May The Force Not Be With You

A friend of mine once told me that the most important word in the English language is the word, let. At the time, I thought he was nuts! Come on, LET? But then as time went on, I came to realize that my friend had something there. As I matured, I became acutely aware that I had little control over the outcome of anything that happened in my life. The more I tried to force things to go my way, the more they seemed to go the other way. It wasn’t until I started letting situations run their natural course that I started to see better results. Roger Long I guess I had finally realized that I was never fully in control of any given situation and that gentle persuasion would always be the limit of my influence. Now, years later, I have come to realize that this principle can, and should, be applied to pool. We should realize that we simply cannot force an outcome to a game. Oh sure, we can “bear down,” we can “focus,” we can “concentrate,” we can “catch a gear,” we can “freewheel,” or we can even “kick it up a notch;” but we still can’t force the elements to cooperate with us, or force our opponents to give up. If we understand this truth and just let each match run its course, we will go a long way towards lowering our blood pressure and enjoying the game more. There is another instance of force that is closely related to the one I just mentioned, however this one is more common. It is the one where we try to “force” a shot. Now I’m not talking about force-follow and force-draw shots where it is necessary to combine maximum stroke speed with a long follow through in order to move the cue ball around the table; I’m talking about ordinary shots where very little force is required, but we end up adding extra force, anyway. Why do we do that? The reason we try to force shots that shouldn’t be forced is because we allow panic to take over in pressure situations. We tense up and try to make something good happen, but instead, it usually turns out bad. In pool slang, it’s called “choking.” Muscle tension pulls the cue off of its intended line of aim, and we miss the shot by two diamonds! It’s a pretty well known fact that muscle tension can hinder physical performance. Just watch professional golfers on TV. Do they look all tense as they tee off and drive the ball over 200 yards? No, they don’t. They are confident and relaxed. They know that the secret to driving the ball long distances is not in muscle power, it’s in the usage of proper technique. They must let their bodies do what they have trained them to do. I know this must sound like an over simplification of a very complex matter. I’m sure many of you are wondering how you can just relax and let things happen as they may. The answer to that is to just keep practicing, and pretty soon confidence will take over and erase the tension. But even if you don’t have the time or inclination to practice, just try adopting this mental attitude the next time you play. I’m sure you’ll get better results if you stop trying to force the issue.

A Pool Player’s Guide to Savvy Air Travel

Tournament season is in full force and Vegas Nationals are just around the corner. With the soaring prices of fuel these days, more and more people are choosing to fly to events instead of drive. When flying, here are some useful tips for hassle-free traveling: As pool players, it’s safe to assume that if you’re flying to a tournament with your cues, you will be checking a bag, no questions. The days of carrying our cues on the plane are behind us. Samm Diep To make sure your cues arrive where you do, always get to the airport AT LEAST one hour prior to boarding. Depending on the airport, you may want to arrive even earlier. Checking in ♦ Most airlines currently charge a $15 fee to check your first bag and an additional $25 fee for the second. If you haven’t already, you may want to invest in an oversized duffle that will fit both your cues and clothes together. [see SammsPocket.com for an assortment] ♦ Make sure none of your bags are over 50 pounds. There’s typically a charge for that too. ♦ If you’re connecting, confirm that your bags are checked in all the way to your final destination. ♦ Check in online whenever possible. Just about every airline offers online check-in within 24 hours before your flight time. Even if you don’t have a printer, you can usually (re)print your boarding pass when you arrive at the ticket counter to drop off your bag(s). ♦ Have your photo ID out of your purse/wallet from the time you arrive at the airport until after you get through security. ♦ If you checked in online, you still want to (re)confirm the departing gate number with the ticket agent after checking your bag(s). ♦ Once you’ve checked your bag(s) in and they’re confirmed on the flight – Now, RELAX… You should still try to get to your gate on time, but don’t panic if the security line is a mile long. It’s unlikely that the plane will take off with your bags on board without you. They’ll generally page you until you get to the gate. Security ♦ Try to wear comfortable, slip on shoes that are easy to remove. Please wear socks. ♦ Have your boarding pass and ID out and ready when entering the security line. (continued on page 26)

