Cascade Pool League Awards Bash Cascade Pool League And Sponsors Send Lucky Winner to Hawaii Portland’s Cascade Pool League held its 9th annual Awards Bash at

a card signed by many who attended the Bash. Moving the Bash to Rodder’s Pub and Grub allowed CPL’s many members to spread out a little this year. Having extra tables made it possible to add extra pool events, and a non-smoking area provided breathable air. Rodders is fast becoming one of the best pool sponsors in the entire northwest. Not only did they host the 9th annual Bash, but they added $1000 to the Hawaii trip. CPL’s other sponsors also added to the trip, including Pub 181 and Jeff’s Hangout in Gresham, Pastimes in Fairview, Skyland in Troutdale, Full Moon in Boring, Dukes, Classics, Peanut Farm, Station 66 and 39th St Pub in SE Portland, Wichita on King Road and Jake’s in Sellwood. At the Bash, members were able to purchase raffle tickets, making the draw even more exciting. Besides the annual Awards Bash, every one of their 300 plus giveaways and prizes, and look forward to the next pool session. This players receives a strong payout, for starters. This year the day-long team teaching event will be held at Classic Billiards in Portland on March 24. Thanks to the participation, support and input from all its players, Cascade Pool League continues to provide fun, competitive challenges, experiences to remember for a lifetime, a community of friends, and a pool family that cares. Cascade Pool League will be entering its 10th year in the East Portland, Milwaukie, Gresham, Troutdale, Boring and Oregon City areas, operating year round. CPL is both BCA Pool League and VNEA sanctioned. You don’t have to be a great player to play in CPL - you’ll know you’ve found the right league if you like to play your best and have fun while doing it. CPL wants to acknowledge the following members for their invaluable help with producing its all-day Awards Bash — Division Managers Steve Marker, Joyce Gumm, and Andrew ‘Squigz’ Zuniga and other contributing members Kurt Hamm, Sassy Campbell, Denise Marker, Cecil Pickett, and Starla Mixon Donations were graciously given by John and Cathy Johnson, owners of Rodders, Paul Chang of PCC Products, Carissa Biggs of On The Wire, Dave Randell of Bigfoot Billiards, Dan (The Man) Rohlfing, for handcrafted cueholders, Kurt Hamm for a set of Aramith balls, and others who brought things in as they came. Embroidered jackets were presented to: Tim Leslie, John Lewis and Loren Taylor for 5 years of perfect attendance. Men’s Division MVP awards went to Sean Stevenson of the Cheetah Division, Aaron Curti of the Lynx Division, Eugene Gee of the Ocelot Division, Jeff Leiss of the Panther Division, Herb Johnson of the Cougar Division and Bobby Charitar of the South Coast Division.

Women’s Division MVP awards were captured by Susan Millhollin of the Cheetah Division, Kim Allen of the Lynx Division, Jennifer Windell of the Ocelot Division, Lynda Fanning of the Panther Division and Bonnie Jones of the Cougar Division. All League ‘All Stars’ were Event Table Herb Johnson & Bonnie Jones. They came away with the best overall performance out of 312 players. Congratulations to both Herb and Bonnie for an outstanding year! been a previous NWPA member received a special purse of a 2007 NWPA Membership, WPBA Amateur Membership and entry to our first 2007 tournament at the Parlor in Bellevue, WA. This prize worth $125, plus the added tournament money, was graciously donated by Shotze’s With all the tables available to the players, we were able to hold a round robin event. This let everyone play a large amount of games and also allowed new players to play against all the NWPA members. At the end, we welcome a new member in Crystal Opoka. She played, as a non-member, in our final 2006 event and won it. She started with some big wins and had to hold on at the end to take 1st. In second, was Tamre’ Rogers, our President, who had no big wins, but no loses. Another non-member with a strong showing was Tracy Ahlstrom, who finished 3rd, and one of our favorite players, Junko Camantigue started the first half of the tourney tied for first and held on for fourth. My thanks to Darryl and all of Shotze’s for their support, especially Ford, who’s help to our tour has been immeasurable. I hope to see everyone, player and spectators, at the Parlor on March 3rd and 4th. 2007 WPBA Carolina Classic

