with like interests, propose questions, take polls, post instructions and philosophical ideas about our sport. There are plans in the works for special categories for upcoming events where players at those events can go online and post information, stories, personal experiences and share it with the world. It is a unique way to communicate with people who were unable to attend this event to see what went on, who won, who lost, who wasn’t there and who was. Watch for the upcoming Western BCA category. Talk to other pool players from across the country from your home office or livingroom. After the first week’s launch of the Billiard Nation Forum we had over 150 members and over 350 posts virtually by word of mouth. Log on and just take a look around as a guest. Click on a category, read the threads and what else was posted. Read what other players think, say and some of what they have done. PAUL POTIER CAPTURES THE FREEZE

March 2008

Playing The Ghost By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

Email Questions to: jewett@sfbilliards.com harada@sfbilliards.com mejia@sfbilliards.com

San Francisco Billiard Academy www.sfbilliards.com In my November column, I briefly mentioned the idea of playing against “The Ghost.” The basic idea is that you are playing some game, such as nine ball, and if you miss, it is considered a win for your opponent Bob Jewett because The Ghost never misses. This is a good game for solo practice and can also be modified for a good competitive exercise. Nine ball ghost is usually played by breaking and then taking ball in hand. If you run out, it’s a point for you, but if you miss, it’s a point for The Ghost. You can play to a particular score, such as a race to 5. We need to cover some other situations that might come up. If you scratch on the break, you still get to shoot but anything you made spots up. If you make the nine early, you win, even if it was on the break or a combination from the one ball. Since you don’t really have an opponent, let’s say that all fouls count including touching object balls by accident. Sooner or later you will need to learn to be careful at the table, and this is a good place to start. Playing The Ghost will improve your offensive skills but do nothing for your safety play. One way to add a Pool Tournaments defensive part to the game is to Mon & Wed 9-Ball at 8PM allow one safety per rack. If you Sun 8-Ball at 8PM Entries $5 + $3 green fee make a good safe, take ball in hand again. You can set your own Poker Tournament standard for a good safe, but I Tuesdays at 6:30PM

Latitude 84

propose that it should not allow any direct hit or one-rail kick that’s less than 4 diamonds long. You may also want to reject any safe that allows an easy jump shot for the hit. In the diagram are some examples of what I consider good and bad safes. The one ball by the right side pocket is a good safe because although it is not far from the cue ball, the pocket helps block a kick. For one-on-one competition, you can score each rack in a way similar to APA nine ball. Each ball is worth one point and the nine ball is worth two points for a possible 10 points per rack. You are allowed to spot any nine made early if you want but don’t get to count it, so that a nine ball made on the break or hung in the pocket doesn’t destroy your chance for a 10 in the rack. In challenge matches, we usually play ten racks each, and we allow one rebreak per set for those breaks where everything just rolls to bad spots. In my September 2004 column — all the columns are available on the OTBN web site — there is a description of a form of ghost for eight ball and nine ball that you can modify to make easier by removing balls. Some feel that a so-called A player should be able to beat the ghost, but this depends a lot on the conditions. I’ve seen tough tables where The Ghost would have the edge over Efren and Earl. Try playing races to five and keep track of your scores. This will give you some idea of your own chances of running out from a typical position. Here’s a hint on nine-ball strategy: if you can only run out one in 30 racks when playing the standard ghost, consider riding the nine ball when shooting at the one.

