Lewistown – April 24-25, 2004 Getting to a tournament that is over 200 miles away can always be time consuming on back roads. I decided to take some extra time and drive the back roads that I haven’t driven for many years now. Leaving from Three Forks going to Townsend, White Sulphur, Harlowton then north
to Lewistown. Sometimes in our busy everyday lives we should stop to look and see what is around us. I had the distinct pleasure of getting behind a semi that was crawling up the canyon east of Townsend. I decided to pull over after several attempts to get around the semi and let (MCMOA continued on page 4)

APA Champions A Billiard Bonanza Crowned in Vegas Comes To Bozeman 2004 APA 9-Ball Shootout Singles Championship

Three champions were crowned Saturday afternoon in the $100,000 APA 9-Ball Shootout. In the green tier (SL 1-3), it was Heather Bielen (SL 2) of Sebastian, Fla., defeating Katie Graham (SL 3) of Saginaw, Mich., 25-8. In the white tier (SL 4&5), Rex Swett (SL 5) of Lakewood, Colo., defeated Butch White (SL 4) of Merritt Island, Fla., 38-26. In the black tier (SL 6-9), Frank Almanza (SL 9) of Upland, Calif., defeated Bill Buysse (SL 6) of Creve Coeur, Ill., 75-23. Almanza advanced to the final round with a victory over Eric Tang (SL 9) of New Britain, Conn. Buysse advanced after a win over Fidel Sanchez (SL 7) of Stuart, Fla. (APA continued on page 20)

him get up the road for the next 5 or 10 minutes. In my quest for serenity, I went over to the creek and watched a beaver rebuild his dam. Before I knew it 30 minutes had passed and I knew I had to get back on the road, leaving was harder than I would have anticipated. As I pulled off I decided to take in what was around me. This is after all the “Big Sky Country”. Snow capped mountains, hay fields, tree lined rolling hills with snow on the north side where the sun doesn’t hit until late afternoon, to going past Two Dot, a small town made famous in a song by Hank Williams, Jr. Most of us drove hundreds of miles to get to the state championship. I hope all of you had the same opportunity as I did. The tournament started Saturday, numbers were down about 10% from the previous year. This is the 3rd year that it was held in Lewistown, next year it will be in West Yellowstone, the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It was great to see all the people I haven’t seen all year long and the tournament ran smoothly. And for those of us who left their game at home, like myself, we were treated on Sunday to some spectacular pool. Jeff Boucher in the Men’s A, pretty much had his way at the table for the win. Women’s A went down to a battle between Sky Tigart from Great Falls and Linda Asleson from Billings. It proved to be a seesaw battle through both sets with Linda coming out victorious. Men’s B, Jeff Grinwis, a late entry into the tournament, walked pretty much through the tournament until he played Travis Hopstad. It went to a double set and more than just a couple missed 8-Balls in the side cost Travis the championship. Women’s B between Shellie Mitchell from East Helena and Aimee Neel of Bozeman also went to a double set. Shellie came back to tie it at hill-hill in the final game. She ran down to the 8, had a long difficult cut, missed it. Aimee was forced to play safeties the next couple of shots. Shellie was able to make the 8 and win the championship. Congratulations to all the champions and all the players for making this tournament what it is today. A special thank you to the MCMOA and its staff and hope to see everybody in West Yellowstone next year.

FEDERAL WAY, WA On April 3rd and 4th, PJ Pockets Casino held the first of what we all hope will be many weekend tournaments. The game was 8-ball and the format was a race to three until the money rounds, and then it was a race to five for the cash. Due to time constraints, the field was held to 32 players. With a $1,000.00 added, the field filled up quickly, with only a few players being turned away. Hopefully with our next tournament coming up on June 5th and 6th, Raul players won’t wait until the last minute to sign up. The field was varied in skill and experience and contained several local “big guns”. All in all, the tournament was deemed a success and hopefully with a couple of small changes will go even more smoothly next time. John Lewis Interview of Leagues and Player Programs. D”C”A: Good Morning John. JL: Good Morning Don. D”C”A: I’ve seen two different initials for the Alliance, what is the official one? JL: American CueSports Alliance, CueSports that’s one work with the S in sports being capitalized making it ACS and Alliance is silent. D”C”A: What are the plans for the leagues and when will they start? JL: Everything starts on June 1st when your fiscal offices start up. In the meantime, myself and Betty Harris, who was my main assistant from BCA, are working to put everything inline with the cooperation and guidance of our board of directors. There was a formation meeting in the Chicago, Illinois area March 27th and 28th by many of the larger leagues in the BCA system and some of the more influential state associations were present. I was not at that meeting; Betty was not at that meeting. We were offered positions after that. D”C”A: I had also read that the BCA had given up on the Olympics. Is the ACS going to pursue that? JL: Absolutely. In fact we’re the only group that can pursue it. It will take a few years to get affiliation with the United States Olympic Committee. The United States Olympic Committee wants to see a track record of any organization applying to it. However, I spent time, a week and a half ago with the ex-president of the United States Olympic Committee. He’s praised our efforts, he has a pretty good idea what’s going on in the cuesports industry. D”C”A: Good, I like seeing that and I want to see that advance as well. It was a shame that the BCA gave up on it and went another direction. JL: Here’s the BCA’s take on this from my understanding. A little over a year ago the BCA board made a decision to spin the league players program off to an all non-profit association that could still apply to the United States Olympic Committee. By doing that, that would allow the board of directors, which is all trade association people now, to become strictly a trade association. I think they had decided that the leagues and player issues were too distracting to the focus that they wanted to have. And when they made the decision, I thought it was a very wise decision and I still feel that way. However, somebody explained to this board of directors the next few months or at the next board meeting, just about nine months ago, trying to get into the Olympics would possibly never happen in our lifetime, and not sure that this situation would ever go. So if we’re going to spin these league player programs off why don’t we sell them and make some money. Now, what a lot of people don’t understand is Steve Ducoff, the Executive Director of the BCA, who served on the United States Olympic Committee board before,

