Atwell’s Stellar Play Claims Title

Nite Hawk Portland, OR April 11-13, 2008 $1,500 added The forty-seventh stop of the 2007/2008 Pechauer All American Tour (produced by the American CueSports Alliance - ACS) The event drew the maximum forty-eight players in a double-elimination 9-ball format on 8-foot bar boxes. Former pro Dan Louie (Seattle, WA) marched undefeated to the finals. In the A-side finals, Louie easily took down Damian Redman (Portland, OR) 9-3. Earlier in the A-bracket semis, Louie overcame Bob Olson (Vancouver, WA) 9-7, while Redman bested Bob Zack (Portland, OR) 9-5. In the previous A-side round, Louie outpointed Jesse Allred (Vancouver, WA) 9-3, Bob Olson clipped Glenn Atwell (Portland, OR) 9-8, Damian Redman eased past Allen Hanson (Tacoma, WA) 9-4, while Bob Zack dominated Gary Crane (Portland, OR) 9-2. In the B-side “last 8” Allen Hanson eliminated Gary Crane at 7th place by a 9-2 margin, while Jesse Allred tied Crane via a 7-9 loss to Glenn Atwell. In the quarterfinals, Hanson and Atwell ended the runs of Bob Olson 9-8 and Bob Zack 9-6 respectively. In the B-side semis, Atwell stopped Hanson at 4th

place by a score of 9-7. The B-side finals featured Atwell finishing off Redman at 3rd place 9-5. The tourney finals featured undefeated Dan Louie versus Glenn Atwell in a one-set, extended race-to-11, and Atwell continued his stellar play to claim the title over Louie 11-7! By virtue of Glen Atwell being the highestfinishing ACS member in the event, he qualified for a free singles entry into the 2008 ACS Nationals in Las Vegas - courtesy of the ACS. The ACS wishes to thank sponsors J. Pechauer Custom Cues, Championship Billiard Fabric and Nick Varner Signature Cases for their support in donating “Value-In-Kind” product for this and all stops on the Pechauer All American Tour. BreakRAK This product was reviewed by Mike Akerlow, who has been playing competitively for a relatively short period of time. He had this to say about the BreakRAK, “I didn’t really believe it at first but steadily I seemed to be more and more consistent. It’s like any other shot the more times you shoot it the better you’re going to be at it. It seemed like I saw an improvement almost right away. This amazing product will gave me instant results on improving my break. I was able to see first hand where I was striking the rack and where my cue ball ended up.” The BreakRAK simulates a rack of balls with this unique bow system. It is simple but accurate. It is well constructed and assembled for quick and easy installation on my pool table. It is built to withstand the constant punishment of continually breaking without losing any of its spring. Designed by Charley Bond, the BreakRAK can help you improve your break dramatically. “Improving my break has always been a very time consuming and back breaking task. Now with the BreakRAK I can simulate my break time after time after time without having to worry about re-racking. I can quickly do break after break. This gives me the advantage of gaining cue ball control in a very short period of time. I can really see what’s happening on my

break because the other balls in the rack are not there. I can see what will happen with the cue ball if I break the rack from a certain position or hit the head ball with or without english.” Cue ball control is the key to a good break by leaving the cue ball in the center of the table after the break. Mike remarked, “With the BreakRAK I can devote more time to align my stance, perfect my bridge placement, adjust my grip on the cue, position the contact point, develop my stroke strength and speed and watch my follow through. By isolating my break all these things can be easily adjusted on my next attempt without re-racking a set of balls.“ I found the BreakRAK easy to set up and in just a few minutes I was ready to start practicing my break. “If you are looking to try a different break or try something new with your break, the BreakRAK is a quick and easy way to see what will happen before you try it out in a game or in competition. This can be a real advantage”, commented Mike. Pool players looking to improve their break should invest in the BreakRAK. It will be worth the price. NWPA BEGINS 9 Ball at Houdini’s Billiards THEIR NEW SEASON

