Sometimes 3 Cushions Is Not the Best Choice! By Bill Smith “Mr3Cushion”, Old School Pool.net
YES, THE GREAT game’s name is indeed three-cushion billiards, but that doesn’t mean that three-cushion shots are always the right shots. The objec¬tive of these position lessons is to simplify things, but there are many, many ways to accomplish that which don’t correspond to merely reducing the number of cushions you use. I con¬stantly see average players choose such shots, across the width of the table, in¬stead of correct four- or five-rail shots along the length. And often enough, the longer shots will afford greater op¬portunities to position object balls in high-percentage scoring zones (in the corners being the most favorable, with your second choice being along the side rails). When you play shots three rails across the width,
you must also be more accurate about which side of the second ball you score upon. It sounds like splitting hairs, but it’s absolutely mandatory for good position play. In addition, you’ll need a more delicate touch to control the first ball and speed of the cue ball. By contrast, playing shots over the length of the table lets you cut the first ball to a cor¬ner; or three rails around the table to a long-rail zone; or the other 3-rail object-ball route, short rail, long rail, short rail, to a zone; or to the short cushion and then down to a corner, in the manner of a straight-back bank in pool. Your position possibilities are far more numerous with this length-of-the-table concept. Now on to some examples, In Diagram 1, we see a shot which comes up often. Most players will drive the first ball to the short rail, and play the shot off the obvious three cushions. This technique figures to hit the red ball full and drive it away from the corner
4
The Break - April 2010
instead of into it for good posi-tion; once again, remember that ob¬ject balls are their biggest when near a corner. This shot is correctly played off four cushions (scoring off the end rail, as shown), over-cutting that first ball into the right-hand cor¬ner so it returns to the opposite side rail. The four-cushion execution demands a slightly better hit, but with the right technique specifically, two tips of 3 o’clock English and a short stroke it’s really not that difficult. Most importantly, it will yield a far better second shot, all three balls near that side rail. Diagram 2 shows you another shot which is often played, in effect, backwards. Many players will indeed choose a four-rail route, but the wrong one, sending the cue ball off the short rail and in behind the second ball. Again, this knocks the red away from the corner instead of into it. These players apparently feel the angle is more natural that way, and that’s fine if you need only one point to win the game... but it won’t get you that good second-shot position you’re looking for. The correct way to play this shot is off four cushions but short, as shown; your fourth rail should be that side rail, driving the
first ball in the route you see diagrammed and moving the second ball toward the corner. Shoot this striking the cue ball dead center; that will help shorten your angle. In Diagram 3, we have a shot which will be played three rails by some and five rails by most. Where they misplay the shot is in trying to drive the first ball off three cushions (rails A, B and C) and back to the long rail for posi¬tion; that only creates a kiss between the third and fourth cushions. Instead, bank that first ball softly cross-corner, as shown.
www.TheBreakMagazine.com
There’s absolutely no chance of a kiss that way; and you can see that if you score off five cushions, you’ll have a juicy second shot. Here you must play more precisely for tem¬po and speed of the cue ball and first ball; use moderate (one tip) English. Diagrams 4 and 5 show shots similar in concept and in practice; in each case, the ball upon which you’re trying to score is near the middle of the table. The correct method for shots like these is to land on that scoring ball softly, so it becomes the first ball for your next shot. (But you don’t want to try and drive the ball on which you score to the center of the table; that’s too far to send it, and will require you to over-hit the cue ball. shot. Don’t be con¬fused by these explanations; once you practice my recommendations at the table, their simplicity will be apparent to you.) Also, you’ll need to pay more attention to the first-ball speed if you want a good
next practice the shot of Diagram 4 by focusing on the route of that first ball: three rails into the corner, as you see. Use two tips of 3 o’clock English; your correct tem¬po and speed for the cue ball will come soon enough. (If you use sufficient speed to drive the first ball three rails, you should have automatically enough to score too.) In the shot in Diagram 5, you’re trying to bank that first ball softly cross-corner as a one-pocket player would; use extreme 3 o’clock English again, and add a short stroke to help retard the first ball’s progress. Note that the shots of both Diagrams 4 and 5 could be scored off three rails but, you’d be turning the first object ball loose to create multi¬ple kiss risks, and you’d have totally uncertain position in each case. These correct-shot ideas I’m sharing with you have been gleaned by playing and observing the top players in the world. Competitive pressure will make the average player overlook these position opportunities, and nervously hurry the shot. Don’t fall for that. Study these shots, look for similar concepts (they come up more often than you might suspect), and take your time. It’ll pay off handsomely.
Get it Straight with Straight Pool By Samm Diep, PoolTipJar.com © April 2010 Photo Courtesy of Mike Fieldhammer, BilliardCoach.com
I have recently become completely obsessed with straight pool, aka 14.1 continuous or simply 14.1. This classic discipline was the game of choice for many of the old school legendary players. It was the game played in the 1961 movie, The Hustler, starring Jackie Gleason and Paul Newman. A player’s worth was measured by their high run and even then, the better player could still get shut out by steady ball-pocketing and patient safety play. These days, straight pool players seem to be a dying breed. Most recently, “Mr. 400” John Schmidt has made the game popular again. I’ve had the honor of watching Samm Diep him run 100+ balls in person on more than one occasion and it inspires me be a better player. Objective Straight pool is a call-pocket game. Balls may be pocketed in any pocket, in any order. One point is received for each ball pocketed. Players shoot until they miss, play a safety, or they reach their target match points. The 15th ball from each rack is left untouched on the table along with the cue ball. The remaining 14 balls are racked, leaving the head ball empty. The player continues to shoot attempting to pocket the 15th ball while breaking open the newly racked balls to continue their run. Most recently, I watched John run 204 balls at the 2010 SBE 14.1 Challenge organized by Steve & Heather Kurtz and Charlie Eames. The run was made on a 9’ Diamond pro-am with fresh cloth, fairly clean balls, in 80 degree greasy, humid heat. Spectators were gathered on both sides to watch. His run was not perfect. Several times he got out of line and was forced to shoot recovery shots to get back in the game. According to him, his run was not textbook but with strong shotmaking and savvy position play at the end of each rack, he strung together 14 and a half racks. That’s true a testament to his tenacity. Benefits Since I began playing more straight pool, I have seen noticeable improvements in the following areas: • I pocket balls with better speed. There is an ‘ideal’ speed that comes along with the game. I learned very quickly that you don’t need to slam the balls. In fact, it’s better if you don’t. • My breakouts in 8-ball have been much more precise. Instead of just busting into a cluster, I’m much more confident in knowing which balls will go where. • I feel good about my combination shots. They come up fairly often in straight pool runs. • I’m reminded of the ‘every single shot matters’ mentality. In this day of alternate-breaks, we’re guaranteed to have another chance at the table. It can be easy to take a shot for granted here and there. In straight pool, one missed shot could cost you 25 or 50 balls, or even the match. If you do get another chance at the table, you need to warm up again from sitting so long. I’m fortunate enough to have the DSPA (Denver Straight Pool Association) league in my area which affords me the opportunity to share my love for the game with so many others. If you have a league near you, I would strongly recommend checking it out. In no way am I an expert in the game but I certainly appreciate it and all that it has done for me. I love straight pool so much because every single time I crack into the rack it’s a whole new game with original, sophisticated scenarios; a little nudge here, a little bump there. Even John gets surprised at times by the outcome of the stack. There are so many subtleties to this beautiful game. The challenges are endless. If you have never tried it, try it this week. If you haven’t played it in a while, set a new high-run goal and revisit the game. If you already play it, introduce it to someone new. Let’s keep the game alive!
Ask the Viper
By Mellissa Little, Ask the Viper
Melissa Little
QUESTION: I heard that you recently won the 8-ball event at the US Bar Table Championships, so I’ve got an 8-Ball strategy question for you. I've always heard the phrase: "Don't run 7 if you can't run 8". My question is, if I analyze the balls and I know I can't run the rack because of one or two problem balls, how many balls should I pocket or should I not pocket any at all to leave more obstructions for my opponent??”
ANSWER: Your asking a 9-ball player a 8-ball question- but considering that I did finished 3rd in the 2009 BCAPL 8-Ball Grand Masters and won the US 8-Ball Bar Table Championships in Reno, I guess I can share some tips with you how I finished so well. Honestly, I was learning to play 8-ball as the tournament went on- with the help of some of the Worlds best (Shane, Oscar and Mark) who gave me a few tricks up my sleeve to help me along the way- So, I accepted the challenge and tried my best. 8-ball is a very difficult game…. there is a lot more to the game then people think. I noticed that when I approached the pool table with a run out mentality and visualized my pattern first, by looking first at the 8-ball and working backwards to create my pattern, I sometimes ran out. When it works, it looks great and you look like you know what your doing. But when I got into trouble I had to have a new plan and came up with a smart safety. Now, when I didn’t have a clear pattern or when I got out of line, I strategized by plugging the holes with my balls and handed my opponent an opportunity to try and run out. When they got stuck and started scratching there heads wondering why they did not get out, I thought to my self “this is working” Later, it seemed like someone tapped me on the shoulder and said “you won the tournament and you can now put your cue away” I surprised myself by winning the 8-ball championships? So, back to the question- you have to have a plan and stick with it and if you get into trouble play safe and if you know you can’t get out then plug the holes with your balls and watch your opponent try and when they make a mistake then you must capitalize on your opportunity. Best of luck to all, Viper Melissa “The Viper” Little has been a WPBA Touring Professional for over 10-years, she has represented the USA in Four WPA World Championships and has over 20 top10 WPBA career finishes. Johnson and Lopez Win
On Saturday and Sunday, March 2021, 2010, American Legion Post #129 in Oak Harbor, WA, hosted its annual Partners 8-Ball Tournament, awarding $3,000 in prize money. Free, secure WiFi was once again provided, and we will work to provide this 1st: Jerry Johnson and Isaac Lopez service in all future tournaments. It looks like the poor economy and tight money has finally gotten to everybody. Only 20 teams, versus last year’s 25 teams, showed up to play. Most folks elected to travel on Saturday morning, instead of coming over on Friday for our Warm-Up Tournament, thereby saving an extra day’s motel costs. Also, we missed the usual Everett players, as they were tied up in their own local end-ofleague tournament on this same weekend. Our tournament was played 2nd: Don Wirtman and LT on 5 - 4x8 tables, all located at the American Legion Hall. This year, as times and business are tight, the American Legion only added $200 to the prize fund instead of the $500 added last year. However, $20 greens fees were charged to each of 20 teams, amounting to $400, also added entirely to the prize fund. Thus, a total of $600 was added to the prize money, this year. After several years of local domination, this turned out to be Tacoma’s “big year.” 1st Place was captured by Jerry Johnson and Isaac Lopez, both of Tacoma, WA, while Don Wirtaman and LT, also both of Tacoma, WA, hung on for 2nd Place. 3rd Place went to Steve Holloway and Chuck Thompson, both of Bellingham, WA. Acquitting themselves far better 3rd: Steve Holloway and Chuck Thompson than expected and becoming the surprise winners of 4th Place were Romy Salangsang and Ricky Ford, both of Oak Harbor, WA. Tieing for 5th and 6th Places were Mark Cabral (Mt. Vernon, WA) and Jake Dosch (Sedro-Woolley, WA), along with Gary Reeves (Penticton, B.C.) and Rick Fraser (Abbotsford, B.C.) Our gratitude goes to Chuck Hassler, who organized the tournament, and to the staff at the American Legion, most of which consisted of volunteers, for its wonderful support. Again, the kitchen ran full-fare from Friday evening through Sunday evening and the staff received many compliments from the tournament participants for the attentive and fast service. And finally, our sincerest HERE IS THE PRIZE BREAKDOWN: gratitude goes out to 1st $1120 Jerry Johnson/Isaac Lopez 2nd $840 Don Wirtaman/LT all of the players who 3rd $560 Steve Holloway/Chuck Thompson took the time out of 4th $280 Romy Salangsang/Ricky Ford otherwise busy lives 5-6 $100 Mark Cabral/Jake Dosch to come and visit our Gary Reeves/Rick Fraser fair village.

