APA members who are currently playing on an active 8-Ball or 9-Ball team, and have attained at least ten League match scores during the past two years in their respective format(s), are eligible to participate in the National Singles Program. The culmination of the APA Singles Program is the APA National Singles Championships (NSC), which will be held at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas May 1st - 3rd. Malarkey’s Pool & Brew in Tacoma, WA was host to the 2008 APA NW Spring Regionals on February 23rd and 24th. The Regional event was for APA players that won a Local Qualifier Board between June 16th and November 30th of last year. There were 46 players qualified for 8-Ball and 36 for 9-Ball. 13th Annual Western BCA Regional 8-Ball Championships Tops $100,000 Payout; 1220 players Lincoln City Oregon is a beautiful place to visit - especially for 1,220 Western BCA pool players, arriving for the best regional pool tournament in the country! The blue waters of the Pacific Ocean matched the blue felt on 80 Diamond tournament tables, and Chinook Winds Casino and Resort once again was alive with pool players and their entourage. AT THE BEACH IN Players loved the Diamonds and the red circle cue balls. Fifteen separate tournaments were contested, with payouts topping $100,000 for the first time in the 13-year history of this event. Scotch Doubles started on Monday evening, Singles events started Wednesday morning and Team events started on Friday evening. By 10:30 PM Sunday night the last ball had been struck. Between Monday evening and Sunday night tens of thousands of games had been played and champions had emerged. Old-timers and newcomers alike were excited to be in such a great environment for pool. There was something for every skill level and many new players were caught examining the veterans in action, looking

for those skills that make pool such a great game. Where else can you see the old, the young, the handicapped, the rich and the poor all come together to compete against each other? Pool is a sport for the masses and Western BCA tournaments at Chinook Winds have become the ‘big show’ for pool in the Northwest. When an event gets to be the size of these Regional 8-Ball Championships, things change. The big change this year was INCOLN ITY using Diamond tables and red circle cue balls, but one other change was the filming of finals by OTBntV. All of the finals of the Masters’ events were filmed and are viewable on OTBnTV (www.otbntv.com) on the Western BCA Video Magazine. There are also photo galleries and some interviews with winners and other players. Check it out - Cheese did a fantastic job. OTBnTV also donated a Predator Poison Cue which was given away to Teresa Palmer, Cherry City League. Also, professional photographer Dave Schelske took numerous close-up photos and room shots at the championships. His photos can be viewed and purchased at www.westlinnstudios.com.

On April 19th to 20th 2008, Pool Playing Promotions will be hosting The Desert Shoot-Out Qualifier held at Alexander’s Sports Bar which is the 1st leg of three tournaments to be held in Phoenix, AZ. 13th Annual Tom Scott Memorial 8-Ball Tournament by: Johnny Siefke

Once again Libby was the place where pool players converged to test their skill over the weekend of March 15th. Men and women came from near and far for their shot at a share of the prize money. A total of 135 players in all were entered in the main event, 105 men and 30 women in their respective divisions. Over one hundred players from out of town made the trip to Libby. Friday night was the start of the show at the VFW, as mini tournaments were held throughout the evening, along with the calcutta Tony Etchechoury for the main event. Saturday saw the morning flights in both divisions get underway. Object of Saturday(s play, survive a double-elimination race to four contest to qualify for Sunday. The mens division would send eight players from the morning and eight from the evening flight to Sunday. The women(s division would

qualify four players from each. Sunday morning saw the beginning of a long day of good pool playing, as players advanced onward in the brackets and closer to the top money. Top honors in the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s division went to Christy Loehding, as she came back to defeat Sheila Moss two straight matches to avenge her earlier loss to Sheila. 1st $666 Christy Loehding 2nd $499 Sheila Moss 3rd $333 Carla Horner 4th $166 Nancy Cornell Mens division saw some great pool played by several along the way to the finals. The championship match pitted Wayne Boyd from the one loss side against Tony Etchechoury who was undefeated thus far. Wayne played very solid in the first match and defeated Tony by the score of 5-2. So it would all come down to a Christy Loehding final race to five. Tony came back to life and captured the title by the score of 5-2. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5/6

