Story & photos by: Suzanne Smith Fifty-eight players from the WA, OR, and Canada descended on Malarkey’s Pool & Brew in Tacoma, WA on February 19-20 to compete at the 5th Annual February Freeze 9 Ball Tournament. The tournament was played on 10 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown I’s and the total purse for the event was $3970, including $1360 added by Malarkey’s owner Clark Smith. A full menu of excellent food and drink was available to players and morale was high as play kicked off on Saturday morning. Tournament format included double elimination, race to 7 on both sides, winner breaks, and 3 foul rule in effect. Tournament Director Andrea Saenz Maes ran a tight ship and made sure match times were available to the competitors throughout the event. Status quo performance through Saturday resulted in few unexpected eliminations. Stan Tourangeau of Vancouver B.C. exited the tournament on Saturday, however; even though he was not feeling well he still returned

on Sunday to support those still playing. Sixteen players returned on Sunday. On the A Side, Eddie M. v. Scott N., Eddie C. v. JD, Dumo v. Lance M., and Miguel M. v. Damian P. Eddie M., JD, Lance, and Miguel advanced through their morning matche. In the A side quarterfinal Eddie defeated JD 7-4 and Lance defeated Miguel 7-3 to advance to the hot seat match where Lance defeated Eddie 7-3. On the B Side, 8 players remained at the start of the morning. Only money matches remained: Robert C. v. Ryan P., Marc V.C. v. Dan L., Rich G. v. EZ W., and Dick T. v. Steve L. Robert, Marc, Rich, and Steve would advance through their first round of play on Sunday, and for 3 of the 4 their morning wins were followed by early afternoon wins as well. Robert, Marc, Rich, and Damian (who defeated Steve L. 7-2) would advance to compete against each other. Marc and Damian defeated their opponents 7-2 and 7-4 respectively. Fresh off their first losses, Miguel M. and JD could not stop Marc and Damian as they ended up defeating them 7-3 and 7-6 to face each other. Damian defeated Marc 7-5 and moved on to play Eddie M. The

Eddie Mataya winner of that match would earn a spot in the final against Lance Mason. Consistent stroke by Eddie and a few unforced errors by Damian resulted in Eddie M. defeating Damian 7-3 to earn a rematch against Lance. In this true double elimination format, Eddie would need to beat Lance twice. Lance Mason- Path to the Final: Andrea S.M. (3), Clark S. (3), LT (5), Dumo (1), Miguel M. (2), Eddie M. (3). Eddie Mataya- Path to the Final: Bye, Ed H. (5), Rich G. (4), Scott N. (4), JD (4), lost to Lance M. (3), Damian P. (3) Lance and Eddie lagged for the break and Eddie won. Early on both players made some unforced errors which resulted in a close match through the first four games. With the score tied at 2 games apiece, most spectators were settling in for what they expected to be a long battled final. However; in game 5 a rattled 9 ball by Eddie seemed to swing the momentum in Lance’s favor and he never looked back. Lance went on to win the next 4 games in a row to defeat Eddie 7-2. During

the final, Lance won all but one of the games on his own break, averaged 1.0 balls/break, only had to push once, and averaged 4.43 balls per runout to defeat Eddie. Lance played consistently great all weekend, his closest match was 7-5 against LT. Congratulations to the Snooker Player from Vancouver. 4 Player Teams

On Saturday and Sunday, February 19-20, 2011, the American Legion in Oak Harbor, WA, hosted its annual 4-Player Team, 8-Ball Tournament, awarding $3,275 in prize money. 14 teams (three less than last year, thanks to Malarkey’s in Tacoma scheduling a tournament for this same weekend), for a total of 56 players, showed up from the Snohomish, Kenmore, Everett, Mount Vernon, Burlington, Sedro-Woolley, Oak Harbor and Bellingham areas. As a reminder, our Annual 2-Man Partners 8-Ball Tournament is coming up on Saturday and Sunday, March 19-20, 2011. This year’s tournament format, by players’ vote, was set at “Winners Race to 9” and “Losers Race to 7,” instead of the originally-planned Race to 7&5, due to the smaller number of participants. It was also voted that the championship would be a Race to 9, with an additional Race to 9, if necessary, in the spirit of the true double elimination format. The tournament was played on 4 – 4x8 Valley bar boxes, all set up at the American Legion. The kitchen ran full-bore all day Saturday and Sunday. There was plenty of “sitting room” at the club for all of the players and all of the onlookers, as well as the club “regulars.” Once again, a free 802.11b/g Wi-Fi Hotspot with full, free, tightly secured wireless internet access was made available for the entire three days, and this will be made available during future tournaments. On Friday evening, February 19th, we held a $10 “Warm-Up,” Race-to-3&2, 8-Ball tournament, with 18 players participating. Additionally, this year, there was a $10 “Last Chance,” Race to 3&2, 8-Ball tournament for all players whose teams were out of the money on Sunday, February 20th, with 12 people showing up to play. In the Main Tournament, of the 26 matches played, all were strongly contended, with only two matches resulting in blow-outs. In one match, Korner Pocket Billiardz came all the way back from an 8-3 deficit to defeat the American Legion 1, 9-8, and progress to the point match. In several instances, one unexpected mistake resulted in the large-scale pivoting of the entire matches’ fortunes. This is a testimony to the high level of players’ abilities along with the nearly universal evenness of team match-ups throughout this tournament! The four teams in-the-money were brought back to play Sunday morning at 11 AM. Play was somewhat rapid and the Championship match got under way at a much earlier than expected 3 PM! The team coming up through the losers’ bracket won the first match. They took a 5-minute break while the table was cleaned. During this time, the two teams got together and decided that they wanted to SPLIT the money! So, like last year, we wound up with a 1st Place Tie, and the tournament concluded at about 5:30 PM. The team on the point was the Korner Pocket Billiardz of Snohomish, WA, whose members were Rick Amos, Cody Clark, Marvin Holmes

