Dear Cheese I thought I would let you know how much I enjoyed the article in your publication, “The Break” about Jack Madden, also it was nice of you to put the Butt of my New Butterfly Cue on the Front Page. I saw your newspaper on your web-site. I also really enjoyed looking at your newspaper and only wish you would include Arizona in your Area of Circulation, & Editorial Coverage, as we need a good billiards Newspaper here in PHX Area. Love your use of color on each page. I am impressed with what you are offering as an alternative to what we have in AZ. I wish you the greatest luck penetrating the Arizona Market, and I hope to see your Publication in the Major Pool Orientated Bars in the Copper State. The layout and use of color in your publication show you put a great deal of effort into your publication, and it is just not another iron in the Fire that gets some of your attention, part of the month. BTW I was involved in the Publishing, News, and Printing Industry for a few years, so I fell I am qualified to judge the quality of a publication use of Color, Layout, and Editorial content. Many Find Pot O’Gold at the End of the WBCA Rainbow The 2007 Western Billiards Congress of American (BCA) Regional 8Ball Championships turned out to be more than just another day at the beach. Lepricons were “sighted” at the event. It is even rumored that the lepricons were responsible for the record money-added for the 12th Annual WBCA 8-Ball Regional Champions hosted by the Chinook Winds Resort at Lincoln City on March 13-18. The excitement was so high that even members of the Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce heard the buzz and turned out to watch. 1st Place Women’s Masters Cindy Doty This year’s regional tournament hosted 1,111 player-members with over 1,808 entries in 15 events. Entries increased a whopping 25 percent, with the biggest increases in Scotch doubles and women’s events. A whopping record of $95,525, including $10,000 from Chinook Winds Casino Resort and $1,000 from the national BCA Pool League, was paid out in the different events. T h i s tournament brings in toplevel players to one of the best regional pool tournaments in the country. Competitors began rolling in 1st Place Women’s Open Team: Driving 101 Again like waves on Nicole Bisconer-Fox, Catherine Dunfor, Linda Knight, M o n d a y Shirley Morgan, Eve Stockstill evening for the Scotch doubles, which began Tuesday morning. Many of the top players came and showcased their skills, some playing for the first time in the regional championship. Nationally known top players came such Glenn Atwell, Mike Zimmerman, Todd Marsh and world champion Dan Louie. This was the 12th Annual Regional Championship and the ninth time that Scotch doubles have been an official part of the championships. The growth has been staggering.

Starting as an unofficial late-night mini tournament, the event has grown to a full-fledged part of the championships. Scotch doubles now fills the room’s 72 tables for a day and a half. The 112 open couples and 35 master couples were both records for the event. The Masters Scotch Doubles was a nail biter. Glenn Atwell (grand master) and Andrea Saenz-Maes (master) prevailed over Linda Carter (master) and Mike Zimmerman 1st Place Open Scotch Doubles (Grandmaster) in the finals of the Margie Avlon, David Bersenadze traditional event. In the open division, David Bersenadze and Margie Avlon from Seattle defeated the brother and sister combo of Tommy and Cindy Sliva, Tacoma, to become champions in Open Scotch doubles. Mini-tournaments started on Wednesday night, with formats ranging from Open B Singles to Master Scotch, and play finishing on Friday night. In S e c o n d C h a n c e tournaments, Western BCA added $100 to the pot for the S e c o n d C h a n c e M a s t e r singles, giving winner Robert Neimeyer $200. The singles events got underway Thursday morning with Men’s Master. Men’s Grandmaster Dan Louie of Seattle played like the champion he is, climbing to the top to become the WBCA 2007 8-Ball Masters champion. He went through a tough field, defeating his teammate Todd Marsh (who took second) to win the toughest and largest Masters field ever. Women’s Master Cindy Doty League won over Barb Thompson in a classic battle, with Barb taking the first match from Cindy, who had won the point. Cindy, however, came out the winner. Both Dan Louie and Cindy Doty, as winners of Masters’ singles, will also receive free entry into singles events at the BCAPL