by: Pat Sheehan See ad page 10

I’m Back Sorry for being out of touch for the past few Pat Sheehan months, but life is not always a bowl of cherries and I have been sifting through the pits for a while. The good news is that I am back. Thanx for all of you who have called missing the few gems that once in a while I have been able to share with you. And I hope that I can continue to do just that. March 17 of this year marks my 70th year on the planet and May will be my 60th year playing at working on billiard tables. You notice that I use billiard as the adjective (it kind of bugs me that one of our fine magazines is called Billiards Digest) When I did my stint on talk radio 1010 AM The VOICE, the first person who called was Mort Luby and he explained that in the switch from Billiard Digest and Bowling Review to What was to be Billiard Digest he had asked several people to submit art work for the first issue and the one that was chosen had used the incorrect title and it went unnoticed. After that one hit the billiard world it was too late to change. Just remember Billiards is a noun as we play Billiards on a Billiard Table. I have never covered a Billiard table with felt. People have always made the comment “Are you-re felting the table?“ and the only thing that raises my hackles more is rubbing my finger nails across the slate. I have seen people go to the fabric store and buy felt to cover their table and it lasts about a week, since it is just a pressed fabric and has no strength and it will not work on card tables. I have been impressed with the new fabrics from Mali and Imperial. Both companies have very fine cloths and they are available in a Teflon stain protection. The Eliminator is fastest, toughest, best playing billiard cloth I have ever put on a table. The colors are very true and stay brilliant. Eliminator is a 100% wool worsted stain protected weave and plays so smooth and quick that it makes the wimpiest stroke look like a pro’s. Mali makes several grades of improved fabrics. Hydra, available in a 75 % 25% woven woolen style, is a very close shear and is pressed to give a fine play surface yet is very easy to install. It is very much like the old Brunswick Brunsco # 1 that we used for the 5x10 carom tables before 1970. If you get it with the Teflon bath and pressed it plays quicker but is a little tougher to install. Mali’s Vestra is 100% wool worsted and is available with or without Teflon. Since both companies are wholesale only you will have to check through a dealer or I will be glad to send samples. If you are interested they sent me lots of samples that I will be glad to share. Give me a call on my cell 503313-8646 and we will have a chance to meet and discuss them. I am always happy to answer any question on any subject as long as it is related to Billiards. February 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, 2008 Alexander’s Sports Bar Phoenix, Arizona The 3rd Annual Arizona Desert Dust-Off 10Ball tournament. The tournament had $5000.00 added that was sponsored by Chuck Bobbitt of Visual Impressions. The field was limited to (96) players and drew (91) from many different states as well as Canada. The format called for a race to nine on the winner’s side and a race to eight on Stan Tourangeau the one-loss side. The tournament was double elimination and was played on seven Diamond 7' Smart tables. The entry fee was $100 per player and along with the entries, added money, and side pots, the payout kitty quickly grew to over $16,000. Any player that entered the tournament and participated in all the side pots looked at an astounding first place payout of $4,260.00. The total entry fee (with side pots) was only $170.00. Play started at 5pm on Friday. The entire first round was played and completed by the end of Friday night with all players returning on Saturday at 9am. After play was complete on Saturday, the field had been reduced to twenty-four players. Returning on Sunday “in the cash”, and still on the winners side were, Jeff Pranke, Oscar Dominquez, Ron Allen, Gus Briseno, Jimmy Mendoza, Mike Pankoff, Fred Boggs, Brandon Butler, Bernado Chavez, Ernesto Dominquez, Nathan Smith, Ben Hrabina, Tres Kane, Stan Tourangeau, Tyson Cole, and Jeff Heath. Returning on the one loss side and also “in the cash”, were Bobby Emmons, Trick Sixty, Walter Glass, Chuck Evans, Nick Kruger, Rudy Fred Boggs Alameda, Dennis Orender, and Carl Wilson. As both sides of the bracket narrowed on the last day, the final eight in the tournament, and still alive for the big payday, were Gus Briseno, Fred Boggs, Stan Tourangeau, and Ben Hrabina on the winners side, and Oscar Dominquez, Jimmy Mendoza, Nick Kruger, and Carl Wilson on the oneloss side. In the next round, Fred Boggs defeated Gus Briseno and Stan Tourangeau defeated Ben Hrabina. The winner’s side was now down to two. Stan Tourangeau and Fred Boggs had positioned themselves to play for the hot seat. Back over on the one-loss side, Oscar Dominguez and Nick Kruger both lost and had to settle for 7th/8th place. Mendoza and Wilson advanced leaving them both still in the hunt. The next one-loss side round pitted