and Greg Odal. The challengers were the Soundview Bar & Grill of Everett, WA, consisting of Jim Conway, Ed Slade, Mark Impson and Dave Jones. 3rd Place went to Shooters of Sedro-Woolley, represented by Jim Meier, Phil Squires, Mike Lapp and Ben Dutton. Into 4th Place slid the American Legion 1 once again, with Chuck Hassler, Ben Hassler, Paul Purdy and Steve Holloway. Our deepest gratitude goes to Chuck Hassler, who organized the tournament, and to the staff at the American Legion, most of whom were volunteers, for their wonderful support. The staff’s attentiveness and high level of service was the most favorably commented upon aspect of the tournament venue. APA Civil W February 12 & 13th, Rodder’s and KC’s Midway hosted the APA Civil War XVI. We had 64 players—–32 from the North & 32 from the South. Randee Lee, APA League Operator of the surrounding five county Salem area had wild hopes of kicking some OPAL butt to tie the series up once again! Last year the North won and took over the series lead 8-7! The very first time ever in series history that OPAL-APA had ever led the series. For a whole two years now Merle & Boomer had enjoyed the view of Merle’s favorite “Hat Rack.” Sadly, now that view is gone! Rodders generously donated half the cost of the $640 Civil War T-Shirts, and KC’s Midway and OPAL kicked in the rest.. The total remainder resulted in a $2000 purse after the cost of the shirts were paid, and the field was paid out to the top 24 finishers which figured out to about 1/3 of those participating. All players received a commemorative Civil War shirt. The South gave to all the North players a fantabulous paper napkin with a bunch of western figurines glued on to it that also had the following wanna be poem to wit: “A voice “Boomed” from the North, “They’re just chicken—so troops go forth” Then Sheriff Randee Lee leading the way, her skilled posse rides in to save the day. Armed with a Cue Stick instead of a Gun, all had joined in to have some fun. With tips so hot that they’re smoking’ South’ll take the win and that’s no jokin’ No six shooters do we hold, Ours has 8 — watch you fold. Lightning fast is our d raw, call the ’Ref” he’s the law. Straight and true is our aim & you’ll be so sad that we came. North—Loser’s Prison is where you’ll be—Merle’s Hat Rack is comin’ home with Sherriff Lee !”