The first event on the 2007 schedule of the WPBA was the Carolina Classic hosted by Rocky Mount, North Carolina. For the third year in a row the Gateway Center was the location of all the activities. The festivities started off with a Pro-Am event, free to the public on Wednesday, February 21st and the tournament running from the 22nd to the 25th. Ga Young Kim was crowned the winner after defeating Xioting Pan in a close match 7-6. The finals was a single elimination format with the final 16 players. The 8 players from the one loss bracket were a blind draw into the final 8 in the winners bracket. On Ga Young’s way to the Championship she Ga Young Kim defeated Tracie Hines 9-1, Monica Webb 9-7 and Allison Fisher 7-2 before facing and defeating Xioting Pan. Ms Pan defeated Kelly Fisher 9-8, Tiffany Nelson 9-4 and Vivian Villarreal 7-3 for the opportunity to face Ga Young. Local player Morgan Steinman from Hamilton, Montana finish in a respectable 9th place. Morgan got her start winning the Montana Coin Machine Operators Association’s State 8-Ball Championships. Morgan captured the title in 2001, 2003 and 2005. Bigger and Richer Than Ever (LINCOLN CITY, Ore.) -March 13-18, 2007, the Western BCA regional 8-ball tournament takes place at Chinook Winds Casino and Resort in Lincoln City, Ore. There will be singles, teams and mixed scotch play with levels from novice to master. With 1,100-plus players entered in this year’s 8-ball tournament and more than $95,000 total payout money, the 8-ball tournament shows outstanding growth from last year. These figures translate into an almost an 18 percent increase in players entered and more than 31 percent increase in total payout. Added money is up $6,000. Total number of entries for all events is up 26 percent. Not only have entries and monies increased, but also membership in WBCA has increased. Membership stands aat 2,676 in 2007. The board is considering plans to increase membership even more. WBCA regional tournaments have been held at Chinook Winds since 1998. It was shortly after the first tournament at Chinook Winds that WBCA separated the 8- and 9-ball tournaments. The tournaments have gone quite seamlessly with one exception -a snowstorm in the Rockies stalled the pool table arrival for 9-ball, forcing the cancellation of the scotch portion of play that year. Thankfully, the tables did arrive in time for singles and teams. This year there will be numerous giveaways to players during the tournament. One of the big giveaways is a free room for one of the players. WBCA is excited about this year’s tournament and WBCA growth. This year’s tournament should be better than ever. ALL DAY POOL SEMINAR Saturday March 24th Third Year of workshops/seminars Presented By Classic Billiards And Cascade Pool League The 5 hour seminar is geared to instruct pool players of all skill levels. The seminar will be divided into five different areas of essential pool information and skill development, each taught by a different instructor. The goal of the seminars is to for top players to share inside information, skills and techniques on fundamentals, shot execution, concentration and focus, methods and systems, shot making, game strategy, and more. Every participant will benefit from the full day experience and with diligent practicing on the information provided. Players will leave this seminar with practical tools, applicable skills and greater confidence. The first of a series of planned team teaching session is set this season for Saturday March 24th, at Classics Billiards, beginning at 12 noon. Each seminar is limited to 30 students. The instructors for the seminar at Classic Billiards are Glen Atwell, Andrew Monstis, John Moribito and Pat Schumacher. Individually, each instructor has 20 to 35 years of high level playing experience and all have teaching experience, either formally or informally. Discussion are going on to have a second day on Sunday 25th for those who can’t make Saturday. This project is possible because of the help from Cascade Pool League, a BCA & VNEA players’ league for ten years, Classic Billiard Pool Hall on 122nd and SE Powell in Portland, Bigfoot Billiards, a table manufacturing, refurbishing and recovery business in Troutdale. Thanks to outside sponsorship, the cost of this seminar, normally almost $200, is only $60. With instruction at $35-40 and hour this is a great deal. Are you ready to pick up your game? Object ball letters coincide with corresponding pocket letters. To set this shot up position B ball as shown, not quite centered over pocket B. The B ball should be 1/2 balls width out from the long rail. The C ball is frozen to B ball with allowance for throw effect on C ball to pocket C. The D ball is centered between pocket points. The cue ball is in hand, or as the diagram suggests. Put the bridge on rail tops as in diagram with a chalk cube under the handle on rail. Make sure C ball will go under the bridge, if not put something under bridge head to raise bridge higher. The C ball edge closest to bridge is flush to back edge of bridge. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball with a jump stroke into B ball. The cue ball then jumps up and over the bridge, goes around three cushions and goes under the bridge to D ball. Make all three object balls as pocket letter designated. The cue ball may hit the bridge on the way over and may contact an extra cushion by D ball. A scratch is also allowed. Here are some helpful hints on executing this great shot. On new cloth place the cue ball closer to ball B. With the cue ball jumping into B ball understand that the carom angle of the cue ball off the B ball would not be the same as if aiming without the jump. Why? Because you are contacting B ball in the air and hitting the B ball thinner. If the cue ball goes under the bridge on it’s way to D ball don’t use the cube of chalk, it is optional. Most people hit the shot too hard and jump the balls off the table. This shot is executed with a moderate jump stroke. San Francisco Billiard Academy A year ago I gave you some thin cuts to work on in which you had to make the shot progressively more difficult until you couldn’t make it half the time. If you missed that issue, it’s available on the On The Break News website in the articles archive. Now I’m going to ask you to control the cue ball on thin cuts. In the diagram is a common situation, at least for me. It would have been better to have gotten position on an easier shot, but you have to shoot this 70-degree cut and control the cue ball. Can you? The diagram shows the “difficult” position. Try starting with the cue ball at the easy position. The Bob Jewett goal is to make the ball and get the cue ball to land near the selected spot. Start with spot 1. Is it possible to make the shot, and have the cue ball go towards “1” but not reach it? How far does the cue ball travel if the object ball barely gets to the pocket? It’s important to know this for various cuts since it tells you if certain position plays are possible. Can you leave the cue ball within a hand-span of 1? Next, try to bring the cue ball off 1 and back down the table. When I have this shot, the next ball seems to always be at that end of the table. Note that if you hit between 1 and 2, there is no chance of scratching if the cue ball gets back to the other end rail. Now repeat the drill with the needed side spin to get the cue ball to end near 2 and 3 and then crank the speed to return to the other end of the

