The End Rail Produces a Great End Result! By Bill Smith “Mr3Cushion”, Old School Pool.net

WHILE A CONSIDERABLE majority of shots in 3-cushion billiards originate off a side rail, this time we're going to look at the effects of some shots that begin with a top rail. A fairly common occurrence in everyday play and even more so in championship play. This group of shots focuses on positioning the first object ball in the high-percentage scoring lanes, along the long cushions between the first and seventh diamonds, Diagram 1, (shaded areas). With this aspect in mind, our pri¬mary concern now becomes the speed of the first object ball and the English you impart to it. High Percentage Position Lanes Table Diagram 2 shows you a shot over¬looked by novice and intermediate players. This is actually an extremely effective position shot. Their mistake is to play off the left side Diagram 1 of the first ball for an extended short-angled path. It's very easy to make that way and fine if you only need one point to win. But, it offers no position opportunities for extending the inning. This is because the angle into the first ball does not provide the correct speed to position the ball for a predictable second shot. To play this type of shot properly, we go to the short rail, long rail and long rail again, sort of a plus-2 system shot, but with total control of the first object ball. You might think of it in pool terms as banking that first ball cross-side with the correct speed to keep it in the lane. Strike the cue ball with 11 o'clock English; a short slow stroke will keep the object ball from traveling too far. The end rail shot of Diagram 3 also presents an excellent opportunity for continuing a run. First, look at the angle and carom you'll need to bring the first ball back into that scoring lane (a short stroke is very helpful here). Then, apply the correct English, 1 o'clock to land on the third ball short (as we discussed last time) Diagram 3 so as not to knock it away from our second big target,

the comer. (By the way, I'm using the red ball as the first object ball in these examples to disprove the old theory that the only way you should play slow-to-the-third-ball is off the white ball first. It's just that in those cases you get a safety as a bonus.) The third end rail shot Diagram 4 is one that comes up repeatedly at all levels of play, so much so that your handling of it may well be the deciding factor in whether you win or lose. In this type of shot, always bank the first ball perpendicular to the long cushion with enough speed to land on the other long rail in your highpercentage scor¬ing Diagram 4 lane. The shot requires a crisp hit, hit with a short stroke and extreme 3 O'clock to land correctly i.e. Next to move the object ball into a better scoring zone can't be emphasized enough. Next to scoring itself, I consider this the next most important aspect of the game. Finally, in Diagram 5, we have a shot similar to the previous example except the second ball is positioned in the opposite corner. Still, we approach this shot with the same technique. Using more speed drives the first ball twice across the table to a prime scoring lane for the next shot. Especially, since the second ball is already positioned in the corner. Diagram 5 Remember, the primary objective here is to place the first ball in that highpercentage lane. Don't lose sight of that goal. The second ball is already just where you want it, in a big target zone. Use 2 o'clock English, and a normal stroke. Our cue ball must travel the length of the table three times, a good deal farther than the previous example. Many players approach end rail shots with little regard for the final resting place of the 3 balls. For one reason or another, too far to be that accurate, small target etc. the player is intimidated and timid. This is the result of a lack of knowledge concerning the basic fundamentals and stroke techniques that produce the desired results in various situations. With knowledge, you can overcome fear and your scoring will improve resulting from end rail position shots.

A Pool Player’s Guide to Savvy Air Travel

Tournament season is in full force and Vegas Nationals are just around the corner. With the soaring prices of fuel these days, more and more people are opting to fly to events instead of drive. When flying, here are some useful tips for hassle-free traveling: As pool players, it’s safe to assume that if you’re flying to a tournament with your cues, you will be checking a bag, no questions. The days of carrying our cues on the plane are behind us. To make sure your cues arrive where you do, always get to the airport AT LEAST an hour and a half prior to departure. Depending on the airport, you may want to arrive even earlier.

Checking in: • Most airlines currently charge a $20-25 fee to check your first bag and an additional fee for the second bag. If you haven’t already, you may want to invest in an oversized duffle that will fit both your cues and clothes together. [see SammsPocket.com for an assortment] • Make sure none of your bags are over 50 pounds. There’s typically a charge for that too. • If you’re connecting, confirm that your bags are checked all the way to your final destination. • Check in online whenever possible. Just about every airline offers online checkin within 24 hours before your flight time. Even if you don’t have a printer, you can usually (re)print your boarding pass when you arrive at the ticket counter to drop off your bag(s). • Have your photo ID in hand from the time you arrive at the airport until after you get through security. • If you checked in online, you still want to (re)confirm the departing gate number with the ticket agent after checking your bag(s). • Once you’ve checked your bag(s) and they’re confirmed on the flight – Now, RELAX… You should still try to get to your gate on time, but don’t panic if the security line is a mile long. It’s unlikely that the plane will take off with your bags on board without you. They’ll generally page you if they see that you’ve checked in. Security: • Try to wear comfortable, slip on shoes that are easy to remove. Please wear socks. • Have your boarding pass and ID out and ready when entering the security line. • Any liquids/gels over 3 oz must go in a separate plastic bag through security. • Once your boarding pass and ID have been checked, put away your ID (you don’t need it again) but keep your boarding pass available. • Get your electronics out and in a bin alone. • Your shoes, belt, and jacket can go into a separate bin together. • Cell phone, loose change, watch, keys, etc. can all go together in one of the smaller bins. • Make sure you zip up and secure all your bags before placing them on the conveyer belt. • Keep your boarding pass with you! • Do not walk through the metal detector until you see the last of your items enter the x-ray machine. Special Needs: • If you suffer from motion sickness, make sure you take and pack (conveniently in a carry-on bag) your air sickness pills. • If you are susceptible to catching colds, make sure you take your Airborn and stock up on vitamin C and zinc approximately 2-24 hours prior to airport exposure. o You may also want to carry anti-bacteria wipes with you. o Keep your hands clean. o Avoid unnecessary contact with your eyes, ears, and nose. o Try to practice good basic hygiene. General: • Use a list when packing to help ensure you don’t forget anything before and after. • Clean out your pool case! You should consider doing this often anyway but it will definitely help reduce any unnecessary weight. Also, get change/tokens at the tournament. This will also help keep the weight to a minimum. • Bring an extra empty bag. Find a lightweight duffle or backpack that can fold continued on page 13