Total prize money paid out in this tournament, between the ninitournaments on Friday evening, the Sheila Moss main event, the second chance tournament on Sunday and the calcutta exceeded $10,300.00. cue ball. I won’t reveal the way I like until the end of the column, so stop reading now if you want to find your own way first. In Shot B the challenge is to cut the object ball straight into the pocket. Both the cue ball and the object ball are even with the first diamonds from the corner pocket. The shot looks pretty tough when you’re down on it, but a not-so-hard, smooth stroke will do it. With the correct speed, if the cue ball misses the object ball, it will go a total of three table lengths. Most players start out hitting the shot too hard. This is the sort of shot you may need to warm up to. Start with an easier shot — put the cue ball at A. If you can make it three times in a row from there, move to B, and so on, until you get to the diagrammed position. If you have too much trouble even with position A, move the cue ball out to the line and see how thin a shot you can achieve. Shot B is a good one for your snooker-like stance. See if getting your chin almost on the cue stick, or even rubbing on the cue stick improves your accuracy. OK, time for the spoiler. In Shot A the way that works best is to play with some left english and a hair of draw and hit the object ball nearly full. Don’t hit the ball too hard or the english won’t take as well. This is a

One of the advantages of going to m a j o r tournaments is that in the times between matches you get to swap shots with other “shot collectors.” Here are two Bob Jewett tough shots that were discussed at the recent Derby City Classic that can be used for practice or as challenge shots. In Shot A, the goal is to bank the object ball cross-side. The problem is that there is an almost sure kiss in the shot. The setup is critical but pretty easy. The object ball is even with the diamond closest to the side pocket and one ballspace off the cushion. The cue ball is on the spot. (If the spot is pitted, move the cue ball towards the object ball a little or use the other end of the table. Your first problem is to decide whether you want to try to “cross” the ball, which means to hit it on the left side and make the cue ball cross the path of the ball and get out of the way before the object ball comes off the rail. The other way is to try to “stiff” or “pinch” the object ball. Usually this is done by shooting

A Post From ... I just got off the phone with Bill Schick who gave me the following information about this cue and it’s current condition. Don Wagner and Bill Schick were friends for more than 30 years. This friendship started before Bill even started making cues. According to Mr. Schick, him and Don purchased cues from Frank Paradise together in 1965, and the cue pictured throughout this post was the cue that Don purchased at that time. When their cues were ready for pick-up they went down to Franks shop and picked up their cues together. While Don loved his cue in all respects, Bill was not as happy with his. At the time Bill had purchased a lower end Paradise, and Don had opted for a High End Fancy model. Now according Bill this incident was greatly responsible for his desire to build cues. Now when Bill was telling this, all I could say is WOW this exchange changed history, and it created one of the most highly respected cue makers in this country today, who still builds his cues by hand with no CNC Machinery. The cue pictured here in this thread was part of that heritage, and this pedigree is very hard if not impossible to top. According to Bill this cue was a Special Paradise Model “D” Black Zephyr due to the extra inlays and work, and the point construction was done by Paradise not, Burton Spain. Bill told me that he had gone to Franks shop on a number of occasions, and actually watched Points being milled in Franks shop, and that the points in this cue were made in Franks shop. All the Mother Pearl inlays in this cue were part of the original construction with the exception of the Boxed Pearl inlays that were inlay-ed when the cue was refinished by Bill Schick. One inlay says Wagner after the cues owner, and the other says Holdem who was Don’s Pit Bull Dog, and according Bill, this dog kinda smiled and had a wounderful disposition for this type of dog. Classic cues made a comment