Do you want to play like Efren Reyes? Previously, I’ve urged you to keep things as simple as possible. A 4 10 recent column had you practicing shots with just a rolling cue ball -no side spin, draw or slide. I’d like 8 to add to that idea something from Albert Einstein: “Make things as simple as possible, but not simpler.” There are times when the best solution for a shot requires remarkable spin. Efren Reyes is known for being ready for such shots and seeing those solutions. There’s no reason you can’t be a little more like Efren than you are right now. In the diagram is a shot from an eight ball game in which 5 you’re shooting solids. The shot diagrammed has several nice features, including potentially blocking the pocket for the eight, running out if the five goes in by getting “short-side” position, pocketing your opponent’s hung ball for safe, .... All you have to do for this solution to your problem is spin the cue ball a little. That is, a little more than most beginners and intermediates and even some advanced players are prepared to spin it. This is not a power shot; use finesse instead. Cue as far to the left of whitey as you can without miscuing, and at or slighlty above the equator. It is mostly the spin that will take you down the table. As shown, the cut on the five is about half-ball or 30 degrees. If you make the cut a smaller angle, it’s easy to get to the hung 10 ball. As you work on the shot, increase the cut angle until it’s no longer possible to reach the short side of the four ball. Sometimes you’ll have to use extreme measures. Prepare for them. REJ

