Dear Editor, First let me say that I enjoy your monthly newspaper immensley. I even enjoy reading the advertisements. My job has me traveling around the country and I enjoy dropping in on new pool halls. Butte doesn’t have any and I really love to play on the 9' pool tables as well as the 12' snooker tables. Having said that I would like to comment on one item that seems to be missing from a large number of stories I read in On The Break. A recent example is the story about the WBCA Regional 8-Ball Championships. Where would I find Lincoln City? Let’s see, Abe Lincoln was born in Kentucky, but sometimes Illinois claims him. Hmmm...they aren’t in the West, though. Now it just so happens I have stayed in Lincoln City, so I know where it is, but I doubt everyone outside of Oregon knows. Keep up the good work. The rest of the stories are informative and worth reading. I especially like the columns by various people. Speaking of that, you should do an article on Samm Diep’s Thanksgiving dinner - I hear she feeds several hundreds of people. What What A A Show Show One One Pocket Pocket at at its its Best Best

Grady Mathews in Lakewood, Washington At Full Splice Billiards Grady’s exhibition was phenomenal. The day started with an exhibition match between Grady and Harry Platis playing one pocket. I am very grateful to Harry for taking time out of his crowded schedule to travel to Lakewood, WA to play Grady this exhibition match. Harry and Grady played a race to three, and during each game they gave everyone present a break down of their intent and their strategy shot for shot. Spectators could ask questions, and both of these gentlemen answered them in a very informative manner, which cleared up any misconceptions that some of the spectators may have had about the

strategy and concepts of the game of one pocket. The match went hill / hill with Grady finally winning the race. Everyone present learned a great deal about the game of one pocket from the perspective of these two great players. Next Grady went through his seminar on the history of pool with the assistance of his lovely wife Randi. This presentation consisted of a slide show which included photographs of famous players and tournaments. Many of these photographs were from Grady’s personal collection, and they covered a time span from the 60’s to date. Grady’s commentary was excellent, and it was truly amazing how vivid and clear his memories of these events were, and how entertaining this gentleman truly is. Grady’s knowledge of history of pool is a very important link to past, and hopefully he will be around for many more years to share it. Upon completion of Grady’s seminar, Grady went through a shot demonstration with audience participation. These were not your typical set up shots, the shots chosen by Grady required many factors to be successful which he was. Grady’s performance was truly excellent, his cue ball control / speed control were truly phenomenal. Upon completion of the shot making / position play segment of his seminar, Grady signed autographs and played pool with the spectators, and no one was left out. I would recommend Grady’s Presentation / seminar to anyone, and especially to other Pool Room owners. Everyone present was truly impressed with the entire presentation, and the professional manner in which Grady presented it. I personally can not wait until next year to have Grady and his Lovely wife Randi come back again!!!!! I would also again like to extend a special thanks to Harry Platis for coming down to Lakewood, Washington for this event, his participation greatly added to the overall success of the day!!!!

On April 14 & 15, 2007 nine teams from the Tacoma and Federal way Traveling 8 Ball Divisions competed for the Western Washington 2007 BCA Team Championship IV Title. This event was sponsored and hosted by The Q’z Family Restaurant and Sports Lounge in Graham, Washington, Miller Brewing Company, Coors Brewing Company and W. WA. BCA

Pool League. The Q’z owners, Ed and Nickii Tarape provided outstanding playing conditions with all new felts on the five tables used for this tournament and added additional $150.00 in prize money. With $880.00 total added prize money and promotional items like T-shirts, Ball Caps, Cup Holders and Key Rings every team that participated went home with something. The format was a race to the first 3 rounds won with 4 games in each round. The regular weekly player handicaps were used with the difference being credited at 1.5 the normal rate to the lower team per round. Many of the matches were decided between one or two balls at the end of the last round. The Full Splice Nuts team champions had a challenging two days of matches. One of their early matches tied with 2.5 rounds each, which is played off in a one game sudden death outcome to determine who would win that match. Their team prevailed and managed to stay undefeated all the way to take the title. Job well done! These team championship league tournaments are geared to level the playing field between the lower handicap team players and the seasoned veterans within our league. It provided great competition to all levels that participated. Many players commented on the good time they had and look forward to competing even stronger at the next event slated for November 2007. Chuckie Holyoke came through the B-side to double dip Scott Nelson and took first place in the March $1000.00 add B tourney in Longview, Washington. A full field of sixty-four good players fought hard for two days to see who could climb to the top of the winner’s circle. 14 year old Chuckie Holyoke accompanied by his biggest supporter, his dad Kent, showed that at an early age you can play quality pool. Chuckie did not have an easy walk through the tournament. His first match was a win over Ron Ok. Ron just won the BCA B Division at Chinook Winds. He then beat veteran player Scoot Chandler in a hill hill thriller. Chuckie lost the next set to Rennie Amadio to go to the B side where he went on to defeat Robert Ferrell, Minh Le and Larry Wayne to face Ron Ok again and take the win. This skill shot is one of the most talked about shots from ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic. I was stationed at Davis Monthan Air Force Base the first time I heard about this shot. It was in the mid 70’s. The way it was shown to me the set up looked wrong for this shot to have any chance of being made. I thought the shot was impossible. I didn’t pay any attention to the shot until I saw it again in Nick Varners book. It still looked wrong in the diagram, so I called Nick and asked him how the shot was executed. He told me and I realized that the cue ball and object ball had to be farther away from the rail. Well through trial and