WASHINGTON REGIONAL 8-BALL CLASSIC 9-BALL SHOOTOUT

APA members who are currently playing on an active 8-Ball or 9-Ball team, and have attained at least ten League match scores during the past two years in their respective format(s), are eligible to participate in the National Singles Program. At the local level, APA members compete on a Local Qualifier Board consisting of four to eight members with one player advancing on to regional competition. The culmination of the APA Singles Program is the APA National Singles Championships (NSC), which will be held at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas April 30 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; May 2, 2009. This event consists of two individual National Singles championships: 8 Ball Classic and 9-Ball Shootout. Winners of the Regional event will receive lodging and airfare allowance to the NSC to vie for the $15,000 first place cash & prizes, in their respective tier bracket, for the 8-Ball Classic ($10,000 first place cash & prizes 9-Ball Shootout). Malarkeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pool & Brew in Tacoma, WA was host to the 2009 APA Washington Regional on February 28th and March 1st. The Regional event was for APA players that won a Local Qualifier Board between June 16th and November 30th of last year. There were 74 players qualified for 8-Ball and 54 for 9-Ball. Some participants came from as far away as Montana to compete.

The four tiers for competition in the 8-Ball Classic are: Blue Tier (skill level 2&3) Yellow Tier (skill level 4) Red Tier (skill level 5) Purple Tier (skill level 6&7) Olga Azarova (SL3) from Seattle defeated her first three opponents, Robert Lee 2-0, Chynena Ayers 2-0 and Navid Azimi 2-1 to bringing her to win the point. For her finals match, she played Larry Prince (SL3) from Tacoma. Their games went hill/hill; however, Olga pulled out the last game to win the Blue Tier and become the first NSC competitor. The Yellow Tier ended up with Marlon Jones from Bellevue playing against Gerald Maki from Lakewood. Unlike Gerald, Marlon took the scenic route when losing his second match to Heidi Royer of Spokane. Winning 3-0 against Bryan Belcher and 3-1 alongside Clodagh Lancaster, he continued his streak defeating Gerald in the finals match 3-0. The Red Tier had 27 participants; therefore, two boards were run with a player from each advancing to the Singles Championship. The first board was won by Pai Hirasuna from Bothell who played Jesse Crockett from Spokane in the finals. Both gentlemen lost their first match, but regrouped

to win their next two, thus seating them to play each other. With the finals match at hill/hill, Pai pulled out the last game to win. The second board ended up with Billy Swanson from Spokane playing against Kenny Inglet from Des Moines. Billy didn’t waste any time this tournament. With a bye the first round, he won the next four matches defeating Carl Haller 4-3, Troy Mower 4-2, again Carl Haller 4-0 and, in the finals match, Kenny 4-1. Since the Purple Tier had 26 participants, they too would have two tournament boards, with a winner from each. The first victory went to Tom Archer (SL7) of Redmond. Unlike Tom’s finals match opponent, Joe Walker (SL6) of Tacoma, he lost his first match only to battle his way through the B side and win the match against Joe 5-3. The second board triumph went to Jon Esselstrom (SL7) of Bellevue. On a roll, winning 5-4 against Lee Noble, 5-1 with Jack Harrington, and 5-4 with Lee again, this brought him to the final match to play against Pru Peltier (SL7) from Bellevue. Pru played a great tournament winning his first four match’s 5-3, 5-1, 5-0, 5-0 but Jon playing strong won their match 5-0. The three tiers for competition in the 9-Ball Shootout are: Green Tier (skill level 1,2&3) White Tier (skill level 4&5) Black Tier (skill level 6,7,8&9) Criegh Dumo (SL9) of Bonney Lake took no mercy through the Black Tier. He defeated Frank Rocha (SL9) 75-53, Lee Noble (SL9) 75-30, Daniel Sie (SL8) 75-40, JD Hardy (SL8) 75-28 bringing him to the finals match against Scott Carroll (SL7) of Redmond. Still victory struck, Dumo beat Scott 75-37. The White Tier having 26 participants would be another bracket to have two boards with a winner on each. Losing his first match 16-31 to David Fitzsimmons (SL4), Troy Mower (SL5) of Yelm worked his way through the B side to defeat HB Harwood (SL4) 31-22, then David (who beat him round one) 31-23 and Chris Burdick (SL5) 31-25. The finals match was really close with Dale Floyd (SL4) of Spokane needing four points to win; however, Troy pulled it to 38 thus earning his entry into the Singles Championship. The second White Tier board was taken by Jeff Rice (SL5) of Hobart. Both Jeff and his opponent, Debie Leelyn (SL5) Tacoma, stayed on the A side of the tournament the entire time, only to meet one another in the end. In this finals match, Jeff’s opponent was five points shy of taking the win from him.