OPAL’s Boomer & Donna came up with a something too. OPAL gave the South a retaliation gift...which was a picture of a cowboy, a bunch of black iron metal filings, and a magnet so the South would play around and make cowboy facial hair on the picture of the cowboy! Oh and yes the following poem was pasted just above the cowboy’s hat to wit: “Out in the Wild, wild west—A yearly Battle ensues.—To determine which is the best— One’s gotta win; One’s gotta lose. The North leads the Battle which only seems fit—When looking for a Victor, the South ain’t it!” This time, we didn’t make good. Saturday’s play started right at 11 AM. We created two flights and split the field in half by using 11 tables down at KC’s Midway, and 15 tables up at Rodders. The Board was pre-drawn the night before by Randee & Boomer who made sure (By Luck of the Draw) that all the first round match-ups had a N/S opponent. Everyone just knew it was going to be a close battle. The format was double elimination. Whenever a North player played a Salem player a point would be won or lost. When South met South, or North met North, there could be no points won or lost--only pride and bragging rights. At the conclusion of Saturdays Play the South had accumulated a 36-27 lead. Resuming play on Sunday the South some ground, but in the end the final score was South 43 and the North 36. Merle’s prized Hat-Rack was headed south! (*&#(%!@ (&$ The final SL-7 match-up was between South’s (Salem) undefeated Luke Thomas and OPAL’s-Greg Sowder who had been thrown to the one loss side after fighting for the winner’s point. War XVI thriller win 5-3, over South’s Corky Kyle. Next, Greg took on South’s SL-3 David Blewett and 6-zipped him. In the next round, Greg 5-Zipped South’s SL-4 Eric Robertson, and then blasted South’s SL-7 Tavis Wagner in the 4th round. In round 5 Greg rolled over Salem’s SL-5 Scott Lewis 5-zip to move on to Sunday and face the only other undefeated left—Salem’s SL-7 Luke Thomas. That match included 5 table runs, and an 8-Ball break. Luke smacked Greg over to the one loss side with a 5-4 double hill win in just 8 total innings for the entire nine game match. In the one loss side Greg resumed his dominance with a 5-1 win over Salem’s Tavis Wagner to return and face Luke once again. Greg now would have to beat Luke twice in order to claim the title. Meanwhile Luke Thomas’s undefeated journey to the finals had started off by jumping OPAL’s SL-5 Stacy Enriquez 5-1, then in round two he barely squeaked out a win in a double hill thriller over OPAL’s SL-5 Garrick Mixon. Next Luke totally annihilated OPAL’s SL-4 Andy Tran 5-zip. In round four Luke got to clobber fellow South player Mat Hiatt 5-3. In round 5, Luke enjoyably got to send still another fellow Salem player to the back side when he got to upend Tracy Barrera 5-zip in order to move to the winner’s point where he managed a come from behind double hill win over Greg Sowder 5-4. Now all Luke could do was be patient and wait leisurely for an opponent. Finally Greg came crawling back out of the one loss side and the finals began. Greg had to win twice, or he was done. Greg wasted no time, he hit the hill by winning games 1, 2, 4, & 5. Down 5-1 Luke ran out two racks, but then broke dry and Gregory ran out. Match to Greg 5-3. Both players now had one loss and this was going to be it—the final’s final. In game one Greg broke dry and Luke ran out. In game two it was a safety fest with Greg tying it up 1-1. In game 3 Greg broke dry and Luke ran out. Match now 2-1 Luke. Luke also

took games 4 & 5 to put himself on the hill and then he broke and ran game 6 to claim the match and title of being the Civil War XVI champion, and all the bragging rights thereof. Plus, $390 for his efforts. This was the first year that the North had ever led in this 16 year series against the South. South, with this win has once again tied the series up 8—8. However, next year, Merle predicts that It’ll be Merle singing “I Shot the Sheriff” as he carries his hat rack back to its rightful home again. Special Thanks to Both Kraig & Carol Pauli and crew down at K C’s Midway, and to John & Cathy Johnson and their great crew at Rodders for their fine service, and for hosting what turned out to be a super great, and fun event. I’ve heard of using the diamond system when lining up for a kick shot, but I still struggle with consistently getting a good hit when having to kick at a ball. Do you have a “system” that you use?

Draw a line from the object ball to the rail and add the same amount of distance outward B. Draw a line to/from the outward point to the cue ball C. So, in kicking shots, if the cue ball and object ball are parallel then all you have to do is divide the distance in half. In the above example, I am showing you that the corner pocket to the center diamond goes to the side pocket and the same on the long rail. So as long as the object balls are parallel then all you need to do is divide the distance between the cue ball/object ball in half, aim, and stroke the cue ball with center and hit with medium speed. The Wagon Wheel System By: Bob Jewett