error on my gold crown one, I finally figured the shot out. I would have to say I have well over 350 hours of practice and execution time during exhibitions in this one shot. This is my wife’s favorite shot. Let’s take a good look at this shot and give you some knowledge you may not have. This shot looks like it defies physics! This skill shot is a half masse. The set up for this shot is critical! You may put the cue ball and object ball F anywhere within the noted 1x1 square as shown in the diagram. The cue ball and F ball are frozen together. If they aren’t frozen together the shot WILL NOT work. I’m going to reveal where I put the cue ball for my set up. lightly into the cloth I freeze the object ball to the cue ball. The line of centers between the cue ball and object ball are pointed to the right of pocket F, at the long rail by pocket F. If you extended the line of centers through the rail it would point at about 3/4 to 1 diamond up from pocket F. Why is this aligned so far to the right? It is aligned so far to the right because you have the full length of the table in which the object ball will throw to the left before it gets to pocket F, (contact induced throw) caused by friction. The aiming area for the cue ball is shown in the diagram. Seeing this shot is a half masse the butt end of your cue is usually 45 degrees or less. Mine is usually less. You will be cueing the cue ball at about 2 o’clock for the masse affect to work on the cue ball. You don’t hit this shot with a lot of power. This shot

is usually performed with a moderate to medium hard stoke. The objective of the shot is to shoot the cue ball into F ball with a half masse. The cue ball will go around F ball as it travels down table toward pocket F. The cue ball will be made first in F pocket and the F ball will be made in the same pocket. You will need to make adjustments with aim and alignment of balls depending on where the object ball goes. I know some of you are laughing already. This is a great skill shot and I would like to comment that I think George Middleditch executed the shot better than anyone when he was giving exhibitions. You MUST get the OWNERS PERMISSION to try this shot on their tables. Good Luck and I hope you make the shot.

Ray Martin and the Ghost Ball San Francisco Billiard Academy

There are as many remedies [for aiming] as there are recipes for cooking. Some players divide the object ball into 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, etc. Others (who may be good with divining rods) measure in cue-tip widths. Others see imaginary “luminous spots.” Others (see below) picture an imaginary cue ball touching the object ball and the two pointing into the pocket (about as good an idea as any), and shoot the cue ball to fill this space. There is only one true solution: Start sinking balls! Set up ball after ball, in front of pocket after pocket, and — sink balls!

In 1977, there weren’t very many books available on how to play pool. Willie Mosconi’s “Winning Pocket Billiards” and Luther Lassiter’s “Modern Guide” and “Billiards for Everyone” were the most common, but not very complete. Books by Clive Cottingham and Edward Knuchell covered more territory but were harder to find. In that year, Ray Martin and Rosser Reeves brought out “The 99 Critical Shots in Pool.” The publisher Random House has just announced a 30th anniversary edition of the book with a new introduction by Ray Martin. The rest of the content of the book is unchanged, but if you don’t already have a copy Bob Jewett of this book, it should be among the first dozen books in your billiard library. One important concept that Reeves and Martin covered well — and perhaps first, so far as I can remember — is the ghost ball. The concept of the ghost ball is pretty simple: it is the position of the cue ball at the instant of the collision with the object ball. Using this concept may tax your powers of visualization. Can you imagine a white sphere where the cue ball should be sent? It may take practice. These days, the ghost ball concept is often associated with the corresponding aiming system, but that was not what Martin had in mind. In fact, about aiming systems he said:

Suddenly the eye and the brain begin to take over, and you begin to sink balls. So start! Sink balls! Sink balls! Sink balls! So, if Ray thought that the Ghost Ball system of aiming was pretty much worthless, why did he bring up the concept? To use on carom shots. Ray was mostly talking about 14.1 in his book and at that game (and at eight ball) you frequently run into tight clusters of balls with no obvious shot. Using the ghost ball technique can often show you an unmissable shot in a layout you thought was hopeless. Shot A in the diagram is a typical situation. The cut on the 3 ball looks impossible, and in fact it is more than 90 degrees, but if you hit the 1 ball first, the cue ball will hit the 3 ball nearly immediately. If you can imagine a ghost ball as in the expanded version of the shot at the bottom, you can predict very accurately where the 3 ball will go. As drawn, the balls are sitting just right for the 3 to go into the pocket. Continued........page 33