Mendoza against Hrabina and Briseno against Wilson. Mendoza and Briseno both won and advanced to play each other. Ben Hrabina and Carl Wilson tied for 5th/6th. The next round was the hot seat match and the loser gets 4th match. In the loser gets fourth match, Briseno defeated Mendoza, hill/hill, leaving Mendoza with a fourth place finish. The hot seat match between Tourangeau and Boggs also went hill/hill, with Boggs earning the hot seat and a spot in the finals. Briseno and Tourangeau then played, with the winner advancing to the one set race to (13) finals against Boggs and, just like many of the others, this match also went hill/hill with Tourangeau winning the case game and a spot in the finals. Gus Briseno had to settle for third place. In the finals, Boggs won the first game and Stan the next seven before Boggs stopped Stan’s run with his second win. Stan then won the next game to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Boggs, however, came back, winning 9 of the next 13 games making the score 12-11 Tourangeau. The match and tournament then ended when Tourangeau won the next and final game. Congratulations to Stan Tourangeau. Alexander’s, in Phoenix, had when they ran that tournament in January for all players rated eight and under, Alexanders held the exact same tournament on February 9th & 10th. Once again, the players came out in force. Fifty players showed for the February edition. The format called for a race to the player’s full handicap, with winner break and loser rack. The tournament was double elimination. Saturdays play consisted of playing the bracket to reduce the field to twelve players. These twelve returned on Sunday and were all in the cash. Returning on Sunday, on Tom Auston the winners side, were Jeff Pranke, Tom Auston, Steve Stowers, and Cody Grannis. Returning on Sunday with one loss were Joe Masi, Bernie Store, Donald Mangahas, Rick Cosman, Hopell Ampongan, Tom Farr, Mackay Alpert, and “Movin Marvin” Valdez. Losing their first match on Sunday, on the one-loss side, were Bernie, Donald, Hopell, and Mackay. These four players were forced to settle for 9th-12th. Over on the winner’s side Pranke defeated Grannis while Auston defeated Stowers. These wins set up the hot seat match between Jeff Pranke and Tom Auston. Jeff won the hot seat and a spot in the finals when he defeated Tom eight games to four. Back on the one-loss side Masi defeated Cosman while Valdez defeated Farr. Farr and Cosman settled for a 7/8 place finish. The fifty player field was now down to six players with Steve Stowers playing Joe Masi and Marvin Valdez playing Cody Grannis. Pranke sat in the hot seat and Auston waited for his opponent for the one-loss side final match. Valdez and Stowers both won leaving Masi and Grannis tied for 5/6. Steve Stowers then defeated Marvin Valdez that left Marvin with a very respectable 4th place finish. The one-loss side finals were next pitting Stowers against Tom Auston. The loser of this match would finish third while the winner would advance to the finals against Jeff Pranke. Also at stake was a chance to continue on for a shot at the $1,520 first place prize money! Stowers got his chance when he defeated Tom leaving Tom with a third place finish. In the first and only set of the finals, with both players racing to eight games, the match was real close all the way to the end. With Steve Stowers battling Jeff Pranke game for game, the score after twelve games stood 66. Jeff then won the next two games to close Steve out and capture the

PORTLAND, OREGON Considering it was Superbowl Sunday, there was a pretty good turnout at Sam’s Billiards February 3 for the monthly 14.1 Tournament. Sixteen players played some topnotch pool. Bob Zack was back and in fine form. He marched through the tournament undefeated again, ratcheting up runs of 33, 42, and 56! The 56-ball run was in the first match of the finals against Art May, who only had one Bob Zack shot at the table, and that was a safe. Bob’s ran 42 in his final match against Todd Gooch, who made his first appearance at Sam’s for a straight pool tournament. Todd had a run of 32 in an earlier match, but didn’t get many opportunities against Bob. David Randell had a run of 27 but didn’t make the finals. Sam Rabito beat David 50 to 4 but Sam also didn’t make the finals, losing to Bill Enger from Seattle. Art May was the only finalist from last month ending up in the finals again this month. The final results were as follows: 1st $70 Bob Zack 2nd $55 Todd Gooch 3rd $40 Bill Enger 4th $20 Art May High Run: 56 - Bob Zack The next monthly Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’s Billiards will be March 2, 2008. Banking And Kicking Systems: Are They Any Good?

I once had a student who told me that she wanted me to teach her a system for banking that would pocket the ball 100% of the time. After I explained to her that no such system existed (to my knowledge, anyway), she gave me a skeptical look, thanked me for my time, and then went on her merry way, again in search of her elusive dream system.