Last time I urged you to master a shot that requires maximum spin. The month, the problem is to avoid side spin. Shot 1 is a common problem for C most players -- you need to hit the object ball nearly full and get out to the middle of the table and the shot is nearly straight in. If your opponent left you in this situation, he’s given you a good test. If you left this for 2 yourself, you probably made a A mistake. The two major hurdles are B the unnatural bridge required and Shot 2 the need to hit the ball fairly firmly for position. First, let’s work on your bridge. Shot 1 Many players would use an open bridge for this kind of shot, with their 1 fingers tips on the rail and most of their hand in the air. If you can make a firm, solid bridge that way, you can skip the next part. The drawing, which is from Clive Cottingham’s book, “The Game of Billiards,” shows how to make a fist bridge. It’s simple, solid and easy to make for people who are just learning how form a closed bridge. It’s shown on the bed of the table, where it’s most useful for draw shots, but if you put it up on the rail, it forms a good platform for shooting stuck-to-the-cushion shots. Among other features, the fist bridge will encourage you to use a short backswing which helps to reduce unintended side spin. Make sure there is no daylight between your fingers and the shaft -- you may need to clean your hand and/or your stick to get smooth action. While working on Shot 1, start simple and easy. Try to get the cue ball only as far as the side cushion. Pay attention to fundamentals: Do you come straight through on the shot? Do you avoid putting side spin on the cue ball? Do you stay down? Is your solid bridge still in position when the cue ball comes to rest? Are you using just enough elevation to avoid miscuing? Have you chalked? Gradually build up speed but don’t let your pocketing percentage drop much. Set a distance goal and if you can do it three times in a row, set a harder goal. To work some more on the upper end of your speed range, try Shot 2 which gives you more margin for error. It is also useful as a fall-back if you are not able to master Shot 1. The first goal is to leave the cue ball within a hand-span of A. Next, crank up the speed and try to go twice across the table to B. If that’s too much at first, set intermediate goals. Finally, you will need to be able to add side spin. Can you get to C? Using both side and follow from the cushion is both deceptive and difficult. Because the cushion forces you to use elevation, the cue ball will curve more due to the side spin. Also, because you are using follow, the curve will take sooner than for most English shots. With all the possibilities of angle, distance and spin, this is a shot you will need to revisit as your over-all game improves.

NITEHAWK MEMORIAL 9-BALL TOURNAMENT Honoring Bill Mildenberger and Dave Reavis By Judy Griffith, Tournament Director

defeated by Eddie Mataya 7 to 1. On Saturday, Glenn Atwell was defeated by Bob Olsen 7 to 6. One of the more exciting players to watch was Cindy Sliva. She was defeated in the first round by Mike Stevens 7 to 5, but managed to fight her way back to two places out of the money by defeating Al Perez and Steve Hay. Great job Cindy! I would like to thank Bill Mildenberger, Jr. and the staff and the Nitehawk for helping to make this tournament a success. The Nitehawk gave travel mugs out to all the participants in the tournament, and Paul “The Brat” Marquez, wrote a wonderful article about Bill, Sr. and Reavis. As tournament director, I love doing this tournament. The players all conduct themselves with such sportsmanship and class. They truly help to make it a gentlemen’s game, and act accordingly. Sure makes things a whole lot easier for everyone, and I thank you all very much.

What a line up for this tournament with the likes of Stan Tourangeau, Bobby Zack, Glenn Atwell, Dan Louie, Eddie Mataya, Bill Rosenberry, Jesse Allred, and Pat Schumacher, just to name a few. It was a tough field and made for an exciting tournament. With a winner break format, the anticipation was high that we would see the players string racks together. This was the one thing that Bill loved to see, and Reavis hoped to do. However, most of the matches were quite close. There were surprises and upsets throughout the tournament. The first surprise came in the first round on Friday night when Dan Louie was defeated by Matt Horner 7 to 3, and Bobby Zack was

TWO MEN By Paul Marquez

Welcome to this annual tournament that honors two men. Two men, who through their friendship, taught us about bravery, loyalty and respect. The Night Hawk is without a doubt Portland’s pool players favorite bar. A claim even, though players are sometimes considered to be risky business. The Night Hawk thinks of players differently. A fearless approach, the Night Hawk’s way since Bill has owned it. Risky didn’t scare Bill. So you gamblers, drinkers and pool players, ho hum. Come on in. Fearless and smart was cause for a complete success, a success for the community, the patrons and the owner’s. These characteristics of Bill and The Hawk, continues to shine with his son running the show. A welcoming to us risky patrons still remains. It’s still our bar. We feel wanted, appreciated and loved because Bill cared about pool players. He accepted the losers, the misfits, and hustlers. You can attempt to hang out with these types when you fear nothing I suppose. For those who didn’t know Bill, picture a tough old bird, longshoremen and a man of his word. He reminds me of an ex-boxer who still comes by to see what’s happening. Young boxers hoping this man takes interest in them, maybe drop a hint of knowledge in passing. You cared about what he thinks of you. Then there was Dave. Now Reavis was a competitive, talented nice guy. Rarely will you find this. An unassuming man, until he played pool. A pool table was all he needed to transform into a force to be reckoned with. This type of person Bill admired. A humble godzilla is a rare breed. Bill trusted Dave and Dave trusted Bill. They shared a mutual respect. This was obvious to all of us. Together they were lively. These boys were serious friends and offered players some serious action. Just ask. Bill and Dave were good action,