that the butt of the cue including the butt cap appeared to have been replaced. According to Bill around 1970, Don decided that he wanted weight added to the cue. The cue was taken to Danny Jane’s and Bill Stroud at Joss custom Cues where weight was added, the Butt cap was replaced, and the words NO-TE-APRES were added under the window above Franks trade mark. The NO-TE-APES name came from the fact that Don was a retired Air Force Officer. One day while Don and Bill were looking at some photo’s of old planes from WWII they saw a plane from the Flying Tiger Squadron with this name painted on the planes nose. The words mean HAVE-NOFEAR and due to his profession and being a Pool Player that name was chosen for that cue. KV at Classic cues also said that he thought the cue should have fancy inlays in the butt like the Forearm. However, according to Bill Schick the cue did not ever have a fancy butt, and he was there when the cue was picked up from Frank. The only modifications from the time the cue left Franks shop are those listed above. Many thanks to Bill Schick, whose memory is fantastic, and who was gracious enough to spend an hour with me talking on the phone this morning about this cue and his very good friend “CAPP”. To all that have posted thanks very much, it has been a pleasure sharing this information with the forum. GREAT FALLS, MONTANA March 28, 29, 30, 2008 The owners of the 8 Ball In, treated their customers, pool players and those who were there for the tournament this weekend to a spectacular trick shot exhibition by none other than Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman, World Champion and World Class Entertainer. Dr. Cue astounded a standing room only crowd. OTBnTV was there to capture Dr. Cue’s show. The tournament started on Saturday with 58 men and 17 women which Stephanie Crawford was less than anticipated perhaps due to the weather or the high gasoline prices. This did not diminish the quality of players as well as their play that lasted throughout Saturday and well into the night. The race was to 9 on both sides for both men and women. The players took advantage of the 8 Ball In’s accommodations with a full bar, and full kitchen and a wait staff second to none. The second set was a reversal, Stephanie played near flawless 9-Ball while taking advantage of Phyllis’ missed shots and mistakes to pull out the double elimination win. The men’s finals saw Edwin Montal jump out to a lead that he never relinquished. Tyler Edey who won last year’s 9-Ball event was unable to overtake Edwin’s superb playing and finished second. The Soundview Bar & Grill and P.C.’s Pub held the Women’s Everett Invitational tournament Feb. 23rd & 24th. This was a 4 person team event with 7 teams comprised of some of WA and B.C.’s strongest women players all vying for their share of the prize pool which was sweetened by $500 by the host bars. Playing a Round Robin seemed to be the best format for everyone involved and to truly determine “THE BEST”.

In the eight years that the North vs. South Cactus Cup Challenge has been played, never before has there been a finish like what took place during this years challenge. The 2008 Cup started at Main Street Billiards in Tucson on Sunday, March 2nd. The South squad jumped to an early lead when their (10) rated players, Dave Capone & Kevin Peterson, both won over the North's Tyson Cole & Tres Kane. Next up in Tucson were the (6) rated players. The North's Jodie Villegas & Lance Smyth both won over the South's Abby Bentley & Chris Amadori to even the score at 2-2. The (7) rated players were next. The North's Jim Pennington defeated Nicky Hayashi (S) while the South's John Wells defeated the North's Mark Nelson. The score now stood at 3-3 until the South won the Scotch Doubles match between the (7's) to take a 4-3 lead. From this point forward the South dominated by winning every match played the rest of the day. The (8's) and the (9's) from the South, Tim Christopher, Jim Bentley, Ricardo Camarena, and Andy Kucher all won creating a huge 8-3 lead after leg #1. The North was in the biggest hole they had ever experienced in the eight years of the Challenge. Leg #2 would take place the following Sunday on the North's home court at Alexander's. The North would definitely have their work cut out for them on March 9th. On March 9th, the North started leg #2 by playing their six rated players who had both won the previous week in Tucson. Both North 6's won again. Jodie Villegas & Lance Smyth defeated the South's Chris Amadori & Russ Hopkins. These two North wins narrowed the overall gap MON - FRI: 2PM - 2AM SAT & SUN: NOON - 2AM

