by Jean Bartholomew Having just returned from Chinook Winds Casino at Lincoln City on the beautiful Oregon Coast, I must say it was the most successful of all the tournaments thus far. This Western BCA Association has grown immensely in a short 10 years of existence. This Association limits their membership to the three states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Having started with just a few hundred members, it has now over 1800 in it s membership and with more than 900 members participated in this, the 7th Annual Regional 8-Ball Championships. The caliber of play was superb. The tournament was (continued on page 15)
Cue Rossman. Dr Cue showed up at the qualifier to give one of his world famous performances including the wing shot, instructed on the diamond pattern and banking and in general amazed the onlookers with his abilities. Dr Cue will be in the Washington area at Mustard Seed II in Bellevue on April 16th. He will also be appearing in Oregon at The Cue Ball in Salem, April 18th at 6:30 PM and the following day at the APA event at the Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City on the 19th at 8:00 PM. 10th Annual U.S. Bar Table Championships
Danny Medina
by: Jay Helfert The big guns were out in force for this year s rendition of the U.S. Bar Table Championships. Four days of fun, hot pool shooting, late night action and casino high rolling got everyone s juices flowing. 106 players teed it up in 9 Ball on Thursday and by Friday night we had a final four of Mark Haddad and Jose Parica on the winner s side and Stan Tourangeau and Kim
Davenport on the one loss side of the board. Mark Haddad is relatively unknown except on the left coast, where he is a force to be reckoned with in 9 Ball and One Pocket. Only a few people remember his runner-up finish to Johnny Archer several years back in the Houston Open. But Mark has made a mark in the last year with high finishes at the Sands and Hard Times. Mark reached the hot seat match with Parica via wins over Tyler Edey 95, Ralph Carr 9-4, Stan Tourangeau 9-4, Dave Martin 9-7 and Edwin Montal 9-5 (completely a Canadian trifecta). He then trounced Kim Davenport 9-1. This should have served as a warning to Jose, who was made the betting favorite by the sweaters and side betters. Jose had already left in his wake Duke Bayman 9-3, Dave Airehart 9-4, Jim Sullivan 9-1, Bernardo Chavez 9-5 and a rejuvenated Rich Geiler 98 in a terrific match. He then laid a 9-0 bomb on Ronnie Wiseman. The two hottest shooters then slugged it out with Haddad emerging on top of a 9-7 score. (see Medina Wins page 12)

Poolhall Junkies
The First Public Screening by: Herb Wilmot, Westar International
Highly entertaining , a fun movie , a good time , a lot of action . That s the consensus buzz about the up-coming pool movie Poolhall Junkies. On February 13th at the Darryl F. Zanuck Theater on the 20th Century Fox lot in Los Angeles, an invitation only crowd of about five hundred people arrived to see the first public screening of this much-anticipated film, many of whom were Hollywood and billiard industry professionals. Jim Chapman, President of Westar International, whose company (l to r) Mike Massey, Mars Callahan, Jim Chapman, Chris Corso, Robert LeBlanc is handling the promotion of the film throughout the billiard industry, was on hand making notes and taking photos both at the theater and afterwards at the party at The Atlantic. Associates or friends represented the four sponsors of the movie Olhausen Billiards, Westar International, Southwest Cues, and Washington State Championship Sardo Tight Rack. A high level of energy ran through the packed auditorium as Mars April 5-7, 2002 Callahan director, writer, actor took the stage prior to the curtain rising. Contact: System Amusement This is a dream come true for a lot of people 114 E Baldwin Spokane, WA 99207 in this movie , said Mars. He then reeled off a (509) 326-1551 list of names, of whom many would recognize in the movie and billiard world actors, agents, producers, executives, sponsors, promoters, etc. who have helped him along the way. But most importantly, his personal accolades about the support his friends and family have given him throughout the years, emotionally moved he and the audience the most. The movie is LUNCH DINNER FULL BAR dedicated to his late godfather, a writer, Phillip POOL DARTS PULL TABS Robert Dixon. In his closing comments, Mars pointed to a central figure in his life, my best THURSDAY 8 BALL TOURNAMENT - 7:30 PM friend in the world, who, I would not be alive 12801 NE 175th - Woodinville, WA today if he didn t grab me at nineteen years old (425) 488-0140 in a poolroom and teach me how to write my writing partner, my best friend Chris Corso. A standing ovation then erupted from the crowd. Then, the movie. Afterwards, the excitement. The comments covered nearly every aspect of a viewer s experience. It s fun to watch, said Robert Le Blanc, pool Technical Advisor for the film. Every guy that sees this movie will think, Thursday 5pm Tuesday 5pm Damn, I wish I was doing that in a poolroom . Dave Thomson of Medium Pool (an advertising POOL - BIG SCREEN TV agency in LA that works with billiard products FOOD - KEGS - DARTS and billiard players) commented thus: 1055 Sunset Blvd NE Renton, WA It made me laugh; it was funny and (425) 255-9213 entertaining . Mike Massey, World Champion pool trick-shot artist who played the role of St. Louie Louie in the film, added, There was some really good acting and the movie was fastPOOL POKER paced. I think everyone will like it. Donny KENO DARTS Olhausen of Olhausen Billiards who drove up from San Diego with his brother, Butch Olhausen, Mike Clark and an entourage Lunches: 11am - 9pm Happy Hour: 5pm - 7pm of others said, I liked it. I d like to see it again. So goes the mood and the attitude. Many Qualify Here for the MCMOA thought that this movie would appeal to a wide State 8-Ball Championships audience beyond the pool spectrum. Phil