Many who challenged a Scotch partners game against them occasionally became ex-partners shortly after. Al Perez and myself can confirm their good play. It cost us 500 dollars. As players, Bill played better than most people understood. National runner up Tyler Luce from Seattle won a B tournament in Beaverton years ago and went home busted without his cue playing Bill even. I know Tyler and he has tons of class and Bill agreed. He recalls that Tyler came back for his cue and paid off his debt. That’s another trait Bill had. He beats Tyler. He’s not supposed to. It’s an underdog victory but he only mentions Tyler’s class act, admirable. When Bill played with Dave he was unstressed. He knew his mistakes will most likely be forgiven with Dave’s high level play. His pro level game and understanding helped put Bill in line. Did I mention Dave’s break. KABOOM!!!” Only Eddie Mataya’s break resembles Dave’s break from what I have seen in the Pacific Northwest. Sadly Eddie never witnessed Dave’s play, or appreciated Bills heart and gamble. This is a shame. Portland pool took a punishing blow when Dave passed. I will always remember Bill as the toughest guy I knew talking about how hard it was to lose Dave. This heartfelt communication was unexpected to hear but its impact on me was enlightening to me shortly after. Bill’s loss was crippling. When Bill passed it was unexpected. We felt everything would be fine. You see Bill, like I said was tough. His death unexpected, but quickly accepted. Why? A strange rumor made pool players feel stronger. The pool players would say in jest that Bill missed his friend Dave. And in jest it was said that Bill most likely felt it was time to find his best buddy. To catch up on things, play some golf, gamble a little or watch a ball game. This was like I said, said in jest, but in actuality, embraced. This is how I remember things. The Night Hawk holds many memories for me. Good ones. I hope this tournament is memorable for you.

Pete Gates won the Easter Sunday 14.1 Tournament at Sam's Billiards in Portland, despite losing in the first round to David Randell. David came from behind in that match and closed on a monster run of 58. But David lost to Sam who made it into the finals with the same 2 win, 1 loss record as Pete, both getting 41 balls on their loss. No one made it through the first round without a loss in the three groups of four players. Since only four players advanced to the finals and 6 players had only one loss, a couple of players were eliminated on points with their one loss. Paul Marquez lost to yours truly, despite running 27 in the match, but I lost to Tasha Hook by a larger margin in the first match. And Tasha's only loss was by a larger margin to Paul, so Paul advanced. Frank Kincl and Don West had two wins in the first round, but Frank advanced on points. The Bozeman, Montana City League Tournament was held April 8-11, 2010 to determine which teams will represent Rocky Mountain Gaming during the 2010 VNEA International Championships in Las Vegas in May. This tournament was held at the Molly Brown in Bozeman. The Bozeman VNEA Leagues has always been about winning the tournament at the end of league to win the trip to Las Vegas. The team that wins gets their entry paid into the team event, their hotel paid, and travel money besides winning money from the tournament itself. This has always been an honor to the teams that you win your expenses paid. You can always go in singles or as a team if you desire to but most do not. Having Rocky Mountain Gaming pay the teams way has been the ultimate prize and the spoils of the league season. The Bozeman City tournament sends two teams with their expenses paid. We would like

Cole Wins at The Cue Ball It was a great weekend of pool on April 17-18th, as the Cue Ball hosted its 10th event in as many years for the NWPA. The room houses 21 9-foot Centennial and Anniversary Brunswick tables, 2 10-foot French, heated snooker tables, 1 3 cushion, and 1 pro-8 Brunswick. The room also hosts a monthly 9 ball tournament on the 2nd Saturday of the month. Along with the $500 added by The Cue Ball, new tour sponsor BDA also added $500, making this a $1000 event. 29 ladies, representing 5 different states, turned out to compete for the purse including 4 new players to the tour: Jenny Sheldon and Bonnie Danel from Ocean Park, WA, Jill Wagner from Moscow, ID and Bonnie Russell from Astoria, OR. The NWPA wanted to extend a warm welcome to tour regulars and newcomers for the second stop of its 10th season. Eight ladies returned on Sunday in the main event. The A-side matches included Liz Cole vs. Eve Stockstill and Jackie Karol vs. Shelby Locati while the B-side matches included Mikki Small vs. Kit Dennis and June Maiers vs. Andrea Saenz-Maes. Both Liz (7-3) and Shelby (7-6) would advance through their morning matches to play for the point, which Liz won 7-4. Mikki and Andrea both lost their morning matches respectively (7-3 and 7-5) to finish tied for 7th/8th. Nice job ladies. Finishing tied for 5th/6th were Kit Dennis and Jackie Karol (7-4 and 7-5). June then came through over Eve 7-1 to square off against Shelby, whom she then defeated in a hill-hill nail biter to play in her first final since 2008. This was Shelby’s strongest event yet, congratulations on a great tournament. The Final: Liz Cole vs. June Maiers was one race to 9, alternating break, with all ball foul format and 3 foul in effect. The set started off somewhat shaky for both

players as it seemed they were trying to feel each other out. They traded racks for the first four games to leave the score tied at 2-2. Smart play by Liz and a couple of uncharacteristic misses by June resulted in Liz taking the next

