Hundreds of spectators watched the finals and many of the marque matchups as they played out during the tournament. Online over 40,000 viewers tuned in to watch the finals as well as the many hours of live

streamed coverage. The $1000 added Men’s Bud Lite WarmUp 8-ball tournament took place Thursday evening before main event. League players and those entered in Main event were welcome to play. 96 men entered the $25 entry, race to 3, Double elimination event. The short race can be a real equalizer with top players and was a lure to our local league players who hoped for the opportunity to play the best in the world. There was over $3200 in prize money up for grabs and, in the end, it was Dennis Orcollo taking 1st and $1000 followed by Oscar “Gentleman” Dominquez in 2nd place ($640), Jeffery Ignacio 3rd ($400), Ernesto Dominquez 4th ($260), Hunter Lombardo and Warren Kiamco 5th/6th ($160 each). The Women’s WarmUp tournament saw Bernie Store from Arizona run through the field of 18 women to take top spot ($370) followed by Janet Dunks from Montana 2nd ($180), Mary Coffman 3rd ($100) and Juanita Brown from Utah 4th ($50). The Calcutta went off well. Auctioning through both fields took some time but it was well worth it. There was a net $26,370 in the men’s and $4,460 in the women’s. Paul “Kez” Marquez was calling on bidders to buy horses. His enthusiasm propelled the bids. Runners Denise Pulido and Darcy Williams ran holes in the carpet bring in money. It was a fun and exciting event. Top Horses were Dennis Orcollo, Jeffery Ignacio, Skyler Woodward. Top Calcutta prize was $10,230. Producing the Chinook Winds Open events take 100’s of hours. Cocoordinators/directors Andrew Monstis and Mike Jensen ran the event from start to finish. Bill Henderson and the WBCA team: Eileen Madden, Darcy Williams, Robbin Iredale (PR staff coordinator), Cathy Dunford (financial manager) and Pam Caraway (Podium manager) & all involved staff worked together to make this event successful. “It was about pool”. The acclaim came in from all fronts. It was very gratifying to hear the applause coming from both participants and spectators. Players new to the event said they had never seen such a distinguished event and are coming back to play at the next one in October. The event is growing nationally and world wide in stature with professionalism and popularity. The Chinook Winds Open 8-Ball in March had Mosconi Cup Points available to the pro’s as they vie for a spot on

Team USA. A huge gallery of spectators watched many excellent matches as the Tournament unfolded. People were able to watch Janet Dunks and Bernie Store and learn what great pool playing is about. The crowds were in awe of top players like Nicole Keeney, Liz Lovely, Kelly Isaac, Dennis Orcollo, Michael Dechaine, Jeffery Ignacio, Skyler Woodward, Corey Deuel, Oscar and Ernesto Dominquez, Steve Knoll, Marc Vidal, Rodney Morris, Scott Frost, Hunter Lombardo, Rene Rendon, Shawn Wilkie, Jason Klatt, and Chris McDaniels. They were equally astonished by top local players Cindy Sliva, Kim Jones, Eddie Carrido, and Damian Pongpanik, to name but a few. Terry Stonier Reunion Tournament A special thanks to all 78 players who made the trip in the pouring rain to play in the 47th Annual Terry Stonier Reunion Tournament. It was two solid days of action at the Jointed Cue in Sacramento, CA. Congratulations to Vilmos Foldes for taking home the title, $3000.00 and the coveted Victory Cup. There was great play from a number of players including former Reunion Tournament champ Danny Gokhul, who battled hard from the loser side and took Vilmos to a second set in the finals. Ask anybody. Stroking is better than poking. Now ask them why. “Um, uh, it looks better.” Yes, it certainly does look better, but let’s peer a little more deeply. This is a big deal. The jump from poking to stroking is huge. But if you’re ever going to be an excellent player, you’re gonna have to do it. A nice stroke is highly desirable. With it come better touch and speed control, and more consistent action. It feels good, and it looks good. So what are we talking about? We’ve all seen beautiful strokes, and knew they were beautiful somehow, even though they may look quite different from each other. We’ve heard comments like “he’s got mercury in his arm,” or “that’s a sweet stroke.” What are we seeing there? I think we’re seeing a silky, fluid, ultra-smooth swinging motion. It’s a motion that tells us that cue is pretty much directly connected to the player’s intent – his mental image of what he wants the ball to do. It’s a stroke that has been honed through hundreds or thousands of hours and is now smooth, simple, effortless, and accurate. Jerry Briesath says a stroke is “a beautiful throwing motion.” I like that image. What are some of the qualities of a stroke? The stick swings without effort, very smoothly, with no jerky transitions, no hitches, no muscle. It feels like you’re ever so smoothly throwing the stick through the ball. The right feeling is to feel like you’re accelerating through the ball. You’re releasing the stick, not pushing it or pulling it back. When you’re not ready to shoot – you’re not focused, you don’t like your plan, you’re not confident you’re aiming accurately – your stroke will suffer. A great stroke is without doubt. What characterizes a poke? Pokes are jerky. The stick looks like it’s being muscled around. Often, an overly tight grip will lead to pokes. If your hand is clenched, your forearm is also involved, along with some of your upper arm musculature. This “extra” muscle use interferes with the fluidity of the swing, making it look more like a jab. Where a stroke can be said to accelerate smoothly forward, a poke decelerates, actually slowing down on the way to the ball. A lag speed stroke might naturally yield a followthrough of about 4” or 5” past the cueball. This