tried to explain to the board over the years, is that applying to the United States Olympic Committee is not necessarily about getting in the Olympics. It is an extremely small step. There’s 200 national Olympic Committees out there from 200 different countries around the world and each cuesport federation that’s in existence in those countries is attempting to apply to their own national Olympic committees and the more you have on board, the better face you can give to applying to the International Olympic Committee. The United States Olympic Committee has very little to do with getting in the Olympics but that still doesn’t mean that it’s not a big thing. What happens is there are about four different strong benefits to affiliating with the United States Olympic Committee. First is you’re able to be in the position to become a Pan-American sport. Once the ACS becomes a PanAmerican level member to the United States Olympic Committee, (we have a very close relationship with our South American confederation in the World Billiard Association) they have some very strong Olympic contacts down there. Now it’s only a short matter of time to become a Pan-American sport. Once you become a PanAmerican sport you get subsidy money from the United States Olympic Committee, a fairly sizeable amount, which can be used towards things like, instructor programs, junior programs and referee programs. Programs that help develop your sport to a higher level. The athletes can come in at a higher level. That’s two of the big issues right there. The BCA board in my opinion, in naivety never even considered to be important. They were only looking at the long term getting the Olympics and just figured that that wasn’t going to happen. There are a couple of other issues, once we’re at that Pan-American level, we’re bonded with these other sports that have had recognition with the United States Olympic Committee. You don’t have to go through all this hassle of , “Are you even a sport – or not a sport”, that debate is out the door at that point. And we develop a bond with other credible sports out there in the public eye. A major fallout of that will be that we are possibly able to get corporate sponsorship from sponsors that are interested in sports that are tied in with the United States Olympic Committee. Those are the types of corporate sponsors that right now in the history of our sport in this country, that we can’t even touch. When you get in with the United States Olympic Committee, you start being able to open doors to these types of corporations. Again, Steve Ducoff, tried to explain that to the board but the board, in my opinion, never really saw the advantages of that. The Short Masse This months Artistic Shot is from the Masse Discipline and has a Degree of Difficulty (DOD) of 8. This skillful Masse is from the movie the Hustler. Here is a piece of trivia. This shot was also in the music video Bad To The Bone. W i l l i e Mosconi performed the shot for each one. Object ball A (at left) is approximately 1/8 inch from the cue ball or can be froze to the cue ball. A ball (at right) is 2 balls width away from the slate cut of pocket A and 1/2 inch off of the cushion. The object of this shot is to shoot the cue ball with a vertical Masse into A ball (at left) and toward the cushion of A ball (at right). After stroking the cue ball you will pocket A ball (at left) first and the cue ball will go up table as diagrammed and come back to pocket A ball (at right). Here are a couple of special notes: The cue ball doesn’t have to contact the cushion above A ball at right and a scratch is allowed. Here are a couple of helpful hints on executing this great shot. The elevation of your cue should be approximately 80 to 85 degrees. While standing behind the cue ball and aiming the cue ball to pocket B you would be cueing the cue ball at about a 7 o’clock position on the cue ball while looking down on the cue ball. Don’t try this shot with a hard tip, use a medium or soft tip. This shot can be made with a regular cue or a Masse cue. If you want to try this shot in your billiard room or sports bar get permission from the owner before you attempt it. If not you may be paying them to recover their table. Half-Ball Follow Secrets By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy In my last two columns, I covered aiming half-ball shots and the path of the cue ball when playing a half-ball shot with draw. This month, the subject is follow. Shot 1 is a practice shot that will help you get experience with the “halfball angle,” which refers to the angle the cue ball takes off an object ball when the cue ball is rolling smoothly on the table and hits half of the Bob Jewett object ball. A ball is rolling smoothly when it has neither draw nor stop nor excess follow, but is rolling just like your tires usually do on the highway. The practice shot will seem strange on paper, but I think you’ll really be amazed by it on the table. The cue ball is placed a few inches to the right of the head spot, and the object ball is on the foot spot. The goal is to make the cue ball after hitting half of the object ball on the left side. (There is a game played like this, in which you cue the object balls to send them into pockets after hitting the cue ball — you might call it “scratch pool” — and you may as well use object balls as your cue ball for this drill.) Shoot the shot will a little follow, and not much more speed than enough to get the cue ball to the pocket. If you hit half the ball on the foot spot as required, it will bank back close to a head pocket, and it should have just enough speed to

