Eleanor Callado Wins Again

Tiger West Coast Women’s Tour’s eight and final stop of the 2016 closed its season the weekend of Feb 11-12, 2017. Hard Times Billiards has been sponsoring the kick off and closing event for a few years now. Hard Times without a doubt is one of the best pool Halls located in Sacramento. It is a 31 table pool room with plenty of free spectator seating. The owner Karen Markulis has created an awesome pool environment, food is good, and the optimum equipment is even better. We had 31 players show up for the last event, every one was excited to have one more opportunity to earn points as this was the weekend when final points would be added and paid out to the players who had at least played 4 games. Eleanor Callado (7) would receive a bye and win matches against Cony Mendoza (6), and Rae Taylor (6). Olga Azarova (6) won matches against Alice Kim (6), Theresa Teague (6), and Khanh Ngo.

Revelina Um (7) would win matches against Ginger Bowen (6), Gigi Callejas (6), Shannon Mchone (7). Meadow has been part of Tiger West Coast Tour for a few years, however this was the first time of her competing and actually making it to top 8. She would defeat Emelyn Callado (7), Janna Sue (7), Olga Azarova who again makes top 8. Without a doubt Olga has shown tremendous consistency this year. Revelina Um would defeat Meadow who for the first time ever takes 3rd for $200 in a field of 31 tough opponents. Eleanor Callado, would sit on the winner seat and await for the sole survivor of the one loss side, Revelina Um who is a regular of top placings in the tour. She placed 2nd on the Kick off event, 9th-12th at the Broken Rack and Diamond Billiards, Modesto, and 2nd at Family billiards, San Francisco. Eleonore Callado would prevail the first and only race. Both players displayed great shot making, and cue ball control combined with excellent defense when needed. Out of 8 stops Eleanor won 3 stops (The Broken Rack-Emeryville, Diamond Billiards – Modesto, Hard Times-Sacramento), she took 2nd (Family Billiards) and 5th (Diamond Billiards – Fresno). Standings for the main event with 31 participants were: 1st $350 Eleanor Callado 2nd $200 Meadow Klingler 3rd $140 Olga Azarova 4nd $100 Shannon McHone 5/6 $100 Janna Sue Nelson 7/8 $65 Em Callado and Leslie Bernardi Standings for the second chance with 15 participants were: 1st $80 Khanh Ngo 2nd $50 Taylor Gem 3/4 $20 Stephanie Hefner and Naomi Manuel This final stop included the points payout to the players who played at least half of the stops. Also the lucky winner of the beautiful Tiger Case was Kirsten Karim. The leather case is valued at $500. 10 of our players were invited to participate in the North American Pool Tour (NAPT) Division II Championships held at one of our favorite sponsors, Hard Times Billiards in Sacramento, last February 23-26, 2017. The NAPT is comprised of tours just like the TWCWT from around the country. These are some of the other tours that participated: NWPA, OB TOUR, MLRT, JPNEWT, QUEBEC, OB TOUR, AWBT, NCPT It was great to see a previous member of the Tiger West Coast Committee Stephanie Hefner. She now represents the NWPA Tour.

The players who represented us were: Teresa Teague, Jessica Skye, Leslie Bernardi, Shawn Modelo, Knagh Nog, Ginger Bowen, Revelina Um, Janna Sue, Sher Ahola, and Rae Taylor. FEBRUARY 9-BALL & 10-BALL STEVE LINGELBACK Way back on February 4th we had the pleasure of hosting another Open 9 Ball tournament adding $700 to the prize money. 35 total entries consisting of 11 highly competent Masters, 15 confident A’s and 9 brave B players. That’s a good mix. Entry money was the only handicap at $6040-20 respectfully. So nearing the end there’s Mike Stevens, Paul Marquez, Chad B. “ tall guy” , Steve Lingelbach, Kenny Dodd and Randy Baker all converging on the boards. Go ahead. Shake em up, Guess how they line out. 1st thru 5th & 6th. The race was 7 front and back sides. Then on the 18th Kolby’s once again held an Open 10 Ball tournament following the same handicap entry as above. Race was a little shorter at 6 both sides. There were 32 total entries . 18 Masters, 7 A’s, and 7 B’s. We pitched in $700 and let the games begin. Now. Once again the following players converged at the