The Law of Attraction

I just finished the movie and the non-fiction book, The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne. If you’ve heard anything about it, then you know that it’s all about the Law of Attraction. Without giving away too much of the movie, the law of attraction is all about getting what you think about; using your thoughts and feelings to determine your destiny. Whatever you focus on will be attracted to you. Far fetched? Decide for yourself. But, you can’t deny that there’s much truth to this theory. Without getting too heavy on this topic, let’s think about how this applies to pool. We may not realize it, but we often create our lives by focusing on what we don’t want. For instance, “I hope I don’t scratch,” “I don’t want to lose my next match,” “I’m not a bad player,” and “I hope I don’t miss this shot.” Samm Diep These are all ways that we allow the things we don’t want to creep into our subconscious. Instead, choose the exact spot where you want the cue ball to end up and think, “I’ll make this shot and the cue ball will go there,” and visualize it happening. Say, “I will win my next match,” and believe it. Say, “I’m a spectacular pool player!” and be proud of it. Think, “make it, make it, make it,” with each warm up stroke and see the ball going into the pocket. Visualize everything that you want to happen, making the shot, beating your opponent, and winning the tournament. Attract the positive outcomes with your positive thoughts. Obviously, I can’t guarantee that just by doing this you will win more tournaments. However, I do believe that by adjusting the way we phrase our thoughts, not only in pool but also in life, we can proactively attract the things we want, not what we don’t want. A quote by Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, either way, you’re right.” Shifting the way we think and feel to the things that we want takes practice. It’s natural to want to complain about bad things that happened, the bad rolls we got, the bad luck we had. But, if we can focus on the positive things, we create them for ourselves. Our destiny lies in the future, not in the past. If we constantly dwell on the negative things from our past, then we inevitably recreate them. Remove “I can’t and “I’m not” from your vocabulary. Imagine yourself as a magnet that attracts things to you through the signals you emit, using your thoughts and feelings. Whether its money, relationships, health, or pool, be clear about what you want the ultimate outcome to be. Visualize it. Believe in it. And, make it happen for yourself. Focus on the things you want, not the things you don’t want. If you have yet to see the movie, watch it or read the book with an open mind. IPT Writes Blah ... Blah ... Blah

The IPT recently released a statement to the players that “The IPT is not over ...” wrote IPT founder Kevin Trudeau. He continued, “All players from the World Open will continue to be paid each month or every other month as cash flow allows. You will all be paid in full before the next IPT tournament.” This comes on the heels of a report aired by a Chicago based ABC-TV affiliate about the troubled IPT and its found Kevin Trudeau. Two IPT players appeared in the piece, Jeff Beckley and Rodney Morris, but Trudeau did not, instead Deno Andrews represented the IPT. No new information was forth coming and no dates for the 2007 or 2008 season have been proposed. Trudeau again reiterated that he will repay all money won at the World Open 8-Ball Championships and anyone who paid to qualify for the 2007 season but the question is when? Many players lives have been impacted by the actions of the IPT and their empty promises make things even worse. BACKSPIN Putting backspin in the cueball by hitting it below center makes possible some of the most beautiful shots in the game. While nonplayers may be intrigued to see a cueball back up after a collision in apparent defiance of the laws of physics, this shot is more than a curiosity for players. The player who can apply backspin, or draw the ball, with control has a powerful weapon on both offense and defense. That so many players can’t draw the ball even though they have been playing for years in one of the most lamentable aspects of the human condition. And yet the basic technique is not hard to learn. Advanced applications, of course, require a secure stroke, considerable practice and that thing called talent. In my experience as a teacher, students who can’t draw the ball are almost always not hitting the cueball low enough. They are afraid of golfing the ball - perhaps sending it off the table or ripping the cloth - but that seldom happens if the tip of the cue is shaped properly and well chalked. The second-most common error is shooting too softly. Low speed is okay if the cueball is a foot or less away from the object ball, but as the distance between the balls increases, so must the speed. The friction between the cueball and the cloth is constantly acting to reduce the backspin and convert it into natural roll. To learn how to hit the cueball low enough to get good draw action, use a striped ball as a cueball and orient the stripe horizontally (be sure that the stripe on the ball is no more than half a ball width for this exercise). BACKSPIN LIMIT In the diagram, note that the upper edge of the cue tip is contacting the lower edge of the stripe on a 9-ball - that’s how you get maximum backspin. Any lower and you’ll miscue, especially if the tip hits the cloth before the ball. Examine the 9-ball after shooting; the chalk mark made by the tip tells you if you hit the intended spot. When practicing, start with a short, straight-in shot and remember to get the cue out of the way of the returning cueball. In the drawing, the cue is not quite level, which is the case when the butt must clear a rail. A slightly elevated cue, in fact, makes the draw action livelier. The disadvantage is that unless you hit the cueball precisely in the center you have squirt and curve to contend with. That’s why most teachers advocate a level cue for draw shots. In addition, the more you elevate, the more awkward it is to stroke smoothly and the harder it is to judge speed. Except for certain tricks shots, a level cue will produce enough draw for almost any situation. For more coaching on draw shots, see Byrne’s Standard Video of Pool, Volume I.