is because the player doesn’t try to stop the stick. He throws it and commits. Meanwhile, a lag speed poke may follow through half-way into the cueball, or not at all. This is because the player is slowing the stick. Watch closely and see how players don’t follow through, or just follow a little. To do that, they had to be pulling back against the forward motion of the stick. Instead of just allowing the bicep to pull the stick forward in the swing, the tricep is working too. They’re fighting each other. It’s pretty hard to have the kind of touch and consistency you need as a player when you’re moving in two opposing directions at once. Here are a few things to try in your quest for a better stroke: • Check your follow-through. The idea is to allow the natural amount of follow-through for the speed of the stick. Poking comes from interfering with the simple, natural forward swing. Throw the stick and let it go as far as it goes. Don’t pull back. • No clenching. Any muscle tension you’re holding, especially in the shooting arm, interferes with the free flow of the stroke. Try to find your clenches and let them go. One way to do that is to clench a muscle hard and try to stroke. Let it go. Soften. Now, let it go some more. Keep stroking and observe what happens as you soften. • Increase touch. Most good players heft the butt of the cue as part of their pre-shot routine. They are trying to get the feel of the cue, connecting with its weight, shape, and texture. For most players, a light grip provides better touch, a better joining of cue and player. • Melt your triceps. On the hit stroke, try an image of the tricep giving up more and more completely as the stick moves forward through the swing. • No hitting. Pokers hit the cueball. They hit it and stop there. Strokers toss the stick confidently through the ball, like it’s not even there. They don’t hit the ball – they connect with it. • Trust your skills. Your body knows how to line up the shot and how hard to shoot. Throw the stick and trust it. You can’t really effectively steer or change speed during the hit stroke anyway. Don’t interfere with a beautiful thing.

How many times have you gone to the pool hall to practice, or bang the ball with your friends, only to feel a little blasé about the usual games? 8-ball just seems so... plain, and you’re just not feeling 9-ball. Straight pool? Boring! One-Pocket? Um… what part of “boring” didn’t you understand? It would sure be nice if there were some other games to play, wouldn’t it? Fear not, my friend! I’m here to help! Over the next few articles, I’m going to teach you some new games to play. Hopefully, these will help you out on those days when you want to play something a little more unconventional! This month’s game is Honolulu. Other names for this game are Banks, Kisses and Combos, or Indirect. It’s a very similar game to Banks. The object of the game of Honolulu is to be the first player to pocket 8 balls. A ball only counts if you make it in the pocket you call. And it only counts if you make it by any means, except straight in. That’s right – you can bank it, kick it, carom, or make a combo. As long as you call the ball and pocket, and it goes in any other way than straight into the pocket, you score a point and continue your turn at the table. The caveat here is that you cannot “kick” or “bank” off of the rail that’s connected to the pocket. So, a shot that goes into the corner after brushing the rail just before it goes in does NOT count – that’s considered a straight-in shot.

Called shots must even be made on the break. A common call is the head ball in the side pocket. If you do not pocket a called ball, 2 balls must hit a rail. Failure to do so is a foul. Fouls are standard: failure to hit a rail after striking a ball, scratching, and hitting the cue ball off of the table are all fouls. The penalty for fouling is the loss of a ball. If you have made balls, one ball is brought back to the table and is spotted on the foot spot. If you do not have any balls down, you will owe a ball. Honolulu is a fantastic game to practice some of your more unorthodox shots. It also teaches you to look at the table a little differently, and may open your eyes to new possibilities that you may not have considered in a standard game of 8-ball. If this game is a little too challenging for you, you might consider playing with 9 balls, instead of 15, and the first person to make 5 balls wins. Another variation is to take ball-in-hand for every shot, or at the beginning of each inning. Sounds like this would be easy, but believe me, it’s still challenging. This is also a good way to handicap your game if your opponent is a weaker player – they get ball in hand every time, and you do not. Killing the Cue Ball