But it was that incident that got me started thinking about banking and kicking “systems” and their values, or perhaps even lack of values, in terms of learning how to play precision pool. Roger Long

Let’s look first at a typical banking system. The books will tell you to first pick a point on the rail that is directly opposite the object ball, and then imagine a line from that point to the center of the intended pocket, and then imagine another line from the object ball to the center of the opposing pocket, and then imagine yet another line running perpendicular from the point of where the first two lines intersect over to the rail, and where that line contacts the rail will be the point where you aim the object ball. Now let’s look at a typical diamond system for kicking. This system involves assigning numerical values for each of the diamonds and pockets along the long rail to be contacted first, and then assigning a different set of numerical values for each of the diamonds and pockets on the opposing long rail, and then assigning a numerical value for the cue ball origin, and then applying the formula C - F =T, whereas C is the Cue Ball Origin, and F is the First Rail of Contact, and T is the Third Rail of Contact. Therefore, the number of the cue ball origin, minus the number contacted on the first rail, will tell you the number that will be contacted on the third rail. SAY WHAT? Now I don’t know about you, but that all just seems to be a little too cumbersome for me. What’s wrong with the Equal Angles system? You know, it’s that system that old-timers call “Angle In/Angle Out” meaning that whatever angle a ball goes into a rail, it will rebound out at the same angle; or at least pretty close to it whenever it is rolling naturally. Given that piece of simple knowledge, it is rather easy to predict fairly closely the path a ball will take when banking off of multiple rails around the table. But whatever system you use for finding the angles for your banks and kicks, the important thing to keep in mind is that NO system is perfect. There are too many variables such as ball speed, spin, cushion elasticity, cloth speed, friction factors, and others that can affect the actual angle that will be experienced on each shot. So remember, systems are just to get you in the ball park. They are not precise guiding devices.

Get To The Root Samm Diep © February 2008 Over time, it is not uncommon to develop unwanted kinks in our mechanics. It happens to all of us. Maybe we picked up some bad habits from watching a teammate or perhaps we wore some uncomfortable shoes that unknowingly altered our stance. Whatever the case may be, if we’re in tune with our own body, chances are we’ll recognize it. We just need to fix it now. If you’ve ever made any mechanical changes to your game, you know it’s not easy. It takes countless hours of missed shots to develop the new muscle Samm Diep memory. And as difficult as that may be, it may be even more difficult to identify the root of the problem. If you have an illness, it’s easy to take measures to feel better, but if you’re not curing the illness, you might feel better but you’re still not healthy. For instance, a player who incessantly twists his cue on his final follow through is more often than not compensating for another mechanical mishap. If his alignment is off or he’s holding on too tightly to his cue, it’s natural to need a slight twist at the end to follow through straightly. However, the twist caused by too firm of a grip could all just be an indirect result to the grip hand being too far back on the cue or some excess shoulder movement. In this case, simply not twisting in the final follow through would not have solved anything. Here’s another example: A player has developed excess movement with each warm-up stroke. Her head bobs slightly up and down as her cue moves leading to a slight hop-up in her final follow through. The obvious solution would be to simply minimize the movement. “Stay down” right? In the case of this player, the excess movement is due to her entire body being too low and too close to the cue ball. This was inhibiting her from a free-flowing, smooth stroke. Her own body was getting in the way. She had no choice but to move up/down with her cue strokes. Raising her head slightly and moving her entire body away from the cue ball naturally encouraged a more fluid stroke with less head movement. It may take some time to get to the root of the problem. It may require several band-aid solutions before you realize the cause. Be in tune with your body. Your body will let you know if something doesn’t feel right. Don’t force it. Your stance and stroke should feel comfortable and relaxed at all times. If not, then maybe it’s time to start figuring out what’s causing the tension. Of course, seeking professional guidance always helps. All the mirrors and video cameras in the world do not take the place of the knowledge and experience a professional instructor can share with you. A good instructor has seen so many variations of strokes and player builds that they can help you find something that will work for you. In the end, there’s only so much you can fix without addressing the root problem. Don’t just feel better. Get healthy. PLEASE BE SURE TO VISIT POOLTIPJAR.COM. Danny Quince and Christie Loehding had to come back and win two matches from the team that put them in the loser’s bracket to win McQ’s Valentine’s Day mixed scotch-doubles tournament. Mick was a fantastic and giving friend to so many of us at the Sands and will be missed tremendously. Her contribution to the Sands was enormous and while we will find a replacement for her position, there will never be another Mick. So long dear friend, rest in peace. -- from the Sands Regency Staff We have worked with Mick on many occassions promoting the Sands Regency Hotel and Casino's Reno Open events. She took great pride in her work and was always on top of things and a pleasure to work with. We will miss her. JOHNNY’S SWAN-EE SONG