table. Try those three landing spots with the cue ball starting at the harder positions. The next rail spots, 4, 5 and 6, are considerably harder to master since they take quite a bit of side spin. Again, try them first from the “easy” cue ball position and work up to the hard position. When you have a thin cut like this with a lot of side spin, it is very important to visualize the whole shot. See how far out on the cue ball you’re going to hit. Imagine the curve of the cue ball on the way to the object ball. Decide before you shoot just how far the cue ball is supposed to go up the table. Making up your mind about all of these things before you shoot is essential for success. If you haven’t really decided on the speed, then the English, swerve and throw are all up in the air as well. While complete visualization is important for all shots, it’s particularly important on cuts with side spin because of all the factors that have to be blended correctly.

Ga Young Kim: En Route to Victory

On Friday, February 16th, I stopped by the Wynkoop downtown to check out an exhibition match between Melissa Little and (at the time) two-time WPBA champion, Ga Young Kim. In town for only a couple days before heading to North Carolina for the 2007 Carolina Classic Stop, Ga Young graced us with a strong performance against Melissa and some challenge matches with spectators. Table 2, the gorgeous black and chrome Brunswick Gold Crown IV, often referred to as “my table” by Melissa would be the sight of the showdown. Before they arrived, the balls were washed and the table was brushed. Chairs were set up around the table and the crowd was starting to gather. Players of all levels came to watch some quality pool. Enter: Melissa and Ga Young. They each warmed up by throwing the nine Samm Diep balls on the table and just shooting them in no particular order. When it was Ga Young’s turn to warm up, she shot the balls in, selecting mostly longer, more difficult shots, slamming each one in the center of the pocket at near break speed. Known for her fast and furious style, she used this time to loosen up and really let her stroke go. If she missed, she set that shot back up and shot it again until she made it. The match began. The format was a race to nine, winner breaks. Melissa broke and scratched in the first rack and would not see a ball until the fifth rack. Ga Young completely dominated the games. Her breaks were solid and most racks were wide open and friendly. Melissa Little, Ga Young Kim In one game, after her opening break, she ran the entire rack in 46 seconds flat. Yikes! With a few safety battles in the middle of the set and a couple errors by Ga Young, the match still ended in her favor, 9-4. Afterwards, I had a chance to speak with her briefly and learned a few things I didn’t know about Ga Young Kim: Korean native, she moved to Taiwan a couple years ago to pursue pool. “There’s more pool in Taiwan,” she said, “you don’t have to drive more than 20 minutes for pool.” Sadly, she left behind her parents in Korea, but her sister now lives with her in Taiwan to attend Mandarin school. When asked if the tables played the same in the states, she explained that the tables in Taiwan have much tighter pockets. What about gambling? Is there much gambling in Taiwan? “There used to be more but too many people know who the good players are now.” Ga Young is quite the impressive linguist. She didn’t start learning English until 2004 when she began playing pool. Without learning it in school, she just picked up things from her friends on the tour. Now, she’s also fluent in Mandarin (the primary language in Taiwan, along with Taiwanese) and also speaks some Cantonese courtesy of her Hong Kong boyfriend. Lastly, when asked where “The Little Devil” came from she simply responded, “I don’t know. People started calling me that. a nEW fACE FOR AN OLD hAG As time goes by in what is left of my years it becomes Pat Sheehan more and more a fact the restoring a tired older table can be more work and take a lot more time than building a brand new copy of the old one. Even though I have been fixing up the old ones since I was nine years old each one brings out a new challenge; offers a new approach; teaches a new lesson. I sold Mike McMenamin a table that I had in inventory for many years and I was getting tired of paying storage on it and all the other older tables that I have been moving with me to all the locations that I have kept them in for all these years. Mike likes Quarter sawn oak and he wanted 4 1/2 x 9’s for his newest place “ the Spar “ in Olympia and this Mission style suited Mike’s plan if I could The Mission tables for the Spar in Olympia. Antique table in foreground do a match. The match took less than 30 man hours for my son and Aaron to bring to the point of applying the tints and Orange Shellac; however, the Original got wet in storage and the veneer had peeled and the corners of the frame had come apart. I spent over 100 hours getting the table reglued, veneer put back and finished. It’s a lot harder to match colors on an old table for the side and end exposed to the day-light for 70 years is not going to have the same character as the ones that have been in the shade. The flake on 100 year old Quarter sawn oak table is much larger and defined than you can find today and the contrast more pronounced. Both tables look alike but to me the old one is the more beautiful, but you can judge for yourself. The Spar is on fourth, 1 block off Capital in Olympia. From the Heckman restoration. Holes for the pockets Just as we finished drilled incorectly and restorer replaced pockets with the Spar I got a call modern # 6 which will not fit antique from the Heckman’s right here in Scappoose. Three years ago they had their table completely restored by someone calling themselves Antique table specialists. The cushions they put on had completely fallen off. The rail cloth had pulled out of the feather strips and the pockets did not even come close to fitting. They did not know that hard finishes will not stick to Rosewood so it blistered. Worse yet, years ago when it was converted, the person in charge managed to cut 5 of the six rails short and mess up Continued........page 32