May 2008

By Mike “Houdini” Dolan

The northwest has some fine pool players and many of them call Whidbey Island their home. With the January opening of Houdini’s Billiards in Freeland, serious players can find a challenge right in their own back yard. Featuring 8 Ball on Mondays and 9 Ball on Wednesdays, Houdini’s is attracting players Michael, Chuck, Justin, Kit from all over the island. Sunday the 27th, 12 players got together for the “Freeland Strokers Special” Nine Ball tournament. With a race to five, double elimination format, play got under way at 10:00 AM. On the winners side Michael Dodd worked his magic and beat Dexter Lewis to take on Ray Comacho. After going 4-3 Michael finally took the match sending Ray to the losers bracket. Next up Michael faced Chuck Hassler. Though Chuck played strong in the first two games, Michael proved to be a tough opponent sending Chuck to join Dex and Ray in the losers bracket. From the lower side of the winners bracket Justin Barnes was proving to be the other dominant player besting Aaron Koontz-Dalton, then taking out Frank Rose and Kit Cristopherson to face Michael for the playoff pole position. This was another tough match but (9-Ball continued on page 23)

from: Chris Rogers and Ford, Tournament Directors

On March 29th and 30th, the NWPA opened its 2008 season once again at “The Parlor Billiards and Spirits” in Bellevue. There were thirty five players ready to try out a new season, and without last year’s dominating Kyoko Sone, who is now a full time WPBA tour player, the field seems wide open. Every Friday night before a tournament the draw is done, and there is always more than a few players, husbands, etc there to practice and watch the seeding. So on Saturday it was interesting to hear over and over how amazing The Parlor is, especially their happy hour prices where a long list of food items range from $1.99 to $3.99 and drink Kim Jones specials are too many to name. More good news is that starting in May, happy hour prices will be available all day every Sunday. Matches started Saturday morning on time, but with such tight competition, there were 16 players still alive when we broke for the day, so Sunday was a busy, full day. The A side had Elizabeth Jensen losing 7-3 to Linda Carter and Cindy Sliva getting past Suzanne Osborne 7-4. From the B side, Kim Jones, who has moved to Atlanta (which won’t be for long if Ford and I get our way) but was conveniently in town, marched through a tough field by beating Kit Dennis 7-4, Mary Hopkin 7-4, Elizabeth J. 7-3, Suzanne O. 7-4, and in a rematch with Cindy S. who put her on the B side late Saturday, won 7-3. The finals, as always was one race to 9, and Kim continued hot by staking a 4-0 lead, but Linda is too much a pro to be flustered and came back to tie it 4-4. After Kim got the next one, they traded games until Kim lead 8-7. The previous three breaks, two by Linda and one by Kim, each had left the nine hanging in the far left pocket, and then made on an early combo, and with Kim breaking on the hill, she left it in the same spot. However, this time a stray ball crossed from the side and pocketed the nine, giving Kim the match. Congrats to Kim for qualifying for the WPBA Great Lakes Classic later this year (thank you Parlor Billiards for buying the $500.00 WPBA entry), and to Linda for such a strong showing. We would also like to thank Linda for donating another trip to the NWPA to help raise money to make our end of the season tournament at WPBA Qualifier (get your tickets; we will be raffling off the trip in October). We will be in Lynnwood at Uncle Jacks in June. Please visit the website www.nwpatour.com to view the 2008 tournament dates. We’ll see you then.

Try A Ticky By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

Email Questions to: jewett@sfbilliards.com harada@sfbilliards.com mejia@sfbilliards.com

San Francisco Billiard Academy www.sfbilliards.com There are some shots that are a lot easier and more predictable than they look. The “ticky” is one of these shots. This shot comes to pool from carom billiards. In a ticky, the object ball is usually quite close to the cushion and Bob Jewett the cue ball strikes the cushion just before the ball, then the ball, and then back to the same cushion. At pool, tickies are most useful when you can’t hit a shot directly but there are times when you are better off going to the rail first even though you can see the whole target ball. Shot A shows an example from nine ball where you will either win or get a good safety. You are blocked from hitting the one ball directly. If you had no way to hit the one ball, you should just pocket the nine with the four-nine combo. In this particular situation, hit rail first and then the one ball. If you use running English (left in this case) and follow on the cue ball, it will naturally return to the cushion and spin into the nine ball. With a little practice, you can control the speed and the path of the one ball to get a safe if you

miss by driving the one ball towards the X. Most beginners will hit this shot too hard. If you don’t use the running English and follow, the angle will be far less consistent. If you have to pull the cue ball away from the rail after contact, draw the cue ball, but you