Sherman, Sassy Campbell (back after a few year’s layoff) and Cindy Rosenthal, kept everyone one informed. Andrew Monstis, Membership Committee, gave away over $2,000 worth of prizes. Darryl Farley brought in a crew of refs with national credentials who did an outstanding job. Not enough can be said about the job our Secretary/Treasure Joyce Gumm did in gathering and verifying the entries, getting out the checks in record time and answering all the little questions that needed answers. As always, Gary Benson and High Country Promotions did a great job of running the tournament and providing the tables. On The Break produced the full-color tournament program this year. A huge thanks to goes to BCAPL Mark Griffin’s national team for their support given here and nationally. Others volunteered many hours so that this tournament would run efficiently and people would enjoy the event. Again, thanks to all. As this tournament ended, it was very gratifying to hear the many positive comments made by players and spectators. “I have attended many of the Western BCA’s regional tournaments, and this is the best 8-ball ever held,” one player said. Countless others echoed these sentiments. The caliber of pool continues to grow at the Western BCA tournaments and when you add players of the caliber of National Grandmasters Dan Louie and Mike Zimmerman the future looks bright. Next up is the Annual 9-Ball Championship on October 23-28. Stay tuned - it will be a dandy. San Francisco Billiard Academy About three years ago, I covered some vocabulary associated with cue sticks. This time I’ll go over some terms associated with play. Even if you are a long-time player, check out the meanings as there you may find some surprises. Swerve — When you hit the cue ball with side spin, it doesn’t go in a straight path down the table. Instead it will curve some to the side of the spin. This curving is called swerve. It is like a mild form of masse. On regular shots, it is bothersome and can cause you to miss, but if you need to get around a ball, slightly, it can be very useful. Increase it by elevating, using more side spin, Bob Jewett and using draw. Shoot softer if you want the swerve to happen in a short distance. Throw — When the cue ball lands on the object ball, you would like the object ball to go straight away from the cue ball. Many aiming systems are based on this fundamental idea. Unfortunately, if the cue ball has spin it can rub on the object ball and pull it off to the side a little. This effect is called throw. This can also happen if the cue ball has no spin but is cutting the object ball at an angle. In this case, the cue ball drags the object ball in the direction of its movement, a little. This latter kind of throw is also seen in frozen combinations that appear to be lined up straight to the pocket, but if the first ball is hit across the second, the

second will be dragged some to the side. Skid — This is what happens when there is extreme throw between balls. It seems to be caused by chalk or some other substance at the contact point between the cue ball and the object ball. Low speed spin shots seem to be the most common situation for it to strike. The unexpected change in object ball angle can be up to 10 degrees or more, which is more than enough to cause a miss. You can also see skid on a plain soft follow shot when the cue ball jumps into the air on striking the object ball and then doesn’t follow as much as expected. Skid is also called “cling” and in the UK it’s called “kick.” In the US, to “kick” at a ball means to play the cue ball to a cushion before hitting the object ball. Slide — Sometimes people confuse this with skid. When the cloth is brand new, the balls tend to slide on it rather than roll. This can be quite noticeable when a striped object ball banks into the cushion and upon leaving the cushion it seems to slide for a long distance without any normal rotation. When the cloth has a lot of slide, it is fun to play draw shots at an angle because you can get much wider curves than with normal conditions. If you want to experience some of this on old cloth, apply a silicone spray such as ArmorAll to the ball. You can use this technique in your practice if you are going to a tournament that will have new, slidy cloth but you can’t afford to replace the cloth on your home table. The silicone spray will wear off in a few racks, so you will have to reapply it. Running — English comes in two major flavors. Running English refers to side spin that tends to make the cue ball go faster around the table. If you shoot the cue ball from a corner pocket to the long rail by the opposite corner, and you use English towards that corner pocket (right if going around the table clockwise), that is running English. If you have to hit several rails before the object ball, it tends to make the table play more consistently. Also called “natural” English. Reverse — This is the opposite of running English. It does not refer to backspin, but rather to rubbing “the wrong way” on the cushion. Try the same 3-cushion shot you played above, but try it with the other side spin. You will probably find that the wrong way rub slows the ball down, and Continued........page 14