When playing position, you often need to move the cue ball an uncomfortably long distance. Other times you will run into shots like in the diagram where you need to minimize how far the cue ball goes. Let’s work on some techniques that will help you “kill the rock”. In Shot 1, you have a fairly thin cut on the 6 ball and you want to stop the cue ball close to the cushion for the 7 ball. I suppose you could go up and down the table twice, but that is a pretty hard shot to control to get nearly straight on the 7. Instead, use draw to slow the cue ball down after it hits the 6. Most players know draw for its ability to make the cue ball come back after a nearly full hit. The effect on a thin hit is quite a bit different. At the cue ball leaves the 6 ball, the draw puts on the breaks and significantly slows down the ball, holding the travel of the cue ball to maybe a quarter as far as it would go with a simple rolling shot. In order for the shot to work well, you will need your very best draw, which means you will need to hit the cue ball as low as possible without miscuing. Chalk well and then inspect your tip. Did you leave any bare spots? When starting to practice this technique, it also helps for the cue ball to be quite close to the 6 ball so that not much draw is lost on the way to the 6 ball. Now you are going to find the range of cut angles where you can use the draw technique. Start your tries with an angle so wide (a very thin hit) that it seems impossible to stop the cue ball in time and still get the 6 ball to the pocket. Adjust your speed until the 6 ball just rolls over the brink of the pocket. If the cue ball goes too far even when it feels like you had your best draw on the cue ball, make the cut angle a little less severe and try again until you find the toughest angle where you can control the cue ball. If you make the cut angle easier still, you will need to dial back on the draw or it will make the cue ball curve into the 8 and 9. You should still be able to get position but it will eventually turn into a stun shot -- a shot where the cue ball contacts the object ball with close to zero spin. Shot 2 shows a possible result from Shot 1. You have some angle on the 7 ball and you have to keep the cue ball from bouncing off the cushion too far or you won’t have a shot on the 8 ball. Ideally, you would like to leave the cue ball almost touching the cushion. You will be working on this shot for a while, so let’s make it easy to set up. The 7 is exactly one ball diameter off the cushion and even with the first diamond, as shown. Your job here is to find out how far from the cushion you can put the cue ball and still make

the 7 and leave the cue ball close to the cushion -- say within a chalk space. Exactly which combination of speed, side spin and draw/ follow works best here depends on the table conditions, so you will have to experiment. My suggestion is to first try right English on the equator of the cue ball and to shoot no harder than needed to make the 7 ball. Of course it will help to cheat the pocket, and with a short shot like this you should be able to send the 7 to the right side of the pocket without much risk of missing. Once you have a set of spins and speed that works well, try starting the cue ball out farther and farther until you can’t kill the rock well enough to have a shot.

“Harness the Power from Within” When asked the question, nearly all pool players stated that “Nerves” were the most common reason that they miss important shots during match play. Most believe they need to shoot every tournament ball as if it were practice. They believe if they could play like they practice, their performance level would escalate. That precept couldn’t be further from the truth. First of all, people perceive a case of the “nerves” as something 100 percent negative. Even good players fail to recognize that it is possible to harness all of that energy and transform it into a powerful force that can propel your game forward. Some players fear poor performance in front of others, or not being able to play to the level that they expect during crucial end game situations. People get nervous for all sorts of reasons but usually it is linked to the fact that they want to win. Players need to take a hard look at the feelings they have about themselves so they can better understand that being nervous is actually just a negative way of saying something that is quite positive. Being nervous simply means that you are contentious about how you want to be perceived when you perform in front of others. “Nerves” are viewed as being bad because we associate them with fears or doubts that are related to how we may or may not perform. What we have to do is start associating our “nervousness” with something positive. Like it or not, you will never get rid of the “nerves.” You just have to learn how to handle them during key situations. In fact, pro pool players actually welcome “nerves” because it helps put them in the “zone.” Essentially, it helps them focus all of their attention and channel their excess energy into doing all the

