THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP Shane Van Boening has won the Players Championship at the Super Billiards Expo and has sent yet another strong message that he is the cream of the American crop of pro pool players. When Shane gets close to the finals there is just no stopping him. Even a long trip throughout the one-loss side (Shane lost early to Brian Brekke) cannot cause his game to weaken or his heart to lose spirit. On Sunday Van Boening swept aside the rest of the best as if they were mere mortals trying to exist in the realm of the gods. Raj Hundal got the message first when he just sat and watched as Van Boening picked the meat off of his bones and tossed him to the scrap heap 10-1. Hundal was no more a participant in that match than was the kid in the third row of the stands. Darren Appleton would fare little better. The two-time US Open champion was dismantled and destroyed by the rack-running ability of the South Dakota Kid. Obviously dismayed by Van Boening's ability to control the table and deny an opponent any opportunity to rally, Appleton found himself a 10-2 loser against Van Boening who only appeared to get stronger with each stroke. Van Boening had one more hill to climb. An undefeated and confident Stevie Moore was waiting for him. That confidence would take an early beat-down as Van Boeing wasted no time in establishing a 7-0 lead in the final race to 13 games. Moore stayed cool and fought well enough to bring the score to 12-6, but Van Boening on the hill is a tough task and when Moore fouled early in the final rack to give ball in hand to Van Boening it was the end. Shane Van Boening won his third Players Championship with a 13-6 victory against Moore. Shane is now on track for what could become a record year. Prior to this victory he nabbed both the Derby City 9-Ball and One-Pocket events, taking Master of the Table honors with those wins. The Kid also commands the short track stuff. He won the US Bar Box Championship Open 10-Ball division held by CSI in Reno. All of this comes on the heels of a final quarter of 2011 that presented Van Boening with victories at the Steve Mizerak Championship, Turning Stone XVIII and at the Ocho Open.

The Man Behind the Super Billiards Expo BY: DON “CHEESE” AKERLOW
The 20th Annual Super Billiards Expo (SBE) was held March 8-11, 2012 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Philadelphia, PA. Once again brought to you by Allen Hopkins Productions and run in conjunction with the TAP Rally in the Valley. This has become a huge event! I called Allen to find out his opinion on some of the things that were concerning the players and of course the success of the event. The first Super Billiards Expo was held in Secaucus, NJ at the Meadowlands Convention Center and when I asked Allen how the event has grown he responded, “Enormously! When we started in 1993 we started with 40 pool tables and about 27 booths. Some exhibitors took two booths so it was less than 27 actual exhibitors. We had the open event and I don’t know if I had the kids there then. I know I didn’t have the Seniors or the Super Seniors, didn’t have the Pro-Am. I think it was just the open event.” The SBE moved the next year to the Valley Forge Convention Center and remained there for the next 18 years expanding and taking up more space at the center until they finally had to move to their current location, a facility of over 200,000 square feet. A short 6 mile move down the road to a facility that is twice the size of the Valley Forge Convention Center - plenty of room to grow and plenty of parking. The SBE was informed after the 2011 Expo that the convention center was being closed and has now been renovated into a casino. So there was no possible way that they could stay.

This is a short 4 day event but is packed with wall to wall pool. According to Allen, “it’s actually like pool heaven. All the best pool players in the world are here, all the best cue makers in the world are here, all the best table people are here.” Allen brought in 180 Diamond tables for the amateur events and 13 Diamond tables for the pro event and practice tables. And attendance was astounding, Allen said there were 979 players in the Open Division, 175 in the Women’s Division, 365 in the Senior Division and 157 in the Super Senior Division for the Amateur Events. Junior events 17 & under had 64 players and the 12 & under Division had 50, not to mention the 32 player ProAm Bar Box Event and 68 players in the Diamond Open 10-Ball Professional Players Championship”. Besides these events you have the WPA World Artistic Championship, Fury 14-1 Challenge and the Challenge of Champions 3 Cushion Tournament. That takes us through all that Allen Hopkins offers, you also have to factor in 160 TAP teams of 8 players each for a total of almost 3200 players. You can see why this could be considered heaven for a pool player. A unique addition for the players that attended the SBE was the phone app created by Allen Hopkins Jr. It was available for both iPhone and Android phones. Allen had my call on speaker, when Allen Jr. spoke about the app. Through the app you locate vendors, find their booth on the floor plan and get their contact information. You could also check out tournament information and brackets and scan the vendors QR Codes for special offers. Allen Jr said he also had a text message feature available. This will be a big plus going forward. Each year the show changes a little from the year before. New problems arise and are addressed, corrected or accounted for in some way. This year being in a new venue was a challenge for the staff of the SBE but they are aware of the problems and are working with the expo center to make things better next year. Some of the issues were lighting, food vendors, restrooms and a secure area for the vendors. I have found in life, when you think you have everything planned down to the last detail, something happens and you have to change and adjust and make the best of the situation. Everything is a work in progress. I can attest to that through the 4 pool magazines that we publish and you can be assured that both Allen and his staff will next year make these problems disappear. Allen had high praises for his staff, the players, exhibitors and the attendees at the show. The town of Valley Forge provided shuttle service from the Radisson (the host hotel) to the convention center during the show. All in all the show was another success and the problems that did arise are being taken care of for next year. RALLY IN THE VALLEY
The first day of the TAP agenda was a National Meeting with an impressive attendance of licensees, as it was standing room only. This meeting was conducted by Founder, President and CEO Loyd Schonter, covering all details of the present and the future drive for TAP. It is very understandable that most discussions in this room were confidential and for only the TAP family however I am sure the Billiard Industry will be more than impressed with where he is leading the TAP Organization. TAP proudly announced a new relationship at this meeting with McDermott Cues which was attended by their Representatives Larry Liebl Executive Vice President and Jayme Cernika Customer Service and Special Events Manager. They introduced their impressive line to the TAP family. McDermott also contributed $10,000.00 in cues and other McDermott products to the Rally in the Valley events in addition to this they had their Instructor nearby demonstrating the abilities of their cue line. While the National meeting was coming to an end the TAP Singles event was kicking off with record breaking registrations in all brackets. 7 handicap singles had 36 players, 6 singles with 64 players, 5 singles with 80 players, 4 singles with 77 players and the 2 and 3 singles had 42 players. At 8 am on Friday March 9th,