Last but not least, is the Green Tier winner, Clodagh Lancaster (SL4) of Redmond. Clodagh unlike her finals match opponent, Camille Ganir (SL2) of Bellevue, lost her second match against Karen Dhaliwal (SL3) 25-11. She then fought her way through the B side defeating Brian Trobaugh (SL4) 25-22 and Mona Davis (SL3) 25-8. With Clodagh’s last win, this brought her skill level from a 3 to a 4. In the finals match, Camille needed to get to 19 points before Clodagh reached 31. Even as a 4, Clodagh pulled out the win 31-8 giving her the last slot from this Regional event to the National Singles Championship. Best of luck to the ten players qualified from this event. Viva Las Vegas. Normally a ‘sportsmanship award’ at a Regional Event is not prearranged; however, due to a circumstance I feel one should be awarded. On the B side of the Red Tier 8-Ball Classic Board and hill/hill with this opponent, Dennis Piepel of Spokane committed a foul. His opponent or anyone watching the match did not notice this. Being a true sportsman, Dennis brought this error to his opponent’s attention. With ball-in-hand, his opponent won the game and match. Most individuals would not have brought a foul to someone’s attention in a critical game situation; I have to think if I would have ☺ Way to go, it’s nice to know that the ‘gentlemen’s’ game is still around with some and I hope good things come in your direction! ACS Nationals to host 2009 Diamond World Summit of Pool The American CueSports Alliance (ACS) is excited to announce its hosting of the $20,000-added “Diamond World Summit of Pool” pro 9-ball championship during the ACS Nationals at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Davenport and Hanks Win

On Saturday and Sunday, March 21-22, 2009, American Legion Post #129 in Oak Harbor, WA, hosted its annual Partners 8-Ball Tournament, awarding $3,000 in prize money.The tournament was played on 5 - 4x8 tables, all located at the American Legion Hall. As experienced last month in the Teams 8-Ball tournament, having all the play at the Legion, instead of farming matches out to other taverns around town like we used to do, made the entire tournament run much more smoothly, and also meant a decent increase to the Legion Post’s profitability. 25 out of the 28 teams that signed up, for a total of 50 players, showed up from as far south as Olympia, 1st: Steve Hanks (Sedra-Wooley) & Jim Davenport (Mt. Vernon) WA, and as far north as British Columbia. This was one team less than turned out at the same time last year, and 6 places were paid! Once again, $500 was added, instead of the $200 previously historically added, to the prize fund by the Legion. 1st Place was captured by Jim Davenport (Mt. Ve r n o n ) a n d Steve Hanks (Sedro-Woolley). The father and son team of Chuck Hassler (Oak Harbor) and Ben Hassler (Bellingham) hung on for 2nd Place. 3rd Place went to Hans Nendsa 2nd: Chuck Hassler (Oak Harbor) & Ben Hassler (Bellingham) (Mission, B.C.) and Justin Barnes (Oak Harbor). Into 4th Place slid Randy Click (Anacortes) and Don Bower (Oak Harbor). Tieing for 5th and 6th Places were Robert Colby (Olympia) and Steve “Bu ste r” Graham (Mt. Ve r n o n ) a l o n g with Cody Clark (Everett) and Tony Chritten (SedroWoolley). Our gratitude goes to Chuck Hassler, who organized the tournament, and to the staff at the 3rd: Justin Barnes (Oak Harbor) & Hans Nendsa (Mission, B.C.) American Legion, most of which consisted of volunteers, for its wonderful support. Again, the kitchen ran full-fare from Friday evening through Sunday evening and the staff received many compliments from the tournament participants for the attentive and fast service. And finally, our sincerest gratitude goes out to all of the players who took the time out of otherwise busy lives to come and visit our fair village. Pleasant Hill, CA The Diablo valley women’s league started their series of promoting women’s tournaments last Feb. 15th at Farrington’s bar in pleasant hill. With excellent turnout 22 women showed up to the event and it ran for the whole afternoon until evening time. Stacy Wilson had an excellent afternoon getting to the catbird undefeated while new members of the league, sisters Denise and Darnell Domingo’s worked their way through the loser brackets to finally Denise Domingo # 1 and Stacie Wilson # 2 get a chance to play for the catbird against Stacy. Let me take a moment to welcome our new members who have joined Kristen’s team and are making their presence felt around the league. They play out of Emeryville and both and excellent players and just love to play pool and ‘party’”. ‘Denise Domingo dominated the action against Stacy Wilson by playing excellent pool and coming back from the looser bracket to take the top prize. Congratulation to all the women that showed up to shoot. Dvpool offered pizza to the league members; the event was a total success. March 21, 2009-The Colorado Cue Club welcomed 31 players for the first major event of this year’s “Springboard to the Nationals”. Colorado’s best player showed up again. Mark Haddad, after losing to eight ball wizard Jeff Crawford, went on a rampage in the one loss side winning all his sets handily and earning a rematch with Jeff in the one set race to 9 finals. Mark would get his revenge as he becomes the forth winner of the Cue Club’s “Pot O’ Gold”. Mar 7, 2009 - The Colorado Cue Club hosted the first Colorado All Stars 10-Ball Invitational and we were very happy to welcome 41 players from the list of invitees. The matches were fierce with the high caliber of players fighting it out for a share of the $2,100+ purse. The game was 10-Ball. Races to 7, alternate break, rack your own and the 10 does not count on the break in the bottom two pockets. The pre-tourney favorite had to be Mark Haddad and he didn’t disappoint. Mark made his way to the finals without a loss. One of his victims was Greg Way who turned around winning 3 in a row for a rematch with Mark in the finals. Mark went on to take it down though as many would have predicted. Aiming With Your Bridge Hand