3 racks to take a 5-2 lead. A scratch late run in game 8, gave June ball in hand with only the 8 and 9 to play, which she ran out (5-3). Liz then would take advantage of every opportunity afforded by June’s more defensive style of play to take the next 3 racks to reach the hill first. Down 8-3, June engaged Liz in a safety battle of the wits for the next two games, which she won to bring the set to 8-5. Luck, however, was not on June’s side. With the break in game 14, June broke dry leaving a wide open table. Liz pocketed the 1, 2, and 3, but ran into the 5 ball pocketing the 4. Three back to back safeties left June kicking at the 5 ball, 2 rails. June made a good hit, but then scratched in the opposite corner. With ball in hand, Liz ran out the rack to take her first title of the 2010 NWPA season.

Congratulations Liz for going undefeated in the event, her path to the final included wins over Julie V. (6), Kimberly K. (6), Cindy S. (2), Eve S. (3), and Shelby L. (3). And kudos to June making it back to the final after losing her second match to Kit Dennis (7-6). She then went on to defeat several regular tour players to earn her place in the final including Elaine E. (6), Suzanne S. (3), Cindy S. (5), Jackie K. (4), Eve S. (1), and Shelby L. (6). $200 Added Second Chance event started at noon on Sunday and 12 ladies returned to compete. With a race to 3 format and alternating break, tournament play was concluded prior to the final of the main event final. Cindy Sliva bested all the ladies coming through to take the hot seat, and ultimately ended up splitting 1st and 2nd place funds with Natalie Seal so she could make the drive back to Tacoma. Thanks to Chris Rogers and Ford for another smoothly executed event, Tamre and Adrianne Beach for running the Live Stream (along with competing for Adrianne, who had her strongest finish of her career tied 13-16th), and again The Cue Ball and Jim LeBold for being gracious hosts as always, providing snacks and coffee, and continuing to provide a pleasant atmosphere that all of the ladies have come to enjoy. Don Adams Wins Spring Session 15-Rack 10-Ball Pool Leagues finished there spring session of league. League ran from February 7thApril 12th, 2010. Nearly 40 new league players played in this record-breaking session. At the end of the 10-week session the player with the most points became the session’s grand prizewinner. Don Adams from Charlie’s Billiards came out on top winning by 12-points ahead of Matt Driste, becoming the spring session grand champion. Don won a custom Jacoby 15-Rack pool cue, a custom Delta-13 15-Rack rack, and the top six finishers won free entries into the April 17th-18th CSI US 10-Ball qualifier that was held at the Wynkoop. If a 15-rack player had won that main event- the league would have paid for their airfare to the Las Vegas. The top six qualifying players were: 1st place Don Adams, 2nd place was Matt Driste, 3rd place Bret Banwart, 4th place Scott Smith, 5th place Michael Prewitt, and 6th place Douglas Labout. The top-2 ladies were Kathy Crump and Chris Honeman whom qualified for paid entries into the biggest ladies event ever in Colorado- The 2010 WPBA Amateur National Championships to be held at the Wynkoop Brewing Company-November 19th-21st, 2010. We had a great turn out for the WorldPPA's Shootout and its first major tournament April 17 & 18, 2010. There were 121 paid entries! The tournament started on time at Noon on Saturday; Chris Swart (California Billiard Club owner) and I managed the tournament well together; by 9:30 PM we were down to 32 players (16 winners side and 16 loser side players). Sunday, the 2nd day of the tournament picked up where it left off and finished up at 1:20 AM Monday morning. Both Chris and I were in attendance for the whole 23 hours of tournament play. I have a new appreciation of all that a tournament director does! :) I'd like to point out to you that the WorldPPA has NO connection to the USPPA or Tony Annigoni. This is my own event, so please don't make any

Many players came up to the desk to say thank you for such a great tournament. Pat Flemming was in the area, heard about the great turn out and stopped by to see it firsthand. Pat said it was incredible to have such a huge turn out for a 1st tournament. A quarter of the field (32 places) were paid $3,220 with $1,000 going to 1st. Colin was on fire and with a 2 game spot to 8, it was too big a hill for Deo to climb. The final score was 8 to 4. We tried something new at the tournament that worked out very well. One table was set aside as a dedicated Fargo table where players (in groups of 10) signed up for $5 to try to see how many points they could earn, based on whether they ran them sequentially or randomly (1 point for random and 2 points for rotation). A, B & C players received a certain amount of bonus points and who ever earned the highest points received $40 with $10 going to the house for green fees. This is something the players really like; we've been doing Fargo at the regular weekly tournaments and I'm keeping statistics and using the data for evaluating handicaps. Holly Ryan defeated Melinda Huang in the finals of the 1st Annual Western Women's Charity 9-Ball Challenge to support the Shade Tree Women's Shelter held at Rum Runner Tropicana April 3-4th, 2010. Melinda, coming from the loser's side of the bracket needed to win 2 sets against Holly. Melinda won the first one, but couldn't quite close the deal and Holly won the 2nd set to claim 1st place. The tournament drew 32 players from Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Kingman, Phoenix and more. Sondra Friestad and Christy Robertson both played extremely well throughout the tournament. Becky Bowen's performance was outstanding ultimately taking 3rd place. Sunny MELINDA HUANG Griffin is always a strong player. Jen Engels was frustrated most of the time. Anne Martinez and Rhonda Murray were not at the top of their games suffering from allergies and head colds. Christina Kolkhorst kept us on the edge of our seats with some great playing. And doing well in this tournament was not in the cards for the VBB girls Nicole and Amy. But everyone had such a great time and we can't wait for next year!