the 8-ball and for the first time the 9-Ball “Dream Team Events� kicked off totaling 176 eight person teams. This was another record breaking event for team counts. As always at TAP events keeping you warmed up is a must, so the minis ran in the evening of each day to make sure your game stayed in tune. Then Sunday March 11th brought the final rounds only to close up another historical event leaving the TAP player with memories and conversation that will be with them for years to come. A room once filled with players from across the United States and Canada is left with only the footprints of the TAP Pool Player. And as each year goes by that foot print is getting bigger and bigger. For the first time in many years, TAP also had another presence at the expo with a TAP sales and information booth. This also saw heavy activity throughout the entire weekend. People interested in TAP got to see firsthand the new innovations that TAP has done to their handicapping system known as Pool-Net and all of the features that no other league can provide to their members. Prospective TAP licensees were amazed at what they saw and how user friendly the system is. Many times during the weekend people were often heard saying, "That's cool or Talk about Tech Savvy". On behalf of all of us here at TAP, we would like to congratulate Allen Hopkins on

a job well done and as is customary here at TAP when a licensee does well.... Allen, you and your staff get a huge "Atta Boy" from TAP!! We would also like to Thank All of our Staff and Volunteers for once again making this TAP Event a huge success. Thus showing “One Team, One Goal” truly is our Family motto. Let us not forget McDermott Cues, we are looking forward to our new relationship and happy to have them as a part of the TAP Family. Over $107,000 was paid out with the singles events paid back at 100%.

Colin Brandt/Chicago, IL You should write about “Having Heart!” Too many players now rely on handicapping systems and refuse to play the big tournaments with the big dogs because “they can’t win”! Little do they realize that in order to get to that level you need to play with that level!!!

Colin, as pool players we are perceived as living a sub cultured lifestyle and in a lot of aspects we do… We have so many subdivisions of our subculture.
So to talk about having heart is not really fair, because as a unit I think we are all in love with this game called pool, otherwise we wouldn’t play at all!

Now for improving our games I do think it’s important to challenge yourself to other aspects of our subdivisions! Personally I really don’t like playing 1-pocket but that is because I’m not that good at it. But at least I try.

Many beginning players have two speeds of shots hard and too hard. They have hard time with anything below “firm.” This lack of range often causes problems on soft safeties and rolling shots where the least amount of roll-through is needed. Here are two drills to improve accuracy at the low end of your speedometer. They are from the Video Encyclopedia of Pool Practice (VEPP), a series of DVDs that I recently worked on with “Dr. Dave” Alciatore.

The bottom drill is one I originally learned from Tom Riccobene, an instructor in Albuquerque, and covered in a 2006 column. The goals is to start with 8 balls on the line and hit each one a slightly longer distance without any ball hitting the end rail. (Take cue ball in hand for each shot.) If you do 8, move on to one more ball. If a ball doesn’t pass the previous ball, start over with one fewer balls. 15 is really tough. The second drill is simpler to set up and score. You start with the cue ball in the jaws of the side pocket and the object ball (15) a short distance away and straight towards the other side pocket. The goal is to make the ball in the side pocket but your score is how many shots it takes to get there. (No cushion contact is required.) You get no score if you fail to hit the 15 on any shot along the way so you have to hit the ball on every shot. A good beginning score is 4 shots to get to the other side. A pro can stretch the drill out for a few dozen shots.

To play shots like these, there are several techniques that may help. If you normally have a very low stance, try standing up a little higher. This will help your depth perception to better see the distance between the balls. Try for a specific goal for the ending spot for the object ball. Of course you should have a specific goal in mind on all shots, but on these very short shots try for quarter-inch accuracy. You might not get it right away, but if you never try for it, you will never get it. Use a shorter bridge than normal. If your usual bridge is 15 inches long, it’s hard to drive the ball less than a table length. A short ball-to-bridge-hand distance will make sure your backstroke is short and that’s the easiect way to turn down the speed. You can also elevate a little or use some draw to slow the cue ball down. Experiment with both of these and do a complete crossing with each of these techniques. If you get close to mastery of the single ball drill, you can get a wider variety of shots by alternating very soft and medium pace shots. That is, try to barely move the object ball on the odd shots and move it eight or ten inches on the even shots. Or, you can turn the shot the long way on the table -- try for more than 30 shots.

Mike’s Massive Draw Shot People have asked me forever to explain my technique for drawing the cue ball long distances. Mike’s Massive Draw Shot will reveal my secrets and give you an objective test fro determining the power of your draw stroke.
The first step is to have excellent equipment. That means a cue you are completely confident in and a tip that is in perfect condition. I recommend a dime radius because it allows a little more of the tip’s surface to contact the cue ball. This is critical because you will need to strike the cue ball as close to the miscue zone as possible for maximum draw. Place an object ball a diamond from Pocket E. (Note: some of you, including left-handers, may be more comfortable shooting the shot on the opposite side of the table.) Position the cue ball about two inches from the edge of Pocket C. If you find this is too much of a stretch, move the cue ball closer to Pocket A until you feel comfortable. I use a 12-inch bridge, which is almost exactly the distance between the diamonds. Position your tip as low as possible without entering the miscue zone. Use a firm closed bridge. Make sure your shooting arm is very relaxed. You will need to use an extremely hard stroke. Take several smooth warm up strokes to establish your rhythm. On your final stroke, be sure to let your elbow drop as you accelerate through the shot. This will keep your cue level and prevent it from dipping into the cloth. Make sure to avoid putting any right english on the cue ball as this can greatly alter the cue ball’s direction. Let your follow through extend unrestricted. The diagram show several possible results. My personal best is 2 3/8 table lengths. The cue ball will stop at or near the end rail (1 7/8 table lengths) when I hit the shot really pure. A good pro will draw about 1 3/8 table lengths while a good amateur will draw about one table length. (Note: all measurements are from the objet ball’s location.) You should see Larry Nevel play this shot. He might even draw it further than I do. The ideal conditions for maximum draw are almost new cloth and high humidity. The almost new cloth works better than new cloth because on new cloth the cue ball spins too much in place and loses much of its energy. The humidity give the cue ball a boinging action when it bounced off the rails.