right things that need to be done. Most players don’t even know what they are capable of. They have never even tried to convert excess negative energy into something positive. One thing is for sure: If you never leave your comfort zone, you will never be able to figure out how great of a player you could become. Being nervous just means that you are in uncharted waters and are uncomfortable because you are unsure of what might happen. If this seems all too familiar to you, then you should try to focus all of your energy back into your game. Just try to view each match as an opportunity to play your best. Always try to be as prepared as you can for each shot. This will also help make you more confident and will help you to replace negative thoughts and emotions with positive ones. In fact, nervous energy can actually help you reach a state of awareness significantly higher than exhibited during practice. That is where a good pre-shot routine comes in. There is nothing better than a good preshot routine to help you focus all of your energy into something positive. A well thought out pre-shot routine also gives you an outlet for all of your excess energy. Focusing on the process will help you to play in the present rather dwelling on the past. Once you start to incorporate a positive approach into your pre-shot process, your game will improve by leaps and bounds. Remember, it is also important to focus on breathing properly; it will help you to relax. Concentrate on all of the good things that could happen to you and forget any negative experiences from the past. Once you develop a good “feel” for the game, you can stop thinking about stroke mechanics. This in itself is something positive, simply because most of us are taught that we play poorly because we have some sort of mechanical problem. In reality, our poor performance may be related to the fact that we are becoming tense and letting nervous energy get the best of us. In the future, try to think about “nerves” as something that will give you body the extra energy needed to perform well. Don’t tense up; just try to relax! Learn to harness your inner power and use it in both a positive and productive way.

STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

I was introduced to this great shot by my good friend and toughest opponent, Mike Massey. We were playing against each other in the then very successful ESPN Trick Shot Magic and he pulled this shot off scoring a beautiful point. Being 7-8 inches shorter than Mike did not help me as I had a hard time leaning over as much as the shot required so I could not adjust within the allotted two tries and lost a precious point. It goes without saying that the first thing I did as I got back home was to practice this shot which still is a pretty challenging one but definitely makeable within 2-3 tries. As shown in the diagram, place your Cue Ball frozen to the long rail at 1.5 diamond distance from the top left corner pocket. Then start placing all the obstacle balls around it: two balls frozen to it and perpendicular to the long rail; one ball frozen to the long rail at half diamond from the corner pocket; one ball one inch away from the long rail and at the second diamond. Lastly place three more balls frozen to each other and to the short rail at 1.5 diamonds from the same upper left corner pocket and the Object Ball by the lower left corner pocket. This is not the most comfortable shot as you will need to place your elevated bridge hand between the Cue Ball and the Obstacle Ball (the brown ball). Then you’ll need to raise your right leg and rest it on top of the table for a good reach. As you see, you will need to aim into the long rail, almost at the first diamond so you can either bring your forearm out and parallel to the table’s surface, if you want to use a regular grip, or you can keep your forearm closer to your body if you want to use the European style inverted grip, the one I use for all my masse shots. Elevate your cue by 45-50⁰ and hit the CB at 10:30 with 2.5 tips of English. We need a lot of spin on our CB as we want it to draw a curve once it comes off the rail and still hold some spin when it bounces off the second rail so it can slightly curve around the two object balls (the black and the blue ones). Hit the CB firmly with a 2.5-3 stroke. That should be enough to clear the 2 obstacle balls next to it and make your OB (the yellow one) in the bottom left corner pocket. A clean CB and a new cloth make this shot a little easier and if you don’t want to dirty the cloth or, even worse, to damage it, you may want to use my Cloth Shield (US Patent Pending). What is there left to say about Lincoln City, Oregon and Chinook Winds Casino Resort that hasn’t already been said? Not much really. It is still and will always be a beautiful place for a pool tournament. There was much to do both inside the casino and out and about the Lincoln City area. This March 13-20 was hampered by strong winds and rain much of the time, including several days where the beach was just not a safe place to be. In spite of the weather, all 1400+ players managed to keep pretty busy inside. Chinook Winds again rolled out the red carpet for us. BadBoys Billiards Productions again set up 80 7-foot Diamond tables and lights and provided excellent tournament direction. Head Referee Darryl Farley again assembled a fine staff of nationally certified referees to oversee the play on the tables. Western BCA’s incredible staff of volunteers was again on hand and eager to help the players in any way with Tournament Officials led by Steve Marker, Podium Staff overseen by Pam Carraway and Payouts Staff under the supervision of Cathy Dunford to name but a few. Lenny Marshall of OntheRailTV again live streamed many hours of match play. As always, it was a group effort and we hope all the players had a great tournament experience.