HOLLYWOOD, CA The 12th Annual Jay Swanson Memorial Tournament was hosted by Hollywood Billiards February 9-10, 2008. There was a stellar turn out for this tournament with a 181 player field. The field was comprised of local favorites and pro players alike. In the end it was Johnny Archer who came away with the first place prize money of $2,800. In the hot seat match Archer faced Dave Hemmah, who he sent to the one loss side in an 8-6 victory. There Hemmah faced Scott Frost. Frost started out in control of the match at 5-1 but faltered and that was all the break that Hemmah needed to win 6 straight games and the match 7-5. This set up the finals, a rematch, between Johnny Archer and Dave Hemmah. The finals was a single race to 11. The match started out with little difference in the score but Archer caught a gear and finished the match 11-7. Archer had gone undefeated throughout the tournament. Johnny Archer The prize fund had $3500 added by Jeff Bey owner of Hollywood Billiards, $1000 added by Eric Peterson (Fat Boy) and $70 added by Jude Hammond which made the total prize fund a whopping 49 $13,620. Jeff would like to thank all the players who participated, the patrons and supporters. He said, “There was a great turnout and a great field with a high level of play. We are looking forward to holding more tournaments in the future, so watch for upcoming dates.”

NEW OWNERS AT SHARKY’S By Matt Hiatt Recently I sat down with the new owner of Sharky’s to find out exactly what his plans were for his new adventure. Rumor had it that Chet was putting up some serious added money for some tournaments that haven’t been getting a real big response. I wanted to see if this was true or not, since my work had been keeping me out of the tournament circuit for a couple months. Much to my liking as a pool player, the rumors were true, adding $15 a player on a $20 entry was more than I had heard of in a long time. “I am willing to do anything to get the players in here to play...within reason of course” Chet expressed as I asked him how he felt about sponsoring our in-house APA Masters division this spring session. A generous donation of half the cost of the winners trip to Las Vegas in August for the one or two spots we have available to us. For those of us that participate in this event you know how big of a sponsor this really is. On top of the beer rounds, tshirts and the like, Chet is seriously willing to participate in sponsoring Salem pool players in our sport. The weekly tournaments are now on Monday and Thursday nights. Still an $8 entry, which includes greens fees. Start time is 7:30 for both. When asked about any changes he plans to make, besides the obviously better menu, he has already replaced the rails on all of the tables that required it, and is doing a great job keeping them felted. Smoke eaters have been serviced and many compliments have come from both pool players and general public on how much the smoke has been cut down. Chet also took on the task of remodeling the restrooms, and is in the works of resolving the seating issue for large tournaments that the BCA and APA hold. If you haven’t made it down for our new tournaments you should. It’s not just about the added money but the service has far exceeded that of the past owners. Come on in, play the tournaments and see for yourself. As always they are taking sign ups for the spring session as well as a Saturday afternoon 1-pocket league. APA Triple Play a.k.a. Masters started in February but there may still be room for more teams depending when you read this.