CONFIDENCE, LUCK AND CONCENTATTION Tim Miller
Much has been written about confidence. In fact, I wrote about this time honored skill in my book I CAME TO WIN. Some say you need confidence to win and others say you need to win to gain confidence. In this case, two different opinions and both are right.
I thought I would miss every single one of them! I had no confidence, no concentration, and did not think I was going to be lucky. I had something better. I had something we all need in pocket billiards. I had the ability to stand over a shot and let the results be whatever they want to be. Since I did not know if I was going to make the shot and I did not know if I was going to miss the shot, I might as well do what I can do and that is to look good shooting the shot. This is why the guy in our foursome thought I had confidence and great concentration skills. I acted like I make these putts all the time. I do that in pool. I act as if it is an easy shot.
This is not a feel good program. This is the real deal. You will be working with the monk for over four months. You will be working step by step to build the skills at nine ball that your opponent does not have. You will master the important moves this game calls for. You will become a master nine ball player and play better nine ball than you have every played this game before.
My chapter on confidence suggests you learn to play without confidence. Who really controls confidence anyways? And who really controls concentration. How many times do we decide to lose our concentration? We suddenly lose our confidence just when we need it the most. We can agree that confidence and concentration are subject to their own whim. Let’s learn to play without them.

On Saturday, March 24, 2012, American Legion Post #129 in Oak Harbor, WA, hosted its annual Partners 8-Ball Tournament. 13 teams played for $1,975 in prize money, awarded to 4 places. Free, secure Wi-Fi is now permanently available in our club. Due to Lincoln City now, for the first time, conflicting with this tournament's traditional 3rd weekend in March, we shifted this back one week, hoping to draw good participation. However, we were double-whammied by post league-season tournaments in Everett and Bellingham. We figure that this cut participation by at least 8 teams that normally show up for this tournament. The American Legion will cancel this tournament the next time fewer than 16 teams sign up to play, as this activity must be cost-effective for the Legion to host, add money and not charge table-time for the greens fees collected. Fortunately, because of the small field size, we were able to finish this tournament in one day, instead of the full weekend we usually use. Our tournament was played on 4 - 4x8 tables, all located at the American Legion Hall. Even though only 13 teams showed up, the American Legion still added $300 to the prize fund. $20 greens fees were charged to each of 13 teams, amounting to $260, and, as has been customary, these were also added entirely back to the prize fund. So, the Legion added a total of $560 to the prize money this year, versus the total of $520 that the club added to this tournament last year with 16 teams.
In spite of the small field size, competition was still fierce, with one Grand Master and at least 5 other Masters playing. But, when the dust settled, the cake was taken by two Skagit Valley area teams consisting entirely of Open-A players. 1st Place was captured in a hard-fought, 3-game comeback at the end of the finals match, by Dane Ireland and Joe Landi of Mt. Vernon. Larry Binschus and Phil Squires of the Sedro-Woolley area hung on for 2nd Place. Miguel Morfin and Cody Clark of the Lynnwood area, last year's 2nd Place finishers, slid to 3rd Place, and the tournament was rounded out with 4th Place going to LT and Jay Siangco of Tacoma. Our gratitude goes to Chuck Hassler, who organized the tournament, and to the staff at the American Legion, most of which consisted of volunteers, for its wonderful support. And finally, our sincerest gratitude goes out to all of the players who took the time out of otherwise busy lives to come and visit our fair village.

BY ROBBIN IRREDALE AND REBECCA EASLEY There’s never a dull moment at a Western BCA Tournament. The 17th Annual Western BCA 8-Ball Championships made history in more ways than one during the week of March 12-18th, 2012, at Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City, OR. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor wind, nor hail, nor tsunami, not even power outages will deter this event from its appointed mission: to crown the best of the best in the Pacific Northwest! Last year, players at this event had to contend with a tsunami warning; this year, Lincoln City, was hit by one of the worst winter storms in history on Tuesday night, dumping 4-6 inches of snow on the coast and winds reported at 70 mph. The storm knocked power out all over town, including the casino. Chinook Winds Casino’s backup generator immediately kicked in and kept the tournament room half-lit for several hours, until power was fully restored. Some tables still had light; some didn’t. Play was temporarily suspended and the tournament fell behind schedule. The storm shorted out the air conditioning system, turning the convention center into a hot box for the following two days. With a record 1,258 players in attendance, the tension level in the room was very high. And of course, the escalators were not working! Thanks to the Chinook Winds staff and Bad Boys Billiard Productions, the tournament got back on track to finish before midnight on Sunday. However, none of these issues affected Grand Master Cindy Sliva, who made Western BCA history by becoming the first-ever Triple Crown Master Champion!! Diamond Tables and Lights were once again brought in by Bad Boys Billiard Productions and Rail2Rail Productions provided the top-notch comprehensive live streaming of this event, broadcasting every match played on the “TV table” and the finals of the events. With the other vendors setting up, Billiards 911, Billiards & Barstools, The Parlor, Hustlin’ USA and NWPA (Northwest Women’s Pool Association), along with the Western BCA Podium and store, the stage was set for one of the most memorable regional championship tournaments ever! Play began Monday morning with Mixed Scotch Doubles. Master Mixed Scotch Doubles started out with 46 pairs battling it out for a spot in the finals. Making it through the Winner’s side were Sean Lewis (LTD) and Cindy Sliva (NPL). They would eventually meet repeat finalists/champions Mike Stevens and Cindy Doty (both NPL) in the final. Mike/Cindy played through the winner’s side until Kimberly Kirk (LTD) and Paul Marquez (NPL) (who would finish 3rd) sent them to the back side. Undaunted, they played their way into the final and a chance for another title to add to their collection. Sean/Cindy had other plans. They split the first 4 games before Sean/Cindy took control. Game 5 was a game of fits and starts with Sean/Cindy coming out on top (3-2). Game 6 started with Cindy D. breaking, the pair running two balls and Mike having no choice but to play a safety. Sean returned the favor only he did it better. Cindy D. fouled giving Cindy S. ball in