As we become better players, our habits deepen. We rely on those habits to help us do the same sequences of little things throughout our pre-shot and shooting routines, time after time. Once our physical habits are solidly in place, we can put our focus on strategy and winning. Well, maybe for a while… Pros in every sport continuously return to their fundamentals. Many of our troubles seem to arise from the gradual decay of our fundamentals. Whatever our old habits were, they tend to return. We often make little adjustments to our form, our equipment, or our routines, and we forget to consider how each change relates to the bigger picture of what we’re trying to accomplish. Further, we don’t always remember to notice whether the changes we made are actually helping. This came home to me recently when I made an equipment change and failed to notice the effects. I changed my contact lenses, optimizing them a bit more for distance, since I was hitting golf balls further than I could see (unfortunately, not because I’m a great golfer). Five or six weeks went by, and my pool game was way off. I hadn’t had a slump this long in many years. Then one day, I was hitting a pool shot and realized I was not seeing the balls clearly. I had been seeing them poorly ever since I changed the contacts, but I just hadn’t consciously noticed. I went back and got contacts optimized for pool distances, and immediately got my game back. The moral of the story is that we really do have to check ourselves out, especially when we’re in a slump. Something has changed somewhere, and change is not automatically for the better. In my case, and I suspect, for many of us, we’re often not seeing what we’re looking at. We’re running on habit and not bothering to really focus hard on what we’re doing. Let’s talk about how we use our vision in pool. We rely on our eyesight to judge distances, spatial

relationships, gaps, angles, and alignments. For most of these tasks, we have to make an effort. For example, to determine how close to straight-in a shot is, we have to put our body on the line through the balls, move our head side to side a little to get a 3D perspective, and perhaps bend down to get closer to the table surface. It takes more than a glance. If we get lazy and line up without making the necessary and appropriate effort, we may have time to consider the error of our ways while we’re in the chair hoping to get back to the table. Think about when you’re in the zone, playing your best. How are you seeing? What are you seeing? I’ll bet you’re using your eyes quite well, making the effort, bothering to focus, clearly and consciously seeing what you’re seeing. The difference is that when you’re in the zone, it doesn’t seem like effort. You’re totally focused and you simply do the right things. You’re fully in the moment, seeing, feeling, doing. On the other hand, I’m wagering that most of the time, most of us are not even fully focusing our eyes when we’re down on a shot. As we get older, it can take a couple of seconds to fully focus on the cueball and a couple more seconds to then bring the object ball into full focus. Even worse, I believe a good percentage of players “black out” during their hit stroke. They aren’t focused on the vital physical aspects of their game. Instead, they’re focused internally, on distractions such as fear of missing, selfconsciousness, trying to look good, and so on. What are you actually seeing during the hit moment? What are you aware of? Take some shots and see what you’re seeing. To be focused enough to consciously see during the hit, you have to be focused before the hit. And that’s what we’re really after. Getting out of whack might be a gradual process, but recovering from it doesn’t have to be. Put forth more effort. Focus. Give yourself a better chance. Lazy loses.

ONE MORE DELAYED DRAW SHOT STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