better practice first as it’s hard to control. If the nine were not hung in the pocket, a good play would be to use draw on the cue ball to keep it from going forwards towards the pocket. Even more draw will bring the cue ball back to stick on the five ball. Both of these draw strategies assume that the path for the one ball is clear to get to the other end of the table. Shot B is a possible safe play. You have no good shot on the two ball and would like to stick the cue ball on the far cushion while bringing the two ball to the other end of the table. You could play the shot with draw to get a stop or stun shot, or you could play with follow and a full hit to make the cue ball bend back to the far cushion. Both of those methods require you to hit the object ball pretty hard, and it might come back to that end of the table. Instead, play the cue ball to hit the end cushion first as close to the object ball as possible. With a little left English, the cue ball will hit the two ball nearly full and return to the cushion. This is a very important shot to know, and you also have to be familiar with its variations. During practice vary the distance of the object ball from the cushion and the angle of approach of the cue ball. In the illustrated position, see if you can walk the cue ball over between the two balls and the cushion at Y. You will need to adjust the angle, spin and speed to accomplish this. Finally, work for a while on pocketing the two ball into pocket Z. Check out the spot you need to hit t h e rail while standing near the two — how close do you have to come on the inbound path to hit it towards the pocket? Of course for some positions it’s impossible, but again try to learn the angles and spins that work for a particular distance of the two from the rail.

Buzz Poleson won his first Sam’s Billiards Monthly Straight Pool tournament in years Sunday, April 6th, beating Damian Rebman who won the March tournament. Buzz said that in the couple of weeks he had off for spring break he played a lot of pool, which clearly brought him up a notch. He also had the rails on his home table redone by David Randell (Big Foot Billiards) and has found great joy in playing on what feels like a new table. Sixteen players participated in the April tournament, which featured at least 7 runs of more than 20 balls. Damian took the high run honors again with exactly the same high run as in March—a run of 31. Bill Bradford beat Darin Walding for 3rd place after losing to Buzz. Buzz beat Sam Rabito, Akio Nakashima, and Michael Jensen in the first round to advance to finals. Michael’s game has also improved substantially with the addition of a new 9-foot Brunswick table to his household. Bill beat Justin Lilje, Norton Johnson, and newcomer Roger Scott to reach the finals. Damian beat David Yuen, Paul Lemar, and Will Ford in the first round. Darin beat Kevin Long, Mike Medlock, and Harold Douglas on his path to the finals. The final results were as follows: 1st $70 Buzz Poleson 2nd $55 Damian Rebman 3rd $40 Bill Bradford 4th $20 Darin Walding High Run: 31 - Damian Rebman The next first-Sunday-of-the-month Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’s Billiards is May 4th. Desert Classic Tour Q & A’s

9

by: Don “Cheese” Akerlow

I had the pleasure of talking to Dennis Orender and Jimmy Mendoza, tour directors, about their plans for the Desert Classic Tour. Here is how it went. 1. What are the plans for the Desert Classic Tour this and next year and beyond? This year, our initial goal was to be able to do approximately 8 successful tour stops throughout the state (mostly Tucson/Phoenix area). We wanted to have something towards the end of the year, right before Christmas, so we decided to add a championship tournament in December, with all of the membership money going to that tourney. One important thing to point out is this is a non profit tour in 2008. Jimmy and I are putting all of the money back into the tournaments, this includes, money from memberships, entry fees, etc...My initial goal was to be able to match and/ or top Chuck Bobbitt’s Desert Dust Off, so that we could have two large added tourneys in Arizona throughout the year. (He does more than some people realize for AZ. Pool, and he is a big reason why this tour got off the ground so quickly.) This means we needed to generate over 5K in added money to the finale. We’ve already hit that. In the future, we would like to gather more sponsorship $ and possibly make each stop $1500 to $2000 added, obviously with a much larger added finale at the end of the year. Also, we plan on having possibly 9 to 10 stops and one finale in the future. It would be nice to someday have a 25K added championship tournament at the end of the year. I think that would really put Arizona on the map for pool.