What part of your body do you aim with? You might say your eye, but your bridge is actually more important in the process than what you see. World Champion Irving Crane had an aiming demo he did in exhibitions. He would set up a spot shot -- object ball on the foot spot and the cue ball behind the head string -- using a good firm bridge and a solid stance. Before he shot, he would look completely away from the shot, take the stick out of Bob Jewett his bridge, point it off towards the audience, and then without looking back at the cue ball, he would put the cue back in his bridge and shoot the shot. He didn’t have to see the shot to aim. The point I’m making is that if your bridge is in the right place, shots are easy -- you can shoot them blindfolded. The other side of this is that if your bridge is in the wrong place, it will be very hard for you to make anything. You aim with your bridge. I’ve seen lots of beginners who during aiming will realize they are hitting the object ball too much to one side. They try to correct the error without moving their bridge hand by swinging the back of the stick over so it’s pointed along the right line. This causes several problems, including getting side spin on the cue ball that’s not really necessary. What they should do is move their brige hand to the appropriate side and make sure the stick is lined up through the center of the cue ball. Changing your aim really consists of moving your bridge hand the right amount. It’s remarkable how many players don’t realize this fact that’s obvious once it’s pointed out. This idea is probably aleady at work in your aiming routine, but if you find unwanted side spin on the cue ball on lots of shots, you should check on how you get the stick in position for the shot. After moving your bridge hand, do you always recenter on the cue ball?