2008 Cactus Cup to 8-5. The North matched up the 10's next. Tyson Cole (N) lost to the South's Kevin Peterson while the North's Tres Kane fought back from a huge hole in his match against Dave Capone to keep the South's lead to just three points, 9-6. The South 10's then defeated the North's 10's in scotch doubles to take a 10-6 lead. At this point it did not look real good for the North team. With the North in trouble and facing must wins to stay alive, the North's Bernie Store and Susan Williams both won over the South's Olivia Jackson and Tim C h r i s t o p h e r. These two huge North wins brought the North back with-in two points. The over-all score now stood at 10-8, South. The North put their 9's up next. Pete Gresh Sr. &

would once again give the South the 2008 Cup. Sure enough the North pulled it out and the Cup was still up for grabs. The overall score at this point was 11-10 South. The only rating left to play in the 2nd and last leg of the challenge were the seven rated players. The South's John Wells defeated the North's Tony Spade to give the South a two point lead at 1210. The other (7's) match was the North's Sara Miller playing the South's Nicky Hayashi. A win by Nicky in this match would once again close the North out. It did not happen. Nicky got on the hill but Sara battled back and won the match hill/ hill. That win kept the North alive again. The over all score now stood 12-11 South. The math was simple from here. If the South won the scotch match between the 7's, the 2008 Cup would be theirs for only the second time in eight years. If the North could win this match, the overall score would be tied and the tie breaker would have to be played. In a nail biter, the North fell behind again 6-4 in the race to seven. The South was one game away from the Cup while the North needed three games to force the tie. Sure enough Sara and Tony fought back to even the match hill/hill then won the match when Tony snapped the nine on the hill/hill game to finally, after two weeks of play, get the North even overall at 12-12. This was the first time in eight years that the Challenge ended in a tie. As decided years ago by the North captain Ron Merseal and the South