STUN “Stun” is a term I borrowed years ago from the English game of snooker to describe shots in which the cueball hits an object ball with no (or very little) topspin or backspin. In other words, the cueball is sliding rather than rolling at the moment of impact. A sliding cueball that hits an object ball squarely stops dead in its tracks: the so-called stop shot. It pays to master it at all distances. If a sliding cueball hits an object ball at an angle, it caroms off along the tangent line (the right-angle line). It takes experience, judgement and touch to make the cueball roll to a stop at any given point on the tangent line. A cueball struck in the exact center (on the equator) starts out sliding and gradually takes on natural roll. If the cueball is only a foot or two from the object ball, hitting the cueball in the center with a firm stroke will cause it to stop on impact with the object ball, but for greater distances, draw must be used, unless you shoot extremely hard. At the length of the table, use maximum backspin and choose a speed that allows the backspin to wear off just as the cueball hits the object ball and before it has picked up natural roll. Doing that consistently at distances of five feet or more takes considerable skill.

Billiards - Darts Game Room Furnishings Stun Practice At the top are straight-in shots at various distances. To stop the cueball at impact with no sideways drift requires both slide and a dead-center hit, not easy at a distance of six feet. Many a position play is ruined when a lack of precision on the object-ball hit causes the cueball to drift right or left along the tangent line. In the diagram, a centerball hit will suffice for the 1-ball if firm speed is used. To stop the cueball and make the 4-ball requires a low hit on the cueball. At the bottom, the goal is to make the 5-ball and let the cueball follow just a few inches. To do that, the cueball must have stopped sliding and picked up just a little natural roll. Pro snooker players are uncanny at making the cueball roll any desired distance after the impact, a shot they call “stun run-through”

Three weeks ago, Dr. Cue Billiards in Seattle, announced that Corey Deuel would be coming on Monday, 22 January to “give private lessons to a customer.” The announcement continued, “Corey will have time to give a few other private lessons.” A few of us began getting in the queue although times and cost remained unknown. Excitement began to mount, especially during the weekend before the big arrival. More players than usual were at the Doctor’s when it opened at eleven Monday morning. “When’s he coming?” everyone asked. “His plane gets in around ten tonight,” we were told. By late afternoon, the house was full; it seemed like every “player” in the Puget Sound was in the front room running tables with effortless enthusiasm. Ten came and went. Around eleven somebody said His plane had just gotten in. A few of us hung around till midnight and then went home to anticipatory sleep. For the next four days Corey and his student were huddled in the back room deep in their Master Class. The rest of us would glance over now and then, trying to be inconspicuous, hoping to pick up even the tiniest pearl from this young phenom. My ears pricked up when I saw Him hold up a ball and say to His student, “My aiming system is...” Meanwhile, the one-pocket action in the front room was first-rate among the likes of Danny, Tommy, JD, Harry and others. A few lucky Dr. Cue regulars got an hour of billiard pedagogy from Corey before he took on the crème when school was over. Dumb as it sounds, a lot of us went to the Tuesday night tournament hoping that Corey Deuel would play. Yeah, and George Bush is going to learn to say “nuclear!” Anyway, the air was thick with excitement as balls clicked with brisk authority in anticipation of the action soon to come on “table one.” No such luck as Corey remained in the back room in close conference with his student and somehow escaped unnoticed around ten. Waiting was worth it though as Danny and Tommy treated us to another of their inimitably elegant contests. Wednesday night it was JD who had the honors, taking home a handsome

