Van Boening Claims Andy Mercer Memorial in Vegas Skip Maloney AzBilliards.com Staff Posting its results on-line, organizers of the 2014 Andy Mercer Memorial at Rum Runners in Las Vegas, opted for a bit of humor. The event's winner, Shane Van Boening, was declared to be its Supreme Champion, while runnerup Darren Appleton was Worthy Adversary. SemifinalistBernardo Chavez was granted the title of Maybe Next Time. While name recognition can be an unreliable way to predict tournament outcomes (as evidenced by Mercer over Duke in the on-going NCAA basketball tournament), Van Boening and Appleton seemed destined to meet in this $3,700-added (guaranteed) tournament that drew 64 entrants to Vegas on the weekend of March 21-23. While the field had its share of other 'names' like the Dominguez family (Ernesto and Oscar), Ozzy Reynolds and Jason Klatt, it was more clearly represented by Maybe Next Time; Bernardo Chavez hasn't (to our knowledge) ever finished higher than seventh since his name started to appear on payout lists, dating back to 2007. In this tournament, though, he challenged Appleton for the hot seat, and had the misfortune of facing Van Boening in the semifinals. Appleton's path to the event victory went through Joe Canella, Sal Butera, Jim Carmona, and Tres Kanebefore coming up against Jason Klatt in a winners' side semifinal. Klatt had just sent (in order) Ozzy Reynolds and Van Boening to the loss side. Chavez, in the meantime, had gotten by Roger Bordley, Ramin Bahktiari, Jimmy Moore and Fach Garcia and picked up Oscar Dominguez in the other winners' side semifinal. Appleton sent Klatt over, while Chavez was busy doing likewise to Dominguez. Appleton gained the hot seat over Chavez and sat in it, waiting on Van Boening. Van Boening opened his loss-side proceedings with a victory over Brian Parks, followed it by defeating Bordley and drew Dominguez (Oscar), as a result. Klatt came over to face Walter Glass, who'd eliminated Garcia and the other Dominguez (Ernesto). Klatt and Van Boening advanced to a quarterfinal re-match, won by Van Boening, who then ended Chavez' hopes for a re-match against Appleton. Chavez would go home with almost as much prize money for this one event than he's reported to have earned at the tables over the last four years. Destiny's hand played out and the two winners of the last four US Open 9-Ball Championships (Appleton in 2010 and 2011, Van Boening in 2012 and 2013) met in a true double elimination final. Van Boening took both sets to claim the event title.

This year’s event was extra special with 10 year old Sammy Paniccia (C-) participating. One match Sammy received a 5 game spot in a race to 8 from a seasoned champion Sacramento area player George Pagulayan (AA+). And, when it got to hill-hill, many were hoping Sammy would pull off the win – even George was showing compassion for little Sammy. Sammy lost, but played unbelievably well for a 10 year old.

Congratulations

Ernesto Reyes

JING LIU UNDEFEATED

KATHIE MACDONALD, FORD, JING LIU On March 22-23, 2014, the NWPA’s first tour stop of 2014 was hosted by Malarkey’s Pool & Brew in Tacoma, WA. The tournament was ran on 9 9-foot Gold Crowns with Rail2Rail Productions providing a free live stream all weekend. The NWPA tour standings and 2014 schedule are available at www.nwpatour.wordpress. com and is sanctioned by the WPBA. All skill levels are welcome to play and players can accrue points towards their semiprofessional status while gaining experience playing some of the top women players in the northwest. Twenty-eight ladies came out to compete Saturday morning. There were several new players to the tour including Kathie MacDonald (Victoria BC), Anna Busley (WA), Kristen Cambas (OR), and Lindsay Hays (WA). Ladies returning after a minimum of one year (or more) not playing on the tour included Western BCA Grandmasters Linda Carter, Carissa Biggs, and 2014 US Bar Table 10 Ball Champion Cindy Sliva. Liz Cole also returned for the inaugural event, climbing to 24th in the WPBA rankings after her performance at the WPBA Masters in Mt. Pleasant, MI Feb 6-9, 2014. The format was 9-ball, alternating break, race to 7on the A side and a race to 6 on the B side. There were several first round byes, but play sped right along, without any major upsets going through the early rounds. Sunday morning, only eight players remained. A side match ups included Kathie MacDonald vs. Jing Liu and Liz Cole vs. Cindy Sliva. Jing and Cindy both advanced through their morning matches, by the same score of 7-4. Jing and Cindy then squared off in the hot seat match. Jing advanced by the score 7-6 to earn her spot in the final. B side match ups included Carissa Biggs vs. Anna Busley and Natalie Seal vs. Suzanne Smith. Anna and Natalie advanced through their first round of play 6-3 and 6-2, only to come up short in their next rounds, Anna and Natalie both fell to their opponents Liz and Kathie by the same score, 6-2. Kathie then squared off against Liz. Kathie seemed to have the edge in their match and advanced by the score 6-4. Kathie then played Cindy and defeated her as well, 6-4. The final was one race to 9, alternating break. Throughout the entire final, Jing shot with confidence and precision, affording her opponent few and fewer opportunities

as the match proceeded. Jing maintained and expanded her lead steadily throughout the match, allowing her opponent only four racks of the 13 games played. Jing was the 2013 NWPA Rookie of the Year and demonstrated how hard work and perseverance in the off season can contribute to growth as a player. Congratulations to Jing for her win and to Kathie MacDonald for such a strong debut performance. Great tournament ladies! CHALK TALK Sponsored by: Master Chalk HAVE YOU EVER LOST BEFORE ?