Sheehan

- continued from page 8

As soon as I was able to win my fight with pneumonia I made a trip to Medford to visit John Walker and complete his 4 1/2 x 9 Pool table that I had re veneered with Brazilian Rosewood , tightened pockets, new cushions and Pockets. I spent the night at John and Gee Gee’s house and finished the table in the morning. It was a very strange table to level since the frame on the Newport is very stiff and the carpet very spongy. John’s Room was featured in Billiards Digest and is outstanding. The house looks out over the Rogue valley and is beautifully landscaped and has several ponds that feature Koi. In the few moments that John isn’t playing pool he sells tropical fish all over the world. You have seen John in many copies of this news paper. He is a very accomplished player and always finishes well in the Southern Oregon tournaments. On tables built over 100 years ago, you would think that gravity would have pulled the frame down in the center. This Newport was high in the center and took only a few play cards to even the slate seems. As always when I start to set the slate I pull the screws in the end slate down first. Using a 6ft straight edge I check for the over all flatness of the surface. I was within .oo5". I went all around the table with the Machinist level and it read right between the lines after adding the required shims. I finished fastening the rail cloth, bondod the seems and sanded them an hour later I checked the level again and the table changed by two marks; and re adjusted. When I started the table took 1/8” on one leg at the head end and 1/4” under both legs at the foot. The frame is so stiff that one of the legs at the foot end was in the air and slowly began to settle. John had commented that the rolls were very strange as the balls approached the pockets and sure enough they had sanded the pockets back 4" to make the by the game play much quicker and I had filled smoothed out the entry with bondo. So I assumed that was the cause of the funny rolls and as soon as we assembled the table John tried the slow roll shots. The balls rolled away from the rail at the foot end but the level showed it had settled again and the balls were defying the laws of nature and rolling up hill. On the other side of the table the ball rolled into the rail, but far more than the bubble showed. I climbed under the table and part of the slate frame was missing. A piece of 3/4 in and a wedge was all it took to bring the low side up to correspond with the rest of the table. Tightening the screws in the foot end pulled the slate down in the corner and it was only in the first 1/8 in of that slate. In calling John, he says the table is still playing well and he and his friends are happy with all the changes. People ask me how long does it take to fix a table and my answer is from the time I start until I am satisfied it is the best that can be done. .On that job with the drive time it took 40 hours. Right now I am finishing the re veneer and rebuild of a set of rails to a Newport in the Carolinas. I have lots of old piano keys for new sights and the owner is re veneering the legs and frame. Rebuilding a set of rails and aprons that go to Arizona and working on direction for installing cushions and cloth that are clear enough for the average person could follow. See you next month any question 503-313-8546

Clubs and Sticks Team trio wins Lincoln City 8-ball regional warm-up tournament By David Teller

Clubs and Sticks defeated McQ’s Qs twice to win the Lincoln City 8-ball regional warm-up tournament held at McQ’s in Spokane, Wash. The three-man teams are based the McQ’s inhouse BCA leagues, which normally consists of four players and a substitute. The teams in the tournament must have at least two BCA league members per team. Ten teams competed in the tournament. Dan Glynn, Ken Trambitas and Lon Widner make-up the team Clubs and Sticks. They wrestled the win away from McQ’s Qs 9-8 in the match for the driver’s seat. On the B-side of the tournament bracket, McQ’s Qs (John Marshall, Duane Baumgarner and Jake Flugal) won their next match comfortably 9-6, ending the four-match win streak of Notthozguyz’s, (Bill Nelson, Chuck hood and Jasoné Defilippis) who lost their first match and came up through the loser’s bracket to get in the money. Their loss to McQ’s Qs gave Notthozguyz’s a third place finish. Back in the Championship match Clubs and Sticks Rolled to a 9-6 win over McQ’s Qs to take the tournament. Nice Rack (Alicia Kvasnicka, Patty Rabel and Sandi Fisher) and Short Shots (Sharon Bledsoe, Kathy Schierman and Sammy Samatos) were the only two all-female teams competing, but neither team advanced in the tournament. The double-elimination tournament was played Feb. 24. The tournament organized by Brian Kvasnicka and directed by Nita Saddler. Winning a race to nine advanced a team in both brackets. It was played by BCA rules on seven-and-a-foot Shelti tables with Red-Circle cue balls. Entry fee was $30. The total purse was $400. McQ’s is located at 9614 E. Sprague, Spokane Valley, WA. For questions about future tournaments call Nita Saddler at (509) 891-8357. Prize Money Pay-out 1st $200 Clubs and Sticks 2nd $125 McQ’s Qs 3rd $75 Notthozguyz