In Memory Of ...John Brewer Z-Man took down the House pro

John Brewer passed away February 7th 2007 after a very massive attack of lung cancer. He will be truly missed by many, many people. Those of you that didn’t know John missed the privilege of being in the presence of a genuine good person. He valued family, friendship, fair play and he would always root for the underdog. John had a unique sense of humor and liked nothing more than to make you laugh. John spent his early years in the Gig Harbor area, then moved to Auburn and later Kent, Washington. He worked for Boeing as a CVC mechanic for more than 15 years, and then he got back out in the fresh air doing construction until his illness. John was an avid pool fan, playing league 2-3 times a week out of the Interchange in Kent, also supporting the local tournaments in between those nights. He played APA for more that 10 years and made it to the National Tournament in Las Vegas twice. John also played TAP for five years going to Nationals in Kentucky twice. If he wasn’t playing he was probably watching, you could often run into him at the big boy tournaments where he would know who most everyone was and could usually pick the winners. A couple of his most recent trips were to the IPT tournaments in Reno and Las Vegas where he rubbed elbows with his (and our) idols. Along with pool, John loved golf, when he was playing regularly he often shot in the 80’s. There are plans for a tournament the weekend of May 18th (John’s birthday) the idea is to make it an annual event, and hopefully it will get enough interest and support to attract the quality of players John enjoyed watching so much. 8429 South 228th St Thanks to everyone for all their Kent, WA 98031 prayers and well wishes.

Mike Zimmerman enjoyed an undefeated run and beat last month’s Champion House pro Randy Camantigue in the final 5-2. Z-Man showed his usual form throughout the tournament. “It’s great playing against Zimmerman in the final,” said Randy Camantigue, “I have always Mike Zimmerman enjoyed playing against one of the best and if you pay attention you will always learn something.” Zimmerman may have had a little bit more incentive beating up on the House pro because the match is being filmed so it can be seen on our website at www.unclejacksbilliards.com. McDermott All American Tour Results from Nite Hawk

The thirty-third stop of the 2006/ 2007 McDermott All American Tour (produced by the American CueSports Alliance - ACS) was hosted at Nite Hawk Café & Lounge, in Portland, OR on the weekend of April 20-22, and featured a $1,500 added purse with thirty-nine players. The event included a doubleelimination 9-ball format on 8-foot bar boxes. Stan Tourangeau (Vancouver, BC) ran undefeated to the finals. In the hot-seat match, Tourangeau comfortably dispatched Zac Masiba (Vancouver, WA) 9-4. Earlier in the A-bracket semi-finals, Tourangeau outplayed Dan Louie (Seattle, WA) 9-4, while Masiba knocked off Jessie Allred (Portland, OR) 9-4. In the B-side quarterfinals Mike Zimmerman (Seattle, WA) eliminated Louie 9-7, while Glenn Atwell (Portland, OR) ousted Allred 9-3; Atwell took out Zimmerman 9(l to r) Glenn Atwell, Stan Tourangeau 7 in the semifinals; and in the B-side finals Atwell ended Masiba’s run by a 9-6 margin. The tourney finals was one set to 11, and both Tourangeau and Atwell battled to the very end, with Stan Tourangeau clipping Glenn Atwell for the title by an 11-10 margin!

Housed in the old University Union Men’s Club Mansion, Winfield’s Twisted Cue Club opened its doors April 1st to the public and enticed the pallet with fine cuisine and a first class billiards room. Owner and Master Chef, Thomas Mott remarked, “It is a fine dining restaurant with Sunday Brunch, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. We also have the Billiards Room downstairs with six pool tables and one very nice reconditioned 1908 Brunswick Collender 9 footer. The 9 footer is $6 an hour and the 7 footers are Valley Dynamo’s with new Simonis 860 cloth, and new rails. The room is set up for the pool enthusiast who want to play tournaments and play a little more seriously in a classy joint. We are set up as a plush, classy establishment.” I asked Chef Thomas about his unique combination of restaurant and pool hall and he said, “This out of the ordinary concept is why I went with it. I’m a billiards player myself. I play in APA and BCA and have played at Nationals in Las Vegas for both leagues. So I have the hobby of playing pool and the career of being a chef. I stumbled across this place, it was for lease, and thought it was a great way to combine my two passions. I gave it a facelift on the inside, pretty much stripped everything carpet, walls, kitchen and rebuilt it to a nice modern age bringing a touch of the new and the old together.” Plans are in the works for league players in the Twisted Cue Club. APA will be playing their finals and BCA is looking to have some teams there. The Billiard Room has a small pro shop with pool cues, supplies and