BY: DON AKERLOW

THE SKY IS NO LIMIT

You can always walk away learning something from a loss and that doesn’t make you a loser. I was recently at a tournament, with a lot of good players. A friend of mine had commented that during one of his matches that he’d beat a well known national champion during this tournament and he had done it pretty handedly. He walked over to shake his hand and told him “good play”. The person didn’t respond, was kind of moody and arrogant about it, being down from his loss I’m sure. My friend is somewhat outspoken and he just proposed a question to him, “Have you ever lost before?” The gentleman looked at him a little befuddled and said, “Well, yes”. My friend’s comment was to the point, “Then act like it!”, which in my opinion speaks volumes. We all like to win and we all lose but you’ve got to realize also that you’re probably going to do more losing throughout a years time than winning. It’s like any other sport, the batting average of any major league player is good if it’s 33%. So you figure if you lose a lot there has to be something to be gained from that loss. You can approach it in several different ways. You can become moody, arrogant, don’t want to talk to anybody, kind of brood about it. That is not very productive. We all tend to go over any game or any match we have lost to figure out perhaps where the turn around was, what we did. What we missed and how we could have done anything different. I know I have many times. If you walk away from a match after a loss and you’ve learned something from that, perhaps what not to do next time, then you gain. If we walk away with an attitude and figure, “Well, I’m just not on today”, “I’m

SPOT

BAR & GRILL

I like to watch opponents. Not necessarily opponents of mine but other opponents that I’ll meet some other time, on the road or even a little bit later in the tournament. I find their weaknesses so I can capitalize on my strengths. There’s many avenues that you can take to improve your game. Practice is only one of them, but to know the weaknesses of your opponents is a very crucial one. You can also learn from the mental attitude of an opponent. How he or she reacts in certain situations. If you play a lot of safeties that you don’t need to. You’re not in stroke. You’re on your ‘B’ game - so play a ‘B’ game. You run a couple and you duck and hide. Just one example that can be used. I’ve won a lot of games and many matches using the philosophy “Play to the level that you’re playing today”. Don’t think about how great you were. Don’t think about how great you could be. Think about how you are playing today and adapt. That’s what it’s about, it’s adapting to conditions that you’re playing. We all get bad rolls. We all get unlucky, but we all get lucky as well. We all get good rolls. That’s not saying that they average out but utilize how you play at the time you’re playing. Just because you lost doesn’t make you a loser. There’s always another match and another day. Revenge is always one of the best reasons for winning.

12 page April 2014

Most of us have pretty good bridges for getting over a blocking ball – at least when the blocker is not too close to the cueball. But what about when we have to seriously elevate our stick because the balls are close together, and maybe we need some draw? Much, much tougher. Unless you’re really tall, extreme elevation is a challenge. We’ll illustrate two different ways to accomplish extreme elevation and still keep your stick under control: the Press Stroke and the Shoulder Stroke. And yes, it’s even possible to get good draw while frozen to the rail! Part of the difficulty with elevating is keeping your stroke arm in the vertical swing plane. Most players wing their forearm out sideways to get more elevation. But then they can’t really see down their stick, and their tip is moving side to side as they stroke. Problematic. The photos below show two surprising ways to elevate to an extreme, see down your stick, and stroke straight. The Press Stroke requires flexibility and strength. Here are the steps, but once you have it, you can get there in one smooth move: Photo 1: Choke way down on the cue. Stand close to the table, pressing the table with your thigh. Form a high open bridge on the rail. Using the webbing between the thumb and index finger of your grip hand, press the front of the stick down securely into your bridge. Maintain that downward pressure as you bend forward from the waist and raise the back of the stick to get into shooting position. Tuck your bridge elbow to your body as you bend. To raise the butt of the stick, lift the point of your elbow straight up (vertically, not tilted). Unfortunately, we’re not ready to hit yet. Notice how my stroke arm is already fully folded. I have nothing to stroke with. The solution appears in Photo 2. Photo 2: The final move is pretty weird, but it works. To get stroke room for your arm, glide your head down the stick line until your forearm is perpendicular to the stick when the tip is near the cueball. This puts your arm in the proper place to perform an accurate, athletic stroke. Of course, it will seem very strange to have your eyes overtop the cueball, and you will have had to aim well prior to the head move. Don’t try to hold this position for long. You’re using lots of muscle. Finally, stroke and hit

www.TheBreakMagazine.com

while holding the stick against your chest for greater stability. The Shoulder Stroke is remarkably easy for most players. They’ve just never seen it. Even players with physical limitations like neck pain, stiffness, and lack of flexibility can usually do well with this technique: Photo 3: The beauty of the Shoulder Stroke is that you can stand up straight and comfortably see down most of the length of the stick. The actual stroke is different from the standard, but so is this technique. So what if the method is unconventional? It works, and it’s legal. Stand facing fairly square to the shot. Find a place on your shoulder where the stick can ride pretty smoothly and you can see down it. Make a high bridge. Here’s the key – grip the shaft about halfway between the joint and tip. Hold the stick gently against your shoulder and your bridge by pulling your elbow straight back along the line of your forearm. Find the angle and pulling pressure that allows the stick to stroke smoothly and straight, without slipping around on your shoulder or being loose in your bridge. Stroke with your forearm, right through the cueball like you’re trying to hit the table. On elevated shots like this, most players prefer looking at the cueball during the hit stroke. Notice in Photo 3, I’m taking a half tip of cushion. It’s rubber, after all. I’m going through like it’s not there. Draw off the cushion? Yep, it’s beautiful and it’s easier than you’d think, but it could cost you some “customers.”