A few weeks ago, I was being a railbird at a local weekly big table 8 ball tournament. This tournament is one of only a handful in town that is sure to draw in all big dogs. As I watched and noticed the choices many of these players made, I learned some new perspectives. However, I was also happy to discover I played many of the same patterns from my seat. In a semi-finals match, my friend Kris had ball in hand with three balls left. One of them was tied up with his opponent’s only ball. The corner pocket nearest those two balls was blocked by the 8 ball. Another one of his balls was sitting near the neighboring side pocket. With ball in hand, he could’ve played that ball in the side and bumped the cluster and hoped for a shot. Or, he could’ve Samm Diep stroked a different ball into the opposite corner pocket and guaranteed a breakout with a shot at the ball in the side pocket. Instead of either breakout, he chose a defensive shot. His safety ultimately led to winning the game, but afterwards I inquired about his shot selection. The stroke shot in the corner seemed logical to me. It was slightly aggressive but very make-able, especially with ball in hand. He responded that he had rattled a few balls in that corner pocket in earlier matches and it made him a bit nervous to have to stroke a ball in there. I understood exactly what he was saying. Some may disagree, but I could completely appreciate his decision. When Monica Webb was recently in town, the biggest thing she emphasized to me was, “Know your own game.” Know your own stroke and capabilities. Basically, play your game and not someone else’s. In that moment, Kris saw the hairy corner pocket as a limitation and chose to play to his strengths. To him, shooting that ball in the corner for the breakout was, at the time, a low percentage shot. Instead, he chose the safety, which he knew he could execute. Of course, there’s always the “right” shot. That’s the shot that ties the entire run together. That’s the shot that if we just make it, the entire rack will fall into place and be that much easier. That’s the shot that in a room full of pool players, 9 out of 10 of them would agree on that shot. However, is the right shot really the right shot when we don’t have the confidence to execute it??? There comes a point when, once we reach a certain level, we don’t always choose the shots that the books/videos or our coach or our teammates want us to. When we’re at the table, there’s only one person that knows what the real “right” shot is for us in that moment, in that game. Regardless of whom you’re playing or what the score is, choose the shot that you believe in and believe in the shot that you choose. ACS Gains National Governing Body Scholarships Available Status for Carom, Pool and Snooker

With the ultimate goal of gaining cue sport affiliation to the USOC - US Olympic Committee, the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) is very pleased to announce a very significant restructuring within the United States for all three recognized disciplines of billiards - Carom, Pool and Snooker. Firstly, both the USBA - United States Billiard Association (Carom) and the USSA - United States Snooker Association (Snooker) formally agreed to be represented by the ACS within the international billiard structure. Having now met the requirements under IOC - International Olympic Committee continental structural guidelines, the CPB - Panamerican Billiard Confederation accepted and notified the appropriate world governing bodies of the ACS as its newest member. The ACS was then granted a certificate issued on February 2, 2007 by the CPB that formally recognizes the ACS as the “governing body in the Billiard Sport in all their modalities Carom, Pool and Snooker, in the United States of America territory.” The CPB represents the Americas in the international billiard structure through its confederation membership to both the world governing body for carom - the Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) and the world governing body for pool - the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA). As a next step, this now sets the stage for the CPB to lobby on our behalf for the inclusion of cue sports into the 2011 Pan American Games in Jalisco, Mexico. The Pan American Games are produced every four years by PASO - Pan American Sports Organization, who within the IOC has represented the National Olympic Committees of all countries in the Americas, since 1948. The ACS has a board composed of independent League Operators, Referees, Room Owners and the primary non-profit Cue Sport Associations such as the United States Billiard Association, the United States Snooker Association, the National Wheelchair Poolplayers Association and others, so that the future promotion of cue sports in the United States can work in unison for the common good. April 2007 Dawn Hopkins Director of Program Development Billiard Education Foundation Executive Director Laura Smith has announced the hire of long time industry leader Dawn Hopkins as Director of Program Development to assist the BEF in its goal of growing billiard’s grass roots through increased youth programs. Ms. Hopkins has worn numerous hats since she became a pro player in 1990. She has served the billiard community as past president of the Women’s Professional Billiard Association, as an ESPN tournament commentator, and is also known as co-owner/promoter of the highly successful Super Billiards Expo in Valley Forge, PA. As Director of Program Development, Ms. Hopkins will work with the BEF’s new Executive Director to support and develop future players. The immediate focus will be the production of this summer ’s 2007 BEF Junior National 9-Ball Championships. USPPA Handicap 9-Ball March 10 was California Billiards $1,000 first prize monthly tournament. We had 36 players and decided to experiment with a single elimination with buyback format. The response from the players was positive and from this point forward we will be allowing a single buyback if you lose in the first 2 rounds of brackets. “Walking Highlight Reel” and 12-Time U.S. Billiards Champion Sole Nominee tournament organizer and promoter, staging four Sang Lee International COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., March 2, 2007 - Sang Chun Lee, the South Korean Tournament events in the 1990s that featured top international talent, as well as expatriate who won 12 consecutive U.S. Billiard Association National 14 U.S. Billiard Association events from 1998 to 2002. ball. Suppose you have a 30-degree cut shot down the rail and you want to keep the travel on the cue ball to a minimum after contact. Usually you need to use draw, low speed and outside English. The draw will slow the cue ball down on the way to the object ball. You want the draw to die out and almost turn into follow by the time it gets to the object ball. The outside English will allow you to hit the object ball fuller, since throw will help the angle, and that fuller hit will take more speed off the object ball. Finally, the side spin will be reverse on the cushion to slow the cue ball further. I hope that even if you knew most of the words above, this review got you to thinking about them in new, useful ways.