reward for his efforts, helped perhaps, by the fact that I was taking pictures of Corey without realizing that my (digital) camera throws out a conspicuously bright red focusing beam...the poor guy was probably stunned but too courteous to come over and shove my camera down my throat. I don’t know who won what on Thursday night but when I arrived at ten on Friday night Harry Platis and Corey were in a close one-pocket match with an impressive collection of railbirds and sharks in the shadows glued to every stroke. By eleven the first match was over with Mr. Platis taking home the bacon. Shadowy negotiations were whispered, money counted and JD was appointed to hold the dough and Harry broke to begin another match. As the game progressed it was obvious that Corey was not in his best form, which is not to say that he did not make some beautiful shots. But Harry Platis is not a millionaire lawyer for no reason; he was emboldened by Corey’s indifferent play and at one point, seemingly left with nothing, pulled out a spectacular Z bank to run out his four balls. Apparently, Harry had agreed to play at ten-five but, for some inscrutable reason Corey gave him an extra point and offered eleven-five plus the break! Notwithstanding Harry’s hubris, why would anyone say to a shark, “Well, tell you what, I’ll give you both legs and bet I can escape!” Harry did play one of the best matches of his life and even kept his mouth shut. And this was not the Corey Deuel who had recently beaten “The Magician.” Once, Harry missed a ball completely and left the cue ball down at the far-end rail; ball-in-hand for Mr. Deuel. A whisper went through the crowd, “He’s got ball-in-hand!” Corey just shot it off the rail with eight feet of green between and missed what should have been a duck. A while later, Corey came over to where I was sitting and lamented to Dan Louie who was standing next to me, that whenever he played on that particular table he missed rail shots and Dan suggested changing chalk. Somebody else called Jeff, one of the owners, who is a master technician, to come down and put a new tip on Corey’s cue. We all wondered why a guy like Corey Deuel didn’t have an extra shaft. But Corey went back to the table and continued making mystery misses until Harry sank his five balls and a very thick wad of Franklins was tossed out of the dark onto the shimmering Simonis. Harry drifted off to the side with uncharacteristic modesty while Corey stood furiously beside the table digging his thumbnail into his tip trying desperately to rip it off. He broke his nail and the tip remained steadfast. I offered my Leatherman but he stalked back to his chair and shoved everything in his case and his big eyes darted around looking for solace like a wet cat. He might have been willing to stay longer but Harry announced that he had been up since six that morning defending people’s rights and he would be back tomorrow to prove that he wasn’t afraid of anybody. Two of the habitués began a new game of one-pocket and I drove home sadder and wiser.

Val Alvarado Earns His A-Status By Randy Camantigue

Uncle Jack’s Billiards & Lounge hosted another 9-Ball B/below tournament on January 27, 28 2007 and Val Alvarado earns the right to be an A-player by proving it on the green felt. Our B-tournaments have been criticized by some for having good players many would feel are A-players. I would like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that A-players in Portland area for instance may not necessarily be an A-player in the Seattle / Tacoma area this isn’t just my opinion but facts of life. To have an A-status as a player in the Seattle/Tacoma area you must win a tournament that has 48 or more of the best B-players the area has to offer. We have given past B Champions here at Uncle Jack’s like Marlon Oliveros, James Davee and Val Alvarado a chance to show everybody that they are indeed A-players in the Seattle/Tacoma area. It’s one thing if someone says you are an Aplayer but we feel you must prove it to be considered one here at Uncle Jack’s. Val Alvarado prove it alright by beating Gary G 7-5, Shane S 7-1, George S 7-4, Al Perez 7-3 and came in Sunday sending a message to all that’s left in the tournament that he was the one to beat by dispatching Scott R 8-0 and got on the hot seat by beating a up and comer in Marvin H 8-4. Our Runner-up Kevin Ross was having a great tournament. After losing to Ben H he regroup and won against Gary G 7-5, Larry D 7-6, Chuckie 8-3, Scott T 8-4, Scott R 8-4, Rocky 8-6, and punch his ticket to the finals by beating Marvin H 8-5. With a one race to 11 Val and Kevin played a match worthy of a final going hill-hill for the Championship. Schooner Tavern Team win in Oak Harbor

On Saturday and Sunday, February 17-18, 2007, the American Legion in Oak Harbor, WA, hosted its annual 4-Player Team 8-Ball Tournament, awarding $4,130 in prize money. The tournament was played on 7 - 4x8 tables spread among the American Legion, Harbor Light Tavern and PW Murphy’s. 19 teams for a total of 76 players showed up from as far south as Lakewood, WA, and as far north as Vancouver, BC. This was a 60% better turnout than we had last year, so 6 places were paid! Some great matches were played and fun was had by all.