San Francisco Billiard Academy www.sfbilliards.com If you were around the Sacramento pool scene in the 1970s and 80s, you probably saw a distinguished gentlemen by the name of Ted Brown. He was one of the game’s greatest fans, a very good player and also the author of booklet on position play. The full title of the booklet is “Wagon Wheel System: Secrets of Fine Position Play” and it was published about 1990. In the introduction, Ted mentions that his inspiration came from a solo Bob Jewett game called “One-Pocket Points” in which you get a free smash break and then try to run as many balls as you can into one pocket. A miss or foul ends the try. Your score is the total number of balls pocketed in five racks. What Ted discovered with this game was that he had to perfect his position play, and in particular get to exactly the spot he needed rather than leave the cue ball in the general neighborhood of position. The tool he developed to help him progress is the subject of the booklet. In the diagram is an overview of the main idea. You set up an easy shot into the side pocket with position targets set up on the rails to give you very specific goals for position. For example, to pocket the 15 and have the cue ball just touch the 1 ball, you would set up for a nearly straight shot and hit the cue ball well above center. How “nearly straight?” That’s what the practice is for. How far above center? You’ve probably caught on that the answer will be found on the table. Since the cue ball is in hand for each shot, you can make things easy or hard for yourself. Try to do both. That is, at first find out where the cue ball needs to be to make each position play as easy as possible. For example, to get to the 1 ball you need a nearly straight shot, but if you are trying to go straight up the table to the 5 or 6 balls, a larger cut angle is preferred but not actually needed. Some details: Don’t cheat the side pocket; try to put the 15 straight into the middle of the side. There is no need for left or right english. You are not using the cushions, so there is nothing useful for the side spin to do. Work hard to just get the cue ball to the target position, so on a “good” shot, the cue ball will end up within one ball diameter of the target ball. Try the drill to both sides of the table. The advanced form of this drill is to place the cue ball at the limits of where the position is possible. For example, when going to the 5 or 6, try both nearly straight shots and very thin cuts. For the former, you will have more trouble getting exactly the right small amount of draw or follow on the cue ball, while for the thin cut, you will need to find the angle at which the both the cue ball and object ball barely reach their goals. In this part of the drill, it’s OK to cheat the pocket, but then you have to make the shot even harder. Master the Wagon Wheel and you’ll be on the road to success. Pool Players Memorial Jack Madden being last years champ had a target on his back and was sent to the B side by a young guy by the name of Wade Thompson who eventually took 3rd place. Jack told me he was gonna bare down and get his revenge on Thompson and sure enough he did in the semi’s. With Jeff Boucher sitting in the drivers seat that set up a replay of last years finals between Jeff and Jack. Jack pulled off some real crowd pleasers but Jeff had that cue ball on a string this year and there was no beating him! First place Jeff Boucher taking home $1100; second payed $800 to Jack Madden and third place netted $600 to Wade Thompson.

The Montana Pool Players Memorial has ended once again with stellar play, good times and the renewal of old friendships. Thanks go to Jeff and Sandra Windorski again for hosting this tournament at the Cattleman’s Casino here in Kalispell. They did everything they could to make us feel welcome and we all had a great time. I especially want to throw cudos in the direction of Kyle and Cheryl Burgess. The tables were great thanks to your long hours and extra efforts. Special brownie points go to Kevin Iverson, Ken Jarvis and Don Lundy for organizing and running things. 80 men and 23 women showed up to test their skills this year. I personally couldn’t believe the level of play I was privileged to see.

2011 Rally in the Valley by Cindy Chappell TAP League’s Rally in the Valley once again sold out with 144 teams breaking the record for the fastest sell out in the 15 year history of the tournament. Team 8 and the Magic Q’s will be representing TAP Las Vegas while competing from March 10-13 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Team 8 won their entry (along with their airfare and hotel stay) in the Annual Vegas Masters 8-Ball tournament in 2010. The original players were (left to right in the photo) Chris Adlawan, Gerald Branham (captain), Carlo Butto, Jeremy Head and Lucy Hernandez. The team added Reese Romney, Kelly Seeley and I to the roster to allow them additional strategic maneuverability during the tournament. Each year, TAP Las Vegas offers players the opportunity to join the Team 8 Magic Q’s team and compete. Grand Master Blaster

by: Paul Marquez I was attending a five man pool team event the other day. Team pool is my favorite. Scotch, three man, five man, any team competition. I wasn’t competing, I was just watching a friend play and I witnessed a poor call by a referee. It is too bad things like this happen.

At the higher levels pool referees are needed much less because Paul Marquez pool ambassadors make calls on themselves. Most all master level players do. The referee called a shot a push when it clearly was not. This inexperienced referee was not a master level player and in my opinion was the main reason why this call was misunderstood. My question is how can a non-master type of experienced player tell good or bad hits of difficult shots if they have not experienced hitting those shots hundreds of times? Pool takes experts to manage competitions correctly. Some who disagree may use the NBA or NFL to argue playing the game at a high level is a moot point and I understand some games are different than pool. My friend Pat Mowdy is regarded as the most respected referee amongst the players for the BCA and I feel it’s mostly because Pat is also a great player and has experience playing at a higher level. I have some questions about the new Grand Master criteria the BCA has created. Before you Western BCA voters for the Grandmaster event get overly defensive, I would like to begin this by saying I feel like all the players already invited deserve the