There is one particular shot where the idea of aiming with the bridge hand is particularly helpful: the break shot. For smash breaks, you need to be pretty accurate on the hit, but usually your stance is higher to get more power and your mechanics are stretched to the limit of stability. Aim with your bridge. Suppose you are breaking from the side rail, which is a popular break at nine ball and sometimes used at eight ball. Aim at the head ball with your normal best aiming stance, which for most people is with the chin near the cue. Use the type of rail bridge which brings your thumb along side the cue stick and on the left side of the stick for right-handed players. Straighten your thumb a little so that your thumbnail is pressed against the shaft of the cue stick, and loop your index finger over the top of stick. The thumb, if held firmly in place after your careful aiming, will provide precise aim for the break shot. As long as you planted your thumb solidly on the cushion, you can raise up to break stance and still have perfect aim. On the power stroke, pay most attention to bringing the cue stick straight through the center of the cue ball; there is no need to look at the object ball. The diagram shows the break position. The “thumbnail guide” bridge will also work if you are breaking from the middle of the table, but the cue ball will have to be close to the head cushion. One other suggestion for the break shot: Aiming as above should improve the accuracy of your hit on the head ball, and you should nearly always be aiming to hit the head ball full. If you are consistently off to one side after “thumbnail aiming”, there are two ways to fix the problem. The long-term fix it to work on either your aim or your mechanics to make the shot you get the shot you planned and set up for. The quick fix, which I’d recommend you try in tournament situations where your opponent isn’t going to give you ten practice breaks, is to aim for something other than a full ball hit on the head ball. In the rack shown, if you consistently hit on the right side of the one ball -which tends to scratch into the side pocket -- aim for something to the left. For a little change in the aim, you could line up to the right edge of the nine ball. For more change, in case your fundamentals have serious issues, you could aim full ball at the nine ball.

NORTHGLENN, CO - Feb 28, 2009 T he Colorado Cue Club was the site for 46 area APA league players on this day. The bracket is grouped by handicap with 6’s facing off against

7’s, 5’s against 4’s, and 2’s against 3’s initially. Sometimes, depending on the ratio of player skill levels a 5 may face a 6 or 7 right away though. This was the case with Brian O’Neil who after playing a 5 in the first round was thrown to the wolves facing two 6’s and a 7 (former Mile High Top Gun champion Kris Pipken) prevailing in each set. In the finals of the winners side Brian overcame Stephanie Wise to claim the hot seat. Over on the one loss side Lanny Mowry, rated a 5, took down Wyatt Brumfield, rated a 7. He then had to face Staphanie but couldn’t get there as Stephanie took the match and scored a re-match with Brian in the finals. It would turn out to be Brian’s day though as cruised to victory claiming the Fall Session Mile High Top Gun title. Congratulations to Brian O’Neil and of course to all of those Top Guns that finished in the money. Here are the updates of the 3rd Saturday Monthly 14.1 Straight Pool Tournament at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, CA. We had a field of 20 players participate in the event. We have, definitely, been consistent in tournament participation every month. Here are the details: 1st $350 Nick Spano/ Tang Hoa (Split) 2nd $170 Nick Spano/ Tang Hoa (Split) 3-4 $80 Ramin Bakhtiari & Mike Laos Nick Spano and Tang Hoa decided to split the prize money for 1st and 2nd place. These two players played very well throughout the day. Nick Spano had the high run of the day of a 65 with Tang Hoa having a run for himself of a 53. Ramin Bakhtiari and Mike Laos, also, played exceptionally well and made a run for it but were cut short at 3rd and 4th place. We had a few matches last a bit longer than expected causing players to have to wait much longer than anticipated but these four players did not waiver what so ever. Thank you to all the players and fans that participated and/or supported our event. I hope see everyone come out for next month - Saturday, 4/18/09. We’ll see you then.