While the Chinook Winds Opens were winding down on Sunday, the Scotch Doubles divisions By the time ‘Fun Night’ rolled around (the evening were getting underway. Open Scotch Doubles was a record breaker with 165 pairs, 24 more than 2015’s 141. The final would feature 4 new faces: Jose Velazquez/Suzanne Mackey(SWI) and Edwin Ambo/Sue Carroll(LTD). Jose/Suzanne won the hot seat match, beating EV’s Ian Sharp/Tina Wolf 4-2 and sending them to the back side for one more try at the final. Ed/Sue had another plan, knocking Ian/Tina into 3rd place ($1200) and moving on to the final themselves. Jose/Suzanne wasted no time getting out to a 2-0 lead before Ed/Sue got on the board in game 3 (2-1). Jose/Suzanne took game 4 (3-1). Ed/Sue made a move, taking games 5 and 6, tying the match at 3-3. Ed/Sue had two shots at the 8-Ball but just couldn’t put the match away (2nd place/$1600). Jose/Suzanne ran off their last 5 balls to capture the title and a check for $2100 along with it.

Championships Biggest Ever out to take the match and the $2300 prize.

Singles started as Scotch Doubles was wrapping up on Monday. First on the tables was the Men’sB division with 308 entrants all after the $1400 1st place prize. Both finalists went through their preliminary brackets undefeated. John Gunn (EV) took the direct route to the final taking the hot seat match 4-2 from Blade Longmire (CWY). Tony Sandoval (UMP), on the other hand, took the long way to the final, losing his first bracket match until he, too met up with Blade in the back side semi. Blade lost that match by the same 2-4 score and went home in 3rd place ($800). Tony ran over John 4-0 in the first set, hoping for a double dip. It wasn’t meant to be, however, as John took the second set 4-2. Tony took home $1050 for his efforts and Champion John happily accepted the check for $1400. Both men showed that they are ready for the Men’sA division. The second largest division, the Men’sA, began their quest for the championship Tuesday morning with 206 eying the 1st place check for $1700. This division,

like the Men’sB, saw both eventual finalists going unbeaten through their preliminary bracket. This time, however, both finalists went on to the winner’s side point match. Richard Henderson (LTD) and Carl Tibbetts (INL) played a very tight semi with Richard just edging out Carl to gain the hot seat. Meanwhile, Somerfield Habener (EV), after winning his preliminary bracket, lost his first match on the final bracket and had to win 5 matches to get to the final. Somerfield was to be denied as Carl took their back side semi handily (5-2), leaving Somerfield with

age range but they can still play pool and this final did not disappointment. John Aranda (CPL) made his way into the final undefeated while Dave Secord (MTV) lost his 2nd match and took a longer route to get there, including a repeat match with Joe Chun (LTD) who had sent him to the back side early on. Dave had only to get by Dave Thompson (NPL), who lost the hot seat match to Mr. Aranda. Dave wasted no time in doing so, taking the back side semi 5-1, sending Dave Thompson home in 3rd place/$380. In the final, Dave was pretty hot going in and took the first set handily 5-2. By the second set, John was warmed up and slowed Dave (2nd place/$530) down somewhat, taking the decider 5-3 and collected the 1st place check for $700.

a pretty good payday (3rd place/$945). The final was a good one with both men pretty evenly matched andhungry for the title. Carl got on the board first with a table run after Richard’s dry break. Richard evened the score with a table run of his own after Carl fouled on the break. Whoever says the break isn’t important just isn’t paying attention. Carl got the next two games, capitalizing on a couple of errors on Richard’s part to take the lead 3-1. Richard took the next game after Carl missed the 8-Ball and left him with an open table. Carl answered back with a break and run to get on the hill 4-2. Richard took the next two back and forth games to even the match 4-4. The deciding game started out a little shaky until Carl took control and ran out to force a second set. Richard took off in the second set, taking the first two games. Carl answered back taking the next two games, including a break and run for good measure. 2-2. Richard broke and ran in game 5 to take the lead 3-2. Game 6 was a messy one but after Richard missed his 8-Ball, Carl ran out to even the match 3-3. Carl only got to the table one more time in the final two games and that resulted in a dry break. He could only watch as Richard took complete control with a break and run in game 7 and a table run in game 8. Both Carl (2nd place/$1260) and Richard 1st place/$1700) will be joining the big boys in the Master division and more than proved they are ready to make the move in this final. The Men’s Senior Singles final is always a good one. The 53 men in this division may all be in the 60-70+