Messina, a veteran writer and director of many theatrical and TV movies said, It s a mixed bag. Some people will like the movie just for its entertainment value. Thomson more specifically said, This movie has a very broad appeal. Also, it will definitely do well in the cult scene because you ve got two or three name actors in there. Christopher Walken is the chief cult factor. He s the biggest draw, I would think. Of the acting in general, everyone interviewed expressed praise. From the young actors in the film, all the way up to Chazz Palminteri and Rod Steiger, the comments ranged from favorable to amazing. Aside from Christopher Walken, who seemed to be everyone s favorite, drawing adjectives such as terrific and awesome and superb , it was Mars Callahan who garnered the most kudos. It s amazing what he did at such a young age writing, directing, acting, said Le Blanc. Jay Helfert, a well respected and long-time promoter of pool in the West, chimed in, I d like to see Mars and writer Chris Corso get some recognition because they did a good job . And Messina, Mars is an entertaining actor with a lot of potential. And Donny Olhausen, He did a fine job. Many people thought that the movie would be good for the pool industry if enough people saw it. It will certainly generate interest and increase sales, said Donny Olhausen. All the movie can possibly do is excite interest for pool, expanded Le Blanc. And without a single exception, everyone loved the ending. A play upon words and a hasty decision provided the thrill. Thomson, who first saw the script in 1992 said, It was funny watching the evolution of the script and see how it changed. I thought the ending was a nice little twist. But perhaps the most objective opinions came from a non-pool player who was totally unbiased, who has never even seen a pool movie and who regularly walks out of movies she doesn t like. Laurie Britton, a friend of Donny Olhausen, put it all together. I didn t expect to like it, so I was quite pleased that it was as good as it was. I stayed glued to it. It had a good story line. The acting was good. Mars was actually quite a good actor and I had never heard of him. And I was a bit surprised that it got me enthralled about pool in general. It made me actually want to learn how to play pool. I would like to see it again. Doesn t that say it all? The next big question remains the same: When will the film appear before the general public and where? The answer leans towards late summer of this year. Get ready! Watch for upcoming articles following the progress of Poolhall Junkies by Westar International, a billiard wholesale company based in Las Vegas and Seattle. 800 995-8605

Tweedell Takes Riverside Tournament by: Linda Carter
Tim Red Raider Tweedell came out on top in the Riverside Casino s All The Leprechaun s Gold St. Paddy s Day tournament. The tournament was held on March 16-17 and featured 25 players. An untimely snowfall and some problems at the Canadian border prevented some players from making it. Any way you looked at it though, the tourney was a glowing success for the first-time effort of the United Pool Players Association (UPPA). We would like to thank the sponsors of this event, the Riverside Casino, the Silver Dollar Casino, and King Cobra Billiards who added the full $1500. An unprecedented collaboration between casinos to further the sport of billiards was appreciated by all the players. The Silver Dollar helped sponsor the event, and even though they don t have any pool tables YET, they will be a MONSTER in the billiards industry in the months to come. Stay tuned to this publication and the King Cobra Billiards Corner for exciting updates. Thanks also to King Cobra Billiards for making Diamond Smart Tables available to the northwest. Tournament directors were Glen Hancock on Saturday and Linda Carter on Sunday. (Linda was at a WPBA event in Valley Forge, PA on Saturday.) The tourney featured a new format that you will be seeing from the UPPA 10-Ball, races to 13, with a 7-game lead knockout rule. This means if a player leads at anytime in the match by 7 games, it is an automatic win. There was also a multiple-win rule that allowed you to score several wins within the same game by pocketing the 10-ball early and re-spotting it. The 3-foul rule was in effect and any MISS was a ball-in-
hand penalty. This created some rock and roll pool, but it also required some strategy unseen in 9-Ball. The players loved this format with comments ranging from Kris Iverson saying he would never play in another 9-Ball tournament if there were 10-Ball tournaments at the same time, to John Doherty (JD) thanking us for making him think about the game of pool again. Many other players were required to think out of the box as well. Of the 25 players, over half were championship caliber, including Mike Zimmerman, Todd Marsh, Mike Vidas, Alan Ima, Frenchie, Rich Geiler, and the Monk, Warren Costanza. All eyes were on Dan Louie, pegging him to win from the beginning, as he KO ed his first 3 matches, winning over Jeff Jiminez 9-2, Creigh Dumo, and Rich Geiler, 7-0. Danny must have been trying to save quarters! By the way, some opposition to the tournament format came from players about the money needed to feed the tables . While there was no green fee, the tournament featured 6 Diamond 9-foot Smart Tables. The Smart Table is capable of being set to any amount per game or for any length of time, and was set for gold dollar coins at $2.00 per 15 minutes. Players split the gold coins. The total take of the tables after the tournament turned out to be just over $15/player. Between the multiple-win rule and the KO rule, players did not have to pay as much as they expected to. The only difference between paying a green fee is that the players who are out early pay for most of the games, while in the coin-operated format, the players who stay in the longest pay the most. But then they are also in the money. Our next tournament (Tweedell continued on page 22)