14th Annual Western BCA

Chinook Winds Casino Resort was the site for this year’s Western BCA Regional 8-Ball Championships. A grand total of 1,160 players made their way to Lincoln City, Oregon the week of March 9-15th to battle for their share of the $90,000 paid out over the week in 15 different events. Equipment this year was again brought in by Bad Boys Billiard Productions. Ric Jones and his staff set up 80 awesome Diamond 7 ft. tables with Simonis cloth, Aramith balls and red circle cue balls. Bad Boys provided the players with brackets posted online in advance for the first time this year. That same online bracketing program helped them run the event in a first class manner and allowed players who couldn’t make it follow the action online. The stage was set for a great championship competition. Play got underway on Monday, March 9th, with the Mixed Scotch Doubles events. Teams consist of one male and one female player competing in either the Open or Master division. The Open division featured 100 teams playing a race to 5, double elimination format. Racing to the hot seat undefeated was the team of Larry Maes & Jessica Orth. Their opponents in the finals were a team they had defeated earlier in the event, Tony & Tricia Tipton. The finals of many of the events were filmed and posted on the internet by OTBnTV.com and this one turned out to be a thriller. The team of Tipton & Tipton, having to defeat the undefeated team of Maes & Orth twice, got the job done in the first set 5-4. The second set, however, was dominated by Maes & Orth, and they took the title and the $1,400 first place prize money with a 5-2 score. In the Masters division, 31 teams competed for the $1,600 first place prize and the coveted title of Masters Scotch Doubles Champions. Mike Stevens & Cindy Doty, no strangers to Scotch Doubles success in the past, went through the event undefeated and beat the team of Martin Thurber & Jackie Fitchner in the finals, with a 7-4 score. Tuesday morning saw the Men’s Open B division get underway with 216 players competing in the race to 5, double elimination format. Reid Rasmussen stormed to the hot seat undefeated to see whom he would face in the finals. Unfortunately a family emergency arose and Reid was forced to forfeit the final match and fly home. This gave Josh Holder, his opponent for the hot seat, the title after he defeated Adam Stromberg 5-0 in the B side final. Tuesday evening the Men’s Open A division started play with 160 players competing for the $1,000 first place prize and the title to go with it. Russ Hodgin of Portland, OR, battled his way to the hot seat with seven straight victories to see whom he would face in the finals, also taped for viewing on the internet. His opponent would be Bobby Campbell, who lost a hill-hill match in the fourth round to Tommy Silva, then won seven straight matches to earn his place in the finals. Bobby continued his hot play with a 6-3 win in the first set of the finals, but Russ Hodgin came back and battled in the second and deciding set for a thrilling 6-5 win. Tuesday night, Western BCA welcomed a special guest to the tournament, pro player Raphael Martinez. He played a special exhibition match against one of Western BCA’s Grand Master players, Dan Louie. The race to 9 only lasted 45 minutes. Raphael played nearly flawlessly, beating Dan 9-3. Raphael stayed for the week, watching the players and the finals; he sat in with the commentators calling the Men’s Master Finals for

OTBnTV.com. He even played in a 10-Ball ring game, and won, of course. Wednesday morning got the rest of the singles events underway. In the Women’s Open Singles, Natasha Hook stormed to the hot seat undefeated waiting to see who her opponent would be in the finals. That opponent was Selena Boise, who lost her third match 5-3 to Brenda Bartholomew. She then ripped off nine consecutive victories to face Hook in the finals. All 1st Place Mens M that play on the left side of the Dan Louie, Steve Lingelbach, bracket took its toll as a wellrested Natasha Hook took the first set and the title with a 5-3 score. During the Women’s Master Singles, late Wednesday night, one of the players, Denise Vaughn from Noti, OR (Near Eugene) had a severe heart attack while watching a match. One of the spectators and her close friend, Bob Robbins, jumped immediately into action, performing CPR on her. Security from Chinook Winds arrived within 2 minutes to assist Bob. The paramedics arrived just a few minutes later and within 15 minutes Denise was taken to the local hospital and then life-flighted to a Springfield Hospital where she is recovering 1st Place Wom and doing well. Bob Robbins and Cindy Doty, Andrea Saenz-M the fine security staff at Chinook Winds saved Denise’s life, and for that, Western BCA will be eternally grateful. Also getting underway on Wednesday was the Women’s Master Singles. Thirty-four women competed in the race to 7, double elimination format for the $900 first prize and the prestigious title of Women’s Master Champion. Jackie Fitchner marched to the hot seat in dominating fashion with wins over Kathy Giles 7-1, Cindy Doty 7-3, Susan Preston 7-0, Mary Hopkin 7-2, 1st Place Womens Open Team - Golde Adrianne Beach, Angela Jensen, Alisha Rogers, and Melanie Elder 7-1. Her opponent in the final match would be Liz Cole. Liz defeated Cathy Gamble 7-3 and Kim Hole 7-4 before being sent to the left side of the bracket with a 7-5 defeat at the hands of Mary Hopkin. Liz then defeated Barb Thompson 7-3, Kris Robbins 7-3, Carissa Biggs 7-3, Melissa Rushton 7-6 and Melanie Elder 7-4 to set up the finals showdown with Fitchner. Bob Zack was back for another 1st place finish at the monthly 14.1 Tournament at Sam’s Billiards on Sunday, March 1. No one came within 20 balls of him. He had high runs of 30, 37, and 40. It was another spectacular performance. Russ Hodgin came in 2nd place. Newcomer Lloyd Aalvick came in third beating Sam Rabito, who came in 4th, by starting off with a run of 21. Sam won a squeaker earlier over David Randell, 50 to 49, coming back from 24 balls down. Both Sam and Tracy Fannin had runs of 33 in the first round. David had a run of 29. Lloyd had a run of 21. The final results were as follows: 1st $70 Bob Zack 2nd $50 Russ Hodgin 3rd $35 Lloyd Aalvick 4th $20 Sam Rabito High Run: 40 – Bob Zack The entry fee is going down in April! Pete loaned her his camera and saved the day. Division Manager Kurt Hamm was outstanding as awards presenter, and for the fun of it announced Angelica Harmon as an “Olympic gymnast” who would help with the presentations. Most of us were taken by the prank and thought she really was an Olympian - she played the part really well, placing gold medals around everyone’s necks and getting into most of the photos. Kurt also presented CPL’s Sponsor of the Year, Rodders owner John Johnson, with a special award — a $20 gift certificate to his own