hill-hill match with Paul for the hot seat. Paul had only to get by Mike Deitchman (CPL), who lost his first match to Mike Stevens (NPL) and was also on a mission to get to the final. Paul denied Mike (3rd place/$400) as he took the back side semi 7-1. Game 1 was one of those brain lapses that rarely happen at this level. Paul, for whatever reason, let go, crashing into balls and eventually made the early 8-Ball. Game 1 to Steve. The next 9 games were 7 table runs following dry breaks (in itself pretty odd) and two break and runs, tying the match at 5-5. Paul broke in game 11, ran 4 balls before missing the only shot in the match. Steve ran out and was on the hill (6-5). Paul never got back on the table (2nd place/$600). Leaving nothing to chance in game 12, Steve broke and ran to close out the match and claim the title and a check for $1000. Fine shooting, gentlemen. The Women’s Master division final was a lopsided affair. New Master CarlaJean Beers (SWI) lost her first match and had to play her way past some tough competitors to get to the back side semi against Eileen Stephens (EV), who would finish in 3rd place/$440) after a 5-2 match with CarlaJean. Natasha Hook (CPL) traveled through the winner’s side of the bracket unbeaten and was more than ready for whoever came through to the final. CarlaJean played well but Natasha wouldn’t let her get to the 8-Ball in all but game 2, which CarlaJean won after Natasha ran 5 balls then hooked herself and fouled on the subsequent shot allowing Carla Jean (2nd place/$680)

Her last obstacle was Claire Binci (MID), who lost the front side semi with Lisa 4-1. Kirsten wasted no time with Claire (3rd place/$370), winning that match 4-0. Lisa and Kirsten played even through the first 4 games then Lisa took over to take the next two games and closed out the match 4-7. Kirsten took home 2nd place and $505 and Lisa happily accepted the title and a check for $680. Good shooting, Ladies.

Championships Biggest Ever out. In game 10, David badly missed a difficult but makeable 8-Ball and Mike ran out and it was hill-hill. Mike broke and ran off all the solids and missed a tight 8-Ball, giving David a chance to take control of the game. Unfortunately, the balls were not laying to his liking and he played a good safety. Mike managed to make a good two rail kick to tie up the 8-Ball and leave David with no choice but to play a safety. Still smarting from his 8-Ball miss in the previous game, David (2nd place/$1250) compounded his frustration by fouling, leaving Mike with ball in hand on the 8-Ball. Mike more than earned the title, the $1850 1st place check and his place in the GrandMaster division.

The Men’s/Mixed Open Teams also got started early Friday with 72 teams in the hunt for 1st place. Again, the final would be a rematch between the front side point match teams. NPL’s Short Yellow Bus (Ray Galli, Mike Jensen, Steve Pulido, Darrell Schulden and Randy White) took the point match 13-12 from INL’s Tremors (Don Armstrong, Jason Defilippis, Randy Ohrstrom, Mark Thompson, Brian Kvasnicka and Carl Tibbetts). Tremors faced off against LTD’s Two Drink Minimum (Cody Clark, Bill Irons, David Lauer, Scott Perry, Ford Rice and Chris Rogers). Two Drink Minimum (3rd place/$1700) lost 8-13. Short Yellow Bus (1st place/$2800) wanted no part of a double dip so closed out the final set 13-8, led by Randy with 4 games and Darrell with 3. Tremors, led by Carl with 3 wins, finished in 2nd place/$2175. Women’s Master Teams fielded 16 teams to take the title. The Four Noble Truths (Catherine Duenas, Cassie Francois, Regene Lane and Cindy Sliva) Went to the final undefeated. That’s How We Roll (Melyssa Chasteen, Sheila Clark, Liz Cole and Suwanna Matarazzo) came through the back side. That’s How We Roll (1st place/$2020) made it a true double dip, taking the first set from The Four Noble Truths (2nd place/$1140)11-9, led by Melyssa with 4 wins and Suwanna with 3, and the second 11-2 led by Sheila with 4 wins and Suwanna with 3. As with the WMT division, the Women’s Open Teams ended in a true double dip. NPL’s Dangerous Cues (Robin Adams, Lisa Anderson, Kristin Cambas and Kimberly Engh) would beat CPL’s Lady Luck (Tracey Cunningham, Kirsten Fery, Linda (Smitty) Smith and Raquel Walton) in the front side semi 9-6 but could not handle them when they came back around to get into the final. In the first set, Lady Luck won 9-4 led by Kirsten with 4 wins. They call it The Freeze; an annual event, hosted by Malarkey's Pool & Brew in Tacoma, WA. Given that temperatures throughout this year's March 5-6 event ranged in the upper 50s to low 60s, the title's a bit of a misnomer, and given the level of competition generally on display, you'd think it would boast a title with a touch more heat to it. Last year, Shane Van Boening defeated Rafael Martinez in the finals. This year, Marc Vidal and Simon Pickering worked their way around a host of other marquee names (Warren Kiamco, Jeffrey Ignacio and John Morra, for example) to be the last two standing. Vidal went undefeated in the $1,500-added event that drew 72 entrants to Malarkey's. Vidal and Pickering met first in the hot seat match. Vidal had sent Kiamco to the loss side 7-4, as Pickering was doing likewise, 7-5, to Ignacio in the