The A2B Drill

Bob Jewett

Bob Jewett

14 page April 2014

After a certain point in your development as a pool player, improving your position skills will yield the fastest improvement in your game. Without the ability to move the cue ball to a reasonable angle for the next shot, your runs will end quickly. The basic skills of speed control and changing the cue ball’s deflection off the object ball with draw and follow are easy to understand and very basic drills like the progressive practice drills I’ve mentioned before will let you develop your technique with simple set positions. Add to that a little feel for how to use side spin on the cushions and a feel for how to adjust your aim for such shots, and you are ready for some more realistic position problems. I think the drill shown here is the best way to learn and extend cue ball control for intermediate players. I call it the “A2B Drill” since the point is to get from A to B. It is a lot like a practice tool called “Target Pool” which was great for training but is no longer made. (A demonstration of the A2B drill is available in the DVD series “Video Encyclopedia of Pool Practice” that I developed with Dr. Dave Alciatore.) The first part of the drill is to choose two points, A and B. You can do this in lots of ways including breaking nine ball and taking two ball positions as A and B or by drawing cards from a deck after assigning locations to each card. Shown in the diagram is one of many possible choices. Mark the points with chalk or stick-on donuts. The B target could be a cut-out circle the size of a ball or a larger bull’s-eye target as is used in Target Pool. For each shot, place the object ball at A and take cue ball in hand. You also need to pick a pocket for the shot, one of which is demonstrated in the diagram. The goal is to pocket the ball and leave the cue ball “pretty close” to B. The margin of error you give yourself is up to you, but always try to leave the cue ball exactly on B. Within three to five shots you should be able get a good if not perfect result. If a shot has you stumped, move on and come back to it later. In the diagram, the cue ball is about at the limit for playing a soft draw shot from A to B. Any thinner and either you won’t be able to get enough draw to curve the path of the cue ball back to B or the cue ball will go to far if you shoot hard enough to get the object ball to the pocket. The cue ball shown at X is at the other extreme with a nearly straight shot. You will need a lot of power and not much draw to move the cue ball to B from that position. Somewhere between those two positions

www.TheBreakMagazine.com

will be a position for the cue ball that will be most comfortable. If you had ball in hand during a game, that would be where you should place the cue for the shot but it’s important to know how to play the cue ball from the two extremes. To continue the drill, try each of the other pockets in turn, always placing the object ball at A and trying to get to B without the cue ball contacting a cushion. Find each “easiest” position and stroke and then see how much you can vary from that and still get position. For example, when playing to pocket G straight draw is the only solution but you can vary your speed and amount of draw. Next time we’ll look at using cushions with this same drill.

TABLE TALK

PLAYING THE GHOST

Sometimes, your best opponent is yourself

Michael K Glass

Michael Glass has been teaching pool for close to 10 years. He is a Recognized PBIA Billiards Instructor, taught by none other than Bob Jewett of the San Francisco Billiard Academy. Michael has been playing pool almost all of his life (except when he was in the Navy — it’s hard to install a pool table on a rocking ship!). He managed to stay away from the hustler life; he doesn’t believe in being dishonest in order to win money. He will, however, occasionally play for a beer or two at the local watering hole. Michael teaches all levels of pool players, from beginner to pro, and works on all aspects of the game, from fundamentals, to pattern play, to trick shots. He can be found playing in his home town of San Ramon, CA at Crown Billiards. Visit his website at mikekglass.com for pool tips or to schedule a lesson!

I have been asked many times “what is the best practice routine?” The honest answer to that is “that depends.” And, of course, it’s the truth. Practice and drills are meant to help you hone and refine your problem areas, and make you a better player. Every player has different things to work on, so every player should have their own customized practice routines. But man, can it be boring! Sometimes, just playing a game against other people is what you want to do. The best choice is someone who has the same skill set as you, to give you a good challenge without making you sit in your chair all night. And you want someone who will play whatever game you want to play, right? Sometimes, your best opponent is yourself. That’s why I often recommend people play the Ghost. Playing the Ghost is a good tool to add to your practice routines. Practice can be quite boring sometimes, and tedious. While I am a strong proponent of working on your fundamentals, identifying problem areas, and working them out, I also believe that pool is supposed to be fun. So, it’s good to mix up your practice routines, and this is an excellent way to challenge yourself. If you are an intermediate or advanced player, then you probably already know how to play the ghost. You may skip to the optional variations outlined further down. So, what is the Ghost? The Ghost is an imaginary player. You are going to pit yourself against this player, and attempt to beat him. If you can do this, you will be able to beat almost anyone you play! So how does the Ghost play? Perfectly. Yes, that’s right. The Ghost never misses. If you

miss a shot during your turn, you assume the Ghost will run the table and beat you. Therefore, if you miss, you lose! Sounds terrible, doesn’t it? It’s not so bad. There are “conditions.” Here’s how to play against the Ghost: Set up your game of choice. Playing the Ghost works for almost any game. Break the balls the best you can. Do not worry if any balls go in or not, or even if you scratch. From this point, you have ball-in-hand. Put the cue ball anywhere you like, and try to run the table. If you run out, you win. If you don’t, the Ghost wins. Score accordingly, and re-rack. Play to a predetermined number of wins (I usually do a race to 5). When either you or the Ghost wins the match, start over at 0-0. That’s it! The wonderful thing about playing the Ghost is that it puts tournament-level pressure on you, helping you to learn to focus on your shots. And you get to do this while playing a real game, instead of just setting up practice drills. Good Luck! “Wait! Michael! I can’t beat the Ghost! I can’t run out a rack of (9-ball/8-ball/Straight pool). How do I play the Ghost if he always beats me?” Ah. Good point. That brings us to: Variations If you like, there are ways to vary the rules a bit. Here are a few suggestions, but the list is by no means exhaustive. If you have suggestions, please feel free to share them with me at pool@mikekglass.com! After the break, you may pick up a certain number of balls and immediately pocket them (thereby making your run-out a little easier). Be careful not to make it too easy, (continued on page 38)