2. Now that you’ve had a couple of stops, have you instituted any new policies? Something that might include more players or make the tour appealing to a wider range of players from outside of the Arizona area? We have not really instituted any new policies since the first stop. One thing we did modify at the first

stop was mock collars/turtle necks allowed and/or dress type shirts at the events and no flip-flops. We also voted on money balls not counting in bottom two corner pockets on the break (for 9/10 ball), the vote to not allow them to count in the bottom two corners on the break was overwhelming. 3. Who are your sponsors? We currently have 11sponsors: Chuck Bobbitt (Visual Impressions) is title sponsor/Al Terpstra Law Offices, Rick Schmitz (Rixx Pixx), Azpoolscene.com. az billiards info newspaper, Nick Varner Custom Cues/Cases, Dale Teague Custom cues, Keith Nickerson Custom Cues, Tiger Products, OnQcases, Jeff Pranke graphic design and leather wraps.

4. How many stops do you have? 8 stops and one championship tournament at end of the year, in December. 5. Is there a year end tournament planned? Yes, already well over 5K added guaranteed. We have 6 stops left, any membership money accumulated or money earned from raffles will go towards this event as well. This is a non profit tour. Jimmy and I are throwing all of the money back into this tournament. The venue for the year end tournament and the date have yet to be determined. We are considering all our options and will make an announcement about the finale sometime later this summer. 6. Have you started looking towards 2009 yet? We’ve talked about it a little, Depending on how much success we have this year, we will sit down and look at how we can improve it for next year and beyond. This is the first time we have taken on such a huge task and we expect to make mistakes along the way. So long as we correct them and move on, I think each year will only be bigger and better. One thing we would like to do next year is definitely add 1 or 2 more tour stops. Being as we got off to a late start this year, we had to limit it to 8. I would like to thank Dennis and Jimmy for taking their time to talk to me and wish them the best with their tour. Hopefully OTBnTV will be able to come and film an event in the near future.

TUCSON, AZ Teams from Old Pueblo Cuesports took home top honors at the fourth annual American Cuesports of Arizona State Team Championships, held April 19th at Tucson’s Main Street Billiards. Defending national champs the Main Street MS Q’s made it four years in a row with another undefeated tournament win, including a finals win over the 43rd Tavern STR8T THRU. The MS Q’s consisting of Olivia Jackson, Mary Moench, Lois Schmitt, Martha Zanetis and captained by Tracey Elliott, continue to set the pace for women’s pool in Arizona - way to go ladies! Over in the Open/Mixed Team Division, Main Street’s BOBZILLAS finally shed their bridesmaid reputation by winning it all this year. It took a double race finals for the ZILLAS to get there as NICKY’S CREW also hailing from Main Street gave them all they could handle. The BOBZILLAS, captained by Jerry Wilcox, includes Kevin Peterson, Andy Kachur, Jim Bentley and Tim Christopher. It was an outstanding year for Main Street’s Old Pueblo Cuesports League members as they took home to Tucson four out of the five state titles.

Smith Captures Desert Classic from: Bob Jackson

Young gun, Danny Smith, walked away with top honors at the second stop of the 2008 Arizona Desert Classic Tour. This tournament was held April 12th and 13th, at Tucson’s Main Street Billiards. This event featured eight-ball on the nine foot tables. The tournament drew forty players. After losing the hot seat match to Dennis Orender, Smith had to get by Tucson’s Tom Neil for another shot at Dennis in the finals. Rounding out the final four was Arizona’s own young gun, Mitch Ellerman. Ellerman was coming off his recent win at the U.S Bar Table Championships held in Reno, Nevada. Dennis Orender’s path to the hot seat included wins over Colin Winter, Ed Scott, George Teyechea, Rod Thompson, and Smith. Prior to losing the hot seat match to Orender, Danny

REBOUNDING

NEW SERVICES ARIZIONA

By Roger Long, Advanced Certified Instructor

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - In January 2008 a new billiards website was launched by Roger Long & Associates. The name of the new site is ArizBilliardsDirectory.com, and it is just that; a free directory to anything and everything related to the billiards industry in the state of Arizona. Long’s new website recently caught the attention of Internet surfers who then made many positive comments about it in discussion forums on other billiards websites. One poster even proposed that ArizBilliardsDirectory.com should be used as a model for websites promoting pool in other states. One category on ArizBilliardsDirectory.com that garners a lot of interest that being the list of rated players - also prompts a frequent question: why aren’t 10,000+ rated players listed when that has long been the number believed to be active in Arizona? Roger Long answers that question with, “Our data compilations, which were done over a four-year period by researching tournament and league reports in various billiards publications and by issuing many new ratings to players in our own tournaments, revealed that the actual number of currently active tournament players in Arizona is more like 2,000-3,000.” Long further explains that while a few active players may have somehow been overlooked by his researchers, the players can still be added anytime at their own request. The really neat thing about this new rating service is that the list can be constantly updated; meaning room owners and tournament directors will no longer have to attend ratings meetings or wait long spells to get updated printings. Instead, they can now e-mail in their changes daily, and then simply go to their computers and print off the most recently updated list. So come visit us at www.arizbilliardsdirectory.com and see how we can be of service to you.