winners' side semifinals. Vidal moved into the hot seat 7-5 over Pickering and waited for him to get back. On the loss side, Kiamco had the misfortune of running into a surging John Morra, who'd defeated Paul Poitier 7-4 and Eddie Carrido 7-2 to reach him. Ignacio picked up Damian Pongpanik, who'd just eliminated Sean Lewis and Dan Louie, both 7-3. Ignacio and Morra moved on to the quarterfiinals, both 7-5, over Pongpanik and Kiamco. Morra defeated Ignacio 7-4, and then, by the same score, was himself eliminated in the semifinals by Pickering. defends her title Washington State 9 Ball Championships

CINDY SLIVA On March February 27-28th - the NWPA’s first tour stop of the 2016 season, the Washington State 9 Ball Championships, was hosted by Malarkey’s Pool & Brew in Tacoma, WA. The tournament was ran on 9 9-foot Gold Crowns with Rail2Rail Productions providing a free live stream all weekend. The NWPA tour standings and 2016 schedule are available at www.nwpatour.com and is sanctioned by the newly formed North American Pool Tour. New tour sponsors include mzTam.com, who donated 5 goody bags to the NWPA player rewards program, and Dave Jones, who will be donating a custom cue towards increasing player payouts. Get in touch with your favorite NWPA ladies to learn more about purchasing raffle tickets as details are finalized. Twenty-three ladies came out to compete Saturday morning. There was one new player to the tour, Miranda Sellman from Oregon originally, but now residing in Gig Harbor, WA. The tournament was ran on 9 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crowns. The format was a race to 7, alternating break, 9 ball, with a race to 6 on the B side. The main event was $500 added and a second chance tournament was held on Sunday for players who did not make it into the money rounds. Sunday morning, eight players remained. A side match ups included Cindy Sliva vs. Kira North and Julie Suzanne Smith vs. Tricia Heintz. Cindy and Suzanne both advanced through their morning matches, 7-0 and 7-5. Suzanne responded breaking and running her second rack of the finals to reach the hill. At 8-3, Suzanne faltered, made some critical errors, including a miss on what could have been her winning 9 ball. At 8-7, Cindy appeared to be running out to tie the set at 8-8, when she got funny on the 7 ball. She pocketed the 7, but left herself long on the 8, which she missed. Suzanne was able to close out the rack and win the event with the final score of 9-7.