Brandon Butler would be playing the South's Ricardo Camarena & Andy Kucher. Brandon lost to Ricardo to increase the South lead to three points, 11-8. Pete fell behind in his match to Andy. A loss by Pete would have given the South a four point lead and the North would have been mathematically eliminated. Pete, however, came back and won over Andy hill/hill. And no, I’m not referring to “teaching an old dog new tricks.” That’s a different article. About three years ago, I was teaching Vegas, my white lab, to “wave” on command. Following the guidance of a book full of doggy tricks I had purchased, I could sort of get him to do it. He struggled a bit, gave me that tilted-head look of confusion, and just tried to get the treat from my hand. We worked on it for about 45 minutes and I just let him go play. The next evening, I called him over, had him sit in front of me, and along with the waving hand gesture, I said, “wave.” Well, low and behold, on his very first attempt, he was waving. Without any assistance from me at all, he had remembered everything we Samm Diep worked on and was waving on his own. Nowadays, all I have to do is make the hand gesture and a little white paw comes creeping up. Not to compare us with dogs, but I couldn’t help noticing an uncanny parallel after a difficult practice session the other day. I’d recently been struggling with my stroke hand inadvertently inching slightly back on my cue whenever my adrenaline starts pumping. I don’t always notice it when it’s happening. I just notice something feels a little off and I miss the shot. On Monday afternoon, I had a three hour practice session where, before every single shot, I checked my perpendicular to make sure my hand was in the correct spot. Initially, it felt so awkward, like I was way too far forward. I didn’t care. I forced myself to shoot it anyway. Most of the time, I would make the shot. Sometimes, I was so flustered I would screw something else up. I struggled. Admittedly, I was frustrated. I felt so inconsistent and wasn’t even sure if I was making any progress at all. I finished my practice feeling a bit deflated and left with my tail between my legs. On Tuesday night, I screwed my cues together, determined to get to the bottom of this. As usual, I threw some balls out and just stroked some shots in to warm up; with some big powerful strokes. It was like a miracle. Everything I was forcing myself to so consciously do the day before was all happening on its own. I could see the shots. My stance and stroke hand all fell right into place. It was effortless. I was thrilled. I had made progress. Forcing myself to the brink of madness the day before wasn’t all for nothing. Like Vegas, I had successfully learned a new trick. Final Standings Women’s State Eight Ball Doubles Championships This tournament was played Saturday and Sunday February 23rd and 24th, 2008 at Eagles Club #326 - Downtown Bozeman, Montana. What a great turn out we had with 39 teams coming from around the state. I would like to note that we did have players from as far away as Cut Bank, Billings, Anaconda, Whitehall, Butte, Helena, Livingston, Emigrant and Great Falls. Thank you for coming so far. On March 17th, Malarkey’s Pool & Brew in Tacoma, WA held its 1st annual St Patricks Day Mixed Scotch Doubles Tournament. Entry was $10 per team and the House added 100%. Format was 8 Ball, double elimination, race to 2. With fun being the primary objective, twelve teams battled it out for a part of the $240 prize money. Local favorites, Clara Silvas and Don Wirtaman whipped through the upper part of the tournament bracket to play against the local UNfavorites, the bar owners, Michelle Barkdoll and Clark Smith for the Point. Michelle & Clark won the match with help from those ever so wonderful ‘rolls’. Stacy Medina and Steve Clardy lost their first match against Jasmine Nephew and Frank Martinez sending them to the B side. Winning their next five matches, Stacy & Steve met up against Clara & Don. The match going hill to hill, Stacy and Steve were victorious once again. Stacy and Steve would now have to play Michelle and Clark for ‘all the cheese on mars’. $25 Charge for Second Piece of Luggage Effective May 5th, 2008, United Airlines and US Airways will begin charging domestic passengers an additional $25 to check a second piece of luggage. Exceptions to this rule: if you are flying first class or are part of their mostfrequent-flier programs. This charge is anticipated to generate an additional $75 to 100 million in revenue and cost savings each year. These are the only two airlines that have currently jumped on the bandwagon thus far but we’ll just have to see who follows. This comes as a bad time for pool players as it’s just before Nationals in Vegas. What does this mean for pool players? Well, if you don’t already own one, you may want to consider investing in a larger piece of luggage that is long enough to carry your pool cues and clothes altogether. Caution, however, most airlines have a 50 pound weight limit and it’s really easy to exceed that with all the extra room and weight from our cues/case. K IDS THE WINNERS Combining opportunities to challenge top pros with a pool raffle put $2,300 in the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) coffers at last week’s Hopkins Super Billiards Expo. The fundraiser was made possible by the generous donation by Brunswick Billiards for the pool table raffle, a booth courtesy of Expo producers Dawn & Allen Hopkins, and pro players who provided exciting challenge matches. Professional billiard players donating their time to assist in the charity challenge were: Artistic Pool Masters Championship participants Andy Segal, Bruce Barthelette and Tim Chin; WPBA Pro Players: Ga Young Kim and Allison Fisher; and UPA Pro Players: Mika Immonen, Mike Jackson, Raj Hundal and Tim Hill. Several volunteers assisted BEF to make this a successful fundraiser: Bob Hess, Martyne Backman and Roger Gross. The Brunswick pool table was won by Pam Burns of Conowingo, MD. Ms. Burns is ecstatic about the opportunity to play pool at home with her 15 year old son, Dustin Majerowicz. Dustin will be practicing and intends to qualify for the 2008 BEF Junior National 9- Ball Championships which will be held at the University of Arizona, Tucson this summer. The BEF would like to wholeheartedly thank everyone whose donations, time and commitment help to build youth billiard programs and support the future of our sport.