I met Glenn Atwell in the early nineties and befriended him in the late nineties. During that period of time Glenn as a player figured something out while practicing and soon after began his legend. Glenn's legend or story is constantly growing in my community of players . But Glenn, his legend and story has just begun. Some people have great achievements occur outside or without a title or a check attached to it. Paul Marquez Glenn is more than a local player with skill. The bottom line is Glenn is our best player. By far. He also improved after 50 years of age. Remarkable. Well not that remarkable if you know him. Glenn is dedicated. He wins on the road and is considered one of the best bar table players in the world. He actually plays all tables, and all games well. I haven't witnessed many. Glenn's moments that most would consider remarkable, like The Reno Bar Box two years ago. Or even any moments that may have meant a lot to him. But for me, like most pool player's around here, Glenn gives us something to remember. Some particular Glenn events for me I would like to share. The year 1994 ish. Shortly after winning the US Amateur National Championship a road player known as Mexican Johnny came through town barbecueing people one handed. Seriously . One handed. My turn closing and employed with keys to Sheehans Chalk and Roll I watched Glen rob Johnny at nine ball while the Mexican Hustler robbed him back at one pocket. Both needed weight in the others game of choice. The weight either 9 to 7 playing one hole or the 7 and the breaks playing nine ball did not matter. Both were unbeatable in their field. Glen offered the 6 at one point. Johnny refused. Johnny with his stakehorse kept going to their car for a" powder break" while Glen who is drug free battled until early the next morning. They broke even. That's when I learned about heart. Years later I understood how good Mexican Johnny was . He was a great nine ball player. Glen was better. Other memorable moments I have been noticing is how other champions react to Glenn. 1998 ish An all time favorite pool moment cast a player with beautiful stroke , and amazing energy. This classy player named John Bear came to Portland and played in a tournament at Classic Billiards here in Portland. Bears complete focus was on Glenn after losing to Atwell. Everytime Glenn walked anywhere John Bear shook his cue towards Glenn playfully no matter how involved Bear was in a current match. It was as if he knew nobody was left to fear until they would meet again in the finals. As Bear skillfullly predicted it, it was Bear and Glenn again. It was Glenn who defeated the awesome personable John Bear. That weekend or moments kept me in pool when I considered quitting. I instead had incentive or a reason to take pool more seriously as a player. It was hard, it was exciting and most of all fun. I lightened up as a player, especially in tournaments. Quintessential moment without a doubt. Fast forward now to 2001 ish. Paul Potier and Stan Torangeau were playing for the point at a tournament and arrived together after stepping out for food some where. They both rushed over together to read the loser bracket . I noticed and asked Stan what was up . Stan laughed and said "to see where Glenn is of course !" This moment taught me that the neighborhood local pool champion was someone formidable. To learn from as well as pay close attention too. It secured the notion that he's the real deal. The next decade of success proved the same realization for the nation. So Now ish. The little things. Every pool event in Portland has people mentioning Glenn in some way. Although winning is a priority Glenn is a welcome face to Portland tournament goers. We want to play him, be coached by him and earn his respect. Sometimes to be honest we want to send him home early. Which is unfair really since no matter the odds of him being beat in the finals of a small tournament, Glenn chooses to split the dough . A kind gesture as to say to the other finalist "Good job, you played well enough to win this tournament so you deserve it." In case nobody ever says it " Thanks for chopping Glenn. Your successes lately are amazing and we really want you to keep it up. Your our horse. Giddyup!! Thanks for all the advice and you know deep down in my heart, with respect. I hope to learn , and continue to admire your play . Oh and of course hopefully drill you soon. Paul

On Ratings And Conspiracies By Roger Long, Advanced Certified Instructor

Why is it that whenever we lose, we always have to put the blame on someone, or something, other than ourselves? Come on, you know that’s true. Pool players are the biggest excuse makers in the world. We think our losses are never our own fault! In my neck of the woods (that’s redneck talk for, “where I live”) we have a rating system for tournament players that is about as well structured as baby poop. I say that because all of the ratings here are Roger Long arbitrarily assigned without any stats ever being compiled. In other words, it is purely an opinion-based method. This situation naturally draws criticism from many players who believe that the people who assign the ratings are prone to favoring some players while penalizing others. This is a common occurrence where no accountability exists. But what about the large national organizations who assign ratings based on stats and scores? Do they experience internal conflict because of their ratings? Let me answer that for you. Yes, they do. There are charges and counter charges of sandbagging and discrimination taking place all the time. Why is that? Let’s see if we can put this on a more instructional level by taking a closer look at the problem. Many players are of the opinion that they are qualified to rate themselves and other players because they have been playing for “X” number of years. But you have to suspect flaws

in their judgment when you hear them say things like, “That player should be rated B instead of C because there is no C on earth that can make the shot he just made.” Or things like, “Your B-player just beat my A-player, so I think it’s time to raise your player’s rating.” Sound familiar? It should, because it’s the kind of “logic” that’s used all the time whenever certain people discuss ratings. Now let’s look at this problem in a little different light. There are always going to be days when D players play like C’s, and C’s play like B’s, and B’s play like A’s. Conversely, there will always be days when those same B’s will play like C’s, and the C’s will play like D’s, and the D’s will play like F’s. So what any good organization does is track each player’s stats until they arrive at a solid average. Once that average is established, it’s probably going to take more than one or two good nights − or someone’s unqualified opinion − to boost that level any higher. As a youngster I used to watch boxing on TV with my dad, and he would tell me, “Son, there are sluggers and then there are boxers. Just because a person can make tough shots, doesn’t necessarily mean he or she is a good pool player. There are many factors involved in properly assessing players’ skill levels, and most league owners are very diligent to employ them all. If there are any conspiracies to “get” certain players, those conspiracies most likely exist only in those players’ heads.