A “Classic” Classic Billiards By Don “Cheese” Akerlow

Classic Billiards, a mainstay in the Portland area, has made some major changes and you might want to check it out. Paul Shorzman, owner of Classic’s, took the time out of his busy schedule to talk to me and show me the changes he has made and what he has planned for the future. Paul has owned Classic’s for 22 years now and it has always been an all

ages pool hall. After running the pool hall as totally non-smoking for almost a year, Paul decided that it was time for a change. He applied for a beer and wine license, separated his room into two separate areas, one for smokers and one for nonsmokers. The non-smoking area is an expanded area with 8 pool tables all Gold Crowns, five eight-footers and three nine-footers. This is an excellent place to play if you’re looking for the non-smoking environment. The smoking area has undergone many changes as well. Besides adding beer and wine, Paul has recently added the Oregon Lottery. Paul commented, “This is just an additional area that we are supplying our customers with. It is a form of entertainment that the players enjoy. We feel it is the job of our business to provide our customers with what they want.” I noticed that one of the pool tables had been moved out of the area where the lottery was and so

I asked Paul about that, “We were trying to accomplish two things. One was to create an open area where the lottery machines would be without being too close to the pool tables. We have a lot of very good players in the Portland area come in and play on the front tables. The one table was awfully close so what I chose to do was pull my 10'

They serve fish & chips (cod or halibut), chicken dinners, homemade pizza, polish dogs, hot dogs, corn dogs, and pot pies

just to name a few. Ice cream is on the menu for desert, along with all the various soft drinks, Sobe and Snapple etc. TV’s are the new thing in

Classic’s. Paul used to have just one TV and commented, “I decided that it was time to put in some nice flat screen TVs. I put in three and I’m in the works of putting a fourth up. I think people have really liked them. You can watch the game and play pool at the same time.” Paul opened Classic’s in 1985 with a partner. After a year or two in business he was able to buy out his partner and he and his wife have run the business ever since. Paul’s brother Nathan is the on site manager who takes care of the day to day. Nathan not only takes care of the pool hall but oversees the Laundromat next door. Paul remarked, “A lot of our

customers that want to do their laundry will grab a table and they go back & forth. I was able to hire my brother on full time after buying the Laundromat. He is a big repair person and if you know anything about the Laundromat business you better have somebody who is good at

repairs.” I would have really appreciated a pool hall right next door to the Laurdromat where I washed my clothes! Never had the opportunity to take advantage of that. Classic’s has a great pool league following among the players. Currently he has the Cascade Pool League and is looking to expand the league action. He is

open to having APA, ACS or any other league in there. Paul said, “We do have eight-footers and nine-footers and of course, nine footers aren’t normally a league play table. I’m planning on pulling one 9' Gold Crown and adding another 8' Gold Crown. That way the league players can play on either side they want smoking or non-smoking which is a big plus.” The non-smoking side of Classic’s typically has a younger crowd (15-mid 20’s) and Paul is looking to make more upgrades to that side and give it more of a feel like the over 21 area. Paul said, “The younger players have been inspired by the really good

players that we have coming in here. They need to see how to finish a game, or a match or see a good run out or see a great shot, somebody pulling something out and that’s good. When they (Classics continued on page 30)