I have already covered in the past the “delayed draw shot”, which basically consists in a jump-draw using a “ramp ball”. Here is another example of this useful technique. Let’s start by placing the 1-ball (the yellow one on my diagram) frozen to the long rail at the 2nd diamond. Place another ball (the green one in the diagram) frozen to the 1-ball and even to it so that their line of centers is perpendicular to the long rail. Place an “obstacle ball”, in this case the red ball, right on the foot spot and the object ball (the blue one) by C-pocket. At last, place the cue ball frozen to the long rail at about half diamond from the 1-ball. Jack up your cue by about 20° and use either an open or a close bridge partly propped on the rail. Aim 2/3 of the 1-ball to the left and shoot with a 3-3.5 speed stroke. Most importantly, use a good and smooth follow-through and hit the cue ball at 5:30 (if you’d rather use the mirror image of the same shot, obviously, you’ll need to hit the CB at 6:30) using 2.5 tips of English. In this kind of shots, it is an absolute must to be able to hit the CB exactly where we need to, as shown in the diagram. However, it is indeed very easy to miscue because the more we jack up the butt of our cue, the more we tend to drop the tip when we deliver the final stroke. Again, we don’t need to elevate our cue by much as the CB is helped by the “ramp ball” (the 1-Ball) to jump higher and clear the green obstacle ball. If we succeed in applying F a good amount of draw, by the time the CB will land on the table, it will bounce a couple of times and then the spin will start grabbing, drawing it around the red ball and towards the blue object ball to then pocket it into C-pocket. For an easier version of this shot, in case you get too frustrated, move the obstacle red ball one diamond to the right (where I place the dotted pink ball) and keep in mind that the trendy stiff/no-deflection shafts don’t help in this kind of shots. 3 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 One of the best ways to practice your skills is by a general method I call Progressive Practice. The idea is to have a general kind of shot -- weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to work on follow shots as examples -- and to make P 5 3 the shot harder if you make the current attempt and easier if you miss it. This ensures that the shots you are working on are at the edge of your comfort zone. Area Area 1 The PP method also allows you to easily keep track 1+2 of your progress. 4,6 1 In the left shot in the diagram is the first level of follow shot. The goal is to make the ball in pocket P and to follow forward to leave the cue ball within a diamond of the end cushion (Area 1). If you do 1 2 3,7 that successfully, move the object ball farther back and try again but if you miss the shot or the cue ball placement, move the object ball closer to the pocket. The cue ball should be exactly a diamond from the object ball for all shots. You are free to adjust the 3 2 cue ball left-right as you choose. You should mark your present object ball position with a coin on the rail and be sure to move it after every shot to remember your current 4 1 difficulty level. The coin will automatically move to where you are about 50% on the shot. Do the drill for 10 or 15 shots and note where the coin is when you move it after the last shot.That position is your 4 5 score for the drill for that session. I recommend moving the coin half a diamond at a time so that you gradually get to shoot harder shots. You may want to move it a whole diamond until your first miss if you start from position 1. 5 6 Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the first-level follow drill, suitable for beginners and maybe intermediate players if they need a confidence builder. The second level is similar but the cue ball must end up in Area 2 7 which is just a diamond square. For this level you will have to be a lot more careful about the cue ball placement. The shot needs to be nearly straight but not perfectly straight as scratches are not allowed. The level 3 drill uses the same basic placement, but with a much smaller target. There are two ways REJ to play it. The first is that you have to scratch in pocket P following the object ball in. By now, you are probably wondering what a boy in a swimming pool has to do with learning how to play pool. Have you ever heard the story about the little boy that wanted to learn how to swim? His parents took him to the local swimming pool and enrolled him with an instructor. After a few weeks, he had learned the basics of swimming and could perform a few strokes. His parents cheered and clapped, but the boy thought that he could still do better. So he kept going to swimming classes and after a few more weeks, he was able to swim across the pool. As an instructor, I embrace the philosophy of Continuous Improvement (CI). Unlike other practice models, Continuous Improvement is not a one-time process. It is a powerful way of improving that focuses on the continual efforts

In K-12 education this process could be linked or referred to as response to intervention (RTI). As in K-12 education, the first thing you need to do is assess yourself. Initially, I want you to take a test (diagram your next 25 misses during match play) that will show you where some of your weakness areas lie. Not only do I want you to diagram the shot, but I also want you to diagram the overall layout of balls (what you are trying to get position on next). The shots I am referring to should be makeable at least a moderate percentage of the time. I don’t want you to spend time diagraming impossible shots. Look for patterns as to why you miss makeable shots and then practice each shot that you diagramed exactly 100 times. As you practice each shot, I want you to score yourself using the following scoring guide: Give yourself a “0” if you miss the shot. Give yourself a “1” if you pocket the ball but do not get position on your next shot. Give yourself a “2” if you pocket the ball and the cue ball is on the correct line for position but either “goes long” or “falls short” of the desirable position zone. Then give yourself a “3” if you pocket the ball and your cue ball falls into the correct position zone. Once you have completed the shot 100 times divide your total score by 3 and this will give you an overall success percentage for that particular shot. You can use this success percentage to monitor your improvement over time. A good player will go through this cycle several times, building on the success of each previous cycle. I recommend setting both short and long-term goals. Each is an essential part of the improvement process. If you initially scored a “55” your short-term goal might be to improve to 65 by the end of the month. Likewise, your long-term goal might be to be successful 95 percent of the time within 12 months. Always write your goals down. This makes you more accountable. Down deep, we’re all like that little boy who learned how to swim. We all have some basic skills, but let’s not stop there. Let’s go from basic skills to competent, from competent to good, from good to great, from great to expert, and from expert to world-class. Sometimes it is important to look out to the horizon, dream big dreams and find a way to make them into a reality.