hand. She made her shot, got a needed breakout and started the run out (4-2). Sean broke game 7 to begin their table run (5-2) and they are on the hill. Mike broke game 8 leaving Cindy D. on the rail with not much to shoot at. Sean took a solid and started a mini-run but stalled when he made two balls in the same shot taking away any shape for Cindy S. Mike/Cindy ran down to the 8-Ball ending in Mike’s uncharacteristic miss. Sean made a long straight shot up table but left Cindy S. short, with a tough back cut on their 1st Women’s Grand Master: last ball. Not only did Cindy Sliva she go for it and make it, she got perfect shape on the 8-Ball for Sean. Match over. Mike/Cindy had to settle for 2nd place and $1400. Sean/Cindy walked away champs and $1850 richer. For Cindy Sliva, this win was very special, as it marks her first Championship title and the first jewel in the elusive Triple Crown. Watch for Cindy and Sean later in the championships; they are not finished. Open Mixed Scotch Doubles was up from 118 entrants in 2011 to 127 entrants this year. Mark Fenn and Stephanie Karpins (PCGP) played their way through 7 matches to take the point. Tim Desmarais and Larenda Davis (CWY) faltered one match from the big board courtesy of Mark/Steph. Never-say-die couple Tim/ Larenda fought back to the finals and a rematch with Mark/Steph. Tim/Larenda, coming off back to back matches, were warmed up and took advantage of Mark/ Steph who had been sitting and waiting. Tim/Larenda took the first leg of the final by a score of 5-2 and forced the double dip. Unfortunately, it was their turn to have their momentum halted. The girls were holding up the Women’s Open Singles and had to go play some singles. The final would not be resumed until Thursday at 12:30a. Starting even this time, it was a much different match with both teams hungry for the victory. Tim/Larenda took the first 3 games. Mark/Steph roared

back to take the next 3 and the match was tied 3-3. Tim/Larenda said, “Enough of this!” Steph broke, making the 9-ball but Mark missed the 11 and the table was still opened. Tim/Larenda took the stripes and ran them out for the hill (4-3). Tim dry broke game the last game and Mark/Steph ran 6 balls, including two nice combos. Unfortunately, the shape on the 13-ball was poor and it was left hanging in the corner pocket. Tim/Larenda ran 5 balls before missing a long back cut on the 3-ball. Steph then made the13 but was unable to get shape on the 8-ball so Mark played a safety. Larenda countered with a safety, as did Steph. Not good enough. Tim/ Larenda were able to run out for the match. Mark/Steph got 2nd and $1100. Tired but happy, Tim/Larenda took the title and $1450. The Women’s Master Singles final was between 2011 8-Ball finalist and runnerup Mary Hopkin (NPL) coming through the winner’s side and Quinault Beach Women’s Master Singles Champ Regene Lane (LTD). Navigating through a field of 37, Regene nearly made it to the semis but had to win 3 matches on the back side to gain a seat in the final. This match can be summed up in two words – Mary Hopkin. Mary just refused to give Regene a chance to get any rhythm or momentum going. After splitting the first two games, it was Mary all the way to the title. Regene had her chances but just never got going and Mary never faltered. Solid play on Mary’s part including a table run and Regene’s inability to capitalize on opportunities sealed her fate. Regene had to settle for 2nd place and $610 while Mary took home the champion’s plaque and $950. Working through a field of 64 Master Men, Sean Lewis (LTD) and Luke Thomas (CC) made it through the front side of the Men’s Master Singles bracket unscathed until running into each other in the semifinal. Sean gained the hot seat to await either Luke or whoever would emerge from the back side. Russell Cearley (EV) fought the good fight but Luke prevailed to force a rematch of the semifinal. The two started out playing an uncharacteristically defensive game featuring 8 safeties early on before Sean took advantage of a missed 6-Ball to run out for the win. Game 2 was the exact opposite. Offense all the way, Luke broke and ran all the solids before hooking himself on the 8-ball, kicking at it and scratching. Sean wasted no time in running out and taking game 2. In game 3, Sean again capitalized on a Luke Thomas mistake to run out. Luke then showed us why he was worthy of the final by running 3 tables to even the score at 3-3. The men then split the next two games (4-4). Luke gave up game 9 when he scratched and gave Sean the opportunity to run out. In game 10, Luke dry broke to hand Sean a classic table run. Luke had his chances in game 11 but just couldn’t pull it out so had to settle for 2nd place and $880. Sean walked away with the match (7-4), his 2nd Champion title, two jewels for his crown and the winner’s check for $1300. At the same time his scotch partner was making her own mark on the Women’s Grand Master field. The Grand Masters Challenge took on a different format from last year; instead of a