3rd Annual Platte Valley Open Platform for League of Champions Expansion in Wyoming PHOENIX, AZ (March 10, 2010) - The United States Professional Poolplayers Association's (UPA) League of Champions continues to spread across the United States like wildfire. One of the more recent states to add its players to the UPA's league roster within the past year, Wyoming. To continue to build upon the league system's platform, the Third Annual Platte Valley Open will be held April 2nd through April 4th in Saratoga, Wyoming. The $10,000 total added inaugural event will be held at Platte Valley Community Center with $7,000 added going to the Masters Division (open to all players); $2,000 to the Classic Division (Wyoming Intermediate); and $700 to the Sportsman Division (Carbon County Beginners). The entry deadline for the tournament is March 26, 2010. Only paid entry spots will be reserved. For more information on this event or to forward your entry, contact E.J. Glode, P.O. Box 605, Saratoga, Wyoming 82331. He can be reached at (307) 329-8924 or email ejglode@yahoo.com. Wyoming's League Operator, Heather Curby, is looking forward to expanding the UPA throughout her state and stated recently: "We've been able to expand our League of Champions to surrounding areas. It's fun and exciting to inform the players of how the league operates and the benefits involved. My favorite aspect of the League of Champions is the rating system and how it breaks down all avenues of your game including your break, foul, and miss percentages. It offers the player input into the areas improvement might be needed as well as one's strengths. Another great tool we are able to offer is rankings with other shooters across the nation and not just in your immediate divisions. The league has definitely been a rewarding experience as an operator and I look forward to many more great seasons in the future!" Click here to find a UPA Pool League near you. We want to also congratulate UPA monthly winners: Amanda Pulley won a brand new Instroke case and Allen Murphy took home a brand new Poison AR4 Cue from Poison Cues! Each month the UPA continues to draw for prizes from our gracious sponsors Instroke Cases and Poison Cues so get your name in the hat and we might see your name here next time around. Looking to initiate your own league? It's a great time to get started as the UPA is offering discounts on its territory licenses for new league operators. If you would like to learn more about the organization as a whole or are interested in more information about becoming a League Operator, visit our website at www.upatour.com. 1st Annual Western BCA Grand Masters Challenge
HUGE SUCCESS! By Bret Baker, with contributions from Rebecca Easley and Suzanne Smith
Western BCA introduced a brand new event at their recent 15th Annual Regional 8-Ball Championships. The Grand Masters Challenge made its debut on March 9-11 at the beautiful Chinook Winds Casino Resort. Eight of the Northwest’s topranked Master and Grand Master players were invited to take part in this very special event and battle it out on the pool table for $6,300 in prize money. This event was sponsored by Cue Sports International/BCA Pool League, Western BCA Pool Players Association, and Brain Covey and BC Cues, cue makers who donated cues for a fundraising raffle; all of the prize money was raised separately, with no money being taken away from the Regional Tournament. Each player played ten games with each of the other competitors in a round robin format, with the score recorded at the end of the match. The winner would be determined by the total number of games won. On Tuesday, March 9th at 2:00 in the afternoon, action got underway with young guns Matt Horner and Eddie Mataya doing battle on table #1 and experienced veterans Todd Marsh and Dan Louie showing their skills on table #2. Many onlookers entered a “Pick the Winner” contest, in which for $5 they could pick the order they thought the competitors would finish; this fundraiser helped benefit the prize money for the GMC. Some of those predictions took a severe hit when Marsh and Horner each scored 7-3 wins and let everyone know this was anybody’s

event to win. Two rounds were completed on Day 1 of the event with Glenn Atwell and Matt Horner sharing the lead with 13 wins each. Rich Geiler was only one game back with 12 wins and Todd Marsh had a total of 10. Day 2 brought more great pool being enjoyed not only by those who could attend the event in Lincoln City, but also by those who were unable to make it. The Northwest Women’s Pool Association (NWPA) provided live-streaming on the web, via U-STREAM.COM. Viewers at home were able to watch all the commentated matches and chat with commentators. NWPA Live streaming proved to be a resounding success as NWPA recorded over 4,500 hits, 2,262 unique viewers, with over 1,870