I got beat last night! Boy did I ever get beat last night. Out of 60 possible match- points, I scored a measly 9 points. That’s all - 9 stinking points! That’s an all-time low for me. Heck, that’s not only a very low score; it’s a score that a mere beginner would be ashamed of. It was like I didn’t even show up for that meet. I must be losing it. Maybe I should just quit this stupid game! I didn’t make up that little story in the preceding paragraph; it really did happen. I did, however, make up Roger Long those emotional reactions to it. Oh, there was a time when those same hair-pulling thoughts did indeed run through my mind after humiliating defeats such as last night’s, but not anymore. You see, I’ve learned to rebound. Not as in basketball, but as in sucking it up and moving on. And that’s something all pool players need to learn if they are to stay in this game for very long. How do you go about learning to rebound? It’s easy! No it’s not - I’m pulling your leg again. Rebounding isn’t easy because it involves having to face some painful truths before you can begin to appreciate some of the positive truths. Let’s look at some of these truths. Painful Truth #1: There are players everywhere who are just as skillful as you. You may think you’re the only player in your area to have “X”-number years of experience, or to practice “X”-number of hours each week, but you’re not. Those other players are going to win their fair shares. Painful Truth #2: The breaker is in the driver’s seat. If you don’t break well, you can expect to get beat - sometimes very severely. Painful Truth #3: You are no more unlucky than the next player. Everyone plays on the same equipment, therefore both you and your opponents will get both good and bad rolls on poor tables, and no one will be able to control the cue ball with pinpoint precision every time. Sometimes, things will just happen the way they happen. No excuse will change that. Painful Truth #4: Good, consistent play requires good, consistent practice. Now, Positive Truth #1: You’re just as good a player today as you were last week, last month, or last year. Even a humiliating defeat now and then can’t change that. You’re just not bringing you’re A game every single time. But with some practice, you could be playing better again in no time. Positive Truth #2: No one with any level of intelligence is laughing at you. That’s because they know two things: 1) the situation isn’t funny, and 2) they know their turn is coming. Positive Truth #3: You have not lost any status with your friends and family because of your match defeat. They all still love and respect you and your game. They will probably respect you even more if they see you rebound from a bad loss, rather than sulking and pouting about it. Positive Truth #4: Pool is still just a game. It is not the end of the world when you lose. Every day brings forth new promise. The day after a bad loss should be the day you start rebounding. And one last thought: try to set aside your own pain and be happy for your opponent when he is successful against you. He should be genuinely congratulated. After all, didn’t he just beat one heck of a player?

A Pool Player’s Guide to Savvy Air Travel by: Samm Diep (c) March 2008

Tournament season is in full force and Vegas Nationals are just around the corner. With the soaring prices of fuel these days, more and more people are choosing to fly to events instead of drive. When flying, here are some useful tips for hassle-free traveling: As pool players, it’s safe to assume that if you’re flying to a tournament with your cues, you will be checking a bag, no questions. The days of carrying our cues on the plane are behind us. To make sure your cues arrive where you do, always get to the airport AT LEAST one hour prior to boarding. Depending on the airport, you may want to arrive even earlier.

