4 players. CSI set up the qualifiers to offer the opportunity for players to participate in a pro-style event but without the necessity of paying a large national level entry fee. The qualifier entry amounts around the country have ranged from $40 - $125 depending on host room and location. However each spot is valued at $550, of which 90% goes directly into the prize fund at the national level. The remainder is used by CSI to help pay for advertising and promotional materials sent to qualifier host rooms to help market their qualifiers. The NCS is a grass roots and team effort on multiple levels. There is team CSI, out of Henderson, Nevada and

numerous qualifier host rooms and independent promoters who believe in the NCS and what it can do for the sport. Now with the NCS 8-Ball Championship around the corner, the NCS is beginning to schedule qualifiers for the following cue disciplines: 9-Ball, 10-Ball and 14.1 Continuous. The NCS 9-Ball and NCS 10-Ball Championships will be scheduled for the second half of 2009. Additionally negotiations are in process for the NCS 14.1 Championship and NCS 1-Pocket Championship locations and dates.

NEW - The OB Break Cue and OB Break Shaft by OB Cues OB Cues is proud to announce the OB Break Cue and the OB Break Shaft. Using technology similar to OB Shafts, the “OB Break Cue” will complete your game. Both the OB Break Cue and the OB Break Shafts are made by OB Cues right here in the USA. Just like OB Shafts, the OB Break Shaft will also fit most popular cues. The OB Break Cue uses Quad Lam construction, Samsara tips, and a special Compound Taper to maximize power. When combined with the OB Break Shaft you have the best combination of power and accuracy, and control. Royce Bunnell of OB Cues said from his Plano, Texas shop, “OB Cues strives to be the full complement to a player’s repertoire: low-deflection shafts, OB Cues, and now The Break Cue.” The OB Break Cue will be launched at the Derby City Classic. Three handicap tournaments weekly, three different systems! How do they work? USPPA The USPPA is an “inning count” system. Your average is based upon the number of trips you make to the table per game. Example: A professional would usually make between 6 and 8 trips to the table to win five games. An amateur would make 20 or more trips. Each inning (trip to the table) is an X of an S on the sheet. The USPPA formula computes five factors determining your average. Those factors are (1) your average (2) your opponent’s average (2) games won (3) total X’s (4) total S’s. Or something like that. It’s a secret system. What I like about the USPPA is this: Only your most recent 100 sheets are retained. They are sorted by average (your best performances come to the top) and then the BEST set is tossed and the next THIRTY determine your actual playing average. This means that if you think you can “hold your average down” by playing really bad against a lower-rated player, THAT MATCH WON’T COUNT! The most important thing with a scorekeeping system is ensuring uniform, accurate scorekeeping throughout the system. NPL The National Pool League handicaps are much simpler. No score keeping. Just like a bowler, you can easily compute your own rating after each tournament. This system was given to me early in 1994 by Bob Jewett after I had been running USPPA trademarks since 1988. I wanted a transparent formula, not a secret one. And I didn’t want scorekeeping! With Bob’s NPL system, for example, when Edstanley Suguitan won the January 10 tournament at Billiard Palacade he was a 27. He lost his first match, bought back and won the tournament. He knew his 4-1 record would raise his rating to 30. He also won the next tournament, and sure enough, he went up to 34. So today, when he plays an opponent who spotted him one game on January 10, he will play that same player with no spot. If any player complains about his opponent’s rating I can simply show him the guy’s won-loss record. On this system, the better players are winning slightly more often than the lower-rated players. Thanks, Jewett.
TRU-SPOT As Frank Giordano says: Start with the Race-to-5 Spot Chart that you have on your USPPA sign-up sheet, the three columns of Ratings that appear next to each Rating from 10 to 162, the chart that we use to determine the spot of a USPPA match. There is a formula behind that chart, it is a “simple” formula that spits out the EXACT spot when the TD inputs the players’ ratings. For example, if I (54) play Marshall (103) in a Match, the spot chart reveals a 2-game spot for me. But, the Spot formula spits out a 2.38 game spot for me. Currently, the USPPA chops off the 0.38 games from my spot—as they should—and I get 2 games on the wire in a race to 5. Now, here’s where TruSpot comes into play. AFTER the match, a correction is made to both players’ ratings so there is no wasted spot. For example, if Marshall wins the Match 5-3, I would input that match score into the TruSpot formula and our corrected ratings would spit out—mine is 44 and Marshall’s is 112. Looking at the Spot Chart that we currently use, find 112 and you will see that a 44 gets an EXACT 3 game spot, no decimal part of a game to chop off. And, looking back at the match, Marshall could have given me 3 games and still have won the hill-hill match, the goal of any handicapping system! After many such matches, I simply average the player’s corrected Ratings to arrive at their TruSpot Average. In time, I will compare this to the player’s current USPPA Average, derived from their Score Sheet process, and go from there. If a 100 plays a 60 in a race to 5, the 2 game spot is EXACT. But, you have to admit, when the 100 plays a 61 and gives only 1 game...something is wrong there, and TruSpot corrects that error AFTER the match. This is interesting: In my match with Marshall, if he wins the match 5-4, my rating actually increases and Marshall’s decreases. This may seem counter-intuitive at first, but it makes perfect sense. In this scenario, my TruSpot rating for the match would be 58 and Marshall’s would be 98. Looking at the Spot chart next to 98, you’ll see that 58 gets EXACTLY 2 games. This makes sense since I managed to get to the Hill even after losing my 0.38 game spot, so I played a little better than 54 and Marshall played a little worse than 103.