During the early 1990’s I spent a lot of time at JR’s Pool Room in Lancaster, Kentucky. I guess you could say I got a pool hall degree (PhD) there. I learned offensive play, but also a lot of defensive 8-ball strategy. In fact, I can recall when Florida native David Favor visited our billiard room. Favor was strong road player that displayed powerful offensive skills. One Friday night he entered our weekly 8-ball tournament. The fields were always tough but Favor added

remember him running down to his final 3 solids then missing. It was really quite a shock. Jack was left with the layout below. I can remember watching the wheels turn on Jack as he approached the table to return the shot. “Um hmm,” Jack said as he got down to shoot. Jack shot the cue ball slightly below center with a medium speed and played a combination on David’s six-ball, pocketing it, while hooking Favor from hitting his two remaining balls (leaving the cue ball

significant weight to the already formidable field. On a normal Friday night we usually had over 50 players. However, Favor was such a strong offensive threat I wondered how anyone could beat him. As the tournament progressed, Favor ran rack after rack. The competition seemed to be no match for him, but it wasn’t long until he ran into local hero Jack Howe. At that time, Jack was in his mid 60’s, a shorter southern gentleman, balding with dark gray hair. He was very offensive minded but was also a sharp cookie when it came to defensive play. I knew if anyone could beat Favor it had to be Jack. He had won more big 8-ball tournaments than anyone I knew. To most people Jack looked very unintimidating. However, I knew he had the heart of a lion, and it definitely was going to take someone ferocious to take Favor down. Favor broke the balls in the final game of the tournament. I can

at position “A”). “That should do the trick!” he said in a deep southern drawl. I remember wondering why Jack wanted to pocket his opponent’s ball. Wasn’t that helping David Favor? Several questions came to mind as I pondered the situation. However, after carefully scrutinizing the result, I realized that Jack had completely eliminated any opportunity for David to pocket the six-ball or use it to breakout the troublesome cluster located near the end rail. It really was a brilliant move. David had no choice but to kick at his two remaining balls and pray for luck. However, this wasn’t the case. David missed the kick shot and Jack quietly pocketed his remaining balls to win the championship. After the tournament was over Jack went to the tournament director Wanda Renner, to collect his tournament winnings. If I recall, Jack won around $450.00 for 1st place. However, Jack didn’t take half of his self in the Calcutta. A man that was around 40 years old bought Jack and won nearly $800.00 from the auction. The man tipped Jack $100.00 for winning the tournament. I will never forget what Jack told me after being tipped. He said, “It sure was nice of that old man to give me a $100.00 tip!” It was obvious that Jack was 20 years older than the guy that bought him and I was shocked by the comment. I remember telling Jack “You think he is an old man?” He said, “Yes, I may be over 60 but I think like a 30 year old!” Always remember to look for ways to eliminate your opponent’s options. Sometimes pocketing your opponent’s ball may be the best solution. Jack was a master of defensive strategy and over several year’s I learned from watching the best. To this day, I owe a great deal of my 8-ball knowledge to Jack Howe, a true southern gentleman.

19th Western BCA 8-Ball Championships

By Robbin Iredale, with a little help from Darcy Williams

Lincoln City, Oregon and Chinook Winds Casino Resort® welcomed 1,422 players (an increase of 4%) to the 19th Annual Western BCA Regional 8-Ball Championships, held March 9-16, 2014. The weather outside fluctuated between sunny and nice (a little) or gray, wet and windy (most of the time). The weather inside was all a pool player could ask for. BadBoys Billiard Productions®, Jeramy Daniels (WBCA Tournament Stager), and the Chinook Winds staff joined to put together the tournament rooms and, when it was time to open the doors at 3pm on Saturday, all was in place for a week of competition, rivalry and new champions. This event was live streamed by Lenny Marshall, OnTheRailTV®, who streamed all day every day, including as many of the finals that could be scheduled on the “TV” tables. There were a couple of firsts this time. The 1st Annual Chinook Winds Open 8-Ball Championships were held Monday and Tuesday, with 48 in the Men’s division and 13 in the Women’s and, for the first time ever, two Open Women’s divisions, A and B debuted. There was one repeat Singles Champion, but all the others were first timers. Once again, we were fortunate to have a very special cue donated to Western BCA to be raffled. This time it was a beautiful Roger Pettit cue donated by Ernie Omori (EYO Cues®). Sales were brisk and, when all the tickets were totaled, $1,675 was raised to help fund future WBCA events. NPL’s Clara Silvas was the happy winner and we wish her many years of good shooting with this wonderful cue. Many thanks to all the players who purchased tickets and to Shari Ross, Ernie and the Podium staff who sold tickets. Good Job everyone. Fun Night was Saturday, another first. Sign-ups for the Handicapped 10-Ball Singles were brisk and the 48 Bracket was full by start time. After the first 3 rounds there were 8 left. Finishing 5th-8th ($60): Daniel Sardoncillo (NPL), Linn Petty (EV), Carlos Cadena (CC) and Nick Kruger (WWA/LTD). 3rd/4th: Kenny Dodd (NPL) and Eddie Mataya (NPL). Finalists Stan Tourangeau (LTD) and Mike Stevens (NPL) chose to split the combined 1st and 2nd place money and each took home $260. While the 10-Ball was going on, Ed Slade and his crew got the Mini-Tournaments going. There were 23 in all (7 MA’s,14 MB’s, 1 MM and 1 WO). Needless to say, there were no empty tables as everyone took advantage of the opportunity to get some practice in prior to the start of Scotch Doubles the following day. All in all, fun seemed to be had by all.

Andrea Saenz-Maes Mixed Scotch Doubles kicked the Championships off at 10am Sunday morning. Master Mixed Scotch Doubles began with 46 pairs, all with their eyes on the 1st place prize of $1800. Clayton Foran and Jessica Orth (CWY) worked their way to the hot seat after getting by a couple of very tough opponents in Eddie Mataya & Deby Welfringer (NPL) and Paul Marquez (NPL/CPL) & Andrea Saenz-Maes (LTD). Former Champs Steve Lingelbach & Carissa Biggs (NPL) played 10 matches and were hoping for a spot in the finals but their run ended with them in 3rd Place ($860) after coming up short against Paul/Andrea, who went on to the finals. The two pairs traded games until they were hill/hill. The deciding game started

with Clayton breaking dry. It looked all but over as Paul/Andrea ran down to the 8-Ball. Andrea was left with a tough carom on the 8-Ball that didn’t go in. Jessica made the 5-Ball but Clayton, left with no shot, tried to block the 8-ball but failed, leaving Paul with an easy 8 in the corner and a possible double dip was on. Paul/Andrea started out the deciding match (this time a race to 4) with a couple of wins before stalling in game 3 and letting Clayton/Jessica back in the match (2-1). They traded the next two games (3-2) before Paul/Andrea closed the door, taking the final game, the match, the title and the $1800 check. Clayton/Jessica had a great event and finished in 2nd Place ($1240).