Taxing Situation April. The IRS is OUR FRIEND Yikes. I, personally, think we should all be able to claim everything related to our pool endeavors on our income tax. Think about it. Exemptions let s see. One for me. One for my wicked step-sister who occasionally takes over the table in the middle of one of my games. One for my mentally-challenged step-sister who also captures my cue long enough to completely confuse the issue, - never a really good visit, if you know what I mean. Then, of course, I cannot forget my very reclusive brilliant twin who can rarely be coaxed out. So, that is already 4 exemptions, and I am sure I MUST be forgetting someone. Medical bills hmm. Those not-to-be-enumerated spankings are sometimes severe. The toe-stubbings and choking incidents can certainly be problematic. Hyperventilating from close-calls is very hard on the body, lungs and cheeks (depending on how close the call is), and then there are the sore throats occasioned by periodic screaming at the cue ball to stop. And palm-flattened foreheads are very expensive to restore. I am not sure that teeth-gnashing and hair-tearing repair bills are valid but they could perhaps fall under work-related, couldn t they? I also believe the plastic surgery required for blue-chalk removal should be included under that same umbrella. There can be no question about the ophthalmology bills for all the should-have-gones and those rare eye-poppings triggered by some of the lucky rolls. Claiming liquid consolation under medication costs might be pushing it a little Tournament entry fees are surely the same as professional dues. If they aren t, I just cannot imagine what would be. Room and board for working away from home I will have to look up the allowed amounts for that. The travel expenses themselves are perhaps in the gray area but I HAVE to go to those tournaments, darn it, and the only way is to travel there, so they certainly should be allowed. Well, I am ready now! Break out those forms and let me at them! I cannot help but feel, though, that we should be exempt from tax filing when our birthday falls on the cutoff date, don t you? After all, it does seem like a bit of a cosmic insult Happy tax day, all you honest (of course) & upright (at least when sober) citizens. Mary Price, Helena, MT. cosmic insultee

Press Release: NWPA Prepares for Tour Stop #2 - Use Player Feedback to Ensure Highest Level of Player and Sponsor Satisfaction; Change in Board Membership Upon the successful completion of the NWPA s first season tour stop at PJ Pockets [Federal Way, WA], the NWPA Board continues work to achieve excellence in their mission of providing a venue to support women s pool at all levels. As such, they have bean dedicating a significant amount of time to reviewing the results of their first tour stop offering. Though a great success for the organization, the board was keenly interested in any areas where players felt improvement would be beneficial to their overall playing experience on the tour. The result of this review will be reflected immediately at the next NWPA tour stop - Q Street Billiards; Springfield, OR on April 13-14, 2002. Players can expect to see such improvements as easier to read player table cards, score keeping tools, less wait time between matches -resulting in tournaments run according to schedule, and improved prize payout to lower finishing players. The board will continue to use player feedback to ensure they are delivering the highest caliber of women s tour offering available in the Pacific Northwest. In addition, there have been several changes to the existing NWPA Board Membership. It is with well wishes the board accepts the resignations of Kim Sijer, Board Assistant and Brad Gowin, Oregon State Tournament Director and Player Advocate, whose personal and work obligations were requiring more of their time. The entire NWPA Board is grateful for the tremendous contribution of time and assistance these two individuals lent the organization, enabling a great start to a new tour offering and tournament season. As a result of these changes, and in reviewing the initial structure of the board, the following was unanimously voted at a recent meeting: 1. The NWPA Board will accept resumes for two positions - the Oregon State Player Advocate and the Oregon State Tournament Director. The board agreed that the duties of Board Assistant would be shared amongst all beard members and as such, would not be re-filled. NOTE; All interested NWPA playing members or other third parties are encouraged to apply visit the NWPA website at www.nwpatour.com, or contact NWPA Chairperson, Vic Valdez, at (503) 504-1483 for job descriptions. 2. The NWPA Board will be responsible for the review of all resumes and selection to the board. The board will offer an annual survey to playing members, in addition to ongoing seasonal use of state Player Advocates, as a gauge to ensure players are satisfied with the Board Membership and resulting accomplishments for the tour. 3. The NWPA Board will provide a public announcement once they have filled the current vacancies in their membership. The NWPA continues their efforts in building a quality women s pool tour, including completion of their website, as well as ongoing marketing and promotional efforts. Be advised that efforts are underway to secure newsprint and television coverage for their Springfield, OR stop. NWPA playing members of Oregon State are encouraged to submit a personal bio in anticipation of possible selection for media coverage. If you have not already done so, please send your bio to Heather Doherty, Media/ Promotions Coordinator email: poolne1h@aol.com. OTB