The Andy Cloth Nubbins Memorial January ‘17 Pool Tournament that was held at Duke’s Bar & Grill in Saratoga, WY on January 27th & 28th saw Wyoming players from Rawlins, Saratoga, Evanston, Cheyenne, Rock Springs, Green River, Casper and Gillette tangle with a couple of tough players from the Colorado area in a battle of the Saratoga (an 8-ball & 10-ball hybrid game) title! The eventual champion Ricardo Martinez of Rawlins, WY played great all tournament and went undefeated to claim the crown and 1st place money! Tournament runner up honors went to Perry Gilbert of Casper, WY who had another strong shooting performance. The Tournament director, Monte Thayer, also from Rawlins, WY won four consecutive matches before losing to Martinez for the rocking chair and finished up in the 3rd place spot. Mack Pride of Ft. Collins, CO posted a 4-2 mark over the two day tournament and a 4th place finish. The 5th place tie spots went to EJ Glode of Saratoga, WY and Scott Adams of Evanston, WY. These tournaments will continue each month with $1,000 added to each tournament and only a $30 entry fee which is paid back to the players 100%. The fact that there are no green fees or quarters required and $49 per night motel rooms this tournament is certainly a must for all rocky mountain regional players or those just passing through the area! 9-BALL CHAMPION DERBY CITY CLASSIC â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 9-BALL Congratulations to Dennis Orcullo!! Article by: Phil Capelle on Facebook Photo by: Ricky Bryant - RB Promotions Dennis Orcullo finished off a 9 day long week of world class pool action by winning the 9-Ball Division over Shane Van Boening and, in the process, capturing the super prestigious Master of the Table award. He earned it with his win in the 9-Ball, a 3rd in the 1-Pocket, and an 11th place finish in Bank Pool. Orculloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s final match with Van Boening began inauspiciously when he hung a super easy combo on the 9. They split the next 2 games. Then, in game 4, the roof caved in for SVB. It started when he broke dry and Orcullo ran out. In game 5 Van Boening surprisingly missed an easy 8-ball and Orcullo won again. Van Boening missed again and Orcullo ran out again to take a 4-2 lead. It looked like Van Boening would surely run out game 7, but the ball skidded, he missed, and he lost again. In the following game Orcullo made a tough 2-9 combo and then broke and ran out to take a commanding lead of 7-2. In game 10 Van Boening missed twice, then left a shot on a kick and Orcullo ran out to reach the hill. In game 11 Orcullo missed position, played a poor safe, and Van Boening made the 9 for his third and last win. In the finale, Van Boening played a bad safe and Orcullo ran out.

After 8 games Greece’s Alex Kazakis had broken out to a 5-3 lead after winning 4 straight games. But Shaw stormed into the lead with a 4 game streak of his own to move ahead, 7-5. Kazakis won games 13 and 14 following a Shaw miss in each game. So, at this point, it looked like we were possibly heading for a double hill thriller. Wrong. In game 15 the players traded several kicks and safeties before Shaw finally got a shot and ran out. Then his break and run game shifted into high gear as he kept Kazakis in his seat while running 3 and out to capture the title, 11-7. He shot another .900, this time a .911 to be precise, while Kazakis shot a very respectable .838 – good, but not nearly good enough. 2017 George Fels Memorial Straight Pool Challenge Congratulations to Chris Melling! Article by: Phil Capelle on Facebook Chris Melling of England, who is not known for his straight pool, managed to lead all qualifiers for the single elimination event with a run of 225. He then beat Lo Li Wen and got a bye as Jayson Shaw did not have time to play to earn his spot in the finals. His opponent was Mika Immonen, who made the top 8 with a run of 146. He then beat Dennis Orcollo and got a bye because Darren Appleton also did not have time to play to earn his match with Melling. Immonen will be defending his title in the World Straight Pool later this year. Melling raced to a 57-12 lead before overcutting a break shot. The 2017 WPA World Artistic Pool Championship was held January 12 – 15 at the beautiful Bikini Square Convention Center in Xingcheng, China, overlooking the ocean. We had 27 players from all over the world, vying for 8 WPA World Artistic Pool Discipline Champion titles, 1 “overall” WPA World Artistic Pool Champion title, and much more. Luke Szywala from Krakow, Poland played Florian Kohler from France, in the semifinals winning 90-88. A lcaide is SPAIN’S DAVID ALCAIDE is the 2017 World Pool Masters champion as he beat Jayson Shaw in a thrilling final that went down to the final rack. The Malaga man, who now lives near Madrid, had beaten a slew of star names en route to ultimate victory – Ralf Souquet, Shane Van Boening, Albin Ouschan and finally Jayson Shaw.