total hours of viewing in the 5 days of live streaming! When the dust had settled on the second day of the GMC, 5 of the 7 rounds were in the books and once again Glenn Atwell lead all competitors with 33 wins, Don Wirtaman and Matt Horner were tied for second with 27 wins and Rich Geiler was still right in the hunt with 26 wins. On the final day, the players finished out the last two rounds, playing the only players they had not yet faced in the event. Glenn could smell the finish line and was not about to let his lead slip away. He finished like a true champion, with two monstrous 7-3 wins over Rich Geiler and Dan Louie, to take the title of Grand Master Champion and the $2,000 paycheck that accompanied that title, in addition to paid entry to the BCAPL: National Championships Grand Master Division. Todd Marsh rode a couple of 6-4 wins over Eddie Mataya and Don Wirtaman to finish in a tie with Wirtaman for second place with 36 total wins. Rich Geiler made a very respectable return to this event with his 35 wins and a 4th place finish. Matt Horner finished in the 5th spot with 33 total wins. Dan Louie and Eddie Mataya finished tied with 32 wins and Bob Zack, who fought through a bad case of stomach flu, hung in to battle and finished with 29 total wins. THE OFFICIAL FINAL SCORES: Glenn Atwell 47 $2,000 Todd Marsh 36 $1,075 Don Wirtaman 36 $1,075 Rich Geiler 35 $600 Matt Horner 33 $500 Dan Louie 32 $375 Eddie Mataya 32 $375 Bob Zack 29 $300 The GMC players were all very excited about this event and look forward to competing in it again. Many other Master players were also excited and are looking to earn their chance to be a part of this event in the future. The Grand Masters Challenge will be a regular feature at the Annual 8-Ball Regional Championships!

Lincoln City - The week of March 8-14th, 2010 was a record-breaking, historymaking, resounding success for Western BCA Pool Players Association. Eight-ball players from around the Western BCA Region flocked to the beautiful coastal town of Lincoln City, Oregon to compete in the biggest and best regional tournament in the country: The 15th Annual Western BCA Regional 8-Ball Championships. These Championships featured 16 different divisions with 1,215 players participating, many in multiple events. With the most entries ever in its 15-year history, Western BCA welcomed players from Oregon and Washington to Chinook Winds Casino Resort, including the first ever Junior competitor. These players qualified for these championships through their local leagues and traveled here to try to win their share of over $100,000 in cash prizes! These Championships marked the beginning of the Grand Masters Challenge and the advent of live-streaming matches on the Internet. It was an event to be remembered. The action got underway on Monday, March 8th at 9:00 am with the Open Scotch Doubles and Master Scotch Doubles divisions. The Master Scotch Doubles featured 35 teams playing a race to six. Sean Lewis and Shari Ross from Players Club Limited League (LTD) ran through the field undefeated to take the $1,650 first prize. Eddie Mataya and Cindy Sliva from the Northwest Players League (NPL) finished second after falling short in the hot seat match 6-4. They defeated the team of Dave Schelske and Wanda Plummer in a hill-hill match to get a second shot at Lewis & Ross, only to fall short again by a 6-4 score. Meanwhile the Open Scotch Doubles division sported 111 teams playing a race to five. The team of

days as singles matches took over the tables and many of the Scotch Doubles participants were also faring well in the singles. Finally on Thursday night the title was settled with John Te and Alisha Rogers taking first place honors and the $1,400 winner’s check with a 5-2 win over Tim Haines and Rosie Jensen. Tuesday morning the singles events got underway. With eight different singles divisions, there was something for every level of player from Novice to Grand Master. The largest of these divisions, the Men’s Open B division, with an incredible 252 entries, started playing first. Matches were a race to five. Jason Grijalva of NPL did the unthinkable—he won nine straight matches and did not allow any of his opponents to ever reach the hill. He topped 2nd place finisher Travis De Jong of LTD with a 5-3 win. Travis had won six straight matches before being sent to the one-

Tuesday evening the Men’s Open A division kicked off with 169 players battling for almost $9,000 in prize money. Men’s Open A matches were a race to six. JW Koon of Cherry City League (CCL) bulldozed through the field undefeated, winning nine straight matches to take the $1,000 first place check. Koon’s opponent in the finals was Robert Alston, from Western Washington United League (WWA). Alston won three matches before suffering his first loss at the hands of John Evans. Alston then went to the oneloss side where he won seven straight matches, including a 6-3 rematch win over Evans, leaving John in third place and earning a another shot at Koon in the finals. Koon, being well-rested after

waiting to see who he would face for the championship, defeated a tired Alston 6-4 in the final match. Alston won $765 for second place. The Men’s Masters Singles event started on Wednesday morning. There was a buzz among the players that this might be “their year,” as the newly formed Grand Masters Challenge took eight of the top players out of this field and opened up the opportunity to win the most coveted title at the Regional Championships— Men’s Master Champion. Sixty-six players screwed their cues together to battle for their share of over $5,400 in prize money. Paul Marquez of NPL raced to the hot seat with six straight wins. Marquez would then wait to see who would survive the one-loss side to face him in the finals. That player would be LTD master player, Jim Conway. Conway, after being defeated by Marquez on the winner’s side 7-2, went on a mission, defeating Robert Niemeyer 7-2, Randy Baker 7-5, Tyler Luce 7-3, Eddie Carrido 7-6, and Dana Aldridge 7-6 to earn a rematch with Marquez. The finals got started late Thursday evening and were streamed live, via USTREAM over the internet thanks to the women of Northwest Women’s Pool Association (NWPA). Jim Conway took the first set in a thrilling hillhill match to force a second set for all the marbles. In the second set, Conway continued his strong play and finally at about 2:00 in the morning the dust had settled and Jim Conway was crowned the Men’s Master Singles Champion with a 7-4 victory over the young Marquez. Conway collected $1,250 for his tremendous performance, while Marquez cashed a check for $900 for his second place finish. Also in the Men’s Divisions were the Men’s Senior Singles and the Men’s Novice Singles. In the Men’s Senior Singles, Ron Shelton of NPL outlasted the