Good Time Ernies Attitude of Champions
with
Brad Gowin, Portland, OR
What is attitude? The dictionary describes it as (A) a mental position with regard to a fact or state. (B) a feeling or emotion toward a fact or state. It is my opinion the attitude of each individual is a programmed response. As children we see and become the product of the environment we are raised in. As we see others around us respond to situations, we learn to respond the same. Our parents responses and attitudes become ours. We even pick up many of the same habits from them. Therefore, as you read this article, try replacing the word attitude with habit. One of the key elements of any great player is creating championship habits. Mastering all basic phases of the game leads into the mental or psychological phase. Perhaps the most difficult, but not impossible, a definite set and style of principles and values must be learned and practiced daily in all areas of life. This is the road of a champion and cannot be achieved without proper attitude.
shot look and act so impressive. One of the details is in attaining expert instruction. Sadly enough there aren t many good ones to pick from. Some are teaching incorrectly because they were taught incorrectly themselves, while some are just plain phonies. These teachers develop many devious methods in order to keep their students. I can t make this big draw shot. What am I doing wrong? Your attitude isn t right! Try harder! If the teacher is a good enough talker he can get the student excited to try harder, but it doesn t help. The problem lies with the instructors. They aren t giving correct instruction or don t know how to teach. The problem here is the student fails to learn and improve. He thinks it s his fault. The teacher blames the student for not learning instead of looking in the mirror where the real guilt is.
Your attitude must be correct to do anything properly. In learning attitude is essential for several reasons. In pool six months is an extremely short time, impossible to accomplish much! A beginning student might be executing shots correctly, and playing for position occasionally, but has he mastered anything yet? At this stage the student is only emulating his instructor. It hasn t totally sunk in yet! He hasn t learned it until he s forgotten it. Being intelligent the student becomes frustrated. He has two choices, quit or continue. If the attitude is correct he will continue. We must recognize attitude has an extremely important aspect to learning. There is a need for the students to have absolute faith in their instructor. You must be willing to follow the teachings of the instructor with a hope you will finally understand and know for yourself. The problem is attitude alone will not make you a champion unless you add to it correct instruction. Without a good fundamental form you re wasting a lot of time. What good does any knowledge do if you can t send the ball from point A to point B with precision. Too many young players spend all of their time trying to learn this shot or that, when in fact it s the fundamental details that make the

Attitude is a must! Without it your practice is a waste. You also need correct teaching to guide you on the right path. Keep a good attitude in all areas of your life, including pool. Then be certain you have a teacher who is worthy of using it.

McQ s Billiards Ohrstrom Comes Through On The First Try Randy Ohrstrom from Spokane Washington parlayed the first B tournament he ever tried into a first place finish. Cutting his way through a very tough bracket and getting to the winners final, Randy defeated all that faced him. With an opening round win over Scott Chandler 5-4, Randy went on to defeat Jeremy Whitesell 5-3, Joe Horner 5-4, Mike Tinney 53 and Rob Hamilton 5-2 before losing his only match to Greg Gilliland 15. Sent to the losers side Randy beat Danny Quince 5-2 to get a rematch. Since all McQ s tournaments are a true double elimination. Randy would have to take him out twice. And twice was nice for Randy winning the first set 5-3, and the second in a very exciting 5-4 match to take home the first place prize. Good job Randy!!! As always I want to thank all that played, this field was pretty even as any number of players could have won this tournament. And as you all know that s how I like it. Inventor Hopes Pool-Cue Holder Will Fill Pockets
The Gripper Cue Caddies could rack up profits for inventor, Doug Clark says. Doug Clark - Staff writer, Spokesman-Review Tuesday, March 5, 2002 - Spokane, WA What s made of squishy rubber, comes in an assortment of bright colors and looks like a threefingered hand exerciser? Only the invention that may put Bill Bauer on Easy Street, that s what. The happy ending to this tale is a ways off from being written. But sales of Bauer s The Gripper Cue Caddies are moving well enough to make the inventor believe that his ship just might be rolling in. Bauer s biggest fear is that he won t be on the dock to greet it when it arrives. I m almost 70 years old, Bauer says. I m about to celebrate my 50th wedding anniversary and things are finally looking up. Bauer is a stocky, plain-spoken guy who looks a decade younger than his age. He manages one of Bill Bauer those mini-storage facilities in north Spokane with Margaret, his wife. He is also CEO and the creative force driving Bauer Enterprises. Which sounds more important than it is since Bauer is the only force driving Bauer Enterprises. But the smallness of the venture in no way diminishes the niftiness of what this unlikely entrepreneur has dreamed up. Bauer s Cue Caddy is an ingenious cure for sliding stick syndrome, a malady that has plagued pool parlors since the dawn of, well, pool. Many a game has been interrupted by the clatter of a misplaced cue smacking the floor. And how about all those chalk marks left on walls by leaning cues? A longtime pool shark, Bauer saw these problems and said, No more! Yes, set a Cue Caddy on the edge of any flat surface and you ve got an instant cradle for up to three cues. (They sell for $18.95 plus shipping. Check out the caddies and other products at Bauer s Web site: gripperbilliards.com.) This is the only legacy I think I ll be able to give back to the billiards industry for all the enjoyment it has given me, Bauer says. It s always inspiring to see someone laying it on the line for a dream. That s Bauer. He says he has sunk just about every penny he has into this one. His affection for sinking balls into pockets began as a kid growing up in Allentown, Pa. A shortcut he took home from school led him right past a basement pool hall called Smoker s Paradise. The crack of a cue ball slamming into tightly racked balls caught his attention. Peering through the windows, Bauer watched in fascination as cigar-smoking men moved gracefully around felt-covered tables. Within days, he had wormed his way inside. Soon he was sweeping the floors and racking balls in exchange for pool lessons. Everything I ever learned about geometry and physics I learned on a pool table, Bauer says. Marriage, raising four kids, 23 years in the U.S. Army and selling cars filled in most of Bauer s life. But he never stopped playing pool for long. He now plays in the senior divisions of major national tournaments. About five years ago, he began turning a flash of inspiration into a real, patented product. I don t look at an idea and say, `Wow, what a good idea, he says. I look at ideas and wonder how I can improve them. Bauer worked long and hard to perfect his Cue Caddy. The biggest step came when he shelled out thousands for injection molds so that the caddies could be mass produced. He s hoping his gamble pays off. Big time. Bauer says the word is spreading. He s already sold 1,500 Cue Caddies since January. That s almost as many sales as he racked up for all of 2001. There s more. After listening to gun enthusiasts in a barber shop one day, Bauer had another flash of creativity. He modified his caddies into bright orange, three-grooved rests that will keep rifles from slipping off a tailgate. The other day, Bauer says he got a call from a vice president of the world s largest catalog for firearm accessories. The man, he says, was talking about placing an order for 5,000 of those orange beauties. Will success find a home in Bill Bauer s workshop? I m scared, the inventor says. I feel like I have to keep moving. I can t stub my toe or everything might fall apart.