with a payout of over $15,000.00 was played at Alexander’s Sports Bar on February 9th thru 11th, 2007. Billy Palmer, fresh off his win two weeks ago at the Jay Swanson Memorial Tournament in Hollywood, California, came from the one-loss side to defeat Jeremy Jones in the finals of the Dustoff. No one can remember, at least for the past decade or two, an Arizona field as strong as the one at this years Desert Dust-off. The players came from twelve different states and two even made the trip to Alexander’s from Canada. Billy Palmer defeated Jose Parica in the loser bracket finals to advance to the one race to (13) games finals where he met up with hot seat winner, Jeremy Jones. Billy jumped out to a 10-3 Chuck and Jeremy Jones lead in the finals then waited for his chance to close the match out as “Double J” made his run to close the gap to 11-9. Billy won the next game to get on the hill (12-9) then won the match and the tournament when Jeremy called a foul on himself in the next game. With Billy on the hill, Jeremy attempted a safe but failed to get a ball to a rail. As Billy approached the table, Jeremy informed him that he had not “got a rail” and Billy had cue ball in hand. Billy took advantage of a ball in hand 3-10 combo to close out the match and win his second tournament in two weeks. Billy Palmer collected $5,425.00 for his win. Jose Parica finished in third while Alexander’s

own Tony Confalone finished fourth. Arizona’s Jimmy Mendoza, with his 7th place finish, was the second Arizona player to finish in the top eight. Arizona’s Chuck Evans and Mitch Ellerman broke the top ten with their 9th - 12th finish. Other Arizona players in the cash were Mike Williams, Doug Hale, Ray Robles, Brad Johnson, and Jeremy Nelson who all finished 17th - 24th. Jose Parica Justin Whitehead and Gus Briseno finished 25th - 32nd. On a special note, Brandon Butler, who can be found practicing and playing league at Alexander’s just about every day or night, also finished in the cash with his 25-32 place finish. Brandon is an eight rated player on the Arizona Ratings list and truly deserves a special mention when you consider the strength of this 119 player field. Well done Brandon! Former #1 in the world, Kim Davenport, and Arizona’s Scott Frost, did not make the cash. Grady Mathews presents a new show: “The History of Pool by the Professor” at Full Splice Billiards in Lakewood, WA April 21, 2007 at 1:30 pm. Relive great players and matches from history as The Professor presents an entertaining and educational glimpse into the fantastic history of pocket billiards. Nobody puts on a show like Grady Mathews, and this one is no exception! The Professor will share valuable photographs from his valuable collection showcasing five generations of pool’s greatest Grady Mathews champions. Pool stories, road tales, and personal anecdotes will be accompanied by hours of trick shots, fancy shots and a question and answer period for the crowd. Photograph and autograph sessions are included. This show has already played to fantastic reviews and is a real crowd pleaser and

After Grady’s presentation on the History of Pool, there will be an exhibition match between Grady and a (unknown at this time) local player. Grady was inducted into the One Pocket Hall of Fame in 2004 “For his outstanding contribution to the Legacy of the Game of One Pocket”. As a tournament player, Grady topped very tough fields to win four major One Pocket tournaments: 1983 Red’s Open One Pocket 1984 Sid Mann’s World One Pocket 1985 Red’s Open One Pocket 1995 Olathe, KS Legends of One Pocket Well known for his after hours play, Grady has faced virtually every major One Pocket player of his time, entertaining sweaters and doing quite well at the table for nearly forty years. As a promoter he has brought fans of the game a staggering twenty different One Pocket tournaments spanning nearly twenty years, including his gold standard, Legends of One Pocket. As a teacher Grady has: Given exhibitions and clinics featuring One Pocket all over the US; Given countless individual lessons - many featuring One Pocket; Produced eleven instructional videos on the game, written dozens of articles and two books which feature One Pocket and provided expert commentary for many One Pocket matches on video, ESPN and The Billiard Channel.

Death of a Prince Fred Mali

I was once told by a buddy of my Dad’s that the worst part of growing old was that when you checked the “Obits” to see if you were on it you found all your friends and the longer you lasted the fewer were left. When Gunzel Whitey passed away only two of his friends were at this old hustler’s funeral, my Dad and me. I am sure that was not the case with Fred Mali. I didn’t make it to Fred’s funeral in New York but I am sure that there were plenty of his friends there. Fred was in the center of this industry and New York society. He had the pleasant demeanor that made you feel like he wanted to be your friend and that he had a true desire to make you feel comfortable and equal. Very few of us could claim to be an equal to Fred Mali. He was very wealthy but you never knew it. He was a genius but could communicate on every level of his peers. He was the center of New York Society but never mentioned it. His passing will be felt by those he called friend, by this industry and by me. I am beginning to feel like Whitey all of my old friends in the industry are gone. Willie Mosconi, Jimmy Caras, Art Schmidt, Steve Mizerak, Dorthy and Jimmy Wise, Ron Maidment, H.G. Larson, and Lou