Open Mixed Scotch Doubles, also started Sunday morning and featured 135 couples on a 2 day quest for the title and $1600. Mike Norris & Linda (Smitty) Smith (CPL) made it to the finals undefeated, sending Steve Tamura & Cassie Francois (LTD) to the back side in the point match with revenge on their minds. Only Scott Walton & Fran Johnson (LTD) stood in their way. Steve/Cassie proved to be too strong and Scott/Fran left in 3rd place ($910). After the first 4 games of the final, the score was 2-2. Then Steve/Cassie took control and closed out the match. Another possible double dip. Mike/Smitty just couldn’t get anything going in the final final and Steve/ Cassie were playing well. In three games it was over. Mike/Smitty got $1200 for their 2nd place showing and Steve/Cassie left with the title and the $1600 1st place check.

Monday evening at 6p with 290 entries and would end on Thursday evening with 2 left standing and the 1st place prize of $1100 on the line. Ramon Farias (TC) worked hard and got to the finals undefeated. Ramon took on Alex Blair (NPL) in the point match and sent him to the back side where he was denied a trip to the final and ended his journey in 3rd place ($615). Ramon first met Andy Dalbey (CPL) on the winner’s side and sent him down to try for another shot at him in the final. After Andy dispatched Alex, a seat in the final was his. After 6 games they were even. The hill game went to Andy who was looking for the double dip. The second time around was a repeat of the first, hill/hill. In the match game, Andy got off to a good start by running 6 balls before missing the 3-Ball. Ramon patiently worked through his balls as Andy just couldn’t get the 3-Ball off the table. Ramon finally pocketed the 8-Ball and claimed the title and $1100. Andy left with 2nd Place ($800). 9th-12th $200 13th-16th $155

Carlos Cadena

The Men’sA Singles got underway on Tuesday morning. 193 started play, eager and hopeful. Carlos Cadena (CC) was a man on a mission, losing only 9 games in six matches on his way to the final. Rod Bair (CC) had the same idea but by the time he got to Carlos, in the point match, Carlos was more than ready for him and sent him to the back side. Rod had a tough opponent in Sonny Redthunder (INL) but he really wanted another go at his league-mate so Sonny’s quest for a spot in the final ended and he went home in 3rd place ($740). Rod took the first game of the final. Carlos, mission in mind, answered by taking the next 4 games, and he was on the hill. Rod rallied and took the next game but that was as far as he would go. Rod happily accepted the 2nd place check for $1000. Carlos, mission accomplished, collected the $1375 1st place check and the title. The 1st Annual Chinook Winds Open 8-Ball Championships were born after much discussion and experimentation as to how to best showcase our premier players, Mary Coffman the GrandMasters. What began as the GrandMaster Challenges and evolved into a GrandMaster Singles Division has now, with support from Chinook Winds, become an event open to not only our own GrandMasters but to any players from anywhere with the hope that it would eventually attract professional pool players. Was this a good first step for this format? If the number of spectators enjoying these matches were any indication, we are hopeful. Only time will tell. The Men’s CWO Open kicked off with 48 men (7 GrandMasters, 41 Masters or below), many familiar faces, many not. After two days of ferocious play, Stan Tourangeau (LTD) went unbeaten to Stan Tourangeau the final. After losing his second match, Mike Stevens (NPL) worked his way all the way through the back side, one match away from the final. Tommy Rossi (CC) had other plans. He played Stan in the point match, lost that one and wanted a rematch with Stan. Mike’s CWO ended with a 3rd place finish and $1000. The first six games of the final went Tommy, Stan (Break/Run), Tommy, Stan, Tommy (Break/Run) and Stan (Break/Run with a jump to pocket the 8-Ball) and the score was 3-3. Game 7 started out with Tommy breaking, running 5 balls and fouling on the 9-Ball. Stan took over and ran out. (4-3) Stan broke in game 8, making 4 balls and, in spite of some problems along the way, completed the run out and was on the hill. (5-3) In game 9, Tommy broke, making a ball and ran off 4 balls before fouling on the 4-Ball when he went for a break out. Stan wasted no time completing his run and the match was over. Tommy fought the good fight and left in 2nd place ($1700). Stan, Men’s CWO Champion, pocketed $3000. The Women’s CWO had 13 entries, 7 GrandMasters and 6 Masters or below. Two GrandMasters met in the final. Mary Coffman (NPL) got there first. Former 2011 GrandMaster Challenge Champ, Linda Carter (PCGP) lost her first match and came all the way through the back side, hoping for another final and another title. Another former Champion, Cindy Sliva (NPL), fresh off a great showing at the Reno Bar Box the previous week, had the same plan and ended Linda’s quest in 3rd Place ($350). There would be a new Champion, however, as Mary refused to let Cindy get going and took the final by a score of 5-2 and collected the 1st place prize of $875.

The Women’s Senior Singles, with a bracket of only 8, may have lacked in numbers but not the desire to win. Sandra Frazier (LTD) and Aileen Bristow (NPL) played to the point match. Sandra won and waited to see if Aileen would come to the final from the back side for a rematch. Only Patty Hayes (CWY) stood in her way but Patty couldn’t stop Aileen. Patty finished in 3rd place ($50). The final was a hard fought, hill/hill match. Sandra came out the winner and collected $200 for her efforts. Aileen, in 2nd place, took home $100.

Sandra Frazier

The new Women’sA and Women’sB divisions were created so the Open Women could be grouped with and compete against women of similar skill level and so all would have a chance to do well and get in the money. The first Women’sA Singles drew 78 women vying for the title and $750. Rebecca Slyter (CPL) and Lisa St. Claire (NPL) played to the point match with Rebecca going on to the final undefeated as Lisa went to the back side. Julie Stallings (EV) played to the final bracket before her first loss. She played four matches on the back side before coming up against Lisa for a possible trip to the final. Lisa, however, was determined to get her rematch with Rebecca and Julie finished in 3rd place ($375). Lisa and Rebecca both brought their A-games to the final, splitting the first two games (1-1). Lisa won the next two games, one with a table run (3-1) before Rebecca answered back with a table run of her own. (3-2) Lisa shut the door on the match with a win (4-2) and forced a deciding match. Rebecca got off to a good start, taking the first two games before Lisa dropped the hammer on her and won the next four games and the match. Rebecca, in 2nd place, earned $525 and Lisa, the first ever Women’sA Champion, left with $750.