As usual with these kind of questions, it is difficult to know exactly what your problem is without more info but, I will attempt to throw a few ideas out there. I am going to assume that you have one of the typical brands of coin-op tables. First, you should make sure that the rails have been tightened down until very snug. Next, how does the ball behave when hit into the rail? Does it rebound well or come off and die? You may have crystallized or otherwise bad rubber that needs changing. Are the rails on your table the ones that came with the table? Do they look like they fit well or are at an improper height? There is a practice with some recovery services to change out rails (without you knowing) so that they can take them back to their shop for recovery. This happens a lot on Valley and Dynamo tables because they are so universal and you can end up with old, worn or improperly fitted rails. Finally and unfortunately there are some tables on the commercial market that have no support at the end rail and could be the source of your problem. Thanks again for the Question and hope this helps. Leo Hancock

MEDINA Wins....continued from front page On the one loss side, Tourangeau had been on a tear since losing to Haddad in the early going. He reeled off seven in a row, starting with a 98 nail biter over Jeff Heath. Then he caught a gear, beating Ed Scott 9-4, Buddy Davis 9-4, ALEX PAGULAYAN 9-5, Gerardo Jamito 9-8 (whew!), Edwin Montal 9-5 and Ron Wiseman 9-7. Now the red hot Tourangeau (by the way he was the defending champion) had Kim Davenport to deal with, and nobody has to like playing Kim at 9 Ball on any size table. What a match! It had everything, great shot making, super safeties and pressure! pressure! pressure! Neither player gave an inch and it was left for Stan to make a dramatic run-out when it was hill-hill to win. Eight in a row and now he had to face the little killer...Jose Parica, only one of the greatest pool players ever. Once again Stan the Man was up to the task, narrowly edging Jose out 9-7. Now there were two left standing, one who took the short route to the finals (right, only seven wins) and one who was on a nine match tear. Being true double elimination, Stan had to beat Mark twice. It was not to be as Mark took the first set 9-7 playing strong all the way from start to finish. What a big win for a long time player who is on top of his game right now. We re sure to hear more from him soon. 1st $5,000 MARK HADDAD 2nd $3,000 Stan Tourangeau 3rd $2,000 Jose Parica 4th $1,200 Kim Davenport 5-6 $ 800 Amar Kang, Ron Wiseman 7-8 $ 600 Eddie Sabala, Edwin Montal 9-12 $ 400 Gerardo Jamito, Shane Manaole, Rich Geiler, Danny Medina 13-16 $ 250 George Edwards, Mike Massey, Alex Pagulayan, Jose Garcia 17-24 $ 150 Simon Pickering, Eddie Jackson, Leroy Dorsey, Dave Martin, Buddy Davis, Bernardo Chavez, Tyler Luce, Bryce Avila 25-32 $ 100 Ed Scott, Pat Schumacher, Chris MacDonald, Ronnie Allen, Frank Almanza, Len Swisher, Jim Sullivan, Chad Alexander
If the 9 Ball wasn t exciting enough, the 8 Ball with a full field of 128 (and a waiting list) had fireworks to spare. A similar scenario to the 9 Ball developed with Danny Medina cruising thru six matches to reach the hot seat match with surprising senior Frank The Barber Almanza. Danny had turned back Andrew Monstis 5-3, Mike Massey 5-1, Paul Juarez 5-2, Dave Martin 5-4, Simon Pickering 5-1 and Chris MacDonald 5-3. Frank, meanwhile, had gotten by E. Lingboan 5-2, Kurt Weiss 5-4, Macapio Pea 5-1, Hunter Roberts 5-1, Kim Davenport 5-4 and Tinsley Johnson 5-3. In the hot seat match it was all Danny as he stomped on Frank 5-1. On the one loss side, making a big move was the charismatic Canadian star Alex Pagulayan. He lost in the third round to Chris MacDonald 5-1 and then fought off Bryce Avila 5-4, Tony Watson 5-4, Hunter Roberts 51, Pat Schumacher 5-1, Simon Pickering 5-2 and John Widen 5-2. This set up a revenge match with MacDonald and Alex put him down 5-3. In the one loss final, Alex gave Frank the Barber a 5-3 trimming. Eight in a row for Alex and he was the man with the hot stick. Now he needed two wins over Danny to take the title. Alex took him to hill-hill in the first set, but Danny was not to be denied, and made an incredible run-out to take the game and the match. 