CHECKING

IN

z If necessary, check with your airline to see if there’s a fee for checking a second piece of luggage (currently, United, US Samm Diep Airways, Northwest, and Delta are a few charging $25 for this). If you’re flying with with them, SammsPocket.com offers an assortment of oversized duffles that will hold both your cues and clothes together) z Make sure none of your bags are over 50 pounds. You could be assessed a charge for that too. z If you’re connecting, make sure you confirm your bags are checked in all the way to your final destination. z Check in online whenever possible. Just about every airline offers online check-in within 24 hours before your flight time. Even if you don’t have a printer, you can usually (re)print your boarding pass when you arrive at the ticket counter. z Have your photo ID out of your purse/wallet from the time you arrive at the airport until after you get through security. z If you checked in online, you still want to (re)confirm the departing gate number with the ticket agent after checking your bag(s). z Once you’ve checked your bag(s) in and they’re confirmed on the flight (the agent will let you know if you’ve checked in so late that it’s going to be questionable whether or not your bags make it on the plane) - Now, RELAX... You should still try to get to your gate on time, but don’t panic if the security line is a mile long. It’s unlikely that the plane will take off with your bags onboard but not your body. They will page you until you get to the gate.

z If you are susceptible to catching colds, make sure you take your Airborn and stock up on vitamin C and zinc approximately 2-24 hours prior to airport exposure. You may also want to carry anti-bacteria wipes with you. Keep your hands clean. Avoid unnecessary contact with your eyes, ears, and nose. Try to practice good basic hygiene.

GENERAL z Use a list when packing to help ensure you don’t forget anything before and after. z Clean out your pool case! You should consider doing this often anyway but it will definitely help reduce any unnecessary weight. Also, get change/ tokens at the tournament. This will also help keep the weight to a minimum. z Make sure you packed your extra chalk, tip tools, towel, and any other essential accessories. z Bring an extra bag. Find a lightweight duffle or backpack that can fold up and fit into your luggage. Be prepared in the event that your luggage is overweight or you bring some extras back with you. z Once you get to your terminal, check the gate assignment again before walking all the way there and realizing that it’s changed. z Try to wear pants/short with pockets. They come in handy. z If you need a pillow or blanket, make sure you grab one or ask for one as soon as you board. Supplies are usually limited. z Dress in layers. It can get chilly on the plane. z Dress comfortably. You’ll be sitting in whatever you’re wearing for the next couple hours, or longer. z Don’t forget to pack your music, books, games, pillow, snacks, and any other essentials. z And, of course, never leave your personal belongings unattended and always check to make sure you haven’t left anything behind where ever you stop. There you have it! Now you’re a savvy flyer. We’ll see you in Vegas! PLEASE BE SURE TO VISIT POOLTIPJAR.COM. You can take polls, view article archives, and read tournament and training updates. SECURITY z Try to wear comfortable, slip on shoes that are easy to remove. Please wear socks. z Have your boarding pass and ID out and ready when entering the security line. z Make sure you do not have any liquids/gels over 3 oz with you. z If you do, make sure they’re in a separate plastic zip-lock bag or use the ones provided. z Once your boarding pass and ID have been checked, put away your ID (you don’t need it again) but keep your boarding pass out. z Get your laptop out of its case and in a bin by itself. z Your shoes, belt, and jacket can go into a separate bin together. z Loose change, watches, keys, etc. can all go together in one of the smaller bins. z Make sure you zip up and secure all your bags before placing them on the conveyer belt. z Keep your boarding pass with you! z Do not walk through the metal detector until you see the last of your items enter the x-ray machine. Special Needs z If you suffer from motion sickness, make sure you take and pack (conveniently in a carry-on bag) your air sickness pills.

Pacific ACS 4th Annual Regional Championships The Pacific ACS Annual Championships has found a home in its second year at Little Creek Casino in Shelton Washington. The beautiful facilities, great food, friendly staff and fun competitors made for a great week of pool and memories for all to take home. We were pleased to be visited by John Lewis the ACS National Executive Director and thank him for his help with the tournament it was greatly appreciated. Also Don “Cheese” Akerlow brought the OTBnTV cameras to Little Creek so many of the finals matches are available at www.onthebreaknews.com along with pictures and an interview with John Lewis. As usual the scotch doubles events tend to give the biggest surprises and the open scotch delivered them as the team of Eric Sawyer and Carol Hartsell of nearby Olympia captured the open