The February version of the Andy Cloth Nubbins Memorial Monthly Pool Tournament in Saratoga, WY was held on February 5th & 6th. Wyoming was represented with players from Rawlins, Saratoga, Cheyenne, Pine Haven, Rock Springs and Casper who battled it out for the 8-ball title. Rock Springs, WY swept the top three spots this month and the eventual champion Brian Jackson went through the field undefeated en route to a 1st place finish that included wins over Mark Osborne, Spencer Martin, Tom Thompson and two wins over his traveling buddy, Kris Black, who took the runner-up money from the tournament and shot strong all weekend before bowing to Jackson in the finals. The third player from their vehicle, Spencer Martin, took down the three spot to make it a Sweetwater County sweep way to go guys! Pool in Rock Springs, WY is strong! Local Saratoga, WY player, Mack Pride had another strong showing during the weekend and finished up in the 4th place spot. Anthony Lucero of Rawlins, WY and Steve Barber of Saratoga, WY took the 5th place tie spots. These tournaments continue each month with $1,000 added to each tournament and only a $30 entry fee which is paid back to the players 100%. The fact that there are no green fees or quarters required and $49 per night motel rooms this tournament is certainly a must for all rocky mountain regional players or those just passing through the area! The Tiger West Coast Women’s Tour (TWCWT) is getting ready to kick off their 2016 season with some important changes to its format as well as its affiliation. TWCWT has been affiliated with the Women’s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA) since the very beginning of the tour. The top finishers get invitations to the annual Regional Tour Championship and, when a qualifier is held, the highest finishing player (who has paid the WPBA membership) gets invited to participate in one of their events. Last year, the WPBA decided that all players on the regional tours should be required to pay the $25 membership fee, even if they only played one stop. In the past, TWCWT has offered the fee as an option only for those interested. In response to these recent changes, the North American Pool Tour (NAPT) has been formed! The NAPT unites tours across the country, both amateurs and professionals, and provides an opportunity for players to compete at the highest level. The NAPT will host its own version of the Regional Tour Championships, so that players who join can earn points toward invitations. Kevin Yi, the TWCWT Tournament Director and NAPT/RTC representative, will share more information at the Kickoff event, held at Hard Times Sacramento this May. The TWCWT committee has been restructured, including losing one of their members, Stephanie Hefner, who has relocated. The Tour has also added two new sponsor to its roster. Edgie’s Billiards, located in Milpitas and Billiard Palacade, located in San Francisco. Edgie’s is family-owned business. Tony and Susie Bangoy have been running it from day one since 1994. They have 23 gold crowns, 6 heated chevillotte billiard tables and I snooker table. They run APA league that runs Sunday through Thursday nights. They run an 8 ball tournament every Tuesday, 9 ball every Wednesday and 3 cushion billiards every Friday plus every first Sunday of the month. Billiard Palacade is a family-owned business and has been serving since 1972. It is owned and operated by Francisco Murcia. It has 3 cushion tables (10 foot), 13 (9 foot) and 2( foot). It also offers a wide variety of appetizers, snacks and beverages. It runs SFPA tournament and a weekly Saturday event. We want to facilitate opportunities for women to take their game to a higher level while playing against the best in the area. Eleanor Callado – Budget & Finance Director Eleanor has played pool for over 20 years and through her hard work, dedication, and experience became the #16 ranked WPBA player in 2016. It is also because of her love for the sport that she contributes her time with the TWCWT board as their budget and finance director. With over eight years of accounting experience, she utilizes her strong financial management skills with budgeting and reporting all income and expenses for the tour. Kevin Yi – Tournament Director (running of tournaments, on-site activities) This is Kevin’s fifth year on the Board. In the past two years, he has helped with the refereeing, raffle and break pot, updated stats on the website, helped edit articles, acted as substitute tournament director, and acted as WPBA/NAPT liaison. Emilyn Callado – Membership & Communications Director, Tiger Bucks incentive program (member relations, outreach via Facebook, etc.) Emilyn is a national pool competitor. She has actively supported the tour for several

years by helping to run tournaments, recruit new pool rooms and players alike. After directing the tour in 2014, her main focus this year is to make all players feel welcome and to make the tour a positive and motivating experience for everyone. She also helps to connect players to pool resources and opportunities in the area. Eric Harada – Rules Director (referee and authority of rules) Eric has been a board member since 2013. He has been playing competitive pool for over 40 years. He has also been a professional level instructor for over 30 years. His duties include acting as co-director as well as head referee. Cony Mendoza – Sponsorship Director Cony has been part of the pool community for many years. She has competed in many venues including BCA Nationals, ACS Nationals, Tiger tour, and through the East Bay; Diablo Valley Pool Leagues. She is an avid promoter of TWCWT and also the sport of billiards in general. She runs local leagues, open tournaments, women leagues, Scotch doubles, and co-directs memorials such us the Piona Memorial. (www. dvpool.com). As sponsorship director she is responsible for recruiting new and returning sponsors for the upcoming seasons. She coordinates and communicates with our graphic designer, Annette Wood, to create tour advertisements in the form of posters, postcards, fliers, etc. She also generates write-ups for each tour stop that are submitted to On the Break Magazine. Tess Callado Tess has supported her twins, Emilyn and Eleanor, playing pool ever since they could barely reach the table! She started as a cheerleader in the sidelines, watching them compete on the tour over 8 years ago and now is actively involved with the tournament operations helping with the raffle and sales on tour. Naomi Manuel Naomi is an aspiring photographer and began shooting photos of friends playing pool which eventually interested her to shoot more photos of tournaments and wider scaled events. She started supporting the tour with her talent back in 2013 and is now our resident photographer. Last year, she made it to top 8 in one of the stops, so her love for the game is also showing. 2nd Annual Colorado Junior State 10-Ball Champions Crowned March 8, 2016 (Denver, CO): 21 junior players representing 3 states arrived at Mile High Billiards in Arvada for the 2nd Annual Colorado Junior State 109-Ball Championships held. The fields divided evenly into three divisions: 18 & Under Boys, 14 & Under Boys and 14 & under Girls. It was a fun day for all! 2015 Wyoming Jr State 8-Ball Champion snagged the 18 & Under title, while top 14 & Under champs Jerry Miller & Amanda Campbell claimed their divisions. Krapes in a 2-set match for the title. Krapes eliminated twin brother Brandon and Arizona’s star Jahnythan Craig to reach the finals.