the head rail. The amazing thing about this shot is that you can scratch 20 times in a row with ease, while you might have trouble making the object ball 50% of the time. The angle of the cue ball is nearly constant for a fairly wide variety of cut
angles, and it will likely scratch even for cuts from 15 to 45 degrees. Hint: if you have the speed and cut angle right, and the ball is still not scratching, adjust your starting point slightly. If you have a heavy cue ball, the “sweet spot” might be a couple of inches farther from the center of the table. You can judge the position by noting where your stick passes over the rail, or mark the table. Once you get a feel for the angle, and have made the scratch ten times in a row, try turning the stick around and shooting with the rubber bumper — you’ll need an open bridge. Some foolish people have been known to bet that you can’t scratch like this. While the shot in the diagram is not immediately useful, the cue ball angle that it teaches is. There are lots of shots that are between 15 and 45 degrees of cut, and if you shoot at a speed that lets the cue ball roll smoothly on the cloth, the cue ball will come off the object ball at that halfball follow angle. If you’ve done the practice above, the angle will be burnt into your retina, and you’ll know the cue ball’s exact future path. It is perhaps the most important fact to know for position play after the “tangent line” principle that says the cue ball and object ball paths initially diverge at right angles. Note that the path of the cue starts out perpendicular to the path of the object ball, and then curves forward from the follow. On a soft shot, the curved part is often unnoticed, but after ten minutes of practice, you’ll start to see the path on the cloth. The shot is also very useful for safety play. get the Olympics or we don’t get the Olympics. That to me was very shortsighted, they think this is the point of this whole thing. They used that as one of their reasons, one of their justifications for spinning off the league system. D”C”A: You mentioned about the youth pool and of that I’m a strong supporter. I support it in “The Break” as well. My concern is and correct me if I’m wrong, the BCA held on to that end of it. JL: Correct D”C”A: As parents, as pool players and those of us that support the junior pool, whether it’s billiard suppliers, pool rooms or wherever it may be, why should we trust the BCA that they are not going to bail out on the players there? JL: I don’t think the BCA will. I think the BCA Trade Association has the resources to support that program to a greater extent than anyone else does and that’s why we want to support the change of program under the BCA Trade Association, at least for the short term. I think Carrie Benson is doing a very good job with that program. They get direction from the President of the Billiard Education Foundation, Tom Riccobene, who is looking strictly towards the future of the junior players and how this program can expand to more educational programs in the school systems around the country. We feel that that program is headed in a very strong direction and the ACS would not want to do anything but support the BCA Trade Association. D”C”A: I agree with the support of the junior pool, but a year ago you probably wouldn’t have thought that they would have sold the leagues off either. JL: You’ve got a point. I understand your concerns there and maybe that’s just going to be the general publics concern. The ACS will not let anything happen to the junior program through the BCA. We’ll do our own program if necessary and we do want to have junior programs in the long run but whatever we do we do not want to undermine the BCA program. We feel they are headed in the right direction. We certainly don’t want to bring the junior players into the politics or anything like that. We want to do exactly what’s right for the future of our sport and that includes the juniors. The ACS is going to be very sensitive about this but we have a very good relationship with Carrie Benson, of the BCA. We will be very supportive of the BCA Trade Association as far as the junior programs go. D”C”A: The BCA has been relatively silent, if not at all mute on decisions that they have made, whether it’s informing the league operators or about the balloting for the Hall of Fame. I have read a lot of emails that I’ve received, as well as online about why the BCA doesn’t make things public. The voting on the Hall of Fame, who got how many votes, is a curiosity. Do you know why the BCA didn’t release that information? Will the ACS be doing the same type of thing or are you going to release to the players the voting on what decisions are made? JL: Being a more player oriented organization, it’s our responsibility to make our membership (composed of players, league operators and league players) aware of what their board of directors, that they elected, is up to. The BCA Hall of Fame, I think it gets more criticism than it deserves. There really isn’t any hush hush stuff going on. They have a nomination committee, a Hall of Fame committee, made up of knowledgeable people. I think they come up with good nominees. There is an election process. There are ballots that go out in a very proper manner and some people would question, “Yeah, but they go out to the mainly industry people to vote on it”, and that’s the only thing that some people would have a problem with. D”C”A: They don’t release the numbers off of it either. JL: It’s not proper to state that one player go so many votes, and another player got so many votes. I don’t believe that’s the proper thing to do. D”C”A: They do in other sports, you see it on ESPN all the time. JL: I’m not going to defend the BCA here, but my own take from being inside the BCA is that the BCA does things in a proper manner as far as the Hall of Fame goes. However, I would like to explain that when the Board of Directors nine months ago made the decision to hire a broker to sell the league player programs, that was an astonishing thing to me. I really was aghast. First off, the Board of Directors did not ask me to address them on their decision. Being the league players program director I would’ve expected them to take all things into consideration before making their decision. It’s only proper to hear the opinions of their directors who they’ve hired to oversee that program. Yet, I think there were some people on the board, that just felt that I would interfere with what they wanted to have happen. So once the decision was made we were given directions as the BCA staff not to tell anyone about the board’s decision. This was supposed to be hush-hush, as long as the BCA could keep it hush-hush. They were worried the leagues would find out about it. It could cause controversy and they didn’t want to see any of that happen. Surprisingly, this is something that nobody has printed or published, our staff was honoring that. A week after the board’s decision to hire a broker, last September, they had an annual referees committee meeting in Colorado Springs and the Executive Director announced at that meeting, to the referees present, that the league program was for sale and that a broker had been hired. 9th Annual Tom Scott Memorial Libby, Montana By: Johnny Siefke, local player and participant
Libby once again welcomed a large number of out of towners here for a long weekend of pool. As it was time again for the Tom Scott Memorial Tournament, the tournament was held the weekend of March 20th and 21st at the VFW Post 1548 and the Mint Bar. Good caliber players from all over the northwest converged on Libby to do battle. The field of players came from Washington, Idaho, all across Montana, Canada saw many of their players cross the border for the weekend, and a good number of our local talent participated. 117 players in all. 82 men in the main event and 35 women. The men’s division saw the return of two past winners along with several others who have been in the money here before, as well as several new faces with a steady bridge and smooth stroke. The women’s division consisted of one former winner, a couple of runners-up, a lot of new faces and several very capable shooters. The cue stick wars began Friday evening at the VFW as several mini tourneys got underway, every time we had sixteen players sign-up we started a tournament, jackpot style, five dollar entry winner take all. 4 Men’s Minis and 1 Women’s Paul Ward – Post Falls, ID; Joe Horner – Post Falls, ID; T R Olson – Chinook, MT; Jim Allen – Ronan, MT; Sheila Moss – Kalispell, MT With all five afore mentioned collecting $80 for their efforts. Saturday morning saw many a tired eye and mine definitely looked like some sort of an atlas road map. We got the early flights started about 10:30 am, it was a definite help having the Calcutta
Friday night. All play on Saturday was a race to four, double elimination contest, with ball-in-hand rules in effect for the duration. The late flights began having matches called prior to five pm. The final sixteen men and the final eight women from their respective brackets and divisions qualified for Sunday. Everyone who qualified for Sunday started fresh at ten am in a race to five double elimination contest. T R Olson becomes the first three time winner of the Tom Scott. He advanced to the rocking chair Sunday with wins over Joe Horner 5-2, Tony Etchechoury 5-2, T J Frank 5-2 and Come Plourde 5-1. T J Frank won his first two matches on Sunday beating Dennis Brown 5-3, Leo DeGuarda 5-1, before getting knocked to the losers bracket by T R. T J then defeated Kevin Iverson 5-3, Ron Renwick 5-3 and Come Plourde 5-1, to get a rematch with T R. T J jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the match, only to see T R tie the score at hillhill. All in all it was simply a great weekend of pool, we want to thank everyone who participated in the tournaments over the weekend. On The Road Again When I was ten years old, Dad decided it was time to start working to earn my daily bread. When I was first starting, I was more trouble than value but by the time I was fifteen it was full time when I wasn’t in school. As soon as I got my driving permit we no longer went job to job by bus. Dad wouldn’t drive from old Pat Sheehan problems when he drove for Bugs Moran. We traveled from Vancouver BC to Redding California, the coast into Idaho and I couldn’t wait for the next trip. After ten years I got tired of the long trips. The twenty-four hour days on my feet and the retail store was demanding more and more of my time but now, 56 years later I am back on the road again. The “From The Work Bench” has pulled up jobs from all over, from Ashland, Oregon to Ocean Shores, Washington. As I write this story, my right hand man Aaron Curte is behind the wheel and I am writing as we head to Centralia to get the tables at McMenamin’s “Oly Club”. The Club is sponsoring a major tournament and we needed to make the seven old Brunswick Monroe tables play somewhat alike. When we started working on the tables a year ago, we found there were no two rails the same length or width. After 86 years of mistake after mistake we had to start from scratch. The factory had goofed on the length of the rails. The tables were made in 1918 so we can’t go back on warranty. The end rails on all the tables were at least ¼” short. The side rails were all different lengths and since they were wrong the caps were broken. The setting strips were replaced with Fir and all different widths and were done in pieces. To top it off they used K66 style rubber and Brunswick always used K55 profile or Super Speed. See the diagram below for correct sizes on tables with #6 pockets.
The strange thing was I picked up another Monroe table to restore with broken rail caps, sure enough the end rails were ¼” short, side rails 1/8” short. The guy at the factory either had a bad ruler or was on the sauce. The bolt holes I never could figure out. You would think that the factory would have had a template to lay out the slate and rails to match, but there was always up to 3/8” plus or minus on each rail, so we made the rails with slots for the bolts. Surprise! The holes in the slate were also at different heights. Well, here I am finishing the article while the practice games are going on. I am rooting for Aaron Curte another Man of the Cloth. So far only a few questions from the players. A few pockets that spit the balls out and the magic cue balls that draw so well. Sarge noticed that the object balls were 15%-20% too small and the cue balls were smaller than 2 1/8” diameter. We brought new balls that will be put out for the tournament. In a future article we will talk about what happens to the balls. OTB