invite. You did ten gentlemen a deserving honor and as a fan of the event I must say we the people love it. I love it, it’s cool, fun and exciting. I feel like I must also say that for myself I truly feel like I do not deserve or should be considered to join this elite class. I’m okay with this. What I don’t understand is the vague criteria. What is the criteria? It is known that the team event cannot have two grandmasters play on a team together yet with some protesting may be allowed to play as a grandmaster for one tournament. Is that OK? Is it political? It’s confusing. What is the rule? Two or not? Be consistent. Now the invitees. Past champions? What about Brad Gowin who won twice, or Ivan Doty who dominated the master event. Rick Hodge was in three finals in a row and Pat Schumacher is without a doubt in my mind the best Oregon bar box player period. Damian Ponpanik was invited but turned down the invitation. Why? How does one get invited? Maybe you want the best players? John Morabito is pretty sporty, so is Kenny Dodd. I noticed only two Oregonians made the cut and I guess that could burn me but not as much as Timmy Tweedel or Eddie Carrido both from Washington not receiving an invite. I talked to my pool buddies that both write articles and are established pool ambassadors of the game and told them about my bother. They are bothered too. Many of us are. But they also feel like I should come up with a criteria before I complain about The Grandmaster selection process. Duly noted. Yet I’m uninspired to do so. You see, my complaint is not that I disagree with the criteria, my complaint is there is no criteria at all. And there should be. If so, what is it? The Lion Roars at Pagulayan Roars into 1st Place at Swanee Hot on the heels of his stellar performance at this year’s Derby City Classic, Alex “the Lion” Pagulayan continued his winning streak by taking first place at the 15th Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament. The event was held at the legendary Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California February 12-13th under the tournament direction of Mark Griffin, Sunny Griffin and Bill Stock of CueSports International (CSI). With the move to the Hard Times location, the event was live streamed for the first time by the rock and roll high tech team from TAR (www.theactionreport. com). The largest two day 9’ table event in the United States, the $4000 added tournament with 192 players on 28 tables is not for the faint of heart. It is a test of skill, concentration and stamina. The event celebrates the much loved Southern, CA player Jay Swanson, who passed away June 1996. He was known as “the Gentle Giant” who demonstrated all that the Swanee event still stands for today. The Swanee event has a history of a full field. However with CSI’s recently launched online registration function on its CueSports Tournament System (CTS) (www. ctsondemand.com), it was sold out for the first time the week before the tournament.

In addition to Pagulayan, the Swanee field was a literal who’s who of western U.S. players. Arizona monster Mitch Ellerman took second place. Ellerman won the event in 2009, then after a one year hiatus came back strong to narrowly lose in the finals 11-6 to Pagulayan.

Additional players included “Mad Max” Eberle. Eberle was shuttled to the loser’s side by Pagulayan in a nail biter quarter final match. With the score hill-hill Eberle dead hooked Pagulayan on the 5-Ball. It seemed Eberle pretty much had the match in the bag, but you never can count “the Lion” out. Imparting a little right spin, Pagulayan one-rail kicked in the 5 getting perfect on the 6 and calling it game, set and match.

Saturday February 20, 2011 KC ’s Midway in Oregon City, hosted the APA 8-Ball Jack ’n’ Jill Regional with Merle Directing, and Honest John officiating. The Midway staff were gracious hosts and provided everyone with outstanding service along with a fine food and beverage menu. 17 finalist pairs competed for 2 OPAL slots into the APA Jack ‘n’ Jill Nationals scheduled for April 2729 2011. For several weeks OPAL/ APA has been running regional tournament qualifiers to accumulate prize money and the 17 pairs for this competition. There were only two slots up for grabs into the nationals, and a total of $2,240 in the purse ($200 which went to pay their entry fees) $900 divided equally between the two eventual slot winners to go toward airfare / lodging, and the remaining $240 ($120 apiece) was paid to those two teams who placed 3/4th. The competition was pre drawn and set up in the office by the luck of the draw on a Modified Single Elimination board. That way the regional competition was able to get underway right after the player’s meeting without delay. In first round action, everyone had a “bye” except for Joe McCraw & Desi Oberman who slid by Eric Soumokil & Kathie Young. In the second round McCraw & Young got hit by Tim Higginson & Kristin Cambas; Larry Poe & Kerry Kitts hopped over Dee Petrich & Larry Gee; Morgan Taylor & April Ford got run over by Ian Miller & Rhonda Jacoby; James & Lori Warner beat Paul Roshak & Stevie Holquin; Rick Nagy & Heidi Puckett clobbered Erik Wickstrom & Kim Pugh; Don Palacios & Jen Haller got squashed by Larry Burnside & Stacy Enriquez; Steve Hestmark & Katrina Curtis got beat by Jason Knutson & Lisa Wagner, and