repairs (cues, tips, shaft cleaning, etc.) done by Frank Lefevers. I asked Chef Thomas to describe his establishment and he replied, “We have a Northwest Cuisine with a European flair. We have Northwest Clam Chowder everyday, Northwest Salmon, Halibut, Stuffed Cod, Porterhouse and New York Steaks and specials with seafood and steak as well. We also have pastas - a well rounded menu - a nice variety of items. This is not meant to be the type of dining experience where you are in a hurry. You can come here and have a reasonably priced meal and enjoy the fantastic views of Commencement Bay from our 1100 square foot deck. You can’t get this kind of view in a pool hall or a fine dining restaurant anywhere in Tacoma, all wrapped up into one.” Winfield’s has a full spirits list and boasts 120 varieties of martini from the two bars on the premises. The upstairs bar has live bands, dancing, jazz and blues. Downstairs in the Billiard Room there is a jukebox and a bar with domestic and imports. Their extensive wine list features Washington wines. They started Friday night playing one or two rounds in the winners and if you lost a match you didn’t play until Saturday. Trivia questions were asked over the loud speaker such as, “Who were the MCMOA members in the picture in the souvenir program published by “The Break?” “In what city and what location was the MCMOA first held?” and if you knew the answer to any of the trivia questions you won a 2007 MCMOA Tshirt. As Saturday wound down for all the brackets, players began to be eliminated and by late afternoon the winners of the 16 player bracket and the winner of each of the loser’s brackets found their way into Sunday’s finals. Sunday starts off with a redraw and all players begin the day with no losses. Past winners who made it into the finals were: Jeff Boucher, Dan Hamper, Jason Dawes, Jerry Kohm, Dave Schwartz, Jason Tigart, Randy Sayre and on the Women’s side Sky Tigart, Judy Lorengo, Janet Dunks, Sue Miller and Carol Todd. All the tables were moved out except for six in the main room for finals, Men’s A and B, Women’s A and B, and the Second Chance Men’s and Women’s. Billy Saunders (Billings), who placed second in last year’s tournament to Jeff Boucher (Bozeman), is again playing Jeff in the finals. The MCMOA officers are considering a change in venue in 2008 to start a master’s division - invitational only. This is not set in stone as yet. The MCMOA has listened to the players and feels that it is both advantageous to the game and the players to extend a master’s division. Future press releases will explain the decision and the venue starting in 2008. Don remarked, “had over 200 ERO’s with a 10 team format as well as a 30-ZIP by Jeff Boucher. It’s been a really smooth year in the city tournament, there where 30 odd teams that vied for two paid spots at the VNEA National Championships. The women’s tournament as well as the city tournament all ran on time and even a little ahead.” Don also Hub #5 (l to r) Hing Tsang, Christine MacDonald, mentioned that Lyn Seavey, Greg Gizinski, Garl Wiese, (kneeling) Jason Lucht there were more players signed up for singles this year, “I have about 17 or 18 signed up right now compared to maybe 6-7-8 usually.” When I asked him about changes to the leagues next season, Don said, “The thing of it is - this is my 17th or 18th year. In a sport everything we do is work. We pay our bills and send people to Vegas. You have that many people playing pool and everybody has a different philosophy on how to do it - “maybe you should do this” or “maybe you should to that” and maybe it would work and maybe it wouldn’t but we just go with what works. And these players that complain about not having a chance to go to Vegas - my suggestion is to play more and get better like the other players did to get there. The whole thing of Las Vegas is to send your best teams there - that’s what it’s all about. I go back to the Big Sky Tournament, if you win first place you go to the national tournament and they get put up against a seed like UCLA. This is the same thing - my worst place teams are playing my first place teams in the tournaments and that’s just the way it works in bracketing. I know the thing I’m going to emphasize to everyone next year is that to play in Vegas you need 12 WEEKS of play and NOT 12 GAMES - it’s 36 games. Overall it was a great year. The VNEA leagues in Bozeman, Montana start in early fall, usually the first Tuesday in October, the Tuesday preceding the first league night is the Captain’s Meeting which has turned into a Player’s Meeting for questions, answers, new rules, debates, arguing whys and why nots and what is expected in the upcoming league year. There are five separate leagues with 4 of them being played in or around Bozeman. The Valley league that stretches thirty-odd miles down to Sponsor of the VNEA Bozeman Leagues the “banana belt”, the lowest point in the county saw an increase of 25% in league participation. This only allowed us to play each team once; usually we play one at their home and one at our home. All leagues are on a 15 game rotating format, 5 person teams that holds true for 4 out of 5 of the leagues. The women’s league play a 4 person round 27 YEAR SPONSOR robin. The referee determined the game should be played over. At these moments, most players are very passionate about what they believe, that doesn’t make either player right or wrong. Each should explain to the other why they thought it was or wasn’t a foul. If no agreement can be reached, then replay the game. The favorite team and winner of the league was the Molly Brown #1. They lost in the quarterfinals and had to beat the Eagles #2 team twice. The women’s tournament was held at the Eagles Club hosted by Dick Jones. In the women’s league the Cats Paw #1 team won their league championship and won their tournament to return to Vegas where last year they place second in the women’s division. The members were: Jen Pavlovick, Amy Neel, Loreen Carey and Tina Sponsor of the VNEA Bozeman Leagues Hansen. Rocky Mountain Gaming has run our league system for the past 27 years and our league sponsor is Bud Light. SAN DIEGO CLASSIC FINAL JASMINE OUSCHAN VS KELLY FISHER Kelly Fisher will be going for a 3-peat while Jasmine Ouschan is striving to be two for two in her professional events in the states. Both players played very well in their semi-final matches and the crowd is in for quite a display of skill, talent, and mental Kelly Fisher toughness. We are set for the lag. Kelly Fisher wins the lag and makes the 5 on the break but is forced to play a safety on the 1. Ouschan makes a tremendous rail first cut along the head rail but unfortunately scratches in the corner which so often happens on that particular shot. Fisher begins with ball in hand and runs to the 8 leaving a makeable shot for Jasmine which she misses. Kelly plays a nice safety by thinning the 8 and leaves the cue ball on top of the 9. Jasmine tries to thin the 8 but catches it a little full and scratches in the side. Game 1 to Fisher Jasmine comes up dry on the break in game 2. Fisher has a shot on the 1, makes the 2 but misses a thin cut on the 3. Ouschan also misses a thin cut on the 3 hanging it in the corner. Fisher takes advantage of the opportunity and takes a 2-0 lead with the break. Fisher pockets the 3 on the break and makes a fabulous cut into the side