SPOKANE, WA – On the weekend of March 13th and 14th McQ’s Billiards held it’s annual Johnnie Braswell Memorial 30 mile radius 9-ball tournament. John was a good friend to all of us and he will always be remembered in our hearts. When the clock struck 10 there were 34 of the best players Spokane had to offer all angling and aiming for the top prize. Handicaps were given out just to spice things up a bit. “A” players raced to 7. “B” players raced to 6. “C” players raced to 5. And “D” players raced to 4. The entire field broke down like this: The “A” group 8 players, the “B” group 16 players, the “C” group 8 players, the “D” group 2 players. The players seemed to respond well to the handicaps that made things tougher, but the cream still rose to the top. The “A” players claimed 6 of the 8 top spots. Terry Rohrman shook off a lot of dust and walked away with the top prize after defeating T J Frank in the second set of the finals. SPOKANE, WA After 27 weeks of Sunday and Monday night league our BCA in house comes to a close. Teams were crowned Champions, individuals were rewarded and others hope for the BIG prize at the end of the BCA rainbow. In our Sunday division “Not Those Guy’s” captained by John Marshall edged out Brian Kvasnicka’s team “No Mercy” by 3.5 rounds. John’s team took home $1975 and will represent McQ’s in Vegas. Chuck Hood, Jeff Karger, Carl Tibbetts, Bob Riddell and Mike Hibbler will round out the rest of John’s team. Top shooter on Sunday went to Clay Skidmore. Clay won 75% of his games with a 75-25 record. Bob Riddell finished 2nd with a 79-29 record and a 73.15%. Our Monday night division went to Ken Fried’s team “Them Again”. “Them Again” beat out Clay Skidmore’s team, “Rack Attack” by 2.5 rounds. Ken along with teammates Kathy Murphy, Mike Murphy, John Fried and Lonnie Widner chose not to go to Vegas and will enjoy their $1975 in Spokane. But our 2nd place team captained by Clay Skidmore is going to compete in Vegas. Going along with Clay will be Scott Schierman, Harold Prine, Bob (Deacon) Pike and Wes Bledsoe. For many of these players it will be their first time in the national spotlight and they are very excited and anxious to go. Top shooter on Monday night went to Ken Fried. Ken won 73.96% of his games, finishing with a 71-25 record. Scott Schierman finished 2nd with a 73-31 record and a 70.19%. Thanks again to all my players, good luck to all of you and I hope to see you in Vegas.

On April 17 and 18, City Lights Billiards in Tacoma, WA held a Qualifier tournament for the Preliminary Round of the US Amateur Championship to be held at the Cue Ball in Salem, OR September 18-19. The US Amateur Championship was inaugurated in 1994 by the American Poolplayers Association (APA) and entry is open to anyone that is not of professional poolplayer status. This is a prestige Tournament with no money at stake.

Tournament Format offers two separate divisions for Men and Women. Race to 7, combination of 8-Ball and 9-Ball, 5 games of 8-Ball, 8 games of 9-Ball, double elimination, 4 ½ x 9 tables, APA and Pro Rules apply. Finals Match: Race to 11, 8 games of 8-Ball, 13 games of 9-Ball, single elimination. With only a $5 entry and no green fees for the two days, this gave the 30 Mens Division and 6 Womens Division participants a chance to compete against some of the best amateur poolplayers in the area. At the end of Day 1, Ken Morano (Des Moines, WA) and Michelle Barkdoll (Tacoma, WA) were the victors in the Winners Brackets. Clark Smith (University Place) worked his way through the Place Bracket to defeat Minh Le (Tacoma, WA) 7-3 and advance to the Finals Match. Ken Morano won the lag and elected 8-Ball to start the set. After 8 games of 8-Ball, the score was 4-4; however, then switching to 9-Ball Clark took a commanding lead of 7-4, 7-5, then 10-5. Notwithstanding, Ken won the next 4 games making the score 10-9. With ball-in-hand, Clark caromed the cue ball off the 4 to pocket the 9 ball and wins the match. In the Ladies Division, Brenda Clark (Lakewood, WA) defeated D’ette Day (Spanaway, WA) 7-5 to advance to the Finals Match. Brenda won the lag and opted 8-Ball to start. Subsequent to 8 games of 8-Ball, Michelle was in the lead 6-2. Finishing out with 9-Ball the final score was 11-5 after the 9 ball was pocketed early for Michelle to win the match. The winners of each Division won entry and lodging to the Preliminary Round. With so many entries in the Mens Division, CLB decided to pay the entry fee for the runner-up also. The winner of each Division at the US Amateur Championship receives paid travel, lodging and entry into a 2005 pro event. In addition to advancing to a pro event, one Champion lady and one Champion gentleman will each receive a magnificent marble and bronze trophy and event jacket. Both Champions receive a one year free APA Membership and are also invited to return to the Championship Round the following year to defend their titles. The Championship Round will take place the weekend of November 5-7, 2004 at Ultimate Billiards in Berlin, CT. There was a relatively new player in the HOT Seat for this monthly One Pocket battle. Jim Fabionar had wins over great players like Tony Chohan and Chris McDonald, before finally meeting Rafael Martinez in the FINALS. Mr. Fabionar was playing very good, limiting mistakes and playing great defense. The offensive aspect of his game was almost perfect. Ducking when necessary and making the shots that counted and cruising to the Hot Seat, undefeated. Rafael had to win twice over Mr. Fabionar to take the top prize. Earlier, Rafael ran into a HOT Tony Chohan. Tony was making shots from everywhere on the table. Back Cuts with spin and shape. Low percentage shots that most normal humans would pass up. Tony won and then ran into Mr. Fabionar in the finals of the Winners bracket. In the finals of the Double Elimination, Rafael took the two races of the best of 3 games of One Pocket. Rafael stepped up to the table with all his one-pocket skills ready to be tested. Mr. Rafael won the first race 2-0. Jim Fabionar played 4 really good games, making balls and playing jam up safes. Jim also was able to get out of some of the great safes that Mr. Martinez was executing. All of these great efforts by Mr. Fabionar were futile against the magic shooting of Rafael. In the End it was 2-0 and 2-0 Mr. Martinez. Winning races to 6 with the closest player only getting 4 games. The Finals of the Winners bracket looked to be the most entertaining of the Winners side. Billy and Tony Chohan were matched up in what looked to be a grudge match. Tony won the lag and the battle was on. Mr. Chohan stepped up to the table and opened with two quick runs and was up 2-0. On the 3rd rack, Tony came up empty and Billy came to the table. Four racks later it was 4-2 and Tony Chohan was still in the match, but Billy had took a commanding lead. Swapping the next two racks put Billy on the hill and coming to the table ahead 5-3 and looking at a wide-open table. Final Billy Palmer 6, Tony Chohan 3. Tony Chohan and Rafael Martinez were the final contestants for the Oneloss bracket. Tony once again opened with a two-pack. But, Rafael Martinez had other plans for this match. Rafael had started playing quicker. Almost running around the table, Mr. Martinez made ball after ball and ended up winning the match 6-4. The Finals paired up Billy and Rafael. In true Double Elimination, Rafael had to defeat Billy twice to claim the $455 top prize. Rafael won the lag and opened up with a 3-pack. The 4th rack was all Rafael until a tough shot on the 9 ball into the side pocket missed and left Billy his first shot in 4 games. (Hard Times continued on page 29)