Meanwhile in the Men’s Novice Singles, Alan Junes of Lower Columbia Clatsop League (LCC) came out on top of the 10-player bracket losing the first set in the finals 4-2, but came back to defeat second place finisher Tyler Franklin by a score of 4-2 to claim the title. Junes and Franklin won free entry into the next Men’s Open B Singles event. While these events were taking place, the first annual Grand Masters Challenge kicked off. This very special event featured eight of the top ranked Master and Grand Master pool players, playing a round robin tournament, with each playing each other 10-game matches. Glenn Atwell of NPL played steady and strong throughout the three days and finished with an outstanding 47 wins and cashing a $2,000 1st prize check. Also taking place on Wednesday and Thursday were four jam-packed divisions of Women’s Singles events. In the Women’s Master Singles, 36 ladies
Masters Singles and Scotch Doubles, and 1st place with her team . The Women’s Open Singles division boasted 124 competitors—the most ever to enter this event. The path to victory would not be an easy one. Rosie Jensen of NPL stormed through the A-side of the bracket undefeated, winning nine straight matches on her way the title and an $800 payday. Rosie’s opponent in the finals was Dawnella Saville of LTD. Jensen defeated Saville in the hot seat match 5-3. Saville came back from the B-side of the bracket to face Jensen again, but Jensen took the final match and Saville claimed $585 for 2nd place. Facing Crazy Al’s Better Late Than Never in a rematch, the Pine Tree Girls remained steady and strong, defeating Crazy Al’s girls 11-9 for the title of Women’s Open Team Champion and a cash prize of $1,300. Better Late Than Never were very happy being better 2nd than 3rd, and won $1,050. The Women’s Master Team event featured only nine teams but was not lacking in talent. Charlene Dawson of NPL raced to the hot seat to wait and see who she would face in the finals. That player would be none other than her own sister, Donna Wainanwit, also of NPL. Wainanwit, after a 4-2 loss to Dody Orr, went to the west side of the bracket and Men’s Open B Singles: Jason Grijalva defeated Sherry Smith, Stephanie Amerman and Hole, Andrea Saenz-Maes, Mary Hopkin, won her rematch with Cindy Sliva and 2010 Women’s Master Dody Orr to advance to the Champion Kimberly Kirk, raced through finals. I just never knew. My grandfather is all Filipino and is 100 years old. He arrived in San Francisco in1939. Because of him I knew many Filipinos and was a member of the Filipino/American society. I learned many things about the islands and history. Nobody ever mentioned pool to me. I knew that Filipinos were fearless warriors and their ferociousness changed military strategies. I knew that Filipinos were the greatest cane Paul Marquez fighters in every type of stick martial arts offered. Filipino systems are the only systems considered or mentioned. The point is, if Filipinos did something special, it was mentioned. Maybe in pool they were always the best, and I just did not hear about it. But how is it they are the strongest among all countries? Since when? Always? Or, did Efren and Jose Parica expose the Filipino excellence and dominance? Only to spark the Filipino people to step it up a level or two when they had something to celebrate? After Imelda's Rule, the Philippines needed something to celebrate. The timing to me makes me think, so I wonder? Maybe all Filipinos are naturally gifted? Really? Everyone talks about the Filipino stroke and how graceful they move the cue ball. Well, Alex Pagulayan plays without this so called Filipino stroke and is AZ Billiards number one player in the world. This may be a hypothesis or guess if you will. Here it is. "The Filipinos played quality pool. The mixture of billiards and rotation helped them understand 9ball and one pocket quickly. Rotation with all the balls improves kicking at balls, I mean how could it not. Jose Parica then Efren were special and these special players gave the Filipinos something to be excited about and to be proud of. Then without a doubt Efren was the best player in the world. The best! More pride and more inspiration. Heroes and inspiration the Philippines desperately needed and hoped for. It's tough there and some validation from the entire world that Filipino people are capable of anything . This had changed the island for the better forever. "I am part Filipino and I believe Efren Reyes, with support of Alex Pagalayan, Francisco Bustamante, and Jose Parica had an impact as enormous as Muhammad Ali and Jesse Owens did here in America. When I recently went to a niece's birthday party and it was revealed I played upper level pool. Then the talks about these special men excited the entire room. I shared a story unremarkable to most. The story, Vegas 2001 I played craps with Efren and Alex at the Riviera and was personally pretty giddy about the whole experience. Not as giddy as family at my nieces party. I realized I may as well have played craps with Michael Jordan, and Muhammad Ali, with some involvement with Abraham Lincoln in some way. If this type of inspiration remains consistent like it has been with pool, the world should expected an influx of Filipino boxers to dominate. Without a doubt Manny Pacqiou has become the world's best fighter. I wonder if Efren gave Manny what he needed in some way. I do know Manny through a pool tournament at Hard Times, a coincidence? Maybe, or maybe Efren Reyes happened to change the world. A change directly affected the Filipino people, including a better self image. Am I crazy? I mean a third world island or suggested reaction caused pool players is conspiracy craziness right? I mean to suggest the world is better now and potentially better forever is crazy voodoo right? A voodoo or spel the cause? But just maybe it would have to be some god, witch, warlock or super hero behind it. Do you believe I'm those things? If it's my only guess. For my case dough. I'm betting this grandiose miraculous claim is being done by a magician.