Jessica Aarhaus

Miguel Morfin

The Women’sB Singles division was slightly larger than the A, with 84 entering. Newcomer Jessica Aarhaus (LTD) and long time player Windy Manuelito (COB) were undefeated until they met in the point match. Jessica won and was the first to get a spot in the final. Windy played Lisa Olson (CPL) to see who would represent the back side in the final. Lisa earned the spot and Windy settled for 3rd place ($275). Jessica was just too much for Lisa (2nd Place/$385) in the final, winning the match by a score of 4-1 and became the first Women’sB Champ and happily accepted the $550 first place check.

The 67 entrants in the Men’s Master Singles division all came to play. No one more so than the 2013 9-Ball Men’s Master Singles Champion, Miguel Morfin (LTD). Winning his first six matches, Miguel wasted no time getting to the final. Mike Stevens (NPL) and Adam Stromberg (LTD), played for the opportunity to get into the final with Miguel. Adam ended up in 3rd place ($625) and Mike had a chance to redeem himself after losing the point match to Miguel earlier. Miguel won the lag which would turn out to be crucial. Tricia went to the back side and took on 1st time master INL’s Sheila Clark and held on for a rematch in the final. Sheila played well and proved she is a true master by taking 3rd place ($410). The final was almost a replay of the point match as Natalie beat Tricia (2nd place/$625) by a score of 5-2 and became the Women’s Master Champion ($950).

Mike won the next two games to even the match at 4-4 before the two split games 9 and 10 to get the match to hill/hill. Remember the lag? Miguel had the break in game 11 and he took full advantage of it by breaking and running out to win the match and collect his second title and the winner’s check for $1475. Mike could only watch. By Wednesday, all the remaining divisions were on the tables. Men’s Senior Singles fielded 59 wily veterans, all no strangers to competition and all looking forward to the challenge. Ray Galli (CPL) showed his stuff by getting to the final undefeated. Ernie Omori, who played Ray for the point, could not get past two time runner up, Sonny Boggs (PCGP) and finished in 3rd place ($305). Sonny was in the final for the third straight time but hoping for a different result this time. The final started out with the men trading the first 4 games (2-2). Ray controlled the match from that point on, taking the next 3 games, the crown and the 1st place check for $600. Sonny, a bridesmaid once again, collected $425 and will no doubt spend the next few months wondering just what he has to do to get over that final hurdle.

The Regulators NPL had to play NPL’s Crazy 8’s (Manuel Arceo, Isaac Dally, Jesse Garner, Steve Sandberg, Jim Savidge) and win to get their rematch. There were 15 Women’s Master Teams seeking the title and the $2000 1st place check. Pool Tourettes (Kim Jones, Jocelyn Liu, Susan Preston, Shari Ross) and Despicable Us (Carissa Biggs, Shirley Morgan, Barb Thompson, Ann Zack) played for the point, with Pool Tourettes winning that match by a score of 13-7. Despicable Us went to the back side for one match against Gate Keepers (Karla Bagley-Tias, Josie Balius, Natasha Hook, Andrea Saenz-Maes), winning by a score of 13-9, sending the Gate Keepers home in 3rd place/$620 as they went on to the final and a rematch with Pool Tourettes. Malarkeys 2 (Bobby Campbell, Eddie Mataya, Miguel Morfin, Junior Sardoncillo, JohnTe) and Good Shot Dummies (Mike Deitchman, Rich Geiler, Paul Marquez, Bob Olson, Cedric Sloan) played for the point, with Malarkeys 2 going on to the final. Fabulous 5 (Chad Bisconer, Nick Kruger, Tim Lezard, Terry McDonnell, Stan Tourangeau) gave it their all but came up a little short and had to settle for 3rd place and $1200. Good Shot Dummies held off Malarkeys 2 13-5 and looked good for the double dip and almost got there. However, Malarkeys 2 begged to differ, taking the hard fought final match of the Championships by a score of 13-10 and were the last Champions crowned ($2800).

With 44 teams, the Women’s Open Team division, got underway Saturday morning. LTD’s Sea Gals (Jessica Aarhaus, Rimma Gounares, Stacy Moore-Moses, Le Ann Russell) were undefeated and waited for an opponent in the final. NPL’s NPL Gals (Robin Adams, Dara Koch, Jordan Oakes, Brandy Phillips) took on CPL’s No Balls All Game (Kim Allen, Kirsten Fery, Linda Smith, Jennifer Windell) but lost 3-9 and finished in 3rd place ($880). No Balls All Game would have another crack at the Sea Gals (having lost to them in the point match). The tournament is held yearly in memory of Gordon Boyd, the previous owner of the Shot Glass. He loved and played the game of pool every chance he got and usually had his pool cue with him wherever he went. Every morning he would have players at the tables playing pool, laughing and joking amongst themselves and just enjoying each others company. Many pool tournaments were held at the Shot Glass while under his ownership. He also participated in the league games. We thought the tournaments would be a fitting tribute to his memory and it has been very well received by the players who participate.