round-robin event, the GMs played a special triple elimination bracket. This type of format assures that there are no tied finishes. On the Women’s GM side, Cindy Sliva took command of the event, starting with beating last year’s 8-Ball GMC Champ, Linda Carter. Cindy lost only one match to Kimberly Kirk (2nd place), but beat her three more times and toppled some of the very best women GMs in the Northwest: Liz Cole (3rd place), Carissa Biggs (4th place), Cindy Doty, Andrea Saenz-Maes and Karla Bagley-Tias) to become the Women’s Grand Master Champion and earning jewel #2 in her quest for the ultimate crown. On the Men’s Side of the GM event, Stan Tourangeau, 2012 US Bar Table 9-Ball Champion, stormed through his competition unscathed to win the coveted title of Men’s Grand Master Champion. Facing such formidable opponents as the other 5 Grand Masters (Rich Geiler, Dan Louie, Eddie Mataya, Damian Pongpanik and Don Wirtaman) and the four top Masters (Darrold Crain, Marvin Holmes, Steve Lingelbach and Paul Marquez), Stan showed no fear as he played “lights out,” not giving up a single match for the undefeated win. Don Wirtaman took 2nd place, Rich Geiler finished 3rd, Dan Louie settled for 4th place and newcomer Marvin Holmes got 5th place. The trophies for the GMC Champions were beautiful handcrafted, blown-glass floats made by The Edge Art Gallery in South Beach, OR. [Footnote: This is the first time ever at a Western BCA Regional Tournament that the Master Scotch Doubles winners both went on to win their individual singles events.] The Men’s A Singles finalists were no strangers to each other. Both Lee Noble (LTD) and Stanley Ottinger Jr. (EV) made it to the finals board from the winner’s side but their first match there was against each other. Lee won that one and went on to the point to wait for an opponent in the final. Stanley made his way there by taking his next three matches and the rematch final was on. Stanley decided to make it a double dip by taking the first final match. The 2nd final match started much as the 1st ended, all Stanley. Lee found himself falling further and further behind until Stanley was on the hill and Lee had but 1 game. Lee rallied to get back in the match and have a shot at the title. With both men on the hill, Lee broke but put the 8-ball in and elected to rerack/rebreak. This time the 8-ball stayed up and he pocketed two solids and was able to run a few balls before getting out of shape and having to play a combo and missing but opening up Stanley’s 6-ball enough for him to safety back and snug Lee on his own ball. With nothing much to shoot at, Lee tried a safe but gave the table back to Stanley for the last time and watched Stanley run out to win the match. Lee took home the $830 2nd place check and Stanley left with the title of the best Men’s Open A Player and $1100. the final. Aric Twohy (LTD) sent Jerald Davenport (CC) to the back side for one match. Jerald beat Tuy Singharai (CPL) leaving Tuy in 3rd place ($470) and went on to the final. It was to be another double dip. Jerald took the first set. Aric was warmed up by then and took the 2nd set, the title and the $800 1st place check. Jerald, in 2nd place, received $600. The Women’s Open Singles final was a repeat of the Men’s B final. The eventual finalists, Jan Aust (COB) and Kristie Young (PCGP), met first in the semis. Jan sent Kristie to the back side for one match and waited for her to come back to play in the final. Kristie shot a very strong first match to take the 1st set and force a 2nd. Jan, however, prevailed to win 1st place and $800 while Kristie, finishing in 2nd place received $600. Men’s Senior Singles is always enjoyable to watch. Gentlemen and sly old foxes; they’ve been around long enough to show us some tricks. This final was no exception. Bill Ermatinger (NPL) made his way through the winner’s side, having to get by some tough competition including Quinault Beach Men’s Senior Singles Champ Chuck Hassler (LTD). Mike Jensen (NPL), however, chose a more difficult route to the finals, losing his second match and having to fight his way almost all the way through the back side. Mike knew he would have to double dip to get a shot at the crown and he did just that. In a close 5-3 match that included two Jensen table runs, Mike forced the second go round. Sadly, this final had to be split just as the Open Scotch Doubles final so the men could join their teams and keep that bracket from lagging too far behind. When the second half of the final was played it was a bit anticlimactic. Mike was hotter than a pistol and refused to give Bill a chance to get off the ground. It was all Mike Jensen. His journey to the shut out (5-0) included two table runs and two stunning jump shots along the way. A slightly shell-shocked Bill settled for 2nd place and $350 and a beaming Mike took the champion’s plaque and $500. The Women’s Senior Singles bracket featured 16 seasoned veterans. Again, both future finalists, Linda Thompson (INL) and Jean Bartholomew (NPL) met in the semis with Linda sending Jean to the back side for one match and then meeting her again in the final. This time, however, there would be no double dip. Linda took the title and $265 over Jean ($165). The Men’s Novice Singles featured 14 players testing the big tournament waters for the first time. Keeping the trend going, the two finalists, Dave Lillie (EV) and John Wallpe (LCC) met in the semis with John being sent to the back side for one match. Dave and John met again in the final. John took the 1st set to force the double dip and went on the take the title and the trophy. Both these gentlemen, plus 3rd place finisher David Lucia, will receive paid entry into the Men’s B Singles from Western BCA.
The Women’s Novice Singles was a hard fought battle between Jeanette Ritter (TC) from the winner’s side and Barbara Rosa (MTV) coming from the back side. Barbara held on to take the two-set final and the trophy. Both women will also receive paid entry into the next Women’s Open Singles, courtesy of Western BCA. Saturday, St. Patrick’s Day proved to be a day of awesome play and some fun side activities. Jason Boyd and Kristi Lemming from Mount Vernon, WA, got married in the Western BCA store, becoming the first couple in WBCA history to get married at a tournament. The two lovebirds wore matching WBCA event shirts, the bride sported a green veil, and their friends raised their cue sticks in a military-style salute. This is sure to be an anniversary that neither one will ever forget. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Boyd! Immediately following the wedding, WBCA conducted 2 raffle drawings. The first was for The St. Patrick’s Day pot-o-gold Raffle for $500. Josie LeRoy of Northwest Players league was at the end of that rainbow and happily took home the extra money. Next came the big raffle…McDermott Cues donated a beautiful Dubliner cue, with the famous G-Core Shaft® and their beautiful trademark shamrock inlays, to be raffled to help raise money to support the pool players. It was a very lucky day for LTD’s Linda Cyrus, whose name was drawn as the winner! Western BCA extends their heartfelt gratitude to McDermott Handcrafted Cues for their very generous donation! Back to the action on the pool tables, the Men’s/Mixed Master Team final was just what you’d expect, great shooting with some timely safety play thrown in when necessary. 15 solid Men’s Master teams played until just two were left standing, both eager for the title. Malarkey’s (Bobby Campbell, Eddie Mataya, Tommy Sliva, Clark Smith, Scott Thurston-all NPL) and Misfits (Ken Dodd [NPL], Bob Heckel [CC], Paul Marquez [NPL], Tommy Rossi [CC], Luke Thomas [CC]) met in the semifinals with Malarkey’s going to the back side for one match and then rejoining Misfits in the final. Alas, no double dip for Malarkey’s leaving them with 2nd place and $1575 to split. Misfits take the 1st place plaques and a check for $2675. Sean Lewis’ Team Louie’s Bunch finished 4th, denying Sean the triple win; but not so for his scotch doubles partner, Cindy Sliva. 17 Women’s Master Teams faced off for a chance at the 1st place check of $2100. As predicted, Loonies and Toonies (Regene Lane [LTD], Tamre’ Rogers [LTD], Cindy Sliva [NPL], Brenda Willis [LTD]) and NPL Chix (Cindy Doty [NPL], Mary
Hopkin [NPL], Diane Krause [NPL], Josie LeRoy [CPL]) met in the semis with Loonies and Toonies hanging on to the hot seat. NPL Chix came back but they were no match for the Can/Am girls. Led by Tamre’ Rogers and Cindy Sliva with 4 games each, L&T crushed the NPL Chix by a score of 13-4 to take the title and the $2100 check. NPL Chix had to be happy with $1460 and 2nd place. This win gives Cindy Sliva the third jewel in her Triple Crown! No other Master Player, man or woman, in the history of Western BCA, has achieved this tremendously impressive triple win. Cindy proved that she is a fierce force to be reckoned with in the Pacific Northwest pool world! She showed unwavering stamina in playing to the very end of each of her divisions, only giving up one match in all of her matches! Her opponents commended her remarkable talent, extraordinary graciousness and superb sportsmanship. When asked about how it felt to win, Cindy simply said, “I finally broke the 2nd place curse!” Since becoming a Master in 2007, Cindy has taken numerous second place finishes, but 1st place had eluded her thus far. Well no more 2nd places for this shining star; she smashed that curse with a sledge hammer! She will reign as the very best of the best in the Northwest until another Master player can match her Triple Crown! Personal note from the author: As a pool player in this organization and a true lover of this great sport, I view Cindy Sliva as the epitome of what all pool players should strive to be. I admire her amazing skills, never-ending fortitude, generous spirit, true sportsmanship and fierce competitiveness. A true Champion on so many levels! – Rebecca Easley The Men’s/Mixed Open Team field of 123 teams took to the tables Friday at 9am. By Sunday evening there were only two left. INL’s All In Balls Out (Wes Bledsoe, Dave Gest, Brian Kvasnicka, Randy Ohrstrom, Scott Schierman, Chris White) worked their way through the winner’s side to get to the hot seat. LTD’s Soundview Bar & Grill #2 (Cody Clark, Bill Irons, Loy Long, Kevin Ross, Ed Slade) almost made it undefeated to the big board but was sent to the back side one match short and battled back through four tough matches to get to the final. They weren’t finished. Soundview took the 1st set by a score of 13-4 led by Bill, Cody and Kevin with 4 games each and forcing the double dip. Soundview had to work a little harder the 2nd time around but took that match by a score of 13-8, with newcomer Kevin Ross shooting in the winning 8-Ball. Soundview took the plaques and a check for $2500. All In Balls Out split $2025. A total of 39 Women’s Open Teams played for bragging rights and the 1st place prize of $1600. Bartholomew, Adele Evans) lost their 2nd match to CPL’s Ballad Town Babes (Machelle Amore, Kristin Cambas, Melyssa Chasteen, Alfreda Amoyette), little knowing that they would be the team to make it to the hot seat. All they would have to do to get another shot at them was work their way back almost all the way through the back side. They did just that and the rematch was on. The Babes, led by Melyssa and Kristin with 5 and 4 wins respectively, were not interested in allowing a double dip and took care of the Futs 11-8 in one set, leaving them with 2nd place and $1220. The snow has melted and dust has settled on this very eventful tournament and a record $106,000 was awarded to the outstanding winners at the 17th Annual Western BCA 8-Ball Championships. As we close the history book on this tournament, one has to stop and truly appreciate what an awesome event this was, in spite of all the problems with the weather and power. History was made, records were broken and the sun finally came out to shine on Chinook Winds Resort and Casino, home of the biggest and best Regional 8-Ball tournament in the Northwest. The Western BCA volunteers will be back again in October for the 9-Ball Regional Championship Tournament…don’t miss it; you never know what could happen. The Diablo valley pool league started the series of monthly tournaments, which will prepare those teams getting ready to travel to the BCA and ACS Nationals tournaments coming up in the month of May.