1st $5,000 DANNY MEDINA 2nd $3,000 Alex Pagulayan 3rd $2,000 Frank Almanza 4th $1,200 Chris MacDonald 5-6 $ 800 Tinsley Johnson, Chad Alexander 7-8 $ 600 Edwin Montal, John Widen 9-12 $ 400 Simon Pickering, Gene Ventura, Kim Davenport, Len Swisher 13-16 $ 300 Pat Schumacher, Slim Ron Allen, Bernardo Chavez, Kevin Osborn 17-24 $ 200 Rich Geiler, Dave Martin, Amar Kang, Tony Chohan, Hunter Roberts, Dave Lillo, Paul Juarez, Ron Wiseman 25-32 $ 150 Tony Watson, Tom Lyons, Marc Hiatt, Paul Silva, Chris Jung, Jose Parica, Mark Haddad, Mike Stevens
A Triangle Cue??
OTB
Stop and think for a moment The only reason cue sticks are round. Let me repeat that so you clearly understand. The only reason cue sticks are round is because they can be turned out on a lathe very quickly. Curl your index finger as though you are grasping your cue. What shape do you see?
O? or
?
Now imagine your backhand stroking (or swinging) as some put it. 1. Is your elbow in tight against your body? 2. Does your hand or wrist twist while stroking the cue? 3. Can you detect any side-to-side misalignment with your cue? 4. Would you consider your final delivery stroke a perfect pendulum follow through? If you answered no, to one or more of these questions perhaps you should at least try a triangle cue. After all what do you have to lose? More important what do you have to gain. This new design will keep a new player from developing bad habits. Best of all it may break any bad habits a seasoned player may have developed. Realize one thing (the stranger if feels in your hand, the more you probably need it). Think about this, 100% of the out come on every shot, depends on 100% of everything you do before the shot. Period !!!

Four Ball Stroke Shot
This shot is not what you would normally call a trick shot or set up shot. This shot is a skill shot because it requires skill to execute the shot. This shot works best on a nine foot table. Don t try this shot on a tight pocketed table as well. The corner pocket openings should be at least 4 3/4 inches at the mouth of the pocket. Place the balls as shown. Hit the cue ball with high right english and contact 1/3 of ball A. The cue ball will then carom to pocket balls A and B in the same corner pocket. The cue ball will then go across the table as shown to pocket balls C and D in the other corner pocket. This shot only requires a moderate to moderately hard stroke. This shot may take you a little while to perfect. Remember, this shot is a skill shot.
Keep Stroking! Sarge

On The Break
is proud to announce the Player Appreciation Giveway Winner Susan Rodriguez
Susan is from Portland, Oregon and shoots in the BCA league. On February 15, 2002 her name was drawn from among 2357 entries. When asked to describe how she got started playing pool she responded, I was 12 years old when I first layed eyes on a pool table and from that day on I was hooked. I watched people play every day for two weeks before I played my first game. It looked easy to me, at first, then I made my first stroke. People told me that I had a natural eye for the game so I continued to play constantly. I ended up staying on a plateau after twenty years caused by a lack of guidance. Just last season with the BCA (my first season that is) I won an award for being MVP of my Panther division. I did it in only 8 weeks. I was so surprised, I cried when I found out. Now I have finally made it to Regionals and am planning to attend Nationals next month. Wish me luck! My ultimate goal is to become a professional pool player. Susan was presented her Pechauer Custom cue J9 at the WBPPA Championships March 1st. We here at On The Break wish Susan all the luck she ll need. OTB