on the 1 only to miss the 2 ball. Jasmine has another uncharacteristic miss relinquishing control of the table back to Fisher who neatly manages both object balls and cue ball to take a 3-0 lead. Ouschan comes up dry and leaves a safety opportunity for Fisher which she executes to perfection. Ouschan makes a nifty 2 rail hit with good speed to not leave an offensive shot. Kelly returns another great safety only overshadowed by Jasmine pocketing the 1 rail kick into the corner with shape on the 2. It appears Jasmine ran just long for the 3 and has to play safe tying the 3 with the 8. Kelly can see the 3 however, and plays a good safe. Jasmine makes a spectacular hit with perfect speed. Fisher returns and forces an error from Jasmine who leaves a shot on the 3 in the side. Kwik-Fire Fisher makes short work of the rest of the rack for a dominate 4-0 lead AND the break. Fisher comes up dry on the break. Jasmine with a difficult position requirement on the 2, just over cuts the 1 but ends up safe. Kelly takes her extension and ends up taking an intentional tying up the 3-6. Jasmine makes the 1 and plays a combo on the 2-8 which she makes but doesn’t end up with a shot on the 2 and plays safe. Fisher goes for a long Jasmin Ouschan rail bank on the two which hangs up on these incredibly tight pockets but is safe on the two-way. Ouschan fails to hit the 2 and Fisher continues on her quest taking the lead 5-0. Continued........page 32

China’s Pan Claims World Title Chinese sensation Xiaoting Pan has taken a giant step toward solidifying her credentials as an elite player by winning the prestigious 2007 Amway Women’s World 9-Ball Championship, in perhaps the Xiaoting Pan strongest field ever assembled for an international women’s event. Pan clobbered newcomer Rubilen Amit of the Philippines, 11-5, in the final of the Championship, held April 5-8 in Tao-Yuan, Taiwan. She pocketed $20,000 for the win, and Amit took home $10,000. In yet another sign of the continuing Asian takeover of international pool, the finishers tied for third place were Pei-Jen Tsai of Taiwan and Yukiko Hamanishi of Japan. How tough was the competition in Tao-Yuan? Former world champion Hsin-Mei Liu finished tied for fifth; BCA Open champion Jasmin Ouschan of Austria was tied for 17th; and Allison Fisher didn’t make it out of the group stages. Barely five feet tall, Pan is quickly becoming a towering presence in women’s pool. Just two weeks prior to the Amway Championship, Pan had secured her first title on the Women’s Professional Billiard Association Classic Tour. She beat Helena Thornfeldt of Sweden, 7-2, at the Great Lakes Classic in Michigan City, Ind.