Alcaide was so overcome with emotion at the end that he needed to leave the arena and compose himself before the trophy presentation by The Hon Steven Linares, the Gibraltarian Minister of Sport. The gutsy Spaniard picked up a $20,000 payday and more importantly joins a list all-time greats of the game who have held aloft this coveted trophy. The match itself was a thriller from start to finish. “This trophy is for my children,” said Alcaide. “Thank you to Matchroom for the invitation to the tournament and thank you to all of my fans. I hope to play here next year and defend the title.” Shaw had been gifted a free pass in Sunday afternoon’s quarter final when Alex Pagulayan missed the 9 ball with the score at hill-hill, and he took advantage to cruise past Chang Jung Lin in the semifinal. Alcaide overcame a shaky start against Albin Ouschan in his last four match to dominate the table and run out an 8-6 winner. As the final match unravelled, they shared the opening four racks before Shaw moved into a 4-2 lead in the race to eight encounter. Alcaide took the next and despite some nervous moments tied the match up in the eighth game. Shaw though missed the brown 7 down the rail to give his opponent a great chance to clear which he did

Shaw took the next running out, but Alcaide got back to the table in the twelfth game and made a great run out to bring a roar from his bank of fans. The 8 and the 9 were stuck together but his clever positional play allowed him to get behind the 8 ball and push it into the centre pocket. Alcaide made two balls on the break in the next but missed the 2 ball. With the balls out in the open, Shaw ran the table to regain the lead at 7-6. With chances to close the match out, Shaw made two misses and each time the cue ball rolled safe. The second time, Alcaide, with little option chose to make a very short range jump shot and his fans erupted as the 6 ball skidded into the middle pocket. He closed out the rack to make it hill-hill and with the break in his favour it was to win. A great break shot saw balls drop and with the table open, Alcaide composed himself for what must have been the most difficult run out of his lengthy career, and he made it to become the 16th different player in the 24-year history of the Masters to etch his name on the trophy. Alcaide said, “I didn’t play my best in the final, I missed two or three easy balls but there is a lot of pressure and I managed to get a bit of luck. I beat the best two players in the World, Shane and Jayson. The last 6 ball, the jump shot, that is my best shot. It was unbelievable; I don’t know how I made it.” For Shaw it was a disappointing ending; “I had two chances, I blew it. I didn’t deserve to win it after having two chances. I watched all his matches this week and he played well. He deserved to win. “I hadn’t played for a couple of weeks coming here. For the first couple of matches I was just trying to get in stroke but as the tournament went on I got better. I had chances but didn’t take them at the end – I was a little bit pumped, but that is the way it goes.” Earlier, Alcaide had overcome Albin Ouschan in a match that flowed two ways. First Ouschan won three in a row before Alcaide kept him rooted in his chair for six racks and he went onto win by two. Shaw had

an easier run as he beat Chang Jung Lin at a canter. 8-3 was the final score. Taking place in Gibraltar, the Masters sees 16 top international players competing in the shadow of the Rock of Gibraltar to determine the destination of the $20,000 top prize. The whole event is broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK & Ireland and on networks around the world. The Masters carries an $80,000 prize fund, and the event is broadcast live for 20 hours in total.

The popular memorial tournament, produced by CueSports International (CSI), is an annual tribute to Jay Swanson, a well-respected player in Southern California. But Dominguez was undeterred by the loss and continued his quest to the finals with wins over Morris, 7-5 and Ellerman, 7-4, before getting revenge against Bustamante in the semi-finals by a score of 7-5. In the final match, which was a single race to 11, Dominguez jumped to an early 5-2 lead. Then Parks began fighting his way back, tying the score at 5-5 and then pulling ahead of Dominguez by a game. The players then traded games back and forth with Parks reaching the hill first, with the score at 10-8. But the alternate break format allowed Dominguez to break and run, making the score 10-9, before Parks would get back at the table. Parks broke, made a ball and was faced with a difficult one–three combination into the corner pocket to start the rack. Parks made the combo, got perfect position on the one ball and ran out to earn the title of 2017 Swanee Champion and collect the $2,500 prize. Dominguez finished second and earned $1,500, while Bustamante received $900 for his third-place finish. The event was live-streamed for free on the CueSports International Facebook page.