BEF JUNIOR NATIONALS HEADS TO NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) is excited to announce that Northern Illinois University (NIU) will host the 22nd Annual Junior National 9-Ball Championships on July 7 -11, 2010. The Huskies Den in the Holmes Student Center, located on the NIU campus in DeKalb, IL, has seventeen (17) 9-foot billiard tables that will be the stage to an expected 150 young billiard athletes. Junior players will be competing for scholarships, prizes and an invitation to represent the United States at the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World Junior 9-Ball Championships. To participate in the BEF Junior Nationals, players must earn an entry through a BEF qualifier or must be appointed by their local junior league. The national event features 4 divisions: 19 & Under Boys, 19 & Under Girls, 14 & Under Boys, and 14 & Under Girls. Qualifiers will be held throughout the United States through the month of June. The BEF is accepting nominations and offering player invitations for the girls’ divisions. They come in handy. • If you need a pillow or blanket, make sure you grab one or ask for one as soon as you board. If they’re available, supplies are usually limited. • Dress in layers. Airplanes can get chilly. • Dress comfortably. The Billings BCA Pool League completed its 12th year with a great season ending tournament and a terrific awards night. We honored 3 first time Most Valuable players, a first time winner of the league team championship, crowned a champion of our first MVP tournament and honored a member of our league with a prestigious new award. What a year! The first session of our league consisted of two leagues playing 15 weeks and the top two teams had to play well in very competitive leagues. The Blue League had 3 Sports Page teams finishing within 5 games and taking the top 3 spots. The Gold league was also very competitive and came down to the last night of play with only 2 games separating the top three teams. Regular season champion teams and players are listed below. In the second session we had 4 divisions with teams placed by their first session results. The A League had the regular season champs finish one, two and third went to the team that ended up winning the league tournament. Excellent play by three good teams of quality players. The B â&#x20AC;&#x201C; D Leagues were also very competitive and all players had a lot of fun finishing the season. The League tournament had a great turnout and was an exiting event. Many upsets and a lot of very close matches, many decided by a ball or two. Bullwackers,

the 1145 Club, The VFW and The American Legion were great hosts and made this a very nice event. The Sports Page captained by Tom Barrett came through the losers bracket to claim the league title defeating the team from Shooters, captained by Bob DeRoeck, twice to claim their first league title. The finished second the first session, third in the A League and persistence paid of in the league tournament as the team all played very well. This was the initial year of our MVP tournament were we qualified only the top 32 players in the league in a two day double elimination tournament. All the best players in Billings were there playing some great pool. It was a bit of an honor just to qualify. We had a great tourament hosted By Kings Korner and played for Two Thousand dollars in price money. Jim Winter played awesome, and had to, in route to the championship not losing a match. Terry Bummer was the runner up and also had to play well to get where he did. Our Most Valuable playersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; races were very competitive and all the winners had to play well up to the last game to win, and they did. First time MVPs were Roland Barnes, Steve Lesmeister and Lori Warnell. Jonella Staus claimed her fourth MVP award. Runners up winners were Dan Bummer, Tom Milkiewicz, Val Weber and Sue Miller. The highlight of our awards night was unquestionably the presentation of a new award, which will be presented every year to one individual, The Harold Zeiler Heart Award. This award will be presented each year to one league member who represents the spirit of Harold Zeiler by playing with sportsmanship, competitiveness and compassion. Cancer took Harold from us this year but his spirit and memory will always be with us with this award. This is the highest honor our league can bestow on any player and the recipient is truly a special person. The 2010 Harold Zeiler Heart Award Recipient is Randy Sayre. THE BLONDE CHALLENGE:

It all started as an innocent 9 Ball challenge... Race to 7 ahead. Sounded simple enough, right? Add some "color" to the event... Loser goes blonde. Before long, some Q-Spot customers said it should be posted, so folks could know when to come watch. So, posters were placed around the pool hall and everyone talked about the challenge with curiosity. Saturday, April 24th... The day of the great challenge arrived. So did a few extra onlookers. Most folks occupied a pool table and watched from across the room, occasionally checking on the progress. Jimmy was up first. He made the 9 ball on the break. What a way to start a challenge! Everyone assumed the challenge might take 3 or 4 hours, so they hung around to watch. As the evening wore on, it became clear the two men were not taking this challenge lightly. Jimmy would pull ahead by 3, 4 or even 5 games, only to have Gene pick up speed and reduce the difference back to one or two games ahead. At closing time, seeing no end to this match anytime soon, the guys decided whoever reached 50 games first would win the match, if no one had made the 7 ahead goal before then. That discussion must have given Gene some extra wind, as he pulled out from 4 behind and won the next 11 games, to claim the match at 41-34. In the end, there were a total of 75 games played in 6 hours, 40 minutes. Interestingly, the very first game of the match was won with a 9 on the break and the last game was won with a 9 on the break. Jimmy's last words of the night were, "Gene, I'm calling you back out." They are already working up ideas for the next match. This is only the beginning of a new era for Q-Spot Billiards in Tulsa, as more fun events are expected over the next few months, beginning with a Thursday night Beginner / Intermediate Fun league for 3 man teams, sponsored by Q-Spot Billiards and Crown Cues. The concept is to help those who are new to the game or returning to the game learn the rules and strategies used in today's pool games. Weekly fees are only $3 per person (which covers green fees) with a party and trophies planned at the end of the season.