It’s one of those ‘feel good’ days — a day of catching up with all the players on what’s happening, renewing friendships, meeting new players, getting teams lined up for Spring 9-ball, talking about the upcoming Western BCA 8-Ball Championships, and generally laughing a lot and horsing around. Western BCA gave away dozens of great prizes to lucky players, and Doug Schulze, Western Washington BCA league operator, donated $200 in vendor gift certificates. Chinook Winds Casino Resort staff was on hand to hand out gifts to players who used their Winners Circle cards. Event vendors The Parlor, Billiards 911 and Billiards and Barstools all provided players with fine-quality pool-related gear and services. The smoke-free playing venue boasted a full bar and food concession, and all tables were open for play, including an all-night practice room, thanks to the green fee attached to the entry fees. Many players took advantage of Chinook Wind’s free parking for the week and stayed in their RV’s and campers. Local retailers, as always, were happy to see our players coming into Lincoln City, 1st Place Mens Open Team - Little Dutch Inn

received $2,500 for their win, while But It Was Suited settled for $2,010 for second place. The Men’s Master Team division drew 16 strong teams. KC’s Midway, consisting of big guns Mike Stevens, Tim Desmarais, Clayton Foran, Nick Lopez, Bob Masters, Delmar Rowden Steve Linglebach, Gary French, Bob Zack and Dan Louie, raced to the driver’s seat with wins over Malarkey’s and look forward to having 13-7, Solid 13-9, Anger Management 13-8 and PH.D 13-10. Malarkey’s us back in October. after their first round defeat, came back on the B side to defeat McQ’s The 2009 Western Masters 13-7, Where’d These Guys BCA Regional 8-Ball Come From 13-4, Misspent Youth Championships saw some 13-2, Anger Management 13-6, of the best competition in Soundview Bar & Grill #1 13-12 and the west, with 11 out of 15 PH.D 13-10 to earn another shot at champions being crowned KC’s Midway. There would be no undefeated. A huge thank drama or thrilling comebacks in this you goes out to Western BCA final as KC’s Midway commanded for organizing and putting on the first set with a 13-2 win over this great tournament for the Malarky’s and took the $2,700 first 14th consecutive year. Thank you to the over two-dozen place prize. OTBnTV is pleased to announce that we will be in Las Vegas during the 29th VNEA International Championships May 21-30, 2009 to film the event. This year we will be doing things a little differently with FREE LIVE streaming broadcasts on Sunday (24th) and Monday (25th) as the Singles Events wind down and during the finals. LIVE streaming will again be part of the events on Friday (29th) and Saturday (30th) for the team finals. During the LIVE streaming

we will have commentary during the matches which will give an added dimension for the pool playing audience. The LIVE stream will be available over the internet and the families and friends of the players participating in these events will be able to watch their favorite players on the TV table. Besides the LIVE streaming OTBnTV will also be having tape delayed broadcasts of other events going on during the VNEA International Championships such as the Parade of Flags and the Awards Ceremony.