Jason Williams and Shawn Modelo recently represented their skills and the DVPL well in other tournaments. -Jason Williams participant on Chet Itow Memorial 9 Ball Tournament where $3000 was added along with excellent quality of players. He ended up taking 4th for $550 loosing to Rodney Morris on the both sides. Some of the big names he defeated were Jose Parica and Rafael Martinez. -Shawn Modelo participated in Reno 8 Ball Tournament. She placed 5th and 6th in a field of 28 players for $150. She also placed 9th to 12th for $75 in a field of 46

Back at the Ranch
Lucky and I have been back to the Lucky Q Ranch only a few days. All after the California and Northwest trip, We had snow storms winds up to 100 miles an hour good to be somewhere nice for a while. We passed on going to Reno to the Bar Box Championships and to the WBCA Regional in Lincoln City. Both favorites of his…..We had been out on the road for a several weeks and I could see Lucky needed a rest. Lucky talked a lot on the drive to the ranch. It was mostly how impressed he was with Detroit John back in Portland pool hall. Nice guy! Thinks he made another good friend. Lucky hopes Detroit John starts playing pool more because like Lucky pool is something you can do no matter how old you get, Lucky is proof of that. I was starring out the kitchen window drinking a cup of hot fresh brewed coffee. Some of the best coffee I seemed to ever have, not sure why coffee is coffee but this must have been some imported high quality stuff….
roads to the office we went. The Doc’s place looked like a big home. We walked up to the office went inside few cars outside. It was dimly lit no over head lights on. Light was chiefly from a blazing log fire to warm the place and sun coming through the window...a small crowd sitting around waiting to see the doctor. Finally it was Lucky’s turn. I waited thumbing through some magazines. Over the years I have known Lucky I noticed he has aged. Like a fine wine but it hard to think that someday even I will be old like he is. I have benefited and learned so much being around him as has his friends and others who have come to know him through his stories. I am constantly being asked how like is… He always has said that “people have to decide what to do with the time they are given and make it good”, that sounds just like a phrase out of Lord of the Rings…