3rd Annual Platte Valley Open Pool Tournament Saratoga, Wyoming April 2nd â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 4th For the 2nd year in a row, the local roads were closed Friday morning before the tournament, and the tournament was help during Easter Sunday. This didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem to matter, the tournament grew again this year. There were 165 players this year (compared to 123 in 2009; 111 in 1008). The tournament was expanded to downtown Saratoga. In years past, we played on 17 tables at the Platte Valley Community Center. This year we played on a total of 30 tables; 16 at the Community Center, and 14 tables were spread out at the downtown bars. The tournament was played using UPA rules. Cheese and Mary travelled to Saratoga this year to provide online streaming. OTBnTV. com is the site to go to for this kind of event.

The pool players enjoyed this added feature and the locals really liked the extra exposure. Notable players from a long distance were: Glenn Atwell, Kirbie Predmore & Eddie Mataya from Washington, Frank Alvarez & Darrin Brown from Arizona Raj Hundal from London, Rodney Morris from Hawaii 27 of the 54 Masters players competed in a 9-ball tournament downtown on Friday night. The $300 that was going to be added to a Sunday hardluck was added to this bracket instead; entry fee was $50. The format was race to 5 alternate break, heads up. Rodney Morris and Mark Haddad ended up in the final and split to $575 each. Dave Gross and Bobby Bejay tied for 3rd, which paid $314 each. Tony Weert, Eddie Mataya, Aaron Westcott & Raj Hundal tied for 5th. The locals really enjoyed the treat of watching this caliber of pool! The Sportsman division started Friday night at 6. $700 was added with a $25 entry fee and a $25 green fee.

This is race to 3, heads up. This division was expanded from 32 to 48 players this year, all 48 spots were filled. This was the only division where the 1 loss player beat the “rocking chair” in the opening match of the Finals. Eloisa Martinez beat Robert Peach 3-0. Robert Peach followed up in the next match winning 3-0 for the 1st place $600 prize. All 8 of the finalists move up to the Classic division for next year. The Classic division started Friday night at 8. $2,000 was added with a $50 entry fee and a $30 green fee. This is race to 4, heads up. The division was expanded from 32 to 48 players this year. One month before the event, we realized that we had to expand all the way to 64 players. We were full with a waiting list for a long time. One cancellation on Friday night caused us to move forward with 1 bye. The only player to defeat BC Gonzales all weekend was Andrew Kendrick. The final score was 4-1; Andrew claimed 1st and that prize was increased to $1,500 with the extra players. The

top 4 players move up to the Masters division for next year. The Masters division started Saturday morning at 8. $7,000 was added with a $100 entry fee and a $35 green fee. This is race to 6, heads up. The division has always been open to 64 players, 54 players made it this year. The weather did cost us a few entries, Easter was another factor. This year seemed to be Rodney’s year from the beginning. Two different players scored a 4 against him (Mark Haddad and myself), otherwise, the best score was a 3. Rodney beat Glenn 6-2 in the match for the rocking chair. The final score was 6-3. Very impressive to watch these two compete! The only real difference was that Glenn had 2 dry breaks. Looks like we will have to add another row of 6 balls behind the rack for these 2 next year, no division to move them up to! This was a really fun event and we intend to make it bigger and better every year. I am always amazed at the amount of great pool talent that travels to Saratoga Wyoming to play pool. Next year’s event will again be on the first weekend of April, but Easter is not a conflict this time. Thank you to everyone that made it to Saratoga this year. The Diablo Valley Pool League joined The Farrington’s Bar staff on March 21st for another Women’s 8 Ball tournament, the leagues third this season, which had an excellent turnout of 25 players. We had the pleasure of having our friends from Emeryville attend the event, including the now Pro player Eleanor Callado, who actually ended up winning the event. The league had set up bounty of $30 per head on our top local guns, Shawn Modelo and Leslie Armstrong, who had won the previous two events. Congratulations to Leilani, one

of our new players this year who showed signs of excellency by taking veteran Leslie Armstrong out of the event, without realizing the significance of her win. Her and El took the first bounty for $30 dollars. The second bounty went to champ Eleanor Callado who met up on the fight for the catbird seat with ace Shawn Modello, beating her and sending her to the looser side, and again meeting her at the end of the event meeting her again to win the event. It was an afternoon of fun; we saw some of the old faces like Tiffany Walker who has been out of the scene for a while. We

witnessed some great defense from players who shocked themselves and at the same time showed that their confidence and skills continue to build. Our women are in the final stretch in preparation to the upcoming National 8-ball amateur tournament coming up this May in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Riviera. The league has held three women’s tournaments thus far and will hold their last one in April, before traveling to the Nationals. The league is encouraging all women to participate for the

practice, the challenge, the prize money and the glory of the bounty. Congratulations to all the participants for coming out to measure up with some of the best from Emeryville and Concord, it shows that we are on the right path of mastering the game of pool.