LEWISTON, ID What a weekend for 9-Ball! The McDermott Tour Stop at Shooters was the place to be April 3 and 4th. Friday night mini tournaments kicked off at 7pm as the tournament directors registered players for the weekend event. 46 players battled for the limelight in the 64-man field and the $1500 that Shooters’ added. Among the field were 25 of our own local players whom we wish to thank for continually supporting our events. Shooters put themselves back on the tournament map since designing their new facility for league and tournament play. After the players meeting early Saturday morning, tournament play kicked off promptly at 10am whittling down to 16 players by 8:30pm. The event played on 7 locally sponsored tables, each covered with new Championship cloth and sporting brand new balls. The tables were opened and red circle cue balls were used. One tournament highlight was JD sending Stan Tourangeau to the losers bracket with a 9-4 victory. Justice was served Sunday in the finals when (Shooters continued on page 24)

Now, I wasn’t present at that meeting, but when I came back in the office a couple of days later and found out that was announced, I’m like, “Holy Cow! Those guys will spread it everywhere.” Over the next few weeks I started getting calls from some of the larger league operators and others within the system. They were giving me very pointed questions. The kind of questions that I didn’t feel that could aptly be spun off to a broker to answer. They wanted to hear straight from the source. Once I told them, I started picking up a lot of irritation from the league operators finding out about this. Again, many of them found out from the referees meeting. Over time, they pretty much sold me on the concept that this was a decision that was not going to work on practical terms for the BCA Board of Directors. I started working towards a new association after a while. I got offers to help them out if the association got off the ground. I was kind of in a Catch 22. I had loyalty towards my employer, BCA, but I also had loyalty towards the membership that I oversee. It’s very obvious to me that the Board of Directors did not work in a responsible manner towards their membership. I got caught in between dual loyalties. Loyalty to the BCA Board of Directors and loyalty to the BCA membership that I felt responsible for. As far as I’m concerned both of them paid my paycheck. Mark Griffin about a little over a month ago offered me the job to oversee the new for-profit league system he was planning on buying. It’s going to start up June 1st and I told him that I would not work for him or anyone else in a for-profit league system. That’s not what this whole system is about. I don’t think it will work as well under a for-profit owner whether it’s John Lewis or Don “the Cheese man” or Mark Griffin. I have no problems with Mark Griffin. I’m sure he’s well intentioned. He’s a nice enough guy. He knows the players very well but that’s not what he is about. I think at that point I became the enemy. Of course, he told the board that I was not cooperating. Interestingly enough, the board, without conferring with me, had put in the bid that I was the key employee in this whole thing. I felt that the BCA board and Mark Griffin became angry with me when I wasn’t going to go along with the policy. Again, without conferring with me, they announced this many months ago in their advertisements to future players. D”C”A: Mentioning Mark Griffin, I had heard that you are not allowed to be down at the BCA Nationals and somebody had put a restraining order on you, not to be able to be in the playing area? JL: I’m not aware that there is an actual physical restraining order. I will respect whatever the board decides. The BCA stated today that I will not be allowed in the tournament area.
D”C”A: Is there a meeting scheduled with everybody, the Friday before the BCA Nationals starts - at the Hilton? JL: A meeting of league operators? During the tournament? D”C”A: Yes JL: That hasn’t been finalized yet, and there will be some league operators meetings and it will be open to the press. They’ll be an announcement when it’s finalized. It’ll be off premise. We don’t want to interrupt the tournament in any way. We certainly want to see that the tournament, because it is the final BCA National 8-Ball Championship, end in a fitting way. We want it to be as successful as its ever been. D”C”A: I also heard that the ACS will be holding a National tournament starting next year. JL: Yes D”C”A: In 2005, in May? JL: I would like to announce that by June 1st for both the 8-Ball and 9-Ball Championships. I imagine that Mark Griffin will be announcing the same thing. D”C”A: At the same time? JL: No, I don’t think we would want to go heads-up with each other. I don’t think that would be good for the players. D”C”A: Did the Riviera put an ultimatum to Mark Griffin, “either you get the number of players or it’s going to cost you to reserve that time”? JL: I imagine the performance clause in the contract would show that because the BCA has a contract with the Riviera for one more year. The BCA also has Gary Benson under contract to provide the equipment until 2005. I would imagine that it would be on the Mark Griffin part of the bid, that he honor these contracts. It could come back to the BCA to make sure that these performance clauses are made. They may be the ones financially liable. I’m not sure if Mark Griffin would be financially liable or BCA. The contracts are with BCA so I would imagine that even though Mark Griffin owns the league company, it could still be the BCA that is liable for the performance. I don’t want to get away from what I should speak properly. One of the two parties is going to be liable for it under the performance clause, at the Riviera if it happens. D”C”A: I know a lot of players like going to Vegas. They like being there, the atmosphere, what’s not to like about Vegas? Plus you get to play a lot of pool and see a lot of people. Now the BCA had their pro event there also, is something in the works for the ACS being able to create something in that respect? JL: No. The BCA Open 9-Ball Championship is a strong financial liability to (ACS continued on page 25)