The Grip: WHY It Is Important By Roger Long, Advanced Certified Instructor
Where and how to grip a cue stick is a largely overlooked matter with a lot of players. Maybe they feel it’s too insignificant to pay much attention to, or maybe no one has ever explained its significance to Roger Long them. Either way, in this article, I am going to attempt to explain why everyone should get a grip on the grip. First, you should grip the cue at a point that will have your forearm pointing straight down at the floor when the tip contacts the cue ball. The reason for this is because the cue will be most level at this point in the stroke. And if you remember one of my prior articles, you will remember that a level cue is what helps propel the cue ball in a straight line; while an unlevel cue only hampers that effort. Another thing that shooting with an unlevel cue does is to cause contact further out to the shoulder
of the tip, which then causes a side force to the tip and ferrule, which in turn causes a quick and irritating vibration in the shaft. Your personal grip spot will be a product of your bridge length, coupled with your arm lengths, coupled with your head-height over the cue. Next, you should cradle the cue in your hand with the thumb in contact with the tip of the index finger, and that index finger plus the next one or two should be in contact with the underside of the cue. Notice how I said “cradle the cue,” instead of “grip the cue.” That’s because cradling the cue is exactly what you should be doing. The word “grip” can connote a tight squeeze, and a tight squeeze will result in a locked wrist − something that will detract from a smooth and efficient stroke. Now I know that last statement will bring challenges from those who contend that the cue ball doesn’t know whether your wrist is locked or loose so it really doesn’t matter what you do with your wrist. Let me answer those challengers with this: You are right; the cue ball doesn’t know whether your wrist is locked or loose. But then, the cue ball doesn’t know
anything at all, so why would we even give the cue ball a vote on this matter? What’s important is this: mass, times velocity squared = force. This simply means that a heavy cue delivers more force than a lighter cue when both are stroked at the same speed. Therefore, a locked wrist has a tendency to cause a tighter grip on the butt of the cue, which then has the effect of adding weight to the cue. That’s right. Think about it. When you grip the cue tightly, your hand and forearm become one with the cue, so the weight of the hand and arm gets added to the weight of the cue. Now the cue ball still won’t know that you’re hitting it with more weight, but the results will be drastically different if you don’t slow the stroke way down. For consistent feedback information, I feel it’s best to just allow the weight of the cue itself to hit the ball. By now it should obvious to you that I believe in using a light grip and a loose wrist, and these two things should be placed at the proper spot on the butt of the cue. But more importantly, I hope I made it obvious why I believe these things are important.
Exciting Season Comes to An End Here we are at the end of another exciting pool season! The season began with the fun Ladies Big Event. Precision8ter Pool School ran a Mini Shotgun Tournament and Gauntlet of Challenging Shots for the guys and the ladies! Very fun to see players jumping balls for the first time and amazing themselves with what they can do! We began raising funds that evening for a Wild Card Team to be sent to the 30th Anniversary VNEA International tournament in Vegas. Our hope was to encourage new players to play in the Women League as well as to reward those players that have participated for so many years. This was an opportunity to show what can be done if you are willing to try! This season we are 29 years strong and have 58 hot shooters in it! (Up 16 players and two teams from last year!!) We had players drive from Livingston, Helena, Belgrade, Manhatten, Three Forks, and Butte to play in our league this year! Many tough shooters this season!! The final tournament was very exciting! Always fun to see all the players! The final two teams came down to the out of town players (Becka Larkin, Molly Jones (who also took top shooter in a very tight finish), Janet Dunks (Butte), Cathy Hellwitz (Helena) and Barb Walker) playing for the Eagles #3 against the pool school team players (Cat Hansen, Misty “Pit bull” DeBates, Amanda

The crowd went nuts (many people there for the wild card drawing as well)! The match was not over though. Hub #2 had to beat Eagles #3 twice to win it coming from the loser’s bracket (put there by the Eagles #3!!). Again the battle was on!! Both teams played some amazing shots and well thought out safeties. It again came down to the final game and the out of town players got it! Well played ladies!! We did the Wild Card Team Drawing after the final match. Everyone was excited to see who would win a free trip to Vegas! Over a thousand dollars was raised to send this team. A special thanks goes out to Chris Ballinger, Mary Keys, the Precision8ter Pool School, Rocky Mountain Gaming and all the people that donated and participated in our fund raising! We drew out the team cards one by one to have some back up teams in case the winners could not play. The Cat’s Paw #3 team card was drawn! If they are not able to make it, the Cat’s Paw #1 will be sent! Good season ladies and good (See Women’s League Results page 24) luck in Vegas!!—-Cat

With 500 entries, $24,500 added and over $70,000 in total prize money, the 17th Annual U.S. Bar Table Championships (USBTC) came to a close in the late evening hours Sunday, February 28th after having its largest year ever. Held at the Terrible’s Sand Regency Casino Hotel in Reno, Nevada, this year saw a mix of the experienced and new, the return of “The Pearl” to the winner’s circle, a lady named Little who accomplished no small feat, and a slim kid from South Dakota raking in a tad over $13,000 in 7 days. Produced by CueSports International (CSI) with Bad Boys Billiard Productions, the 17th USBTC has become the definitive bar table event in the U.S. that is open to all players. The tournament features 3 open divisions; 10-ball, 9-ball and 8-ball. In 2010 CSI also added for the first time two separate women’s divisions; 9-ball and 8-ball. The weeklong event started with 115 players in the Open 10-Ball segment Monday, February 22. Cruising undefeated into the 10-Ball hot seat, “The South Dakota Kid” Shane Van Boening faced off in the 10-Ball finals against Jose Parica. Van Boening dominated the match from the first crack of the first rack beating Parica 7-1. While the 10-Ball division wrapped up, the first rounds of the Open and Women’s 9-Ball division started. There were 139 players in the Open 9-Ball division and 24 players in the Women’s 9-Ball division. On the open side, again the lightening hot Van Boening found himself in the finals but this time against German Professional Thorsten Hohmann who was playing in his first bar table event ever. This time the hot seat belonged to Hohmann who defeated Joe Gonzalez, Richard Cook, Arturo Hernandez, Tommy Tokoph, Jeff Heath, Sylver Ochoa, Scott Frost and initially tossed Van Boening to the one loss side 7-5. Once being bounced to the “L” side of the bracket, Van Boening took out Stevie Moore, Oscar Dominguez, Scott Frost and then not to be denied wrecked vengeance upon Hohmann double dipping in the finals to capture first place. In its first year, both women’s divisions drew tough fields including professional players Melissa Little, Tina Palowski, Susan Williams, Amanda Lambert, well known Master and Grand Master level players Noel Campos, Bonnie Plowman, Melinda Bailey and Sunny Griffin to name a few. However it was a story of déjà vu, as the final matches in both divisions pitted Palowski versus Little. Melissa Little, currently ranked 20th on the WPBA, was the queen of the hot seat for both divisions and Palowski was the queen of determination. However,
Melissa Little
Little was too strong defeating Palowski in the finals of both the 9-Ball (7-1) and 8-Ball (4-1). The Open 8-Ball division’s top 32 was a virtual who’s who in pool. The final board was chocked full of top young guns including, U.S. Mosconi Cup Team rookie Oscar Dominguez, Texan Sylver Ochoa, NCS 8-Ball Champion Brandon Shuff and phenom Brendan Crocket. However regardless of that firepower it was Hall of Fame member and legend Earl “The Pearl” Strickland who took 1st place. This is the first major U.S event “The Pearl” has won in a couple of years showing, at age 47, he still “has it”. CSI wishes to thank the following sponsors and supporters of the U.S. Bar Table Championships, The Terrible’s Sands Regency Casino Hotel (www.sandsregency.com), Diamond Billiard Products (www.diamondbilliards.net), Simonis Cloth (www.simoniscloth. com), Aramith (www.saluc.com), and The Action Report (www. theactionreport.com). WBCA REGIONALS a row, including four hill-hill matches over two days to secure their spot in the finals. The finals began at 6:00 pm Sunday evening. By this time most people had headed home and the crew had come in to start breaking the tables down, quite a different atmosphere than the hundreds of players that had filled the room the rest of the week. Bet Something had won five matches on Sunday to reach the finals, while Have Cues Will Travel had secured their spot 22 hours earlier on Saturday evening. In the first set, Bet Something looked to be a little more comfortable on the tables and took the first set 13-6 to force a second and deciding set. Bet Something once again raced out to a lead of 11-6 and looked to be on the verge of taking the tournament easily. But Have Cues Will Travel did not come all the way from Eastern Washington to give up without a fight and clawed back to even the score at 11-11. This was going to be Bet Something’s day, as they took the next two racks and secured the championship 13-11 and won the $2,750 winner’s check. The 2nd Chance tournaments gave the entrants who didn’t make the money a second chance. In the Open Scotch Doubles, Bob Robbins/Katie Moses and Jon Letsom/ Laurie Dawkins tied for 1st place. Bill Ermatinger stormed through the 47-player bracket in the Open A 2nd Chance to win over Paul Ward. In the Men’s Open B 2nd chance, 67 players signed up for the single elimination tournament. John Marshall finished 1st and Jason Patrick took 2nd place. Yukon Jacks, from Emerald Valley League, won the 2nd Chance Open Team Event. This Championship Tournament made Western BCA history, with its first Junior participant who qualified in the new Junior Leagues that are starting up within established local leagues. Although there wasn’t a Junior division, Tyler Amos, 18, played in his first Western BCA 8-Ball Championship tournament as an Open B player and he gave as good as he got.