WPBA Qualifier Presented by J. Pechauer Custom Cues, March 10 - 11 33 Women came to Metro Sportz Bar to play in the AWBTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 3rd stop! This was WPBA Qualifier presented by J. Pechauer Custom Cues. The winner of this event will receive not only the $326 added monies, but also a paid spot into the Enjoypool.com WPBA 9-ball open in May at the Rivera Hotel in Vegas! Many of the usual favorites were knocked to the B-side early, allowing many fresh new faces to emerge on the A-side and also appear in the top 8 to come back and play on Sunday. These 4 matches were: On the A-side, Kristie Michelle Trevino Ortega vs. Leandrea Gaff and Marita Incalcaterra vs. Michelle Trevino. The B-side started with Susan Wilbur vs. Susan Mello and Holly Sholes vs. Kristin Haney. One by one ladies were eliminated until the top 4 emerged. Kristie Ortega made it through her bracket with ease and earned her way into her first AWBT hot seat match! Her opponent, Michelle Trevino, also played very well all weekend to earn her way to the hot seat! Michelle defeated Kristie with a score of 7 to 1 to allow herself a well-deserved break. Meanwhile, Kristin Haney beat Susan Mello in the 1st semi final match. Kristin went on to play Kristie Ortega in the 2nd semi final match. The match was quite close and both players did a great job, but Kristie came out on top and went on to play Michelle Trevino. Kristie Ortega took a brief and well-deserved breather as Michelle Trevino sat patiently waiting for the final match to begin. Since this is a true double elimination tournament Kristie will have to beat Michelle two matches of a race to seven. The game got started with Michelle winning the lag. From the 4 ball Kristie was able to get a nice run until she bobbled the 6 ball near the corner pocket. With 4 balls left on the table Michelle got down to the 8 ball and scratched in the side pocket while making the 8. Ball in hand, Kristie made the 9 ball and got her first win and also, winning the 2nd game with a score of 2 - 0 now. Michelle broke for the 3rd game and was able to run the table, but bobbled the 8 ball near the corner pocket. Kristie madet h e 8 ball and unfortunately set herself up pretty difficult for the 9 ball. She over cut it and this gave Michelle another crack at the table and the win making the score 2 - 1. With 2 balls left on the table Kristie won the 4th game. Soon after she was able to win the 5th game and kept a good lead of 4 - 1. For the 6th game with only 3 balls left on the table Kristie made the 8 ball and scratched. With ball in hand on the 9 for Michelle she won and made the score to 4 - 2. The 7th and 8th game was over in the blink of an eye with a score tied up to 4 and won by Michelle. With the 9th game and 4 balls left on the table Michelle left the