In the back yard was blooming white, pink, yellow flowers scattered among the well seeded grasses. An idyllic setting at the start of Spring... the radio on in the back ground and in the distance, the gentle chirping of a group of robins flying from one limb to another in the garden building nests in trees. The shinning sun just coming up over the snow tipped mountain top in the off in the distance. What a morning……… I thought this is living….. Lucky out in the back sitting at the table is reading a book while HUMMING to the tune on the radio “The Road Goes Ever I’ve got one more silver dollar...rolling his piece of straw in his mouth “ A figure in the grass sits up, looking straight at me looking out the window it is a handsome young squirrel, with bright eyes eating some of the vegetation. I walked out to the back Lucky’s eyes alight with excitement “Good Morning” Tossing away the long stem straw, The squirrel runs off.
Lucky surveys the peaceful scene before him. “Well, what can I tell you? Life in the world goes on like this every where much as it has in the past. Full of its own comings and goings majesty, scarcely even aware of the existence of Mankind ...for which I am very thankful....but if we don’t do something about global warming this will all change…..Human really are amazing creatures. They think they can learn all that there is to know about their ways in a one life time and yet, after hundreds of years, they can still learn nothing. You don’t need to be a scientist to observe the changes in nature. This beautiful morning scene normally has been a month earlier. Some people are so selfish they want the Earth’s resources now! Not considering the consequences. “Use it while you can attitude” I say enjoy it cuddle it and savor it while you can……. Again Lucky is being profound and philosophical. Not sure that Lucky has many if any short comings, he is a well rounded man. Lucky is always taking stock of his surroundings and never forgets from where he came or what he was left. The day was still beautiful. That’s all I could see, but I think that was Lucky’s point.
I just reached for another magazine, just then Lucky came out of the examination room. He had an indifferent smile on his face. It was a bewildering look I could tell something was up. The doctor said “See you in two weeks” we walked out to the truck…”Well what did the doctor say”. Lucky said “Nothing much I am fine”. Usually a Doctor doesn’t have you back in a short time. All Lucky really said about it was “We will have to wait to go back to the road until after next visit to see Doc”. We got back to the ranch where we went to the pool den and Lucky started to hit some balls. He showed me this shot where he jumped over a stack of balls and hit the rail and it bounced over another group of balls to pocket a ball in the side. He set it up almost identically again and made it. A shot I had not seen done deliberately but by accident. We started to make plans. He said that he wanted to go to the National BCAPL Tournament in May one of his favorite action spots these days. He also mentioned he wanted to go to an event in Asia. I was thinking wow getting out of the US to play pool. The trip is three fold he said. ?? I didn’t understand. He explained Play pool win money, See the sights and talk to small village “barefoot doctors” who know herbal medicine and have special remedies. The phone rang “Hello Askar, how you doing?” Askar wanted to know what happened that we were coming to Seattle area. Lucky explained that he had to take care of some business at home. The conversation went on a while…. Askar said he could get a game with Dan Louie and a few others who were around the area. He told Askar he knew Louie and they played a long time ago. They played when Louie was a young champion. Lucky told Askar he wasn’t able to come there and bust everyone for a while. That he had some other things he had to do, Askar said the money is good right now!! But we still couldn’t make it but looked forward to coming to Seattle soon. Lucky asked Askar to play like he didn’t know him if anyone asked…. Lucky got off the phone, it looks like we have a lot of plans and places to go. We talked about Europe and all the places in US like Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona and even more east coast stuff…I thought too many spots to go to but what a way to see the world, playing pool….