Dunis to name a few. So far I have built over 3000 Pool tables met Millions of people many of whom I called friend, but I wonder if any one will be there for me. Will any one remember 10 minutes after I am gone? Freddy Had that way to make you remember and on February 1 of this year we lost him but he will never be forgotten. I first met Fred Mali at the Jack Tar hotel in San Francisco for the BBIA Trade show in 1965. Patty Schmit who was a beautiful young chick at that time introduced us and we became good friends. I had been buying cloth from him and spoken to him on the phone many times but seeing him in person was a thrill. In the 42years that have gone by so quickly I have had the pleasure of seeing and talking with him a many trade shows and at his office in New York; spending many hours on the phone picking his brain and having him buy my dinner. He never let me pick up the check. When he began making cues I was his first customer. There was never a question if there was a warrantee problem. I once sold a Rosewood cue to a woman as a Christmas present for her husband. She returned it a year later and the butt was broke in two. I sent it back to the Mali company and Fred called

to apologize and the new cue was sent next day air no charge. Several years later I built a swim pool for that family and Rodney Schonborne a giant of a man with a very Petite woman asked why I had replaced the cue that she had broken over his head just to get his attention. I told Fred about it the next time we got together and he doubled over with laughter. I once told Fred that I was looking for a lathe to repair cues and shortly after that a huge crate arrived. Fred personally went to the Junkyard bought an old lathe bed rebuilt it himself and sent it to

me without a bill. He later told me it was the only one he ever remade. Unfortunately It was destroyed in the great Sheehan’s Pool World fire in 1976. I never met Mrs Mali but another of Fred’s friends, Ivan Lee with the Simonis Co. related that she was a Russian Princess Sobasky. It seems only that they should wed for Fred Mali was a Prince of a man who will be sorely missed. --- Pat Sheehan

Since opening New Year’s Eve 2006, Studio 704 has become the hottest spot in Vancouver, Washington. Rick Lycksell, the club’s owner, took time out from his busy schedule to take me through his club. He has a spacious 10,000 square feet to cater to the sports bar enthusiasts (first floor) and the nightclubers (second floor). The first floor has a full bar with four 7' pool tables, and two dart boards. Rick offers a full menu serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The bar has a great area with a black and white checkerboard floor that offers a small dance floor with a DJ on the weekends and Karaoke, Thursday nights. The DJ’s spin a mix of music from the 70’s, 80’s, top 40, techno, and R & B, from behind a candy painted ‘61 Impala converted into the booth. There is also a small lounge area on the first floor along with 2 projection screen TV’s and five 32" TV’s throughout. Studio 704 is under the very capable management of Tori Schade, whose warm inviting smile will welcome you in. For the pool players, Don “Coyote” Walker will be the tournament director for the Saturday afternoon weekly tournaments which will be a B & Below 8-Ball starting at 4 pm with a $5 entry and the House will MATCH the pot. (The 4pm time may change to an earlier time in the future.) Now, as you climb the stairs that wrap around to the second floor, you enter onto the huge hardwood dance floor. This is the area for live entertainment. Bands play Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. There are two full bars and ample seating to enjoy the music. If you’re in the mood for a little private time, you can reserve the VIP room where you will have your own bartender, VIP bar, a dedicated server, gourment snacks and bottle service.