Up River Pair Wins Oak Harbor Partners 8-Ball from: Chuck Hassler
March 27-28, 2004 Jim Davenport and Dana Aldrich from Upper Skagit Valley went undefeated against a very strong 19 team field in the Oak Harbor Partners 8-Ball Tournament. They beat Mike Baird (Bothell) and Dave Bersenadze (Lynnwood/Republic of Georgia) for the championship (7-5) and $655. Mike and Dave got $490 for second. Third went to the local Oak Harbor team of Dee Deguzman and Lloyd Napouk collecting $420. The Canadian team of Brent Babcock and Chris Rezka from Abbotsford took fourth and $160.

When we thought we had seen it all on the WPA Artistic Pool Tour, once again the seemingly impossible happened at the Master’s Artistic Pool Championship at the Hopkins Expo in Valley Forge, PA on 3/25/04 – 3/28/ 04. Luke “Lucky Luke” Szywala of Poland, who the weekend before was nosed out by Andy “The Magic Man” Segal’s amazing last shot in the Northeastern Artistic Pool Championship, seemed to post a winning score of 202 that was too hard to overcome in the final round. Mr. Szywala also known as “Cool Hand Luke” scored an incredible 9 shots in a row in the two final disciplines of Jump and Masse Shots. That enabled him to pass the Italian Champion, European Champion, and 2003 U.S. Open Champion Stefano “The Master” Pelinga, who incredibly the night before stunned the Artistic Pool World by breaking the World Record for Masse Shots held by Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman. Mr. Pelinga hit all 5 Masse shots as Mr. Rossman had done the year before in the 2003 WPA World Artistic Pool Championship in Kiev, Ukraine. Mr. Rossman scored 42 out of a possible 47, while Mr. Pelinga hit 44 because he hit more first and second attempts. Each player gets three attempts at each shot and one point is reduced for each attempt. The stage was now set for the 30 second “miracle”. Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman had to pull off another Masse miracle to win the Championship. Dr. Cue had been closing the gap in the last two rounds by hitting at one point seven shots in a row. Now Mr. Rossman stepped up for three attempts at the Francois Minguad Masse Shot, which is the final and most difficult shot in the 40 shot program. The cue ball must curve around a cube of chalk that is placed on the table and then travel down the side rail the length of the table to pocket an object ball hanging in the far corner. Dr. Cue on his first attempt missed the shot by about 18 inches. Now Rossman approached his second attempt, which he needed to make to win the tournament. The reason is that the second attempt at that final shot would give him a total of 203 points to Luke Szywala’s 202. Mr. Rossman missed the shot by less than an inch and 30 seconds later hit his third attempt and posted an identical score of 202 with Mr. Szywala. Unfortunately the tiebreaker rule went in favor of Luke Szywala, as he had executed 17 first attempts in the 40 shot program to Mr. Rossman’s 16 first attempts. The 2003-04 Eight Ball League Season came to an end on Saturday March 20th at the Keg N Cue in Monroe, Washington. We had another record year finishing with 28 teams and over 190 players in the league. We had participation from 12 different taverns in the area to include 2 teams from Duvall Tavern in King County. This season we had the pleasure of bringing on two sponsors: Sound Beverage of Snohomish County and Sahara Pizza of Monroe. Each tavern offered $1.50 MGD or Fosters beer specials on Thursday nights. Sahara Pizza offered a $5 coupon for each Eight Ball Break and one coupon for each team that scored a 15-1 or better win against the other team. They paid out over 60 coupons! The format was a four person Round Robin with a total of 16 games played each night. BCA Modified 8 Rules. Each team was also allowed to rotate substitute players in at any time. Play started at 7:30 each night and usually ended by 10:30 each night. Teams usually did not travel more than 10 miles to play against opponents, thus we had to implement 3 different divisions with 10 teams in each. Each division played for 18 weeks to determine the top 4 teams that would advance to the playoffs. The top 12 teams then played against a team from another division in the first round of the single elimination playoffs. Each team that made it to the finals received a trophy from Snohomish County Awards Trophies and Awards in Monroe. Sound Beverage picked up the tab for the trophies as our lead sponsor. On March 27th, we had the ceremony at the Keg N Cue in Monroe. The league gave out over $8,200 to all 28 teams based on the number of wins that they had in the season and bonus money to the Top 12. We also had a raffle for two new Joss pool sticks ( retail $280 and $380 ) given to the league by Brent Kirschenmann at cost. The proceeds from the raffle raised over $550 for the local Boys & Girls Clubs in Snohomish, Monroe and Sultan!!! The money was used to purchase new billiard equipment for each facility. Special thanks to my division representatives: Lin Theriault ( who runs a great eight ball tournament on Monday nights at Jakes Old Inn in Snohomish BTW ), Jackie Tomlinson of Sultan ( who took high woman in her division with a whopping 75% ), Mike Shotwell ( the nicest guy who didn’t even play this year), Randy Koch ( blatantly stolen from the Bellevue East Side Pool League ) who did all the stats and held the money, and Ron Clarijs of Amsterdam for writing the software to run all the league’s internal reports and accounting. Colorado Springs, CO - According to Billiard Congress of America (BCA) President John Stransky, “The Billiard Congress of America couldn’t be more optimistic about the recent transfer of ownership for the BCA League System. Mark Griffin is the new owner, and he has the players’ and league operators’ interests first and foremost in his mind and in his plans.” The transfer of ownership will occur on June 1, 2004. May 14-22, 2004, Mr. Griffin will take part in the BCA National 8-Ball Championships and will be meeting with players, league operators, BCA State Association officials, referees and vendors, both formally and informally (his daily schedule will be posted at the BCA check-in desk). While none of the league policies, procedures or fees will change, Mr. Griffin has many plans to improve the BCA League System and is open to ideas to increase player participation and satisfaction. BCA Executive Director Stephen Ducoff said, “The Billiard Congress of America staff from Colorado Springs will be checking in players, distributing player gift bags, handling roster changes and, most importantly, paying out an expected $800,000 in prize money. any group that takes that on, including the BCA Trade Association. D”C”A: Are they going to keep that together? JL: Well, I don’t know. They were sent a lot of warning letters that I saw from some league operators that were forming the association months ago, stating that “you’re going to have a tough time seating spectators for your pro 9-Ball event if you only have 500 players for the 8-Ball Championships – if you’re depending on that group to fill up your seats for the 9-Ball”. My impressions from those letters was that the BCA board was duly warned. Yet the BCA board still decided to go forward with the sale. They were bound and determined to do so. When I talked with Mark Griffin over a month ago and he offered me the job, he explained to me that he was aware he was the only bidder on the table. There were no other bidders. Now that’s not what the BCA had said. I understand in their recent press releases today that they’re not being entirely truthful there. I think that’s kind of “spinning”. D”C”A: I believe Mr Griffin was not in on the vote to sell the leagues, being a board member, he excused himself because of conflict of interest. JL: Absolutely. Mark had made it clear early on in the process that he would be interested in the sale. There was another board member that stated the same, both themselves and Rene Pohlman, from the APA, would excuse themselves from those discussions. I believe the BCA board handled that in a proper manner. D”C”A: My question is should he not have resigned from the board in order to buy the league. It seems to be improper to me and others that I have talked about this with. It seems like it would be in the same respect as on Wall Street being “insider trading”? JL: I’m not aware if Mark is on the board right now. He may have resigned. If he hasn’t resigned I could see that that’s a perception that people have, that it’s improper. He may have resigned for all I know. I would say that to have a contract like that with the Board of Directors and to continue on that board is a conflict. I think as long as he asked to be excused on the voting, discussions and board meetings prior to the sale, I don’t think it was improper. I don’t think it’s proper to ask anyone to resign just because you’re bidding. Once you win the bid, that is a different situation. I do know the BCA is going all out to support Mark Griffin on his new league company. A couple of thing that I need to stress to your readers is that if people long for the BCA league system, as they are used to having it prior to June 1st, 2004, they want to continue with that then they want to go with the ACS. The ACS is exactly what the BCA league system was and they are used to with one exception: it will now have an elected Board of Directors from their membership that’s made up of their peers as opposed to a trade association board that had little in common with what their membership was about. The other organization that’s now going to be formed that’s called BCA Pool League is in fact further away from the BCA league system than the ACS is by far. It’s a company, a for-profit entity, and it’s run by a national owner-operator. One of the reasons the ACS came into effect is because so many leagues communicated among themselves that there is no way they would sanction under a for-profit body because they were already used to sanctioning under a non-profit, under the BCA, and they wanted to continue doing that. D”C”A: I also read somewhere that Mark Griffin would have to change the name from BCA. JL: Three years, is our understanding, is part of the deal. The BCA Trade Association and Mark Griffin want to have BCA in the name so it’s misleading to people, so that people can still think that they are being part of the BCA league system. D”C”A: Is there anything else that you’d like to add or tell the players? JL: Well, the one thing is that this is now an opportunity. What came out of this whole board decision is a real positive in this whole thing. There is now, independent league operators and players going to have the opportunity to be in charge and self-govern their own national association, something that they haven’t had the opportunity for decades because everyone looked to the BCA Trade Association to do this. If they’re to go under the BCA pool league owned by Mark Griffin, they’re going to lose that opportunity to selfgovern themselves and the ACS is all about encouraging the league operators and players to take advantage of this opportunity. D”C”A: Are the rules going to be the same? JL: Absolutely. We follow the world standardized rules. They’re published by the World Pool Billiards Association (WPA). The ACS will follow those rules word for word as written down by the WPA just like the BCA does. And we have permission from the WPA directly to do so. I researched this when I was at the board meeting with WPA a month ago to insure that we would be allowed to use WPA rules. So, being the Secretary/Treasurer of the World body, I’m able to find the answers out very quickly. D”C”A: John, I would like to thank you for taking the time to speak to me today. We appreciate you giving our readers the opportunity to know the ACS’s point of view. JL: Thank you for the interview. I hope to see you in Vegas.