Over 250 participants joined Jamie Moyer, Richie Sexson, Gil Meche and other Mariners, as well as Seahawks Matt Hasselbeck, Grant Wistrom and Marcus Trufant to raise over $225,000 at the 7th Annual Jamie Moyer Celebrity Bowling and Billiards Tournament on Sunday, June 4. Proceeds went to The Moyer Foundation Endowment for Excellence in Pediatric Palliative Care and Child Life Programs at Children’s Hospitalto support children in severe distress. Participants at this annual event had the exclusive opportunity to bowl and shoot pool side-by-side with nearly 40 Mariners and Seahawks. The bowling tournament was won by Mariners starting pitcher Gil Meche, who took the title from last year ’s champion, Mariners reliever J.J. Putz. “We are very excited about the success of this event,” said Moyer Foundation Executive Director, Gary Pollock. “This is the first time the Seahawks and Mariners teams have come together to support the annual tournament. It’s such a unique opportunity for fans to interact one-on-one with their sports heroes, and at the same time support a great cause. We are incredibly grateful to all the players

March 31 - April 1, 2007 - The Cue Ball in Salem, OR was the host of the NWPA’s 2nd tournament of 2007. Once again, Jim and the crew were perfect hosts, bringing in complimentary food and coffee, plus having their many tables in perfect condition. With thirty (30) players entered, it was one of our better attended Oregon stops in a while. Play started Saturday morning with many closely fought matches. The consensus opinion is that the overall skill level is increasing and there just aren’t any easy matches or overwhelming favorites anymore. This should make the points battle interesting this year. I don’t recommend players missing any tour stops, as a few points may decide the Season Champion. By Sunday, the field was pared down to the final eight (8). On the “A” side, Cindy Sliva beat Natalie Seal 7-4 and Liz Cole came from 2-6 to beat Kim Hole 7-6 to play for the point. In this, Liz finished strong again and won 7-3. Bumped to the “B” side, Natalie squeaked past Mary Olson 7-6 and Kim, angry from her loss, beat Mikki Small 7-2. Kim was on a mission, then beating Natalie 7-3 and Cindy 7-3 for a rematch with Liz. Once again, Kim jumped to an early 7-4 lead, but Liz reached back and took over with some impressive shooting to win 9-7. Thanks to all the players and the Cue Ball for such a great tournament and fun time. Mike Jensen from Longview, Washington is known for his dedication to pool and has played league pool for approximately 40 years. Mike and his wife Rosie have been a huge help in encouraging the young players at the Caddy to get involved in the leagues. He is looked up to and admired by all the up and coming pool players in Longview as well as the old fogies who have known him for years. His tournament play has greatly improved due to all of leagues he has played throughout the years. Mike has won the Lower Columbia Open Pool League many times in both doubles and singles. He has played BCA here in Longview for many years (Currently In-House at the Cadillac Ranch in Longview). In the BCA he’s won Hi pt and Hi Run many times and his team has taken 1st in the division many times. --nominated by Cindy Doty, Northwest Players League

Cascade Pool League Going On T en Years Ten

Cascade Pool League (CPL) has provided its players with weekly pool competition for close to a decade in the greater Portland, Oregon area. They have organized the average player, the avid player and the top player in a blend of fun, competition and entertainment. Over 900 individual members and numerous locations have participated in Cascade Pool League since 1998. Many of the people who played the first year are still playing in the league. League Operator Andrew Monstis has been running and managing leagues and brokering pool activities since 1983, the last nine years for Cascade Pool League. This is an all-inclusive activity span of 25 years of dedication to the pool community unsurpassed by anyone. With the help of his cooperator and wife, Sassy Campbell, Andrew has made Cascade Pool League the Mercedes of pool leagues. Together they have worked tirelessly,

putting together players, locations and events that benefit both sponsors and players. Trying to make everyone happy is an endless job and the effort has been continual. In the midst of the politics, CPL has managed to mix positive innovation with immense traditions. Cascade Pool League has affiliated with national organizations BCA Pool League (BCAPL) and Valley National Eight ball Association (VNEA) over the years. This has been very successful and non-conflicting arrangement to create an enhanced situation for players. CPL is the home of the 2000 International VNEA Team Champions. The CPL Philosophy has been to provide fun and engaging activities that stems from the early days of leagues in our community. Cascade Pool League believes that league is more just qualifying for something. Pool league is about more than showing up just to play or qualify - it's