Family’s $1,000-added BCA 8-ball league - $1,000 added by National Pool League. Players earn eligibility for BCA Championships in Las Vegas and Oregon. This season’s championship match saw Dead Stroke winning eleven of the first sixteen games to cinch a victory over Screw U2. Even though it appears to be a decisive win, Dead Stroke’s winning margin in the second and third rounds was only three balls. It was Dead Stroke’s 34-11 fourth round score that sealed the match, and they will get the tallest trophies. The NPL will pay their entry fee in Las Vegas if they choose to go. Congratulations to captain Rich Lingbaoan and his teammates, Emilyn Callado, Billy Hart, Colin Mazaika, Chadd Taylor, Torre Taylor, and Patty West. Third place trophies go to the Hit Men, who were behind Tim’s Team all night but came through with a 40-24 final round to win the match by eight balls. 2nd place - Screw U2: Captain Mary Rakin, Piper Anselmo, Jude Bautista, Elmer Diwa, Ernesto Reyes, Glenn Saoit 3rd place - Hit Men: Captain Yoon Sim, Lawrence Ai, Alvin Jang, Anand Krishnan, David Lew, Gene Miller AWARDS PARTY: Thanks to Family Billiards for the free table time and pizza, chicken and veggies! Along with trophies for our top three teams, special acknowledgment was given to Colin Mazaika and Mary Rakin. Colin’s 951 average and .909 winning percent are both the highest ever recorded in my BCA leagues dating back to Spring 1992. Mary Rakin has won BCA Junior 9-ball championships on two continents, most recently last summer when she won her second trophy in Sydney, Australia. BEST EVER: Colin Mazaika took home $50 for his .909 winning percent and another fifty for his 14-game winning streak. In week eight he was stopped going for number fifteen, losing 10-6 to Yoon Sim. He then won 23 of the next 24 games, losing 10-7 to Mary Rakin in the middle of that streak. He had another 14-game streak going when John Rexroat broke and ran a rack against him in week 18. He finished out the season winning 13 of 15 games, losing only to Ernesto Reyes and Bill Lee and finishing with a 50-5 record. In the playoffs he won all eight games he played. We might never see a better performance in this league. MOST IMPROVED: Alden Huen, finishing his twelfth season with us, got this plaque and $50 award AGAIN, raising his average 17.5 percent from 584 to 686. Close behind Alden were Anand Krishnan (15.9%) and Clem Lau (13.7%). SUPER RING GAME: Darrel Haslip had the good fortune to accept the task of making a $100 ball that was sitting on the lip of the corner pocket. This, we could call Living Right. He was the 32nd shooter. Ernesto Reyes had the best run, eight balls for a $40 take-home. John Logan made five balls, and Billy Hart and Yoon Sim each made four. Glenn Saoit made two balls and picked up the one-pound box of peanut brittle. And, even with 27 players the first five shooters got a second chance in our seasonal 30ball marathon. Enjoy that coffee mug, Darrel.

event location with plenty of space was the most favorably remarked upon aspect of the entire tournament. Also for the first time, a free 802.11b/g Wi-Fi Hotspot with full, free, wireless internet access and WPA-2/TKIP security, was made available for the entire three days and we intend to make this available during future tournaments. The extra tables also enabled us to run a $5 “Warm-Up,” Race-to-2, 8-Ball tournament for a full sheet of 32 players on Friday night in under 4-1/2 hours. Additionally, something we had never before been able to do, we ran a $10 “Last Chance” 8-Ball tournament for all players whose teams were out of the money on Sunday. We played this on the open tables while the main tournament was finishing up. It was a Race-to-3 on the front, Race-to-2 on the back, and back to a Race-to-3 for all money matches. In the Main Tournament, 1st Place was captured by The Underdogs, an independent team from the Lynnwood/Bothell area of WA. Members of the vanquishing team included Scott Chandler, Scooter, Randy Martin, along with Michael “Rocky” Baird, who won the final game to clinch the tournament championship for The Underdogs. The Bald Spots/Players, representing the Skagit River Valley in WA, with Jim Davenport, Dan Hart, Hans Nendsa and Dave Linker, hung on for 2nd Place. 3rd Place went to Raul Abenojar, Eddie Mataya, Scott Thurston and Dannie Stewart, playing for City Lights of Tacoma. Into 4th Place slid TransGlobal Solutions of the Lower Mainland, British Columbia, with Gord Gervais,