The Pechauer West Coast Tour held its 11th stop of the season at Sunset Family Billiards in Renton, WA, the weekend of April 17th and 18th. Sunset Family Billiards features 12 Gold Crown IV’s with Simonis felt, as well as two coin-op tables. They serve snacks and pop in a non-smoking, all-ages environment. 58 players showed up from around the Northwest coming from as far as Bend, Or and Vancouver, British Columbia. Play started Saturday morning with a race to 9 on the winner’s side and a race to 7 on the loser’s. Pechauer points contenders Glenn Atwell, Steve Lingelbach and Paul Potier were looking to keep pace with Dave Hemmah of California who had taken the lead in the point’s race at Hard Times. Other top notch competitors included Dan Louie, Rich Geiler, and John Horsfall. Up and coming players Bryce Avila, Woody Nielsen, Simon Pickering, Brett Seyler, and Dillon Standley also came to take their shot at the $1,100 first place prize. Woody Neilson might have had the toughest time of it! After losing to Rich Geiler in the first round he posted wins over Bryce Avila 7-5 and Randy Camantigue 7-5 and many others. On Sunday had a tough, come-frombehind 4-8 to win 9-8 over Loy Long, to go all the way to 7th place before losing to Raul Abenojar 6-9. The winner’s matches on Sunday am brought back some familiar faces with Glenn Atwell facing John Horsfall and Dan Louie squaring off against Rich Geiler. Atwell steam-rolled Horsfall 9-3; while Louie let Geiler off the hook 9-8 after he missed a tough shot on the 9-ball that he seemed to talk himself out of. (Horsfall continued on page 31)