Cascade players have many resources to draw from and many pool formats to play. The goal has always been to create a fun league with events and activities to look forward to. Cascade strives to involve sponsors in the mix and bring new players to their establishments during the year. Players are kept informed on local, regional and national pool news. Andrew and Sassy and other CPL management volunteer year-round with others in the Western BCA to put on regional tournaments for all the players, giving up much of their personal time to help make those events a success. Both location sponsors and players contribute together to make this the best league around. Contributions from team sponsors, a tradition for 40 years, continue with Cascade Pool

League. Thousands of added dollars accompany CPL main events midseason tournament, Interdivisional (City) Playoffs and the Annual Awards Bash, where recently a weeklong trip for two to Hawaii was given away. Sponsors make up a big part of CPL. Without them, it would be difficult to maintain the excellent series of events and awards that CPL is known for. This year will be the best year yet. Many things are being planned to make CPL's 10th year a banner year. New locations ~ more sponsoring ~ bigger Awards Bash. CPL players deserve to have entertainment and more and CPL is providing it. MANKATO to host BEF Junior Nationals & ACUI Collegiate Championships this summer The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) has finalized arrangements to combine the 19th Annual Junior Nationals to be played in conjunction with the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Collegiate 9-Ball Championships for the 3rd consecutive year. Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU) will host this event on July 10th - 15th, 2007. ACUI competition will be held on July 10th-12th, while the Junior excitement begins Thursday thru Sunday, July 12th -15th .

ACS JUNIOR NATIONALS & “CHALLENGE OF THE PROS” TO BENEFIT BEF ANNOUNCED The American CueSports Alliance is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual ACS National Junior 8-Ball Championships during the 2007 ACS National Championships at

the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, June 19-16. Divisions will include Singles Divisions (Boys 18 & Under, Boys 14 & Under, Girls 18 & Under and Girls 14 & Under) - Monday, June 11 - Wednesday, June 13; and 3person junior team division Thursday, June 14 & Friday, June 15. Junior-aged players may also compete in the adult divisions of the ACS National Championships in 9ball team (June 7-8), 9-ball Singles (June 9-10), Scotch Doubles (June 9-10) and 8-Ball team divisions (June 13-16). Players from ACS-sanctioned Junior leagues are qualified to compete in all divisions except adult 8-ball singles divisions. Non-league junior-aged amateur players may pay a $25 ACS Sanctioned Player (non-league) membership and compete in the junior 8-ball singles and the adult 9-ball singles divisions. In addition to the Championships, the ACS will be hosting the ESPNOpen Daily from 5pm - 2am

Bob Zack had runs of 43, 50, and 65 balls along the way to winning the April 1st Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’s Billiards. Darin Walding, who came in second, had a run of 36. Aaron Roberts of Olympia came in third and Paul Lamar, 4th. A revised format had the field of 19 players playing in groups of three and four, with the winners of each group and 2 wild cards (best score on the loss) advancing to an 8Bob Zack person finals. The finals were in a time-shortened double elimination format. The tournament was finished in less than six and a half hours and seems to meet everyone’s needs. With the greater number of players these days, the format may still be tweaked a little but the framework is working. The shot as drawn is easy to predict because the cue ball moves only a very short distance between the 1 ball and the 3 ball. You can be off by quite a lot on where you contact the 1 and still land in about the same place on the 3. Shot B is quite a bit harder to predict because the balls are farther apart, but they are sitting just right for a ghost ball carom. What I look for in a situation like this is the line from middle of the ghost ball to the middle of the 4 ball and then to the pocket. This happens to be a straight line. I can then use my uncanny ability to scratch to play the cue ball off the 2 to make the 4. If the shot is not sitting quite straight I need to figure where on the cushion to send the ghost ball from the first object ball. Another trick to help with Shot B if you can’t visualize the ghost ball is to note the line from the left edge of the 2 ball past the right edge of the 4 and on to the right side of the pocket. This will be the path of the right edge of the ghost ball. A final trick for aiming close caroms like these is to first find the line the ghost ball wants to take. You know that the cue ball and (first) object ball always travel at a right angle to each other. Just send the first object ball at a right angle to the path you want the cue ball to take from the ghost ball position. If you can shoot the 2 ball along the indicated line, the cue ball has to pocket the 4. Be sure not to have any draw or follow on the cue ball or it will bend off the right-angle line. Well, one last trick. If the balls are sitting almost perfectly for the shot, but you need to pull the object ball over just a little, you can use some side spin on the cue ball to adjust the angle with throw. Using Ray Marin’s ghost ball method of aiming close caroms is a technique you need to practice before you use it. At first try using an extra ball to stand in for the ghost ball when sighting. You may find that you tend to aim a little full or thin on the shots, and it’s best to find and solve that problem on the practice table rather than in the league finals.