Saturday, Februrary 24th Jake’s Bar & Grill in Salem hosted an 8-ball tournament for women only. The race was to 3 for an open player and to 5 for a master player. This was an exceptionally tough field with forty women including 5 master players. We started play at 10am and finished at 11pm. There were women from Eugene to the south and as far north at Longview, WA. The format was double elimination with an entry fee of $10 Jake’s added $320 for a total pot of $720. The tournament went smoothly with no problems. Well the Flu season has struck in Sacramento and a lot of the players including me got the bug. Most of the afflicted got over it within 7 days. Some weren’t so lucky. It took me 10 days to fully recoup and I missed my favorite weekend of the month. Lucky for Hard Times, Ken Shuman (National Head Referee for the BCA) filled in for me and ran a flawless tournament. Thanks Ken. The One Pocket event had 33 players with a $960 pot for the prize fund. Billy Palmer and Tony Billy Palmer Melindez ended up splitting the top two spots because of the late time and a waiting list that was itching to pay the retail time for tables. The 9 Ball event had 42 players and $1350 in the pot for prize money. It had been a long time since Chris MacDonald had finished first in this event and he did it with a tough mach against local player Jeff Gregory. Our weekly Line tournament has become very popular. The format is to seed all the players by skill, With the top players on table number 1 and lower ranked players on tables 2, 3, 4 and on down to table 16, where the lowest skilled players compete. If you win a match on table 5 your next match is on table 4. If you lose the match on table 5 your next match is on table 6. This tournament has a time limit. 21/2 hour. Everyone plays one game (8 ball one week 9 ball the next) and report their win. When all the matches have completed, a new round starts. There can be as many as 15 rounds of 9 ball and whoever has the most wins get 1st place. Ties will split. If two players tie for the most amounts of wins, they will split 1st and 2nd place money. It there are 8 places to be paid out, and 8 people tie for the most wins, they all split the entire pot. The Matrix system is available, factory-installed with any pool table in Global’s extensive line of models. Retrofit kits can be installed in one hour or less and require no routing or cutting of the cabinet, because the unit fits precisely into the slot designed for the coin mechanism. Kits include all components required to upgrade traditional tables and are compatible with most major brands, said Scott Gramstrup. A blinking LCD display shows player-selectable options for rack, time or tournament modes. The use of a single LCD backlight tube conserves battery power. Operators can program the logic board simply and conveniently with four buttons: up, down, enter and clear. Play pricing is fully operator-programmable in 25-cent increments; time pricing may be adjusted in one-minute increments. The Matrix features an ICT bill validator that accepts quarters and $1, $5, $10, $20 bills, integrated with an Imonex roll-down coin acceptor. The weekly calendar and real time clock allow operators to set a standard playprice and three special pricing structures per day, seven days a week. Operators may also set three daily free play periods. A countdown digital clock display enables players to enjoy Speed Pool. Free play for league nights, and hours, may be programmed precisely for the appropriate period. A non-resettable electronic game counter is standard. The Matrix can draw power either from an AC plug-in or from the 12V sealed lead acid battery. The operator or location owner need only plug an extension cord into the bottom of the table overnight and the system is fully recharged by the next day. The Matrix will operate from three to five weeks on a single fully charged battery. It includes a filter that ignores random discharges and identifies a specific pulse for the coin mechanism, price option button and other inputs. See ad page 35. WPBA Announces Two New Venues; Improved Televised Coverage After several years in Albuquerque, N.M., the Women’s Professional Billiard Association will be holding its U.S. Open in Lincoln, Rhode Island. A new convention space is currently being added to Lincoln Park and when the WPBA arrives, it will only be four months old and ready for world-class billiard action. The second new venue will replace Peoria, Ill., where the Midwest Classic has been held. It will now be held at the Riverwind Casino located just outside of Oklahoma City. According to WPBA President Linda Chen, “This region of the country has a strong billiard community and the WPBA is excited about building a tradition in Oklahoma.” Chen reported in her January/February letter that the most significant change for the upcoming 2007 season will be how players and events “unfold on television.” All televised events in 2007 will be produced by Winnercomm, America’s largest independent sports production, program development, marketing services and sales representation company. Winnercomm supplies over 1,500 hours of programming annually to ESPN and 13 other national television networks, and has earned 13 Emmy Awards.

drilling the holes for the #6 pockets. One of the tips of his drill came right through the top of the rail, and cut the pocket openings with an axe. We do have our work cut out for us on that one. We started on the rails and filled the pocket holes with glass resin filled with glass shards, cut the ends of the rail to get a square edge and glued on solid Rosewood pieces to match the grain. We then redrilled the holes to 7/8" and inserted brass sleeves. To solve the problem with the short rails we had to put on new setting strips, and patch in the worn places in the veneer. The corners on the legs are opening and the frame could use some help. We will cut the slate at a 45degree and put in the old wood block shaped correctly as that age table would have had. We removed them and reglued the parts ran them through the jointer to smooth the surfaces and make them flat. We do have an 8" long bed jointer so that was easy. We then resurfaced them with 1/8 “ Cherry ply witch is equal to the triple band system that Brunswick used. The legs will take 40 man hours but will be as good as new. We are still in the learning mode and are always open to the next suggestion or lesson to learn. Next month we will keep you posted on our progress. month Straight Pool tournament was held at Sam’s Billiards February 11, adjusting for the grand opening of the upstairs at Sam’s on the first Sunday of February. Despite the shift in schedule, 15 players participated, including Wayne Milke, Scott Robinson, and Greg Lawyer from Goldendale, Washington. In one group Wayne

beat Sam Rabito; Sam beat Bob Zack, but Bob still advanced to the finals on points. In another group Bill Bradford beat Rick Levine; Rick beat Rob Plaisance; but Rob beat Bill and advanced to finals on points. In the finals Paul Lamar and Willie Gin fell to Bob Zack, who finished with a run of 44 on his last turn at the table to take first place and the high run prize. The final results were as follows: 1st $70 Bob Zack 2nd $50 Willie Gin 3rd $35 Paul Lemar 4th $20 Rob Plaisance High Run: 44 - Bob Zack Next month we’re back on track with the first Sunday of the month, March 4.