scotch title. I am sure that it was the last thing on their minds going into the event that they would win but as play went on a definite buzz began. The point match was Eric and Carol against Mike Deveau and his partner Michelle Barkdoll playing out of Malarkey’s in Tacoma. It was a pitch battle for the point with Eric and Carol coming out on top. Then Mike and Michelle faced Jan Aust and John Evans to fight their way to a re-match. SNOHOMISH, WASHINGTON There is a great new pool hall with a warm inviting atmosphere, that opened about a month ago in Snohomish, Washington. It is Kornerpocket Billiardz and is owned and operated by Chase and Stephanie Howard. The pool hall is an extension of the full service billiard establishment they started in August of 2005. Kornerpocket Billardz is an established service company running three crews daily setting up, installing, moving, and recovering pool tables in the area. They have aligned themselves with various companies in the area and online businesses to install pool tables. Inside their 4500 square foot location they have six 8' and two 9' pool tables, along with an in house pro shop from which they not only sell cues and accessories, but will also sell you a pool table, game table and game room furnishings. Right now they are waiting on a lathe so they will soon be able to offer cue repair and conditioning. With one dart board and more planned for, the pro shop will also carry an assortment of darts, accessories and tips for their customer’s convenience. More plans are in the works, such as getting in some TV’s for the sports enthusiasts and possibly adding more tables or even building a stage. There is a jukebox, video games and full deli from which you can get full cut subs, soups and sandwiches. By the beginning of June, Chase and Stephanie

Thursday Night Closes SAN DIEGO CLASSIC With Fireworks! by Anne Craig - WPBA

Written by AHS Staff GLENDALE, AZ - Monday, 21 April 2008 Thursday Night division came to a close on the 17th and it was a nailbiter! With the top four teams battling it out at the Northern Lounge for a chance at 1st place his was going to be nothing short of specatular. Going into the last position night, the top 3 teams (Northern Lounge PLM, Knobby’s Lounge Asylum & Northern Lounge Bulldawgs) all had a chance to move up in the standing and take home a considerable increase in prize money. The Northern Lounge PLM went into position night able to take home the bacon, or even drop as low as 3rd place. The Asylum were in second and could take over 1st or drop to 3rd place. And the 3rd Place Bulldawgs could earn their way to second place with a big win over the Heavy Hitters of Alexanders and an Asylum loss. Despite all the scenario’s, PLM managed their first win over the Asylum keeping the 1st place trophy at the Northern Lounge, and the Heavy Hitters played spoiler by ending the Bulldawgs run for second place with a commanding 4-1 win. The Thursday Night division is filled with great people, great teams & great skill! I hope to see every next season! 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th

SUNDAY, APRIL 13TH, 2008 – VIEJAS CASINO The Finals ALLISON FISHER WINS THE 2008 SAN DIEGO CLASSIC Gerda Hofstatter’s valiant effort to come back from a 4-1 deficit was for naught, as Allison Fisher held steady to win the WPBA’s season opener at the Viejas Casino. It was a capacity crowd in the Dreamcatcher Theater; the lights were bright, the cameras were rolling, and both competitors were ready to give the crowd a great match. Allison won the lag, and in true form, broke and ran the first rack. Gerda broke in game 2 and made

two balls on the break, answering back with her own break and run. Both players seemed comfortable and in control. Game three saw Allison scratch on the break and Gerda with ball in hand, had an open table. Amazingly, she scratched the cue ball in the side pocket on the 3 ball after making it in the corner. Allison took advantage of the error and took the 21 lead. Gerda seemed shaken, and for the next few games, just couldn’t gain control of her emotions, missing a key 5 ball that would have tied the score and watching as Allison broke and ran in the 5th rack. Down 4-1, Gerda and Allison tangled with a monster safety battle on the 2 ball in the 6th game. Allison blinked first after 7 tries at the stubborn two ball, and Gerda ran out. Allison came up dry on the subsequent break, allowing Gerda to run out and the score was a much closer 4-3, Allison’s lead. To everyone’s horror, Gerda scratched off the 2 ball after she’d drawn the cue ball back dead into the lower corner pocket, attempting shape on the 3, and Allison easily ran out and her lead once again grew to 2 games. Game 10 saw a key point in this match. Gerda broke, made a ball, ran out to the 3 but missed a tough cut. Allison was left with a long cut shot and missed, leaving Gerda to make a great shot on it and allowing her to run to the 8 ball. Gerda had left herself a long cut down the side rail and her nerves got the better of her. She missed it and sold that game out to Allison. The two game swing definitely put the pressure squarely on Gerda’s shoulders to stay tough and focused. Game 11 began and would prove to be the coup-de-grace in this match. Allison broke but came up empty. Gerda’s 1 ball shot wasn’t easy and she missed it. Allison ran out to the 7 and promptly missed it, although she didn’t leave Gerda an open pocket. Gerda and Allison once again matched wits in a safety battle, with both locking up the 7 several times behind the 8 ball. Gerda blinked first, allowing Allison an open shot, running out to thunderous applause and taking the title of the first WPBA Event of the season. (WPBA continued on page 27)