In the Winners side third round action it was Cambas & Higginson over Kitts & Poe; Jacoby & Miller over the Warners; Enriquez & Burnside over Puckett & Nagy; and the Duvals over Wagner & Knutson. In the final elimination round on the one loss side, and to move progressively back to the winner’s side again, Hestmark & Curtis put the ka-bosh to Soumokil & Young, Palacios & Haller seized the moment from Wickstrom & Pugh, The Taylor & Ford snuffed Roshak & Holquin, and McGraw & Oberman annihilated Gee & Petrich. In the semi-final round on the winner’s side it was Palacious & Haller overthrowing Higginson & Cambas; Miller & Jacoby tripping up Hestmark & Curtis; Enriquez & Burnside wiping the plate clean with McGraw & Oberman; and Taylor & Ford standing tall over the Duval’s. Now, it was down to the moment of truth in deciding who would be winning and going on to compete in the Las Vegas Nationals—– and who would be winning $120 and staying home. The first Final match-up was a race to 4 between combined SL 10 pair: Larry Burnside—who plays for River Road House’s “Missing Links” in the Mid Valley Double Jeopardy Division—and his partner—Stacy Enriquez—who captain’s the Wichita Town Pub team of “Kiss Kiss”—in the Southeast Double Jeopardy division—–Versus— Combined SL-9 pair Morgan Taylor & April Ford who both play for Wichita’s O.C. “Window Lickers” in the Southern Double Jeopardy division. Larry & Stacy took the match 4-2 to claim the victory, and to take the first of two slots to the Nationals in Las Vegas. The 2nd finals match up was between combined SL-10 pairs Ian Miller & Rhonda Jacoby who both play for Back Alley’s “8-9 Suited” in Vancouver’s Columbia Double Jeopardy division; and Don Palacios & Jennifer Haller. Don plays for The River Road House’s “Nutz-N-Butz” in the Mt.Hood Double Jeopardy division, and Rhonda plays for Rodder’s “Felt Up” in the Southern Double Jeopardy division. The match between the two pairs was much closer then the scores indicated as every game played was a close one. However, in the final analysis of the 4-4 race, it was the Ian & Rhonda duo who prevailed by a score of 4-1. So, booking the flight reservations to Las Vegas in anticipation for the APA Jack ‘n’ Jill National Championships at the Riviera will be Larry Burnside & Stacy Enriquez along with Ian Miller & Rhonda Jacoby. Valentine’s Day Mixed Scotch Doubles Tournament @ Malarkeys Pool and Brew… from: Andrea Saenz-Maes Another FREEZING weekend found itself at Malarkeys Pool and Brew in Tacoma Washington. Bringing some of the toughest tournament players of mixed teams together to battle it out to the end. 27 teams hailing from Oregon to Canada found themselves playing in one of the best scotch doubles tournaments of the year! Starting at 10 in the morning, some of the best teams were playing very tough matches early in the tournament. It was a race to 6 on both sides of the board. Playing by BCA rules and no coaching, made tough times for some.

All and all it was coming down to the breaks. Whoever could break the balls the best with a good spread and make a ball, was going to win the game. With the caliber of players that were playing, running the rack was key. Not a lot of safety play was seen. Winding down to the last part of the tournament it, on the top of the A side was Stan Tourangeau/Kimberly Kirk vs Marc Vidal/Samm Vidal. On the bottom of the board was Eddie Mataya/Cindy Sliva playing Eddie Carrido/Sue Orr to have opportunity to play for the point. Overcoming very tough teams, Eddie Mataya/ Cindy Sliva vs Marc Vidal/Samm Vidal to battle for the point. The match was back and forth there for the first couple of games but, Eddies monster break seem to have the advantage in the match. Making 2-3 balls consistently on the break with a great spread, they managed to get out of some pretty hairy racks. In the end, winning the point match.

In Memory Of (Obituary from Myers Mortuary) Layton – Rick John, 62, slipped thru our hands on Feb. 20, 2011 at Davis Hospital from a sudden, unexpected heart attack. Rick was born on Jan. 30, 1949 a son of Betty Josephine Harris and Norman Earl John. He was the youngest of three siblings, an older brother Charles John and deceased sister, Colleen Crane. He grew up in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, shortly after the family moved to Ogden, Utah. Rick attended Central Jr. High and Ogden High School. He dropped out in his sophomore year to work at a gas station and played pool on the side. Rick John was a very gifted and talented individual. He began playing pool at 14 years old. By age 16 he became one of the top players in the state of Utah. He traveled the road hustling from town to town making his living. He told intriguing stories about the old time hustlers. In 1982 he won back to back major tournaments in Las Vegas. Rick always invested his money in real estate. Rick worked hard at managing his properties, becoming a successful landlord. Rick was a member of Oakridge Country Club and worked very diligently at his golf game. He enjoyed playing with his friends there. He married three times, first to Gayle Minkevitch in 1968; Cindy Whittaker in 1994 and Coleen Spicer in 2002. Rick is survived by his wife Coleen; brother, Charles (Valerie) John; two sons, Justin (Julie) John and Richard (Katie) Prescott; godson, LJ Wardley; three stepchildren, Adrian, Andrea, Jimmy and six grandchildren. Rick was a great person, he never knew a stranger. He was full of love and life. We will never be able to find another Rick John. He was loved by everyone.