Jim Pierce of Pocatello, ID brought his lathe and examples of his custom made pool cues. He makes awesome pool cues and they were indeed very beautiful. He

2014 PartyPoker Mosconi Cup

Wilson names USA Squad by: Luke Riches FOLLOWING ON from his appointment in January, 2014 USA PartyPoker Mosconi Cup captain MARK WILSON today names his squad of eight players who will be tasked with winning pool’s most prestigious team trophy for the first time since 2009. Wilson has opted for a blend of experience and youth and his eight-man squad will be reduced down to the five who will travel to Blackpool, England at the end of November to contest the 21st annual Mosconi Cup. Head of the pack and named as one of his two vice-captains is SHANE VAN BOENING, who will be making his eighth appearance in the event. The 30 year-old South Dakota native said, "I have been looking forward to another chance to win in the biggest setting. Winning is what I am focused on every day, and I want this one more than ever.” Wilson added, “Any reasonable person who was building a new team would look to have Shane to build around given his professionalism and success. Even more importantly, his character and principles are just the thing for new players to emulate. He sets a great example, and I expect to rely on him for leadership this year. Looking to make his second appearance in the Mosconi Cup after being a member of the team that successfully retained the trophy in 2006 is ‘Mr 400’ JOHN SCHMIDT. The 40 year old, now residing in

California, is the oldest member of the squad and is thrilled at the prospect, "Being chosen for this Team USA and the chance to play for a Mosconi Cup is the most humbling experience and the biggest honor of my life." Looking to make his eighth appearance is Prince of Pool, COREY DEUEL, who is hoping to add to his three Mosconi Cup wins. "The last time that I played was the last time that the US won and I have some new ideas to offer for preparation of this year's team - concepts that I will share with every team member. The Blackpool venue is so inspiring that I can hardly wait for December." The fourth member of the squad is 30 year-old BRANDON SHUFF who received a Mosconi Cup baptism of fire at the York Hall on his only previous appearance in 2012. "This guy has a ton of heart along with a great work ethic, and will be primed for a great year,” said Wilson. “He puts himself out there by playing many events throughout the US and I am pleased to have him on the team." The first of the potential debutants is the highly-rated JUSTIN HALL, the 26 year-old from Palm Harbor, Florida. A proven champion at both banks and onepocket, Hall is determined to take his chance, “I always wanted to make the Mosconi Cup team, and now that the opportunity is here, I will further intensify my training. I love being under pressure

to perform and am looking forward to both the challenge to make the final five, and the opportunity to win on the biggest stage." Another Mosconi Cup veteran hoping to return to the fray is California’s OSCAR DOMINGUEZ, who was part of 2009’s winning team on his only other appearance. "The pinnacle of my career was the 2009 Mosconi Cup victory; it was quite an amazing experience and I am very grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the team in 2014,” said Dominguez. The second rookie in the squad is 26 yearold JUSTIN BERGMAN who hails from Fairview Heights in Illinois. Justin has many regional victories and one major tournament win in the One Pocket division at the Southern Classic in 2012. Bergman added, "I have only dreamed of ever making Team USA and going to the Mosconi Cup. I have been very dedicated the last couple of years and feel that I am improving and getting results. This is the next step." The final piece in the Team USA jigsaw puzzle is Connecticut-based rookie JEREMY SOSSEI. One of the strongest players in the northeast, he has many regional tournament victories, and strong showings against some of the best players in the world. The 34 year-old said, "Getting the call to possibly represent the USA in the Mosconi Cup has been a dream come true. I'm ecstatic! I've been working hard on my game the last couple of years and I believe I'm ready. With team work we can get the Cup back." As well as Shane Van Boening, Mark Wilson has named DON WARDELL MD as his second ViceCaptain. The 60 year-old is a practicing physician with a passion for billiards. Wardell has a strong interest in billiards history, sports medicine, training techniques, and biomechanics. He will be assisting Mark Wilson throughout the preparation over the coming months as well as in Blackpool when the event gets underway.

Saratoga, WyomingRodney Morris recently posted on his Facebook to his fans that he is going to show the world he is still a force to be reckoned with. And he has. The 7th Annual Andy Cloth Wyoming Open consists of 3 Pro Events as well as 3 Divisions for amateurs. Morris has already won 2 of the 3 tournaments including a whitewashing of USA’s #1 Shane Van Boening. The 3 day Rocky Mountain pool extravaganza is taking place now and is widely considered to be the most anticipated tournament that players in this part of America looks forward to each year. Event promoter E.J. Glode manages to bring players of all levels nationwide to Saratoga, including some of the biggest names in the sport. The event is co-promoted by Dragon Promotions and is renowned to be the biggest pool event in the state drawing over 150 players. From beginner, intermediate, expert and pro/open level tournaments will all be available. The event is sponsored by widely popular Andy Cloth, Pechauer Cues, and Master Chalk. Local partners include Duke’s Bar & Grill, the Hotel Wolf & Restaurant, and the Riviera Lodge with all events coordinated by Shively Hardware. In the 10-Ball Masters, Morris took down Charlie Williams 6-4 in the opening match, and then defeated his next three opponents including Spain’s Marc Vidal. It now came down to the reigning US Open 10-Ball Champion vs the reigning US Open 9-Ball Champion. Facing Van Boening who earlier eliminated Mexico’s new champion Ruben Bautista, Morris was just too hot to handle as he blanked Shane 6-0 for the title. In the game of Saratoga which combines 8-Ball and 9-Ball together, Morris went undefeated until he ran into Ruben Bautista who defeated him. Deuel was taking to the new game well as he defeated Charlie Williams and eventually Van Boening in the hot seat. Morris cameback with a vengeance on the one loss side and avenged himself against Bautista, defeated Van Boening again, and then edged Deuel in the finals 9-7 to win the second event in a row. Today will be the final day and it comes down to the 8-Ball Division of the Andy Cloth Wyoming Open. Can Morris win all 3 events? We will soon see!

“WIN JIM’S MONEY”

SALEM, OR March 22, 2014 Great Tournament this month at The Cue Ball. DC Craig was hot throughout and played Resse Alvaran for the hot seat. DC defeated Resse 4 to 1. Resse then played Josh Wayne who had come up the hard way through the loser’s bracket. Josh was smokin’ hot and dispatched Resse in 5 racks for the right to meet DC in the final. Josh continued his torrid play and won the 1st match to force the final. Josh Wayne was not to be denied for his

efforts on a long day and took the final 5 games to 2 to claim the $240 1st place prize. DC took home 2nd and $140. Resse settled for 3rd and an $ 80.00 prize. A total of 38 players (down from a tournament high of 54 players last month) participated. Our next Tournament promises a quick turnaround as we had to reschedule from April 19 to April 5. Our tournaments are limited to players from the Willamette Valley and cost just $10, green fee’s included. Jom adds a minimum of $ 200 to the prize fund.