U.S. Open 9-Ball The U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships makes some great changes for 2012 and beyond Hello everyone, we hope all is well. We have some news for everyone along with some exciting changes that we have made. We regret to inform our past champions that they will no longer be receiving paid entry fees into the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships. We have deep admiration and respect for our champions and will continue to express our appreciation to them with our yearly traditions such as the parade of champions, which takes place every five years, as well as during additional traditions that we all enjoy. Only the defending champion will receive a paid entry fee each year, in addition to a free hotel room. We have made many wonderful changes for the 37th Annual U.S. Open and feel that this is a step in the right direction. With these changes, the total purse has been raised to $200,000.00 instead of $178,000.00. We will be adding $72,000.00 with a full field of 256 players, which we know will be full every year now since we have structured the prize fund breakdown extremely well, paying the champion $30,000.00 and now 65th-96th place receiving $1,000.00 each. Since we have discontinued the past champion entries, we have still included the $10,000-$12,000 additional to get to the 72,000 added. Unfortunately, there will also no longer be any discounts on entry fees this year since we are adding more. The entry fee will remain at $500.00 and will be collected by the BCA just like last year. You may begin sending in entry fees Tuesday, April 2nd, to The BCA. Details will be on our website, www.usopen9ballchampionships.com. We would like to thank Rob Johnson, President of the BCA. We are very happy to see the BCA become even more involved with American Professional Pool. In addition, we have decided to seed the top players from around the world and America. Clash of Champions Washington State 9 Ball Championships March 3-4th, The NWPA’s 1st tour stop of the 2012 season was hosted at The Golden Fleece in Kenmore, WA. The event was a qualifier for the US Open and with 34 entrants ended up being a $1000 added event. Players from BC, Alberta, Washington, Oregon, Texas, and Ohio came out to compete on some of the toughest equipment in the Northwest. The tournament was ran on 9 9 foot Diamonds, alternating break, race to 7 on the A side and 6 on the B. Several new players to the NWPA were warmly welcomed and included Michelle Prince from TX, Stephanie Goens from OH, Kris Robbins out of Springfield, OR, Joyce Robinson from Kennewick, WA and three ladies from the APA team Girls Misbehaving out of the Firehouse in Orting, WA: Lisa Petersen, Robin Smith, and Colleen Williams. Rail2Rail Productions provided a free live stream for the entire event. Play began at 10 am on Saturday morning and would continue until 3am, when the last match of the day was concluded. Only eight ladies returned on Sunday morning. Of those, 3 players already had earned their spots at the US Open, so one of the five remaining ladies would earn soon earn theirs. On the A side: Jana Montour played Shari Ross and Liz Cole played Cindy Sliva. Jana and Liz won their matches 7-1 and 7-3, respectively, and then faced each other for the hot seat, which Jana won by the score of 7-3. On the B side: Mary Hopkin played Suzanne Smith and Kim Jones played Deby Welfringer. Mary and Kim defeated their opponents 7-3 and 7-2 to advance. Mary then played Shari and Kim played Cindy. Both fresh off their first losses, Shari and Cindy rallied back and defeated Mary and Kim by the identical score off 7-5, to then square off against each other. Since Jana and Liz both had already earned their spots at the WPBA’s US Open, the battle for 3rd place would also include the qualifier spot. Both ladies played their hearts out and Shari ended up defeating Cindy 7-5 to advance. Congratulations Shari! Shari then played Liz; the winner would advance to the first NWPA final of 2012, where Jana was waiting… Liz defeated Shari 7-3 to force a rematch of the hot seat. The Final: Jana Montour 2010 NWPA Tour Champion vs. Liz Cole- 2008, 2009, & 2011 NWPA Tour Champion. Jana is the NWPA representative for the 2012 WPBA Classic Tour, while Liz Cole finished in the top 32 on the WPBA in 2011 to earn her exemption for the 2012 season. In the last two years these two ladies have won 11 out of 14 NWPA Tour Stops, and one of the two has been in the finals in 13 out of the last 14 events. Prior to 2012, they have only battled twice in the finals and are tied at one win each. NWPA finals are one race to 9, alternating break. Jana- Path to the Final: Stephanie G (3), Shelby L (5), Eve S (3), Kim J (5), Shari R (1), Liz C (3) Liz Cole- Path to the Final: Bye, Suwanna K (3), Talya M (5), Mary H (2), Cindy S (3), loss to Jana M (3), Shari R (3) Jana won the lag. Both players were shooting strong, but Jana jumped out to a 2-0
lead before Liz got on the board. At 2-1, Jana battled through each of the next racks, closing out each game to take a 4 game lead. Liz ran out the next two racks after a failed safety and a position error put Liz at the table with open runs to bring the score to 5-3. Jana and Liz exchanged the next two racks, and then Liz took advantage of Jana misses to take the next 3 racks and tie the match at 6-6. Not one to give up, Jana took her break and came back with a new resolve. Jana then ran a four and six ball out in racks 13 and 14 to reach the hill first. But Liz wasn’t through yet either, she had a five ball runout and then a 3-9 combo to tie up the match at hill-hill. Game 17- Jana broke and made the 3 ball, leaving an open shot on the 1. Jana pocketed the 1, but then scratched. With ball in hand, Liz ran the 2 and the 4, but while pocketing the 5 drew the cue ball straight into the 8 ball, hooking herself on the 6. With the bridge, Liz attempted a 2 rail kick, but miscued during her follow through. Her line was true, but unfortunately the cue ball had lost its momentum so she didn’t hit a rail after contacting the 6. With ball in hand, Jana ran out the 6, 7, 8, and 9 to win the first NWPA of 2012. Ladies that won included Elizabeth Jensen, Kit Dennis, Liz Cole, Michelle Prince, Eve Stockstill, Deby Welfringer, and Kimberly Kirk. We will also be providing $3/$1 scratch tickets for break and runs/9 ball breaks. Our next tour stop is April 28-29th at The Cue Ball in Salem, OR. Cascade Pool League Portland-based Cascade Pool League wrapped up its longest session of the year in February. The almost 20-week-long 8-ball session, held from early September through mid-February, included multidivisional team play and five interdivisional flighted playoff weeks. CPL’s popular 8-ball session pays every player back by points earned --1 for every ball dropped and 3 for the win. Handicapped Rounds Won earn top teams plaques, kudos, bragging rights, pats on the backs and a permanent spot in the CPL Historicals. CPL runs shorter, well-attended 9 and 10-ball sessions in spring and summer, but the Granddaddy has always been the 8-ball session, where this year several divisions battled it out for 15 weeks, then met other peer teams from around the league to face off in a heads up, no handicap, pay by rounds won 5-week Interdivisional Playoff. Though CPL offers both in-house and traveling sessions, the popular choice has long been in-house, so for most players, the Interdivisional Playoffs are the only time of the year where travel is necessary. It’s a great time to check out other locations, make new pool buddies, and gear up for the Western BCA 8-Ball Championships. CASCADE POOL LEAGUE 15TH ANNUAL AWARDS BASH CPL’s 15th Annual 8-Ball Awards Bash returned this year to the SE Portland area after many years in Oregon City. The day-long event was held for the first time at The Fortune Star on 159th and SE Division and it was a HUGE success. The Fortune Star features 6 well-maintained Diamond tables, great Asian food, several big-screen TV’s and lively karaoke. They were a fabulous host to the Bash and provided food and drink discounts all day long. Best guess estimate is that over 200 players came in and out throughout the day, participating in minitournaments, special pool events, and an evening scotch doubles tournament.
winner! At 3 pm, Kurt Hamm took off his Survivor hat and put on his Master of Ceremonies hat to host the Awards Ceremony. Kurt, with the help of David Haag, presented dozens of plaques, special recognitions, and feat awards to deserving players. Fanfare ensued, balloons bounced, flashbulbs popped, and more than a few players were probably blinded by the end of it, they received so many awards for outstanding performances. Payouts began shortly after 4 pm, with captains receiving team money and doling it out to eager players. (Early payouts had been offered to subs and any teams who were in attendance in entirety.)
The festivities started at 9 am with a breakfast and membership discounts, courtesy of CPL, for all the volunteers who helped set up, tear down and work during the bash. These invaluable CPL family members were Mike Norris, Steve Marker, Jason Latuala, Lisa Olson, Joyce Gumm, David Haag, Bob Heard, John Lewis, Ray Cunningham, Kurt Hamm, Cecil Pickett and Tommy Millhollin.
The Fortune Star accommodated CPL into the evening, so signups for a blind-draw scotch doubles resulted in 20 teams starting a double elimination, race-to-2 tournament around 5:30 pm. CPL added $100 to the pot, and the battle ended with Mike Carpenter and Smitty Smith on top of the heap with $140. Both played excellent pool throughout the event. TJ Weidmaier and Jerry Harding came in a respectable 2nd and $90 richer, followed by Steve Copher and Cherish Carpenter with $60 and in 4th, Morgan Houck and Gary Adam with $30. Not bad for a $5 entry per player event!
Doors officially opened at 11 am, but by then many players had already arrived and the seating for one hundred was filling fast. The bar opened at 1PM with eager players waiting at the door! By 2PM play got under way! It was a race to 2 8 Ball format using basic BCA rules. Each player paid $5 entry fee plus a $1 green fee. So with the bar adding $50 there was $150 to be won.