February 2009 All the top spots changed at the monthly Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’s Billiards on January 4, 2009. David Randell won first place to Justin Lilje by default as the weather started to turn nasty and Justin forfeited to get back home in one piece. Tracy Fanin and Sam Rabito played through to the bitter end to take 3rd and 4th place, respectively. Surprisingly, Bob Zack was eliminated early in a loss to Reid Rasmusson, who later lost to David Randell. Todd Gooch, who won the December tournament, lost to Aubrey Robinson and Reid Rasmusson in the finals. Mitchell Henderson, the only player to make the finals in each of the past two months, lost to Sam Rabito and David Randell Tracy Fanin in the finals. 1st $80 David Randell 2nd $60 Justin Lilje 3rd $45 Tracy Fanin 4th $30 Sam Rabito High Run: 24 - Justin Lilje Just a reminder: Players are encouraged to cap their frustrations and not vent during their matches, particularly when their opponents are at the table. Of course, most of you understand this; it’s sad when someone doesn’t. All in all, this was a good tournament, and I think most of the players and audience enjoyed themselves. The next 1st-Sunday-of-the-month Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’s Billiards is February 1, 2009. Everyone who is at Sam’s Billiards by 11 AM with the $15 entry fee is eligible to play. Tables are open for practice from 10 AM. For information about the 14.1 Winter League (deadline for entry: February 8), contact Bill Bradford at wrbradford@aol.com.

One Pocket at Sam’s Billiards PORTLAND, OR The national organization for the regional pool association Western BCA recently allowed qualifying through singles formats of one pocket and straight pool or 14:1. Since Sam’s Billiards has a successful 14:1 league established through Bill Bradford, Vanessa and Sam Rabito, Western BCA division managers for Sam’s, decided to start a one pocket division. It plays on Sundays at noon except when the monthly straight pool tournament plays. Nationally, the singles divisions will qualify players for singles and s c o t c h doubles at the BCA tournament in Vegas in May. Regionally in Western BCA, it is being discussed to allow players who qualify through a singles division to be able to join a team as the fourth or fifth player. Players with eight weeks of play will be qualified through Northwest Players League. If you’ve never played one pocket before it can be simply described as a game which demands ultimate cue ball control and patience. The format for the one pocket league is three players per match and table. They each play the other three times for a total of six games. The scoresheet, created by Vanessa, maps out the round robin pairings complete with who racks and breaks. There is a time limit so
it tends to bring out the aggressive part of the game. Handicapping allows for a balance between the beginners and experienced. If player A has a handicap of 4 and player B is a 2, player A goes to 8 and B goes to 6. Even if A wins by pocketing 8 and B doesn’t pocket any balls, B gets 2 on their scoresheet. Players will get money back according to performance in the first week of March and we will start the next one pocket session in April. Though some fine tuning will take
place for the next session, everyone is enjoying the format. For some, it is the only way they would qualify for BCA. Others have already qualified and want a change from the team format during the weeknights and a few just want to play one pocket. We already have people signed up for the next session to play on the 9 foot Gold Crowns with Super Pro Aramiths at Sam’s Billiards. Thursday is the team format of Western BCA out of Sam’s and the 14:1 league plays at their own discretion. If you are interested in playing BCA league out of Sam’s, contact Sam Rabito at td@westernbca.org or call 503.213.3125

DVPOOL held their Christmas party at Vinnie's Bar and Grilled this past December. 6th, 2008.. Owner Parker and Jeannie were gracious to host the event and offer a delicious meal at a discount rate for all participating league members. We had a full house with a total of 50 guests attending for dinner and 42 pool players competed in the Scotch Doubles tournament that evening. As usual Cony and Tina Mendoza alternated the running of the board and a great time was had by everyone. We want to take a moment to mention the fact that the winners of the event Holly Robinson and Jason Williams have dominated the event since
we started our now traditional Christmas party 4 years ago. They have won the event 3 out of 4 years. Congratulations to them …. they are the best .... (Bounty next year?) 1 Holly-Jason $280 2 Kacie-George $230 3 Carol-Joe $180 4 Wendy-Kevin $135 5 Darla-Gary $58 6 Annette-Jeff $58 DVPL added $100

Another successful event for the women's league took place last Sunday the 23rd of November, at 1:00 pm at The Diablo Lanes, when 15 women showed to participate in the event. it was a 9 ball tourney , for a change of pace, a race to 3 on the winner side and a race to two on the looser side. After a long day Shawn Modelo, who struggled earlier in the tourney, came back strong to win the event. Congratulations to her .She are still one of the best, in my eyes. The final standings at the end of the day read as such: 3) Annette $40 1) Shawn Modelo $100 4) Kristen $20 2) Kacie $70