CAN ANYONE PLAY IN THE BCAPL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS?

Recently, CSI has received a repeat question – can anyone play in the BCA Pool League (BCAPL) National Championships? The answer is a definite YES! There is a general misconception that a person must be in a BCAPL league in order to compete in the National Championships. This is false. Anyone can purchase a “Player Membership” for just $25 and be eligible to compete in various singles and doubles events depending on their BCAPL ranking.

NEW OPEN EVENTS ADDED

In an effort to provide more opportunities for all players CSI has added a new event, the 10-Ball Challenge, to the BCAPL National Championships schedule! By adding this event, there are now three back-to-back events that are open to everyone! Each of these are played on 7-foot tables. 9-Ball Challenge: July 16-17, double elimination, race to 7, $135 entry 10-Ball Challenge: July 18-19, double elimination, race to 7, $135 entry Grandmaster 8-Ball: July 20-22, double elimination, race to 9, $235 entry

Justin Collett joins CSI CSI is proud to announce that Justin Collett, an original founder of The Action Report (TAR), is now the new CSI Media Manager. In his new role, Collett’s responsibilities will include CSI live streaming, recorded content management, print ad development, website graphics, YouTube channel management, Facebook pages management, and much more. Over the last seven years as the face of TAR, Collett has been the industry leader in live streaming of billiards events and has built an impeccable reputation of customer service and quality. In that time, TAR produced 39 challenge matches featuring many of the best players on the planet with unique formats and stunning quality. With this move, CSI can now consolidate many previously outsourced activities and better control its product. Additionally, Collett brings a wealth of industry knowledge and relationships that will allow CSI to strengthen its position. Please join us in welcoming Justin Collett to the CSI team!

As an added incentive for players to make the trip and compete in all three of these events, we have also added an option called the “Triple Play.” By registering for the Triple Play, you are automatically registered for all three events at a $55 discount! Note: if you are not a BCAPL league member, no problem! Simply purchase a “Player Membership” for just $25 and be eligible to compete in these and other singles and doubles events. Sign-up before June 3, 2014 to avoid any late fees.

(continued from page 13)

Viper: How do you prepare for events? Joey: I love to run to clear my head and practice constantly. Also competing with my best friend Chip Compton helps a lot. Viper: What was the best advice you were ever given? Joey: You have to be got in order to get. Viper: What is one thing that you enjoy most while playing pool? Joey: Definitely winning, but I love the intensity of a close match. Viper: If you could say one thing to a young up-coming player what would it be?

Table Talk

(continued from page 15) however. This is supposed to be a challenge. Break fewer balls. Instead of a full 8-ball rack, rack a 9-ball version of the game (4 solids, 4 stripes, 8-ball). Instead of a 9-ball rack, rack 7 balls (standard 7-ball rack). After each shot, allow yourself to move the cue ball one hand-span in any direction. If that is too easy, only allow yourself to do this once or twice. Allow a certain number of misses. This downgrades the Ghost to a lower level player, essentially. I don’t really like this variation, but some people enjoy it. Allow yourself to take ball in hand one time during the course of your run-out. However, if you miss or foul, you still lose. Are you a straight pool player? Instead of a loss, give yourself a penalty for every miss. For example, during a race to 100, when you miss, the Ghost gets 10 balls. Essentially, you are playing a game of singleplayer straight pool, with 9 allowed misses. Giving the Ghost points, however, adds an element of pressure that forces you to concentrate. If playing the ghost just isn’t your cup of tea, then

38 page April 2014

Joey: Keep your head on straight and I have learned what not to do from lots of people. Pay attention to what you can learn from a lot from dumb people, lol… Viper: What’s your Favorite game? Joey: I love is playing One-Pocket to death its my passion, but I am getting back into rotation and I hope to take it to the next level soon. A special “Thank-you” to Joey for taking time out of his busy schedule to participate in my “Ask the Viper”. Till next month, you can find me on Facebook: www.facebook.com/melissalittleakatheviper

simply keep track of your misses, and play a set of 5 racks. Your total number of misses becomes your “handicap,” much like golf. Over time, your goal is to reduce that number. Compare with your friends to see who is the best! There are other ways to challenge yourself than playing the Ghost, of course. One of my favorites is Fargo (http://tinyurl.com/fargorules). Playing the Ghost is a very aggressive form of pool, and it doesn’t work on every aspect of your game. It doesn’t allow for the incorporation of safeties, for example. But it does take some of the tedium out of your practice sessions. Pool is supposed to be fun. Unless you are a professional, practicing 8 hours per day, you are most likely not going to enjoy shooting 500 straight shots in a row. You want to play a game, and challenge yourself. Playing the Ghost is a great way to challenge yourself, set goals, and still enjoy your billiards game of choice. Good Luck! time into studying the game and practice incessantly, you’ll eventually get to a point where you can make the balls do whatever you want. I

saw many players just smash the hell out of the balls, hoping something would drop. And many times, they did. But the most successful players understood where the balls were going, controlled their cue ball, and played clean, precise pool. Congratulations to Justin Bergman for being the cleanest and most precise, and winning the tournament. It was an incredible display of amazing 9-ball. If you are interested in knowing more about Joe Tucker’s techniques for reading racks and breaking, I strongly recommend you visit his website at joetucker. net and picking up a copy of his books and DVDs. I have always respected his knowledge, but to see it in action at the tournament was quite something. I was very impressed. Do you have some tips on breaking that you’d like to share with me? Do you have any suggestions for future articles? Drop me a line at pool@mikekglass. com. I can also be found hanging out with fellow pool enthusiasts at http://www.reddit.com/r/billiards. Come on by and join the discussion!