On the one hand were Bobby Campbell and Molly Oliver of 1st Place Women’s Master Singles Western Washington BCA Pool Jackie Fitchner League, young, talented, fearless, and relatively “new” to Western BCA competition. On the other hand were Guy and Robbin Iredale out of Juan de Fuca Pool League, long-time pool players and no strangers to WBCA regional tournaments. The final was actually the second meeting of these two pairs as they played each other in the hill match of the winner’s side earlier in the tournament. That meeting sent the veterans into the loser’s side of the bracket, hoping to get another shot at the new kids. After waiting until the loser’s side of the bracket caught up with them, the Iredales played a very tough couple (Ernie Omori and Vicki Knutson of Sno-King BCA Pool League who finished 3rd) and got their wish for a replay. The final match was hard fought and played with skill and strategy. After an early exit from last year’s Men’s Master Singles, Glenn Atwell returned as the 8-Ball champion for the fifth time. Glenn beat last year’s champion, Dan Louie, in a classic match-up. In the finals Dan jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but missed a tough masse on the 8-ball when he came up short on shape in a nice run in the 5th game. That let Glenn get back in the match, and he never looked back as he ran out several times, winning the match 7-3. Teammates Jackie Fitchner, Cindy Doty and Liz Cole finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Women’s Master Singles, and with the talented Mary Hopkin and Andrea Saenz-Maes added to the mix, there was little doubt this team would be a force. But the Pond Sharks team gave them a battle, with Josie LeRoy as the only veteran Master, up-and-coming Eve Stockstill and Faye Fang, who finished 1st and 4th respectively in the Women’s Open Singles, and Brenda Bartholomew and Anna Busley rounding out the team. The road wasn’t easy but the final match against PC’s #1 went as they hoped. PC’s #1 with brothers J. Keith and Brian Johnson, Miguel Morfin, Adam Stromberg and Steve Kielow from the Seattle area had a good run to finish second. Two Tacoma teams, Q’s Cruisers and Schooner Predators finished 3rd and 4th. Tuesday night was mini-tournament heaven, with over 50 separate tournaments run by Stacy and Alex. Also on Tuesday night, the popular 10-ball ring games were held. In the Master’s ring game, Jeff Jerome did it again by taking the top prize over 12 other players. Each player put in $100 and play started on 3 tables. By the time the players were whittled down to one table 6 players remained, Jim Conway, Jeff Jerome, Ivan Doty, Robert Colby, Todd Speakman and Matt Bryan. Jeff got down to his last chip but turned it around to pocket $900, while Ivan took $400 for 2nd. In the Open ring game, seven players put up their $100, and Miguel Morfin took 1st, good for $500, with Jeff Coates winning $200 for 2nd. On Sunday night, another ring game - bank pool - started, and many think it may be a future event. Chinook Winds Casino is a great place to have this event since there is so much to do in Lincoln City. The beach was great as always and Lincoln City has many nice places to eat, shop and rest between matches. Chinook Winds opened the door wide to make everyone feel welcome. Veteran Master player Ted Woodward gave up playing in the tournament to help Gary keep the tournament flowing. Thanks, Ted! The tighter corner pockets on the Diamond tables added time to some of the matches and that caused some very late matches almost every night. Diamond Promotions and Ric Jones provided 80 tables in great condition and they were in full use. Chinook Winds Casino Resort added $10,000 to the event. It was a pleasure to work with the Chinook Winds crew including Bob, Keith, Kelli, Melissa and Belinda. BCAPL added $2,300, and thanks goes out to the people at the top who make it happen, Mark Griffin, David Vandenberghe (who was sighted at Lincoln City) and Bill and Glenna Stock. Its high quality and professional look added greatly to raise the awareness of the Western BCA and our tournaments. It was Easter Sunday and the weather was really nasty, so it was like pulling teeth to get anyone interested in participating. at the Las Vegas Cue Club The thirtyseventh stop of the 2007/2008 Pechauer All American Tour (produced by the American CueSports Alliance – ACS) was hosted at Las Vegas Cue Club in Las Vegas, NV, on Saturday, March 1. The $500 added event drew nineteen players in a double-elimination 8-ball format on 7-foot bar boxes. Past champion Gary Onomura (Las Vegas, NV) again took the undefeated path to the finals. In the A-side finals, Onomura (rated a “5” on a regional handicap system used) slipped by Rick White [5] (Las Vegas, NV) 5-3. Earlier in the A-bracket semi-finals, Onomura defeated Fred Delacruz [4] (Las Vegas, NV) 5-1, while White outpointed Fred Boggs [5] (Las Vegas, NV) 5-4. In the B-side quarterfinals Jimmy Moore and Fred Boggs eliminated at 5th place Fred Delacruz 5-3 and Henry Nogiec [5] (Las Vegas, NV) 5-3 and 5-4 respectively. In the semifinals, Moore ousted Boggs at 4th place by a score of 5-4. The B-side finals showcased Rick White being eliminated by Jimmy Moore 5-3. The tourney finals featured undefeated Gary Onomura versus streaking Jimmy Moore, but Onomura was up to the task, winning the title 5-3 in the first set!