Rick was more than just a Master pool player, teammate, friend and husband, he was a very good man. While the pool world has lost one of it’s all time greats, the rest of the world has lost more than that. Rick was a generous man who would do anything for family and friends, he was gracious and kind to everyone he would meet. We can’t replace someone like Rick, we can only hope to continue in a manner that respects and honors him, and what he meant to us. Rick will be missed by all.

from Janet Neitzel: Rick was a wonderful guy, always had a joke to share or a story about hustlers back in the day. He would make phone calls and 90% of the time use some goofy voice instead of his own...the messages if you didn’t pick up were priceless. I have been around pool for many years and its not many that are “never” talked about in a bad way, he was one of them. ALways respectful to others, always a gentleman, always seeing the glass half full. He leaves behind a wife that shared his passion for pool, Coleen. Together they have promoted pool in the UT area for several years. Tricky aka Rick loved the game and wanted nothing more than to please everyone when he had his tournaments. Coleen was the thinker of the tournaments..I can’t even tell you how many times I heard this from Coleen on a tournament weekend “now Rick”..I smile just thinking about it. Together they worked hard to bring pool back to Utah on a higher level. Rick wasn’t one to just send out flyers for his tournament...he called everyone and when I say everyone, I mean everyone. He didn’t like technology such as social networking, email etc. that the rest of us have all resorted to in order to spread the word. His profile on facebook has no picture, mainly because he didn’t know how to put one there. Rick also had a passion for golf. I didn’t know his golf friends but I am sure that they would all share in my feelings of Rick. RIP “Tricky” Rick John

Lucky: The Road no one knew him Lucky asked to borrow my cue, and they lagged for break. The kid ended a foot from the end rail, with Lucky trailing about 6 inches behind. Lucky racked. Only a few people were in the room -- the kid, his girlfriend, Lucky, myself, a couple guys breaking down some of the tables and two casino gamblers who had wandered into the room out of curiosity. The kid had no crowd to incite as before. This was one on one. I won’t go into all the painful details, but basically Lucky played a classic “keeping close” on this kid. He strung him along like a puppet until the score crept up to hill-7, the kid’s favor. All the games Lucky won he made look like he was nothing but lucky, slopping in balls all over the place, or getting lucky hooks. Both the kid and his girlfriend were chain-smoking despite the “No Smoking” signs posted all over the room. Lucky said something about the smoking once, but they just ignored him, so he said nothing more. I saw in Lucky’s eyes that the cost of that bit of rudeness had just gone way up. Lucky broke, made nothing, scratched his head and growled, “Damn! I can’t even make a ball on the break.” Lucky’s breaks were looking suspiciously like one he had shown me the very first time we played – where he plays the one safe. But the kid didn’t roll out. He shot, made two balls, and in his first real mistake of the set, hooked himself. What a fluke, I thought. He took a flyer and missed. Easy out. Lucky won the set. The kid slapped down the grand and said Lucky was just lucky. They played again. Lucky broke every rack and made nothing but left a hook on the one ball. The kid kicked or rolled out every game. Lucky seem to win the games not by running out but by seemingly slopping balls in. Lucky was soon on the hill, 8-0, and couldn’t resist saying, “Hope I can make a ball for once.” Crack! The nine went straight into the left corner pocket. Game, set. The kid was squirming now. “Lucky bastard,” he muttered. Lucky was up two grand. Now the kid wanted to play for $2,000. “This is the only set I was ever skunked in since I was thirteen,” he snorted. Lucky told the kid, “I’ll tell you what I’ll do. We’ll play my $2,000 against your $1,000 on the set, but if I win 9-0 again you pay me $3,000. And I break first.” The kid groused about giving up the first break, but it was only an act. Knowing Lucky had only made a ball on the break once in two sets, and got lucky on just about everything else, he wasn’t too worried about it. I know the kid thought Lucky was just plain stupid.

Lucky broke and guess what -- finally made a ball. He ran out -- in fact, Lucky ran out the next seven games and just for the fun of it missed making a ball on the last break but once again left the kid hooked. The kid was more than eager to save his remaining cash. He took another flyer but he missed, and Lucky cleaned the table. The kid had disbelief written all over his face. He had no entourage to back him up this time. He was angry he threw the bills on the table and walked away with his girl in tow, Lucky said with feigned surprise in his gargled old voice, “What, you’re quitting?” What exquisite torture…… Just then Chris Byers walked in. In his usual good humor, he asked, “What’s been happening around here?” As I sat down with Chris, I noticed Lucky, who had returned my cue to me, slipping out of the room. So I relayed the recent events at the table, enjoying the recount almost as much as the performance itself. Chris was intrigued. “So that was Lucky? Wish I could play him. You should have gotten a hold of me so I could come and watched and learn something.” I told him he had to keep it quiet and couldn’t tell anybody, and he agreed. Maybe some day they would play. Later, in my room, I sat with my feet up on the window ledge and looked out at the sky for awhile, just thinking back over the last few days. Reno had many great matches and tons of action sorry to see it end. I did savor the punishment given the smart-aleck/cocky kid, and looking forward to watching more praiseworthy matches Lucky would find on the road ahead. I thought especially now that I was able to put some of Lucky’s teachings to use. I might even face up a to a challenge or two myself on this trip. That still might not be for me to decide. Lucky does know best. I do have to decide what to do with this moment in time that I have with Lucky. After breakfast we’re headed out to another stop, and I’ve called ahead and made hotel reservations for us. The place was famous for its food. I’m looking forward to a good, hot dinner there tonight. Lucky has taken over the wheel for awhile, so I’ve some time to catch up on writing my story and starting an e-book, and now the next chapter remains to be played out, with the only thing ahead of us at the moment the painted highway lines the truck we were following and the disappearing in a wobble under the car…….