MONTOUR CAPTURES CHAMPIONSHIP By Suzanne Smith
It was a beautiful weekend, so why not head indoors? March 20-21, 2010, 41 women came out to compete at the Washington State Championships at the Golden Fleece in Kenmore, WA, the opening event for the NWPA’s 11th season. With $1500 added by Askar Ahmed and the Golden Fleece, payouts were higher, including paid entry and airfare to the WPBA’s US Open in Norman, Oklahoma this July. Additional funding for the event, including a $250 added 2nd chance tournament on Sunday, came from a custom cue donation by Dave Jones and the three new NWPA tour sponsors BDA, SanMar, and Ozone Billiards. (bdainc. com, sanmar.com, ozonebilliards.com) Not only did many of the tour regulars come to play, but there was also a slough of new women players, and one lady returning from the past. Players new to the tour included Jackie Karol from Boulder, CO, Natasha Hook from Oregon City, OR, Jana Montour from Hobbema Alberta (maiden name Smallboy had played one stop in 2003), Anthea Morin from Hobbema, Alberta (Jana’s cousin), Sarah Meyers-Mitchell and Claire Lewis from Portland, OR, Talya Makus and Aimee Chou from Seattle, WA, and Jenni Reese from Renton, WA. The NWPA would like to welcome all of these ladies, along with our returning tour regulars, and are hopeful for an exciting 2010 season. The tournament was played on 9 9-foot Diamonds tables and shot clocks were out in force as the NWPA tried to keep the full schedule moving forward. Additionally, the NWPA, in hopes of preparing its players for the WPBA, opted to utilize an all ball foul format during the final three matches of the event. On Sunday morning, the 41 woman field had been narrowed to 12. On the A-side, Cindy Sliva and Kit Dennis and Kathy Stanley and Mary Hopkin squared off to get to the hot seat match. Cindy Sliva would advance past Kit (7-5) as would Kathy Stanley past Mary (7-6). Cindy then defeated Kathy 7-4 in the point match to earn her opportunity to play for the coveted US Open spot. TOURNAMENT PAYOUTS 1st $563 2nd $375 3rd $260 4th $200 5th/6th $120 7th/8th $90 9th-12th $80 13th-16th $60
The Final: Cindy Sliva vs. Jana Montour Cindy Sliva path to the Final: Anthea M. (4), Kim H. (6), Shelby L. (3), Suzanne S. (1), Kit D. (5), Kathy S. (4) Jana Montour path to Final: June M. (3) Straight out of the gate, both players appeared to have some nerves as uncharacteristic misses
Jana Montour and Cindy Sliva
resulted in both Cindy and Jana jockeying for better position to get through racks. Tied at 4-4, it would seem that this final was destined for a hill-hill battle, but Cindy had other plans as she ended up taking advantage of a few mistakes late in the racks of games 9, 10, and 11 to take a 7-4 lead in this race to 9. Jana opted to take her break and regroup. Upon her return, she would grind through games 12, 13, and 14 to tie things up at 7-7. Game 15: CS breaks dry. JM plays safe on the 1, but leaves an edge. CS misses cut on 1 and leaves a long, straight, stop shot on the 1, which JM misses. CS pockets 1 and 2, but leaves herself jacked up over the 4, forcing her to play safe. JM kicks at the 3 and ends up making a 3-6 combination, then making a near 90
degree cut on 3 to get shape on the 4. JM landed on the wrong side of the ball and ends up throwing the 4 in with follow to have the cue ball deflect forward. JM came up short on shape to the 5 and was forced to play safe, which she didn’t get. CS pockets a tough cut to the side, then runs the 7 ball down the rail, then missed a reverse-angle cut on the 8. JM missed the 8 too, but leaves CS with only a safe or bank shot. CS opts to attempt the throw shot on the 8, and the cue ball goes 2 rails and scratches. JM runs out and reaches the hill first. Game 16: JM breaks and pockets the 8 ball. JM opts to play safe, but runs into the 7 ball leaving CS with an open shot on the 1 (JM waves her arm in disgust.) CS pockets the 1, but ends up caroming off the 5 ball and scratching in the side. JM runs out the rack to win the first NWPA tour stop of 2010 and earn her professional debut at the US Open. Congratulations to Cindy Sliva on her 2nd place finish. Jana’s goals include playing on the WPBA and she plans on playing the entire NWPA season to hopefully earn her spot at the 2011 Regional Tour Championship. She is off to a great start, and the NWPA looks forward to being a part of her journey. I spoke with Jana briefly after the event to see what she had been up to since her last NWPA event in 2003. Jana took a couple of years off after a pretty serious car accident resulted in both hips being injured. In the last couple years, along with recovery, she has welcomed her fifth child into the world and has been shooting with a local Alberta team. Welcome back to the NWPA, Jana, and what a great start to your return. 9 ladies returned to participate in the $250 added Second Chance tournament. Race to 3 matches were played after the random draw. Natasha Hook would end up taking top honors over Fran Johnson, congratulations ladies.