With lots of stress and many things going through both playersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; minds they took a short break and soon, got down to business. Kristie won the 10th game that put her on the hill, 6 - 4. The 11th game there were 3 balls left on the table and Kristie won with a final score of 7 - 4. Great job now only one more set to go! Again the ladies took breather to relax and collect their thoughts before starting the 2nd set. The 1st game got under way with Michelle winning the break. This game went back and forth with a lot of defensive shots, but when it came down to a 2 / 9 ball combo, Kristie got her first win with a score of 1 - 0. The 2nd game Michelle sent the 4 ball flying. The cue ball made contact with the 5 ball which sent the 9 ball all the way down the table and into the corner pocket, tying up the game 1 - 1. Beautiful shot Michelle! On the 3rd game Michelle had a 5 ball run out and a lead score of 2 - 1. The 4th game was quite tense since both players had a few attempts at trying to combo the 9 ball. They both went back and forth and eventually Kristie tied the game up with a 3 / 9 combo making the score 2 - 2. With 2 balls left on the table, Michelle won the 5th game and gaining a score lead of 3 - 2. The 6th game, Michelle had a long kick at the 2 and made it in the corner pocket. The game went back and forth, but with 3 balls left on the table Michelle got the win and continued on with winning the 7th. She now had a two point lead with the score at 5 - 2. On the 8th game, with only 2 balls left on the table Kristie banked the 8 ball and made the 9 ball in the corner pocket. Nicely done, Kristie! The score was now 5 - 3. Michelle broke and made 3 balls for the 9th game. Kristie played some great safeties, but with 5 balls left on the table, Michelle ran them out and with this putting her on the hill, gave her the lead score of 6 - 3. Kristie broke the 10th game. With a pool player dream of a beautiful spread of the table Michelle ran the table and gained the win with a final score of 7 - 3 by making a 7 / 9 combo. Excellent job Michelle! The weather was lousy, (until Sunday), but the facilities at Little Creek Casino and Events center were great! All of the comments I heard were terrific. The rooms were nice and the service very good. The wing most of the players stayed in was brand new. Gary Benson, Judy and the capable staff had the tournament running so smoothly, there just were not any problems. This had to be one, if not, the best regional the Pacific ACS has had, with many more in the future. There were some expected winners and also some unexpected upsets. The most outstanding of these was the 9-ball master singles match between Glenn Atwell, (on the point), and Bob Zack. Amazing! Glenn had made it to the hill, 8-5 in a race to 9. Glenn broke the 9th game and had no shot, and let Bob to the table, who promptly ran out. With the momentum going his way, Bob proceeded to finish things off with a 9-0 second set for the win. A great display of skill between two top players. Hats off to both! They are both winners and will continue to be for many years to come. There were many wonderful wins and some pretty heartbreaking losses for a few, but over-all I believe everyone really was satisfied. There was some grousing over players not being rated where they should be, but that will always be the case. It is never going to be to the complete satisfaction of everyone. A solid rating system just doesn’t exist and some actually encourage “sandbagging”. This is my personal belief, and I know many people have other ideas, but that’s life. This subject will be around when most of us are gone anyway. Everyone liked the idea of being closer with a better drive to the Little Creek facility. Freeway almost all the way. We all look forward to the next one. Watch this paper for information or ask your league operator. Qualifying for the fall will start in June, most places. Eight weeks in a sanctioned league is all it takes to qualify for not just regional PACS, but the National ACS tournament in Las Vegas. I just got back from the Blue Chip Casino where they held the Midwest only women’s tournament in 2007 and it is the second stop of the tournament (North Carolina is the first). In fact most of the regular top women players didn’t make it to the finals. I did meet up with GaYoung Kim “The Little Devil” who ended up taking 3rd place, behind us in the white is Vivian Villarreal “Texas Tornado”. Xiaoting Pan took 1st and Thornfeldt 2nd place. I was hoping for a rematch of the first tournament in North Xiaoting Pan Carolina where Ga-Young played Xiaoting and won but that didn’t happen. ESPN was there filming the semi-finals & finals for viewing in the near future, we will keep you posted when that airs. The casino entrance is unbelievable as you can’t tell that your going onto a boat as there is no ramp like most river boat casinos. You feel like you’re in the building the whole time, for those of you who have not been there you have to check this casino out it’s great! The weather was great which made the ride there enjoyable, also I was able to get gas for $2.37 unheard of in Chicago. For those of you who didn’t make it you have to go next year as this is a great tournament starting out with 64 of the top women players. What makes it nice is that the room is small and you get a great view from anywhere you sit and after the tournament the women players are very personable giving autographs on whatever you have and picture taking opportunities; they also have many items for sale: posters, shirts, cues, cue balls, etc. the most unique item I thought was Jeanette Lees autographed mini cue (about 36" when put together) with a case for $40.00. In Memory of ... Shannon W. Gibson (1963 - 2007)

March Monthl Monthlyy Results

Hard Times had a great turnout for the First full weekend of the Month of March tournaments. The One Pocket tournament had 24 players and unfortunately ran late and the top 4 players split $600 in prize money. The 9 Ball tournament got a little help from the Reno Bar Box players that were Saturday losers and headed West for the monthly Hard Times $500 added event. Rafael Martinez, Ernesto Dominguez, Damien Overton and Lance Salazar were some of the notables from the Reno event. There were a total of 54 players and Hard Times added $500 for a total of $1900 in prize money. Jeff Gregory took a hard fought 1st place by wining matches over Roger Estelle, Chick, James Williams, Billy Palmer, Warren Lew and the HOT SEAT match with Roberto Martinez. Mr. Martinez made the trip from the Bay Area with his buddies (Angel and Johnny Oliveres) to test his skills at this Monthly event. Sacramento, CA The Jointed Cue saw an amazing 114 players come to play in the 38th Annual Terry Stonier Memorial, March 17th & 18th. It took until 1 AM on Sunday morning to whittle the field down to the final 8. There were 32 places paid. The top 8 were:

10th Annual World Fingerpool Championship February 11, 2007 was a night in Fingerpool history at the New California Tavern in Marysville, WA. Sherm ”The Professor” Card went undefeated to win for an unprecedented 5th time in the sports short ten year history. Also in the historic vein - this was our first year with official sponsors! More history as “Gramma John” Boykin (past champion and second place finisher this year) had his third eight ball break! Not an easy task with your finger. From: Ed Pape Butte, MT The seventh annual Sweetheart, scotch doubles 8-ball tournament was held on 2/10/07. Teams came from Missoula, Livingston, Anaconda & Butte. The sweetheart tournament at Mr. Edâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s was started in 2000 and has proved to be one of the funnest tournaments of the year. Although shooters are serious they tend to be a little more relaxed playing as couples and loosen up and have more fun playing. 13 teams participated. This tournament was played Saturday & Sunday February 24th & 25th, 2007 at Eagles Club #326 - Downtown Bozeman, Montana. On a weekend when it snowed and then it snowed, we still had a starting field of 38 teams. What a great turn out! At one time we had 48 teams signed up. That was until it started snowing. The prize fund total for this tournament was $1,460. 56 8-ball players came to the February monthly tournament at the Cadillac Island Casino in Longview, WA. The Cadillac Island always guarantees a thousand add but this month Red Bull Energy drinks added another $200.00 to make it an even $1200.00. We paid high B player out of the money $100.00, that was split by Tim Haines from Longview and L.T. from Schooner Tavern. It was a stacked deck of great players from the Northwest. Eddie Carrido was unfortunate enough to draw Jesse Allred the first match and defeated him only to face off with Mike Zimmerman. He lost to Mike on a hill, hill missed eight ball, he defeated Jeff Baker, and then lost to Ivan Doty. Raul was out in two with losses to Glenn Atwell and Don Wirtaman. We brought back sixteen players for Sunday money matches. The eight on the winner side were Glenn Atwell vs. Steve Tune, Tim Tweedell vs. James Davee, Pat Shumacher vs. Todd Speakman, and Stan

Tourangeau vs. Mike Zimmerman. On the one loss side it was Troy Vanwinkle vs. Ivan Doty, Don Collins vs. Tim Desmarais, Ken Dodd vs. Ed Hobbs and Jesse Allred vs. Rick Hodge. It came down to James Davee playing Mike Zimmerman for the point and Pat Shumacher playing Glenn Atwell for third and fourth place. Str aight P ool traight Pool Tour nament ournament A record 20 players participated in the monthly Straight Pool Tournament at Samâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Billiards March 4th. The luck of the draw put Bob Zack, Willie Gin, Sam Rabito, Art May and Scott Robinson into one group, all players who have previously finished in the finals. In the February finals Bob beat Willie 50 to 5, but Willie beat Bob in this tournament 50 to 41, as well as the rest of the players in his group to advance to the Justin Lilje finals. In the finals Willie beat newcomer Chad Kurokawa, who fell prey to a questionable 3-foul penalty. Chad called himself for 3 fouls, misunderstanding that the fouls must be consecutive, but that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t clear until the game was over. The consecutive 3-foul penalty is a 1 point penalty for each foul plus an additional 15 point loss and the offending player must rebreak with the opening break rules applying. Nonetheless Willie beat Chad 50 to 8, so the confusion may not have altered the results. In the other bracket of the finals Justin Lilje beat Norton Johnson to face Willie. Justin went undefeated all day, including the game against Willie. He had the high run of 35 for the day, as well as the second highest run of 28. Although Wayne Milke, Scott & Stephanie Robinson came in from Goldendale, Washington, the player from the furthest away was Gilbert Bouc from Germany. Many thanks to everyone for participating.