Paul Ward and Madalina Moreno of Sandpoint, Idaho, didn’t let a competitor’s pending childbirth distract them from coming back and winning two matches from the team that put them in the loser’s bracket to take the Valentines Day mixed scotch-doubles tournament at Black Diamond Billiards and Eatery in Spokane, Wash. on Feb. 12. Ward and Moreno hit a stumbling block when they lost 3-2 to Chuck Watkins and Nita Joy of Spokane, Wash., in the match for the driver’s seat. In the loser’s bracket, Ward and Moreno had their hands full as Tony Echatory of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, and a nine-months pregnant Amber Foster of Post Falls, Idaho, rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie things up at 2-2. The effort fell short as Ward and Moreno won 3-2. Echatory and Foster, who almost didn’t make it to the tournament, settled for third place. Event co-organizer Brian Kvasnicka said Foster did not enter the tournament until an hour before it started because she was uncertain whether she would be in labor before the tournament started. Not feeling any contractions, Foster put on a comfortable pair of slippers, pulled her hair up in a tail and made the best of the tournament despite her swollen feet and having to give up some reach over the tables. “I just waddle around a lot,” Foster said. Coming out of the losers’ bracket, Ward and Moreno went right after Watkins and Joy but were plagued by several missed shots and bad leads. Ward and Moreno looked like they might have fallen asleep in their rematch as Watkins and Joy grabbed two quick matches. Ward and Moreno got their momentum back and took the next two matches to win 3-2. In the rubber match, Watkins and Joy cooled off as Ward and Moreno continued to heat up. Ward pocketed two consecutive kick shots in the first game as he and Moreno wrestled the first game away and never looked back taking advantage of crucial missed shots and coasted to a 3-0 win. Event organizers were Brian and Alicia Kvasnicka. The tournament was played by Billiard Congress of America rules on 7-foot Shelti tables with Red-Circle cue balls and an alternating break. Entry fee was $25, with $200 added. The total purse for this tournament was $700. The race was to three on both the winner’s side and the loser’s bracket. The next event at Black Diamond is an open 9-Ball tournament scheduled for March 26 and 27. The race is to seven on the winner’s bracket and to five on the loser’s bracket. When the disqualifying matches end in a payout, the loser’s bracket matches are a race to seven. The tournament will be played by Texas Express rules. “Cascade Pool League players swarmed to Rodders Grub and Pub in Oregon City on Saturday, February 19 to celebrate their annual 8-Ball Awards Bash. Fantastic host and owner John Johnson was on hand to present countless giveaway items, the most coveted being a mini-fridge, brand new bar stools, and many other nice gifts for the players. Among other giveaways and raffled items: a 3x7 cue case, won by Dan Stoltz, a Palmer cue, won by Tom Griffin, and a Tony Counts custommade cue, donated to the Bash in the memory of Frankie Tuckett by Andrew John Johnson Monstis, won by none other than Tony himself. MVP and 13 years Perfect Rodder’s Owner This year an MVP ring game was held, with John Lewis coming out on top of the Attendance: Chris Nall pile. Mini-tournaments were held throughout the day, including some for just the women. The tried and true Survivor game made its annual appearance, and once again, proved to be very popular. There never seems to be enough time in the day to hold all the events everyone wants to enjoy! Joyce Phipps and John Lewis took the most honors this year. They were League Top Guns and Top MVP’s with the highest stats and most feats earned overall. Ironman 5 (Ray Cunningham, Dave Bowlby, Tony Dunlap, Steve Copher and Gene Copher) from Don’s Dugout Wednesdays proved to be the top team of the season. Chris Nall was recognized not only for making MVP, but for his 13 years of perfect attendance with Cascade Pool League. That is quite a feat in itself. Bryan Lum is not far behind with 9 years, followed by Carl Doerr with 7. Several players earned their 6-year Perfect Attendance jackets this year: Dave Black, Bob Barney, Harold Gilman, Steve Marker and Rich Zumwalt. Ironman 5: Dave Bowlby, Tony Dunlap, Ray Cunningham, CPL had 56 teams playing in its 8-Ball session this year.