JAMBOREE WEEKEND BARTLESON & BARNES
By Tom Suarez Tournament Director There was a ‘Great crowd’ for the entire day. Hard Times people really do support their One Pocket events. The spectators were in the stands watching the matches until the finals at Midnight-thirty. The Rail wasn’t disappointed with the performance of the players. Rafael Martinez can put on a show all by himself, but in Northern California, there are some other great One Pocket players. Robert Aldana’s straight ball pocketing shooting style was evident enough during his matches that few opponents had a chance. In the Finals Rafael, who had spent more time on the left side of the board than usual, was defeated by Mr. Aldana. The 9 Ball event was easily won by Mr. Martinez. BLOW AWAY BILLINGS
Wendy Bartleson, Roland Barnes
We had a great turn out for the Kings Korner Blind Draw Doubles Tournament in Billings, MT, on Saturday March 20th. Some of Billings best players turned out to compete in this monthly round robin event. This tournament, held on the third Saturday of the month, pairs partners with a blind draw. It takes players with execellent shooting and stratagy skills to come out on top in this scotch doubles Gene Niles, Shane Mickleson competition. Wendy Bartleson and Roland Barnes rose to the occasion and blew away their competion with only one loss the whole night to take first place. Shane Mickleson and Gene Niles had an equally impressive performance with only two losses, ending up in second place. In third place, Mike Guzman and Darrel Frickel squeezed by Bill Luscombe and Sue Miller who took fourth. There were lots of exciting Mike Guzman, Darrel Frickel matches and hard fought games. In the end, though, everyone had a great time. As always, the Billings players are great sports who really know how to have fun and perfect the game of 8 ball at the same time. I want to extend my thanks and appreciation for all the players that continue to show up for our tournaments, play in the leagues, and support the game here in Billings.

2010 One Pocket Hall of Fame Dinner Voting is now complete for this year's class of One Pocket & Bank Pool Hall of Fame inductees. Our 6th annual Hall of Fame dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, January 26, during the upcoming Derby City Classic, and advance reservations are now available. The One Pocket Hall of Fame is pleased to announce this year’s class of inductees in the categories of One Pocket, Bank Pool and Lifetime Pool in Action. This year we have two One Pocket inductees, the well travelled professional player, Jose Parica, and the outspoken legend of pool, the late Rudolf ‘Fats’ Wanderone, AKA ‘Minnesota Fats’. Our Banks inductee this year is the aptly named Glenn ‘Piggy Banks’ Rogers, from Chicago, Illinois. The One Pocket HOF is pleased to present this year’s Lifetime Pool in Action award to the legendary player, backer and aficionado of action, Seattle Washington’s Harry Platis. Harry’s name has been synonymous with pool action for more than forty years. Even as he built a successful law career he has maintained an impressively competitive game and a willingness to mix it up with champions for big money, both as a player and a backer. Jose Parica, known as the leader of the Philippine invasion, has long since adopted both the USA as his home, and One Pocket as his game. He is a former Derby City One Pocket champion, as well as a champion or runner up in seemingly dozens of other One Pocket tournaments from coast to coast. ‘Minnesota Fats’ of course, became the most recognized name in pool in the years after The Hustler, the movie, and the Johnston City tournaments provided him a spotlight that was tailor made for his natural bravado and hustler persona. While knowledgeable pool historians generally rank his game a notch below the top players, that still made him a very good One Pocket player in his prime. Even as his game declined and his fame spread, Fats never failed to talk up One Pocket as the true test for champions, and of course Fats could talk, so the world listened and learned about One Pocket. His name will forever be associated with the game and the One Pocket Hall of Fame is proud to welcome him. ‘Piggy Banks’ Rogers comes from a long tradition of Chicago banking greats, from Javanley ‘Youngblood’ Washington and ‘Cannonball’ Chapman, to ‘Bugs’ Rucker and Freddy 'The Beard' Bentivegna; the torch has been passed to another Chicago legend of Bank Pool.

The Competition was tuff with Vancouver's Champion Stan Tourangeau pulling off 1st place in both 9 & 8 ball events. We kicked off our 2010 Spring Utah Open Pool tournament March 5, 6, & 7 with two 9 ball events. Men's and Scotch Double teams were the Friday night openers. Stan Tourangeau finished first in the Men’s 9 ball single elimination sudden death event by defeating Dago Huber 7 to 6. The Scotch Doubles 9 ball team event filled up very quickly and had a Stan Tourangeau, 1st place open 8 ball waiting list. At the end of the night, John Bemis and Jessica Durbin were waiting on the hill. Bobby Atkins and Wendi Micari won their first set against the Champions but were unable to defeat Bemis and Durbin in their second set racing to 3 games. In our handicapped 8 1st place Scotch Doubles ball event Stan Jessica Durbin, John Bemis (not pictured) To u r a n g e a u (Vancouver, Canada) played with a handicap of 8 defeated Bobby Atkinson (Clearfield, Utah) 8 to 2.