happenings at The New Grove The New Grove recently held it’s 9-Ball Qualifying Championship Tournament with over $500 in cash and prizes. The tournament had some big names like Iverson, Anderson, Cisco, Dooley and Chandler, just to name a few. The New Grove went all out for this one, a free food buffet was offered to all the pool players and lots of door prizes were given out too. The tournament started fast and hard with the more experienced players ending their game with a lot of 9-Ball combos after the break. Then when the more experienced players played each other, the more skillful the games became. There were some really good matches all through the night. The New Grove and staff would like to congratulate John (J D) Doherty for being top point getter in the qualifying weeks. Way to go J D! He won a matching watch and pen set. The Sarge Comes Back By: Dennis Winsor
I pull into The New Grove parking lot, that’s strange there’s nowhere to park but in the back. I walk in thinking there must be a lot of people playing Texas Hold’em because The New Grove has the best action in town. But to my surprise, the room was filled with pool players and younger kids with their parents. Then Ken “Sarge” Aylesworth started his show, trick shot after trick shot, with lots of oooh’s and aaah’s. Ken Sarge The show ended and the Aylesworth master showman stayed an extra hour to sign autographs and play a little pool. He even gave a few lessons to the boys. Bristol Bob was in the drivers seat when the final match began. It was a race to nine and Bob took the first game but Josh retaliated by winning the next five games. The two traded wins back and forth until it was hill-hill. Diagram 2 is position from nine ball. With no good shot at the one ball, what is the best — and easiest! — safety play? Come off the right side of the one ball to hit about at A and then settle at B. In the mean time, the one ball will be coming off the cushion at C and going about as far as D. Now your opponent must hit the one or give up an easy combo on the nine ball. Illustrated here is yet another delicious secret about half-ball shots. If you play a half-ball follow shot, the object ball will go very nearly as far as the cue ball. That means if you can get the cue ball onto the cushion as shown, the object ball will be close to D. Unfortunately, this part of the shot does require precision; if you hit the object ball fuller than half ball, it will travel farther than the cue ball, and less for a thin hit. Once again, I’m going to break into my familiar refrain: you must practice the ideas here before you need them in a game. I’ve spent hours just on Diagram 1, so I think you can devote at least 30 minutes to it. POST FALLS, ID On March 20 th we held a class “C” 8-ball tournament at The Falls. With the small amount of players that we had, we were able to get things wrapped up in one day. Before getting into the tournament standings, I wanted to touch base with a subject that always gets brought up. “How do you know if someone is eligible for a tournament?” This question can be difficult in some cases to answer. I have to rely on what I know about him/her, what others say about him/her, what him/her tells me about their game, and use my own judgment on the situation. More often than not, someone does not agree with my decision, but I’ve learned that in the world of pool you cannot make everyone happy. This does not mean however that I am right all the time. In this tournament, I did have a player that did not belong in a “C” tournament. I did not know this person, and had he been truthful with me about his previous winnings, he would have not been let in the tournament. I was not told of his past winnings or who he even was until the finals, and by that time it was much too late to do anything about it. I apologize for the situation and ask that if you know something about a player that I do not, please tell me before it’s too late so I can prevent this from happening. Our third place finisher, John Joplin started out

Class C 8-Ball Tournament with a bang defeating Bob Sharp 5-3, Larry Clifford 5-2, Mark East 5-1, and Pete Sebala 5-3 before losing to Juan Guajardo 5-0. Joplin then played Bill Jackson and lost 3-0 landing him an honorable third place win. Bill Jackson, our second place winner lost his first match to Ric Schaaf 5-3 putting him in the losers side. He then went on to defeat Doug Burnett 3-1, Ryan Clary 3-0, Dale Ferrell 3-2, Pete Sebala 3-2, Terry Thurlow 3-2 and John Joplin 3-0 before his final loss against Juan Guajardo 5-2. Our tournament winner Juan Guajardo took home his very first win in a big tournament this weekend by tearing through the winners side and never looking back. His first victim was Dale Ferrell, whom he beat 5-3, then Chris Kuest 5-3, Ryan Clary 5-3, Casey Sawyer 5-3, John Joplin 5-0 and finally Bill Jackson 5-2 to take home the glory. Great job everyone! Hard Times Tournament Results Billy made the 9 and continued to win the next two games matching Rafael’s score 3-3. The next 4 racks were split 2-2 with Rafael breaking on the 11th rack. As luck would have it, Rafael would make the 9 on the snap to win the first match 6-5. The final race was to 4. Once again Rafael opened strong, putting a 3 pack on Billy. In the fourth game, Rafael had come up dry on the break. Billy ran out making it 3-1. The next 2 games Billy had chances for run outs, but played conservatively and won each. In the blue tier (SL 2-3), it was Jim Yorke (SL 3) of Brampton, Ont., Canada defeating Tim Lancaster (SL 3) of Brandon, Miss., 2-0. In the yellow tier (SL 4&5), Kevin Belknap (SL 5) of Sherwood, Ark., defeated Corey Avallone (SL 5) of Valley Cottage, N.Y., 4-3. In the purple tier (SL 6-7), David Weaver (SL 7) of Broken Arrow, Okla., defeated Ricky Seak (SL 6) of Bridgeport, Conn., 5-1. Each champion received a prize package worth $15,000 in cash and prizes.

Atwell rode the wave all the way to the end of the winner’s bracket after he beat Geiler 9-6 in the hot seat. His travels included wins over Don Widen 9-4, Peter Dimmick 9-5, Simon Pickering 9-4, Loy Long 9-6, John Horsfall 9-3, and Rich Geiler 9-6. In the fashion of some down-home square dancing Horsfall faced Louie in the loser’s bracket taking the match 9-8, and then faced Geiler for a chance at the finals. Horsfall once again pulled off the match winning by a slim margin at 9-7. Horsfall’s road to the finals included wins over Martin Tarvydas 9-2, Ed Hobbs 9-1, Dillon Standley 9-0, Raul Abenojar 9-6 before losing to Atwell 3-9, then continued with wins over Paul Potier 9-2, Dan Louie 9-8, and Rich Geiler 9-7 which set up a rematch with Atwell. The first game of the finals was a safety battle until Atwell got a look at the 1-ball and ran out. Atwell scratched playing a safety in game two and Horsfall took control. The next time Atwell got a good look at anything the score was 7-1 favoring Horsfall. It looked as though Horsfall was unstoppable until he scratched in game 9 and left Atwell a 3 ball out. Atwell took game ten for a score of 7-3, but in game 11 Atwell came up dry on the break and Horsfall ran out, who then broke and ran to make the score 9-3. Just when the crowd thought Horsfall was going to shut the door, he scratched on the break in game 13. If 13 was unlucky for Horsfall, it was lucky for Atwell who took full advantage of the opportunity. Atwell proceeded to put on a pool clinic demonstrating great play and determination to win making one tough shot after another to stay alive. The next time Horsfall got a good look at anything, the score was tied at nine. They traded games for a ten-ten tie. In game 21, Atwell missed the 5 giving Horsfall the opportunity to show why he is considered a champion! He ran out, and broke and ran to get to the hill. In the final game, a
safety battle ensued with Horsfall coming out on top to earn the $1,100 first place prize and spot in the Reno Open at the On The Wire Billiard Promotions thanks room owners Rick Blackorby and Sean Finney for hosting the stop. Their support throughout the weekend was tremendous being available to take care of tournament staff, players and spectators at every turn. The players were incredibly professional helping the tournament run smooth.