very lucky in having the most able Gary Benson, of The National BCA, come to lend his personal experience and computer expertise to our tournament. The timing was excellent and the matches stayed pretty close to the posted times throughout. This was helped, by having the matches start at 8AM each day and allowing a full day for the Scotch Doubles to be played in it s entirety. Except for the Teams, the matches were shortened by one game from last years Regional 8-Ball. This made a huge difference and things went smoothly. Due to space limitations, and the large amount of entries in this popular 8-Ball tournament, it has become a real challenge to play and complete all matches in the 5 days needed. I heard many compliments for a great tournament. We wish to thank all of the volunteers who gave of their time refereeing, posting scores and doing all of the little things it takes to make things run smoothly. Congratulations to everyone for great play and sportsmanship, ensuring the continued success of this and future tournaments. (Results can be found on page 21)
Publishers Note Once again the WBPPA tournament in this pool players opinion, was a great success. There are only two issues that I would like to address. The first issue presented itself as a very difficult one for myself. I arrived on Friday March 1st and was treated to watching some great finals, and stayed for two more days. It is very difficult to watch that much pool and not play. The second issue is a little more of a serious note. The results of the Women s Open Team champions are on page 21, unfortunately there is no photo. The reason there is no photo is, when I asked Carissa Biggs if I may take a picture of her winning team. She said NO. I asked her if that was her decision or her teams decision. She had no comment. I would like to apologize to the other ladies on Ms Biggs team for not being able to take their photo so it could appear along with the other champions.

From: Kathi Giles Another tournament draws in some excellent shooters through the snow and bitterly cold winds. Sam Wak Wak was sent to the losers bracket after his first match with Ike Williams, but managed to skate his way through the field to a return duel with Ike, who had been sent to the losers side by his wife, Bunny Williams, another awesome shooter. It was a tough match with Ike, but Sam got his revenge, and went on to play Jeff Rounds. Jeff had remained undefeated until his close matchup with Bert Mikos for the hot seat. Sam and Jeff played a touch and go match for a while, then Sam got deadly, beat Jeff and went on to take both matches against the undefeated Bert, who had been doing pretty good up to that point. Well, it was a fun and interesting way to spend a cold, blustery day! Thanks for coming everyone. Hope to see you again soon! 1st Sam Wak Wak 2nd Bert Miko 3rd Jeff Rounds OTB Top Lady Bunny Williams

SHORTHORN TAVERN MIXED DOUBLES
by: Kathi Giles FEBRUARY 23RD & 24TH 17 couples from all over Eastern Washington made this late Valentine s Day Mixed Doubles 8-ball, race to 5, Tournament a highly competitive event. From the start Ike Williams and Kathi Giles had it rough, losing to Wayne Boyd and Gail Stensgar in their very first match. But they kept with it and plowed their way through, only to find they d be playing Wayne and Gail once again, who had been knocked to the losers bracket by Marc Vargas and Desiree LaPlante. Ike and Kathi thought they had the match when the score was 4 - 0. However, Wayne and Gail had other ideas and used some incredible strategy to run 5 straight and leave Ike and Kathi in 4th place. Meanwhile, the ferocious Dave Williams and Michelle Gambel and the notorious T.J. Frank and Amber Johnson tore their way through the winners bracket to meet up in a match for the hot seat. It was a tough match, with T.J and Amber coming out on top, leaving Dave and Michelle to face Wayne and Gail, who were still hot from defeating Ike and Kathi. It was touch and go, but Wayne and Gail did some fancy footwork and left Dave and Michelle in 3rd place. Then they went on to show T.J. and Amber just how hot they were. With an incredible show of excellent pool playing ability from both teams Wayne and Gail managed to fight their way all the way to the top! This was a very entertaining tournament for all the players involved. Hope to see you again soon! 1st $404 Wayne Boyd and Gail Stensgar 2nd $303 T.J. PASTIME TAVERN LADIES TOURNAMENT by: Kathi Giles
Saturday, March 9th, the Pastime Tavern in Oroville, WA, scheduled a Ladies 8-Ball Tournament, hoping to get a few women to show up. Talk about a few!!! 24 wonderful, stick-toting ladies arrived from as far away as Grand Coulee, ready to do battle. This was a short, race to 2, 1 day tourney so no one had to wait forever to get into the ring. Violet Buckner, who just got dragged along from Omak because she really didn t know how to play , managed to fight her way through most of the winners side before falling to Mary Beth Clark. Then she beat Doris Matt, who had fought her way through some hard matches in the losers bracket, to meet up with Mary Beth once again. Mary Beth had stayed on the winners side until she ran into Sheila Baker, to duke it out for the hot seat and lost. Violet succeeded in defeating Mary Beth s excellent abilities but then found Sheila too hot to handle. Sheila was really tough, and played fantastic throughout the entire event. All in all, it was a friendly, fast-paced, go for broke day that had everyone hopping, especially the bartenders! Thanks to all the great women who showed up to make this an exciting day of pool playing. It s always nice to meet more ladies who enjoy the sport! 1st $85 Sheila Baker 2nd $45 Violet Buckner 3rd $25 Mary Beth Clark OTB 4th $15 Doris Matt