WPBA 2008 STAT-KEEPING PLAYER SCORECARDS FOR EACH MATCH WILL PROVIDE VALUABLE STATISTICAL INFORMATION April 20, 2008 – Thousand Oaks, CA by Anne Craig – WPBA The WPBA’s 2008 Season marks the first full year that its players will use scorecards to produce accurate stats of their matches and tournaments. First used at the 2007 WPBA Tour Championships, the new scorecards include information such as lags won, balls on break, break and runs as well as games won on break. The 2008 San Diego Classic introduced players to the new scorecards and each player kept track of the stats for their match. Kristi Carter – WPBA Board Member and the person responsible for collating the stats from each tournament, feels the benefit to the players is immeasurable, “To be considered an upper-echelon sport, statistics need to be kept that are in depth and reliable. They are a major component to getting mainstream media coverage and it is a goal to position the WPBA as a viable and recognized professional sport. As players and fans, you will have the opportunity to track individual players’ performances, see how they pair against other players, and where they stand overall under various categories.” WPBA Top Pro and veteran match Commentator Dawn Hopkins feels strongly about stats, saying “As a commentator for WPBA/ESPN shows, having statistics is going to help me tremendously. These facts will enable me to compare the players in different areas of their game.” Actor and long-time WPBA Commentator Mitch Laurance states, “I've never been able to look to the statistics of players on the WPBA Classic Tour as a particular event week progressed; until now. What a terrific feature this will be, to have access to the kind of sports-related stats that mean so much when evaluating a player's performance during the heat of competition. The ability to analyze key stats throughout the event will help to further break down what makes different players successful, and I'm sure will prove an invaluable aid to telling the full story of any given Tour stop." Top WPBA veteran Pro Belinda Calhoun had this to say when asked. “Statistics have been so sorely missed in women's pool. What do all major sports have in common? Stats, stats, and more stats. Sports fans love statistics. It is a way for them to become personally involved. The more stats you can memorize and quote the higher the status you enjoy. The current score/stat sheet is a solid beginning for future plans to expand the stat program.” The WPBA will post stats from T.V. matches at each event, as well as track and post all our players’ statistics. Check back to www.wpba.com after each event for stat updates. Hard Times Billiards of Sacramento 5536 Garfield Ave Sacramento, CA

once again, Michael showed great skill in his safety play and shot making sending Justin to the other side. In the losers bracket Harold Griggs, who was sent there by Chuck Hassler, was proving to be a tough competitor. Harold quickly dispatched Greg Wilcox and Dex Lewis to face Kit Christopherson. This was a fine match with strong safety play by both men with Kit finally taking the set to face Chuck. Chuck was there after beating Ernie Johnson who was sent to the losers bracket by Greg Wilcox. Once there though, Ernie proceeded to beat Ray Comacho and Frank Rose to face Chuck. After some tough play by both players, Chuck finally sent Ernie to the showers and moved on face Kit. Again the games went back and forth with Chuck finally beating Kit and moving on to play Justin Barnes. In another battle royal, the two players went toe to toe and battled it out with Chuck prevailing to sink the final nine ball and take the match. By beating Kit, Chuck moved back to the winners side for a rematch with Michael for the finals. Since Chuck had one loss and Michael had none, Chuck had to beat Michael twice to win but after some discussion, both players agreed to a race to nine for the win and the first place finish. The final set was a see-saw battle with the lead going back and forth for several games. After a long day of play and with seven wins each, both players were showing signs of brilliance followed by lapses in focus. It could have gone either way but in the end Chuck prevailed to take the final game and the match. Houdini’s wants to thank all the players who participated and is looking forward to the next big Eight Ball tourney in September. See ad page 22 Houdini’s added $60.00 for a total purse of $420 Tournament results: 1st Chuck Hassler $220 2nd Michael Dodd $110 3rd Justin Barnes $60 4th Kit Christopherson $30