Diablo Valley Mixed Open Winter Season

The Diablo Valley Pool league brought yet another successful end to their Mix Open Winter Session 09-10 this past March 30th after 24 weeks of continuous play. All teams gathered at Vinnie’s Bar for another outrageous pay out of $17,552 to be distributed to all teams. It was a season for 21 Teams, 24 Weeks of play, big Bay Area names such as: Jason Williams, Marshall Williams, Bee Davison, Holly Robinson, Billy Palmer, Rick Chudy, new sponsor Jim from Bar None with two new teams. This league continues to grow in number of sponsors, teams, and the level of play ability. One thing this league can guarantee is that if you join you will improve the knowledge of the game and your ability to execute it. Let’s take a minute to thank Billy Palmer and Bee Davison, two veterans of the game, who gladly shared tips with everyone and showed always kindness and great sportsmanlike attitude. Holly’s Team stood strong throughout the season but had the challenge of overcoming the handicap (capped at 25 balls max) that they were giving to other teams which in the end they were able to overcome. 10- Ball at the Golden Fleece On April 10-11 the 10-ball qualifiers for the U.S open 10-ball championship was held in the beautiful action room Golden Fleece in Kenmore, WA (north of Seattle). 43 players showed up to vie for the $1,000 first place prize money plus air fare to the U.S. Open 10-Ball Championships in Las Vegas. The tournament paid 12 places. It was Marc Vidal (from Brooklyn, New York) taking the hot seat from the winner's side. In the meantime, local favorite Todd Marsh - was making quick work of all his opponents in the loser's side by displaying great heart, determination and focus. At the end, an exciting showdown unfolded in the finals between Vidal and Marsh. Marsh took what seemed to be a sufficient lead on Vidal, going ahead 5-2. But Vidal tied it up at 5 apiece quickly, then went ahead 7-5. After some tactical safeties, and a couple of uncharacteristic misses from Marsh, Vidal extended his lead to 3 games, 8-5. Marsh composed himself and made it 8-7, then Vidal won the next game making it 9-7. Vidal was on his way to closing out the final the next rack and after a good run he found himself lined up to a pretty easy 7-10 combination. Unexpectedly Vidal missed it and Marsh cleared out the table making it 9-8. Team CSI - Deuel and Strickland Head to Hard Times and Showboat

Team CSI-American Grand Master members Corey Deuel and Earl Strickland will be performing exhibitions and clinics in Sacramento and Redding, California May 24-27 immediately following their participation in the World Pool Masters (May 12-16) and the U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship (May 17-22) at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The first stop for Deuel and Strickland will be the Showboat Lounge in Redding, Tuesday May 25th. The Team CSI duo will perform an exhibition at 7:30 pm. Spectators will win prizes and have chances to match up against either Deuel or Strickland in mini challenge matches and also the chance to play with one of the pros in a scotch doubles match. Strickland will also perform trick shots and only in the way Strickland can, tell tales of his life on the road. The two-day Team CSI event at Showboat will conclude on a more serious note Wednesday May 26th where Deuel and Strickland will hold a 4 hour clinic from 11am to 3pm. Registration is limited to 12 students. The 12 students are divided into 2 groups of 6 and each group will spend 2 hours with each of the Team CSI Pros. The fee for this great opportunity to learn from two of the best is only $200 per person. Thursday May 27th Duel and Strickland will travel to Hard Times Billiards in Sacramento where they will again hold another 4 hour pool clinic from 11am to 3pm. On April 24th, 2010 15-Rack 10-Ball Pool Leagues hosted their $400 added “End of the spring session” tournament, which was held at The Wynkoop Brewing Company. Players who participated in the spring session received a special invite to participate in this competition.

The formats were players got into randomly drawn groups of three and played 15-Racks of 10-ball the ghost. The player with the most points including their handicaps advanced to the next round. The five players that advanced played an additional 10-racks to determine their place in the finals. Matt Driste, newbie of 15-rack’s league, won the event with a dominating score of 94, second place finisher was Nathan Barry with a score of 71, Bret Banwart won third with a score of 69, and Rob Nehr and Mike Prewitt finished 4th/5th with a tie of 67 points each. The next 15-Rack “end of the session tournament” will be held September 4th, 2010 concluding the summer session of league, which starts June 13th, 2010. California Pool Players Tour

The California Pool Players Tour is a new and exciting pro–am tour coming to California, offering a quality series of 9-ball tournaments in both Northern and Southern California. The inaugural event will take place at California Billiard Club in Mountain View, CA on June 1213 @ 10:00. This is the culmination of long hours of hard work by a small group of players like you who are passionate about pool and who want a non-handicapped, open format emphasizing skill over luck. While this format may be new and different, we believe it keeps the playing field level while increasing the competition for everyone. The format is a race to 7, double elimination. Players are divided into 2 brackets, one for Pros and A players and one for B and C players, playing simultaneously until the top 25% of each bracket is determined. Those finalists advance to a combined bracket for the cash payout round. We believe in keeping entry fees low and paying prizes to a large portion of the field while keeping first place attractive enough to draw the crowd-pleasing players. Entry fees are based on skill level: PRO $100, A $75 - B/C $50 - which is determined by factors including known ability, player self-rating, and tournament performance. Junior players are welcome and encouraged to play. Entry fee for Juniors 15-18 is $25, and under 14 are free. Membership is $50 the first year and $25 to renew annually. Advanced registration is required. The CPPT is run by players like you who can identify the wants and needs of its members. We aim to make pool accessible to everybody and bridge the gap between amateur and professional levels. Making the events attractive to pro players will generate excitement in the community. A modest entry fee could get you an hour “lesson“ from a top pro that would normally cost you upwards of $150/hr. You can’t beat that experience for the value. A future goal of the CPPT is starting a junior tour. It is vital that we promote the game among today’s youth, because they are the ones that will ensure the perpetuation of the billiards industry in the long run. Baseball has a farm system that develops young players until they are capable and confident going up against the superstars, and pool should do the same. The CPPT is the vehicle that will vastly improve and stimulate the growth of the game in California and really make a difference in the pool culture. We hope to see you at our tournament!