Press Releases From: Leagues, Manufacturers, Suppliers, Organizations, Instructional and anything of interest in the pool and billiards community.
BCA Board Votes to Move Toward USOC Recognition from: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development March 1, 2002 Colorado Springs, CO Providing leadership to the billiard industry and growing cue sports worldwide are two major goals of the Billiard Congress of America (BCA). At a recent BCA Board of Directors meeting, an important vote was cast that will move cue sports one step closer to Olympic participation. The Board will propose to the BCA members that they ratify a list of by-laws changes that includes increasing the size of the board from 18 to 20 positions, with four of the positions reserved for U.S. citizens meeting the Player definition of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). By achieving 20% player representation on the board and all committees that affect players, the BCA will be able to proceed with the application process for USOC recognition as an Affiliated Sport Organization. Once this recognition is secured, the BCA will work with other cue sport organizations throughout the world to have cue sports included in the Pan American or Olympic Games. (www.bca-pool.com)

TAP and NPA Merge The Association for P.O.O.L. Inc. (TAP) and National Pool Players Association (NPA) are pleased to announce that they have merged. Steve Floyd, NPA founder and owner decided his players would be best served by merging with TAP. After considerable research. Steve found that TAP s philosophy of putting the players first, TAP s handicapping, TAP s payout percentages and rules of play were exactly in line with his. He further decided that because of TAP s upcoming nationals and their affiliation with Allen Hopkins Super Billiard Expo that TAP could provide additional advantages to his players in a more timely manner than he would be able to offer at the present time. Loyd Schonter, TAP founder and president, commented on the merger saying that this was a very positive step for both TAP and NPA and that players in both organizations would benefit. Loyd was also impressed with Steve s commitment to his players. He evaluated what Steve brought to the table in terms of areas where TAP does not have a presence and felt this would become a significant asset to the TAP family.

will go ahead and charge a green fee and see how players respond to that. Danny ran into Tim Tweedell the next match and lost 13-9, and on the B-side took care of Eddie Carrido 13-8, Mike Vidas 13-10, and another KO over Kris Iverson, 11-4. Meanwhile, Tim s journey to the winner s circle began with a KO s over Joe Bonilla 9-2, and Margie Ito 9-2, and then victories over JD 13-8, and Dan Louie 13-9. This brought him to play for the point with Kris Iverson. Kris had been playing strongly all weekend, but faltered against the Red Raider, getting KO ed 11-4. In the Finals, Tim and Dan traded games, with no one gaining the upper hand, but when the chalk dust had finally settled, Tim emerged the victor and goes into the record books as the first winner of a UPPA event. Thanks to the 2 courageous ladies who played, Margie Ito and Deby Welfringer, and to all those who braved the snow. Our next 10-Ball event will be April 27-28 at the Cue Lounge. They have 12 tables, and we will be limiting the field to the first 64 paid players. Sign up early and don t miss the excitement! Chuck Wiseman 1953-2002
The late Chuck Wiseman of Helena, Montana, first got hooked on shooting pool in about 1972. He spent the next several years on the tables, studying under the tutelage of local pool shark Johnny Stemple. When Corner Pocket Billiards first opened in Helena in 1974, Chuck helped set the tables up, and witnessed Billings Billy Saunders lose a finger when one of the slates was accidentally dropped on his hand. Wiseman worked in the pool hall and practiced the game, becoming proficient at eight-ball, nine-ball and 14.1 straight pool. He was good on both the regulation size tables and the bar tables, and developed into one of the areas top shooters. In 1977, Chuck helped the Corner Pocket s team win the Helena pool league title. From 1984-1990 in the City League (6-man doubles), he was the sparkplug on five regular season championship teams and one post season tournament winner. In the Valley League, his teams captured three season crowns, one qualifying tourney, and two 2nd-chance playoffs. Probably the pinnacle of Chuck s career came in 1988, when Miller s Cave No. 1 (Wiseman, Ken Nettleton, Dave Fuller, Jack Vaughn and Al Roy) became the first Helena team ever to crack the top-50 at the VNEA International
Championships, tying for 33rd place in a field of 258 teams in Reno, Nevada. Chuck played pool leagues up until 1996, and he usually brought along his two little men, Tucker and Tyser, who rooted for dad from the sidelines. For his last six or seven years of leagues he never practiced, devoting more time to his family and other interests, especially snowmobiling. But he still was able to hold his own most of the time on the table through his sheer pool savvy and competitive energy. A fiery adversary, Chuck s teammates were inspired by enthusiasm, and trusted his clutch play under pressure. I loved Chuck Wiseman. He passed away on February 8 at the age of 49. So goodbye for now, old friend. I ll meet you on the other side. And when I do, I hope there s a pool table there, so you can show me again those two insanely difficult eight-ball shots you made a reverse angle bank and a masse that helped us win the championship at the Korner Bar back in 87...
